- 0:37Speaker 1: the airwaves once again on ninety three to three KJARFM.
- 0:40Speaker 1: But for now, looking forward to diving into watah and
- 0:43Speaker 1: after the Kraken went into the Holidays on a high
- 0:47Speaker 1: note and came so close to extending their win streak
- 0:50Speaker 1: to five, but settling for a three to two shootout
- 0:52Speaker 1: loss last night against the Vancouver Canucks. A pretty good
- 0:56Speaker 1: guy to talk about here with this is sat our Shaw.
- 0:59Speaker 1: He'll be joined me Everett, fits you, Al Kaniski as well,
- 1:02Speaker 1: and just a bit. Satire is the radio host for
- 1:05Speaker 1: the Caducks. As far as game night cover turn on
- 1:07Speaker 1: sports Nets six point fifty, we'll dive into the quinn
- 1:10Speaker 1: use trade, the youngsters coming back in return, the long
- 1:14Speaker 1: term picture also for the Canucks, and much more as
- 1:18Speaker 1: satire Shah joining us here in just a little bit
- 1:22Speaker 1: on the program. Beyond that, Everett al and myself, we
- 1:25Speaker 1: have our picks of our best stories of twenty twenty
- 1:28Speaker 1: five and a look ahead to twenty twenty six. Additionally
- 1:32Speaker 1: are three Stars of the week aht for you. Last
- 1:35Speaker 1: name rhymes with Golvinen and well deserved on that end
- 1:39Speaker 1: as well. Plus also what four to zero and one
- 1:42Speaker 1: does here in the scope of the Krake End and
- 1:44Speaker 1: their spot right now in the playoff race at this
- 1:47Speaker 1: point of the season. Before that, here's a little bit
- 1:50Speaker 1: of what you may have missed on the radio side,
- 1:53Speaker 1: with the Krakend going right through southern California, blitzing their
- 1:57Speaker 1: way through the Ducks and the Kings, and then picking
- 2:00Speaker 1: up right where they left off back on home miss again,
- 2:04Speaker 1: Kracken take it away right side, Cocko juveneirs into the
- 2:07Speaker 1: zone left side for every Hess Jordan every nine fifty
- 2:15Speaker 1: six remaining in period three on a pier step left circle.
- 2:20Speaker 1: After all that chaos, the captain lived in the Kraken
- 2:25Speaker 1: to a two.
- 2:25Speaker 4: To one lead on Manyers and Jordan Niberley. They've played
- 2:29Speaker 4: so much together. Matty Beneers get that puck in the
- 2:31Speaker 4: middle of the ice he's looking for Everly. He draws
- 2:34Speaker 4: the defensive to him, slides it over. Everty goes top shelf,
- 2:37Speaker 4: gloves side onto stall.
- 2:39Speaker 2: Two to one crack, a calm.
- 2:40Speaker 1: Long lead feed broken up. Tobenen got one ahead Everley and.
- 2:44Speaker 3: The empty ninety scars Jordan.
- 2:49Speaker 1: Every ever falls up back out now for Stephens, sitting
- 2:52Speaker 1: with control. Kast penalty kill sets up as this puck
- 2:55Speaker 1: worked in deep everly back to Stevens said left. Pash
- 2:58Speaker 1: Parks mount to Beniers in deep to Everly turns in front.
- 3:00Speaker 3: Suits of scores.
- 3:04Speaker 1: Zorn it every continuing to heat up on this.
- 3:08Speaker 3: Robsray offensive zone for Seattle. But here's behind the goal
- 3:13Speaker 3: far corner in.
- 3:14Speaker 5: Front every shot scar torn It Everly goals in three straight.
- 3:25Speaker 6: Games as Compocacko feeds it from the right corner. It's
- 3:29Speaker 6: a one hing cracking lead, sixteen to twelve to.
- 3:33Speaker 4: Play in a second, but Como Covo gets not bucked
- 3:35Speaker 4: down load on the right side after Maddy Pneers takes
- 3:37Speaker 4: it into the offensive zone and Como Coco.
- 3:39Speaker 2: Finds every on that back door.
- 3:41Speaker 4: Every wastes no time putting this one pass Fodar top shelf.
- 3:45Speaker 2: The Captain's on the board, won nothing.
- 3:48Speaker 3: Brian Harry goes Damn lad R back to the bench.
- 3:51Speaker 7: Extra attacker coming back on La Tobin and Steale shots.
- 4:02Speaker 6: Ellie Golfing in his second.
- 4:05Speaker 3: Of the night and the cracking back up by a
- 4:08Speaker 3: field goal four one.
- 4:10Speaker 2: Ellie told me to do it some great work because
- 4:12Speaker 2: he hunted.
- 4:12Speaker 4: Down that puck, picked it off and it got deflected
- 4:16Speaker 4: towards the flyer's net. He had nothing but space to
- 4:19Speaker 4: go after that and get it's seventh of the season.
- 4:22Speaker 3: The malansa down the left side. Blansai finds Elaine looks
- 4:25Speaker 3: in front Chuck.
- 4:34Speaker 6: Shacob Malon said, the nifty feet to Ryan Winterton, who
- 4:39Speaker 6: finishes the play. It's a tu one Seattle cracking lead
- 4:44Speaker 6: nineteen point two left.
- 4:46Speaker 3: Here in the period.
- 4:47Speaker 6: Court Jacob Malon said, that's his first point in the
- 4:51Speaker 6: National Hockey League.
- 4:52Speaker 4: But all starts backing the cracking in Joey the cord
- 4:56Speaker 4: fires the puck around the wall. Malonza gets it. He
- 4:59Speaker 4: goes flying on the wall. A couple Vancouver players bump
- 5:01Speaker 4: into each other. He's got a two on one going
- 5:04Speaker 4: down the wall with Winterton, great backhead feet from Alonso
- 5:08Speaker 4: La Crosse. Winterton finishes it off two to one. Congratulation
- 5:12Speaker 4: of a Lotson for his first point in NHL.
- 5:14Speaker 1: Well, do you remember when the playoff picture was ever
- 5:17Speaker 1: so dire with just one win in eleven games? Did
- 5:20Speaker 1: the crack can ever make a sharp U turn? Beginning
- 5:22Speaker 1: with San Jose and then blitzing their way through Anaheim
- 5:26Speaker 1: and Los Angeles, a three games sweep through Southern California,
- 5:31Speaker 1: all of those games won in regulation, then the Kraken
- 5:34Speaker 1: picking up right where they left off, beating the Philadelphia
- 5:37Speaker 1: Flyers for one back on Sunday, and then coming oh
- 5:40Speaker 1: so close. But a lot to talk about and a
- 5:42Speaker 1: lot to unpack after a three to two shootout loss
- 5:45Speaker 1: to the Vancouver Canucks. Let's get after it. The Cracking
- 5:48Speaker 1: are two points out of the playoff picture right now
- 5:51Speaker 1: in the Western Conference sixteen fourteen and seven. Their record
- 5:56Speaker 1: waking up today that is tied with Utah and they
- 5:58Speaker 1: are two points back up both the Kings and the Sharks,
- 6:02Speaker 1: who hold down the Western Conference wildcard spots. But on
- 6:06Speaker 1: the Crack inside they have games in hand, one on
- 6:09Speaker 1: the Kings, two on the Sharks, and the team they're
- 6:12Speaker 1: tied with right now in the Utah Mammoth, three games
- 6:15Speaker 1: in hand Nashville, by the way, one earlier today they're
- 6:18Speaker 1: one point ahead of the Crack and butt Crack and
- 6:21Speaker 1: have two games in hand. And guess who's facing off
- 6:23Speaker 1: tomorrow those two teams, the Kraken and the Predators. Was
- 6:27Speaker 1: still plenty of hockey to go as we head into
- 6:31Speaker 1: twenty twenty six. All right, roundtable time? All right? Coming
- 6:37Speaker 1: up out of this the Crack and four to zero
- 6:39Speaker 1: to one in five games to end the calendar year.
- 6:42Speaker 1: We're doing this roundtable A thirty two bar and grill
- 6:45Speaker 1: Mike Benton never fits you, al kiniski with you. Happy
- 6:48Speaker 1: New Year, by the way to you and yours fellas
- 6:51Speaker 1: a couple of days off. I think this leads us
- 6:54Speaker 1: year end of the question this evening, I kind of
- 6:56Speaker 1: tease this year from the Instagram part of this for
- 6:58Speaker 1: our usual game day question of the day, A we
- 7:00Speaker 1: all about going out are staying in?
- 7:02Speaker 3: Well?
- 7:03Speaker 1: Uh? Have you changed your mind yet? By the way, No,
- 7:05Speaker 1: I have not.
- 7:06Speaker 3: Don't I have not. Listen, I'm still down the clown
- 7:08Speaker 3: all right.
- 7:10Speaker 2: But he switched over to dad mode.
- 7:11Speaker 3: But I've switched over to that.
- 7:13Speaker 7: So what we're gonna do is, we're gonna have a
- 7:15Speaker 7: nice glass of sparkling grape juice. We're gonna wash the
- 7:18Speaker 7: East Coast ball drop, and then I'm gonna.
- 7:21Speaker 1: Go to nine, the New York City ball drop.
- 7:24Speaker 2: That's Plan A, but plan BES not completely off Plan B.
- 7:27Speaker 7: Hey, listen, I got a buddy of mine who works
- 7:30Speaker 7: for Michigan Women's basketball who's in town right now, and
- 7:33Speaker 7: he said.
- 7:33Speaker 3: I might text you later.
- 7:34Speaker 7: If he texted me later, I mean, we'll reevaluate, but
- 7:38Speaker 7: as of now, I'm gonna go get some lovely.
- 7:42Speaker 1: End of the conversation. You kind of work things that
- 7:44Speaker 1: say I will socially pay you back.
- 7:47Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 7:48Speaker 4: For me, it's Plan A, Plan A and Plan A.
- 7:49Speaker 4: I you know, we'll watch that East Coast ball drop.
- 7:52Speaker 4: We'll have a few glasses of uh, fermented grape juice,
- 7:57Speaker 4: maybe some bourbon, and uh I'd have to get somebody
- 8:00Speaker 4: to come pick me up if I was gonna go out.
- 8:02Speaker 2: You've got me, both of.
- 8:04Speaker 1: You got me on the bourbons right now, you got that.
- 8:07Speaker 1: I think there was only one option, and one option
- 8:09Speaker 1: here to celebrate the New year with something to take
- 8:12Speaker 1: it a little bit of a bit of the edge
- 8:13Speaker 1: off for to night. And that might be bourbon, whether
- 8:16Speaker 1: it's just you know, on the rocks, whether it might
- 8:18Speaker 1: be in diet coke neat well, and then again if
- 8:22Speaker 1: you're putting that with bourbon and also a big old
- 8:24Speaker 1: ice cube, it's not exactly.
- 8:25Speaker 4: Neat, but yeah, and so great this time of year
- 8:28Speaker 4: two when it's cold outside, that warm bourbon. In fact,
- 8:30Speaker 4: driving in this morning it was really cold and foggy.
- 8:33Speaker 4: I don't know about you, but I think I saw
- 8:34Speaker 4: the mystery machine out.
- 8:35Speaker 1: There, guys. And then my forties here, I don't. I
- 8:37Speaker 1: don't go out as much. Even then. If you've seen
- 8:39Speaker 1: the whole Instagram thing where they let people in for
- 8:43Speaker 1: New Year's Eve in New York City and you had
- 8:45Speaker 1: to stay there literally at about three o'clock and not
- 8:48Speaker 1: go anywhere else, you lose your spot for the the entire.
- 8:51Speaker 2: Day, so they do.
- 8:53Speaker 1: So.
- 8:53Speaker 7: My wife's from Jersey and she's been on the ball
- 8:56Speaker 7: Drop once. One of her really good friends. Her father
- 9:00Speaker 7: lives as an apartment in Times Square. He's in a
- 9:03Speaker 7: tax bracket. We can't even see. But she went down
- 9:07Speaker 7: there once when she was in her twenties and hung
- 9:09Speaker 7: out there and it was great. But yeah, like, you
- 9:11Speaker 7: get there at three o'clock in the afternoon, you stay
- 9:14Speaker 7: all day. You can't go into the restaurants, you can't. Like,
- 9:18Speaker 7: you're stuck in Times Square for ten hours to see
- 9:23Speaker 7: this ball drop. And then when it's over apparently again
- 9:26Speaker 7: I've never been, but she goes, the ball drops, you cheer, whatever,
- 9:30Speaker 7: and then you're like, well, shoot, now what we gotta
- 9:33Speaker 7: go home.
- 9:34Speaker 3: So at twelve ten, yeah, twelve.
- 9:36Speaker 7: Fifteen, there's a mad dash for the trains, a mad
- 9:40Speaker 7: dash of the cabs, and like you're still there another
- 9:43Speaker 7: two hours trying to get home.
- 9:45Speaker 3: So this is a twelve hour endeavor, sober.
- 9:48Speaker 2: Or mad dash to McDonald's for some midnight nuts.
- 9:50Speaker 1: See for me, now, I'm in my forties. I'm not
- 9:52Speaker 1: in my twenties. I'm more about trying to get up
- 9:54Speaker 1: and watch the roast paradorily. Moral of the story, we
- 9:57Speaker 1: are not clowning on anybody going out here. If you
- 9:59Speaker 1: want to do so, more power to you again. The
- 10:03Speaker 1: world is your oyster, and once more, there is no
- 10:06Speaker 1: wrong answer to celebrate New Year's but just please be safe, safe,
- 10:10Speaker 1: and we'll look forward to seeing you tomorrow. For the
- 10:11Speaker 1: Krack and the Nashville Predators. All right, last time we
- 10:14Speaker 1: had this show, we were heading into Anaheim. So the
- 10:17Speaker 1: recap includes Ducks, Kings, Flyers, and the Canucks. And I
- 10:22Speaker 1: think for me the theme from these last four games
- 10:25Speaker 1: the Kraken are on their way to a season rebirth
- 10:28Speaker 1: because they've gotten this thing back on the tracks. They're
- 10:30Speaker 1: in the playoff race, and they got wins in Anaheim,
- 10:34Speaker 1: in La without Brandon montor Jayden Schwartz, Vince Dunn, Jared
- 10:39Speaker 1: McCann that combination bodies are getting healthier. But what a
- 10:43Speaker 1: way to end the calendar year at four zero and
- 10:45Speaker 1: one with a lineup that you thought you had to
- 10:48Speaker 1: roll with from October became as close to decimated talks
- 10:53Speaker 1: or of course, you know, swirling here about this roster
- 10:55Speaker 1: with about roughly a month away from the Olympic break
- 10:58Speaker 1: and in the trade deadline coming up in March. We'll
- 11:01Speaker 1: see what a GM Jason Bartow wants to do. But
- 11:04Speaker 1: for me, the moral of the story is that no
- 11:07Speaker 1: matter what type of game you show up with in
- 11:10Speaker 1: any shape or form, rain or shine, goaltending stabilizes everything.
