- 0:01Coming up. On this week's episode of hip Hop Now podcast, Push the
- 0:05t says his solo albums fall short of the clips catalog. My thoughts on
- 0:12the new album by No Name Sundial and Complexes best mcs out of n Y.
- 0:23This one's personal. Let's do it. Welcome to hip Hop Now Podcasts.
- 0:34If you from the future, you don't do show as out of don't
- 0:41disrespect the leg leg hip hop to say this day, Let's get right into
- 0:47the business. What up, y'all? I am your host Vegas and this
- 0:52is hip Hop Now Podcasts, a podcasts specifically designed to keep you caught up
- 0:57on all things hip hop, music and culture that happened throughout the week.
- 1:03Fifty years of hip Hop fressh Off of Birthday hip Hop is fifty now,
- 1:10So I can't retire yet, but you know whatever, midlife crisis maybe.
- 1:15But if you missed it, the last episode I produced was in celebration,
- 1:23obviously of fifty years of hip hop, but also I did a ten impact
- 1:30artists in hip hop history. Not a top ten, not necessarily v ten,
- 1:38literally just ten artists who had an impact on a large impact in my
- 1:44opinion, on this culture and the music we all enjoy if you would like
- 1:49to check that out. The link to that episode is at the end of
- 1:55this episode, which should be really good. Now, big shout out to
- 2:00hip Hop DX dot com, All hip hop dot com, Complex dot com.
- 2:09Let's get ready into the business. Push Your t says his solo albums
- 2:15falls short of the CLIPS catalog. I ain't gonna hold y'all. I think
- 2:23I agree, but let's go on. This article is on hip Hop DX
- 2:27dot com. Let's see we can get a quote from Push your team.
- 2:31He admitted taking an ell when he compares his solo catalog to the CLIPS catalog.
- 2:38This is what he had to say in our quote, just to be
- 2:42all the way honest. Ever since I went solo, I heard the cries
- 2:45from the fans of what they were missing from the clips and my solo albums.
- 2:51And I've tried to mimic and infuse and tried to cater at some point,
- 2:54but it's never enough. And I had to come to terms with that.
- 3:01What he said, he actually brings a level of I guess he's referring
- 3:06to his brother No malice used to be malest. He actually brings a level
- 3:10of introspection that's like man, I can dial into it and do it the
- 3:16way the people and the fans want to hear it. And I've taken that
- 3:21al so I'm not gonna read anymore. You can check it out on Hip
- 3:28Hop dx dot com. Check out that article. There is something different that
- 3:34I know me as a CLIPS fan. It was an adjustment for me to
- 3:38hear a solo album from Push Your Tea, mainly because what I liked about
- 3:45the Clips were their brothers. They both could rhyme. They had similar voices,
- 3:50but you can tell them apart, and they complemented each other, and
- 3:54not only in the content of their bars, but also delivery. You know
- 4:00what I'm saying. They played well off each other. It was just like
- 4:02a perfect group, to be honest, and now you're just hearing one.
