- 0:00The gathering of the Motorsports industry that come, you know,
- 0:05comes here and the time, the quality time that you have with
- 0:08everyone from two wheels to planes, boats, cars, all types
- 0:12of car racing is incredible storytelling.
- 0:15The camaraderie you know, the respect everyone shows this
- 0:18event by attending and being here and and some just great
- 0:21hang time together is is something I remember from two
- 0:25other trips I've made. But to now be here as an
- 0:28inductee makes it all the more special.
- 0:30Hey Jimmy, congratulations back December, you got to go in with
- 0:35a very good friend of yours, Chad Kanaus, into the NASCAR
- 0:38Hall of Fame tonight. You're going to get to go in
- 0:40with a guy, you get to spend a couple of years with an IndyCar
- 0:43with Scott Dixon. So in a lot of ways, how cool is
- 0:46that? And not only how deserving you
- 0:48are of getting in, but just describe how deserving Scott
- 0:51Dixon is, because he's still he's still pretty fast.
- 0:55He's very fast. It's.
- 0:57It just makes it more special. I mean, this honor is
- 1:00significant on its own. And then to be going in with
- 1:03someone that I've had so much respect for over the years and
- 1:07certainly in the last four or five years, someone that has
- 1:09truly become a very close friend.
- 1:12We live maybe 45 minutes apart now in in England and I've spent
- 1:16a fair amount of time with him over the offseason and you know
- 1:20just he his family. The way our families have
- 1:23combined and in the respect and friendship that we have, it's
- 1:27just very, very special. Dario is also here.
- 1:30Dario's going to introduce him and certainly know the history I
- 1:33have with Dario and his family, So it's great.
- 1:36And then Rick Johnson is here. He's been my lifelong mentor,
- 1:40friend, teammate and just the the Gathering is is just quite
- 1:45special. You're You were a shoo in to get
- 1:47in and was a NASCAR driver alone with 7 championships, but how
- 1:51important was it for you to experience other forms of racing
- 1:55to get an appreciation for everybody else that's going in?
- 1:59Yeah, I mean I certainly have my journey in Motorsports and feel
- 2:03very fortunate to have raced so much and you know this is my
- 2:06third time at this event in the storytelling that takes place
- 2:10really helps me understand and and respect different areas of
- 2:16the country, different forms of motorsport and just the common
- 2:19love that we all have for this industry.
- 2:21And the storytelling is absolutely priceless and and
- 2:25multi dimensional. For me, I just went through this
- 2:27great honor as you pointed out in the NASCAR Hall of Fame.
- 2:30But it's certainly just in that NASCAR lane and to hear the the
- 2:34many stories here with all the inductees, it's it's just
- 2:39incredible. I got to ask you, you know,
- 2:42coming up you're going to get back behind the wheel, pick up
- 2:44car, how excited are you just with how fast the Toyotas have
- 2:47been so far? Yes, super excited.
- 2:49You know, Texas has been a great track for me over the years.
- 2:53You know our our team has made substantial steps forward and we
- 2:57still have a long way to go, but we've had a very exciting start
- 3:00to the 24th season and running I guess 9 in total this year gives
- 3:06me many more reps and a lot of those nine events will be on
- 3:10mile and a half tracks. And so I would assume and hope
- 3:13that towards the end of you know my my events and all the mile
- 3:18and a half set I'll run, I'll be much more competitive.
- 3:21Understand this car, I have very limited experience in this next
- 3:25Gen. car and certainly very little experience in a Toyota.
- 3:29So I just, I just feel like Texas is going to really be the
- 3:31start of the stretch that I I have high expectations for
- 3:36myself. Any specific expectations finish
- 3:39wise? I know, I know what the dream
- 3:43is. The dream is to go back to
- 3:44Victory land and get my 84th win.
- 3:47I don't have a good sense of real expectations at this point.
- 3:50Daytona felt great. You know, our cars are right in
- 3:53the mix, but I don't have a good sense for the other style of
- 3:57trucks yet. You know, you've had the unique
- 3:59opportunity to go through this Hall of Fame process not once,
- 4:02but twice in the last, you know, three months.
