- 0:00Speaker 1: Peyton high locked. The producer is also here. Good morning, Peyton,
- 0:03Speaker 1: Good morning Jean. He is like full blown soccer today.
- 0:06Speaker 1: He's wearing a soccer jersey and it says Mexico, you
- 0:09Speaker 1: are ready for the World Cup.
- 0:10Speaker 2: Yes, I am right, all right, all right, and we're
- 0:13Speaker 2: ready for the College World Series too. But today we.
- 0:15Speaker 1: Really want to hear from you. We want to get
- 0:17Speaker 1: your feedback. We want to hear your comments, concerns, questions, complaints,
- 0:22Speaker 1: anything goes with US, city, State, National, the World, the streetcar,
- 0:26Speaker 1: the College World Series, potholes.
- 0:28Speaker 2: Whatever, We will talk about it.
- 0:31Speaker 1: And we're going to have some great guests next week too,
- 0:34Speaker 1: and of course you're going to hear plenty of opinions
- 0:37Speaker 1: from old Jean Stothard here. So but it is your
- 0:40Speaker 1: chance to speak up and sound off. You can send
- 0:42Speaker 1: your emails to comment at kfab dot com, or you
- 0:46Speaker 1: can call us at four two five five eight eleven ten.
- 0:50Speaker 2: We are happy that you are with us.
- 0:52Speaker 3: Boy.
- 0:52Speaker 1: We had some storms last night, as you know, Peyton,
- 0:55Speaker 1: I always come in here armed with every newspaper I
- 0:59Speaker 1: can find. Wall Street Journal is hanging over a chair
- 1:02Speaker 1: here drying out. So is the World Herald sitting in
- 1:05Speaker 1: front of me. But you know what I have to mention.
- 1:08Speaker 1: Opening ceremonies are tonight for the College World Series. They're
- 1:12Speaker 1: down at the Zoo. They did that last year too,
- 1:16Speaker 1: when we had Jack Deezing on a week or so ago,
- 1:18Speaker 1: I said, I really missed that opening ceremony. That they
- 1:22Speaker 1: had a big barbecue at the stadium at Creighton and
- 1:26Speaker 1: then they did a parade down the street and into
- 1:29Speaker 1: the stadium and all of the teams got introduced and
- 1:32Speaker 1: there were fireworks, and there were paratroopers and they were
- 1:35Speaker 1: all of this. And I walked in that parayed every
- 1:39Speaker 1: time that they had it with Jack deezeing in the
- 1:41Speaker 1: front of the prede and it was so much fun. However,
- 1:45Speaker 1: so wether or so weather dependent, not independent, and I
- 1:49Speaker 1: remembered at least half of those were canceled because of
- 1:53Speaker 1: storms and weather. And as Jack Deezing and Lisa Dezing
- 1:57Speaker 1: said on here, every single year after the College World Series,
- 2:01Speaker 1: there is a huge meeting between MECCA, the College World Series,
- 2:05Speaker 1: the NCAA, and they always try to look at ways
- 2:08Speaker 1: to make it better. They like a feedback from people.
- 2:11Speaker 1: They like to hear from people, and one of the
- 2:13Speaker 1: complaints was actually from the coaches about the whole parade issue.
- 2:17Speaker 1: Because it was a late night. They usually had a
- 2:20Speaker 1: band out on the field. The players were out there
- 2:22Speaker 1: dancing around. The coaches said, you're playing baseball tomorrow, my men,
- 2:28Speaker 1: get home and get back to your hotels and get
- 2:30Speaker 1: some sleep. And so this is something that the coaches
- 2:34Speaker 1: really wanted to downplay it a little bit, not downplay it,
- 2:36Speaker 1: but not have such a big extravaganza and keeping the
- 2:39Speaker 1: players out late at night. However, on the front page
- 2:43Speaker 1: of the World Herald today is my favorite subject of
- 2:46Speaker 1: the College World Series.
- 2:48Speaker 2: The food. Ah, the food, Oh, my goodness.
- 2:52Speaker 1: You know when Okay, the last twelve years when I
- 2:56Speaker 1: was involved in the College World Series, one of my
- 2:58Speaker 1: favorites was about to maybe they're doing it today or
- 3:01Speaker 1: maybe they did it yesterday, since it's in the World Herald.
- 3:03Speaker 1: But we would go down to the stadium and they
- 3:05Speaker 1: would put out samples of all the food that they're
- 3:08Speaker 1: going to serve.
- 3:09Speaker 2: The best part we get to eat it.
- 3:11Speaker 1: However, they were talking about some of the new menu
- 3:16Speaker 1: items and one of the things on the front page
- 3:19Speaker 1: they mentioned, wait to hear this is a one pound
- 3:22Speaker 1: fried twinkie covered in chocolate. What one pound fried twinkie
- 3:28Speaker 1: covered in chocolate. Now, Levy Restaurants they you know, they
- 3:33Speaker 1: do the food for the ballpark, and they do for
- 3:36Speaker 1: Charles Schwab, and they do the food for chi Health
- 3:38Speaker 1: Center too, and of course they wanted to bring you know,
- 3:42Speaker 1: it's the burgers, the smash burgers, the hot dogs. Who
- 3:44Speaker 1: doesn't like that? But here's a new burger this year.
- 3:48Speaker 1: It's called the out of the park Burger. Listen to
- 3:53Speaker 1: this one burger, A fried chicken fritter, yes, chicken and beef,
- 3:58Speaker 1: provolone marinera pepperoni, banana, peppers and parmesan, and a sandwich.
- 4:04Speaker 1: My stomach is kind of like rumbling thinking about this.
- 4:08Speaker 2: Is this something?
- 4:10Speaker 1: All this different types of food that they are talking about.
- 4:13Speaker 1: Here's another one. Here's Steakhouse Mac and Cheese, which features
- 4:17Speaker 1: creamy housemade three cheese mac and cheese topped with steak
- 4:22Speaker 1: blue cheese, fried onions, and green onions. Okay, there's a
- 4:26Speaker 1: belly bummer right there too. And they have Nashville Hot
- 4:30Speaker 1: tenders served with crispy tater tots, house made dill ranch
- 4:35Speaker 1: and spicy pickle chips. Holy cow, what peyton? I'm gonna
- 4:39Speaker 1: put you on the spot. What's your favorite baseball park.
- 4:42Speaker 4: Fo Okay, well, I'm gonna be really basic, but every
- 4:45Speaker 4: time I go to a baseball game, I have to
- 4:47Speaker 4: get a hot dog.
- 4:47Speaker 5: That's customary.
- 4:48Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 4:50Speaker 4: Other than that, I think nachos are decent. The Nashville
- 4:56Speaker 4: comes in this, the Nashville Chicken comes in this sauce,
- 4:59Speaker 4: and I don't I really want to get my hands
- 5:00Speaker 4: all dirty like that. If I'm at a ballpark and
- 5:02Speaker 4: it has a kick to it, and it does have
- 5:04Speaker 4: a little kick to it, it's spicy, I would say
- 5:07Speaker 4: a hot dog or second string is maybe a beer
- 5:10Speaker 4: pretzel with some cheese.
