- 0:32Speaker 1: dot com. F I R S T L I T
- 0:35Speaker 1: E dot com. Well, I'm gonna talk about first. I'm
- 0:41Speaker 1: not even gonna introduce who's here, because I'm gonna talk
- 0:43Speaker 1: about something that's such a I don't know how to
- 0:48Speaker 1: put it. It's so sad and depressing as when I
- 0:50Speaker 1: talk about it for a minute, and then we're gonna
- 0:51Speaker 1: put it behind us and we're gonna introduce who's here?
- 0:55Speaker 1: Uh I somehow did you guys know? I didn't even
- 0:57Speaker 1: know about this till Maggie Hudlow wrote about it it
- 1:00Speaker 1: on our website. So Maggie Hudlow has a piece up
- 1:05Speaker 1: on our website. Twenty year old face is involuntary manslaughter
- 1:10Speaker 1: charge for duck hunting accident. This happened down to Wyoming
- 1:15Speaker 1: on January twenty of last year. But I hadn't heard
- 1:17Speaker 1: about it. These three friends go duck hunting. One of
- 1:23Speaker 1: them had never been hunting, was interested in getting started
- 1:25Speaker 1: in hunting. His friends invite him out to go hunting.
- 1:29Speaker 1: H One of the kids has a you know, has
- 1:40Speaker 1: an accident with his gun. It kills his buddy and
- 1:43Speaker 1: now has is facing some serious charges. Student at the
- 1:49Speaker 1: University of Wyoming. I lived up because a couple a
- 1:53Speaker 1: couple of things. You know, we're hunting with the flying
- 1:55Speaker 1: v guys, teohing, I'm looking at cow butties.
- 2:00Speaker 3: I've never got the invite to go hunt with those guys.
- 2:03Speaker 1: You weren't there hunting with them one time, chilling ones.
- 2:06Speaker 4: I was.
- 2:07Speaker 1: I hunted with them once. Anyways, they do this thing
- 2:11Speaker 1: they do. They do when they're getting ready, when they
- 2:14Speaker 1: set up and they're getting ready to hunt, they tell
- 2:16Speaker 1: a story that almost makes you not want to hunt
- 2:19Speaker 1: about duck blind safety. Like they're like, hey, I know
- 2:24Speaker 1: everybody's having a good time, but before shooting light begins
- 2:26Speaker 1: and before we pick up our shotguns, we're gonna have
- 2:28Speaker 1: a talk. And they do this every they sell me.
- 2:30Speaker 1: They do it every time they hunt. And they tell
- 2:33Speaker 1: a story about a death and a duck blind and
- 2:40Speaker 1: uh and they would say, and none of those people
- 2:42Speaker 1: ever hunted ever again with that right, Yeah, Oh it's sobering,
- 2:49Speaker 1: but I just wanted to acknowledge it. I just yeah,
- 2:52Speaker 1: it's just like, you know, for even the kid that
- 2:57Speaker 1: you know, I mean, this kid could fad. And I'm
- 3:02Speaker 1: not saying like I'm not criticizing prosecutors at all, but
- 3:09Speaker 1: in this accident, a maximum penalty of twenty years in prison.
- 3:16Speaker 1: Me like to go and put the emphasis on the
- 3:19Speaker 1: person's in trouble. I'm not trying to do that. I mean,
- 3:22Speaker 1: a kid died. It's just be careful.
- 3:25Speaker 3: Yeah, well, it has to be talked about because we
- 3:28Speaker 3: talk about all the fun things and the food and
- 3:32Speaker 3: in this case, the dogs. You know, it's like waterfowl
- 3:35Speaker 3: huntings are great. It's also, you know, in my experience,
- 3:40Speaker 3: like the place where accidents are going to happen. If
- 3:43Speaker 3: I'm going to be got in such a way in
- 3:46Speaker 3: the hunting world, it's not gonna be during archery season.
- 3:48Speaker 3: It's not gonna be during rightful season. It's going to
- 3:50Speaker 3: be during waterfoul season. And it is the ultimate responsibility
- 3:55Speaker 3: sport because a very simple mistake can result in the
- 4:02Speaker 3: loss of a human life.
- 4:04Speaker 1: Think about how familiar this sounds. This is according to
- 4:06Speaker 1: the investigating officer. They're having a problem with one of
- 4:11Speaker 1: their shotguns. They set the shotgun aside use the other shotgun.
- 4:19Speaker 1: A while later, he returns to trying to figure out
- 4:22Speaker 1: what the hell's wrong with the shotgun.
- 4:24Speaker 3: And then yeah, and it is. That's that's the distraction, right,
- 4:29Speaker 3: It's like it's no longer a gun. It becomes this
- 4:34Speaker 3: issue within the thing, and then it's you're it's a distraction. Yeah,
- 4:40Speaker 3: it's terrible with that.
- 4:43Speaker 1: Joined today by Chris Danny.
- 4:44Speaker 5: Chris, I'm.
- 4:47Speaker 1: I'm sorry. Make you coming after that? Uh, we're joined
- 4:51Speaker 1: by a bunch of people. I gonna get there, but
- 4:52Speaker 1: real quick. People are familiar with you.
- 4:56Speaker 4: Now are they?
- 4:59Speaker 1: They don't know it what they are. Where are you from?
- 5:02Speaker 4: I'm from Little Rock, Little Rock, Arkansas.
- 5:05Speaker 1: Okay, so you're uh when was it Krinn in twenty
- 5:10Speaker 1: twenty three? First off, Chris, I realized only recently you never.
- 5:16Speaker 6: Know.
- 5:16Speaker 1: You didn't know this. We tried really really hard, multiple
- 5:20Speaker 1: times to license one of your songs for our podcast.
- 5:25Speaker 4: M dude, Oh really it's I don't know why it
- 5:33Speaker 4: was so hard to get a hold of me. I'm
- 5:37Speaker 4: so really good on all that stuff. People thought I
- 5:40Speaker 4: was dead recently.
- 5:41Speaker 1: When you're If the Roses Don't Kill Us, am I
- 5:44Speaker 1: saying that right?
- 5:44Speaker 7: That's right, okay.
- 5:45Speaker 1: When your album If the Roses Don't Kill Us came out,
- 5:49Speaker 1: I've listened to that album like a million times.
- 5:52Speaker 4: Awesome, a million times thank.
- 5:54Speaker 1: You taste, loved it, loved it, loved it, liked everything
- 5:57Speaker 1: about it. And one of the songs I liked the
- 6:00Speaker 1: whole damn album. One of the songs I liked was uh,
- 6:06Speaker 1: I like the happy and sad, so I liked all
- 6:08Speaker 1: that shit. But ride On Okay became a favorite, and
- 6:14Speaker 1: it became and I keep I've told this story before
- 6:16Speaker 1: on the Show's At some point in time we had
- 6:19Speaker 1: talked about, like now that the issue will come up
- 6:22Speaker 1: and we'll talk about it, talk about and talk about
- 6:23Speaker 1: talking about it. Something's kind of coming in the news,
- 6:27Speaker 1: and so now and then it's will struggle to put
- 6:29Speaker 1: a thing to bed, uh huh. And I remember one time,
- 6:33Speaker 1: like we had talked about a thing so much that
- 6:37Speaker 1: someone said something like, uh, someone said, you know, we
- 6:43Speaker 1: beat the horse to death, okay, And I said to
- 6:48Speaker 1: a colleague, I'm like, hey, go try to get permission
- 6:51Speaker 1: to use the song ride on, because in it, the
- 6:54Speaker 1: point is we've done beat this damn horse to death
- 6:57Speaker 1: this time to ride on. And so they come back
- 7:02Speaker 1: and like, well, you know this, and that it requires
- 7:05Speaker 1: us and that to license the song or not, and
- 7:07Speaker 1: I'm like, well, okay, we're just gonna do it one time,
- 7:10Speaker 1: but then it lives forever. So then it wound up
- 7:13Speaker 1: being well, maybe we just have to license it for
- 7:15Speaker 1: eternity or like some long period of time. And then
- 7:18Speaker 1: we dropped it. And then later on I again said, man,
- 7:21Speaker 1: we should try to go license the song right on,
- 7:23Speaker 1: and eventually got a license, and I assumed that whoever
- 7:25Speaker 1: was doing it was dealing with you.
- 7:27Speaker 4: Yeah, well we had sort of a falling out. I've
- 7:34Speaker 4: been hard to work with over the years, and so
- 7:39Speaker 4: it just I just sort of just wasn't doing that anymore,
- 7:45Speaker 4: and a lot of things just didn't work out the
- 7:48Speaker 4: way I wanted. I said no to a bunch of
- 7:52Speaker 4: things I probably should have said yes to, got it
- 7:55Speaker 4: And anyways, this all ends up being me and my
- 7:59Speaker 4: career are sort of strangers. And then I started playing
- 8:06Speaker 4: in a bluegrass band called the gravel Yard, and I
- 8:10Speaker 4: just really loved it because it really challenged me because
- 8:13Speaker 4: that's a tough music to play. It's very fastes and
- 8:17Speaker 4: it's just wild. And so I'm really glad I did
- 8:21Speaker 4: that because it got me back into playing. And also
- 8:24Speaker 4: I met Charlotte in the gravel Yard and started dating,
- 8:29Speaker 4: so yeah, she's here with me. She has to keep
- 8:32Speaker 4: me in line.
- 8:34Speaker 1: But You've been a musician your whole life, right.
- 8:36Speaker 4: I have been since. I actually have videos of me
- 8:41Speaker 4: dressed up in a cowboy hat with feathers on it
- 8:46Speaker 4: and my shirt tucked in and like alligator skin boots
- 8:50Speaker 4: when I was like four years old, singing all the
- 8:53Speaker 4: words to like pretty much every country's song that came
- 8:56Speaker 4: on the radio, and I knew all the words, like
- 8:59Speaker 4: it was crazy. I wanted to do it from the
- 9:02Speaker 4: time I was really young. So it's it makes it
- 9:07Speaker 4: that much more bittersweet sometimes that I've had this issue
- 9:10Speaker 4: with keeping my career in check and it's just taking
- 9:15Speaker 4: me a long time to mature. Honestly, I thought I
- 9:19Speaker 4: knew a lot of things that I had no idea about,
- 9:22Speaker 4: and there were other things I was so worried about
- 9:24Speaker 4: that didn't really, they weren't that important to me as
- 9:29Speaker 4: a person. They were just ego trip sort of things
- 9:33Speaker 4: I was dealing with, you know, and worrying too much
- 9:39Speaker 4: about how I looked doing what I was doing instead
- 9:42Speaker 4: of what I was doing, you know, and the outcome
- 9:46Speaker 4: of that being positive for my life. You know, a
- 9:49Speaker 4: lot of people don't learn that sort of thing, and
- 9:51Speaker 4: there's a lot of people that are born just surviving,
- 9:55Speaker 4: you know, And so it's just it's taking me a
- 10:01Speaker 4: while to come around. You know, I got it.
- 10:03Speaker 1: Well, we're gonna dig in on that. You're gonna play
- 10:05Speaker 1: some music for us. Yeah, we're gonna talk about if
- 10:07Speaker 1: the roses don't kill us. First, we all hear a
- 10:10Speaker 1: cautionary tale about drinking with musicians.
- 10:14Speaker 4: I've got some of those.
- 10:18Speaker 1: Real quick. Tony Peterson is with us, Doctor Randall Chester Chili, Cal, Charlotte, Chili.
- 10:25Speaker 1: We keep wanting to chili. Can you tell the cautionary
- 10:28Speaker 1: tale about drinking? Set it up? Should I set it up?
- 10:31Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 10:32Speaker 1: Yeah, let's see that. Because you love this story. Yeah,
- 10:34Speaker 1: so it's my favorite. Now your story. So I don't
- 10:38Speaker 1: know about that. Hold your guitar up, Hold your guitar up. Chili.
- 10:42Speaker 1: So Uh. I only thought we're doing this only now
- 10:45Speaker 1: because now and then we have musicians in so we
- 10:49Speaker 1: so we had co Wetzel, We had co Wetzel on
- 10:52Speaker 1: the show, and when he was in town to do
- 10:53Speaker 1: the show, we went duck hunt and Chili thought it
- 10:56Speaker 1: would be a good idea to go out drinking with
- 10:57Speaker 1: those guys. They get to playing pool, and they get
- 11:03Speaker 1: to bet, and then they get to drinking and eventually
- 11:05Speaker 1: they start trading shotguns.
- 11:09Speaker 8: In a nutshell, yeah, in a nutshell No. Actually, our
- 11:13Speaker 8: lovely Carinn texted me and said, hey, you need to
- 11:17Speaker 8: send We need to get these guys some some duck
- 11:19Speaker 8: hunting stuff. And it was a Sunday Veterans Day weekend
- 11:24Speaker 8: and I was.
- 11:26Speaker 1: Like, yeah, I'll do that.
- 11:27Speaker 8: And so I meet them at the local watering hole
- 11:30Speaker 8: the Cat'spaw You're Mosman classic joint for those of you
- 11:34Speaker 8: who don't know, and hand off the gear and they
- 11:38Speaker 8: invite me to stay. The Cowboys were playing that night
- 11:40Speaker 8: and they're all those boys from Texas. So but yeah,
- 11:43Speaker 8: and you know, I had a few drinks. I would
- 11:46Speaker 8: say it's more of a cautionary tale about just making
- 11:49Speaker 8: making trades when you don't have what you want in hand.
