Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: So we're back, back, back and back, and so you're
- 0:03Speaker 1: back at Necrosonic which is happening on Saturday, which I will.
- 0:08Speaker 2: Be a part of as well, will be there.
- 0:10Speaker 3: That's awesome.
- 0:10Speaker 2: Yeah. So haven't you guys played Ecosonic before previously?
- 0:14Speaker 3: No, we've played a Dead Winter back in the day.
- 0:16Speaker 2: Yeah, I was there for.
- 0:19Speaker 3: The first one probably nice the cherry.
- 0:22Speaker 2: Yeah, So what are you hoping to?
- 0:24Speaker 1: What are you looking for to you mice on the day,
- 0:26Speaker 1: what's your highlight for yourselves?
- 0:28Speaker 3: Just to be around the culture in the community. That's
- 0:31Speaker 3: big for us. We've been a major part of it
- 0:34Speaker 3: for such a long time.
- 0:36Speaker 2: Nice.
- 0:36Speaker 3: That's not with people that we've made have played a
- 0:39Speaker 3: gig too, like twenty five years ago, thirty years ago,
- 0:41Speaker 3: So it's unreal.
- 0:43Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, No, there's definitely that vibe. Absolutely. It's one
- 0:46Speaker 1: of the beautiful things that metal music does, isn't it. It
- 0:49Speaker 1: creates this sense of community and we're the nicest people
- 0:52Speaker 1: like I haven't met haven't met a not a good
- 0:54Speaker 1: one yet there. Yeah, it's really I think you know
- 0:59Speaker 1: in our well. I was having this conversation actually last
- 1:01Speaker 1: night when I was playing a gig and my own
- 1:03Speaker 1: that music just creates this a sense of the community
- 1:06Speaker 1: and that our life that we have these days we
- 1:08Speaker 1: don't have that, and that's what's liking. I think and
- 1:11Speaker 1: feel very blessed to be a part of it all,
- 1:12Speaker 1: and on both ends of the spectrum, behind the scenes
- 1:15Speaker 1: and on the stage too, which is always the best
- 1:18Speaker 1: fun you can have.
- 1:19Speaker 3: What bend you?
- 1:20Speaker 2: I played for myself, well.
- 1:22Speaker 1: Ak, but I got a bit of a session musician
- 1:24Speaker 1: here and there. I play base and I sing.
- 1:26Speaker 3: So that's what I do.
- 1:28Speaker 2: Yeah they.
- 1:30Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, well, yeah, have we winging it for a long?
- 1:33Speaker 1: I played drums very averagely as well, but singing capital
- 1:37Speaker 1: letters and get the frustration out so sweet.
- 1:40Speaker 2: Yeah it is. It's so much fun. But yeah, so
- 1:43Speaker 2: you guys have had a bit of a hiatus, is
- 1:45Speaker 2: that right?
- 1:45Speaker 3: Yeah, we sort of do that from time to time.
- 1:47Speaker 3: In Secretion went full tilt from ninety six to about
- 1:51Speaker 3: two thousand and two, and then, yeah.
- 1:53Speaker 2: The prime of my life, I'm a teenage and we
- 1:55Speaker 2: spent youth.
- 1:56Speaker 3: You know that that we hear that so often from
- 1:58Speaker 3: people and so great that we we were part of
- 2:00Speaker 3: their formative years. And then we had a little break
- 2:03Speaker 3: up until like two thousand and two to maybe twenty ten,
- 2:08Speaker 3: maybe nine, we came back. We never Dad followed it
- 2:11Speaker 3: up with Painted in Blood and a little bit of
- 2:15Speaker 3: a Breather we released in COVID. We released a single
- 2:18Speaker 3: called Blood on the sixth. But yeah, we started thinking
- 2:22Speaker 3: about what we wanted to do, and it was in
- 2:24Speaker 3: my head that the band's about to turn thirty and
- 2:26Speaker 3: I couldn't just let it just fizzle out with not
- 2:29Speaker 3: coming back. So we'll book a show or two and
- 2:33Speaker 3: we'll release the best of album and we'll just see
- 2:35Speaker 3: how it goes. Yeah, it has gone fucking off its head.
- 2:45Speaker 3: What started off as maybe a show in Sydney has
- 2:47Speaker 3: ended up with a full blown Australian tour with everything
- 2:49Speaker 3: selling out.
- 2:50Speaker 2: Oh wow, that's so awesome.
- 2:52Speaker 3: You guys must be that we've charted in the UK
- 2:55Speaker 3: with albums at are ten and fifteen years old.
- 2:58Speaker 2: Shit, that's pretty good.
