Got music from Josh Clevenstein, the latest from Oobleck, also the pine boys, Kat McKenzie, the latest from Blood, Blood Blood. And we'll also check in with our friends Jake and Mike in the Bad Music Club for bands you should know and Brendan for I miss beer. So without further ado, let's get started.

Speaker B: Andy Scullin is such a good dude. The kind of guy that it's easy to talk to. He's got some cool stuff he'd like to share with you.
• 0:40
  Speaker A: Yeah, you.
• 0:41
Speaker B: It's the weekend. You know what you should do?
• 0:43
Speaker C: It's the weekend. Spotlight the weekend. Alright.
• 0:50
Speaker A: Up first we have Josh Clevenstein. This Friday, January 10th, he will be playing at Sully's west in Glens Falls from 8 to 11. And Sully's west is at 49 Broad street in Glens Falls. And although I haven't had Josh on the show yet, I did reach out to him and ask permission to play one of his songs and we chatted a little bit. So hopefully going to get him on a Future episode of Unsigned 518 proper. But in the meantime, we're going to play a song from Josh Clevenstein that actually had the honor of being the number eight song on WEXT's top 50 local artists. This is tradition bearers and it's Josh Clevenstein right here on Unsigned 518's Weekend Spotlight.

Speaker D: Dann Bergen showed us how to hear the mountains a whisper John Kirk would serenade us with his bow and his string Bill Smith would capture us with the songs around the fire and Christian songs Hear the adirondack City driving 458St. Regis down towards Palsmouth the cold winds of a March day seem to distance the coming spring Been so long since I've seen it but his voice will soon come calling the high peaks in the distance Call the mountains for the city cause Dan Bergam showed us how to hear the mountains a whisper John Kirk would serenade us with his bow and his strings Bridget Bo capture us with darling Rosie by the fire and Christian son near the Adirondack sea Mountaineer joins me in harmony as I sing down 73 Cold River Waltz takes me to another town to an old friend's fishing camp where he taught me how to cross pick to find my voice Tell my story now finally while I sing my cause Dan Bergen showed us how to hear the mountains Whisper John Kirk would serenade us with his bow and his strings Roy, Ben and Peggy join their voices in the choir And Chris shock songs knew the Adirondacks sing boy from a big porch no his greater calling way to listen to his uncle his father selling lies I pray I do my duty to carry on tradition to sing your songs, tell your stories and add a chapter or two of mine. Speaker A: That was Josh Clevenstein with Tradition bearers here on Unsigned 518's Weekend Spotlight. And coming up next, we have Oobleck with the Sugar Hold. They're gonna be at Ophelia's Also on Friday, January 10th. That show starts at 8pm Gonna be a great night. It's the first time the two bands have played together. Both high energy bands, both really great people. So I think you'll have a good time, get out to Ophelias and also Ophelias. Now, as you probably know, Sliding Dirty is is doing the food at Ophelia. So. So it's a perfect chance tomorrow night, Friday the 10th to get out there and experience some of that food, support local music and go check out Oobleck and the Sugar Hold. And from what I hear, the show is a bit of a single release party for Oobleck. Oobleck just put out their single Purse Candy on the third of this month. And I actually just had oobleck on unsigned 518 as I'm recording this on the 8th. I had them on the show this, this past Sunday. So in a couple of weeks we'll have oobleck on unsigned 518 proper. Really, really dug them, really liked hanging out with them. And Calvin, my dog and Sam of Oobleck really made a fairly instant connection, almost to the point of jealousy. I was like, holy shit. Like my dog likes like Sam more than he likes me. But they, they really had a connection. And that is why if you go wherever you're listening, if you look at the COVID of this Episode it is Calvin laying on the floor with Oobleck on the, on the couch. And Calvin's chewing on a ball because he was showing off. He literally left the room, got a ball, came back in with a Look what I got, look what I got. But anyway, Calvin, Calvin says hi, Sam.
• 9:00
  Speaker D: He.
• 9:00
Speaker A: He enjoyed hanging out with you as well. But right now let's hear Purse Candy, which is the single that just on the third. And you can go check it out live tomorrow night, Friday the 10th, when Oobleck plays with the Sugar hold at Ophelia's. Right now, Purse Candy's weekend spotlight.