- 11:54Speaker 3: So anyways, you.
- 11:58Speaker 8: Know, for the and then for those of you who
- 12:00Speaker 8: don't know CO probably I think he CO plays with
- 12:02Speaker 8: the Gibson like J forty five on stage or something
- 12:05Speaker 8: like that. And he saw my shotgun in the back
- 12:08Speaker 8: of my truck and I said, hey, you want trade,
- 12:11Speaker 8: I'll take that one of your guitars that you play
- 12:13Speaker 8: with on stage.
- 12:14Speaker 1: And he was like, yeah, man, that's all right, that's cool.
- 12:16Speaker 1: Let's do that and tell the shotgun your head.
- 12:19Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 12:19Speaker 8: The shotgun I was running at the time was a
- 12:22Speaker 8: Frankie twelve gage. I was actually the first shotgun I
- 12:26Speaker 8: ever purchased, like me personally, well, like I went.
- 12:30Speaker 1: Some kind of hand me down or whatever.
- 12:32Speaker 8: No, no, I went to Shields there in South Dakota
- 12:35Speaker 8: and I bought it and that was like that was mine. Yeah,
- 12:38Speaker 8: and then you derived in life. Yeah, I had made it.
- 12:42Speaker 8: I think it was my eighteenth birthday. Brought some scratch offs,
- 12:45Speaker 8: some cigars, and a shotgun, joined the Marines and then yeah, yeah.
- 12:52Speaker 1: The American way trying to bring your shotgun.
- 12:55Speaker 3: Yeah, they wouldn't left.
- 13:02Speaker 8: But yeah, and so well, so we agree, and you know,
- 13:07Speaker 8: it's just a shotgun. I guess it's not super important,
- 13:10Speaker 8: but I was excited to get potentially like the Gibson
- 13:13Speaker 8: J forty five.
- 13:15Speaker 3: Really nice guitar.
- 13:18Speaker 1: Or something, or just something something that's not this thing.
- 13:22Speaker 10: Well you got something.
- 13:23Speaker 3: So you're saying as as you guys.
- 13:26Speaker 1: Not watching, for everybody not watching on our YouTube channel,
- 13:30Speaker 1: it's uh when he when he says something he's got
- 13:32Speaker 1: a guitar, and what's that on hundred fifty doar guitar? Yeah,
- 13:35Speaker 1: it's about about with a big picture of licking his
- 13:40Speaker 1: fingers his finger. Yeah, he's staring at licking off his finger.
- 13:44Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 13:45Speaker 4: That's also that kind of photography with a hard shadow
- 13:48Speaker 4: in the background.
- 13:49Speaker 8: Yeah, it's like too much primo. He also for those
- 13:54Speaker 8: that are not watching the video, and even the ones
- 13:56Speaker 8: that are, I probably can't see this, but for the
- 14:00Speaker 8: nickname is c h I l l y always cold,
- 14:04Speaker 8: always cold chili, Yes, and he likes He decided to
- 14:08Speaker 8: spell it c h I l I So he likes
- 14:11Speaker 8: like chili, like a bollet chill.
- 14:13Speaker 4: You're too hot?
- 14:14Speaker 8: Yeah, yeah, but really I think that upsets me. Oh
- 14:18Speaker 8: and when he addressed it and he sent it to me,
- 14:20Speaker 8: it said Aaron, which is obviously not my first name,
- 14:23Speaker 8: and so.
- 14:25Speaker 3: He's the type of guy who wants a dude licking
- 14:27Speaker 3: his finger on his guitar, not a chili.
- 14:30Speaker 1: Though.
- 14:30Speaker 11: I was so excited as I had just bought a
- 14:35Speaker 11: D eighteen. Yeah, and we play together sometimes, so I
- 14:39Speaker 11: was like, oh man, what's what's he going to send you?
- 14:41Speaker 7: What's he going to send you?
- 14:42Speaker 3: Anyway?
- 14:43Speaker 1: I know you're trying to spin this off as something
- 14:45Speaker 1: other than the cautionary tale about drinking, but I think
- 14:48Speaker 1: it's cautionary tear about drinking. Well, we'll let the we'll
- 14:50Speaker 1: let the viewers decide what. I don't think they ever
- 14:52Speaker 1: should have repealed prohibition. I really know. We you can
- 15:00Speaker 1: get into that because a jump much money out of
- 15:03Speaker 1: head if they hadn't, if they hadn't repealed prohibition, probably
- 15:07Speaker 1: have more than you have now. I have more brain
- 15:10Speaker 1: cells too, probably, and you'd have more more.
- 15:13Speaker 3: Shot or a better guitar.
- 15:16Speaker 8: But yeah, anyway, some months go by and like I
- 15:18Speaker 8: don't get anything, and like I'm you know, I'm not
- 15:20Speaker 8: worried about it. I'm just kind of like, you know,
- 15:24Speaker 8: I'll take it for what it is. Maybe just chalk
- 15:26Speaker 8: this up to as a loss and then and it's
- 15:28Speaker 8: like six months go by and I finally get a
- 15:31Speaker 8: guitar in the mail and it comes in a cardboard box.
- 15:34Speaker 8: It doesn't look like it's in a hard case or
- 15:36Speaker 8: anything like that, and I'm like, I'm not too excited
- 15:39Speaker 8: about this, and uh so I opened it up and
- 15:42Speaker 8: there's old Cole Wetzel licking ice cream off his finger
- 15:46Speaker 8: or whatever, and.
- 15:50Speaker 1: I don't think it's ice cream.
- 15:54Speaker 8: Well anyways, so that yeah, that's my story, and I,
- 15:58Speaker 8: uh am I mad now now, I mean because.
- 16:01Speaker 1: Think about the joy it's brought me.
- 16:03Speaker 7: Yeah, I know everywhere we go, You're like, you know,
- 16:06Speaker 7: let me, there's probably.
- 16:07Speaker 1: So much joy. I'm already to buy you the shotgun
- 16:09Speaker 1: because I don't drink, so I have a lot of money.
- 16:12Speaker 1: I'm already to buy you the shotgun that did, or
- 16:16Speaker 1: buy you the guitar you wanted, just because I like
- 16:18Speaker 1: telling the story about that guitar so much. I've gotten
- 16:20Speaker 1: I've got a thousand bucks out of pleasure out of that.
- 16:26Speaker 8: Yeah, six months from now, get a picture of Steve
- 16:29Speaker 8: locking his.
- 16:29Speaker 1: Finger on the guitar.
- 16:31Speaker 6: Chilli.
- 16:31Speaker 1: When that thing in my locking finger picture, I'm gonna
- 16:36Speaker 1: have a look up this is a look of satisfaction. Yeah,
- 16:38Speaker 1: I'm gonna have a look of like.
- 16:43Speaker 10: When you opened the box and saw that, did you
- 16:46Speaker 10: pick it up and strum it as you would, I
- 16:48Speaker 10: assume any other guitar in the world, or did you
- 16:51Speaker 10: just slide it back down into the box.
- 16:53Speaker 3: No, I can honestly say I didn't.
- 16:55Speaker 8: I didn't tune this guitar until Chester is over at
- 16:58Speaker 8: my place about two weeks ago. I've had this guitar
- 17:02Speaker 8: for probably over a year and a half.
- 17:03Speaker 3: Now, well, we tried to.
- 17:05Speaker 8: We tried and it didn't work, and like then I
- 17:08Speaker 8: tried again. Yeah, it's just like.
- 17:09Speaker 1: Chili, play a couple of licks on air. Just sing
- 17:11Speaker 1: your favorite song, something you wrote. It's gonna be something
- 17:13Speaker 1: you wrote. Oh I love Chili's voice. This is not
- 17:18Speaker 1: a good guitar to do this. Hun First, lick your finger.
- 17:21Speaker 1: Maybe he cut his finger on the string and he's
- 17:23Speaker 1: licking the blood off it.
- 17:25Speaker 8: He's got a cocktail and I found out because one
- 17:28Speaker 8: of his buddies moved up here, and uh, I was like, hey,
- 17:31Speaker 8: you need to text co Wetzel and like say thanks
- 17:33Speaker 8: for the guitar. Chili really likes it, and that's what
- 17:36Speaker 8: he did, and co texted back and said that one
- 17:39Speaker 8: of these guitars sold at auction for like thirty six k. Yeah,
- 17:44Speaker 8: and I'm like, huh, I don't know who would have
- 17:46Speaker 8: bought that, but.
- 17:51Speaker 3: Yeah, quite.
- 17:53Speaker 8: Yeah, I mean yeah, I mean that's just a taste.
- 17:57Speaker 1: I'm not going to christ Jenny. Do you let other
- 17:59Speaker 1: people play guitar?
- 18:00Speaker 4: Oh? Oh yeah, you can play.
- 18:05Speaker 1: Just a little quick lick. Just want I want everybody see
- 18:08Speaker 1: how talented Chili is. You should get a record deal.
- 18:12Speaker 2: Yeah, thank you.
- 18:16Speaker 1: She might use it. That's sweet looking rig right there? Man,
- 18:20Speaker 1: I like call the little black tear drops missing?
- 18:23Speaker 3: Hey Chester, do you want to point your mic at
- 18:25Speaker 3: the guitar a little bit?

- 19:55Speaker 1: Oh oh oh.

- 20:32Speaker 1: Chili's linger ficking good guitar, fingerlicking good guitar good. All
- 20:42Speaker 1: right now, Tony Peterson just recently wrote an article for
- 20:48Speaker 1: us and he's in He's in the room today instead
- 20:50Speaker 1: of joining remote. Stop believing you live in a mature
- 20:53Speaker 1: buck black hole. Everybody does. Everybody does, everybody does. You
- 20:59Speaker 1: don't leave this true?
- 21:00Speaker 13: No, I don't think it's true. Can I Can I
- 21:02Speaker 13: say something? I want to give Corinna suggestion here. The
- 21:08Speaker 13: more of these podcasts I do with you, I'm a
- 21:10Speaker 13: little surprised he hasn't slipped some adderall into your coffee
- 21:12Speaker 13: in the morning, just to keep you on the straight
- 21:14Speaker 13: and narrow, because there's.
- 21:15Speaker 1: A lot of I got a lot of jumping around, and.
- 21:20Speaker 13: Now I'm just I'm kind of obsessed with the idea,
- 21:24Speaker 13: not just in I mean I apply it to hunting, right.
- 21:26Speaker 13: But everybody's like, oh, if I only lived in Iowa,
- 21:29Speaker 13: i'd have big bucks, or if I only lived this place,
- 21:32Speaker 13: or if I had this property, And I'm like, they're
- 21:34Speaker 13: out there all over No, yeah they are. What did
- 21:37Speaker 13: you kill an Oklahoma on public land down there?
- 21:41Speaker 1: Nice little bark? Now?
- 21:44Speaker 13: Do you think that most people hunting that public land
- 21:46Speaker 13: would consider that a little buck?
- 21:47Speaker 1: No? Right, that'd be a nice buck? Right? And how
- 21:50Speaker 1: many people do you think you I was just trying
- 21:53Speaker 1: to counter your argument. But adderall is of ADHD medication.
- 22:00Speaker 1: The Mitchepburd joke where he he's not afflicted, he doesn't
- 22:05Speaker 1: have ADHD, but his buddy he takes one of his
- 22:07Speaker 1: buddies ADHD pills, and then he said. I spent the
- 22:11Speaker 1: rest of the day thinking to myself, there's got to
- 22:13Speaker 1: be more to that story. Anyways, go on, Yes, yeah,
- 22:22Speaker 1: they're all over it, but I feel like some places
- 22:25Speaker 1: they're not though. But it's all relative, right, I.
- 22:29Speaker 3: Mean, so we talk a lot like fishing six inch
- 22:33Speaker 3: Brookie stream and then you get a seven inch brook drought, right,
- 22:36Speaker 3: Holy cow, look at the size of this thing, right.
- 22:38Speaker 13: Yeah, but I think in the white tail space, a
- 22:42Speaker 13: lot of people sort of talk down on like if
- 22:45Speaker 13: you take the Pope and young minimum hundred and twenty
- 22:46Speaker 13: five inches for a typical, people will talk about like
- 22:50Speaker 13: a little one hundred and twenty five inch or like
- 22:53Speaker 13: a young like it's kind of like a they're kind
- 22:56Speaker 13: of dismissive of it. Yeah, but I would bet that
- 22:59Speaker 13: ninety nine percent of all deer hunters out there that
- 23:02Speaker 13: see one hundred and twenty five incher walking down the trailer,
- 23:04Speaker 13: like there's a big buck coming and I'm gonna sure,
- 23:07Speaker 13: and it's that's not like that crazy of a bar
- 23:10Speaker 13: to get to, and so so much of this is
- 23:12Speaker 13: like just kind of in our heads, you know, like
- 23:15Speaker 13: I know Chris is probably going to get into this,
- 23:17Speaker 13: but I was. I was reading the story about you
- 23:19Speaker 13: the Carencent out to us, and that kind of mentality
- 23:23Speaker 13: sort of bleeds into all parts of our lives. Like
- 23:25Speaker 13: you think, oh, I can't get sober, I'm wired wrong.
