- 0:00Hello and welcome to another episode of the Christian re
- 0:03podcast. Today's guest is a comedian, all
- 0:05the way from Buffalo New York and he's also a podcaster.
- 0:08His name is Max Kaiser. Welcome to the show.
- 0:10How you doing - doing good? How are you?
- 0:13I-i'm. I'm living the dream I'm doing
- 0:18ways. I'm just happy to be doing this
- 0:20today, so that's where my mind is going to go, you're a
- 0:24comedian. So I'm hoping you can make me
- 0:26laugh a lot today because I need.
- 0:28I'll try I'll try. No pressure, man.
- 0:32Yeah, what prompted you to get into comedy, man.
- 0:34Everyone's got a different story, talk us through your
- 0:36journey of becoming a comedian. Like what, what, what, why did
- 0:39you choose to become one? Yeah, so comedy like growing up,
- 0:44comedy stand-up comedy and stuff like that was always a big part,
- 0:48you know, like my dad got me into like Sam Kinison and Don
- 0:52Rickles, like some older American Comedians and then as I
- 0:57got older, I always just watch stand up.
- 0:59I went to stand up. Those and then I've been living
- 1:02in Spain for the last few years back in the States.
- 1:06Now, doing some fun Visa stuff, you know, bureaucracy, but when
- 1:11I was living in Madrid, a good friend of mine, there is a stand
- 1:14up comedian. So I would go to his shows like
- 1:17every week and then every week, it was very much like, oh, I
- 1:20could probably do that. Oh, I'll do that next week.
- 1:23I'll try next time. And then eventually he was just
- 1:26like, hey, either do it or shut up.
- 1:30You know, like, I don't want to just hear you talk about it,
- 1:33doing it all the time, so just do it.
- 1:35And then I was like, all right cool.
- 1:38So I've started writing jokes and then finally February 2020.
- 1:45I got onto a show and it was, I was expecting it to be like a
- 1:49random Open Mic situation where like no one was going to be
- 1:53there and that ended up being a benefit show for the the charity
- 1:58Madrid for refugees. And it was sold out.
- 2:01So there was like 70 people there who done.
- 2:03And I was second to headliner and I was like, okay, this is,
- 2:07you know, just throwing me right in the deep end.
- 2:09Let's go. And I told I like the, the host
- 2:13I was like, I've never done stand-up before, and she's like,
- 2:15yeah. Okay, all right.
- 2:19It's like, I guess I'm either gonna sink or swim.
- 2:21Let's see what happens. And it didn't go terribly, which
- 2:24was cool. And then I got, you know, I got
- 2:29the bug, At that point. So I got booked on another show
- 2:32in March but it happened to be March 14 2020 when everything is
- 2:38being closed and then stand up was basically illegal for like a
- 2:42year and a half. So I just didn't get up again
- 2:46until I moved to Barcelona and then I was getting up like every
- 2:50day doing spots and just working a lot and I've been yeah
- 2:53basically since October 11 to 21, it's been almost every day.
- 2:59I'm an what we originally brought you to Spain, how come
- 3:03you were there. So, I graduated University in
- 3:10the spring of 2017 and I knew I didn't want to go join the
- 3:15workforce yet. So I I've been working at summer
- 3:19camps most of my life. So I contacted an old director
- 3:22of mine was like, hey, do you know any camps in Europe that
- 3:25will hire me for the summer? And he put me in contact with
- 3:29some people. And I ended up working at an
- 3:31English Immersion Camp in France.
- 3:35And then, while working there, I met my friend Jake the comedian
- 3:40from Madrid and he was like, here's this program to teach
- 3:42English in Madrid and I was like okay just hang out in a
- 3:47classroom and live in Spain for a year done and so it was kind
- 3:52of just like it was like it was just delaying extending the
- 3:56college style of Life, and delaying the beginning of the
- 3:59real world stuff. Laying delaying the inevitable.
- 4:03Exactly, exactly. You like, What because I know
- 4:09comedy shows various far as like like how you get paid and stuff
- 4:12like that. Is it like a standard shot?
- 4:14Is it based on you know, how many people you get through the
- 4:18door? Like how does that work?
- 4:20So yeah, there's a couple different ones it's primarily
- 4:24based on time. So like the standard page show,
- 4:29you're probably going to do about 10 minutes.
- 4:31Hmm? Are you have to have at least 10
- 4:33minutes of material prepared? And then for that, you can be
- 4:37paid anything from 15 to 20 bucks, 20 Euro 20, something
- 4:41like that. It's, that's kind of like, the
- 4:45the universal standard for that, but then there are like in New
- 4:50York and in London, and Los Angeles in the bigger cities,
- 4:53they do have bringer shows, which is you basically, they
- 4:59give you Flyers. That have like a mark on them
- 5:03for you, like specifics. Like they might have your name
- 5:06on the back and so you got to go out and hand out.
- 5:09Those fliers you barking in the street, like, hey, come to the
- 5:11show. Hey, come to the show.
- 5:12Hey, come to the show. Those come through the door
- 5:16because they check them like, oh, did you get a flyer from
- 5:19somebody? That's a guy hears, Max's Tech
- 5:21Max's tick. And then you get paid a little
- 5:24bit more based on that, as might think, I'll promote yourself and
- 5:27so weird. I don't know why I find it.
- 5:29Odd that hey, come see me perform.
- 5:32I get it, but it's just because that, you know what, now you
- 5:35mentioned, I think I've met people doing that in London, in
- 5:39Leicester Square because it's quite a few comedy clubs there.
- 5:41Yeah. And there's a place that I
- 5:43actually went to, which had about three to five different
- 5:47comics, and two of them were brilliant and the others with
- 5:50the shits. And, yeah, it's fine.
- 5:52Like everyone's learning experiences, right?
- 5:54But there's like a noticeable difference.
- 5:57And I do actually recall, that one of them that I saw on stage,
- 6:00had previously given me a flyer, Fire.
- 6:02Let's just forget it. Yeah, you start when you're
- 6:05starting now. I mean, just everything
- 6:07self-promotion. I mean, like right now is with
- 6:10me like I'm doing literally everything myself and I wish I
- 6:14had stuff to be honest. No, no, that's okay.
- 6:20This would be really cool to pay someone else to do this.
- 6:22But yeah. It's also like for the booker
- 6:27for whoever puts you on the show, if they don't know you,
- 6:31they I know that you can do something if you're not funny,
- 6:35you can at least bring people you know which episode like
- 6:38actually getting shows, how much of it would you say is about who
- 6:41you know versus you know, maybe neriah t or like how is there a
- 6:47lot of like Outreach involved? You know, because I mean I can
- 6:50kind of relax I come from the music industry previously so I
- 6:54could I know there's a lot of Outreach initially trying to
- 6:57reach people and whatnot but like, how does it work for
- 6:59comedy? It's it's Yeah, I think it's
- 7:02probably super similar to the music industry.
- 7:04Whereas like in the first probably 23 years, it's 100% you
- 7:10doing it on your own and trying to reach out to as many people
- 7:13posting content getting anything out there that shows your do.
- 7:18It, you're actually like a credible person and then it's
- 7:23also. It's just a lot of like making
- 7:26sure you're a good person. Like it's not necessarily you
- 7:31trying to Reach out and get out to all these people.
- 7:34It's just like showing that you're putting in the work,
- 7:37you're showing up to the open mics working out, new material,
- 7:40you're not being rude to Bar people at the venue's.
- 7:46You know, you're not being rude to other Comics, like you got to
- 7:48be a genuine person. You see the lever.
- 7:53I mean there's a you run into like people getting a little
- 7:58cocky. Look if you have one good show
- 8:00it's like all right, I'm hot. Shit.
- 8:02You know, I don't need to do anything.
- 8:04I'm the best of the best and it's like, I've had a lot of
- 8:07good shows but I've also had a lot of bad shows, you know, like
- 8:11I know exactly where I am on the totem.
- 8:13Pole, you go sharing some stories with me about this mud,
- 8:16like, what will go into your personal experiences in a
- 8:18second? But I got to know, like, what
- 8:19people other people you've met, because I meet a lot of people
- 8:22from a lot of different Industries.
- 8:24And sometimes there is a little bit of that big league and crap
- 8:27and like, you know, like right, I'm the best.
- 8:29I'm too good to talk to you, you know that Shit.
- 8:34What if he would have been your experience is what stands out or
- 8:36his most memorable. It's like a lot because I've,
- 8:40you know, I've had the opportunity I've done stand-up
- 8:42in Spain, in New York and Chicago.
- 8:44And this is in Texas and Boston and like, subtle subtle flex
- 8:53flexible. You want, man?
- 8:54That's it. That's the whole point of what
- 8:55this show is. Exactly promotion.
- 8:57Promote yourself, why not? It's a lot of like a lot.
- 9:02Like the most of the I will say before, I step on anyone's feet,
- 9:05a lot of the people in Buffalo and a lot of the people, most of
- 9:08the people in Buffalo, most people in Barcelona that I
- 9:10interact with our great people. They're very good comedians.
- 9:14They're very supportive that help you write jokes, they'll
- 9:17help you get on shows and everything like that.
- 9:19But then when you get to places like New York City or Chicago,
- 9:23that have a million people trying to do the same thing, but
- 9:29it's a lot of like the old heads, the guys that have been
- 9:31doing it for 15 years and they're still, they're not on
- 9:35Club show. They're on like that dive bar
- 9:38show. Oh no.
- 9:39Oh, so you've got like some begrudging old guy who's better
- 9:43in my God, I never made it in that kind of what it's like.
- 9:46Oh, I used to write jokes with that person I used to, you know,
- 9:49Jerry, I used to do stuff with Jerry and it's like, okay, good.
- 9:52But now, you don't have you ever heard of a guy called
- 9:55Stuttering, John by any chance? It sounds familiar.
- 9:58Yeah. There's this guy.
- 9:59I had a couple even bringing this up, so Shout out to what
- 10:03are these podcast podcast that I listen to these guys basically
- 10:06just shot on podcasts. It's amazing.
- 10:09Sometimes they're really brutal. I will say that, but a lot of it
- 10:12is kind of fair, but they also talked a lot about Stuttering,
- 10:16John and Anthony and Opie if you're familiar with them.
- 10:20Yeah. And they've all kind of gone
- 10:22their separate ways but basically the significance of
- 10:24this is that back in the day, when we're talking late, 80's
- 10:2790's, whatever Stuttering John was character.
- 10:30A guy that used to appear on the house?
- 10:32Then show. And of course, a lot of those
- 10:34guys around there are all used to work with each other up here
- 10:37on each others shows, whatever the case may be.
- 10:38But you know, everyone has their time in the spotlight, some
- 10:42people continue to be in the spotlight, some people don't,
- 10:45and then some people fall into what you just mentioned in this
- 10:48kind of pool of irrelevancy. Which, again, it's not a
- 10:52problem, you know, it's not a bad thing, not throw any stones
- 10:55but some people take it. Well, transition into other
- 10:58things use what they made before.
- 11:01And Turn that into something else and some people sit and get
- 11:05progression of art, it and get annoyed and either try and live
- 11:08in the past, or they get annoyed because things haven't worked
- 11:12out. And I always just find that
- 11:13really interesting. Like I think if you're at that
- 11:18point, like I've had this conversation with myself as well
- 11:20because you know, I've been trying to pursue acting for a
- 11:22couple of years now and I'll be up doing the podcast a couple of
- 11:26years and to be honest, things haven't really worked out and
- 11:29that's just kind of how it is sometimes.
- 11:32One thing that I've been reminded by a bit, you know,
- 11:34people that listen to the show people that support me online or
- 11:37whatever is that, you know, you got to do it for the right
- 11:38reasons, you got to be, gotta love what you do, exactly.
- 11:42And like, ironically through doing that, that's how you'll
- 11:46get tension and you'll get people interested in what you're
- 11:48doing. It's not by posting 1000 Clips a
- 11:51day like that sure that stuff helps but like, or doing like,
- 11:54you know, ten shows a week or whatever.
- 11:56If you're a comedian it's about working hard on your craft
- 11:59enjoying what you do and I think, I think confidence as
- 12:03well. Like, I love comedy.