- 5:12Speaker 5: Yep, that's a great option, and they.
- 5:13Speaker 1: Will always bring back the beer pretzel with cheese. Do
- 5:16Speaker 1: you know what my favorite junk food is at a ballpark?
- 5:18Speaker 1: And everybody knows this. I like cotton candy.
- 5:21Speaker 5: Oh okay, I understand I have to get Yeah, I understand.
- 5:24Speaker 1: I have to get one at least for every game.
- 5:27Speaker 1: I love cotton candy, so I have to get that.
- 5:30Speaker 1: And talk about messy.
- 5:31Speaker 4: I don't know if that's in that article that you're
- 5:33Speaker 4: reading their gene, but I watched the story on Channel
- 5:35Speaker 4: six last night. And it just said thirty one new
- 5:38Speaker 4: food items on the menu. That's a lot of new food.
- 5:42Speaker 1: I know it's good and they always try to outdo
- 5:44Speaker 1: the year before, but they do a good job with that.
- 5:48Speaker 1: I think it's great that they have new things and
- 5:50Speaker 1: different things. Sometimes I see people, you know, walking down
- 5:54Speaker 1: to their seat with their whole arms full of stuff.
- 5:57Speaker 1: On the front page, I do think that they have
- 5:59Speaker 1: the picture of the one pound fried Twinkie top ten chocolate.
- 6:05Speaker 5: I think that would be so great to try.
- 6:06Speaker 1: Oh good lord, I don't want that's really fun.
- 6:10Speaker 2: And talking about the College World Series too.
- 6:13Speaker 1: I did receive a comment from bridget on my private
- 6:18Speaker 1: email the other day, but she is questioning the parking
- 6:23Speaker 1: and she said about she finds it crazy how much
- 6:28Speaker 1: the parking cost downtown. She's talking about price scalping of parking.
- 6:36Speaker 1: Not a fan of how much it costs. She was
- 6:39Speaker 1: interested in my thoughts, and you know, I did look
- 6:43Speaker 1: into this a little bit. The parking, some of it's
- 6:47Speaker 1: determined by Mecca and some of it is determined by
- 6:51Speaker 1: the City of Omaha. But I will say the parking
- 6:56Speaker 1: garages are controlled by park Omaha, and that is the
- 7:01Speaker 1: City of Omaha. And the parking garages are thirty dollars,
- 7:05Speaker 1: but you could stay there all day for thirty dollars.
- 7:09Speaker 1: And you know, compared to parking in Chicago it's twenty
- 7:12Speaker 1: four dollars an hour in a parking garage. This is
- 7:15Speaker 1: about the second or third year, I believe. Now I'm
- 7:18Speaker 1: just saying this off the top of my head, and
- 7:20Speaker 1: I'm not certain which year it started that the park
- 7:24Speaker 1: Omaha parking garages were thirty dollars. MECCA, which is Metropolitan
- 7:29Speaker 1: Entertainment Convention Authority. They control the lots, although you know
- 7:34Speaker 1: that's all still owned by the city, and they include
- 7:37Speaker 1: the garages that are are with the parking lots, the
- 7:43Speaker 1: surface lots, and those come in at a day at
- 7:46Speaker 1: a rate of fifteen dollars a day per car, So
- 7:50Speaker 1: fifteen dollars a day per car.
- 7:54Speaker 2: It's not really too bad, I find it.
- 7:56Speaker 1: I find it reasonable, yeah, for such a large premiere
- 7:59Speaker 1: event experience. But I think just to let everybody know,
- 8:03Speaker 1: you know, my goodness, I used to pay twenty five
- 8:07Speaker 1: dollars to park in somebody's backyard when I went down
- 8:10Speaker 1: to rosenblat Well.
- 8:11Speaker 4: I kind of have a follow up question about that
- 8:13Speaker 4: Frank has another question about crowd control at the College
- 8:16Speaker 4: World Series. But let's say there's a business downtown that
- 8:21Speaker 4: has a private parking lot, whether that's right near the
- 8:23Speaker 4: stadium or whether that's near some of the fan fest
- 8:26Speaker 4: activities that are a few blocks away. If they have
- 8:29Speaker 4: a private parking lot to their business, can they charge
- 8:32Speaker 4: whatever they want?
- 8:33Speaker 2: Yes, they can.
- 8:34Speaker 1: If it's privately owned, they control it, they can charge
- 8:38Speaker 1: whatever they can. And you see those as you're going
- 8:40Speaker 1: down towards the ballpark. You see a lot of people
- 8:43Speaker 1: just standing out in these little private parking lots with
- 8:46Speaker 1: a cardboard sign saying park all day for fifty dollars
- 8:49Speaker 1: or whatever. And they if they're privately owned, they can
- 8:52Speaker 1: control them. But I just wanted to make sure people
- 8:54Speaker 1: knew that that the parking garage is downtown. They're owned
- 8:58Speaker 1: by the city as well as the ballpark, as well
- 8:59Speaker 1: as the surface lots, as well as the arena convention Center.
- 9:03Speaker 1: But MECCA controls that lot A B D around the
- 9:09Speaker 1: Arena convention Center. They determine that and then the city
- 9:12Speaker 1: basically determines the cost of the city garages. But to me,
- 9:16Speaker 1: it's pretty reasonable because, as I said, I remembered Rosenblatt
- 9:20Speaker 1: when they were down there and you were parking.
- 9:22Speaker 2: In people's front and backyards.
- 9:24Speaker 1: People love that for the ten days of the College
- 9:27Speaker 1: World Series.
- 9:28Speaker 2: But yeah, and it's they do such a good job.
- 9:32Speaker 1: I think I was really concerned the first year we
- 9:34Speaker 1: had a ballgame down at the new Ballpark and at
- 9:38Speaker 1: Charles Schwab it was first TDM or Trade, but how
- 9:41Speaker 1: the traffic control would be. But OPD traffic they do
- 9:45Speaker 1: such a good job. I mean they control the lights
- 9:47Speaker 1: down there, the traffic lights. They want to make sure
- 9:50Speaker 1: the traffic is moving and moving smoothly. And it was
- 9:53Speaker 1: almost a sterile feeling to me. I mean that whole
- 9:57Speaker 1: place in thirty minutes was cleared out. It was pretty amazing.
- 10:00Speaker 1: It's pretty impressive. And when you go down there, you
- 10:01Speaker 1: have to have a good attitude about it. You know,
- 10:03Speaker 1: it might be a little bit tricky.
- 10:05Speaker 4: You might have to wait a few stop lights, and
- 10:06Speaker 4: you might have to wait in some traffic, but just
- 10:09Speaker 4: have to be patient, have a good mindset and realize
- 10:11Speaker 4: that you're going to watch a baseball game and have
- 10:13Speaker 4: fun downtown.
- 10:15Speaker 2: Enjoy it. It's part of the experience. I know.
- 10:17Speaker 1: I like and I love people watching anyway, so I
- 10:20Speaker 1: think it's I think it's fun to go down there
- 10:22Speaker 1: and just look around.