- 23:29Speaker 13: It's like now you have this built an excuse to fail,
- 23:32Speaker 13: you know, like I'm never going to kill a big
- 23:34Speaker 13: buck because I don't live where they're at. And I
- 23:38Speaker 13: think that's I think when you start with that mindset,
- 23:41Speaker 13: you're just screwed because you've already given yourself an hop.
- 23:44Speaker 1: Yeah, it's like the guy that wrote in that we
- 23:46Speaker 1: always like to have a laugh about who wrote in
- 23:48Speaker 1: a letter to us that was signed a piste off
- 23:50Speaker 1: Michigan deer hunter, and it was it was that by
- 23:57Speaker 1: the time the hunting season opens, all the big buck
- 24:00Speaker 1: have been killed right by youth hunters right and crossbow
- 24:04Speaker 1: hunters in whatever right, they're not there anymore. Yeah, I
- 24:08Speaker 1: mean it's defeatist, right.
- 24:09Speaker 13: It's easier to have a built in excuse for failure
- 24:13Speaker 13: than to put in the work to get there, you know.
- 24:16Speaker 13: I mean you see this a lot. You're seeing people,
- 24:19Speaker 13: a lot of Colorado residents are really celebrating. The non
- 24:22Speaker 13: residents are now in twenty twenty five and beyond, it's
- 24:25Speaker 13: going to be all draw for ELK tags, you know,
- 24:27Speaker 13: no more over the counter. And you see these guys
- 24:30Speaker 13: who are like, you can't go out and kill a
- 24:33Speaker 13: bowl on public land in and over the counter unit
- 24:36Speaker 13: can do it? Too much pressure, too many non residents.
- 24:39Speaker 13: And I go, there are people who drive in from
- 24:43Speaker 13: Pennsylvania who do that, and you live there.
- 24:47Speaker 1: But your idea knowing that but thousands right, yeah right.
- 24:50Speaker 13: I've never had a bad hunt on a over the
- 24:53Speaker 13: counter hunt on public land out there, It's all. I've
- 24:57Speaker 13: always had opportunities. And I look at that and I go,
- 25:00Speaker 13: the reason that you don't is because you've given yourself
- 25:03Speaker 13: and out you're not going to put in the work.
- 25:06Speaker 13: And that's just everybody nobody likes to hear. Tony Well,
- 25:10Speaker 13: this is I get, dude, I get so fired up.
- 25:12Speaker 13: You're gonna trigger me here here, cal I get so
- 25:15Speaker 13: fired up about this resident non resident fighting thing where
- 25:19Speaker 13: I never hear anybody say, wow, the pressure on public
- 25:23Speaker 13: land is more than it was ten years ago. So
- 25:25Speaker 13: I'm going to scout harder or or hunt mid October
- 25:29Speaker 13: versus the rut whenever he's going to be there something
- 25:31Speaker 13: like that. There's it's always like, can I take you
- 25:35Speaker 13: out of the equation to make it easier for me?
- 25:37Speaker 1: You know what I mean? And if things getting harder
- 25:41Speaker 1: was a reason not to do things, then everybody would
- 25:43Speaker 1: have quit hunting. Jim Bridger wouldn't have hunted, right, Bridger
- 25:49Speaker 1: bitched about all the pressure, right, Jim Bridger bitched about
- 25:53Speaker 1: all the pressure. Yeah, things aren't like they were well.
- 25:58Speaker 13: Right, Yeah, people in the county now and staff four
- 26:02Speaker 13: you know.
- 26:02Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean talk to the Blackfeet, right, see how
- 26:06Speaker 1: they're feeling about pressure.
- 26:08Speaker 13: Yeah, But it's it's just so easy for us to
- 26:11Speaker 13: sort of, you know, just just believe that there's some
- 26:16Speaker 13: other reason we can't do this, like it's out of
- 26:19Speaker 13: our control to find this success or do whatever. And
- 26:22Speaker 13: it's just like, well you were talking about playing guitar
- 26:25Speaker 13: like that, that moment's passed for me in my life
- 26:27Speaker 13: and I'm like, no, yep.
- 26:29Speaker 1: Two moments passed for me.
- 26:30Speaker 4: There will say this moment, well, my moment.
- 26:34Speaker 1: To learn Spanish and my moment to learn how to
- 26:37Speaker 1: play a guitar have passed.
- 26:38Speaker 13: You could learn them both at the same time.
- 26:40Speaker 1: Flamenco, something happened LaBamba.
- 26:44Speaker 3: But I do have to say Steve has spent a
- 26:46Speaker 3: remarkable amount of time in Mexico without really annoying any
- 26:53Speaker 3: any Spanish.
- 26:54Speaker 13: Hopes on my children, because in his head he's like,
- 26:57Speaker 13: I'm done, I can't do that, that's past.
- 26:59Speaker 3: He's compared, mentalized and moved on. It's like, Nope, don't.
- 27:02Speaker 1: Know that I pinned all my hopes of my children.
- 27:04Speaker 3: Tortilla. Give me some of that flat broad It's.
- 27:10Speaker 11: Terrible, Like a stand up bass guy with those big
- 27:15Speaker 11: fingers of yours.
- 27:17Speaker 1: I'd like to tell you what uh Tommy Ed's in
- 27:22Speaker 1: the blue collar scholar and describing uh my fingers. I
- 27:29Speaker 1: don't want to use a bad word. He basically has
- 27:32Speaker 1: a fist full of packers. But use a dirty but
- 27:37Speaker 1: use a naughty word. So it's yeah. So it's like
- 27:46Speaker 1: a self help article that you wrote.
- 27:49Speaker 13: Just a lot of the content we make is thinly
- 27:52Speaker 13: veiled self help.
- 27:53Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 27:53Speaker 1: But but but I'm hunted with you and I believe
- 27:55Speaker 1: it because you are you are uh like not a
- 28:01Speaker 1: like I don't want to say, like an optim You're
- 28:03Speaker 1: an optimist, but but not you don't have you don't
- 28:06Speaker 1: you don't have the rosy disposition, but you are like
- 28:11Speaker 1: not taking no for an answer.
- 28:13Speaker 7: That was a very pragmatic insult, you know.
- 28:17Speaker 1: I mean, you're not like today's the day boys, anything
- 28:20Speaker 1: could happen. Yeah, I mean, You're just gonna grind it
- 28:24Speaker 1: out and there is no other way that ship is
- 28:28Speaker 1: gonna go except that you're gonna do what needs to
- 28:30Speaker 1: happen to make it happen. And like other conversations are
- 28:33Speaker 1: not welcome. Well the scowl if need be with a
- 28:39Speaker 1: scowl on your face.
- 28:40Speaker 13: It just because I know, I know the process, you know.
- 28:44Speaker 13: And I mean that's to be fair. That was not
- 28:47Speaker 13: like a totally uh normal take on me, because I
- 28:52Speaker 13: was I was taking my boss's bosses boss on a
- 28:56Speaker 13: public land whitetail hunt. So I was stressed to no end.
- 29:00Speaker 13: But honestly, it when I when I was a freelance
- 29:05Speaker 13: writer way back in the day, and I was like,
- 29:06Speaker 13: I'm going to focus on public land white tails because
- 29:10Speaker 13: the magazine I was working at the time, everybody kept
- 29:12Speaker 13: writing in there like I'm sick of the unrealistic stuff.
- 29:15Speaker 13: You know, I don't know a thousand acres in southern Iowa,
- 29:17Speaker 13: and I'm like, as kind of a no namer, I'm like,
- 29:20Speaker 13: I'm going to go. I didn't have kids yet, I'm like,
- 29:22Speaker 13: I'm gonna I'm gonna go after this hard. So many
- 29:25Speaker 13: people told me you you'll never kill one big buck
- 29:29Speaker 13: on public land ever, like you can't do it, you
- 29:32Speaker 13: can't make a living at it. And you would hear
- 29:35Speaker 13: this from state to state. Right you're going to Nebraska,
- 29:37Speaker 13: talk to some dude at the gas station or whatever.
- 29:40Speaker 13: It was always the same story. All the all the
- 29:44Speaker 13: big ones are killed off, there's not enough public land
- 29:47Speaker 13: in this state, whatever. And I would go out and
- 29:49Speaker 13: have awesome hunts, just fun hunts where sometimes you'd kill
- 29:54Speaker 13: big ones, and I was like, there's just so much
- 29:56Speaker 13: of this, like these beliefs that just aren't true. But
- 30:00Speaker 13: and you kind of figure out like our hunt where
- 30:02Speaker 13: you're like, there's there's no path to success for me
- 30:07Speaker 13: anyway other than just like you gotta figure it out
- 30:11Speaker 13: and go every day and you got to use that
- 30:13Speaker 13: time in between the CITs to scout like we did.
- 30:16Speaker 13: But eventually they're gonna give you something to work with,
- 30:20Speaker 13: you know, and there's gonna be nobody in that parking area,
- 30:22Speaker 13: so you can go in there and it's just gonna
- 30:23Speaker 13: line up. But it's stressful, you know, because the weather
- 30:26Speaker 13: changes all that stuff. But it's like so possible. You
- 30:29Speaker 13: just kind of gotta believe it.
- 30:30Speaker 1: You did stuff that I wouldn't have done. Where he
- 30:32Speaker 1: I don't know if you guys ever heard the story.
- 30:34Speaker 1: He kills we killed three deer out of a tree,
- 30:38Speaker 1: a tree. He's he kills two out of a tree
- 30:45Speaker 1: and sees a buck gets kind of bumped like we
- 30:49Speaker 1: were in a nice buck shows up and bumps. I
- 30:54Speaker 1: would have been like, dude, you killed two deer out
- 30:56Speaker 1: of the tree and spook that buck. That place is done.
- 31:00Speaker 1: And he's like, tomorrow, go back and do X, Y
- 31:03Speaker 1: and Z, and I'm like, this is the dumbest thing
- 31:07Speaker 1: in the world, and go back and here comes the
- 31:09Speaker 1: couch just because the layout and whatever.
- 31:12Speaker 13: You know, well, I mean, think about that that buck.
- 31:17Speaker 1: I don't know how old.
- 31:18Speaker 13: It is just nice, really nice buck for Oklahoma public Land.
- 31:22Speaker 13: How many times do you think that deer has been bumped?
- 31:26Speaker 1: And we were multiple times a day. I think, think
- 31:29Speaker 1: about how I don't know about that multiple times a day.
- 31:32Speaker 1: He's alarmed by.
- 31:33Speaker 13: Something right, right, every day of his life in the season,
- 31:36Speaker 13: he hears somebody part, watches somebody walk in, smells where
- 31:39Speaker 13: they went through some some level of encounter with humans, right.
- 31:44Speaker 4: And.
- 31:47Speaker 1: Dog dude yelling at dog right, fishing guy, fishing farmer
- 31:53Speaker 1: doing something.
- 31:55Speaker 13: I mean, you know, yeah, they you're not going to
- 31:58Speaker 13: shake him off their routine that way. And then if
- 32:00Speaker 13: that deer had had looked up into the tree and sauce,
- 32:04Speaker 13: we would have moved to that next spot down. But
- 32:06Speaker 13: because we were down one hundred yards from the stand,
- 32:08Speaker 13: gotten that deer and he walked up nine thirty in
- 32:11Speaker 13: the morning, I'm like, this deer's he's just here, like
- 32:14Speaker 13: he's close to where he wants to be moving. You know,
- 32:17Speaker 13: it wasn't like first light, and he was trucking through
- 32:19Speaker 13: and we hadn't hunted that place in an evening yet.
- 32:22Speaker 13: And when I found it, I was like, this is
- 32:24Speaker 13: gonna be like in my head, I'm like, when we
- 32:26Speaker 13: sit here in the evening, it's gonna be good. I
- 32:28Speaker 13: didn't know it would be as good in the morning. I
- 32:29Speaker 13: thought it'd be pretty good. But it's just cool, man,
- 32:32Speaker 13: And you know, people think you can't do that, and
- 32:35Speaker 13: it's like.
- 32:36Speaker 3: Well, the the comment of like, uh, not a monster,
- 32:44Speaker 3: but I got a buck, right, like all the qualifiers
- 32:47Speaker 3: that you hear throughout the season. The only response that
- 32:51Speaker 3: anybody who hunts should give to anyone who says, oh,
- 32:55Speaker 3: I got a deer should be great deer. Hey, if
- 33:00Speaker 3: they're happy with it, you be happy with it. B
- 33:04Speaker 3: If you'd say, oh, that's not a great deer, they're
- 33:06Speaker 3: gonna think, oh, there must be bigger ones around and
- 33:09Speaker 3: you're just shooting yourself in the foot anyway. So it's
- 33:13Speaker 3: always a great deer. Yeah, And man, you shouldn't if
- 33:16Speaker 3: you don't like it, why'd you shoot it?
- 33:19Speaker 1: Right? That's a good point, right. Another article from our website,
- 33:26Speaker 1: it's kind of like crazy. This is by Jordan Sillers,
- 33:32Speaker 1: like an alarming string of animal moms attacking Coloraden's My
- 33:38Speaker 1: nature is mad at Coloradin's May thirty, Elk attack, June
- 33:44Speaker 1: third Elk attack, June seven, Elk attack, June seven deer
- 33:53Speaker 1: attack think of that all in the same area. Well,
- 33:58Speaker 1: it's all described out. But yeah, ungulates have had enough.