- 12:04I've been watching comedy ever since I was a young kid and one
- 12:08thing I've always noticed is that the best comedians?
- 12:11Make it seem effortless? Yeah.
- 12:13You know what I mean? Like, I look at like a Dave
- 12:15Chappelle, like, he's not even really doing comedy anymore.
- 12:17He's just walking around telling funny stories, you know, or even
- 12:21just storytelling, which to me, I'd love that.
- 12:23But I get, it's not always comedy but it's when she is
- 12:27there. There's like different levels to
- 12:28it. And obviously there's different
- 12:29styles. And what not?
- 12:30And yes, It's a really fascinating field which brings
- 12:34me to my next question. Actually, what's your style?
- 12:37Are you doing one-liners? You do more conversational you
- 12:39picking on the crowd like what's your style?
- 12:43I do, I do click on the crowd because you're going to anyone
- 12:49who's just like they're going to put is, hey, you in the shirt
- 12:54the front were basically like, it's just like it's just I think
- 12:58just my upbringing like growing up with my family.
- 13:02We just kind of roasted each other all the time but like not
- 13:05in a mean way, just kind of like you pick on the little things
- 13:09and stuff like that and so I do that.
- 13:11I mean, I do that to everyone. I know.
- 13:13And then I did it once on stage and it worked.
- 13:15And I was like, oh okay, alright, let's let's keep this
- 13:18doing. You know, I always, you know,
- 13:20the thing with comedies, you try to find the line and then you
- 13:23try to go over the line, but you don't want to go too far over
- 13:27because then, you know, it gets really bad really quick but for
- 13:32From what I've done so far from what I've said to people so far
- 13:35is that everyone's real kind of cool with it to appoint.
- 13:40And the thing is, like, you have to be really aware of where that
- 13:44point is once you get there because like, you can say
- 13:47something to someone and it just hits them the wrong way and it's
- 13:49like, okay, we're going to move on to something else now, but I
- 13:54don't do that all the time. I do a lot of like observational
- 13:57stuff. I started I actually started
- 14:00with storytelling. And I was trying to do stories
- 14:04because most Open Mic spots are about five minutes and it's it's
- 14:09quite difficult to tell a good story in five minutes, chill.
- 14:12And then my friend Hannah out in Barcelona, one day was just kind
- 14:17of like, hey Max. Have you ever just told jokes?
- 14:22And I was like, oh no. And she goes.
- 14:25Hmm. And I was like, okay and I don't
- 14:29think she definitely didn't mean.
- 14:30I've talked to her about it like she definitely I didn't mean it
- 14:32in a bad way but it was just kind of like, oh you've been
- 14:35doing this a lot longer than I am.
- 14:37And you seen like stories are good but you need jokes in the
- 14:41story. So now with a longer set you
- 14:45develop the through line to tell the story.
- 14:48Sure. But you work out the jokes
- 14:49before it. So now I do a lot of
- 14:51observational stuff based around a theme.
- 14:56So that when I have a longer look at 10, 15, 20 minutes set,
- 14:59I can tell the entire story. And it makes it's a lot.
- 15:03But yeah. 100%, Hannah did the right thing by just saying that
- 15:08one day, I just love how blunt everyone is in Europe.
- 15:11Like it's everywhere. I've been in Europe, but
- 15:14everyone's just that honest, you get honesty, but just blunt and
- 15:19it's like, there's no none of the dressing up, stuff, that
- 15:21Americans and English people do. There's none of that is just
- 15:24like now deal with it buddy. Something you should do.
- 15:29Hey, Have you ever considered doing comedy that when you're
- 15:35already doing it, when does The Comedy start, buddy?
- 15:39Exactly, exactly. Okay, you took in about times
- 15:45when you pick it, well, when you've dealt with people in the
- 15:47crowd heckles and stuff, talk us through some of the times when
- 15:50you've maybe messed up or when a interactions gone bad and what
- 15:56happened, how did you deal with it?
- 15:58Yeah. I think it was at like, it was I
- 16:02think it was at an open mic the other day, it's no reason.
- 16:08Damn, it happens, often. It's like the people, the people
- 16:15that come to open mics are other Comics.
- 16:18Oh, they're friends. And whoever just at the bar, so
- 16:24see, that's a different kind of show though because that's a,
- 16:27that's an audience of your peers.
- 16:29So then I'm a Is really tough. It's, it's open mics.
- 16:33I think are one of the hardest parts of Comedy because you're
- 16:38trying to make people who do what you do laughs course.
- 16:43Yes, Just Like Music. We're okay.
- 16:45When I was used to play regularly live, a lot of the
- 16:49time. Yeah, there wouldn't be anyone
- 16:50in the audience might be one or two people but mostly it's just
- 16:52you're playing two of the bands who don't care about your set,
- 16:54they just went to play and that's like it's because I
- 17:00People ask, you know, I talked about it a lot but it's like at
- 17:03an open mic up until I perform. I'm thinking about my set right.
- 17:09You know, I'll chit chat for a little bit but like I'm thinking
- 17:12about what I'm going to say on the stage so I'm just I don't
- 17:17listen very like sometimes, I'll catch more people on stage are
- 17:20saying, but I think 80% of the time I'm not listening and it's
- 17:24not like in a rude way. It's just like I have to pay
- 17:28attention to what I'm going to do or else I'm going to get up
- 17:31there and just eat it and it's not going to be good for me or
- 17:34anybody, you know. And it's I can't you know I
- 17:38don't speak for everybody but I from who I've talked to that's
- 17:41very similar, it's like once you've performed, it doesn't
- 17:45matter. You can listen, you can talk you
- 17:46do whatever you want. But right up until that moment,
- 17:49I think it's probably the same. Like, for if you have a role
- 17:51like before you act before you're seeing, is there, you're
- 17:55not. The same you you're paying
- 17:58attention to what you're going to say because you have to do
- 18:00and then after it's like, okay all done, here we go.
- 18:03Let's party. That's very true and it was all
- 18:06about the but I just didn't realize that comedians have to
- 18:08deal with that because I feel like that's even more brutal.
- 18:12Yes, at least. When like it's musicians,
- 18:14watching other musicians, you can still kind of appreciate it
- 18:17to some degree. Whereas I suppose her not to say
- 18:20you wouldn't be critical because you might be but I don't know.
- 18:22It just feels that the mediums different like I'd if I was a
- 18:25comedian. Ian on stage in front of a bunch
- 18:28of Comedians and I'm trying to make it.
- 18:29I would just feel like intense pressure and that situation will
- 18:32you do if it's exactly. It's like it's basically like if
- 18:36you're performing music in front of your you know all the music
- 18:42teachers you've ever had your parents, you know you're
- 18:45performing in front of your peers.
- 18:48So you want to do well because you want their approval and you
- 18:54also that you know for the Evil audience members that are there.
- 18:57You need them to also laugh but you can't focus on like one
- 19:02party too much because the jokes like the jokes I take it, it's a
- 19:06two comedians are probably a bit different than when I say to an
- 19:09audience member because it's like when you're speaking to a
- 19:13comedian you can kind of speak in shorthand looking code
- 19:16because they get what you're saying or what you're trying to
- 19:18do. Whereas like the joke I say to
- 19:20an audience member is going to be much more elaborate a bit
- 19:23more explained and broken down. I'm like that but yet back from
- 19:29the tangent the other day I was at a mic and it was just like it
- 19:34was just a drunk guy and he was just like he they were just
- 19:38talking the whole time and it's just like, you know, it's one of
- 19:42those things where it's like, they're at their regular bar.
- 19:45And I also happen to be there that night trying to do
- 19:48something You know think about like trying to incorporate
- 19:52though. Just be like I don't know.
- 19:54Like hey buddy. Let us in on the conversation.
- 19:59Yeah, you know I do want to make a phone.
- 20:01It's like that. You try to do that but then
- 20:02sometimes it just doesn't hit. It's like there are times where
- 20:07it's, you know, like if you pick up on what they're saying, you
- 20:10can join into the conversation or if like, you know, you would
- 20:12dress it, they realize what's happening and they get quieter
- 20:17participate or whatever. But then there's other times, I
- 20:19swear like you try to address it and it just doesn't work and
- 20:23then the room is kind of lost. It's just a little awkward.
- 20:26It's like okay, let's reel it back in on or try and see what
- 20:31happens but I don't know. I usually just like in
- 20:35circumstances where if I'm getting heckled, I think last
- 20:40week there was a very drunk guy at a show and the host came up
- 20:46and he was like, hey, he's been heckling everybody.
- 20:50You know, try to do something with it.
- 20:52Oh, I abandoned all material and just like, started talking to
- 20:56him and just roasted him. And the thing is, like once,
- 20:59because that's all he wants, he wants to get made fun of.
- 21:03He wants to be a part of the show.
- 21:04Yeah. And if you do that, then they
- 21:07usually get quiet after. Yeah, but there's also been
- 21:11times where you do that and then they're like, I'm part of the
- 21:15show now. And then the next comedian comes
- 21:17up and they just get worse and worse because they're Well, that
- 21:20guy did it. So why don't you do it?
- 21:21It's like, well, they're different comedians, they're
- 21:25different people, they do different stuff.
- 21:28So, okay, best performance ever? And why?
- 21:31And then worst performance ever and why I've had limit, how many
- 21:38have you done so far? I mean, like, in terms of like
- 21:45an actual booked showcase performance probably 20 or so,
- 21:51but then it for like an open mic like and just getting on stage
- 21:54and doing three to five minutes of material.
- 21:57Well, into the hundreds diam, okay.
- 22:00That's what But I think my best like book show was probably
- 22:10there's a show. So here in Buffalo there's a big
- 22:13old church and it's called aspirate Hall and it's the folk
- 22:19singer Ani, DiFranco Andy DeFranco.
- 22:23I believe she's also from Buffalo but we can factor that
- 22:25one the church I think was going to be demolished.
- 22:30Something was going to happen to the church and then I need I go
- 22:33bought it. So it's you know, it's coined
- 22:35the church that I need to Franco save in the so it's a big music
- 22:40venue like Demetri Martin was there.
- 22:42Vampire Weekend played, they're like big Bands.
- 22:44Boom. It's a huge deal because it's
- 22:45the sanctuary, but in the basement is a small probably 80
- 22:51to 100 capacity room called babe Ville.
- 22:55And that room just for some reason.
- 22:58I think like it's just a location.
- 22:59The way the show is booked everything about It.
- 23:03It's just every time it's a hot room it's a great show and I was
- 23:08on that show in July and it was the first show that my parents
- 23:12had ever seen me. Do it just was like it was 10
- 23:15minutes and it was just hot hot hot hot, hot hot the whole time
- 23:20and you get off and you're just like that was sick.
- 23:22I'm the Best comedian ever. Everything's great.
- 23:24And then you go to an open mic the next day and it's awful.
- 23:26But that was it was just such a good good show and it's like
- 23:32Comedian, you talk to him? Buffalo will say.
- 23:34That's the hottest room just because of everything, I don't
- 23:38know. It's just like other Perfect
- 23:39Storm situation every month. It's a great place.
- 23:45Yeah. How about your worst show ever?
- 23:47Where shall I don't know every day?
- 23:49No, no. I mean you seem like you seem
- 23:52very confident. You've done a lot of shows and
- 23:55yeah, seems like you're dealing well with like the more negative
- 23:58instances which you would need to be able to do.
- 24:00But well, that's the thing. It's like you're gonna, you're
- 24:04gonna do good and you're gonna do poorly and you just have to
- 24:08be okay with it and you have to like, you have to learn from the
- 24:12poor, you know, you have to learn.
- 24:13From the good to see what happened.
- 24:15But you also have to learn from the poor to see what happened.
- 24:21There was one. So, like, starting out in Spain,
- 24:26a lot of the shows a lot of the mics and a lot of the shows had
- 24:30big audiences of non Comics which was really surprising
- 24:34like. So I got used to performing in
- 24:36front of people and then I did a show there and no one showed up.
- 24:45So is my first time performing in front of nobody, which is
- 24:48not. An uncommon thing in like early
- 24:52years of Comedy. But when you're used to
- 24:54something and then all of a sudden it's not I didn't know
- 24:57how to handle the silence. So, yes.
- 25:00So like okay. The sound Engineers there.
