- 0:07The Brooklyn Dodgers faced the Philadelphia Phillies at Connie Maxx Stadium for opening day in Philadelphia on Tuesday, April 16th, 1957.
- 0:15The Dodgers were looking to make it back to the World Series for the third consecutive season under manager Walt Alston, who was in his fourth year as skipper.
- 0:22The Dodgers had won 90 or more games in seven consecutive seasons, including four trips to the fall classic in the past five seasons.
- 0:30Philadelphia had been a 500 team for several seasons after their surprising trip to the World Series in 1950.
- 0:36They entered the 1957 season under manager Mayo Smith in his third year with the club.
- 0:41This audio recording is from the Dodgers radio broadcast featuring announcers Vince Scully, Jerry Doggett, and Al Helfer.
- 0:48For real enjoyment, Brooklyn Dodger baseball. For real enjoyment, get Schaeffer. It's real beer.
- 0:57Yes, here come the Dodgers. And this is Jerry Doggett with Al Helfer and Vince Scully, inviting you to stay with us now as they invade Connie Maxx Stadium to play the Philadelphia Phillies.
- 1:08All the doings are sent your way with the compliments of the F&M Schaeffer Brewing Company of Brooklyn, brewers of America's oldest lager beer, Schaeffer.
- 1:17And also with the compliments of the American Tobacco Company, America's leading manufacturer of cigarettes on behalf of Lucky Strike, the buzz-pasting cigarette you ever smoke.
- 1:28Now as the game gets underway, for real enjoyment, have yourself a foaming glass of Schaeffer. It's real beer.
- 1:36We have a meeting at home plate now between manager Walt Alston and manager Mayo Smith.
- 1:41We're going to have the forum part for tonight's ball game and this National League season for the Dodgers and the Phillies is going to be opening up here in just a very few moments.
- 1:49Let's give you a rundown now on the starting lineup. For the visiting Dodgers, it'll be Jim Gilliam at second base.
- 1:57Geno Samoley in left field. Duke Snyder in center field. Carl Ferrello in right field.
- 2:06Gil Hodges at first base. Randy Jackson at third. Roy Campanella will do the catching.
- 2:16Don Zimmer at shortstop and Don Newcomb on the mound to do the pitching.
- 2:21Big Don, of course, the most valuable player of the year last year in the National League, won 27 games and lost seven.
- 2:28For the Phillies, it'll be Richie Ashburn in center field. Chico Fernandez at shortstop. Ed Busce at first base.
- 2:38Rip Raposki in left field. Willie Jones at third base. Stan Lopata, the catcher. Bob Bowman in right field.
- 2:49Ted Kazanski at shortstop and Robin Roberts on the mound to do the pitching.
- 2:55There's the umpire for tonight's ball game. Dusty Boggess at the plate. Tom Gorman at first base.
- 3:01Hal Dixon at second and Ken Burkhart is at third base.
- 3:06Right now, Robin Roberts burning down a few warm-up crosses and we'll have the National League season for the Phillies and Dodgers underway.
- 3:12This afternoon, the other clubs got busy. The Pirates beat the Giants 9-2. Milwaukee beat the Cubs 4-1.
- 3:18And St. Louis beat Cincinnati 13-4. An American League activity. The Yankees beat Washington 2-1.
- 3:25Boston beat Baltimore 4-2. Chicago beat Cleveland 3-2. And Kansas City beat Detroit 2-1.
- 3:32So now, on the mound. Robin Roberts tuning up with catcher Stan Lopata.
- 3:37The practice side to second base and standing by ready to call the play-by-play for you for the F&M Schaeffer Brewing Company of Brooklyn and Schaeffer Beer.
- 3:44Here's Al Helfer. Al, let's go with the season.
- 3:48All right, Jerry, thank you very much. And hi, everybody.
- 3:51The 82nd National League season about to break forth in Philadelphia where the first major league ball game was played.
- 3:59The first game in the National League was played right here in Philadelphia on the 22nd of April in 1876.
- 4:05And Roberts fires the first pitch through to Gilliam for strike one.
- 4:09Thus, this one has begun. Jim Gilliam, who last year hit an even 300 with six home runs and 43 runs batted in, is up there taking the next pitch.
- 4:21And that's good too for a strike.
- 4:25So Robin Roberts seems to be his old sharp self here tonight as he begins the season for the Philadelphia Phillies.
- 4:31Jim Gilliam standing in, hitting left-handed against the right-hand offerings of Roberts.
- 4:38There's a little fastball swung on and hit deep to right field. Bob Bowman is going back, back on the cinder track and hauls it down for the outs.
- 4:47So the 1957 season has now begun.
- 4:52One out for the Dodgers here in the top half of any number one. And the batter coming up is Gino Simoli.
- 4:57This sort of culminates for Simoli, a tremendous attempt this year to become a member of the Dodger varsity.
- 5:04Gino Simoli, who when he came to spring training this year, made one statement, a very quiet one.
- 5:10He said one night, we were sitting around talking, he said, this has got to be my year. I've got to make it this year.
- 5:18We said to him, Gino, do you think you'll be in the starting lineup opening day? He said, I'm going to give it everything I've got.
- 5:25Gino Simoli, ladies and gentlemen, stepping up to the plate. He hit 111 last year for the Brooklyn Dodgers, had four runs batted in,
- 5:33and the first pitch and hit the highest foul ball off the first base line. That goes to the roof and to the light tower out of play.
- 5:41This will be quite a day or a night, as the case may be, for a couple of young fellows on the field.
- 5:50Mr. Simoli is one of them. Roberts comes in with a right arm pick that's swung on and pops foul off to the right of the plate.
- 5:55Looks how to dig it over to the stands. Can he get it? He cannot. It's into the box.
- 6:00Gino Simoli is still up there swinging with the counter strike, too.
- 6:14Dusty Boggess will play down fire, gives out a brand new baseball to Robin Roberts.
- 6:21We're in the top half of the first inning of the opening game of the 1957 season.
- 6:28Roberts comes down 0-2 to Simoli. The pitch is swung on and lined in the center field. Richie Ashburn has the range on it and hauls it in.
- 6:35So Simoli hits the ball well, but lined it right to Richie Ashburn, the center fielder.
- 6:40There are two outs in the top half of the first inning. There are no base runners.
- 6:45Coming up to the plate now is Duke Snyder, who during the springtime, as is his custom, hits rather lightly.
- 6:53But the bell has rung and the chips are down. They're big and they're blue.
- 6:58Snyder has a determined step to his jaw these days.
- 7:01Roberts delivers him. Snyder swings and pops a foul off to the left of the plate. That comes to the top of the roof on play.
- 7:09No balls, one strike to count on Duke Snyder.
- 7:14Schaefer Beer, very happy to be sending it to you tonight from Coneymax Stadium in Philadelphia.
- 7:19Hope you're relaxing right now with a tall fool Schaefer. That's real beer.
- 7:26That on fastball swung on, popped off off the third baseline. Coming over for it is Jones near the stands and he's got it.
- 7:36So the first half of the first inning is over. And for the Brooklyn Dodgers, they have nothing across.
- 7:43And the score at the end of the top half of the first inning, the Dodgers nothing, the now coming to bat Commodocie Phillies have nothing.
- 7:52Gary's got something, let's find him an error.
- 7:55You know, when friends stop in to visit, it's part of the American way to make them sit right back and kind of feel at home.
- 8:02Man, that's where Schaefer Beer does you proud.
- 8:05There's just no better way to make the folks feel welcome than to pass around tall, cool, golden amber glasses on Schaefer Beer.
- 8:13It's your way of saying you want your friends to really enjoy themselves in your home.
- 8:18No question about it, because Schaefer is beer at its best.
- 8:23Beer that's brewed only of rich barley malt, tangy hops, and other fine natural ingredients.
- 8:30Schaefer, that's where you get the light, lively, satisfying flavor you want but don't always find.
- 8:38The lilt and lift of truly great beer.
- 8:41The next time you expect the Klan or the neighbors to gather around your living room, make sure you have plenty of Schaefer Beer on ice.
- 8:50For real enjoyment, make it Schaefer. It's real beer.
- 8:57Well, a couple of real control artists working here tonight.
- 9:00Robin Roberts in the first inning didn't offer up a ball if they're all strikes.
- 9:05John Newcomb has a real good arm as far as that fifth strike zone is concerned too, so here we go.
- 9:11Last to the first, right back down.
- 9:13Richie Ashburn coming up as the leadoff man for the Philadelphia Phillies.
- 9:17Last year he hit.303 at three home runs and 50 runs batted in.
- 9:23Stilled in the box with the flyer and hit some left-handed and is always a threat to drop the bunt down the third base line.
- 9:28Thus, Randy Jackson plays up shallow at third base.
- 9:32The outfield playing straight away and not too deep to Ashburn as Big Don Newcomb takes his time from Roy Campanella.
- 9:38Now let's see the Dodgers defensively for 1957.
- 9:42There's the fast ball fired through but low for ball one.
- 9:46Richie Ashburn to be followed by former Dodger Chico Fernandez and then by Ed Bucci, the first baseman up from the Miami Ball Club of the International League.
- 10:00Newcomb kicking dirt out of the mound.
- 10:04The Dodgers defensively, Don Newcomb on the mound, 27-game winner.
- 10:07His better-amate, Roy Campanella.
- 10:10Down comes the next pitch, fast ball fired high for ball two.
- 10:16Two balls and no strikes.
- 10:18The Dodger infield of Hodges at first base, Jim Gilliam at second.
- 10:23At shortstop, Don Zimmer, a big night for Don.
- 10:27And as he said just prior to the ball game, he said he was deeply thankful and grateful for having the opportunity of playing at shortstop for the Dodgers,
- 10:36but he hated to do so at the expense of a grand guy named Reese.
- 10:39The third ball is over.
- 10:41Denise for a strike.
- 10:45We sincerely hope that if Captain Reese is listening in at the St. George Hotel in Brooklyn,
- 10:50that he knows just exactly how the boy taking his place tonight on the field feels about him.
- 10:55He wants him to come back just as soon as he possibly can.
- 10:58Because Zimmer, well, Reese happens to be his item.
- 11:03The pitch is flung on.
- 11:04There's a fly ball hit to left field.
- 11:05Gino Somoli over near the line, hauls it in.
- 11:08Gino had that one played just right.
- 11:10Ashburn jumping an outside pitch down the left field line and Somoli played it tight.
- 11:15Oh, there's one away in the last half of the first inning.
- 11:19Brandy Jackson is third for the Dodgers.
- 11:21That completes their infield.
- 11:22The outfield is Gino Somoli in left.
- 11:24Duke Snyder in center.
- 11:26And Carl Ferrello in right.
- 11:29Chico Fernandez stepping up to the plate.
- 11:33As a Dodger last year, he hit 227, hit one home run and had nine runs batted in.
- 11:38He takes a crossfire that's under the letters good for a strike.
- 11:44Fernandez, the right-hand hitter, bats McCrouch.
- 11:47Stands about three-quarters deep at the plate.
- 11:50This is a big opportunity for Chico.
- 11:52He is starting his first big league season as a starter.
- 12:00That ball swung on by Chico and popped back foul to the stands.
- 12:04Strike two.
- 12:11I don't suppose I'll ever forget the look on Chico's face when he was informed that he'd been sold to the Philadelphia Phillies.
- 12:20Sort of mixed emotions.
- 12:21He didn't want to leave the ball
- 12:23Who would want to leave a bunch of guys like these Dodgers?
- 12:28Noverhand Curveball is tied to Chico right off the face for ball one.
- 12:33And yet Chico knew that moving into Philadelphia, where they were hungry for infield talent,
- 12:38he would have an excellent opportunity to play a lot of baseball and start his career solid.
- 12:45So he's down at the plate right now, number 45, leaning over with a count of one ball, two strikes with Don Newper.
- 12:55Big Don starts his pumping motion. Here's the one-two pitch.
- 12:59An overhand fastball swung on and hit down into the ground foul.
- 13:17The bench.
- 13:46Now the two-two delivery.
- 14:12And it's the batter with a count of three balls and two strikes.
- 14:17Big Don Newcombe out on the line for the Dodgers tonight.
- 14:20Starts his motion. His three-two pitch is whipped in there.
- 14:23Over for cold strike three.
- 14:25Oh, Fernandez sadly turns and walks away.
- 14:28Newcombe wrecks up the first strike out of the ball game.
- 14:34The first to play now will be Ed Pucci. He spells his name B-O-U-C-H-E-E.
- 14:43Edward Francis Pucci.
- 14:48I think the pronunciation for his name actually is Pucci.
- 14:52He was recalled by the Finners from Miami on the 4th of September last year.
- 14:56Left-hand hitter swings on the first pitch and fouls it to the roof off the third-base side to strike one.
- 15:03The ball was born in 1933 out at Livingston, Montana.
- 15:10He now lives in Miami, Florida where he played ball last year.
- 15:13Graduated from Lewis and Clark High School out in Foucault back in 1951.
- 15:19Swings on the next pitch and dribbles it up the first baseline foul.
- 15:23No balls, two strikes.
- 15:26The boy who went to Washington State College and then went to Gonzaga played baseball, football, basketball.
- 15:44Ed Pucci, French-Canadian, English descent, stands about three-quarters deep at the plate,
- 15:51takes a look at a pitch and that's outside.
- 15:54One ball and two strikes.
- 15:57Ed Pucci began his organized baseball career with Spokane, the Western International League, 52,
- 16:04and then he was on the national service list until 55 when he came back disconnected in the Eastern League.
- 16:1156 he was with Miami and was up for nine games with the Phillies last year.
- 16:15Swings on the slow curve and fouls it to the roof.
- 16:20One ball and two strikes.
- 16:22Last year with Philadelphia he hit 273 and with Miami the International League he appeared in 144 ball games and batted 294.
- 16:30That's Mayo Smith giving him a good look over this year and an opportunity to start tonight as a Philadelphia regular.
- 16:37Ed Boucher, Newcomb flaps his wings, comes in with a fast ball and that's up above the shoulders.
- 16:45Two balls, two strikes.
- 16:47Ed Boucher with two down, no base runners in the last half of the first inning and no score.
- 16:52And Schaefer Beer sending it all to you from Conny Mack Stadium down from Adelphi Way.
- 16:58Open date tomorrow but come Thursday it'll be the home opener with the Pittsburgh Pirates at Ebbets Field.
- 17:05Hope you've got your ticket.
- 17:07Two-two delivery, fast ball, cold strike three.
- 17:10Fired right in off the fifth.
- 17:12Newcomb starts to walk off the mound as he picks up his second strikeout tonight.
- 17:18And the first inning for Philadelphia, nothing across, the score at the end of one.
- 17:22It's the Dodgers, nothing.
- 17:24Just Philadelphia Phillies have nothing.
- 17:27Adelphi, Jerry, what do you got for us?
- 17:30Well you know how one of the handy things about the Schaefer Six Pack is that they're so easy to spot in the store.
- 17:36You just look around for scenes of folks doing the things folks do, fishing, having a picnic,
- 17:43working in the shop, watching TV, enjoying a glass of Schaefer Beer in each of these situations.
- 17:50Those are the pictures right on the sides of the Schaefer Six Pack.
- 17:54Pictures of enjoyment, real enjoyment.
- 17:58Naturally they go hand in hand with what's inside the Schaefer Six Pack.
- 18:04The real beer flavor that gives you so much enjoyment.
- 18:08So when you stop by the store, pick up a Schaefer Six Pack or two.
- 18:13Just look for the white background and the pictures of young folks enjoying themselves.
- 18:19You'll enjoy Schaefer yourself.
- 18:22It's real beer.
- 18:25Well there we go on the second inning.
- 18:27Carl Perillo, Gil Hodges, and Randy Jackson.
- 18:30The three do the face drop and Roberts goes right back down.
- 18:34Last year in the National League, Brooklyn's right fielder Carl Perillo, very steady ball player, batted 289.
- 18:42He had 21 home runs and 83 runs batted in.
- 18:45Against the Phils he hit 268 in the springtime after a late start.
- 18:49He settled for a 2-5-4 batting effort.
- 18:52Carl, the right hand hitter, standing in.
- 18:54Big square-shouldered right-hander delivers. A lot of fastball that misses outside for ball one.
- 19:01Robin Roberts on the mound, Stan Lopata behind the plate.
- 19:04Ted Boucher at first base, Ted Kizanski at second.
- 19:07The shortstop Chico Fernandez and at third for the Phillies.
- 19:10Foot and head jump.
- 19:12We'll get the outfield for you in a moment.
- 19:14Sidearm curveball that's outside and low.
- 19:17Fiorello's count is two balls and no strikes.
- 19:21Out of left field, Ripper Pulsky for Philadelphia, new face here at City of Brotherly Love.
- 19:28In center field, Richie Ashburn and in right field, Bob Bowman.
- 19:33Roberts ready, delivers two and nothing.
- 19:35Sidearm curve and Fiorello fouls it back to the screen.
- 19:39Two balls, one strike.
- 19:42No score on this one here tonight.
- 19:47However, the scores this afternoon had Milwaukee beating Chicago 4-1,
- 19:51St. Louis defeating Cincinnati 13-4, and Pittsburgh taking the Giants 9-2.
- 19:58Roberts ready, two ones to plate.
- 20:00Fiorello takes the pitches outside by shape for ball three.
- 20:06Three balls, one strike on Carl Fiorello, who now looks around and checks up with Herman,
- 20:10coaching down to third base to see what kind of sign is on the pennant.
- 20:16Roberts to the 3-1 delivery.
- 20:18Down it comes, fastball, wrapped deep into left field.
- 20:21Back and up for it is Ripper Pulsky.
- 20:22Can he get it? He cannot.
- 20:24It's in, the left field stands.
- 20:26Is it? No, it's not.
- 20:27Not quite. Did not quite make it.
- 20:30Right up against the board.
- 20:32The left fielder was able to reach up and make the catch.
- 20:36So Ripper Pulsky handles that one.
- 20:38He started to look up until that ball was gone, and then suddenly reached up and nailed it.
- 20:45Joe Fiorello is out on a high fly ball driven deep to the wall in left field.
- 20:51Kind of hard, that ball, settling down out of the night to see exactly where it has gone.
- 20:56Really have to watch the fielder.
- 21:00The battery punches with one out on the top of the second inning.
- 21:04Roberts delivers the fastball. It's low and outside for ball one.
- 21:11Boy, it looked almost for the moment.
- 21:13Joe Fiorello had really gotten started.
- 21:20Robin Roberts ready to pitch again now to Yellow Hodges on the one-nothing count.
- 21:25Pitch is swung on. There's a high fly ball hit out into short center field.
- 21:30Coming on for it is Ashburn calling for it.
- 21:32It's Ashburn making the catch.
- 21:34So two out in the top of the second inning.
- 21:37The batter now will be Randy Jackson.
- 21:46Randy Jackson hit 274 last year.
- 21:51That's nine percentage points more than Hodges, who preceded him here in the batting order tonight.
- 21:56Had eight home runs and 53 runs batted in that, Randy.
- 21:59Right-hand hitter takes the lead up fastball over for a strike.
- 22:04Two down. The bases are empty and there is no score.
- 22:14Roberts back with a three-quarter overhand fastball, and that's fouled into the stands off the first-base side.
- 22:27No ball, two strikes. The count remaining on Randy Jackson.
- 22:32Two out.
- 22:35Sidearm pitch is upstairs.
- 22:44Number two, Randy Jackson to play.
- 22:48We're in the second inning.
- 22:50There are two out. There is no score.
- 22:53Sidearm is swung on. Broken batter Roller down to third. Jones off to his left.
- 22:56Plays it up to the post. The boots here first, and that's all for Jackson.
- 23:01Second back roller to third base.