- 34:04Speaker 1: Ungulates are up to here.
- 34:05Speaker 13: There's like an aggression team.
- 34:07Speaker 3: Well first, yeah, everybody's got.
- 34:10Speaker 1: Are like chilly with that guitar? Had enough finger looking good?
- 34:17Speaker 1: Oh yeah, we reported on this a whole bunch over
- 34:21Speaker 1: the years. We haven't beat the horse of death. It's
- 34:25Speaker 1: not time to ride on. Well, we reported on this
- 34:28Speaker 1: a bunch. So the Macaw tribe in Washington years ago
- 34:31Speaker 1: there was a big hubbloo. When how many years ago?
- 34:38Speaker 1: Was it twenty five years ago? How is that really?
- 34:40Speaker 1: I remember that like it was like true, I was
- 34:47Speaker 1: like an adult when that happened twenty five years ago.
- 34:48Speaker 1: I was an adult. Twenty five years ago. The Macaw
- 34:52Speaker 1: tribe in Washington exercised their treaty rights and killed a
- 34:55Speaker 1: grey whale. And they hadn't killed a grey whale since
- 34:58Speaker 1: the twenties when grey whale population started to collapse. You
- 35:05Speaker 1: can imagine how much news that made. You know, Alaskan
- 35:09Speaker 1: traves have been hunting whales fairly consistency, consistently in another
- 35:15Speaker 1: place too, but they hadn't done it in forever, and
- 35:18Speaker 1: they did twenty five years ago, and it made tons
- 35:21Speaker 1: of news. Everybode's pissed off. They ran into some problems
- 35:25Speaker 1: they had. Part of the thing is, like you know,
- 35:27Speaker 1: whale hunting is a huge part of their cultural identity
- 35:30Speaker 1: and cultural heritage. But they had lost some of the
- 35:34Speaker 1: skill set. So they got the gray whale, and I think,
- 35:37Speaker 1: if I remember right, they ran up against time. Right,
- 35:42Speaker 1: they're trying to process the whale. A lot of stuff
- 35:46Speaker 1: spoiled before they could get it adequately addressed. They haven't
- 35:52Speaker 1: killed one since they've been petitioning did they want to?
- 35:57Speaker 1: They've been petitioning the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to
- 36:04Speaker 1: give them permission to again go out and exercise their
- 36:06Speaker 1: treaty right, and they have been again granted permission to
- 36:11Speaker 1: go and resume very limited whaling. They're looking at doing
- 36:19Speaker 1: what many are they looking to do?
- 36:20Speaker 2: Here?
- 36:23Speaker 1: They've been granted so last time we talked about this,
- 36:26Speaker 1: they were petitioning for a waiver under the Marine Mammal
- 36:29Speaker 1: Protection Act of nineteen seventy two, and a judge just
- 36:32Speaker 1: granted them a waiver under the Marine Mammal Protection Act
- 36:37Speaker 1: and they will resume very limited whaling. Of how much.
- 36:42Speaker 3: I want to say they can get some pinnipeds too.
- 36:44Speaker 1: In the next decade, they're gonna hunt up twenty five
- 36:47Speaker 1: They have permission to hunt or hunt up to twenty
- 36:49Speaker 1: five whales. I find it like kind of surprising that
- 36:52Speaker 1: they're even I find it a little bit surprising that
- 36:57Speaker 1: the tribe has even been like waiting for formalized mission,
- 37:04Speaker 1: that they even were willing to play such a protracted
- 37:08Speaker 1: legal game because it's in their treaty right to do so.
- 37:12Speaker 1: Historic like the they signed a treaty with the US
- 37:15Speaker 1: government saying you have the right to do X, Y
- 37:17Speaker 1: and z, and that they wilfully pulled away from that
- 37:21Speaker 1: to wait for everything and not just to eventually say, well,
- 37:25Speaker 1: sorry boys, but we're going right.
- 37:28Speaker 3: Just in preservation of the culture would be reason enough.
- 37:35Speaker 1: All the usual players are very upset about this.
- 37:40Speaker 3: I believe they can. They can hunt sea lions too,
- 37:43Speaker 3: I think so, which should make them a lot of
- 37:45Speaker 3: people's friends.
- 37:46Speaker 1: Yeah, that's true.
- 37:48Speaker 3: On the salmon fish and.
- 37:49Speaker 1: A lot of salmon fisherm and be like, by god,
- 37:51Speaker 1: that's a great idea.
- 37:53Speaker 3: Exactly, why don't you get away while you're at it.
- 37:56Speaker 1: So the Macaw tribe of Washington am I saying that right,
- 37:58Speaker 1: Macaw Macau. I think so the macatribe of Washington set
- 38:03Speaker 1: to resume whaling, and I think that would make them
- 38:06Speaker 1: the only Lower forty eight, the only active whaling culture
- 38:11Speaker 1: in the Lower forty eight. Yeah, yeah, it's gotta be the.
- 38:15Speaker 3: First time around.
- 38:16Speaker 2: Uh.
- 38:17Speaker 3: It was really interesting, as you'll recall, because there was
- 38:21Speaker 3: like a lot of people who are just against whaling.
- 38:24Speaker 3: But the way that they weighed in is by saying that, well,
- 38:31Speaker 3: if this is a cultural thing, why are they using
- 38:33Speaker 3: motor boats? Why are they you know, it's.
- 38:36Speaker 1: Just saying, yeah, I know how you Indians are supposed
- 38:40Speaker 1: to do things exactly.
- 38:41Speaker 3: Yes, yeah, just jacket.
- 38:44Speaker 1: Yeah they killed they harpooned and killed it with a gun,
- 38:46Speaker 1: and people like that's not what Indians do. I know
- 38:49Speaker 1: all about Indians. Yeah, yeah, I know how they ought
- 38:54Speaker 1: to hunt. I've seen the movies. God bless them in
- 39:01Speaker 1: this case. I'm glad that it turned out the way
- 39:06Speaker 1: that it did for the Macaw tribe.
- 39:09Speaker 3: Yeah, I think it's awesome.
- 39:11Speaker 1: Chris danny Hey born in Arkansas. Did you grow up
- 39:16Speaker 1: You grew up doing some.
- 39:17Speaker 4: Fishing, Yeah, mostly trout fishing on the White River. Yeah,
- 39:23Speaker 4: White River yeah, Jack's Resort, uh in Mountain View, Arkansas.
- 39:29Speaker 4: My grandparents on my well, my my I was adopted
- 39:36Speaker 4: by my uncle, my dad's brother, his wife, her parents,
- 39:41Speaker 4: So my adopted grandparents. They lived there and I really
- 39:46Speaker 4: struck a good relationship with him, and so I'd go
- 39:49Speaker 4: spend sometimes there in the summer.
- 39:53Speaker 1: Why were you adopted? How did it come to be
- 39:55Speaker 1: that you were adopted by your uncle?
- 39:57Speaker 4: Well, my dad he was a uh traveled a lot
- 40:02Speaker 4: doing construction and uh. And my mom, Uh, she just
- 40:08Speaker 4: wasn't real really that grown up when she had us,
- 40:12Speaker 4: you know, so she just was just figuring herself out.
- 40:17Speaker 4: I guess. Uh. So my uncle uh took took over
- 40:22Speaker 4: guardianship of me.
- 40:24Speaker 7: Those your dad's brother, Yeah, they just both.
- 40:27Speaker 4: Were addicts and they both were just like I guess
- 40:33Speaker 4: I kind of was like the parent in a way,
- 40:35Speaker 4: like when I was young, I had to like kind
- 40:37Speaker 4: of take care of them. They were they were a
- 40:39Speaker 4: little bit out of control.
- 40:41Speaker 1: So like partiers beyond partiers.
- 40:44Speaker 4: They weren't together anymore either. Uh. I think that like
- 40:50Speaker 4: my dad was probably like too controlling, and I think
- 40:55Speaker 4: that my mom was wild, and I don't think that
- 40:57Speaker 4: that was like a good mix.
- 41:00Speaker 1: You still in touch those guys, so.
- 41:02Speaker 4: No, actually I'm a orphan now. Both of them are
- 41:06Speaker 4: passed away. Yeah, they're just seized. Yeah.
- 41:09Speaker 1: How old we are they when they died?
- 41:11Speaker 4: My mom was sixty two and my dad was fifty four.
- 41:18Speaker 1: Actually, wow, did they die related to drugs and alcohol?
- 41:22Speaker 4: Yeah? They both did. Yeah. My mom, bless her heart,
- 41:26Speaker 4: had a real bad uh ending, but yeah, it was sad,
- 41:32Speaker 4: but she was able to tell me she loved me
- 41:35Speaker 4: before she passed away, and she was able to wait
- 41:39Speaker 4: till I got there before she passed away, which was
- 41:42Speaker 4: just they just couldn't even the doctor said, like, it
- 41:46Speaker 4: was wild that she had consciousness when I got there,
- 41:48Speaker 4: because she had waited because my sister had called me
- 41:51Speaker 4: and she called my name out and I was able
- 41:55Speaker 4: to just hold her watch she passed away.
- 41:57Speaker 2: You know.
- 41:58Speaker 1: So you did you guys grow up poor?
- 42:01Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 42:05Speaker 7: Yeah we did.
- 42:06Speaker 4: Uh. My dad made good money, but he uh, he
- 42:10Speaker 4: liked gamble and he just he was just wild, you know.
- 42:15Speaker 4: Uh so uh it was always like, you know, we
- 42:19Speaker 4: lived a kind of a crazy life. You know. My
- 42:21Speaker 4: mom taught me to kind of work the system.
- 42:23Speaker 7: You know.
- 42:24Speaker 4: Uh, when I was young, we had food stamps and
- 42:27Speaker 4: and my dad uh uh you know, he he would
- 42:32Speaker 4: work on the weekends doing side jobs. So he had
- 42:35Speaker 4: a company he worked for, and it was just I
- 42:38Speaker 4: don't know where all the money was going because they
- 42:40Speaker 4: were making a lot of it, you know. But uh,
- 42:44Speaker 4: you know, it was two different lives for me when
- 42:46Speaker 4: I got adopted. I went from being able to do
- 42:50Speaker 4: whatever I wanted whenever I wanted, uh, two you know,
- 42:56Speaker 4: being basically like just there was so much authority being
- 43:06Speaker 4: brought down on me so quick that I think I
- 43:09Speaker 4: probably became worse.
- 43:11Speaker 3: You know.
- 43:12Speaker 4: I was really a kind of a good kid when
- 43:14Speaker 4: I could do what I wanted. When I was told
- 43:17Speaker 4: what not to do, I started to not like it.
- 43:20Speaker 4: And my uncle and I had a really hard relationship
- 43:23Speaker 4: because of that. But he is definitely like a father
- 43:28Speaker 4: to me, meaning you know, I love him, uh and
- 43:33Speaker 4: his approval means a lot to me. But I gets
- 43:37Speaker 4: on my nerves.
- 43:38Speaker 3: Chris, Oh for sure. How old were you when you
- 43:41Speaker 3: when the structure change happened.
- 43:44Speaker 4: Oh, it's a crucial time. I was like eleven going
- 43:48Speaker 4: on twelve, while so I was just about to start
- 43:51Speaker 4: going through puberty, which happened really quick for me. I was.
- 43:55Speaker 4: I was obese child. I was a huge kid, was
- 44:00Speaker 4: about four foot tall and I weighed one hundred and
- 44:04Speaker 4: probably sixty pounds. And then the next year in seventh grade,
- 44:08Speaker 4: I was five foot nine. How tall I am now?
- 44:13Speaker 4: And I weighed like one and girls, I was invisible
- 44:18Speaker 4: up to that point. Then all of a sudden, it
- 44:20Speaker 4: was like I was like good looking tall. I got
- 44:23Speaker 4: to be tall for like a year or two. Never
- 44:27Speaker 4: grew another inch. I never grew another inch.
- 44:29Speaker 1: Everybody caught up to you and passed year.
- 44:31Speaker 4: They just I mean, I was like, God, you do
- 44:33Speaker 4: hate me. It's good to know at least you know
- 44:38Speaker 4: he's there, you know.
- 44:41Speaker 1: When uh get back into the how you were exposed
- 44:45Speaker 1: a little bit of fishing.
- 44:46Speaker 4: Yeah, oh uh. Well, you know, I really was one
- 44:51Speaker 4: of those kids that was kind of always like looked
- 44:57Speaker 4: at anything that was living and breathing and was real
- 45:00Speaker 4: freaked out to hurt it in any way. You know,
- 45:03Speaker 4: there's always been people that have I've sort of, you know,
- 45:08Speaker 4: I am. I consider myself a Christian being, being from
- 45:12Speaker 4: the Bible belt. It's just a path of least resistance, honestly,
- 45:16Speaker 4: but I more believe in just God and I don't
- 45:19Speaker 4: believe that anybody gets to decide all of the vocabulary
- 45:23Speaker 4: that needs to be used or anything else particulars. I
- 45:27Speaker 4: know that that's all sort of what that's saying. The
- 45:30Speaker 4: devils in the details?
- 45:31Speaker 3: You mean you don't have to understand Latin to understand God.