- 25:03And then that's it, right? And the other Comics that are on
- 25:06the show. Yeah.
- 25:07Okay. Yeah.
- 25:08And like a battering of other people, but like it's real.
- 25:12Like it was, I think it's like a 40 capacity room seven people
- 25:17were in it. Well, this place is a bit like
- 25:21professional wrestling, isn't it?
- 25:22Like you just got to do your best if it's seventy thousand,
- 25:26seven. People like, you got what they
- 25:27should say? I was, you know, I was a handful
- 25:30of weeks into it and I just didn't, you know, I would say a
- 25:33joke and then nothing would happen or was just like laughs.
- 25:37And I was just like, okay, I don't know what.
- 25:41I don't know how to handle this. Let's just say like deal off at
- 25:44all. Like, how do you personally do
- 25:45with it now? Yes.
- 25:48You kind of like you got a knot coz that on that show
- 25:52specifically I got into my own head about it and I was like,
- 25:56you're not doing well, you're doing poorly, you're not going
- 25:59to be a good person. You're going to be terrible
- 26:00comedian like while I'm on stage and it's like, okay.
- 26:04And I ended up I think I was supposed to do eight minutes
- 26:09maybe and I did five and I just laughed.
- 26:11I was like, I've run out of jokes.
- 26:14Did you say that? It's not like, I'm sorry, I've
- 26:16got nothing. I was just say, all right.
- 26:18Thank you. And then I went off stage and
- 26:20like the house was, like, why did you finish so early?
- 26:22I was like, I don't have anything else like and I showed
- 26:25her my notes and I was like, this is every joke that I've
- 26:27written and I just it it was gone.
- 26:30Oh God. Oh my God.
- 26:35I think that's I think that's the one difference because like
- 26:39writing jokes writing music performing jokes performing
- 26:42music. There's a lot of similarities,
- 26:44but the thing is like, If I'm standing on stage with a guitar,
- 26:50unless I hit the wrong note, I'm not going to bomb.
- 26:55Yeah, no one can be there. You don't, you don't necessarily
- 26:58need a reaction to play a three minutes of Music.
- 27:00You're going to have three minutes music anyway, but my 10
- 27:04minutes of jokes is 15 minutes if they're laughing, or it's six
- 27:09minutes if no one's laughing. I said, think about what your
- 27:13your let's say art form. But yeah, when cut off from
- 27:17your, from your form of art like is so heavily dependent on
- 27:20audience reaction and participation May again sort of
- 27:24bring back to wrestling because I'm a wrestling.
- 27:26But what during the pandemic, there was like no fans and it
- 27:31was like the first time this has ever happened with the exception
- 27:33of Empty Arena matches which were done on purpose and it was
- 27:37just a really odd kind of spectacle to seal this stuff.
- 27:41Being performed that we would otherwise regularly seen.
- 27:43We almost like trained to have a response to it or it would
- 27:48train. Sorry.
- 27:48Train to hear the audience response to it.
- 27:51Exactly. This is nothing and then like
- 27:53there's other instances as well like I don't know if you've ever
- 27:56watched Friends without the laughter track on, it's just
- 28:00pain. It's like you start.
- 28:03You start to realize like how well conditioned we are and
- 28:06actually how some of the jokes aren't even that funny.
- 28:07They're just kind of but dead may fall on.
- 28:10That's the thing. That's like with yeah, like
- 28:12rustling. It's such a huge crowd
- 28:15participation thing because, like, football, basketball
- 28:18baseball can all be played with no one watching.
- 28:21Yeah, you just doing it but like Russell with the weird but like
- 28:26you know, if Kane does a suplex on somebody and then goes like
- 28:30that and it's silent. He just looks like a weirdo, you
- 28:34know? And that was that was the big
- 28:37thing with the pandemic because People started doing Zoom
- 28:42comedy. Yeah and it's for I never did
- 28:46one but from what I heard it was like he was you just say a joke
- 28:50and then you just see like 50 screens of smiles.
- 28:55Because they're all muted because you don't want to be
- 28:57distracting. That's so weird.
- 28:59There's a there's a really funny clip it's similar to the friends
- 29:04think. It's do you know Jimmy Fallon.
- 29:07Yeah. He when the pandemic started and
- 29:10he had to host a show from his house monologue in his like you
- 29:15know living room and it was really weird because he'll just
- 29:18do it and there's nothing. And you can see on his face, you
- 29:23know, because he's a stand-up, he's an improviser, you can like
- 29:26he knows he needs that laugh and you can kind of see him like
- 29:29working at out on his face. Like what how why, wait if you
- 29:33say be so funny as well. If he went like, hey, how about
- 29:35those Democrats say, right? It's just anybody nothing.
- 29:39Nothing. Speaking a little bit more
- 29:54online audiences and shows and stuff.
- 29:56Do you have any sort of funny Heckler stories either from your
- 29:59personal experiences or watching other shows of other comedians?
- 30:02Anything like that at all? Yeah, at theirs.
- 30:10This comedian is a big Jay oakerson, he's an American
- 30:13comedian and he's on the show called Legion of skanks.
- 30:16He has the bonfire, he's a, he's a big comedian, but his material
- 30:22is a lot of crowd work-based. Like he has a lot of material,
- 30:27but he's also just such a good crowd worker, you know, talking
- 30:31to the crowd doing stuff like that.
- 30:33And I saw him here in Buffalo, a few weeks back and just the way
- 30:39not necessarily like one thing in particular, but just watching
- 30:42him work was like, Look, I'm masterclass.
- 30:47You know, because he liked he because there's like different
- 30:50kinds of crowd work. That's a crowd work where you're
- 30:52just riffing immediately on what they're saying and then there's
- 30:56like guided proud work where, you know, you kind of say like
- 30:59oh is anybody had a breakup recently?
- 31:02Because in the back of his mind he has a joke about breakups
- 31:05that he's going to get to. But he's gonna guide the crowd
- 31:08work to that joke without that person.
- 31:11Knowing And like that kind of stuff.
- 31:14He does that a lot and he was telling me, he was telling the
- 31:16story about I'm butchering it, but I think it was about beating
- 31:22up cops, but like it's, it was like, could you beat up like a
- 31:27thousand male cops, or 1,000 female cops, or something like
- 31:30that? And the guy he was just talking
- 31:32to just some random dude in the audience about it.
- 31:34The guy the response is that they were getting.
- 31:37I think it's part of his new our.
- 31:39So if you're seeing this spoiler alert But it was just like, it
- 31:44was just such a funny thing because the guy in the audience
- 31:46obviously has never thought of that before and all of a sudden
- 31:51J's. Like so, do you think you could
- 31:52do it? Do you think you could beat up a
- 31:53thousand police officers with this, you know, situation.
- 31:56And the guys just like I think I mean, I think I could and he's
- 32:00like you think you could like I don't, it was just stuff like
- 32:06that and then This dude, Stavros halkias, he's a from New York
- 32:13and he's I saw him a couple weeks back and he does a lot of
- 32:17just kind of riffing crowd work and there was a moment where he
- 32:25was talking to a kid in the audience and he's like, you know
- 32:28like what do you do? And a guy said he designs pools
- 32:32and he was like, what do you mean?
- 32:34Like just you did an oval that's a pool, you know, like what do
- 32:37you mean you And pools and Isabel.
- 32:40I went to school for engineering and then he goes.
- 32:42And then you ended up with pools like what happened between point
- 32:46a and point B here. And he starts talking to the
- 32:49other people at the table because they're all his friends
- 32:52from college and then he asked the one guy.
- 32:56He's like, you know, what did you go to school for?
- 32:59And he just goes because just the timing of it, which is
- 33:02perfect and he goes, I'm an engineer and the room just
- 33:06erupts because every it's Like this kid wanted to be an
- 33:09engineer, but now he's designing pools.
- 33:11None of his friends are Engineers, but this one guy
- 33:13succeeded, he became the engineer of the group and
- 33:18Stavros was dying on stage, like laughing.
- 33:21And then he's just kind of like, are you really an engineer?
- 33:24And the guys like yeah. And he just goes, this is this
- 33:27feels like a Santa Claus moment for me where I want to believe.
- 33:30So I'm not going to ask any more questions because I want to just
- 33:33leave that that answer right there because I don't care if
- 33:38you're Engineer. The timing was perfect.
- 33:40It was beautiful. We're moving on to the next
- 33:42subject. It's just like that.
- 33:46It's just crowd, work crowd, work is so funny because like,
- 33:48it's the most legitimate form of the comedian.
- 33:52It's like, because my materials are me, my jokes are me, but the
- 33:56prepared, the thought out there design.
- 34:00But like if I just ask you a question and my answer is my
- 34:03answer, that's 100% just me speaking.
- 34:07This is something I've always wondered about comedians, as
- 34:09well as because like I know that a lot of it can be got
- 34:12constructed in the sense that Not real, maybe it's like
- 34:16someone I don't know. Talking shit about their wife
- 34:18but they don't actually really mean it.
- 34:20But you know, they just make stuff up or you know there's
- 34:22that then sometimes you get people that are like now this
- 34:25this could actually be true. I think they're just like angry
- 34:28at life so they just make it into comedy.
- 34:31That at we're all pretty angry know every.
- 34:36I will say it for me. And for most of my friends are
- 34:39all of my friends. Every joke we write has truth in
- 34:43it. It may be a semi embellished
- 34:47version. but the base of the joke is true, like, I have I
- 34:56have a joke where I say, I talked about how I eat Cap'n
- 35:03Crunch. Do you have Captain Crunch in
- 35:04the UK? Captain Crunch?
- 35:06I think I've heard of sugary cereal, everything sugary had
- 35:09but yeah but yeah we don't I think we might, we might maybe,
- 35:12maybe it's basically just a super sugary tiled cereal and
- 35:17the joke about that. I have four kids no one over ten
- 35:25should be eating it but no one should eat it.
- 35:27It's just a bowl of sugar. I don't understand.
- 35:29Sorry. Okay, tangent here serious
- 35:32cereals. Do nothing for you and it's bran
- 35:34flakes is just my you see him just eat a bowl of sugar but it
- 35:39really is bad. That's the the joke that I have
- 35:42about it is that I say like hi my name is Max, I'm 27 years
- 35:45old, my hair lines entering its early 40s.
- 35:50I'm at the stage of my life where the cashier at the grocery
- 35:52store is questioning at the food.
- 35:54I'm buying this for me or for a child.
- 35:56You know, is this guy really going to eat four boxes of
- 35:59Captain Crunch this Week. Okay, yeah and then I talk about
- 36:03how like I've been eating chemicals every day since I was
- 36:05a kid, I currently have prescription toothpaste because
- 36:08my teeth are so bad and the true 100% because $25 a month.
- 36:18And that's the thing is like when I say you're like, there's
- 36:22no way this guy actually eats sugary kids cereal every day and
- 36:26then I was I was out with some friends and we were talking
- 36:30about breakfast and I was like, yeah, I had like Cocoa Puffs and
- 36:33they were just like, are you serious?
- 36:35They're like, wait, that's a truce joke.
- 36:37Like everything. I was like a hundred percent but
- 36:40like that's what I do excuse wig because you like you realize
- 36:44when you're growing up that it doesn't actually give you
- 36:46anything. Nothing.
- 36:47Yeah, that for a while. I don't know when I started
- 36:50drinking, coffee may be College age.
- 36:53I don't know, but like I remember like not eating
- 36:56breakfast. I'm a weirdo.
- 36:58I don't need breakfast. 8 big lunch, that's how I.
- 37:00But anyway, anytime I would eat breakfast toast, kind of helped
- 37:07I guess but like yeah anytime was a bowl of cereal.
- 37:10Nothing just yeah nothing, no, nothing at all.
- 37:13It's just, this is the time filler.
- 37:16I mean, it's pretty boss to either night-night time for
- 37:19something, I don't know. I like doing that the thing
- 37:21coming home till 2:00 in the morning, and then a nice bowl of
- 37:24sugary cereal. It's also the least amount of
- 37:27effort possible as Just Bowl crap.
- 37:30Milk spoon. Done exactly do it.
- 37:35That's why I do it every day. Fuck you said.
- 37:38I love cereal, man. I love cereal.
