- 0:07The Kansas City Royals faced the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium for game 5 of the ALCS on October 14th, 1976.
- 0:16The best of five series was tied at two games apiece.
- 0:20This is the local New York broadcast of the final game of the series featuring announcers Frank Messer, Phil Rizzuto, and Bill White.
- 0:28Alright, this is it. The whole season coming down at just one ball game.
- 0:35And every mistake will be magnified and every great play will be magnified.
- 0:41And it's a tough night for the players, I tell you.
- 0:44I know last night, being in the same situation many times with the great Yankee teams of the past,
- 0:49you stay awake and you dream and you think what might be if you're the hero or the ghost.
- 0:54And it's really a tremendous amount of pressure on all the ball players and of course the manager, Billy Martin and Whitey Herzog.
- 1:02We'll give it a starting lineup for the Kansas City Royals leading off in center field Al Collins.
- 1:10Remember the Royals have been without their star center fielder, Amos Otis, since the first inning of the first game out in Kansas City when he sprained his ankle.
- 1:18John Polkett will be in right field in bat second. At third base and batting third, George Brett.
- 1:25Big John Mayberry hitting in the cleanup spot at first base. In left field and batting Chris Hal McRae.
- 1:31Jamie Quirk, again the designated hitter. He did a fine job yesterday. He'll be batting in the sixth position.
- 1:37Cookie Rojas, who had a fine game at second base, will be again at second base batting seventh.
- 1:42The shortstop batting eighth, Freddie Patek and catching and batting ninth, Brock Martinez.
- 1:48On the mound for Kansas City, Dennis Leonard.
- 1:52All the New York Yankees leading off in center field, Mickey Rivers.
- 1:55And Mickey, who has admitted himself he has had a very disappointing playoff so far.
- 2:00Hoping for a big game tonight, the Yankees really need it. They need Mickey on base.
- 2:05Roy White will be in left field and bat second.
- 2:08Catching and batting Ferret Berman-Munson. At first base, hitting in the cleanup spot, Chris Chamberlain.
- 2:14Carlos May will be the designated hitter, batting fifth.
- 2:17At third base and batting sixth, Greg Nettles. And he has had an outstanding playoff series so far.
- 2:23Oscar Gamble will be in right field batting seventh. At second base batting eighth, Willie Randolph.
- 2:28And the shortstop batting ninth, Fred Stanley.
- 2:31Fishing for the New York Yankees, Ed Figueroa.
- 2:36High temperature, game time 54 degrees and I believe it went up a couple of degrees.
- 2:40It was a lot colder than that about two hours ago.
- 2:45And a jam-packed crowd.
- 2:47I'll give you the umpires. Our friends will be calling balls and strikes. Larry McCoy at first.
- 2:53Joe Brinkman at second. Larry Barnett at third.
- 2:56George Maloney down the left field line and Bill Haller down the right field line.
- 3:01As both bullpen crews are walking across center field out to their respective bullpens.
- 3:06Which is situated out almost in dead center field and left center field.
- 3:11And Gamble and Monson playing a little catch.
- 3:14And the first ball of the night is going to be thrown out by the Yankee clubhouse man Pete Sheehy.
- 3:19Who has spent more time here at Yankee Stadium than any other man alive.
- 3:24Or who has passed away for that matter.
- 3:27Pete Sheehy came in the early 20s. Or maybe the middle 20s.
- 3:34The early 20s. And has been here ever since.
- 3:39He has seen more great ball players come and go than any other person I guess in baseball.
- 3:48Great years of murderous role for the Yankees. That was 1927.
- 3:56And he's still in great shape.
- 3:58He's a fixture around here. The Yankee ball players wouldn't know what to do without Pete Sheehy.
- 4:04Yankees ready now as they stand down on the bottom of their dugout steps waiting to charge out on the field.
- 4:15The Yankees are looking for their 30th pennant and the first since 1964.
- 4:27And as I said if the Yankees win this ball park will be decorated with pennants that no other club has as many of that will be all around this ball park.
- 4:39My Figueroa is just now getting to the Yankee dugout as he finishes warm ups out in center field.
- 4:46And the Yankees are waiting until he's about ready and then charge out on the field.
- 4:57And by the way this is Ed Figueroa's birthday. The Yankees take the field led by Greg Nettles out to third base.
- 5:11It'll be Nettles at third. Stanley at short. Randolph at second.
- 5:14Shambler at first. White in left. Rivers in center. Gamble in right. Munson catching. And Ed Figueroa out on the mound. Figueroa at 28 years old it is.
- 5:27The Yankees leading winner in 1976 winning 19 and losing 10.
- 5:36And now Pete G standing in the on deck circle. He better make a good throw to Munson or the ball players will really get all over him.
- 5:45And here's Pete with the wind up and he throws a strike to Munson who will go over and flips it back to Pete.
- 5:52And now Figueroa will take his warm up pitches and we'll be ready to go.
- 6:00A lot of people can fantasize just think of themselves being out there in the position of these Yankee and Royal ball players.
- 6:08How much this ball game means to each one. Not only the difference in money for each player but the prestige of getting into a World Series.
- 6:18And trying to pull off those cocky Cincinnati Reds who have really been popping off.
- 6:24I know the Yankees would love to get a shot at them. So would Kansas City.
- 6:34A big hubbub and right from back of the Yankee dugout dead center. Kelly Savalas.
- 6:40We might have to ask him to put a hat on his head. It's shining up here. Some glare.
- 6:45But that's the thing lately. They say being bald is very sexy.
- 6:52All right. I said it just about everybody you want to name be here.
- 6:57And I carry Grant as a mystic aim here at Yankee Stadium in the playoffs. Frank Sinatra has been here.
- 7:06And we're ready for the first pitch of the ball game as Al Collins will step in.
- 7:17Collins so far in the series has three hits and 17 at bats. One triple. No runs batted in and he scored twice.
- 7:25He's a good man to keep off the base pass though. He has two stolen bases.
- 7:30The Royals have four stolen bases. Collins has two. Walters the other two.
- 7:37Yet the man who leaves him his stolen bases has been thrown out every time he's tried to steal Freddie Potec.
- 7:43Building up to the first pitch of the ball game. Collins deep in the box. Bigelow gets the sign from Munson.
- 7:48Here's the first pitch and it's low and outside ball one as Collins glucks the bunch.
- 8:02Bigelow swings into the windup and a bouncer off all plate and Randolph's going to have to hurry.
- 8:07He gets it so they got him pretty play by Willie Randolph and that's one of the toughest plays for any infielder.
- 8:14A Baltimore chop off all plate went about 30 feet in the air.
- 8:18Willie had to get it on the first short hop and get rid of it in the same motion and did.
- 8:23That youngster is Mr. Cool out there. We've got to give him a big star on the first play of the ball game.
- 8:28Willie Randolph. Just a rookie but plays like he's been in the big leagues 10 years.
- 8:34Here is Tom Pocet. Pocet batting 231 for the playoff three for 13 but he has two doubles and four runs batted in.
- 8:45Left hand batter bounces it far outside of first strike one.
- 8:57John Keller is the coach at third base and Steve Boros at first base for Whitey Herzog Kansas City Royals.
- 9:11The next pitch is fouled just below it.
- 9:17And one of the hits out in the luxury boxers gets a souvenir.
- 9:22Pocet is 5'11, 175 pounds from Eau Claire, Wisconsin.
- 9:31Again the Yankee outfield straight away. One out, nobody on. Two strikes to count on Pocet.
- 9:38Bigger all line and the pitch just missed the outside corner. Man that was close to take.
- 9:49On deck is George Brett. One ball, two strikes, there's the pitch.
- 9:56He jammed them and he fouled it. Just got a piece of it fouled it down to third base line. Good pitch by Figueroa.
- 10:11Pocet had a fine year batting 302 in a regular season but he was injured. Severely injured running into a wall which cut down his chances of being possibly the rookie of the year.
- 10:23Still a ball and two strikes. One out, nobody on. Figueroa kicks his pitch.
- 10:28Serve a little bit higher as Pocet started to off-rant and held up. And it's even at two and two.
- 10:36Figueroa normally gets that breaking pitch down around the knees. That one was up just above the letters.
- 10:45A 2-2 pitch, a foul.
- 11:00Can you imagine all year we've been waiting for a foul ball. I finally get one two inches away and Lave Friedman gets his clumsily hands in the way. Thought he had a wrench.
- 11:09There's a swing and a miss strike three.
- 11:14And Figueroa gets a big strike out in the ball game. There are two outs.
- 11:22And the batter now is George Brett. Brett batting 429 to the playoffs. 6 for 14. He scored twice as one triple and two runs batted in.
- 11:35And of course over the regular season Brett led the American League in batting with a 333 average. 215 hits.
- 11:46Two outs, nobody on. The pitch is outside ball one. Brett is six feet tall, 200 pounds from Blue Springs, Missouri.
- 12:02A foul back in the crowd and out of play. Evens the count at one-on-one.
- 12:11No way the butterflies are not floating around in the ball players tonight. All with the crowd.
- 12:21With a big break slightly over the left center field now.
- 12:26And the 1-1 pitch down low with a breaking pitch two and one. Right over near the line and left.
- 12:31But is not playing quite as shallow here at the stadium as he did out in Kansas City. Brett did hit a line drive over Mickey's head. Mickey misjudged it slightly.
- 12:41And it opened the gates for a big inning for the Royals. The 2-1 pitch. Power off the up by his test protector. Bounces all the way back to the mound.
- 12:49Hard friends out to look at it. And he keeps it in play. The count is even at two and two. On deck big John Mayberry.
- 13:07Big Rower. Appearing very cool, calm and collected out on the mound. Now he winds. And the pitch outside is three and two.
- 13:19He tried to put a little extra on a fastball, dipping away from Brett. But missed the corner.
- 13:31And the ball is out. Now the payoff pitch. Line base hit the right field. Might be extra bases. Gamble will be a double.
- 13:41As Oscar comes up with the ball off the wall and Brett continues his not hitting. A double a right field as the Yankees were playing him to hit straight away.
- 13:50He pulled the ball. And for Brett that's his seventh hit of the series. His first double of the series. And it brings up John Mayberry. And these Royals have been rough with two out in this series.
- 14:05Mayberry just missed a grand slam homer in yesterday's ball game. He is 2-14 in this series. No extra bases and one run batted in.
- 14:15They'll be very careful with Mr. Mayberry. The pitch is fouled out of play down the left field line back into the crowd.
- 14:23Nettles and Stanley chase it down the line until it goes into the seat.
- 14:34Two men are out as Brett goes back to second base.
- 14:40Now the Yankees are deep and swung around towards right with Mayberry up there. No score. Top of the first two out.
- 14:48Figueroa kick delivers it. Tying away one on one. On deck Hal McRae.
- 14:54And let's see which stance McRae is going to use tonight. I believe he'll go to that straight up stance.
- 15:00He had gone off at 10. Crouching and then stood up and hit three bullets. Two of them for base. This one Nettles made a great play.
- 15:07One-one pitch. High drive to right. I don't know whether it'll be far enough. Gamble back to the wall. Leap.
- 15:14Home running. Can't get it. A towering home run just over the wall.
- 15:20And John Mayberry has put the Royals out in front two to nothing. And again after two are out these Royals have been tough.
- 15:28He got a curve ball up to him and Mayberry gets his first extra base hit of the playoff.
- 15:33Just out of the reach of Oscar Gamble who went back against the wall. Leap tie. Just barely cleared the fence.
- 15:40But that's all you have to do and the Royals are out in front two to nothing.
- 15:49And all this after two out. McRae takes the pitch down low ball one. McRae is standing straight up.
- 16:00Figueroa delivers. It's in there. Strike called. One-on-one. The crowd noticeably silent now.
- 16:07That was the first home run hit by the Royals in this playoff. McRae is two for 13. A double, a triple and one run batted in.
- 16:16And a foul back and not a play in the upper deck.
- 16:21That's it. That was a towering home run and you really had to wait.
- 16:26Couldn't tell by the way Gamble played it whether it was going to be deep enough.
- 16:33Two to nothing the Royals lead. And the curve swing and a missed strike three.
- 16:39He gets it tough. McRae two strikeouts on the inning but two runs on two hits. No errors. Nobody left.
- 16:46In the middle of the first the Royals two and the Yankees coming to back. On the mound for the Royals Dennis Leonard.
- 16:53Leonard has appeared in one ball game. He worked two and a third innings giving up six hits and three runs. All of them earned.
- 17:03He's had a fine year in a regular season.
- 17:12And a New York boy by the way.
- 17:17He lives in Sarasota Florida now but he's a New Yorker and his family comes to watch him pitch whenever he's on the mound.
- 17:25Whether it's here in Kansas City, California, wherever.
- 17:30So he'll be working the Mickey Rivers, Roy White and Fairman Munson.
- 17:35Here in the bottom of the first inning the Yankees trailing two to nothing on a two run homer by John Maber.