- 11:17Speaker 1: That for me was the common thread. That for me
- 11:20Speaker 1: was the common theme, and the young kids, game after
- 11:24Speaker 1: game are making more of an impression.
- 11:26Speaker 4: Yeah, I agree with Mike you And the thing I
- 11:28Speaker 4: liked about the last you know, four or five games
- 11:31Speaker 4: is that that three game winning streak prior to the
- 11:34Speaker 4: Christmas break is great. You go into three days off,
- 11:37Speaker 4: you're feeling good about that. But the importance of connecting
- 11:40Speaker 4: that to that first game coming out of the break,
- 11:42Speaker 4: which they won as well, it was really important because
- 11:45Speaker 4: it's easier to keep that momentum going. You lose that
- 11:47Speaker 4: first game coming out of the break, you're like, here
- 11:49Speaker 4: we go. We're back, you know, into a losing situation.
- 11:51Speaker 4: We got to stop this. They didn't. They came out
- 11:53Speaker 4: and they won that game. They connected it. They got
- 11:55Speaker 4: points in the fit in the fifth game as well,
- 11:57Speaker 4: so now points in five straight. I think that it's
- 12:00Speaker 4: important for this team to recognize that although they're not
- 12:03Speaker 4: one hundred percent healthy yet, when they start to get
- 12:06Speaker 4: some of these players back. Jayden Schwartz, I saw skating
- 12:09Speaker 4: this morning, Brandon Montour still out. When they start to
- 12:12Speaker 4: get some of these players back, they don't let off
- 12:15Speaker 4: the gas. Ye you know, as a player, I know
- 12:18Speaker 4: that feeling. You're top line forward, your top goalie, whoever
- 12:22Speaker 4: comes back into the lineup, and you think, oh, I
- 12:24Speaker 4: don't have to play as hard now because so and
- 12:26Speaker 4: so is coming back into the lineup. The key is
- 12:28Speaker 4: to keep playing the way they've been playing and add
- 12:31Speaker 4: that additional talent to the roster. And now instead of
- 12:34Speaker 4: three two games, three one games, it becomes five to
- 12:36Speaker 4: two games, you know, four to one games.
- 12:38Speaker 2: That sort of thing.
- 12:39Speaker 7: I think they've gotten back to what's made them successful
- 12:41Speaker 7: this season. You go five games in a row, you've
- 12:44Speaker 7: allowed one or two goals in each of those games.
- 12:47Speaker 7: You've been able to fill the net as well, with
- 12:50Speaker 7: three or four goals in each of those games outside
- 12:52Speaker 7: of the shootout loss. But you know that for me,
- 12:55Speaker 7: it was that it's the full team buying. And when
- 12:59Speaker 7: you go through slow al you know this. You tend
- 13:02Speaker 7: to grip the stick of it too tight. You tend
- 13:04Speaker 7: to overthink things a bit, You tend to want to
- 13:08Speaker 7: maybe be someone you're not. You question things exactly, But
- 13:12Speaker 7: I think now the last week and a half, this
- 13:14Speaker 7: team is getting back to that identity to what has
- 13:17Speaker 7: made them successful.
- 13:19Speaker 3: But Philip Grubauer as well.
- 13:20Speaker 7: I mean goldening in general, but I think Grubauer, for sure,
- 13:23Speaker 7: this has been the resurgence that we've been looking for
- 13:26Speaker 7: for him, and I think this is this season is
- 13:31Speaker 7: more than just a couple of good games for him.
- 13:35Speaker 7: Dare I say that. I think he's back to playoff
- 13:38Speaker 7: groomy and we love talking about playoff groovy and what we.
- 13:42Speaker 3: Saw two years ago, three years ago. Yeah, no, my goodness.
- 13:45Speaker 7: But you know he's getting back to that and it's
- 13:48Speaker 7: been really nice to see. But for me, this last
- 13:51Speaker 7: week has been all about this team simplifying their game,
- 13:56Speaker 7: not trying to do too much, and then getting the
- 13:59Speaker 7: possible results because of that.
- 14:01Speaker 4: Well, well, I would just add one more thing on that.
- 14:04Speaker 4: As far as goalies go, over the last two seasons,
- 14:05Speaker 4: you've seen Joey Decord ascend to the number one spot,
- 14:09Speaker 4: and it's because of his play, yeah, less so than
- 14:12Speaker 4: maybe Grubauer's play, but he's a senate to that number
- 14:14Speaker 4: one spot. Now, this being my third season with the team,
- 14:18Speaker 4: you're seeing Philip Grubauer get back to where he was
- 14:21Speaker 4: three seasons ago. And you've got two goaltenders that are
- 14:23Speaker 4: at the top of their game right now.
- 14:25Speaker 1: Team say percentage right now for the Kraken, they are
- 14:28Speaker 1: eighth right now in the NHL, and team say percentage
- 14:31Speaker 1: at nine to zero one. Again, goaltending stabilizes everything that good,
- 14:36Speaker 1: everything sounds good. Tell me you would not have taken
- 14:40Speaker 1: this back about roughly three months ago. Ellie told that
- 14:43Speaker 1: we had to talk about him because what a month
- 14:45Speaker 1: that he's put up here, second Star of the week,
- 14:48Speaker 1: just putting a points here by the boat load, held
- 14:50Speaker 1: out the score sheet against Vancouver, but he's shooting the
- 14:52Speaker 1: pocket ton right now. Yeah, six shots against Vancouver, four
- 14:56Speaker 1: shots against Philadelphia, and then we get to the defensive
- 14:59Speaker 1: game here for him as well. And if you can
- 15:03Speaker 1: believe this, heading into the Vancouver game, he was actually
- 15:07Speaker 1: this team's leading score if you can believe it right now.
- 15:11Speaker 1: And there's been a ton of stability issues, I think
- 15:14Speaker 1: with injuries, bodies in, bodies out. But you know, after
- 15:18Speaker 1: what was maybe a bit of a slow start, twenty
- 15:22Speaker 1: five points for him in thirty seven games. That is
- 15:24Speaker 1: tied right now for the Krack and lead on this
- 15:27Speaker 1: team with Jordan Eberley. So is there another level we
- 15:30Speaker 1: could see out of Ellie Tolvenan or is this just
- 15:34Speaker 1: more of the same thing that we should expect.
- 15:36Speaker 7: I think, honestly, a little bit of Colin Man and
- 15:38Speaker 7: Colin b I think we talked about the crack and
- 15:41Speaker 7: overall simplifying their game in the last week and a half.
- 15:44Speaker 7: I think Ellie tolvan And we talked to him a
- 15:45Speaker 7: couple of games ago and he said he's feeling a
- 15:48Speaker 7: lot more confident right now in his game. He's hitting,
- 15:50Speaker 7: he's shooting, he's he's defending well. And then this is
- 15:54Speaker 7: the Tolvenin that this team claimed off waivers a few
- 15:58Speaker 7: years ago, right, you saw the potential former first round pick.
- 16:02Speaker 7: You're seeing that now. You've seen it in waves with him.
- 16:06Speaker 7: But I think more so in the last two weeks
- 16:08Speaker 7: he has really started to play that power forward game
- 16:14Speaker 7: that we're looking for. And also too, with Schwartz out,
- 16:18Speaker 7: with the injuries that we've had, he's been given an
- 16:21Speaker 7: elevated role and I think he's been taking that baton
- 16:25Speaker 7: and running with it and it's been really good to see.
- 16:28Speaker 4: Yeah, I also think too, you know, and Everett and
- 16:30Speaker 4: I talk about this in the broadcast a lot.
- 16:32Speaker 2: Is I love the physical side of his game.
- 16:34Speaker 4: Yeah, I think he creates so much just by his
- 16:37Speaker 4: physical side, the way the way he wins puck battles
- 16:40Speaker 4: behind the net. That pass he sent out to Eberly
- 16:43Speaker 4: that a night, it was it was purely a result
- 16:45Speaker 4: of his for check, a great move, bounce in the
- 16:47Speaker 4: puck off the back of the net, but then a
- 16:49Speaker 4: great pass out out to uh out to the point there.
- 16:52Speaker 4: But his physicality is so impressive. And me, he had
- 16:54Speaker 4: six shots in that philadelph or Philadelphia game, so it's
- 16:57Speaker 4: not for lack of shooting that he was kept off
- 16:59Speaker 4: the score wor sheet.
- 17:01Speaker 2: You know, two.
- 17:02Speaker 4: Goals for assists in his last four games. This is
- 17:04Speaker 4: a weekly show, so I only go back four games
- 17:07Speaker 4: plus five in that timeframe.
- 17:08Speaker 2: As well.
- 17:09Speaker 4: I think that that he just like Grubauer, he's playing
- 17:12Speaker 4: at the top of his game right now.
- 17:14Speaker 7: And I think too, like his line that he's on
- 17:17Speaker 7: right now, like that line is performing very very low.
- 17:19Speaker 3: But I also loved her. If him playing.
- 17:23Speaker 7: As well as he's playing right now can help maybe
- 17:26Speaker 7: alleviate some pressure on a guy.
- 17:28Speaker 3: Like Shade Right or Matty Beniz.
- 17:30Speaker 7: Who you know, Maddie, We've seen his game go to
- 17:34Speaker 7: a tool full two way game. I mean, he's got
- 17:37Speaker 7: to be already, for my money, one of the best
- 17:40Speaker 7: two way centers in the division, if definitely not in
- 17:43Speaker 7: the lead in the conference at least, But he's not
- 17:46Speaker 7: scoring as much as I think we would like him
- 17:49Speaker 7: to score four goals on the ear. But I think
- 17:51Speaker 7: if a guy like tolben It can play that way,
- 17:53Speaker 7: if he can start drawing some more of those tougher
- 17:56Speaker 7: matchups and continuing to have success, then maybe can you
- 18:00Speaker 7: open up some opportunities for Matty Vaneers or as Shane
- 18:02Speaker 7: Wright to find their scoring touch as well.
- 18:06Speaker 1: Speaking of physical I want to touch on the fourth
- 18:08Speaker 1: line here because I mean, it seems like it's lather
- 18:10Speaker 1: reins repeat. But how can we not avoid the attention
- 18:14Speaker 1: that Ben Meyers, Ty Cartier, Jacob Mallanson and the combination
- 18:18Speaker 1: of Ryan Winterton all them together three out of four
- 18:22Speaker 1: here for the last few games. I begin with Milanson,
- 18:25Speaker 1: who after the Vancouver game where he had four hits.
- 18:29Speaker 1: If I can bring this up now for you, drum
- 18:32Speaker 1: roll his total here on the entire season, thirty four
- 18:37Speaker 1: hits in eight games. Oh, thirty four hits in eight games.
- 18:42Speaker 3: Stop it.
- 18:42Speaker 1: He is hitting everything that moves right now. Ty Cartier
- 18:47Speaker 1: and his physical presence continues to make an impact he
- 18:50Speaker 1: set out recently. But then you get Ben Myers and
- 18:52Speaker 1: the attention he's brought for his abrasive game winning face
- 18:55Speaker 1: offs as well, and then Ryan Winterton, who steps in
- 18:59Speaker 1: in the Vancouver game, he and Malanson connect for what
- 19:03Speaker 1: was an exquisite goal late in the first period. Here,
- 19:06Speaker 1: the point I'm making about this line is that with
- 19:09Speaker 1: all the roster flux and then the Mason Marshman trade
- 19:12Speaker 1: moving along here before the San Jose game that has begun,
- 19:16Speaker 1: I think to correlate with a period where you're starting
- 19:19Speaker 1: to see something grow here. When you give Cartier, Myers,
- 19:24Speaker 1: Malanson and then last game Winterton on that line a chance,
- 19:27Speaker 1: they are proven that you cannot take them off the ice,
- 19:31Speaker 1: and more so, there aren't just hitting and going out
- 19:34Speaker 1: of their way and taking themselves out of the play.
- 19:36Speaker 1: But Lane Lambert made a great point after the Canucks game,
- 19:39Speaker 1: they're doing this here with responsibility.
- 19:41Speaker 4: Well, first of all, there isn't another line on this
- 19:43Speaker 4: cracking team that does what they do, all right, No,
- 19:46Speaker 4: not on their line. They go out, they play physical,
- 19:50Speaker 4: they're responsible defensively, and they jump on their offensive chances
- 19:53Speaker 4: as we saw last game when they can. And not
- 19:55Speaker 4: only that, but they are fast, yes, certainly within Enterton
- 20:00Speaker 4: on that line Winterton Myers, Myers is skating. Impresses me
- 20:04Speaker 4: every single game. Uh and Malonson is sneaky fast as well. Yeah,
- 20:09Speaker 4: you know, whether it's getting too a post.
- 20:11Speaker 3: Oh my goodness, turned the corner.
- 20:13Speaker 4: I mean not only that the assist, but the speed
- 20:16Speaker 4: to get himself in that position, the pass itself. Let's
- 20:19Speaker 4: remember it was his office backhand and it was a
- 20:21Speaker 4: laser tape to tape pass on the on the back end.
- 20:24Speaker 4: I can't I can't impress how difficult that is at
- 20:27Speaker 4: full speed to make that accurate of a pass to
- 20:29Speaker 4: put it right in a spot for Winterton to finish it.
- 20:33Speaker 4: But the speed of that line is so impressive, and
- 20:35Speaker 4: the fact that you can cycle any of of the
- 20:38Speaker 4: wingers in and out of that line, you're gonna get
- 20:40Speaker 4: the same thing. I think if you move Winterton off
- 20:43Speaker 4: and put Cartia in, you get a little more physicality.
- 20:45Speaker 4: You put Winterton on, you move Krtia off, you probably
- 20:48Speaker 4: get a little more offense. That's not a hit of either.
- 20:50Speaker 4: What's just the it's their levels of their talents. That's
- 20:53Speaker 4: that's the only difference between those two.
- 20:54Speaker 7: They're playing like a line that has everything to lose
- 20:58Speaker 7: and and everything to gain. The way that that chemistry
- 21:04Speaker 7: is so fluid, it is so apparent.
- 21:06Speaker 3: These guys make.
- 21:08Speaker 7: A difference every every night on the ice. And and
- 21:11Speaker 7: if they're not scoring, okay, they're hitting. If they're not hitting,
- 21:15Speaker 7: they're driving offense. They're they're they're wearing. Now the team's
- 21:19Speaker 7: opposite other lines, you're putting them out, maybe one.
- 21:23Speaker 3: Or two extra shifts to give.
- 21:26Speaker 7: The McCanns, the Everlyes and and the Tolvinn's a little
- 21:29Speaker 7: bit of extra time to recover. They have done everything right.
- 21:33Speaker 7: And and Mike, you.
- 21:34Speaker 3: Said it, you can't take them off the ice.
- 21:36Speaker 7: And you said to me the other day, in a
- 21:39Speaker 7: world where Jared McCann comes back to the lineup three
- 21:42Speaker 7: years ago, we're sending one of them.