- 10:23Speaker 2: But I will be down there.
- 10:25Speaker 1: You know, when you're the mayor, you get so I'm
- 10:29Speaker 1: sure Mary Owing will have these this year. You get
- 10:32Speaker 1: two seats just too. I've had people complain to me
- 10:34Speaker 1: about this too. Why does the NC DOUBLEA get the
- 10:37Speaker 1: mayor all these seats?
- 10:38Speaker 5: They don't.
- 10:38Speaker 1: The NC DOUBLEA will give the mayor two seats behind
- 10:41Speaker 1: home play two that's it for the length of the season,
- 10:45Speaker 1: and then I would buy personally, I would buy two
- 10:48Speaker 1: more next to it, and then I would buy two
- 10:50Speaker 1: along the first baseline.
- 10:51Speaker 2: So I basically had six.
- 10:53Speaker 5: So are you in may Or Ewing seats going to
- 10:55Speaker 5: be next to each other?
- 10:56Speaker 1: Well, I was just those two behind home played. I'm
- 11:00Speaker 1: sure Mary Ewing will have this year. No, I didn't
- 11:03Speaker 1: buy the two next to it. I thought that would
- 11:05Speaker 1: be awkward, that would be fun. Well, but I did
- 11:08Speaker 1: buy mine along the first baseline again, So yeah, they're
- 11:12Speaker 1: really good seats. And I love watching baseball. And you
- 11:15Speaker 1: can guarantee it happens every year. We had storms around
- 11:17Speaker 1: last night, but it happens every year that there's at
- 11:20Speaker 1: least one day that there's some big death cloud over
- 11:24Speaker 1: the stadium and you're like, holy cow. I remember the
- 11:27Speaker 1: first year it was open, we had that death cloud
- 11:30Speaker 1: over this stadium. It was the most amazing looking cloud
- 11:33Speaker 1: you've ever seen because it was black and you could
- 11:35Speaker 1: just see the edges, and up in the Mecca suite
- 11:39Speaker 1: up at the ballpark, they have a big picture of
- 11:41Speaker 1: that cloud over the ballpark. And I don't know if
- 11:44Speaker 1: people recall, but there was also they had to evacuate
- 11:47Speaker 1: the stadium that year because of bad weather, and they
- 11:50Speaker 1: were like, oops, we don't really have a.
- 11:53Speaker 2: Plan to evacuate the stadium.
- 11:54Speaker 5: Wow.
- 11:55Speaker 1: So they created, obviously out of necessity, a plan what
- 12:00Speaker 1: they were going to do if people were in the
- 12:01Speaker 1: stadium and it was full and bad weather was coming,
- 12:04Speaker 1: and what the plan was. So it's all about keeping
- 12:07Speaker 1: people safe and having a good time and enjoy your
- 12:11Speaker 1: your fried twinkie covered in chocolate and have a beer
- 12:15Speaker 1: with that too.
- 12:17Speaker 4: Frank, thanks for hanging on for us here you are
- 12:20Speaker 4: live on kfe B with Jean's author Good Yes, thank you.
- 12:24Speaker 6: And thanks for the opportunity.
- 12:26Speaker 3: Jean.
- 12:27Speaker 6: I have been doing research in cities now are getting
- 12:30Speaker 6: drones that whenever there's gathering, whether it be a protest
- 12:34Speaker 6: or something like the College World Series. These drones are
- 12:37Speaker 6: just there to get photos. Like if somebody throws a
- 12:40Speaker 6: rock or throws something onto the field, they've now got
- 12:42Speaker 6: a picture of it. Yes, and it's clear. And I'm
- 12:45Speaker 6: wondering if Omaha whatever in the future think about that.
- 12:48Speaker 6: What's your opinion.
- 12:49Speaker 1: Oh, yeah, we do it. I mean, the Omaha Police
- 12:52Speaker 1: Department basically has I will call it a drone unit,
- 12:56Speaker 1: and they have drone pilots and they have very sufficient
- 13:00Speaker 1: stickated drones with the Omaha Police Department and they have
- 13:03Speaker 1: been in use and so and they're expanding that. You know,
- 13:06Speaker 1: we do have an air unit also and that are
- 13:11Speaker 1: helicopters able. One we have our three helicopters. They are
- 13:14Speaker 1: out at the Bennington Airport. That's where they are stationed.
- 13:18Speaker 2: And then we have.
- 13:19Speaker 1: That drone unit and those have come in very handy
- 13:23Speaker 1: with even pursuits. There has been incidences where there has been,
- 13:30Speaker 1: for example, gunfire and the guns were thrown to try
- 13:35Speaker 1: to hide them, and they were thrown up on roofs
- 13:37Speaker 1: if you could believe this, And in the olden days
- 13:40Speaker 1: they'd have to call the Amah Fire Department to get
- 13:42Speaker 1: on their ladders to look on the roof. They just
- 13:44Speaker 1: flew a drone over and they can they can see
- 13:47Speaker 1: what they want to see. There was a person that
- 13:50Speaker 1: wanted to jump off the Bob Carey Bridge about seven
- 13:54Speaker 1: eight years ago, and you know, the police were on
- 13:57Speaker 1: the bridge trying to talk the person down from the ledge,
- 14:01Speaker 1: but the drone was on the other side above the water,
- 14:05Speaker 1: and so you could really see what was going on.
- 14:08Speaker 2: And so, yes, we do use them. I think we
- 14:12Speaker 2: will be using.
- 14:12Speaker 1: Them a lot more in the future, and they are
- 14:14Speaker 1: expanding that unit. The police have done a demonstration before
- 14:19Speaker 1: out in the public. I remembered one that we did
- 14:22Speaker 1: with the superintendents with Omaha's schools and showed them our
- 14:27Speaker 1: capability of how we could use drones. But they are
- 14:31Speaker 1: very sophisticated right now, and they do call them drone pilots,
- 14:35Speaker 1: those that manage them. But yeah, and they will be
- 14:37Speaker 1: around during the College World Series. The other thing you
- 14:41Speaker 1: see quite a bit in the College World Series is
- 14:43Speaker 1: you do see able one fly over the stadium quite often.
- 14:47Speaker 1: And I know people know this, it's no secret, but
- 14:50Speaker 1: up on the roof of the stadium and then across
- 14:52Speaker 1: the street on some of the buildings there are SWAT
- 14:54Speaker 1: teams that are there and always there to make sure
- 14:58Speaker 1: that they are doing what they can to keep everybody safe.
- 15:01Speaker 4: This is kind of an interesting question. Nick sent us
- 15:04Speaker 4: an email at comment at kfab dot com. The phone
- 15:07Speaker 4: lines are also open four zero two, five, five, eight
- 15:10Speaker 4: eleven ten. And I'm kind of putting my own twist
- 15:13Speaker 4: on this question. What would it look like? Would it
- 15:17Speaker 4: make any sense? Would it be productive for the city
- 15:21Speaker 4: to appoint a few buses or maybe small shuttles that
- 15:24Speaker 4: could be used to transport people to and from the
- 15:28Speaker 4: stadium or at checkpoint outside the stadium.
