- 0:08Speaker 1: Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye star in the holiday classic,
- 0:11Speaker 1: White Christmas.
- 0:14Speaker 2: Ho, ho, ho!
- 0:20Speaker 3: No!
- 0:23Speaker 4: Oh, my God!
- 0:24Speaker 3: Merry Christmas! Merry Christmas, George!
- 0:27Speaker 1: Merry Christmas, George!
- 0:29Speaker 3: Merry Christmas, movie hoes!
- 0:33Speaker 2: It's the gift that.
- 0:34Speaker 3: Keeps on giving the whole year.
- 0:53Speaker 5: Jingle bell, jingle bell, jingle bell rock. Jingle bells swing
- 0:58Speaker 5: and jingle bells ring.
- 1:01Speaker 2: Snowin' and blowin' up bushels of fun.
- 1:05Speaker 3: Now the jingle hop has begun.
- 1:09Speaker 2: What's up and welcome to Movie Meltdown. I'm Brian.
- 1:12Speaker 1: And I'm George.
- 1:12Speaker 2: And we're coming to you live via digital recording from
- 1:15Speaker 2: the quaint small town that surely is going to bring
- 1:19Speaker 2: me love this December. That is the Oddity Studios. We'll
- 1:22Speaker 2: get back to that later. And yes, we've survived Thanksgiving.
- 1:29Speaker 2: Some of us had a little more to contend with
- 1:31Speaker 2: than others. See the last Horror Club episode. But some
- 1:36Speaker 2: of us survived and made it through.
- 1:38Speaker 4: And now we're in December, and we've already been essentially
- 1:42Speaker 4: swallowed up by the holidays.
- 1:44Speaker 2: Indeed.
- 1:45Speaker 1: Indeed.
- 1:46Speaker 4: As we were discussing what we should talk about next,
- 1:49Speaker 4: I was like, well, I mean, I liked our 82 roundabout,
- 1:53Speaker 4: whatever the hell we want to get to next option.
- 1:55Speaker 2: So I was like, what if we did that? Only
- 1:57Speaker 2: holiday movies. Christmas.
- 2:01Speaker 4: Christmas onslaught and then everything that comes with it.
- 2:06Speaker 2: We could throw in any other end of the year
- 2:08Speaker 2: holidays that we want to.
- 2:10Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 2:10Speaker 2: I didn't have much else in there, but who knows?
- 2:13Speaker 2: I feel like Festivus is underrepresented in these films, but whatever.
- 2:19Speaker 1: I am totally willing to wrestle you to the ground.
- 2:22Speaker 1: That's how the episode was going to end.
- 2:24Speaker 2: I got a lot of problems with you people. I'm
- 2:27Speaker 2: going to start listing them off.
- 2:29Speaker 1: I'm just sipping my lovely hot chocolate here.
- 2:32Speaker 4: So that's a good way to ease into it. We
- 2:35Speaker 4: decided I'd throw out some hot chocolate. Some people have
- 2:38Speaker 4: issues with hot beverages, so I had to check with you.
- 2:40Speaker 2: Hey, it's good for the vocal cords. You're good with that.
- 2:43Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah. But along those lines, I also thought we
- 2:47Speaker 4: should have some sort of snack. And really, I'm like,
- 2:51Speaker 4: I don't know, there's many different things. But then I
- 2:54Speaker 4: remembered something.
- 2:56Speaker 2: Uh-oh. What could it possibly be? The suspense?
- 3:00Speaker 6: Oh.
- 3:02Speaker 2: Someone brought these pirouette things.
- 3:06Speaker 4: To an event like years ago and I don't I
- 3:09Speaker 4: don't knew of them I don't think I'd had them
- 3:11Speaker 4: and then I was like oh god these are really
- 3:13Speaker 4: good oh yeah they're classy and since then I've been
- 3:16Speaker 4: trying to think of a good reason to have some
- 3:19Speaker 4: and I was like hot chocolate and these weird sticks
- 3:23Speaker 4: of wafer cream filled spread I don't know whatever it
- 3:27Speaker 4: is so this is I thought the old school version
- 3:30Speaker 4: was hazelnut so there's that one but there's also a dark.
- 3:32Speaker 1: Chocolate oh fancy y'all Well, thank you very much. Don't
- 3:37Speaker 1: mind if I do.
- 3:39Speaker 2: Feel free to partake in these wonderful cream-filled wafers, according
- 3:43Speaker 2: to this package here. We're not officially sponsored by Pirouettes,
- 3:47Speaker 2: but I'll take it. I mean, if they're up for it,
- 3:50Speaker 2: I will plug them every episode. These are delicious.
- 3:53Speaker 1: How can a million TJ Maxx impulse buy checkout line,
- 3:57Speaker 1: you know, purchases be wrong? Yummy.
- 4:03Speaker 4: And that was what I heard them referred to online. Now,
- 4:06Speaker 4: according to this, they have an entirely different name on there,
- 4:08Speaker 4: but since we're not plugging them, fine.
- 4:10Speaker 7: I don't really care, but.
- 4:11Speaker 1: Yeah, they're... whatever. These are the Hydrex of pirouette cookies.
- 4:15Speaker 2: I guess. I don't know. I'll take it. They're delicious.
- 4:18Speaker 2: There you go.
- 4:20Speaker 1: So, we're talking Christmas movies here, but that is an
- 4:23Speaker 1: extremely wide-ranging topic, despite the fact.
- 4:27Speaker 3: Massive!
- 4:28Speaker 1: Despite the fact that it's just a holiday genre, but
- 4:31Speaker 1: there are so many we could discuss, right?
- 4:36Speaker 4: And again, in previous fashion, I thought, well, let's just
- 4:42Speaker 4: bounce around all over the place.
- 4:44Speaker 1: Okay.
- 4:44Speaker 4: Because I think there are general overall things I want
- 4:47Speaker 4: to look at, but at the same time, we each
- 4:50Speaker 4: did some individual outside research, aka watched a couple of movies.
- 4:56Speaker 4: So we definitely can get into these individual films.
- 5:00Speaker 2: I've got.
- 5:02Speaker 4: Several questions that came about in mind, so yeah, I
- 5:05Speaker 4: definitely want to address those.
- 5:07Speaker 2: But I also thought a good way to ease our
- 5:09Speaker 2: way in, because a lot of these episodes will kind
- 5:11Speaker 2: of kick things off talking about something we've seen lately.
- 5:13Speaker 1: Sure.
- 5:14Speaker 4: And then this, I watched something and I was like, oh,
- 5:16Speaker 4: and this was a perfect tie-in. And in particular, I
- 5:19Speaker 4: thought you would be the perfect person to discuss this with.
- 5:22Speaker 2: Okay. I just recently watched the first two episodes of Hawkeye. Ah!
- 5:26Speaker 2: Which is totally Christmas themed.
- 5:28Speaker 1: Very much so, yes.
- 5:29Speaker 2: So, I'm assuming you've seen them?
- 5:32Speaker 1: I certainly have. Yes, I was waiting on bated breath. Because,
- 5:36Speaker 1: I mean, I grew up a Marvel kid. I've been
- 5:38Speaker 1: reading comic books since I was three years old. I'm
- 5:40Speaker 1: 45 years old now. Do the math, folks.
- 5:43Speaker 2: I don't like math.
- 5:45Speaker 1: I've been reading comics for a long time.
- 5:47Speaker 2: That's why I watch movies, so I don't have to
- 5:49Speaker 2: do math.
- 5:51Speaker 1: But I am primarily a Marvel reader, though I do
- 5:54Speaker 1: go to D.C. and Independence, all over the place. But, yeah,
- 5:57Speaker 1: I am an Avengers kid. My very first comic book
- 6:00Speaker 1: was Avengers 168. And there you go. So anything that's
- 6:04Speaker 1: Avengers adjacent, if you've been a member, you were there
- 6:08Speaker 1: for about five minutes, I'm all there. So Hawkeye, definitely.
- 6:13Speaker 1: Being a West Coast Avengers fan also, which was a spinoff,
- 6:16Speaker 1: there was lots of love in that category as well.
- 6:20Speaker 1: Hawkeye was kind of the charter member of the West
- 6:22Speaker 1: Coast Avengers.
- 6:24Speaker 2: Just Avengers wearing sunglasses all the time.
- 6:26Speaker 1: Mm-hmm.
- 6:27Speaker 4: So I did want to ask you, knowing that you
- 6:29Speaker 4: have way more invested in comics in general. I do.
- 6:33Speaker 4: How much of the overall story is what ends up,
- 6:37Speaker 4: at some point at least, I know every few years
- 6:40Speaker 4: they reboot everything. But at some point, because I thought
- 6:43Speaker 4: it was interesting that Hawkeye has a daughter, like that
- 6:45Speaker 4: last Avengers movie, we see him showing his daughter how
- 6:48Speaker 4: to shoot. So I'm like, it seems like that would
- 6:50Speaker 4: be the go-to handing the baton.
- 6:52Speaker 2: Here, look, I'm an old man. You take over, kid. But...
- 6:56Speaker 2: Maybe he.
- 6:56Speaker 4: Also just wouldn't want to put his own child in
- 6:58Speaker 4: that lifestyle since he's been the entirety of these movies,
- 7:01Speaker 4: at least trying to get the hell out of the Avengers.
- 7:04Speaker 2: So now that he sort of is, maybe he wouldn't
- 7:07Speaker 2: want to have his kids be involved. So is this
- 7:11Speaker 2: character that, because.
- 7:13Speaker 4: I really like Haley Steinfeld in general, so I didn't
- 7:15Speaker 4: know if that character already existed in the comics.
- 7:18Speaker 2: And I feel like she does, but was it always
- 7:21Speaker 2: her that took over? Or were there many times that Hawkeye.
- 7:24Speaker 4: Mantle has been handed off, or how does this story
- 7:28Speaker 4: go in the comics?
- 7:29Speaker 1: The Kate Bishop character is pretty much how she is
- 7:31Speaker 1: in the books. She is someone who comes from wealth.
- 7:36Speaker 1: She's the socialite kind of daughter that wants nothing to
- 7:38Speaker 1: do with the socialite life. She is inspired to be
- 7:41Speaker 1: a superhero, primarily inspired by Hawkeye.
- 7:43Speaker 2: We need more Batmans is what you're telling me. Yes, yeah.
- 7:46Speaker 2: Rich people that just decide to be a superhero.
- 7:48Speaker 1: Yeah, she doesn't want anything to do with the wealth
- 7:50Speaker 1: and going to parties and all that kind of jazz.
- 7:52Speaker 1: She wants to go out and fight crime and do things.
- 7:56Speaker 2: I mean, we all want that, right? Exactly. I stalk
- 7:59Speaker 2: this area at night in a cape. Is that not cool?
- 8:02Speaker 1: In a mask? Yeah, sure, perfectly normal, yeah. As for
- 8:07Speaker 1: the similarities, Hawkeye's kind of been done two different ways
- 8:10Speaker 1: in the comics. The traditional Hawkeye, he doesn't have a family.
- 8:14Speaker 1: There was one book series they did, kind of like
- 8:16Speaker 1: an alternate universe Marvel stuff.
- 8:18Speaker 2: They did a lot of that.
- 8:19Speaker 1: Yeah, called The Ultimate Universe, where the Miles Morales character
- 8:22Speaker 1: came from. Anywho, but that version of Hawkeye, he had
- 8:26Speaker 1: a wife and kids, and they were actually killed at
- 8:29Speaker 1: one point. So it kind of causes Hawkeye to go
- 8:31Speaker 1: even deeper. So that Hawkeye wasn't so much, he was
- 8:34Speaker 1: a little more of a serious guy, whereas the traditional
- 8:36Speaker 1: Marvel Universe guy was kind of a goofball a bit.
- 8:39Speaker 1: So this movie version of Hawkeye is kind of a
- 8:41Speaker 1: combination of the two. He's a little more serious, but yeah,
- 8:45Speaker 1: he never really wanted to pass down the stuff to
- 8:47Speaker 1: his kids. So definitely Kate Bishop is the legacy character.
