- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Monday.
- 0:15It's the 11th of August and so delighted that you have invited
- 0:19me in so that you and I can read another chapter of the Bible
- 0:24today and this week is going to be a great week.
- 0:26We are going to today and tomorrow finish off reading
- 0:29through the book of Deuteronomy and friends.
- 0:31We have spent a a fair bit of time in the Old Testament so far
- 0:35this year. And now we are about to enter
- 0:38into a long stretch of time in the New Testament where we will
- 0:42from Wednesday this week, dive into the book of Acts.
- 0:46And then from there, oh, go on a journey through Romans and James
- 0:50and Thessalonians and Galatians. Oh, there's so much to come.
- 0:55It's so good. But we before we get there, we
- 0:59are going to finish the OG sentimentalist.
- 1:02We are going to spend a bit more time with Moses.
- 1:06And today is really Moses final speech to the people.
- 1:10And it is a blessing. And he'll go through each of the
- 1:13tribes and he will deliver a glorious blessing on each of
- 1:17them. So it's quite wonderful at the
- 1:18end of this life of tortured service, tortured leadership,
- 1:22here he is wishing nothing but the best to those that he's been
- 1:26leading. It's a beautiful example.
- 1:28And so we are going to enjoy it today as we open and read
- 1:31together Deuteronomy chapter 33. This is the blessing that Moses,
- 1:48the man of God, gave to the people of Israel before his
- 1:51death. The Lord came from Mount Sinai
- 1:55and dawned upon us from Mount Saya.
- 1:58He shone forth from Mount Paran and came from Meraba Kadesh with
- 2:04flaming fire in His right hand. Indeed, he loves his people.
- 2:09All His holy ones are in His hands.
- 2:12They follow in His steps and accept His teaching.
- 2:16Moses gave us the Lord's instruction, the special
- 2:19possession of the people of Israel.
- 2:21The Lord became king in Israel when the leaders of the people
- 2:26assembled, when the tribes of Israel gathered as one.
- 2:30Moses said this about the tribe of Reuben.
- 2:33Let the tribe of Reuben live and not die out, though they are few
- 2:37in number. Moses said this about the tribe
- 2:41of Judah. O Lord, hear the cry of Judah
- 2:45and bring them together as a people.
- 2:47Give them strength to defend their cause.
- 2:50Help them against their enemies. Moses said this about the tribe
- 2:54of Levi. O Lord, you have given your
- 2:59Thummim and Urim the sacred lots to your faithful servants, the
- 3:03Levites. You have put them to the test at
- 3:06Massa and struggled with them at the waters of Meribah.
- 3:10The Levites obeyed your word and guarded your covenant.
- 3:14They were more loyal to you than to their own parents.
- 3:17They ignored their relatives and did not acknowledge their own
- 3:20children. They teach your regulations to
- 3:23Jacob. They give your instructions to
- 3:25Israel. They present incense before you
- 3:29and offer whole burnt offerings on the altar.
- 3:32Bless the ministry of the Levites, O Lord, and accept all
- 3:36the work of their hands. Hit their enemies where it hurts
- 3:40the most. Strike down their foes so they
- 3:43never rise again. Moses said this about the tribe
- 3:47of Benjamin. The people of Benjamin are loved
- 3:51by the Lord and live in safety beside him.
- 3:55He surrounds them continuously and preserves them from every
- 3:59harm. Moses said this about the tribe
- 4:03of Joseph. May their land be blessed by the
- 4:06Lord with the precious gift of dew from the heavens and water
- 4:10from beneath the earth, With the rich fruit that grows in the sun
- 4:14and the rich harvest produced each month, with the finest
- 4:18crops of the ancient mountains and the abundance from the
- 4:21everlasting hills, with the best gifts of the earth and its
- 4:25bounty, and with the favour of the one who appeared in the
- 4:28burning Bush. May these blessings rest on
- 4:32Joseph's head, crowning the brow of the Prince.
- 4:35Among his brothers Joseph has the majesty of a young bull.
- 4:40He is the horns of a wild ox. He will gore distant nations
- 4:44even to the ends of the earth. This is my blessing for the
- 4:48multitudes of Ephraim and the thousands of Manasseh.
- 4:54Moses said this about the tribes of Zebulun and Isakah.
- 4:58May the people of Zebulun prosper in their travels.
- 5:02May the people of Isakah prosper at home in their tents.
- 5:06They summoned the people to the mountain to offer proper
- 5:09sacrifices. There they benefit from riches
- 5:12of the sea and the hidden treasures in the sand.
- 5:17Moses said this about the tribe of Gad.
- 5:19Blessed is the one who enlarges Gad's territory.
- 5:23Gad is poised there like a lion to tear off an armour ahead.
- 5:29The people of Gad took the best land for themselves, a leaders
- 5:33shareward assigned to them. When the leaders of the people
- 5:36were assembled, they carried out the Lord's justice and obeyed
- 5:40His regulations for Israel. Moses said this about the tribe
- 5:44of Dan. Dan is a lion's cub leaping out
- 5:49from Bashan. Moses said this about the tribe
- 5:52of Naftali. Oh Naftali, you are rich in
- 5:57favour and full of the Lord's blessings.
- 5:59May you possess the West and the South.
- 6:03Moses said this about the tribe of Asha.
- 6:07May Asha be blessed above other sons.
- 6:10May he be esteemed by his brothers.
- 6:12May he bathe his feet in olive oil.
- 6:15May the bolts of your gates be of iron and bronze.
- 6:19May you be secure all your days. There is no one like the God of
- 6:24Israel. He rides across the heavens to
- 6:27help you, across the skies and majestic splendour.
- 6:31The eternal God is your refuge, and His everlasting arms are
- 6:36under you. He drives out the enemy before
- 6:39you. He cries out.
- 6:41Destroy them so Israel will live in safety, prosperous Jacob in
- 6:47security, in a land of grain and new wine, while the heavens drop
- 6:52down dew. How blessed are you, O Israel,
- 6:57Who else is like you? A people saved by the Lord.
- 7:01He is your protecting shield and your triumphant sword.
- 7:06Your enemies will cringe before you and you will stomp on their
- 7:10backs. Now, Jesus, we hear in these
- 7:23blessings from Moses this beautiful lens through which he
- 7:28sees the world that all revolves around you and your love for us
- 7:33and your blessings to us. Our Lord.
- 7:37This man Moses has spent his life hearing Your word and
- 7:40leading these rebellious people. He ends his life declaring Your
- 7:45love and Your goodness. Thank You that these are your
- 7:51defining characteristics as he reflects on a life, a long life
- 7:56lived with you. Your goodness and your love to
- 8:00us is just overwhelming and wonderful.
- 8:05Thank you that in its perfect consistency and your absolute
- 8:10generosity, this love and this goodness remain with us always.
- 8:15So we praise you and we pray all of this in your name, Jesus,
- 8:19Amen.