- 17:48Mickey Rivers in this series is four for eighteen. No extra bases. No runs batted in.
- 17:55He has walked one, struck out one and has scored just twice. He does not have a stolen base. He tried one stolen base and was caught stealing.
- 18:04And the Yankees need Mickey on the bases if they're going to win.
- 18:13Buck Martinez fires the ball down his second baseman, Cookie Rojas and Rivers coming up ready to lead off.
- 18:25Dennis Leonard is six one hundred ninety pounds.
- 18:30Mickey bat at three twelve during the regular season.
- 18:34George Brett moves in at third.
- 18:43And away Mac Ray is in right field and Polkett in left field as the pitcher Rivers is fouled back and out of play.
- 19:01And the ball is back on Mickey Rivers.
- 19:14One one pitch a curve and the hit deep to left field. Polkett going back. He's not going to get it.
- 19:35Mickey is fouled and one hop against the wall. And nobody else would have gotten a triple on the ball hit like that except Mickey Rivers.
- 19:46So, Mickey gets the Yankees off and winging.
- 19:50And Rivers said he was going to have his best night tonight. He's already done that.
- 19:58And now Roy White. Listen to this clown. Roy White batting at two sixty seven is four for fifteen. Three doubles and two runs batted in.
- 20:12And the Royals will play the infield back and give up a run.
- 20:16Rivers leads off third. The stretch by Leonard. The pitch to White. A bouncing ball in the hole. Backhanded by Polkett. The long throw is low. White beats it out.
- 20:29And infield whips. Rivers scores and it's two to one. Polkett went deep to the outfield grass to a one hop at a Mayberry.
- 20:35But Roy White with a burst of speed beat it out.
- 20:39And a run batted in for White. Rivers scores it's now the Royals two and the Yankees one. Nobody out and Roy White down the first base and a batter Thurman Munson.
- 20:56Thurman Munson batting three eighty nine in the playoffs. Seven for eighteen. Two doubles one run batted in.
- 21:04And now Galen Fisco the pitching coach is coming out.
- 21:11And looking out towards the bullpen.
- 21:15Looks like balls split off the left hander out in the bullpen. Normally Wiley Herzog comes out to make the pitching changes.
- 21:31Double check out in the bullpen. And it looks like split off.
- 21:37Bill Cain is going to check it for me.
- 21:42It is Paul split off the big left hander.
- 21:46And it doesn't look like they're going to take Dennis Leonard out. At least not right now. Maybe another base hit.
- 21:53Leonard was the pitcher who started
- 21:57The ball game.
- 22:01With off came on and did such a great job in relief that the Royals won out in Kansas City.
- 22:11Nobody out. Roy White at first base Thurman Munson the bat of the Royals leading two to one.
- 22:16Here in the bottom of the first inning.
- 22:23Mayberry holds the bag against White. There's a throw over there but Roy back easily.
- 22:35And out is a green balloon rolls across home plate.
- 22:49Leonard comes to the belt. Pitch to Munson down low ball line.
- 23:01Yankees have had only two stolen bases in the playoffs.
- 23:05Chris Chambliss has one believe it or not. Wiley ran down the other one.
- 23:12On deck is Chambliss.
- 23:15White leads off first. Leonard who takes a lot of time now comes second.
- 23:20There goes White. Swing and a miss. The throw to second White has a stolen base.
- 23:26Martinez could not get the ball out of his glove. The Yankees had to hit and run on.
- 23:31And Martinez could not get the ball out of his glove. So White gets a stolen base.
- 23:36And the Yankees have something going again here in the bottom of the first.
- 23:40White second nobody out. A 1-1 count on Munson. Thurman trying to hit that ball to right field.
- 23:48Oh a big break for the Yankees there as Martinez double pump.
- 23:52Trying to get that ball out of his glove.
- 23:58Boyle's two Yankees one bottom of the first.
- 24:02Listen to this crowd.
- 24:06White leads off second. Chris to Munson. Swing and a foul off the thin guards of the catcher.
- 24:11It's one ball two strikes. Thurman again trying to shoot to right field.
- 24:16And now Martinez goes out to have a chat with Leonard. Pats him on the back side and comes back.
- 24:31That's Thurman a good two strike hitter. He really guards that play.
- 24:36Leonard's going very hard tonight. He knows he goes as long as he can. They got a lot of other pitches in the both ends.
- 24:44The right hander comes to the belt.
- 24:47And the pick for Munson. Foul upstairs and out of play.
- 24:51Good fastball that Thurman was trying to slice to right. Just got under it.
- 24:57Two ball and two strikes on Munson.
- 25:07Stream is flying all over the backstop on top of it.
- 25:13And the volume builds up again. As Leonard checks Roy White.
- 25:19Delivers to Munson a third bounce into home base hit.
- 25:22Roy White going to have to stop at third base. And Munson's going to go to second. He's going to make it.
- 25:27Good heads up base running by Munson. His Mayberry cut off the throw.
- 25:32Dick Mauser hell wide up.
- 25:35And Munson comes forward a clutch single to left field.
- 25:38Here comes Whitey Herzog. That's all for Dennis Leonard.
- 25:43The Yankees did not let the two run homer by John Mayberry phase them one bit.
- 25:49They have bounce back with a run. Have run at that second and third. Nobody out.
- 25:53Jamblers the batter and Paul Slithoff is being waved in from the both ends.
- 25:58And here comes the new pitcher making his way to the mound.
- 26:01It's been a rough playoff for young Dennis Leonard.
- 26:05He's been knocked out twice now here in the first inning without retiring the Yankees.
- 26:09Rivers tripled. White single to drive him in. Then stole a base. Munson single to left.
- 26:14The Yankees have run at the second, third and Slithoff is coming on.
- 26:17What a job he did against the Yankees.
- 26:20He went five and two third and he's allowing four hits and no runs.
- 26:25He walked through and struck out one.
- 26:30And Slithoff considers himself a very, very lucky young man.
- 26:35He had hurt the pitching finger on his left hand.
- 26:40Was sent down to Florida to recuperate and pitch a little bit.
- 26:44Then was called back. Never had an idea that was going to use him in the playoff.
- 26:49And when they called on him he was ready.
- 26:52But tonight's a different night. Yankee fans standing.
- 26:57They trailed two to one but they have Munson at second, White at third and Chris Jamblers the batter.
- 27:02By the way, Munson picked up his eighth hit of the playoff that ties Jamblers
- 27:09and also ties Matty a lose record for the most hits in a playoff by American League ballplayers.
- 27:16The record is held by T. Groves who has nine hits.
- 27:19So now two Yankees have a chance to tie that or break it.
- 27:23Jamblers and Munson. White leads off third.
- 27:26Munson off second. Here's the stretch by Slithoff.
- 27:29Pitch to Jamblers. High, almost a wild pitch, ball one.
- 27:37You know it's a lot different coming in to pitch a ball game when your team is leading
- 27:41than when your team is behind.
- 27:45Some pitchers pitch a lot better with the team behind and when they're ahead.
- 27:50A curve hit to left field. Let's you get a run in.
- 27:52Roy White tagging at third.
- 27:54Moquette makes the catch. The throw to the plate.
- 27:57And not nearly in time. White scores.
- 28:00Munson holds his second. We're all tied up at 2-2.
- 28:04A sacrifice fly. A run batted in for Chris Jamblers.
- 28:09And the ball game is tied up.
- 28:12Now there is one out.
- 28:18And the battle will be Carlos May.
- 28:29Carlos May is 2 for 6 in the playoffs with one double. No runs batted in.
- 28:37And they are trying to wave McRae in and over in right field.
- 28:42Remember McRae has not played too much out there. He's been the designated hitter most of the year.
- 28:48Alright, Munson is second. We're all tied at 2-2 in the bottom of the first.
- 28:53Here's the stretch by Slithoff.
- 28:56And the curve is over strike one call.
- 28:59Moquette showed me a pretty good arm there though it was way off line.
- 29:07On deck Greg Nettles. One man out.
- 29:14Slithoff to the belt. Curve swing and a miss.
- 29:17Off speed breaking pitch and Carlos way out in front.
- 29:21For Jamblers that was his sixth run batted in of the playoffs.
- 29:27And that leads the Yankees.
- 29:34And the fact it leads both clubs in runs a batted in.
- 29:38Why nothing in 2 on Carlos May.
- 29:41Munson leading off second.
- 29:44Slithoff kicked by a foul back and not a play over the Royals dugout and into the crowd.
- 29:56He said it, a Yankee showed me something bouncing back.
- 30:00A lot of teams could have collapsed after that powering two run home by John Mayberry.
- 30:07That's the kind of club the Yankees and the Royals have been all year.
- 30:11Bounce back from adversity.
- 30:13Don't let anything get you down. That's why they're fighting for the championship here tonight.
- 30:18Again the 0-2 pitch foul back and not a play.
- 30:28Still nothing in 2 on Carlos.
- 30:35Big left hander Paul Slithoff. He's 6'3, 210 pounds from Blue Springs, Missouri.
- 30:43Change up loose in the shallow left center but coming on his cow and he's there now and one hand set.
- 30:49Carlos did not hit that ball well. It looked like it might drop in for a moment.
- 30:54Two out and now Greg Nettles.
- 31:06Nettles has come on strong in the playoff. He's 4'14.
- 31:10One double, two homers and four runs ratted in.
- 31:14He got both those homers in yesterday's ball game. One a two run shot and one a solo homer.
- 31:21Two men around Munson a second. We're all tied 2-2.
- 31:26Mr. Nettles high and tight ball one. On deck Oscar Gamble.
- 31:36The Royals have two hits, the Yankees three.
- 31:42Slithoff gets the sign from Martinez.
- 31:47Munson and delivers to the plate and a throw to second base and Munson jumps back in time.
- 31:52Good throw by Martinez.
- 31:55It's 2-0 to Nettles. Now wait a minute, Nettles comes back.
- 31:58I don't know whether friends call that a strike or not. The scoreboard says 2-0.
- 32:08We'll find out in a moment.
- 32:13The pitch fouls back on the screen. He came in with a fast ball.
- 32:20Martinez runs out to the mound.
- 32:28Slithoff ready again. Delivers a curve, popped up shallow left Brett going back.
- 32:35It's in fair territory. Patek calls him off and a little shortstop makes the play in fair territory.
- 32:41The Yankees pick up two runs on three hits. No error for the man left.
- 32:46At the end of one it's the Royals two and the Yankees two.
- 32:49Back on the mound in a brand new ball game.
- 32:53And I got a feeling this thing's going to go right down to the wire.
- 32:57That kind of a night.
- 33:01Both ball teams playing aggressive baseball.
- 33:08Let's see who gets the breaks in the ball game. That'll determine the winner.
- 33:13Usually does in playoffs and World Series play.
- 33:20There's a great article in TV Guide.
- 33:23I hardly ever read it, but this article was about ball players who get hitters in the World Series and playoff games.
- 33:31It's an excellent article. It takes a different viewpoint trying to get inside a player to see why some of the superstars don't have good playoffs in good World Series.
- 33:40The tremendous pressure on each ball player and what happens.
- 33:45An article in there, what happens to your blood when you get nervous and excited.
- 33:49By Jamie Korsabatter and he lines one foul down the right field.
- 33:53Man, he got a round on a slider.
- 33:56Mark is swinging that bat with some authority.
- 34:01One for three, that hit a triple and two runs that at end.
- 34:06He was used as the designated hitter yesterday and it paid off for Whitey Herzog and the Royals.
- 34:11A left hand batter.
- 34:14Bigger row is next pitch. Foul down the left field line and out of play. It's going two.
- 34:22Mark is six feet four inches tall, 185 pounds from Whittier, California.
- 34:32During the regular season, Mark batters 246.
- 34:37The pitch held up and it's just a little bit high, a ball and two strikes.
- 34:41We're all tied to a piece here in the top of the second.
- 34:53Bigger row gets the sign from Munson. His pitch inside and it's two and two.
- 34:58And Bigger row is really bearing down on each pitch.
- 35:01Unlike the way he pitches during the regular season, he'll ease up every once in a while.
- 35:07Nobody can ease up tonight. Give it all you got.
- 35:13Nobody out, nobody on. The two-two delivery fouls are left and out of play.
- 35:23Two and two on course on deck, cookie rohan.
- 35:37The two-two pitch. Line to left field but Roy White moving to his right is there and makes the catch.
- 35:45Oh, reliable on left field Roy White. Reminds me of Tommy Henrich.
- 35:50They don't get the ink, they don't get the publicity, but day in, day out they do an outstanding job.
- 35:56Here's cookie rohan. Cookie made his first shot in yesterday's ballgame. He's two for five with one run battered in.
- 36:08Frank White had started the three previous games for the Royals.
- 36:12And the pitch to Cookie is right in there, strike one, call.
- 36:17Something's a tough man to play. Hits to all fields.