- 23:07The hardest and loudest hit ball so far off this guy Robin Roberts with Perillo's drive deep to the wall in left field.
- 23:15Look for the moment as Oaks was all the way out.
- 23:19Let's see. Top of the second is over with nothing across for the Dodgers, and the score at the end of an inning and a half hits the Dodgers nothing.
- 23:26The Pumadoufus Phillies have nothing.
- 23:29You know, fans, the mark of a great pitcher is being able to give the catcher just the kind of a pitch he calls for.
- 23:36And when you think about it, well, that's the same way with brewing beer.
- 23:41The mark of a great brewer is being able to give the customer just the kind of beer he calls for.
- 23:48Well, that's exactly what the Shaper people have been doing for well over a century.
- 23:54You just give the signal for a tall, golden amber glass of Shaper, and you'll get exactly what you like in beer.
- 24:01Yes, sir. The light and dusty flavor you want, but don't always find.
- 24:06You see, that's the way Shaper is brewed.
- 24:09It's brewed carefully, expertly, to develop all the true beer character and smooth, satisfying flavor you expect in beer.
- 24:18Every glass of Shaper beer is right in the strike zone, right there for real lip-smacking enjoyment.
- 24:25Put a cool, foamy glass of Shaper in your hands now. You'll see it's real beer.
- 24:32Second inning, Raposki the batter, and here again is Al.
- 24:36Raposki hits him right-handed.
- 24:39Last year, Rip batted 277, had 11 home runs and 55 runs batted in.
- 24:44Newcom Ready comes to him with a fastball, a little higher for ball one.
- 24:51Last half of inning number two, Raposki to be followed by Jones and then by Stan Lopata.
- 24:59So far, this has turned out to be quite a duel, as far as pitchers are concerned.
- 25:07Newcom Ready comes down one and all with a fastball, and there's a line shot hit into left field.
- 25:12The fastball is chases over near the line in the wall, up with it, fires in, and it's a long single for Rip Raposki.
- 25:35Al and Raposki get the first base blow in the meeting of these two clubs tonight.
- 25:45Coming up now is Jones, third baseman, right-hand hitter.
- 25:50Jones last year hit 277, had 17 home runs and 78 runs batted in.
- 25:57The fastball leads it first. The pitchers make to the plate, the lead of fastball is over for strike one.
- 26:10Lodge is holding the corner at first base on Raposki.
- 26:16Rip's ready to move.
- 26:19Newcom checks him. Now delivers the plate. Jones looks at a slow curve, and that hangs outside.
- 26:25One ball and one strike. Jones checking up signs with Whitlow wide down at third base.
- 26:37Raposki first has his signs also.
- 26:41Walter Moses coaching him off down there. Lodge is holding him on.
- 26:45Newcom delivers, the runner goes, it's a pitch out. Roy Campanella fires down to Gillian, the second baseman.
- 26:50They've got him, and then the ball is stuck.
- 26:56And the safe sign is immediately put on by Hal Dixon.
- 27:05So Raposki draws his light at second base on Jim Gilliam's error.
- 27:11Roy Campanella has fired that ball in there and they had him.
- 27:17Raposki is on at second base. Error on Jim Gilliam. First error of the season.
- 27:28Jones up there with a count of two balls, one strike.
- 27:31Down rides the pitch, swung on, and off to the right field for a base hit.
- 27:35Coming over is Carl Perillo. The run is rounding third and coming in to score.
- 27:40Riding in the second with a double, Jones.
- 27:57At number two, run number one off Newcombe, and the Phillies lead it here in the last half of the second inning.
- 28:05The attitude of one that up in Jones at second base having doubled in the run.
- 28:10And Lope out of the catcher standing in for his first setback in the season.
- 28:14He hit 267 last year, 32 home runs, 95 runs batted in.
- 28:18That's a very severe cut.
- 28:20Here's Fowl-Pips, the first pitch into the ground, so strike one.
- 28:38One to nothing Philadelphia, last half of the second inning.
- 28:42Newcombe to the stretch, the check of the runner at second.
- 28:44One point, Lopata takes, the slow curve is outside.
- 28:51One ball, one strike, the count on catcher stand, Lopata.
- 28:59A single, followed by an error, and then a double to right field by Jones,
- 29:05has scored Philadelphia's first run, and has scored the first run of the ballgame.
- 29:11Lopata strikes a look back at Jones at second, delivers the plate to Lopata on a lead up curve ball,
- 29:16and it's swung on and fouled back to the screen.
- 29:19One ball, two strikes on Stan Lopata.
- 29:24Oh, this could be a hair-raising evening down here at Philadelphia.
- 29:29Hope you've got plenty of shaper on hand.
- 29:31Lean back and relax.
- 29:36Stay right with it.
- 29:39Newcombe's one-two pitch, down the grad, curve ball is high.
- 29:48Two ball, two strike count on Stan Lopata.
- 29:52On deck to go next is Bob Bowman.
- 29:55In case you're just tuned in with us, we're in the last half of the second inning,
- 29:59and the Phillies are leading one to nothing, with Jones at second base, nobody else.
- 30:11Newcombe sets, delivers two-two, there's the pass ball swung on,
- 30:14and Bob Bowman will come to the roof.
- 30:17That's out of play.
- 30:20Two balls and two strikes.
- 30:26In the very first inning, when the Dodgers came to bat,
- 30:30Gilliam flied to right, Somoli lined out to Ashburn and Centner,
- 30:34and Snyder fouled out to third baseman Jones for nothing across.
- 30:38The Phillies went quietly as Ashburn flied to left to Somoli,
- 30:42and Fernandez and Bouschi both struck out.
- 30:46Then the Dodgers went down one, two, three in the second.
- 30:49Pass ball hit down across the carpet to shortstop.
- 30:51The play by Zimmer is to Randy Jackson for the target, third base on the runner coming in.
- 30:55So it's the fielders' choice, cutting Jones down from Zimmer to third baseman Randy Jackson.
- 31:02Very nice play by Lowes-Zimm and by Randy Jackson to get the front runner,
- 31:06and place Lopata on at first base.
- 31:10The hole went away here in the last half of the second.
- 31:13That brings on Bob Bowman, up from Miami.
- 31:19They had six ball games last year for the Philadelphia Phillies, batted 188 for them.
- 31:27Newcomb delivers to this right-hand hitter, pitches outside for ball one.
- 31:33Bowman, for Miami in the International League last year, played 126 games in their outfield, batted 278.
- 31:40Hit 19 home runs for them, had 81 runs batted in.
- 31:48Bowman with a little of the pressure taken off his shoulders now, the front runner having been gotten,
- 31:52looks over at Lopata at first base, then delivers the plate with a sidearm pass ball,
- 31:57and that cracks over the corner for a strike.
- 32:06Bob Bowman, hitting number seven in the order, he's the Philadelphia right fielder.
- 32:11Has a widespread stance, stands about three-quarters deep at the plate with a slightly open stance.
- 32:18Holds that bat way down to the knob.
- 32:25Let up clear ball, he's hung on, hit down to Jackson, he knocks it down as he goes through his left.
- 32:29Zimmer backs him up at the time he gets it, he can make no throw.
- 32:32That'll blow us a single, and we have runners now at first and second.
- 32:45That's at number three.
- 32:47Off Newcomb, all three of them coming here in the second inning.
- 32:51Goal with one-half, the Philadelphia Phillies now have runners at first and second.
- 32:55Their batter is Ted Kizanski, their big tall second baseman, who hits that handed.
- 33:02Last year, Kizanski batted 211.
- 33:07Newcomb checks his runners, delivers, curve ball, Kizanski swings, pops it into right field.
- 33:12Coming on for it is Carl Perillo, and the runners huckle back through their bases to hold on.
- 33:17At number two in the second inning, and the batter coming up now will be Robin Roberts, who in winning 19
- 33:26and losing 18 last year, picked up a batting percentage of 200.
- 33:32He had one home run and eight runs batted in.
- 33:39When Roberts went to Michigan State, it was then college, now university.
- 33:45He was a first baseman and was quite a disappointed young man when his college baseball coach
- 33:52insisted he become a pitcher.
- 33:56Runners at first and second.
- 33:59Pitch, two left-hand hitting Roberts, is low and outside.
- 34:04Call one.
- 34:20Newcomb gets that again, checks his runners at first and second, delivers,
- 34:23Roberts swings, hits the ball right back to the mound.
- 34:25Newcomb smothers it, turns and throws over to first base, and the inning is over.
- 34:33In the second inning, the Phillies pick up one run.
- 34:36There were three base hits.
- 34:38There was one L.I. and there were two men left on.
- 34:40The score at the end of two full innings of play tonight at Connemack Stadium in Philadelphia.
- 34:44The home-standing Philadelphia Phillies have one.
- 34:47The visiting Brooklyn Dodgers have nothing.
- 34:49Now before we get to Jerry, let's pause quickly for station identification.
- 34:53This is the Brooklyn Dodger Radio Network.
- 34:55Dial 1460, WOKO Albany, the capital district's most talked about station
- 35:00with downtown studios in the Hotel Wellington, 831,
- 35:04Teen Time Jam away tomorrow night from 8 until 1030.
- 35:09MGM New York.
- 35:14Well, fans, this is only the beginning for our Dodgers in this opening game business.
- 35:18They've got two more big openers coming up, and these two you folks can enjoy in person.
- 35:24Opening day Thursday at Ebbets Field, another pennant goes up.
- 35:28Newcomb-Rees and Drysdale get special honors.
- 35:31National League Championship rings and watches for all of last year's teams.
- 35:36Everett McCoy sings the national anthem.
- 35:39The 14th Regiment band entertains with a concert.
- 35:42Borough President John Cashmore throws out the first ball.
- 35:45Excitement fanfare and your first National League Baseball of 1957.
- 35:50And then on Easter Monday afternoon, Monday, the opener at Jersey City,
- 35:54music by the Hudson County American Legion Band,
- 35:57national anthem sung by the Jersey City YMCA boys, and a lot of fun over at Jersey.
- 36:02So let's go back to play here now, and here's Al.
- 36:05Roy Campanella standing in, hitting right-handed.
- 36:08Gropich tries a soft curveball and misses with it outside for ball one.
- 36:13Campanella hit 219 last year, it was a rather disappointing year for Roy.
- 36:18But it's hoped that he's in A-1 shape now.
- 36:21He swings on this pitch and hits a high drive to right center field.
- 36:24Bob Bowman back to the scoreboard, leaps up and holds it down right to the scoreboard.
- 36:29The ball was back, but Bowman was able to get under it.
- 36:37Oh, one hop, it's off the third inning, that'll bring along Zimmer.
- 36:43Don Zimmer last year hit 300.
- 36:46And he was sent with the National League Champions, two runs batted in, no home runs.
- 36:53He hit 275 in spring exhibitions and tagged the ball well.
- 36:58Robert Slivers to him, the pitch is outside for ball one.
- 37:03Zimmer, right-hand hitter.
- 37:05If you're keeping score with us tonight, the run,
- 37:08if it's only picked up in the first inning, is not figured to have been earned.
- 37:12It's an unearned run.
- 37:14They lead one-nothing.
- 37:16Robert Slivers, didn't swing, got to get the hole up,
- 37:18but there's a long drive deep into left center field, a well-hit ball,
- 37:23and it is in the left center field, stands for a home run for Don Zimmer to tie up the ball game.
- 37:38Boy, that little fellow really leaned in the button.
- 37:41That's the first hit and the first run off Robert.
- 37:46And I can bet you right now, Mr. Doggett, that the fellow cheering the loudest for this kid who just hit that home run is Captain Pee Wee Reek.
- 37:53Oh, you're right, Al.
- 37:55Sure is.
- 37:58Don Newcomb, feeling better about the entire thing, thank you, is up there right now.
- 38:04Roberts comes in to Newcomb, a big left-hand hitter, and he jumps back to take a fast ball, brushing the chest for ball one.
- 38:13So the Dodgers have begun their home runs free, at least what Manager Walter Alston hopes to be a home run free for 1957.
- 38:24Fast ball to Newcomb is high, in account, it's two balls, no strikes.
- 38:30Well, let's see, prior to the one that was just hit by Don Zimmer, the National League had posted four home runs for their openers today.
- 38:40Thomas hit one for Pittsburgh, Logan hit one for Milwaukee, and Bobby Smith and Wally Moon hit for the St. Louis Cardinals.
- 38:48Right on fast ball, Newcomb tips it from foul.
- 38:54Big Newcomb's got two balls and one strike.
- 38:57Boy, I bet you the happiest guy in the world is that Don Zimmer sitting down on that bench right now.
- 39:04He was all grinning ear to ear.
- 39:08Just as happy as he can be, just as happy as you can be too if you just pour that glass of Schaeffer out and enjoy it and the ball game at the same time.
- 39:21That Schaeffer is a real bear.
- 39:26Two ball, one strike count.
- 39:29Robert delivers, Newcomb swings, and Potter's one to center field, Ricky Ashburn going back, Bill going back, reaches up in the night and halts it down.
- 39:38Two down in the third inning.
- 39:41The Dodgers, they've scored one time to tie it up.
- 39:44Don Zimmer leaning into one, hitting a home run.
- 39:50We had occasion tonight to ask Don Zimmer in an interview
- 39:56standing in against a fellow who was throwing that fast ball at him, bothered him because of the two beatings he'd previously had.
- 40:02He said, no, it didn't. He proved it tonight.
- 40:05Jim Gilliam up there swings on the first pitch and hits a high fly ball to deep right field.
- 40:09Bob Bowman back on the cinder track, halts it in.
- 40:15All the Dodgers here in the top half, the third inning, tie it up.
- 40:18One run, one hit. Don Zimmer's home run.
- 40:22The Dodgers, nobody left on.
- 40:26The score at the end of two and one half, it's a play.
- 40:28Here's Kynermack Stadium in Cunhaidulphia.
- 40:30It's the Brooklyn Dodgers one, the home-standing Cunhaidulphia Phillies have one.
- 40:35Well, say, Jerry, what do you think baseball is such a popular sport?
- 40:40Oh, there are a lot of reasons, Al, but I guess we all add up to one thing.
- 40:44People enjoy it.
- 40:46You know, you can say the same thing about Schaeffer beer.
- 40:50There are a lot of reasons why it's good and people really enjoy it.
- 40:53Oh, sure, it's just pure pleasure made out of the finest natural ingredients,
- 40:59including rich barley malt and the most delectable hot blossoms grown.
- 41:04And it's made in a slow, careful way by skilled brewmasters.
- 41:08It's packed with all of Schaeffer's 115 years of experience, too, Jim.
- 41:12Boy, it's got flavor, man, and that light, dusty, exciting flavor you always want but don't always find.
- 41:19And no wonder people enjoy it.
- 41:21It's beer at its best.
- 41:23So, brother, why don't you join the happy throng?
- 41:26Try Schaeffer beer.
- 41:28You'll enjoy it.
- 41:29You'll always enjoy Schaeffer beer.
- 41:32It's real beer.
- 41:34Well, the Dodgers had the long-range artillery going that time against Mr. Robin Roberts.
- 41:40Two fly balls deep to right, one deep to center,
- 41:43and one lost in the left field stands in a tied-up ball game at one and one.
- 41:48So we're ready to play now on the bottom of the third and right back to Al.
- 41:55In the last half of the third inning, it'll be the lead-out man for the Philadelphia Phillies,
- 41:59Richie Ashburn starting the second batting goal round.
- 42:02Ashburn flies the left in the first.
- 42:05The fastball fired to the left-hand hitter is inside off the hips for ball one.
- 42:10The second batting.
- 42:26Wilcoms set.
- 42:28Delivers Richie Ashburn, takes the fastball, fired through at the knees,
- 42:31and is countered with one ball, one strike.
- 42:34Randy Jackson playing up tight at third base.
- 42:39He's guarding against the bunch.
- 42:43That field stands slightly around the left and playing rather shallow.
- 42:48Newcomb delivers one-one, led a fastball, and hit fast them out on the second base.
- 42:52Gilliam gobbles it up, fires over to first in time, and Richie Ashburn is up.
- 42:57So in the bottom of the third inning, one out for the Phillies,
- 43:01and coming up will be Chico Fernandez, struck out in the first inning for Don Newcomb.
- 43:08Newcomb has two strikeouts, has given up three base hits, has walked nobody.
- 43:15Roberts has given up one hit and one run. That was Zimmer's home run.
- 43:18He's walked nobody and has struck out no one so far.
- 43:22Chico Fernandez, hitting right-handed, takes the fastball,
- 43:25fired through under the letters for strike one.
- 43:30Go balls, one strike.
- 43:44Newcomb takes his shot from Campanella, starts his motion, kicks and throws.
- 43:48Down it comes, overhand fastball, and hit out the right field.
- 43:51Carl Perla, off to his right, comes up three steps, grabs it.
- 43:57Two down, last half of the third inning, the batter now is Ed Boucher.
- 44:01The first baseman struck out in the first inning to retire the side.
- 44:17Ed Boucher standing in, left-hand hitter slightly opens stance down the first baseline.
- 44:22Newcomb pumps once, kicks high and throws a soft curve and floats it right through there for a strike.
- 44:31Newcomb gave him all the motion in the world, no speed whatsoever.
- 44:36Just got it up there.
- 44:43Two down, last half of the third, no baserunners.
- 44:46Fills one, the Dodgers one.
- 44:48Sidearm fastball, that's right under the chin, Boucher hits through the dirt.
- 44:59Tomorrow, an open date for the Brooklyn Dodgers, but on Thursday, oh, that's it, opening day at Ebbets Field.
- 45:07Pittsburgh Pirates are in town, they want those Giants today.
- 45:12Let up pitch is low and outside, count of two balls, one strike now, one Boucher.
- 45:20Final score of that ball game was Pittsburgh 9 and New York 2 and Antonelli was the losing pitcher.
- 45:26Antonelli, Grissom, and Jones worked in that one and Bob Friend went all the way for the Pirates.
- 45:30Thomas hit a home run for the Buccos.
- 45:34So he got himself started in the right direction too.
- 45:37This is like Zimmer, let up pitch, swung on and foul-tipped.
- 45:42Two balls and two strikes to count on first baseman Boucher and the number three hitter in the Philadelphia order.
- 45:48The bases are empty in the last half of the third inning.
- 45:53Philadelphia drew first blood tonight with an unearned run in the second inning.
- 45:58Zimmer went right back out and got it back for Brooklyn.
- 46:02A field run into the left center field stands.
- 46:07Home run, two-two pitch, Boucher takes home strike three.
- 46:12Fired right in off the fist.
- 46:15So that's all for Philadelphia in the last half of third inning.
- 46:20And for Newcomb the third strikeout.
- 46:22Score at the end of three, Philadelphia one and Brooklyn has one.
- 46:26The Milwaukee Braves behind Warren Spahn beat the Chicago Cubs 4-1.
- 46:31For Milwaukee four runs, eight hits no errors.
- 46:33And Chicago one run, four hits one error.
- 46:36Reisch, Stratt, Valentinetti for Chicago and Spahn all the way for Milwaukee.
- 46:42Johnny Logan a home run for the Braves and the sixth with one on.
- 46:46And St. Louis, Clobbert, Sintonetti 13-4 as Herm Wehmeyer went all the way against Johnny Klippstein, Fowler, Gross, Freeman.
- 46:54Bobby Smith a home run and the sixth one on for St. Louis.
- 46:57Wally Moon on the eighth with two on.
- 46:59And 15-17-0 for St. Louis, 4-8-1 for Cincinnati.
- 47:04In the American League the Yankees beat Washington 2-1, two runs, seven hits one error.
- 47:09For the Yanks and one run, six hits one error for Washington was forward against Stops.
- 47:14And Boston beat Baltimore 4-2, Chicago beat Cleveland 3-2, and Kansas City beat Detroit 2-1.