- 4:06And for me in particular, Malice was my favorite out the group, I
- 4:11thought, and I know it feels like blasphemy to some of y'all, but
- 4:15I thought he was better than Push Your T. And I could point to
- 4:17a number of moments performances where I just preferred His verse didn't make Push Your
- 4:24T's verse whack. But there was something about Malice that was what Push Your
- 4:30T does but on another level, right, and it might have just been
- 4:33experienced from him being the older brother and just his perspective, Right, it
- 4:40just might be different. But I will say Push Your t probably does not
- 4:46have a whack album. He does or doesn't he has, He has albums
- 4:55that I preferred more than others. But just to really really focus in on
- 5:00this point, is he has most of his best work is his recent work
- 5:08between Almost Drive, which I believe was his last album, and Daytona Right
- 5:15my Name is My Name? Like, those three joints are dope and they
- 5:19don't sound anything alike, so I find it. I think I'm cool with
- 5:26Push Your Teeth being solo. I think he's done enough in recent years to
- 5:30make me anticipate his solo albums. Now. Will I take a new Clips
- 5:35album, of course, but I don't know if it's going to be the
- 5:40same thing, because for one, we hadn't heard in a while, and
- 5:43two, Malice is now no Malice, and no Malice don't talk about the
- 5:48same stuff that Malice used to talk about, Right. He may talk about
- 5:53it from a standpoint of that's what I used to do, but some of
- 5:57the swag is gone as a result now there is a way to achieve what
- 6:03he once was with his new ideals. I just don't hear it. Sometimes
- 6:10when I hear a song from him or hear him featured on something, it's
- 6:14not the same. So while I agree will push your T to a certain
- 6:18point, you'll never You'll never be better than you were when you were in
- 6:25the Clips. But as a solo artist, he's really good so far when
- 6:30he's released. I believe the last two projects Daytona and Almost Dry made my
- 6:35top five. Yeah, I think I remember that Daytona definitely. I still
- 6:40bump that joint to this day. It's perfect. It's perfect. Okay,
- 6:45it's perfect to me. So I don't know what do you think. Do
- 6:47you think push your T comes close to comparing his catalog to the Clips catalog?
- 6:55Or do you agree with him and said he's kind of taking the l
- 6:58because of this one last point on that to have fans to try to meet
- 7:02the demand of fans to capture what was and the Clips, it's impossible.
- 7:06So he should never try that because the Clips is the Clips. It's you
- 7:11and your brother Infrarell, and it's his bars and your bars, and that's
- 7:15what makes up the secret sauce. You can't take out and ingred a major
- 7:20ingredient and just try to replace it with whatever. You know. That's like
- 7:26when something requires milk, would you use water? Right? And then you're
- 7:29just like, nah, this is this is not the same pancakes you may
- 7:32yesterday. So there you have it. So recently, on hip hop's birthday,
- 7:40a new album from an artist you may or may not have heard of
- 7:44before plenty half but some haven't. Female MC name no name right. Her
- 7:51name is no name, Like I don't have a name, but my name
- 7:56is no name. So who I've heard of before? I heard of music
- 8:01before and it really didn't move me enough to like anticipate it. But I
- 8:09knew she was good at what she did, and I knew this new album,
- 8:13Sundown was coming out, and I was saying to myself, you know
- 8:18what, it's been a while since she dropped, and a couple of things
- 8:22have happened as far as her and what she tweets and what she says about
- 8:28things and having certain people on this album. But I'm really about the music.
- 8:33And sometimes it's difficult to separate the two because sometimes the ideals that you
- 8:41disagree with are in the music, So how can you say, well,
- 8:43it's just a good song. No, you gotta listen to the lyrics also,
- 8:48right, So I never really had the biggest problem with that stuff because
- 8:54there's plenty of hip hop artists out here that I can listen to. If
- 8:58I don't like her music, it just is what it is. So I
- 9:01decided I'm gonna give her new album, Sundal a spin. And just so
- 9:07you know, in detail, eleven tracks on this album clocks in around thirty
- 9:15two minutes, so it doesn't take up much of your time. Honestly,
- 9:18that's an ep but eleven tracks. Guest appearances include Jay Electronica comments on this
- 9:26record also Pilly Woods if you haven't heard of him, And in general,
- 9:33I like it. I like it. I like the production. I really
- 9:37like the production. Let me just say that first and foremost. I really
- 9:41like the production. I think this is a well produced album from top to
- 9:46bottom, and I feel like it's a perfect given her flow and subject matter.