- 21:44Speaker 2: Back to Valley.
- 21:46Speaker 7: Yeah right now, not anymore, because they they have proven
- 21:51Speaker 7: too valuable to break up. Uh And and as long
- 21:55Speaker 7: as they continue to play that way, you're gonna be
- 21:58Speaker 7: seeing a lot more of those four and I don't
- 22:00Speaker 7: think you can go wrong with the combination of anyone
- 22:03Speaker 7: on the eyes.
- 22:03Speaker 4: Yeah, and I'll just add one more common to the
- 22:05Speaker 4: There's no other line that does what they do out there,
- 22:08Speaker 4: especially when car chase on that line, because when car
- 22:11Speaker 4: chase on that line, you get two wingers Ben Myer's
- 22:14Speaker 4: not as much, but two wingers that seek out physicality.
- 22:17Speaker 4: There isn't another line that's primary objective on the wings
- 22:21Speaker 4: is to seek out physicality. And then you add that
- 22:23Speaker 4: speed element in there. You want that fourth line rolling
- 22:25Speaker 4: on a regular cycle.
- 22:26Speaker 1: Two things I notice here from this line. One at home,
- 22:30Speaker 1: you put Malanson out there. Every time he lays a
- 22:32Speaker 1: body in and the glass rattles, you hear a stir
- 22:35Speaker 1: out of the crowd. Yes, And it's something that kind
- 22:38Speaker 1: of takes me a little bit back here to when
- 22:40Speaker 1: this was very prevalent back in the nineties and two thousands.
- 22:43Speaker 1: Now I get a different game now. But yet successful
- 22:46Speaker 1: teams always have an edge. They have a level of
- 22:49Speaker 1: abrasiveness that a line like this brings. I think to me,
- 22:53Speaker 1: it's so important. And secondly, when you say, well, hey,
- 22:56Speaker 1: if they're playing so well, why do you play a
- 22:57Speaker 1: more well? You can't have it both ways because they
- 23:00Speaker 1: sort of a certain role. Malanson plays about eight minutes
- 23:02Speaker 1: a game, card Shave about roughly eleven, Ben Meyers ten minutes.
- 23:06Speaker 1: You know, a game, et cetera, et cetera. But the
- 23:08Speaker 1: point is here, it's almost like a successful pitching staff
- 23:12Speaker 1: in baseball, where one pitcher does well, it's a chain
- 23:15Speaker 1: reaction the torches passed on to the next guy in here.
- 23:20Speaker 1: In this sense, you have one line that goes out
- 23:22Speaker 1: and creates a stir. They do something positive, they make
- 23:25Speaker 1: an effect that then creates a chain reaction here for
- 23:29Speaker 1: the next line to go out and build out that energy.
- 23:31Speaker 3: For their role.
- 23:33Speaker 7: I feel like this might be Seattle's most effective line
- 23:39Speaker 7: again based on their role.
- 23:41Speaker 3: They're not gonna score one hundred points for you, but you're.
- 23:44Speaker 2: Not gonna be out in the last minute.
- 23:46Speaker 1: Yeah right, But.
- 23:46Speaker 7: Based on their role, this might be this team's most
- 23:50Speaker 7: effective line since year two.
- 23:52Speaker 1: They have fan favorite potential, by the way.
- 23:54Speaker 7: But but I think of Geeky Sproung Donado that fourth
- 23:59Speaker 7: line for year two, one hundred and one points from
- 24:02Speaker 7: that line.
- 24:03Speaker 3: We've seen what Geeky is and I don't have done.
- 24:05Speaker 7: In the NHL ever, since sprungs over in Russia right now,
- 24:08Speaker 7: tearing it up over there. But I feel like this,
- 24:11Speaker 7: I would love to get your opinion, especially for you
- 24:13Speaker 7: because you were here that year. Yeah, this, for my money,
- 24:17Speaker 7: might be the most effective line for their role.
- 24:22Speaker 3: Yeah, since that line we had two three years ago.
- 24:25Speaker 1: You're absolutely right. And I think because you had to
- 24:27Speaker 1: use players like Geeky Donado's Sprung in a sheltered role,
- 24:32Speaker 1: you can't overplay them and overexpose them. Yet you find
- 24:36Speaker 1: a way to put them out at the right time
- 24:39Speaker 1: in the right spots, and they're going to be effective.
- 24:42Speaker 1: Same goes here for this line, but they operate in
- 24:44Speaker 1: a bit of a different fashion. Where I go back
- 24:46Speaker 1: to it again, if you're playing physical, you're hitting, you're
- 24:50Speaker 1: taking guys you know, on the opposition out of the play,
- 24:53Speaker 1: and you are creating energy not just in the building,
- 24:56Speaker 1: but you are creating energy for your bench for that
- 24:59Speaker 1: next line to go and do exactly like they do.
- 25:03Speaker 1: That's a positive chain reaction. I think that really has
- 25:07Speaker 1: been I think unseen since that second year when you
- 25:10Speaker 1: had Geeky and company on that fourth line.
- 25:12Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 25:12Speaker 4: I guess the one last thing I'd say about this
- 25:13Speaker 4: line and when I think about this line, I think
- 25:15Speaker 4: about them as four players, especially as this team becomes
- 25:18Speaker 4: more healthy. Winterton's been on that third line a little bit,
- 25:20Speaker 4: but you know, think about them in terms of Malanson
- 25:24Speaker 4: Myers in the middle and Carchay or Winterton on that wing.
- 25:29Speaker 4: I'll say something a little bit controversial.
- 25:31Speaker 2: Ooh.
- 25:33Speaker 4: I think that Malonson knows that he has to compete
- 25:37Speaker 4: to stay here, and I think he's looking at the
- 25:39Speaker 4: wingers on his line, whether that's Winterton or Karcha. Is
- 25:43Speaker 4: I have to be better than one of those two guys.
- 25:45Speaker 4: Now that's not to say Winterton couldn't bump up to
- 25:47Speaker 4: the third line and they could stay together. But if
- 25:50Speaker 4: this team is one hundred percent healthy, one of those
- 25:53Speaker 4: guys probably is a healthy scratch. And I think Malonson's thinking,
- 25:56Speaker 4: I want to show them.
- 25:57Speaker 1: And that is not a bad thing. I want to
- 25:58Speaker 1: show the coach internal competition, and this team has talked
- 26:01Speaker 1: about ever since this last summer.
- 26:02Speaker 4: Yeah, and again, this is a team sport. You support
- 26:05Speaker 4: each other, you stand up for each other. But at
- 26:06Speaker 4: the end of the day, it's also a business, and
- 26:09Speaker 4: Malonson wants to be here just as much as Carcier does.
- 26:12Speaker 4: As much as Winterton does, but he knows that there's
- 26:14Speaker 4: only room for two wingers in that line, and if
- 26:16Speaker 4: he's going to be one of them, he's got to
- 26:18Speaker 4: be the hardest working, most effective winger out there.
- 26:20Speaker 1: He also had, by the way, I think one of
- 26:21Speaker 1: the top three soundbites for the intermission of all time
- 26:24Speaker 1: on these radio airwaves and talking about Yeah, that first
- 26:28Speaker 1: point puck is nice, but he wants his first goal.
- 26:30Speaker 1: He'll just get the first point puck to his dodge.
- 26:32Speaker 2: Yea.
- 26:34Speaker 7: As we're sitting here recording that's swagger. By the way,
- 26:37Speaker 7: as we're sitting here recording this before practice today, there's
- 26:41Speaker 7: three goals on the ice. Up until three minutes ago,
- 26:44Speaker 7: there were two players on the ice, Ben Myers and
- 26:47Speaker 7: Jacob Alansa. They were the first two out here. Cale
- 26:50Speaker 7: Flury has now joined them. But again, these are guys,
- 26:54Speaker 7: and i'll throw Kale and that as well. These are
- 26:56Speaker 7: guys that understand that they're playing time unfortunately is not guaranteed,
- 27:02Speaker 7: so they're going to try to make sure that they
- 27:04Speaker 7: get every ounce out of this NHL experience and to
- 27:09Speaker 7: keep themselves in the lineup as they can.
- 27:11Speaker 4: Yeah, I know that this is a signal that I
- 27:13Speaker 4: want to get better. I want to be first on
- 27:15Speaker 4: the ice, I want to be lost off the ice,
- 27:17Speaker 4: And this is how you do it. Yeah, practice doesn't
- 27:19Speaker 4: start for half an hour. All three of them are
- 27:21Speaker 4: out there on the.
- 27:21Speaker 1: Ice before we get to Satiarsha. Here in our conversation,
- 27:24Speaker 1: I want to touch on Yonni Newman sent to Coachella Valley,
- 27:27Speaker 1: which this year twenty four points four goals, I mean,
- 27:30Speaker 1: is not going to exactly turn heads. But we're talking
- 27:33Speaker 1: about still a player who is dealing with his first
- 27:36Speaker 1: full season in the NHL, and for different players, that
- 27:39Speaker 1: can certainly be an adjustment period. But I think we
- 27:41Speaker 1: have to understand is that Newman is still very much
- 27:44Speaker 1: a work in progress. That shot is there, it's major
- 27:48Speaker 1: league quality, it will be great on the power play,
- 27:51Speaker 1: but there are still other parts of his game that,
- 27:54Speaker 1: from what we've seen, needs a little bit more work.
- 27:57Speaker 1: And there are two ways to go about this year.
- 28:00Speaker 1: Number one, do you keep him up here and just
- 28:03Speaker 1: let him sit in the press box and observe, or
- 28:06Speaker 1: do you sent him to the AHL where he's gonna
- 28:08Speaker 1: be getting big minutes, let him contribute, let him find
- 28:12Speaker 1: out what being not just not fensive player, but a
- 28:15Speaker 1: two hundred foot player in what Laine Lambert wants is
- 28:18Speaker 1: all about. And we talked about this here before. Guys,
- 28:21Speaker 1: there's only one way to get better, and it's reps, reps,
- 28:24Speaker 1: reps and more reps.
- 28:25Speaker 4: I think with Janni Neuman, you know, his last five
- 28:27Speaker 4: games before he got sent down, he was starting to
- 28:30Speaker 4: slowly turn the corner a little bit. And what I
- 28:32Speaker 4: mean by that is that you started you started to
- 28:35Speaker 4: see him play a little more physical. He was getting
- 28:37Speaker 4: onto pucks first, or if he wasn't, he was throwing
- 28:40Speaker 4: the body as he was getting there. I think the
- 28:42Speaker 4: issue was it was happening too slowly. I think the
- 28:45Speaker 4: coaches wanted to see more of that, more puck battles,
- 28:48Speaker 4: and I was, honestly, I think his skating needs to
- 28:50Speaker 4: get a little bit better. Does it get better here
- 28:54Speaker 4: practicing but not playing or down in Coachella That remains
- 28:57Speaker 4: to be seen. But if I'm Yanni Newman, I'm on
- 29:00Speaker 4: Coachella telling the coaches, I want to get better at
- 29:03Speaker 4: skating while I'm here, I want to get better at
- 29:05Speaker 4: at my two hundred foot game. I want to get
- 29:07Speaker 4: better physical, physic, physical, in my physical game. But I
- 29:10Speaker 4: also want to continue to shoot the puck, so he
- 29:12Speaker 4: wants he should see power play time as well. But
- 29:15Speaker 4: his game needs to get more rounded right now. Unfortunately,
- 29:18Speaker 4: he's like a heavyweight fighter with just a right hook.
- 29:21Speaker 4: He's gonna work on his his jabs, its uppercuts, his
- 29:24Speaker 4: his blocks, that sort of thing to become a more
- 29:26Speaker 4: rounded player.
- 29:27Speaker 7: I was hoping that we were gonna see with with
- 29:29Speaker 7: Schwartz on the on the sidelines. I was hoping we
- 29:31Speaker 7: were going to see a little bit more of that
- 29:33Speaker 7: power forward game development. And I remember and I were
- 29:35Speaker 7: talking about it. I'd love to see him go to
- 29:37Speaker 7: the corners. I'd love to see him get a goal
- 29:40Speaker 7: off his face, battle to the.
- 29:42Speaker 3: Front of the net.
- 29:43Speaker 7: And and you're right, it was starting to get there,
- 29:46Speaker 7: but it wasn't coming fast enough.
- 29:48Speaker 3: And and Yannie Newman is.
- 29:50Speaker 7: Probably a top three player in the AHL. He's too
- 29:53Speaker 7: good for the AHL. And that's okay. He's got to
- 29:56Speaker 7: go down, he has to dominate. He's gotta to find
- 30:00Speaker 7: these other areas of his game.
- 30:02Speaker 3: We'll see him again.
- 30:03Speaker 2: Yeah, he'll be the number one call.
- 30:04Speaker 7: It will be the first call up, back up, And honestly,
- 30:07Speaker 7: this potentially could be seen as a bit of a
- 30:09Speaker 7: wake up call. It wouldn't surprise me if the Crack
- 30:12Speaker 7: can keep him down there for five games and before
- 30:15Speaker 7: they go on that East Coast road trip they bring
- 30:18Speaker 7: them back up going into Carolina. You have to say, hey,
- 30:21Speaker 7: you got five or six games down there. Work on
- 30:23Speaker 7: some things. This is not permanent. Who knows, We don't
- 30:25Speaker 7: know what's in the minds of the management group and
- 30:27Speaker 7: all of that. But I see this as an opportunity
- 30:30Speaker 7: to get better and maybe a bit of a jolt,
- 30:32Speaker 7: a bit of a wake up call for him.
- 30:34Speaker 4: And if he does get better, the guy that he
- 30:36Speaker 4: could eventually replace, who knows when is Ellie Tolvenan. Yeah,
- 30:40Speaker 4: Ellie Tolvenan's game is exactly the game that Yanni Newman
- 30:43Speaker 4: should develop.
- 30:44Speaker 2: Us all right to.
- 30:48Speaker 1: The Deacon Plumbing hotline. We go right now, good friend
- 30:51Speaker 1: of ours the program here and of the podcast as well,
- 30:53Speaker 1: Sat to Yarshah. He is a game night host for
- 30:55Speaker 1: the Canucks on Sports and at six point fifty, joining
- 30:58Speaker 1: us here on Crack Weekly. My friend, Sat Tire, Happy
- 31:02Speaker 1: New Year, Happy holidays. How were they for you, by
- 31:04Speaker 1: the way, and are you ready here for the crunch
- 31:07Speaker 1: coming up here in January.
- 31:09Speaker 8: Well, yeah, we'll say to you happy holidays, Mary, Christmas everybody,
- 31:12Speaker 8: and a happy New Year. And it's coming up tomorrow.
- 31:13Speaker 8: I'm sure everybody has good plans and stay safe and
- 31:16Speaker 8: have a good time.
- 31:16Speaker 9: And they've been great. You know, it's you know what
- 31:18Speaker 9: it's like here.
- 31:19Speaker 8: It's kind of a mix of holiday and also working
- 31:21Speaker 8: and working the games, but have days off in between.