- 47:20That's the scores on the Shaper scoreboard now back to play and here again is Al.
- 47:24And then they top half of the fourth inning, Gino Simoli who lines sharply to center field to Richie Ashburn in the first inning comes up for his second at bat in 57.
- 47:32Roberts crossfires him and misses low and outside, football one.
- 47:37Gino Simoli to be followed by Snyder and then by Perillo.
- 47:47Roberts back with an overhand curve ball and Simoli punches at it and pops it back foul.
- 47:56One ball and one strike on Simoli.
- 47:59The totals at the end of three innings, both from Adelphia one run three hits, no errors for the Dodgers, one run one hit one error.
- 48:07All tied at one apiece.
- 48:11Gino Simoli, up there is the leadoff man in the fourth.
- 48:15Roberts with a slow curve, middle outside, two balls and one strike.
- 48:22The outfield for Simoli, unless the word has gotten around, they're playing him deeper than they would have played him last year.
- 48:30The 2-1 delivery to Gino, fastball, Gino wraps it, a line shot right into the glass of second base from Kazansky who makes a nice leaping catch.
- 48:37One out, top half for fourth inning.
- 48:40Gino Simoli hits the ball well but he's hit it right at somebody. Here's Duke Snyder.
- 48:45The curve is over but low to Duke for ball one.
- 48:50Snyder retires to the side in the first inning fouling out the third baseman Willie Jones.
- 49:06Swings on the next pitch and fouls it back off Lopata's shin guard.
- 49:10One ball and one strike is the count now on Snyder.
- 49:14Last year Snyder had a grand total of 43 home runs, a hit and 101 runs, about a 2-92 and against Philadelphia hit 2-77.
- 49:27Roberts tries the fastball and misses low and outside to a left hand hitter.
- 49:32Two ball, one strike count on the Duke. One out, top of the fourth, no base runners, all locked up at one apiece.
- 49:40Schaefer Beer, very happy to be sending it to you.
- 49:44From Karnimak Stadium in Philadelphia, Roberts pitches, lead up is high.
- 49:50Snyder's count, three balls and one strike.
- 49:57Thursday the opener at home, then Saturday, that's ladies day, Pittsburgh and Sunday, big double hitter.
- 50:04Pittsburgh's viral.
- 50:07It's a swung on by Duke.
- 50:09D.C. Billabee, Snyder swings, there's a line drive over the outstretched rubble of the first base from Fuchsia into the corner.
- 50:15Joe Snyder's digging for second. He tries, he's in there with a double.
- 50:20A double rips up the right field side.
- 50:23Snyder's on the second base with a second hit off Robin Roberts.
- 50:29That bushy went up as far as he could go. Ball just over his fingertips.
- 50:37The ball hits off Robin Roberts, has an extra base blow.
- 50:42Don Zimmer's home run with one out, nobody on in the third inning.
- 50:47And it was hit with a 40 into the left center field stand.
- 50:51Now Snyder's ripper up the right field side for two.
- 50:55The batter is called Perillo, who almost hit a home run in the second inning.
- 50:59Slight deep to left.
- 51:01Roberts ready, delivers, sidearm curve ball and Perillo hammers it out into the right center field.
- 51:05That could be in the alley into the scoreboard.
- 51:07It is up against the scoreboard. Perillo's digging for second.
- 51:10Snyder's loafing around 30, coming on in to score.
- 51:13And it's a two to one ball game in favor of the Dodgers.
- 51:17Perillo doubles up the alley and right center to the scoreboard.
- 51:20So give him the run battered in.
- 51:25That is hit number three of Roberts.
- 51:29Run number two and the Dodgers lead it, two to one.
- 51:39With Perillo in pretty good scoring position in second base,
- 51:41Giel Hodges is going to fly ball to center field to Richie Ashburn in the second.
- 51:46Coming up for his second at bat.
- 51:51Roberts checks Perillo at second, delivers a plate.
- 51:53Hodges takes the sweeper over for a strike.
- 52:09Roberts right back with a lead up curve.
- 52:11That snaps off outside.
- 52:14Two to one ball and one strike.
- 52:16That's the count on Hodges.
- 52:19Quite an opener in Philadelphia tonight.
- 52:29The 82nd year of National League players.
- 52:33Shot arm curve is outside.
- 52:35Ball two, the count on Hodges two and one.
- 52:39Of course as far as age is concerned,
- 52:42they haven't begun to match up with Schaeffer.
- 52:46They've been going 115 years.
- 52:49That's real bear too.
- 52:54That's his oldest son.
- 52:55Side arm curve just outside the Hodges for ball three.
- 52:59Down the bullpen, got some Philadelphia activity.
- 53:02Got a right hander up there throwing.
- 53:11In the combo Jim Hearn, formerly with the Giants.
- 53:15Now Roberts ready.
- 53:17Side arm pack ball and Hodges trots at it
- 53:19and dribbles it up the third base line foul.
- 53:22Three balls and two strikes.
- 53:26Two to one the score, the Dodgers lead it.
- 53:29The Philly scored an unearned run in the second.
- 53:33And the third with one out, nobody on.
- 53:35Jim are hitting number eight in the Dodger order.
- 53:37The rifle one in the left center field stands to tie it up.
- 53:41And here in the fourth inning with one out,
- 53:43Snyder doubled down the right field line and Prillo hit him home.
- 53:48The pitch is hung on the Hodges.
- 53:49There's a long drive deep in the left field.
- 53:51It's starting to slice off now and goes foul.
- 54:03Oh yes Mr. Doggett, I would say that when they do get the number
- 54:06on the ball here tonight, they're really spanking it.
- 54:13Three hits, the Dodgers possess.
- 54:15All of them extra base flow.
- 54:16It's a home run and two doubles.
- 54:19Off Prillo stepping off at second base, one out.
- 54:22Roberts delivers a side arm pitch and Hodges starts to go,
- 54:26checks himself in time and takes the pitch low for ball four.
- 54:30Oh there's the first free ticket.
- 54:32Roberts tops it up.
- 54:36Two to one favor the Brooklyn Dodgers here in the top half
- 54:40for fourth inning.
- 54:41Randy Jackson hit a ball wide of third and Jones made a nice stop
- 54:46and threw him out.
- 54:47Jackson is coming up now for his second at bat.
- 54:51One out, runners at first and second.
- 54:56Campanella on deck to follow.
- 54:59Roberts in a jam.
- 55:01Jim Hearn in the Philadelphia bullpen.
- 55:03There's a side arm curve.
- 55:04Jackson laid in there for a strike.
- 55:16Roberts takes his time for Umbo Pata.
- 55:19Hodges leading off at first, Prillo at second.
- 55:22Side arm press ball is dribbled up the third base line.
- 55:26Top roller, that's foul.
- 55:29Jones picks it up and fires it back to the mound to Roberts.
- 55:34Old 36, Robin Roberts.
- 55:39Began his organized baseball career in 1948.
- 55:43Wilmington in the interstate league.
- 55:53Came right up in 48 with some of the other two.
- 55:56Jackson after the next pitch hit the foul ball to the light tower
- 55:59off the first base side.
- 56:00It's up on top of the roof.
- 56:02Jackson's counter strike two.
- 56:12As to this guy, Roberts has been a fixture with the Philadelphia Phillies
- 56:15since 1948.
- 56:17He's played in 20 games for them.
- 56:19He's been grinding them out ever since.
- 56:21Fires in there and Jackson again dribbles it away,
- 56:24again up the third base side, foul.
- 56:28Downholes right on to Randy, strike two.
- 56:32Top of the fourth inning, one out.
- 56:34Schneider doubled down the right field side right along the line
- 56:37over first base.
- 56:39And Prillo hit one up the alley and right center to the scoreboard
- 56:41for a couple and that got Schneider home.
- 56:44Prillo was on at second.
- 56:47And Hodges is on at first now having been walked on the free two pitch.
- 56:54Roberts ready, checks up with the runners, delivers.
- 56:57Jackson takes outside for one.
- 57:05Jim Herring continues to crank up down on the sum of the out your bullpen.
- 57:09It isn't too often you see somebody backing up Robin Roberts.
- 57:13Usually it's Roberts backing up somebody else.
- 57:16One-two delivery.
- 57:18A low curve ball outside.
- 57:21No matter how you get down to the knee to block it, that's ball two.
- 57:25Got on Jackson, two balls, two strikes.
- 57:27Two on, number two at bat.
- 57:30And the score is two to one in favor of the Dodgers.
- 57:34Now let's see what Roberts offers up to Jackson, right hand hitter.
- 57:38The two-two pitch.
- 57:40Down it comes, Jackson swings on it and pops it up.
- 57:43This one in foul ground off to the left of the plate coming down is Jones.
- 57:47And Jones has it.
- 57:52That's the second Dodger out in the fourth inning.
- 57:56Dan Lopata could have handled that also, but Jones had a better shot at it
- 57:59and Lopata kept calling him on to take it.
- 58:02Jones did.
- 58:05It's about an Osroy Campanella.
- 58:08Campy spanked the ball well in the third inning, his first time up, hit it deep
- 58:13to the right field and Bowman went wandering back by that high board fence,
- 58:18or rather, high fence going to look bored tonight.
- 58:22Haul it in.
- 58:25Sweeping curve ball to Campanella is low and outside.
- 58:29Ball one.
- 58:31Three hundred and twenty-nine feet down the right field line here.
- 58:34Four hundred and forty-four down the left side. Four forty-seven to center field.
- 58:40Bigger sized ball park.
- 58:42Roberts delivers, Campanella takes.
- 58:45That pass ball fired through for a strike.
- 58:48One ball and one strike.
- 58:51To the right side, right center by the forty-two foot scoreboard.
- 58:56Four hundred and five feet.
- 58:59So the outfielders can roam, particularly the center fielder.
- 59:03That's a good one by Campy.
- 59:05One out of it.
- 59:07Royce spinning all the way around, but he didn't get that one.
- 59:11One ball, two strikes.
- 59:13The count on Campanella here in the top half of the fourth inning with two downs,
- 59:16two long, one run scored and the Dodgers leading two to one.
- 59:23Hodges the runner at first, Burlowe the runner at second.
- 59:26Sidearm lit up. One out of it. Strike three.
- 59:31Roberts records his first strike out of the night and gets out of it rather cheaply at that.
- 59:37One run.
- 59:39There were two base hits. There were no errors and two men were left on.
- 59:42So at the end of three and one half inning to play, it's the Brooklyn Dodgers two
- 59:49and the home-standing Philadelphia Phillies have one.
- 59:53End of the last half.
- 1:00:06End of the last half, about inning number four.
- 1:00:08Rip Rapovsky coming up there.
- 1:00:10He's got the first hit off.
- 1:00:12He'll come back in the second inning.
- 1:00:14He'll do a life at second.
- 1:00:16When Gilliam dropped the ball for an error,
- 1:00:20he took the pitch outside on the outside corner for strike one
- 1:00:24and then came in to score the unearned run when Jones doubled the right field.
- 1:00:34Rip Rapovsky, right-hand hitter, seems to carry all of his weight on his right leg,
- 1:00:39leans into the pitch and swings on it,
- 1:00:41brings a high-fly ball into short left center field.
- 1:00:44Comes over and calls for it, waves Somoli away, and Snyder takes it to the out.
- 1:00:50Went out.
- 1:00:51Last half of the fourth inning.
- 1:00:53About an hour's Jones who doubled the right field to drive in, Rip Rapovsky.
- 1:01:02Willie, who started back in 1947 with para-hoes,
- 1:01:06sidearm fastball, swung on, hit down to short, stops in,
- 1:01:09up with it, fires the first base and that's all for Jones.
- 1:01:14So everyone is gathered around at Farsna for that station identification.
- 1:01:19This is a Brooklyn Dodger radio network.
- 1:01:22Style 1460 WOKO Albany, the capital district's most talked-about station
- 1:01:27with downtown studios in the Hotel Wellington.
- 1:01:30It's now 9 o'clock WOKO time.
- 1:01:32Team time jamboree tomorrow night from 8 until 1030.
- 1:01:39Labatta to play now with two down, nobody on to Stan Lopata.
- 1:01:43Right-hand hitter batting from a crouched take to curve,
- 1:01:46low and outside for ball one.
- 1:01:51Labatta was a base runner and a second on a fielder's choice
- 1:01:53when Zimmer came up with his hard smash at shortstop
- 1:01:56and fired to Randy Jackson at third base for the tag out
- 1:02:00and Jones trying to move over to third.
- 1:02:04The one man nothing delivery to Lopata is taken, low and outside for ball two.
- 1:02:10We said we'd tell you why we always alerted the boys around the network.
- 1:02:13I can remember many times going down the hall for a glass of water or something
- 1:02:20and all of a sudden somebody's singing through the network,
- 1:02:23they're lying in queue and well, there was nobody there to make station breaks.
- 1:02:29The bosses don't seem to like that too well.
- 1:02:32Labatta curve ball is over the load of Lopata, ball three.
- 1:02:37Three balls and no strikes.
- 1:02:50Jerry laughing about that business of the standby identification.
- 1:02:55I bet you've missed more than one dude, Jerry.
- 1:02:57Three nothing delivery, a fast ball to Lopata, inside off the chest for ball four.
- 1:03:04Now with two down, Lopata has walked.
- 1:03:06That'll be the first base on balls given up by Newcomb.
- 1:03:11Beach pitcher and I surrender to base on balls.
- 1:03:15Bob Bowman, right hand hitting right fielder, comes striding up to the plate.
- 1:03:19He's got a single wide of third base.
- 1:03:22Randy Jackson was able to knock it down but he had no play back in the second inning.
- 1:03:29Bob Bowman, aware of number ten.
- 1:03:35Newcomb looks over, first base, then fires to the plate.
- 1:03:39He's fast when he's through there for a strike.
- 1:03:48This is not the only year Bowman has had a look over by Philadelphia.
- 1:03:52You may recall that in 55 he played three games for the Phillies.
- 1:04:00He was Syracuse for 141 ball games in 55, 56, Miami, and Philadelphia for six games.
- 1:04:08Swings on his pitch and hits a line drive in the right field.
- 1:04:11Perillo comes in to play it on the skip.
- 1:04:13Bobopata goes to second base and holds on quickly as Perillo's throw comes into Jim Gilliam.
- 1:04:20Long and a single in the right field.
- 1:04:23Well, the Phillies are trying to get their way back into this one in the last half of the fourth inning.
- 1:04:29They have two down, two on, and the batter is Ted Kizansky.
- 1:04:33Ted's fly to right field in the second inning. He's 0-1 tonight. He's sort of a pesky type.
- 1:04:43Another product is Sarah Holt, where he started his baseball career in the free-eye league.
- 1:04:49That was back in 51.
- 1:04:54Climbed up to Philadelphia in as early as 53.
- 1:04:57It's all skinny right-hander.
- 1:04:59Newcomb delivers a fast ball and hits up inside third down into corner for a base hit.
- 1:05:04Bobopata comes in to score the tie-up.
- 1:05:06Somali is up for the ball, throws it into third base.
- 1:05:09But Foreman slides in there, moving around from first.
- 1:05:14On the single to left field.
- 1:05:16So it's all tied up.
- 1:05:24Run number five, run number two of Newcomb.
- 1:05:43Robin Roberts gets a round of applause.
- 1:05:56All tied up to a base. Runners are first and third and two down.
- 1:06:00First pitch to Roberts. Low, ball one.
- 1:06:23Down comes a pitch to Roberts. Makes it a flow, that's ball two.
- 1:06:32Another wing ding going here tonight.
- 1:06:48The ball game has been tied up and the situation has been set up after two were down here in the fourth inning.
- 1:06:53Roberts waiting, but do nothing delivery to him.
- 1:06:55Roberts swings, hits a fly ball deep to right field.
- 1:06:58Good going back, still going back. That's getting us off the wall.
- 1:07:19Down in the Brooklyn bullpen, right-hander Don Fetton gets up and starts to work in a hurry.
- 1:07:45Three runs have been scored here by the Fills in the fourth inning as they come roaring back to take the lead now.
- 1:07:52Four to two. Four runs on six hits up, Big Newb.
- 1:07:57The Dodgers two runs on three hits.
- 1:08:05Robin Roberts is second.
- 1:08:07Not the drifty Ashburn.
- 1:08:09He's also true tonight.
- 1:08:12Newcomb ready, delivers a soft curve and Ashburn takes it low inside for ball one.
- 1:08:32Ashburn right foot forward to the plate, actually ahead of it.
- 1:08:36Roberts leads off second, Newcomb checks in, delivers a fast ball and Ashburn takes it across at the knees for a strike.
- 1:08:44One ball and one strike.
- 1:08:57It's off to the second time in tonight's ball game. The Philadelphia Phillies are leading it.
- 1:09:01Now four to two in their favor.
- 1:09:04Newcomb checks up at second, then delivers a soft curve.
- 1:09:07It slips over the outside twice at the knees for a ball strike two.
- 1:09:12Ashburn turns around and mumbles something to play down by our dusty buckets.
- 1:09:25Sixth man have come to bat in the fourth inning.
- 1:09:28This is the seventh.
- 1:09:32The Philadelphia Phillies have scored three times.
- 1:09:36Three base hits.
- 1:09:38Newcomb fast ball and Ashburn swings on it and lines it down the left field line small.
- 1:09:47Three hits and a walk mat mixed in there with a fast ball.
- 1:09:52And given the Philadelphia Phillies their opportunity, they seize the bonnet and it's now four to two.
- 1:10:01That's Mayor Smith's charges.
- 1:10:05Now the four to two counts.
- 1:10:07Let's see if it changes.
- 1:10:09Soft curve ball is coming on and lined up to right field.
- 1:10:11Cruller coming on, makes the grab.
- 1:10:14So Ashburn is up.
- 1:10:16Signing out to Carl Cruller on right field.
- 1:10:19So three big runs for Philadelphia on three base hits.
- 1:10:24There was a man left with no errors.
- 1:10:26There was one fast ball.
- 1:10:28Now the score at the end of four full innings are played.
- 1:10:31The Philadelphia Phillies have four.
- 1:10:34The Brooklyn Dodgers have two.
- 1:10:41Well the first half of this game was brought to you by the F&M Schaeffer Brewing Company of Brooklyn.
- 1:10:46Brewers of Schaeffer beer, America's oldest lager beer.
- 1:10:51Now your host for the next five innings will be Lucky Strike.
- 1:10:55The best tasting cigarette you ever smoked.
- 1:10:58It's made by the American Tobacco Company.
- 1:11:01Tobacco is our middle name.
- 1:11:05Well folks you're going to enjoy baseball a lot more this year at Ebbets Field because of an added attraction.
- 1:11:11Come on out early and see Emmett Kelly, the world's most famous circus clown.
- 1:11:16And now the newest Dodger pumps.
- 1:11:18You'll get a terrific bang out of the circus gag he pulls at Ebbets Field.
- 1:11:22Perhaps you'll meet him personally as he roams around the stands.
- 1:11:26He's a great guy and one of the top comedians of our time.
- 1:11:29Silence Emmett Kelly and his final portal of the sad, forlorn, unwanted circus punk.
- 1:11:35Well he'll beat the Dodger home game at Ebbets Field in Jersey City.
- 1:11:51And now we'll see the Dodger's training in this one.
- 1:11:53They come to bat in the top half of the fifth inning.
- 1:11:55It'll be a little Don Zimmer stepping up there, stepping up to the microphone.
- 1:11:58Boy Lucky Strike into the play-by-play.
- 1:12:00Here's Gary Dawkins.
- 1:12:02Thanks Al and hi again everyone.
- 1:12:04Zimmer steps in, had a home run last time.
- 1:12:06First pitch is full on dribble up the third base line, bounces foul.
- 1:12:09Played by Jones and it's just a long strike for Zimmer.
