- 0:11Hello friends. Sean, here it is Tuesday, it is
- 0:16the 19th of December and we get another day closer to the
- 0:22Christmas time that the whole world is screaming out for.
- 0:26And today, yes friends, we have made it.
- 0:29We have made it to the final chapter of the book of Isaiah
- 0:33and we will finish it off today. Wow it It has been such a roller
- 0:40coaster of ups and downs, travelling through so many
- 0:43different phases of the journey of the nation of Israel in their
- 0:48homeland, in exile and then back in their homeland again.
- 0:52And well, it's hard to sugarcoat the ending.
- 0:56It has a very gruesome ending with dead bodies lying in the
- 1:01ground being eaten by worms. And as horrific as it sounds,
- 1:05it's actually part of a very specific cultural story which
- 1:09those people would have held. And if you remember back to when
- 1:13the Assyrians had a siege around the city of Jerusalem and God
- 1:17said, just hold strong, I will defend you.
- 1:20And 185,000 Assyrian troops died and well, you can't get rid of
- 1:27or bury that many soldiers. And so there was this horrific
- 1:31scene of 185,000 Assyrian bodies lying and decomposing open to
- 1:39the birds and the worms, and that is seared into the psyche
- 1:44of the Israeli people that this is what happens to God's
- 1:48enemies. And Jeremiah also draws
- 1:50parallels to these views that that they endured.
- 1:54So when he gets to the end, you think why would he end on such a
- 1:57gross note that is Isaiah drawing reference to the last
- 2:01time that God had saved his people and passed judgment on
- 2:06his enemies. So here we are, friends.
- 2:09It is time to settle in and hear the final chapter of this epic
- 2:15saga of Isaiah as we read together.
- 2:18Isaiah, chapter 66. This is what the Lord says.
- 2:33Heaven is my throne and the earth is my footstool.
- 2:38Could you build me a temple as good as that?
- 2:41Could you build me such a resting place?
- 2:43My hands have made both heaven and earth.
- 2:47They and everything in them are mine.
- 2:49I, the Lord, have spoken. I will bless those who have
- 2:54humble and contrite hearts, who tremble at my word.
- 2:59But those who choose their own ways, delighting in their
- 3:02detestable sins, will not have their offerings accepted.
- 3:06When such people sacrifice a bull, it is no more acceptable
- 3:11than a human sacrifice. When they sacrifice the lamb,
- 3:15it's as though they sacrifice a dog.
- 3:18When they bring an offering of grain, they may as well offer
- 3:21the blood of a pig. When they burn frankincense,
- 3:24it's as if they had blessed an idol.
- 3:27I will send them great trouble. All the things they feared for
- 3:31when I called, they did not answer.
- 3:35When I spoke, they did not listen.
- 3:37They deliberately sinned before my very eyes and chose to do
- 3:41what they know I despise. Hear this message from the Lord.
- 3:47All you who tremble at his words.
- 3:50Your own people hate you and throw you out for being loyal to
- 3:54my name. Let the Lord be honored, they
- 3:57scoff, be joyful in him, but they will be put to shame.
- 4:03What is all the commotion in the city?
- 4:05What is that terrible noise from the temple?
- 4:08It is the voice of the Lord taking vengeance against His
- 4:11enemies before the birth pains even begin.
- 4:16Jerusalem gives birth to a son who has ever seen anything as
- 4:21strange as this? Whoever heard such a thing?
- 4:25Has a nation ever been born in a single day?
- 4:28Has a country ever come forth in a mere moment?
- 4:32But by the time Jerusalem's birth pains begin, her children
- 4:36will be born? Would I ever bring this nation
- 4:39to the point of birth and then not deliver it?
- 4:41Asks the Lord. No.
- 4:44I would never keep this nation from being born, says your God.
- 4:49Rejoice with Jerusalem. Be glad with her.
- 4:52All you who love her and all you who mourn for her, drink deeply
- 4:57of her glory, even as an infant drinks at its mother's
- 5:02comforting breasts. This is what the Lord says.
- 5:06I will give Jerusalem a river of peace and prosperity.
- 5:10The wealth of the nations will flow to her.
- 5:13Her children will be nursed at her breasts, carried in her
- 5:17arms, and held on her lap. I will comfort you there in
- 5:21Jerusalem as a mother comforts her child.
- 5:25Then you will see these things. Your heart will rejoice.
- 5:28You will flourish like the grass.
- 5:31Everyone will see the Lord's hand of blessing on his servants
- 5:35and his anger against his enemies.
- 5:38See the Lord is coming with fire, and his swift Chariots
- 5:43roar like a whirlwind. He will bring punishment with
- 5:47the fury of his anger and the flaming fire of his hot rebuke.
- 5:53The Lord will punish the world by fire and by his sword He will
- 5:57judge the earth, and many will be killed by him.
- 6:01Those who consecrate and purify themselves in a sacred garden,
- 6:05with its idol in the centre, feasting on pork and rats and
- 6:09other detestable meats, will come to a terrible end, says the
- 6:14Lord. I can see what they are doing,
- 6:17and I know what they are thinking.
- 6:19So I will gather all nations and peoples together, and they will
- 6:24see my glory. I will perform a sign among
- 6:27them, and I will send those who survive to be messengers to the
- 6:31nations, to Tarshish, to the Libyans and Lydians who are
- 6:36famous as Archers, to Tubal and Greece, and to all the lands
- 6:42beyond the sea that have not heard of my fame or seen my
- 6:45glory there. They will declare my glory to
- 6:49the nations. They will bring the remnant of
- 6:52your people back from every nation.
- 6:54They will bring them to my holy mountain in Jerusalem as an
- 6:58offering to the Lord. They will ride on horses, in
- 7:02Chariots and wagons, and on mules and camels, says the Lord.
- 7:08And I will appoint some of them to be my priests and Levites.
- 7:12I, the Lord, have spoken as surely as my new heavens and
- 7:18earth will remain, so will you always be my people with a name
- 7:23that will never disappear, says the Lord.
- 7:27All humanity will come to worship me from week to week and
- 7:31from month to month. As they go out, they will see
- 7:35the dead bodies of those who have rebelled against me.
- 7:39For the worms that devour them will never die, You know, the
- 7:43fire that burns them will never go out.
- 7:46All who pass by will view them with utter horror.
- 8:01Our Lord, you paint a scene of absolute victory, absolute
- 8:06victory over your enemies, and absolute provision and rejoicing
- 8:12and joy and unity for those you love.
- 8:19Thank you that you lavish this love on us, that you provide
- 8:24this new place for us to be in union with you.
- 8:27You are a good, good Father and we love you, and we are so
- 8:33grateful for all that you do for us, all that you have done for
- 8:38us, and all that you've won for us in Jesus.
- 8:42Thank you, Holy Spirit, that you bring us your comfort and your
- 8:47presence even when we really don't deserve it.
- 8:52But you are our God and we love you, and it's you that we praise
- 8:57with our whole hearts, always in the loving name of Jesus.
- 9:03Amen.