- 31:23Speaker 8: So it's been really nice. But you know, I love
- 31:26Speaker 8: this time of year. It's good to see some family
- 31:28Speaker 8: and everyone seems to be in a pretty good mood
- 31:30Speaker 8: for the most party. But I mean, it all depends
- 31:32Speaker 8: on your travel schedule, I.
- 31:33Speaker 1: Guess, yeah, And it's going to come up here pretty
- 31:35Speaker 1: hot and heavy here on the crack inside here. But
- 31:37Speaker 1: we're going to get into i think, first off, last night,
- 31:40Speaker 1: and we're going to be seeing a lot of these
- 31:42Speaker 1: two teams I think coming up here and then the
- 31:45Speaker 1: not too distant future, especially twice this week from the
- 31:49Speaker 1: crack inside of this they fought hard to get into overtime.
- 31:53Speaker 1: But let a little bit on the table from the
- 31:56Speaker 1: Canucks standpoint, what kind of a spot did they leave
- 32:01Speaker 1: from last night as far as how they performed and
- 32:04Speaker 1: maybe how it also affects them right now with their
- 32:07Speaker 1: view in this Western Conference playoff picture.
- 32:09Speaker 8: Well, and I think that's the you know, if you
- 32:11Speaker 8: ask fans in Vancouver, some are more focused on finishing
- 32:14Speaker 8: thirty second.
- 32:15Speaker 9: They want a high draft pick there.
- 32:17Speaker 8: You know, there's been a lot of talk about rebuilding
- 32:19Speaker 8: and the team embracing the suck, so to seek and
- 32:21Speaker 8: being bad for a few years. But we'll see if
- 32:23Speaker 8: that ultimately happens that way. But I thought last night
- 32:26Speaker 8: the krack And were the better team for the most part.
- 32:28Speaker 8: I thought the Crackner were better in the first, they're
- 32:30Speaker 8: better in the third. And Kevin lankinin really stole the
- 32:33Speaker 8: show for Vancouver espeently, Yes, especially in the shoot up,
- 32:36Speaker 8: but also early in the game. I mean there was
- 32:38Speaker 8: the breakaway right away from coppococ coke lank and they
- 32:41Speaker 8: made the glove. Say Ben Myers had the rush going
- 32:43Speaker 8: in to him. There was a great chance from Eberley.
- 32:46Speaker 8: There was another chance on the power play afterwards as well,
- 32:48Speaker 8: and lank they made some huge stops and you got
- 32:51Speaker 8: to get the connects credit. I thought they played well
- 32:52Speaker 8: in the second and you never apologize for getting great
- 32:55Speaker 8: goaltending but I do think it was it was a
- 32:57Speaker 8: somewhat of a stolen win to some degree because I thought,
- 33:00Speaker 8: you know, that Cracking on the totality of the night
- 33:02Speaker 8: were better. And one thing that Crack and I think
- 33:04Speaker 8: have done a better job of, and you guys know
- 33:06Speaker 8: this better than me, is defensively. They've been pretty good
- 33:09Speaker 8: this year for the most part, now giving up a ton,
- 33:11Speaker 8: and I thought for the most part last night they
- 33:13Speaker 8: were superior defensively. But you know, sometimes you get goaltending
- 33:16Speaker 8: and you get some saves and some time they scoring.
- 33:18Speaker 9: And you know, for Vancouver, they're.
- 33:20Speaker 8: Twenty ninth now in the league, I believe, and that
- 33:22Speaker 8: can change really quickly. It doesn't look like the playoffs
- 33:26Speaker 8: are a realistic, you know, end goal here for Vancouver,
- 33:30Speaker 8: even the games they won, they're five and two in
- 33:32Speaker 8: their last seven. And you never, you know, you know,
- 33:35Speaker 8: boo the wins because hey, you give the team credit
- 33:38Speaker 8: or finding ways to win. But a lot of it's
- 33:39Speaker 8: been Lanka and being stellarn to shootout. Last game he
- 33:42Speaker 8: won against was against Boston, this game last night against Seattle,
- 33:45Speaker 8: thatcher dem goal was sensational on that five game road trip,
- 33:49Speaker 8: and they've found ways to win because of their goaltending,
- 33:52Speaker 8: and sometimes goaltending a carrier pretty far, but it's also
- 33:55Speaker 8: not a recipe for sustained success game in a game out.
- 33:58Speaker 8: So I'm not sure that they who is ready to
- 34:00Speaker 8: launch off into the playoff race, whereas I think Seattle
- 34:03Speaker 8: at least they have a real strong backbone with how
- 34:06Speaker 8: they defend and their goaltending for the most part. And
- 34:09Speaker 8: whether that's going to be enough for Seattle to get
- 34:11Speaker 8: into the playoffs, we'll see, But I do think they
- 34:14Speaker 8: have a stronger foundation in terms of the playoff race
- 34:17Speaker 8: moving forward than Vancouver does.
- 34:18Speaker 1: Opinions may vary. What's yours right now on the shootout.
- 34:23Speaker 8: I mean, I guess I'm a bit tired of the
- 34:25Speaker 8: shootout in general. At the same time, I know fans
- 34:29Speaker 8: in the buildings seem to like it, they get into
- 34:31Speaker 8: it or whatever. I'm always I'm a bit of a
- 34:33Speaker 8: purist when it comes to sports, Like I don't mind ties.
- 34:35Speaker 8: I think ties are perfectly fine. I don't mind going
- 34:38Speaker 8: to overtime and it ending and going to a tie.
- 34:41Speaker 9: But I know fans like it and you.
- 34:43Speaker 8: Know, having some certainty at the end of the game.
- 34:45Speaker 8: It doesn't and you know it's not the worst thing,
- 34:46Speaker 8: but it's just it's so different over time and shootout
- 34:49Speaker 8: in the regular season versus the playoffs.
- 34:50Speaker 9: It's like two different sports.
- 34:52Speaker 8: So I cannot feel like as soon as we get
- 34:54Speaker 8: through regulation, we don't learn anything about a hockey team
- 34:56Speaker 8: because it's nothing transferable once to get into the playoffs
- 34:58Speaker 8: or no shootouts, there's no three on three, so it's.
- 35:01Speaker 9: Just a bit of a circus. But it's for entertainment,
- 35:04Speaker 9: so I'm a problem with it.
- 35:05Speaker 8: But generally I'm kind of fine with ties and not
- 35:08Speaker 8: having to go through all the extras.
- 35:10Speaker 4: So here, let's talk about rivalry for a second. I'm
- 35:13Speaker 4: not sure what Vancouver's perspective is on this, but I
- 35:16Speaker 4: think Seattle and Vancouver are starting to get a fairly
- 35:18Speaker 4: good rivalry. Is John Shorthouse coined iye, rivalry, you know,
- 35:24Speaker 4: and mccannon and Connor Garland kind of got that going
- 35:27Speaker 4: last night as well in that game. What's the sense
- 35:30Speaker 4: from your side is this? Is this something that's been
- 35:33Speaker 4: kind of simmering for the past five seasons since the
- 35:36Speaker 4: crack and camer League.
- 35:37Speaker 2: Is it growing? What are your thoughts?
- 35:39Speaker 8: I'd say it would be kind of simmering a little bit,
- 35:42Speaker 8: and it's one of those things where we are seeing
- 35:44Speaker 8: some more you know, the games are a bit more
- 35:48Speaker 8: heated between the two rifles. I think every game we
- 35:50Speaker 8: see now there is an extra edge to it. And
- 35:52Speaker 8: I know maybe Myer's got to go in with those
- 35:54Speaker 8: if it has hits on Viniers a couple of years back,
- 35:56Speaker 8: and I know he's been persona non grada in Seattle,
- 35:58Speaker 8: and I think those are great things because you know,
- 36:00Speaker 8: the animosity from the fan base and the players that
- 36:03Speaker 8: I think that adds an extra passion.
- 36:05Speaker 9: So it's certainly growing.
- 36:06Speaker 8: But I think ultimately for it to really blossom into
- 36:09Speaker 8: this this incredible rival we were all waiting for, it
- 36:12Speaker 8: has to be a playoff matchup between the teams, and
- 36:14Speaker 8: that's that's what truly elevates it, and that's when the
- 36:16Speaker 8: stakes are at their highest. But there is the natural
- 36:19Speaker 8: built in rivalry being you know, down the I five,
- 36:21Speaker 8: and the fact that a lot of Vancouver rights are
- 36:24Speaker 8: super happy that Seattle does have a hockey team because
- 36:27Speaker 8: you know, I've already seen some Canucks fans because of
- 36:29Speaker 8: how things have gone, they're they're already switching allegiances and
- 36:32Speaker 8: becoming cracking fans, but I think naturally fans want.
- 36:35Speaker 9: To get on board with it. For players, you're starting to.
- 36:38Speaker 8: See a bit more of a game in a game out.
- 36:39Speaker 8: But ultimately, what we need is both these teams would
- 36:42Speaker 8: be good at the same time and make the playoffs.
- 36:44Speaker 8: And ideally it'd be great if both these teams are
- 36:47Speaker 8: top three in the division, let's say second and third
- 36:49Speaker 8: one year, and they go headhead in the first round.
- 36:51Speaker 8: I think those are the types of matchups when teams
- 36:53Speaker 8: are even and they get into that seven game series,
- 36:56Speaker 8: it just elevates everything. It's kind of what happened with
- 36:58Speaker 8: Vancouver and the Minnesota wht out for instance, some years back,
- 37:01Speaker 8: and when they played their playoff series, and that's when
- 37:04Speaker 8: Vancouver became Minnesota's biggest rival. And for a long time,
- 37:07Speaker 8: those two teams really hated each other. And I think
- 37:10Speaker 8: we're always going to have the rivalry because of the
- 37:12Speaker 8: proximity between Vancouver and Seattle. But what we truly need
- 37:15Speaker 8: is as a seven game series of these teams going
- 37:17Speaker 8: toe to toe.
- 37:20Speaker 9: Who is Vancouver's biggest rivalry right now?
- 37:24Speaker 8: Well, I mean, considering how bad they've been, It's just
- 37:25Speaker 8: one of those things where you know other teams don't
- 37:27Speaker 8: view them as the rivals.
- 37:29Speaker 9: But I'd say right now, probably Edmonton.
- 37:32Speaker 8: Because they played them last in the playoffs too, and
- 37:34Speaker 8: they had Vancouver's number.
- 37:36Speaker 9: But with the Canucks, you know, having this, you know.
- 37:39Speaker 8: The false starts and not having the sustained success in
- 37:41Speaker 8: the playoffs year in a year out, that's where there
- 37:44Speaker 8: was r like for a long time those Calgary because
- 37:46Speaker 8: Vancouver and Calgary would end up meeting each other in
- 37:47Speaker 8: the playoffs every few years. So for the longest time
- 37:50Speaker 8: was like, those are the two teams that you know,
- 37:52Speaker 8: really hated one another. There's always hatred towards Toronto no
- 37:55Speaker 8: matter what. So I think you have that, But I'd say,
- 37:57Speaker 8: if you have to pick one, I'd say it's Edmonton
- 38:00Speaker 8: right now.
- 38:01Speaker 9: It's funny you mentioned Tyler Myers in that hit.
- 38:03Speaker 7: I think between him, Cale mccarr and Martin Pasposol, the
- 38:08Speaker 7: fan base is starting to slowly pick out a few
- 38:11Speaker 7: public enemies around the league. You know, you mentioned earlier
- 38:15Speaker 7: about the Vancouver Canuck fan base and them wanting to
- 38:19Speaker 7: maybe tank for McKenna or whatever the case may be.
- 38:22Speaker 7: When you look at Rutherford and Alvin, I mean, it's
- 38:24Speaker 7: not an easy job being a GM of a Canadian team.
- 38:28Speaker 7: How do they manage those expectations from you know, the
- 38:35Speaker 7: fan base wanting success and wanting a cup obviously, to
- 38:39Speaker 7: trying to avoid a full tear down and rebuilding on
- 38:43Speaker 7: the fly. What have you seen from that player development,
- 38:47Speaker 7: roster development standpoint that leads you to believe that maybe
- 38:51Speaker 7: this is the right path or should they just go
- 38:54Speaker 7: full San Jose, tear it down to the studs and
- 38:57Speaker 7: then be good for twenty years after that?
- 39:00Speaker 3: Well?
- 39:00Speaker 8: I think a big part of it is the mandate
- 39:03Speaker 8: at the end of the day comes from the very
- 39:04Speaker 8: top of the organization, and do you have an ownership
- 39:08Speaker 8: group that's willing to go through that type of pain?
- 39:10Speaker 8: Because ultimately, when it comes to tear down rebuild, managers, coaches,
- 39:14Speaker 8: players can have opinions, but ultimately the person writing the
- 39:16Speaker 8: checks is the one that's going to have to decide.
- 39:19Speaker 9: Am I willing to.
- 39:20Speaker 8: Go through the suffering for X amount of years and
- 39:22Speaker 8: looking at something that might take the better part of
- 39:24Speaker 8: five years And ultimately that's the person that has to
- 39:27Speaker 8: be on board for that type of rebuild to happen.
- 39:29Speaker 9: I also think Rutherford and.
- 39:31Speaker 8: Honestly, you know to be to be Frank, I don't
- 39:34Speaker 8: think any general manager in the NHL for the most part,
- 39:37Speaker 8: or president truly wants to tear their team down to
- 39:40Speaker 8: the studs like you mentioned San Jose, and yeah, I
- 39:42Speaker 8: mean they ended up, you know, getting down to the studs.
- 39:45Speaker 8: A lot of it was bad contracts too, it was
- 39:47Speaker 8: you know, they kind of got stuck in the mud,
- 39:48Speaker 8: and especially when they traded away all those picks to
- 39:50Speaker 8: get Eric Carlson, and they had no choice about to
- 39:53Speaker 8: embrace where what they were facing. And now they're finally
- 39:56Speaker 8: growing out of it and you're seeing you know, the upswing,
- 39:58Speaker 8: but they haven't made the playoffs of twenty nineteen. And
- 40:00Speaker 8: we heard the owner not too long ago have an
- 40:03Speaker 8: interview and talk about how disappointed he was about what
- 40:05Speaker 8: happened some years back. And there's still some trepidation about
- 40:09Speaker 8: needed to get better quicker. We can't have this goal
- 40:12Speaker 8: long gone too long. And I think Rutherford also given
- 40:15Speaker 8: his age, that he wants to whenever he leaves Vancouver,
- 40:18Speaker 8: because at his age, it's not like he's going to
- 40:20Speaker 8: be here for another decade. So I think he wants
- 40:22Speaker 8: to be in a spot where he can hand this
- 40:24Speaker 8: off in a positive environment or in a positive direction.
- 40:27Speaker 9: In a couple of years. And if you want to
- 40:29Speaker 9: look at.
