Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: A huge day for the agricultural sector. Field Days get
- 0:03Speaker 1: Underweight Mystery Creek today for its fifty eighth year. More
- 0:06Speaker 1: than one one hundred exhibitors are on site. Every single
- 0:10Speaker 1: space is sold out. Federated Farmers Immigration spokesperson Carl Dean
- 0:14Speaker 1: is heading along and he joins me, Now, good morning, Carl,
- 0:17Speaker 1: Good morning. Paint us a bit of a picture of
- 0:20Speaker 1: how Field Days is going to run today.
- 0:24Speaker 2: So I say, this is obviously going to be the
- 0:26Speaker 2: busy day for the farmers, and it's beautiful weathery're up
- 0:29Speaker 2: here in Hamilton, so it's going to be a busy day.
- 0:32Speaker 2: I expect lots of people through the whole event, and
- 0:37Speaker 2: hopefully a few people come and see us in the
- 0:38Speaker 2: advocacy hub as well.
- 0:40Speaker 1: The fifty eighth year. Does it show how strong our
- 0:43Speaker 1: agriculture sector is?
- 0:46Speaker 2: It does? I mean it shows that this event keeps
- 0:50Speaker 2: happening year after year. I think briefly stopped one year
- 0:54Speaker 2: during COVID. Perhaps it just shows that every year farmers
- 0:58Speaker 2: turned out and droves have looked at all the greatest
- 1:01Speaker 2: newest tech to get together talk amongst people that they
- 1:05Speaker 2: may not have seen for a year. You know, some
- 1:08Speaker 2: people they'll meet up at field Days every year. It's
- 1:11Speaker 2: a great community event as well.
- 1:13Speaker 1: Are you expecting there'll be a spend up.
- 1:17Speaker 2: I think that'll be It'll be interesting to see the
- 1:21Speaker 2: thing in the recent years. Most people it's going to
- 1:25Speaker 2: spend money. They won't do it at field Days, whether
- 1:27Speaker 2: prior or. They might do it a few months afterwards.
- 1:30Speaker 2: But it's the best time to come and look at
- 1:32Speaker 2: all the different types of gear that are here and
- 1:36Speaker 2: compare them now. They won't say the latest tech.
- 1:40Speaker 1: No episode is going to mention that a lot of innovation,
- 1:42Speaker 1: a lot of new tech. Are you you know, are
- 1:44Speaker 1: there any unique stalls that you're king to check out?
- 1:49Speaker 2: I think for myself will be just just having a
- 1:51Speaker 2: look at sea if there's any new technology in the
- 1:54Speaker 2: dairy space, in terms of if there's any any progression
- 1:58Speaker 2: and can cows but more efficiently, or how are we
- 2:02Speaker 2: looking at virtual fencing or heat detection for cows? All
- 2:07Speaker 2: those products seem to be evolving in a rapid space
- 2:10Speaker 2: at the moment.
- 2:12Speaker 1: How where do people go what do they get out
- 2:14Speaker 1: of it?
- 2:16Speaker 2: Once you mentioned before, it's really about for the farmers.
- 2:19Speaker 2: It's about connecting with other farmers and people that they
- 2:23Speaker 2: may not have seen in a year's time. So it
- 2:26Speaker 2: is about that whole community feel and well, I know,
- 2:29Speaker 2: I know people that have come from the South End
- 2:32Speaker 2: come up every year. It's literally they come catch up
- 2:36Speaker 2: with people that they are from the North End, have
- 2:38Speaker 2: a look around, have a good jarn and really just
- 2:43Speaker 2: get together.
- 2:43Speaker 1: It's great your thoughts on acts proposed rural workforce visa.
- 2:50Speaker 2: I think it's a good step and you know, obviously
- 2:55Speaker 2: it's a proposal. It's something that i'd love to see
- 2:59Speaker 2: some other political parts bodies come out with similar proposs
- 3:02Speaker 2: for something that can help provincial New Zealand, as we
- 3:06Speaker 2: still do have a low unemployment figure in the provinces.
- 3:13Speaker 2: So it's really about trying to actually specify that well,
- 3:17Speaker 2: in the rural economy we still need this labor force.
- 3:20Speaker 1: Does it improve on what we already have?
- 3:24Speaker 2: I think it gives a very clear pathway for At
- 3:28Speaker 2: the moment, we seem to have a lot of skilled
- 3:30Speaker 2: migrants that will go to Australia and Canada because they
- 3:34Speaker 2: can see clear pathway to residency, and it's that that
- 3:38Speaker 2: New Zeland's currently missing. It's a bit hairy fiery. You've
- 3:44Speaker 2: got a lot of hope that you get from one
- 3:47Speaker 2: visa to another visa to be on that pathway. This
- 3:50Speaker 2: would allow it to be very clear cut and we'd
- 3:53Speaker 2: probably then be on a level playing field with those countries.
- 3:56Speaker 1: So do you know whether do you know where the
- 4:00Speaker 1: somebody who was on one of these visas would have
- 4:01Speaker 1: to return home and come back again in order to
- 4:04Speaker 1: get there two three year visas to hit that six
- 4:07Speaker 1: year mark.
- 4:09Speaker 2: From what I understand, note, they would be able to
- 4:12Speaker 2: continue to stands on for the six years, provided that
- 4:17Speaker 2: there is still the skills shortage at the end of
- 4:21Speaker 2: that three year mark. So now obviously if the labor
- 4:25Speaker 2: shortage was no longer in the country, and you advertised
- 4:28Speaker 2: and here we applied and keep you was suitable, then
- 4:33Speaker 2: that person will most slightly have to go home. But
- 4:35Speaker 2: I feel still the labor shortage they would gain another
- 4:39Speaker 2: three years.
- 4:40Speaker 1: Right, Carl Deen, thank you so much. You're right. The
- 4:42Speaker 1: weather does look fantastic, so enjoy the next four days.
- 4:45Speaker 1: Thank you so much for your time. For more from
- 4:48Speaker 1: early edition with Ryan Bridge, listen live to news Talks