- 9:54I feel like the length of time for this album is perfect for what
- 10:01it is. She as an MC can be in a quiet taste right,
- 10:07but her style is specific for certain types of hip hop fans. So,
- 10:11for example, She can be a little monotone when not many inflections in her
- 10:18delivery, but in a lot of ways without the without doing that, she
- 10:26still kind of gets her point across, you know, and usually having inflections
- 10:31in your voice will say well, I mean that line, or I'm happy
- 10:33about that, or I'm upset about that, and I still kind of get
- 10:37that from her. So for some people it may be dull it maybe a
- 10:41little monotone, but I think it's fine. What I like about her the
- 10:46most is her wordplay. I think she's like one of those unassuming mcs where
- 10:56on the surface, if you're not paying attention to the way she lines,
- 10:58there is up and uses the words and meanings and attaches like just basically puts
- 11:03together her verse. You won't even notice because it can come across soul monotone.
- 11:11But the more you listen, the more you like. That line is
- 11:16kind of crazy, you know what I'm saying, Like it's like slipping out
- 11:20of consciousness like most rappers. She a rapper two, Like that's kind of
- 11:26a dope line, you know what I'm saying. That's one of those lines
- 11:28that people start going crazy over if someone else said it in a different way.
- 11:35It's all delivered it in a different way. So she is dope in
- 11:39a lot of ways with the word play now the subject matter. Right.
- 11:45I am of the mind that it's free speech in this country. Right.
- 11:52We don't have to like the speech. We just don't. We don't even
- 11:56have to agree with this speech. I just feel like it's her prerogative to
- 12:00say what she wants to say on her album. Period. I've seen some
- 12:07things about people being upset that she has Jay Electronica on her album. Now
- 12:11this is the thing. This is the thing that's being left out of this
- 12:16conversation. But I'm inserted into it the conversation. Won't you Paul's guards to
- 12:22get crazy? Jay Electronica being featured on album. He had some things to
- 12:30say about Jews, so obviously they don't want to touch him when it comes
- 12:35to hip hop at all, which is understandable. But the problem with No
- 12:41Name is the majority of her fans are white, and she knows it,
- 12:50and I don't think she likes it. I think in a lot of ways,
- 12:54some of the things she says on Twitter and some of the things she
- 12:56may allude to or say on this project is a way of sort of kind
- 13:03of like saying, well, I don't want y'all anyway as my fans,
- 13:07and I want my people to like my music more even though we don't really
- 13:13show up for you. So I'm mad at you also, you know what
- 13:16I'm saying, Like it's it's kind of like both, right, I don't
- 13:18want y'all. I want y'all, but y'all don't want me, so I
- 13:20don't care about y'all, But like, do you want no fans? Like
- 13:24that's kind that's kind of how it is. And when that's organically your fan
- 13:30base because they dig your music, please understand you are popular on a different
- 13:39level. When you have that fan base in America, we may not like
- 13:43it. We may think it's unfair. It's the same thing you said about
- 13:46Eminembo. This is a sister we're talking about who has a predominantly white fan
- 13:52base, unfortunately, And all you gotta do is look at the fifty years
- 13:58of him pop concert and look at who's at the front of the stage.
- 14:03Predominantly they come out to pay the most money to support. They will book
- 14:11you for things, They will go to the merch area and buy your stuff,
- 14:15whereas some of us would do that as well. It's just not the
- 14:18majority of us, that's all. That's the difference. Some of us will
- 14:24do everything I just said, but the majority of us won't even show up
- 14:28to the show. And I'm no different. I'm not gonna lie, I'm
- 14:33not gonna point a finger, nothing, So you see what I'm saying.