- 1:12:14Little Don making his big league debut tonight with a home run in the lower stands in the third inning.
- 1:12:20The Dodgers four and the, or two and the Phillies four and the Phillies got three runs in that fourth inning off Dianukum.
- 1:12:29And the Dodgers were real busy against Robin Roberts in the top half of the fourth.
- 1:12:34But left two men stranded.
- 1:12:38The Phillies got their runs in that fourth after two outs.
- 1:12:43Zimmer back with a strike one count.
- 1:12:45Dianukum on deck and then Jim Gilliam to follow.
- 1:12:50Fine crowd on hand tonight at Philadelphia.
- 1:12:53Robbins delivers and it's a little on the outside corner.
- 1:12:57It's the corner for a called strike.
- 1:12:59And on Zimmer it's nothing and two.
- 1:13:02Robin Roberts on the firing line for the Philadelphia Phillies.
- 1:13:06Jones, Fernandez, Kuzanski, and Boussie the infielders.
- 1:13:10Zaboski, Ashford, and Blomman in the outfield.
- 1:13:13There's a curve ball up high and it's ball one strike two.
- 1:13:17One and two to Zimmer.
- 1:13:24The Phillies now have six base hits.
- 1:13:26The Dodgers have three.
- 1:13:30The one-two pitch on the way.
- 1:13:33Outside again with a fast ball and the count even to two-two.
- 1:13:38Two balls, two strikes.
- 1:13:49Number 23, shortstop Don Zimmer.
- 1:13:55Down it comes.
- 1:13:57Curve ball misses again and the count goes full now, three and two.
- 1:14:01So the string is out to Zimmer.
- 1:14:05Jim Gilliam is in the on deck circle off to the right side.
- 1:14:08Newcomb is due next.
- 1:14:10The Dodgers occupy the dugout back of first.
- 1:14:20Here's the pitch to Jim.
- 1:14:22Outside ball four and Zimmer is on with a walk.
- 1:14:26And that is the second walk given up by Robin Roberts.
- 1:14:31So the Dodgers have one on, nobody out and Don Newcomb
- 1:14:34comes up out of the dugout.
- 1:14:36Don hit one deep to center field last time.
- 1:14:47Don Newcomb, number 36.
- 1:14:49On the mound Robin Roberts.
- 1:14:51Likewise, number 36.
- 1:14:58Newcomb swings left.
- 1:14:59Roberts also swings left and Roberts drove in two big runs
- 1:15:02with a double to the right field wall in the bottom of the fourth.
- 1:15:08Four to two, the field's lead.
- 1:15:10Newcomb waiting.
- 1:15:11Runner on first, Zimmer moves off.
- 1:15:13Here's the pitch.
- 1:15:14Going to drive to right field.
- 1:15:16It's going to be in for a base hit.
- 1:15:18Going over to cover it off.
- 1:15:19Here's Zimmer digging for third and is in standing as Newcomb
- 1:15:22rips the single to right field.
- 1:15:24And the Dodgers now are trying to get something going.
- 1:15:28Don Newcomb is first hit for the Dodgers base hit number four.
- 1:15:31Runner's on at first and third and up now will be Jim Gilliam.
- 1:15:38Gilliam has flat out twice to right field of Bob Bowman
- 1:15:41and both times fairly deep.
- 1:15:45Gilliam steps in with two on.
- 1:15:50Nobody out.
- 1:15:51Top of the fifth inning.
- 1:15:54Gilliam's got one in the second and three in the fourth,
- 1:15:57but Dodgers got one in the third and one in the fourth.
- 1:16:01Roberts checks the sign now with catcher Stan Losada.
- 1:16:05Newcomb off first, Zimmer off third, and here's the pitch to Gilliam.
- 1:16:09Pull on him.
- 1:16:10Let's strike one.
- 1:16:17Robin Roberts has one strike out of walk to and is allowed four base hits.
- 1:16:24Sitting doubles for Snyder and Furlough and a homerun by Zimmer.
- 1:16:29Here's a drive to right for a base hit.
- 1:16:31Zimmer into score.
- 1:16:32Newcomb goes to second base to turn and holds on there
- 1:16:35as the Dodgers now pull up a little closer to four to three.
- 1:16:40Gilliam slapping a single to right field.
- 1:16:42His first hit of the game.
- 1:16:44Newcomb into second base.
- 1:16:47Zimmer across the score the third Brooklyn run.
- 1:16:50And again Jim Hearn gets busy on the bullpen for Philadelphia down in left field.
- 1:16:56Up now will be Gino Tremoli and Stan Losada goes to the mound to have a talk with Robin Roberts.
- 1:17:11Jake Settler talking to Gilliam at the first base bag.
- 1:17:16And Billy Herman standing alongside the third base coaching box saying something out to Don Newcomb.
- 1:17:24And now we'll see how the colors are going to play it.
- 1:17:26Lucy and Jones on the corners move in now expecting a bump from Tremoli.
- 1:17:32Newcomb at second, Gilliam at first, edge off to pitch to Gino, butted foul at the plate,
- 1:17:37right in the batter's box.
- 1:17:38Don't fire a dusty bag that picks it up and fires it back out.
- 1:17:43Go to strike one to Gilly, to Tremoli, Gilliam at first and Newcomb is at second.
- 1:17:49Tremoli lined out the center and lined out the second.
- 1:17:52So he's none for two in tonight's game.
- 1:17:55And the Phillies looking for the bunt.
- 1:17:58First and third, second and close, the pitch hung on and fouled up from the wire.
- 1:18:04And it's strike two as Gino had a cut that time and drilled her back foul.
- 1:18:11So now Jones, the third, and Boushey at first will back up.
- 1:18:15Fernandez and Kuzansky play a double play-off that's short and second.
- 1:18:19And the outfield is around to the left of it and deep against Tremoli.
- 1:18:24Gino's got a very fine spring and a very determined effort as one in the left field job,
- 1:18:29at least for the present.
- 1:18:31Here's the O2 look.
- 1:18:32Roberts delivers high and inside the ball on the count one and two to Tremoli.
- 1:18:41On deck is Snyder in the hole for Rillo.
- 1:18:49Four to three.
- 1:18:51Phillies lead and the Dodgers have the tying run on at second.
- 1:18:55The lead run is at first.
- 1:18:58Roberts with the stretch and the look.
- 1:18:59Here's the pitch to Tremoli, breaking ball down and outside and it's ball two.
- 1:19:04Even up now at two and two.
- 1:19:10Two balls, two strikes.
- 1:19:14Tremoli a right end batter.
- 1:19:16Has a close stance, the front foot pointed a little bit toward first.
- 1:19:23Two-two offering.
- 1:19:24Tremoli a drill right back to the middle for a base hit.
- 1:19:29Newcombe turns third, heads home and here's the fill coming in.
- 1:19:31It'll be not in time.
- 1:19:33And on the play Tremoli goes to second.
- 1:19:35Gilliam to third.
- 1:19:36The ball game is tied.
- 1:19:39As Tremoli rips the ground ball right back through the box.
- 1:19:42Newcombe around third and the score from second base on the play.
- 1:19:46Gilliam wants the third and on the throw to the plate.
- 1:19:48Tremoli down to second.
- 1:19:51The ball is going to be a little bit more.
- 1:19:54He's got a brand new one going here and Duke Snatter is that.
- 1:19:57With two on and nobody out for the Dodgers in the fifth inning.
- 1:20:09Go for Tremoli a base hit or run battered in.
- 1:20:13And a four-four ball game with Snatter coming on.
- 1:20:19And a four-four down in the bullpen for the Philadelphia Phillies.
- 1:20:22And Lucky Strike sending you all the action from Cuddymash Stadium in Philadelphia.
- 1:20:27And Duke Snatter is going to get an intentional loss.
- 1:20:32The fans start raising a howl about that.
- 1:20:45That's where the fans really let up a real howl as the Trenors go purposely fast.
- 1:20:54And that will be the third walk given up by Robin Roberts.
- 1:21:07Base is loaded now.
- 1:21:10Snatter purposely fast to load him up and it brings on Ferullo who doubled to the scoreboard
- 1:21:16and right center and drove in a run in the fourth inning.
- 1:21:24Roberts in a jam.
- 1:21:26Dodgers have two in and three on and none out.
- 1:21:32Ferullo had a real fine spring and has one for two tonight.
- 1:21:35It's going to be a long five ball to right center field.
- 1:21:40Ripping over for it at Dysbren.
- 1:21:41Runners are tagged.
- 1:21:42Here's the grab and in the score comes Gilliam going to third and down to second.
- 1:21:47Out of second base is Snatter.
- 1:21:49So the third not in time for Tremoli.
- 1:21:52All the runners were moving and Snatter is caught in the trap going into second base.
- 1:21:57Dysbren's throw came to Ted Kuzminski for the tag out there.
- 1:22:01So Ferullo sacrificed five, gets in a run but it also gets Snatter going to second.
- 1:22:07Dodgers lead five to four.
- 1:22:10Tremoli in the third on the play and across the plate to score with Jim Gilliam.
- 1:22:16No play was made on Gilliam.
- 1:22:17The play was made on Snatter.
- 1:22:20So give Ferullo a sacrifice five.
- 1:22:23And how about that Alan, an RBI for a double play?
- 1:22:27On that case yes.
- 1:22:29Double play for the Fills, eight to four.
- 1:22:34One of the few rare instances when a batter can get a run battered in for a double play ball.
- 1:22:39Sacrifice five by Ferullo and Snatter out going to second.
- 1:22:43Center field to Richie Ispren to the second base from Ted Kuzminski.
- 1:22:47Tremoli on third.
- 1:22:51And the pitch to Hodges.
- 1:22:53Strike one.
- 1:22:54Roberts deals again.
- 1:22:55Gilliam checks up but it's ball one.
- 1:22:58Even up now one-one.
- 1:23:01Three runs in and the Dodgers lead five-four.
- 1:23:07Long fly ball to right center by Ferullo and everybody tried to advance.
- 1:23:11Snatter was out going into second.
- 1:23:15Here's the one-one pitch to Hodges.
- 1:23:17Low and outside.
- 1:23:18Ball two.
- 1:23:19Two and one.
- 1:23:23Tremoli at third.
- 1:23:26Double play, Brooklyn batting in the fifth.
- 1:23:33The hits in the game were all even now.
- 1:23:35That's six a piece.
- 1:23:36They run five-four Dodgers.
- 1:23:38The pitch.
- 1:23:40Roll foul off to the left out of play and it's turned to on Gill Hodges.
- 1:23:47Jackson on Beck and Roy camping under the follow so they can keep it going.
- 1:24:09Line up and pitch.
- 1:24:11Up high, outside, ball free, a full count now to Hodges.
- 1:24:25Gill waiting.
- 1:24:27Tremoli wandering off third a few steps.
- 1:24:29The pitch then is four on him.
- 1:24:31Strike three.
- 1:24:32Dropped by Lopato but he tags Hodges in time for the out.
- 1:24:36So Roberts gets his second strike out.
- 1:24:39And the Dodgers go down in the fifth inning.
- 1:24:41They show three runs on three bases.
- 1:24:45No errors and add one man left.
- 1:24:48So at the end of the top of the fifth inning the score, the Dodgers five, the Phillies have four.
- 1:24:54Well, fans, here's a word picture of real smoking enjoyment.
- 1:24:58Yes, sir.
- 1:24:59All it takes is you, your lighter, and a lucky.
- 1:25:03Then light up.
- 1:25:05Man, you'll find there's nothing like a lucky because it's all cigarettes, all fine tobacco,
- 1:25:11mild, naturally good tasting tobacco that's supposed to taste even better.
- 1:25:16Try a pack of lucky.
- 1:25:17Better yet, make it a carton.
- 1:25:20One thing's for sure.
- 1:25:22You'll say it's the best tasting cigarette you ever smoked.
- 1:25:29Light up a lucky. It's light up time.
- 1:25:35Be happy. Go lucky. It's light up time.
- 1:25:42For the taste that you like.
- 1:25:46Light up a lucky strike.
- 1:25:50You'll say it's the best tasting cigarette you ever smoked.
- 1:25:57Well, everybody, we're very happy tonight to be able to salute our honor hospital,
- 1:26:03the VA hospital at Sun Mountain, New York, with a quota of 10,000 free luckies being earmarked for them
- 1:26:10and some of the near marks.
- 1:26:12We've had a home run. We've had a double play.
- 1:26:14So the ball had already been started.
- 1:26:16Fellas and gals, it's hang right on. More coming.
- 1:26:19More play by play, too, and here's Jere.
- 1:26:21Chico Fernandez first batter up to be followed by Ed Boucher and then Rip Raposte.
- 1:26:26Newcomb delivers and Chico takes it up high, ball one.
- 1:26:30Fernandez is struck out and flying to right in two trips tonight.
- 1:26:35Five to four, Dodgers lead, each side with six base hits.
- 1:26:38The Phillies get three hits in the second and three more in the fourth.
- 1:26:41Dodgers get one hit in the second, two in the third, two in the fourth, and three in the fifth.
- 1:26:49Here's a fastball for a strike on the outside corner.
- 1:26:52Here's to Fernandez, one and one.
- 1:26:56Chico hitting in the number two spot.
- 1:27:02And is destined, of course, to become the regular shortstop for Philadelphia,
- 1:27:06getting the opening night bid here.
- 1:27:12One-one, wind up and pitch.
- 1:27:14Foul ball straight back on the count goes to one and two.
- 1:27:18Has a fine crowd on hand tonight at County Mac Stadium in Philadelphia,
- 1:27:22and this could be an opening night, opening day attendance record for Philadelphia.
- 1:27:27The previous record was 29,074 set in 1950 in a ballgame with the Dodgers.
- 1:27:37And we don't see too many empty seats here tonight.
- 1:27:40Here's a foul ball upstairs off to the right,
- 1:27:43with a count on Fernandez stays at a ball and two strikes.
- 1:27:48So just to remind you to be out Thursday when the Dodgers open up against the Pirates
- 1:27:57that have a field Thursday afternoon.
- 1:28:02Big Don winds and fires.
- 1:28:05A roller hit off the third baseline.
- 1:28:07Newt comes up with it.
- 1:28:09Not in time, Fernandez legs it out for a base hit.
- 1:28:14Long and captive along the third baseline, and before Newcomb could make the play,
- 1:28:19Fernandez had his feet out.
- 1:28:21So Chico, who is very fast, legs one out, hits number seven for Philadelphia,
- 1:28:27and he brings on Ed Boushie, the first baseman.
- 1:28:31He has struck out twice.
- 1:28:33Left hand hitter.
- 1:28:35Newcomb has three strikeouts and Roberts has two.
- 1:28:39Newcomb has walked one, Roberts has walked three.
- 1:28:41One of those was an intentional fast slider.
- 1:28:46So the Phillies now come right back in the fifth inning and put the tying run on.
- 1:28:50It's Fernandez dribbles in up the third baseline for a base hit.
- 1:28:54Newcomb now out of a stretch delivers.
- 1:28:56Passball comes in tight.
- 1:28:58Ball one to Boushie.
- 1:29:04Rip Leposki is on deck with Willie Jones down in the hole.
- 1:29:15Now again, Newcomb ready.
- 1:29:17Eyes Chico at first.
- 1:29:20Bichit's pulling and dribbling along the right field line for a base hit.
- 1:29:23Fair ball into the bullpen.
- 1:29:25Fernandez coming around second, heads for third, around third, and in the score,
- 1:29:29Lucina heads for third.
- 1:29:31The relay from Gilliam is not in time and the ball game is tied up.
- 1:29:46Ed Boushie building a line drive down the right field line, fair ball about two feet.
- 1:29:52Then it's peeled off into the Dodger bullpen and before Ferilla can make the play,
- 1:29:56Boushie has come around to third and Fernandez has scored a tie up.
- 1:30:02Now the go-ahead run is the third and Hodges comes over to the mound to talk to Don Newcomb.
- 1:30:11Hit number eight for Philadelphia and Don Besson now gets busy again on the Dodger bullpen down in the right field.
- 1:30:19Rip Rapulski will be up, Willie Jones to follow and Stan LaFont after that.
- 1:30:26So Roberts and Newcomb having a little tough time driving here tonight.
- 1:30:31Big Don, wide and fires, infield in a pop foul, back over the top, strike one.
- 1:30:38The entire infield with the exception of Zimmer playing it upside and Don lays back about three steps.
- 1:30:47Strike one count on Rapulski and this is now able to develop into a real old-fashioned scoring bee here tonight.
- 1:30:56Newcomb, wide and fires.
- 1:30:59Pull on a miss, strike two.
- 1:31:05Rip Rapulski to clean up batter and left fielder.
- 1:31:16Strike two count, Dodger infield up tight and rolled the runner at third.
- 1:31:22Ed Boushie who triples to drive in Fernandez and fire up.
- 1:31:27Big Don, wide and fires to Rapulski.
- 1:31:30Fastball is outside, ball one.
- 1:31:33One and two.
- 1:31:40One ball, two strikes.
- 1:31:45Very enthusiastic crowd here tonight at County Mac Stadium.
- 1:31:48They're really whooping it up.
- 1:31:55Now the one-two pitch.
- 1:31:58Just look at that side and the county even gets going too.
- 1:32:11Don Bechman firing away on the Dodger bullpen in right field.
- 1:32:22The two-two pitch to Rapulski.
- 1:32:25Drop foul off to the left of the plate and the count stays there at two and two.
- 1:32:32Dodger's five, totally spying at County Mac Stadium in Philadelphia.
- 1:32:39Roberts against Newcomb and the hitters so far have dominated the ballgame up to this point.
- 1:32:50Here's the windup and the two-two pitch.
- 1:32:52Bull running, stop foul again at the plate.
- 1:32:54Campanova picks it up.
- 1:32:58Newcomb retired the first three men to base him and then was tied for a base hit and a run in the second.
- 1:33:05Roberts retired the first seven men before Zimmer hit a home run to tie it up.
- 1:33:11And from that point on, the hitters have taken over.
- 1:33:16Newcomb had a one-two-three inning in the third.
- 1:33:21Here's the two-two pitch.
- 1:33:23Change up, bounce to third.
- 1:33:25Jackson up with it, holds the runner.
- 1:33:27Throws to first in time and it's one away.
- 1:33:29Rapulski bounces out third to first.
- 1:33:33Now it will be Willie Jones.
- 1:33:35He doubled in the second, rounded out in the fourth.
- 1:33:37And while Willie steps in, we'll take a few seconds for station identification.
- 1:33:42This is the Brooklyn Dodger Radio Network.
- 1:33:45Dial 1460 WOKO Albany, the Capital District's most talked about station with downtown studios in the Hotel Wellington.
- 1:33:53933 WOKO time.
- 1:33:57Team time jamboree tomorrow night from 8 until 1030.
- 1:34:02Willie Jones up and in.
- 1:34:05One for two tonight.
- 1:34:07And the Dodgers play it up close again with one out.
- 1:34:10Newcomb goes to the lineup and delivers.
- 1:34:12Passball outside, all one.
- 1:34:17Atfield stated to the left now against the right-hand batter.
- 1:34:23Infield up close, Gilliam back a couple steps.
- 1:34:25And Zimmer at third is back about three steps, rather at short.
- 1:34:28And Jackson at third is back about two.
- 1:34:31So they give a little against Jones.
- 1:34:34Newcomb delivers low and it's ball through.
- 1:34:40Five-five score, bottom of the fifth inning.
- 1:34:45And the Phils and the Dodgers have an edit on opening night.
- 1:35:00Newcomb into the lineup and down it comes.
- 1:35:03Curveball, top-draught foul.
- 1:35:05That is the plate, Campanella grabs it.
- 1:35:07And it's two balls, one strike.
- 1:35:17Two and one.
