- 1:49SPEAKER_12: She's in Hong Kong, I believe.
- 1:51SPEAKER_12: Ah, she's in China.
- 1:52SPEAKER_12: Yeah, I think she wanted to uh check off another castle off uh her and David's list.

- 4:35SPEAKER_06: Hey friends, let's look at the training schedule.
- 4:40SPEAKER_06: Wine and Dine is now 84 days away.
- 4:47SPEAKER_06: 84 days until Expo Day.
- 4:51SPEAKER_06: We are in training week number six on the Jeff Galloway Run Disney training schedule.
- 4:58SPEAKER_06: And the long run is now up to six and a half miles if you're running the half or the challenge.
- 5:07SPEAKER_06: Marathon Weekend, 160 days away from the 5k.
- 5:12SPEAKER_06: Training week five for Marathon Weekend.
- 5:15SPEAKER_06: And right now, regardless of your distance, your long run this weekend is three miles.
- 5:23SPEAKER_06: Uh, I want to pass on a note thanking my many wonderful friends in the Rise and Run community.
- 5:30SPEAKER_06: I am now registered through the Multiple Sclerosis Association of America for my charity bid for Springtime Surprise.
- 5:41SPEAKER_06: You helped me, you well, you got me to the goal.
- 5:44SPEAKER_06: And I got my registration link this week.
- 5:46SPEAKER_06: And I know John and Greg are not far behind.
- 5:49SPEAKER_06: I had a bit of advantage.
- 5:50SPEAKER_06: I had less to raise than they did.
- 5:53SPEAKER_06: But I I want to thank all and I want to thank all of our friends.
- 5:57SPEAKER_06: And if John and Greg will let me be presumptuous enough to thank them on thank you on their behalf as well.
- 6:06SPEAKER_06: Let's see, we talked about it when we talked about Iliana's introduction.
- 6:11SPEAKER_06: Greg, loopers this weekend.
- 6:13SPEAKER_12: It is my excitement level is is through the roof because I love getting copied on so many different various forms of correspondence, whether that's via email or in our we have our uh loopy looper Discord going as well.
- 6:29SPEAKER_12: There are just so many people, and then especially today, uh day of recording on the customized training call.
- 6:35SPEAKER_12: I almost kind of forgot how many people in that particular call are going to be coming up to New Jersey this weekend.
- 6:43SPEAKER_12: And uh we're talking from several different states, you know, that require planes, trains, and automobiles in order to get there all to run around the same three and three-quarter loop as many times uh as possible.
- 6:58SPEAKER_12: But it's gonna be uh it's gonna be a great time again to be able to spend that time with friends.
- 7:04SPEAKER_12: It looks like there is some rain in the forecast, but the last time I checked the Aki Weather app, it said it said mainly later.
- 7:13SPEAKER_12: So I'm gonna you know keep doing my uh anti-rain dance, you know, uh in the infield of the track there.
- 7:21SPEAKER_12: So hopefully it doesn't affect us 12-hour people.
- 7:23SPEAKER_12: But for those of you doing the 24-hour or the 100-miler, I'm sorry if that does happen.
- 7:30SPEAKER_12: But again, we're just so excited to be able to get the Rise and Run family together, the we'll run for family together as well.
- 7:37SPEAKER_12: Is it just gonna be a splendid time?
- 7:39SPEAKER_12: And uh yeah, we're we're gonna keep uh loop in the loop uh for uh for as long as we can on Saturday.
- 7:44SPEAKER_12: It's gonna be great.
- 7:45SPEAKER_13: Saturday should be good.
- 7:46SPEAKER_13: It's Sunday.
- 7:47SPEAKER_13: It's good, looks to be the uh hit or miss, I think, from what I'm looking at, Doctor Rather.
- 7:50SPEAKER_12: So okay, all right.
- 7:51SPEAKER_12: So I mean, I'm sure it's gonna be changing every five minutes.
- 7:55SPEAKER_12: So obviously we won't believe it uh until we're there.
- 7:57SPEAKER_12: But looking forward to seeing everybody.
- 7:59SPEAKER_13: And and Greg, it's Jersey, not New Jersey.
- 8:02SPEAKER_13: Sorry, my apologies.
- 8:04SPEAKER_06: Okay, now that we've settled on that, let's see.
- 8:07SPEAKER_06: Uh I wanted to remind my friends the Donna Marathon weekend is still quite a ways off.
- 8:12SPEAKER_06: It's 190 days away.
- 8:13SPEAKER_06: It's in early February of 27.
- 8:16SPEAKER_06: Many of you signed up for Team Rise and Run.
- 8:20SPEAKER_06: I'm in the process of changing those registrations.
- 8:24SPEAKER_06: Rather, I should say I have asked to have those registrations changed to Team Moving for Jeff Galloway.
- 8:33SPEAKER_06: So I'll let you know when that happens.
- 8:36SPEAKER_06: Um I've had some requests about a team shirt.
- 8:40SPEAKER_06: I've been in contact with Alec from Kawaii and Pizza Apparel.
- 8:44SPEAKER_06: She said she'd be happy to help us if we can come up with a design.
- 8:47SPEAKER_06: So maybe we'll get together on that.
- 8:50SPEAKER_06: Looking at other races we have coming down the road, of course, Burden Hand's now seven, no, six weeks away.
- 8:56SPEAKER_06: 43 days.
- 8:58SPEAKER_06: I know Greg is still working.
- 9:00SPEAKER_06: Uh and in fact, Greg, you sent a note out this morning to someone about a buffet, and we're waiting to hear back, right?
- 9:09SPEAKER_06: So we're hoping by the way.
- 9:10SPEAKER_06: That is correct.
- 9:10SPEAKER_12: Yeah, we're just waiting on confirmation.
- 9:12SPEAKER_12: Uh, it is uh I I did some YouTube research over the weekend.
- 9:16SPEAKER_12: It uh it is quite a nice Schmorgisborg.
- 9:19SPEAKER_12: Probably not to the level of Shady Maple, but at least it it will be shady maple adjacent.
- 9:25SPEAKER_12: There there is a new phrase for uh for for the podcast.
- 9:29SPEAKER_12: But uh if for God forbid that were the fall through, then plan B is uh I'm gonna deliver some flowers to my contact over at Shady Maple and see if I can woo her into uh letting us have a reservation there.
- 9:43SPEAKER_12: But um well, yeah, we'll we'll hopefully hopefully by the time you're listening to next week's episode, we will have a concrete plan in place.
- 9:51SPEAKER_06: See, I thought you were going with if that falls through, there's always Domino's pizza.
- 9:56SPEAKER_12: Oh Domino's that that nice Italian restaurant.
- 9:59SPEAKER_06: All right.
- 10:00SPEAKER_06: Uh let's see.
- 10:01SPEAKER_06: News from Run Disney, a teaser for the themes for the upcoming virtual Halloween spectacular races, for which registration opens on August 11th.
- 10:17SPEAKER_06: Uh, I I saw them.
- 10:18SPEAKER_06: What did you think, my friends?
- 10:20SPEAKER_08: To me, it gave Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween party like the parade vibes.
- 10:27SPEAKER_08: It looks like maybe the headless horsemen and gravediggers.
- 10:34SPEAKER_08: I wasn't sure what the first one was until I actually watched the video of the gravedigger.
- 10:39SPEAKER_08: But yeah, I don't know.
- 10:41SPEAKER_08: I I want to see more.
- 10:43SPEAKER_08: Um and know a little bit more.
- 10:45SPEAKER_08: But um overall I like the concept.
- 10:49SPEAKER_08: People had mixed emotions on social media though.
- 10:52SPEAKER_06: Oh, isn't that always the way?
- 10:54SPEAKER_08: Right.
- 10:55SPEAKER_06: Yeah, yeah.
- 10:56SPEAKER_06: But uh yeah, that'd be two weeks from Tuesday, right?
- 11:00SPEAKER_06: That registration opens for those.
- 11:02SPEAKER_06: So I'm sure we'll hear something pretty soon.
- 11:04SPEAKER_12: Yeah, I was glad to hear them say something because over the weekend uh our buddy Kay had messaged me and she's like, Have you heard anything about me?
- 11:11SPEAKER_12: Because it was almost kind of like radio silence for a really, really long time about it.
- 11:17SPEAKER_12: And I was like, Yeah, I I don't know anything outside of you know what's posted on the website, and now here we are, you know, with this anasmel.
- 11:24SPEAKER_12: What I thought we were getting today was going to be wine and dime medals, uh, because our buddy, um, our buddy Ryan Teats put up a graphic over the weekend that uh he had some historical data in terms of uh uh the dates of when medals get announced, and typically even when the race was in November, typically we've gotten medals in the middle of July, and here we are at the end of the month and still don't have them.
- 11:54SPEAKER_12: So obviously, hopefully by you know August we'll we'll be getting them and such.
- 11:58SPEAKER_12: But um going back to the the spectacular virtual Alicia, until you said that I didn't even make the correlation to Mickey's um not so scary, but but you're spot on with that analysis that you know because it's definitely the um when I saw the the video I knew right away it was a gravedigger.
- 12:18SPEAKER_12: Um the the one that it was the couple that that was dancing, that was the one that threw me off.
- 12:23SPEAKER_12: But then I realized that it's probably you know the dancing ghosts within the haunted mansion and stuff like that.
- 12:28SPEAKER_12: So yeah, I mean, with how well the uh the summer virtuals uh have been received uh these uh last couple of weeks and people making their social media posts, uh I you know anxious to see what this hardware looks like for uh Halloween.
- 12:41SPEAKER_06: Yep.
- 12:41SPEAKER_06: Well, that's something to look forward to.
- 12:42SPEAKER_06: And the medals, uh, wine and I'm medals, I'm sure I hadn't thought about it, but heck, I announced it at the beginning.
- 12:49SPEAKER_06: We're inside 90 days, 84 days.
- 12:52SPEAKER_13: You know, they'll come out after recording tonight.
- 12:55SPEAKER_12: Probably, probably, John, like they always do, they typically do.
- 12:59SPEAKER_06: They that's okay though.
- 13:01SPEAKER_12: Well, speaking of wine dine, did you guys see the news uh that Brooks dropped?
- 13:06SPEAKER_12: Now I think it only went out to if you're a member of their run club, yeah.
- 13:12SPEAKER_12: They are doing a sweepstakes for wine and dine.
- 13:16SPEAKER_12: So um I'm just you know looking at their social media post for it.
- 13:20SPEAKER_12: It says here, log a 10k run or walk between uh July 27th, so that obviously hopping the Mandalorian.
- 13:27SPEAKER_12: That was a couple of days ago, uh, through August 2nd, uh, so that would be this weekend, uh, for a chance to win one of 10 race packages to uh the wine and dine half marathon weekend.
- 13:41SPEAKER_12: So um if you got a 10k on the uh the calendar this weekend and uh you don't have a way in the wine and dine, maybe this is another uh another opportunity for you to get in.
- 13:51SPEAKER_12: It's it's a little hard to find on their website though.
- 13:53SPEAKER_12: That's the only thing.
- 13:54SPEAKER_12: The the run club or the sweepstakes information?
- 13:56SPEAKER_12: The sweepstak information.
- 13:58SPEAKER_11: Okay.
- 13:58SPEAKER_12: Well, they probably do that on purpose because they don't want you know a million people registering for prizes.
- 14:05SPEAKER_06: We're gonna have to look into it.
- 14:06SPEAKER_06: I am in I joined that run club a long time ago, but I I didn't see it, I saw it in our discussion, our chat, but I didn't see it from uh from Brooks.
- 14:17SPEAKER_12: Okay, I only ever joined that because that was the only way by joining the run club that if you wanted to buy the shoes, if you like weren't there for you know a particular weekend, or you know, maybe your size sold out, you know, you had to be part of that run club in order to gain access to the Run Disney shoes.
- 14:36SPEAKER_12: So I'm sure there's more and more people that are joining that that uh listserv uh every day.
- 14:41SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 14:42SPEAKER_06: Uh speaking of buying stuff, I'm gonna jump in here.
- 14:46SPEAKER_06: Our friend Alec, I referred to her just a few minutes ago at Kawaiian Pizza Apparel, has information on our penguin shirts for the 5K for marathon weekend.
- 14:56SPEAKER_06: We've got women's and men's athletic shirts are gonna be priced from 32 to$34.
- 15:04SPEAKER_06: The extra$2 for$2 and 3XL in the men's.
- 15:09SPEAKER_06: She has kids' shirts available also on the site.
- 15:13SPEAKER_06: Uh shipping still around$5.
- 15:16SPEAKER_06: But the the way this works with Alec, I remember talking about this the last time when we did the uh alien shirts.
- 15:24SPEAKER_06: There's no discount on this shirt.
- 15:26SPEAKER_06: She prices it at rock bottom.
- 15:29SPEAKER_06: But if you order something else, you can use the rise and run discount, which is rise and run, is the code.
- 15:40SPEAKER_06: And then if the total of your order is$50 or more, which if you're ordering a second shirt, it will be, you can use her code FreeShip50 and get free shipping on the entire order.
- 15:54SPEAKER_06: So I will have the link to where those shirts are posted to our Facebook group page.
- 16:03SPEAKER_06: And they look pretty sharp.
- 16:04SPEAKER_06: They're a penguin shirt, and of course they got the rise and run logo on one of the sleeves, and uh KPA Kwyan Pizza Apparel, Alec always does a nice job.
- 16:15SPEAKER_06: They're good quality shirts, and they're they're a very fair price that she's charging for what we get.
- 16:22SPEAKER_06: So finally had some information on that.
- 16:26SPEAKER_06: But back to training, friends.
- 16:27SPEAKER_06: Any training updates we want to share this week?
- 16:30SPEAKER_12: I have a a pretty big announcement uh to make, and uh apparently I uh created quite a comical stir day of recording here on the customized training call.
- 16:42SPEAKER_12: I have signed up for my first ultra.
- 16:45SPEAKER_06: Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 16:47SPEAKER_06: This is great.
- 16:48SPEAKER_06: Go ahead, Greg.
- 16:49SPEAKER_06: This is great.
- 16:49SPEAKER_12: All right.
- 16:50SPEAKER_12: So there are many times in life where I get very frustrated with social media because obviously it can be very negative, it can be very toxic.
- 16:58SPEAKER_12: But yeah, there are those glimmering days, you know, especially when I read wonderful posts on our Rise and Run Facebook page and such.
- 17:05SPEAKER_12: But uh I I was scrolling on Instagram and um our buddy uh Brianna, the uh the newest uh host over at Will Run For, she shared something to her Instagram story that this uh this women's ultra club uh in the greater Philadelphia area is hosting a 50K all themed around Wawa.
- 17:33SPEAKER_12: So I clicked on the details and it's very, very similar when we had Divya on a couple of weeks or months ago talking the uh the Taco Bell 50K and how she talked about you had to you visit certain locations and then at at and you had to eat various things over the course of the 50k, they're doing the exact same thing here.
- 17:56SPEAKER_12: So um I I can't remember if it's an out and back or a point-to-point, but uh you'll be visiting six Wawa locations, and there is a list of food and drink items that you have to purchase throughout the day.
- 18:13SPEAKER_12: Um, now instead of having the receipt, in order to get the bonus points, you have to take a photo of yourself eating or drinking said item on the list.
- 18:24SPEAKER_12: This is great.
- 18:25SPEAKER_12: And I was like, you know what?
- 18:27SPEAKER_12: I've never done anything like this before.
- 18:30SPEAKER_12: Let's just go for it.
- 18:32SPEAKER_12: But before I I asked for coach's blessing, I was like, oh, let me just see how this lines up with my um with my training schedule.
- 18:41SPEAKER_12: And wouldn't you know it's a this is occurring two weeks after Bird in Hand.
- 18:46SPEAKER_12: And it just so happens that I have to do 26 miles that day in preparation for New York City.
- 18:53SPEAKER_12: That's perfect.
- 18:54SPEAKER_12: But I but the only reason why it's bumped up is because I have back-to-back business trips um this fall, which is so you know, coach wants me that to hit the 26 um before that, so I can have a proper taper.
- 19:08SPEAKER_12: And it just so happens that it was coincidental with it.
