- 0:00Speaker 1: Hi, Ranger Reed here. And Ranger Brooke. Whoa! Look out,
- 0:05Speaker 1: Ranger Reed. Welcome to Creation Nuggets. Follow us. The ranger
- 0:12Speaker 1: station's just ahead.
- 0:14Speaker 2: Whoa! Whoa! Oh, good. Thanks for coming into Trekkers in
- 0:29Speaker 2: the middle of the night. I promise you, Ranger Reed,
- 0:33Speaker 2: you've never seen a bigger mosquito. It's gigantic.
- 0:39Speaker 1: A mosquito the size of a plum? That sounds like
- 0:42Speaker 1: a record size.
- 0:44Speaker 2: I was working, but I can't work with such a
- 0:46Speaker 2: bloodthirsty insect on the loose.
- 0:50Speaker 1: Never fear, Mr. Simon. Your ranger is near.
- 0:53Speaker 2: There it is, Ranger Reed. See it hitting the wall
- 0:55Speaker 2: as it flies to the ceiling?
- 0:57Speaker 1: Oh, you have a crane fly aboard. Some people call
- 1:01Speaker 1: them mosquito hawks.
- 1:03Speaker 2: Oh, I like that name. Does it eat mosquitoes? Maybe
- 1:08Speaker 2: I want it in Trekkers.
- 1:10Speaker 1: These insects might look like a giant mosquito with their
- 1:12Speaker 1: large wings and long, fragile legs, but they're harmless to
- 1:17Speaker 1: humans and to mosquitoes.
- 1:19Speaker 2: Oh, I guess that's good. Harmless to me, then.
- 1:23Speaker 1: Yes. As adults, mosquito hawks don't bite or sting. During
- 1:27Speaker 1: their short adult life of 10 to 15 days, they're
- 1:30Speaker 1: just looking to lay eggs.
- 1:32Speaker 2: Well, mosquito hawks don't seem to contribute much to our world,
- 1:36Speaker 2: except to terrorize innocent store owners in their offices at night.
- 1:40Speaker 1: Contribute? Well, commonly, the larva of the species feeds on
- 1:45Speaker 1: plant roots. This benefits the soil by breaking down organic matter.
- 1:49Speaker 2: So, during their humble life beneath the ground, they are
- 1:53Speaker 2: improving the ground that grows our food?
- 1:55Speaker 1: Like I always say... All of God's creation is beautiful, amazing,
- 2:00Speaker 1: and fascinating, and God's love is there for us to see.
- 2:04Speaker 2: It reminds me that no matter how small we may
- 2:06Speaker 2: feel in this world, God has a place for us
- 2:09Speaker 2: to fill in His work.
- 2:11Speaker 1: Exactly.
- 2:12Speaker 2: I still don't like how mosquito hawks look. How do
- 2:15Speaker 2: I minimize their visits to trekkers?
- 2:18Speaker 1: They are nocturnal, primarily active at night, and attracted to light,
- 2:22Speaker 1: so don't leave your office light on at night. Ah.
- 2:26Speaker 2: I had the door open for fresh air. Soon it'll
- 2:29Speaker 2: be winter, and I'm enjoying the warm air.
- 2:32Speaker 1: You could open a window. With a screen, unless you
- 2:35Speaker 1: want more flies as customers. Oh, no.
- 2:40Speaker 2: They don't spend any money and scare away the other customers, so... No.
- 2:45Speaker 1: The mosquito hawks are breeding and laying eggs a little
- 2:47Speaker 1: late this year. I'm going back to the ranger station
- 2:50Speaker 1: to check last year's records.
- 2:52Speaker 2: What do we do with the mosquito hawks?
- 2:55Speaker 1: Tell them... that you look for their larva beneath the
- 2:58Speaker 1: ground in January.
- 2:59Speaker 2: Ranger Reed, since you're here, I have a nice sail on.
- 3:03Speaker 1: Mr. Simon, I'm not a midnight shopper. Now get on
- 3:07Speaker 1: home and turn the light off before your store is
- 3:09Speaker 1: a fly shop.
- 3:10Speaker 2: You got it, Ranger.
- 3:13Speaker 1: Mountaineers, join us here again next time for more Creation Nuggets,
- 3:18Speaker 1: a Discovery Mountain mini-adventure. Discovery Mountain is a production of
- 3:22Speaker 1: The Voice of Prophecy.