- 8:50Speaker 4: It is interesting, just the entire run of these MCU movies,
- 8:54Speaker 4: that he is the outlier of the group. Everybody else
- 8:58Speaker 4: are a bunch of loners and outcasts, and they really are,
- 9:02Speaker 4: without the Avengers family, they're kind of, miserable really even
- 9:06Speaker 4: somebody like Tony Stark who back and forth he's with
- 9:09Speaker 4: her he's not with her he wants to have a
- 9:10Speaker 4: kid even when he has a kid give it a
- 9:12Speaker 4: couple years so it's like you don't really have a
- 9:15Speaker 4: happy home life with anybody else really I mean Hawkeye's
- 9:18Speaker 4: the one that's always trying to like get away from
- 9:21Speaker 4: the Avengers so he can have this happy home life
- 9:24Speaker 4: so again he was always a different version get a little.
- 9:28Speaker 2: With Ant-Man I guess but still like you.
- 9:30Speaker 4: Don't really get much of that from our core people
- 9:32Speaker 4: they're all kind of broken and lonely sure yeah it
- 9:36Speaker 4: is what leads them to the avengers yeah and it's kind.
- 9:39Speaker 1: Of interesting too they did that with hawkeye because um
- 9:42Speaker 1: the comics version of him he grew up in a
- 9:46Speaker 1: like basically he grew up in a circus like carnival
- 9:48Speaker 1: kind of atmosphere that was all like a front for
- 9:51Speaker 1: petty crime like everybody like went out and robbed banks
- 9:54Speaker 1: and you know you know mugged people what kind of
- 9:56Speaker 1: stuff like that so he learned how to shoot how
- 9:59Speaker 1: to do stuff like that from basically a bunch of criminals.
- 10:02Speaker 1: And then he realized the error of his ways and
- 10:04Speaker 1: became a superhero and hence Hawkeye was born. But he's
- 10:08Speaker 1: always kind of like a smart aleck kind of character
- 10:10Speaker 1: in the comics. He always tries to really ride Captain America.
- 10:15Speaker 1: He's like the lame old man to him. But he
- 10:17Speaker 1: also has a tremendous amount of respect for Captain America.
- 10:20Speaker 1: So it's like, why do you keep riding him like
- 10:22Speaker 1: he's your old man you want to keep needling, but
- 10:24Speaker 1: then you love everything he does?
- 10:26Speaker 2: No, I get that. Because I've realized that over the years.
- 10:29Speaker 4: If I don't give you hell, it probably means I
- 10:32Speaker 4: genuinely don't like you. There are people that just annoy
- 10:35Speaker 4: the hell out of me, and I just don't talk
- 10:37Speaker 4: to them. So if I'm being a jerk to you,
- 10:39Speaker 4: it probably means I kind of like you.
- 10:41Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly. So I get that. I get that, man.
- 10:44Speaker 1: Yeah, the TV series is primarily based off of the
- 10:48Speaker 1: Matt Fraction, David Aja run of Hawkeye. It was kind
- 10:51Speaker 1: of a solo book that kind of really paired he
- 10:53Speaker 1: and Kate together for the first time. The dog was introduced.
- 10:57Speaker 1: The Russian mobsters in the tracksuits that say bro were
- 11:00Speaker 1: in there. So it's a really fun series.
- 11:02Speaker 2: The dog seems so specific.
- 11:04Speaker 4: I was like, that's definitely something that like you wouldn't
- 11:07Speaker 4: just throw that in for the hell of it.
- 11:09Speaker 1: America, you're about to fall in love with Lucky the
- 11:10Speaker 1: Pizza Dog.
- 11:11Speaker 2: All right.
- 11:11Speaker 6: There you go.
- 11:13Speaker 2: But yeah, I do like, they did a really good job,
- 11:15Speaker 2: I think.
- 11:16Speaker 4: I enjoyed these first two episodes. And just sort of
- 11:19Speaker 4: creating her in the span of an opening theme. You know,
- 11:23Speaker 4: it's just like the fact that we get her as
- 11:24Speaker 4: a little kid. I also, I'll get back to that
- 11:27Speaker 4: in a minute. But we get her as a little kid,
- 11:28Speaker 4: and then just within the credits, we see, I need
- 11:31Speaker 4: a bow and arrow.
- 11:32Speaker 2: Sure, yeah.
- 11:33Speaker 4: She becomes the bow and arrow champion. I need to
- 11:36Speaker 4: learn to... throw people around the room. So I'm going
- 11:39Speaker 4: to be a black belt by the time I'm 15.
- 11:41Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 11:42Speaker 4: I'm going to learn fencing. I'm going to like any traditional,
- 11:45Speaker 4: you know, sport type thing that kind of makes you
- 11:47Speaker 4: a badass. Like here she is like becoming great at it.
- 11:50Speaker 4: So I like just in the opening credits, more or less,
- 11:53Speaker 4: we get that little introduction enough that we're like, okay,
- 11:57Speaker 4: here she is as a somewhat grown up now.
- 11:59Speaker 2: And she's, kind of ready to kick.
- 12:01Speaker 4: People's ass but also she's not trained in any real
- 12:03Speaker 4: sense so this is where hawkeye comes in so they
- 12:06Speaker 4: do a good job of setting that up i do
- 12:09Speaker 4: want to say also back to that original point i
- 12:11Speaker 4: like that they continue in this series films and now
- 12:15Speaker 4: the running series to look at how these events affect
- 12:19Speaker 4: each other i feel like so many movies don't do
- 12:22Speaker 4: that and definitely the attempted dc universe just doesn't give
- 12:26Speaker 4: a shit about anybody yeah so it's like The fact
- 12:29Speaker 4: that the Marvel Universe really, so much so that we
- 12:32Speaker 4: created a villain out of that in the Spider-Man series.
- 12:35Speaker 2: Sure. Vulture was a regular guy. It's like he was
- 12:38Speaker 2: just trying to do his job, take care of his family.
- 12:40Speaker 4: And the fallout of the Avengers and what they did
- 12:44Speaker 4: ruined his life.
- 12:45Speaker 2: And ended up sending him down this road. So I
- 12:47Speaker 2: don't know.
- 12:48Speaker 4: He's actually one of my favorite characters, if not villains,
- 12:51Speaker 4: in that whole MCU because he's such a.
- 12:54Speaker 7: Real grounded person.
- 12:56Speaker 2: But also because he's only created because of the events
- 13:00Speaker 2: of the Avengers.
- 13:01Speaker 1: And making a fairly non-interesting villain being the Vulture. I mean,
- 13:05Speaker 1: he's a classic Spidey villain, but he's an old man
- 13:07Speaker 1: in a wingsuit.
- 13:08Speaker 4: I give all credit to Michael Keaton. Again, that is
- 13:12Speaker 4: one of my favorite performances, definitely in the MCU.
- 13:15Speaker 2: Like, he brings so.
- 13:16Speaker 4: Much to that character that could have been just run-of-the-mill. Like,
- 13:20Speaker 4: up until that point, they were doing some.
- 13:21Speaker 2: Pretty bland villains along the way, and like, He's so
- 13:25Speaker 2: interesting and maybe is more interesting than our Peter at
- 13:29Speaker 2: that point. Like, Peter doesn't have much to do except
- 13:31Speaker 2: be a dorky kid. So, like, introducing him.
- 13:34Speaker 4: In that movie with Peter, it's like he kind of
- 13:36Speaker 4: steals the thunder as far as, like, the drama and
- 13:39Speaker 4: the conflict away from what Peter's doing.
- 13:41Speaker 2: He's just trying to, like, hang on for the ride
- 13:43Speaker 2: at that point.
- 13:44Speaker 1: And what a fun scene, too, of when he goes
- 13:46Speaker 1: to pick up MJ- further date or whatnot.
- 13:49Speaker 2: And then like, there's dad. It's like, Oh crap. I,
- 13:53Speaker 2: we know you, I know you, you, you know me. Shit.
- 13:58Speaker 2: I still go to as one of, not even MCU.
- 14:01Speaker 4: Like maybe one of my favorite acting scenes ever that
- 14:05Speaker 4: in the car.
- 14:06Speaker 2: Where he's like, he's like, well, it's not MJ. It's
- 14:09Speaker 2: the other girl.
- 14:10Speaker 4: But like the other guy, he's like going in the dance.
- 14:12Speaker 4: I want to have a talk with Peter. Him that
- 14:13Speaker 4: little scene with him in the front seat. Peter's in
- 14:17Speaker 4: the back.
- 14:17Speaker 2: You don't really even see the gun.
- 14:19Speaker 4: The gun is just sort of hinted at that like
- 14:22Speaker 4: he suddenly pulls out a gun and starts making demands
- 14:27Speaker 4: and threats about, you know, what your intentions are with
- 14:30Speaker 4: my daughter's scene, but also on a very epic villain level.
- 14:33Speaker 4: So I'm like, it is so subtle and so masterfully
- 14:37Speaker 4: done that, yeah, Michael Keaton, amazing in that movie.
- 14:40Speaker 1: Yeah, I kind of hope we get to see a
- 14:42Speaker 1: glimpse of him in this new upcoming Spider-Man movie coming
- 14:45Speaker 1: up on the 17th.
- 14:47Speaker 2: He's definitely coming back in some new, in that Sony
- 14:50Speaker 2: offshoot version, because they showed him in, which one is it?
- 14:54Speaker 2: Is it Morbius?
- 14:55Speaker 4: I think they had him featured in the trailer already.
- 14:58Speaker 4: Plus then there's, I'm assuming, crossover into the Blade territory.
- 15:02Speaker 4: So I'm sure in that weird little Sony offshoot, he's
- 15:05Speaker 4: going to.
- 15:06Speaker 2: Come back. I'd rather have him in the regular MCU.
- 15:08Speaker 2: I'm a little more worried about the Sony offshoot, but whatever.
- 15:11Speaker 1: The whole thing, the Blade's going to be in the
- 15:12Speaker 1: traditional MCU, so he and Morbius may actually not cross paths. Hmm.
- 15:17Speaker 2: Interesting.
- 15:17Speaker 1: And seeing as technically in the MCU, even though if
- 15:21Speaker 1: you watch Loki, they name-dropped vampires in the MCU, we
- 15:24Speaker 1: officially have not seen vampires.
- 15:26Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 15:27Speaker 1: But if you have seen the movie Eternals, there is
- 15:31Speaker 1: a certain stinger scene, and we don't see.
- 15:35Speaker 1: Mr mashallah ali just yet but there's a very distinctive
- 15:39Speaker 1: voice on the other end of that camera and i'm
- 15:42Speaker 1: very excited about that we will get back to that
- 15:45Speaker 1: down yes we will yes we will but.
- 15:46Speaker 2: To get back to this one but yeah i i
- 15:48Speaker 2: do really like that they've gone all in on the
- 15:50Speaker 2: christmas theme like the whole thing is almost like a
- 15:53Speaker 2: countdown of like look i said i'd be home for
- 15:55Speaker 2: christmas so like The whole arc of this story is
- 15:58Speaker 2: being sort of jammed into the Christmas vacation time.
- 16:01Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 16:02Speaker 4: And like it really like every episode where we're seeing
- 16:05Speaker 4: skaters at 30 Rock. We're seeing like, you know, everything
- 16:08Speaker 4: going to see the Christmas tree. Like everything's New York
- 16:11Speaker 4: at Christmas kind of jammed into this weird version. And
- 16:15Speaker 4: I'm enjoying that. I wonder if in the long run
- 16:19Speaker 4: that will play. I mean, because it's falling right at
- 16:22Speaker 4: Christmas now.
- 16:23Speaker 2: Sure. Yeah. Are people going to be ready to rewatch
- 16:25Speaker 2: it down the line in July? I don't know. Like,
- 16:28Speaker 2: I don't think about it as.