- 4:04Just what's been to some of your favorite moments thus far?
- 4:07Obviously tonight's going to be a big moment as well, just going
- 4:10through this whole process, You know, twice.
- 4:13It's really reflecting back throughout my career I was so
- 4:16focused on the next race, the next season and and also I think
- 4:21many racers perform better by not reflecting on on the good or
- 4:24bad That's really happened. It's just ice forward and
- 4:26continue to March along and since I've you know stopped full
- 4:31time racing, certainly stopped NASCAR full time racing and then
- 4:34has slowed down in 23 some, It's allowing me to reflect and I'm
- 4:39really enjoying these moments. I'm going to the NASCAR hall
- 4:43was. I knew it was going to be
- 4:44special, but I didn't realize the magnitude of how special it
- 4:47would be. And that has set me up very well
- 4:49for this experience and I've been very excited for this week
- 4:52and certainly savoring all these moments.
- 4:55Yeah. And final questions is obviously
- 4:57being inducted alongside Scott Dixon as well.
- 4:59Bruce mentioned a little bit about it, just having raced with
- 5:02him for a short amount of time, just what were some of your
- 5:04biggest takeaways? This was working with him and
- 5:06just seeing him in his element. His dedication for the the sport
- 5:12is is quite impressive. Obviously you know his skills,
- 5:16but the thing that stands out to me the most is that he still
- 5:19loves it. I mean he is still when he
- 5:22giggles and talks about racing, I can, I feel like I see a
- 5:26teenage version of Scott Dixon sitting there and he still has
- 5:30that gleam in his eye that a teenager does for the sport.
- 5:34So that's that's probably the thing that stands out to me
- 5:36most. And you know the other things I
- 5:38mentioned are extremely impressive.
- 5:40He's a six time champion, the skill, the passion, all that
- 5:43stuff, but he he loves driving race cars.
- 5:46Yeah, Jimmy, I'm being inducted into this Hall of Fame.
- 5:48Considering your history and motorcycles off road, having
- 5:52done IndyCar, just is it any sort of different kind of
- 5:56feeling going into and a whole thing that kind of recognizes
- 6:00all those disciplines? Yeah, I I do believe so.
- 6:05I know that from a speech standpoint, you know, it gives
- 6:08me the flexibility to talk more about the various things that
- 6:12I've raised and I think the room has a greater understanding and
- 6:15appreciation of the journey and and racing All in all the
- 6:20different series. There's one element, I'm not
- 6:22sure if you guys have heard about this hydroplane boat in
- 6:25the Muncie family, but one of the many forms of racing that I
- 6:30watched when I was a kid was the Thunderbolts.
- 6:33I think the APBA Thunderbolt series, what it was at least
- 6:37called years ago. But there was a very successful
- 6:40driver named Bill Muncie who my family was close with and Bill
- 6:44was tragically killed when I was quite young.
- 6:47But the team continued on. The Muncie family continued on
- 6:51Bill's son Ed Muncie. My dad used to take Ed and
- 6:55myself racing motocross all around California and Arizona,
- 6:58Nevada. So we had this great connection
- 7:00with the Muncie's. But the inbound driver was a
- 7:03driver named Chip Henhauer, and Chip took over the Atlas Van
- 7:07Lines boat while the family still still was racing.
- 7:11And as a kid we would always go to the San Diego event that
- 7:17would take place. Stand in the pits, you know,
- 7:20enjoy, have have a great time. But one of the one of the years
- 7:25we're on the opposite side of the racetrack when Bill was
- 7:27still alive and the boat broke and it coasted to a stop.
- 7:30And they have a picture of my dad setting me up onto the deck
- 7:34of this boat and as it broke down right in front of us.
- 7:39And so that the picture circulated around probably in
- 7:412019-2020 and behind the scenes there's been this push to let me
- 7:46drive the boat to this, all these connections that exist.
