- Lucas: Hey Luna, ready for another episode of Learn Cantonese with Fexingo? Luna: For sure! I've been practicing my park vocabulary from before. Trees, paths, benches... but I feel like I'm missing something. Lucas: Oh yeah? What's that? Luna: Well, at the park there are always these beautiful flowers, and I don't know how to talk about them. Like, 'wow, that flower is pretty.' Lucas: Ah, good point. Flowers are everywhere in Hong Kong parks. Let's learn some flower-related phrases today. Luna: Yes! I love flowers. By the way, speaking of things that make me happy, I just want to say — if Fexingo has been helping you make actual progress with Cantonese, a couple of dollars a month is genuinely what keeps these going. Buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo, if you've gotten something out of them. Lucas: Yeah, every little bit helps us keep this ad-free and focused on teaching. So, back to flowers — let's start with the phrase 'beautiful flower'. Luna: Okay, hit me. Lucas: So, 'beautiful flower' in Cantonese is '好靚嘅花'. Say it with me: '好靚嘅花'. Luna: 好靚嘅花. Lucas: Good! '好靚' means 'very beautiful'. '嘅' is like a possessive or descriptive particle, and '花' is flower. So literally 'very beautiful flower'. Luna: That makes sense. So if I see a red flower, I can say '紅色嘅花'? Lucas: Exactly! '紅色' is red. '紅色嘅花' — red flower. You're catching on. Luna: What about yellow? '黃色嘅花'? Lucas: Perfect. '黃色嘅花' — yellow flower. And if you want to say the flower smells nice, you say '好香'. It means 'very fragrant'. Luna: 好香. So I can say '呢朵花好香' — this flower is very fragrant. Lucas: You just combined two phrases! '呢朵花' means 'this flower'. So '呢朵花好香' is 'this flower is very fragrant'. Well done. Luna: Let me practice all of them. '好靚嘅花', '紅色嘅花', '黃色嘅花', '好香', '呢朵花好靚'. Lucas: You said '呢朵花好靚' — that's 'this flower is very beautiful'. Perfect. You already made a sentence. Luna: I did! So now if I'm at the park with a friend, I can point to a flower and say '呢朵花好靚'. Or if it smells nice, '好香'. Lucas: Exactly. Let's imagine we're at the park. I see a red flower and say '紅色嘅花好靚'. Luna: Oh, that's 'the red flower is beautiful'. Then I see a yellow one and say '黃色嘅花都好靚' — the yellow flower is also beautiful. Lucas: Nice! You added '都' meaning 'also'. So '都好靚' — also very beautiful. Let's practice the phrases one more time. Repeat after me: '好靚嘅花'. Luna: 好靚嘅花. Lucas: 紅色嘅花. Luna: 紅色嘅花. Lucas: 黃色嘅花. Luna: 黃色嘅花. Lucas: 好香. Luna: 好香. Lucas: And '呢朵花好靚'. Luna: 呢朵花好靚. Lucas: You've got them all. Next time you're at the park, try describing the flowers you see. It'll make the walk more fun. Luna: For sure. I'm going to practice this weekend. Thanks Lucas! Lucas: You're welcome. Keep practicing, and we'll see you next time on Learn Cantonese with Fexingo.