- 45:34Speaker 4: I don't know if you do. I'm not sure, but
- 45:36Speaker 4: I have to ask the Catholic Church and I'll get back.
- 45:39Speaker 7: To your So.
- 45:42Speaker 4: I felt really sort of weird about handling animals and
- 45:49Speaker 4: fish and killing animals, but then as I got older,
- 45:54Speaker 4: I sort of that became secondary to things I started
- 45:59Speaker 4: to enjoy way, which were, like, you know, I got
- 46:03Speaker 4: really into, uh, the lures because I'm a collector. I
- 46:08Speaker 4: collect things, antiques, I love just my girlfriend would call
- 46:14Speaker 4: me a order and we have to, like for her sanity,
- 46:18Speaker 4: I have to. When we first moved in together, I
- 46:20Speaker 4: had to basically just get rid of ninety percent of
- 46:23Speaker 4: what I am. She won't say anything, but I can
- 46:26Speaker 4: read it on her face and it's like she was like,
- 46:30Speaker 4: what is And one of my friends actually said, your
- 46:33Speaker 4: girlfriend's kind of a genius, isn't she? And I was like,
- 46:35Speaker 4: why you say that she was? He was like, she
- 46:37Speaker 4: doesn't really like having anything that She's like, it's just
- 46:40Speaker 4: like cleared out, you know, like it's one or two
- 46:43Speaker 4: things in there.
- 46:44Speaker 1: And equated that intelligence.
- 46:46Speaker 4: Yeah, I was like, and so what am I?
- 46:50Speaker 14: You know, I like.
- 46:52Speaker 4: Full of junk. There's you know, I mean, it's.
- 46:55Speaker 3: What is the what's the collection that was the most.
- 47:01Speaker 15: Oh my goodness. I don't know if I'm necessarily irked them,
- 47:06Speaker 15: but there's what baseball cards everywhere? Yeah, stamps everywhere. One
- 47:11Speaker 15: time we drove to Houston and back in one day
- 47:14Speaker 15: to try to.
- 47:17Speaker 4: I thought I had like I thought I had a stamp.
- 47:19Speaker 15: From stamps that were with money.
- 47:22Speaker 5: It didn't work out.
- 47:23Speaker 7: It didn't work out.
- 47:27Speaker 4: Yeah, and more just became like Charlotte like basically paying
- 47:31Speaker 4: to drive me down to Houston and and like me
- 47:34Speaker 4: not even having and her being like you want to
- 47:37Speaker 4: get some food and like maybe like gosh, she's a keeper,
- 47:40Speaker 4: you know, she's a keeper. So but yeah, like lures,
- 47:46Speaker 4: I'm very interested by that sort of thing. I really like.
- 47:50Speaker 4: I like fish and lures a lot of it actually
- 47:52Speaker 4: messing around with trying to to make some and so
- 47:57Speaker 4: down there, Yeah, I will, I'll talk to you.
- 48:03Speaker 1: So when you grew up on like the White River fishing.
- 48:06Speaker 3: Were you like, were you fly fishing spinner?
- 48:09Speaker 4: No, No, I never have done that. Actually, you know
- 48:12Speaker 4: my old manager, uh JT. Van Zant, he's a he's
- 48:16Speaker 4: a he's a big fisherman. Uh And he did a
- 48:19Speaker 4: lot of fly fishing and stuff and told me it
- 48:22Speaker 4: was great, you know, but it seemed like a lot
- 48:24Speaker 4: of work to me.
- 48:25Speaker 7: I'm your van Zant.
- 48:28Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, he was my manager for a while. He
- 48:30Speaker 4: fired me, but he said I was too much like
- 48:34Speaker 4: his dad, so like he sort of fired me.
- 48:37Speaker 5: Really.
- 48:38Speaker 7: Yeah, he's been on the show, has he Yeah.
- 48:40Speaker 4: Yeah he knows me. He mentioned me to him, he'll
- 48:42Speaker 4: get a grin on his face for sure.
- 48:45Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 48:45Speaker 4: He was my manager.
- 48:47Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 48:47Speaker 4: He was a good guy.
- 48:48Speaker 1: He's a fly fishing guy.
- 48:49Speaker 4: Yeah he's great. Yeah, sure is. He should stick to
- 48:52Speaker 4: that too.
- 48:57Speaker 1: He was a manager.
- 48:59Speaker 4: Yeah, he managed is what's that guy's name, the blue
- 49:02Speaker 4: guy that does country sounds kind of like uh Waylon
- 49:05Speaker 4: Jennings And he has a bluegrass album too. Stergel Simpson.
- 49:09Speaker 4: He's his manager. He was at one point. What Yeah, yeah,
- 49:14Speaker 4: he sure was.
- 49:15Speaker 1: Yeah, he was your manager.
- 49:16Speaker 4: He was my manager. He fired you for what he
- 49:19Speaker 4: just being at just not doing my job, not doing
- 49:25Speaker 4: my job, which is I was trying to get back
- 49:27Speaker 4: there when I said that, thanks, but uh he was
- 49:34Speaker 4: he was my yeah, he oh well i'll tell you
- 49:38Speaker 4: what he's he did. He said that, he said, you know,
- 49:41Speaker 4: you kind of scare me, and you remind me of
- 49:43Speaker 4: my dad. You know, his dad was. It was a
- 49:46Speaker 4: terrible addict, great songwriter.
- 49:49Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean he wrote all the songs.
- 49:52Speaker 4: Yeah yeah, and uh last one of them like me.
- 49:55Speaker 4: You know, he got famous, more famous after he passed away.
- 49:58Speaker 4: Uh hint, hint, but yeah, he just I went on
- 50:08Speaker 4: this tour and it was supposed to be sort of
- 50:11Speaker 4: a comeback thing because I had had a falling out
- 50:15Speaker 4: with my label. They wanted me to go to rehab basically,
- 50:18Speaker 4: and uh, I just I went to that tour. I
- 50:26Speaker 4: went to Little Rock, and I relapsed and I just
- 50:30Speaker 4: got stuck there for five years. I swear it was
- 50:33Speaker 4: five years later. I was sitting in jail cell and
- 50:37Speaker 4: in uh Little Rock, Arkansas, and I'd been in there
- 50:40Speaker 4: almost nine months, and I knew no one was gonna
- 50:44Speaker 4: be getting me out, and uh that I that was it,
- 50:50Speaker 4: you know what I mean, Like things had to change
- 50:52Speaker 4: when I came out of there, and they did, you know. Uh,
- 50:56Speaker 4: So I was in there for a year and then
- 50:58Speaker 4: I ended up going to rehab when I got out.
- 51:00Speaker 1: Is this after if the roses don't kill us?
- 51:02Speaker 4: It was, yeah, sure was yeah.
- 51:04Speaker 1: And so what age you start drinking?
- 51:07Speaker 4: Oh, drinking? I can't remember a time I didn't drink. No,
- 51:11Speaker 4: I'm just as a little kid, probably probably young fourteen,
- 51:15Speaker 4: actually probably fourteen. Uh it was Marijuana was the first
- 51:20Speaker 4: thing I really enjoyed. Was like about twelve or so.
- 51:24Speaker 4: I got into that and uh yeah, they were uh,
- 51:28Speaker 4: but drinking for me was always sort of something I
- 51:31Speaker 4: didn't like too much. I didn't like the idea of
- 51:34Speaker 4: getting drunk and waking up and having all these problems,
- 51:37Speaker 4: more problems than you had before you started drinking. Yeah,
- 51:40Speaker 4: because you don't know even and you feel like crap.
- 51:44Speaker 4: You know, that's that wasn't my thing.
- 51:47Speaker 1: So Randall's nodding his head down there.
- 51:49Speaker 3: Yeah, we've been there.
- 51:52Speaker 4: It's just you gotta be tough to do that all
- 51:54Speaker 4: the time, you know. I guess I'm not that tough.
- 51:58Speaker 1: But you got into weed.
- 51:59Speaker 4: Young, oh yeah, I mean never got out of it.
- 52:02Speaker 1: I was listening to a neuroscientist on Terry You ever
- 52:07Speaker 1: hear of an interviewer named Terry Gross. She has a
- 52:10Speaker 1: show called fresh Air. She was interviewing a neuroscientist, and
- 52:13Speaker 1: the neuroscientist was talking about, like, it's kind of hard,
- 52:19Speaker 1: not hard to explain, I want to take a ton
- 52:21Speaker 1: of time to explain it. But if you drinking young,
- 52:25Speaker 1: like drinking young makes alcoholics, you don't. She was talking about,
- 52:30Speaker 1: there's not many drunks that start drinking as adults when
- 52:37Speaker 1: you're when you're when I was a kid, like like
- 52:39Speaker 1: booze was the thing in high school, junior high even, right,
- 52:43Speaker 1: But it's it's that you start drinking young and your
- 52:48Speaker 1: rewrites your brain chemistry, like it offsets what's normal. Yeah, right,
- 52:53Speaker 1: you don't find your sort of like baseline tolerances, your
- 52:57Speaker 1: baseline happiness. You whack this whole thing out of and
- 53:00Speaker 1: that gives you the drunks later. Yeah, if you go
- 53:03Speaker 1: through if you go through maturity and go through adolescents,
- 53:08Speaker 1: and you'd be like at thirty, you're like, I'm gonna
- 53:10Speaker 1: have a drink, Dude, You're not gonna turn into a drunk. Yeah, yeah,
- 53:13Speaker 1: I mean it happens, but not like it does when
- 53:16Speaker 1: you start at fifteen.
- 53:17Speaker 4: That's true. And there's a belief in AA meetings, which
- 53:20Speaker 4: I've gone to a lot of. There's a belief in
- 53:24Speaker 4: there that people stop maturing emotionally when they start drinking.
- 53:30Speaker 4: And I sort of believe that, because what are we
- 53:35Speaker 4: trying to do if we're addicted, We're trying to cover
- 53:39Speaker 4: something up. Most of the time, there's a way that
- 53:42Speaker 4: we're feeling that's good that we like more than the
- 53:44Speaker 4: way we feel so much that we'll keep doing that
- 53:48Speaker 4: over and over, regardless of how much it's hurting us. Therefore,
- 53:51Speaker 4: I do truly believe that we probably do emotionally stop
- 53:54Speaker 4: maturing at that same time when we start reacting to everything,
- 53:59Speaker 4: stop consciously things through. We're just like, Okay, I'm going
- 54:01Speaker 4: to run to this thing, sort of like a rat
- 54:04Speaker 4: stuck in a maze trying to get out. But then
- 54:06Speaker 4: there's this thing that it likes. It just keeps going
- 54:09Speaker 4: back to that, you know, And it'll go to that
- 54:11Speaker 4: before we'll go to the door that's open, you know,
- 54:14Speaker 4: and then it'll be closed by the time they go
- 54:16Speaker 4: over there and do that. Because it's it's a reaction,
- 54:18Speaker 4: it's and I don't know what it is about feeling good.
- 54:21Speaker 4: You know that there's a Levon Helm song feeling good.
- 54:24Speaker 4: All the money in the world spent on feeling good,
- 54:27Speaker 4: and well, I.
- 54:27Speaker 1: Thought, man, feels good to be feeling good again.
- 54:30Speaker 4: Yeah, that's a gooling too, It's one, yeah it is,
- 54:34Speaker 4: but it's it's just, you know, I've been learning that,
- 54:39Speaker 4: you know, my emotions are out of whack. I got
- 54:42Speaker 4: I got to thinking about things. I started thinking, you know,
- 54:44Speaker 4: look who I was raised by. God love them, I
- 54:46Speaker 4: do love them, but they are crazy people. The two
- 54:49Speaker 4: people that raised me were nuts, and so there's no
- 54:52Speaker 4: way that I could have come out with all that
- 54:54Speaker 4: much right. Like, you know, I was thinking I was
- 54:57Speaker 4: right about everything, and I was mad at the world,
- 55:00Speaker 4: and I had to go, you know, as possible that
- 55:03Speaker 4: I don't know everything exactly, you know, like I think
- 55:07Speaker 4: I do, and that maybe I'm wrong. You know, maybe
- 55:10Speaker 4: the reason that these relationships, these you know, relationships with
- 55:15Speaker 4: my family, you know, jobs, things like that, maybe there's
- 55:18Speaker 4: a reason that I can't do this. And you know,
- 55:22Speaker 4: it's part of me that immediately wants to be mad
- 55:24Speaker 4: at the whole structure of life in society. Is it
- 55:28Speaker 4: doesn't align with you know, mile upbringing and the things
- 55:32Speaker 4: that I went through, and people just don't understand how
- 55:35Speaker 4: bad I've had it, and you know what, they never
- 55:36Speaker 4: really will actually, and so it's it's like I had
- 55:40Speaker 4: to get to a place where I was like, I'm
- 55:41Speaker 4: not gonna treat myself like shit anymore, you know what
- 55:44Speaker 4: I mean. It's like I wouldn't let other people treat
- 55:48Speaker 4: me like that. I immediately flip out when someone you know,
- 55:51Speaker 4: tries to treat me the way and then the way
- 55:53Speaker 4: I treat myself. It's just like wow, you know. And
- 55:57Speaker 4: those are moments that are hard to with, you know,
- 56:01Speaker 4: like emotionally, they're they're hard because you realize you have
- 56:07Speaker 4: really messed things up for where you want to be
- 56:11Speaker 4: and where you are so far off that it's going
- 56:15Speaker 4: to take a miracle to get you back on track.