- 14:37It's it's sort of like to me, when you get a record deal,
- 14:41you have some decisions to make. You are either going to be at the
- 14:46industry and people like me because I say that and I don't care and I
- 14:50say what I want and I exist and whatever opportunities I don't get as a
- 14:54result, so be it. And maybe that's how she feels, and I
- 14:58feel like that's okay. But if you become a person who starts to complain
- 15:05about your position in this space and complain about the lack of opportunities, while
- 15:13you gotta understand business, there's analytics and statistics that say this is your fan
- 15:20base, So why would you say something that or do something that would piss
- 15:26them off. Now, I don't know if the black hip hop community is
- 15:35going to jump in and just all of a sudden become fans of yours,
- 15:39But I wonder why they haven't yet. But I say all of that to
- 15:43say, the album as it is to me is one of the best of
- 15:48the year. I love the production, I love her wordplay. Sure it
- 15:52could be better. It's not in my top five of the year, but
- 15:56I'll tell you this much. I've listened three times, and I keep listening,
- 16:03and I keep listening, and at some point, if this happens by
- 16:07the time I reach my Best of the Year Top five of the year,
- 16:11it may have a chance to get into my top five of the year,
- 16:14as long as I feel that it's better than the five, or at least
- 16:18one of the five that I currently have on the list. Right now,
- 16:21I feel like it's just one of the best albums of the year, So
- 16:25they have it. How do you feel about this whole thing? Are you
- 16:29familiar with? No name? Leave your comments in a comment section, but
- 16:33low, and lastly, so before I even get started, y'all, if
- 16:45you've watched this podcast, if you listen to this podcast, you already know
- 16:52how I feel about Complex. And it's not like a place that I wouldn't
- 16:56like work there, right I think I should work there because I understand the
- 17:04business side of it. So everything isn't emotional for me or personal when I
- 17:10see one of their lists. But since we're talking about it, and since
- 17:17they did a top fifty New York Rappers of all time lists, I felt
- 17:23compelled by the hip hop guys on the birthday of hip hop to have something
- 17:30to say. Now, for those who don't know, is it's never seen
- 17:34a complex list. It tends to be a little controversial between complex and rolling
- 17:41stones. That's what they do, and honestly, more importantly, they probably
- 17:45do it just for engagement. So some of the people that appear on this
- 17:49list, you're like, why are they even on the list? Right,
- 17:55especially especially when you're talking about New York hip hop. There are other places
- 18:02where they got a couple of dudes who did things. But you know,
- 18:06can you hit fifty, it's probably gonna be twenty local cats on there,
- 18:11you know, if not more. Whereas when it comes to New York being
- 18:15a birthplace of hip hop, there's a ton of rappers that can make this
- 18:19list. So with that being said, I just want to say that I
- 18:25haven't looked at the list, but I'm going to look at the list right
- 18:27now, live with you, and it's not live if if It's like the
- 18:33future and you're watching this later and you're like, whoa. I mean,
- 18:37I'm saying you already know, get your ass out of here. All this
- 18:41stuff already happened. Okay, but let's get right into it. Let's just
- 18:45cheer it with the jokes and just get right into it now. I did
- 18:49see one person on this list. I saw a number fifty. And remember
- 18:53when I said earlier about why is this person even on this list? That
- 19:00person being Ice Spice. I can name a hundred rappers from New York and
- 19:06fifty years of hip hop who I will put ahead of her. And why
- 19:10do I say that? It's not hate. It's not hate because she's a
- 19:14woman. It's not hate because she's like skin. It's it's not hate because
- 19:19she's of this generation. It's hate because she's not good. She's not a
- 19:26good rapper. What's the measuring stick? Now? You can have a popular
- 19:32song and not be the best singer you can. People can agree collectively yo,
- 19:38that brother cannot sing that song is dope. So that's what I mean.
- 19:45Man, it's kind of disrespectful, But to be fair, let's see
- 19:52what they had to say and why they chose this fifty, because that's the
- 19:59key. What is the criteria for this list? Obviously, US hip hop
- 20:03heads already think about who's nights on the mic. That's why I would react
- 20:07to ice spikes like that. But that doesn't mean complexes lists that was the
- 20:14only requirement. In homage to New York's impact on hip hop, the Complex
- 20:19Music team has curated a list ranking fifty of the greatest rappers from the city
- 20:25and its surrounding areas, from some of its founding fathers and mothers to young
- 20:30bloods who have injected new energy into the city sound in the last five years.