- 40:29Speaker 8: It from what's the best way for them to have success,
- 40:32Speaker 8: they've done a good job building atmosphere and they wont
- 40:34Speaker 8: to call the couple last year. Their development program has
- 40:37Speaker 8: improved by leaps and bounds since Rutherford and now being
- 40:39Speaker 8: took over. They've done a good job of finding talent
- 40:42Speaker 8: through the cracks. They haven't had a lot of high picks,
- 40:44Speaker 8: but even the picks they've had, they've done a good
- 40:46Speaker 8: job of getting them to the NHL. We're seeing Tom Bilander,
- 40:50Speaker 8: el Elias Petterson the defenseman come in. He was a
- 40:53Speaker 8: third round draft pick. Even Jonathan Lecramack, he has shown
- 40:56Speaker 8: some promise college free agency, they've signed like a Maxson,
- 41:00Speaker 8: he's becoming an everyday player. And they've been able to
- 41:02Speaker 8: even develop players like a Lina's Carlson who was here
- 41:05Speaker 8: prior but they finally work with them in Abbotsford and
- 41:08Speaker 8: now he's becoming at the very least a player that
- 41:10Speaker 8: can play down your lineup. So if you look at
- 41:12Speaker 8: it from what they've done in terms of finding talent
- 41:16Speaker 8: and drafting players and developing them, you should have some
- 41:20Speaker 8: confidence that this group is able to do those things.
- 41:23Speaker 8: The question is can you do within the time frame
- 41:25Speaker 8: you're hoping to get it done, because they're hoping that
- 41:28Speaker 8: we might be bad this year and perhaps maybe next
- 41:30Speaker 8: year is not where we want it to be. But
- 41:32Speaker 8: we want to be able to turn up into two
- 41:34Speaker 8: to three years and be a competitive team again. That
- 41:37Speaker 8: might be a tight timeline to turn things around. But
- 41:40Speaker 8: if they do nail the draft and keep developing their players,
- 41:43Speaker 8: there might be an outside chance of that happening. But ultimately,
- 41:46Speaker 8: you know, teams in the NHL, they don't fully tear
- 41:48Speaker 8: down for the most part. Like even look people love
- 41:51Speaker 8: the Montreal example, Well Montreal still trade it for first
- 41:53Speaker 8: round picks. You know, the trader for Alex Neuhook, the
- 41:55Speaker 8: trader for Kirby Doc They go up two first round
- 41:58Speaker 8: picks to get no adopts And now is incredible. Hudson too,
- 42:02Speaker 8: I mean drafted him, But that's kind of the way
- 42:04Speaker 8: it goes, right, Like, you know, teams don't want to
- 42:06Speaker 8: be in the basement for seven eight years. They still
- 42:09Speaker 8: want to be able to turn it around relatively quickly.
- 42:12Speaker 8: So I don't think what Vancouver is doing is, you know,
- 42:14Speaker 8: divergent from most teams face what they're faced with. But
- 42:18Speaker 8: in a passionate hockey market like Vancouver, I think people
- 42:21Speaker 8: want to see the team be a trendsetter in some
- 42:23Speaker 8: ways and embrace something that teams normally don't. But organizationally,
- 42:27Speaker 8: you know, I think the best path forward is drafting,
- 42:30Speaker 8: and at the very least this management groups shown a
- 42:32Speaker 8: good track record of drafting and developing players.
- 42:35Speaker 1: Satires Jah joining us right now here on the Beacon
- 42:37Speaker 1: Plumbing hotline on Cracking Weekly, and as a part of
- 42:41Speaker 1: what they're trying to build from the foundation, they get
- 42:44Speaker 1: three pretty good players here out of one of the
- 42:46Speaker 1: biggest blockbuster deals I think in years in the NHL,
- 42:49Speaker 1: in Liam Ogrin, Marco Rossi and Ze Buoyam, and of
- 42:52Speaker 1: course Quinn use out the door as a result. But
- 42:55Speaker 1: sat tro or, where do you put the Quinn use
- 42:57Speaker 1: trade versus others you've seen over the years, And is
- 43:01Speaker 1: it fair to call zeev Booyam Quinn used light.
- 43:06Speaker 2: I don't want to.
- 43:06Speaker 8: Put that on Ze because I think Quinn is just
- 43:08Speaker 8: Zeve has been really good. Honestly the seven games he's played,
- 43:11Speaker 8: he's rushing the puck well, I think his defensive game
- 43:14Speaker 8: has been a bit more mature than I expected it
- 43:16Speaker 8: would be, considering he's a twenty year old rookie in
- 43:18Speaker 8: the in the NHL. But Quinn's a one of one.
- 43:21Speaker 8: I mean, nobody in the league skates the way Quinn
- 43:23Speaker 8: Hughes does. Nobody in the league plays the way Quinn does.
- 43:26Speaker 8: And that's not to say he's the best player, the best.
- 43:28Speaker 9: Defenseman in the league, but he's unique.
- 43:29Speaker 8: It's him and mccarr and even if Bulliam hits his potential,
- 43:33Speaker 8: he may not be, you know, one or two levels
- 43:36Speaker 8: compared to where Quinn is. So I don't want to
- 43:38Speaker 8: put that on Zeve. And I think there's a uniqueness
- 43:41Speaker 8: to how Quinn skates. Ze might actually be a little
- 43:45Speaker 8: quicker in a straight line. He might be more explosive
- 43:47Speaker 8: in a few years. But where Quinn dusts everybody in
- 43:50Speaker 8: the league as his edgework, I mean, he's he's almost
- 43:52Speaker 8: like a ballet dancer on the ice. It's just incredible
- 43:54Speaker 8: what he's able to do. I mean, his mom was
- 43:56Speaker 8: a figure skater two so I think you know, he
- 43:58Speaker 8: learned these these this trade at a really young age.
- 44:02Speaker 9: And he's so elusive.
- 44:03Speaker 8: I think there's nobody that can compare it to Quinn
- 44:05Speaker 8: in terms of how he skates. Like mccarr is more
- 44:07Speaker 8: direct and powerful and dynamic and has a bit more
- 44:10Speaker 8: power in how he plays, but Quinn's just the elegance
- 44:12Speaker 8: he plays with. So I can never put that on anybody.
- 44:14Speaker 8: I think it's unfair to Zave, but he has potential
- 44:17Speaker 8: to be a top pair, you know, perhaps franchise chasing,
- 44:20Speaker 8: changing defenseman, and I think where Vancouver kind of finds
- 44:24Speaker 8: itself now after having made the trade. I think it
- 44:28Speaker 8: is a fair value because you're never getting, you know,
- 44:30Speaker 8: one for one replacement when you trade a player like Quinn.
- 44:33Speaker 8: But I do think it's the biggest trade we've seen
- 44:36Speaker 8: since the cap Era started in two thousand and five.
- 44:40Speaker 8: There's been some big trades like Joe Thornton got moved,
- 44:42Speaker 8: of course, but the return I don't think looks anywhere
- 44:45Speaker 8: close to what bank who ended up getting it was
- 44:48Speaker 8: Brad Stewart, Marco Stern. I think Wayne Primo came over
- 44:51Speaker 8: from San Jose to a Boston in that trade. The
- 44:53Speaker 8: rants in a trade last year I think was maybe
- 44:55Speaker 8: the second biggest or the biggest when he got moved
- 44:58Speaker 8: from Martin Natchez in the move again to Carolina. But
- 45:01Speaker 8: I'd say in the cap Era, this was the biggest
- 45:04Speaker 8: trade that we have seen and perhaps the best player
- 45:06Speaker 8: to get traded since you know, you have to go
- 45:09Speaker 8: back to prior to the cap Era. I mean Vancouver
- 45:11Speaker 8: traded Papal Burret to Florida. I think that kind of
- 45:15Speaker 8: ranks similar in that type of range, like one of
- 45:17Speaker 8: the single best players in the league at his position
- 45:19Speaker 8: getting moved just kind.
- 45:20Speaker 1: Of reminded me also of Tamuslani from Winnipeg to Anaheim.
- 45:24Speaker 8: Yeah, that one is not a huge one as well. Yeah,
- 45:26Speaker 8: and those are the types of you know, erth chattering moves.
- 45:28Speaker 8: I mean, you're talking about guys were Hall of Fame
- 45:30Speaker 8: level talents and you know, and they don't usually get
- 45:33Speaker 8: traded in their prime like Quinn's like firmly right in
- 45:36Speaker 8: his prime and that's when you got moved.
- 45:38Speaker 9: You don't see that very often.
- 45:39Speaker 7: I've heard a lot of people talk about this trade
- 45:43Speaker 7: and I want to ask you, would you consider Quinn Hughes.
- 45:46Speaker 7: Is he the best Canuck in history?
- 45:48Speaker 3: And I've seen that flying around.
- 45:50Speaker 7: You know, the Canucks out of here trading are best
- 45:52Speaker 7: player that we've ever had.
- 45:53Speaker 3: And I'm like, all the sadems are pretty good. Yeah,
- 45:56Speaker 3: Rumbo was pretty good.
- 45:57Speaker 7: You guys, there's some guys hanging up in the rafters
- 46:00Speaker 7: rogers that are pretty good. Not saying Quinn is not,
- 46:03Speaker 7: but in the history of the Knucks is Quinn he
- 46:06Speaker 7: is number one.
- 46:08Speaker 8: I think you could argue he is in terms of
- 46:09Speaker 8: pure talent, right. And I think part of the reason
- 46:11Speaker 8: why there was an extra affinity towards Quinn is the Canucks.
- 46:15Speaker 8: Canucks fans have been dying to see the team have
- 46:18Speaker 8: a number one defenseman up until they drafted Quinn. The
- 46:21Speaker 8: conversation in Vancouver always was they've had great teams. They've
- 46:24Speaker 8: had great you know forwards, you know, maybe the best
- 46:27Speaker 8: wing and one of the best in Burret.
- 46:28Speaker 9: They had the cities.
- 46:30Speaker 8: You know, even looking a guy like Marcus Naslin, I
- 46:32Speaker 8: think he gets lost to you know, a guy who
- 46:34Speaker 8: won the Art Ross one year and the Lester B.
- 46:36Speaker 8: Pearson one year, one of the most prolific scores in
- 46:38Speaker 8: the NHL, right before the cap Earro started. But they
- 46:43Speaker 8: never had a defenseman that defined a franchise the way
- 46:45Speaker 8: Quinn did. And you know, fans had always talked about
- 46:49Speaker 8: and even in the media throughout the years that do
- 46:51Speaker 8: you truly win a Stanley coup unless you get a
- 46:53Speaker 8: Bona fid number one defenseman? Do you need to have
- 46:55Speaker 8: that type of lynch fin And the Knucks finally got one.
- 46:57Speaker 8: So I do think part of it is what fans
- 47:01Speaker 8: and a lot of people have.
- 47:01Speaker 9: Been longing for for forty.
- 47:03Speaker 8: Plus years for the team to find a player like Quinn,
- 47:06Speaker 8: so they finally got him. So I do think there's
- 47:08Speaker 8: also the recency bias because he's the latest one here.
- 47:11Speaker 9: It's an argument.
- 47:12Speaker 8: I mean, you can argue him Burry the Sadines, but
- 47:16Speaker 8: you can certainly craft an argument that Quinn is the
- 47:18Speaker 8: single most talented player this franchise ever had.
- 47:21Speaker 7: Let's not forget former Bowling Green Falcon Kevin Bixit.
- 47:24Speaker 1: Yeahvure quota for one shell fit you venture quota for
- 47:28Speaker 1: one Bowling Green name drop?
- 47:30Speaker 2: Yeah, I would.
- 47:32Speaker 4: I would add, you know, I grew up in the
- 47:34Speaker 4: Vancouver area, so it was a follower of the Canucks
- 47:36Speaker 4: for a long time, and I you know, I would
- 47:38Speaker 4: add that Quinnhughest is probably the best defenseman of the franchisees,
- 47:42Speaker 4: you know history. I think that you got to throw
- 47:45Speaker 4: in guys like you know, Trevor and Steven's going back
- 47:49Speaker 4: to Stan Smeil and you know some of the some
- 47:51Speaker 4: of the workhorses they had back in the eighties, but certainly,
- 47:56Speaker 4: you know, probably over the last decade and a half,
- 47:58Speaker 4: the Sadines, Burr and obviously Quinn User in that conversation, Yeah.
- 48:03Speaker 8: No doubt, And I think you know, you know, the
- 48:05Speaker 8: Conducks don't have a rich history of winning championships, but
- 48:07Speaker 8: they certainly have players that you know, we're amongst the
- 48:11Speaker 8: best of their position for the Vancouver like even Trevor,
- 48:14Speaker 8: Linda and the represented Canada at the Olympics. You know,
- 48:17Speaker 8: you looked at Stancemeal, maybe not the most talented player,
- 48:20Speaker 8: but one of the most hard, hardest working character players
- 48:23Speaker 8: in the NHL, known as one of the best leaders
- 48:25Speaker 8: in the NHL. So there is a rich history of
- 48:27Speaker 8: some real strong characters. And you know, in terms of
- 48:29Speaker 8: how Quinn's going to be remembered, that's going to be interesting,
- 48:32Speaker 8: right because there was no real success team success outside
- 48:36Speaker 8: of the you know, the Bubble Playoffs in his rookie
- 48:38Speaker 8: season and then two years ago when they got to
- 48:40Speaker 8: the second round.
- 48:41Speaker 9: Whereas Stan Smeil. He got to a Cup final.
- 48:43Speaker 8: Luongo got to a Cup final, Linden got to a
- 48:46Speaker 8: Cup final, The Cities got to a Cup final. Berry
- 48:48Speaker 8: got to a Cup final. So there's a difference between
- 48:51Speaker 8: who the best and most respect and loved Canucks were
- 48:55Speaker 8: and also who the most talented players were, and where
- 48:58Speaker 8: Quinn doesn't rank compared to those guys.
- 49:00Speaker 9: The teams successful was never here.
- 49:01Speaker 8: Now, I don't put that on Quinn only there's a
- 49:04Speaker 8: lot of failures to go around, but that's the one
- 49:06Speaker 8: thing missing from his resume.
- 49:09Speaker 1: Before we wrap this up, we're gonna get to Nashville
- 49:11Speaker 1: and Calgary. Who was on the crack and schedule. The
- 49:13Speaker 1: Canucks have already seen them here, so I think there's
- 49:15Speaker 1: a bit of a bas of information here to work
- 49:18Speaker 1: off for the season satire. But it just seems like
- 49:21Speaker 1: as if nobody is realistically out of the race yet
- 49:25Speaker 1: in the Western Conference, and all of a sudden, here
- 49:28Speaker 1: come the Calgary Flames. They won seven of ten. Here
- 49:31Speaker 1: comes Nashville, they've won seven of ten. To you, who's
- 49:36Speaker 1: the more surprising team still hanging around right now?
- 49:39Speaker 8: You know, I'd say Nashville given all the drama around
- 49:41Speaker 8: the team right, Like, I mean, we've heard so much
- 49:44Speaker 8: about is Brunette's job in jeopardy, and you know, is
- 49:49Speaker 8: stamcos no longer able to play in the NHL, Who's
- 49:52Speaker 8: getting traded? And they were still just spony last year?