- 1:35:21As far as the eye can see, the fans in this ballpark all the way around.
- 1:35:25Looks like a real capacity crowd.
- 1:35:29Here's the two-one pitch.
- 1:35:31Ground ball hit back behind second through the middle for a play-six.
- 1:35:35The runners end the Phils lead.
- 1:35:37Jones makes a big turn and holds up now with a single to center.
- 1:35:42Ground ball just beyond the outstretched glove of Don Zimmer.
- 1:35:48We see in the score, and it's now six to five Phils, Jones at first base with a single.
- 1:35:55And Stan LaFatta comes on.
- 1:35:59That is hit number nine off Dan Newcomb, three this inning.
- 1:36:04A little older by Fernandez to start it, a triple by Boussé and a ground single by Jones up the middle.
- 1:36:10Stan LaFatta up, there's nothing for one tonight.
- 1:36:12It's a one-shorter run, was on on a field of choice.
- 1:36:17So LaFatta at bat, one out here in the fifth inning.
- 1:36:20Newcomb with a stretch in the pitch.
- 1:36:22Third ball, high five ball to the short left.
- 1:36:25Zimmer backs up.
- 1:36:26Somoli comes on.
- 1:36:27Zimmer waves him off and has it for the up.
- 1:36:30So LaFatta pops out to Zimmer in short left field, two away.
- 1:36:34And here's Bob Bowman, the rookie right fielder who's at two for two.
- 1:36:38And a nice game and a scored one run.
- 1:36:46So with two out, Jones on first.
- 1:36:49The Pills lead six to five.
- 1:36:59Now the stretch by Big Newcomb and the pitch to the plate.
- 1:37:03Curve ball is in for a strike.
- 1:37:05Newcomb has been slowing up a bit in the last couple of hitters,
- 1:37:10leaving the fast ball and going to the breaking stuff.
- 1:37:19Strike one on Bowman, right hand batter.
- 1:37:24Stretch again, but down on the pitch.
- 1:37:25Fast ball there, it's locked to right field.
- 1:37:28Furlough on his tack, moves in two steps now,
- 1:37:30bounds the glove but he has it and the side is retired.
- 1:37:33So for the Pills in the fifth inning, there were two runs picked up.
- 1:37:37On three they hit, no errors and they left one man on.
- 1:37:41So at the end of five, the score, the Phillies six, the Dodgers five.
- 1:37:47Well, we've had five innings of play in this one tonight.
- 1:37:50And here are your totals.
- 1:37:52For Brooklyn, five runs six hits one error.
- 1:37:54For the Phillies, six runs nine hits no error.
- 1:37:57Randy Jackson to the plate to start the six.
- 1:37:59All right, Jerry, ready to go.
- 1:38:01Randy is over two tonight.
- 1:38:03And Robin Roberts on the firing line, but well,
- 1:38:07he's going to have a conference now with catcher Stan Lopata.
- 1:38:29And as Jackson is outside high, ball one.
- 1:38:33Randy over two, Kemp and Alondick and then Don Zimmer to follow.
- 1:38:39And a six to five ball game through the first five.
- 1:38:42Third ball, Mrs. Low, and it's ball two.
- 1:38:46Two and nothing.
- 1:38:54Two-oh count.
- 1:38:56Robin Roberts set the pitch to Jackson.
- 1:39:00And the fastball finds the strike zone on the outside corner.
- 1:39:03It's two and one.
- 1:39:05Two balls, one strike.
- 1:39:12Robin Roberts ready.
- 1:39:13Jackson waiting.
- 1:39:14Two on pitch.
- 1:39:16Pull in and bounce to shortstop.
- 1:39:18Big hop to Fernandez.
- 1:39:19Long throw is in time.
- 1:39:21One away.
- 1:39:23Jackson bounces out, short to first.
- 1:39:28And it brings on Roy Campanella.
- 1:39:31Right out deep to right and struck out in two tries.
- 1:39:36Nine hits for Philadelphia and six hits for the Dodgers.
- 1:39:40And one error in the ball game, Jim Gilliam.
- 1:39:43Drops the throw from Campanella on Rapulki in the second inning.
- 1:39:51Rapulki later scored in what was an unearned run.
- 1:39:56Now Roberts ready to go to Campy.
- 1:39:58Foul ball coming back upstairs and this one is just under the press box.
- 1:40:03Strike one on Campanella.
- 1:40:07Very fine vantage point here at Philadelphia.
- 1:40:11Under the roof, looking right down on the home plate,
- 1:40:14with an angle off on the first face line, looking down the line.
- 1:40:18Rapulki takes a high curve outside and it's ball one.
- 1:40:22One ball, one strike to Campanella.
- 1:40:25Zimmer on deck and then Newcomb to follow.
- 1:40:28The game is in the sixth inning.
- 1:40:33The pitch is fouled off and here comes one up our way, but it's on top.
- 1:40:38And hits the edge of the roof and goes bouncing back downstairs.
- 1:40:42So it is one and two on Campanella.
- 1:40:47One and two the count.
- 1:40:55Here's one right here and bang, just missed.
- 1:41:01Foul ball, Campanella chopping one up here.
- 1:41:05Well, we'd kind of like to get that opening day of baseball souvenir from County Mac Stadium.
- 1:41:10So Mr. Campy, bring it over here about ten feet.
- 1:41:16Here's the pitch.
- 1:41:18Strike three.
- 1:41:20Campy went over, tried to check his swing, the ball tipped off,
- 1:41:23the bat was held on by Lafatta and it's a strike out for Roberts.
- 1:41:28Campanella down on strikes on a foul tip actually.
- 1:41:32And for Roberts, strike out number three.
- 1:41:36And Tiredusty Vargas gave the foul tip sign very quickly.
- 1:41:43The signs dimmer up now, Holman on the walk and Zip the score twice tonight.
- 1:41:50Foul ball hit off to the right and it is the Dodger dugout on the first base guide, strike one.
- 1:42:00The Philly is sixth and the Dodger is five.
- 1:42:05Robin Roberts firing them in.
- 1:42:1037,657.
- 1:42:13We're going to miss for Zimmer strike two.
- 1:42:16So we were close to a record but not quite.
- 1:42:20Wait a minute, over a record, way over it.
- 1:42:2337,000, the record was 29.
- 1:42:25I'll see what he says.
- 1:42:28Well, there's a real fine job.
- 1:42:30That's well over capacity.
- 1:42:32Here's a dry foul down the left field line.
- 1:42:3537,667, the previous record was 29,074.
- 1:42:42So that's a new record by 8,000 plus.
- 1:42:49Fine crowd for the opener tonight.
- 1:42:51Here's the pitch.
- 1:42:53Then swings in with the strike three.
- 1:42:55Down he goes.
- 1:42:56Badly tied.
- 1:42:58Strike out number four for Robin Roberts.
- 1:43:01So for the Dodgers in the sixth inning, free up, free down.
- 1:43:05No runs, no hits, no errors, and none left on.
- 1:43:09So that's the end of the top of the sixth inning of the score and the ball game,
- 1:43:13the Philadelphia Philly sixth, and the Brooklyn Dodgers have five.
- 1:43:19Well stepping up the streak is no other than that baseball great and renowned Brooklyn backstop, Mr. Roy Campanella.
- 1:43:27You know what two questions folks ask me most?
- 1:43:30First is who's the fastest pitcher I've ever caught?
- 1:43:34That's easy, Don Newcomb.
- 1:43:37That man is really quick.
- 1:43:39The second question is do you really smoke Lucky's?
- 1:43:43Of course I do.
- 1:43:44And do you know why I smoke them?
- 1:43:47Because Lucky's tastes better.
- 1:43:49That's all there is to it.
- 1:43:52Well said, Mr. Campanella.
- 1:43:54Makes sense.
- 1:43:56Because Lucky's is a genuine cigarette, all cigarettes, all fine tobacco,
- 1:44:02naturally good tasting tobacco that's toasted to taste even better.
- 1:44:07Take the signal from Roy Campanella and declare a light up sign.
- 1:44:12Be happy, go Lucky, right now.
- 1:44:22Well as we go to the last of the sixth inning it will be Ted Kavinsky, Robin Roberts, and Richie Eispern
- 1:44:27do up there to face Don Newcomb in a six to five ball game going into Philadelphia.
- 1:44:48Okay, Kavinsky up one for two and Big Don ready to fire.
- 1:44:58The lineup and the first pitch.
- 1:45:00Over for a call strike one.
- 1:45:02Good pass ball in the outside corner.
- 1:45:13And ready again gets signed from his teammate Roy Campanella and the pitch to Kavinsky.
- 1:45:22Up high outside for ball and the count goes one-one.
- 1:45:26Jackson came charging in from third that time.
- 1:45:30Halfway expecting Kavinsky to try to punt.
- 1:45:36One-on-one.
- 1:45:38Big Don rocks and fires.
- 1:45:41No curve with upstairs and it's ball two, two and one.
- 1:45:46Jackson, Zimmer, Gilliam and Hodges on the infield.
- 1:45:51Somali, Snyder, and Perillo in the Dodger outfield from left to right.
- 1:46:02The attendance tonight is somewhat over capacity of the ballpark.
- 1:46:06Here's the ground ball backhanded by Jackson at third.
- 1:46:09By the first that's in time, nice play by Randy Jackson.
- 1:46:12Hard smash down there by Ted Kavinsky.
- 1:46:15And Randy just wheeled over and backhanded her and made the play.
- 1:46:21The all-time record in the Philadelphia ballpark was 40,720 against Brooklyn in 1947 for a double header.
- 1:46:31Night game record 40,000 against Cincinnati in 1946.
- 1:46:37And a single day game record 36,765 against Pittsburgh.
- 1:46:44Here's Roberts coming on and gets a nice hand as he steps in.
- 1:46:47Robin helps him stuff in the fourth inning with a double to drive in two runs.
- 1:46:52So Robin Roberts up now swinging from the left side.
- 1:46:55Newcomb goes into the windup band.
- 1:46:57Down it comes.
- 1:46:58A bouncer foul trickles off toward the Dodger bow dug out and it's strike one.
- 1:47:03A rear-fired opening night crowd here at Philadelphia PA.
- 1:47:19There's a long fly ball, a high fly ball to center rather.
- 1:47:23Zimmer going out.
- 1:47:24In for it comes Somoley in left center and he's got it for the out.
- 1:47:29Roberts out on a high pop fly into short left center picked off by Geno Somoley.
- 1:47:38Here's Ashburn coming up now.
- 1:47:39Ritchie is 0-3 in the night's game.
- 1:47:42Line to left, down to the second, line to right.
- 1:47:46Ashburn, nothing for three.
- 1:47:50Nine hits for the Fills, six hits for the Dodgers.
- 1:47:54And a six to five ball game in the bottom of the sixth inning.
- 1:48:03Here's the pitch.
- 1:48:05Fastball high inside, ball one.
- 1:48:19Newcomb checks the sign from Campanella.
- 1:48:24Ashburn waits.
- 1:48:25Curveball is in and over for a strike.
- 1:48:30Count evens at 1-1 on Ashburn.
- 1:48:32There are two outs, none on, six things.
- 1:48:35Lucky strikes sending you play-by-play from County Mac Stadium in Philadelphia.
- 1:48:40The 1957 opener between the Dodgers and the Phillies.
- 1:48:461-1 pitch on the way.
- 1:48:48Ashburn bounces one wide a third.
- 1:48:50Jackson one-handed.
- 1:48:51Play the first in time for the outside retire.
- 1:48:55So that's all for the Fills and in the sixth inning both sides go up and down in order.
- 1:49:00No runs, no hits, no errors, none left on.
- 1:49:02And so at the end of sixth inning to play the score, the Phillies sixth, the Dodgers five.
- 1:49:09Well, let's kind of get up to date here on what happened around and all the other openers around the baseball world today.
- 1:49:15So from the Lucky Strike scoreboard, here's Al.
- 1:49:18Well, otherwise in the National League at Pittsburgh, the Pirates defeated the Giants 9-2 behind Bob Friend.
- 1:49:25Pittsburgh 9 runs, 8 hits, one error.
- 1:49:27Giants 2 runs, 10 hits, three errors.
- 1:49:30Antonelli started, he's the loser.
- 1:49:31Grissom in the eighth and Jones in the eighth.
- 1:49:34Thomas hit a home run his first of the year in the second with nobody on for the Pittsburgh Pirates.
- 1:49:39Milwaukee defeated Chicago 4-1.
- 1:49:41Milwaukee 4 runs, 8 hits, no errors.
- 1:49:43Warren's fallen all the way for the victory.
- 1:49:45Chicago 1 run, 4 hits, one error.
- 1:49:48Rush started, dropped in the seventh and Valentinetti in the ninth.
- 1:49:51Logan hit a home run in the sixth with one to board for the Milwaukee Braves.
- 1:49:56St. Louis defeated Cincinnati 13-4 on 17 hits and no errors.
- 1:50:00Weimar all the way for the St. Louis win.
- 1:50:03Cincinnati 4 runs, 8 hits, one error.
- 1:50:05Slipstein, Fowler in the sixth, Gross in the sixth, Freeman in the eighth.
- 1:50:08Bobby Smith in the sixth with one on, Wally Moon in the eighth with two on, hit home runs for St. Louis.
- 1:50:14The Yankees defeated Washington 2-1.
- 1:50:16The Yankees 2 runs, 7 hits, one error, foured all the way.
- 1:50:19Washington 1 run, 6 hits, one error.
- 1:50:21Sobs all the way to take the loss, the battle of the left handers.
- 1:50:25Severs hit a home run for Washington in the seventh with the bases empty.
- 1:50:28And Barra hit one in the seventh with none on for the New York Yankees.
- 1:50:32Boston defeated Baltimore 4-2.
- 1:50:34Boston 4 runs, 9 hits, no errors.
- 1:50:36Baltimore 2 runs, 9 hits, one error.
- 1:50:38And in 11 innings, Chicago defeated Cleveland 3-2.
- 1:50:41Kansas City defeated Detroit 2-1.
- 1:50:44All right, Jerry.
- 1:50:45Darin Newcomb waits and swings a foul back into the stands, strike one.
- 1:50:50Robin Roberts on the firing line and the Dodgers now come up on the seventh inning, need a run to tie and two to go ahead.
- 1:50:576-5 ball game here at Philadelphia tonight.
- 1:51:02Newcomb has one hit, two tries, singles in the fifth inning and then score the run.
- 1:51:08Takes outside, ball one, McCown evens it 1-1.
- 1:51:13Robin Roberts, who leads all active National League right-handers in career victories with 179,
- 1:51:18tonight is the first player in modern baseball to pitch in eight season openers.
- 1:51:24Fastball back, Newcomb awaits, and there it's ball two, strike one.
- 1:51:30In the seven previous, Roberts has won four and lost three.
- 1:51:34He's beaten Brooklyn three times in opening day efforts.
- 1:51:38The Dodgers have not beaten him.
- 1:51:43There's a pop-up on the first baseline.
- 1:51:45Ed Boussee comes down near the bag, now steps across the line and makes the grab for the out.
- 1:51:51So Newcomb bowels out to the first baseman, Ed Boussee.
- 1:51:55It will be Jim Gilliam who has one hit, three tries.
- 1:52:00Roberts beat the Dodgers 9-1 in 1950 and in 1951, 5-2, last year he beat them 8-6.
- 1:52:08He beat Newcomb twice in 1950 and last year.
- 1:52:19Gilliam waiting, here's the pitch.
- 1:52:22It's close and it's ball one.
- 1:52:25In 1955, Roberts beat the Giants 4-2 and had a no-hitter for eight and one-third innings.
- 1:52:35Here's the pitch.
- 1:52:37Fastball low inside and it's ball two.
- 1:52:42Well, I guess maybe Bob Seller was the last pitcher to pitch an opening day no-hitter, Alan, is that right?
- 1:52:51We don't have none this year either.
- 1:52:53Here's the pitch.
- 1:52:55Bouncer foul up the first baseline and Jake Pitler makes his first play of the new season, lobs it back into Roberts.
- 1:53:08It counts to Gilliam, two balls, one strike, one out, down on top of the seven.
- 1:53:12Bills leads 6-5.
- 1:53:15Roberts into the windup and down it comes.
- 1:53:19Here's a ground ball hit foul down the first baseline, goes all the way to the wall and bounces along and a couple of fans lean out and grab a baseball souvenir for the Knights opener.
- 1:53:34Turn two.
- 1:53:47Here's the pitch to Gilliam.
- 1:53:49Swung right in.
- 1:53:50This one is drilled foul down the right field line and bounces up against the boxy ridding.
- 1:53:57And the count stays at two and two.
- 1:54:00County Mac Stadium is double-decked all the way around.
- 1:54:03There are no stands in right field.
- 1:54:07In other words, the field's surrounded by stands on three sides.
- 1:54:11There's a foul back upstairs up to the first box and it's still two and two.
- 1:54:19The stands go all the way down the left field line to the plate, then all the way down the third baseline, and then all the way across left field at the center field.
- 1:54:30There's nothing in right field except the scoreboard under high wall all the way across.
- 1:54:36There's a drive hit right back to the middle for a base hit.
- 1:54:39Gilliam is on.
- 1:54:41Ashburn Field quickly fires into second base and Jim Gilliam gets a long single into left center field.
- 1:54:49That's for Gilliam, hit number two, and for the Dodgers, number seven.
- 1:54:54And here's Geno Somolia.
- 1:54:56Line to center, line to second, single to center, and drove in a run.
- 1:55:00So Geno has one, four, three in the Knights game.
- 1:55:06Dodger left fielder, one out, one on.
- 1:55:09Roberts now with a stretch to look.
- 1:55:11Here's the pitch to Geno, strike called on the outside corner.
- 1:55:16Fernandez and Kazansky play it in a step or two now and double play it after Jones.
- 1:55:22Fairly close in his third and Busce, of course, holding Gilliam at first base.
- 1:55:29Top of the seventh, one out, one on.
- 1:55:32Roberts deals a swing and a miss, strike two on Geno Somolia.
- 1:55:37Duke's batter on deck and then Kyle for a little follow.
- 1:55:55Oh, two pitch. Sworn and rolled back to the mound, Roberts bare-handed, throws to first base in time and on the play, Gilliam goes into second.
- 1:56:04Roberts slipped and came up from our distance time to bare-hand the ball and make his play to first base.
- 1:56:11Had no chance for a play on Gilliam.
- 1:56:14So the tying run moves to second base and Duke's batter comes on.
- 1:56:17Foul out, doubled to right and was intentionally walked.
- 1:56:25So Snyder up now with Perolo on deck and his second base is Gilliam with two away.
- 1:56:32Six-five ball game in favor of the Philadelphia Phillies over the Dodgers here at County Mac Stadium in Philadelphia.
- 1:56:43Roberts now with a stretch, now delivers fresh ball up high outside, ball one.
- 1:56:52One ball, no strikes on Duke's batter.
- 1:57:08Bow ball right up here underneath the stand, out of play, one-on-one.
- 1:57:14Snyder had another one of his miserable springs hitting 177, but as Duke says, he never hits in the spring, he just waits until the bell rings and then off he goes.
- 1:57:23The only time that he had a good spring, he had a bad season.
- 1:57:28So Duke anxious to get off to a good start here with a season underway.
- 1:57:32Rose one back toward the third base side of the mound, Roberts slips, goes 10 times for the out.
- 1:57:38Nice play by Robin Roberts, who came to the third base line, slips as he grabbed the ball, flew from one knee and got his man for the out to retire the side.
- 1:57:49So that's all for the Dodgers in the seventh inning, no runs, one hit, no errors and one man left on.
- 1:57:57That's the end of the top of the seventh, the score, the Phillies six, the Dodgers five.
- 1:58:04Well, seventh inning stretch, here's Al to tell us all about it.
