- 0:00Hello. I packed an umbrella due to a forecast
- 0:03of rain. But stuff still happened. So what's
- 0:08up? Are you going to walk 500 miles? Possibly
- 0:11500 more. The proclaimers proclaimed that they
- 0:14would be, and that's all cute and good, but it's
- 0:17also nowhere near enough in the year of Our Lord
- 0:192026. If you want to be on the top of your romantic
- 0:22game, you've got to look to the humpback whale.
- 0:25And not just because of the humpback part. Scientists
- 0:27track two different humpback whales who both
- 0:30made a cross -globe journey from Australia to
- 0:33Brazil and the other way around. Here's the situation.
- 0:37There are there are like whale breeding grounds,
- 0:39right? called whale houses off the coast of Australia
- 0:43and off the coast of Brazil and they don't usually
- 0:46or ever really have any kind of cross -pollination
- 0:49but two different whales one from each region
- 0:51I guess got bored of the talent in that area
- 0:54and decided to go across the planet to the other
- 0:57one both of these whales traveled over 14 000
- 1:00kilometers one of them traveled over 15 000 kilometers
- 1:03setting a new record for most traveled whale
- 1:08or something something like that So that's rad.
- 1:11Cool. Yay. Whales did some trading places. Neat.
- 1:15How do we know that? The answer is actually super
- 1:17rad. The scientists who were researching this
- 1:19used nearly 20 ,000 civilian scientists submitted
- 1:22photos of whales. Basically, people who like
- 1:24whales were like, hey, I took pictures of whales.
- 1:27Here they are. It's a bit more than that. But
- 1:30basically, whale tails are like fingerprints.
- 1:33If we can get a picture of a whale's tail, we
- 1:35can probably figure out who they are if we've
- 1:37seen them before. So they took the images, they
- 1:39took the metadata of when the image was taken
- 1:41and where, ran it through a bunch of software
- 1:43to try to identify these different whale tales,
- 1:45and they figured out the plot of these different
- 1:48whales going across the world. The exact route
- 1:51they took is not well known. It's kind of like
- 1:55a, oh, we saw them here this year, and like five
- 1:57years later, we saw them over here. It's not
- 1:59like we knew every single step they took, or
- 2:02swim they swam. The prevailing theory around
- 2:05how these whales did the thing was via the Southern
- 2:09Ocean Exchange, which is a whale thing. I guess
- 2:13there's like a feeding ground in the Antarctic,
- 2:16and whales of all types from all around the world
- 2:19might meet up there. And maybe these whales kind
- 2:21of met some new friends, and they're like, yo,
- 2:22you want to come back to my place? It's in Brazil.
- 2:25So the next time that you want to do something
- 2:26romantic for your sweetie, and you're considering
- 2:29doing some big gesture, look to the humpback
- 2:31whales, jump into the ocean in Australia, and
- 2:34swim to Brazil. Otherwise you're not even trying.
- 2:37Step it up. Alright, hold on to that fun whale
- 2:39story, because now we're gonna talk about hunger
- 2:40-striking detainees in ICE detention centers.
- 2:43Delaney Hall is a detention center in New Jersey
- 2:46that supports, as they say, about a thousand
- 2:49beds. I really dislike framing the number of
- 2:53human beings we can pack into a detention center
- 2:55with no due process as At this detention center,
- 2:59around 300 of the detainees have started a hunger
- 3:01strike, protesting against the awful and inhumane
- 3:04conditions they're being held in. They're being
- 3:05forced to live and work in utterly absurd conditions.
- 3:09Spoiled rotten food with worms in it. No toilet
- 3:12paper. Basically no medical oversight. People
- 3:15with cancer unable to get medical attention.
- 3:18They're trying to sound the alarm using the only
- 3:20lever they have, which is going on a hunger strike.
- 3:23And they're already malnourished. They're already
- 3:26underfed. Delaney Hall is operated by GeoGroup,
- 3:29which is a private prison contractor that's made
- 3:32billions off of the Trump administration's efforts
- 3:34to detain thousands upon thousands of migrants.
- 3:38It is a for -profit, privately owned detention
- 3:41center for immigrants. And whoever else ICE decides
- 3:45to label an immigrant without due process, because
- 3:47again, if there's no due process, there's no
- 3:50way to prove that you're innocent. Mark -Wayne
- 3:52Mullen, the head of the Department of Homeland
- 3:54Security, which oversees ICE, had this to say
- 3:56about the hunger strike in one of his facilities.