- 16:29Speaker 4: An issue with like Iron Man three, which is also
- 16:32Speaker 4: a very Christmas centric movie. Sure. So I don't know
- 16:35Speaker 4: that it really will factor in, but I guess you
- 16:38Speaker 4: have to worry about that stuff when you're investing millions
- 16:40Speaker 4: of dollars in these things.
- 16:41Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 16:42Speaker 1: I'm saying it's, it's not really much of a concern
- 16:44Speaker 1: for me.
- 16:44Speaker 2: So, but I really kind of like how much they
- 16:47Speaker 2: tied it to Christmas.
- 16:48Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 16:48Speaker 2: It's a lot of fun.
- 16:48Speaker 1: And of course, I mean, I'm, They're going to get
- 16:50Speaker 1: much more into the buddy cop aspect over the next
- 16:52Speaker 1: couple episodes, I'm sure. So I think it was at
- 16:55Speaker 1: Disney Plus Day they showed an extended scene. It's like
- 16:58Speaker 1: a fight scene that's in the car. Like they're in
- 17:00Speaker 1: the car running from the gangsters. And it's kind of
- 17:02Speaker 1: they use the camera, that 360 kind of hand. We're like,
- 17:05Speaker 1: where's the guy holding the camera? Because there's no way. Anyway,
- 17:09Speaker 1: it's a really well done scene if you haven't seen it.
- 17:11Speaker 1: But it's probably coming up, I'd say, in episode, I
- 17:12Speaker 1: would think, three or four.
- 17:13Speaker 2: I do like their dynamics.
- 17:15Speaker 4: Between the two of them even just in that one
- 17:17Speaker 4: episode where we got them crossing over it's already kind
- 17:20Speaker 4: of fun and she's like respectful of him but at
- 17:24Speaker 4: the same time like hey look i do my thing
- 17:26Speaker 4: like you got to give me a little chance to
- 17:28Speaker 4: you know i want you to teach me this stuff
- 17:30Speaker 4: but i'm also good at what i do like.
- 17:32Speaker 7: It's it's a fun dynamic so yeah they they made
- 17:35Speaker 7: a little few tweaks of course because like in the
- 17:37Speaker 7: uh the comic run they kind of introduced the two
- 17:39Speaker 7: of them together hawkeye is kind of dynamic is that
- 17:43Speaker 7: when he's Hawkeye with the Avengers, he's saving the world.
- 17:46Speaker 1: When he's Clint Barton at home, he's a screw up.
- 17:49Speaker 1: He has no social life.
- 17:51Speaker 2: No friends.
- 17:51Speaker 1: He lives in a rundown building that he owns and
- 17:54Speaker 1: no one else in the building pays rent, but it's
- 17:56Speaker 1: a rundown building.
- 17:57Speaker 2: Yeah. And here's this kid.
- 17:58Speaker 1: That pops up his doorstep that basically wants to be him,
- 18:02Speaker 1: but also thinks that she is better than him. And
- 18:04Speaker 1: in most respects, she is correct.
- 18:06Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 18:07Speaker 1: So, It's just really interesting. So it's kind of like
- 18:10Speaker 1: she ends up being the mother hen kind of dynamic,
- 18:13Speaker 1: even though she's younger. But yeah, it's a lot of fun.
- 18:16Speaker 1: So the way they've kind of tweaked things.
- 18:17Speaker 4: And interesting that they've, at least so far, so heavily
- 18:21Speaker 4: featured the Ronin character. Especially in this MCU version, that
- 18:27Speaker 4: is his lowest point in his life. There's no worse
- 18:32Speaker 4: point that he existed that he's... had to deal with
- 18:36Speaker 4: that and created that character out of all this like
- 18:39Speaker 4: anger and hostility and loneliness and so like the fact
- 18:43Speaker 4: that that's sort of coming back to haunt him now
- 18:44Speaker 4: when he's you know as Hawkeye he's on the up
- 18:47Speaker 4: and up and he's like not gonna go kill people
- 18:49Speaker 4: whereas Ronan had no hope anymore and just murdered people
- 18:53Speaker 4: whenever he felt like it so it is sort of
- 18:55Speaker 4: like that ghost coming back to haunt him now that
- 18:58Speaker 4: he's sort of out of the picture and living his
- 19:00Speaker 4: normal life.
- 19:01Speaker 2: Again that yeah this Ronan's come back to.
- 19:04Speaker 4: Come back out of the past to absolutely reckon with.
- 19:07Speaker 4: So that's, that's kind of interesting too.
- 19:09Speaker 7: But yeah.
- 19:10Speaker 1: And I'm a big fan of this Jack Duquesne guy.
- 19:12Speaker 1: I mean, you know, we, he's obviously going to be
- 19:15Speaker 1: a villain, you know, it's like, he's, you know, he's
- 19:17Speaker 1: smarmy as all hell, you know, just you, you want
- 19:21Speaker 1: to just like, just file a restraining order on it
- 19:23Speaker 1: anytime he walks.
- 19:24Speaker 2: On the screen.
- 19:25Speaker 1: But yeah, I just, yeah, of course I know what
- 19:28Speaker 1: he's going to become, but I won't spoil it for
- 19:30Speaker 1: those who are uninitiated. But yeah, We're looking for some
- 19:34Speaker 1: fun stuff here.
- 19:34Speaker 2: Yep. So that was a good way to ease into
- 19:37Speaker 2: this little Christmas thrown in the middle of some geeky
- 19:41Speaker 2: comic book talk. Absolutely. Now let's just get all in.
- 19:46Speaker 4: As we were throwing this out yesterday and I described it.
- 19:50Speaker 2: It as the onslaught of holiday movies so i was
- 19:52Speaker 2: like well there there's our episode so that's what we
- 19:55Speaker 2: will now get into so where do we even begin um.
- 20:02Speaker 4: I mean i've got specific three that i watched i
- 20:06Speaker 4: think you said you watched three as well i did
- 20:08Speaker 4: yep that was just sort of since we decided to
- 20:11Speaker 4: do this just had enough time to cram those in
- 20:13Speaker 4: there and some hawkeye so like that's Really just recent stuff.
- 20:18Speaker 4: So that's why I was like, I don't want it
- 20:19Speaker 4: to be overly focused because it's just going to be
- 20:22Speaker 4: the random stuff that came about, you know, in the last.
- 20:24Speaker 2: Few weeks when we decided, hey, let's just do this.
- 20:27Speaker 4: So it's just sort of focused on this whatever the
- 20:30Speaker 4: hell came together in the last minute, which I feel
- 20:32Speaker 4: like is a good representation of everyone's December now. Because
- 20:36Speaker 4: as soon as it kicks in, well, let's be real.
- 20:38Speaker 4: They start Christmas and when I'm still playing with my
- 20:41Speaker 4: Halloween toys. So, like, the fact that it kicks in,
- 20:44Speaker 4: but definitely by the time you get past Thanksgiving, like,
- 20:46Speaker 4: it's all.
- 20:48Speaker 2: That's just everything. In fact, annoyingly so.
- 20:51Speaker 4: On the night after Thanksgiving this year, on that Friday,
- 20:56Speaker 4: all three of the main networks played their whichever ones
- 20:59Speaker 4: they owned of the animated holiday specials.
- 21:02Speaker 2: Oh, yeah. At the same time. Which, as a kid.
- 21:05Speaker 4: used to drive me insane that would be a nightmare
- 21:07Speaker 4: yeah you couldn't watch them all at the same time
- 21:09Speaker 4: now granted now you can kind of just watch whatever
- 21:10Speaker 4: the hell you want digital wise but I still like
- 21:13Speaker 4: I'm watching it on antenna I'm old school so like
- 21:15Speaker 4: I'm sitting there going.
- 21:16Speaker 2: I can't watch all these you're killing me.
- 21:18Speaker 1: It's the pre-adolescent soapy's choice.
- 21:20Speaker 4: It really is bastards making me choose between my favorite
- 21:25Speaker 4: animated holiday specials which are not always right up there
- 21:30Speaker 4: when you compare them to these other movies those are
- 21:33Speaker 4: like the pinnacle really Most of the movies don't quite
- 21:37Speaker 4: get that high on the favorites list.
- 21:41Speaker 1: I've got a lot of specific favorites for Christmas movies.
- 21:44Speaker 1: As a kid, I grew up on a lot of
- 21:46Speaker 1: the animated fairs. If you come at me with Grinch
- 21:50Speaker 1: Stole Christmas, Charlie Brown Christmas, Garfield Christmas, I'm totally down.
- 21:55Speaker 1: I know you all recently had a discussion on some
- 21:57Speaker 1: of the Garfield holiday episodes.
- 21:59Speaker 2: Mostly Thanksgiving. Mostly Thanksgiving. Which is weird.
- 22:01Speaker 1: The Christmas one is very sad, too, for children's. Because
- 22:05Speaker 1: basically there's a portion where Garfield's sitting on Grandma's lap
- 22:10Speaker 1: and Grandma's reminiscing about Grandpa. You know, he's passed on.
- 22:13Speaker 1: She's missing him on the holidays. And so she's just
- 22:15Speaker 1: talking about, you know, we're going to admit it. And
- 22:17Speaker 1: it's just like, it's really deep and touching.
- 22:19Speaker 2: But it's like, man, this is kind of like... Man,
- 22:21Speaker 2: that's like 80s era.
- 22:23Speaker 4: So 80s era kids stuff was not really dumbed down
- 22:26Speaker 4: for kids or softened up in the blow of the
- 22:30Speaker 4: emotional impact of what's being thrown at you sometimes. Like
- 22:33Speaker 4: everything that was popular with kids in the 80s, now
- 22:37Speaker 4: you look at it and.
- 22:37Speaker 2: You're like, oh God, why were we okay with this? But...
- 22:41Speaker 2: But yeah, I can see that, yeah.
- 22:45Speaker 1: But I'm also a big fan of a lot of
- 22:47Speaker 1: the Christmas movies that are traditional. These are, according to Hoyle,
- 22:51Speaker 1: Christmas movies, but they are somewhat forgotten. They are lost
- 22:54Speaker 1: in the shuffle of the popularity contest.
- 22:57Speaker 2: I mean, really, it only kicked... Well, okay, there's been
- 23:00Speaker 2: a couple of modes.
- 23:01Speaker 4: There was the normal stuff, because Christmas movies have been
- 23:06Speaker 4: around forever. You go back to... early miracle on 34th
- 23:10Speaker 4: street and it's a wonderful life. And like all these
- 23:12Speaker 4: older movies that get lumped in as Christmas.
- 23:15Speaker 2: Movies, Bishop's wife, Bishop's wife. Yeah. Any of the Scrooge,
- 23:19Speaker 2: there's 14 versions of Scrooge. St. Louis and all of these. Yeah.
- 23:23Speaker 2: Shop around the corner. Like all of these, like there's
- 23:25Speaker 2: plenty of old school movies.
- 23:27Speaker 4: So there was that, but they were like a handful,
- 23:29Speaker 4: you know, it was like once a year you try
- 23:31Speaker 4: to watch that, you know, especially early days, but when
- 23:35Speaker 4: it came on TV, cause there was no other way
- 23:36Speaker 4: to watch it.
- 23:37Speaker 2: Yeah. Then I feel like there was a shift when
- 23:40Speaker 2: you hit probably....
- 23:43Speaker 4: I mean, cable changed it a little, but I feel
- 23:46Speaker 4: like the cable channels, once you got out of worrying
- 23:50Speaker 4: about Showtime and Movie Channel and stuff like that, because
- 23:53Speaker 4: they still just played them every once in a while,
- 23:54Speaker 4: but once you get to the TBS level, when they
- 23:57Speaker 4: were like, okay, we bought this movie, we're going.
- 23:59Speaker 2: To play it for 24 hours straight. Yeah. And then
- 24:02Speaker 2: a different channel went, well, we bought this movie.
- 24:05Speaker 1: We're going to.
- 24:05Speaker 2: Play it for 24 hours straight.
- 24:07Speaker 4: And like, so they picked like 10 different movies that
- 24:11Speaker 4: each sort of network got on board with, it feels like.