- 1:58:08Yes sir, that seventh inning stretch is coming right up and hey Jerry, by the way, touch me that cycle, lucky.
- 1:58:14Okay, here you go.
- 1:58:16Ah, thank you.
- 1:58:18Now for a match of tea.
- 1:58:20Oh, you're right here, got a lighter.
- 1:58:30What a cigarette, a genuine cigarette.
- 1:58:34Say, how about joining me?
- 1:58:36Declare a light up sign.
- 1:58:38Put a match to a lucky and then settle back and watch the rest of the ball game and listen to it.
- 1:58:43Enjoy the best tasting cigarette you ever smoked.
- 1:58:54Oh, I like that.
- 1:58:55Yeah, it's good.
- 1:58:57All right, Jerry, I guess we're getting ready for some more action, huh?
- 1:59:01Right over Al, it'll be Chico Fernandez who's scratched single on the third base line,
- 1:59:06started the Phillies off to a two run inning in the fifth, the inning that put them out in front.
- 1:59:14The Phillies scored first in the second, the Dodgers tied it in the third and went ahead in the fourth.
- 1:59:19The Phillies came back a three in the fourth to make it four-two, the Dodgers got three in the fifth to make it five-four.
- 1:59:25The Phillies got two in the fifth to make it six-five and here we are.
- 1:59:29Fernandez up one for three tonight, Ed Boussillon on deck and Rook Rapovsky to follow.
- 1:59:35Newcomb and Roberts have gone all the way.
- 1:59:38In fact, we have not had a lineup change on either side.
- 1:59:42Roberts, one of the line drives, one hop to Zimmer.
- 1:59:46Up with it, play is in time, nice play by Don Zimmer, a line drive, one hop in front of Don, almost handcuffed him.
- 1:59:55He knocked it down, retrieved in time to get the speedy Chico Fernandez for the first time.
- 2:00:04Roberts in his innings on the mound has walked three and struck out four.
- 2:00:09Newcomb has walked one, struck out three.
- 2:00:12Nine hits for the Phillies and seven for the Dodgers.
- 2:00:18One out, here's Ed Boussillon up.
- 2:00:22The wind up in the pitch to the rookie first baseman, up high for a ball one.
- 2:00:27Boussillon struck out in the first, again in the third, but in the fifth inning he tripled to right field.
- 2:00:33He went in the tying run and then came across with a lead run on a single by Willie Jones.
- 2:00:41Left hand batter, Ed Boussillon.
- 2:00:45Newcomb winds and fires, change up his high and it's ball two.
- 2:00:49Two balls, no strikes.
- 2:00:54Outfield swung around to the right against the left hand batter.
- 2:00:58And the infield way around, Jackson way wide at third, Zimmer lined up almost behind second.
- 2:01:05Gilliam with the edge of the grass on the right side.
- 2:01:08Pass ball high and it's ball free.
- 2:01:17We'll see one of the rookies on the Philadelphia squad and it might be it'll take the teams around the league a while to get a book on him.
- 2:01:25Or they might have a pretty good idea already.
- 2:01:29Sometimes they do.
- 2:01:31Pass ball is over first strike and it's three and one.
- 2:01:40Of course some of the clubs that'll look at Boussillon and Bowman last year at the tail end of the year in a few ball games.
- 2:01:50But sometimes it takes longer than that to get things figured out.
- 2:01:54Three and one pitch for Big Don.
- 2:01:56Fouled off on the ground, it is three-two.
- 2:02:08Newcomb against Roberts, they've met 12 times.
- 2:02:11Roberts won seven, lost three, was not involved in two decisions.
- 2:02:15Newcomb has won three, lost nine.
- 2:02:18Twelve games he started against Roberts.
- 2:02:20There's a long drive to right center field, Schneider huffing back, back, back, turns, he's got it.
- 2:02:26Right in front of the scoreboard in right center field.
- 2:02:29We'll see, watched that one well, but Schneider was able to get there and hold it down.
- 2:02:35So it's two-goin' now and here's Rip Rapolsky on the left fielder.
- 2:02:38A single flat out and rounded out. Rip Rapolsky right hand batter.
- 2:02:55Newcomb winds and fires.
- 2:02:57Bouncer hits down the third baseline foul, strike one.
- 2:03:11Newcomb now has retired the last seven men in a row since Jones singles.
- 2:03:15In the fifth inning, the sender crossed the go-ahead run for Philadelphia.
- 2:03:21Big Don delivers.
- 2:03:23Third ball for a strike, nothing and two on Rip Rapolsky.
- 2:03:34Lucky strike sending it all to you from County Mac Stadium in Philadelphia.
- 2:03:39Hope you get plenty of luckies on hand to enjoy the ball game a little better.
- 2:03:46The 0-2 pitch. Fastball strike three called on Rip Rapolsky out on strike.
- 2:03:53And for Newcomb now eight men in a row have been retired and that is strikeout number four.
- 2:03:59So the Fills go up and down in the seventh inning.
- 2:04:02No runs, no hits, no errors and them left on.
- 2:04:06So at the end, seven full of means of play at the score.
- 2:04:10The Phillies six, the Dodgers have five.
- 2:04:14For the fourth for station identification, this is the Brooklyn Dodgers, Radio Network.
- 2:04:20Dial 1460, WOKO Albany, the capital district's most talked about station
- 2:04:25with downtown studios and the Hotel Wellington.

- 2:05:41So get your orders in right away.
- 2:05:44All right Jerry, how about some more of that action?
- 2:05:46Ready to go, Perlow first batter and takes the curve ball down low, ball one.
- 2:05:51Kyle flied to left in the second, doubled in the fourth and drove in a run
- 2:05:55and had to sacrifice fly to center in the fifth inning.
- 2:05:58So he's one for two in the night's game.
- 2:06:01Roberts into the windup and here's the pitch.
- 2:06:04Call strike, curve ball at the letters and it's one and one.
- 2:06:11Off day tomorrow and Thursday as the Dodgers open up at Everett Field.
- 2:06:15We hope you'll be there.
- 2:06:17The Pittsburgh Pirates come in to see the guest team as the Dodgers open up the season.
- 2:06:24Fastball way outside and it's ball two.
- 2:06:27Then there'll be an off day on Friday, Good Friday, Saturday, Ladies Day at Everett Field against the Pirates
- 2:06:32and Sunday a big double header and next Monday the opener with the Phillies at Jersey City.
- 2:06:37A lot of baseball.
- 2:06:50Here's the pitch to Perlow, it's in for a strike and it's two-two.
- 2:06:54Sal Magley due to pitch the home opener at Everett Field on Thursday.
- 2:07:03Game time, one-thirty.
- 2:07:10As the roller hits the third, in fast comes Jones.
- 2:07:13Up will it go to first, him time to get the roller.
- 2:07:19Rolls out Jones to Boucher.
- 2:07:24Well he had to come very fast to make the play that time and get Perlow by a step and a half.
- 2:07:30One away and here's Hodges, right out, walked and struck out.
- 2:07:35Seven hits for Brooklyn and nine for Philadelphia.
- 2:07:39Six to five ball game, top of the eighth inning.
- 2:07:53Fastball on the corner for strike one.
- 2:08:00Both Roberts and Newcomb were on the ropes in the early innings in the third, fourth and fifth.
- 2:08:06But now a subtle down in the last two innings and have really been firing away.
- 2:08:10With the high foul feeling off and back into the stands,
- 2:08:14Well, Paddock comes back to give it a try but it's into the first row of boxed seats.
- 2:08:20So on Hodges the count is strike two.
- 2:08:26Well the Dodgers two hits by Gilliam, one for Somoli, Snyder, Perlow, Zimmer and Newcomb.
- 2:08:33Two to a piece for Jones and Bowman, one for Fernandez, Boucher, Rapolsky, Gavansky and Roberts.
- 2:08:45Strike two count, Hodges waits.
- 2:08:48Foul ball straight back to the wire and it's still nothing in two.
- 2:08:56Standing room crowd of 37,667 at County Mac Stadium in Philadelphia.
- 2:09:08One out, eighth inning.
- 2:09:12Hodges swings and there's a long one on that field, this one's going, going, this one is up in the upper deck
- 2:09:18and it's a tied up ball game as Gil Hodges felt one out of here tied up by 6-6.
- 2:09:33So we've got a brand new one going now, the eighth inning as Gil Hodges rips off his first home run of the 1957 season
- 2:09:40and sends a thousand lucky's along to the VA hospital at St. Matthew, New York.
- 2:09:46That's the third thousand lucky's to go tonight.
- 2:09:52Two home runs and a double play.
- 2:09:55Here's Jackson at bat now in a 6-6 ball game.
- 2:09:59Randy Dix the first pitch, strike one.
- 2:10:04Jackson nothing for three in tonight's game.
- 2:10:07One out, one on and Roberts into the windup.
- 2:10:11Foul ball on the ground off to the right of the plate, strike two on Randy Jackson.
- 2:10:15Hodges and Zimmer have been home runs and the one for Gil is a tighter up.
- 2:10:27One in the upper deck in left field.
- 2:10:33Here's the pitch, low for ball.
- 2:10:37Well among his other achievements Robin Roberts has the dubious distinction of being the National League soft at home run touch.
- 2:10:44Forty-six home runs last year, a major league record of home runs allowed or hit off of or any way you want to play it.
- 2:10:55Curve ball on the corner for strike three on Jackson.
- 2:10:59Randy turns and walks off, got a word to say don't fire dust to Boggess, but doesn't say too much.
- 2:11:06That's for Roberts' strike out number five and oncoming now will be Roy Campanella.
- 2:11:14Roy has struck out twice and flat out to right field.
- 2:11:28First pitch, curve outside ball one.
- 2:11:31Six-six ball game here in the eighth inning. Two down, none on, Campanella waiting with Zimmer on deck and Newcomb to follow.
- 2:11:50The Dodgers tagged Roberts for 12 home runs in 55 in the third inning last year.
- 2:11:55Here's the swing and a miss, strike two.
- 2:12:03Pamela Byron who has been in the bullpen comes on down to the Dodgers dugout now.
- 2:12:09Maybe he's going to go to work here in the last of the eighth inning.
- 2:12:12Campy takes outside for ball and the count evens it two and two.
- 2:12:20Two balls, two strikes.
- 2:12:31Campy swings and it's a line drive right to second baseman Ted Kvansky for the out to retire to five.
- 2:12:38So the Dodgers pick up a tying run in the eighth inning on a homer by Gil Hodges.
- 2:12:42One run, one hit, no errors and none left on.
- 2:12:46So at the end of the top of the eighth inning we've got a brand new one going, the score, the Dodgers six and the Phillies have six.
- 2:12:55Well, we got it going here and what to say?
- 2:12:59Well, we've got it going here too.
- 2:13:03Really something.
- 2:13:04I wonder how the folks are going.
- 2:13:07I can see them right now though.
- 2:13:09Sitting back in an easy chair, dial all set for baseball.
- 2:13:12And a pack of Lucky's where you can reach them really easy.
- 2:13:16Man, you've got it made for a perfect evening filled with lots of real deep down smoking enjoyment.
- 2:13:21That's the smoking enjoyment, one thing you can always be sure of with a Lucky.
- 2:13:26It stands for reason too because a Lucky's all cigarettes, all fine tobacco.
- 2:13:33Naturally mild, good tasting tobacco that's toasted to taste even better.
- 2:13:37Cleaner, fresher, smoother.
- 2:13:41Say friends, why not light up a Lucky right now when the clock here says about eight minutes past ten o'clock.
- 2:13:54So that's light up time here in Philadelphia.
- 2:13:57You know when you light that Lucky up you'll find it's the best tasting cigarette you ever smoke.
- 2:14:07Well, we've had seven and a half innings of a ball game all tied up now.
- 2:14:11The Dodgers six runs eight hits one error and the Philadelphia Phillies six runs nine hits no error.
- 2:14:16We're changing pitchers on the mound for the Brooklyn Dodgers.
- 2:14:20So to give us all the information, let's get right back to chair.
- 2:14:24Claren LeBine coming on, 10 and six last year against the Phillies, a lifetime mark of seven and six.
- 2:14:30Well, Don Newcomb gives way after going seven and easy allowed six runs five earned nine hits struck out four on walk one.
- 2:14:38First batter for the Phillies will be Willie Jones who has two for three in tonight's game.
- 2:14:43Claren LeBine, number one fireman for the Brooklyn Dodgers in now here in the eighth inning.
- 2:14:53Claren Wines and Fires, Jones a fastball is in for strike one.
- 2:14:59Newcomb allowed nine hits but the Phillies were only able to punch them in three.
- 2:15:05Three in the second, three in the fifth, three in the fourth.
- 2:15:11Here's a curveball for strike two.
- 2:15:15Nothing and two on Willie Jones.
- 2:15:17Sam will pat on deck and then Bob Pullman to follow.
- 2:15:22All game tied at six and six here in the eighth inning.
- 2:15:29Clem checks the time with Roy Campanella.
- 2:15:34Down it comes, curveball low outside for ball on the count one and two.
- 2:15:42Jones doubled in the second to drive in a run, single in the fifth inning to drive in a run.
- 2:15:46He's been a real spark for the Phillies tonight.
- 2:15:59Clem checks the time with the one-two offering.
- 2:16:03Here's a fastball chop down foul of the plate on Firedusty Boggess, picks it up and rubs it up, throws it back out.
- 2:16:19One and two on Jones.
- 2:16:23Big number six on the back of Willie's white uniform.
- 2:16:29A bouncer hit right back to LeBarn on one hop, played a Hodges and it's one away.
- 2:16:36One up, one down and here's Sam Lofata.
- 2:16:40He's known for two tonight.
- 2:16:42On on the field is Joyce, walks in, scored and pops out.
- 2:16:46Sam Lofata, the big backstop for Philadelphia.
- 2:16:53They play them around to the left, last half of the eighth in a six-foot ball game.
- 2:17:03LeBarn ready, delivers curveball outside, ball in.
- 2:17:23Clem deals again, overarm curve is in for a strike and it's one and one.
- 2:17:29LeBarn likes to mix up the curveballs, overarm and three-quarter and once in a while sidearm, but not too much sidearm.
- 2:17:37And one of his most effective pitches of course is a sinker ball.
- 2:17:47One-one, a windup in pitch, fastball bounced along to the left side, Zimmer comes in, gets a big hop,
- 2:17:53score the first in time and it is two up and two down.
- 2:17:59Oh, Zim really gets rid of that ball in a hurry.
- 2:18:03Every time he fires that ball over there you think that runner's going to be there.
- 2:18:08But he's usually out by about six or eight steps.
- 2:18:12But Zim wastes no time.
- 2:18:15And on the other hand you've seen fellows who will grab the ball and have a real fine arm and they'll kind of look at it.
- 2:18:20And then finally they'll beat the runner by about a step or step and a half every time.
- 2:18:25Bill Serena the Cubs is one guy who would do that.
- 2:18:29He'd kind of read the trademark and then let her rip.
- 2:18:34First pitch is outside, ball one.
- 2:18:38Billy Cox, same way.
- 2:18:44One-oh pitch, curveball in for a strike and it's one and one to Bob Bowman.
- 2:18:51Two down in the eighth inning.
- 2:18:54Newcomb had retired eight in a row from the fifth inning on and now LeBine has tacked on two more.
- 2:19:00So the Pills have been ten up and ten down here against LeBine and Newcomb.
- 2:19:07One-one pitch, down ball to the left side, Zimmer scoots over to his right up with it.
- 2:19:12The long throw is in time but again the Pills go up and down in order.
- 2:19:17Nothing to cross in the eighth inning, three up, three down.
- 2:19:19No runs, no hits, no errors and them left on.
- 2:19:23So at the end of eight we've got a new ball game all tied up at six and six.
- 2:19:27The Dodgers and the Phillies.
- 2:19:30Well Al, what'd you say there?
- 2:19:32Well Al, let's give the folks a total for the end of eight innings in this tied up ball game, Jerry.
- 2:19:36For Philadelphia six runs, nine hits, no errors and for Brooklyn six runs, eight hits and one error.
- 2:19:42The Phillies scored one in the second, three in the fourth and two in the fifth for their six.
- 2:19:48While the Dodgers have scored one in the third, one in the fourth, three in the fifth and one in the eighth to tie it up.
- 2:19:54Otherwise, the scores today in the National League.
- 2:19:56Pittsburgh defeated the Giants nine to two, Friend beating Antonelli.
- 2:20:00Milwaukee defeated Chicago four to one, Warren Spahn beating Bob Rush, Logan a home run.
- 2:20:05St. Louis defeated Cincinnati, Weimar beating Klipschra and Smith and Moon hitting home runs for the Cardinals.
- 2:20:11And in the American League, the Yankees defeated Washington two to one, Ford beating Stubbs with Severs and Thera hitting home runs.
- 2:20:18Boston and Baltimore, a victory for Boston four to two over Baltimore with Brewer beating White.
- 2:20:24Chicago and Cleveland in 11 innings.
- 2:20:27Pearson's score went all the way. Chicago won that over Cleveland three to two.
- 2:20:31And Kansas City defeated Detroit two to one, Morgan and Larry going all the way.
- 2:20:35Morgan beating Larry and Zirniel hitting a home run in that ball game for the Kansas City ball club in the sixth.
- 2:20:42The winnets. Well, that's about it as far as all the scores and so forth are concerned.
- 2:20:47We'll see if there's going to be any more scoring in this one as we go to the top of the ninth inning.
- 2:20:51Don Zimmer coming up to the plate. Let's get back to Jerry.
- 2:20:54Little Zip has a home run, a walk and a strike out.
- 2:20:57So he's one for two. He's scored twice. Roberts delivers.
- 2:21:01Zimmer swings a drive to left field. It's in for a base hit.
- 2:21:05Lepofsky over to play it. Fires back in and Zimmer is on with hit number nine for the Dodgers.
- 2:21:13That's two for Zimmer tonight.
- 2:21:23In the bullpen now for Philadelphia, Bob Miller, a right-hander.
- 2:21:28LeVine coming on with one on in the ninth inning as Zimmer leads it off with a swing to left field.
- 2:21:37So now Gilliam and Zimmer each have a fair base hit. The Dodgers have nine.
- 2:21:43And the totals are almost identical except for one error on the Dodgers side of the ledger and none for Philadelphia.
- 2:21:54Here's LeVine up and of course that brings Jones up on the grass of third looking for LeVine.
- 2:21:59And Boushie playing the bag against Zimmer ready to break down the first base line.
- 2:22:05Here's the pitch-budded foul off on the first base side, strike one.
- 2:22:10LeVine trying to make Boushie play the ball because Jones was right in on top of him.
- 2:22:17Zimmer moves on back to first. On the butt nearly everybody moves.
- 2:22:23The right fielder is over on the line backing up first base.
- 2:22:28Second base moving toward first. First base went down the line, et cetera.
- 2:22:32Here they go. The pitch-budded on the first base line and again foul.
- 2:22:36Boushie after makes a play on it, grabs it before the ball has a chance to get back in.
- 2:22:42So it is strike two on LeVine.
- 2:22:49About the only players not running when the bunt goes on like that are the pitch and the catcher and the hitter.
- 2:22:58Everybody else in motion.
- 2:23:05It's a two-and-a-three. We'll see what Clem's going to do now.
- 2:23:07The pitch, he's around the bunt, takes the call, strike three.
- 2:23:11LeVine out on strike.
- 2:23:14And for Robin Roberts, strikeout number six.
- 2:23:21Up now will be Jim Gilliam who has singled twice, flat out twice.
- 2:23:26He's going to run and score the run.
- 2:23:37Six-six ball game, ninth inning.
- 2:23:40Gilliam waits. Here's the pitch to him. Fast ball is in for a strike.