- 56:17Speaker 4: You feel that way. But life is good and that
- 56:21Speaker 4: it is forgiving, and you know time can heal things,
- 56:25Speaker 4: you know, and and you just kind of keep trying
- 56:28Speaker 4: to do a little bit more right for yourself, good
- 56:32Speaker 4: for yourself every day and you realize, again, okay, I'm
- 56:37Speaker 4: right back where I should be. I like myself and
- 56:41Speaker 4: the things that I had become insecure about those maybe
- 56:46Speaker 4: are the best things about me as far as I'm concerned.
- 56:49Speaker 1: You know, when did you get serious about music?
- 56:56Speaker 4: I've always been serious about it. That's that's what I
- 56:58Speaker 4: meant earlier when I there's videos of me and my
- 57:03Speaker 4: dad is putting a T shirt on me, and I said, no, sir,
- 57:07Speaker 4: I'm not wearing no T shirt. And I put on
- 57:09Speaker 4: the stress shirt and you see me tuck it in,
- 57:11Speaker 4: and it was like I was like four years old,
- 57:13Speaker 4: and it was like I was very serious about I'd
- 57:17Speaker 4: make my whole family sit there and listen to me,
- 57:19Speaker 4: and there's videos of me just singing. That's just what
- 57:21Speaker 4: I wanted to do. I always took it seriously, and
- 57:24Speaker 4: I knew when I left high school, i'd already been
- 57:28Speaker 4: telling people that I was signed to a major record label.
- 57:31Speaker 4: And when I left high school, I went to New York,
- 57:34Speaker 4: and I actually before.
- 57:36Speaker 1: Long, well, you were telling people that you were.
- 57:38Speaker 4: Yeah, I was telling people that when I got out
- 57:40Speaker 4: of school, i'd be going up there because I already
- 57:42Speaker 4: had a record deal lined up. And I actually kind
- 57:45Speaker 4: of like you were talking about, like positive thinking and
- 57:48Speaker 4: positive putting out there in the world. I did that
- 57:51Speaker 4: because before you know it, Atlantic Records was offering me
- 57:54Speaker 4: a deal Rounder Records. I got plown to meet Rick Rubin.
- 57:58Speaker 4: You know, I turned it all down, stayed with this
- 58:02Speaker 4: little lab. I turned down a deal with Rick Rubin.
- 58:07Speaker 4: Let me straighten that out. I turned down a deal
- 58:08Speaker 4: with Atlantic and with Rounder because I had gotten on
- 58:15Speaker 4: this label. They had assured me that there was money.
- 58:18Speaker 4: I'd talked to their backer all these things, and then
- 58:21Speaker 4: everything fell through right after that, and it just sent
- 58:24Speaker 4: me into a whirlwind of just being pissed off and
- 58:29Speaker 4: emotional depression, and like I just I couldn't trust anyone anymore.
- 58:34Speaker 4: It all fell through. This guy was there, him and
- 58:37Speaker 4: his brother, and they had the money. We were like
- 58:40Speaker 4: a family, We were building a relationship. We were going
- 58:43Speaker 4: to actually say no to a deal that really wasn't
- 58:46Speaker 4: good for me because it was when the industry was
- 58:49Speaker 4: coming out with three sixty deals, which meant they got
- 58:52Speaker 4: part of your merch they got part of all these
- 58:55Speaker 4: things they didn't have any business having. And so this
- 58:59Speaker 4: was a deal for me. It felt right to stay
- 59:02Speaker 4: where I was, you know. But it just his brother
- 59:09Speaker 4: pulled all the funding and the money for it, and
- 59:11Speaker 4: it just there was no I didn't know how to
- 59:14Speaker 4: raise money at the time. That's not even where my
- 59:16Speaker 4: head was, you know. I thought raising money was something
- 59:19Speaker 4: that some other people did that I didn't get lucky
- 59:21Speaker 4: enough to be that kind of person. I didn't realize,
- 59:24Speaker 4: you know, I didn't use media and stuff like that
- 59:27Speaker 4: very well, and so I couldn't do it. Now there's
- 59:30Speaker 4: you know, a chance for me to to be able
- 59:33Speaker 4: to raise money. Nowadays you can, you can do that,
- 59:37Speaker 4: you know. And that's that's where I'm getting to a
- 59:39Speaker 4: place in my life where I need to put out
- 59:41Speaker 4: records and it's hard for me to work with other
- 59:43Speaker 4: people because they always want to trying to change something
- 59:46Speaker 4: because my voice is different, unique, and that's that's it.
- 59:50Speaker 4: That's fine, and why why mess around with that, you know?
- 59:52Speaker 1: And they want you to sing different?
- 59:54Speaker 4: Well, sometimes yeah, people do. They they do, and I won't.
- 59:58Speaker 4: I'm not going to, you know. It's just that would
- 1:00:01Speaker 4: feel not wouldn't feel right to me to do that.
- 1:00:04Speaker 1: So are you is that an ace card on your shoulder?
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: You a gambler?
- 1:00:09Speaker 4: Well, not a very good one. But I met a
- 1:00:14Speaker 4: guy in San Francisco when I was out there living
- 1:00:17Speaker 4: with my sister and he was a homeless guy. Man,
- 1:00:21Speaker 4: I've just gotten a bunch of money for some songs
- 1:00:23Speaker 4: that Marlborough was using. And I said, I want to.
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: Hear about the tattoo. Explain that to me.
- 1:00:30Speaker 4: Marlborough was doing some some songs online. They had this
- 1:00:34Speaker 4: thing going.
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: The cigarette place.
- 1:00:36Speaker 3: Yeah, Steve, this is when he was responding to licensing music. Yeah, okay,
- 1:00:42Speaker 3: different and so they give me a great meat eater
- 1:00:50Speaker 3: Marlborough mix up. Yeah.
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: Yeah, so they've wont some of your songs with your voice?
- 1:00:57Speaker 4: They did, Yeah, they did. They didn't need to ask
- 1:00:59Speaker 4: me to sing different they want.
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: And they were using in cigarette ads.
- 1:01:03Speaker 4: No, sure, I would never do that. They were They
- 1:01:07Speaker 4: were used in an actual campaign to get people to
- 1:01:12Speaker 4: quit smoking. No, I'm just kidding. They were used on
- 1:01:16Speaker 4: their website. They were just kind of promoting some bands
- 1:01:18Speaker 4: in the towns they were from. It was just the
- 1:01:20Speaker 4: thing they were doing that was kind of like the
- 1:01:22Speaker 4: remember the Marlborough miles, remember that up and then.
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: Go and get remember like remember camel box. Yeah, we
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: had those white sweats said camel down side of them
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: from small ter Terrible.
- 1:01:35Speaker 7: They were yellow though, with some sweats.
- 1:01:41Speaker 4: Or a bag it's like you got your dad's backpack
- 1:01:44Speaker 4: that he ordered from Marlborough. Miles going to poke holes
- 1:01:48Speaker 4: in it so it's see through, you know. But yeah,
- 1:01:53Speaker 4: that's that's that.
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: No, just real quick. I don't mean to prive, but
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: was that like a good chunk of change from Marlborough?
- 1:01:59Speaker 4: Uh? I don't know. Is it two hundred thousand? No,
- 1:02:01Speaker 4: I'm just kidding. You know, it was like twenty grand.
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: So you're sayways, you run into a homeless guy.
- 1:02:07Speaker 4: Yeah, he was like I always wanted to get an
- 1:02:10Speaker 4: ace up my sleeve, and I was like, I was like,
- 1:02:12Speaker 4: let's go get that tattooed. And so we did. We
- 1:02:14Speaker 4: went and got it, and uh, he got one and
- 1:02:16Speaker 4: I got one, and he got his on his face.
- 1:02:21Speaker 14: Sleep.
- 1:02:22Speaker 4: I'm not sure it was right above his eye, kind
- 1:02:27Speaker 4: of like you know, Mike Tyson or something like that.
- 1:02:29Speaker 4: That's when he got a spade on his face. Yeah.
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: See, yours is even a little honey ace up my sleeve.
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: I think it's right here right in my forum.
- 1:02:39Speaker 3: He's a short sleeve game.
- 1:02:40Speaker 4: Obviously I would have been just as bad as him,
- 1:02:46Speaker 4: and I got it up there.
- 1:02:47Speaker 2: Probably got on his face.
- 1:02:49Speaker 4: Yeah, he got it on his face.
- 1:02:52Speaker 3: That's not how I expected this story to go.
- 1:02:55Speaker 4: I didn't expect a lot of things that that guy
- 1:02:57Speaker 4: was pretty wild.
- 1:02:58Speaker 3: He was. He was the who did the tattoo. And
- 1:03:01Speaker 3: when you first started the story, Oh no, then you
- 1:03:03Speaker 3: treated him to a tattoo.
- 1:03:05Speaker 4: Yeah, that's yeah, and he yeah, at the last minute
- 1:03:07Speaker 4: he went to get it on his face and I
- 1:03:10Speaker 4: almost said, hey, you know, that's not up your sleep.
- 1:03:13Speaker 1: And when we got outside, he was, that's up your eye. Yes,
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: What the hell was Krin saying about you hiking a
- 1:03:21Speaker 1: bunch of peaks in Colorado's that your Yeah?
- 1:03:24Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, I didn't make that up. When I was younger,
- 1:03:29Speaker 4: I went to a church in North Rock, Arkansas. UH
- 1:03:33Speaker 4: and the pastor there was an outdoorsman, avid outdoorsman, so
- 1:03:39Speaker 4: we uh we would do he had he was on
- 1:03:41Speaker 4: a mission to do every fourteen thousand footer uh or
- 1:03:46Speaker 4: twelve twelve thousand. He was on a mission to every
- 1:03:49Speaker 4: twelve thousand footer and uh so summers we would uh
- 1:03:53Speaker 4: go on some of those with him. I guess he
- 1:03:55Speaker 4: wasn't going to stop for running the youth group, uh
- 1:03:58Speaker 4: and he just decided to make his mission our mission.
- 1:04:01Speaker 4: So we I was actually telling a story to Charlotte
- 1:04:05Speaker 4: yesterday as we're at the hotel downtown that y'all put
- 1:04:10Speaker 4: us up pins place. It's the Armory, you like, Yeah, yeah, dude, actually,
- 1:04:16Speaker 4: uh they've rented me uh out and not rented. It's
- 1:04:21Speaker 4: free but a Gibson. And they told me actually that
- 1:04:25Speaker 4: I could bring it over here and play it, but
- 1:04:26Speaker 4: I brought the next time.
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: You want to play a Gibson, buddy, Yeah, sounds like
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: you gotta get yourself down to the get a room
- 1:04:33Speaker 1: at the Armory.
- 1:04:33Speaker 3: I've been to the Army and they never offered me
- 1:04:35Speaker 3: no gibs.
- 1:04:39Speaker 4: You can get any kind that's in the case. You
- 1:04:42Speaker 4: know in front of the hall they play music. Those
- 1:04:45Speaker 4: four Gibsons in the case. You can rent any one
- 1:04:48Speaker 4: of those.
- 1:04:49Speaker 8: Well, if anyone's at the Army that's listening, you just
- 1:04:51Speaker 8: bring Chili a guitar.
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: Put you ask you bout climbing all those fourteen.
- 1:04:58Speaker 3: Yeah, okay, So you were Charlotte a story, Oh, Charlotte story.
- 1:05:02Speaker 4: I was telling. Okay, I was telling Charlotte a story.
- 1:05:04Speaker 4: But we were looking out the window of the Armory
- 1:05:06Speaker 4: and I said, you see those big patches of ice
- 1:05:09Speaker 4: that are up on the mountain, you know, I said.
- 1:05:12Speaker 4: We rode one of those on a tarp with about
- 1:05:15Speaker 4: seven people from youth group, and someone had a little
- 1:05:19Speaker 4: poodle and they threw their dog in the air when
- 1:05:22Speaker 4: they said abandoned, like because we were going to run
- 1:05:25Speaker 4: into some rocks. I mean, we were fine, dude, and
- 1:05:29Speaker 4: we were going to run into some rocks. And he
- 1:05:31Speaker 4: just when he said abandoned, they just threw his poodle
- 1:05:34Speaker 4: band and I was like, I just, you know, roll over,
- 1:05:41Speaker 4: and I flipped and what stopped me was my face
- 1:05:44Speaker 4: hitting the eyes so hard that it just finally flipped
- 1:05:47Speaker 4: me over and I slid down. And then the guy,
- 1:05:49Speaker 4: our preacher was like all right, sitting down.
- 1:05:51Speaker 7: The other group.
- 1:05:54Speaker 4: We were just like what the poodle did not like
- 1:05:59Speaker 4: the rest of the trip with that poodle was definitely scarred.