- 15:31Speaker 1: Oh my gosh, I love this question because I'm going
- 15:34Speaker 1: to say, in twenty twenty eight, we are going to
- 15:39Speaker 1: have a streetcar doing exactly that.
- 15:43Speaker 2: I rest my case.
- 15:45Speaker 1: No, this is going to be why this streetcar is
- 15:48Speaker 1: going to be so valuable when we have events like this,
- 15:53Speaker 1: And you know, we say when we have events like
- 15:55Speaker 1: the College World Series at streetcar, we may run it
- 15:57Speaker 1: till four in the morning. But but this is what
- 16:01Speaker 1: I had in mind in the very beginning. I mean,
- 16:03Speaker 1: people in West Omaha. I live in west Omaha. I
- 16:06Speaker 1: live in the millerd area, and they would say, I'm
- 16:09Speaker 1: never going to use that streetcar. Why are you doing it?
- 16:12Speaker 1: I live in West Omaha.
- 16:13Speaker 2: But here's the deal.
- 16:15Speaker 1: You know, at Midtown, for example, there were three parking garages.
- 16:19Speaker 1: The City of Omaha has purchased those so that they
- 16:21Speaker 1: can own and operate and manage them at low costs.
- 16:25Speaker 1: And so I live in West Omaha, I can drive down,
- 16:29Speaker 1: I could park at Midtown, not even get downtown. Park
- 16:32Speaker 1: my car there in a city on garage that would
- 16:34Speaker 1: be very safe, low costs. Jump on the streetcar, which
- 16:38Speaker 1: is absolutely free, take it right downtown, right to the ballpark,
- 16:42Speaker 1: right to tenth and Capital, right to the.
- 16:44Speaker 2: Area around there.
- 16:46Speaker 1: And then when you are done, you can hop back
- 16:48Speaker 1: on the streetcar and go back wherever you came from.
- 16:52Speaker 1: And so that is coming, and in twenty twenty eight
- 16:56Speaker 1: that will be available, and for all of you. I'm
- 17:00Speaker 1: gonna say I told you so, I might be I
- 17:03Speaker 1: might be pumping or pushing daisies by the time people say, hey,
- 17:07Speaker 1: this is a really good idea. But that's that's basically
- 17:10Speaker 1: one of the reasons, beside economic development, that we really
- 17:14Speaker 1: pushed the street car.
- 17:15Speaker 2: It's a way to get you in around and out
- 17:17Speaker 2: of downtown.
- 17:18Speaker 4: I promise that was not a t ball set up
- 17:23Speaker 4: there for the street car. But but I got a
- 17:27Speaker 4: call from Dean while you were answering that question, and
- 17:30Speaker 4: Dean said, I remember back when the College World Series
- 17:33Speaker 4: was played at Rosenblatt, there was a bus that took
- 17:36Speaker 4: people from West Roads to the stadium. And now I'm
- 17:40Speaker 4: thinking with all the construction down there, and sure the
- 17:43Speaker 4: streetcar will make this a much seamless and much more
- 17:47Speaker 4: seamless process down the line.
- 17:49Speaker 2: But maybe you don't charge anything for it.
- 17:51Speaker 4: Maybe you do, I don't know, but just something where
- 17:53Speaker 4: you can get a few, you know, three or four
- 17:55Speaker 4: hot spots just located around the stadium. Bring them in sure,
- 17:58Speaker 4: And you know that might be tough to co ordinate
- 18:00Speaker 4: though and organized.
- 18:01Speaker 2: Well.
- 18:02Speaker 1: You know, the bus system is Metro Transit. People think
- 18:05Speaker 1: the bus system is run by the City of Omaha,
- 18:07Speaker 1: but it is Metro Transit. If you look at your
- 18:09Speaker 1: property tax bill, they have their own leving authority. You
- 18:13Speaker 1: pay a levey that goes to Metro Transit and they
- 18:16Speaker 1: manage the bus system.
- 18:17Speaker 2: But we do have the bus Rapid Transit.
- 18:19Speaker 1: Now as you know, that runs from downtown all the
- 18:22Speaker 1: way to the West Roads and back with multiple stops
- 18:25Speaker 1: along the way. So there is that ability to take
- 18:29Speaker 1: a bus from West Road still and go all the
- 18:31Speaker 1: way downtown on the bus rapid transit. You may not
- 18:35Speaker 1: get right in front of the ballpark and have to
- 18:37Speaker 1: walk a couple of blocks, but that is all quite available.
- 18:41Speaker 1: So those are things that I think you know are coming.
- 18:45Speaker 1: It's really going to help the growth of downtown. It's
- 18:47Speaker 1: really going to help people move around downtown. And keep
- 18:50Speaker 1: in mind, folks, your taxes are not going to go
- 18:52Speaker 1: up to pay for the streetcar. It's being paid for
- 18:56Speaker 1: by the developers that build around the streetcar line. And
- 19:00Speaker 1: the cost of the street car is zero. You can
- 19:03Speaker 1: hop on and off it as much as you want.
- 19:07Speaker 5: I hear you.
- 19:09Speaker 4: Doug said he was priced out of the world. Sorry,
- 19:12Speaker 4: he was priced out of the cws. He enjoyed used
- 19:17Speaker 4: because he used to be able to go. I paid
- 19:18Speaker 4: eighty dollars for a general admission pack of ten, complaining
- 19:22Speaker 4: happened to park about ten dollars. I remember when general
- 19:25Speaker 4: admission was six. And then he also says, I really
- 19:28Speaker 4: missed the fireworks show that was held there. You could
- 19:30Speaker 4: see it from all over the city.
- 19:31Speaker 1: And you know, I mean, prices do go up. There's
- 19:34Speaker 1: no doubt about that. The price of admission is determined
- 19:38Speaker 1: by this group. You know, it's mecca, it's the city
- 19:41Speaker 1: of Omaha at c NCAA College World Series. About what
- 19:45Speaker 1: the prices of the tickets are, I think, really they
- 19:48Speaker 1: are still pretty reasonable those old ticket books. I think
- 19:51Speaker 1: when Jack Dezing and Lisa Dezing were on, we talked
- 19:55Speaker 1: about the cost in those ticket books. But you know
- 19:58Speaker 1: it's still it's it's what they charge now. And the
- 20:02Speaker 1: food costs more too, There's no doubt about it. But
- 20:06Speaker 1: that is a new stadium. As you know, it costs
- 20:09Speaker 1: about one hundred and thirty one million to build. That
- 20:11Speaker 1: stadium started construction in two thousand and nine.
- 20:16Speaker 2: The first year.
- 20:19Speaker 1: It made a profit of five point six million, I
- 20:21Speaker 1: mean the very very first year. And keep in mind
- 20:25Speaker 1: that there are seating in that stadium for twenty four thousand.