- 2:23:58Gilliam waiting, nothing in one count. Zimmer off first.
- 2:24:01Jim backs up from a low fast ball and it's one and one. One ball, one strike.
- 2:24:10Dodgers up from the top of the ninth, top of the batting order.
- 2:24:13Gilliam and then Simoli and then Snyder.
- 2:24:16One out, one on.
- 2:24:20Roberts ready again, looks and delivers.
- 2:24:23A swing and a drive hits through the hole, the right field for a base hit.
- 2:24:26Zimmer turns second, six for third. Here's the throw across, it'll be cut up.
- 2:24:31It came on through and Zimmer is out of third.
- 2:24:36It looks like Fernandez is going to cut it off.
- 2:24:38And at the last minute he let it go through and it was in time.
- 2:24:41We got Zimmer fighting the third.
- 2:24:44Here's the throw by right fielder Bob Holman all the way through.
- 2:24:58At the last instant, Willie Jones hollered to Fernandez to let it go and he did.
- 2:25:03Fernandez was in the middle of the infield to cut that throw.
- 2:25:07And Jones told him to let it come through and it came one hop through into third base with Jones and he put the tag on Zimmer.
- 2:25:17Out trying to go from first to third on a perfect segue by Bob Holman, the right fielder.
- 2:25:21Great play.
- 2:25:24Here's Simoli up now with Gilliam on first and two outs in the ninth inning.
- 2:25:30Jim was digging, came in first and it took a perfect segue to beat him and that's exactly what Holman offered up.
- 2:25:36Here's the pitch.
- 2:25:38Swung on and bowtip back, strike one.
- 2:25:44Boy that was a fine throw by Bolman.
- 2:25:57Strike one count to Simoli.
- 2:26:01Two outs.
- 2:26:02Gilliam dancing around off first.
- 2:26:04The pitch to Simoli is swung and a liner hit over short and the left fielder for a base hit.
- 2:26:09Gilliam turns and holds up that second base as the throw from Ashburn comes in to third.
- 2:26:16So the Dodgers have had three singles this inning but now have runners on at first and second with Duke Sadler coming up.
- 2:26:24For Simoli his second into the game, Gilliam now has three and the Dodgers have a total of 11.
- 2:26:33The fielder at bat has had one hit three tries.
- 2:26:36He doubled in the fourth inning and the later team in to score.
- 2:26:41So Gilliam is on second.
- 2:26:43Simoli on first.
- 2:26:47Then we're out trying to go to third on a beautiful peg by Bob Bolman that possibly kept the Dodgers out of the scoring column at least up to this moment.
- 2:26:59In the second inning, Roberts delivers, Duke takes it high outside, ball one.
- 2:27:04Top of the ninth.
- 2:27:07Two outs, two on.
- 2:27:11Scores all knotted up at sixth and sixth.
- 2:27:17Roberts again with a stretch and now Snyder steps out.
- 2:27:22Second baseman Kazanski is playing about two steps on the grass and right field now backs up another step.
- 2:27:29Lushy is right on the line and way back at first base.
- 2:27:32Outfield shifted well around against Duke.
- 2:27:35There's a high pop foul from his back and this will be out of play up on top.
- 2:27:40And on Snyder to count one and one.
- 2:27:50Outfield shifted way around against Duke.
- 2:27:55The outfield shift is not too great.
- 2:27:58In fact Ashburn is almost straight away in center.
- 2:28:01But right fielder Bolman is pulled over a bit toward the line.
- 2:28:06Here's the one-one look and the pitch to Duke.
- 2:28:08Swung on and foul steps out of Lefato's glove, strike two.
- 2:28:11One and two on Snyder.
- 2:28:13And Duke had a real big cut.
- 2:28:16Robin Roberts ready again.
- 2:28:18Snyder waiting.
- 2:28:19Runners poised.
- 2:28:20The pitch pulled in a miss.
- 2:28:22Strike two.
- 2:28:26Snyder goes down and comes right down to seven for Robin Roberts.
- 2:28:31Throw in the ninth for Brooklyn.
- 2:28:32No runs.
- 2:28:33Three hits.
- 2:28:35No errors.
- 2:28:36There were two left on.
- 2:28:38The Dodgers had a real tense that inning but Robin Roberts was equal to the occasion and got out of the jam.
- 2:28:45So that's all for the Dodgers in the top of the ninth and at the end of the eighth and a half inning to play the score.
- 2:28:50The Dodgers six.
- 2:28:52The Phillies have six.
- 2:28:54Right down to the clutch, Jerry.
- 2:28:55How about the last half of that night?
- 2:28:57It'll be Ted Kavinsky, Robin Roberts, or a hitter.
- 2:29:00And then Richie Ashburn.
- 2:29:03Last of the ninth.
- 2:29:04LeBine on the firing line.
- 2:29:06Wines and delivers.
- 2:29:07Kavinsky takes the strike.
- 2:29:08Nothing in the one.
- 2:29:11Well, the Dodgers had a lot of ilts in that top of the ninth inning after Zimmer let off.
- 2:29:15Had LeBine been able to move him across, they'd have gotten a run.
- 2:29:19And had Bowman throw that fence throw two to the mark, getting Zimmer third.
- 2:29:23Here's a roller back to the mound.
- 2:29:25LeBine comes off, makes his play, in time for the first stop.
- 2:29:28One away.
- 2:29:31Had the throw been not quite so good to get Zimmer.
- 2:29:36They'd have had a run.
- 2:29:38But as it is, Philadelphia came through there and held him back.
- 2:29:43And now Robin Roberts comes on to get the tremendous round of applause from the fans here.
- 2:30:04Robin Roberts in waiting, left-hand swinger.
- 2:30:09LeBine delivers.
- 2:30:11Curveball for strike one.
- 2:30:17Twelve fillies have now been retired in order by Brooklyn pitching.
- 2:30:23Newcomb got eight.
- 2:30:24LeBine now has four.
- 2:30:27Roberts ran up to Bud and takes the strike.
- 2:30:29Nothing and two.
- 2:30:420-2 count on Robin Roberts, last half of the ninth inning.
- 2:30:47LeBine winds and fires.
- 2:30:49Roberts takes low overball on the count one and two.
- 2:30:53Well, the Dodgers, of course, now pulling for an overtime ball game.
- 2:31:00Hoping to get another shot at him in the tenth.
- 2:31:07Here's the pitch.
- 2:31:09Small on the ground ball, the shortstop.
- 2:31:10Zimmer comes in, scoops up, fires to Hodges.
- 2:31:12In time for the out.
- 2:31:13Two away.
- 2:31:15Roberts out on the ground ball, short to first.
- 2:31:18LeBine brings up Richie Ashburn, who has none for four in today's game.
- 2:31:24You'll recall the fillies in the fourth inning scored three runs after the first two batters had been retired.
- 2:31:29One lapota walk, Goldman singles, Devanski singles, and Roberts doubles.
- 2:31:35So hold on to your hats.
- 2:31:37Last half of the ninth, two outs, score tied, six-six.
- 2:31:42And LeBine ready to work to the left-hand batter, Richie Ashburn.
- 2:31:49Wind up and pitch.
- 2:31:51Passball comes down low and it's ball one.
- 2:31:55Well, the fans on hand tonight here at County Mac City have really had their monies worth.
- 2:31:59A real thriller all the way.
- 2:32:02Got a little bit of everything in this one.
- 2:32:08LeBine ready pitching to Ashburn.
- 2:32:10Low inside for ball.
- 2:32:12The count goes to nothing.
- 2:32:15Ashburn chokes up on that bat.
- 2:32:18That two or three inches off the end.
- 2:32:22Real fine hitter.
- 2:32:27It's 3-0-3 last year.
- 2:32:32LeBine with a 2-0 pitch.
- 2:32:34In for a strike and it's 2-1.
- 2:32:39He has a lifetime average of 3-13.
- 2:32:42Gives you an idea of what he can do with that bat.
- 2:32:44He's almost a magician.
- 2:32:50Two and one the count.
- 2:32:52Two outs, none on.
- 2:32:53Ninth inning, LeBine into the windup, delivers.
- 2:32:55Little high after ball and the count goes three and one now.
- 2:32:59Chico Fernandez on deck.
- 2:33:08A capacity crowd.
- 2:33:09In fact, standing room crowd tonight at Philadelphia.
- 2:33:14And a really highly enthusiastic crowd.
- 2:33:17Really whooping it up.
- 2:33:19Here's a liner hit, one hop to Zimmer.
- 2:33:21Great stop.
- 2:33:22Turn through.
- 2:33:23Not in time.
- 2:33:25Ashburn is on.
- 2:33:26The ball bounced away from Rogers.
- 2:33:28And it'll be a base hit.
- 2:33:30Fine play by Zimmer.
- 2:33:31Breaking quick with his left.
- 2:33:32Came up with the ball on a great stop.
- 2:33:35He's been fielding through but was not in time to get the flying Ashburn.
- 2:33:39The ball skidded away from Rogers down the line a little piece.
- 2:33:43But Ashburn had a deep for a base hit.
- 2:33:46That breaks the string.
- 2:33:48Gives Ashburn a single and is up number 10 for Philadelphia.
- 2:33:51And it brings on Chico Fernandez who has one to four.
- 2:33:56Got an infield hit in the fifth inning.
- 2:34:00Ashburn had that play beat.
- 2:34:02And the ball was hit sharply to shortstop.
- 2:34:05Zimmer had a great play on the ball but by the time Don could turn and throw,
- 2:34:09the throw was not in time and even though it was low it bounced away from Rogers.
- 2:34:14It's a throw to the base hit.
- 2:34:17Fernandez waiting now as LeBion worked out of a stretch for the first time this evening.
- 2:34:22Here's the pitch.
- 2:34:24LeBion off to the right and it's strike one.
- 2:34:34Two outs, one on, ninth inning.
- 2:34:36The filly's batting.
- 2:34:51Taking plenty of time now, wants to be careful with Chico.
- 2:34:57Chexton delivers a looper hit back in the middle in the center field for a base hit.
- 2:35:03Ashburn goes into second and holds on and the filly has got something going now with two outs and a ninth.
- 2:35:11For Fernandez, his second hit as he just reached out and swapped one in the center field.
- 2:35:17Ashburn into second and up will be Ed Boushee who has struck out twice, tripled and flat out.
- 2:35:26He drove in a run in the fifth and scored a run.
- 2:35:30The run that put the fillies ahead at the time.
- 2:35:33Dodgers tied that one with a home run by Hodges in the eighth inning.
- 2:35:38Left hand batter, rookie first baseman Ed Boushee at bat.
- 2:35:41LeBion looks, checks the runners and delivers.
- 2:35:45Curve ball is inside, ball one.
- 2:35:48In on the hands, Boushee.
- 2:35:55Left hand hitter waiting.
- 2:35:57Ashburn is second and he can fly.
- 2:36:00Fernandez is on first.
- 2:36:03Looks like he can ignore him.
- 2:36:06The big run is at second, Richie Ashburn.
- 2:36:10LeBion will distract the left.
- 2:36:12Now a pickoff try, throwback is not in time.
- 2:36:16Ashburn fighting in ahead of the tag by Don Zimmer.
- 2:36:24Six-six ball game right down to the wire here in the last of the ninth inning.
- 2:36:28LeBion with the stretch to pitch.
- 2:36:31Little low outside for ball two and it's two-numping now on Ed Boushee.
- 2:36:37He's the filly, a rookie first baseman, batting in the number three spot.
- 2:36:42To Vance Ginn-Roberts, the first two batters retired easily.
- 2:36:45Then Ashburn got an infield hit to shortstop and Fernandez looped a single to center.
- 2:36:52The Pills have two outs, two on and a two-all count on Boushee as LeBion comes to the stretch.
- 2:37:00Curve ball is inside, ball three.
- 2:37:03Three and nothing now.
- 2:37:07LeBion trying to work on him.
- 2:37:16Clem 110 lost six last year and a seven and six lifetime I guess to the Phillies.
- 2:37:25Now the look, check of the runner and the pitch.
- 2:37:28In first strike with a fastball.
- 2:37:31And it's three and one and LeBion didn't fire that one right down the middle.
- 2:37:36He came in around the knees on the inside corner.
- 2:37:39Didn't want to give him anything fat.
- 2:37:43Three balls, one strike.
- 2:37:46Left hand batter waiting.
- 2:37:48Ashburn off second.
- 2:37:50Here's the pitch.
- 2:37:52Full on a chopped foul off behind the plate and the count is full and we can turn him loose now.
- 2:37:58Two and two out last of the night.
- 2:38:01Here we go.
- 2:38:10Okay, a tight spot all the way around.
- 2:38:14Pressure's on everybody.
- 2:38:15The runner's ready to move.
- 2:38:16LeBion ready to fire and Boushee's standing at the plate.
- 2:38:20And the crowd waiting expectantly.
- 2:38:22Here's the three-two pitch now on the way.
- 2:38:26Ball for him.
- 2:38:28Walks him to load him up.
- 2:38:32Off LeBion, walk number one.
- 2:38:35And the third goes Ashburn.
- 2:38:37The second goes Fernandez.
- 2:38:39Up will be Raphosky who has one for four.
- 2:38:44And now conference at the mound.
- 2:38:46Jackson, Hodges and LeBion gather around to talk it over.
- 2:38:51Bottom of the ninth and that's the two outs.
- 2:38:54LeBion getting into trouble.
- 2:38:57Two singles in a walk to fill them up and Raphosky, the cleanup batter, comes on.
- 2:39:04And now we'll see.
- 2:39:08Short side, six-six, last half of the ninth and the big run is the third and LeBion trying to get the big out here in the bottom of the inning.
- 2:39:17LeBion hits Raphosky up high for ball one.
- 2:39:24Time call to Campanella wants to go out and talk to Clem.
- 2:39:32Delroy takes his time, walks slowly out, rubs up the ball.
- 2:39:36Says a few words, talking to Clem.
- 2:39:49Delroy's blowing them down a bit to give them a little time.
- 2:39:53Gives him a pat on the arm and comes on back.
- 2:40:01All right, here we go. Ball one count on Raphosky. Bases loaded.
- 2:40:06Fillies on every sack.
- 2:40:09Bottom of the ninth, six-six ball game.
- 2:40:17LeBion ready into the windup.
- 2:40:19Down it comes.
- 2:40:21A high popup on the infield, a short stop.
- 2:40:23Zimmer comes in, waits a step, pounds the ball, he's got it and will have overtime tonight.
- 2:40:29Raphosky pops up to the short stop.
- 2:40:32And so in the ninth inning, no runs, two hits, no errors, and three left on for the Phillies in the ninth inning.
- 2:40:43So that's the end of nine and the score is all tied up at six and six.
- 2:40:49Well, fans, the last half of this game has been brought to you by the American Tobacco Company,
- 2:40:54America's leading manufacturer of cigarettes on behalf of Lucky Strike, the best tasting cigarette you ever smoke.
- 2:41:03And now to take over is the F&M Schaefer Brewing Company of Brooklyn,
- 2:41:08brewers of Schaefer Beer, America's oldest lager beer. It's real beer.
- 2:41:15Well, before we go to the tenth inning, let's pause for station identification.
- 2:41:20This is the Brooklyn Dodger Radio Network.
- 2:41:23Dial 1460, WOKO Albany, the capital district's most talked about station, with downtown studios in the Hotel Wellington.
- 2:41:31It's now 1037 WOKO time.
- 2:41:42Tenth inning, it'll be Ferillo, Hodges, and Jackson to face Robin Roberts, and in now it's called the play-by-play for Schaefer Beer.
- 2:41:49Here's Al Helper. Al?
- 2:41:52All right, Jerry, here are your totals for the end of nine innings, six runs, 11 hits, and one error for the Brooklyn Dodgers,
- 2:41:59six runs, 11 hits, and no errors for the Philadelphia Phillies.
- 2:42:04Carl Ferillo batting in the cleanup spot will be the first man up for the Dodgers in the top half of any number 10.
- 2:42:11Carl, by the way, was cleanup man more times last year than anybody else on the ball club, so it's not surprising to see him in there now.
- 2:42:18Robin Roberts makes the first pitch, and Ferillo whacks that ball to center field with the ash bearing going over off to his right,
- 2:42:24calls it down for out number one.
- 2:42:28One away in the top half, any number 10.
- 2:42:32By the way, the Dodgers have stranded six base runners tonight, and the Philadelphia Phillies have stranded a total of seven.
- 2:42:40Gil Hodges got this ball game back on an even footing with his home run in the eighth inning,
- 2:42:46one of the two home runs hit here tonight, one hit by Don Zimmer and one hit by Gil Hodges, both solo affairs.
- 2:42:53Gil is moving in now. He's walked one time, and he's one for three. Takes a curve ball, it's over for a strike.
- 2:43:09Shot on fastball, gets right back to the mound. Robin Roberts knocks it down. It knocks him down, too.
- 2:43:15He makes his play and is still down on his hands and knees on the diamond.
- 2:43:18That ball could have hit him in the pit of his stomach.
- 2:43:21There was one hopper back to the mound. Hit Roberts, he stayed with it, knocked him down, he made his play.
- 2:43:27He's up walking around now.
- 2:43:33He's rubbing his wishbone. That hit him right in the chest.
- 2:43:37He's going to be all right. It's a hard smash right back to the mound.
- 2:43:43So two down in the top half of the tenth inning. Bob Miller gets up and starts to throw her lay down in the Philadelphia bullpen.
- 2:43:53All lanky right-handers.
- 2:43:58Coming up to the plate now will be Randy Jackson with two down and the bases empty in a 6-6 ball game.
- 2:44:04There was another extra inning ball game today. That was over in the American League.
- 2:44:10They took 11 innings before the White Sox were able to beat Cleveland and score 3-2.
- 2:44:16Pitch is hung on, but Jackson knocks back to the mound.
- 2:44:19Roberts, puts himself out on the grass, picks it up, fires the first and that's it.
- 2:44:26Oh, Roberts has had a rough time of it.
- 2:44:29Nothing of cost for the Dodgers here in the top half of the tenth inning.
- 2:44:33Roberts justly deserves a round of applause he's getting right now.
- 2:44:38At the end of 9 1 half innings of play remains a Dodgers 6 to throw it off your filly's half-stick.
- 2:44:43I think you've got a score there too, haven't you, Jarron?
- 2:44:46Why, you said it, Al. You know, I say a man's home is his castle.
- 2:44:50Well, you take my word for it.
- 2:44:52Nothing makes a guy feel more like a king in his castle than having a refrigerator that's well stocked with Schaeffer beer.
- 2:44:59Man, it gives you a royal feeling to be able to step out to the kitchen any time and pour yourself a tall, cool glass of Schaeffer.
- 2:45:07You just watch that golden amber Schaeffer rise up in the glass with a snowy white stone and a foam at the top.
- 2:45:14And you're looking at the promise of enjoyment, real enjoyment.
- 2:45:19And Schaeffer just never lets you down.
- 2:45:21No, sir, it gives you the light, fleshy, satisfying flavor you want in beer.
- 2:45:27The tang and sparkle of a crisp winter day on even the warmest afternoon.
- 2:45:33What's Schaeffer's secret?
- 2:45:35The finest brewing ingredients in the world.
- 2:45:38What's Schaeffer's old-time brewing skill?
- 2:45:41So for real, deep-down enjoyment, stock up your refrigerator with Schaeffer beer right away tonight or the first thing tomorrow.
- 2:45:50It's real beer.
- 2:45:52Bottom of the pants, and here's Willie Jones and back again to Al.
- 2:45:56Willie Jones has been one of the heroes for Philadelphia tonight.
- 2:45:59He's batted in a couple of runs for them.
- 2:46:02LeBiont ties that fast curve on him and moves it over waist-high for strike one.