- 24:13Speaker 4: And it's like those became the holiday classics for this
- 24:17Speaker 4: somewhat modern era. And like those just got played to
- 24:21Speaker 4: death and then everybody knew them.
- 24:22Speaker 2: So you're going to have a Christmas story.
- 24:24Speaker 4: And then you're, well, Christmas Vacation was the other channel
- 24:28Speaker 4: that they started playing at 24 hours a day.
- 24:29Speaker 2: Sure, yep.
- 24:30Speaker 4: But even stuff like Elf very quickly went from being
- 24:33Speaker 4: a new recent movie to one that people.
- 24:37Speaker 2: throw out there as, like, their go-to Christmas movie. Yeah.
- 24:40Speaker 2: So that was a quick turnaround for that one.
- 24:42Speaker 1: That's definitely, like, Elf is definitely when people's, like, that's
- 24:45Speaker 1: their all-time Christmas movie. That's definitely, like, an age range there, too.
- 24:48Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 24:48Speaker 1: Like, you know, if you're, like, a 90s kid.
- 24:50Speaker 2: Because it's so recent.
- 24:51Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah.
- 24:51Speaker 2: Exactly, yeah.
- 24:52Speaker 1: But, I mean, honestly, too, like, I would lump that in.
- 24:55Speaker 1: I mean, Elf is a favorite of mine.
- 24:56Speaker 2: Elf is a good movie. Yeah.
- 24:57Speaker 4: And more so, I think it caught people by surprise.
- 24:59Speaker 4: I think that's why we had, like, a year or
- 25:01Speaker 4: two before it really caught on, because people were just like, hey,
- 25:05Speaker 4: you know what is a good movie?
- 25:06Speaker 6: Like.
- 25:07Speaker 2: I think it just.
- 25:08Speaker 4: Seemed like another dumb Christmas movie, and Will Ferrell had
- 25:10Speaker 4: been in a lot of movies at that point, so, like,
- 25:12Speaker 4: some of them were good, some of them were not quite.
- 25:14Speaker 2: As good as the others. So, like, I feel like
- 25:17Speaker 2: people were just caught off guard by, like.
- 25:19Speaker 1: You know what?
- 25:19Speaker 4: This is actually, like, a really good movie and works
- 25:22Speaker 4: as a Christmas movie.
- 25:23Speaker 6: Right, yeah.
- 25:23Speaker 4: So I think that took maybe just a year or two,
- 25:26Speaker 4: and then suddenly it was like, oh, my God, everybody's favorite.
- 25:28Speaker 2: Movie is Elf. So there's, like, those set movies. Scrooge
- 25:33Speaker 2: does another one that, like.
- 25:34Speaker 4: wasn't beloved when it came out it did okay people
- 25:38Speaker 4: liked it but like as time went on and people
- 25:40Speaker 4: watched it on cable and then networks got a hold
- 25:43Speaker 4: of it and i think it's another one that gets
- 25:44Speaker 4: played a lot around the holidays like.
- 25:47Speaker 1: And scrooge used to there was a period where like
- 25:49Speaker 1: scrooge was kind of forgotten but basically i think it's
- 25:52Speaker 1: because all these like 80s kids got i grew up
- 25:54Speaker 1: or like hey this is a bill murray christmas movie
- 25:56Speaker 1: and it's good.
- 25:57Speaker 4: And people genuinely have like weird feelings about bill murray
- 26:01Speaker 4: like it's not like a normal celebrity like people are
- 26:05Speaker 4: endeared to Bill Murray in a way that is beyond
- 26:08Speaker 4: normal fandom.
- 26:09Speaker 1: Yeah, it's kind of like the Keanu Reeves level, too,
- 26:12Speaker 1: where it's like he's almost like a holy figure.
- 26:14Speaker 2: Yeah, it's just attachment to him. And that, I think,
- 26:17Speaker 2: is what comes through.
- 26:18Speaker 4: Because Scrooge has weird off moments, but by the end,
- 26:22Speaker 4: Bill Murray.
- 26:23Speaker 2: Is so heartfelt.
- 26:24Speaker 4: And that's what sells that movie, is that final scene
- 26:27Speaker 4: with him, you're just like, if it weren't Bill Murray,
- 26:30Speaker 4: this wouldn't work.
- 26:31Speaker 2: If you switched it up and that movie went to
- 26:33Speaker 2: Chevy Chase at the time, No way in hell. It
- 26:36Speaker 2: would have fallen flat.
- 26:37Speaker 4: You can't make that work without somebody that's that endearing.
- 26:41Speaker 4: No offense, but Chevy Chase is not that endearing.
- 26:43Speaker 2: He works as Clark Griswold in goofy stuff.
- 26:46Speaker 1: You've got to have the one endearing scene.
- 26:48Speaker 4: There's a little heart to Clark Griswold, but he's busy
- 26:52Speaker 4: doing his Pratt Falls and doing his silly stuff. That's there,
- 26:57Speaker 4: but it doesn't overwhelm the story. Bill Murray being a
- 27:01Speaker 4: bastard and then finding his heart is like, Yeah, it
- 27:05Speaker 4: comes together so well.
- 27:06Speaker 2: So I feel like there's those movies.
- 27:08Speaker 4: There were those handful of movies that got bought up
- 27:10Speaker 4: and then played to death from like the 90s on
- 27:14Speaker 4: that have become like the modern day classics now.
- 27:18Speaker 2: And then there was a shift in the last six
- 27:22Speaker 2: to eight years that like the entire....
- 27:26Speaker 4: Industry changed really when you get to and i don't
- 27:30Speaker 4: know what the real kickoff was but i feel like
- 27:32Speaker 4: it was in the span of this show so in
- 27:33Speaker 4: the last 10 years plus everything changed and there became
- 27:38Speaker 4: a whole new industry of holiday movies right when you
- 27:41Speaker 4: get to hallmark and lifetime and now netflix has done
- 27:46Speaker 4: a ton of them they're kind of of that same
- 27:48Speaker 4: ilk and like It is just a different world now.
- 27:52Speaker 4: There are so many there that I don't know how... Like,
- 27:56Speaker 4: I almost, for the last several years, have wanted to
- 27:59Speaker 4: just devote... Like, I feel like you can't even devote
- 28:01Speaker 4: December to it. Like, you almost need a full-time show
- 28:04Speaker 4: to just go over all of these freaking movies because
- 28:07Speaker 4: it's out of control.
- 28:08Speaker 2: There's so many. And it's kind of a joke because
- 28:11Speaker 2: they're all sort of the same. No offense, but.
- 28:16Speaker 1: And see, where are the Martin Scorseses and Ridley Scotts
- 28:19Speaker 1: complaining about Christmas movies on Lifetime and Hallmark?
- 28:22Speaker 2: They want to bitch about superhero movies every chance they get.
- 28:25Speaker 1: These are networks that are pulling out 47 of the
- 28:29Speaker 1: same damn movie. You just swap the white people out,
- 28:34Speaker 1: because we also know these are completely devoid of any diversity.
- 28:37Speaker 4: I mean, that's the funny thing is going online and
- 28:38Speaker 4: seeing the little things that will pop up and be like, okay,
- 28:42Speaker 4: look at these 28 posters for movies. And it's all
- 28:45Speaker 4: white couples standing in front of a Christmas tree. White
- 28:47Speaker 4: couple in their small town standing in front of a
- 28:49Speaker 4: Christmas tree. Here they are in the front yard standing
- 28:52Speaker 4: in front of a Christmas tree. It's the exact same
- 28:53Speaker 4: thing over and over and over again.
- 28:55Speaker 1: I mean, it's always there's some woman who can't find
- 28:58Speaker 1: a man, but she's independent and she just needs a man.
- 29:01Speaker 1: It's like, what kind of signal are we sending here?
- 29:03Speaker 1: Is she independent or does she need a man? This dude, like,
- 29:06Speaker 1: she needs oxygen.
- 29:08Speaker 4: Well, and I've said this in a previous year. I remember, like,
- 29:11Speaker 4: there's also, like, the small town aspect. Like, they're usually from.
- 29:14Speaker 1: New York City.
- 29:15Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 29:15Speaker 4: And then they get sucked away to some quaint little
- 29:18Speaker 4: town that, like, normally I'd make fun.
- 29:20Speaker 2: Of these idiots.
- 29:21Speaker 4: But they're so wholesome here. And they just enjoy Christmas
- 29:25Speaker 4: so much. And that's where I'm going to find love.
- 29:27Speaker 2: And I'm just like.
- 29:29Speaker 4: But I made the joke that there's now a town
- 29:31Speaker 4: somewhere that they just because they shoot so many of
- 29:33Speaker 4: these damn movies that just exist like the old West
- 29:36Speaker 4: towns in old Hollywood that were just like every week
- 29:38Speaker 4: it'd be a new town for a different. movie they
- 29:40Speaker 4: were shooting.
- 29:41Speaker 2: Now it's the same thing.
- 29:42Speaker 4: They're shooting so many of these holiday movies that it's like,
- 29:44Speaker 4: somewhere there's gotta be a small town where.
- 29:46Speaker 1: Gallenberg must be thrilled.
- 29:48Speaker 4: Yeah, it's like, there's gotta be like, okay, this time
- 29:50Speaker 4: we're shooting at the bakery and then tomorrow we're gonna
- 29:52Speaker 4: shoot over at the movie theater and like, it's just
- 29:54Speaker 4: this one street and a half that they can shoot
- 29:56Speaker 4: all these couples together. Of two white people standing in
- 29:59Speaker 4: front of a Christmas tree somewhere where they have to
- 30:00Speaker 4: see all these scenes.
- 30:02Speaker 2: And it's exhausting.
- 30:04Speaker 1: And I think it was a few years ago. I
- 30:05Speaker 1: don't know if any of these were Christmas movies or not.
- 30:08Speaker 1: But I think Hallmark was here in Louisville shooting locations
- 30:11Speaker 1: and shooting some stuff. And, like, I think they shot, like,
- 30:14Speaker 1: scenes worth of, like, 20 films.
- 30:16Speaker 2: Sounds about right.
- 30:17Speaker 1: Of course, they weren't. About Louisville. They just needed a
- 30:22Speaker 1: place to shoot that had low tax rates, and I
- 30:25Speaker 1: guess Louisville, Kentucky.
- 30:26Speaker 4: At one point we had that, then we changed our
- 30:29Speaker 4: laws again and messed everything up.
- 30:30Speaker 2: Yeah, Hallmark hadn't been back yet.
- 30:33Speaker 1: But apparently the scuttlebutt over this recent Thanksgiving Black Friday
- 30:37Speaker 1: weekend was that Johnny Depp was in town.
- 30:40Speaker 2: I mean, he used to claim Kentucky. I don't think
- 30:43Speaker 2: he does anymore, but... Technically, he came from here. There
- 30:47Speaker 2: is footage of him shopping at some local shop. We
- 30:49Speaker 2: don't claim him anymore because now we all know he's
- 30:52Speaker 2: kind of an asshole. Yeah, and that's kind of a
- 30:55Speaker 2: weird thing, too.
- 30:55Speaker 1: Somebody asked me about this. The whole case with he
- 30:57Speaker 1: and the ex-wife stuff, I have to say, yes, that's
- 31:00Speaker 1: still going on. And it's really difficult which side you
- 31:04Speaker 1: want to be on because they both look like horrible people.
- 31:07Speaker 2: I don't think either come out good. They really don't.
- 31:09Speaker 2: She's also kind of a jerk in that story. So
- 31:11Speaker 2: I'm just like, I don't know. maybe you two just
- 31:13Speaker 2: stay the hell away from each other. How about that?
- 31:15Speaker 2: I was like, can we put you on separate islands?
- 31:18Speaker 4: But that makes sense because I know, um, as a
- 31:22Speaker 4: tie into previous episode, when we talked to Sam Irving
- 31:25Speaker 4: years ago, that became like a second career for him.
- 31:29Speaker 4: Like he's done tons of horror growing up, but like
- 31:32Speaker 4: that just became a business that opened up and like
- 31:35Speaker 4: he directed a.