- 20:29Speaker 1: There's the ability to expand up. Jack Deezing doesn't want
- 20:33Speaker 1: to even talk about this, but probably up to at
- 20:35Speaker 1: least ten thousand more if you're standing. And so people
- 20:40Speaker 1: do come, I mean they still come. They fill up
- 20:43Speaker 1: that stadium. Every single game, and so we try to
- 20:46Speaker 1: keep it so that it is reasonable for people to
- 20:49Speaker 1: go to. But as we keep on talking about over
- 20:52Speaker 1: and over, Scott was talking about this morning, cost of
- 20:55Speaker 1: everything's going up, and the cost of food and the
- 20:58Speaker 1: cost of maintenance. There's a new scoreboard people will see
- 21:01Speaker 1: this year out in center field or it's left field.
- 21:05Speaker 1: I guess that we hadn't had before that I think
- 21:08Speaker 1: is going to be really good too. So we used
- 21:10Speaker 1: to have just the one big one. But anyway, I
- 21:13Speaker 1: know those old bleacher seats, those were really those are
- 21:17Speaker 1: really good in the seats that you used to be
- 21:19Speaker 1: able to buy the ticket books for.
- 21:21Speaker 2: But it's just, you know, it's it's a matter of
- 21:25Speaker 2: financing too.
- 21:26Speaker 4: Jean's author and I am Peyton Highlock. I'm gonna self
- 21:29Speaker 4: indulge really quick.
- 21:31Speaker 2: Gene.
- 21:31Speaker 4: I got a question that says, hey, hey all, why
- 21:34Speaker 4: is producer p wearing a Mexico jersey?
- 21:37Speaker 2: Okay, I'm putting you on this spot.
- 21:40Speaker 5: Payton really good.
- 21:41Speaker 2: Why you have him?
- 21:42Speaker 1: He has a bright green Mexico jersey on explain yourself.
- 21:45Speaker 4: Yes, First of all, Mexico is opening up the World
- 21:49Speaker 4: Cup today. Game number one of the World Cup is
- 21:52Speaker 4: in Mexico.
- 21:53Speaker 5: Mexico is playing.
- 21:54Speaker 4: Also, my really good friend from one oh two point
- 21:58Speaker 4: three L Patron, Yes in the building, Sergio. Yes, Sergio
- 22:03Speaker 4: gave me this jersey. He gifted it to me very graciously.
- 22:06Speaker 4: And this is a nineteen ninety four World Cup jersey.
- 22:11Speaker 2: It's vintage.
- 22:12Speaker 5: It's vintage.
- 22:13Speaker 4: My very good friend Sergio gave this to me from
- 22:15Speaker 4: one of two point three El Patron and Mexico's opening
- 22:18Speaker 4: the World Cup today.
- 22:19Speaker 2: Oh yeah, well had to be done. That's pretty cool.
- 22:22Speaker 5: This is a perfect occasion to wear it.
- 22:24Speaker 2: Do you know?
- 22:24Speaker 1: Union Soccer gave me a soccer jersey, so I just
- 22:28Speaker 1: might have to wear that in one day.
- 22:29Speaker 5: That would be so incredible.
- 22:31Speaker 4: And you know what, Gene, Union Omaha is the best
- 22:34Speaker 4: team in their league, best team.
- 22:36Speaker 2: They're great.
- 22:37Speaker 1: And you know, Gary Green is one of the owners
- 22:39Speaker 1: of Union Soccer, and Gary's going to be coming on
- 22:42Speaker 1: the show and we're going to talk about the new
- 22:43Speaker 1: stadium and we're going to be talking soccer.
- 22:45Speaker 2: That's so exciting, and they're one of their best players.
- 22:49Speaker 4: Is a Omaha native, graduated from Ralston High School and
- 22:53Speaker 4: also went to Omaha South. An incredible local talent here
- 22:57Speaker 4: that's leading our local team.
- 22:59Speaker 2: It's a storybook story right there. Do you go watch
- 23:02Speaker 2: Have you watched union soccer?
- 23:03Speaker 5: Yes?
- 23:03Speaker 2: I have too. I know it's really fun to do that.
- 23:05Speaker 2: It's really fun.
- 23:06Speaker 1: But oh boy, when they get that new stadium downtown,
- 23:09Speaker 1: that's gonna be just think about. I love thinking about
- 23:12Speaker 1: downtown though, and I tell people this a lot. When
- 23:13Speaker 1: I moved here, I moved here from Texas in nineteen
- 23:18Speaker 1: ninety three. I do not live in Saint Louis, but
- 23:21Speaker 1: I moved here in nineteen ninety three. And when I
- 23:24Speaker 1: think how downtown has changed since that first day I
- 23:27Speaker 1: stepped off the airplane, it's amazing.
- 23:31Speaker 2: I mean there was no.
- 23:33Speaker 1: Arena, convention center, there was no Gallop, there was no
- 23:36Speaker 1: Bob Carey Bridge, there was no you just go to
- 23:39Speaker 1: the ballpark.
- 23:40Speaker 2: There was.
- 23:40Speaker 1: When you go on and on about how downtown has
- 23:44Speaker 1: developed and grown and changed and you know, the last
- 23:48Speaker 1: twenty five years or so, it's it's pretty amazing. And
- 23:51Speaker 1: I always love the College World Series because I love
- 23:54Speaker 1: talking from two people from out of town and getting
- 23:57Speaker 1: their opinion of Omaha. And people would say, every year,
- 24:02Speaker 1: if I come every year, hopefully a lot of them
- 24:04Speaker 1: come every year, like LSU, they are always big fans,
- 24:07Speaker 1: they travel well, but they would just say, oh my gosh,
- 24:09Speaker 1: there's so much more to do, and there's so much more,
- 24:12Speaker 1: you know, I feel safe down here.
- 24:14Speaker 2: And I love hearing that.
- 24:16Speaker 1: The one thing, and I hope this continues that I
- 24:19Speaker 1: would hear the most from people from out of town
- 24:22Speaker 1: about Omaha if they would say it is so clean
- 24:26Speaker 1: and I feel safe here. And I thought, man, you know,
- 24:29Speaker 1: if a mayor can have a clean, safe city, you
- 24:32Speaker 1: know you're you're hitting a home run. So absolutely a
- 24:37Speaker 1: pun intended, So there you go.
- 24:39Speaker 4: I also think about how great those businesses do downtown
- 24:43Speaker 4: at embracing the College World Series.
- 24:45Speaker 2: Yeah, they make a lot of money.
- 24:47Speaker 4: Last week, Emery Songer had the manager of Rockos in
- 24:52Speaker 4: the building for an interview, Pat mckenvoy. I think if
- 24:56Speaker 4: I said that correctly, just talking about Rocos and how
- 25:00Speaker 4: great they do down there. And you know those jello shots,
- 25:03Speaker 4: fifty percent of the jello shot goes to charity, the
- 25:06Speaker 4: other fifty percent back into the business, So that's always
- 25:09Speaker 4: a really cool thing.