- 19:10SPEAKER_12: So I asked him and just started this whole stir crazy conversation about stomach issues, and and then I admitted to everyone on the call because the the first item on the list is you have to uh drink a coffee because you know, Wawa's known for their you know, for their various uh flavors of coffee.
- 19:31SPEAKER_12: And I'm like, I've never sipped an ounce of coffee in my life.
- 19:36SPEAKER_12: Uh-oh.
- 19:36SPEAKER_12: So I don't know what I'm gonna do.
- 19:38SPEAKER_12: And then of course that started the whole conversation, but then other people got excited about it.
- 19:43SPEAKER_12: So um our friend Sarah, uh, she might be joining me in this venture.
- 19:48SPEAKER_12: And then my teammate uh for Loopy this weekend, Beth, um, she's now thinking about coming down to uh do this with me.
- 19:57SPEAKER_12: So we might have a little rise and run team that is just gonna uh saunter from Wawa to Wawa to Wawa.
- 20:04SPEAKER_12: So uh I'm very excited about this.
- 20:06SPEAKER_12: So I mean, yes, in theory, it will be my first 50k, but I like the fact that it'll be broken up into chunks and I will I would be able to use a real bathroom.
- 20:16SPEAKER_12: I would be able to use the Coke Freestyle machine to fill up uh my hydration bladder with ice.
- 20:24SPEAKER_12: Plus, uh, you know, some of the items that you have to buy are like a tasty cake butterscotch crimpet.
- 20:29SPEAKER_12: I'm looking forward to that.
- 20:30SPEAKER_12: Alicia, you'll love this one.
- 20:32SPEAKER_12: Uh, you have to buy a pickle.
- 20:34SPEAKER_08: That's great, yeah.
- 20:36SPEAKER_12: Um, and you know, so a whole slew of other things.
- 20:39SPEAKER_12: So while it's an intimidating distance, I'm very, very excited to be running this.
- 20:44SPEAKER_12: And I'm gonna be tagging the heck out of Wawa on this because ever since I made that Dole Whip soda post uh or reel on our Instagram page, uh, they have been commenting on that post, and then anytime I tag them in something, they're having the conversation or DMs.
- 21:01SPEAKER_12: So this might be a wonderful opportunity for the Rise and Run Podcast and Wawa to join forces together.
- 21:08SPEAKER_12: And I really hope we can make this happen.
- 21:10SPEAKER_08: I was gonna ask if that was the underlying thought behind it.
- 21:13SPEAKER_08: You want a partnership with Wawa?
- 21:15SPEAKER_12: I'm I mean it's not gonna hurt.
- 21:17SPEAKER_12: I mean, you know, there's so many Wawas in Florida now, so it could be you know the official gas station convenience store of the Rise and Run podcast, and until and until Bucky's ponies up the way, right?
- 21:29SPEAKER_12: Yeah, we'll we'll we'll go for we'll go with that.
- 21:31SPEAKER_06: But you know there are more uh Wawa locations in Florida than Pennsylvania?
- 21:36SPEAKER_12: I remember you telling me this a while back, which flabbergassed me, but I mean it goes to show how popular it was probably because of snowbirds and such.
- 21:44SPEAKER_06: Uh in part, yes, no doubt, in part that's true.
- 21:48SPEAKER_06: And I correct me if I'm wrong, the Wawas in the Pennsylvania area are more or less clustered on the eastern side of the state, whereas in Florida, they're all over.
- 21:59SPEAKER_12: Correct, yes.
- 22:00SPEAKER_12: In Pennsylvania, you actually probably burden hand and Lancaster is like is is the cutoff because um I there there is a Wawa in Lancaster, but I know like within a 10-minute drive of the start line of Burden Hand, you can get to a sheets.
- 22:18SPEAKER_12: Yes, and then it's right, and then everything from there on west is sheets.
- 22:22SPEAKER_06: So yeah.
- 22:24SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 22:24SPEAKER_06: Uh it's 7-Eleven in Florida, but 7-Eleven I think has peaked.
- 22:32SPEAKER_13: Yeah.
- 22:33SPEAKER_13: South South Jersey also is a big Wawa community.
- 22:36SPEAKER_13: That's right.
- 22:37SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 22:38SPEAKER_13: We're getting up north now, but not as much as south.
- 22:42SPEAKER_06: But again, the Philadelphia area in South Jersey.
- 22:46SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 22:46SPEAKER_06: So Greg, it sounds neat.
- 22:47SPEAKER_06: Now, what we want is we want you to uh stop at at every Wawa you stop at, we need a little recording.
- 22:55SPEAKER_06: Oh, absolutely, yes.
- 22:56SPEAKER_06: 60 seconds, 90 seconds, something like that.
- 22:59SPEAKER_06: And then we'll put them all together.
- 23:01SPEAKER_12: I mean, either I I'll need Jack to mail me her uh her camera, or we'll have to uh we'll have to look at the rise and run budget to see if maybe we can buy our own uh like DJ Pocket Osmo camera or something like that.
- 23:14SPEAKER_06: Stabilizer or yeah, yeah, exactly.
- 23:16SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 23:17SPEAKER_06: Oh, that sounds neat.
- 23:18SPEAKER_06: I heard you talking about it this morning.
- 23:20SPEAKER_06: It really sounds neat.
- 23:21SPEAKER_06: It sounds like a lot of fun.
- 23:22SPEAKER_12: Well, I I also appreciate I I did go back and scroll through the comments in the uh zoom chat bomb.
- 23:27SPEAKER_12: I'm so glad that you've already designated a future episode uh for to talk about this.
- 23:33SPEAKER_12: And I are and I I saw the other person's comment about a crossover with Sunny in Philadelphia.
- 23:39SPEAKER_12: So if this is something that we do pursue, I already have the title for you.
- 23:43SPEAKER_06: So stay tuned.
- 23:44SPEAKER_06: Okay.
- 23:45SPEAKER_06: Oh, sounds like fun, Greg.
- 23:47SPEAKER_06: Definitely definitely try the coffee way before you run.
- 23:50SPEAKER_06: Oh, it's yeah, that that coffee thing's not happening.
- 23:53SPEAKER_06: If if if you're going this far in life, I thought I went along some.
- 23:56SPEAKER_06: I think I was 22 or 23 before I started drinking coffee.
- 24:00SPEAKER_12: But uh, I like the the advice that I got um from our buddy Greg Creel.
- 24:06SPEAKER_12: He recommended that I just take a coffee cup and get a small uh and just put hot chocolate in it.
- 24:12SPEAKER_12: Yeah, right.
- 24:13SPEAKER_12: And then no one's gonna know the difference.
- 24:15SPEAKER_12: So we we all don't now.
- 24:19SPEAKER_06: You may be violating the letter of the law, but not the spirit.
- 24:22SPEAKER_13: So I think your prize money goes right the door.
- 24:26SPEAKER_12: I don't think I'm finishing this one first, so I have nothing to worry about there.
- 24:32SPEAKER_06: Hey, I think it's a neat idea.
- 24:36SPEAKER_06: All right, uh that all started from training updates.
- 24:38SPEAKER_06: Any other training updates, friends?
- 24:41SPEAKER_06: I know I know it's hard to follow that.
- 24:44SPEAKER_13: I know.
- 24:44SPEAKER_13: I mean I I I resisted stopping at Curly's fries on the boardwalk for my boardwalk runs to grab a grab a bunch of grab some curly fries, but I I did not do that.
- 24:57SPEAKER_13: I just did my runs in the morning, came back and uh sat on the beach.
- 25:04SPEAKER_12: John, what you should have done is you should have gotten the fries because if because I have a speed workout built into this for you.
- 25:12SPEAKER_12: Get the fries.
- 25:14SPEAKER_12: The seagulls are then going to chase after you so that would make you run faster, and then you could do that in intervals.
- 25:21SPEAKER_12: So when you're down, when you're down the shore next year, do that because it's all the rage now.
- 25:26SPEAKER_12: When I did a um Father's Day weekend when I went down to Rehoboth for the day, um, some of the amusement games were was a stuffed seagull with a French fry in it.
- 25:36SPEAKER_12: Yeah.
- 25:37SPEAKER_12: So it would definitely happen for you.
- 25:39SPEAKER_13: Yeah.
- 25:40SPEAKER_13: Yeah.
- 25:40SPEAKER_13: Well, I I had a good seagull incident on the beach.
- 25:43SPEAKER_13: So I'm sitting there eating my sandwich, and all of a sudden the top of my sandwich somehow gets taken away from a seagull that dive bombed over my shoulder.
- 25:53SPEAKER_13: Oh my gosh.
- 25:54SPEAKER_13: Oh, they're amazing.
- 25:55SPEAKER_13: And took my sandwich away.
- 25:57SPEAKER_12: Such a weird move, John.
- 25:58SPEAKER_12: You've been going there for how many years?
- 26:00SPEAKER_12: You should you you should have had it like half wrapped in like tin foilers.
- 26:02SPEAKER_13: I did have half wrapped in tinfoil.
- 26:05SPEAKER_13: I it was this boom.
- 26:07SPEAKER_12: Yeah.
- 26:08SPEAKER_12: That's one impressive seagull, then.
- 26:09SPEAKER_06: Oh, there's a billboard about two miles from here, and the tagline is I don't even know what it's an ad for, but we're as fast as two seagulls fly fighting over a French fry.
- 26:19SPEAKER_06: So yeah, it's it's uh it is a problem at the beach or down the shore.
- 26:26SPEAKER_06: So there we go.
- 26:27SPEAKER_06: Under training, we have wahwa, we have seagulls.
- 26:31SPEAKER_06: Alicia, anything interesting?
- 26:36SPEAKER_08: Um not not to that nature, no.
- 26:42SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 26:43SPEAKER_06: I'll go back to uh I I like being dull when it comes to this point.
- 26:50SPEAKER_06: I've had too many instances in years where I had the exciting, yeah, I'm recovering from a knee replacement, yeah, I'm recovering from this surgery.
- 26:58SPEAKER_06: I ain't recovering from anything right now.
- 27:01SPEAKER_06: I am staying consistent, I am being consistently slow, but I am perfectly happy with that.
- 27:10SPEAKER_06: I've been doing my hill workouts.
- 27:13SPEAKER_06: I went out this morning despite the fact that the temp was, and I don't make this up, the temp was 84 and the dew point was 80 at 7 o'clock in the morning.
- 27:24SPEAKER_06: But just go slow.
- 27:27SPEAKER_06: Just go slowly and stay consistent and stay at it.
- 27:31SPEAKER_06: And it will pay off, my friends.
- 27:33SPEAKER_06: I promise you.
- 27:34SPEAKER_06: Many of you know this already.
- 27:36SPEAKER_06: Those of you who are getting into this, maybe for the first time, or just kind of new to all this running.
- 27:43SPEAKER_06: Staying consistent now is going to pay off for you.
- 27:45SPEAKER_06: You're gonna have a wonderful race weekend if you can stay consistent throughout the whole training period.
- 27:51SPEAKER_11: Caution runners, change of topic ahead.
- 27:55SPEAKER_06: Well, you know what I think I'm gonna do right now?
- 27:59SPEAKER_06: I think I'm gonna do something I haven't done for a couple of weeks, and that is turn to the microphone and ask, What would Alicia do?
- 28:12SPEAKER_08: Yeah, Bob.
- 28:13SPEAKER_08: So we can actually thank our friend Greg for this What Would Alicia do?
- 28:18SPEAKER_12: Is it Wawa related?
- 28:19SPEAKER_08: It is not Wawa related, but it is bird related.
- 28:23SPEAKER_12: Okay.
- 28:24SPEAKER_08: So a few weeks ago we were chatting um before we got on the podcast, and I don't even remember what I said, but Greg mentioned to me that his sister had this app called Merlin Bird ID.
- 28:36SPEAKER_08: Um, and he asked if I had this app.
- 28:39SPEAKER_08: And I said no.
- 28:40SPEAKER_08: And he was like, Well, it's like Pokemon Go, but you catch birds that you see out in the world.
- 28:48SPEAKER_08: And so after we got off the podcast that day, I downloaded and I was like, I'll look at it later.
- 28:54SPEAKER_08: And like I had talked about on the podcast, I had a long run the next day, and I was struggling a little bit on the run.
- 29:02SPEAKER_08: It was humid, it was hot.
- 29:04SPEAKER_08: Um, and I was going through the trails and I heard a bunch of birds, and I was like, hmm, let me pull out this app and see if I can find the birds.
- 29:12SPEAKER_08: And so I've really been loving this Merlin bird app.
- 29:17SPEAKER_08: You um you can have it listen to the birds around you and it will tell you what the birds are.
- 29:23SPEAKER_08: For myself, I like to be able to physically see the bird so that I can get it as my on my list of birds that I am collecting.
- 29:31SPEAKER_08: Um, but it's been a fun little way to get out the door and do some more miles, and it's all thanks to our friend Greg.
- 29:38SPEAKER_06: Cool.
- 29:39SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 29:40SPEAKER_06: Well, that that sounds like fun.
- 29:42SPEAKER_06: I'm glad you're enjoying that.
- 29:43unknown: Yeah.
- 29:44SPEAKER_08: It's something that I think it's on um Google Phones too.
- 29:47SPEAKER_08: So it's something anybody can do.
- 29:49SPEAKER_08: Um, I've always loved looking at the nature when I'm out and about, but now I can catch them.
- 29:57SPEAKER_08: So yeah.
- 29:58SPEAKER_06: Since you have no wawas in your area, you know, what else have you got today?
- 30:02SPEAKER_06: You got birds.
- 30:03SPEAKER_08: Right.
- 30:03SPEAKER_08: Now I got birds.
- 30:06SPEAKER_12: Now I wonder if you play Feed the Birds for Mary Poppins.
- 30:10SPEAKER_12: If that would like draw more birds to you.
- 30:13SPEAKER_08: Maybe.
- 30:13SPEAKER_12: And like maybe pull like a snow white situation where all the animals just start flocking over to you during your run.
- 30:19SPEAKER_08: Possibly.
- 30:20SPEAKER_08: I I did see quite a lot of bunnies that day, and I saw a deer.
- 30:25SPEAKER_08: So, I mean, there's other wildlife out there.
- 30:27SPEAKER_08: Maybe, maybe I will be the snow white of of the forest.
- 30:31SPEAKER_06: It was a good day.
- 30:32SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 30:33SPEAKER_06: All right.
- 30:34SPEAKER_06: Thanks, Alicia, because that's what Alicia would do.
- 30:38SPEAKER_11: Caution runners, the topic is about to change right now.
- 30:44SPEAKER_06: Friends, whether you're getting ready for your very first Run Disney race, or you're a seasoned veteran with multiple dopies, this week's guest has something for you.
- 30:56SPEAKER_06: Lisa Denoto Glasner has been a passionate member of the Run Disney community for years.
- 31:02SPEAKER_06: She's taken everything she's learned from race weekends and training to the friendships and the traditions that make these events so special, gathered it into a new book, The Run Disney Companion.
- 31:17SPEAKER_06: Lisa, welcome back.
- 31:20SPEAKER_06: We're glad you're here.
- 31:21SPEAKER_01: Thank you so much for having me back.
- 31:23SPEAKER_01: We were just talking, and I guess it's been four whole years.
- 31:26SPEAKER_01: I don't know how that happened.
- 31:27SPEAKER_06: But I would imagine that you celebrate it.
- 31:29SPEAKER_06: Do you celebrate it every July 28th, your last appearance?
- 31:32SPEAKER_07: That's the other thing that you brought to my attention, which I had no idea was that wildly enough, the last time was also on July 28th.
- 31:39SPEAKER_07: So from now on, if I hadn't been before, I will certainly be this will definitely be Rise and Run Pod Day for me going forward.
- 31:47SPEAKER_07: Whether we record or not, I will, I will celebrate.
- 31:50SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 31:51SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 31:51SPEAKER_06: Well, listen, we're not going to ask you to recap the last four years, but let's catch up a little bit because a lot of our friends are new to the podcast since that uh 2022 interview.
- 32:05SPEAKER_06: How about telling us a little bit about yourself and how running became a part of your life?
- 32:10SPEAKER_01: So yeah, gosh, what a big question.
- 32:12SPEAKER_01: Um, I think the, you know, the short answer is that, you know, like so many of us, I was not a runner.
- 32:18SPEAKER_07: I mean, I was into fitness and stuff, but I was not a runner growing up at all.