- 2:59Speaker 3: We've we've charted in One of our albums is literally
- 3:04Speaker 3: like fifteen years old and we chart the iTunes National
- 3:08Speaker 3: All Genres Chart at number six.
- 3:10Speaker 2: That's so cool.
- 3:12Speaker 3: We can't believe what's happening.
- 3:14Speaker 1: Like, we don't find that old fans that are getting
- 3:16Speaker 1: on or is it you've got a whole bunch of
- 3:18Speaker 1: new ones as well, or.
- 3:19Speaker 3: What's the it's everyone, it's it's old fans, it's new fans,
- 3:23Speaker 3: it's it's just crazy, like we're overwhelmed. We're in an
- 3:28Speaker 3: extremely sort of sort of quiet, humble sort of band anyway,
- 3:32Speaker 3: but we just can't believe it.
- 3:35Speaker 2: That's really gratulations.
- 3:36Speaker 3: Yeah, thank you, but we're just so grateful because you know,
- 3:40Speaker 3: when you start to get through your later years, you know,
- 3:43Speaker 3: just being able to do it is a privilege, you know, true,
- 3:46Speaker 3: so true, And you know, I've got we've got a
- 3:50Speaker 3: great band, you know, where everyone's physically fit and everyone's
- 3:54Speaker 3: playing their absolute asses off, like everybody in my instagration
- 3:58Speaker 3: is like a grade music, like yeah, top of the tree,
- 4:02Speaker 3: unbelievable players be.
- 4:04Speaker 2: If we call it.
- 4:04Speaker 1: Yeah, And I think too, when you get to a
- 4:06Speaker 1: certain point where you don't have so much pent up
- 4:10Speaker 1: angst getting it, you just get up there zero fox
- 4:12Speaker 1: really and do you think it kind of was when
- 4:14Speaker 1: your best stuff happens?
- 4:15Speaker 3: I think, well, we've been from the response from the
- 4:18Speaker 3: crowds and from people that have seen us over the years,
- 4:21Speaker 3: we are at the best of the best that we've
- 4:23Speaker 3: ever played.
- 4:24Speaker 2: Yeah, that's so good.
- 4:26Speaker 3: We haven't come back as you know, just this legacy
- 4:28Speaker 3: act that just wants to milk a few more like
- 4:31Speaker 3: bits out of our career. We actually want to kick
- 4:34Speaker 3: the scene in the arts and body that we've still got.
- 4:38Speaker 3: We want our title back the biggest metal band in
- 4:41Speaker 3: the country at one stage, and we went out fucking title.
- 4:43Speaker 2: Back Parkway Stepiside pretty.
- 4:46Speaker 3: Much because they were a bunch of kids that opened
- 4:48Speaker 3: for us in Byron Bay. They've done so many amazing
- 4:50Speaker 3: things for ustream music and it's tongue in chips as
- 4:52Speaker 3: they were coming from, but we are. We want to
- 4:57Speaker 3: show them that we're still as hungry and as passionate
- 4:59Speaker 3: and we've been learning our craft for so long that
- 5:02Speaker 3: we're bringing the crushing hits that we've got in the
- 5:05Speaker 3: brutal groups from all long.
- 5:06Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, from the gong. It doesn't get any better.
- 5:09Speaker 1: And that's the thing too. I think that you would
- 5:11Speaker 1: have seen the change that and now more so. I
- 5:14Speaker 1: don't know your opinion, but we're not having to export
- 5:17Speaker 1: our goodness before we own it as ourselves, which you've
- 5:21Speaker 1: probably seen happen quite a lot through your time coming
- 5:24Speaker 1: through with it, especially the metal scene and the heavier stuff.
- 5:26Speaker 1: It's really refreshing to see that it's being embraced now
- 5:31Speaker 1: and you know, they're not exiting stage left before they
- 5:34Speaker 1: come back. It's the scene is quite healthier. It's nice
- 5:38Speaker 1: and see the young ones coming up through it as well.
- 5:40Speaker 1: And it's just being so inclusive and you know the
- 5:43Speaker 1: multi genres that are coming through and you're playing on
- 5:46Speaker 1: the same bill, and that's you know, I think that
- 5:49Speaker 1: kind of maybe what it means, you know, just to
- 5:51Speaker 1: be a little bit more of a broad spectrum and
- 5:53Speaker 1: embrace it all because you know, it all sounds fucking
- 5:56Speaker 1: good loud.
- 5:57Speaker 3: That's what Suggression has always been about, this divert an inclusion. Yeah,
- 6:01Speaker 3: we come as a band with the name Segregated Aggression,
- 6:04Speaker 3: and what that meant was I took all the people
- 6:06Speaker 3: that were segregated away from the mainstream and we created
- 6:09Speaker 3: a community and family around you being the victims of crime.