- 37:40Especially that granola shit. I see did that stuff is like I
- 37:46don't know. If there was an equivalent of
- 37:49like hard drugs that were legal for like middle class people,
- 37:53that's what it would be. It's just yeah man, just hmm.
- 37:58Hey man, you got any of that Kashi.
- 38:01Special gay. Brother me some of that good
- 38:04Nola brother that's when he quit working.
- 38:06Let's go. I know you got it, don't lie to
- 38:08me so that box I see that calyx behind you.
- 38:12Kellogg's is oh my God, Kellogg's is no, not Kellogg's
- 38:17crunchy not, do you have Jeanette cornflakes in the u.s.
- 38:20I think we might call it something else in the that stuff
- 38:24is the most addictive stuff I've ever had in my life.
- 38:27Like eats. I don't know what they put in
- 38:28it. Probably Cragger, but it just is
- 38:32so good. Well yeah, obviously it's so
- 38:35good. Is it huh?
- 38:37And then I don't know that. I remember watching going on a
- 38:40deep dive into cereals because some YouTuber that I like that
- 38:45does videos on it where he just exposes like, how bad everything
- 38:48That you love is he did one on cereals and yeah, I already knew
- 38:52that they were bad for you, but like, I didn't know that like a
- 38:55lot of them, you know, the ones that Special K or whatever where
- 38:58they try to say. Like, oh yeah, you just part of
- 39:00a special diet, right? It's like, the, the point with
- 39:04that, is that, like, the only thing that's actually healthy
- 39:07about the diet. Having that cereal, is
- 39:10everything else that you eat, aside from the cereal.
- 39:14There's that. Show the picture of the cereal.
- 39:15Some fruit orange, juice tea water.
- 39:18Literally, you could say that about anything, you could say
- 39:20that about something unhealthy, like, oh, you could eat 15 candy
- 39:24bars a day as part of a healthy diet, right?
- 39:27And then anything, all of this stuff over here?
- 39:30Yeah, it's up. But you just conveniently leave
- 39:32that out lights. Like exactly.
- 39:33Yeah, it's cereal that that's helping you lose weight and stay
- 39:36trim, right? Definitely.
- 39:39Yeah, the head stuff. We wouldn't we wouldn't lie to,
- 39:41you never know. It's definitely not the rest of
- 39:44your awesome diet. It's the Special K.
- 39:47It should be it. Legal man, but it really should
- 39:49be. I'm sorry, I don't know how long
- 39:52a Serial tangent will go on for but yeah but I just it's just so
- 39:57much in it. It's so bad and I think the
- 40:00thing that's worse about it is there is marketed to kids,
- 40:03that's the dodgy about it, you know?
- 40:04And I remember growing up with that and he obviously like they
- 40:08plaster a bunch of stuff over the boxes to make it more
- 40:10appealing to kids and stuff and, and you have it.
- 40:14And it's and it's great. Don't get me wrong, but it
- 40:16doesn't give you anything. It literally It's just a bowl of
- 40:19sugar and ya know, and I am, I'm a private example of it, working
- 40:25into adulthood. There's no reason that I need
- 40:33Cocoa Puffs or Reese's Puffs or anything every day.
- 40:36But I do it and I loved it so far that like going into
- 40:40McDonald's and Order and like a child male.
- 40:43And I like to look at they look at you funny in this like look
- 40:46at me all you want motherfucker. I don't care.
- 40:48I want that. Yeah, well that's all you, man.
- 40:51It's a good fucking toy. I don't want a burger.
- 40:53I want for chicken nuggets. I want right now.
- 40:58Oh my God. Those chicken nuggets, man.
- 41:01I remember. I remember there was some kid
- 41:05that I knew when I was growing up, who would just like
- 41:06purposefully? Spend a good 10 minutes like
- 41:10ripping. All of the Well, what are the
- 41:15skin? Yeah, off the chicken nuggets
- 41:16before he'd eventually eat. If you okay.
- 41:19No. See, okay.
- 41:22Now, do we know where he is? I don't know, but he probably
- 41:24got to be a serial killer. I think the skin is the worst
- 41:34part. Did he put the skin somewhere
- 41:37else or deleted eventually? No, you just didn't eat it.
- 41:40So, that's the right that's part.
- 41:42That is actually the best part. What's wrong with it chicken
- 41:45nugget? He's not okay, he's somewhere
- 41:55right now. He's probably just sitting in
- 41:59KFC. Staring into the abyss skin and
- 42:04getting chicken. All right, and he's here again.
- 42:10He skidded the chickens guys gonna chickens, okay, I'll just
- 42:13I'll leave you be there. Okay, you okay, sir, leave me
- 42:17alone. Let's get in the chicken.
- 42:20This is my me time. This is what I do.
- 42:27This is what I do for fun. I'm not talking to you.
- 42:46What is good comedy in your opinion?
- 42:49Somebody is killing chickens in a comedy.
- 42:55Anything I think. I mean, like anything that's
- 42:58funny. Anything that makes me laugh.
- 43:01What if it's such a dummy? I've seen so much comedy That if
- 43:11it's even if it's just a dumb little one liner and it makes me
- 43:16laugh rate. If it's just if you like I don't
- 43:20know anything funny. Like Mitch Hedberg, he's an
- 43:23amazing comedian. He's passed away but he's an
- 43:25amazing comedian. He had a joke about Donut
- 43:30receipts. He's like the joke is basically,
- 43:33like, why do I need a receipt for this donut?
- 43:35I'm never going to need to prove that I ate a donut and it's
- 43:39like, that's so dumb but it's funny.
- 43:42Like look at my stomach. Like exactly.
- 43:46There's the proof right here, right here.
- 43:48Here's the like you're never going to do that and it's just
- 43:51such a dumb little idea, but it's so funny.
- 43:56I'll comedian self-employed. I think technically, yeah, it
- 44:03was a lot of people. There's In the States.
- 44:07Because, you know, we have amazing taxes.
- 44:10There's fun little things. Shout out to the IRS, some nice,
- 44:19hm, Revenue & customs, and looking at you, they take your
- 44:23money. You basically register yourself
- 44:26as a business and then you register a business and you
- 44:29employ yourself through the business.
- 44:31I think that's what a lot of people do, so then also like,
- 44:35yeah, it's kind of weird and then also, but I think it helps
- 44:37like four If the comedian gets into like screenwriting or gets
- 44:43into putting like producing other projects.
- 44:47I think the business helps with that for like in terms of moving
- 44:51money around to allocate it and things like that.
- 44:54But yeah, we're I think we're all set.
- 44:57I think everybody self-employed scheme of it.
- 45:01So what you'll goes in comedy, what were you trying to do?
- 45:03Like G, is it? You're trying to get like a
- 45:05Netflix, special, you battling for Dave, Chappelle's position.
- 45:10Nor you want to try to do state your intentions, go to what you
- 45:20want to do. Pay rent.
- 45:22Hey dude if that's if that's the goal, I understand, man.
- 45:26Like I'd that's what I'm trying to do.
- 45:27I'm putting bar shifts at the moment, doing everything just to
- 45:30make the money rolling but it's not world.
- 45:33Yeah, it's one of those things where it's like, it's good to
- 45:37have those goals. Definitely have the goal of
- 45:41wanting to put out and be known like be you know, have specials
- 45:45have all that. So like in terms of a career I'd
- 45:49like to be a working comedian. I'd like to be able to support
- 45:52myself while doing comedy. If that I mean like doing
- 45:57stand-up or doing writing gigs or doing anything, anything
- 46:01comedy related, You know, I'm a stand-up first, I'm going to do
- 46:06the other stuff also, but any capacity of being involved with
- 46:10comedy is what I would like to have as my career.
- 46:16But then also like I have goals in terms of just the jokes that
- 46:21I'm doing. I kind of like when I set out I
- 46:25wanted to have at least a half hour of new material every year.
- 46:32To start because I'm not doing that many shows.
- 46:35So it is hard to write like a fool because I day 10 like yeah.
- 46:39I'm gonna have an hour by the end of the year and then I
- 46:42actually learned how hard it is to right now our when you're not
- 46:47because we don't comedians work in increments of five minutes.
- 46:50Hmm Eve, right? Five minutes of jokes five
- 46:52minutes or five minutes of jokes and then you also have to
- 46:55whittle down those five minutes of jokes to be good.
- 46:57Five minutes of jokes. So it takes you have to dedicate
- 47:01a lot of time to get five minutes of material.
- 47:04So just starting out. If I'm not touring, I'm not
- 47:09doing you know, club shows every weekend 30 minutes a pretty
- 47:13realistic number and so and then once I get you know, on the road
- 47:20more I started more show doing more time.
- 47:23It becomes a bit easier to write the bigger the length of your
- 47:28sets. Because your Just doing more
- 47:30comedy more times a week. She had more changes to, right?
- 47:36What would you say are the most challenging aspects of being a
- 47:40comedian and comedy? The most challenging aspects.
- 47:49Just that doing it because it's so brutal.
- 47:57It's a very brutal industry because you're it's, you know,
- 48:01similar to being a musician. There's a lot of years where
- 48:05you're not doing anything. Hmm you know you're grinding
- 48:09you're working really hard probably similar to being an
- 48:13actor as well. Like there's a lot of time spent
- 48:16to get to that one thing. And not many people know about
- 48:20that time that you're working, you know, and then all of a
- 48:24sudden from that point you everybody's aware of what you're
- 48:28doing. But to get to this point is so
- 48:31much stuff very like whenever go come.
- 48:36Please so easy. It's so easy to get tutored by
- 48:39it because it's like you're doing five nights a week, two
- 48:42rooms of three people and it's like, oh, is this really a
- 48:47viable? Idea.
- 48:49And the big answer is no, but the fun answer is yes, and it's
- 48:56just, like, just not quitting, just keeping it.
- 48:59Keeping keeping keeping, and hopefully, it all works out at
- 49:02some point. You see, ya say exactly how I
- 49:07feel like, I feel this way all the time with acting my podcast,
- 49:12my content, creating online, you name it, and it's dislike.
- 49:18Sometimes I like to like, if I'm feeling more positive about
- 49:21things, I like to sit down and imagine that like these are the
- 49:23stories. I'll tell one day sitting on a
- 49:25talk show. And but I guess there was a time
- 49:27when I was doing this this this and this and this and then
- 49:30became a star and, you know, but I lived a normal life and it was
- 49:34hard and these were my struggles.
- 49:36I like to like imagine that sometimes so I don't feel quite
- 49:39so pathetic and failure. Just like this.
- 49:44Like to imagine like all like being on the on the Oscar poll.
- 49:48Maybe like, I'd like to thank me myself and me.
- 49:53No one else. Having a good day?
- 49:54I did it all myself motherfucker.
- 49:56No, yeah, I miss ya. You got it.
- 50:00Yeah, you got to keep going. You got to keep trying and
- 50:04that's how you get better, isn't it?
- 50:06You know, I mean when it comes to the podcast, I thought by now
- 50:09it's been two years. I thought I'd be like sponsored.
- 50:12I'd have like millions of fault. Why I didn't think.
- 50:15I thought I'd at least have like maybe a couple hundred people
- 50:17listening. And the reality is it hasn't
- 50:19gone that way, but there have been positives that have
- 50:22happened as well. Like, I get to talk to amazing
- 50:25people from around the world, such as yourself and learn about
- 50:28things. I know nothing about like I have
- 50:29a very superficial knowledge of Comedy but they talking to
- 50:32yourself. I could learn a lot more about
- 50:34it from your personal lens. And one thing that I really like
- 50:38doing with this show is kind of not only exploring a person's
- 50:42life but kind of gaming knowledge and insight from that
- 50:45person and then sharing that with the world you know in
- 50:48reform. Of content and that's something
- 50:50I really love about that. But it's what I found with
- 50:53acting which I guess maybe similar to Comedy is as you say,
- 50:57you don't always get work, sometimes you get a lot work,
- 50:59sometimes you get nothing. And that makes me personally.
- 51:03Appreciate it a lot more. One thing I can relate to you.