- 32:22SPEAKER_07: Um and I kind of found running late in life.
- 32:24SPEAKER_07: And again, like many of us, kind of during a difficult time in my life when I sort of needed it and it and it served me really well.
- 32:31SPEAKER_07: Um, and you know, when that time passed, and there was some illnesses in the family and stuff that I was getting through.
- 32:37SPEAKER_07: Um, but when that time passed, I kind of had noticed that running was serving me more generally and maybe just kind of making me a better person in general and also opening up some doors to other possibilities in my life.
- 32:49SPEAKER_01: Um, and so, you know, when that time kind of passed or lifted, I kept running and um somewhere along the way found Run Disney, which we'll talk about, I'm sure.
- 32:57SPEAKER_01: But yeah, like so many of us, like especially these days, I think I I kind of came to running and came to Disney, you know, as an adult.
- 33:11SPEAKER_07: So the very first one, which was tied to all of that, was the Princess Half Marathon in 2016.
- 33:18SPEAKER_07: I just did that standalone race.
- 33:19SPEAKER_07: Um, it was kind of set on a meaningful day for me, and um, the period of training leading up to it was, you know, it gave me a little bit of a purpose and distraction that I needed at the time.
- 33:29SPEAKER_07: And um, and yeah, that the very first one was the Princess 2016 half marathon.
- 33:34SPEAKER_06: And since then, you've gone on to about a hundred Run Disney races?
- 33:39SPEAKER_07: I hit a hundred, which I was really glad I happened to sit down and do the math right beforehand, or it would have just completely missed me.
- 33:45SPEAKER_07: Um, but it was during Wine and Dine last year.
- 33:47SPEAKER_07: I hit my that's awesome.
- 33:50SPEAKER_06: That's awesome.
- 33:51SPEAKER_06: Because uh a couple of us here started, a bunch of us here started in 2016.
- 33:56SPEAKER_06: But we don't have a hundred.
- 33:58SPEAKER_07: Well, I live like fifty, I live like a stone throw from Cinderella Castle and a good maybe 15 minutes from the Epcot parking lot.
- 34:04SPEAKER_07: So they're literally local races, you know.
- 34:06SPEAKER_07: So I feel a little silly not running them.
- 34:09SPEAKER_06: I've got a hundred on the horizon, but it's it's still out there just a little bit.
- 34:12SPEAKER_06: When did you realize you were hooked?
- 34:14SPEAKER_07: I mean, pretty much right away.
- 34:16SPEAKER_07: I like to joke that they're like potato chips and you can't have just one.
- 34:20SPEAKER_07: Um but yeah, I think, you know, the princess, princess was was more of a standalone for me.
- 34:25SPEAKER_07: I I was I was pretty hooked, I think, from the get-go.
- 34:29SPEAKER_07: I think like that summer, even I was apparently somebody just read me an email that I wrote that summer saying that I was thinking of you know, ideally working for them in the future, which is very funny looking back on.
- 34:40SPEAKER_07: Um, so yeah, I guess I got the bug pretty much right away.
- 34:43SPEAKER_07: And then I came back the next season for the next set of races, wine and dine, and ran all three.
- 34:50SPEAKER_07: So if I didn't have it at Princess, I certainly had it by then.
- 34:52SPEAKER_07: Because I think it's a different experience when you're doing all of them and you're kind of just enmeshed in it for a full weekend with the community and feeling the delirium of the, you know, the consecutive race mornings.
- 35:03SPEAKER_07: So I certainly got the bug at Princess.
- 35:06SPEAKER_07: And if I hadn't completely gotten it at that point, I certainly had by wine and dine.
- 35:11SPEAKER_06: I agree.
- 35:12SPEAKER_06: I think a lot of our friends who have experience at Disney would say the same thing.
- 35:17SPEAKER_06: It it hits you pretty quick, sometimes even in the middle of that first race.
- 35:22SPEAKER_07: Oh, yeah, for sure.
- 35:24SPEAKER_12: Lisa, having followed you on Instagram for for many, many years and hearing you on WDW with uh our buddy Lou Mangello, you know, just a staple in in the Disney community.
- 35:37SPEAKER_12: I know you get that itch not only for running and run Disney, but lots of different creative ideas.
- 35:44SPEAKER_12: And you know, and we can talk about you know some of your other business ventures, you know, uh later, you know, later on in the episode, but let's transition now to this new itch of writing the book.
- 35:55SPEAKER_12: And you know, so you have the Run Disney Companion, it's extremely thorough.
- 36:00SPEAKER_12: I mean, we we all loved you know paging through it.
- 36:03SPEAKER_12: Um, you know, it provides a lot of information to our friends who are brand new to you know the the Run Disney community.
- 36:11SPEAKER_12: I mean, heck, I'm gonna try and send a copy to my cousin who's doing his first 5k uh during wine and dine.
- 36:17SPEAKER_12: But I feel like you know the book also applies to you know people who, you know, like all of us, have finished multiple Run Disney race weekends, maybe not a hundred, but you know, a lot of us.
- 36:27SPEAKER_12: But at what point to you, Lisa, were we like, we need this for the community and future members of the Run Disney community?
- 36:37SPEAKER_07: I mean, I think we all kind of knew we needed it.
- 36:40SPEAKER_07: It's wild to me that this didn't exist.
- 36:43SPEAKER_07: Like there's so many Disney guides and Disney Cruise guides and like all the things.
- 36:48SPEAKER_07: And I guess it's a reminder that this is all a lot newer than we sometimes remember.
- 36:53SPEAKER_07: Like in writing, there's a chapter just on the history of Run Disney in the book.
- 36:56SPEAKER_07: And and first of all, and that and like that didn't really exist.
- 37:00SPEAKER_07: Like the in the amount of research and like asterisks, especially in the early days, that I have in that chapter, like the degree, it fascinated me that like the history didn't exist in one place to that extent.
- 37:14SPEAKER_07: Um, so yeah, I mean, I I think over the years of putting, you know, if you follow me on Instagram or if you're on my site, The Castle Run et al or have been over the years, it's kind of become a hub, just because I am kind of a type A personality and I've always kind of gathered all the information on the races and I used to do that for myself.
- 37:36SPEAKER_07: And then I started to share it on the website and on Instagram over the years.
- 37:40SPEAKER_07: So it's sort of become a hub for kind of the weekend to weekend races.
- 37:45SPEAKER_07: And I think what became overwhelmingly obvious to me as I was doing this over the years was that so much of the information was evergreen and didn't exist in one place.
- 37:55SPEAKER_07: And even if there are sort of, you know, a tweaked policy here and there, you know, it there was, you know, there was so much opportunity to kind of put it all between two covers for, you know, when we'll talk about the audiences as well, but put it all between two covers for this influx of newcomers that were getting to Run Disney or or Run Disney hopefuls who might kind of daydream about doing the races or kind of see on social, you know, the the races and think that it would be such a cool experience, but uh but be kind of intimidated by both the running aspect of it and the logistical aspect of it.
- 38:32SPEAKER_07: Um so I think, you know, realizing that that didn't exist and kind of that I had I was very much in a position to write it, having done the guides over the years, you know, it I think we all kind of knew we needed it.
- 38:46SPEAKER_07: And I think, you know, it had been on my to-do list for a little while and then come this spring.
- 38:51SPEAKER_07: I was like, you know what?
- 38:52SPEAKER_07: If the time's not gonna find me, I'm gonna find the time.
- 38:54SPEAKER_07: And I just finally got it done.
- 38:56SPEAKER_06: Ironically, Lisa, our guest the last couple of weeks was John Yuce.
- 39:01SPEAKER_06: And John went over the history of Run Disney kind of as an insider's perspective, but from uh point to point to race to race, your book's more thorough than and that's that's fine.
- 39:16SPEAKER_06: The two different approaches, but I sure found it interesting to uh well to get both approaches, really.
- 39:22SPEAKER_07: Well, and you couldn't, I mean, you can't you couldn't really like in a conversational way cover like in that level of detail because I did try to kind of do the the through line of it all, kind of obviously like with the initial like talks around even having a marathon in the 80s going into the 90s, and then obviously having the first marathon, and then sort of how you know, Minnie's race and a half, like sort of inspired princess and like the the 10K in the fall that sort of became or not became directly, but sort of you know became Weinendein.
- 39:54SPEAKER_07: Um, you know, there's there's like an interesting throughway through all of it that kind of threads the needle all together.
- 39:59SPEAKER_07: And like I touched on just now, and like I say in the intro to that chapter, it's cool to see the history, but I think it's also very inviting to remember just how new it all is.
- 40:11SPEAKER_07: Because if you're looking in from the outside, it's like, oh gosh, this is they've been going on forever.
- 40:16SPEAKER_07: It's an institution.
- 40:17SPEAKER_07: There's like this community that's like so well formed, and you kind of feel like you're looking in from the outside at this thing that's existed forever.
- 40:25SPEAKER_07: And it's really quite new.
- 40:26SPEAKER_07: I mean, the first dopey was in 2014.
- 40:29SPEAKER_07: Um, which, you know, I guess depending on your age is longer and not so long ago.
- 40:33SPEAKER_07: But to me, 2014, you know, my first dopey was my first dopey was 2018, you know.
- 40:38SPEAKER_07: So when I I know like when I ran Dopey, I felt like it was this institution that I was like coming into.
- 40:43SPEAKER_07: And it had only been around for like four years at that point.
- 40:46SPEAKER_07: So, um, so yeah, I think the history in itself is cool to have all in one place.
- 40:50SPEAKER_07: And then just the reminder of like what a new thing, especially in its current like crazy form, um, run Disney is.
- 40:58SPEAKER_06: I like the way you pointed out that when Disney separated the half and the full so that they could occur on different days, it gave birth to the phrase just the marathon.
- 41:09SPEAKER_07: Yeah, I say that in the book.
- 41:10SPEAKER_07: Yeah, the first, um yeah, it was 2006, right?
- 41:13SPEAKER_07: They they finally because it used to be when they originally did it, they had the half and the full on the same day.
- 41:18SPEAKER_07: So you can choose one or the other.
- 41:19SPEAKER_07: And then that was the the booth, the birth of Goofy's race and a half um back then.
- 41:24SPEAKER_07: And yeah, that was I'm I I've I feel like that has to be, right?
- 41:28SPEAKER_07: That has to be anybody ever uttered the phrase just the marriage.
- 41:31SPEAKER_06: Where else would that be?
- 41:32SPEAKER_06: Well, that's like and and as John told us when they talked about having all four races at once, because I already had Goofy.
- 41:38SPEAKER_06: And John said, well, that would just be dopey.
- 41:40SPEAKER_06: And he does he kind of backed off whether or not he actually named it, but we're giving him credit.
- 41:45SPEAKER_06: We don't care.
- 41:46SPEAKER_07: Yeah, I've I have a I have a podiatrist that I've had to see over the years for various reasons, and he's been the local for a very long time and treats a lot of Run Disney people, and he like laments.
- 41:55SPEAKER_07: See that he's like, he's like, Yeah, we thought you guys were crazy with Tope, and then they announced uh with Goofy, and then they announced Tope, and he just like put his head in his hands because he's like the doctor, the doctor treated us all.
- 42:06SPEAKER_13: He just gets another boat out of the whole issue.
- 42:09SPEAKER_13: Yeah, I'm sure.
- 42:12SPEAKER_13: Okay, Lisa.
- 42:13SPEAKER_13: So uh when you were writing this book, what audience did you uh picture reading this book?
- 42:18SPEAKER_07: So it's two audiences, right?
- 42:20SPEAKER_07: Which is like the worst thing.
- 42:21SPEAKER_07: You're never supposed to have two audiences.
- 42:22SPEAKER_07: You're supposed to pick an audience and serve them.
- 42:24SPEAKER_07: But it couldn't not have two audiences because the the logistical, like the the reason for the book, so sort of the the the rational, like literal reason for the book, and and absolutely it it is, is a logistical guide to kind of hold your hand from start to finish.
- 42:40SPEAKER_07: From like we talked about the history, but like the, you know, it's how to pick which race you want to run and then how to register, and then how to pick a training plan, and like how to do the training plan and like figure out your costume and your fuel.
- 42:52SPEAKER_07: And, you know, it's like we're 10 chapters in before we even get to the race.
- 42:56SPEAKER_07: Um, so it, you know, and then it takes you onto the finish line and the emotional come down after that and what the challenges are.
- 43:02SPEAKER_07: Like it, it literally, like, you know, there's there's the weekend specific logistics that'll kind of come up on my website for each weekend.
- 43:10SPEAKER_07: But for the most part, it really does kind of hold your hand from start to finish if you're a newcomer to Run Disney or somebody who's just aspirational in that way and kind of to make it feel doable and and make it feel um, you know, not so overwhelming if you're coming in from the start.
- 43:26SPEAKER_07: So the book between two covers, and especially the the sort of middle of the book, is um is for those people.
- 43:33SPEAKER_07: But at the same time, the good book couldn't not be for us, you know.
- 43:37SPEAKER_07: And when I say us, I just mean like the the veteran, and I don't mean to be exclusionary about that, but like the the community, the and and the book, you know, it in it at its most practical, it's for the newcomer, you know, but the heart of the book is really just a love letter to this community from, you know, somebody who just was hoping to give a voice to like what we love about this sport.
- 43:58SPEAKER_07: And so the beginning of the book where I kind Of talk about my backstory and how I found it, mainly in a way to kind of like make us all feel like, you know, we all have some version of that story, right?
- 44:07SPEAKER_07: Um, and and the history of the races and why they're so special.
- 44:11SPEAKER_07: Um, and then the back of the book where like the real heart is, which it's like the dozen life lessons that come, you know, from from a life of distance running, which is kind of like the everything I ever needed to know I learned in kindergarten, but it's running instead of kindergarten.
- 44:26SPEAKER_07: Um, it's that's kind of my take on that.
- 44:28SPEAKER_07: And that I would love to make a book in itself one day.
- 44:31SPEAKER_07: But um, but you know, that that's where it stands right now.
- 44:33SPEAKER_07: And um, and the heart of the book is sort of that that front and back matter that sort of gives a voice to us veterans.
- 44:40SPEAKER_06: Beautifully said.
- 44:41SPEAKER_06: Really comes through too.
- 44:43SPEAKER_07: Thank you.
- 44:44SPEAKER_12: Lisa, from the span of concept in your brain to holding it in your hands, anything surprise you during the course of the whole journey?
- 44:55SPEAKER_07: So I shouldn't have been surprised by it, but I think like the amount of community love and support and help that I got along the way.
- 45:06SPEAKER_07: Like I shouldn't have been surprised, right?
- 45:07SPEAKER_07: Because it's the Run Disney community and these people are amazing.
- 45:09SPEAKER_07: Like we're there, it's like an amazing group of people.
- 45:12SPEAKER_07: But, you know, the when like the few times along the way where I would put out a call for like pictures or, you know, and like people would were like going through their albums and going back and forth, and like I had to get permissions from everybody to use the pictures.
- 45:25SPEAKER_07: So they were like helping me track down all the different people in their groups.
- 45:28SPEAKER_07: And I I mean, I I could go on and on, but I I think um, you know, it shouldn't be surprising to me because these are we're just like it's an amazing group of people.
- 45:38SPEAKER_07: But I think like the amount of love and support that and just like excitement about like the that this book was coming was really, really awesome to see.
- 45:47SPEAKER_07: And I and I think it's in part just because I'm I'm such an introverted person that like as much as I love the community, like I'm just on the quieter end of it.
- 45:56SPEAKER_07: It's just who I am.
- 45:56SPEAKER_07: Like I'm I'm friends with all of the people, but I'm sort of not the person at the party, you know, who's like dancing at the wine and dine after party or whatever.
- 46:04SPEAKER_07: But so I think I tend to be a little bit more introverted and um and like coming into taking the role of writing this book was um, you know, an interesting undertaking in that way.
- 46:15SPEAKER_07: And so seeing like the amount of love and support over the course of writing the book.
- 46:20SPEAKER_07: And then when I kind of did the main announcement, like if you look at those Instagram threads, like again, like the love and support that's come out has been absolutely overwhelming.
- 46:28SPEAKER_08: I think that's a a great testament to our Run Disney community.