- 36:23On deck, Freddy Potts at slider is high and it's one-on-one.
- 36:34We'll see a lot of activity in the stands throughout the night.
- 36:39The campers get the best of some of the fans. Their loyalty and rooting. And occasionally a little wager on the game.
- 36:50Hall House. Oh, I'd say that the last three games have been beautiful seeing this part back.
- 36:58One-one pitch. Base hit. High fastball, he drills out in the center field.
- 37:04The Revers up with it and Rojas makes the turn and holds on.
- 37:09Oh, Bigger O's got to keep that ball down as we mentioned.
- 37:13That's the third hit. For the Royals, each team with three bases. And here's Freddy Potts at.
- 37:21Potts at batting 429. He's six for 14. Two doubles and four runs battered in.
- 37:29The Yankees have to be alert for possible bunt, hit and run. Cookie Rojas, smart baselander, doesn't have the speed he used to have, but can still steal a base when needed.
- 37:42Bigger O to the belt. The pitch to Pottschek. High ball one.
- 37:46Pottschek is the littlest ball player in the major league. Might be four inches tall, 140 pounds.
- 37:56And when he crouches, there's not much of a target to shoot at, so he doesn't get many walks.
- 38:01One old pitcher. Curve in there, one-on-one. On deck, Bucks Martinez, the catcher.
- 38:16Ball a strike, one out. Rojas leads off first, we're all tied 2-2. Fastball.
- 38:23Bigger O, instead of stepping off the mound, wielded to the Chambliss who threw to Randolph.
- 38:28And Rojas beat the return throw to second base. That'll have to go as a stolen base.
- 38:34Rojas jumped off the bag while Bigger O was looking at him.
- 38:38And Bigger O got a little ruffled instead of stepping off the mound and throwing to second. He wielded to the first.
- 38:45By that time, Rojas was halfway to second, and O Chambliss made a good throw. Rojas with a slide, beat the tag.
- 38:53So that's a stolen base. Pitch to Pottschek, swing, and a miss. Strike three. Big strikeout for Bigger O.
- 39:02That's his third strikeout of the ballgame. And now Bob Lemon.
- 39:08Oh, he's coming out and talking with Bigger O. And I tell him how to pitch to Martinez. Remember, at one time, Bob Lemon managed his Kansas City Royal team.
- 39:19Billy Martin now telling everybody there are two outs.
- 39:27Bigger O, a kick. His pitch line, face hit, right field. Gamble coming in, bounces off his hip.
- 39:33No chance going to second base as Martinez, live it slow. And he saves that second base.
- 39:40And the Royals go out in front, three to two. Well, there the Royals took advantage.
- 39:46But this play by Bigger O to get Rojas to second. It's a single for Martinez to run that in.
- 39:55Gamble is charged with the air as the ball bounced off his knee. Rojas scores and the Royals once again go out in front.
- 40:03It is now Royals three and the Yankees two. So the Royals took advantage of a big break.
- 40:12Martinez is at second with two out in the bat of Al Collins, who was thrown out in a fine play by Willie Randolph. First time up.
- 40:23Bigger O delivers his tie ball one. Looks like Grant Jackson up in the Yankee bullpen.
- 40:36Martinez leads off second. Curve is over the outside corner. It's one on one.
- 40:50These Royals have been murder after two are out. That's when they come up with their clutch base hit. One on one the count.
- 41:00The pitch is bounced to a second base. Randolph to his right has it. Throw to first in time and Willie almost stumbled as he threw. He looks back.
- 41:09But he gets them. The Royals come up with a run on two hits. One Yankee error. One man left at the end of an inning and a half. The Royals three. The Yankees two.
- 41:20Let's see if the Yankees can bounce back again. They were losing two nothing in the bottom of the first court. Two runs to tie.
- 41:27They are losing three to two now in the bottom of the second. As Oscar Gamble steps in, Oscar's two for six. As one double and one run batted in.
- 41:36As we await the end of a long commercial for the umpires to say time is in. That's what pays the freight for these televised games.
- 41:49Can't have your cake and eat it. All right. Our friends get the sign. Dust off on plate and Oscar Gamble ready to step in.
- 42:03It'll be Gamble Randolph and Stanley here in the bottom of the second.
- 42:08As this does not look like a pitcher's night tonight. Five runs already scored in the ballgame. This just the bottom of the second.
- 42:15It's the Gamble. It's low curve. Pulse foul almost hit Elton Howard in the coaching box. Strike one.
- 42:24Split off hung that curve ball to Gamble. That's a little over anxious out in front.
- 42:33Nobody out. Nobody on. Red or white. And the slider nicked the outside corner at zone two.
- 42:48A shade gamble towards right field. Two strikes pitch high and away. One ball two strikes.
- 43:02No action now in either bullpen.
- 43:07Here's the one two pitch. Low outside two and two.
- 43:15Randolph walking around the on deck circle.
- 43:21The very first year chance to get the World Series.
- 43:24Right. Great. The outside corner.
- 43:28Gamble on his but the Norville.
- 43:31And split off.
- 43:33Picked up his first strike out. That's the first Yankee to get down on strike to bring up Willie Randolph.
- 43:39Willie is two for fourteen in the series. No extra base hit. One run batted in.
- 43:48It's Randolph. Right one call. Got to stay down low and Willie questions the call.
- 44:04Red Stanley. Red even with the bag at third. Low curve hangs outside. It's one and one.
- 44:15Now in shades Randolph fighting left set up. Left fielder and right fielder straight away on Willie.
- 44:22That's down low. It's two and one.
- 44:34One out nobody on. Bottom of the second.
- 44:38Split off. Big wind up. Big kick. And a fastball popped up in right center coming over McRae.
- 44:44The right fielder calling for it. Backs up now and makes the catch.
- 44:49There are two out and it will bring up Red Stanley.
- 44:54Stanley five for twelve with two doubles. No RBIs batting four seventeen in the series.
- 45:05Stanley batting number nine in the Yankee lineup and on deck Mickey Rivett.
- 45:14Stanley is a little bit high ball one. Stanley does not give the pitcher an easy time.
- 45:21He takes a lot of pitches fouls off a lot of pitches. No more and automatic out.
- 45:28There's a strike and it's one and one.
- 45:33Royals three runs on four hits. The Yankees two runs on three hits.
- 45:41Split off. Shakes off one side. He's got the one he likes. And it's down low two and one.
- 45:51Now he's shading Stanley slightly over in right center field.
- 45:55Willie Herzog really moving his fielders around on every Yankee batter.
- 46:00Two one pitch is a bouncing ball. One hop to Brett. One hand grab. The long throw in time.
- 46:06He does have a good arm. Not always true but strong. The Yankees go down in order and at the end of two it's the Royals three and the Yankees two.
- 46:16The Yankees trailing three to two as we get ready for the top of the third inning.
- 46:21It'll be Tom Polkett, George Brett and John Mayberry.
- 46:26He's got the head figure off and Grant Jackson gets up right away and starts throwing in the Yankee ball pin.
- 46:46Polkett struck out his first time up.
- 46:54And we're still waiting for the OK to play ball.
- 47:02Players are on edge because this is not fair to the players in a sense.
- 47:06They're ready to go and you got to wait. Figaro now decides he's going to throw a couple more to stay warm.
- 47:13Alright they finally get the OK. Whether it's a wink or whistle or a finger.
- 47:23The left hand of Polkett steps in.
- 47:28He's by Figaro. He bumps right back to the mound. Figaro lucky got it throws him out.
- 47:33That ball almost got by Figaro for a face hit. He just barely got his glove down in time.
- 47:39Polkett bounce a hard one hopper back to the mound. He's trying to drag it by the pitcher.
- 47:46One way and out George Brett who got the Royals rally started in the first inning with a two out double down the right field line.
- 47:57Brett now has seven hits in the series for the Royals.
- 48:05And the change up hits the outside corner strike one call.
- 48:18Figaro arrives back his pitch fouled upstairs and out of play like a third base. Nothing into the count.
- 48:40The Royals got their own fan club here tonight. That's one of our cameraman.
- 48:48The 0 2 pitch high and tight makes Brett lean away from the plate.
- 48:53Wasn't that close but the crowd gets a big kick out of it.
- 48:58The way this Brett hangs in there. You got to loosen him up a little bit.
- 49:03He really stands in there. 1 2 pitch foul just to our left again.
- 49:12Coming very close tonight.
- 49:16John Mayberry on deck.
- 49:26Nobody on top of the third. Royals in front 3 to 2.
- 49:35Wind up and the pitch is popped up in the center field. Mickey Revers moving in.
- 49:41Nick is under it and makes the catch.
- 49:44And I said whenever you get Brett out you breathe a sigh of relief.
- 49:48But now the big man starting to get hot. We told you he just missed a grand slam homer in yesterday's game.
- 49:54He hit a two run shot his first time up in this game.
- 49:57And now with two out and nobody on, Mayberry up there again.
- 50:02Mayberry had hit only three homers from the All-Star break to the end of the year.
- 50:08Makes the pitch way outside ball one.
- 50:14Remember when we were kids and if you threw a pitch you didn't like you'd say oops slip and it wouldn't count even if you hit a home run.
- 50:21Can't work that here. Hard ground ball Randolph.
- 50:24Hanson falls down gets up close to first they got him.
- 50:27Willie Randolph having a lot of trouble keeping his feet but he makes the play.
- 50:32Three up three down and at the end of two and a half the Royals three and the Yankees two.
- 50:38Mickey Revers who started the Yankee rally in the bottom of the first with a long triple at deep left one bounce off the wall.
- 50:46And scored the Yankees first run. Well lead off for the Yankees here in the bottom of the third.
- 50:54It'll be Revers, Leiden, Munson again all three of them at base fifth.
- 51:08Revers, Leiden, Munson all got their hits off Dennis Leonard.
- 51:16This will be the first time they'll be facing Slidoff in this game.
- 51:23Slidoff is ready but the other network is not and now they are and our friends walk them back in the play.
- 51:32Mickey Revers steps into the batter's box. Moquette not playing quite as shallow as he was the first time Revers was up.
- 51:40Red has been at third and here's Slidoff's pitch a curve high and tight ball one.
- 51:54Big left hander delivers again foul down the left field line and back in the upper deck and out of play.
- 52:00Nick's trying to shoot that way tonight.
- 52:09All right, Slidoff gets the time for Martinez.
- 52:13Curve head up the middle of a high curve ball.
- 52:17Mickey's specialty and he lines the bullet back through the middle.
- 52:21And Revers said he was going to have a good fifth game in the years having it.
- 52:25A triple and a single both hit on the nose. The first hit off Slidoff.
- 52:31Now the batter, Roy White, who's single deep in the hole and stole a base and scored in the first inning.
- 52:37Roy will just spin around and bat right handed against the left hander, Slidoff.
- 52:44And on deck, Thurman Munson.
- 52:49Going in on the replay screen, the hit by Revers. How many times Mickey did that this year?
- 52:55He leaves away. Here's the stretch.
- 52:59And White squares the box, takes it low, ball one.
- 53:06Nelson Howard now comes over to talk with Mickey Revers. Also the first base umpire, Larry McCoy.
- 53:12Tell him they're checking for a box.
- 53:19And Martin now telling the playdumpire, make sure he comes to a stop.
- 53:23Slidoff did not come to a stop evidently. He comes sixth.
- 53:28And throws the first base Revers is back.
- 53:32We mentioned in the other playoff games how some pitches cheat a little bit and do not come to a stop when they come to the set position.
- 53:39Just that fraction of a second is the difference between a stolen base or not.
- 53:44Mr. White ready to bunt takes it outside to another.
- 53:58Royals three, Yankees two, bottom of the third.
- 54:01No money out, Revers at first.
- 54:05Slidoff set. And White blocks the bunt takes the strike that time and it's two and one. Roy thought it was outside.
- 54:13So did Billy Martin.
- 54:16But our friends is the one who counts.
- 54:22Two balls, one strike.
- 54:27I check a cheating White over towards second base. Mayberry holding the bag against Revers.
- 54:35Ready even with the bag at third. And the outfield straight away on Roy White.
- 54:40Here's the stretch by Slidoff. Throw to first base Revers is back. That was low but Mayberry, good glove man, backhanded it.
- 54:54All right, Slidoff ready again. Another throw to first and Revers back easily.
- 55:02Still nobody out here in the bottom of the third.
- 55:11Slidoff gets the sign from Martinez.
- 55:15And the pitch, Roy goes to bunt outside throw to first Revers back.
- 55:19And it's three and one.
- 55:22Roy White was ready to bunt.
- 55:25Now let's see if the Yankees try a hit run. Maybe a fake sign. And then have Revers running on three and two.
- 55:32So many things that Billy Martin could do right now. Let's see which one he picks.
- 55:40Three balls and a strike. Here's the stretch.
- 55:43The pitch outside ball for Mickey Revers bothering Slidoff out of the mound.