- 51:06On with regards to just the numbers wise is I do regular
- 51:11live streams on Tick-Tock and so does it makes me laugh because I
- 51:16generally get about Five people. If I'm lucky, maybe sometimes
- 51:21it's more sometimes less, what happens actually which is quite
- 51:25funny. Is that there's a lot of people
- 51:26following me that regularly check in but they don't all
- 51:29check in at the same time because yeah, okay.
- 51:31Busy. They got lives, whatever right
- 51:33and and I love them all their wonderful awesome people.
- 51:38But they're not always always around and sometimes I just
- 51:40check in the be no one there or they be like two people there
- 51:43and I sometimes someone to come in and be like Did you really
- 51:46good? Why don't why don't you have
- 51:47more people here? And I'm not Anna questions out
- 51:51of, fuck. You tell me, man.
- 51:53What we did wrong. Why not?
- 51:56Cause I've had people say that like, oh, this shows doing
- 51:59really well, I love what you're doing.
- 52:00I'm like, thank you. So could tell your friends, tell
- 52:03other people, let's go, come on. Do you know what one thing I've
- 52:05actually started doing? I don't know if you do this but
- 52:08like I used to have a rule that I know I'm still I go back and
- 52:13forth on this generally speaking.
- 52:15Don't tell people in real life about everything that I'm doing
- 52:18because I don't want to be like that guy that's like, hey, come
- 52:20check me out. Check out everything I'm doing
- 52:22yet. But at the same time, it's like
- 52:25you got to promote yourself. Exactly.
- 52:28And so now every once in a while I try to do that and I feel
- 52:31awkward about it, I'm still not quite okay with it but I've
- 52:36started doing it a bit more. Like do you do that?
- 52:38Do you tell people real life? Like, hey, I'm a comedian.
- 52:41Come see a show sometime No, that's lame man.
- 52:48No, no. I do do it.
- 52:50I do that. I from what I if it's somebody
- 52:54like if it's within my friend group or my acquaintances, I'll
- 52:58for sure. Tell him like if I have a show
- 53:00coming up and stuff like that but there's been moments like
- 53:04when I was down in Austin, I was in Austin, Texas for about a
- 53:08week just doing stuff for comedy and almost every Uber I got into
- 53:14I'm a huge fan and you can tell me that this is American and
- 53:19mean and everything. But I'm a huge fan of not
- 53:23talking. In an Uber, if the driver does
- 53:26not talk to me, they get five stars and a great tip.
- 53:30If they talk to me I immediately hate them.
- 53:34I don't know what it is about me.
- 53:36I think like just being like the New York Taxi.
- 53:41Every New York Yellow Cab I ever took.
- 53:43They Ever talked to me, and I took those a lot before I got
- 53:46into Ubers, so that's what I was used to and what I became
- 53:50accustomed to. And then Uber came out and it's
- 53:53like, oh, you're driving with a friend, like, know hacha get me
- 53:58to the destination. I don't want to talk to you.
- 54:01What's your worst having to listen to an Uber driver story?
- 54:04What it's the, the, and this is the thing, it's every time I get
- 54:06into an Uber, and they talk to me, they say, what do you do?
- 54:10And it's like, okay, I can either tell them about My day
- 54:14job, that's currently paying the bills, but they're not going to,
- 54:18you know, then that's going to open up more lines of questions.
- 54:22Or I can tell them I'm a comic and that could go one of two
- 54:26ways they say cool? Or they say, tell me a joke and
- 54:30it's almost always tell me a joke and I hate it because it
- 54:35was just purposely tell us shit, Joe.
- 55:14Helen States aren't going to work at a context here.
- 55:16Like, oh my God, what's that stupid?
- 55:21Cupid G-rated joke. You've sparked my curiosity?
- 55:25Yeah. What do you call an alligator?
- 55:27And a vest. I don't know.
- 55:31What do you call an alligator in diverse and investigator?
- 55:35What do you call an alligator? That's also a detective.
- 55:38I don't know, what do you call a medicated?
- 55:40That's also a detective and investigator.
- 55:44What do you call an ass here? Who participates in the second
- 55:47alligator jokes. Man, why you so obsessed about
- 55:52that participates in the stock market?
- 55:54Other than what a good businessman.
- 55:57Just kidding investigator. I usually and that's usually the
- 56:03reaction that I get from that joke.
- 56:06It's just like decision. To be fair, I I feel with you on
- 56:19that one. I've I've seen that happen.
- 56:22I've heard that happen so many times to those Troopers Juke and
- 56:25you fuck. I've had that I've because I
- 56:26don't I don't consider myself a comedian or funny at all, but
- 56:30I've sometimes stated that I do comedic stuff online like, you
- 56:35know, tick-tocks all videos whatever right.
- 56:38But I'm not necessarily like, yeah, because you get people set
- 56:40up or is this supposed to be funny?
- 56:41And it's that well, maybe some people find it funny, maybe not,
- 56:44it's all subjective, you know. The time, I just do it because
- 56:47it makes me laugh. And I'm laughing at my jokes.
- 56:52Yeah, hi. I'm so funny.
- 56:57That's it. Yeah, to me, that's like, that's
- 57:01I think Jimmy Carr talks about it in one of his or Jimmy Carr.
- 57:05Ricky Gervais is one of the, two of them talk about it in their
- 57:07specials. Where comedy is, you know?
- 57:12Oh yeah, yeah, I think it was, I think it was Jimmy Carr solid
- 57:15gold greatest hits that special. He talks because Jimmy Carr, you
- 57:19know, he opens up the room to heckling for like a couple
- 57:21minutes just to get it over with.
- 57:23And somebody said, you know, when do the joke start and he's
- 57:26You know, that's the important thing is like, when do the joke
- 57:29start because for some of the people that jokes have been this
- 57:31entire time, but if you didn't like those jokes in the jokes,
- 57:33haven't started yet and that's the thing.
- 57:35It's a comedy. So subjective that like, you
- 57:38know, you might find it funny and he might not but he might
- 57:40find it funny and you might not and that's fine somewhere in
- 57:44there. The jokes are still funny and it
- 57:46just kind of you got to find what you find funny, which
- 57:49probably isn't in the back of an Uber.
- 57:52So that's all you Uber drivers. Listen, they let me ride in
- 57:57peace to do. I agree with that, too.
- 58:00I don't it depends what mood I'm in, but sometimes, I don't want
- 58:05to talk and then they start talking to me.
- 58:07And I'm like, hmm! Yeah, yeah!
- 58:12Oh, really! Uh-huh!
- 58:14Yeah, yeah. I was in, I was in, I was in New
- 58:18York, the other week and it was, yeah, it was last week because
- 58:21the queen guy, It was the day the queen died.
- 58:23I was in New York and I was in a new birth.
- 58:26She shouldn't have lost him. I was just like, oh yeah, it's
- 58:30long. It's like just kidding, calm
- 58:33down. It was a really weird.
- 58:34It was a weird situation because like I got on the plane the
- 58:37queen was alive and I got off the plane and suddenly the queen
- 58:40was dead. I was like I guess I think I
- 58:41missed something there. I was at jobs walking in the bar
- 58:44is really weird. So there was a football match
- 58:48on. Yeah, that was loan later in the
- 58:50day and it was loaded. Banished fans.
- 58:53So the bar was smashed and I was just kind of like and then
- 58:56everyone left, we were tidying up.
- 58:58And then this guy older gentleman came over to the bar
- 59:02and just looked at because there's like a TV behind us on
- 59:05the wall. Yeah.
- 59:06And it's just like oh and I was like what?
- 59:10Copy true and then look at the TV and then Queen is started as
- 59:14I thought. Wow.
- 59:15And I wasn't like sad or anything like that.
- 59:18I'm not like I mean I'm sad in the sense that like he's like,
- 59:21oh that's Unfortunate. You know that's yeah, whatever.
- 59:24I'm not particularly a big fan of the monarchy or anything but
- 59:27I was just that are but the bigger thing that I felt was It
- 59:30was kind of weird like surreal a bit like I'm not by any means
- 59:36comparing a bit like the same feeling of like when 9/11
- 59:39happened or something. Yeah, that you remember, where
- 59:41you were or you remember the feeling like this is odd?
- 59:44It was like oh okay that's weird.
- 59:47Yeah. I think that's like from what a
- 59:49lot of the Americans. Hmm.
- 59:52Because a Lot of Americans, follow the monarchy chick, they
- 59:55follow the Kardashians. Like, it's just kind of like,
- 59:57which I don't get it, I do not, I don't understand.
- 59:59Because people ask me all the time, particularly I got, I got
- 1:00:02actually got a bunch of messages from people like, oh my
- 1:00:04condolences, and I was just like, I'm not related to them,
- 1:00:08and that's not my grandmother know, like, it's sad, don't get
- 1:00:11me wrong but I without sounding harsh, like it doesn't affect my
- 1:00:15life. Like, I think that's the thing
- 1:00:18was, like, people in America. It's at?
- 1:00:20Yeah. It's a very simple.
- 1:00:21Yeah, it is. It is that Real moment of like,
- 1:00:23oh, because it's one of those things that you don't think
- 1:00:25about, you don't think about the clean dying.
- 1:00:28And the thing, what, you know, she was what the Queen's for 75
- 1:00:30years. Yeah, yeah, it's odd like
- 1:00:34there's people that were born and died with only her as the
- 1:00:37queen. Hmm.
- 1:00:41I think that the weirdest thing for me, Is like how now there's
- 1:00:46going to be a king and he's King Charles, the Third as well,
- 1:00:50which is kind of weird. I like everything changes.
- 1:00:55The money changes stamps. Change iconography changes.
- 1:00:59I saw something the other day that said that like anything
- 1:01:03that has the Royal seal because we have this thing in the UK's.
- 1:01:05It's kind of weird. We're certain products
- 1:01:09particularly ones that have been around for a long time.
- 1:01:10So like Heinz you make yeah ketchup and beans or whatever
- 1:01:13saw that. I saw that they have to change
- 1:01:17the Royal seal that they have which I never really got that.
- 1:01:21I feel I feel like it's kind of like A stamp of approval.
- 1:01:23Like yes it's like beans endorsed by the queen, you know,
- 1:01:27for this kind of a little bit, it's always that.
- 1:01:30Yeah it's like but I think it also means that are supplied to
- 1:01:35the royal family in some instances as well.
- 1:01:38I know that that's the case with maybe Tate Lyle and waitrose the
- 1:01:45supermarket here in the UK. I think there's something to
- 1:01:49that but yeah just it's going to be weird.
- 1:01:53How everything's going to change.
- 1:01:54Also, there's a lot of people talking about how it might
- 1:01:56affect politics because little known fact, there are still some
- 1:02:00powers that the monarchy actually has in relation to
- 1:02:04politics. So, for example, the monarchy
- 1:02:07has the ability to like start and stop Parliament.
- 1:02:11And for instance, if a particular Parliament is
- 1:02:15regarded as like corrupt or unfit for office, the king or
- 1:02:18queen can actually interject in that situation and force.
- 1:02:22Them to form a new government which I was on.
- 1:02:25And also any major law that's passed has to be signed off by
- 1:02:28the king or queen. Yeah.
- 1:02:31See that's like my parents, you know?
- 1:02:33Because I lived in Spain, I had British friends.
- 1:02:35So I to my parents, I'm the leading Authority on anything
- 1:02:38Europe, I really like so like what is the monarchy do?
- 1:02:41And I was like, I don't know, I don't care, man is King but I
- 1:02:47cannot tell you about those guys.
- 1:02:50It's yeah, I just it was like, but the Uber driver was we got
- 1:02:57in the car and he's like did you see the queen died?
- 1:02:59I was like, oh that's that's a triple going to have, okay?
- 1:03:04And then it was a 15 minute trip.
- 1:03:07Thankfully talking about talked about the monarchy the whole
- 1:03:10time and I was like, yeah, it's a crazy thing I guess I don't
- 1:03:15know. It was like, why do you know so
- 1:03:17much about this gonna look in a way?
- 1:03:19It's kind of weird. The two Americans to be talking
- 1:03:21about it, but not nothing against that or anything.
- 1:03:23It's just, it's just odd. I think it was, it's one of
- 1:03:26those things where like it was either.
- 1:03:29Okay. We could talk about nothing.