- 46:31SPEAKER_08: I mean, we talk about that on a week-to-week basis of how how tight-knit we are, but also how welcoming we are for newcomers.
- 46:40SPEAKER_08: I'm wondering, is there anything that you found while writing this that the chapters were harder to write than other ones?
- 46:49SPEAKER_07: So, I mean, the logistical stuff was easy.
- 46:51SPEAKER_07: That was just sort of sort of like writing the stuff I knew and like, you know, organizing that kind of thing is sort of in my wheelhouse.
- 46:58SPEAKER_07: So um, you know, that that stuff was sort of just scheduling the writing and getting it done.
- 47:02SPEAKER_07: Um, the two chapters that would jump out at me for that were like, first of all, the history chapter, which was incredibly difficult to put together.
- 47:10SPEAKER_07: And and I definitely like heavily asterisk it in the beginning.
- 47:14SPEAKER_07: Like, I think I'm pretty comfortable with like everything that I put together, but like I wouldn't be incredibly surprised if like the track shack folks read it and were like, eh, this one point needed to do it, you know, because they were there and and I wasn't.
- 47:25SPEAKER_07: And there's really not, you know, it was kind of pre-mega social media and and coverage of those things.
- 47:31SPEAKER_07: So um, I mean, that they didn't even have like ch timed chips, like they weren't even electronic chips initially on the race bib.
- 47:37SPEAKER_07: So it's it's even hard.
- 47:38SPEAKER_07: There's even conflicting information on like who holds the records and like who originally set the records, especially on the the women's side.
- 47:45SPEAKER_07: Um, so that and and kind of finding like the thread through it all that kind of weaves it all together um was a like a huge undertaking.
- 47:54SPEAKER_07: And you know, I kind of like thought I had it done and then I sat down again and I found so the history chapter, just from like a technical perspective and a research perspective, like it probably took me longer, far and away, than anything else in the book.
- 48:08SPEAKER_07: Um, and for that reason, I'm I'm really, really happy that I decided to take it on because like having having put it together, I think was a really valuable exercise.
- 48:18SPEAKER_07: Um, and then it, you know, on kind of for the polar opposite reason, you know, the last chapter of the book, which is the dozen lessons learned from a lifetime of distance running.
- 48:28SPEAKER_07: I think in part just because that's been like perking in my brain for so long, like some version of that has been like perking in my mind as I've been doing the races for so long.
- 48:38SPEAKER_07: And um, and I, and I really wanted to get it right.
- 48:42SPEAKER_07: Um, and I and I very much needed to be like in the right frame of mind to take on that chapter.
- 48:49SPEAKER_07: And so for that reason, like it was it was the it was actually the last chapter that I wrote because I was like, I kind of I kind of wanted to make sure I was in a kind of otherwise quiet headspace to sit down with and do justice to that chapter.
- 49:01SPEAKER_07: So for polar opposite reasons, I'd say those two.
- 49:04SPEAKER_08: All right, Lisa.
- 49:05SPEAKER_08: Instead of asking for a chapter by chapter walkthrough, let's cut to the heart and soul of what the Run Disney Companion book is about.
- 49:13SPEAKER_08: What is one piece of advice for first-time runners that is almost always overlooked?
- 49:20SPEAKER_07: So, I mean, two things probably stand out to me there.
- 49:24SPEAKER_07: Um, the the first is like train hard because it's a real race.
- 49:29SPEAKER_07: Like, do yourself the honor of of taking the training seriously because that's kind of that's kind of the whole point anyway.
- 49:37SPEAKER_07: Like I think you realize after you've done a few that it's it's it's corny, but like it's the journey, not the finish line is like really it's really a true thing when it comes to these races.
- 49:47SPEAKER_07: Um, and you know, the metal and the finish line is just sort of like the punch on like the the period on a very long, meaningful sentence, which is your training where all of the sort of personal growth and self-develop, like all of the things kind of come from that.
- 50:00SPEAKER_07: So, you know, and and they are real races, like whether it's your first 5K and that's a challenging distance for you, or you're taking on Dopey for the first time, like these are real races.
- 50:11SPEAKER_07: Like there's castles and characters and silliness, and you know, you see us posing in with Mickey Mouse and tutos, but it's it, but there's still a lot of miles in between those pictures that you see on Instagram.
- 50:22SPEAKER_07: Um, and so I would, you know, absolutely train for them like they're real races.
- 50:26SPEAKER_07: But that being said, like once you get to the start line, kind of let it go and have fun.
- 50:32SPEAKER_07: So like take it seriously up until the start line and then just enjoy yourself.
- 50:36SPEAKER_07: And then other than that, I would just say sleep, sleep, sleep, sleep, sleep, sleep.
- 50:41SPEAKER_07: It's the it's the one thing, like, especially if you're coming here like on vacation with family who's not running.
- 50:48SPEAKER_07: It's it's like it's so easy to derail.
- 50:50SPEAKER_07: You cannot out-gel, you know, right four nights worth of terrible sleep going into a marathon as a part of Dopey.
- 50:57SPEAKER_07: Um, and it affects everything.
- 50:59SPEAKER_07: It affects your recovery and your mood and your ability to like regulate temperature, and it it affects all of the things.
- 51:06SPEAKER_07: So, you know, more than anything else, I would try to make sure that you're give yourself a good sleep schedule with the early wakeups.
- 51:12SPEAKER_06: There's an expression I haven't heard before.
- 51:14SPEAKER_06: You can't out gel that.
- 51:16SPEAKER_06: I like it.
- 51:17SPEAKER_06: You can't put that on a t-shirt.
- 51:21SPEAKER_13: Okay, was there any misconceptions about Run Disney that you wanted to correct or let people know about?
- 51:27SPEAKER_07: I mean, broken record, but I think just reiterating like the it's it's easy to kind of see Run Disney on social media and think that it's like all characters and castles and and costumes, and it absolutely is all of those things, but it's also real races.
- 51:42SPEAKER_07: Um, you know, sometimes I'll like I'll you know, I'll share on Facebook or on Instagram or whatever, like, you know, these pictures of me kind of you know in a in a tutu posing with Goofy on like in front of a castle or something.
- 51:54SPEAKER_07: And I think like, what do these people who have known me like in other parts of my life think when they're seeing these things?
- 52:00SPEAKER_07: Um because it looks it looks kind of ridiculous.
- 52:02SPEAKER_07: And you kind of just do need to embrace the ridiculousness and be a joiner.
- 52:06SPEAKER_04: Heck yeah.
- 52:07SPEAKER_07: Yeah, I mean you you do.
- 52:09SPEAKER_07: But but at the same time, like they're races, like they're real races.
- 52:12SPEAKER_07: Like we are, like we are running a marathon.
- 52:14SPEAKER_07: We are like dopey is a crazy undertaking, and there's really not much else like it in the endurance world.
- 52:20SPEAKER_07: Like to wake up at, you know, 1:30, 2 o'clock in the morning, four days in a row, in the midst of a vacation, oftentimes like sleeping in an un you know, a hotel bed with like a you know, for a 5K, a 10K, a half marathon, and then when that's all done, wake up for the last morning and on a marathon.
- 52:38SPEAKER_07: I mean, it's it's wild.
- 52:39SPEAKER_07: Like it's they're absolutely real races.
- 52:42SPEAKER_07: And so I think, you know, I think that the misconception from the outside, you know, for people registering sometimes too, but also people just looking at it from the outside is that um, you know, you see all of the silliness, which is a thousand percent a part of it, but you kind of forget the fact that there are real miles in between.
- 53:00SPEAKER_13: Yeah, it's it's easy.
- 53:02SPEAKER_13: It looks easy on social media, right?
- 53:04SPEAKER_07: Yeah, like like anything.
- 53:05SPEAKER_07: I mean, it's a highlight reel, right?
- 53:07SPEAKER_07: So you're not seeing like the long road.
- 53:09SPEAKER_07: I mean, and then those are fun too.
- 53:10SPEAKER_07: Like Disney makes it all cool.
- 53:12SPEAKER_07: Like there's, you know, DJs and marching bands and the whole, and they're they're wonderful.
- 53:17SPEAKER_07: And like I love the road miles too, but like there's a lot of road miles in between those those parks.
- 53:22SPEAKER_07: Um, you know, and you're not seeing like, you know, the seven miles that you're running down World Drive.
- 53:27SPEAKER_12: Well, I was gonna say maybe for volume two of the book, because this was something that we talked about with with John Hughes a bunch, is you know, maybe instead of you and a tutu with Goofy in front of Cinderella's castle, it can be you and a tutu in front of the sewage treatment plant on Bear Road.
- 53:42SPEAKER_12: And then that would help you know, people you know get give a sense of of the true Run Disney that you know that we don't, yeah, we don't see in the parks.
- 53:48SPEAKER_07: But yeah, it'll have to be a scratch and sniff.
- 53:51SPEAKER_07: Exactly.
- 53:53SPEAKER_12: But you know, Lisa, you know, the one thing that you know we wanted to talk about next that that was such a vital part of the book, and and you have already waxed poetic about it several times already in this interview, is you know, you address the Run Disney community and the love for it so much throughout all facets um of this book.
- 54:14SPEAKER_12: Why was that so important for you to include?
- 54:17SPEAKER_07: I mean, it's the people.
- 54:18SPEAKER_07: Like it just is.
- 54:19SPEAKER_07: And like, and it speaks volumes that to me, I mean, I've I've talked a lot about my introversion here and on other podcasts in the last week, but and we all laugh about it.
- 54:28SPEAKER_07: But like, even for me, like it's you know, and the I mean, even for me, but like it, you know, it just proved like we're social beings, you know, and to feel like you belong and to feel like you're a part of something is such an important thing.
- 54:40SPEAKER_07: And I think Run Disney just checks that box for so many of us in such a powerful way.
- 54:45SPEAKER_07: And it's unlike any other sort of race event or community, not to, you know, and and every race community is is special and and important in its own way, but you know, we have a season.
- 54:55SPEAKER_07: We have a season of races that we all come together for, you know, at this point, even you know, it used to be Disneyland too, but you know, still, you know, four times a year in the context of trips, you know, oftentimes taking on these crazy challenges together, like nobody knows you better than the people standing around you in corral, like waiting to start cross the start line of the marathon on the fourth day of Dopey.
- 55:18SPEAKER_07: Um, you know, and and this, and and I think that, you know, the lessons that come along with distance running um, you know, are so powerful in themselves.
- 55:28SPEAKER_07: So you've got it's like those kinds of people.
- 55:30SPEAKER_07: It's the people who have learned those lessons.
- 55:32SPEAKER_07: It's the people who have learned that like you're only running against yourself.
- 55:36SPEAKER_07: It's the people who have learned that like you have no idea what anybody else is carrying because you know what you're carrying and you can, you know, it's the people who celebrate the final finisher with as much, if not more fanfare than the person who wins.
- 55:49SPEAKER_07: Like that's the people we're talking about.
- 55:51SPEAKER_07: And, you know, I said this, you know, earlier in the week, but you know, I truly believe that, you know, you could take those same people and put them on the West Orange Trail, which is our local like 20 mile running trail, and we'd be like 90% of the way there.
- 56:07SPEAKER_07: Like just with the people, not with the characters or the castles or the parks or the, you know, all the things.
- 56:12SPEAKER_07: Like you could just take those people and put them anywhere and let them run together.
- 56:18SPEAKER_07: And we would have like most of the experience just based on that.
- 56:22SPEAKER_07: And, you know, there's nothing, you know, there's nothing more powerful than that.
- 56:27SPEAKER_07: And just this whole ecosystem that's grown around it from the Facebook groups to people like you who have, you know, these podcasts that, you know, we all kind of gather around and listen to when we miss, you know, miss our time on the courses like this time of year when we're not running for the the races together, you know, and and the virtuals that have gotten so so big just because I think we all just kind of want a touch point in the off season.
- 56:49SPEAKER_07: Um, you know, the it's it's it's the people.
- 56:52SPEAKER_07: It's you know, it just is.
- 56:54SPEAKER_06: Yeah, this is a time between seasons where I start missing my friends and start counting down until we're getting back.
- 57:02SPEAKER_06: Now, veteran runners.
- 57:05SPEAKER_06: You've got over a hundred races, I've got close to eighty.
- 57:09SPEAKER_06: What chapters or sections, I have my own opinion on this, do you think the veteran runners will appreciate most in your book?
- 57:16SPEAKER_07: The the I mean, that's really the front and the back of the book.
- 57:19SPEAKER_07: So the yeah, I mean, I think that the first chapter of the book is my backstory.
- 57:24SPEAKER_07: And I and I think, like I said before, I think, you know, I didn't really I didn't tell it to take a chapter up on myself.
- 57:30SPEAKER_07: I more told it just to sort of say, you know, we all have some version of this.
- 57:34SPEAKER_07: And I think, you know, any veteran could read, you know, any sort of adult distance runner could read that chapter of the book and just know they have like a soul sister out there.
- 57:46SPEAKER_07: Yeah, because I've spent through it too.
- 57:49SPEAKER_07: Um, and just the fact that they, you know, and obviously the history section having put that together, but you know, all of that said and done.
- 57:54SPEAKER_07: I mean, I think the last chapter of the book is to me it, to me, the like I said, the last chapter of the book is the heart of the book.
- 58:00SPEAKER_07: The dozen lessons learned from, you know, a dozen years of distance running um or more is, you know, it all any of us could have written that chapter of the book or some version of that chapter of the book.
- 58:12SPEAKER_07: I'm sure anyone could, any of us could like could add to what I've written.
- 58:15SPEAKER_07: Um, and just to be able to give a voice to that.
- 58:19SPEAKER_07: Um do you agree?
- 58:21SPEAKER_07: You said you had an opinion.
- 58:22SPEAKER_06: Those are my picks, the history section and the last and the last part.
- 58:25SPEAKER_06: Yep.
- 58:25SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 58:26SPEAKER_06: I would agree.
- 58:26SPEAKER_06: Yeah, for sure.
- 58:27SPEAKER_06: Completely thank you.
- 58:28SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 58:28SPEAKER_13: So with Run Disney races, what do you think makes people come back year after year for all these races?
- 58:35SPEAKER_07: I mean, I'm a broken record.
- 58:36SPEAKER_07: It's the people.
- 58:37SPEAKER_07: I mean, it is the people.
- 58:38SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 58:38SPEAKER_07: I mean, it's I mean, it's just that's what the answer, it's what the answer is gonna be to, you know, again and again.
- 58:44SPEAKER_07: Like you, you, I mean, I think maybe your first race or two, you're coming like to, you know, and you still are like the the characters and the tutus and the castle and the parks and the energy, the marching bands.
- 58:56SPEAKER_07: Like Disney does what they do beautifully.
- 58:58SPEAKER_07: Like everything that Disney does right, they do writer at Run Disney, you know, crowd control and organization.
- 59:04SPEAKER_07: And like they just, they just do, they do those, they are the masters of those things.
- 59:09SPEAKER_07: And so, you know, Run Disney events, you know, are are right in all the same ways.
- 59:15SPEAKER_07: Um, and they they just do it really, really well.
- 59:17SPEAKER_07: And maybe it's a testament to how well they do it that it's not even on the radar at a certain point because they're just managing things so well in the background that you're not realizing all of the things that need to be managed.
- 59:26SPEAKER_07: Um, and you can just enjoy yourself and and the parks.
- 59:28SPEAKER_07: But but yeah, it's it's it's the people.
- 59:30SPEAKER_07: Like it's and I think um I think in a way, COVID was made that that much stronger because I think we realized how fragile it all was.
- 59:42SPEAKER_07: I think, you know, I'm not gonna say we took it for granted before that, because I don't think we ever took it for granted.
- 59:46SPEAKER_07: But I think just seeing like how it could be taken away made us like celebrate so much more when it came back.
- 59:55SPEAKER_07: So, you know, as as much as we all were loving this community and a part of it going into 2019, I think like coming out of the pandemic, those first races when we all came together again, like the spirit of that was so powerful and we were all so happy.
- 1:00:10SPEAKER_07: And I think it's that's still kind of there.
- 1:00:13SPEAKER_07: I think there's still like that that same sort of gratitude has carried into the years since.
- 1:00:19SPEAKER_08: All right, Lisa.
- 1:00:20SPEAKER_08: So let's talk about that community.