- 3:58Quote, there is no hunger strike at Delaney Hall
- 4:01at this time. Cool. Now Marky Wayne might have
- 4:04a bit of a point here. If you take a hammer and
- 4:07bash yourself over the head with it about a hundred
- 4:09times, it starts to make a little bit of sense.
- 4:11This is because he's technically not lying, because
- 4:14per the DHS, the definition of a hunger strike
- 4:16doesn't start until the 72nd hour of not having
- 4:19food, and it wasn't long enough then. So per
- 4:22their record keeping, technically it's not. Well
- 4:27done guys, you solved the problem. Protesters
- 4:29outside Delaney Hall have been trying to just
- 4:31impede ICE on doing the bullshit that's harming
- 4:33these people. The protesters tried to stop ICE
- 4:36from transferring the person who started the
- 4:37strike, trying to undermine the entire thing.
- 4:40Recently among the protesters was New Jersey
- 4:42Senator Andy Kim, who was hit with pepper spray,
- 4:45fired by ICE agents. They were just unloading
- 4:47pepper spray bullets into the protesters, who
- 4:49were there protesting the inhumane conditions
- 4:51that we are holding immigrants in. with no due
- 4:54process. And they're like, nah, we're going to
- 4:56shit you with pepper spray. So they pepper sprayed
- 4:58the crowd, including a sitting US senator. The
- 5:01governor of New Jersey also tried to go check
- 5:03out the situation. Governor Mickey Sheryl showed
- 5:05up, tried to be like, hey, I'm trying to see
- 5:08what's going on in here because the reports and
- 5:10the audits are not good. To which they said,
- 5:13uh, shove it. They didn't let her in, they barred
- 5:16access. The governor of this state was not allowed
- 5:19access to a government facility run through a
- 5:22private contractor holding a thousand people
- 5:25in the state that she runs. Now, again, technically,
- 5:29that's the law. Technically, I would argue. That's
- 5:34fucking stupid, states' rights, except for when
- 5:36we want to do human rights violations within
- 5:40your state. There's something very important
- 5:42here that I want to mention, which is This is
- 5:45not new. This has been going on, and I don't
- 5:47just mean over the past couple years, and I don't
- 5:49just mean under the Trump presidency, and I don't
- 5:51just mean under the second Trump presidency or
- 5:53the first Trump presidency. This has been going
- 5:56on for decades. Including Obama, who you might
- 5:59recall earned himself the nickname, Deporter
- 6:01-in -Chief. ACLU investigations show evidence
- 6:04of hunger strikes and force -feeding inmates
- 6:06in various facilities dating back to 2012. And
- 6:09that's just what they could find. Of course,
- 6:11now it's a bit different because the current
- 6:13administration is actively using this as a fear
- 6:15tactic in addition to trying to ramp it up as
- 6:17much as possible with the express intent seemingly
- 6:20to be be as mean as possible and as awful as
- 6:23possible to these people. Also, they can sate
- 6:25the bloodlust that they've been running on as
- 6:27their political platform. And so here we are.
- 6:30Our government is still disappearing people,
- 6:32now at over a thousand people a day. into facilities
- 6:35where they are treated with no basic human dignity.
- 6:39And then when they're asked about the inhumane
- 6:40conditions, they're like, what inhumane conditions?
- 6:42And when they're really pressed on it, they try
- 6:44to argue that it's better than most jails in
- 6:47the US. Which is not helpful. If you're gonna
- 6:51be out protesting at one of these facilities,
- 6:52please be safe, loud, and make sure people know
- 6:56where you are. People that you trust. That is.
- 6:59Are you trans? If you answered yes, hi. If you
- 7:02answered no, Also, hi. Regardless, trans rights
- 7:05are human rights, and we all benefit from having
- 7:07a basic, understood set of shared rights. Anyway,
- 7:12we're not doing that. It is not a stretch to
- 7:14say that the US has been on a bit of a tear with
- 7:16anti -trans legislation. Maybe not as much as
- 7:19some other countries, but pretty, pretty bad.
- 7:22Between all the bathroom bills and the trans
- 7:24sports in school bills, it's a lot. and it's
- 7:29having measurable negative impact more than just
- 7:32on the trans community. And I'll get to that
- 7:34in a second, but we are expecting two pretty
- 7:37big Supreme Court decisions by the end of June,
- 7:40both which have to do with trans girls in sports.