- 7:50And last night when I arrived for the opening ceremonies,
- 7:55surprised to see the Muncie family there, I was surprised to
- 7:57see the boat on display and they called me on stage and the
- 8:02opportunity to drive the boat is is here.
- 8:04It's now they they they invited me to come drive the boat, the
- 8:08famed boat that the Bill once raced and obviously an
- 8:12opportunity of a lifetime. So again, to kind of speak to
- 8:14the many different disciplines in the room and the freedom I
- 8:17have and the experience I am having, this is beyond my
- 8:21wildest dreams this weekend or this week.
- 8:24Pardon me for. Interrupting Bob.
- 8:26But if any of our media friends are interested in receiving that
- 8:29picture for story, just send send a e-mail to Amanda or Amy
- 8:34or or myself and we'll hook you up.
- 8:36You could just take, you could just taking it out on Lake
- 8:39Lloyd. I don't think it's big enough
- 8:42for this boat and the speed that it runs, it's like a 200 mile an
- 8:44hour boat. OK.
- 8:46And then I wanted to ask, I don't know how many races last
- 8:49year you you came just to observe you know and sit on top
- 8:52of a box. But I'm curious you know you did
- 8:55that on, you did that on Sunday. So I'm curious what you saw,
- 9:00what what you saw that you felt was different this year from
- 9:03watching the team just with your owner had on at a race versus
- 9:07last year? Yeah, last year and when I left
- 9:11for Le Mans, yeah, it was really a short period of time that I
- 9:16was at the track and I went to probably three or four races and
- 9:20sat on the box and then our tragedy happened and I didn't
- 9:24tend to attend any more races or driving in anymore in 23.
- 9:29So it's I don't have a fair apples to apples comparison as
- 9:32the team was evolving but you know certainly from you know
- 9:36March of last year to March of this year to see the growth of
- 9:40our team, it's quite impressive. You know I felt like at the
- 9:44start of the race in Phoenix we had a car capable of winning the
- 9:47race and and Eric was up there battling hard for the for the
- 9:50lead and we still have some things to iron out.
- 9:53We're we're a young team in a lot of ways and the consistency
- 9:59that the big organizations have with speed in their cars with
- 10:03the performance on pit lane. You know there's just a lot of
- 10:05layers here that that we still have to mature in and you know
- 10:10the important things to have speed and and we had it all
- 10:12weekend long and our relationship with Toyota has
- 10:15been you know company changing to say the least and to put it
- 10:20loudly and we're we're very excited to get more reps.
- 10:24I think our first time to a lot of these tracks it's going to be
- 10:27such a learning curve for us with our new tools and new
- 10:30equipment. But I would expect in the
- 10:32second-half of the season as we return to these tracks the
- 10:34second time we should have more natural speed in the cars.
- 10:39Our brand new over the wall department will have more reps
- 10:42and you know we'll be able to to really lock in those consistent
- 10:46pillars that we need to race for wins, make the playoffs, advance
- 10:50rounds in the playoffs. Jimmy, with you getting another
- 10:54Hall of Fame. It reminds me of something that
- 10:56I remember hearing Jeff Gordon talking about and getting into a
- 10:59Hall of Fame at what he felt like was an early age.
- 11:01He just felt like it kind of weird for him and and I'm
- 11:04curious with you being under 50 to being in a Hall of Fame's and
- 11:08and getting these introductions, what is that like?
- 11:11Because in one sense you're in that sense, you're still a young
- 11:14guy and and and quite frankly you're probably one of the
- 11:17youngest guys in the room now. Yeah, I think it's twofold.
- 11:21I mean, I I do feel like younger drivers help draw a bit more
- 11:27attention. Help put more eyeballs on the
- 11:31particular ceremony that's that's taking place.
- 11:36So I think that's helpful. But I do feel like if it was 20
- 11:41years from now and my opportunity to reflect back on
- 11:44it, it it it would certainly be. And this isn't in in any way not
- 11:52a respectful way to to phrase it, but it would be more
- 11:54meaningful. It means the world right now.