- 1:06:03Speaker 4: And I don't think it walked on its own again
- 1:06:07Speaker 4: after that. I think it had like a little will
- 1:06:09Speaker 4: thing it just gave us. It was not hiking though,
- 1:06:14Speaker 4: and two people were like my ankle For like almost
- 1:06:18Speaker 4: another week, several of us had to trade off carrying
- 1:06:22Speaker 4: two full packs. Two packs up a mountain. We've been
- 1:06:27Speaker 4: just trading that back and forth. It was like your
- 1:06:29Speaker 4: ankle hurts so bad that you can't carry your bag
- 1:06:32Speaker 4: at all for the week, the whole weeks, exactly, exactly, No,
- 1:06:46Speaker 4: I mean, you know, I'm glad we got to help him,
- 1:06:49Speaker 4: you know, with his mission to climb all those I
- 1:06:54Speaker 4: had no idea I wanted to do that so badly
- 1:06:56Speaker 4: when you were.
- 1:06:56Speaker 1: Spending that time. So at that time, had you been
- 1:06:59Speaker 1: had you already been exposed to drugs and alcohol?
- 1:07:05Speaker 4: I had?
- 1:07:06Speaker 12: Uh?
- 1:07:06Speaker 4: Yeah, I had.
- 1:07:07Speaker 1: Well did you when you were like up in the
- 1:07:10Speaker 1: hanging around on the mountains, okay, hiking the mountains, did
- 1:07:13Speaker 1: you ever feel like did you ever get this feeling
- 1:07:15Speaker 1: that there's these different paths you could take in life?
- 1:07:17Speaker 1: And one hand would be that you kind of run
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: around the mountains and be all healthy and you know, free, right,
- 1:07:25Speaker 1: or on the other hand, you go down this path
- 1:07:27Speaker 1: of like being a musician and boozing all the time.
- 1:07:32Speaker 1: I mean, did you feel like you had that there
- 1:07:34Speaker 1: was a way to go in different directions?
- 1:07:36Speaker 4: You know, I will say this, I did not feel
- 1:07:39Speaker 4: torn ever that I wasn't being true to myself. I
- 1:07:43Speaker 4: just felt like my value for myself was not very high.
- 1:07:48Speaker 4: So so there.
- 1:07:49Speaker 1: Was that change that changed your decision making processes, yes.
- 1:07:52Speaker 4: And and and and and therefore now they're changed. I
- 1:07:55Speaker 4: will say this, though, don't let anyone fool you. As
- 1:07:58Speaker 4: you get older. Everyone at this table seems to know this,
- 1:08:01Speaker 4: besides Charlotte. As you get older, you will definitely be
- 1:08:07Speaker 4: at a place where, though you wish you would have
- 1:08:10Speaker 4: asked yourself those questions, you wished you would be in
- 1:08:15Speaker 4: a more healthy spot where you did care about yourself
- 1:08:18Speaker 4: more and could that your value for yourself was higher.
- 1:08:22Speaker 4: But for me, it wasn't very high. And I always
- 1:08:27Speaker 4: thought that was for someone else. You know that I
- 1:08:30Speaker 4: wasn't good enough for that. And yeah, I mean that
- 1:08:33Speaker 4: really has to change. And you know, there's a lot
- 1:08:35Speaker 4: of people out there that have a real hard time
- 1:08:37Speaker 4: making that sort of change on their own, and they
- 1:08:40Speaker 4: do need people to care for them and love them.
- 1:08:42Speaker 4: And I mean, to be honest with you, not to
- 1:08:45Speaker 4: be too sappy, but you know, meeting Charlotte's like changed
- 1:08:48Speaker 4: everything for me because after feeling so just like I
- 1:08:54Speaker 4: messed everything up so bad, to have someone really good
- 1:08:58Speaker 4: and positive in your life that cares about you, it
- 1:09:01Speaker 4: can be the most important thing. So you can't give
- 1:09:05Speaker 4: up on people you know.
- 1:09:08Speaker 1: How'd you guys meet.
- 1:09:10Speaker 4: We met playing in a band together. We play in
- 1:09:14Speaker 4: this band called the gravel Yard and it's a bluegrass band.
- 1:09:19Speaker 4: And Charlotte actually is has her masters in chamber music
- 1:09:26Speaker 4: and uh what yeah, she's she's a she's special.
- 1:09:30Speaker 1: Yeah, Charlotte, Ita tell you something terrible. That's my least
- 1:09:35Speaker 1: favorite kind of music, chamber music because you know that
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: show on remember that show of performance today on NPR.
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: Oh Man, Like, if you listen to the news and
- 1:09:44Speaker 1: also their likes time for performance today, I always be like, dude,
- 1:09:49Speaker 1: I'm not ready listening to the news and everything, and
- 1:09:54Speaker 1: then cut into chamber music at ten am, and I'd
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: be working away and I'd be liked damn it, and
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: I started to take it out on chamber music. Well,
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: let's do my master's degree.
- 1:10:08Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:10:09Speaker 15: I went to the University of Michigan and an Arbor
- 1:10:12Speaker 15: and I got actually two masters, one in chamber music
- 1:10:15Speaker 15: and one in violin. And then I moved back. I'm
- 1:10:18Speaker 15: from Arkansas and I moved back there.
- 1:10:20Speaker 4: You're from Arkansas too, Oh shit, yeah, that makes him
- 1:10:25Speaker 4: good down there.
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: Huh?
- 1:10:31Speaker 11: Did you guys being from Arkansas do like the whole
- 1:10:35Speaker 11: like fiddle camp thing growing up or any of that stuff.
- 1:10:38Speaker 15: Oh, I did for sure.
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: Yeah, tell me about that.
- 1:10:42Speaker 4: Well.
- 1:10:42Speaker 15: I started playing violin when I was four, and then
- 1:10:45Speaker 15: a few years later I started fiddling as well. And
- 1:10:48Speaker 15: there were Yeah, there was camps and I actually taught
- 1:10:53Speaker 15: at a fiddle camp in my hometown a couple of
- 1:10:55Speaker 15: years with my teacher, Tim Trewick. And there's a you know,
- 1:11:02Speaker 15: there's Mountain View, Arkansas. There's so much up there, and
- 1:11:04Speaker 15: my grandparents lived in Calicar Rock, which was close, so
- 1:11:07Speaker 15: we would go up there and go to the The
- 1:11:10Speaker 15: people just jam on the square and there's a lot
- 1:11:15Speaker 15: of music up there.
- 1:11:16Speaker 16: Progress.
- 1:11:17Speaker 1: What were your people, mountain people going back in time?
- 1:11:21Speaker 15: I wish they were more than they were. We didn't
- 1:11:24Speaker 15: grow up. I mean I kind of wish I grew
- 1:11:26Speaker 15: up in Mountain View or something like that, but because
- 1:11:28Speaker 15: I just loved it there so much, you know, and
- 1:11:32Speaker 15: I've always loved being outdoors. And I don't know, but
- 1:11:38Speaker 15: I grew up in near Little Rock.
- 1:11:41Speaker 1: So, yeah, were you aware his music when you met him?
- 1:11:47Speaker 15: No, I hadn't. I hadn't heard of him before, but
- 1:11:52Speaker 15: I did stock him after we joined. So we met
- 1:11:55Speaker 15: when we joined. When I joined the gravel Yard. He
- 1:11:57Speaker 15: was already playing in it for a while, and I
- 1:12:00Speaker 15: was just really excited to play with a bluegrass band.
- 1:12:04Speaker 15: And but then yeah, I went and stocked him and
- 1:12:07Speaker 15: saw all his old music. I was like, Wow, he
- 1:12:11Speaker 15: has a really unique voice.
- 1:12:14Speaker 1: Unique.
- 1:12:15Speaker 15: Yeah.
- 1:12:17Speaker 1: You don't listen anyway that tries to make you sing different.
- 1:12:19Speaker 4: Man, Oh I don't. I just feel sorry for him.
- 1:12:25Speaker 10: I can emphasize because people have been telling me to
- 1:12:27Speaker 10: sing different my whole life. Yeah, but I actually should
- 1:12:32Speaker 10: probably take that to heart.
- 1:12:33Speaker 1: I don't know what you're saying, Ran, You know, people
- 1:12:36Speaker 1: tell me to sing different.
- 1:12:39Speaker 10: Sorry, that didn't land.
- 1:12:44Speaker 4: He sings. They're saying singing a different spot.
- 1:12:47Speaker 1: Yeah, So what's what's that? You wrote all the music,
- 1:12:54Speaker 1: you wrote all your stuff before. Do you write music
- 1:12:56Speaker 1: now for the Graveyard? Are you the primary writer for Gravyard?
- 1:13:00Speaker 16: No?
- 1:13:00Speaker 4: No, no, now grave Yard. I haven't really written a
- 1:13:03Speaker 4: whole lot for them. That's uh, that's not really the
- 1:13:06Speaker 4: path I'm going down. I'm I'm I'm I'm writing for
- 1:13:08Speaker 4: myself still. That's we do a lot of old time
- 1:13:12Speaker 4: bluegrass stuff, some stuff. I released a couple of songs
- 1:13:15Speaker 4: on an album with them called Strange Times and they
- 1:13:20Speaker 4: had a different singer actually before, so I didn't come
- 1:13:23Speaker 4: into the band until the Strange Times record. But uh,
- 1:13:26Speaker 4: this whole thing with Christopher Denny, Uh, it's just you know,
- 1:13:30Speaker 4: I've had I've had the songs for a long time.
- 1:13:32Speaker 4: It's been a long time since I've done a record,
- 1:13:34Speaker 4: and it's just a great time to uh do do
- 1:13:38Speaker 4: a record and get come up with the money, and
- 1:13:40Speaker 4: there's different avenues to do in that, and so that's
- 1:13:43Speaker 4: that's kind of where I'm at now. But yeah, I've
- 1:13:45Speaker 4: been writing my own stuff recently.
- 1:13:47Speaker 3: How many stamps do you have to sell the cut
- 1:13:48Speaker 3: a record?
- 1:13:49Speaker 4: Oh? Uh, I mean apparently I don't know what's what.
- 1:13:53Speaker 4: So this guy tells me, I don't know what's what?
- 1:13:57Speaker 4: That that one would be on blue paper and have
- 1:14:00Speaker 4: this many perforations.
- 1:14:04Speaker 1: How much of a bummer if we have you play
- 1:14:07Speaker 1: right on? Is it the super bummer that you can't
- 1:14:09Speaker 1: play one of your new tunes? Do you guys know
- 1:14:10Speaker 1: how to play your new tunes together?
- 1:14:12Speaker 7: Yeah?
- 1:14:12Speaker 4: We we we know some new tunes.
- 1:14:14Speaker 1: Can you do one? Can you do right on? And
- 1:14:16Speaker 1: then do one of your new tunes?
- 1:14:17Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 1:14:17Speaker 7: Yeah, totally Yeah, And want chilly.
- 1:14:19Speaker 1: To get your to back you up on that lick
- 1:14:21Speaker 1: that finger licking.
- 1:14:22Speaker 4: Oh yeah, absolutely, but we'll tune his guitar first, and.
- 1:14:28Speaker 1: A thing doesn't that doesn't happen.
- 1:14:32Speaker 4: Yeah, I could play one right on and then we
- 1:14:35Speaker 4: could do a tune. Yeah.
- 1:14:36Speaker 1: You be able to play fiddle, You be able play
- 1:14:38Speaker 1: fiddle on bolt these. But he's going to solo.
- 1:14:43Speaker 2: On a couple.
- 1:14:44Speaker 4: Yeah that's fine.
- 1:14:46Speaker 1: Dude, I want to do it. Oh no, let's do it.
- 1:14:48Speaker 4: Okay, let's do let's get that.
- 1:14:50Speaker 1: See this is all part of background because people people
- 1:14:53Speaker 1: didn't know what the hell to make when we started
- 1:14:55Speaker 1: using your son. People don't know what to make of it.
- 1:14:57Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:14:58Speaker 4: I read a lot of things online that were like,
- 1:15:00Speaker 4: I thought that was a girl, and I was like,
- 1:15:03Speaker 4: you know, I did too for a while.
- 1:15:11Speaker 1: Phil Ready, Oh man, you know, while he's tuning that up,
- 1:15:18Speaker 1: my kids got so my kids got pet pigeons a
- 1:15:21Speaker 1: week ago. It's amazing. They got those pigeons a week ago.
- 1:15:24Speaker 1: They could they couldn't even stand up, you know they could,
- 1:15:28Speaker 1: they couldn't ride, They couldn't move themselves. You had to
- 1:15:31Speaker 1: manually move them from one place to the other. Those
- 1:15:33Speaker 1: things not run all around the yard, and they are
- 1:15:35Speaker 1: so imprinted on people. They think every single person is
- 1:15:41Speaker 1: their mom. They followed the kids anywhere they go. Climb
- 1:15:45Speaker 1: up on your feet. Dude, it's a wild little pet.
- 1:15:49Speaker 1: I had them a long time ago, but I kind
- 1:15:51Speaker 1: of forgot about all that.
- 1:15:52Speaker 10: Is this making them reconsider the pigeon trapping business.
- 1:15:56Speaker 1: They don't view it. I don't know. They sold forty
- 1:16:00Speaker 1: five of them into like near certain death. They're able
- 1:16:03Speaker 1: to hold that stinction. And he spent He gets to
- 1:16:07Speaker 1: reading that one of his pigeons has a thing called canker. Okay,
- 1:16:11Speaker 1: it's a little sickness pigeons get. He spent. He spent
- 1:16:15Speaker 1: twenty four dollars yesterday on medicine for the pigeon. I'm like,
- 1:16:22Speaker 1: I'm not putting money in these pigeons. So he sells
- 1:16:25Speaker 1: pigeons at seventy He traded three and a half a
- 1:16:29Speaker 1: piece and then spent twenty four bucks to medicate his
- 1:16:32Speaker 1: other pigeon. I love it. It's just like in like
- 1:16:36Speaker 1: however things play out in kids' heads. So funny, man,
- 1:16:40Speaker 1: you ready.