- 20:36Skill lyrical ability if that ain't the same thing, okay, whatever,
- 20:41an impact on the genre and culture in New York and beyond were key factors
- 20:47in determining who made the cut. There are a few names on this list
- 20:51who may not have originated from New York, but their formative years were spent
- 20:56within the city and their music certainly annals the essence of New York's culture and
- 21:02sam Now their requirements skill, lyrical ability, those are the same thing if
- 21:08you ask me, But I get it, she is none of those,
- 21:12by the way. An impact on the genre that I could give to her.
- 21:19But I don't know how great of an impact that is when you're only
- 21:23talking about fifty from the birthplace of hip hop. To me, she doesn't
- 21:30make the cut. One out of three shouldn't make the cut. So let's
- 21:36just see who's in the last ten and who's in the top ten. So
- 21:40fifty Ice Spice forty nine, Faraoh manch Lord had Mercy. No, they
- 21:45don't have barrel Mancheff at forty nine. Let's just keep going. Did he
- 21:52at forty eight? Did he's on this list? The same thing applies the
- 22:02Diddy that I just said about Ice Spice impact. Hell yeah, I don't
- 22:07care. Who doesn't like the Shiny Suit era, the Lots and Big and
- 22:17black Rock. They're all signed the bad boy hip hop. They don't get
- 22:21no more hip hop. I don't care what shank, I don't care what
- 22:23suit they were wearing. People respect them lyrically. And but again, Diddy's
- 22:30on this list. I can't believe it. All right? Forty seven Bis
- 22:34Markey forty six, Styles p Lord had Mercy, styles P is not.
- 22:41He's not even in the top twenty, okay, all right? Forty five
- 22:45Jim Jones, Well, Jim Jones could be on this list. I think
- 22:52later in his career he's proven to be more of a respectable MC. I
- 23:02put Jim Jones on this list before I put somebody like me. No,
- 23:06I'm just saying, so, yeah, I don't mind that one. I'm
- 23:10not mad at that way. Forty four grand Pooba do, y'all? Well
- 23:14put it this way. I'm happy he's on the list, but I think
- 23:18Grand Pooba could at least get top thirty. Come on, man, he
- 23:22was the guy for a minute. All right, I'm getting upset, y'all.
- 23:27Melle Mell at forty three, Sean Price at forty two, Sean at
- 23:33forty, Sean Price is at forty two, Okay, forty one eight Sad
- 23:41Rocky and forty kol Mo d Some of those aren't. I'm not that bad
- 23:47at but others, I'm just like, I can argue for a couple of
- 23:53those people to come off the list, and I can argue for movement with
- 24:00like stouse P. How do you have staus P and Farrell marching Sean Price
- 24:04and the like the forties Farrell. Okay, let's go to the top ten
- 24:14before I get truly upset, because we're not gonna go through this whole list.
- 24:17You could check it out, but pay attention to who was in the
- 24:22forty or the fifty to forty, and who's in the ten to one category,
- 24:29and then think about who I didn't mention and where they could show up
- 24:34on this list, because we're not gonna go over it. Number ten Caress
- 24:40one not mad at that. Number nine Buster rhymes No now, Buster checks
- 24:47off some boxes. For sure, he might check off all of them right
- 24:52lyrical ability, but yeah, he might check off all of them. But
- 24:55at the end of the day, I think he's right outside of the top
- 24:59ten DMX. I feel the same way with X. I feel like X's
- 25:06impact was big, but I feel like lyrically it's a giver take things,
- 25:12so he should also be right outside the top ten. Number seven Nicki Minaj
- 25:18you know they did, No, they didn't. Nicki Minaj is number seven,
- 25:25but Pharaoh manches number forty nine. Nikki should be on this list,
- 25:33but she should not be top ten. Okay, number six fifty cent I'm
- 25:41sort of not mad at it, but if someone wanted to put him top
- 25:45fifteen, top twenty, I also wouldn't be mad at that. So l
- 25:51L cool j at number five. Listen, man, listen if you watch
- 25:56or listen to this podcast. I've been saying it all year, fifty years
- 26:00of hip hop. I've been seeing all year that LLL who J is the
- 26:03GOP. But that's my personal feeling, right. But number five, I
- 26:14don't know. Let's just keep going. Number four rock Cam Okay, So
- 26:18right, I already know what I'm about to see. With the top three,
- 26:22I already know, or at least I think I know. Number three.