- 1:03:31We could talk about where I'm from or we could talk about the
- 1:03:35Hot Topic of the news today. And I think that was the hottest
- 1:03:38topic. Is he had on, he had on like the
- 1:03:43CNN livestream and like so he would just been listening to it
- 1:03:47the entire day and I was just like, yeah, let's dive into this
- 1:03:51one, here we go. To be fair, I I'm Gillian.
- 1:03:54I'm and when the Amber Heard troll was on, I wish I just had
- 1:03:57that shit on every single day because it was just meme
- 1:04:00Central. And I've learned more about the
- 1:04:04royal family in the last week. Dude, it is, it is interesting.
- 1:04:10There are interesting aspects to it but I'm from the USA.
- 1:04:14It they don't want in the he told them to get out. 200, 200
- 1:04:21years ago, we fought the British and we one God and Glory.
- 1:04:27Yeah, he's kind of weird innit. Like I remember when I was a
- 1:04:30kid, there was a an Air Force Base across the road from where
- 1:04:35we lived. I was awesome because I was when
- 1:04:38I grew up in the 90s to early 2000s and we didn't really have
- 1:04:44Halloween here. It wasn't a thing, but was it
- 1:04:46was big in the states. And so the Americans kind of
- 1:04:51just like introduced us to that and it was awesome.
- 1:04:53Obviously, as a kid like, hey, free sweets, get to dress up as
- 1:04:56I could ghost or whatever as fun.
- 1:04:59And also, I remember that they would celebrate the Fourth of
- 1:05:02July in this like Park. That was right next to where the
- 1:05:06base was. Oh, yeah.
- 1:05:09And it was brilliant. Ain't like, I got to try like
- 1:05:11corn dogs for the first time disgusting.
- 1:05:13I got to trip. Yeah, I've got another thing
- 1:05:15about that in a second, as well. Actually, I just had it.
- 1:05:18Now, I remember going to a wrestling show.
- 1:05:20I think it's like Smackdown, and that 2005.
- 1:05:22Yeah. Ever in London, and I remember
- 1:05:25queuing up outside and there was just the deathly stench of corn
- 1:05:29dogs. It was, I was I, what is that?
- 1:05:31Someone said, oh, it's condos and I was like, like, I actually
- 1:05:34felt like throwing up. There was just so much.
- 1:05:38I don't know, hydrogenated fats, whatever.
- 1:05:40You know, like a pancake wrapped around a hot dog, bro.
- 1:05:44That's the name. I like pancakes.
- 1:05:47I don't like corn dogs. That's just sickly.
- 1:05:51They're nice if they're cooked right there.
- 1:05:52Good. Oh, and What's the diff?
- 1:05:56That's basically a sausage roll in it.
- 1:05:59No, cuz sausage roll is amazing. Corn dog is disgusting.
- 1:06:05I would die on this hill. I don't care because I love him,
- 1:06:09and that's damn it. I'm right.
- 1:06:14And you're wrong. And that's it.
- 1:06:15I'll start from the beginning part of the world.
- 1:06:17So I don't know if that's the leading Authority on food,
- 1:06:20critics, but anyway wasn't. So, yeah, they would do the, the
- 1:06:25Fourth of July celebrations. And, yeah, I was just like, Yay,
- 1:06:28celebrate right fireworks and all that.
- 1:06:29And then, let's got older. I kind of realized how weird it
- 1:06:32is for America, celebrate Fourth of July, In the UK, which was
- 1:06:37that the whole point of it is you celebrate independence from
- 1:06:40the UK? Yeah, but then, I don't notice
- 1:06:43is changed. Isn't it like it's ancient
- 1:06:45history. Ha ha.
- 1:06:47But it's yeah it's weird and the relationship our nation's have
- 1:06:51is odd. Like I remember joking about it
- 1:06:54during the Blair and Bush years about how they would call it the
- 1:06:57special relationship and it always sounded like a bit of an
- 1:07:00underhanded like homosexual relationships.
- 1:07:02Here are bearing blaring Bush. It's Like oh yes, the way I
- 1:07:07always saw it is that America's like imagine, you know, you and
- 1:07:10the playground right. I think I saw some comedians say
- 1:07:13this is well where it's like America is like I'm gonna kick
- 1:07:16your ass and then Britain is behind going.
- 1:07:19Yeah we're just we just the guy that goes
- 1:07:34Isn't afraid to be the bad guy but the UK was really cool with
- 1:07:39putting America, the bad guy and just kind of hanging out at the
- 1:07:43back will because we're the bad guys too.
- 1:07:46We tried to present ourselves as the good guys but know if you
- 1:07:48look go back and look into British history, we are
- 1:07:49definitely not the good guys just just saying that just so,
- 1:07:53you know, definitely that I try not to think about.
- 1:07:57I tried to just live in the now and be like, do you know what?
- 1:07:59I'm just going to be a good person and and try and do that.
- 1:08:02Like not try and focus on the horrid.
- 1:08:04History. But then again, every every
- 1:08:07country has this a good and a bad side.
- 1:08:09It's like you just have to try not to focus on the bad stuff as
- 1:08:14much as you can. But it is kind of horrified that
- 1:08:17I remember. I remember going to Ireland, for
- 1:08:18example and learning about how much they hate.
- 1:08:21Churchill. Yeah.
- 1:08:23And I was just kind of like thrown by that and then I read
- 1:08:26into it and learn about other, okay?
- 1:08:28And I was just like stuff, I didn't know like, and again,
- 1:08:30this is alleged. I don't know if there's actually
- 1:08:32happened, but there's a story that goes around that says that
- 1:08:34He had some involvement with fighting the IRA and it led to
- 1:08:40unfortunately, like some people but innocent bystanders being
- 1:08:46killed. I was like, I never knew about
- 1:08:48this, but of course you wouldn't be taught about it in in
- 1:08:51England. Okay.
- 1:08:52Yeah, right. Yeah.
- 1:08:53And it's just interesting, you know, that was the first time I
- 1:08:57went to Europe, I did, I think, probably two weeks a week and a
- 1:09:02half, two weeks in Ireland and Northern Ireland and like going
- 1:09:06from, I went Dublin Galway cork Belfast and it was just like
- 1:09:11Dublin, you know, being a major city, it's pretty mixed in terms
- 1:09:14of political views and things like that, but then going to
- 1:09:17Galway was like, oh, this is like going away and cork like oh
- 1:09:21this is actually the real part of Irish politics.
- 1:09:25Like this is how they feel and then getting up to Belfast and
- 1:09:28just seeing the juxtaposition between The two different ideas
- 1:09:34of like, you know, who's who was in the right who's in the wrong
- 1:09:39and then doing in Belfast, they have the Black Cab tour to give
- 1:09:44you a tour of everywhere, the troubles were happening.
- 1:09:47And like to go to the peace wall, things like that, and it
- 1:09:50was cool to hear that side. But then a friend of my uncles
- 1:09:54as from Belfast and he took me on a tour up to the Giant's
- 1:09:58Causeway and things like that. But I, you know, I asked him.
- 1:10:00I was like you're from. Here you go.
- 1:10:01Grew up in this. What do you think about it?
- 1:10:03And a lot of he grew up in Northern Belfast.
- 1:10:07So I think that's the Protestant side.
- 1:10:10I could be wrong but he grew up in the more, the knock Catholic
- 1:10:14sorry of the city and telling talking about that was very
- 1:10:17interesting to hear because like they would, they were talking
- 1:10:19about the same story from two different sides, you know?
- 1:10:25And then even going to the museums in Belfast and like the
- 1:10:27Museum's on the Northern side of the city said this stuff and the
- 1:10:30Museum's on the side. Side of the city said the same
- 1:10:33thing, but just they flipped around who was at fault and it's
- 1:10:36like, we don't really have that in America too much.
- 1:10:39I think we do like with the Civil War but not to the same
- 1:10:42extent of like such dramatic differences between who's right?
- 1:10:46Who's wrong, or why it happened. Why it didn't happen this way
- 1:10:49things like that? I don't know.
- 1:10:51I mean you'll political situation is interesting
- 1:10:56because, like, here in the UK we have Similar, but like for
- 1:11:00instance, conservatives are the UK equivalent of the Republicans
- 1:11:04but very different. Like, I think even Trump when he
- 1:11:07was in office stated the sort of mockingly about the
- 1:11:11conservatives. He said bar there too liberal
- 1:11:13and he's right, technically, he's right by comparison.
- 1:11:17They are very much so yeah. Okay, yeah so far like in the
- 1:11:21today since we do but I mean like in the historical sense
- 1:11:24like we don't have Oka city with a wall running through it.
- 1:11:28Buck, you know, because of things that happened, like yeah,
- 1:11:32hundred percent of the Republicans or the Democrats in
- 1:11:34this country are absolutely absurd.
- 1:11:39It's just like, it's like, come on guys, you got him everywhere,
- 1:11:42though, we have it here in the UK, we had a party called you
- 1:11:47Kip, who were basically X Tory's that were not happy.
- 1:11:53So then they made their own it all.
- 1:11:56Party. I'm not gonna go into details
- 1:11:57about it, you can look it up online.
- 1:11:59You first, it's interesting. Why is that a really I think
- 1:12:03jamali Maddox the UK comedian? He has a show on Vice called
- 1:12:06hate thy neighbor and they did stuff with you kept and it was
- 1:12:11really it's really interesting but that's also like in terms of
- 1:12:15pollen, speaking of politics and tying it a little bit to Comedy,
- 1:12:19it's a weird thing to do because you don't you don't want to be
- 1:12:24labeled as One side, you want to be able to talk about both
- 1:12:28sides, but you say that but then like, well, I suppose it's bit
- 1:12:33different. Let's go because give the
- 1:12:34example of like late night TV show hosts, who are also
- 1:12:37comedians sometimes and they'll often pick a side and then just
- 1:12:40spend that they're opening monologue.
- 1:12:43Just like part of it just bashing a particular party or
- 1:12:45whatever and it's I don't like I have I've had a lot of people
- 1:12:49speak about that and say that they would rather that wouldn't
- 1:12:51exist in a show like that. I tend to agree like I think
- 1:12:53those sorts of shows should Ideally be free from politics
- 1:12:57because he feels very like, I don't know.
- 1:13:00Like it's like telling people off.
- 1:13:03It's like very like mmm. And it's like, it's supposed to
- 1:13:06be like a light-hearted talk show.
- 1:13:08And then there's, you know, and also, it will go from like a
- 1:13:10rant about, let's say, like Trump or Biden wherever and then
- 1:13:13it will go into like some skit. They did that's like supposed to
- 1:13:18be fun and it's like I'm related to that would be totally
- 1:13:21different. Yeah.
- 1:13:22And it's just like, this is a weird juxtaposition.
- 1:13:25Is this is that The same show. Like I think, I think the Trump
- 1:13:30years of America, good time for comedy, right?
- 1:13:35I'm down with you but also for, like, the shows for like The
- 1:13:38Daily Show and, like, Last Week Tonight, with John Oliver and
- 1:13:43Real Time with Bill Maher, those shows, I think really started to
- 1:13:49pick a side during the Trump ears, because the stuff Trump
- 1:13:53was doing was so out. Outlandish that if you even
- 1:13:57sided with him a little bit, it was crazy.
- 1:14:00Yeah, you know, it was media death, if you were just like,
- 1:14:04yeah, you know what, he had a good point there like you didn't
- 1:14:07want to do that at all. So, I think I think prior to
- 1:14:11Trump, like The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, Amy Trevor Noah has
- 1:14:16an excellent host of The Daily Show, but I think prior to
- 1:14:19Trump, those shows did a bit better at flipping between the
- 1:14:24different sides and like talk. about it, but I think just good
- 1:14:28old Donnie came in and made everything just such like,
- 1:14:34cut-and-dry, you have to be this, or you have to be this
- 1:14:36situation. How do you feel about bringing
- 1:14:40politics into comedy about your personal?
- 1:14:42But if you try and do it sometimes I do, I do. it's, you
- 1:14:49have to be very delicate because you don't know, Like that.
- 1:14:57So, for example, like I have a joke about the vaccine.
- 1:15:02Okay. And I, you know, I'm a my have a
- 1:15:05lot of degrees. I will have 2 degrees 52 degrees
- 1:15:07in science. I'm a scientific person.