- 7:43I'm talking here specifically about, like, in
- 7:45school. Like, middle and high school. Little
- 7:48v. Hecox and West Virginia v. BPJ are two fairly
- 7:53similar cases that were both heard in January,
- 7:55and we're expecting to hear results... within
- 7:57a month. They are both spun out of a teenager
- 8:00who was just trying to play some sports in school
- 8:03and now is at the Supreme Court arguing for that
- 8:06right. Now you've probably heard of West Virginia.
- 8:08You probably haven't heard of BPJ. That's because
- 8:11BPJ are the initials of the minor who had to
- 8:14take this to the Supreme Court. When I was like
- 8:17a 15 year old trying to navigate school, I was
- 8:21just wavering between like figuring out how to
- 8:23make friends and furiously masturbating. And
- 8:25I didn't even have to go to the Supreme Court
- 8:27to do it. Well, that's privilege. 27 states have
- 8:30passed anti -trans sports legislation, and it
- 8:33leads to some fucked up scenarios, including
- 8:35trying to launch investigations into children's
- 8:38genitals. That thing that has been, like, slightly
- 8:41joked about, of like, how are you going to enforce
- 8:43this? What, you're going to make them drop their
- 8:45pants? The answer is kind of yeah. We already
- 8:48saw an investigation of a teenage girl who they
- 8:51got a tip. that someone thought she was trans,
- 8:54and it resulted in an investigation into her
- 8:57medical history and biology. This is just a random
- 9:00teenage girl. No human in this country should
- 9:05have the government investigating their current
- 9:08biological state for any reason, let alone this.
- 9:13But apparently, high school and middle school
- 9:15sports are that important that we have to throw
- 9:18away all notions of privacy. In Arizona, and
- 9:21this doesn't even have a trans student in it,
- 9:23a cisgender male student wanted to go onto the
- 9:26basketball team, but was stopped because there
- 9:29was a clerical error with his birth certificate.
- 9:32His birth certificate accidentally said female
- 9:34when he was not. And that was it. But it was
- 9:38enough to prevent him from joining the basketball
- 9:40team altogether. The actual response from the
- 9:43school district about why the fuck they did this
- 9:45was that our schools rely on students' original
- 9:49birth certificate at birth to determine athletic
- 9:53eligibility. Here's how birth works. Your mom
- 9:56poops you out, right? Right out the butt. And
- 9:58then the doctor takes you, spanks you, and then
- 10:01asks you, what kind of sports are you good at?
- 10:04If you don't answer then and there, you are eternally
- 10:07barred from those sports. Also, you can't be
- 10:10a woman. It is estimated that trans people make
- 10:12up somewhere between one and three percent of
- 10:14the population, and we have spent millions upon
- 10:17millions of dollars and untold man -hours putting
- 10:20through legislation to attack a single digit
- 10:24number of trans students. All the while, there's
- 10:27no actual evidence of it being dangerous for
- 10:30a trans student to participate in whatever gendered
- 10:34sport they want. And also, It's fucking middle
- 10:38and high school sports. Get the fuck over it.
- 10:41I know it's bad faith. I know no one actually
- 10:44gives a shit about the sports angle and protecting
- 10:47the kids in their sports or whatever. Just stop
- 10:50being transphobic. Like, it's so easy. It's so
- 10:53easy to just not do that. We can save time, money,
- 10:58energy, lives by simply just saying, oh, you're
- 11:01trans? Cool. This affects me in no way. Oh, you're
- 11:05a trans 14 year old and you want to play basketball?
- 11:08Okay. There's virtually no way that you have
- 11:11an advantage over any other student. You're fucking
- 11:1314. Never mind puberty. Now I'm just going on
- 11:16a rant. People have puberty at different ages.
- 11:19What the fuck doesn't matter at this point? It's
- 11:21in a high school. You can have a 16 year old
- 11:23who's teeny tiny and a 16 year old who's like
- 11:25seven feet tall. Anyway, eat shit. Panels of
- 11:29old white men banging gavels and saying that
- 11:32certain children can't do certain things because
- 11:34of their genitals Get bent eat shit die etc.
- 11:37Do you want a job? Most of us do don't try to
- 11:42go in the tech industry or do it's pretty much
- 11:44every other week that I feel like I'm talking
- 11:46about a Massive tech layoff and so this week
- 11:48I wanted to do a bit of digging and aggregate
- 11:51some numbers for you And then I started aggregating
- 11:53the numbers and the numbers got Really big if
- 11:55we look at layoffs in the tech industry from
- 11:58just this year in fact just this month We have
- 12:02coinbase laying off 14 % of its workers about
- 12:05700 people LinkedIn laying off 5 % of its workers
- 12:09around 875 people. Cisco laying off 4 ,000 people.