- 1:00:21SPEAKER_08: You had spoken to that you're kind of an introvert.
- 1:00:25SPEAKER_08: So if we have listeners that are brand new to Run Disney that are feeling kind of skeptical about being part of this community, what advice would you give to them to come with open arms and and just enjoy it?
- 1:00:43SPEAKER_07: I I think like it's it's whatever you want it to be.
- 1:00:46SPEAKER_07: You know, the races are whatever you want them to be.
- 1:00:48SPEAKER_07: If you, if you want, I I do, you know, I I have tons of friends on the course, but I usually run alone.
- 1:00:54SPEAKER_07: I do most of my training runs alone, and I usually do my runs on the course alone.
- 1:00:57SPEAKER_07: I'm with my friends, like we're together, but I'm not like tied to them at the, you know, and running is by its nature, you know, it's we're social beings, but running is by its nature a very solitary sport in a lot of ways.
- 1:01:08SPEAKER_07: Um, and so, you know, I think it's it's whatever you want it to be.
- 1:01:12SPEAKER_07: If you're not a costume person, like you don't like there's as many people not in costume as in costume.
- 1:01:18SPEAKER_07: Like you might leave the race a little bit more inspired to do something next time.
- 1:01:24SPEAKER_07: But like if you just kind of want to people watch and like see everybody else's cool costumes, like you can come and do that.
- 1:01:30SPEAKER_07: If you want to PR, there's pretty good conditions for PRs a lot of the time.
- 1:01:35SPEAKER_07: Like weather permitting, like these courses are flat, like especially around marathon weekend, it can be nice and chilly outside.
- 1:01:42SPEAKER_07: And you know, you don't know what the universe is going to serve up that day.
- 1:01:45SPEAKER_07: But if you, you know, if you want to spend the whole time chilling with the characters, you can chill with the characters.
- 1:01:49SPEAKER_07: If you want to spend the whole time like flying down the course and trying to PR, you can do that too.
- 1:01:53SPEAKER_07: And and the same thing goes for, you know, how much you kind of want to be or not be around, you know, all of the people that surround you.
- 1:02:01SPEAKER_07: Like, I think that, you know, what I've learned over the years, and it's sort of taken me some time myself to realize is that like they'll accept you for who you are.
- 1:02:10SPEAKER_07: Like, you don't need to be like the person in the 60-person group to be loved by this community.
- 1:02:16SPEAKER_07: You can, you can just you can be exactly who you are and have one-on-one conversations, or you can kind of slip in, you know, right before the race and run your race and kind of slip back out to your car afterwards if that's how you're feeling that day.
- 1:02:29SPEAKER_07: Like it just make it what you want it to be, like just as should be most of life, right?
- 1:02:35SPEAKER_07: But but I think this it applies that much, you know, more so to these races, and you know, and whether it's about how much you want to hang out with other people or whether you want to dress up in a costume or like whether you want to try to PR or just enjoy your time on the course, like just whatever feels right that day is what you should do.
- 1:02:52SPEAKER_07: And, you know, it's just another one of those life lessons that like nobody's as worried about you as you think they are.
- 1:02:58SPEAKER_07: Like nobody's the only person worried about you at the end of the day is you.
- 1:03:02SPEAKER_07: You're not keeping anybody else up, and everybody else is very much occupied with their own race and their own issues and their own stuff, and um, you know, and and just go in and enjoy it.
- 1:03:12SPEAKER_07: And if anything about what we're talking about sounds cool to you, then give it a try.
- 1:03:16SPEAKER_07: Like there's no reason not to.
- 1:03:17SPEAKER_12: Yeah, I think we would all agree here uh during this interview, you know, that that the Walt Disney company, you know, they are master storytellers, and I and we all have our own story.
- 1:03:27SPEAKER_12: I mean, Lisa, you do a wonderful job of highlighting your story and how it impacted you to get into running and then which then led you to Run Disney.
- 1:03:40SPEAKER_12: Obviously, I don't want to spoil that because we want people to go out and get the book and and and read it for themselves.
- 1:03:45SPEAKER_12: But outside of your personal story that led you to Run Disney over your course of you know 100 races now, is there a story that you've witnessed that like perfectly captures the essence of Run Disney?
- 1:04:01SPEAKER_07: Yeah, that's such a good question.
- 1:04:03SPEAKER_07: And I'm sure there's so many, but the first one that comes to mind, like for sure, is um this incredible family in the Boyles, um, who I actually know pretty, you know, very well.
- 1:04:15SPEAKER_07: Um the the mother and father, the father is a runner, um Dan Boyle and Christine is the mother.
- 1:04:23SPEAKER_07: And um, they had a a a daughter who had a lot of challenges.
- 1:04:27SPEAKER_07: And um they found they they had found out at one point when she was around 15 years old that there were some health concerns that were gonna shorten her life significantly more than um had been expected, you know, initially.
- 1:04:40SPEAKER_07: And um, I think they knew that the clock was ticking.
- 1:04:43SPEAKER_07: And so Dan decided that he wanted to push her um in one of the races.
- 1:04:49SPEAKER_07: And they found out to their surprise that that was not a permitted thing at that point at Run Disney.
- 1:04:56SPEAKER_07: There was no policy.
- 1:04:58SPEAKER_07: This was back in, I think this was back in like 2015, 2016.
- 1:05:01SPEAKER_07: I have to look back at the exact year and I may be misstating the year, but they found out that um there was no push policy at that point at Run Disney.
- 1:05:10SPEAKER_07: Um, probably just because it'd never come up.
- 1:05:13SPEAKER_07: Um, I mean, I I I'm I'm guessing, but like, you know, it's it's it's Disney and and they they admit when they're wrong and they they change things when things come to their attention that need to be changed.
- 1:05:25SPEAKER_07: Um and so Dan was the Dan was the person who kind of pushed and and had that policy changed.
- 1:05:32SPEAKER_07: Um and then again, it's not to say that there was sort of an anti-push.
- 1:05:36SPEAKER_07: My expectation is just that the it nobody had really broached it to the extent that it needed to be broached at that point.
- 1:05:42SPEAKER_07: Um, and and but they I think they kind of knew that the that there was a limited amount of time to have this experience with and for their daughter.
- 1:05:51SPEAKER_07: And so um the Boyles fought very hard and got, you know, or you know, fought might be the wrong word, but you know, did all of the things that needed to be done and put in put in all of the legwork that that needed to happen in order to um successfully have that policy changed and they were able to push Courtney in the Princess Half Marathon.
- 1:06:10SPEAKER_07: I believe it was 20, it was it was around 2015, 2016.
- 1:06:13SPEAKER_07: I'm I'm not remembering the exact year, but um they were able to push her in that half marathon.
- 1:06:18SPEAKER_07: And um Courtney was pushed for over a hundred miles at Disney before she passed away.
- 1:06:23SPEAKER_07: Oh so and now they have a they have a son um Kevin who they also have adopted their amazing family.
- 1:06:31SPEAKER_07: Yeah um they've adopted um a a a a boy from who's from Ecuador Kevin who um also has a lot of challenges and and they now push him so and there's a there's so many people who who who do that now um but yeah but it's thanks to the boils that that policy was changed.
- 1:06:48SPEAKER_07: So they do a lot of good work.
- 1:06:50SPEAKER_06: There you go didn't know that.
- 1:06:51SPEAKER_06: That's a touching story.
- 1:06:52SPEAKER_07: Yeah and good on Disney for like like that's another thing that like that's I think important about the this story is like obviously everything that the this family does is incredible and they're wonderful people and it's a beautiful story.
- 1:07:04SPEAKER_07: But also like when Disney gets it wrong or they've realized that like they haven't gotten it right necessarily like they they they change like they make it right.
- 1:07:14SPEAKER_07: They like they'll they don't like stubbornly sit on their their laurels and um you know and and make the paperwork impossible like they when things are brought to their attention like that they they fix it.
- 1:07:25SPEAKER_07: So yeah so I think it speaks well of Disney as well.
- 1:07:29SPEAKER_08: Right Lisa you just talked about some policy changes that were in place but most of us started around 2016 for our running tourney with Run Disney.
- 1:07:39SPEAKER_08: How do you feel like the community has changed since you first started racing?
- 1:07:44SPEAKER_07: I mean it's a hard thing to judge because I was coming in not knowing the community at that point.
- 1:07:48SPEAKER_07: And so in a way it's just sort of been me getting to know them not necessarily like them changing.
- 1:07:54SPEAKER_07: You know, and now we're all a part of it of course we're part of the community.
- 1:07:57SPEAKER_07: But you know I I I can't sort of pretend I knew exactly what the community was all about and and um you know and what the the people were coming in in 2016.
- 1:08:08SPEAKER_07: You know, that being said, I think um I think the inclusivity of it all, like the degree to which you know we've sort of broken the barrier of of you know the idea that it's just for hardcore athletes has sort of you know fallen, I don't want to say fallen by the the wayside because like like I said, they are still races and they are still should still should be treated like races.
- 1:08:30SPEAKER_07: But I think like the inclusivity of it all and like the degree to which it feels accessible is has grown and developed a lot over the years.
- 1:08:41SPEAKER_07: And you know and I think we see that and we all sort of complain about how hard registration is these days.
- 1:08:46SPEAKER_07: But like that's because we all love it.
- 1:08:47SPEAKER_07: You know, there's so many people that love it and want in um you know New York Marathon had a 1% acceptance rate this year.
- 1:08:53SPEAKER_07: So that's it's tough going everywhere.
- 1:08:55SPEAKER_07: That's great if you're into distance running.
- 1:08:57SPEAKER_07: So yeah so I think you know just like that aspect of the community has sort of changed over the years.
- 1:09:02SPEAKER_07: And then the only other thing I would do is like touch one more time on like post-pandemic attitudes and like our gratitude for each other and for the races and like having having had them taken away from us for for a little while and like seeing that that could happen.
- 1:09:18SPEAKER_07: I think like that the gratitude that we felt when we first came back to the in-person races um post COVID like is still there.
- 1:09:25SPEAKER_06: Like I can still feel it absolutely talk about the inclusivity and all that I and I quote this all the time we miss Jeff a lot Jeff Galloway but one of the things Jeff used to talk about was he it was his opinion that Run Disney was maybe the biggest single positive effect on the health of a multitude of people in the United States because people ran this thing that wouldn't run any other race.
- 1:09:49SPEAKER_07: Yeah it's such a good point yeah yeah yeah it's just an it's like a it's this great access point for because people love Disney and you know if you love Disney like I always say like if you love Disney you owe it to yourself to run a 5k like it's just a like it's a different way to experience it.
- 1:10:06SPEAKER_07: Like you could be a local who goes to the park you know every day of the week or something close to that and can recite the words of every attraction and like you could know everything about everything.
- 1:10:16SPEAKER_07: But if you haven't like run around world showcase before sunrise with the torches going and like music blaring or like turn the bend onto Main Street with throngs of people cheering as you bound toward the castle like it just it's a different way to experience the parks and um and yeah I think like you know what Jeff said is you know obviously everything Jeff said was true.
- 1:10:39SPEAKER_07: You know that being included is yeah it just it was you know it's it's it's just it's such a wonderful like access point for this incredibly healthy thing.
- 1:10:50SPEAKER_06: I think you just answered my next question but I'm gonna I'm gonna poke throw it out there anyway see if we can come up with not something else.
- 1:10:55SPEAKER_06: And that is but you just did this really well you wrote this book trying to explain Run Disney to everybody and I think you did a marvelous job.
- 1:11:04SPEAKER_07: But is there something you think that's impossible to explain until you've experienced it I think I think it's impossible to explain there's a list of things in my head right now so I'm deciding which one to say I think like the feeling of being in the stands watching the final finisher cross is probably my best answer to that question.
- 1:11:26SPEAKER_07: Like having just run the race yourself and having like fought through all the things and like like I've said like I keep saying like you know we we don't know like you just don't know what anybody else is carrying, you know, and like to and to stand there having just gone through it all yourself and your training season and and fought for that finish line and you know and it you know at that point it might be hours later like after you finished and to stand there and like cheer while the the final finisher crosses with the pacers and now that we've we've lost Jeff you know that means so much more as well as the pacers are coming in with them and like the you know the the last I think the last race I was at I watched the woman cross the finish line and she was kind of holding on to one of the security people's bikes and he was kind of like helping her get across and then when she kind of got close enough you know Carissa and and the others kind of swooped in and like took her took her by the arm and you know and they do the confetti you know and the whole crowd's like crying crying and cheering.
- 1:12:24SPEAKER_07: And it just like it's like this beautiful moment.
- 1:12:26SPEAKER_07: And like they're like Chris or someone in the who's speaking is usually kind of saying something that sort of sums all of this up really, really well better than I am right now.
- 1:12:35SPEAKER_07: But yeah, it's it's like standing there in in that moment and watching that just like it sums up you know like this this community that chooses to celebrate that person in that way.
- 1:12:49SPEAKER_07: I think just like sums it all up so well and like you like I you can conceptually understand it like as as somebody's explaining it to you.
- 1:12:56SPEAKER_07: But I think like to be there in that moment and particularly to be there in that moment after you've crossed the finish line as well like with your own baggage and your own difficult like all of your stuff like um it's a very difficult thing to to explain to somebody unless they've been through it.
- 1:13:10SPEAKER_06: You're you nailed it.
- 1:13:11SPEAKER_06: You nailed it because I'm sitting here thinking of a personal story that I'm not going to share because this is we want to hear from you.
- 1:13:19SPEAKER_06: But yeah I still get emotional about it.
- 1:13:23SPEAKER_06: And it's about somebody finishing at the end.
- 1:13:25SPEAKER_06: And uh yeah there's nothing like Run Disney.
- 1:13:29SPEAKER_12: So Lisa as we start to you know draw this interview to uh you know the the end here the book does a wonderful job of talking about the history of Run Disney and then you do an amazing job of highlighting the processes that you have to go through in present day to have you know the ultimate Run Disney experience.
- 1:13:52SPEAKER_12: But you know as we you know we joked about earlier for volume two of the book what are you looking forward to from Run Disney in say the next five, 10 years or so?
- 1:14:03SPEAKER_07: So it's so hard to look out that far and there's so many things that like you know we can hope are on the horizon.
- 1:14:08SPEAKER_07: I'm super curious to see how the new 5K um logistics play out and like what ends up coming of that now that they're and just like how much more that amplifies everything else we've been talking about like the inclusivity and the ex the accessibility of the races you know and all that good stuff like the the 5K's you know for you know we all know what I'm talking about but for anyone listening that they're they've massively expanded the the size of the 5Ks so that now they're they used to start at 5 a.m now they're gonna start at 4 30 in the morning.
- 1:14:38SPEAKER_07: And I think they're saying they're gonna have starters going out through 7 30 in the morning.
- 1:14:43SPEAKER_06: Yeah that's what they're saying, yes.
- 1:14:45SPEAKER_07: So that's a I mean and if you think about sort of the distance of the 5K and sort of how quickly they can put waves out, like that's a massive, massive increase in I I have I haven't seen the exact numbers on how many like reg have been allowed to register for the 5Ks versus in previous years, but just based on how quickly how not quickly they've been selling out for registrations, um it seems like the 5Ks have been massively increased in size.
- 1:15:15SPEAKER_07: So you know for all those reasons I think we're all curious to see like how logistically that ends up playing out.
- 1:15:21SPEAKER_07: I'm sure I'm gonna need to make some changes to the second version of the book next summer um based on you know kind of how how it all plays out but I'm excited for the I'm excited for the prospects of those changes and like and how much that can amplify everything else that we've been talking about about it being an awesome access point to the races.
- 1:15:42SPEAKER_06: Yeah it is for the second edition all right and you're right that we are all curious that we'll learn here in a little less than a hundred days now I think we're like 90 I said it at the beginning of the episode but my memory's so bad.
- 1:15:55SPEAKER_06: It's like 93 days or something until uh wow 92 days something like that.
- 1:16:00SPEAKER_06: Until we're back to wine and done.
- 1:16:02SPEAKER_06: Lisa now if you'll indulge us we like to wrap things up with some lightning round questions.
- 1:16:09SPEAKER_06: You ready?
- 1:16:10SPEAKER_06: I'm ready.