- 6:13Speaker 2: And that's what we do. From the fringes, you know,
- 6:15Speaker 2: and from the edges and the outside.
- 6:16Speaker 1: I remember my UNI day is studying you know, social psychology,
- 6:20Speaker 1: and that was very much a big theme of you know,
- 6:22Speaker 1: those displaced people and from the segregation and from the
- 6:27Speaker 1: fringes of society.
- 6:28Speaker 2: And you know, one analogy I always really love.
- 6:31Speaker 1: I think it's quite you know, gnally and beautiful in
- 6:33Speaker 1: the same way, is that the most fertile part of
- 6:36Speaker 1: the roadway is on the edges, because it's where the
- 6:39Speaker 1: ship gets pushed, but it's where the most growth happens.
- 6:42Speaker 1: And I think that's really quite says a lot, you know,
- 6:46Speaker 1: when you overlay that people and culture as well.
- 6:49Speaker 3: So yeah, we've first hand experience with that. Yeah, what
- 6:54Speaker 3: you're saying is the nail on the head. So true.
- 6:59Speaker 1: And I think music's one of those really awesome things
- 7:02Speaker 1: too that you know, you go through some shit in
- 7:04Speaker 1: your life and it's one thing that it keeps you
- 7:07Speaker 1: centered and it can come back to it, and it's
- 7:10Speaker 1: it's the one constant in a lot of people's life too,
- 7:12Speaker 1: you know that may have along the way lost you know, family, friends,
- 7:17Speaker 1: what have you, maybe that stability, but music's one thing
- 7:19Speaker 1: that gives them that that comfort and that network. And
- 7:23Speaker 1: I think that's and it's seeing even artists too, you know,
- 7:25Speaker 1: go off the rails and come back and music's been
- 7:28Speaker 1: that one thing coming back to what they do and
- 7:29Speaker 1: what they do well has got them through the other side,
- 7:31Speaker 1: and I just fucking love that shit.
- 7:33Speaker 2: You know, I live and respect to people who.
- 7:36Speaker 3: I live for it. I breathe it.
- 7:37Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah.
- 7:38Speaker 3: I never realized the impact that it would have was
- 7:40Speaker 3: when I was like, I've been doing sugressions a young
- 7:43Speaker 3: guy in my twenties. You know, I've been playing in
- 7:46Speaker 3: band since I was a teenager. I started playing base
- 7:48Speaker 3: when I was eleven years old.
- 7:49Speaker 2: So wow, I started not that long ago.
- 7:53Speaker 3: The thing that really shook me up was we just
- 7:57Speaker 3: turn we just turned from easy to suggression and written
- 8:01Speaker 3: because it was before all the emails and social media,
- 8:03Speaker 3: and we got handwritten letters that people used to write
- 8:06Speaker 3: to the band.
- 8:07Speaker 2: Yeah, in the fan clubs and stuff.
- 8:08Speaker 1: Yeah, Christy Cass that demos off to people.
- 8:12Speaker 3: You know, you know, the era. So yeah, we got
- 8:14Speaker 3: a letter once from a family who buried this son
- 8:17Speaker 3: in a suggression.
- 8:19Speaker 2: Oh wow, that was that.
- 8:20Speaker 3: That fucking hit me in my heart and it's so
- 8:25Speaker 3: tim play. I think of that and think of things
- 8:28Speaker 3: similar to that that's happened throughout my career and how
- 8:30Speaker 3: lucky I am that I, you know, had the gift
- 8:33Speaker 3: to give music back to people.
- 8:36Speaker 1: Yeah, it's that gratitude that you know is expressed you
- 8:39Speaker 1: know from artists and audience too, and it's and it's
- 8:41Speaker 1: so evident when you're playing live that they're as grateful
- 8:44Speaker 1: as well. You know, we might be to stand up
- 8:46Speaker 1: there and do it at times, and that's that's the ship,
- 8:49Speaker 1: you know, that's what we do it for.
- 8:50Speaker 3: I think, Yeah, well you will see Necrosnic, You'll see
- 8:53Speaker 3: a bunch of the best of the best bands.
- 8:55Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm looking forward to it.
- 8:58Speaker 3: And if you do get to catch a little bit Suggression,
- 9:00Speaker 3: oh yeah, I play. You've seen some good playing, but
- 9:03Speaker 3: what you're going to get from Suggression is the biggest
- 9:05Speaker 3: ball of energy that's just going to fucking flood the room.
- 9:09Speaker 2: And that's the best stuff everyone.