- 55:50They lost his concentration.
- 55:56Dick Hauser comes in and have a chat with Thurman Munson. The Yankees have their seed merchants on the base path.
- 56:02Revers is second. White is first. Nobody out.
- 56:05The Yankees trailing three to two here in the bottom of the third. Thurman Munson.
- 56:09Who ripped a single to left field his first time up the batter.
- 56:17Remember Thurman Munson has eight base hits in the series.
- 56:24Stretched by Slidoff. Takes to Munson.
- 56:29Side ball one.
- 56:33Right now and now Galen Sisco, the pitching coach, is going to come out and have a chat with Slidoff as we have double barrel action out in the bullpen.
- 56:42It looks like Mingori and Patton from here.
- 56:56Could be Andy Astwood. Nevertheless it's a left hander but that is not so important right now just to let you know that the Royals have their bullpen working.
- 57:05The huddle out on the mound.
- 57:10They break it up. Galen Sisco comes back.
- 57:13We told you whenever there's a pitching change Whitey Herzog comes out to change the pitching.
- 57:18Munson has the count of one ball no strike time.
- 57:21It is Marty Patton the right hander and Andy Astwood the left hander throwing in the bullpen.
- 57:31Nobody out here. Bottom of the third. Royals lead three to two.
- 57:36Rivers is second. Whitey Herzog one ball no strikes on Munson.
- 57:46Here's the stretch.
- 57:48And the pitch.
- 57:50Now Munson tried to shoot the right field. He fouled it off the auxiliary scoreboard.
- 57:56Just below the mezzanine over the Yankee dugout.
- 58:01One on one the count.
- 58:09On deck Chris Jambliss.
- 58:16White leads off first. Rivers off second.
- 58:22Red off Reddy his pitch down the right field line but a curving and going foul deep in the corner would not have been far enough for a home run.
- 58:33And had it stayed there McRae would have been able to make the catch but Rivers would have been able to tag up and go to third easily.
- 58:39It's a ball and two strikes on Munson.
- 58:46Well that time Thurman had a count of 0 and 2 on him and whips a single to left field.
- 58:51Let's see if he can duplicate that first inning feet.
- 58:55Nice split off. Comes to the belt.
- 59:01And the runners are going line. Face hit right center field.
- 59:04Rivers looks far out. White's going to go to third base. It tied up at 3-3 and runners at first and third and nobody else.
- 59:13Had to be a mix up on that play because Roy White was running with the pitch and Rivers was not running.
- 59:22But Munson. Dave Roy White there as he drilled his single to right center field.
- 59:27The drive in Mickey Rivers.
- 59:30Tying up the ball game.
- 59:34And runners at first and third still nobody out and Chris Jambliss the batter.
- 59:41Oh man I said ya.
- 59:48Chris Jambliss has driven in a run with a sacrifice fly for Munson.
- 59:53That was his second run battered in the series. Jambliss has driven in sixth.
- 59:58Gotta wait as the ground throw picking up the streamers out in right field and left field.
- 1:00:05And this crowd going wild. The Yankees have come back for the second time in the ball game to tie it up.
- 1:00:11And what a chance to go ahead. Nobody out. White at third. Munson at first.
- 1:00:17And Jambliss the batter.
- 1:00:40And Jambliss steps in. Munson leads off first. White off third.
- 1:00:49Here's the stretch.
- 1:00:52And the pitch fouled off the end of the bat. Strike one on a breaking pitch.
- 1:00:56Fielded by Dick Hauser who looked it over and flipped it to George Breck.
- 1:01:04Still nobody out.
- 1:01:21Nice put off set. And the pitch. Ground ball at second. They might get two but we're gonna get a run. They save that first as Potec throw pull Mayberry off the bag.
- 1:01:34So it'll be a run battered in for Jambliss. The Yankees lead four to three.
- 1:01:38Munson is out on a hard slide that made Potec throw the ball high.
- 1:01:44That's a fourth play from four to six. Another run battered in for Jambliss as White scores and the Yankees go out front four to three.
- 1:01:56Now there's only one out. Jambliss at first and Carlos made a batter. Carlos slide to center his first time up.
- 1:02:03Jambliss now has driven in seven runs in the playoff series.
- 1:02:12And it is some difference when Mickey Rivers gets on base.
- 1:02:16Unbelievable how he picked up the whole team.
- 1:02:21One out.
- 1:02:25The pitch to May. Five off straight away center field. Collins most in.
- 1:02:29Jambliss halfway and Collins makes the catch for the second out.
- 1:02:35And it will bring up Greg Nettles who popped the short his first time up.
- 1:02:40Yankees four and the Royals three here in the bottom of the third.
- 1:02:57Time is called. Bill Haller down the right field line.
- 1:03:02I don't know whether it's a banner or something that fell down over the right field fence.
- 1:03:09And Al McGregor goes over to pick it up. It's the one of Jimmy Estesito's ground crew.
- 1:03:15And we're ready to go.
- 1:03:19Nettles steps in. Jambliss is at first with two outs. Mayberry playing in back of Jambliss.
- 1:03:27Remember Jambliss has one stolen base for the Yankees in this playoff series.
- 1:03:33The Yankees have only three. One by Randolph and one here tonight by Roy White.
- 1:03:44Here's the stretch by Flithoff.
- 1:03:47And the pitch outside with a breaking pitch ball one.
- 1:04:02Right off to the belt.
- 1:04:04Curve outside ball two to another.
- 1:04:08Trying to be very careful on Greg Nettles.
- 1:04:16Greg says that the injury to his right foot has cut his stride down and he's swinging better.
- 1:04:24High pop up, shallow center, Potec backing up. Collins coming on.
- 1:04:28Potec still backing up and makes the catch.
- 1:04:33But the Yankees pick up two runs on two bases. No errors and two men left.
- 1:04:40And the score at the end of three innings, the Yankees four and the Royals three.
- 1:04:47The Yankees lead four to three and I'd like to take this moment to say how much I enjoyed doing radio for the Yankees again this year.
- 1:04:55All right. Unless this game is tied, I will no longer be speaking to you Yankee fans over the radio.
- 1:05:01This will be my last appearance and it's a very sad thing.
- 1:05:06But even if the Yankees win this, go into the World Series, we will not be broadcasting on this stage.
- 1:05:11When I'll turn it over to Frank Mets, you'll be hearing him a lot, Frank.
- 1:05:15Okay, Phil Rosetto, thank you very much and fans will be hearing you on radio again next year.
- 1:05:19Thank you, Frank.
- 1:05:20Okay, buddy.
- 1:05:22Good evening, everybody. Wherever you might be listening to New York Yankee baseball and I don't know whether you're excited as we are.
- 1:05:27I'm sure you must be, whether you're a Yankee fan, a Royal fan or just a plain old baseball fan because excitement reigns supreme here tonight.
- 1:05:37Hal McRae is about her as we go to the fourth inning.
- 1:05:40Right hand hitters.
- 1:05:43Bigger on, looks down for his side.
- 1:05:45And the first pitch for him is hopped up on the right side of the infield.
- 1:05:50In comes Chambliss, halfway to the plate, makes the catch.
- 1:05:53That's all from McRae.
- 1:06:01One out, nobody on.
- 1:06:03And we'll look now at Jamie Quirk.
- 1:06:07Another Royal took an early lead in the ballgame on a first inning two run homer by John Mayberry.
- 1:06:13The Yankees came back to tie it up.
- 1:06:15Royals took a three to two lead in the second and the Yankees came back with two runs in the third.
- 1:06:21And the Yankees now lead four to three.
- 1:06:33Quirk is a left hand hitter. He flied to left field his first time at bat.
- 1:06:38And he swings in the first pitch, bounces it over the mound, charging in Stanley in front of second. Quick throw, he's out.
- 1:06:46Cut the thread, Stanley came in quickly to throw out Jamie Quirk. And now Cookie Rojas will step in.
- 1:07:09Right hand hitter, single, still second and scored in the second inning. He takes a low ball on.
- 1:07:22Right hand batter waiting, swinging, cry ball, deep left field, Roy White has room, he's back, he's under it, he's got it.
- 1:07:28And the Tigers retired in order. In the middle of the fourth inning, the Yankees four and the Royals three.
- 1:07:34Oscar Gamble will be the lead off batter for the Yankees in the bottom half of the fourth inning.
- 1:07:39Gamble was called out on strike this first time up in the ball game.
- 1:07:45I have never seen a more excited baseball crowd. Of course I was not around in the great excitement days of the Yankees prior to 1964.
- 1:08:00I was fortunate enough to be in Baltimore in 66 when they won the pennant.
- 1:08:05But they won it on the road in Kansas City because there was not much excitement there.
- 1:08:15But this crowd is just in a gala celebrating mood.
- 1:08:24Oscar Gamble will lead off the bottom half of the fourth inning.
- 1:08:31Gamble is two for seven in the series, the wind up by split off and Gamble,
- 1:08:36did he butt at it? They appeal to the third base umpire and Larry Barnett says yes he did. He offered for the pitch.
- 1:08:47Oscar Gamble batted 232 over the season.
- 1:08:55He had 17 home runs, 15 of them here at the stadium. The 0-1 deal to him, bowled back, got him in on the fifth, really jammed him and he bowled it back on the left side.
- 1:09:08Yankees have four runs on five, it's the Royals three runs on four.
- 1:09:14Relief starter Dennis Leonard in the first inning. Leonard first three batters, they all three had base hits and two of them scored.
- 1:09:200-2 delivery, low and outside, one ball and two strikes.
- 1:09:26The winner goes to Cincinnati and the loser goes home and that's, the whole season boils down to one ball game.
- 1:09:35So one-two pitch, fastball low, two balls and two strikes.
- 1:09:42The Yankees lost three games during the season due to rain that were not made up.
- 1:09:47So they played 159 regular season games, four playoff games and now this is their 164th of one game season.
- 1:09:57Two-two pitch, it's at the plate for the low, ball three and it's three and two on Oscar Gamble.
- 1:10:03Willie Randolph is on deck.
- 1:10:08Down two nothing in the first, Rivers tripled for the Yankees, white.
- 1:10:12He got an infield hit, Rivers scored and white stole second.
- 1:10:16Went to third on Munson's base hit and scored on on Chris Chambers sacrifice fly.
- 1:10:21The Yankees then got two more runs in the third to take a four to three lead.
- 1:10:25So wide, three-two pitch to Gamble, a bouncing ball slowly charged second, charging Rohan, he's got a quick throw, he's out.
- 1:10:31A good play by Mayberry on a throw in the dirt.
- 1:10:35Gamble is out on a close play at first base and credit Mayberry with making that play.
- 1:10:42Willie Randolph will be the batter.
- 1:10:45Randolph fly to right field his first time up.
- 1:10:48He is two for 15 in the series with one run batted in.
- 1:10:52During the season he is 267.
- 1:10:56Right hand hitter, Addy, lines one caught by Mayberry at first base.
- 1:11:01And they're at two down.
- 1:11:06Brett Stanley will be the batter.
- 1:11:08Stanley grounded after Brett at third in the second inning.
- 1:11:11So he's out for one but he's had a good series.
- 1:11:14Five for 13.
- 1:11:17Brett really bolstered the Yankee infield this year.
- 1:11:22Playing shortstop.
- 1:11:25Check this swing on a slow breaking ball, ball one.
- 1:11:28Pitch was a bit low.
- 1:11:30Brett Stanley has been around in the major leagues, Seattle, Milwaukee, Cleveland, San Diego, and the Yankees.
- 1:11:371-0 pitch to him.
- 1:11:39Just missed low again, two balls and no strikes.
- 1:11:44One thing about a guy like Stanley, he's always in demand.
- 1:11:47One team lets him go, another team wants him.
- 1:11:512-0 pitch from Split-Harts.
- 1:11:53Fast ball, low again, ball three.
- 1:11:57They play Stanley to the off field and the outfield.
- 1:12:00On the infield they play him up the middle with Rojas cheated a bit toward the bag at second.
- 1:12:07Split-Harts, 3-0 pitch.
- 1:12:09Strike called, it's 3-1.
- 1:12:11Stanley looks down at Coach Hauser and he'll probably take another one.
- 1:12:18Nicky Rivers was on deck, there were two out.
- 1:12:21Split-Harts fires, strike two called.
- 1:12:25Brett Stanley probably takes more pitches than any other Yankee batter.
- 1:12:29He does not mind getting that free pick at the first base.
- 1:12:34Now the payoff delivery.
- 1:12:36Fast and low, ball four, Stanley is on.
- 1:12:41Second walk given up by Split-Harts.
- 1:12:44Now with two outs the Yankees have a base runner and the batter is Nicky Rivers who is 2 for 2.
- 1:12:50Rivers tripled over the head of Celeste of the Polkets his first time up.
- 1:12:55Then he ripped a single to center field, he has scored both times he's been on base.
- 1:13:01The Yankees lead 4-3.