- 1:16:11SPEAKER_07: All right here we go your favorite run Disney weekend marathon weekend dopey absolutely favorite course marathon okay the marathon course is my favorite the four parks and and you know one of the few that includes the castle and every other detail that you could want out of the erase.
- 1:16:31SPEAKER_07: The new course or the old one where we go around the Polynesian around the new course new course the new course for sure I love the new course I love coming in around the bend.
- 1:16:41SPEAKER_07: I know it can get congested later and I've heard that it you know it can be a little aggravating at times but like did but um that I love the new course coming in around the bend at the Grand Floridian when they have the water pageant out.
- 1:16:54SPEAKER_07: And then psychologically I guess leaving because I used to be that you're kind of coming you know the the underpass under the water bridge by the contemporary like in my head I'm still pre-Magic Kingdom going through there.
- 1:17:07SPEAKER_07: So like psychologically I feel like I have more race ahead of me at that point but you're actually now you're coming out that way.
- 1:17:12SPEAKER_07: Plus I love um when you can seeing Space Mountain reflected over the water.
- 1:17:17SPEAKER_07: Oh yeah we're coming around the bend that way.
- 1:17:20SPEAKER_07: So yeah so the marathon's my favorite course I also love like the Animal Kingdom portion of the marathon so so much.
- 1:17:25SPEAKER_07: Um so yeah so far and away the the marathon for like all of the reasons and I love the new marathon course.
- 1:17:32SPEAKER_07: Favorite character stop you've ever seen probably um probably Prince John and the Sheriff of Nottingham for at Robinhood.
- 1:17:43SPEAKER_07: I think that was I think that was last year's marathon right and then I'm even more excited because that's the 10K theme for a springtime surprise next year.
- 1:17:49SPEAKER_07: We're a Robin Hood family.
- 1:17:50SPEAKER_07: Like that era of the movies is our favorite era of the movies and I think that's probably our favorite amongst them okay best costume you've worn or seen oh definitely not worn I'm not up in I'm not up there with the best of them um setting aside jogging Jack Sparrow who amazes me every time I see him I can't he's so fast and so amazing I can't like I can't wrap my head around him like being able to run in as fast as he does in what he does.
- 1:18:18SPEAKER_07: But I think the year that Mike Berselli was the tree of life.
- 1:18:22SPEAKER_07: Yes yes yeah and he had the I guess it was henna or whatever like he had they they had like he had had an artist paint his paint him as the tree of life and it kind of settled in and it was he was um yeah he had like so much detail and then he had the head piece on with with along with it.
- 1:18:38SPEAKER_07: Any of his costumes could have been the answer but that's the one that jumps out at me first.
- 1:18:42SPEAKER_06: Uh you may have answered this already what's the most underrated park to run through oh yeah Animal Kingdom for sure Animal Kingdom for sure.
- 1:18:51SPEAKER_07: Yeah it's so easy it's gorgeous like it's usually kind of right around sunrise when I'm coming in they've got the animals outside like for the little mean greets with the animals.
- 1:19:00SPEAKER_07: And also the fact that it's generally open well first of all like it's fun because if you want to do the attractions like you can ride Everest and stuff but also it's usually open at that point.
- 1:19:08SPEAKER_07: So you've it's one of the parks where you've kind of got spectators in the park and loved ones cheering which is which is really really cool.
- 1:19:14SPEAKER_00: Plus you're already at mile 17 at that point.
- 1:19:16SPEAKER_00: So that's nice.
- 1:19:17SPEAKER_07: 5K 10k half marathon marathon or dopey dopey go big or go home what is one Disney song that belongs on everybody's playlist Halfly Ever After with go the with go the distance as a close second but Halfway Ever After easy.
- 1:19:36SPEAKER_12: All right last one here Lisa finish this sentence the best part of Run Disney isn't the metal it's the people of course yeah of course yeah I'd have been disappointed if you said anything else I think I gave away the lead on that come on you're absolutely a hundred percent right and and we know that and we appreciate it uh thanks for participating in the lightning round I do have one final thoughtful question for you though you spent a lot of years in these races and now you spend a lot of time writing a book about them when someone closes the Run Disney Companion after they've read the final page what do you hope that they're feeling if you're a newcomer I hope you feel supported and inspired and ready and if you're a veteran I just hope you feel seen.
- 1:20:28SPEAKER_06: Awesome.
- 1:20:29SPEAKER_06: Awesome Lisa thank you so much for joining us please tell our friends how they can find you on your social media sites and how they can find the book.
- 1:20:39SPEAKER_07: So my main home is my own website which is thecastlerun.com but of course you can find me on Instagram at the castlerunner and you can DM me there if you want to reach me or contact me through the site.

- 1:21:09SPEAKER_07: Release date is next week right August 7 if I remember right yeah coming quick a week and a half away yeah Friday after next always delightful always a pleasure talking with you Lisa thank you for coming back with us hope it won't be four more years until we see you again hope to see you at the races coming up yeah for sure I can't wait to see you at the races and yeah it absolutely will not be another four years and I certainly hope the next four years don't go as fast as these ones did.
- 1:21:43SPEAKER_12: All right Lisa thanks a lot thank you so much it's been so much fun caution runners change of topic ahead it's been awesome over the last couple of years of this podcast to talk to so many authors but you know to be able to chat with Lisa again and you know just you know remind ourselves of how awesome this community is and I appreciate so much that you know she's put in all this effort to you know remind us of the important factors of uh Run Disney but then also you know provide that resource for new runners you know I I think it's great.
- 1:22:18SPEAKER_12: So between her book and you know all the podcasts that are out there now and you know and Instagram followings and such you know if you're brand new to this you know you have so many resources within the community that's gonna give you the the you know ultimate experience and uh again we can't thank Lisa enough for chatting with us uh on this week's episode but speaking of Lisa's book uh I know we've been talking about it the last couple of weeks but on August 23rd we are going to be hosting our virtual Rise and Run trivia contest with all of uh the funds we were talking about before benefiting the charity bibs of uh myself John and Bob for our various races but um in chatting with Lisa she offered to give us a copy of the book as one of our trivia prizes.
- 1:23:05SPEAKER_12: So uh if you're interested in picking up a copy of Lisa's book and you want to tie in some type of charitable effort to that uh it's uh pinned to the featured section of our Facebook page go ahead and sign up uh for that trivia contest again Sunday August 23rd 8 p.m eastern uh and it'll be a great time to get together share some laughs and uh as Bob said last week win some fabulous prizes fabulous prizes baby also for everyone else that's fundraising on the first of the month I put a post out every month for so you can post your charity links so look look for Saturday there'll be a new uh post up so you can post up your charity links and hopefully somebody else can help you reach your goal too.
- 1:23:51SPEAKER_06: So I'm looking forward to that whether we've made our goals or not we will do something charitable with the money that we raise uh and we've got some ideas we'll talk about them later on so looking forward to the trivia contest in late August.
- 1:24:07SPEAKER_06: A reminder we are going to play fantasy football this season now I didn't check today to see the numbers that we've had signed up but there is a sign up sheet for fantasy football pinned to the featured section of our Facebook group page if you're interested please sign up I don't have an end date for that yet but it's going to be probably third or fourth week in August because we're gonna need to end it form the leagues and then conduct the drafts.
- 1:24:38SPEAKER_06: So that's coming up and I'll keep reminding you about it.
- 1:24:42SPEAKER_06: Taking a look ahead friends our next zoom is not this week but it is next Thursday on August the 6th however and this may come up during the race report I've had our friends in Europe ask on several occasions when are you going to do a zoom that we can join?
- 1:25:01SPEAKER_06: We do our zooms at 8 o'clock on Thursday nights heck that's 1 a.m in the United Kingdom and even later as you go further east in Europe but at 3 o'clock Eastern time on Wednesday August 5th I'll have a Zoom.
- 1:25:20SPEAKER_06: Anybody is welcome to join but the aim is to get our friends from Europe give them a chance to visit with one another because as you will hear in the race report a bunch of them got together for a run in London.
- 1:25:32SPEAKER_06: Looks like they had a blast so more on that that will be not this Wednesday which was yesterday but it will be next week August the 5th and now please stand clear of the door it's time for a race report mantancy alejado de la sueport is sponsored by Thomas Stokes Stoked metabolic training stokes dot fit slash rise and run coaching is the place to go for more information.
- 1:26:12SPEAKER_06: Tom offers two outstanding programs one is this group accelerate program and the other is his one-on-one coaching taking a look let's start again we're starting in the middle of the week and I believe this one is on Wednesday MJ I went to look it up and even when I got to the website I still wasn't sure when the race occurred I think it was Wednesday MJ did the Asian lantern festival 5K at the Cleveland Zoo friends go to the website and look at the beautiful displays they have for the Asian lantern festival at the Cleveland Zoo.
- 1:27:00SPEAKER_06: You can just go to Cleveland Zoo I'm sure you'll find it they're spectacular and MJ put a bunch of photos in her Facebook page also the difference being most of the photos that MJ took were to taken I think in the evening but there was still daylight out the photos that are on the website are at night they're absolutely stunning.
- 1:27:18SPEAKER_06: Now MJ says they avoided a local tornado and then they headed up to Cleveland where the weather was actually quite nice.
- 1:27:26SPEAKER_06: It's a rather large race there's over a thousand runners in it kind of squished into a narrow pathway which I can imagine at a place like a zoo the zoo was built with a monster hill at the halfway point of the race.
- 1:27:40SPEAKER_06: They must have had the race in mind when they built the zoo.
- 1:27:44SPEAKER_06: Slower pace for this one because she stopped so often to take these wonderful pictures the finish line was rough as the runners had to run past the regular zoo guests.
- 1:27:53SPEAKER_06: I can kind of picture that.
- 1:27:55SPEAKER_06: Still it looks like it was a great run.
- 1:27:57SPEAKER_06: And again I urge you to take a look at not only MJ's photos But the photos on the website for the Cleveland Zoo.
- 1:28:03SPEAKER_06: On Friday, there was a run in the evening at 8 p.m.
- 1:28:07SPEAKER_06: start.
- 1:28:08SPEAKER_06: Karen did a 10K in San Antonio, Texas, the mid-summer night's dream run.
- 1:28:15SPEAKER_06: This is Karen's first race report.
- 1:28:17SPEAKER_06: Thanks for that, Karen.
- 1:28:18SPEAKER_06: All female race, full of fairy wings, lights, and male support crews.
- 1:28:24SPEAKER_06: There you go.
- 1:28:26SPEAKER_06: 89 degrees at the start in San Antonio.
- 1:28:29SPEAKER_06: Went out a little bit fast.
- 1:28:31SPEAKER_06: That's pretty common.
- 1:28:32SPEAKER_06: Walked the last mile.
- 1:28:34SPEAKER_06: Tried to run across the finish.
- 1:28:36SPEAKER_06: Her calf cramped up.
- 1:28:38SPEAKER_06: Down she goes.
- 1:28:40SPEAKER_06: Got help on the course and made it across the finish line.
- 1:28:45SPEAKER_06: And I understand, I'm pretty sure in a follow-up, she said she did go have uh some x-rays done, but everything turned out negative, and she's good to go.
- 1:28:55SPEAKER_06: Let us move now to Saturday and go to North Bend, Washington, uh, where a race our buddy John Hughes was talking about last week is one of his uh bucket list races, the Jack and Jill downhill half marathon occurred.
- 1:29:13SPEAKER_06: We had a couple of friends run it joining us now for the race report spotlight from the airport somewhere on the west coast.
- 1:29:21SPEAKER_06: It's Tracy.
- 1:29:22SPEAKER_06: Hiya, Tracy.
- 1:29:23SPEAKER_06: How are you doing?
- 1:29:24SPEAKER_10: I'm doing great.
- 1:29:26SPEAKER_06: Okay, we're glad.
- 1:29:27SPEAKER_06: Thanks for taking the time.
- 1:29:28SPEAKER_06: I know you're busy.
- 1:29:29SPEAKER_06: I know you're you're about to get on a flight here in a little while.
- 1:29:33SPEAKER_06: Well, let's see if we can get this in in the interim.
- 1:29:37SPEAKER_08: All right, Tracy.
- 1:29:38SPEAKER_08: So we always like to talk to our friends first about how you got started running.
- 1:29:43SPEAKER_10: So I I started running in 2013.
- 1:29:47SPEAKER_10: Um we were empty nesters and I sent my daughter off to college and I was like, gee, what am I gonna do?
- 1:29:53SPEAKER_10: So I decided to do this couch to 5K, and I did it.
- 1:29:58SPEAKER_10: Um and I enjoyed it.
- 1:30:00SPEAKER_10: I had some friends that also joined me and it was great.
- 1:30:03SPEAKER_10: But the running club that I was in, you know, they did straight running.
- 1:30:07SPEAKER_10: So there was no run lock.
- 1:30:09SPEAKER_10: And um after a couple of 5Ks, I really did not like it at all.
- 1:30:14SPEAKER_10: Um, so I did about, you know, maybe eight to ten 5Ks, and then I kind of just dropped away from it.
- 1:30:22SPEAKER_10: Um and then I had a friend who wanted me to do the relay for the Dallas Marathon.
- 1:30:29SPEAKER_10: So it was a group of five of us, and I said, look, I can do it, but I've never done anything beyond a 5K, so give me the shortest distance, and I did that, it was fine again, still wasn't my favorite, and then fast forward to um 2022.
- 1:30:47SPEAKER_10: We were at Disney for the 50th anniversary, and I we were there for marathon weekend, we didn't know it.
- 1:30:56SPEAKER_10: And we got to spectate a little bit of the marathon, and I literally I took some pictures, but I remember looking at this one resor, I don't know who she was, and I took a picture and I just kept looking at her thinking, I want to do that.
- 1:31:13SPEAKER_10: And then I said, you know what, I'm gonna sign up.
- 1:31:16SPEAKER_10: And Princess Weekend was coming up to sign up.
- 1:31:20SPEAKER_10: So I did it for 2023.
- 1:31:23SPEAKER_10: It was gonna be for my 55th birthday, and I jumped in wholeheartedly and did the challenge, even though I had never done a 10K, never done a half.
- 1:31:35SPEAKER_10: And all I thought was if I can run walk this and train for it, I can do it.
- 1:31:40SPEAKER_10: And I did.
- 1:31:42SPEAKER_10: Um, and I was hooked uh after that.
- 1:31:45SPEAKER_10: And then I signed up for Dopey 2024.
- 1:31:49SPEAKER_10: Um, never doing a marathon before, but I signed up for it.
- 1:31:53SPEAKER_06: That's the Run Disney way, yeah.
- 1:31:56SPEAKER_06: Yeah, good job.
- 1:31:57SPEAKER_06: Good job.
- 1:31:58SPEAKER_10: It is, it is, and and that's how and I've never looked back.
- 1:32:01SPEAKER_13: Let's talk about the race.
- 1:32:02SPEAKER_13: This is the Jack and Jill downhill, downhill half, but there's some interesting things about this race.
- 1:32:08SPEAKER_13: Can you tell tell us about it?
- 1:32:09SPEAKER_10: Yeah, so I will say I I think I pulled a jack, not intentionally, um, but I really had thought I had I thought I had read the course description, and I did not think we had to run through the tunnel.
- 1:32:25SPEAKER_10: And there's a 2.4 mile tunnel at the beginning, but I thought it was I thought it was only for the full marathon.
- 1:32:34SPEAKER_10: I thought we started right after the tunnel in the half marathon, and I was not correct.
- 1:32:40SPEAKER_10: And I found out literally the day before the race.
- 1:32:46SPEAKER_10: And um, I had to go get a flashlight because you had to have a headlamp or a flashlight.
- 1:32:53SPEAKER_10: And my husband just kept telling me, I know you're getting this in your head and you have got to stop.
- 1:32:59SPEAKER_10: Don't go into this panic mode because you have to run through a 2.4 mile dark tunnel.
- 1:33:05SPEAKER_10: Um, but it did, it was a little apprehensive.
- 1:33:08SPEAKER_10: And I know I had a lot of people comment on my my race report about that tunnel.
- 1:33:13SPEAKER_10: Um, so the tunnel was everything I thought it would be.
- 1:33:17SPEAKER_10: Um, it's dark.
- 1:33:18SPEAKER_10: Um, it's a little crowded.