- 2:46:12Jones tonight has doubled and he's singled in four times up and has driven in two runs.
- 2:46:17LeBiont throws the fastball and Jones after it, hodders one into very short right field coming on to Carl Perillo and makes the catch.
- 2:46:26Well, Jones goes down, has the first batter up in the last half, inning number nine.
- 2:46:32That'll bring on Stan Lopata.
- 2:46:35Stan has forced the man. He's walked. He's popped the short and he's rolled the short.
- 2:46:40So they've pulled out the catcher tonight, his 0-3.
- 2:46:43One out, the bases empty, last half of the 10th inning.
- 2:46:47Wouldn't you know that the Dodgers would get one started like this?
- 2:46:52Six and six were in the last half of inning number 10 at Conny Mack Stadium in Philadelphia.
- 2:46:57Schaefer Beer happy to be sending the extra innings down.
- 2:47:01Sidearm fastball to crouching Lopata is taken outside for ball one.
- 2:47:09This is LeBiont's ball game to win or lose, just as it is Robin Roberts.
- 2:47:16He's given up two base hits, delivers, his pitch is outside to Lopata for ball two.
- 2:47:22Then got himself in a whale of trouble in the ninth inning.
- 2:47:26One or two men on, he walked Boche to load the bases, but he bore down then to get Big Rip Propulski to pump up the short, thereby got out of the inning.
- 2:47:36Old rubber arms out there now working the tenth. He's got one man down. There's nobody on behind him. He's got to count with Lopata ball two.
- 2:47:43He delivers an overhand curve and Lopata leans back and takes one, flips in for a strike.
- 2:47:49Counting Lopata, two and one.
- 2:47:52If you haven't seen Lopata at bat, it sort of reminds you of a guy about to sit down in a kiddie's rocking chair somewhere.
- 2:47:58That's the way he gets down fast.
- 2:48:01What's that Jerry? The way you swingers off the air.
- 2:48:05Now the two-one delivery on Stan Lopata.
- 2:48:09LeBron comes in with it. Lopata backs off and takes another fast one in there, right over the fifth, what's called strike two.
- 2:48:17Two balls and two strikes.
- 2:48:24We'll duck in the other scores off today's openers.
- 2:48:27That's as soon as we get an opportunity right off the chief of scoreboard.
- 2:48:31Many of you may not have heard all of the final scores.
- 2:48:36Overhand curve, Lopata takes low and outside.
- 2:48:39Full count now on Stan, three balls, two strikes.
- 2:48:43One out in the bottom of the tenth inning.
- 2:48:45There are no base runners and the score here is locked up at six and six at Tonyamax Stadium in Summit, Alabama.
- 2:48:54Opening day activities for the Dodgers and the Phillies.
- 2:48:59Everything else is over.
- 2:49:05Stan LeBron gets ready to bend that three-two pitch in there.
- 2:49:08That's what he does and it's outside and half a ball for.
- 2:49:12Lopata drops off the first base.
- 2:49:14That'll be the second base on balls given up by Stan.
- 2:49:18Coming up to the plate now, wearing the number ten on the back of his shirt, Bob Bowman, the right fielder.
- 2:49:23He's driven in one run.
- 2:49:32Two base hits for beautiful right fielder and four times up tonight.
- 2:49:37Stan Lopata, not too fleet of foot, is on the first base.
- 2:49:41LeBron, back over his left shoulder with a branching check of that base runner.
- 2:49:46Looks down to this right-hand hitter now and is ready to go to work.
- 2:49:48He delivers, the pass ball is low and outside.
- 2:49:53One ball and no strikes.
- 2:49:56Six-six here, otherwise in the National League.
- 2:49:59Pittsburgh defeated the Giants 9-2.
- 2:50:02Milwaukee defeated Chicago 4-1.
- 2:50:04And St. Louis took Cincinnati 13-4.
- 2:50:08We'll get the American League for you in a moment.
- 2:50:12Now they won and owe delivery.
- 2:50:14The Bowman, in it comes, pass ball, Bowman swings on it and pipes it up.
- 2:50:18Roy Campanella lost it for the moment.
- 2:50:20Now he has it and fouls ground off to the left of the plate and hauls it in.
- 2:50:25Should have seen Dusty Buggers heading out of the way of that one.
- 2:50:32Dusty couldn't have moved that fast last year.
- 2:50:34He weighed about 40 pounds more than he does this year.
- 2:50:38Boy, he's trimmed down to a mere nothing for Dusty.
- 2:50:40I took his fish in this one around and slimmed him up a little.
- 2:50:43Yeah, I know, you scared it out of him, Jerry.
- 2:50:45He rocked the boat, I hear.
- 2:50:47Out of the plate now is Ted Kizanski.
- 2:50:50Lopata still at first, two down.
- 2:50:52Kizanski one hit in four times.
- 2:50:55Got a single to left field in the fourth inning.
- 2:50:58LeBion delivers to him and Kizanski backs off and takes the sweeping curve ball over the outside corner for strike one.
- 2:51:10Know something that goes good on those fish and drips, Jerry?
- 2:51:13A table beer, you bet your life.
- 2:51:16Now the 0-1 delivery on Ted Kizanski.
- 2:51:19Lopata at first base, the pitch in there for a cold strike two.
- 2:51:25LeBion reared back.
- 2:51:43LeBion sets, looks at Lopata, delivers, Kizanski starts to go and changes his mind and the lead of fastball is outside.
- 2:51:52One ball and two strikes.
- 2:51:55Last half of inning number ten.
- 2:52:01Overtime night affair at Philadelphia.
- 2:52:05People will long remember this one regardless of which way the cat happens to jump.
- 2:52:11LeBion had six runs and 11 hits.
- 2:52:14LeBion delivers, Kizanski takes the curve is just outside.
- 2:52:18Campanella thought it was in there.
- 2:52:21Turns and says something over his shoulder to Dusty Bargit.
- 2:52:28Got a 2-2 count on Ted Kizanski, the number eight hitter in the Philadelphia quarter.
- 2:52:35Robin Roberts will be the next man up if needed.
- 2:52:402-2 pitch on this right-hand hitter.
- 2:52:42Feet wide spread apart as Kizanski.
- 2:52:44Lopata takes the lead at first base.
- 2:52:46Down.
- 2:52:49Iron wins his way out of this one.
- 2:52:52Strikeout did.
- 2:52:54Oh, for Clem, that's his first strikeout.
- 2:52:57And in the tenth inning for Philadelphia, no runs, there were no base hits.
- 2:53:00They leave a man, they strand the race.
- 2:53:02Score at the end of ten.
- 2:53:04The Dodgers six, left Philadelphia Philly's half six.
- 2:53:09They're ready to go here in the eleventh inning, Roy Campanella standing in.
- 2:53:12Roberts comes into him with a curveball, it's low and outside for ball one.
- 2:53:16Down in the Brooklyn bullpen, he's got a left and right-hander warming up.
- 2:53:20Johnny Pudras, the left-hander, and the right-hander is Don Besson.
- 2:53:25Sidearm curveball and Campanella drills it to center field.
- 2:53:28Ashburn is off to his left, still going back, reaches up and hauls it down.
- 2:53:33Campanella, a long fly ball to center field for the first out in the eleventh inning.
- 2:53:48Coming up to the plate now will be little Don Zimmer.
- 2:53:52Don is homered, he's walked, he's struck out, and he's singled.
- 2:53:55He's driven in one run.
- 2:53:57Two hits for three at best tonight.
- 2:53:59Roberts comes into him with a curveball and Zim after it, hits a foul right back to the screen for strike one.
- 2:54:10Six runs, 11 hits for the Dodgers, six runs, 11 hits for Philadelphia.
- 2:54:14One error committed, the Dodgers have that chalked up on their record.
- 2:54:20Zim is swung on a miss for the second strike.
- 2:54:27The Dodgers have stranded six men tonight.
- 2:54:29Philadelphia Phillies have left on a total of eight.
- 2:54:34Roberts out there still going, guns the ball in again to Zimmer, sidearm fastball, and that's low and outside.
- 2:54:42One ball, two strikes.
- 2:54:46Hope you've got plenty of shaper on hand, this ballgame could go on for quite a spell.
- 2:54:55Zim pitch, outside, Roberts trying to crossfire on Zim to get him to bite at it.
- 2:55:02Two balls, two strikes.
- 2:55:04One out, top of the 11th.
- 2:55:07The bases are empty, and Zim of the batter.
- 2:55:12Roberts pitches to him, outside and high, the ball three.
- 2:55:16So having gotten out in front to Zimmer, he's wasted three now and it's a full count.
- 2:55:22Zimmer standing just off the plate, midway in batter's box.
- 2:55:27Roberts checking up with Lopata for the signs.
- 2:55:30Now comes the 3-2 delivery.
- 2:55:32Sidearm fastball, and Zimmer pops it back foul to the screen.
- 2:55:37Still riding the 3-2, down on the bullpen for Philadelphia.
- 2:55:42Bob Miller gets up and starts to throw.
- 2:55:48One out, top of the 11th.
- 2:55:533-2 pitch by Robin Roberts.
- 2:55:55Sidearm curve, again his pop back foul, this is Wupp on top of the roof.
- 2:56:003-2 count on Don Zimmer.
- 2:56:05One out, no base runner, top half of the 11th inning.
- 2:56:143-2 pitch, curve ball, Zimmer certainly hits back toward the mound, Zim tried to check his swing.
- 2:56:19Roberts comes off the mound, feels fire to Bucing, and that's all for Zimmer.
- 2:56:24Little Don tried to check his swing on a high curve ball.
- 2:56:27Ball hits the bat anyway and trickles back toward the mound.
- 2:56:31So all the two outs, top half of the 11th inning.
- 2:56:34The batter will be Clem LeBine, not hit for himself.
- 2:56:38This is Clem's ball game, the winner-lose.
- 2:56:42He's been on a couple of jams, but he's been able to stay right in there and move out of them.
- 2:56:49So this kind of sets the scene, doesn't it, for the Thursday opener with the Pittsburgh Pirates at Ebbets Field come Thursday.
- 2:56:55Game at 1-30, we'll be on the air with you at 1-25.
- 2:57:01Hope you've got your tickets for that one, that should be a score to two.
- 2:57:04Those Pirates taking a jaunt today, 9-2.
- 2:57:07Ball to LeBine, he checks his swing and takes it outside, 4-1.
- 2:57:13That's Bob Friend went ripping right through today to beat Johnny Antonelli, one of the best left-handers in the business.
- 2:57:19Sidearm curve swung on by LeBine and missed 4-1.
- 2:57:24One ball, one strike. Two down, the bases empty, top of the 11th inning.
- 2:57:28The ball game tied at 6-6.
- 2:57:33LeBine, a right-hand hitter, waits.
- 2:57:36Roberts tries to curve and it swung on, foul-tips.
- 2:57:40Strike two.
- 2:57:42That's how it froze right on the batman.
- 2:57:50Now Roberts is ready again.
- 2:57:53LeBine waits.
- 2:57:54The 1-2 delivery.
- 2:57:56Sidearm curve is hit back to the mound, it's knocked down by Roberts.
- 2:57:59He scampers after, picked up, throws easily to first.
- 2:58:02And LeBine is up.
- 2:58:04Roberts in the past couple of innings has been a pretty busy fellow, not only firing him, but fielding him.
- 2:58:09Nothing across for Brooks, in top of the 11th inning.
- 2:58:19Robin Roberts, strong-armed right-hander, is a quick hitter, and of course tonight he's been batting all the way as a left-hander.
- 2:58:29Coming out to meet Glenn LeBine here in the last half of the 11th inning.
- 2:58:34Pretty good hitting pitcher, Roberts.
- 2:58:38In case you're tuned in with us late, we'll set the Brooklyn defense for you in just a moment.
- 2:58:42LeBine delivers, Roberts after it.
- 2:58:44Curls one up the first base line foul.
- 2:58:46Strike one.
- 2:58:49Glenn LeBine, who came on in the eighth inning out there to win or lose it for Brooklyn, is better remade as Roy Campanella.
- 2:58:55LeBine relieves Big John Newcomb.
- 2:58:58The first base is Gil Hodges.
- 2:59:00The second baseman is Jim Gilliam.
- 2:59:02Shortstop Zimmer.
- 2:59:03Third base, Randy Jackson.
- 2:59:05He knows Somoli in left field, Snyder in center, Carl Cirillo in right.
- 2:59:09LeBine is ready.
- 2:59:10Delivers a one.
- 2:59:11His pitch is swung on and hung out in the center field.
- 2:59:13Snyder comes up to it and makes the catch.
- 2:59:18Roberts is out, one away in the last half of the 11th inning.
- 2:59:24Reggie Ashburn comes moving along now to start another batting go-around for the Philadelphia.
- 2:59:33All tied, 6-6.
- 2:59:37Ashburn is sort of the pesky type leadoff guy.
- 2:59:41He'll punch you, he'll work you for a walk.
- 2:59:44Very fast.
- 2:59:46Can move well.
- 2:59:49LeBine ready.
- 2:59:50Delivers to him and Ashburn hits it right back to the mound in one hop.
- 2:59:53LeBine takes it, turns, fires the first and that's all for Ashburn.
- 2:59:58Oh, two up, two down.
- 3:00:00Last half of the 11th inning and the batter coming up is Chico Fernandez.
- 3:00:10Chico, the former Dodgers.
- 3:00:16With a five-time snipe, two bases and five tries.
- 3:00:19He struck out one time.
- 3:00:20That was for Don Newton.
- 3:00:21LeBine fires to his former teammate and his pitch is high off the face.
- 3:00:26The ball won.
- 3:00:28Two down, last half of the 11th inning.
- 3:00:30No base runner, score 6-6.
- 3:00:34LeBine on the line.
- 3:00:36Starts his motion, delivers an overhand fastball and cuts that one right through for a strike.
- 3:00:46The outfield for Fernandez, laying around a bit to left and not too deep.
- 3:00:50Chico Molley is playing the deepest in left field.
- 3:00:53Randy Jackson pulled about a step and a half off the line deep behind Fird.
- 3:00:56Jim Deep at shortstop, plugging up the hole.
- 3:01:00An overhand curveball in there nicely for a called strike and that's the second one.
- 3:01:05That one flipped in there about waist-high on the outside plate.
- 3:01:12Last half, inning number 11.
- 3:01:16The other extra inning ball game was an 11-inning affair over in the American League today.
- 3:01:21Sidearm curve, called strike three, got him at the waist.
- 3:01:27Fine work that crossfire in there very neatly.
- 3:01:29That's going to be the second strike out of the clem.
- 3:01:31So the 11th inning is over.
- 3:01:33Kim Gilliams, Chico Molley and Snider, first three batters up against Robin Roberts.
- 3:01:37And here again for Chico Molley and Al Helper.
- 3:01:39This is the sixth batting around being started by Gilliam in tonight's play.
- 3:01:43Jim has three singles and five times up, he's three for five.
- 3:01:47Standing in on the top half of the 12th inning in the sixth-six ball game.
- 3:01:50Hitting left-handed against Roberts, Gilliam is ready.
- 3:01:54Roberts comes in there with the first pitch and Gilliam after hits a high fly ball in the straightaway right field.
- 3:01:59It's an easy chance for Bowman.
- 3:02:01Camps under it and takes it.
- 3:02:03All one away, open the 12th inning.
- 3:02:07So it would be the longest ball game of the opening day games.
- 3:02:14Eleven inning went over in the American League between Chicago and Cleveland.
- 3:02:20And the Dodgers and the Phillies participating now in a 12-inning ball game.
- 3:02:25One out, nobody on top of the 12th.
- 3:02:27Gino Somoli standing in.
- 3:02:30Roberts delivers to him and Somoli takes the fast one over for a strike.
- 3:02:38Somoli's been up five times.
- 3:02:40This is his sixth whack at it tonight.
- 3:02:42He has two base hits, two singles.
- 3:02:45Pitch way outside to get away from Lopata.
- 3:02:47That'll be ball one.
- 3:02:51Soon as we find out what happens with Gino, we'll have time for station identification.
- 3:02:57That'll get us in near that 11 o'clock spot.
- 3:03:01Shot on curve, Somoli after it.
- 3:03:03It's a long ball, a steep drive to left field.
- 3:03:06And it is into the left field stand for home run for Gino Somoli to break the 6-6-5.
- 3:03:15He kept telling you that boy could hit that long ball this year and he just did it.
- 3:03:20Drive into left center field stands to put the Dodgers out in front.
- 3:03:24Seven to six, now let's pause for station identification.
- 3:03:27This is the Brooklyn Dodger radio network.
- 3:03:30Dial 1460 WOKO Albany, New York.
- 3:03:35Virgil Finkeley, usually heard at this time, will be delayed until after the ballgame.
- 3:03:43LWS.
- 3:03:46They're standing in.
- 3:03:48Takes the first pitch in there for a strike.
- 3:03:51Yeah, like and well imagined, Gino Somoli will long remember tonight.
- 3:03:55Put the swung on, hit down to the right side,
- 3:03:58gobble up at second base to throw the first in time and Sider goes down.
- 3:04:03Two down in the 12th inning.
- 3:04:07Gino Somoli, by parking that ball into left center field lower deck,
- 3:04:11hits his first major league home run.
- 3:04:16From now on we'll have to call him Muckle Somoli.
- 3:04:20He's hitting that ball well this year, believe me.
- 3:04:23Here's Carl Perillo standing in now.
- 3:04:26The Dodgers lead it, seven to six on 12th.
- 3:04:29Sidearm curve for Perillo is low and outside.
- 3:04:33Ball one.
- 3:04:37The Dodgers have hit three home runs tonight.
- 3:04:39Zimmer and Somoli, the two young fellows who wanted to play in this ball club,
- 3:04:42have hit home runs and the veteran Gil Hud.
- 3:04:45Next pitch is swung on by Perillo.
- 3:04:46He pops it up right up over our heads.
- 3:04:49That goes to the roof out of play.
- 3:04:52One ball and one strike.
- 3:05:05Perillo back in batter's box now.
- 3:05:09Sidearm pitch by Roberts is way outside.
- 3:05:11He gets away from Lopata.
- 3:05:14Two balls and a strike to count on Carl Perillo with two down.
- 3:05:18The ball is empty and the Dodgers by virtue of Somoli's home run,
- 3:05:22leading it seven to six.
- 3:05:27Shapr Bear send it to you from Philadelphia.
- 3:05:30Sidearm curve is low.
- 3:05:34Down on Perillo, three and one.
- 3:05:36Miller up throwing again down in the Philadelphia bullpen.
- 3:05:43He's up right now. You're enjoying America's oldest lager bear, Shapr.
- 3:05:49Sidearm pitch is in there for a strike.
- 3:05:52A three-two count on Carl Perillo.
- 3:05:58Boy, over 37,000 folks here tonight have been enjoying this one.
- 3:06:01It's been nip and tuck all the way.
- 3:06:04It's seen plenty of action.
- 3:06:06Plenty of it.
- 3:06:08Twenty-three base hits, 13 runs.
- 3:06:11Sidearm curve low and outside for ball four.
- 3:06:14Perillo throws his stick away and drops off the first base on the fourth base
- 3:06:17on balls given up by Roberts.
- 3:06:19Coming up to the plate now is Gil Hodges.
- 3:06:22Gil has hit one of the three home runs the Dodgers have manufactured tonight.
- 3:06:26That's his only base blow and he has a run driven in with it, of course.
- 3:06:32He won for four. He walked one time.
- 3:06:39Roberts to the stretch, checks Perillo at first.
- 3:06:42Delivers the plate to the sidearm pitch that's a little high.
- 3:06:46One ball and no strikes.
- 3:06:49No ball game tomorrow for the Brooklyn Dodgers,
- 3:06:52but they'll be getting ready for the big one Thursday afternoon