Speaker A: Right, that was Oobleck with Purse Candy. And make sure you catch them Friday, January 10th, that's tomorrow night at Ophelia's playing with my good friends, the Sugar Hole. It's going to be a killer show. So get out there and check that out. And right now what we're gonna do is check in with my friend Brendan, also sometimes known as AB the Autocrat. He does a show called I Miss Beer where he reviews non alcoholic beers. And we're gonna check in and see what he's got for us this week. Brendan.
• 15:51
  Speaker D: Okay.
• 15:54
Speaker G: My name is Brendan and I miss beer. And on this episode of I Miss Beer, we're gonna be trying, trying Estrella Calicia Lager. Okay. Cheers to the end of the week. Sniff it, sip it, score it, Slam that it does not smell good. I am not lying. That smells like feet and like throw up feet. Anybody has this beer and says it smells pleasant, you are lying. Let's give it a sip. It doesn't taste like it smells, that's for sure. I cannot believe how this smells. Holy. I mean the smell went away a little bit, but. But the mouth feel is interesting. Almost has, like, a creaminess to it. It smells like minestrone soup straight up, but it does not taste like soup. Kind of has, like, a hint of caramel. It's kind of sweet, too. All right, final verdict. I'm gonna go six, seven on this. Let's slam it.
• 16:41
Speaker A: Not a fan of slamming this one. And for full effect, make sure you follow I miss Beer on Instagram. And you can go check out the video because you can. You can definitely tell in that one that that Brendan was not enj enjoying slamming that beer. So, you know, go check out I Miss Beer on Instagram. He puts out a lot of content. It's great stuff. And of course, he's at the Autocrat. Everybody knows. At the Autocrat speeds. You're listening to them right now. Up next, we have the Pine boys at the 11 on the 11th. That is Saturday, January 11th, at the 11 at Lark hall from 6 to 8pm My friends the Pine Boys will be playing. And many of you know that I did a review of the Pine Boys latest album. I think it was the very first review I did for the Metroland. It might be, yeah. But anyway, I really like the Dudes. I really like the music. And I think you should go check out the Pine Boys. That's this Saturday, the 11th. At the 11th. And right now, we're gonna hear a song from the Pine Boys off the album that I did a review for. This is Squiddly Doop Dop and it's here on Unsigned 518 Weekend Spotlight. Hey, what's the dealio?

Speaker A: That's the Pine Boys with Squiddly doop doop right here on Unsight518's Weekend Spotlight. And go catch the Pine Boys live this Saturday, the 11th at the 11th at Larcal. So a couple of months ago, I had the opportunity to have a very bit part in a horror movie made by local filmmaker Frank Polangi. I believe it's called American Psychopath. And it's going to be out sometime this spring from what I'm seeing on social media. But it was a really cool experience. I've never really done any acting, certainly nothing on film. I had no idea what to expect. And my character was, was a bit of an asshole. And that's like kind of a, a, an understatement. My, my character was like a dick. And it was actually like, you know, you always hear actors saying like, oh, it's really fun to play the bad guy. And I'm like, you know, even for that, like, you know, eight second role that I'm gonna have in this, this movie, it was very fun to just be like kind of a little bit of a dank. And I, I enjoyed it. But anyway, Frank also not only is a musician himself, but, you know, he is a filmmaker, but he also directs music videos and, and one of the other albums that I did a review for in The Metroland, the metroland.com you can check all those out, was for Kat McKenzie. And Frank had mix mastered and produced the song that we're about to hear. But not only that, he directed the video to Cocoon, which we're about to hear. And the video is already out. It came out on the 3rd of this month, so it's already out in the, in the universe. So you can go check out cocoon by Kat McKenzie, but also go check out Frank's other work. I just watched Souls of the Damned, which was his last movie that, that came out. And these, it's on Tubi. You can go watch, watch it for free. It's, it's, it's really cool. And you know, pretty soon you'll be able to see me playing, playing an asshole in Frank's next movie. So go check that out. Go check out the video for Cocoon. Go listen to Cat MacKenzie's music. And right now, now let's listen to Cocoon from Cat MacKenzie here on unsigned 518's Weekend Spotlight.
• 23:31
Speaker I: I don't plan on leaving anytime soon. You don't need to love me I'm working all out driving myself. You don't need to care about me. I'm working on caring about myself. I've been sluggish in a couches embrace. Scared of anyone in lest I meet my face. And I don't believe in any time soon.
• 24:19
Speaker E: I conclude I kind of hate myself. My fears are wild demons. And when I let them out.
• 24:44
Speaker I: Oh baby it's wrong.
• 24:49
Speaker E: I kind of hate myself. The way I stay closed down.
• 24:59
  Speaker A: When.
• 24:59
Speaker E: I wanna give you my sweet love.
• 25:09
Speaker I: I've been slumbering in a pill of thought. I've been stagnant asking what's it all for? And I don't plan on leaving anytime soon. You don't need to love me. I'm working on loving myself. You don't need to care about me. I'm working on caring about by myself. I've been resting so my spirit won't break. While watch news only so much I can take. And I don't plan on leaving anytime soon. I'm cocooned.
• 26:17
Speaker E: I kind of hate myself. My fears are wild demons. And when I let them out.
• 26:32
Speaker I: Oh baby it's wrong.
• 26:36
Speaker E: I kind of hit my myself. The way I stay close down.
• 26:46
  Speaker I: When.
• 26:47
Speaker E: I want to give you my sweet love. Collect the petals and I'll keep them safe. So I just lay your heart. I didn't need to break such a battle field. I think I stay right here. Keep working on myself.
• 27:36
Speaker A: That was Cap McKenzie with Cocoon. Go check out the video directed by Frank Polanche, which is available right now. Now, a lot of you heard me talk. Last year, the end of the summer, I went up to Ontario for the Gusapalooza Festival, which is a music festival for unsigned or mostly DIY bands as a way to give them more exposure and let them go to the next level if that's where they. They choose to go. But it's, it's basically what I'm doing on an amazingly grand scale because it was huge. Like you know, two enormous stages, tons of vendors and a lot of people there or whatever. But I'm gonna go again this year and I encourage 518 bands to go to gusapalooza.com and submit your application to try to try to get on the line lineup. And you have until the end of this month, until January 31st to do that. And I suggest that you do. There's already a couple bands that I know that are, that are. They're taking a shot and trying to get on the lineup. And I do hope that it, it happens for one or or many, many of the bands, because I'll be there. And it was really cool. And I met a lot of people, made a lot of connections of people doing the same thing that I'm doing, which is trying to elevate. Elevate local or underrepresented music scenes and, you know, help out the musicians. So while I was there, that's just a long way of me saying I met some friends, but I met some friends up there. And Mike and Jake of Bad Music Club were just like, we hit it off, like, immediately and we decided, hey, let's do a collaboration. So every week I send them a band from the 518 and they put it on their show and they send me a band from their show, Bands yous Should Know, which is just a. Their. Their whole show. Their whole podcast is a lot longer. But they do the Bands you Should Know, which are short social media videos. But go check out. It's Bad Club Media is the parent company and Bad Music Club, and they're on Spotify and Amazon and Apple Music and all that. But go check them out. Really cool dudes, really love what they're doing. And right now, let's hear a band that they think that we should know on Bad Music Clubs. Band, you should know.
• 30:01
Speaker J: The Murder Balls have less than 100 monthly listeners and it's funky punk rockers from Melbourne.