- 1:13:05Rivers left hand batter, Brett in at third on the grass.
- 1:13:09And a swing and a miss on an inside fifth.
- 1:13:13Nicky Rivers, very possibly the fastest man in baseball.
- 1:13:21He missed 22 games over the regular season due to injuries.
- 1:13:27Good time, Reagan ball on his drill to the right side, base hit.
- 1:13:31Stanley around second base time for third.
- 1:13:34McCrae still comes in a second and the Yankees have runners on the corners.
- 1:13:38Nicky Rivers is 3 for 3.
- 1:13:48That is the Yankees sixth hit on the ball game and they're staring off Split-Harts.
- 1:13:53Now with two outs the Yankees are threatening.
- 1:13:57The batter is Roy White.
- 1:14:00He's a good hitting left fielder. Roy has been on base twice with an infield single which drilled in a run and with a walk.
- 1:14:08He has also scored two runs and he is still at a base.
- 1:14:12The senior Yankee first put on the thin stripes in 1965 and a regular since 1967.
- 1:14:24The set by split-off, the infielders up the middle, the outfielders spread and the pitch is high and outside ball one.
- 1:14:34In the Royal Bullpen, right-hander Monty Fadden and left-hander Andy Hassler are warming up.
- 1:14:46White spread out on the batter's side.
- 1:14:50Waiting for split-off, the runners lead first and third and the pitch outside and high ball two.
- 1:15:00In 1971, Roy White fielded 1,000.
- 1:15:05Did not make an error and let's see it. The only Yankee ever to have a perfect fielding record for fall season.
- 1:15:18Two off-pitch joins. Outside, ball three.
- 1:15:26Every time, well not every time, both times the Rebers has been on base while split-off has been pitching.
- 1:15:33Split-off has completely lost his concentration on the hitter.
- 1:15:41As Commander Tosh just split-off, now he goes back to his second base position.
- 1:15:49Three balls and no strikes on Roy White. Rebers is first, Stanley is third, two out, three off-pitch.
- 1:15:56He takes high, ball four and the bases are loaded.
- 1:16:02Rebers drops out of second.
- 1:16:06Line is on with a walk. Rodney Herzog is coming out and that is going to be all I think for fall split-off.
- 1:16:21Herzog looks to his bullpen and with the right hand hitting, Fairmontson coming up, he'll bring Marty Patton into the ballgame.
- 1:16:37A new record for a new Yankee stadium in attendance has just been announced.
- 1:16:4156,821. Marty Patton is on the mound now for the Kansas City Royals.
- 1:16:56Patton is making his second appearance.
- 1:17:05And his only other appearance, he came in and faced one batter and gave up an impeccable walk and was promptly taken out of the ballgame.
- 1:17:15A move we did not understand from what he heard, but nonetheless.
- 1:17:20And the right hander.
- 1:17:26He's ready to pitch to Fairmontson.
- 1:17:31Bases loaded and two out. There's a windup by Patton. The right hander's pitch is hit in the air to left field.
- 1:17:37But waiting for it, Pochette, and he makes the catch to retire the side.
- 1:17:41So Patton with one pitch gets the Royals out of trouble.
- 1:17:45For the Yankees, no runs, one hit. They leave the bases loaded and at the end of four, the score is New York four and Kansas City three.
- 1:17:52We're ready for the fifth inning here at Yankee Stadium. Chris Chambliss.
- 1:17:58As you may have heard earlier.
- 1:18:04Has driven in two runs in the ballgame.
- 1:18:07Seven RBI's for the series.
- 1:18:14Tying a championship series record.
- 1:18:20Chris has done an outstanding job for the Yankees.
- 1:18:23Perhaps a bit unsung. A lot of folks may not appreciate.
- 1:18:28What Chambliss has done not only with the bats this year, but with the glove down at first base. He has a much improved first baseman.
- 1:18:35Did it through very diligent work.
- 1:18:39Willie Pondek will lead off.
- 1:18:43Right hand hitting Pondek has struck out his only time up.
- 1:18:48He has six hits in the series. Figueroa's first pitch has flied out and missed strike one.
- 1:18:56The catcher Buck Martinez is on deck and then Al Cullen.
- 1:19:00The Yankees lead the Royals four to three.
- 1:19:03Figueroa offers inside. One ball to one strike.
- 1:19:15Willie Pondek at five four and one hundred and forty pounds presents a very small strike zone.
- 1:19:22Figueroa's and fires the pitches popped up.
- 1:19:24Prowl outside of first. Chambliss is after it. He has room and makes the catch.
- 1:19:29Chris Chambliss near the rolled up top of the line in foul territory. Fold it in.
- 1:19:44That'll bring up Buck Martinez.
- 1:19:54Martinez single the right field to drive it around and he lines the first pitch over the head of Stanley at a left base hit.
- 1:20:01So Martinez is two for two.
- 1:20:04And the Royals have their fifth base hit off Ed Figueroa.
- 1:20:08One out a runner at first on the top of the order coming on.
- 1:20:17Now Cullen bounce to Randolph. Willie made a great play on the ball in the first inning.
- 1:20:23Didn't panic. Didn't try to short hop. Just waited for the ball to come down.
- 1:20:29And threw him out. Then he threw him out on a ground ball on the second. So Cullen's is 0 for 2.
- 1:20:36Chambliss holding on Martinez at first. Figueroa deals and he's high with a slider. Ball one.
- 1:20:46Tom Poquette is on deck.
- 1:20:52Infield plays up the middle. The outfielder's spread.
- 1:20:561-0 delivery. Change up is fast and chucked up. Stanley has. Goes to the bag himself. Goes to first and gets the double play.
- 1:21:04Red Stanley did not throw to Randolph. He went to the bag himself.
- 1:21:08And then threw Cullen's out to complete the double play. No runs. A base hit.
- 1:21:13No errors and nobody left. At the end of four and a half innings. It's the Yankees. Four in the Royals. Three.
- 1:21:19The Royals bring a new pitcher on as we go to the bottom half of the fifth inning.
- 1:21:23Left hander Andy Hassler with the Yankee left hand hitters Chambliss, May and Nettles and Gamble coming up.
- 1:21:30Andy Hassler. Picked up from the California Angels in midseason.
- 1:21:38He was one shot of a major league record when he lost 18 games in a row.
- 1:21:46After he lost his 18, he won four in a row.
- 1:21:52He pitched well against the Yankees during the regular season.
- 1:21:56Andy Hassler. Now let's check out his record.
- 1:22:07He completes his warm up draws and will be ready to face Chris Chambliss.
- 1:22:21Andy Hassler is all in one in the championship series.
- 1:22:31Six five innings allowed. Four hits.
- 1:22:36Walk three, struck out three.
- 1:22:45Chris Chambliss has driven in two runs tonight with a sacrifice fly and a ground ball.
- 1:22:53He is off for one officially.
- 1:22:56Chris has eight hits in the series in 18 official at bat. Seven runs got it in.
- 1:23:01And the first pitch to him is a ball inside.
- 1:23:07The Yankees lead four to three.
- 1:23:15The wind up by the left hander, Hassler. The pitcher curve is hit in the air.
- 1:23:19The right center field and his deep going back McCray and the ball is off the wall.
- 1:23:23McCray plays it on about and Chambliss is in with a stand up double.
- 1:23:28The ball hit on the warning track in front of the 385 foot sign.
- 1:23:33He has collected his ninth championship series hit.
- 1:23:40That ties Steve Rose's playoff series record nine base hits for Chambliss.
- 1:23:46He has hit in every game of the championship series.
- 1:23:50He hit in the last nine games of the regular season.
- 1:23:53He has a 14 game hitting streak going.
- 1:24:00The Yankees long ago set a new record for two base hits in championship play.
- 1:24:13Steve Rose in the 1972 National League Championship Series had nine base hits for the Cincinnati Reds.
- 1:24:26Carlos May will be the batter.
- 1:24:31The Yankees now have seven hits in the ball game.
- 1:24:38Carlos May has played twice to center field.
- 1:24:41Left hander against left hander. Chambliss leads away at second.
- 1:24:44The corner men are in. Brett and Mayberry.
- 1:24:48And the pitch is in for a strike.
- 1:24:54Brett stays in close to third and on the grass.
- 1:24:57The left fielder pochette straight away.
- 1:25:00Down in center field, Cowans is straight away.
- 1:25:02And in right field, McCray is almost lost.
- 1:25:04He's way back. Swing and a missed strike field.
- 1:25:08No balls and two strikes to Carlos.
- 1:25:13Yankees lead it four to three.
- 1:25:16Chambliss at second. Nobody out.
- 1:25:22Hansler takes plenty of time reading Martinez's signs.
- 1:25:26Now the tall left hander drops the hand.
- 1:25:28The kick, the 0-2 pitch, he struck him out swinging.
- 1:25:32Like a good fastball, he just challenged Carlos May.
- 1:25:40Only the second Yankee to strike out in the ball game.
- 1:25:43Greg Meadows is the batter.
- 1:25:46Meadows is four for sixteen in the series with two home runs, four runs, but it is.
- 1:25:50Tonight he has popped up both times for the shortstop Potec.
- 1:26:03Potec plays him almost behind second base and that forces Chambliss to shorten up on his lead.
- 1:26:09Now Martinez goes out to the mound as he and Hansler are having a little trouble with their signs.
- 1:26:16With Potec playing Meadows almost behind the bag, Chambliss cannot take much of a lead.
- 1:26:23And he might have trouble scoring on a base hit.
- 1:26:30The left fielder, Poquette, is being waved in. He was playing Meadows deep unless they waved him in.
- 1:26:35The center fielder, Cowan, shades around toward the right field side.
- 1:26:39And McCray in right field is almost back at the warning track and well over toward the corner.
- 1:26:47Hansler is ready and the pitch to Nettles. Fast and low for a ball.
- 1:26:58Hansler Gamble is on deck.
- 1:27:08He's going to pass it over to the 1-0 pitch to Greg Nettles.
- 1:27:11He pops it up on the right side.
- 1:27:14Mayberry, the first baseman on the foul line, calling for it and now takes it in fair territory.
- 1:27:19And there are two outs.
- 1:27:24Chambliss is second two down and Hansler Gamble is about her.
- 1:27:28Gamble has been called out on strikes and grounded at the second.
- 1:27:37And the first off comes out on deck.
- 1:27:47Hansler, a very deliberate worker.
- 1:27:54Check the runner and the pitch is swung on and fouled at the feet of the catcher, Martinez.
- 1:28:01Wait on by Arthur Thratz. Takes a look at it.
- 1:28:04Drops it back out to Hansler.
- 1:28:06No balls and one strike, two outs. The Yankees lead 4-3 here in the bottom half of the fifth.
- 1:28:16Against Gamble, the gap is in left center field with Collins shaded over toward right.
- 1:28:21Will catch shades a bit toward center but not that much.
- 1:28:27Breaking ball misses outside and it's 1-1.
- 1:28:35You just imagine the scene here at the stadium.
- 1:28:38The Yankees win this ball game. Yankee fans have waited since 1964.
- 1:28:461-1 delivery. Inside almost hitting.
- 1:28:51Bill Kane, the Yankee traveling secretary and statistician, is sitting in the booth with us.
- 1:28:56Bill, get out the calculator and figure if they can rebuild the stadium in time for more play against Cincinnati if the Yankees win this one.
- 1:29:04Oh boy. Two balls and a strike on Gamble. The pitch, line, foul down the left side and in the seat.
- 1:29:14Two balls and two strikes.
- 1:29:18Gamble is trapped back to second base.
- 1:29:22Willie Randolph is waiting on deck.
- 1:29:28This has been quite a series.
- 1:29:31The Yankees won the first game, the Royals won the second. The Yankees won the third, the Royals won the fourth.
- 1:29:40Two balls and two strikes.
- 1:29:45Two outs and now Gamble sits out.
- 1:29:50I don't know whether you believe in tradition or superstition,
- 1:29:54but it's never been a team in championship series play that has won the second game that has lost the series.
- 1:30:02Two and two pitch coming. Inside almost hitting again. Ball free.
- 1:30:10There's a lot of records that have been set in this series. Why not set another one?
- 1:30:23And again to the count.
- 1:30:28Hansler appears in.
- 1:30:31Nice record.
- 1:30:33Playoff set. It is a check swing, bounce it out of third base line, they let it roll foul.
- 1:30:39Hansler bounced off the mound as soon as the ball kicked foul. He slapped it.
- 1:30:45I don't know what brings it to mind, but I thought it was a real cute line I read in one of the New York papers today.
- 1:30:50Bob Euker, who broadcast the Milwaukee Brewer games in the American League and has been working for ABC
- 1:30:58and their telecast of the championship series, was asked about his greatest day in baseball.
- 1:31:05He said he remembered it well. He said his greatest day in baseball was on a night in San Francisco after a day game.
- 1:31:16I asked Bob if that was a true story and he said, right, you can believe it.