- 1:15:09So, like the vaccine the entire time, like vaccines, in general,
- 1:15:14makes sense to me, just because I've been exposed to science for
- 1:15:17so long that like, You know, vaccines they just I understand
- 1:15:22the concept, I understand the process and all that, but I also
- 1:15:25know that like the literacy rate in the u.s. is not very high.
- 1:15:30It's a fourth grade. The average reading level in the
- 1:15:32u.s. is of u.s. 4th grade reading level.
- 1:15:35So there's a lot of people Who just don't have access to the
- 1:15:40education that I did, which plays into why people don't
- 1:15:46like, don't or say they don't like, because they don't
- 1:15:49understand different scientific things that are happening,
- 1:15:53right? So you have to really be there's
- 1:15:58a lot. If you're going to talk about
- 1:16:00politics in your set, you have to do a lot of background
- 1:16:04research, mine. Because you can just there's
- 1:16:07some people, you could just go out and start making fun of
- 1:16:10them, but that's not really fun for anybody.
- 1:16:14Yeah. You know, if you're, if you're
- 1:16:17making a joke to make a joke and it's really well written and
- 1:16:22well executed, then those people will also lack because, like
- 1:16:27Buffalo Buffalo New York. It's a city of about 300,000
- 1:16:31people and historically the city T votes Democrat.
- 1:16:38Just outside the city for the majority of New York State vote.
- 1:16:43Republican So there's, you know, because New York, New York's are
- 1:16:48really weird state in general, because New York City, is the
- 1:16:51biggest city in the state, and its nine million people.
- 1:16:55And then, the next biggest is Buffalo at 300,000, you know?
- 1:17:00It's insane. And so like all the cities in
- 1:17:04New York, vote blue. But vote Democrat everywhere
- 1:17:09else. Every if you look at like a
- 1:17:11voting map, New York, every other part of the state is red.
- 1:17:15They vote Republican. So you have this weird mix of
- 1:17:20the city, people voting liberal and the everyone else voting
- 1:17:24conservative. So at your, in your audience,
- 1:17:27you have that mix too and you just don't, you don't want to
- 1:17:33lean too much to one side because then you're alienating a
- 1:17:38percentage of the audience. I feel like as well in the
- 1:17:44states that it It's a lot more divisive but it's not to say
- 1:17:47that we're not divisive hearing politics because we absolutely
- 1:17:49are but he doesn't want polite about it because you did.
- 1:17:54It's somehow I don't know. Like, in the state's it's like
- 1:17:56the sort of thing that people will almost win, throw hands
- 1:17:59over sometimes. Then he was worried that if
- 1:18:01you're a comedian doing a show and you offend someone like I
- 1:18:05could be a potentially dangerous moment like for you depending on
- 1:18:08what's been said and how it's done.
- 1:18:10Yeah. So, I mean so far that yeah, you
- 1:18:16just duck. The thing is, I think or I hope
- 1:18:26the people and this is I think I mean a lot of big comedians.
- 1:18:29Talk about this. Like, you came to a comedy show,
- 1:18:33I had a ha, ha, show everything I'm saying on stage is obviously
- 1:18:39a joke. Speaking of which, what do you I
- 1:18:43know it's old news at this point, but it's good to get
- 1:18:46comedians opinion on this. What did you make of the Chris
- 1:18:51Rock Will Smith slap incident from the perspective of like
- 1:18:55what it means, as a comedian - is jokes immediately for sure.
- 1:19:03But like things where it's like, I think that was such an outlier
- 1:19:10situation, you know, the Chris Rock is an award-winning
- 1:19:19comedian. Everything he says, is a joke on
- 1:19:25stage off stage. Sure if she was making fun of
- 1:19:29Jada offstage, that's one thing. What he was doing it on stage.
- 1:19:33Now that being said, it is very much like what I was saying
- 1:19:37before like, finding that line. And then Crossing that line,
- 1:19:42Chris unfortunately found that line on a very public day.
- 1:19:47And that's the thing. It's like when you find that
- 1:19:49line you have to, you have to deal with the repercussions.
- 1:19:54I don't think whale should have slapped him.
- 1:19:56I think we'll should have just said something.
- 1:19:59Like you know when he was like I'll keep my wife's name.
- 1:20:01I think that could have been the end of it.
- 1:20:04I don't think he needed to hit him.
- 1:20:06I don't know why he hit him but it's one of those things where
- 1:20:09it's like as a comedian, that's what you do.
- 1:20:15And like I don't I think Chris might have rethought how he's
- 1:20:21doing some jokes for the future. Like you know, because and also
- 1:20:25the thing is like, Jada from what I know Jada was very
- 1:20:28hush-hush about the entire alopecia situation.
- 1:20:34I think I could be completely wrong but I think I might be
- 1:20:38wrong. Yeah, I think I think she might
- 1:20:39have. Well, here's the thing as well
- 1:20:41like Obviously, no one, no one wants to be made of fun of like,
- 1:20:46for having a medical condition. So it sucks.
- 1:20:49You know, I'll be honest, I didn't notice.
- 1:20:52I thought she just decided to shave her head and was just
- 1:20:55looking bad as a. Because the thing is a lot of
- 1:20:57women do that just because they want the style, and it just
- 1:20:59looks normal and you don't even think anything of it.
- 1:21:01But I think in that particular time frame, she had spoken about
- 1:21:08it, maybe unlike her podcast or something.
- 1:21:10And so it was out there like in Was Chris Rock in the wrong?
- 1:21:18Yes, he probably should have done his research realized that
- 1:21:21that would be in poor taste. Is he the only comedian that's
- 1:21:24ever made a token? Poor taste.
- 1:21:26No like you're gonna be the last?
- 1:21:29No no no no. I mean I think I like Frankie
- 1:21:32boil if you're familiar with him Scottish comedian who back in
- 1:21:38the day he was known for being like ruthless with his
- 1:21:41joke-telling and would just take the mick out of anyone and not
- 1:21:44give to F sub. It now he is criticizing other
- 1:21:49comedians for doing the same thing that he used to do like 15
- 1:21:52or years ago. And it's hypocritical but it
- 1:21:56just makes you think like about how the scene is changed.
- 1:21:59And like I feel bad for comedians because it's such a
- 1:22:01tough time to know how to navigate this.
- 1:22:05It used to be that you could just joke about anything and
- 1:22:07that comedy is just comedy. Yeah, but now there's all these
- 1:22:10rules like, what you can't say this and you kind of say this,
- 1:22:13you have to be careful about this and it's Like how do you
- 1:22:16navigate that? Like, how do you personally do
- 1:22:19with that? It's one of those things where I
- 1:22:25don't remember, I there was a comedian that said it, that was
- 1:22:29like comedy is still comedy, just the words of chains and if
- 1:22:34you can't adapt to it, then you're not a good comedian
- 1:22:39because you can still make jokes about what you were making jokes
- 1:22:42about before, you just have to change the language that you
- 1:22:46were using You know, the topics themselves aren't unable to be
- 1:22:52joked about just the way you describe it.
- 1:22:55It's how you can joke about it, okay?
- 1:22:57To play doubles up kits. What you're saying right now?
- 1:22:59Because I partially disagree with you on this.
- 1:23:02So if it would just certain like refraining from using certain
- 1:23:06words, then I'd agree with you. But like any instance of
- 1:23:08something like Dave Chappelle For example, he made jokes about
- 1:23:13a friend of his and that then angered trance trance Community.
- 1:23:18Yeah, cause the full Opera and there's a, I still don't know
- 1:23:22where I sit on that situation because he was joking about
- 1:23:25friend. And some bad came of that as a
- 1:23:31result of that. And then it caused an uproar and
- 1:23:33everything, and, you know, it causes everyone to re-evaluate,
- 1:23:37but like the point is that particular Community tried to
- 1:23:39cancel them for that. Yeah.
- 1:23:41And Netflix made the decision stand by him and it's a bit of
- 1:23:45an icky situation and it makes you wonder like so you can't
- 1:23:48tell jokes about that. Is that what it is?
- 1:23:52That's the thing is like also I think the one of the funniest
- 1:23:56parts of their data Situation was that when the Outlast the
- 1:24:01backlash came out about what he said, one of the top Netflix
- 1:24:06people came out and did a press conference to was like, Yeah.
- 1:24:12Dave can say all this stuff. It's just like me saying.
- 1:24:15And then he just said, a racial slur on live TV and then, boom.
- 1:24:20I did you do that? You idiot.
- 1:24:22Oh my God. apologize to different
- 1:24:54communities for being insensitive and then and At the
- 1:24:58end of it, he's like that would be like if I would take the
- 1:25:00pickup and then he just starts mocking someone else.
- 1:25:03And he goes, yeah, I'm back here to apologize for my
- 1:25:06insensitivity. So it's like, it's there.
- 1:25:16I think like what the Dave Chappelle situation with every
- 1:25:20situation where somebody comes out and says that they didn't
- 1:25:23like it, it is. It's a matter of how the joke is
- 1:25:32executed, I think, Hmm, okay, because it's either and then
- 1:25:36it's also like as a comedian, you're going to either defend
- 1:25:40every joke or you're going to defend no jokes.
- 1:25:43Because of going to be comedians, that will push that
- 1:25:47boundary of what's, okay to say, what's not.
- 1:25:49Okay, to say. And like, you know, Dave was
- 1:25:51talking about a friend of his. So, Dave, 100% ran those jokes
- 1:25:58by that person. And then that's that's, that's
- 1:26:03that's the thing as well because in a world where Like
- 1:26:08representation really matters and you look at things like
- 1:26:11okay, let's just take for example, what's going on with
- 1:26:13the little mermaid right now? Yeah, it's kind of wild.
- 1:26:18There's a lot of people like it makes me to be honest with you.
- 1:26:22What I'm seeing right now. It happened with Kenobi, is
- 1:26:26happening with a lot of series. It's like whenever there seems
- 1:26:28to be like a black performer in a major role.
- 1:26:31People just seem really angry about it.
- 1:26:33Yeah. And it's just like that makes me
- 1:26:34think like, okay, well I guess there's just a hell of a lot of
- 1:26:37People that have an issue. What?
- 1:26:39And I just and I don't I don't get that.
- 1:26:41I mean, I get that obviously, I don't get racism.
- 1:26:45Who does. So it doesn't make sense.
- 1:26:47But, like, more than that. It's like, then you also like my
- 1:26:52bring up The Little Mermaid. Like I saw a video the other day
- 1:26:55and it was so beautiful. Is this that loads of the like
- 1:26:57little girls and the boys reactions to seeing that, the
- 1:27:02lead character is back. Yeah.
- 1:27:04And and, and they're like that in that really happy.
- 1:27:07He and excited about it, and it's just like, that's the
- 1:27:10importance that and bring it back to what we were talking
- 1:27:13about before. Like, even in the cunt, like, I
- 1:27:15feel like everything should be taking the mick out of, but not,
- 1:27:20but not to mock it. Like, there's something wrong
- 1:27:22with it, but to Market, so that because I feel like not joking
- 1:27:26about things is almost like, what I'm doing.
- 1:27:30Yeah. It's like single it out like all
- 1:27:31the contacts that and it's like but then the debate on what you
- 1:27:35can joke about as well. That's You could do the entire
- 1:27:38podcast about that. Well, that is the thing, and
- 1:27:40that's the thing. It's like, especially with, with
- 1:27:43the little mermaid, there know, the people who are mad about it.
- 1:27:48Because in reality it's just another person playing a role.
- 1:27:52It's a person who got cast for a role.
- 1:27:54Yeah. You're seeing them as anything
- 1:27:56else then you're you're labeling that person to you know it's
- 1:28:01like it could just be what I don't know what her name is.
- 1:28:06It could just be her name but they're seeing it as a blank
- 1:28:10actress is now playing Ariel. You know, instead of just this
- 1:28:15actresses playing, they're putting something in front of it
- 1:28:18just to get mad about. It doesn't have to be, you know,
- 1:28:21it's like it's the same. When the Annie, the new Annie
- 1:28:25came out and Jamie Foxx played mr.
- 1:28:27Warbucks and it was, everyone was like, oh, it's now blank
- 1:28:31Annie, it's no longer Annie even though it's 100% Annie just
- 1:28:36different people thing, okay? They're putting a label in front
- 1:28:40of it because they don't like it.