- 31:36Speaker 2: Ton of those Christmas movies.
- 31:38Speaker 4: And like, he's just like, that's what pays my bills now.
- 31:41Speaker 4: It's like, and, and, Once he came here, I think
- 31:44Speaker 4: he met people that were in the industry working out
- 31:46Speaker 4: of this small town that we are.
- 31:48Speaker 2: And I think that's why six months later he was
- 31:51Speaker 2: back shooting a bunch of that stuff. So I think
- 31:53Speaker 2: he was involved in some of that stuff they were
- 31:55Speaker 2: shooting here. Crazy.
- 31:56Speaker 4: But yeah, it is an insane system that has been
- 32:00Speaker 4: put into motion. And it's overwhelming. Again, as much as
- 32:05Speaker 4: people talk about the dumbing down of Hollywood movies... I
- 32:09Speaker 4: think it's Lifetime.
- 32:10Speaker 2: No, maybe Hallmark. One of the two. I think it's Hallmark, actually.
- 32:14Speaker 4: They do their unveiling of their big Christmas whatever, and
- 32:18Speaker 4: they do their countdown to Christmas.
- 32:20Speaker 2: It's kind of both. Every day, they release a new...
- 32:23Speaker 2: They don't just play an old one.
- 32:25Speaker 4: They release a new Christmas movie for 25 days straight.
- 32:30Speaker 2: I'm like, that's ridiculous. Can you imagine, in general, having
- 32:36Speaker 2: to make 25 movies?
- 32:37Speaker 4: Let alone in the span of your lifetime, let alone
- 32:40Speaker 4: to be ready. Now, granted, it's not all the same director,
- 32:43Speaker 4: but the studio, the people involved in.
- 32:45Speaker 2: Running this company, have to get 25 movies ready this year.
- 32:49Speaker 2: They may have.
- 32:49Speaker 1: 10 directors, but there may be two editors.
- 32:53Speaker 4: It's ridiculous to think of putting out that number of films.
- 32:58Speaker 2: I mean, it's no wonder so many of them are similar.
- 33:00Speaker 1: How the hell would you come up with an original idea?
- 33:03Speaker 1: You can't. But yeah, that being said, like I said earlier,
- 33:09Speaker 1: I really like to champion some of the quality yet
- 33:12Speaker 1: forgotten Christmas movies.
- 33:14Speaker 2: All right. One in particular, a favorite of mine, it's
- 33:18Speaker 2: a little bit of a dark comedy, but Mixed Nuts
- 33:20Speaker 2: with Steve Martin is a fine Christmas movie. I don't
- 33:25Speaker 2: even know if I saw... I remember when it came out.
- 33:29Speaker 2: I didn't see it then. I remember it coming on
- 33:30Speaker 2: cable and.
- 33:32Speaker 4: pretty sure i was just at the point i'd had
- 33:34Speaker 4: enough of adam sandler which happened pretty quick for me
- 33:37Speaker 4: i know people love him out there but yeah and
- 33:39Speaker 4: that was i'm hitting this like.
- 33:41Speaker 1: And that was real i mean he had just left
- 33:42Speaker 1: pretty early yeah like pretty early i don't think happy
- 33:45Speaker 1: gilmore like he definitely did billy madison but i don't
- 33:48Speaker 1: think happy gilmore didn't come out.
- 33:49Speaker 4: It was just right at that point which is weird
- 33:52Speaker 4: because i do love steve martin and always have like
- 33:54Speaker 4: and to this day i'm still watching and murders in
- 33:56Speaker 4: the building because steve martin's in it yeah but something
- 33:59Speaker 4: about that one just like was weird at the time.
- 34:01Speaker 2: And I was like, eh, whatever. And I just didn't
- 34:03Speaker 2: get around to it. And I don't think I've ever
- 34:05Speaker 2: watched it.
- 34:06Speaker 1: It's a, you know, it's a good, like I said,
- 34:08Speaker 1: it basically, it takes place at a suicide hotline and
- 34:12Speaker 1: they're Christmas.
- 34:13Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah.
- 34:14Speaker 1: But it's a ragtag band of misfits. Some people work
- 34:17Speaker 1: at the suicide hotline. Some are patients, some are just
- 34:20Speaker 1: weirdos off the street and whatever else. Um, but yeah, it's, it's,
- 34:25Speaker 1: it's a cute little movie and, But it's one that
- 34:27Speaker 1: never gets seen anymore. It is definitely a Christmas movie.
- 34:31Speaker 4: I definitely want to add it to the list. I
- 34:33Speaker 4: will try to overlook the silly Adam Sandler bullshit and
- 34:37Speaker 4: focus on Steve Martin being Steve Martin.
- 34:40Speaker 1: And one other. Every now and then this gets pulled out.
- 34:44Speaker 1: They put it in the playlist of holiday movies. But
- 34:46Speaker 1: 90% of the time this is forgotten. And it kind
- 34:49Speaker 1: of surprises me because, of course, we're talking superhero movies.
- 34:53Speaker 1: This was a.
- 34:55Speaker 1: Christmas movie produced by Alexander Salkin, the man who gave
- 34:59Speaker 1: us Superman. He made a man fly and wanted to
- 35:05Speaker 1: do it again in the 80s by doing the ultimate
- 35:07Speaker 1: Santa Claus Christmas movie called Santa Claus the Movie.
- 35:12Speaker 2: Yeah, that's one I remember even at the time. Seemed
- 35:16Speaker 2: like it didn't do well. No.
- 35:18Speaker 4: And I remember it being on cable and seeing bits
- 35:20Speaker 4: and pieces of it, but I'm like, because isn't that
- 35:23Speaker 4: the one with Dudley Moore?
- 35:24Speaker 1: It is.
- 35:25Speaker 2: That was another one of those. I was like, there
- 35:27Speaker 2: are great performances from him, and then he did a
- 35:29Speaker 2: lot of other stuff.
- 35:30Speaker 4: And I was like, that was right in that range of, man,
- 35:33Speaker 4: he is just taking whatever comes along these days.
- 35:35Speaker 1: It is such an uneven movie. Your Santa Claus is
- 35:39Speaker 1: a fine actor. I can't remember, David Hiddleston, the Big.
- 35:44Speaker 2: Lebowski, basically. Okay, okay. Yeah, he's good. Blazing Saddles. He's
- 35:49Speaker 2: your Santa Claus. A perfect cast.
- 35:52Speaker 1: Judy Cornwell is Mrs. Claus. British, you know, people know
- 35:55Speaker 1: from like Are You Being Served? Yeah. Or Have You
- 35:59Speaker 1: Been Served? But yeah, great BBC comedy. She was all
- 36:02Speaker 1: over that. Been in a bunch of other BBC stuff
- 36:03Speaker 1: and British films and whatnot. So it's kind of weird
- 36:06Speaker 1: too that Santa Claus married a British woman and he's not.
- 36:08Speaker 2: Anyway, yeah. He travels all over the world. I guess
- 36:10Speaker 2: he'll pick whoever the hell he wants.
- 36:13Speaker 1: And, of course, we get the whole story, like the
- 36:15Speaker 1: beginning of Santa Claus and whatever time period he came from,
- 36:19Speaker 1: and then fast-forwarding to the modern day where we are now. And, like,
- 36:24Speaker 1: John Lithgow was our villain, right? So, okay, we've seen
- 36:27Speaker 1: John Lithgow play tons of villains.
- 36:29Speaker 2: That part seems interesting, at least. But he goes for
- 36:32Speaker 2: a bit more of a comedic villain, which.
- 36:34Speaker 1: At the time, we had not seen from him.
- 36:36Speaker 2: That's true.
- 36:37Speaker 1: Fast forward ten years later, he makes a whole sitcom,
- 36:39Speaker 1: 30 Rock from the Sun, and we love him for it.
- 36:41Speaker 1: But in the 1980s.
- 36:43Speaker 2: He was still a serious actor. We weren't ready for
- 36:46Speaker 2: funny John Lithgow. We're coming off of The World According
- 36:49Speaker 2: to Garp, John Lithgow. Yes. Which is not what most
- 36:52Speaker 2: people are ready for. Yeah. So, yeah.
- 36:55Speaker 1: And of course, this is also the film that introduced
- 36:57Speaker 1: me to the color puce. I did not know this
- 37:00Speaker 1: color existed, but there you go.
- 37:01Speaker 2: I know the term. I rarely use it. And then
- 37:07Speaker 2: I have to pin down what color I think it is.
- 37:09Speaker 2: So I'll just find the Crayola box. It's a pinkish, reddish.
- 37:12Speaker 2: That's where I was leaning, yeah. It's somewhere in between
- 37:14Speaker 2: the pink and.
- 37:15Speaker 1: Red and purple area, but For some reason, I like
- 37:19Speaker 1: to come up with odd references that no one will
- 37:21Speaker 1: get that only I think is funny. So I bring
- 37:23Speaker 1: up puce on every now and then. And I'm giggling
- 37:25Speaker 1: on the inside and no one knows why.
- 37:26Speaker 4: Well, you're always waiting for that one person.
- 37:29Speaker 2: Like the other person in the room that goes, ha ha!
- 37:32Speaker 2: And you're like, that guy!
- 37:33Speaker 1: That guy's my best friend there.
- 37:35Speaker 2: Yep, that's what we're all waiting for.
- 37:37Speaker 4: I make so many references that, again, maybe one other
- 37:41Speaker 4: person in the world I know of will get.
- 37:43Speaker 2: And they're not there. So I'm just doing it for
- 37:45Speaker 2: the hell of it at that point. And yeah, that's
- 37:47Speaker 2: most of my life.
- 37:48Speaker 1: But yeah, I mean, I remember seeing this as a
- 37:50Speaker 1: kid in the theaters, which was, you know, again, unusual.
- 37:53Speaker 2: But yeah, I mean, this should have had everything going.
- 37:56Speaker 1: I mean, it had this giant epic song at the
- 37:58Speaker 1: end by Sheena East and it's Christmas all over the world.
- 38:01Speaker 2: And yeah. I do like me some Sheena East.
- 38:03Speaker 1: I mean, it's... It's a lovely and slightly dramatic song, but.
- 38:08Speaker 2: It was a big push, though. I remember at the time, like,
- 38:11Speaker 2: there were tons of ads. I feel like it had
- 38:13Speaker 2: TV commercials. It had print ads when they still did
- 38:16Speaker 2: that sort of thing.
- 38:17Speaker 4: Like, it had a big push that Christmas.
- 38:19Speaker 2: Yeah. I feel like it didn't work even that Christmas.
- 38:27Speaker 4: I don't have tons of, like... Again, most of my
- 38:29Speaker 4: go-tos are ones that everybody's seen.
- 38:31Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 38:32Speaker 2: And then the other ones are the.
- 38:33Speaker 4: Alternative Christmas movies that people just want to argue about
- 38:37Speaker 4: all the time.
- 38:37Speaker 2: Cause like, I'll be the one that's like, yeah, Batman
- 38:40Speaker 2: Returns is a Christmas movie. Shut up. I don't care. Like,
- 38:42Speaker 2: you know, it's like, that's the kind, I like the
- 38:44Speaker 2: weird stuff that like, obviously Burton goes, cause like Edward
- 38:48Speaker 2: Scissorhands is a Christmas movie.
- 38:50Speaker 4: It's like, that's the kind of stuff I think about
- 38:52Speaker 4: because it's the stuff.
- 38:54Speaker 2: That I like anyway.
- 38:55Speaker 4: And I'm like, oh, and it's also kind of taking
- 38:57Speaker 4: place around Christmas. It's like, those kind are ones that
- 39:00Speaker 4: I think of as like my, alternate christmas movies that
- 39:04Speaker 4: aren't like your mainstream a christmas story that i can
- 39:06Speaker 4: like recite at this point so and.
- 39:08Speaker 1: Of course you know die hard's become the popularity lexicon
- 39:11Speaker 1: now that it's officially christmas.