- 1:31:22And I now never remember or never forget.
- 1:31:28Three and two. Hansler steps out.
- 1:31:39Hansler takes a long time to repeat. Little leery about throwing that baseball up there.
- 1:31:48Gambler's ways away again. And a three, two, six. Low ball for Gamble 1.
- 1:32:07And here's your gamble at first base. Chris Chambliss at second.
- 1:32:12And the batter will be Willie Randolph. Randolph has flied to right and lined out to the first baseman.
- 1:32:25Hansler kicks and delivers high. Ball one.
- 1:32:30And Galen Sisco, the pitching coach, comes out again.
- 1:32:36They've won a pretty good trail from the Kansas City Royal Dugout to the pitcher's mound tonight.
- 1:32:41Four pitchers have been used in the ball game.
- 1:32:45Cisco's made about three or four trips out there.
- 1:32:52And Galen Sisco pitched what for the Mets? Four years.
- 1:33:07That's like being a hitting instructor for Ted Williams team.
- 1:33:25Willie Randolph batting with runners at first and second and two outs. Two balls and no strike time.
- 1:33:30Hansler kicks it off. Here's how the pitcher's bounce foul at the plate.
- 1:33:37When Galen Sisco was the pitching coach for Bob Lemon, I asked him just how it felt to be a pitching coach for a man that everybody knew would eventually be in the Hall of Fame.
- 1:33:46And he said, well, there is one thing, the one thing he could do that Lem couldn't, and that was communicate better with the younger ballplayers.
- 1:33:56One strike out, the pitcher Randolph high and outside. Off-speed pitch that time from Hansler.
- 1:34:04Three balls and a strike, two outs, two odds, and the Yankees rated four to three here in the bottom half of the fifth inning.
- 1:34:14Red Stanley is on deck. Three-one, pitch high, ball four, the bases are loaded.
- 1:34:22The Yankees have moved on to third. Oscar Gamble goes down to second.
- 1:34:27Willie Randolph on first. For the second inning in a row, the Yankees have loaded the bases.
- 1:34:34And with two outs, the batter is Brett Stanley.
- 1:34:40Early in the year when the Yankees topped the Red Sox with being their main opponent for the American Lake Championship,
- 1:34:49Brett Stanley really saw Red Sox picking up.
- 1:34:53Right hand batter, and he takes a fast ball over, strike off.
- 1:35:06Brett Stanley was the last Yankee to hit a grand slam home run in the old Yankee Stadium.
- 1:35:11He's up with the bases loaded.
- 1:35:13And the drive caught by the second baseman, Rojas, to retire to side.
- 1:35:19No runs, one hit, the Yankees leave the bases loaded at the end of five.
- 1:35:22The score, the Yankees four and the Royals three.
- 1:35:26Well, we talked a few moments ago about Chris Chambliss having nine base hits.
- 1:35:31Thurman Munson with two base hits in this ball game tonight also has nine.
- 1:35:35So both he and Chambliss have tied three draws for the most hits in a Major League Championship Series.
- 1:35:42And of course both Munson and Chambliss will have another time at bat in this ball game.
- 1:35:57Not far to the players themselves, I guess the biggest stir from the crowd game when Telle Sovales came in to take his seat behind the Yankee dugout.
- 1:36:10Must have been a big thrill for him to get really a standing ovation from the folks there who recognized him.
- 1:36:20We go to the top half of the sixth inning.
- 1:36:22Tom Fouquet will lead off for the Kansas City Royals.
- 1:36:25Fouquet has struck out and bounced back to figure off.
- 1:36:29Biggie had a little problem in the first inning when he gave up a two-run homer to Mayberry.
- 1:36:34Since then he's pretty well settled down.
- 1:36:36His first pitch over the low ball one.
- 1:36:39Fouquet a left-hand batter.
- 1:36:471-0 delivery.
- 1:36:48Strike on the inside corner.
- 1:36:52Fouquet has had a couple of knee operations.
- 1:36:54He's also had surgery on his face as a result of hitting the wall in Kansas City earlier this year.
- 1:37:00The youngsters had some problems early in his Major League career.
- 1:37:04The 1-1 pitch.
- 1:37:05Bouncing ball going Randolph to his right.
- 1:37:07Well, he has it set so he's out.
- 1:37:121-0.
- 1:37:16And now George Brett.
- 1:37:21George Brett won the American League batting title in the last game of the season.
- 1:37:28The Kansas City Royals were playing the Minnesota Twins.
- 1:37:34Three men in the ball game had a chance to win it.
- 1:37:36Brett, his team-mate Hal McRae, and also Rod Garou of Minnesota.
- 1:37:43Brett got it inside the park home walker on to win it.
- 1:37:46The first pitch of the left-hand batter is high.
- 1:37:48Ball one.
- 1:37:51Brett doubled in the first inning he was on when Mayberry homered.
- 1:37:54In the third, Brett flied to center.
- 1:37:56He's had seven hits in this series.
- 1:38:00The pitch is outside.
- 1:38:01The count is two balls and no strikes.
- 1:38:13One out.
- 1:38:14The base is empty.
- 1:38:15The Yankees lead 4-3.
- 1:38:18Pitch to Brett.
- 1:38:19High ball three.
- 1:38:20Three balls and no strikes.
- 1:38:23It's hard to defend against the George Brett.
- 1:38:25He flaps the ball around.
- 1:38:27Does not go for power.
- 1:38:28He might be a home run hitter if he tried, but instead he's an average hitter.
- 1:38:34For high average, I mean.
- 1:38:36Strike call three and one.
- 1:38:38During the season he had 34 doubles, 14 dribbles, seven homers, 67 runs batted in.
- 1:38:46He had 215 base hits.
- 1:38:48A new Kansas City record.
- 1:38:50Three-one delivery.

- 1:59:25That'll be all for Andy Asler.
- 1:59:29The Royals will use their first pitcher, the ballgame.
- 1:59:36To recap the games of this 1976 championship series.
- 1:59:41The opening game was played out in Kansas City on Sunday afternoon.
- 1:59:44Saturday afternoon, rather.
- 1:59:47The Yankees won it 4-1 behind Catfish Hunter.
- 1:59:51Hunter beat Larry Gura.
- 1:59:53Then on Saturday night in Kansas City, the Royals came back and won it 7-3.
- 1:59:58Paul Slitnor pitching good relief pitch.
- 2:00:00Relief baseball, he won it.
- 2:00:01Over at Figueroa.
- 2:00:03So the Tier Series was tied up in one up piece when they came back to New York for a night game on Tuesday.
- 2:00:08And the Yankees won that one 5-3 as Zach Ellis beat Andy Asler.
- 2:00:13And last night, the Royals came right back and beat the Yankees 7-4 here in New York.
- 2:00:18With Doug Byrd coming out of the bullpen and winning that ballgame.
- 2:00:21And Catfish Hunter, the loser.
- 2:00:23So the Cat, so far in the series, has won one and lost one.
- 2:00:29Zach Ellis has won one, lost none for the Yankees.
- 2:00:33For the Royals, Byrd's off has won one, lost none.
- 2:00:38And Doug Byrd has won one and lost none.
- 2:00:41The losing pitch is Larry Girl, 0-1 for the Royals.
- 2:00:44And that figure off, 0-1 for the New York Yankees.
- 2:00:48So this is it, fifth and final game.
- 2:00:52Jerry tied it to a piece, but Terrell Mow is finished.
- 2:00:56And Willie Randolph steps in.
- 2:01:04Yankees have six runs on 10 hits, the Royals three runs on seven base hits.
- 2:01:09Each team has made an error.
- 2:01:10We're playing the bottom of the seventh.
- 2:01:12Nettles off second base with two outs.
- 2:01:15As Latel sets.
- 2:01:18And the first pitch to Randolph.
- 2:01:20Fastball is up and in a ball.
- 2:01:23Willie's flying to right field, he's lying to first base and he's walked.
- 2:01:27He's 0-2.
- 2:01:29Steve Mingoria, left-hander, gets up and starts losing up for the Royals.
- 2:01:35Latel sets again.
- 2:01:38And the 1-0 pitch.
- 2:01:40Bounced up the middle to his left and charging his pot-tech.
- 2:01:42Clips on the first base and got Randolph.
- 2:01:45Moving to third base is Greg Nettles.
- 2:01:48Another two outs.
- 2:01:52And the batter is Fred Stanley.
- 2:01:55Stanley is bounced to third, he's walking his line to second, so he's 0-2.
- 2:02:05Fred was a 2-38 hitter on the year for the Yankees.
- 2:02:17He's 5-14 in the series.
- 2:02:20And here's the first pitch to it.
- 2:02:26Inside a ball.
- 2:02:29Looking ahead for the Royals.
- 2:02:34They'll have the top of their batting order up against Figueroa at the top of the eighth.
- 2:02:38Cowan, Folkett, and Brett.
- 2:02:42Latel takes a long look for the side.
- 2:02:49And now the right-hander sets.
- 2:02:53And the pitch.
- 2:02:55Swung on, loop to right field, coming on his back right.
- 2:02:57Still coming and he's got it on the run.
- 2:03:00Al McCray charging all the way, made the catch and shallow right for out number three.
- 2:03:04The Yankees, no runs, no hits.
- 2:03:06A walk and a man left on base.
- 2:03:08We're playing seventh, and at the end of seventh, the Yankees take the Royals.
- 2:03:12Three.
- 2:03:14The Yankees lead six to three, and Al Cowan, Tom Folkett, and George Brett are two for the Kansas City Royals.
- 2:03:27Now it's over four so far.
- 2:03:29Check that over three.
- 2:03:30He hasn't gotten the ball out of the infield.
- 2:03:32Bounced off right for second and bounced for short.
- 2:03:34Bounced into a double play in the fifth.
- 2:03:42And now Figaro has scattered at seven base hits.
- 2:03:47Gave up two hits in the first two innings.
- 2:03:49Two in the first, two in the second, a total of four.
- 2:03:55They retired eight in a row before Martinez got a base hit in the fifth and single.
- 2:03:59Then Cowan bounced into the double play.
- 2:04:02Mayberry got a single off the wall and right field in the sixth.
- 2:04:06And Patek got a single off nettle's glove in the seventh.
- 2:04:10So here's Cowan.
- 2:04:12And he takes up and in a ball.
- 2:04:24They play Cowan straight away.
- 2:04:25Here's Figaro's next hit.
- 2:04:27Foul straight back up on the screen, a ball to try.
- 2:04:37And three crowds a little over 56,000 here at the stadium for the three games.
- 2:04:51Figaro now with a new baseball rock, kicks the deal to one, one, six.
- 2:04:54Line pass, that'll be hit left field.
- 2:04:57Right over the corner comes up with a ball and Cowan's at the hole in first base.
- 2:05:03And here comes Billy Martin.
- 2:05:08Now Cowan is jumping on a high pitch and slamming it.
- 2:05:11The left field for base hit.
- 2:05:13Martin out he waved with a rough hand.
- 2:05:15He must want Grant Jackson.
- 2:05:17And it's going to be Grant Jackson.
- 2:05:25Listen to the hand for Ed Figaro.
- 2:05:48So Ed Figaro leaves and Grant Jackson's coming on.
- 2:05:53And it looks like the Royals are going to make a change.
- 2:05:56They bring back Polkett and they're going to send it up a right-handed batter, Jim Wolpert.
- 2:06:12So Figaro leaves.
- 2:06:14He went seven innings, pitched to one man here in the eighth.
- 2:06:17Gave up three runs on eight base hits.
- 2:06:19He struck out three and did not walk about it.
- 2:06:24And he got quite a hand as he left.
- 2:06:27He's talking about Figaro and how he was a stopper last year for the California Angels.
- 2:06:31And picked up great baseball for the Angels here in 1976.
- 2:06:35Ended up 19 wins, 10 losses.
- 2:06:38And he missed a couple of times for his 20th and then got rained out the final time on the Sunday,
- 2:06:43The final game of the year for the Cleveland Indians.
- 2:06:47Figaro has got to be satisfied with what he's accomplished here in 1976.
- 2:06:53So he leaves with the Yankees up 6-3 over the Royals and Grant Jackson comes on.
- 2:07:09Jackson's making his second appearance in the series for the Yankees.
- 2:07:15He pitched here yesterday afternoon, pitched two in the third innings, gave up one run on two base hits.
- 2:07:21He struck out two and walked one.
- 2:07:24Jim Wolpert comes on to back for Tom Bochette with a runner at first base.
- 2:07:29Nobody odd in the eighth inning.
- 2:07:30The Yankees leading 6-3 over the Royals.
- 2:07:36Wolpert takes the shot.
- 2:07:46Jackson works quickly.
- 2:07:48This is high, one ball, one shot.
- 2:07:55Wolpert has been up nine times.
- 2:07:56He has one base hit.
- 2:07:57Here's the 1-1 pitch to it.