- 1:33:20SPEAKER_10: Um, it's only about wide enough like for a vehicle that goes through.
- 1:33:26SPEAKER_10: So, you know, four runners across is a little crowded, maybe three runners dead.
- 1:33:32SPEAKER_10: But the terrain, the terrain is I mean, it's dark, and you're trying to watch.
- 1:33:40SPEAKER_10: There are puddles, there's gravel, there's uneven surface.
- 1:33:47SPEAKER_10: It's it just I'm a road runner, and this was totally different for me.
- 1:33:51SPEAKER_10: Um, so I just wanted to get out of the tunnel as fast as I could.
- 1:33:56SPEAKER_10: And I ran a lot of it and I was afraid to do, I was afraid to do walk intervals because um I was afraid of stopping.
- 1:34:05SPEAKER_06: I got you.
- 1:34:06SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 1:34:06SPEAKER_10: I didn't want to turn around and keep looking behind me because I'd I figured I'd probably trip and fall.
- 1:34:12SPEAKER_10: I just there were so many things.
- 1:34:15SPEAKER_10: And I think it played a part in my race.
- 1:34:18SPEAKER_10: Um, I had also forgotten my um my headphones.
- 1:34:22SPEAKER_10: Um, I left mine in the car by accident and realized that the start of the race I didn't have them.
- 1:34:28SPEAKER_10: And so I I just lost a lot of things.
- 1:34:32SPEAKER_10: It it just I couldn't do my intervals at the beginning.
- 1:34:35SPEAKER_10: So for the first two and a half miles, I had no intervals.
- 1:34:38SPEAKER_10: I had nothing.
- 1:34:39SPEAKER_10: And I just I ran.
- 1:34:41SPEAKER_10: Um, and so I ran.
- 1:34:43SPEAKER_10: And it it threw me off.
- 1:34:44SPEAKER_10: I thought I was running a faster pace, but I was not.
- 1:34:48SPEAKER_10: And when I got out of the tunnel is when my phone adjusted and told me what I was doing.
- 1:34:55SPEAKER_10: Um, and then I realized I was about a minute, I needed to be at an 11-minute mile pace to make my goals, and I was at a 12-minute uh pace and and three miles in, not doing intervals.
- 1:35:11SPEAKER_10: So to say the least, that's at that's at the 10 for my race.
- 1:35:15SPEAKER_10: Yeah.
- 1:35:16SPEAKER_10: But yeah, the scenery is gorgeous, and it's just absolutely magnificent.
- 1:35:23SPEAKER_10: Um, mountains and trees, and once you get out of the tunnel, right?
- 1:35:29SPEAKER_10: And you're just running.
- 1:35:32SPEAKER_10: Yeah, once you get out of the tunnel.
- 1:35:34SPEAKER_10: Um, but and it was a good support.
- 1:35:38SPEAKER_10: It was a good supported race.
- 1:35:39SPEAKER_10: Uh, about every two miles, um, about every two miles we had water um and Gatorade.
- 1:35:48SPEAKER_10: Um, and there was a few bathrooms along the way.
- 1:35:53SPEAKER_10: And it was a downhill, um, but I honestly in my mind thought I was gonna feel the downhill a little bit more, and I didn't.
- 1:36:04SPEAKER_10: I felt like it was flat for me, which was weird.
- 1:36:08SPEAKER_10: Even though it was like a thousand-foot elevation drop from start to finish, I didn't feel the pull of a downhill like I was thinking.
- 1:36:18SPEAKER_10: Um, but it was a beautiful course.
- 1:36:20SPEAKER_10: Um, I'm not a trail runner.
- 1:36:22SPEAKER_10: This was my first time.
- 1:36:23SPEAKER_06: I'm thinking a thousand feet over 13 miles, about 80 feet per mile.
- 1:36:27SPEAKER_06: That's not a lot.
- 1:36:28SPEAKER_10: It's not.
- 1:36:29SPEAKER_10: It's not.
- 1:36:30SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 1:36:30SPEAKER_06: In the tunnel, were people yelling so you get the echo?
- 1:36:34SPEAKER_10: No, no, no.
- 1:36:36SPEAKER_10: And I'm glad that I didn't have my my interval.
- 1:36:39SPEAKER_10: So the funny thing about my interval, as soon as I got out of the tunnel, I started um my interval timer on my phone.
- 1:36:45SPEAKER_10: And because I didn't have my headphones, of course, that meant it was gonna go off on my phone in my pocket, which is okay.
- 1:36:51SPEAKER_10: And it's a ding, you know, two things to go, one ding to stop.
- 1:36:54SPEAKER_10: Well, it sounds like a a bike valve almost.
- 1:36:58SPEAKER_06: Okay, yeah.
- 1:36:59SPEAKER_10: And it's quiet out there.
- 1:37:01SPEAKER_10: And if there was runners around me, they just kept looking like where's the bike?
- 1:37:07SPEAKER_10: Um like they were expecting somebody on a bike.
- 1:37:12SPEAKER_10: And I'm so glad I did not turn that on in the tunnel because it would have echoed.
- 1:37:17SPEAKER_06: Yeah, it would.
- 1:37:18SPEAKER_10: So um, it's a good thing I did not turn it on.
- 1:37:20SPEAKER_10: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:37:21SPEAKER_10: But you could hear the runners at the start, and the race started at 6 30, and I think it only took a minute and a half, and I crossed the start line.
- 1:37:30SPEAKER_10: I mean, it wasn't a huge crowd, but you could hear the runners when they got to the end of the tunnel because they were all cheering.
- 1:37:39SPEAKER_10: And you're still in the tunnel, but you hear them yelling, and you're like, oh, they've reached the end of the tunnel.
- 1:37:45SPEAKER_13: Okay.
- 1:37:45SPEAKER_10: Yeah.
- 1:37:46SPEAKER_10: So that was kind of cool.
- 1:37:47SPEAKER_13: That is.
- 1:37:48SPEAKER_13: So so was this like on an old rail track?
- 1:37:51SPEAKER_10: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:37:52SPEAKER_10: I think that's how it describes it.
- 1:37:54SPEAKER_10: Um, if this was an old railroad track, and hence the grade of it makes sense.
- 1:37:59SPEAKER_10: Um, but it's used for hiking and biking and everything.
- 1:38:04SPEAKER_10: And and there were a few other hikers out there that weren't part of the race, and even some bikers out there that weren't part of the race.
- 1:38:11SPEAKER_10: Um, and then probably when we hit about mile, yeah, we passed over about mile eight or nine, there was this absolutely beautiful bridge that we passed over.
- 1:38:22SPEAKER_10: And I did get a picture of that.
- 1:38:24SPEAKER_10: We passed a waterfall, but I I didn't get a picture of that because by the time I was running past it and then realized I didn't want to stop and turnaround.
- 1:38:33SPEAKER_10: And so I just uh I just kept going.
- 1:38:37SPEAKER_10: So I missed that picture, but it it the views were spectacular.
- 1:38:41SPEAKER_06: How was the weather?
- 1:38:42SPEAKER_10: Oh, the weather was oh my gosh.
- 1:38:44SPEAKER_10: Um, so coming from East Texas, which was over 100 degrees while we were gone, um the weather, the temperature at the beginning of the race, which it starts up at Snoqualmie Pap, um, which is like a ski area, is where you start.
- 1:38:59SPEAKER_10: Um, it was 52 degrees.
- 1:39:02SPEAKER_10: Um, and a little overcast, but the sun did come out.
- 1:39:06SPEAKER_10: But we were running west.
- 1:39:09SPEAKER_10: So when the sun shined on us, it was to our back.
- 1:39:13SPEAKER_10: Um, so that was the good thing.
- 1:39:15SPEAKER_10: And it wasn't that often that we were in the sunshine.
- 1:39:17SPEAKER_10: Most of the time we were in and under the tree cover for most of it.
- 1:39:24SPEAKER_10: Um, so it was it was a really it was a great race for that temperature-wise, it was fantastic.
- 1:39:30SPEAKER_06: Awesome.
- 1:39:31SPEAKER_06: Tell us about the metals, Tracy.
- 1:39:34SPEAKER_10: The metal was beautiful.
- 1:39:36SPEAKER_10: It's it was black and it had like um a hinge doors and it opened up.
- 1:39:41SPEAKER_10: And so it had the Jack and Jill in like the this lime green color, and then it opened it up and it uh I can't even remember what was on the inside of it.
- 1:39:50SPEAKER_10: And they were really heavy metals.
- 1:39:52SPEAKER_10: Um, I get into the heavy part toward like a Run Disney metal, um, they were really pretty.
- 1:39:58SPEAKER_10: Um, so I was glad I got that too at the end.
- 1:40:01SPEAKER_10: The the marathoners passed us, started passing us probably around, I think it was about mile seven or eight, when I think the lead marathon runner passed.
- 1:40:13SPEAKER_10: And then as you kept going, you kept having those marathon runners run past.
- 1:40:18SPEAKER_10: Um, because they they started at 6 a.m.
- 1:40:21SPEAKER_10: a 30 minutes before, but they did an an out and back up at the top, and then they hit the tunnel midway through, like around that 13.1, is when they hit the tunnel, and then they do the rest of that course with us.
- 1:40:37SPEAKER_10: Um, and so those, oh my gosh, today we're flying.
- 1:40:40SPEAKER_10: Their downhill was our portion of it.
- 1:40:43SPEAKER_10: I think their out and back was pretty flat, is how I described it.
- 1:40:47SPEAKER_10: But you know, some of that they use it for a box and qualifier.
- 1:40:50SPEAKER_10: Um, and I could see a lot of them were finishing, yeah, they they were finishing before I finished and they only started 30 minutes before.
- 1:40:59SPEAKER_10: So, so they were getting some good times.
- 1:41:02SPEAKER_10: Um and and they were very polite, you know, you just you let them go on the left, we stayed on the right, and you could hear them coming.
- 1:41:11SPEAKER_10: Um, but um, and especially near like water, you tried to just stay out of their way because you knew they were just kind of flying by trying to grab water.
- 1:41:20SPEAKER_10: And um, but you know, they were just sporadically come by.
- 1:41:24SPEAKER_10: Um, so but it was a good, it was that was good too, seeing them running by.
- 1:41:29SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 1:41:29SPEAKER_06: You did pretty well in this thing, right?
- 1:41:32SPEAKER_10: Um, I did not hit any of my goals.
- 1:41:35SPEAKER_10: I I had wanted to try for a Disney POT.
- 1:41:38SPEAKER_10: I've never gotten one.
- 1:41:39SPEAKER_10: I thought I could hit the 230 and get one.
- 1:41:44SPEAKER_10: Um, my fastest half marathon ever was like a 238 in change.
- 1:41:50SPEAKER_10: And so I thought I could could do it, but um, I just I didn't realize trail racing can slow you down a bit.
- 1:42:00SPEAKER_10: Um and it it can.
- 1:42:03SPEAKER_10: It has an impact.
- 1:42:04SPEAKER_10: And I didn't realize that my average, I averaged, I finished at a like a 241.
- 1:42:11SPEAKER_10: Um so if I had hit my my initial pace, I would have done it.
- 1:42:16SPEAKER_10: I just couldn't, I just couldn't get into the rhythm of what I needed to do.
- 1:42:21SPEAKER_10: And and then at that point, it's just self-preservation.
- 1:42:25SPEAKER_10: It's like I can try to go all out, but then am I gonna finish?
- 1:42:28SPEAKER_10: So I just need to finish at this point.
- 1:42:32SPEAKER_10: And I had hoped even to get a new PR, but I just it just wasn't in the cards.
- 1:42:39SPEAKER_10: I I just did the best that I could do.
- 1:42:42SPEAKER_10: And and I finished and I felt great at the end.
- 1:42:46SPEAKER_10: So um I just chalked it up too.
- 1:42:50SPEAKER_10: That was an experience.
- 1:42:51SPEAKER_10: And if I ever do it again, I need to need to run on some gravel more to get you to that surface.
- 1:42:58SPEAKER_08: Sorry, Tracy.
- 1:42:59SPEAKER_08: This sounded like a beautiful race.
- 1:43:00SPEAKER_08: I know it's been on my radar, but we want to know when are we gonna see you next?
- 1:43:05SPEAKER_10: So I don't get to really race that often.
- 1:43:09SPEAKER_10: So because of what we do um for a living, um, we work weekends because we own a bed and breakfast.
- 1:43:16SPEAKER_10: So for me to do a race weekend is a big deal.
- 1:43:19SPEAKER_10: And I live in a I live in a very rural area, so there's nothing near me.
- 1:43:23SPEAKER_10: Everything requires travel.
- 1:43:25SPEAKER_10: So my next step though, I mean, I am in for all four race weekends at Disney.
- 1:43:32SPEAKER_10: Um, I didn't intend to try for a perfect season, and I'm not going to get one because marathon weekend, I wasn't gonna sign up.
- 1:43:41SPEAKER_10: And I got into the queue to help somebody try to get registered.
- 1:43:46SPEAKER_10: And you know, I've got an open window.
- 1:43:48SPEAKER_10: So I thought, well, let me do the 10K.
- 1:43:51SPEAKER_10: Oh, let me do the half.
- 1:43:52SPEAKER_10: I love the 10K and a half, and I just signed up for those two, but all the other race week, I know all the other race weekends.
- 1:43:59SPEAKER_10: I'll be at wine and dine doing all three, and I'll be at Princess and Springtime doing all the races, just not marathon weekend.
- 1:44:06SPEAKER_10: I'm just doing the 10K and half.
- 1:44:08SPEAKER_10: And um, and so I'm excited.
- 1:44:11SPEAKER_10: And my family, I've got friends, Debbie, Debbie and Jessica are doing, um, we're doing wine and dine together.
- 1:44:21SPEAKER_10: Um, but then um we'll all be, I think, at Marathon Weekend too.
- 1:44:26SPEAKER_10: Um, but for Princess Weekend, my family, my son is now loving friends, has done his first weekend.
- 1:44:34SPEAKER_10: So he's joining me for all three.
- 1:44:37SPEAKER_10: And my daughter and daughter-in-law are doing the the 5K with me.
- 1:44:42SPEAKER_10: But Princess always falls on my birthday, so that's gonna be a big birthday celebration again.
- 1:44:48SPEAKER_10: Uh, and then my son, my I know my son wants to do, we're doing springtime again together.
- 1:44:54SPEAKER_10: Um, me and him.
- 1:44:56SPEAKER_10: And then he wants to do Dopey 2028 and wants me to do it with him.
- 1:45:00SPEAKER_10: I just don't know if I have a full marathon in me anymore.
- 1:45:03SPEAKER_10: It's getting harder and harder, but uh, we'll see.
- 1:45:06SPEAKER_10: So that's where I'll be at, uh, all at Run Disney.
- 1:45:09SPEAKER_06: Tracy, that's great.
- 1:45:11SPEAKER_06: Hey, thanks for taking the time to uh stop by and talk with us.
- 1:45:16SPEAKER_06: Now go catch your flight.
- 1:45:18SPEAKER_10: I will, I will.
- 1:45:19SPEAKER_10: Yeah, we're heading back to Dallas.
- 1:45:20SPEAKER_10: Unfortunately, it's over a hundred degrees there, so I'm not looking forward to that.
- 1:45:24SPEAKER_10: But thank you so much.
- 1:45:25SPEAKER_10: I'm glad I got to to talk about the race weekend.
- 1:45:28SPEAKER_10: It was fun.
- 1:45:29SPEAKER_06: Also at that race, Hira was there.
- 1:45:31SPEAKER_06: Now, this race ran on Saturday and Sunday.
- 1:45:35SPEAKER_06: Tracy ran on Saturday, Hira ran on Sunday.
- 1:45:38SPEAKER_06: She forgot her headphones.
- 1:45:40SPEAKER_06: I think Tracy said the same thing, if I'm not mistaken.
- 1:45:44SPEAKER_06: Uh Hira entered the tunnel with the two-hour, 10-minute pace group, came out of the tunnel, the course headed downhill, and she just took off.
- 1:45:53SPEAKER_06: Finished just 45 seconds shy of her PR at two hours and five minutes.
- 1:46:04SPEAKER_06: Milwaukee, Wisconsin had an appropriately named heat wave half marathon.
- 1:46:10SPEAKER_06: Carlos, Tara with their daughters Nina and uh Sicily.