- 25:09Speaker 1: And I forgot the number, but it was like in
- 25:12Speaker 1: the hundreds of thousands of cello shots they had you know,
- 25:16Speaker 1: maybe I'll try to get a hold of the folks
- 25:18Speaker 1: at the Mattress Factory too, because the Mattriss Factory does
- 25:23Speaker 1: an incredible job during the College World Series too. So
- 25:27Speaker 1: those businesses around that stadium, and you know that area
- 25:32Speaker 1: is growing with the Millworks district that you know Paul
- 25:35Speaker 1: Smiths Group has done, the Builder's District, which is west
- 25:39Speaker 1: of the ballpark where the new Keywit headquarters is. All
- 25:43Speaker 1: of those new areas downtown continue to grow and develop
- 25:47Speaker 1: and have more people living downtown. So that just adds,
- 25:52Speaker 1: I think to the ambiance of being downtown. And once again,
- 25:56Speaker 1: like I said, when that street cars up and run
- 25:58Speaker 1: and it's going to be so easy to on and
- 26:00Speaker 1: off it and just park your car one time and
- 26:03Speaker 1: get in and around and out of downtown, so it be,
- 26:06Speaker 1: it'll be great. And I can't wait for everything to start.
- 26:09Speaker 1: So we got a lot going on. World Cup soccer
- 26:12Speaker 1: in the United States and the men's NCAA College World
- 26:17Speaker 1: Series right here in Omaha starting to tomorrow.
- 26:20Speaker 5: And then we'll get to the phone lines really quick.
- 26:22Speaker 5: Mark called me doing the break.
- 26:23Speaker 4: Didn't want to go on air, but he said, you know,
- 26:26Speaker 4: locals might have a harder time buying tickets because people
- 26:30Speaker 4: that have season tickets to the College World Series go
- 26:34Speaker 4: to a few games, use a few tickets, and sell
- 26:37Speaker 4: the rest for double or triple the price. And then
- 26:40Speaker 4: I also got a phone call from Missy, who is
- 26:42Speaker 4: going to be put through on air here also has
- 26:44Speaker 4: some thoughts about the ticket prices.
- 26:46Speaker 5: Missy. Thanks for the call. This morning.
- 26:47Speaker 2: You're live with Jean Stouthard on KFAB. Hi, good morning, Hike,
- 26:51Speaker 2: taking my call.
- 26:54Speaker 3: I moved here. I'm also from Cactus. I moved here
- 26:58Speaker 3: twenty one years ago. I used to take my kids
- 27:03Speaker 3: to the baseball game for College World Series every year until.
- 27:06Speaker 6: They grew up.
- 27:08Speaker 3: I understand the cost of living in the prist scene
- 27:11Speaker 3: and everything else has gone up, but Mecca and everybody else,
- 27:15Speaker 3: and I'm sorry, as you.
- 27:18Speaker 2: At the previous mayor.
- 27:21Speaker 3: Nobody can really go enjoy the games here in Omaha
- 27:26Speaker 3: that live in Omaha because you've got ticket prices two
- 27:29Speaker 3: hundred dollars a ticket. If you go online right now
- 27:33Speaker 3: and look for the very last final three games of
- 27:36Speaker 3: the championship, there are a thousand dollars plus. There's people
- 27:43Speaker 3: here that cannot afford that, and that is a shame,
- 27:47Speaker 3: especially people that live in Omaha in the surrounding areas.
- 27:52Speaker 3: People the friend basis, the fan basis that come here
- 27:58Speaker 3: for their teams and their kids play on from the
- 28:01Speaker 3: university and stuff. Sure they can afford it, buy it
- 28:06Speaker 3: for people in Omaha and Iowa and the surrounding areas cannot.
- 28:11Speaker 2: Well, thanks for.
- 28:12Speaker 1: Calling in, appreciate your comment. And you know, each team
- 28:15Speaker 1: that comes to the College World Series, of course they
- 28:18Speaker 1: they do have a certain amount of seats that they
- 28:20Speaker 1: can purchase because they want them to be able to
- 28:23Speaker 1: follow their team and enjoy the game. But there are
- 28:26Speaker 1: still when you say there's no room for people in Omaha,
- 28:31Speaker 1: that really that is not accurate because you know, number one,
- 28:35Speaker 1: that stadium fills up and so it's not that there's
- 28:39Speaker 1: a bunch of empty seats because it's too expensive to
- 28:42Speaker 1: go to. Secondly, you can go on the NCAA Men's
- 28:47Speaker 1: College World Series web page and you can buy tickets now.
- 28:52Speaker 2: For the games.
- 28:53Speaker 1: You don't have to, you know, go online and get
- 28:56Speaker 1: this from a second or third hand that people are
- 28:58Speaker 1: scalping these tickets and trying to charge more than they
- 29:03Speaker 1: are worth. You can go online and you can buy
- 29:06Speaker 1: tickets now there. You are absolutely accurate at saying some
- 29:10Speaker 1: people will buy season tickets and then they try to
- 29:13Speaker 1: sell them for higher prices. And they try to do
- 29:16Speaker 1: that because as it gets closer to the finals, they
- 29:18Speaker 1: become more valuable. But why are they doing it? Because
- 29:21Speaker 1: they can, you know, because people buy them. And so
- 29:26Speaker 1: that is an issue that I know we talk about
- 29:29Speaker 1: every year with the College World Series. But at the
- 29:32Speaker 1: same time, the prices have gone up since the beginning.
- 29:37Speaker 1: I mean, for you know, this has been going on
- 29:39Speaker 1: for seventy five years now, but still it is affordable
- 29:44Speaker 1: for many and there is still a lot of room
- 29:46Speaker 1: for people in Omaha, and a lot of people in
- 29:49Speaker 1: Omaha do still go to the College World Series most definitely.
- 29:53Speaker 1: You know, Gene, there's a few things that we can
- 29:56Speaker 1: talk about to end the show. But I got to
- 29:57Speaker 1: talk back yesterday. You brought up a question about, oh,
- 30:00Speaker 1: what might your favorite president be? Yes, and so I
- 30:03Speaker 1: got to talk back yesterday from Ed about his favorite president.
- 30:07Speaker 1: So I just thought i'd send that through the airwaves
- 30:09Speaker 1: really quick.
- 30:10Speaker 2: Good.
- 30:12Speaker 7: My opinion greatest president was President Nixon. He ended Vietnam War.
- 30:18Speaker 7: Why a lottery number was coming up, and I figured
- 30:21Speaker 7: I was going to go over there, but he saved
- 30:24Speaker 7: my butt.
- 30:24Speaker 1: I didn't go.
- 30:25Speaker 7: Second greatest one would be Reagan. He got the economy
- 30:29Speaker 7: straightened out. And my third favorite resident would probably be Lincoln. Okay,
- 30:34Speaker 7: thank you.
- 30:37Speaker 1: I really agree with what he said about Reagan and Lincoln.
- 30:41Speaker 1: I'm not sure about Richard Nixon here. I mean that's
- 30:45Speaker 1: his opinion. That's fine, But you know, Richard Nixon had
- 30:48Speaker 1: to resign from the presidency in uh it wasn't good
- 30:53Speaker 1: what was going on and the reason he resigned, so
- 30:57Speaker 1: he kind of resigned in shame from the office. However, Yeah,
- 31:01Speaker 1: the Vietnam War did go on forever and ever, I
- 31:04Speaker 1: would say when you said Lincoln, Lincoln is our sixteenth president.