- 2:08:00Swung on and missed the ball and two strikes.
- 2:08:03Jackson third base and George Flick.
- 2:08:14Jackson straightens, sets it to the bell.
- 2:08:15Jackson runner and the 1-2.
- 2:08:17Foul straight back to the screen.
- 2:08:19Counting names of all two strikes on Jim Wolpert.
- 2:08:22Yankees set up looking for two, except for Chambers.
- 2:08:24He's holding Cowan here for his base.
- 2:08:31Jackson changes base ball with own play to apply hard play.
- 2:08:35Now Chambers will play behind Cowan to third base.
- 2:08:40Royals down three.
- 2:08:41Chambers does not think Cowan might move towards set.
- 2:08:45Here's the 1-2.
- 2:08:46The curve ball is high.
- 2:08:48Two balls, two strikes.
- 2:08:53Marky Lyle and Dick Cidrill warming in the Yankee bull pit.
- 2:09:01Jackson's set and the 2-2 pitch.
- 2:09:04Low, three balls, two strikes.
- 2:09:15Now Jackson ready again.
- 2:09:16Here's the 3-2 pitch.
- 2:09:18Line center field.
- 2:09:19Rivers started back.
- 2:09:20Now he's coming on.
- 2:09:21He can't get to it.
- 2:09:23Base set.
- 2:09:24Throw in the second base will not be in time.
- 2:09:26Rivers took just one step back.
- 2:09:28He couldn't have gotten that ball anyway.
- 2:09:30It was a broken bat looper in the center field.
- 2:09:32He decoyed Cowan's offense.
- 2:09:34Throw it in the second, but Cowan's on safe there.
- 2:09:37So a broken bat single in the center field by Jim Wolpert.
- 2:09:40And the tying lead now is at the plate.
- 2:09:42That's George Flick.
- 2:09:47Cowan's down at second.
- 2:09:50Brett on it first.
- 2:09:51Check that Wolpert on it first.
- 2:09:53And Brett's the batter.
- 2:09:58Brett is double in court.
- 2:10:00He's flying to center field, and he's lined to center field.
- 2:10:03One for three.
- 2:10:05And on deck is John Mayberry.
- 2:10:09And these Royals do not give up.
- 2:10:11They keep fighting.
- 2:10:13They don't hit the long ball too often, but they get the bat on the ball.
- 2:10:17As Jackson sets the check to run it.
- 2:10:20The pitch is high.
- 2:10:29Cowan moving off second.
- 2:10:32Wolpert off first.
- 2:10:33Here's the one over the breast.
- 2:10:35Plung on it down the right field line.
- 2:10:37That ball is going to be double it is.
- 2:10:40Come on, a home run for George Flick who's got a tie ball game.
- 2:10:47One hit one right down the right field line about 10 rows back in the lower deck.
- 2:10:52Cowan scores.
- 2:10:54Wolpert scores.
- 2:10:56And now Brett scores.
- 2:10:57And the tie is for the Yankees, 6 and the Royals, 6.
- 2:11:10That's the Royals second home run of the series.
- 2:11:13It's fellow John Mayberry hits their first in the first inning with a bat on.
- 2:11:17The Yankees swing their infield and their off field around toward the right side now for Mayberry.
- 2:11:22And the curve ball is over his head.
- 2:11:26Mayberry is in a two run over.
- 2:11:28He's bowed his second and he's single the right field.
- 2:11:30So he's two for three.
- 2:11:32One swing of the bat and the ball game is all tied up.
- 2:11:39Here's the one oh.
- 2:11:40Breaking ball is on the inside corner.
- 2:11:42It's one and one.
- 2:11:48On deck is Al McCray.
- 2:11:49Here's the one one pitch to Mayberry.
- 2:11:52Plung on it.
- 2:11:54Mayberry trying for another home run.
- 2:11:56It's one and two.
- 2:12:05Here's the one two pitch to Mayberry.
- 2:12:07Swung on, popped straight back.
- 2:12:09It'll be up on the screen.
- 2:12:10No play for much.
- 2:12:12The Royals here in the eighth inning got a lead off single by Al Cowan.
- 2:12:15That got rid of Figueroa.
- 2:12:17Jackson came on.
- 2:12:18Wolpert batted for Polkett.
- 2:12:20He's broken bat single and center then George Brett, a three run shot.
- 2:12:25We've got a tie game.
- 2:12:26That ball just misses inside.
- 2:12:28Two balls, two strikes on Mayberry.
- 2:12:35Drodd-Lyle still loosening up in the Yankee bullpen.
- 2:12:37Here's the two two pitch.
- 2:12:39Third ball is bowled back.
- 2:12:43And it now remains two and two.
- 2:12:47Yankees have Stanley off behind second base Randolph playing a deep second.
- 2:12:53And Chambers back on the grass at first on the outfield grass.
- 2:12:57Here's the two two pitch to Mayberry.
- 2:12:59That ball catches wing, bounces at the second.
- 2:13:02Randolph there, gobbles it up, flips it on the chambers, and there's one away.
- 2:13:09There was one out, nobody on.
- 2:13:10That'll bring on Al McCray, the right fielder.
- 2:13:13He's dropped off, he's popped the chambers at first base, and he's bounced back to the mound.
- 2:13:18He's 0-3.
- 2:13:22Yankees in the bottom of this inning will have Rivers, White, and Munchen.
- 2:13:29Against Mark Lattell.
- 2:13:32First pitch to McCray, takes outside a ball.
- 2:13:36On deck is Jamie Quirk.
- 2:13:40He might be bowled back though.
- 2:13:42He's a left-handed hitter.
- 2:13:44High two balls, no strikes on McCray.
- 2:13:52Here's the two-oh.
- 2:13:55High ball three, three balls, no strikes.
- 2:14:01One on, nobody on.
- 2:14:02Scores tied. Yankee six, Royals six.
- 2:14:05Playing the top half of the eighth inning.
- 2:14:07McCray backs out a couple of times.
- 2:14:09Now he gets back in.
- 2:14:11Here's a three-one to him.
- 2:14:13Swung on, it's deep to left, but White's there.
- 2:14:16McEnery got it.
- 2:14:18Two outs.
- 2:14:19McCray backs out, wanted to get the green light.
- 2:14:21Got it, it's a ball hard, but right to Roy White.
- 2:14:24So there's two outs now, still nobody on.
- 2:14:27George Brett took care of that with the three-run home run.
- 2:14:30The batter will be Jamie Quirk.
- 2:14:33He'll slide left, bounce to short, line to the first baseman, Chambers.
- 2:14:37Jamie Quirk is open three.
- 2:14:42With a three-run home run.
- 2:14:45He got it all.
- 2:14:46When he hit it, he jumped.
- 2:14:47He knew he got it.
- 2:14:50Here's the two-strike back.
- 2:14:53Backs him off the ball and two strikes.
- 2:15:07Jack's a-looking in.
- 2:15:08Now the one-two.
- 2:15:10Her ball is one-run.
- 2:15:11And this Quirk goes down swinging for the third off.
- 2:15:14But the Royals take it up three runs on the three-run home run by George Brett,
- 2:15:18nayside the ball game.
- 2:15:20We're going to the bottom of the eighth, scores offside, Yankee six to Kansas City Royals.
- 2:15:24Six.
- 2:15:25Wilford.
- 2:15:26Now Jim Wolford, who's got that key single, a broken back single in the center of field,
- 2:15:30just ahead of George Brett's home run, stays in the ball game and he'll play left field.
- 2:15:34So the Royals have Wolford in left, they've got Cowans in center,
- 2:15:38and they've got Hal McClay out of right field.
- 2:15:41The infield's still the same, but at third.
- 2:15:44Contact to shortstop, Rohan at second base, Mayberry at first.
- 2:15:47Martina's catching.
- 2:15:51And the first pitcher, a pitcher used by, and by Whitey Herzog.
- 2:15:56Mark Lachell is still on the mound.
- 2:15:59Leonard's started, Lachell came on on the first.
- 2:16:01Patton in the fourth.
- 2:16:03Hasler in the fifth.
- 2:16:05Lachell came on last inning.
- 2:16:12Here's Mickey Rivers.
- 2:16:13He's four for four, a triple and three singles, three runs short.
- 2:16:19And the first pitch to Mickey.
- 2:16:21Back ball tails away, a ball.
- 2:16:26Rivers is eighth for 22 in the series.
- 2:16:31Brett way in at third base on the grass.
- 2:16:34Back ball is high, two balls, no strikes.
- 2:16:39Doug Burdard, a right-hander, and Steve Mingoria, a left-hander,
- 2:16:43warming up in the Royal Bowl pitch.
- 2:16:47Leading on deck is Roy White.
- 2:16:51Here's the two out of river.
- 2:16:53He fakes a bunt, fakes a strike, it's two and one.
- 2:16:55Big gap for Mickey in the right center field.
- 2:16:58They've got Wolford over there in the line playing shallow in left.
- 2:17:01They've got Cowans over toward left center.
- 2:17:03McClay straight away in right.
- 2:17:07Here's the two on the river.
- 2:17:09In the air, right field, going back is McClay.
- 2:17:12He's got room, waiting.
- 2:17:14He's got it.
- 2:17:15Oh, Rivers goes out for the first time in the ball game.
- 2:17:18A fly ball to the right fielder, Al McClay.
- 2:17:21That'll bring on Roy White.
- 2:17:32White batting a left-handed against Mattel.
- 2:17:41Roy has only been at bat officially once in the ball game
- 2:17:43when he beat out a single to Dee Shorts,
- 2:17:45scoring the Rivers in the first inning.
- 2:17:47He also scored after seaming a base.
- 2:17:49He walked and scored in the third, walked again in the fourth,
- 2:17:52and sacrificed in the sixth.
- 2:17:55So he's one for one.
- 2:17:58Yankee sixth on the Royal six, playing the bottom half of the eighth inning.
- 2:18:01One out, nobody off.
- 2:18:05Mr. Barnburner.
- 2:18:09First pitch is hit, one hopper, and gobbled up by Mayberry.
- 2:18:12He'll take himself a first base.
- 2:18:13There are two outs.
- 2:18:15Self-play for Mayberry.
- 2:18:16Short hopper, he saves one of us.
- 2:18:19McClay got his man.
- 2:18:21So with two outs, nobody on, that'll bring on Sir Muckston.
- 2:18:24Muckston's had a great series.
- 2:18:26He has 10 hits and 22 times it back.
- 2:18:31He and Jambals each have 10 hits.
- 2:18:33That's the new championship series record, so think six.
- 2:18:37Muckston has singled three times in this ball game.
- 2:18:39He's driven in two runs.
- 2:18:40He's also fly to left field.
- 2:18:48He's great enough for Muckston.
- 2:18:50Kidrow now gets up and starts warming up in the Yankee bullpen.
- 2:18:54Here's the first pitch to Thurman.
- 2:18:56That ball is one on a mix.
- 2:19:00The Royals will have all right-handers batting in the bottom half of the ninth inning,
- 2:19:03so we might get Kidrow in.
- 2:19:05We'll have Rojas Patek and Martinez.
- 2:19:09Our fans look at that baseball, and he'll throw it out.
- 2:19:14Let's go.
- 2:19:15We'll get a new baseball.
- 2:19:19There's Augs.
- 2:19:24Mike Goer with his left-hander.
- 2:19:32One on a mix.
- 2:19:34Two strikes on Muckston.
- 2:19:35Sir Muckston hits the ball out.
- 2:19:40McRae deep in right field.
- 2:19:45Dower deep in center.
- 2:19:49Here's the two-strike pitch.
- 2:19:51Breaking ball is low.
- 2:19:52One ball, two strikes.
- 2:19:53Martinez thought it was a strike.
- 2:20:01A ball and two strikes on Muckston.
- 2:20:04Now Lachell goes on the backside of Mound, goes to the mound.
- 2:20:09He's going to back up top looking in for a shot.
- 2:20:15He winds, and here's the one-two pitch.
- 2:20:18Wong on fouls straight back and out of play.
- 2:20:20The count remains, a ball and two strikes.
- 2:20:24Well, nobody's gone home yet.
- 2:20:27All these seats are still full.
- 2:20:31We're in the bottom half of the eighth inning, two outs and nobody on.
- 2:20:35And the scoreboard is set.
- 2:20:37The Yankees have six runs on ten hits, they've made an error.
- 2:20:40The Royals also have six runs on ten hits, they've made an error.
- 2:20:50Here's the one-two to Muckston.
- 2:20:53Wong on and this tournament goes down swinging on a good trigger.
- 2:20:57No runs, no hits, no errors, and nobody left on base.
- 2:20:59It's late eight, and at the end of eight the score is tied.
- 2:21:02The Yankees six, the Kansas City Royals six.
- 2:21:06Well, Jake Pedro will come on and take for the Yankees on the top of the ninth.
- 2:21:11So Jackson's record is complete along with Sigarroa.