- 39:13Speaker 4: Movie now i will get back to that it ties
- 39:16Speaker 4: in heavily to one of my um movies that i
- 39:20Speaker 4: watched this year sure.
- 39:21Speaker 1: But i mean if you want to go other you
- 39:23Speaker 1: know are they a christmas movie or not i mean
- 39:25Speaker 1: you could also go the first lethal weapon.
- 39:28Speaker 4: I've always said that well that's Shane Black. He just
- 39:30Speaker 4: likes setting everything in Christmas.
- 39:32Speaker 2: He does.
- 39:33Speaker 1: The First Gremlins, definitely.
- 39:35Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 39:36Speaker 4: I mean, that one we did and it was like
- 39:38Speaker 4: the first year when we started and it was like
- 39:41Speaker 4: we started right around Christmas.
- 39:42Speaker 2: So I'm like, well, let's just watch Gremlins and kick
- 39:44Speaker 2: this off.
- 39:45Speaker 4: So yeah, that was our first Christmas movie in this
- 39:48Speaker 4: Wonderful show that is now being forced upon you.
- 39:52Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 39:53Speaker 1: One that is a great comedy, but no one talks
- 39:56Speaker 1: about it being a Christmas movie, Trading Places.
- 39:58Speaker 2: Definitely a Christmas movie.
- 39:59Speaker 1: It kind of covers Christmas and New.
- 40:01Speaker 2: Year's, actually. Yeah, it wraps up at New Year's. Yeah.
- 40:04Speaker 1: Another one that kind of, you know, it's an 80s
- 40:08Speaker 1: film that's warmed my heart. It wasn't a very popular one,
- 40:11Speaker 1: but Cobra, the Sylvester Stallone movie. Takes place on Christmas.
- 40:15Speaker 2: Lots of decorations. I love Cobra. I'm not saying it's
- 40:18Speaker 2: a good movie, but I love Gumball.
- 40:20Speaker 1: Yeah, we see a retro Toys R Us commercial. That's
- 40:24Speaker 1: always one of the warmest parts.
- 40:25Speaker 2: Of that movie. He's sitting there like.
- 40:27Speaker 1: It's really where he's got all his gun cleaning materials
- 40:30Speaker 1: in the refrigerator, which you wouldn't want to put your
- 40:33Speaker 1: oil in the fridge, folks.
- 40:34Speaker 6: I don't know.
- 40:35Speaker 1: Many gun owners can tell you that.
- 40:36Speaker 4: When you go to get your old pizza that's been
- 40:38Speaker 4: sitting there for days and looks like cardboard, you also
- 40:41Speaker 4: want to be able to get your gun cleaning stuff.
- 40:43Speaker 2: I mean, it's just one stop.
- 40:45Speaker 1: And he slices the... the tip of the pizza off
- 40:48Speaker 1: with a pair of scissors and eats the remaining....
- 40:51Speaker 2: Why? I don't know. That's not.
- 40:53Speaker 4: Like I said, there's a lot of weird shit going
- 40:55Speaker 4: on in that movie, but it's.
- 40:58Speaker 2: Like the most quintessential... Dumb Stallone. Yeah.
- 41:02Speaker 4: Because everything about it is perfect in its own dumb way.
- 41:06Speaker 4: That poster is the greatest thing.
- 41:10Speaker 2: Absolutely. I had, for so many years, that poster hanging
- 41:13Speaker 2: on my wall. Because it's just perfect Stallone in his
- 41:17Speaker 2: most ridiculous, dumb, look, I'm a badass.
- 41:20Speaker 4: It's like everything about it. The gun sticking out of
- 41:23Speaker 4: his belt and the match in his mouth.
- 41:25Speaker 2: He's the coolest badass possible. But yet, isn't this a
- 41:29Speaker 2: little silly?
- 41:30Speaker 1: And fun Easter egg there about the Cobra poster. So,
- 41:34Speaker 1: fast forward, you know, ten so years later for the
- 41:37Speaker 1: Schwarzenegger Last Action Hero movie. And they're in the blockbuster
- 41:41Speaker 1: video and they see the standee of Terminator 2 and
- 41:43Speaker 1: there's Stallone.
- 41:43Speaker 2: On the bike.
- 41:44Speaker 1: The image of Stallone they used for that was from
- 41:47Speaker 1: the Cobra promotional stuff.
- 41:48Speaker 4: Again, I don't think Last Action Hero gets the.
- 41:51Speaker 2: credit that it deserves. It is way ahead of the
- 41:53Speaker 2: curve in what it was trying to do.
- 41:56Speaker 1: So meta.
- 41:56Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 41:57Speaker 2: Way before anybody got that kind of stuff. So yeah.
- 42:00Speaker 1: I wholeheartedly appreciate anyone who appreciates that movie, not just
- 42:04Speaker 1: for the entertainment value of it, but because of the meta.
- 42:07Speaker 4: Because it was smart in a way that people didn't
- 42:10Speaker 4: even realize, you know, it was like, it was doing
- 42:13Speaker 4: things that were sort of above the public consciousness at
- 42:16Speaker 4: that point.
- 42:16Speaker 2: Like, yeah, it's, It's an interesting movie. Again, not even
- 42:21Speaker 2: a perfect movie, but what it's doing is so smart
- 42:24Speaker 2: that like... so ahead.
- 42:25Speaker 1: Of the game so self-depreciating and the funny thing too
- 42:29Speaker 1: is like it's got like the overt rock score or
- 42:31Speaker 1: something like that but it also is a quality soundtrack
- 42:35Speaker 1: i have that soundtrack i do too like they picked
- 42:37Speaker 1: good bands and they offered good songs you know so
- 42:40Speaker 1: it's like it's not a crappy soundtrack by any means.
- 42:42Speaker 4: But still it's like it's a it's another one of
- 42:44Speaker 4: those it was a huge push that year it was
- 42:46Speaker 4: the next big schwarzenegger movie and they expected it to
- 42:48Speaker 4: do like the rest of them and like People did
- 42:51Speaker 4: not get it at the time.
- 42:52Speaker 2: Dude, I saw that in theater twice. I went and
- 42:55Speaker 2: saw it.
- 42:55Speaker 3: I remember.
- 42:55Speaker 1: Yeah, I loved it.
- 42:56Speaker 2: And thought it was great.
- 42:57Speaker 4: But, like, yeah, it's funny that they just expected that
- 43:00Speaker 4: to be the next big Schwarzenegger hit.
- 43:02Speaker 2: And, like, on paper, it should be. It's Schwarzenegger. It's
- 43:05Speaker 2: got this great villain. It's got all these great action scenes.
- 43:08Speaker 4: Just you add that one little aspect that's, like, a
- 43:10Speaker 4: little smarter than what people are looking for, and they're
- 43:13Speaker 4: just like, this movie's dumb.
- 43:14Speaker 2: I don't like it.
- 43:15Speaker 1: It's like, oh, wait, it's funny? Oh, and it's making
- 43:16Speaker 1: fun of itself?
- 43:17Speaker 2: What?
- 43:17Speaker 4: Mm-hmm. It steps out of the bonds of a normal
- 43:21Speaker 4: action movie to make fun of action movies?
- 43:22Speaker 2: No thank you.
- 43:24Speaker 1: It's so crazy how little it takes to shake America's
- 43:30Speaker 1: composure when it comes to a film. Basically, just a
- 43:33Speaker 1: little thing can just take you out of it.
- 43:35Speaker 2: Really? Suck it up, Buttercup. Come on.
- 43:39Speaker 4: That's what I say about a lot of standard movie goers.
- 43:43Speaker 4: Anything that gets a little too weird It doesn't take
- 43:46Speaker 4: much to weird out the normal people of the world.
- 43:48Speaker 4: And like regular stuff that they're used to, which maybe
- 43:51Speaker 4: we'll get back to that later. But regular stuff that
- 43:54Speaker 4: they're used to, they're all in.
- 43:56Speaker 2: Even if it's repetitive and unimaginative. But you go just
- 43:59Speaker 2: a little too far outside of what they're comfortable with
- 44:02Speaker 2: and the whole movie's gone in their mind. They're just like, nope,
- 44:04Speaker 2: I'm done with this.
- 44:06Speaker 1: And transitioning from that ridiculousness. into something that is completely
- 44:13Speaker 1: 100% full-bore ridiculous involving the same star, the all-time holiday classic,
- 44:21Speaker 1: Jingle All The Way.
- 44:22Speaker 2: Come on, people. This is a good one here. Schwarzenegger again. Schwarzenegger,
- 44:30Speaker 2: Phil Hartman, Sinbad folks here. Come on. How could this
- 44:35Speaker 2: not be great?
- 44:36Speaker 4: It still seems like it missed the mark initially. It
- 44:39Speaker 4: found its fan base as years went on.
- 44:42Speaker 2: It sure did, yeah. But it didn't really seem like
- 44:44Speaker 2: it was the big hit that they were hoping for
- 44:46Speaker 2: that year. But eventually, again, I think that was one
- 44:49Speaker 2: on cable everybody eventually watched.
- 44:51Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 44:52Speaker 4: And then started making their references and their superhero, I've
- 44:55Speaker 4: got to go find that toy.
- 44:56Speaker 2: And then they're like, okay, well, there were things that
- 44:58Speaker 2: were kind of good about that.
- 45:00Speaker 4: So, yeah, I think that took a little while.
- 45:02Speaker 1: And if you're a Conan O'Brien fan, he loves this
- 45:04Speaker 1: movie and constantly references it during the holidays. So it just,
- 45:08Speaker 1: you know, I'm a Conan fan since high school. So
- 45:10Speaker 1: it just kind of just seeped into, you know, my thing. But, yeah,
- 45:15Speaker 1: it is completely ridiculous, but so fun.
- 45:18Speaker 2: Are you a big enough fan to have gone on...
- 45:21Speaker 2: Full in for the sequel? Because I don't think I
- 45:25Speaker 2: realized there was a sequel until recently. Yeah, yeah.
- 45:29Speaker 1: I am fully aware of the existence of said sequel.
- 45:34Speaker 1: But unfortunately, it stars someone.
- 45:37Speaker 2: That's my problem.
- 45:39Speaker 1: That I would rather not see anything of his. And
- 45:43Speaker 1: I refer to Mr. Larry the Cable Guy. Really, no biggie.
- 45:47Speaker 1: complete disrespect to him other than the fact that i
- 45:49Speaker 1: just want nothing to do with him yeah you know
- 45:51Speaker 1: i mean the same kind of goes for the whole
- 45:53Speaker 1: you know redneck comedy guys like it just y'all y'all
- 45:55Speaker 1: do your thing it's cool but it just it ain't
- 45:57Speaker 1: me it's.
- 45:58Speaker 4: Not for me personally it even ruins well again i
- 46:02Speaker 4: the lesser of those pixar movies but like mater just
- 46:06Speaker 4: drags the whole movie down i'm like i never really
- 46:09Speaker 4: got into cars anyway but then every time i'm like
- 46:12Speaker 4: oh yeah that's why Every time I'm like, all right, McQueen,
- 46:15Speaker 4: that's a good.
- 46:16Speaker 2: Yeah, no, wait, never mind. Here comes Mater again.
- 46:19Speaker 1: But you want to, searching around, watching some odd Christmas
- 46:23Speaker 1: movies last night, one sequel that has nothing to do
- 46:28Speaker 1: with the Christmas movie, a sequel that I was shocked existed,
- 46:31Speaker 1: and again, this was a why question. When I'm searching around,
- 46:36Speaker 1: I see the jingle all the way. It's like, oh yeah,
- 46:37Speaker 1: I forgot that was there too. Do you know that
- 46:40Speaker 1: there is a Cop and a Half sequel? And a
- 46:44Speaker 1: cop and a half of this is the Burt Reynolds
- 46:46Speaker 1: little child comedy.
- 46:48Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah. There's a sequel. You know who's the star
- 46:52Speaker 2: of the sequel? I don't know that I do. Lou
- 46:54Speaker 2: Diamond Phillips. I'm trying to process right now.
