- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's the start of a new week.
- 0:15It's Monday, it's the 30th of September, and you have tapped
- 0:19me on the shoulder and said, Sean, come, let's read a chapter
- 0:22of God's word together. And I say great plan, let us do
- 0:26that. Let's go all the way back in
- 0:29time. Hi to the nation of Israel.
- 0:32They have disobeyed God. They have been dragged across
- 0:35the plains to Babylon where they have languished for many years.
- 0:40And now finally, they return to their land and they are all
- 0:44about rebuilding God's temple. They're getting things back to
- 0:48the way they ought to be. And they are facing a little bit
- 0:52of opposition. And that's what we'll hear about
- 0:54today. How do they deal with the
- 0:56opposition? Will they remember to include
- 0:58God in their plans? Will they just give up?
- 1:00Oh, have they learnt their lesson?
- 1:02Buckle your seatbelts friends, let us find out together.
- 1:05As we read together Ezra chapter 4, the enemies of Judah and
- 1:20Benjamin heard that the Exiles were rebuilding a temple to the
- 1:23Lord, the God of Israel. So they approached Cerubible and
- 1:27the other leaders and said, Let us build with you, for we
- 1:31worship your God just as you do. We have sacrificed to him ever
- 1:36since King Essahedon of Assyria brought us here.
- 1:40But Cerubabbel, Jeshua, and the other leaders of Israel replied,
- 1:44You may have no part in this work.
- 1:46We alone will build the temple for the Lord the God of Israel,
- 1:51just as King Cyrus of Persia commanded us.
- 1:55Then the local residents tried to discourage and frighten the
- 1:58people of Judah to keep them from their work.
- 2:01They bribed agents to work against them and to frustrate
- 2:04their plans. This went on during the entire
- 2:08reign of King Cyrus of Persia and lasted until King Darius of
- 2:12Persia took the throne. Years later, when Xerxes began
- 2:18his reign, the enemies of Judah wrote a letter of accusation
- 2:21against the people of Judah and Jerusalem.
- 2:25Even later, during the reign of King Artuzerxes of Persia, the
- 2:29enemies of Judah, led by Bishlam, Mithridath and Tabil
- 2:34sent a letter to Artuzerxes in the Aramaic language and it was
- 2:38translated for the king. Reham, the governor, and
- 2:42Shimshai, the court secretary, wrote the letter telling King
- 2:46Artuzerxes about the situation in Jerusalem.
- 2:49They greeted the king for all their colleagues, the judges and
- 2:52local leaders, the people of Tarpal, the Persians, the
- 2:56Babylonians and the people of Eric and Susa, that is, Elam.
- 3:02They also sent greetings from the rest of the people whom the
- 3:05great and noble Ushabanapal had deported and relocated in
- 3:09Samaria and throughout the neighbouring lands of the
- 3:12province West of the Euphrates River.
- 3:14This is the copy of their letter to King Artaxerxes from your
- 3:20loyal subjects in the province West of the Euphrates River.
- 3:24The king should know that the Jews who came here to Jerusalem
- 3:27from Babylon are rebuilding this rebellious and evil city.
- 3:32They have already laid the foundation and will soon finish
- 3:35its walls. And the King should know that if
- 3:38this city is rebuilt and its walls are completed, it will be
- 3:42much to your disadvantage, for the Jews will then refuse to pay
- 3:46their tribute, customs and tolls to you.
- 3:50Since we are your loyal subjects and do not want to see the King
- 3:54dishonoured in this way, we have sent the King this information.
- 3:58We suggest that a search be made in your ancestors records where
- 4:02you will discover what a rebellious city this has been in
- 4:05the past. In fact, it was destroyed
- 4:08because of its long and troublesome history of revolt
- 4:11against the kings and countries who controlled it.
- 4:15We declare to the king that if this city is rebuilt and its
- 4:18walls are completed, the province West of the Euphrates
- 4:22River will be lost to you. Then King Artaxerxes sent this
- 4:27reply to Rayham the governor, Shimshai the court secretary,
- 4:32and their colleagues living in Samaria and throughout the
- 4:35province West of the Euphrates River.
- 4:38Greetings, this letter you sent has been translated and read to
- 4:42me. I ordered a search of the
- 4:45records and have found that Jerusalem has indeed been a
- 4:49hotbed of insurrection against many kings.
- 4:52In fact, rebellion and revolt are normal there.
- 4:56Powerful kings have ruled over Jerusalem and the entire
- 4:59province West of the Euphrates River, receiving tribute,
- 5:03customs and tolls. Therefore issue orders to have
- 5:07these men stop their work. That city must not be rebuilt
- 5:12except at my express command. Be diligent and don't neglect
- 5:17this matter, for we must not permit the situation to harm the
- 5:21King's interests. When this letter from King
- 5:25Artaxerxes was read to Rayham Shimshai and their colleagues,
- 5:29they hurried to Jerusalem. Then, with a show of strength,
- 5:34they forced the Jews to stop building.
- 5:38So the work on the Temple of God in Jerusalem had stopped, and it
- 5:42remained at a standstill until the second year of the reign of
- 5:46King Darius of Persia. Ah, Father, You are a great big
- 6:00God, and the stretch of your hand extends beyond the horizon,
- 6:06deep into the future, and you know what's coming and your
- 6:11plans are long, big good plans. Lord, as we live our lives, help
- 6:19us rest in You, trusting that you have our future secured.
- 6:26And not just our future on this tempestuous planet we call home,
- 6:30but our eternal future that you have won.
- 6:33Through Jesus. We know that you will rebuild
- 6:37this earth and it will be perfect and it will be your home
- 6:40once again. So until that day, Lord, help us
- 6:44just stand firm in the knowledge that you rule supreme over
- 6:48everything and that you bend the arc of time to our good.
- 6:54And we are so grateful that you would do that.
- 6:58And we thank you most of all for Jesus for showing us your love,
- 7:04your compassion, and your presence here with us through
- 7:06Him. So we pray all of this in His
- 7:09saving name, Amen.