- 49:54Speaker 8: Is spending all that money in free agency? And it
- 49:56Speaker 8: just seemed like there's so much turmoil that I wasn't
- 49:58Speaker 8: sure if they were going to be able to get
- 50:00Speaker 8: through it. And to give them credit, they've they've found
- 50:03Speaker 8: something here recently, and Stamkosa has really re emerged. I mean,
- 50:06Speaker 8: him and Ryan o'reiley last a little while have been
- 50:07Speaker 8: red hot playing next to one another, and they're kind
- 50:10Speaker 8: of finding that, you know, found to no use perhaps
- 50:13Speaker 8: to some extent, and they've really driven the team. And
- 50:15Speaker 8: when you get a guy like Roman Yosi back and
- 50:17Speaker 8: he's not as young as he used to be, but
- 50:19Speaker 8: he's still one of the top seven eight defensemen in
- 50:21Speaker 8: the National Hockey League. And if you get start, if
- 50:23Speaker 8: you start getting saved from guys like Sorrows, like there
- 50:26Speaker 8: is a better foundation there in Nashville, then I think
- 50:29Speaker 8: the results have indicated.
- 50:31Speaker 9: Now I'm not sure they'll make the playoffs. I'm not
- 50:33Speaker 9: sure if you.
- 50:34Speaker 8: Know they have longevity here, but there is talent on
- 50:37Speaker 8: that squad and now we're in the biggest disappointment in the
- 50:39Speaker 8: last couple of years where the veteran players not being
- 50:42Speaker 8: able to live up to their contracts, and now you're
- 50:44Speaker 8: seeing some of their veterans really get going and they
- 50:47Speaker 8: do play an aggressive style. They do have some decent
- 50:49Speaker 8: speed on the team. There's some tenacity with how they
- 50:51Speaker 8: play as well. So I think they're the surprise because
- 50:54Speaker 8: I just kind of felt like they were a team
- 50:55Speaker 8: dead in the water to start the year, and especially
- 50:58Speaker 8: with all the turmoil going on. I think the Flames
- 51:00Speaker 8: are a team you have to give a lot of
- 51:01Speaker 8: credit to. It's a really hard working bunch. Huska has
- 51:05Speaker 8: those guys working hard every single game. They have a
- 51:07Speaker 8: nice combination of youth and veterans. And again, I'm not
- 51:11Speaker 8: sure Calgary is going to make the playoffs, and perhaps
- 51:13Speaker 8: the best thing for them is another high draft pick
- 51:15Speaker 8: this year, as they're still are looking to kind of retool.
- 51:18Speaker 8: But when you have Rasmus Anderson, McKenzie Wieger and those
- 51:21Speaker 8: two guys, you know, hold down the ford on the
- 51:23Speaker 8: back end, it gives you a foundation. Dustin Wolfe, you know,
- 51:26Speaker 8: one of the most talented young goalies in the National
- 51:28Speaker 8: Hockey League. He's kind of regained his form. Their backup's
- 51:32Speaker 8: been pretty solid so far this year as well. So
- 51:34Speaker 8: they're a team that on any given night, if you
- 51:37Speaker 8: don't show up and play hard, they're going to beat you.
- 51:39Speaker 8: And we've seen that with Calgary going back to last
- 51:41Speaker 8: year they just missed the playoffs. I don't know if
- 51:43Speaker 8: they have enough juice, but if you show up against
- 51:46Speaker 8: Calgary and you're not ready, ready to work their team,
- 51:48Speaker 8: that's going to beat you. So I think that's the
- 51:49Speaker 8: biggest thing about Calgary is you can't take them lightly.
- 51:52Speaker 9: If you do, you're in trouble.
- 51:53Speaker 8: If you don't, I think you're a pretty good chance
- 51:55Speaker 8: of coming away with something against them. But they're a
- 51:57Speaker 8: really hard working team and they have veterans who don't
- 52:00Speaker 8: stop working. And I mentioned Wiger and Rastus anderson Nas
- 52:04Speaker 8: and Padre is an absolute horse up front two. I mean,
- 52:06Speaker 8: the guy works his butt off every single shift. He
- 52:08Speaker 8: has a true desire to have success every time he's
- 52:11Speaker 8: out there. And those are the types of teams there's
- 52:12Speaker 8: pestkey to play against, and especially it's true kind of
- 52:15Speaker 8: like the the doul drums of a season where teams
- 52:19Speaker 8: might kind of relax a little bit or kind of
- 52:20Speaker 8: feel like they don't have it. That's a team that's
- 52:22Speaker 8: going to be locked in and trying to work hard
- 52:24Speaker 8: every game. So the Calgary squad kind of look at
- 52:27Speaker 8: an all effort team that you just can't fall asleep against.
- 52:29Speaker 1: The filter is certainly still getting up and running right
- 52:32Speaker 1: now for this playoff picture, and a lot to be
- 52:34Speaker 1: decided before we get into the Olympic break. But hey, Satyre,
- 52:37Speaker 1: I appreciate this. You do find work once again. We'll
- 52:39Speaker 1: look forward to catch you once more down the road.
- 52:41Speaker 1: But in the meantime, Happy new year, Thanks for doing
- 52:43Speaker 1: this year with us.
- 52:44Speaker 9: Hey, same to you, guys.
- 52:45Speaker 8: I appreciate it very much and the best selected rest
- 52:47Speaker 8: of the season.
- 52:48Speaker 2: Unhappy all right, that's.
- 52:52Speaker 1: Sat to our shot in our conversation Mike Everett, AL,
- 52:56Speaker 1: we're doing this year again back at thirty two bar
- 52:58Speaker 1: and real just ahead a crack and practice us one
- 53:00Speaker 1: here before the end of the calendar year of twenty
- 53:03Speaker 1: twenty five. Crack in Nashville coming up tomorrow. But before
- 53:05Speaker 1: we get to the mailbag segment, about fifteen minutes before
- 53:09Speaker 1: we hit record on this. How about this announcement, Berkeley
- 53:12Speaker 1: Catton gonna switch from seventy seven to twenty seven.
- 53:16Speaker 3: Patrick coming out, Happy New Year, new number.
- 53:20Speaker 1: You might have been choking the like. I mean, I
- 53:22Speaker 1: watched this game against Vancouver time it was ice.
- 53:25Speaker 3: Yeah, there is Oh look at that numbers already changed.
- 53:28Speaker 3: Seven already changed.
- 53:29Speaker 2: On his helmet, on his jersey.
- 53:31Speaker 3: So you know, those of you who have a seventy
- 53:33Speaker 3: seven caton jersey, you.
- 53:35Speaker 2: Just gonna change one.
- 53:35Speaker 3: That's gonna be all hold on to that.
- 53:37Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 53:38Speaker 1: I said this again back up the press box, and
- 53:40Speaker 1: Curtis Crabtree pointed this out probably about two or three times.
- 53:44Speaker 1: We thought Caton was gonna pop that for a skull.
- 53:46Speaker 1: But it's coming, And I said it might just be
- 53:48Speaker 1: Nashville coming up on New Year's.
- 53:49Speaker 4: Yeah, you had a great opportunity in that last game.
- 53:51Speaker 4: He just flubbed on the pocket, little bit rolled on
- 53:53Speaker 4: his stick. But what a great shooting spot he was in.
- 53:56Speaker 7: For Berkeley Catton. For me, his confidence the last two weeks,
- 54:00Speaker 7: three weeks, every game he's doing something a little bit
- 54:05Speaker 7: more skillful, and I mean this is the nicest way
- 54:07Speaker 7: in the best way possible. He's doing something a little
- 54:10Speaker 7: bit more cocky here and I love it. He's he's
- 54:13Speaker 7: told dragging one more guy. He's he's carrying the puck
- 54:16Speaker 7: over the blue line. He's deaking in the high slot.
- 54:19Speaker 7: He's doing something a little bit more skilled every single game.
- 54:24Speaker 7: He probably should have five goals by now, and I
- 54:28Speaker 7: mean he is right there. But I have loved watching
- 54:32Speaker 7: his game. I love everything for him has been coming
- 54:36Speaker 7: together the last two and a half three weeks and
- 54:39Speaker 7: it's been awesome to see.
- 54:40Speaker 1: Let's get to our mail bag segment here. First off,
- 54:42Speaker 1: great question from Curtis Allen on Twitter and x's where
- 54:47Speaker 1: you can find me. By the way, I Benton underscore
- 54:48Speaker 1: Mike crack an Audio network at Cracking audio Net evergets
- 54:51Speaker 1: that the voice fits al Kiniski is at al Koniski obviously.
- 54:55Speaker 1: Curtis's question, is it concerning that jac O'Brien did not
- 55:00Speaker 1: main Team Canada's World Junior squad this year? Do you
- 55:03Speaker 1: think he will play in Coachelle Valley next year with
- 55:05Speaker 1: the new nineteen year old rule. I'll tee it up
- 55:08Speaker 1: here with this, I think number one, absolutely positively zero concern.
- 55:14Speaker 1: And this is where I think the selection part of
- 55:16Speaker 1: this has, you know, come under scrutiny where you're not
- 55:19Speaker 1: sometimes taking the most talented players, you're sometimes taking the
- 55:23Speaker 1: players that maybe fit a certain scheme or core values
- 55:27Speaker 1: of the management staff. It is not at all a
- 55:30Speaker 1: knock here on Jacobrien, and I think he was one
- 55:32Speaker 1: of the more highly discussed, maybe even controversial players left
- 55:36Speaker 1: off here from this roster. The returns as far as
- 55:39Speaker 1: what he's doing right now in the OHL say he
- 55:42Speaker 1: is without question beyond the shadow of a doubt next
- 55:46Speaker 1: year ready as a nineteen year old with that new
- 55:49Speaker 1: rule going into place in coachell O Valley. And I
- 55:52Speaker 1: think based on what we've seen maybe in trying to
- 55:55Speaker 1: finagle Shane right in there questions of you know, could
- 55:58Speaker 1: Berkeley Catton play there? Well, this is now right place,
- 56:00Speaker 1: right time for Jacobrian.
- 56:02Speaker 7: Jason Robertson being left off tv USA is concerning, right
- 56:08Speaker 7: Jacobrien being left off Team Canada for the World Juniors.
- 56:10Speaker 3: I'm with him. You know, he still is the second.
- 56:15Speaker 7: Leading scorer in the OHL right now. I mean he's
- 56:18Speaker 7: gonna be fine. And also too and Al being being
- 56:22Speaker 7: our resident Canadian. There's so much politics in Hockey Canada idea.
- 56:28Speaker 3: Who knows.
- 56:29Speaker 1: We need about a ten hour podcast here to dissect this.
- 56:32Speaker 7: Jacobrien is gonna be fine. If anything, I hope this
- 56:34Speaker 7: pisses him off a little bit. And he's like, you're
- 56:37Speaker 7: not gonna take me, all right, Well, then up the league.
- 56:40Speaker 2: Yep.
- 56:40Speaker 7: We'll see you next year in CV, and I'll make
- 56:42Speaker 7: my NHL debut next year as well, I am.
- 56:46Speaker 3: I am. My concern level with this is below zero
- 56:50Speaker 3: for for for him not making the team.
- 56:52Speaker 4: Yeah, and I also think too, And you know you said,
- 56:55Speaker 4: I hope it pisses him off. I I agree, I
- 56:57Speaker 4: hope it stokes those fires has been that makes him
- 57:01Speaker 4: want to not just show people, but just become a
- 57:04Speaker 4: better player than all those guys that were selected. And
- 57:07Speaker 4: they when they select a team for four nations for
- 57:10Speaker 4: the Olympics, it's not about necessarily picking the guy with
- 57:13Speaker 4: the most points you know in the NHL that qualifies
- 57:17Speaker 4: for being on the team, or the most points at
- 57:18Speaker 4: the junior level or USh whatever. It's about finding the
- 57:22Speaker 4: right combination of guys. And for whatever reason, the coaching
- 57:24Speaker 4: staff didn't think he was the part of that right combination.
- 57:27Speaker 4: They don't think he's a bad hockey player. They don't
- 57:29Speaker 4: think he's going to be a great They don't not
- 57:30Speaker 4: think he's going to be a great hockey player. It
- 57:32Speaker 4: just wasn't the right combination for that team.
- 57:34Speaker 1: Forty seven points, by the way, forty seven points in
- 57:38Speaker 1: twenty eight games, third in league scoring this year. My goodness,
- 57:42Speaker 1: he is on a tear well.
- 57:43Speaker 3: And you're right too, Mike. You need you need guys
- 57:47Speaker 3: to fill certain roles.
- 57:49Speaker 7: Right basketball, With the Olympics, you can bring every Lebron,
- 57:53Speaker 7: every Kobe, everybody, right, you can't have twenty five McDavid's
- 57:58Speaker 7: on your team.
- 58:00Speaker 3: It just won't work. You know, I don't care how
- 58:02Speaker 3: skilled you are. You know, it's team us.
- 58:04Speaker 7: Say, like I said, Jason Robertson, probably the best American
- 58:08Speaker 7: player right now, He's gonna more than likely be left
- 58:12Speaker 7: off the Olympic roster. Yeah, for reasons I don't understand.
- 58:17Speaker 7: But apparently he doesn't fit the role that Billy Garran
- 58:21Speaker 7: and the rest of the management staff want to phill.
- 58:24Speaker 7: And we're gonna have to move on from that. But
- 58:27Speaker 7: you never know why. But yeah about it. I'm talking
- 58:30Speaker 7: in circles here.
- 58:31Speaker 3: He's fine.
- 58:32Speaker 1: Question here from Phil saying we have seen Hins and
- 58:34Speaker 1: Lowe's here from goaltending Philip Grubauer a part of this
- 58:37Speaker 1: year over the last few years. Right now it looks
- 58:39Speaker 1: like a high with the salary cap going up in
- 58:42Speaker 1: contenders with weaknesses in goal, Is there a market to
- 58:45Speaker 1: trade out goaltunding right now? Would the team sell high?
- 58:49Speaker 1: That from Phil on Twitter and X Here's where I
- 58:52Speaker 1: get into the delicate part of this, and that when
- 58:55Speaker 1: you examine where the crack and are at right now
- 58:57Speaker 1: in the thick of this playoff race, and the kind
- 59:00Speaker 1: of return you would get for goaltending, would it measure
- 59:03Speaker 1: up and say other needs versus defense and forwards to
- 59:08Speaker 1: get this team at least stable here. Goaltending is a
- 59:11Speaker 1: big part of this because of the condensed nature of
- 59:14Speaker 1: the schedule and the fact that they plan to have
- 59:17Speaker 1: three goalies out there to sustain this kind of a
- 59:20Speaker 1: rigorous schedule here at this point. So, I mean, I
- 59:22Speaker 1: really don't know. It takes really the right kind of
- 59:25Speaker 1: trade partner and the right kind of fit, and I
- 59:27Speaker 1: think based on what Grubauer is making right now in salary,
- 59:30Speaker 1: I'm not sure if that would fit as well with
- 59:32Speaker 1: a lot of teams that's at least one example here
- 59:35Speaker 1: of this, So I think if you see movement elsewhere,
- 59:38Speaker 1: it's likelier thing from a defensive standpoint or a forward standpoint.