- 12:14PayPal laying off 20 % about 4 ,760. Cloudflare
- 12:18laying off 20 % at about 1 ,100 people. Ticketmaster
- 12:21laying off 8 % at about 350 people. Groupon did
- 12:24not know they were still around, laying off 25
- 12:26% at 400 people. Intuit laying off 17 % at 3
- 12:30,000 people. Wix laying off 20 % at 1 ,000 people.
- 12:34And now Meta is starting their next wave of layoffs.
- 12:37It's gonna be about 8 ,000 people who are receiving
- 12:40emails at four in the morning local time telling
- 12:43them you don't have a job anymore. That was May.
- 12:49So far. And also that was not an exhaustive list.
- 12:52I left out the companies that most people would
- 12:55not recognize. That was just the flagship companies.
- 12:57There's like at least twice as much. According
- 12:59to CNBC, the layoffs so far this year have crossed
- 13:02150 ,000 jobs, with over 130 companies doing
- 13:06these layoffs. If you check out layoffs .fy,
- 13:08you can get a whole bunch more info. And if you
- 13:10combine 2026 and 2025's numbers, you get nearly
- 13:14a quarter of a million tech jobs that got laid
- 13:16off, which almost scrapes at 2023's numbers,
- 13:19which saw over 260 ,000. in one year. Granted,
- 13:23that year was a little bit different because
- 13:24there was a lot of, uh, quote -unquote, right
- 13:27-sizing after a lot of companies did tons of
- 13:29hiring at the beginning of the pandemic. Basically,
- 13:31every company was like, oh, we're just gonna,
- 13:32we'll hire eternally and have record profits
- 13:35forever. Oh, shit. My profits. These layoffs
- 13:38are not uniformly because any one reason, and
- 13:41I would encourage you to be very skeptical whenever
- 13:44you see that a layoff happened because AI, because
- 13:47the reality is, it's just not there. The productivity
- 13:50gains that these companies really want to have
- 13:52happen that they just tell everybody is happening
- 13:54aren't really happening. And it's not leading
- 13:57to the point that we can lay off tens of thousands
- 14:00of people at a time and see gains. It's about
- 14:03adjusting their numbers, doing stock buybacks,
- 14:05getting headcount by profit numbers better. It's
- 14:08all that crap. In some cases, yeah, they do need
- 14:12to downsize. But my goodness, there's been so
- 14:14much downsizing that companies are starting to
- 14:16turn back around and being like, okay, actually...
- 14:18Let's see if we can hire those people back because
- 14:20we kind of jumped the gun. So it is both a bad
- 14:24time and a good time to get into the tech industry
- 14:26because they're laying everybody off, but realizing
- 14:29that's a bad call. I'm now realizing having just
- 14:32said that. Don't get in the tech industry. That
- 14:34sounds toxic as fuck. And I used to be in that
- 14:37industry and got out before all this hit. And
- 14:39I don't know what I would do if I had to go back.
- 14:41Anyway, lightning round. Speaking of AI, Pope
- 14:44Leo dropped a pretty scathing review of the current
- 14:46state of AI. A wholly scathing review. This isn't
- 14:49as recent, but I do want to have an update on
- 14:51this. You may remember a while back I talked
- 14:53about the heist at the Louvre, where they stole
- 14:56a bunch of crown jewels from France. Those still
- 14:58haven't been returned. Investigators just don't
- 15:01know where they are. So, there was a chemical
- 15:03plant in California that very nearly exploded.
- 15:06It triggered an evacuation of 50 ,000 people.
- 15:09It didn't explode. Uh, it didn't, it didn't explode.
- 15:12It nearly did. It didn't. And finally for today,
- 15:15autonomous car company Waymo is suspending its
- 15:17operations in a bunch of southeastern states
- 15:20after there was footage of their cars driving
- 15:22directly into flooded streets. That privilege
- 15:25is reserved for us humans now. Thank you so much
- 15:28for listening to today's episode of Stuff Keeps
- 15:30Happening. Head to skh .news for sources, bonus
- 15:33content, and instructions on what to do if you
- 15:37are an autonomous vehicle and there's a flooded
- 15:39road in front of you. Spoiler, the instructions
- 15:41are don't go in it. My name is Endeavorance.
- 15:44We'll talk again soon. Take care and be well.