- 26:26Nah's highly disrespectful considering this late run. But let's go number two,
- 26:33Biggie okay, and number one, and that's when I knew jay Z.
- 26:45Let's just talk about the top three. I told you all this is personal,
- 26:47Okay, Let's just talk about the top three. I love all three
- 26:55everything they have, whack albums, dope albums. I got them. It's
- 27:00a BIGGI duets because that's something else. I have everything, mixtapes, early
- 27:06stuff, everything, love all three of them. Really back then that love
- 27:11was like big and not bigger nas and jay Z kind of eventually inserted himself
- 27:17into that trinity holy Trinity of New York. Rat let the record State to
- 27:22Brooklyn Cats is in the top three. On this list, so I'm not
- 27:25mad at that, but jay Z should not be ahead of Nas. I'm
- 27:37sorry, now, do you want to talk about impact? You're trying to
- 27:44tell me Nas ain't have impact. He was on my Impact list last week
- 27:48and I explained exactly why he's there. But I think a lot of times
- 27:56with jay Z, people think about his wallet now more than the history of
- 28:00his music. He had a lot of hits, nice with it, mixtapes,
- 28:07freestyles on the radio, all of that, and not that this is
- 28:11the deciding factor. But Nas has had a nice run with these later albums
- 28:18that jay Z. He's not done anything like that. When you take jay
- 28:23Z's last three or four albums, it's hit a miss like crazy, like
- 28:30it really is, and it's not the same run late in their careers.
- 28:37And most importantly, because you could try to rewrite history. But I was
- 28:42there and I was on the radio when it happened. But jay Z and
- 28:51NAS did battle and the people decided who won, and it was Nas.
- 28:57And I don't care what you said. I was there in NY when I
- 29:03did my hip hop show and peedmore. It was the same thing on the
- 29:06commercial station out there. It's the same thing at other stations, like I
- 29:11think in LA two they did a vote to it was it was unanimous that
- 29:18NAS won the battle, and I don't care about what jay Z won the
- 29:22WARLD, what what are you talking about? This is hip hop. There's
- 29:25no wall who cares if NAS went to death Jam's business. Actually that was
- 29:30more of a hook up, right, But regardless. Now, when you
- 29:37talk about New York rat as much as we love jay Z and we love
- 29:45NAS, let's just go to one borough jay Z. I'm I'm gonna get
- 29:52close jay Z and never have Brooklyn in a way that Big did. And
- 30:00don't let anybody tell you any differently. He said it, but Big didn't
- 30:07have to say. That's the difference King of New York game from Big.
- 30:12He said it about himself. And then when he said it, you know
- 30:18what I'm saying, I'm a floor So they throw me a bed style parade
- 30:22dog. When Bigg's casket was going through bed Style was a sad moment,
- 30:30and then they had hypnotized and Brooklyn did what Brooklyn did. It was organic,
- 30:33it wasn't planned. It became a celebration of this man's life when most
- 30:40people were sad at that time. And that's when he passed. So let
- 30:45me be clad, Jane never had Brooklyn the way Big had Brooklyn. Never
- 30:55And that doesn't mean we don't claim jay Z. Of course we do,
- 31:00but it ain't never been the same, you see what I'm saying. So
- 31:06how can you have New York when it comes to rap in that way?
- 31:11You? You just can't, you know? So again, the list is
- 31:15for Gazzy, but it's their lists, and they have their motives and reasons
- 31:21and whatever. Why. But those were my personal feelings about the best hip
- 31:27hop New York rappers of all time. I think it's coolest, but whatever,