- 59:43Speaker 1: Goaltending is a very very tricky picture that I'm not
- 59:46Speaker 1: sure that makes a lot of sense as of right now.
- 59:49Speaker 4: Well, we've talked about this a little bit too over
- 59:50Speaker 4: the last few weeks as we get closer to the
- 59:53Speaker 4: trade deadline, and I think there's a small handful of
- 59:56Speaker 4: players where if I put my GM hat on for
- 59:59Speaker 4: a second, I would say thanks, but no thanks too
- 1:00:02Speaker 4: if somebody came college. It's a small handful of players
- 1:00:04Speaker 4: in this team. I think the goaltenders are not in
- 1:00:07Speaker 4: that handful. Maybe Joey, but the way Grubauer has been playing,
- 1:00:11Speaker 4: might be the two of them. But the right offer
- 1:00:13Speaker 4: gets presented to me, I have to look at it
- 1:00:15Speaker 4: and say, if I give up blank Joey Gruby, Matt Murray,
- 1:00:20Speaker 4: what am I getting in return? Having said that, we
- 1:00:23Speaker 4: were about to head into the part of the schedule
- 1:00:24Speaker 4: where we've got seventeen games in thirty one days. I
- 1:00:27Speaker 4: think you need three goaltenders during that run, at least
- 1:00:30Speaker 4: for that part of the schedule.
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: We get onto our top stories of twenty twenty five,
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: and I want to begin here with each of us
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: going here with three of these here. I think, first off,
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: for me as a hiring a head coach, Lane Lambert,
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: which I think set this team on a different course,
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: a different trajectory, and I think it's going to pay
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: off long term. You bring in a guy who has
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: been a part of a Stanley Cup winner. He brings
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: a hate to lose, mentality, there's intensity, and there's accountability
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: here to what he's brought here with this group. We've
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: seen this already. I think from just the moves he
- 1:01:02Speaker 1: makes in game, the moves he makes here with the
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: lineup beforehand, and I think ultimately what he's got to
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: consider maybe his crowning achievement through about roughly half this
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: season was pulling everyone together when you had Brandon montur Al,
- 1:01:16Speaker 1: Jared McCann, Jayden Schwartzman's done with that trip all the
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: way through from San Jose into Los Angeles, Anaheim in between,
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: after you trade out Mason Marchmen, I think with Lane Lambert,
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: this is a move that's going to create long term
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: effects here in the dressing room. Secondly, for me, the
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: shakeup of the crack in front office, Jason Votteroll moving
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: up to GM Ron Francis, President of Hockey Operations and
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: missing the playoffs here two years in a row and
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: getting here to the end of contracts I think is
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: a big key for off ice leadership, and he hasn't
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: been afraid to take big swings in the past. His
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: name was in the hunt here for other jobs reportedly
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: in the past, so this was a move to set
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: up the long term framework of how the next wave
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: is going to be. I think coming in he's gone
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: out of his way to explain how young players over
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: and over and over are going to be at the
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: core of this. And finally, for me, the third one
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: the drafting of Jacobrien. Long term, of course, there's question
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: marks and you have to assess those, I think on
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: a very very neutral scale. Short term though, I think
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: for me it was a right move because depending upon
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: how he pops, potentially you've got a collection here of Jacobrian,
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: Matty Venier's, Shane Wright even getting deeper into his contract,
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: Chandler Stevenson. There's also Berkeley Catton, where you're showing that
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: he can play on the wing right now and that's
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: so important O'Brien. Again, I go back to our mailbag segment,
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: miss the World Juniors, not because of his game, but
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: just because basically he got squeezed out of a job.
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: He's got hands, he's got skill, he's got vision. The preseason,
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: that thing told me a lot, and in two to
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: three years you could be looking at a top line
- 1:02:51Speaker 1: guy ready here to break through here for this team.
- 1:02:53Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean for you went management and coaching on
- 1:02:57Speaker 4: yours and the draft. I got to start with the
- 1:03:01Speaker 4: best start in franchise history. Through game number twenty two,
- 1:03:04Speaker 4: that's November twenty third, this cracking team had points in
- 1:03:07Speaker 4: seventeen of twenty two games. They were eleven to five
- 1:03:10Speaker 4: and six. And it wasn't a soft start to the schedule.
- 1:03:13Speaker 4: They had wins against Anaheim right off the bat, Vegas,
- 1:03:16Speaker 4: two wins against Winnipeg and Edmonton as well. We all
- 1:03:19Speaker 4: know what happened to Edmonton the first month, and yeah,
- 1:03:25Speaker 4: that's all you need to say start, but certainly two
- 1:03:28Speaker 4: wins against Winnipeg was was huge, and obviously Vegas and
- 1:03:31Speaker 4: Anaheim as well, so best start in franchise history. That
- 1:03:34Speaker 4: was a great story to come out of the blocks.
- 1:03:37Speaker 4: With second story for me was, I guess the yang
- 1:03:40Speaker 4: of that story the losing streak this team went on
- 1:03:42Speaker 4: from November twenty six to December eighteenth. They were one
- 1:03:45Speaker 4: to nine, they'd lost five to one to one and
- 1:03:47Speaker 4: lost four and you really started to question her. You know,
- 1:03:50Speaker 4: is this team that looked like it was absolutely gonna
- 1:03:53Speaker 4: be in the playoffs a week ago based on that start,
- 1:03:56Speaker 4: now starting to lose that opportunity. Obviously things have changed
- 1:04:00Speaker 4: just of late with the winning streak and the points
- 1:04:02Speaker 4: in five that they've gone on. So the best starting
- 1:04:04Speaker 4: franchise history number one, the losing streak number two. Number
- 1:04:08Speaker 4: three for me was the decision to keep Berkeley Catton.
- 1:04:12Speaker 4: Now you know, you can say, well, this isn't the
- 1:04:15Speaker 4: right place for him. He should have been back at junior.
- 1:04:17Speaker 4: He should have been a world juniors, but this team
- 1:04:20Speaker 4: decided to keep him. I think a big part of
- 1:04:22Speaker 4: it was based on off of injuries. I think that
- 1:04:26Speaker 4: they they decided to keep him here for that reason,
- 1:04:29Speaker 4: for the reason of he's going to develop faster at
- 1:04:32Speaker 4: this level. He's gonna he's going to transition his junior
- 1:04:35Speaker 4: game to the NHL game faster being here, Even if
- 1:04:37Speaker 4: he's not playing every game. You got to get him
- 1:04:40Speaker 4: playing to develop. You can't just have him practice in
- 1:04:43Speaker 4: But I think that decision to keep him here is
- 1:04:46Speaker 4: going to turn him into a top contributing forward faster
- 1:04:50Speaker 4: than it would have been having sent him back to junior.
- 1:04:52Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, you both have hit on all three
- 1:04:55Speaker 3: of mine.
- 1:04:55Speaker 7: I think anytime you make a coaching change, I mean
- 1:04:58Speaker 7: that's that's my time storyline of the calendar year. You know,
- 1:05:03Speaker 7: your third coach in three years, and and.
- 1:05:08Speaker 3: I mean we could have gone five honestly.
- 1:05:11Speaker 7: You know, you bring Lane and for the first time
- 1:05:13Speaker 7: you've got a more defensive, a structured coach, and it's
- 1:05:18Speaker 7: paid off dividends. So anytime you do that, and I'm
- 1:05:21Speaker 7: gonna lump in the managerial changes as well with that
- 1:05:26Speaker 7: the best start in franchise history. That's my second storyline
- 1:05:29Speaker 7: as well. I was I was looking at some numbers
- 1:05:31Speaker 7: the other day and just looking at where this team
- 1:05:34Speaker 7: was projected to finish and where this team, you know,
- 1:05:39Speaker 7: you listen to certain people on the national circuit who
- 1:05:43Speaker 7: never want to give this team credit. Beginning of the year. Oh,
- 1:05:47Speaker 7: cracket are gonna be thirty of thirty two. They're gonna be.
- 1:05:49Speaker 3: At the bottom.
- 1:05:50Speaker 7: I've got no hope, no prayer for this team. And
- 1:05:52Speaker 7: they come out, you say, twenty two points in their
- 1:05:55Speaker 7: first However many games.
- 1:05:57Speaker 2: Like seventeen seventeen points in the first twenty two, seventeen.
- 1:06:00Speaker 3: Points in the first twin to two games. I mean
- 1:06:02Speaker 3: that is.
- 1:06:03Speaker 7: If that's not silencing the detractors, I don't know what is.
- 1:06:07Speaker 7: And then my third storyline, I'm gonna go a bit
- 1:06:09Speaker 7: a little bit off the reservation here, but I think
- 1:06:11Speaker 7: it's gonna be. It has to be the play of
- 1:06:15Speaker 7: Matt Even here's for me this season, turning into that
- 1:06:19Speaker 7: two way centerment, turning into a defensively responsible centerment. You know,
- 1:06:25Speaker 7: I think he had that sophomore slump we all talked
- 1:06:28Speaker 7: about last year. You know, he bounced us back a
- 1:06:31Speaker 7: little bit. But now you're seeing the center of the future,
- 1:06:35Speaker 7: right your your future one a, your probable future captain.
- 1:06:39Speaker 7: At some point you sign him to that big extension,
- 1:06:43Speaker 7: and now he's he's finding areas of his game. And
- 1:06:46Speaker 7: I think if there's one player right now on this
- 1:06:50Speaker 7: roster who probably is the most vital, the most important
- 1:06:54Speaker 7: to the future success of this team, it's number ten. Yea,
- 1:06:58Speaker 7: and his game aim this year has been very very
- 1:07:05Speaker 7: nice to see. I need him to score more goals and.
- 1:07:07Speaker 3: Then I'll tell him that to his face. I love you, Maddy.
- 1:07:09Speaker 3: I need more than.
- 1:07:12Speaker 7: Game.
- 1:07:12Speaker 3: I need more than four.
- 1:07:14Speaker 7: But that for me watching him develop into that responsible
- 1:07:18Speaker 7: he loves Patrice Bergeron, but that's the comparison you get.
- 1:07:23Speaker 7: I'm starting to see it. And because of that two
- 1:07:26Speaker 7: way game of his, that's my third storyline that he's
- 1:07:29Speaker 7: been able to develop that.
- 1:07:30Speaker 4: Yeah, and I just want to correct one statement. The
- 1:07:32Speaker 4: Kraken had points in seventeen of twenty two games. They're
- 1:07:35Speaker 4: actually had twenty eight points on November twenty third. I
- 1:07:38Speaker 4: want to correct that because I know someone listens going
- 1:07:39Speaker 4: that's not right. So that's the correction there. The other
- 1:07:42Speaker 4: comment I want to make is, okay, my my four
- 1:07:45Speaker 4: fourth story is that three goalie story. Yeah, you know
- 1:07:48Speaker 4: it was talked about a lot in the preseason. I
- 1:07:50Speaker 4: think that it's it's turned out to be a genius move,
- 1:07:54Speaker 4: but not just having three goalies, but Colins Zulnel as well,
- 1:07:58Speaker 4: the role he has in and played with.
- 1:08:01Speaker 1: Be remiss without mentioning Colin zu Leonello. To end this
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: calendar you're on this podcast.
- 1:08:05Speaker 4: What he's done to keep these three goalies hungry, to
- 1:08:09Speaker 4: keep them ready, to keep them at the top of
- 1:08:11Speaker 4: their game. I give him all the credit of getting
- 1:08:14Speaker 4: Gruby to where he is right now, and also getting
- 1:08:17Speaker 4: Matt Murray in a place where you know he was
- 1:08:20Speaker 4: injured for a while. I think he's he's close to
- 1:08:22Speaker 4: being ready to go, if not ready, to get him
- 1:08:24Speaker 4: into a place where when he comes in he's playing well.
- 1:08:26Speaker 4: To have three goaltenders playing this well is incredible.
- 1:08:30Speaker 7: Go back and listen to some of our pregame chats
- 1:08:33Speaker 7: with Ley Lambert and he he cannot help, but heap
- 1:08:37Speaker 7: all the praise on top of Colin and his work
- 1:08:40Speaker 7: with these three guys.
- 1:08:41Speaker 1: Time for our three stars here to wrap up this
- 1:08:43Speaker 1: show and to wrap up twenty twenty five. I'll first
- 1:08:47Speaker 1: off begin with Elie Toulvenan as my third Star NHL
- 1:08:50Speaker 1: second Star of the Week from this last week six
- 1:08:53Speaker 1: game points streak he had carrying into Vancouver, which tied
- 1:08:56Speaker 1: a career high. But the abrasiveness he had and the
- 1:08:59Speaker 1: ability in the willingness again to shoot the puck with purpose,
- 1:09:02Speaker 1: I thought told me that he's searching for something deeper
- 1:09:07Speaker 1: with his game, and he is finding results with that
- 1:09:11Speaker 1: as far as an effect, and it's helping elevate Chandler
- 1:09:14Speaker 1: Stevenson and his line as well, because Stevenson's playing his
- 1:09:17Speaker 1: best hockey really at this point heading into twenty twenty six,
- 1:09:20Speaker 1: and the two kind of go hand in hand. But
- 1:09:22Speaker 1: Ellie Tolbenen well deserved for the NHL Second Star of
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: the Week. He's my third star. My second star is
- 1:09:28Speaker 1: Jordan Eberley, who scored clutch goals at Anaheim clutch a
- 1:09:32Speaker 1: clutch goal at Los Angeles, who get the Kraken on
- 1:09:35Speaker 1: the board. He was the first guy on the board
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: as well against Philadelphia. He's on track right now for
- 1:09:40Speaker 1: about a thirty goal season. He is turning back the
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: clock to early Edmonton years right now, and we're showing
- 1:09:47Speaker 1: that he's still got a We're seeing that he still
- 1:09:50Speaker 1: got much more in the tank when you can when
- 1:09:54Speaker 1: health is on his side, versus what was an unfortunate
- 1:09:57Speaker 1: season last year with the catastrophic collision he had against
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: Chicago and then just coming back for about what was
- 1:10:05Speaker 1: like a fraction of the season. But he is turning
- 1:10:08Speaker 1: up the heat right now at the right time. And
- 1:10:10Speaker 1: I think for any question marks you had maybe with him,
- 1:10:12Speaker 1: Maddy Banier, is that line being put together? They are
- 1:10:16Speaker 1: being answered in resounding fashion. Jordan Eberley is my second start,
- 1:10:20Speaker 1: my first star. I'm gonna go with youth here. Jacob
- 1:10:22Speaker 1: Allanson thirty four hits in eight NHL games this season.