- 1:28:43I see, and that's the thing. It happens with comedians.
- 1:28:45That happens with musicians and it happens with actresses and
- 1:28:48actors and everybody. The people who are mad about it,
- 1:28:52they're not mad at them making a new, you know, thing they're mad
- 1:28:58about something prior to it, you know.
- 1:29:02So I can people just enjoy shit bonsoir clocks.
- 1:29:05Just chill the fuck out. So there's a black Ariel,
- 1:29:09everyone's in here if she does a great.
- 1:29:11Excellent. It's a movie.
- 1:29:12Yeah, that's What I care about is, how well are you are?
- 1:29:15How good are you at playing the role?
- 1:29:16That's why I care about my God. I couldn't give two shits.
- 1:29:20If you're white black Asian, whatever.
- 1:29:22Like just just if you can do it well, do it if you get.
- 1:29:26Yeah. You know, those it was like for
- 1:29:28instance I remember here in the UK, there's a there's a series
- 1:29:32that they did of like a version of that Amber Lynn or something
- 1:29:36and they chose to cast and berliners like those are back
- 1:29:40actress paying and it's just like load.
- 1:29:42People get annoyed about it because it was historically
- 1:29:46inaccurate, and it's like, I'm sorry.
- 1:29:48Name me one of those series. That is 100% historically
- 1:29:52accurate because basically, none of them are like when they put
- 1:30:00in Star Wars. Like people just focus on
- 1:30:14someone's fucking skin. Color is exactly.
- 1:30:17And it's just and that's the thing.
- 1:30:19It's like, everything. I think everything is within the
- 1:30:24limits of being joked about, but it's that old, it's the old
- 1:30:27saying you punch up. You don't punch down and like
- 1:30:30what you were saying. You don't mock the purse.
- 1:30:31Yeah, yeah, yeah. Like you couldn't yeah, you
- 1:30:35know, you have a joke. The guy I have jokes that punch
- 1:30:39up. I have chokes that anything that
- 1:30:42I do? I make sure it doesn't punch
- 1:30:44down because you don't want to make fun of people.
- 1:30:48But you are trying to tell a story so unique and descriptive
- 1:30:52factors. You need things in there to
- 1:30:54provide context of what you're saying and some of those things
- 1:30:57happen to be their sexuality, their ethnicity, their food,
- 1:31:01take, you know, like anything about them, comes into it.
- 1:31:04And it's not saying like whatever comes after is because
- 1:31:07of who they are. I'm just giving you the idea of
- 1:31:10who this person is so that the rest of the story makes sense,
- 1:31:15you know, I'm providing a setting For the action that
- 1:31:19happens later. It's not like it's not you know
- 1:31:21if somebody makes a joke about me, it's like oh the big white
- 1:31:25guy did this and this and this like nothing in the action
- 1:31:29relates to me being a big white guy.
- 1:31:32You just need to know that I'm a big white guy because the story
- 1:31:37needs something. I can't just be like my friend
- 1:31:40did that, my friend did this, because that's a boring story,
- 1:31:45you know. Speaking of stories, you have a
- 1:31:48podcast called The Story Time Podcast.
- 1:31:50Okay. Tell us about that.
- 1:31:53Terrible. No, appreciate your honesty.
- 1:31:57Don't say that. I mean it's I hosted my friend,
- 1:32:06John John, and I have known each other for a very long time.
- 1:32:10John is a former touring musician and so that's where the
- 1:32:16name story. It's tou are for tour is very
- 1:32:21nice. Story.
- 1:32:24A lot of people because I posted stuff about it.
- 1:32:27My friends were like you understand that spelled
- 1:32:28incorrectly? I was like that is the point and
- 1:32:32then I tell them I'll just put it o is it?
- 1:32:36Oh no it's just the British tour.
- 1:32:40Yeah. So it's just kind of stories
- 1:32:42from people who have traveled. People have been on tour.
- 1:32:46People have experienced things on the road so a lot of the
- 1:32:51guests so far have been Former musicians, former touring
- 1:32:55musicians are one friend, Colin was on it and he, I believe
- 1:32:59like, one on one or two tours, but his stories were mostly
- 1:33:02about his time in the Air Force, when he was in South Korea, we
- 1:33:06have some coming up, we have a couple comedians coming up, we
- 1:33:09have other. Yeah, just to or anything tour
- 1:33:12related is usually what we end up talking about him, just
- 1:33:15because that's like, I haven't really toward but I've traveled
- 1:33:19to do comedy just been in like places too.
- 1:33:23And then, John has spent years, probably 56 years on the road
- 1:33:29touring as a musician. So, It's just, it's such a weird
- 1:33:35time to be on the road and working like that, because what
- 1:33:40people see, like, if you go to see a band, you know, you go to
- 1:33:44see your are you where are you? Are you a Manchester?
- 1:33:48You Sam? Yeah, right.
- 1:33:50All right, so you go to see Arctic Monkeys at the what was I
- 1:33:57went to a show in Manchester once and I can't remember the
- 1:33:58name of the venue. I was going to try to do a
- 1:34:00little tie in there. Hey, We'll play with.
- 1:34:03The fuck is cool. It was that like meant there was
- 1:34:05that, I'll find the ticket. Um, you know, you go to see a
- 1:34:09band in Manchester you're only seeing that part of their day,
- 1:34:15but there's so much that happens between con the concert that
- 1:34:20people just don't really know about, and it's like a lot of
- 1:34:23the guys that we've had on so far toward before, they were GPS
- 1:34:27before, they were smart phones. So it's like, how did you get
- 1:34:30from Buffalo? Los Angeles.
- 1:34:34Yeah, you know what happened? And stuff like that.
- 1:34:38It reminds me of, I really like this.
- 1:34:42This guy called Jim cornette. He does a couple of podcasts.
- 1:34:45It really another wrestling guy. Sorry guys.
- 1:34:47And this is a wrestling podcast now.
- 1:34:50Yeah, there's a lot of like really interesting Road stories.
- 1:34:54They talks about where like mostly.
- 1:34:56He's talking about the 80s and 90s of him touring states that
- 1:35:00obviously before. Yeah, same thing before
- 1:35:02smartphones before all of that and just like how they would get
- 1:35:05around. How they would move between the
- 1:35:07territories and stuff. And it's, it's just fascinating
- 1:35:10that and about that sort of stuff, you know, and also just
- 1:35:12like how different the world was like.
- 1:35:14I often think about that. Now, like, how different the
- 1:35:17world is today versus how it was when I was growing up and it's
- 1:35:21just like, hey It was me it's such a crazy time.
- 1:35:27Like one of the guys, the guy that we had on this last week,
- 1:35:33he talks about one of the tours that he did and he's like, we
- 1:35:37had cell phones but they were flip phone.
- 1:35:39Yeah. Didn't have GPS.
- 1:35:40So you would print out the directions and you would have to
- 1:35:43like, count the odometer to make sure you're getting the right
- 1:35:46amount of miles before you made it turn and if you messed up
- 1:35:49that it was like, all right, let's see what happens here.
- 1:35:52Like, I guess like Like into known funds, flip phones, sucked
- 1:35:59ass. It's a two by ten minutes to
- 1:36:05load a webpage. It was this is no point by up
- 1:36:07until the first iPhone was made. It was no point trying to use
- 1:36:11internet on folks. You hear ya by the time the web
- 1:36:16page loaded. You no longer needed the web.
- 1:36:18Yeah. I looked at that was a
- 1:36:21Manchester Academy I saw? Well, yeah, we go Manchester
- 1:36:24Academy cool man. Cool.
- 1:36:27See Ben. That's where first time was, the
- 1:36:29first time I had a Greg's vegan sausage wrong but it changed
- 1:36:33man. So Boris Johnson says it, isn't
- 1:36:37it? Vegan sausage roll, I love
- 1:36:41those. Don't know what they put in them
- 1:36:43in Greg's. Pretty one at Stateside and you
- 1:36:45come to the UK definitely try Greg's.
- 1:36:47It's not high quality, it's Low quality but it's cheap.
- 1:36:51And for some reason it's just really good, I don't know what
- 1:36:54they put into those pastries but they're so good.
- 1:36:58They're like 60, 70 pounds for like yeah.
- 1:37:00Just makes me want to Greg's it is.
- 1:37:06I need to get the gym after this.
- 1:37:08Okay. A couple of final questions for
- 1:37:11you. Yeah.
- 1:37:12What's the best advice you've ever received?
- 1:37:17I'll give you two, I'll give you two because they're both short.
- 1:37:20I think the first one was what my friend Jake to me.
- 1:37:22Jake said to me, which was just shut up and do it.
- 1:37:26Because it's like you're either going to do it or you're not
- 1:37:28going to do it so just do it. You know, there's no point in
- 1:37:32like just talking about it like oh I'll do it next time.
- 1:37:35I'll do it next time. It's like you're either gonna do
- 1:37:36it or you're not. So just do it or don't but just
- 1:37:40do it. And the other one was, you know
- 1:37:44what, you're going to say, you know what you want to say?
- 1:37:47So just say it. And that came from joke writing.
- 1:37:52I don't remember who specifically said it to me, but
- 1:37:55I was talking to them about writing jokes and I, because
- 1:37:59it's like, I thought I needed to write a bunch of detail because
- 1:38:05there's some there's some conveniently, George Carlin
- 1:38:08famously would write out every word that he would say on stage
- 1:38:12as if it was a script but he would deliver it without it
- 1:38:15sounding like it was a script but he would write every single
- 1:38:19word verbatim and so I wasn't doing that but I wasn't just
- 1:38:25writing premises like ideas I was writing like things that I
- 1:38:28thought would help and then a friend of mine was just like,
- 1:38:32okay, this is what you want to talk about.
- 1:38:33Just go start talking about of it and see what happens, you
- 1:38:38know, it's either going to go well or it doesn't and then you
- 1:38:40work from there, you know there's no point over thinking
- 1:38:44what you want to say. But in.
- 1:38:48And what's the biggest life lesson you've learned so far?
- 1:38:51Everything sucks. Now, That there's no there's no
- 1:39:01concern. That's not the word.
- 1:39:03There's no. I can't think of the word.
- 1:39:07So basically the idea is I'll describe the idea and see if we
- 1:39:11can find Workshop that were here.
- 1:39:15Amy Schumer. The famous American comedian got
- 1:39:18Last Comic Standing three years into comedy.
- 1:39:22Bert, Kreischer. Six months in the comedy.
- 1:39:24Got a six-figure development deal with Will Smith.
- 1:39:28Bobby Lee got past, the San Diego.
- 1:39:30Comedy Store nine months into comedy.
- 1:39:36A lot of the guys, I listen to Tom Segura Ryan sickler.
- 1:39:40A lot of the UK comedian. So it's Jimmy, Carter, Jimmy
- 1:39:43Carter got paid one on one of his first gigs like he never
- 1:39:46done comedy before and then all of a sudden he did like to shows
- 1:39:49me was starting to be a paid comedian and then like Johnny
- 1:39:53Vegas and all these other people worked for years with nothing
- 1:39:57and then all of a sudden it happened.
- 1:39:59So it's either. There's no Like, there's no you
- 1:40:03can't compare yourself to the people who got stuff so early,
- 1:40:08and you also can't compare yourself to the people who
- 1:40:10didn't because it's just, there's no set idea.
- 1:40:13There's no set guidelines for how to do it.
- 1:40:15It's gonna happen and it might happen soon.
- 1:40:18It might happen later what, it's going to happen at some point,
- 1:40:23you know, as long as and that's, you know, as long as you keep
- 1:40:27working, as long as you work hard, as long as you keep
- 1:40:29putting in the necessary work. People will see that.
- 1:40:33And that's the yeah that's the life lesson I got from.
- 1:40:37Kind of well we'll keep working hard.
- 1:40:40It's motivational just cut that put that on repeat for an hour.
- 1:40:45No for real? No jokes aside.
- 1:40:48I need to hear that. Thank you.
- 1:40:50Thank you ma'am. Yeah, final question.
- 1:40:53Do you have any upcoming projects or final thoughts you'd

- 1:41:16crap, but just show up. Anyway, be there for people, but