- 31:08Speaker 1: He led us through the Civil War, helped led us
- 31:12Speaker 1: through defeating the Confederates, abolished slavery. He would be right
- 31:16Speaker 1: there on the top of my list too. And I
- 31:19Speaker 1: mentioned yesterday and Reagan too. I mentioned Reagan. Who's the
- 31:22Speaker 1: fortieth president. You got to bring in George Washington right
- 31:25Speaker 1: there too. I mean, George Washington was our first president.
- 31:31Speaker 1: He led the Revolutionary War against the British Empire and
- 31:34Speaker 1: gave American America are independents, so those are my but
- 31:39Speaker 1: I'm interested because, like I said yesterday, I talked about
- 31:42Speaker 1: the first president, the sixteenth, and the fortieth. There's a
- 31:46Speaker 1: lot of presidents in between there, and so yeah, what's
- 31:49Speaker 1: your thought on that. Who do you think is the
- 31:51Speaker 1: greatest president and why? And you could tell us what
- 31:55Speaker 1: you think about the current president too.
- 31:57Speaker 5: Absolutely.
- 31:58Speaker 1: You know, Mike Flood was on with Scott this morning,
- 32:00Speaker 1: and you know, before Mike was on this show, Bacon
- 32:05Speaker 1: was on this show, Ricketts was on this show. They
- 32:08Speaker 1: all agreed our federal delegation that what was happening in
- 32:13Speaker 1: Iron was necessary. They supported it. But now what I'm
- 32:17Speaker 1: hearing I heard from Mike Flood this morning too, is
- 32:20Speaker 1: it needs to end. We've got to end this. You know,
- 32:23Speaker 1: the prices are up, gases up, price of fertilizers up.
- 32:28Speaker 1: What's going on now needs to end. And I think
- 32:33Speaker 1: that's what Flood's message was today. So what's your feeling
- 32:37Speaker 1: on that too, Because the President said that cease fire
- 32:41Speaker 1: obviously it is. It does, It's meaningless right now because
- 32:45Speaker 1: because things are still going on and people are still
- 32:48Speaker 1: firing at each other. So it'll be interesting to see
- 32:52Speaker 1: how that all pans out in the next few days.
- 32:54Speaker 4: Welcome back your host of the show, Jean Stouthard. I'm
- 32:57Speaker 4: Peyton Hylock wrapping up the show here on a Thursday
- 33:00Speaker 4: with a little bit of great Balls of five.
- 33:02Speaker 2: Oh I like that. That was good.
- 33:04Speaker 1: You know, one more thing about the College World Series.
- 33:07Speaker 1: The economic impact right now for the city of Omaha
- 33:11Speaker 1: last year was valued at one hundred and forty seven
- 33:15Speaker 1: million dollar economic impact to the city and it also
- 33:20Speaker 1: creates fifteen hundred jobs. So you can put that all
- 33:24Speaker 1: together about what the College World Series means to Omaha.
- 33:28Speaker 2: You know, they think.
- 33:28Speaker 1: That the publicity that we get, what they call the
- 33:32Speaker 1: value of the event over like a three week period,
- 33:36Speaker 1: is estimated to be over two billion dollars because we
- 33:40Speaker 1: are seeing all over national news. You know, I mentioned
- 33:43Speaker 1: my seats behind home plate that I had that I
- 33:45Speaker 1: would always sit there. I like to be down there.
- 33:48Speaker 1: I don't like to be up where the sweets are.
- 33:50Speaker 1: But every now and then my son, who lives in
- 33:53Speaker 1: Cincinnati would call and he goes, what are you eating
- 33:56Speaker 1: because he would see me on the national news as
- 33:58Speaker 1: they were showing the r up to home plate and so,
- 34:02Speaker 1: but just think about all of that with they you know,
- 34:05Speaker 1: when they go to commercials, they show Creighton, they show Downtown,
- 34:08Speaker 1: they talk about Omaha, and that makes people know what
- 34:12Speaker 1: we got here.
- 34:12Speaker 4: Mom, I just saw you on national television. You had
- 34:14Speaker 4: a little bit of mustard in the corner of your mouth.
- 34:16Speaker 2: What are you eating? Mom?
- 34:17Speaker 1: You would do that, but it was it's just the
- 34:20Speaker 1: value of this College World series.
- 34:21Speaker 2: And like we said, now with the contract, the current
- 34:24Speaker 2: contract we have, and.
- 34:26Speaker 1: Jack Deezeing said, they are already looking at what they
- 34:28Speaker 1: need to incorporate and incorporate into the new contract.
- 34:32Speaker 2: But we will. We still have a.
- 34:34Speaker 1: Contract that we will play a game in twenty thirty seven,
- 34:37Speaker 1: so it's it's you know, at least eleven more years
- 34:40Speaker 1: that we will have it.
- 34:40Speaker 3: Here.
- 34:41Speaker 4: Cut into the phone lines now for zero, two, five, five, eight,
- 34:44Speaker 4: eleven ten, Tim, you are a live here on news
- 34:48Speaker 4: radio eleven ten.
- 34:49Speaker 1: I mean you don't think we need people complaining about
- 34:52Speaker 1: the prices.
- 34:53Speaker 4: Yes, we do not need anybody complaining about the prices.
- 34:55Speaker 4: Tim did have a question though, about the street car,
- 34:58Speaker 4: and he said, why might that not be something that
- 35:00Speaker 4: gets extended towards the airport so it can be an
- 35:04Speaker 4: easy transport line there.
- 35:06Speaker 1: Yes, and you know, I think the chances of that
- 35:08Speaker 1: happening are very great because you got to look at
- 35:13Speaker 1: this first loop that they are under that's under construction
- 35:16Speaker 1: now as the initial route, and because we are paid,
- 35:21Speaker 1: the developers along the route are basically paying for it.
- 35:25Speaker 1: It is financed not through any taxpayer dollars, not through
- 35:29Speaker 1: any state dollars, not through any federal dollars at all.
- 35:33Speaker 1: We already applied for and received money for a grant
- 35:37Speaker 1: to You have to look at this as the initial route,
- 35:40Speaker 1: but we already applied for and received a grant to
- 35:43Speaker 1: study taking it up to the airport going north. It
- 35:47Speaker 1: would be funded differently because we really feel strongly that
- 35:51Speaker 1: you're not going to get as much development as we
- 35:55Speaker 1: go north all the way to the airport like we
- 35:57Speaker 1: did in the downtown area. So it's probably going to
- 36:01Speaker 1: require some federal dollars, et cetera, and that all has
- 36:04Speaker 1: to be worked out, but we already are studying with
- 36:07Speaker 1: a grant re received to take the route north. That
- 36:11Speaker 1: is actually why the east terminus is at tenth in Capital.