- 1:46:16SPEAKER_06: Uh pressure was on for Sicily on this one.
- 1:46:20SPEAKER_06: Only a week left to get her marathon weekend proof of time.
- 1:46:24SPEAKER_06: They had great weather and a nice course, and Sicily just rocked it with a three-minute PR and got that proof of time.
- 1:46:34SPEAKER_06: Erin was in Three Forks, Montana running the Headwaters Bank Run 5K in Clearwater, Florida, and I don't know how I miss these things, but Stephanie ran the freaking hot 5K, and yes, it was.
- 1:46:53SPEAKER_06: Uh had a blast conquering the bridge.
- 1:46:57SPEAKER_06: We don't have many hills in Florida, but we have some bridges that are tough.
- 1:47:02SPEAKER_06: I've talked before about driving three or four miles north and using a bridge for hill training.
- 1:47:09SPEAKER_06: Well, the next bridge in that sequence, one that I can see from the bridge that I cross, is this bridge in Clearwater.
- 1:47:16SPEAKER_06: And it is significant, I promise.
- 1:47:20SPEAKER_06: Uh great race organization, great after party, and they've got a lovely place for the after party.
- 1:47:27SPEAKER_06: Food and drink.
- 1:47:27SPEAKER_06: So, Stephanie, good job on that 5K in Clearwater.
- 1:47:31SPEAKER_06: The Retro Run 5K was in Homewood, Alabama.
- 1:47:36SPEAKER_06: Holly ran it.
- 1:47:37SPEAKER_06: Fun 5K full of retro costumes and fast runners.
- 1:47:42SPEAKER_06: She loved getting to encourage people as they ran by, wants to thank the volunteers, just enjoyed every minute of the race.
- 1:47:49SPEAKER_06: Finished feeling like she could have gone nine more miles.
- 1:47:53SPEAKER_06: I'm not quite sure why she picked out nine, but heck, if you only do three and you feel like you can do nine more, good for you.
- 1:48:00SPEAKER_06: Lori commented in the comments on Holly's post that she was at this race also.
- 1:48:06SPEAKER_06: In Grafton, West Virginia, Rich ran the three bridges 5K.
- 1:48:12SPEAKER_06: Proceeds from this race went to a young boy fighting cancer.
- 1:48:16SPEAKER_06: Uh there was an additional concern as two nearby cities were hit by catastrophic flooding in West Virginia on Tuesday.
- 1:48:24SPEAKER_06: Donations were collected sent to them later in the day.
- 1:48:30SPEAKER_06: But that's okay.
- 1:48:31SPEAKER_06: Great seeing some people.
- 1:48:34SPEAKER_06: Good job, Rich.
- 1:48:37SPEAKER_06: Stephanie ran the Barn Burner 5K, and I don't have notes on where the Barn Burner 5K was, but it's a morning run.
- 1:48:45SPEAKER_06: I'm sure Stephanie knows where it was, because well, she ran it.
- 1:48:49SPEAKER_06: She recently started with uh the Galloway 101 training and ran sub-40 for the first time ever in a 5K, which of course is a PR.
- 1:49:01SPEAKER_06: All the way out in Seattle, an evening run, the C Fair Torchlight Run 5K.
- 1:49:08SPEAKER_06: Rob was there.
- 1:49:08SPEAKER_06: Last minute registration, he's out visiting Seattle, said they had great weather.
- 1:49:13SPEAKER_06: The course was lined because there was a torchlight parade that followed.
- 1:49:18SPEAKER_06: Now Rob ran a 2739 at an impressive time.
- 1:49:22SPEAKER_06: Great medal, great post-race party.
- 1:49:25SPEAKER_06: Now Stephanie was also out there.
- 1:49:26SPEAKER_06: Stephanie did the Barn Burner 5K earlier, so the barn burner 5K must have been in Seattle or at least close by.
- 1:49:34SPEAKER_06: Because she ran that one instead of PR, and then in the evening she ran this 5K and set another PR.
- 1:49:45SPEAKER_06: Well, that's pretty darn good.
- 1:49:47SPEAKER_06: Where'd you go, Stephanie?
- 1:49:49SPEAKER_06: The St.
- 1:49:50SPEAKER_06: Croix Crossing in Stillwater, Minnesota.
- 1:49:56SPEAKER_06: Liz and Mark were there.
- 1:49:57SPEAKER_06: Liz did the 10K, Mark the 5K.
- 1:50:00SPEAKER_06: Point to point races.
- 1:50:01SPEAKER_06: You busted the start line.
- 1:50:03SPEAKER_06: Liz PR'd that 10k by a minute and a half.
- 1:50:07SPEAKER_06: Mark came close to his PR.
- 1:50:10SPEAKER_06: Uh great getaway.
- 1:50:12SPEAKER_06: They'll likely run this one again.
- 1:50:15SPEAKER_06: In West Orange, New Jersey.
- 1:50:18SPEAKER_06: Alicia did the squatchy surprise three-hour event.
- 1:50:24SPEAKER_06: A you most unusual format to this one.
- 1:50:28SPEAKER_06: You almost have to read Alicia's Facebook post to get it all.
- 1:50:34SPEAKER_06: But it's a loop race.
- 1:50:37SPEAKER_06: They had four different loops with varying distances and different elevation gains.
- 1:50:42SPEAKER_06: And the format was that you'd draw a golf ball at the top of each loop, and the color of the ball you drew indicated what loop you'd run.
- 1:50:52SPEAKER_06: Fun.
- 1:50:53SPEAKER_12: Thank God Loopy Looper doesn't do that.
- 1:50:55SPEAKER_12: If not by our three, I'd be confused as all get out.
- 1:50:58SPEAKER_06: Oh, and they varied quite a bit.
- 1:51:01SPEAKER_06: Now I remember Alicia saying she drew the same color the first two, and it was actually one of the tougher loops that she drew.
- 1:51:08SPEAKER_06: But towards the end of the race, she had tougher decisions to make.
- 1:51:12SPEAKER_06: Because if you started past such and such a time, and then anyway, Alicia wound up taking five loops, totaling 11 and a quarter miles in her three-hour day.
- 1:51:25SPEAKER_06: Sounds like she had a good time.
- 1:51:27SPEAKER_06: Really sounds like a fun race.
- 1:51:28SPEAKER_06: Interesting.
- 1:51:30SPEAKER_06: MJ was on the report earlier.
- 1:51:32SPEAKER_06: She's back again.
- 1:51:33SPEAKER_06: This is a nighttime race on Saturday.
- 1:51:35SPEAKER_06: The Lowellville Rocket 5K in Lowellville, Ohio.
- 1:51:41SPEAKER_06: She went all out with her costume.
- 1:51:44SPEAKER_06: Light up material everywhere in her ears, her shorts, her two-too.
- 1:51:50SPEAKER_06: Not exactly a flat course.
- 1:51:52SPEAKER_06: She ran a consistent pace, avoided the trains.
- 1:51:56SPEAKER_06: That's not a uh metaphor.
- 1:51:58SPEAKER_06: There were actually trains that crossed a course, and sometimes you had to wait for them, but she managed to avoid them.
- 1:52:05SPEAKER_06: Finished and won the costume contest.
- 1:52:10SPEAKER_06: Good job, MJ.
- 1:52:12SPEAKER_06: In Hutto, Texas, the home of the Hutto Hippos.
- 1:52:17SPEAKER_06: Sadly, not Job of the Hutt.
- 1:52:19SPEAKER_06: Uh the Popsicle Dash 5K, Derek ran a beautiful morning.
- 1:52:24SPEAKER_06: Now, by the time this race finished, Derek had been awake for 22 straight hours, and yet somehow he beat his 2026 5K PR time from which he had set last week.
- 1:52:39SPEAKER_06: He beat it by 43 seconds.
- 1:52:42SPEAKER_06: He wore a dopey in training shirt that he got back in 2015, that back when they were using Champion for their shirts, and it still looks great.
- 1:52:53SPEAKER_06: You guys remember they I think they stopped the I'm training for shirts.
- 1:52:57SPEAKER_06: Greg, I think you had one for Wine and Dine 2016.
- 1:53:00SPEAKER_06: In fact, I know you did.
- 1:53:01SPEAKER_06: That's correct, because that's the only reason why we met.
- 1:53:03SPEAKER_06: Yes, it is.
- 1:53:05SPEAKER_06: And uh I think that was it.
- 1:53:07SPEAKER_06: I think they stopped.
- 1:53:08SPEAKER_12: I don't remember any others after that.
- 1:53:11SPEAKER_06: No, nor do I.
- 1:53:12SPEAKER_06: No, I didn't do any other races that year.
- 1:53:13SPEAKER_06: I don't know if they had them for the rest of the 2016-17 season or not, but that was it.
- 1:53:19SPEAKER_06: By the time the 1718 season ran around, they didn't have them anymore.
- 1:53:23SPEAKER_06: Which begs the question, I don't know why.
- 1:53:26SPEAKER_06: Seems when there's an opportunity, and this is not being dismissive, but it seems when there's an opportunity to make some money, which there is on selling training shirts, that Disney would do it.
- 1:53:35SPEAKER_06: But regardless, Durick's still got one, and it still looks good.
- 1:53:43SPEAKER_06: Let's move to Sunday.
- 1:53:44SPEAKER_06: We're in northern Virginia where Jennifer ran the birthday bash 5K.
- 1:53:50SPEAKER_06: Jennifer's uh one of our better runners in terms of speed, and she usually does longer runners longer than 5Ks.
- 1:53:57SPEAKER_06: Decent weather, still warm and human in northern Virginia this time of year.
- 1:54:00SPEAKER_06: You can't avoid that.
- 1:54:02SPEAKER_06: She finished with a time of 2244, which I think is fantastic.
- 1:54:06SPEAKER_06: It was good for age group fourth place, 24th female.
- 1:54:10SPEAKER_06: Uh I think it's fantastic.
- 1:54:13SPEAKER_06: Jennifer thinks it's okay.
- 1:54:15SPEAKER_06: And that's that's it.
- 1:54:17SPEAKER_06: Running's an individual sport, and we all measure by our own yardstick.
- 1:54:22SPEAKER_06: But this was her first race as part of the relay active team.
- 1:54:27SPEAKER_06: She got so many comments on the acute tie-dyed running kit that she had.
- 1:54:35SPEAKER_06: And she reminded herself that summer training equals fall PRs, even for somebody fast like Jennifer.
- 1:54:43SPEAKER_06: I mentioned this run in London, the Hercules 5K.
- 1:54:48SPEAKER_06: It was in the theater district, and started and finished, or started or finished, near the theater that was hosting Hercules in London.
- 1:54:59SPEAKER_06: We had a bunch of folks there.
- 1:55:01SPEAKER_06: We had, let's see, Heather writes a note saying there were eight of them together, including one person from Paris.
- 1:55:07SPEAKER_06: It sounds strange, but her journey wasn't the longest.
- 1:55:12SPEAKER_06: They were they had organized themselves with Facebook Messenger.
- 1:55:15SPEAKER_06: They mostly ran as a group, had a post-race lunch, including Margaritas, served by someone who used to work at Rosen Crown.
- 1:55:23SPEAKER_06: How cool is that?
- 1:55:25SPEAKER_06: Uh it helped them with the lack of Run Disney events over the summer.
- 1:55:31SPEAKER_06: Let's see.
- 1:55:32SPEAKER_06: Now Anna called it a Disney race, kinda.
- 1:55:38SPEAKER_06: It was billed as a toga run.
- 1:55:40SPEAKER_06: So friends showed up as the muses, Hercules, Meg, Phil, and Anna as the Flasher.
- 1:55:51SPEAKER_06: Gotta love, gotta love Anna's reports.
- 1:55:55SPEAKER_06: Great atmosphere.
- 1:55:56SPEAKER_06: The Race Village again was right outside the theater rural on Dury Lane, where the music hall is housed, right in the center of London.
- 1:56:06SPEAKER_06: Best part of that, inside toilets, no porta potties.
- 1:56:10SPEAKER_12: I gotta say, I love the flasher photo.
- 1:56:12SPEAKER_12: I I thought that was spectacular.
- 1:56:14SPEAKER_12: And I was just so glad to see such a great group there.
- 1:56:17SPEAKER_12: Um, but I really want to see Hercules.
- 1:56:20SPEAKER_12: I I've been hearing lots of great things about it, but I and I really wanted to come to Broadway, but there's so many great um Broadway shows that are debuting uh this season that I don't know if Disney would want to bring that into the fold because they got a lot of stiff competition, especially from another West End transplant, that ferocious bear Paddington.
- 1:56:45SPEAKER_12: That I I think that that's gonna take Broadway by storm next year, and I I can't wait to go see it.
- 1:56:50SPEAKER_06: Well, that's the only report we got, but let's go down the list of rise and run friends who were at this event in London.
- 1:56:57SPEAKER_06: Aside from Anna, we had Mary Ann, Amy, Heather, Ellen, Emma, Jessica, Shenley, Jonathan, and here stateside, Jenny ran it virtually with her 10-year-old daughter, Freya, and other friends.
- 1:57:21SPEAKER_06: So a wonderful turnout in London.
- 1:57:23SPEAKER_06: That kind of precipitated my idea.
- 1:57:25SPEAKER_06: Well, it wasn't my idea.
- 1:57:26SPEAKER_06: That kind of precipitated their idea to have a European Zoom, and again, that will be next Wednesday, August 5th.
- 1:57:35SPEAKER_06: I look forward to it.
- 1:57:36SPEAKER_06: I hope it's not too hot.
- 1:57:37SPEAKER_06: I'm gonna probably have to be sitting outside, but that's okay.
- 1:57:39SPEAKER_06: I got a fan.
- 1:57:40SPEAKER_06: I'll be alright.
- 1:57:43SPEAKER_06: Let's see, the Aloha 5K.
- 1:57:45SPEAKER_06: Christy ran that.
- 1:57:46SPEAKER_06: Of course, the Aloha 5K was in Milford, Michigan.
- 1:57:51SPEAKER_06: Air quality's greatly improved in Michigan.
- 1:57:53SPEAKER_06: That's good.
- 1:57:54SPEAKER_06: The hills are still there, though.
- 1:57:56SPEAKER_06: For the second consecutive year at this race, Christy won her age group.
- 1:58:02SPEAKER_06: Way to go, Christy.
- 1:58:03SPEAKER_06: Let's see.
- 1:58:04SPEAKER_06: There was a 5K at Hempstead Lake, New York in the evening, part of the New York State Summer Runs series.
- 1:58:14SPEAKER_06: Megan did it, one lap around the lake with some great views, all around good race.
- 1:58:19SPEAKER_06: Ended the night by going to the famous All American Burger in Massapiqua, New York.
- 1:58:28SPEAKER_06: Not familiar with the famous All-American Burger, probably because I don't live in that part of New York.
- 1:58:35SPEAKER_06: Anyone ever heard of it?
- 1:58:37SPEAKER_13: Massapequa's out there on the island, so yeah.
- 1:58:42SPEAKER_13: It's a little far fur.
- 1:58:43SPEAKER_06: Okay.
- 1:58:44SPEAKER_06: I get it.
- 1:58:46SPEAKER_06: Well, I'm glad you enjoyed it, Megan.
- 1:58:48SPEAKER_06: It sounds great.
- 1:58:50SPEAKER_06: But with that, we wrap up the race report for episode 253 of the Rise and Run podcast.
- 1:58:57SPEAKER_06: Friends, and if you run, you know you are our friend.
- 1:59:01SPEAKER_06: Thank you for joining us.
- 1:59:02SPEAKER_06: Thank you for sticking with us.
- 1:59:04SPEAKER_06: Hope you enjoyed this episode.
- 1:59:06SPEAKER_06: Fun to talk with Lisa again.
- 1:59:08SPEAKER_06: Always a pleasure there.
- 1:59:10SPEAKER_06: Hey, stick with that training.
- 1:59:12SPEAKER_06: We keep telling you.
- 1:59:14SPEAKER_06: Stick with it.
- 1:59:15SPEAKER_06: Consistency trumps motivation.
- 1:59:19SPEAKER_06: Success follows that consistency.
- 1:59:23SPEAKER_06: Till we meet again.
- 1:59:24SPEAKER_06: Happy running.