- 9:10Speaker 3: That we got we're going to throw back to the crowd.
- 9:13Speaker 1: Yeah, And I personally think that is literally the key
- 9:18Speaker 1: to a good live gig. Like I've seen some great
- 9:21Speaker 1: artists that are awesome, but they're really boring on stage
- 9:24Speaker 1: at times, and it's just like, oh, you know, I
- 9:26Speaker 1: get obviously you've got to concentrate, but when you get
- 9:29Speaker 1: you know, guys up there. When I say guys inclusive
- 9:32Speaker 1: male and female, you know, out there and do it
- 9:35Speaker 1: and just go hard and give it everything.
- 9:38Speaker 2: It doesn't matter if you don't know who they are
- 9:40Speaker 2: or whatever.
- 9:41Speaker 1: That energy is so infectious on a live gig, and
- 9:43Speaker 1: that's that's what matters.
- 9:44Speaker 2: And yeah, that's the that's the ship we look forward to.
- 9:49Speaker 3: You're going to get from Suggression because I'm telling you now,
- 9:51Speaker 3: we've been playing ninety ninety five hundred minute sets.
- 9:55Speaker 2: Yeah right, yeah, as they say your forty minute face,
- 10:02Speaker 2: that's the first.
- 10:02Speaker 1: Time I've heard that, but I like it. It's fitting.
- 10:05Speaker 1: That's awesome.
- 10:06Speaker 2: And so do you know where you guys are on
- 10:07Speaker 2: the billion of the main stage?
- 10:08Speaker 3: Yeah, we're on the stage number two. Okay, we're on
- 10:12Speaker 3: twenty to nine.
- 10:13Speaker 2: Yeah. Nice, nice, nice.
- 10:15Speaker 1: And so who are you most looking forward to seeing
- 10:17Speaker 1: yourselves on the day?
- 10:18Speaker 2: It's a massive Why.
- 10:19Speaker 3: Not the Berserker?
- 10:21Speaker 2: Yep?
- 10:21Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't want to cut anyone out man, all
- 10:23Speaker 3: of them, but I'll see what I can see. We've
- 10:26Speaker 3: got a strong connection to the dream Killers because we
- 10:28Speaker 3: would with them back in the day.
- 10:30Speaker 1: Yeah, they're I love doing his thing.
- 10:34Speaker 3: It's it's a it's a wonderful thing that they're still going. Yeah, yeah, no,
- 10:38Speaker 3: of course, Croptic Yeah, about the about the boys, they're
- 10:42Speaker 3: just incredible, Yeah, Marco Sanchez brain.
- 10:45Speaker 2: Intrusion, Yeah, yep, yep.
- 10:47Speaker 3: I'm looking forward to seeing them go them guys Grave
- 10:49Speaker 3: mind as well, yep. But really it's it's unfair for
- 10:53Speaker 3: me to yeas and not include others. So everyone, there's not.
- 10:58Speaker 2: Really much crossover, I believe, is that right? They the
- 11:01Speaker 2: way the timetable has been set out.
- 11:03Speaker 3: Yeah, it's it's it's good.
- 11:05Speaker 2: Yeah, it's awesome.
- 11:07Speaker 3: I mean I love Ken yeah, and Caroline and and everybody.
- 11:12Speaker 2: Like the love.
- 11:18Speaker 1: The love is real, it is absolutely and it's and
- 11:20Speaker 1: and this is the appreciation because there's just so much
- 11:22Speaker 1: that goes into you know, these kind of events, and
- 11:26Speaker 1: you know, when it comes to you know, it's not
- 11:28Speaker 1: even about profits and doing it. We've been doing it
- 11:31Speaker 1: for the love of it for so long now, and
- 11:34Speaker 1: and I think more and more, you know, fans really
- 11:38Speaker 1: come to that and understand, and they're willing to spend
- 11:40Speaker 1: you know, the ticket money and to go to the
- 11:42Speaker 1: live events. And I think COVID was one of those
- 11:44Speaker 1: times that really, you know, when it was taken away
- 11:46Speaker 1: from everyone, they frothing hard to get back there and
- 11:49Speaker 1: to be able to do it. So it's you know,
- 11:52Speaker 1: the organizers that put on these kind of events. It's
- 11:55Speaker 1: it's what it needs, you know, to be able to
- 11:57Speaker 1: get everyone up there and on the stage and on
- 11:59Speaker 1: the run and to do it because sometimes you know,
- 12:01Speaker 1: well you guys have had phenomenal success selling out, you know,
- 12:04Speaker 1: doing your astros and a tour. But if you're doing that,
- 12:07Speaker 1: you know, otherwise it can be ticket sales can get
- 12:10Speaker 1: a bit under the pump, and then you know, sometimes
- 12:13Speaker 1: bands are cost of money which wants to see. But
- 12:16Speaker 1: the fact that they're still out there doing it, it's
- 12:19Speaker 1: that's what it's all about.