- 2:21:14Sigarroa went seven, gave up four runs as he was charged with Cowan's run on eight bases.
- 2:21:23Sigarroa struck out three and didn't walk anybody.
- 2:21:27Jackson picked one of these, gave up two runs on two bases.
- 2:21:35He didn't walk anybody, and he struck out one.
- 2:21:39Now it's up to Dick Kidrow and Mark Lichell.
- 2:21:46This has been a key softball game.
- 2:21:48The Royals took a two-nothing lead in the top of the first on the home run by John Napier.
- 2:21:53Yankee came back in the bottom of the first with two to tie it.
- 2:21:56The Royals scored one to go ahead in the top of the second.
- 2:22:00They want to add three-two.
- 2:22:01Yankee came right back with two in the bottom half of the third to go ahead 4-3.
- 2:22:06Then the Yankees got a couple of insurance runs in the sixth to make it 6-3.
- 2:22:12But the Royals in the eighth inning used a single by Cowan, a bench single by Wolford,
- 2:22:17and a three-run home run by George Brett to tie the ball game up.
- 2:22:22So we're going into the ninth inning now.
- 2:22:27And we've got a six-six tie.
- 2:22:30It's going to be Rojas, Poptek, and Marcinis,
- 2:22:33who are for the Kansas City Royals against Dick Kidrow.
- 2:22:50Kidrow picked Sunday night in Kansas City, went two and two-thirds innings,
- 2:22:54gave up three runs on three hits.
- 2:22:57He also picked Wednesday afternoon, three and two-thirds innings.
- 2:23:01Rojas hits a one-hopper to Stanley.
- 2:23:03He's right there at shortstop.
- 2:23:04Staten throws on the first to get Rojas, and there's one away.
- 2:23:12So Kidrow is making his third relief appearance in the championship series.
- 2:23:16Here's Freddie Poptek.
- 2:23:19Poptek has stuck out, crawled out, and got an infield hit.
- 2:23:22He's hit it all five games.
- 2:23:24He's one for three, and a seven for 17 in the series.
- 2:23:30Neto is up a third base.
- 2:23:32He guards the line a bit.
- 2:23:34Outfield playing Poptek straight away.
- 2:23:36And the first pitch is low.
- 2:23:40Yankees in the bottom of this inning will have Kamblis, Alomar,
- 2:23:44and Greg Neto's to against Mark Littell.
- 2:23:50That ball has just got the outside corner.
- 2:23:54One ball, one strike on Poptek.
- 2:24:03Kidrow looks for a sign.
- 2:24:05Now he's ready, and a one-one pitch.
- 2:24:08Poptek fouls straight back and off the master much of the ball and two strikes.
- 2:24:33Now Kidrow is taking a lot of time out on the mound.
- 2:24:36Now he gets the sign.
- 2:24:39Here's the one-two pitch to Poptek.
- 2:24:43Chopped foul outside a third.
- 2:24:45He broke his back, so he'll need the new lumber.
- 2:24:48Kidrow jammed it with a fastball.
- 2:24:50The tail down and in.
- 2:24:51Poptek trying to get out front, got hit on the first and pulled the ball foul and broke his back.
- 2:25:00Poptek has a new back.
- 2:25:02He's back in.
- 2:25:05Kidrow getting a new sign.
- 2:25:06It takes so long that Poptek calls time and backs off.
- 2:25:10One out, nobody on.
- 2:25:11Nice inning scores tied.
- 2:25:12Yankee picks the Kansas City Royals.
- 2:25:16They count a ball and two strikes on for that Poptek.
- 2:25:22And the pitch.
- 2:25:25Swung on, fouled back again.
- 2:25:27That's got Munchen again on the mat, but on his shoulder.
- 2:25:31And that hurts.
- 2:25:32Munchen hit on, oh, got him in the cheek.
- 2:25:35In the neck.
- 2:25:36Mired not quickly.
- 2:25:42And here comes Dean Monahan, the Yankee trainer.
- 2:25:45He's hustling out.
- 2:25:46That's the worst place a catcher can get hit.
- 2:25:50Might have got him on the best ball, on the sit-up tonight.
- 2:25:55Mired not there along with Dean Monahan.
- 2:25:58Dick Kidrow.
- 2:26:01Kamlitz in there along with Nettles.
- 2:26:04And Poptek bending down.
- 2:26:05They're all looking at Munchen.
- 2:26:09And Thurman.
- 2:26:10Now gets up off his knee.
- 2:26:11Gets up off his knee.
- 2:26:27Oh, Thurman gets there.
- 2:26:31They count a ball and two strikes on Poptek.
- 2:26:33With one out, nobody on.
- 2:26:34Nice ending Yankee 6 Royals 6.
- 2:26:43Down to the wire.
- 2:26:48Kidrow now cleaning the dirt out of his pipe.
- 2:26:50He goes back up top of the mound.
- 2:26:59Now the big right hander looks for a sign.
- 2:27:04It's a big sign.
- 2:27:06Now the 1-2 picks the project.
- 2:27:09Low, two balls, two strikes.
- 2:27:13Alexander's up in the Yankee bullpen along with Sparky Lyle.
- 2:27:18Alexander has not gotten into the ball game.
- 2:27:20A ball game, nor has Kenny Olson.
- 2:27:23Here's the 2-2 stretch now.
- 2:27:26Long on, hit on the ground and shortstop.
- 2:27:28Stanley takes the ground.
- 2:27:29He's got to hurry.
- 2:27:30In time and first place by half a step.
- 2:27:32Two out.
- 2:27:39And the batter is the catcher, Buck Martinez.
- 2:27:49In fact, Alexander and Guidry and Olson, the only pitch is not used by the Yankees.
- 2:27:55Guidry didn't get into a ball game as a defense on it.
- 2:28:00As Buck Martinez steps in.
- 2:28:01Martinez is 2 for 3.
- 2:28:04And here's the first pitch to him.
- 2:28:07Long on, line, big hit, left center field.
- 2:28:09Over quickly, white rivers.
- 2:28:11He'll get it in quickly.
- 2:28:12Martinez with not much speed.
- 2:28:13He'll have to hold it first base.
- 2:28:15So Martinez is 3 for 4.
- 2:28:17He's on it first base with two outs.
- 2:28:19And that'll bring on Al Cowans at center field.
- 2:28:27Cowans is 1 for 4.
- 2:28:32He's grounded the Randolph twice the second day.
- 2:28:34He bounced into a double play.
- 2:28:36And he's single to left field.
- 2:28:38He started a double in the eighth inning with a single to left.
- 2:28:40That got rid of Bigger Oars.
- 2:28:42Brought on Jackson.
- 2:28:44Gave up the pitch single to Jim Wolford.
- 2:28:46And the home run to Brett.
- 2:28:48This one's tied 6-6.
- 2:28:51Here's the pitch to Cowans.
- 2:28:53Low a ball.
- 2:29:06Now that's set again by Kid Rowe.
- 2:29:08He checks Martinez at first.
- 2:29:09The one old pitch.
- 2:29:11Low again.
- 2:29:12Two balls, no touch.
- 2:29:14Jim Wolford.
- 2:29:25The first base coach says something to Martinez at first.
- 2:29:32Martinez does not take a big lead.
- 2:29:36And Kid Rowe backs off.
- 2:29:38Martinez goes back to first.
- 2:29:40And Cowans backs out of the box.
- 2:29:43Kid Rowe wants another sign from Mutch.
- 2:29:46They move netto just off the third base line.
- 2:29:48Maybe a fifth.
- 2:29:52And Kid Rowe's fifth.
- 2:29:54A two-old fifth.
- 2:29:55And side ball.
- 2:29:56Three.
- 2:29:57Three balls, no touch.
- 2:29:59Now Yankee.
- 2:30:00And Kid Rowe in danger of getting that tying run down to second base.
- 2:30:10Now Kid Rowe's ready.
- 2:30:12And the three-old to Cowans.
- 2:30:1412 strikes on the inside corner.
- 2:30:16It's three and one.
- 2:30:27Now Kid Rowe is ready.
- 2:30:30And the three-one pitch.
- 2:30:32Low ball for Cowans' walk.
- 2:30:36And the tying little go-ahead run now is down to second.
- 2:30:39And Martinez now, remember, does not have that much speed.
- 2:30:50And Erzog just when he's talking to his third base coach, Chuck Inler,
- 2:30:53and he's telling Erzog, he's going to go out and tell Martinez to get a bigger lead.
- 2:30:57Mutch does not run that well.
- 2:30:59And if he takes that short lead, in case the Wolfers get the base hit,
- 2:31:04The Wolfers really doesn't sing the ball that far.
- 2:31:08He wants Martinez with a good lead to catch the score.
- 2:31:12Yankee off-field and short enough for Wolfers.
- 2:31:14Royals have runners at first and second.
- 2:31:16Martinez down at second.
- 2:31:18Cowans on at first.
- 2:31:19They're two outs.
- 2:31:20And the batter is Jim Wolfers.
- 2:31:22And we single the center as a pincer in the eighth inning.
- 2:31:25Right-handed batter.
- 2:31:27Pitch choice.
- 2:31:29Low of all.
- 2:31:31And on deck is George Brecht.
- 2:31:35He likes to get away from the air without allowing Brett Mayberry in here the ninth inning.
- 2:31:41Here's the 1-0 now to Wolfers.
- 2:31:43Pop foul out of play, right side.
- 2:31:46That's the ball in the shot.
- 2:32:01River's playing a shallow center field and Gamble with an extra arm playing a shallow right field.
- 2:32:07As Hidro sets the test to run.
- 2:32:09Here's the 1-1 pitch.
- 2:32:11Inside.
- 2:32:12Two balls in the shot.
- 2:32:17Yankee six.
- 2:32:18Royals six playing the ninth inning.
- 2:32:19Royals have to go ahead and run down at second base with two outs.
- 2:32:25That's Martinez down at second.
- 2:32:26Cowans on at first.
- 2:32:28Here's the 2-1 pitch.
- 2:32:30On top of the hopper.
- 2:32:31Nettles in front.
- 2:32:32Thumbs up.
- 2:32:33Throws the second.
- 2:32:34They get the 4-3 down and there the size of the time.
- 2:32:37Brett Nettles, king of grass they charge in front of Stanley.
- 2:32:40Clipped that ball to second base just in time to get a sliding outcoward.
- 2:32:44Loran's on at base.
- 2:32:46There's two men left on base.
- 2:32:48Yankees up.
- 2:32:49Bottom of the ninth.
- 2:32:50Force tie.
- 2:32:51Yankee six.
- 2:32:52Royals six.
- 2:32:53The ball game and he'll pitch
- 2:33:09The gambler and Alomar is on
- 2:33:13deck and then Greg Nettle
- 2:33:16Campbell's has had some kind of
- 2:33:18championship series he's been
- 2:33:20playing for a long time he has
- 2:33:23been basic he's given in seven

- 2:33:34double a triple in a home run
- 2:33:37and he's batting five under he's
- 2:33:40then against the right hander
- 2:33:41Mark Luttrell here in the bottom
- 2:33:42of the batting and he's got a
- 2:33:50lot Hendricks has a bat walking
- 2:33:52around the Yankee dugout so he'll
- 2:33:54probably be sending the bat for
- 2:33:55Sandy Alomar as we wait for Al
- 2:34:04McCrae to give the ground to
- 2:34:06right field and Mark Luttrell
- 2:34:26takes advantage of that little

- 2:34:52throwing bottles down on the
- 2:34:53field or throwing anything on
- 2:34:54The field.
- 2:34:56I was just admiring the series
- 2:34:57game with someone getting hurt
- 2:35:08on the umpires are going to get
- 2:35:09together and I'm sure that we're
- 2:35:10going to get an announcement
- 2:35:12from Bob Keppert.

- 2:35:22Detroit.
- 2:35:23He was with the Cardinals and to
- 2:35:27be taken out by the committee
- 2:35:31people throwing debris all over
- 2:35:33The place and across the billy

- 2:36:46keeping his field in good shape
- 2:36:48play football here.

- 2:36:55with this field still is in very
- 2:36:57good shape.
- 2:37:00And it's a tribute to Jimmy
- 2:37:01Esposito and his ground.
- 2:37:04Well that's funny.
- 2:37:05Now Campbell starts up with
- 2:37:07going to run with a sacrifice
- 2:37:08line the first.
- 2:37:09Go with another one about the
- 2:37:11third double the right center
- 2:37:12but was left handed in the
- 2:37:13fifth single is better than the
- 2:37:16sixth goal a second base and
- 2:37:19scored when Brett threw wilder
- 2:37:21in that big city.
- 2:37:23Campbell's is that some kind of

- 2:38:41And the ball game I think is over.
- 2:38:47Chris Campbell is stepping on the first pitch for Mark Lattell.
- 2:38:51Getting it over the wall at the 3.53 mark.
- 2:38:54Hal McCleary gave it a good shot.