- 47:00Speaker 1: Because nothing says comedy like the acting stylings of Lou
- 47:04Speaker 1: Diamond Phillips.
- 47:04Speaker 2: And the thing is, Lou Diamond Phillips is legitimately a
- 47:07Speaker 2: good actor.
- 47:08Speaker 4: He is. But comedy is not really what he's known for.
- 47:12Speaker 1: I think maybe he's been in some comedies. He plays
- 47:16Speaker 1: a little funny scene. Usually he's an intense kind of guy.
- 47:19Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 47:21Speaker 1: You know, like, what was it? Was it Community he
- 47:23Speaker 1: was on?
- 47:24Speaker 2: There was a show he kept reoccurring on.
- 47:26Speaker 1: Yeah, I think so.
- 47:27Speaker 2: But basically he was an intense guy on the show.
- 47:29Speaker 2: He wasn't a funny guy.
- 47:31Speaker 4: Yeah, which that's the way to play him, basically, because
- 47:34Speaker 4: he does that so well.
- 47:36Speaker 1: Yeah, but no, this is a full-on... I mean, there's
- 47:38Speaker 1: like the shot of him. I think it was like
- 47:41Speaker 1: a still from the movie. It was like a shot
- 47:43Speaker 1: of him all bug-eyed and just looking like somebody stole
- 47:46Speaker 1: his lunch and kicked him in the junk at the
- 47:47Speaker 1: same time.
- 47:48Speaker 2: While we're doing... Things that have sequels that you don't realize. Like,
- 47:53Speaker 2: I feel like we need to come back.
- 47:55Speaker 4: Like, maybe, and if you're sucker enough, because normally I
- 47:58Speaker 4: couldn't find anybody that would be on board for this
- 48:00Speaker 4: kind of nonsense. But, like, I almost feel like we
- 48:03Speaker 4: need to, in future Christmases, just pick the weird sequels too. Like,
- 48:10Speaker 4: the fact that they made another Christmas story.
- 48:13Speaker 3: Yes.
- 48:14Speaker 4: That I know very few people who've seen. I've watched
- 48:18Speaker 4: scenes from it. I haven't sat and watched it in
- 48:20Speaker 4: its entirety. I feel like that's an episode.
- 48:22Speaker 2: Waiting to happen.
- 48:23Speaker 4: There's also, I feel like, two offshoot Christmas Vacation. There's
- 48:30Speaker 4: definitely a Christmas Vacation that follows Eddie.
- 48:34Speaker 1: There's two movies that follow that.
- 48:35Speaker 2: See, I thought there were two. Okay.
- 48:36Speaker 1: I think they're made for TV as well.
- 48:38Speaker 2: I feel like, yeah, there's some weird.
- 48:41Speaker 1: This is the pre-Breakdown Randy Quaid.
- 48:44Speaker 2: Yeah, before he was.
- 48:45Speaker 4: Well, I mean, I feel like he's always been insane,
- 48:47Speaker 4: but there's a different level that kicked in in recent years.
- 48:50Speaker 2: So, yeah, right before all of that, he did these things.
- 48:54Speaker 4: So, yeah, I feel like those are a whole other
- 48:56Speaker 4: series waiting to happen. So, if you're a sucker enough,
- 49:00Speaker 4: plan that for your next Christmas.
- 49:02Speaker 2: Nice.
- 49:03Speaker 1: I love weird sequels to things that shouldn't exist.
- 49:06Speaker 4: Again, only for this purpose. It's rare that I watch
- 49:09Speaker 4: one and I'm like, this is great. It's usually just
- 49:12Speaker 4: for me to sit down afterwards and go.
- 49:14Speaker 2: Wait, what the hell? Like, it's just for me breaking
- 49:18Speaker 2: it down after the fact of what? it even exists
- 49:21Speaker 2: and what the hell went wrong well it's kind of
- 49:23Speaker 2: like like home alone 3 it's like you know why
- 49:25Speaker 2: did that even exist and then now of course i
- 49:27Speaker 2: know they've made a new home alone i was sorry
- 49:29Speaker 2: to say there was another one i think this is
- 49:31Speaker 2: at least five because i think you're right yeah i
- 49:34Speaker 2: know it was like I don't know if it was
- 49:36Speaker 2: when Disney owned it then, or if it was like
- 49:38Speaker 2: ABC family still, but they made a fourth one that
- 49:41Speaker 2: was a whole different kid. And it had that. Cause
- 49:43Speaker 2: that's why the third was a whole different kid too.
- 49:45Speaker 2: Oh yeah.
- 49:46Speaker 4: The third one was a different, but it was like,
- 49:47Speaker 4: I knew that kid from other stuff. He's just sort
- 49:49Speaker 4: of familiar, but this was like out of nowhere.
- 49:52Speaker 2: And the kids are nobody like not from other things.
- 49:54Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 49:54Speaker 2: But the villain is Malcolm McDowell. And that's why I
- 49:58Speaker 2: watched it. I was like, wait, they got Malcolm McDowell
- 50:01Speaker 2: to be in this home alone. Fourth sequel. Like, I
- 50:06Speaker 2: need to watch this. And it's rough.
- 50:09Speaker 1: And see, of course, there's the new one that's on
- 50:11Speaker 1: Disney +, where I was at Home Alone again or whatever.
- 50:14Speaker 4: Home Sweet Home Alone, I think, is what I, yeah,
- 50:17Speaker 4: I looked it up and I considered it for a
- 50:20Speaker 4: half second and then went with some other options.
- 50:22Speaker 1: Well, at least this one ties in because this kid
- 50:25Speaker 1: is Buzz's son.
- 50:27Speaker 2: So the crappy older brother... First of all, Buzz should
- 50:30Speaker 2: not be reproducing.
- 50:31Speaker 1: Well, of course he's going to reproduce. All the terrible
- 50:33Speaker 1: ones do.
- 50:33Speaker 2: That's true.
- 50:34Speaker 1: So, yeah. So this is Buzz's kid that gets left behind.
- 50:37Speaker 6: Of course.
- 50:38Speaker 1: Kevin McAllister is... I know he's referenced. They talk about him,
- 50:41Speaker 1: like what happened to him, stuff like that, or what
- 50:43Speaker 1: he's up to, whatever else.
- 50:44Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 50:44Speaker 1: But it's mostly focused on Buzz's favorite. So I think
- 50:46Speaker 1: it's kind of funny that, you know, Kevin, if he
- 50:49Speaker 1: has children, there's no way in hell this is ever
- 50:52Speaker 1: going to happen to his children.
- 50:53Speaker 2: He's like handcuffed to his children. But... buzz would totally
- 50:58Speaker 2: let this shit happen to his.
- 50:59Speaker 4: Kid it's sad that there's a home alone universe now
- 51:03Speaker 4: that we have to like start making other films that.
- 51:05Speaker 1: I mean it's like the first one's good but i'm
- 51:07Speaker 1: not even that big of a fan.
- 51:08Speaker 4: I was not and i know that rubs people the
- 51:10Speaker 4: wrong way because i knew i i had someone that
- 51:14Speaker 4: i was in my life and for christmas that was
- 51:16Speaker 4: their thing and i was like if.
- 51:18Speaker 2: You want me to watch it with you i will
- 51:19Speaker 2: but thankfully she's not.
- 51:21Speaker 4: Around anymore so I don't have to pretend like I
- 51:24Speaker 4: want to watch Home Alone anymore but again it was
- 51:26Speaker 4: an age difference she was just at the point where
- 51:28Speaker 4: Home Alone was the greatest freaking thing and I was
- 51:31Speaker 4: a little older already so I was like seems like
- 51:33Speaker 4: a dumb kids movie to me when it came out
- 51:35Speaker 4: I was like this seems like a dumb kids movie
- 51:37Speaker 4: and I watched it and I was like oh this
- 51:39Speaker 4: is a dumb kids movie so I know people love
- 51:42Speaker 4: it and again I think it's a generational thing I
- 51:44Speaker 4: think if you're past the point of being a kid
- 51:47Speaker 4: it's hard to see anything but that all you do
- 51:49Speaker 4: is sit there and go who's this weird old man
- 51:52Speaker 4: next door? Like you're focusing on the other crap, but
- 51:54Speaker 4: it's like the perfect, like wish fulfillment. If you're a kid,
- 51:58Speaker 4: like I get the whole place to myself and I
- 51:59Speaker 4: can eat pizza and I can watch whatever shows I want.
- 52:02Speaker 2: And like, it's, it's all it is when you're a kid.
- 52:05Speaker 2: So it, it sort of indulges that for kids.
- 52:07Speaker 4: But once you're past the point of being a kid,
- 52:09Speaker 4: it just, you're just like, these things would have killed
- 52:12Speaker 4: those two idiots.
- 52:13Speaker 1: I mean, which is the, the whole, uh, Roadrunner versus
- 52:16Speaker 1: Wile E. Coyote aspect of the movie is what I
- 52:18Speaker 1: appreciate about the most. Because, I mean, just like, you know,
- 52:22Speaker 1: Joe Pesci taking the blowtorch to the head, like, okay,
- 52:24Speaker 1: that beanie would have been melted into his skull, and
- 52:27Speaker 1: he probably would have died of, like, a severe brain
- 52:29Speaker 1: hemorrhage because that much heat intensely.
- 52:31Speaker 2: I think.
- 52:32Speaker 4: Anything that happens to them at any point would have
- 52:34Speaker 4: killed each and every one of them.
- 52:36Speaker 2: Oh, sure, absolutely. Every step of the way.
- 52:37Speaker 1: But it's like that one in particular. It's like, there's
- 52:39Speaker 1: a few things.
- 52:40Speaker 2: Oh, you can survive this. The iron to the face.
- 52:42Speaker 2: The iron to the face.
- 52:45Speaker 1: You may have some trauma there, but it's like the
- 52:47Speaker 1: full-on blowtorch to the head.
- 52:49Speaker 2: It's like, nah, you're dead.
- 52:51Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 52:52Speaker 2: Well, I also like everybody....
- 52:54Speaker 4: There's so many things I see even not Home Alone
- 52:57Speaker 4: sequels that like sort of do that type of thing
- 53:01Speaker 4: as like home invasion type of thing. Because I've often
- 53:04Speaker 4: said like Skyfall is like the Home Alone rap. That's
- 53:09Speaker 4: almost exactly what happens there. But I will always be like, oh, wait,
- 53:14Speaker 4: if I'm going to be a nerd about it. I'm like,
- 53:15Speaker 4: technically Nightmare on Elm Street. She does that stuff well
- 53:19Speaker 4: before Home Alone. Sets up the sledgehammer booby trap.
- 53:22Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
- 53:23Speaker 4: Light bulb, like she does the whole house like trap
- 53:28Speaker 4: thing is done a couple years before Home Alone.
- 53:32Speaker 2: So I'm just saying Wes Craven wins. A sidebar though,
- 53:37Speaker 2: I will forever love the.
- 53:38Speaker 1: Behind the scenes story of the melting stairs. You know,
- 53:43Speaker 1: Nancy has to climb the stairs and like a producer,
- 53:45Speaker 1: he had to have the melting stairs effect there. He
- 53:48Speaker 1: thought that was going to be great. Wes is like, no, no,
- 53:50Speaker 1: we can't do it. It's not going to look great.
- 53:53Speaker 2: It got in the movie, and guess what, folks? It
- 53:55Speaker 2: don't look great. I mean, it's a cool idea. Like,
- 53:58Speaker 2: it is one of those things that would exist in
- 54:00Speaker 2: your dream state. Oh, absolutely.
- 54:02Speaker 4: Trying to recreate it in the real world is really
- 54:04Speaker 4: hard to do.
- 54:06Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 54:06Speaker 1: And then maybe for today's digital world, absolutely we could
- 54:09Speaker 1: do that.
- 54:09Speaker 2: But then... It would still look kind of digital.
- 54:13Speaker 1: You're stepping in some blue pudding.
- 54:14Speaker 4: Yeah, it'd still look like weird digital mess. Anyway, Nightmare
- 54:20Speaker 4: Before Christmas.