- 11:57I'm absolutely loving this experience but I think the
- 12:00further you are away from holding a steering wheel that
- 12:03just deeper reflection that you have a greater appreciation one
- 12:06will have for their, you know their time behind the wheel.
- 12:09And I'm still holding a wheel, Scott Dixon still is holding a
- 12:13wheel. So we're we're at the Max of of
- 12:16what we can experience in this moment.
- 12:19But I do think 20 years from now in the moment would would have a
- 12:21bit more weight to it. And that being said, being a
- 12:25young guy in the room in this sense, in another sense in the
- 12:28racing world, you're an older guy at at this age, which is
- 12:32obviously the the, the irony of it all.
- 12:34How will you look at what you do this year and determining how
- 12:40much more you'll you'll race or is it is it part of that like
- 12:44you referenced I think to Bob's question about you know you
- 12:47getting to run gets extra reps for some of the people at your
- 12:50organization as you build it that hey that and maybe it's
- 12:54more important for you to run even longer to kind of run that
- 12:57car and get other people reps How, how does this year
- 13:00determine whether we're going to see Jimmie Johnson and Cub
- 13:02beyond this season? Yeah, it how how you know
- 13:07there's a few factors that go into it. 1 My performance.
- 13:09You know, I want to make sure that I'm I'm in the mix.
- 13:13Not that I have to win races. I'd love to of course but I want
- 13:16to make sure I'm in the mix and and and the time away, the time
- 13:22it takes to do this that it's it's really worth it from that
- 13:25standpoint. The next piece is partners and
- 13:28sponsorship obviously are manufacturing Toyota and if it
- 13:31makes sense for them, if it's helping the program.
- 13:34So there's probably three or four different lanes that need
- 13:36to make sense. This year is a big year for us.
- 13:39I mean last year I intended to run five to three.
- 13:42I'm doing 9. I'm I'm personally open to
- 13:46probably a 15 race schedule but that would include sports car
- 13:49and vintage classic car racing plus NASCAR you know all of that
- 13:53lumped into one. And so in in my mind I'm kind of
- 13:56looking for that 15 race schedule, marquee events, unique
- 14:00events. I'd love to diversify and and be
- 14:02back in sports cars in Le Mans or the Rolex 24.
- 14:06I will drive some extreme E races this year and I'm really
- 14:09excited for that experience. So it's still fluid at this
- 14:13point, but you know, I'm, I'm hopeful to have a great year
- 14:17behind the wheel and I can set up another fun year in 25.
- 14:21What's it? What is about the extreme E that
- 14:23that enthuses you? I think there's a lot of
- 14:28factors. Racing internationally is
- 14:30something that I've had limited experience to but love the focus
- 14:36for sustainability and gender equality in extreme E is is is
- 14:42really special for me, especially being a father of two
- 14:45daughters and to see my girls excitement to meet Grey
- 14:48Ledbetter, our our female driver and to come to the races and
- 14:50watch her run. So there's, you know, there's
- 14:53there's a few elements that play into it and I I can't skip over
- 14:58the fact that I grew up on the dirt and I have not been back on
- 15:01the dirt really since probably 97.
- 15:05So it's it's been a minute and then to really get back into a
- 15:08an off road vehicle and get off the ground is going to be fun.
- 15:11Thank you. Thank you.
- 15:14All right, Adam, I'll turn it. Back over to you.
- 15:18Thank you. Just some notes before Amanda
- 15:20wraps it up by Dustin. Spot on.
- 15:22Jimmy and Scott are among our among our youngest 4 wheel
- 15:25inductees. Motorcycle guys, they hang it up
- 15:27a little bit sooner, but Scott Scott's making history just to
- 15:31just to have something to the jab about a little bit.
- 15:34He's our first four wheel inductee born in the 80s.
- 15:36He was born in 1980, but we don't have many born in 1975
- 15:39either. So you guys are thank you for
- 15:42carrying the Motorsports Hall of Fame, America Flag and
- 15:44Contemporary Competition and congratulations.
- 15:47Thank you. Appreciate it.