- 1:10:27Speaker 1: He is an absolute battering ram. He's got an edge.
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: And again, as I said, saying this with maybe some
- 1:10:34Speaker 1: measure of calculation, you keep doing this over and over,
- 1:10:38Speaker 1: you're putting yourself on track to become a deep track
- 1:10:42Speaker 1: fan favorite line. He is a big part of this
- 1:10:45Speaker 1: right now. Jacob Allanson is my first start of the week.
- 1:10:47Speaker 4: Yeah, let me just add on to that Jacob mollanson comment,
- 1:10:49Speaker 4: because he's not one of my three stars, but I'll
- 1:10:52Speaker 4: make it my fourth. You talk about those hits going
- 1:10:54Speaker 4: into the gate last game. Ellie Tolvenen leads this team
- 1:10:58Speaker 4: in hits. Total hits averages about two point five per game.
- 1:11:02Speaker 4: Tykrcha is second in total hits. He averages about two
- 1:11:05Speaker 4: point three per game. Jacob Mollnson right now is averaging
- 1:11:08Speaker 4: almost four and a half pits per game. So he's
- 1:11:10Speaker 4: on paste to take this lead over if he was
- 1:11:13Speaker 4: to play every game the rest of the season. That's
- 1:11:15Speaker 4: exciting and I look forward to seeing more of Can.
- 1:11:17Speaker 1: You imagine him by the way against the Florida Panthers
- 1:11:19Speaker 1: because we haven't seen them yet.
- 1:11:20Speaker 3: Yeah, my goodness, I can't wait.
- 1:11:23Speaker 4: In terms of my three stars, I gotta go with
- 1:11:25Speaker 4: the captain first. Jordan Neberley. Four goals, one assess plus
- 1:11:29Speaker 4: two over those last four games over the last week.
- 1:11:32Speaker 4: I love seeing Jordan Neberley grab that first goal of
- 1:11:35Speaker 4: the game. I love seeing Jordan Neberley in a one
- 1:11:38Speaker 4: to one situation go get that go ahead goal in
- 1:11:41Speaker 4: the second or third period. I love seeing him be
- 1:11:44Speaker 4: the first guy on the ice after Jacob Mallonson and
- 1:11:46Speaker 4: Ben Myers are out in the ice here for practice,
- 1:11:48Speaker 4: like he is showing his leadership style at the highest
- 1:11:52Speaker 4: level right now. So I love that about Jordan Neberley.
- 1:11:54Speaker 4: And over the last week he was my third star,
- 1:11:56Speaker 4: second star. It was the second Star of the week
- 1:11:58Speaker 4: for the NHL l E twelve and two goals for
- 1:12:00Speaker 4: assists plus five in that in that timeframe. I didn't
- 1:12:04Speaker 4: write it down, but probably a dozen hits as well
- 1:12:07Speaker 4: over those four games. You know the difference between Ellie
- 1:12:10Speaker 4: Tolvenan and Jacob Lahnson is Jacob Mallanson is a crowd
- 1:12:14Speaker 4: pleasing hitter, like he is going to throw that open
- 1:12:18Speaker 4: ice hit, He's going to put somebody on their back
- 1:12:20Speaker 4: in the corner, Whereas Ellie Tolvenan, he's a quiet hitter,
- 1:12:23Speaker 4: which means he's just gonna finish every reach out quietly.
- 1:12:25Speaker 3: Did you see Mallanson take out Tyler Myers?
- 1:12:28Speaker 4: I did see that. We didn't talk about that. I
- 1:12:30Speaker 4: wanted to see a replay because him also. I wanted
- 1:12:34Speaker 4: to see replays. I thought, did Jacob Mollatson just put
- 1:12:36Speaker 4: Tyler Myers on his back?
- 1:12:38Speaker 7: I saw it in a highlight like later that night,
- 1:12:41Speaker 7: But again it happened behind the place, so the puck
- 1:12:45Speaker 7: was already in the other end of the ice and
- 1:12:48Speaker 7: out of the corner of my eye. I'm like, no
- 1:12:51Speaker 7: bleeping away, did Tyler Myers?
- 1:12:54Speaker 1: There are seeds here opposing players who have taken who
- 1:12:58Speaker 1: have taken liberties on craw and players here, and Jacob
- 1:13:01Speaker 1: Allanson it feels like right now is with within the
- 1:13:04Speaker 1: bounds of his own game and being responsible, is trying
- 1:13:08Speaker 1: to now keep receipts and payball.
- 1:13:10Speaker 3: So I told SATs here on the when our interview,
- 1:13:13Speaker 3: I was like.
- 1:13:14Speaker 7: The krack and now have got three public enemies between Myers,
- 1:13:18Speaker 7: Paspacil and Cale mccar.
- 1:13:21Speaker 3: Yeah, they're still booming, kar I love it.
- 1:13:24Speaker 2: No.
- 1:13:24Speaker 4: I I saw Myers go onto his back. I saw
- 1:13:28Speaker 4: Mallanson skating away. I didn't see the actual contact made,
- 1:13:31Speaker 4: and I meant to go back and look at that
- 1:13:33Speaker 4: to see if that's not.
- 1:13:34Speaker 3: The other day, and I was like, he absolutely right.
- 1:13:36Speaker 4: So that was one of his hits. And then my
- 1:13:39Speaker 4: number one star of the past week is Philip Grubauer.
- 1:13:41Speaker 4: He had two wins in that time, stopping thirty seven
- 1:13:44Speaker 4: shots on goal on average over those two goal games,
- 1:13:46Speaker 4: as well as a forty one shot on goal high
- 1:13:49Speaker 4: high for the franchise, nine seven save percentage on average. Again,
- 1:13:54Speaker 4: he's playing the top of his game right now. I
- 1:13:57Speaker 4: look forward to the next time he's in net.
- 1:13:58Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:13:59Speaker 7: I mean I ided five stars of the week. I'm
- 1:14:01Speaker 7: gonna go by my third star. The kids. I mean
- 1:14:05Speaker 7: that line just again impacting every game that they've played in.
- 1:14:10Speaker 7: I go back to Carts mixing it up at Anaheim,
- 1:14:12Speaker 7: Jacob Alansen all of his hits. Winderton gets back on
- 1:14:15Speaker 7: that line last game and helps to generate some offense
- 1:14:19Speaker 7: as well.
- 1:14:19Speaker 3: So give me that.
- 1:14:20Speaker 7: Jordan Eberley the captain number two for me, leading by
- 1:14:24Speaker 7: example with his four goals, getting the first goal of
- 1:14:26Speaker 7: the game. You said it, he's finding the fountain of
- 1:14:29Speaker 7: youth again, going back to early Edmonton days, and I
- 1:14:34Speaker 7: think if this team wants to have success this year,
- 1:14:37Speaker 7: they're going to need the captain. And we would also
- 1:14:41Speaker 7: be remiss without if we didn't mention. Listen, the Kraken
- 1:14:44Speaker 7: Vets have been in the headlines this week. Is in
- 1:14:47Speaker 7: terms of are they going to get moved? Everly's name
- 1:14:50Speaker 7: has come up and you know, you're.
- 1:14:53Speaker 1: Just go down and listen, see who's a UFA. They
- 1:14:56Speaker 1: are well very much in the center of the conversation.
- 1:14:58Speaker 7: And I think a guy like Jordan Everly to put
- 1:15:01Speaker 7: that out of his mind and the games that we've
- 1:15:04Speaker 7: seen from him this week, I mean all year really,
- 1:15:07Speaker 7: but for me, four goals in a week, that's amazing.
- 1:15:10Speaker 7: And then I mean, you're second star of the week,
- 1:15:12Speaker 7: you're my first star of the week.
- 1:15:13Speaker 3: Ellie's told it.
- 1:15:14Speaker 7: I mean Et has put together some some of his
- 1:15:18Speaker 7: best hockey that I think we've seen from him in
- 1:15:21Speaker 7: a cracking uniform. Never mind the stats, it's the hits,
- 1:15:25Speaker 7: it's the defending, it's the blocking shots. He's he's been
- 1:15:28Speaker 7: in the middle of some extra curriculars you know as well.
- 1:15:33Speaker 7: Really a complete game out of him the last week for.
- 1:15:37Speaker 4: Me, just some honorable mention too, only because I wrote
- 1:15:39Speaker 4: it down. I did the home run Freddy goodrou two
- 1:15:42Speaker 4: goals plus four over the last week, Maddy Benier's three
- 1:15:45Speaker 4: assists plus two over the last week, Coppo Coco same thing,
- 1:15:48Speaker 4: three assists plus one, and Chandler Stevenson a goal and
- 1:15:50Speaker 4: two assists plus three. So some additional guys that were
- 1:15:53Speaker 4: flirting with that third or second second, second star, but
- 1:15:57Speaker 4: absolutely contributing.
- 1:15:58Speaker 1: How are you into New Year's restiutions, Yeah, I'm gonna
- 1:16:02Speaker 1: hit the gym more.
- 1:16:03Speaker 7: I'm going to join al on the road in the
- 1:16:05Speaker 7: in the gyms because I use your round of water
- 1:16:08Speaker 7: to go find yeah, refill his bottle. Yeah yeah, No,
- 1:16:12Speaker 7: you know what my New Year's resolution, I'm gonna I'm
- 1:16:15Speaker 7: gonna get a little cheesy here. I am going to
- 1:16:19Speaker 7: I'm going to play more hockey with my son.
- 1:16:22Speaker 2: Yeah, guy, he beats a guy.
- 1:16:25Speaker 7: I don't like being beat by a three year old.
- 1:16:27Speaker 7: So my New Year's resolution is to get better than
- 1:16:30Speaker 7: my three year old son in hockey.
- 1:16:32Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:16:32Speaker 4: I mean, I'm not a big resolution guy just because
- 1:16:35Speaker 4: I hate how they happened January first, most of them
- 1:16:38Speaker 4: en by January fifteenth. But I'm certainly gonna take the
- 1:16:42Speaker 4: month of January and try and eat a little cleaner
- 1:16:45Speaker 4: whatever that entails, maybe a little bit less alcohol.
- 1:16:48Speaker 3: You're not doing dr January.
- 1:16:50Speaker 2: I didn't say dry. I didn't say dry. You shut
- 1:16:52Speaker 2: that up?
- 1:16:53Speaker 1: Did that last year? I did that last year.
- 1:16:54Speaker 4: By the way, I have too many events in January
- 1:16:57Speaker 4: that involved alcohol. I can't say no but one days,
- 1:17:00Speaker 4: maybe twenty of them, I get dry for eating a
- 1:17:03Speaker 4: little healthier, exercise a little bit more, and again, I
- 1:17:07Speaker 4: want to try and carry it as far as possible.
- 1:17:09Speaker 4: So if I say dry January, that's not going to
- 1:17:11Speaker 4: go twelve months. But if I say a little better,
- 1:17:13Speaker 4: eating a little less alcohol, I can keep it going
- 1:17:15Speaker 4: for the rest of it.
- 1:17:16Speaker 1: I'm trying to trim a little bit of the holiday
- 1:17:18Speaker 1: pounds off of here, so that that's the big thing
- 1:17:20Speaker 1: for me, and I think within the discipline of that,
- 1:17:22Speaker 1: it's not so much. I think the extra stuff, like
- 1:17:24Speaker 1: you know, the adult beverages, the sugar. It's more like
- 1:17:28Speaker 1: you know, cheese. For me, cheese is my weakness. I'm
- 1:17:31Speaker 1: trying to Yeah, cheese can be my weakness. So I
- 1:17:34Speaker 1: think a little bit less of that, you know, coming
- 1:17:36Speaker 1: up in this next month. But I mean, I want
- 1:17:37Speaker 1: to dive back into the book one of my favorites
- 1:17:39Speaker 1: of all time, Atomic Habits by James Clear. Folks, if
- 1:17:42Speaker 1: you have not read it yet, it is a life changer.
- 1:17:45Speaker 1: It is a game changer, yes for you. I do
- 1:17:48Speaker 1: read books, by the way. I'm not just a guy
- 1:17:50Speaker 1: who just recorded the buttons buttons and stuff.
- 1:17:53Speaker 2: I try.
- 1:17:53Speaker 1: I try to get in touch grass anyway. But you know,
- 1:17:57Speaker 1: James Clear, Atomic Habits, I think is a great one
- 1:18:00Speaker 1: of lifebook which I think really sets you up for
- 1:18:03Speaker 1: the kind of person that you want to be, and
- 1:18:06Speaker 1: it teaches more about structure, kind of like using the
- 1:18:09Speaker 1: Hockey term of this, and how it reinforces habits and
- 1:18:13Speaker 1: makes this easier for you to repeat over and over
- 1:18:16Speaker 1: and over. To the bottom line, the more habits you
- 1:18:18Speaker 1: build up, you get better point zero one percent every day.
- 1:18:22Speaker 1: But you do it day by day by day. Pure
- 1:18:25Speaker 1: math that adds up to doing what you want to
- 1:18:28Speaker 1: do better. And so I think for me to kind
- 1:18:30Speaker 1: of round all this, I want to get back into
- 1:18:31Speaker 1: the book Atomic Habits, which is I think an absolute
- 1:18:34Speaker 1: game changering.
- 1:18:36Speaker 4: Reading books in school. I really did my book. My
- 1:18:38Speaker 4: idea of book, I've seen you on the plane. I've
- 1:18:39Speaker 4: not seen you dive yet into a book. My idea
- 1:18:41Speaker 4: of reading the book when I was a kid was
- 1:18:43Speaker 4: reading Mad magazine.
- 1:18:45Speaker 3: I tell my life all the time. I know how
- 1:18:47Speaker 3: to read.
- 1:18:48Speaker 7: My life is now two years in a row of
- 1:18:51Speaker 7: reading over one hundred books.
- 1:18:53Speaker 2: Congratulations, and she's.
- 1:18:54Speaker 7: Reading Shelle is reading War and Peace like These aren't
- 1:18:58Speaker 7: like ninety age books. These are three four, five hundred
- 1:19:03Speaker 7: page books that she's reading and listening to.
- 1:19:06Speaker 3: And yes, audio books count as reading audiobooks count.
- 1:19:11Speaker 1: That's our next full question here, do audiobooks county?
- 1:19:16Speaker 2: We're kidding?
- 1:19:17Speaker 3: But no, Yeah, my wife she is she reads enough
- 1:19:20Speaker 3: for the both of us.
- 1:19:21Speaker 1: I'm in the same boat here. I can't hold a
- 1:19:23Speaker 1: candle to my wife, Amy who I've seen her pick
- 1:19:26Speaker 1: up a three hundred page book for Christmas or for
- 1:19:29Speaker 1: a birthday present, and she literally has plowed through half
- 1:19:32Speaker 1: the book in one day. It is unbelievable.
- 1:19:36Speaker 4: I think we just got our question of the week.
- 1:19:38Speaker 4: There we go audiobook reading, or is it not, because
- 1:19:41Speaker 4: we can.