• 33:41
Speaker C: Well may I set the world aflame? Gotta pay the debt and I shade of faith I'm a heck raiser yeah.
• 33:57
Speaker A: All right. That was the Murder balls with Heck razor here on Unsigned 518's Weekend Spotlight. And that comes to us courtesy of my friends Jake and Mike in the bad music club with bands you should know. And again, I implore you to go check them out. And speaking of things that you should check out, obviously the Metroland is back. Obviously, unsigned 518 is part of that. And I want to incorporate more of Metroland into this show. And one of the ways that I'm doing that is every month, TJ Foster does a hot singles in your area playlist where he compiles all the singles released from five and eight musicians in the previous month and then puts. Puts a list together and you can find that list on themtroland.com and then every month, I take that list that TJ compiles and I make a companion Spotify playlist, which you can find obviously on Spotify. And it's just called Metroland now's hot singles in your area for, you know, November, December. And I'm just gonna, you know, pull a song from the playlist every week to play on this show and hopes that, you know, you'll. You'll listen to the music and support the artist. Because even if you go to themetroland.com and you click on the link there, the artist will get a stream because, you know, you're. We're just linking to this, to the Spotify page or whatever. But the same thing with the playlist, you know, so if you go stream these, it'll help bolster the local musicians streams, and that really helps. And, you know, and it's something that's so small in theory to just listen to local music on these streaming services. And it's not that it's going to get them a lot of money, because I assure you it is not. But what it will help do is get them more ears, you know, more people listening to the music. It'll get them a better audience. And that's really what, you know, what we're trying to do here is just get a bigger audience for local bands because there is so much great music coming out of the 518. I can't even stand it sometimes. But anyway, so I'm gonna dip into the Metrolad now. Now, hot singles in your area playlist for December, which was released earlier this month. And we're gonna play a song from Blood, Blood Blood. This is their latest. It's Farewell the Flesh and it's right here on unsigned 518's weekend spotlight.
• 37:39
Speaker E: My car is a do it.
• 39:04
Speaker A: Yeah, great song. Farewell to Flesh, Blood, Blood, blood here on unsigned 518 weekend spotlight. And that is it for me for this week. I want to thank you so much for listening and if you could do me a solid and share the show with a friend. And even better, just like go to, you know, Spotify or Apple Music or Amazon or whatever pod catcher that you're. You're listening on and copy a link and share it with a friend. That way, like send it right to their. Their text and just say, hey, I think you should check out this show because that would really help me a lot and it's super, super free to do so. I appreciate that. But anyway, also want to make sure that you're checking in with themetroland.com because there's constantly content being put up there. Show reviews, there's previews, there's interviews, there's photo galleries, there's now horoscopes and there's the art murmur and there's the hot singles in your area and there's podcasts that are up there as well. You can get to by going to the metroland.com and clicking there. But if you just, you know, if we share the love and spread it around, we're gonna make the community stronger and bigger. And that's kind of what we're aiming for. So anyway, enough of my soapbox. I appreciate you. I will see you next week. I am Andy scullin. This is unsigned 518's weekend spotlight. I'll see you on the road. Unsigned 518 is produced and hosted by me, Andy Scullin. New episodes are available every week wherever you stream podcasts. If you'd like to help support the show, please like and subscribe wherever you are listening. Or you could buy me a coffee@buymeacoffee.com unsigned 518 if you would like to advertise on the show, send me an email at unsigned518mail.com and to be a guest on the show, reach out to me Through Instagram at unsigned 51 8. Take care of one another and I'll see you next week. And sculling.