- 36:16Speaker 1: The east terminus originally was going to be at tenth
- 36:19Speaker 1: and Mike Fahee, right by the ballpark, but we figured
- 36:23Speaker 1: if we're going to swing it up north. We're going
- 36:25Speaker 1: to swing it up from tenth and Capital. So that's
- 36:28Speaker 1: why the end is right there at that corner. And
- 36:32Speaker 1: so yes, we are looking at that. I mean the
- 36:34Speaker 1: other way that or the other thought we had and
- 36:38Speaker 1: the other research that we're doing now is to take
- 36:41Speaker 1: it south to more downs towards the Zoo. And so
- 36:45Speaker 1: those are things that are being considered. But just look
- 36:48Speaker 1: at this initial route loop that we have is just
- 36:52Speaker 1: the initial route, same with the bus rapid transit, you know,
- 36:55Speaker 1: that goes from Tenth Street downtown all the way out
- 36:58Speaker 1: to the rest west Roads, and that is just to
- 37:01Speaker 1: be looked at as an initial route and there will
- 37:03Speaker 1: be other routes that'll branch off from that in the future.
- 37:06Speaker 4: Most definitely. And I'm just getting some people talking about
- 37:09Speaker 4: the tickets. One hundred and twenty five to one hundred
- 37:12Speaker 4: and seventy five dollars for tickets or a single ticket
- 37:16Speaker 4: to the game tomorrow, that's over one thousand dollars for
- 37:20Speaker 4: a family, and that that can be tough.
- 37:22Speaker 5: Definitely understand that concern.
- 37:25Speaker 1: Yeah, and I agree those tickets are are are very
- 37:29Speaker 1: very I mean for many that they are expensive and
- 37:33Speaker 1: I understand what people are saying about that, but at
- 37:37Speaker 1: the same time, you know, look at it again what
- 37:40Speaker 1: it does for Omaha. And keep in mind that that
- 37:44Speaker 1: stadium fills up, and you know, as the teams are eliminated,
- 37:49Speaker 1: those teams from out of town go home. They're not
- 37:52Speaker 1: staying there. Most of them are not staying there watching
- 37:55Speaker 1: the game, and more and more seats become available for
- 37:58Speaker 1: people that want to be there. You know, I was
- 38:02Speaker 1: like the one person that I met years and years
- 38:04Speaker 1: and years ago, and if Tennessee is playing, he's here.
- 38:07Speaker 2: Every year. I sit and talk with him.
- 38:09Speaker 1: Every year is Peyton Manning, And I've got I'll have
- 38:11Speaker 1: to post some pictures on my Facebook of people that
- 38:14Speaker 1: have been here in the past. But every time he
- 38:16Speaker 1: Tennessee is playing in Peyton's here, I'll see him and
- 38:18Speaker 1: he'll go, well, hello, Mayor, how are you doing. You know,
- 38:21Speaker 1: I've got to tell you a story about him. What
- 38:22Speaker 1: the first time I met him, he was here and
- 38:24Speaker 1: I just had foot surgery and I was running around
- 38:27Speaker 1: town with a big boot on my foot, and he goes, Mayor,
- 38:31Speaker 1: what did you do to your foot? And I said,
- 38:33Speaker 1: I had surgery on it. He goes, no, mayor, you
- 38:35Speaker 1: tell people you've been kicking. But that's what he said.
- 38:39Speaker 5: That's so fun.
- 38:39Speaker 1: Well, every time I see him, he'll say hi, he
- 38:42Speaker 1: remembers and he good great people. Kevin Cosner used to
- 38:45Speaker 1: come when cal State Fullerton would play. They would always
- 38:49Speaker 1: be Kevin Cosner watches at the ballpark.
- 38:51Speaker 2: That's really cool.
- 38:52Speaker 4: You know, I have Peyton Manning in my phone contact,
- 38:55Speaker 4: so I don't need to wait for the College World
- 38:56Speaker 4: Series to see that guy.
- 38:57Speaker 2: Of course you do.
- 39:00Speaker 4: Yeah, just wrapping up the show here. We did talk
- 39:01Speaker 4: about the streetcar a little bit, and you know what
- 39:03Speaker 4: that means. You're gonna get some answer, You're gonna get
- 39:05Speaker 4: some concerns about it. And Doug says, Gene, the number
- 39:08Speaker 4: one reason why I believe your street car will be
- 39:10Speaker 4: a huge failure is because of tracks.
- 39:13Speaker 5: No one likes tracks in the street.
- 39:15Speaker 4: No one likes walking over them, driving over them, and
- 39:17Speaker 4: now you won't be able to park where the tracks exist.
- 39:21Speaker 1: Well, okay, thanks for your opinion, but you know what
- 39:25Speaker 1: they do, I mean people do. They will drive right
- 39:28Speaker 1: over those tracks are pretty flushed with the concrete. I
- 39:31Speaker 1: do not think the streetcar is gonna be a failure,
- 39:34Speaker 1: but I have said this many times and I'll say
- 39:36Speaker 1: it again. I will own that streetcar. I'm not blaming
- 39:40Speaker 1: anybody for it. I'm not gonna say that it wasn't
- 39:44Speaker 1: something that I really tried to push with you know,
- 39:47Speaker 1: the help of a lot of people.
- 39:48Speaker 2: It was the urban Core Committee out of the Chamber.
- 39:50Speaker 1: And Heath Mellow, who is the President and CEO of
- 39:53Speaker 1: the Greater Omaha Chamber, is gonna be on the show
- 39:55Speaker 1: next week and we're gonna talk a little bit about
- 39:57Speaker 1: that urban Core Committee. It's dissolved, but when it came
- 40:00Speaker 1: up with this urban core plan. But I believe it
- 40:04Speaker 1: will be a great success. I think people other cities
- 40:08Speaker 1: like Kansas City just south of US, our neighbors, huge
- 40:11Speaker 1: success down there. In fact, they are expanding it now.
- 40:14Speaker 1: Every city that we studied, that the larger cities that
- 40:18Speaker 1: the street car has been very successful. But people will say, well,
- 40:23Speaker 1: long long time ago, we had a streetcar, a trolley.
- 40:25Speaker 2: It didn't work.
- 40:26Speaker 1: Well, they got rid of it. This is not a trolley.
- 40:30Speaker 1: This is a modern streetcar. And I think people I
- 40:32Speaker 1: feel very strongly, I know there's a ninety nine point
- 40:35Speaker 1: nine percent chance that this is going to be very,
- 40:38Speaker 1: very successful and people will enjoy it.
- 40:40Speaker 4: We are wrapping up the show here on a Thursday.
- 40:42Speaker 4: The College World Series first pitch is tomorrow afternoon at
- 40:46Speaker 4: one o'clock Troy versus West Virginia. Troy has never been
- 40:50Speaker 4: in the College World Series before, so that's really exciting.
- 40:53Speaker 1: That is cool when they're here for the first time.
- 40:55Speaker 1: What a thrill for those players.
- 40:58Speaker 4: It was a huge College World Series topic day today
- 41:00Speaker 4: in preparation for that. You'll find this episode on the