- 1:16:41Speaker 11: Yeah, what kind of guitar you got there?
- 1:16:44Speaker 1: This is that's old ass guitar.
- 1:16:47Speaker 4: Old old craftsman. Okay, old craftsman, it's a harmony.
- 1:16:54Speaker 8: Do you want to trade?
- 1:16:56Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 1:16:56Speaker 7: Yeah, he got.
- 1:16:59Speaker 4: A J forty five.
- 1:17:03Speaker 1: I'm excited, so you canna do right? Yeah, all right,
- 1:17:06Speaker 1: And then you guys are gonna do a fiddle. You're
- 1:17:07Speaker 1: gonna do some something with fiddle accompaniment. Yeah, yeah, for sure, everybody.
- 1:17:13Speaker 1: Christopher Danny.
- 1:17:15Speaker 3: M hm.
- 1:17:23Speaker 5: H m.
- 1:17:28Speaker 4: M.
- 1:17:33Speaker 6: When we met, you thought that I was shined and
- 1:17:37Speaker 6: the fine out the time you're ran to tell your
- 1:17:44Speaker 6: mother your favorite color turned black. I walked through fire
- 1:17:53Speaker 6: with my own kind of cross, tried to feel like.
- 1:17:57Speaker 4: Jesus did.
- 1:18:00Speaker 6: M hm, which is someone I can't forgive.
- 1:18:05Speaker 16: M Ride on, Ride on, little daughter.

- 1:18:36Speaker 16: done beat this damn horse today, So take a new
- 1:18:41Speaker 16: one and ride on.
- 1:18:45Speaker 9: Mm hm hm.
- 1:18:47Speaker 2: Mm hmmmmmm.
- 1:18:54Speaker 1: Oh.
- 1:18:55Speaker 6: When you said you want it up, that's when I
- 1:18:58Speaker 6: want it down. You saw nice t shades of ten
- 1:19:06Speaker 6: on us all was brown. When you found that mo

- 1:20:12Speaker 4: Be help if I help, If I learned the chords
- 1:20:14Speaker 4: to it?
- 1:20:14Speaker 1: Hell yeah, I love it, I love it.
- 1:20:19Speaker 3: Wow.
- 1:20:19Speaker 1: That's great, man. You guys. Are you guys here tonight?

- 1:20:51Speaker 4: Okay, yeah, let's do that. When you want to just uh,
- 1:20:54Speaker 4: I'm gonna. I'm gonna We're.
- 1:20:56Speaker 10: Gonna bigfoots Real is very on brand for us, Big Bigfoot?
- 1:21:01Speaker 1: Can you do? Can you do? He's not real?
- 1:21:04Speaker 4: This is r E E L.
- 1:21:07Speaker 16: It's a type of.
- 1:21:12Speaker 1: Like a Virginia.
- 1:21:12Speaker 4: You're gonna play here over here?

- 1:21:31Speaker 2: Son mm hmm.
- 1:21:37Speaker 4: Yeah, well let's just let's just do me then you
- 1:21:41Speaker 4: and then just do the so part and do it out.
- 1:21:43Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:21:47Speaker 3: Thanks, that's a good point.
- 1:21:56Speaker 5: I love it already.
- 1:22:07Speaker 4: Well this is this is instrumental, but if you want
- 1:22:11Speaker 4: me to do one with singing, I can.
- 1:22:12Speaker 7: No dudever hell you want?
- 1:22:20Speaker 1: Oh you want Charlotte on that Mica genuine master's degree
- 1:22:25Speaker 1: in fiddle plane.

- 1:22:33Speaker 4: All right, whenever you all are ready.
- 1:22:36Speaker 12: Mh I'm ready when you guys are ready.
- 1:24:37Speaker 1: Thanks, man, that was great.
- 1:24:38Speaker 4: Thanks, thanks for letting us do that after this.
- 1:24:42Speaker 11: Would you guys want to jam to? Do you guys
- 1:24:44Speaker 11: know whiskey before breakfast? I just tried to learn that one.
- 1:24:47Speaker 4: Yeah there out.
- 1:24:50Speaker 3: In the front.
- 1:24:50Speaker 11: Ye see if I can do it?
- 1:24:52Speaker 1: Yeah, great, dude, thanks for coming out. Man.
- 1:24:55Speaker 4: Yes, I'm really glad to be here and uh uh
- 1:24:58Speaker 4: uh just thank y'all.
- 1:25:01Speaker 1: I want you to make more albums. Oh yeah, yeah,
- 1:25:04Speaker 1: it's all about that.
- 1:25:06Speaker 4: So it's so awesome. So I we freaked out and
- 1:25:12Speaker 4: we were like, we've got to get this thing done
- 1:25:14Speaker 4: because I had been taken so long to do this kickstarter,
- 1:25:19Speaker 4: and so we we weren't sure. I had just assumed
- 1:25:22Speaker 4: in my mind that we were shooting live today, and
- 1:25:24Speaker 4: so we like went crazy getting this thing finished. And
- 1:25:29Speaker 4: then find out I finally asked I finally actually asked
- 1:25:33Speaker 4: Green when we were when this was going out. She said, oh,
- 1:25:36Speaker 4: like a month or so.
- 1:25:37Speaker 1: And I was like, oh my gosh, man, well, yeah,
- 1:25:39Speaker 1: I got a bunch of Yeah, I got a bunch
- 1:25:42Speaker 1: of travels, so we got it's totally fine.
- 1:25:44Speaker 4: But I just you should have been in our household
- 1:25:47Speaker 4: two weeks ago. My hair was falling out.
- 1:25:50Speaker 5: You know.
- 1:25:50Speaker 4: Charlotte's like, I don't know if I'm leaving him or not.
- 1:25:55Speaker 4: So it's just, uh it's so we're so I'm raising
- 1:25:59Speaker 4: money to do record. Uh yeah, I'm in a place
- 1:26:03Speaker 4: now where I've got Charlotte's gonna help me. Uh. I've
- 1:26:08Speaker 4: I've redone my business and I'm starting it uh fresh
- 1:26:12Speaker 4: with her helping me. Uh to just she's just like
- 1:26:17Speaker 4: I said, she's just my partner and keeps me in check.
- 1:26:20Speaker 4: And so we're gonna try to put out this third record.
- 1:26:23Speaker 4: You know, I've really I've been down through there with
- 1:26:25Speaker 4: record labels. My brother, Drew Denny is his name. He
- 1:26:30Speaker 4: actually heard my song on y'all show because he's an
- 1:26:33Speaker 4: avid fan, avid listener, a big fan of So he
- 1:26:38Speaker 4: calls me and he says, hey, your song is playing
- 1:26:41Speaker 4: at the end of this podcast that I love. And
- 1:26:44Speaker 4: I said, well, uh, that's news to.
- 1:26:48Speaker 7: Me, so uh, paperwork.
- 1:26:54Speaker 4: I've already seen it. I'm just kidding, no, but I
- 1:27:00Speaker 4: think here's something that does happen when you let go
- 1:27:05Speaker 4: of things in your world and you are succumbed to addiction.
- 1:27:10Speaker 4: You lose track of taking care of the things you
- 1:27:13Speaker 4: need to take care of, and people take advantage of you.
- 1:27:17Speaker 4: And they do that because you leave yourself wide open
- 1:27:19Speaker 4: to it. And I haven't received any kind of accounting
- 1:27:24Speaker 4: or anything on my second record for anything. And this
- 1:27:27Speaker 4: is not the only thing that I've heard about, you know,
- 1:27:31Speaker 4: not to mention, not a dime from any Spotify songs anything.
- 1:27:35Speaker 4: I have not seen a dime from that record since
- 1:27:37Speaker 4: it came out. So it's not y'all, it's it's partly
- 1:27:41Speaker 4: me and it's partly the business. It's not made up
- 1:27:45Speaker 4: of honest people. I'm not calling them liars, but they're
- 1:27:47Speaker 4: not going to come out and do the right thing
- 1:27:49Speaker 4: by you, just for no good reason, you know what
- 1:27:51Speaker 4: I mean. And so I'm doing a Kickstarter to be
- 1:27:54Speaker 4: able to do this record and have some say in
- 1:27:57Speaker 4: my career, in my life. I believe that that it's
- 1:28:01Speaker 4: gonna happen. You know. It's Uh, the album is called
- 1:28:05Speaker 4: Blue Jeans g E. N E S. Blue Jeans got
- 1:28:09Speaker 4: It And that's gonna be the name for the kickstarter campaign.
- 1:28:14Speaker 1: Well, I'm gonna kick in on the Kickstarter.
- 1:28:15Speaker 4: Oh well, thank.
- 1:28:16Speaker 3: You, we can help kick off the Kickstarter.
- 1:28:19Speaker 4: Well we we do appreciate that because uh, we're you know,
- 1:28:23Speaker 4: and there's some some great things giving back to on there.
- 1:28:28Speaker 4: So you know, it's not gonna be something that you
- 1:28:30Speaker 4: just give money, and you know you'll be a part
- 1:28:33Speaker 4: of making something happen that needed to happen for a
- 1:28:36Speaker 4: long time. And it's gonna be my best record I've got.
- 1:28:41Speaker 12: Uh.
- 1:28:44Speaker 4: I can't remember Chad's last name, but he's the guy
- 1:28:46Speaker 4: I worked with in Norman, Oklahoma at Black Watch Studios.
- 1:28:50Speaker 4: He's gonna he's the guy I wanted to record it, y'all.
- 1:28:52Speaker 4: When I went and recorded with him a few years ago,
- 1:28:55Speaker 4: I thought to myself. This is about ten years ago.
- 1:28:57Speaker 4: This guy is going to do big things and he's
- 1:28:59Speaker 4: he's worked on like Kelly Clarkson albums. They fly them
- 1:29:02Speaker 4: out to to mix. You know, he's just great. He's talented,
- 1:29:06Speaker 4: and he's going to take on recording this and producing
- 1:29:09Speaker 4: it if we come up with the money to do it, And.
- 1:29:13Speaker 1: Well, how much money does it take to do something
- 1:29:15Speaker 1: like that.
- 1:29:15Speaker 4: We're I think we're asking for like twenty five because
- 1:29:18Speaker 4: we're I need I need money to run a press
- 1:29:22Speaker 4: campaign for several months. That's important to me.
- 1:29:25Speaker 1: So well, man, I'm glad you. I'm glad you sobered up.
- 1:29:30Speaker 4: Thank you.
- 1:29:30Speaker 1: I don't mind a little bit drinking, but I'm glad
- 1:29:32Speaker 1: you're not drinking. Drinking. Well, he probably shuld stay away
- 1:29:34Speaker 1: from any kind of drinking.
- 1:29:35Speaker 16: I do. I do.
- 1:29:37Speaker 4: JT knows that I don't need to drink, so he
- 1:29:41Speaker 4: can he can tell you that.
- 1:29:43Speaker 1: Well, dude, thanks so much for coming on.
- 1:29:45Speaker 4: Man.
- 1:29:45Speaker 1: That means the world to me that you came out.
- 1:29:47Speaker 1: I appreciate it a lot. Get to know you, love
- 1:29:50Speaker 1: your love your music. I can't wait for you to
- 1:29:52Speaker 1: make more. I'm glad you got cleaned up and didn't
- 1:29:55Speaker 1: kill yourself.
- 1:29:55Speaker 4: Yeah me too, all right, dude, thanks man, Thanks.
- 1:29:58Speaker 1: All right, So how do they find the starter? One
- 1:30:00Speaker 1: last time? How do you find a kickstarter?
- 1:30:02Speaker 4: It's it's under it's gonna be Christopher Denny Blue, your
- 1:30:05Speaker 4: last name d E n n y and it's a
- 1:30:09Speaker 4: blue Jeans g E n E s like the genes
- 1:30:13Speaker 4: you're born with and I was born with blue ones.
- 1:30:17Speaker 4: And uh so it's gonna be the Blue Jeans album
- 1:30:21Speaker 4: Christopher Denny a Kickstarter and then uh that yeah, that's it.
- 1:30:24Speaker 4: That's damn man.
- 1:30:26Speaker 1: I'm glad for you. Thanks dude.
- 1:30:28Speaker 4: Oh yeah, also Christopher Denny's music page on Facebook, and
- 1:30:33Speaker 4: then uh there's links there to Instagram and all that.
- 1:30:38Speaker 4: So yeah, I'm sorry that I don't have the Instagram.
- 1:30:41Speaker 4: But okay, thank you, thank you so much. I appreciate that.
- 1:30:44Speaker 1: All right, keep it up, all right, thank you very much.
- 1:30:46Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 1:31:02Speaker 14: On a seal gray shine like silver in the sun,
- 1:31:12Speaker 14: ride ride, ride on along, sweetheart.
- 1:31:21Speaker 9: We're done beat this damp horse to death, taking a
- 1:31:26Speaker 9: new one and ride away. We're done beat this damn
- 1:31:33Speaker 9: horse today, so take a new one and ride on