- 12:20Speaker 3: So I give you an idea, and I don't like
- 12:22Speaker 3: to talk technical or money or anything like that. We're
- 12:27Speaker 3: totally not into that side of things. But this this
- 12:31Speaker 3: tour that we put together, we've been selling between one
- 12:34Speaker 3: and two thousand dollars worth of merch on our own,
- 12:37Speaker 3: no label, no speaking, just we're doing that every fucking show.
- 12:41Speaker 3: I can't believe it makes the shirt. So we're able
- 12:44Speaker 3: to keep up, but we'd be fuck trying to stock well.
- 12:48Speaker 1: I've always said, you know, the money these days is
- 12:50Speaker 1: you know, a live gigs and merch, and so you
- 12:52Speaker 1: guys are just smashing it. And you know it's obviously
- 12:55Speaker 1: you know, you had your you know, all the time
- 12:58Speaker 1: that you've spent is been done wisely, done well because
- 13:02Speaker 1: you know, it's resonated with the fans and they're coming
- 13:04Speaker 1: back in the masses to see you guys again, which
- 13:07Speaker 1: is so we.
- 13:08Speaker 3: Finded new and inventive ways to give it back. So
- 13:11Speaker 3: when we do Wollongong, and the thing is with the band, now,
- 13:14Speaker 3: we're not just coming back and going all right, let's
- 13:17Speaker 3: let's work with about fifth to the fifth or l
- 13:20Speaker 3: A A or smile. We're writing new songs. We've got
- 13:23Speaker 3: a song that's going to be coming out to coincide
- 13:25Speaker 3: with our because we sold out Wollongong. So wait, wait,
- 13:29Speaker 3: this is this is what suggression is all about. We
- 13:31Speaker 3: sold out Wollongong two months before the show thirty dollars
- 13:34Speaker 3: a ticket.
- 13:35Speaker 2: Yeah wow, that's so reasonable too. That's that's that's the ship. Yeah.
- 13:38Speaker 3: So what we did we said, all right, we're going
- 13:40Speaker 3: to get Jeffron Fist and Fist to come. So I'm
- 13:43Speaker 3: bringing them to Wongong.
- 13:44Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, And I'm bringing them to Wongong And that's great.
- 13:48Speaker 3: But you know, we're playing in a small Irish pub.
- 13:52Speaker 3: Yeah for free.
- 13:54Speaker 2: Oh I see, that's that's the ship.
- 13:56Speaker 3: And I'm going to give out five hundred of our
- 13:58Speaker 3: new single love It. We're going to give that away
- 14:02Speaker 3: and the bass that I'm going to play the last song.
- 14:05Speaker 3: I'm going to give that to someone in the crowd.
- 14:07Speaker 2: Oh that's awesome. When you come to the Gold Cost.
- 14:11Speaker 3: Tell them, tell them, tell them we come. We'll bring
- 14:13Speaker 3: all the toys.
- 14:14Speaker 2: Yeah, there's a few.
- 14:16Speaker 3: I'll give you the three away for good.
- 14:18Speaker 2: I don't believe you skip the cost of you too?
- 14:20Speaker 3: Well what personally, I'll be honest with you. When Kent
- 14:25Speaker 3: was so gracious to give us a slot on Necrosonic
- 14:28Speaker 3: in my word handshake via the internet, yeah, we will
- 14:32Speaker 3: not play another show in Queensland in this year, just Necrosonic.
- 14:37Speaker 1: Yeah wow yeah, yes, I get everyone there. Yeah that's fair.
- 14:40Speaker 3: So we got offered. Now, so we got off with
- 14:42Speaker 3: the Gold Coast. We got offered by them. We got
- 14:43Speaker 3: offered coughs no to all of them because I gave
- 14:46Speaker 3: Kent my word gentleman handshake that Necrosonic is our is
- 14:50Speaker 3: our show.
- 14:51Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 14:51Speaker 1: Nice nice, that's that's that's a fair deal, and that's
- 14:54Speaker 1: a gentleman's deal, and that's you and to do the
- 14:57Speaker 1: right thing and honor that.
- 14:58Speaker 2: You know, we're happily waite. But no.
- 15:02Speaker 1: Kea Keene asked to see obviously, don't you know come
- 15:04Speaker 1: this coming Saturday. It's that that's such a massive day,