- 54:21Speaker 1: You know, I will go on a, I'm going to
- 54:25Speaker 1: do a hot take here. I'm not a Nightmare Before
- 54:28Speaker 1: Christmas fan. I have no love whatsoever for that movie.
- 54:32Speaker 2: Blasphemy.
- 54:33Speaker 1: I just, you know, I enjoy some Tim Burton stuff,
- 54:36Speaker 1: but just, I'm not a musical fan per se.
- 54:39Speaker 2: Yeah. And this is basically like.
- 54:42Speaker 1: Every goth kid that annoyed me back in the day,
- 54:45Speaker 1: this is their musical. This is their thing.
- 54:47Speaker 2: See, that's the thing. It is one of those movies
- 54:49Speaker 2: that you can almost separate. There are plenty of movies
- 54:52Speaker 2: that I'm like, I like the movie, but the fans
- 54:54Speaker 2: of the movie kind of rub me the wrong way.
- 54:57Speaker 1: Yeah, it's really the fans of the movie that did
- 55:00Speaker 1: that to me.
- 55:00Speaker 2: It has nothing to do with the film.
- 55:01Speaker 4: Because I saw it in the theater, and I thought
- 55:03Speaker 4: it was great that first time.
- 55:04Speaker 2: And then there was like 10 years when nobody gave
- 55:06Speaker 2: a shit about it.
- 55:08Speaker 4: I remember I was working at a place at the
- 55:11Speaker 4: time where we got the only run of merchandise they made.
- 55:15Speaker 4: They had so little faith in that movie they made
- 55:17Speaker 4: one batch of things and it never came back. We
- 55:20Speaker 4: never got it again. And so the handful of dorks
- 55:23Speaker 4: that liked the movie and grabbed those, those are worth
- 55:25Speaker 4: a fortune now.
- 55:26Speaker 2: But then you give it 10 years, and then Disney
- 55:29Speaker 2: comes around and is like, okay, well, maybe we were... Really,
- 55:33Speaker 2: we think we can make money off this. So they
- 55:35Speaker 2: are like, maybe we were a little... Didn't have enough
- 55:37Speaker 2: faith in this movie. So now, I mean, it is
- 55:40Speaker 2: just every Hot Topic kid's dream. And I'm sucker.
- 55:44Speaker 4: I have more Jack Skellington t-shirts than I can count
- 55:48Speaker 4: right now.
- 55:48Speaker 2: So I get it.
- 55:49Speaker 4: I am that dork to some extent, but I'm also not.
- 55:53Speaker 4: I don't want to be that level. I'm... A little
- 55:57Speaker 4: gothy dork, but I don't want to be that. I
- 55:59Speaker 4: don't want to be that annoying to other people about it.
- 56:03Speaker 4: The thing I also dislike about it, it's a movie
- 56:04Speaker 4: that hits you twice in a year.
- 56:06Speaker 6: It's true.
- 56:06Speaker 2: Because you can get a Halloween and Christmas. It's both, yeah.
- 56:08Speaker 2: It is both.
- 56:09Speaker 1: The same decoration that goes in October is the same
- 56:12Speaker 1: one that comes back in December.
- 56:13Speaker 4: That's what's funny is I saw it at Walgreens like yesterday.
- 56:18Speaker 4: And I was like, oh, this stuff should be marked down, right?
- 56:20Speaker 2: Because Halloween's over now. I was like, oh, no way.
- 56:22Speaker 2: These are Christmas decorations now. I was like. You bastards
- 56:25Speaker 2: found a way to keep this in the aisle for
- 56:27Speaker 2: like three months. It's pretty sneaky, sis.
- 56:31Speaker 1: Yeah. Now, another Christmas movie that tends to be forgotten,
- 56:36Speaker 1: and when I bring it up, people are like, oh, yeah,
- 56:38Speaker 1: I've seen it. It's a really funny movie. Just Friends
- 56:41Speaker 1: with Ryan Reynolds and Anna Faris.
- 56:43Speaker 2: It's one of those that always comes up on the lists,
- 56:46Speaker 2: and every time... That was that run, and I'm still
- 56:49Speaker 2: kind of on that run.
- 56:50Speaker 4: I don't... got away from, and I refer to them
- 56:53Speaker 4: as modern, granted that's an old movie now for most people,
- 56:56Speaker 4: but to me it still seems like something that came
- 56:59Speaker 4: out recently. But yeah, so many comedies that were big
- 57:02Speaker 4: at the time and everybody.
- 57:03Speaker 2: Else got into, I just didn't watch. I just got
- 57:06Speaker 2: out of that.
- 57:07Speaker 4: I like so many old comedies that it's so rare
- 57:10Speaker 4: that I watch something recent in my mind.
- 57:13Speaker 2: So yeah, that's one.
- 57:15Speaker 4: Of those that I just knew of and didn't get to,
- 57:18Speaker 4: and now I feel like if not for the Christmas thing,
- 57:21Speaker 4: just to kind of give it a shot as a,
- 57:23Speaker 4: as a comedy.
- 57:24Speaker 2: I feel like I should watch it, but yeah.
- 57:26Speaker 1: Well, this thing is, it's, I don't remember it being
- 57:29Speaker 1: a successful film. I think it totally came and went
- 57:32Speaker 1: because I mean, Ryan Reynolds, while he had been in
- 57:34Speaker 1: several films and sort of on a Ferris, he was
- 57:37Speaker 1: not nearly the star that he is today.
- 57:38Speaker 2: They were trying to bank on all of them.
- 57:40Speaker 4: Cause there's like four different actors and they'd all kind
- 57:43Speaker 4: of been in other things, but like nobody was huge yet.
- 57:46Speaker 4: Like neither of them had really fully crossed over. So,
- 57:50Speaker 4: I think that's why they just didn't have anybody to
- 57:51Speaker 4: hang it on. And then everybody went, eh, whatever, I'm
- 57:53Speaker 4: going to see something else.
- 57:54Speaker 2: And that's what happens.
- 57:56Speaker 1: And then to get, was it Julie from Airplane? Yeah.
- 58:00Speaker 2: I just, oh, I love her as a mom. Just, yeah.
- 58:04Speaker 1: There's so many things that she did that's like felt
- 58:06Speaker 1: very much like my mom at times. It's like, you know,
- 58:09Speaker 1: it's like she's in her own kind of little world
- 58:11Speaker 1: doing her own little thing. And it's like reality intersects
- 58:14Speaker 1: on occasion. It's like, I just loved it. But yeah,
- 58:19Speaker 1: so I'm just, Yeah, I mean, who doesn't want Anna
- 58:22Speaker 1: Faris singing the same terrible song over and over again,
- 58:24Speaker 1: thinking it's going to get better?
- 58:26Speaker 2: Anna Faris works on a specific thing, and I don't
- 58:31Speaker 2: know that she works outside of that. It's so rare
- 58:34Speaker 2: that I've seen her do anything other than what she does. Yeah.
- 58:37Speaker 2: But what she does, she's so good at. It really is, yeah.
- 58:40Speaker 2: She can nail that. Yeah.
- 58:43Speaker 1: It's a great vehicle for the both of them, frankly.
- 58:45Speaker 2: It's sad that.
- 58:47Speaker 1: I mean, it's kind of picked up a little more popularity,
- 58:49Speaker 1: but it's like it should be recognized a bit more
- 58:51Speaker 1: than what it is.
- 58:52Speaker 2: No.
- 58:53Speaker 1: But I've got like a little list of movies. Of course,
- 58:56Speaker 1: these are definitely Christmas movies, but I would put them
- 58:58Speaker 1: on the naughty list, so to speak.
- 59:00Speaker 2: All right.
- 59:02Speaker 1: Namely, of course, the Bad Santa films.
- 59:06Speaker 2: The fact that there are films. Films. Yeah, too Yeah,
- 59:10Speaker 2: I forgot about the other one. I think I watched it. Yeah,
- 59:13Speaker 2: it's bad.
- 59:14Speaker 4: But, I mean, if you don't have, like, the director
- 59:18Speaker 4: is what makes that first one. Like, it could have
- 59:20Speaker 4: easily been a terrible movie. And I think there are
- 59:23Speaker 4: people that still wrote it off as that. But, like,
- 59:25Speaker 4: if you get into it, like, it's his signature brand
- 59:28Speaker 4: of dark and like really like just no faith in
- 59:33Speaker 4: humanity whatsoever so trying to get a little like inkling
- 59:37Speaker 4: of christmas joy to come along here and there and
- 59:40Speaker 4: that movie is like what makes that first one.
- 59:42Speaker 1: Work and have billy bob in the roles is perfect too.
- 59:44Speaker 4: But but coming back and handing it to a different
- 59:46Speaker 4: director and even if you get billy bob back like
- 59:49Speaker 4: it's just not gonna work yeah.
- 59:51Speaker 1: And the kid being older kind of was weird now
- 59:54Speaker 1: yeah Because, like, when he's a little kid, you're like, okay,
- 59:57Speaker 1: he's a little kid. He's going to grow out of that.
- 59:59Speaker 1: He'll get, you know, he'll get a little cooler a
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: little later on.
- 1:00:02Speaker 2: Then, like, when you see him, it's like, oh. Nope,
- 1:00:05Speaker 2: didn't happen. What happened, man? It's like, did you get
- 1:00:08Speaker 2: hit in the head?
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: I mean, you okay?
- 1:00:10Speaker 2: Yeah, by Billy Bob Thorne. Yeah. And with no Lauren Graham,
- 1:00:13Speaker 2: you're just wasting my time. Yeah.
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: Another one, of course, this is being a very infamous film,
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: especially when it's initial release, Silent Night, Deadly Night.
- 1:00:24Speaker 4: That's one I'm penciling in down the line.
- 1:00:27Speaker 2: I feel like we need to address at least the
- 1:00:29Speaker 2: first couple of those in, like, a full episode.
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: I've only gone to one and two. I haven't gone beyond.
- 1:00:36Speaker 4: Yeah, see, those were the original kind of, like, in
- 1:00:38Speaker 4: that slasher era. And then they kept, like, going back
- 1:00:41Speaker 4: to the well as years went. Because I didn't realize
- 1:00:44Speaker 4: they were up to as many as there are.
- 1:00:45Speaker 2: And now there's a lot of them.
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: It's one of those things that I remember years ago
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: I was in a video store looking around for stuff
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: like that.
- 1:00:54Speaker 2: I'm in a video store, folks. That's how long ago
- 1:00:56Speaker 2: this was. Tell us more, Grandpa.
- 1:00:59Speaker 1: But I'm searching around the horror section and I see
- 1:01:02Speaker 1: House 4. And I'm like, wait a minute. I enjoyed
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: House 1.
- 1:01:07Speaker 2: I really enjoyed House 2. I liked 2 and didn't
- 1:01:09Speaker 2: expect to. Yeah, I really enjoyed House 2.
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: Where was House 3? I don't remember this film coming out, let.
- 1:01:15Speaker 2: Alone a fourth. Did they pull a Thanksgiving? I don't know.
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: No, it apparently exists, and so does a five. But
- 1:01:23Speaker 1: it's just kind of like, there's just these tiny films.
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: Maybe they were released in the States. Maybe they weren't.
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: And the Silent Night, Deadly Night sequels beyond, too, I
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: kind of feel were in those same categories. In what
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: country were these movies released?
- 1:01:36Speaker 2: Because it wasn't here.
- 1:01:37Speaker 4: Well, and they also, I think the first ones were like,
- 1:01:41Speaker 4: Every movie at that time, they were made for theaters
- 1:01:43Speaker 4: and then the home video market kicked in. So a
- 1:01:46Speaker 4: lot of them were then just made to be straight
- 1:01:48Speaker 4: to video.
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: And that's what they were. This movie is meant to
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: take your time.
- 1:01:53Speaker 4: This is just when you're bored on a Friday night
- 1:01:55Speaker 4: and you're picking up a pizza anyway.
- 1:01:57Speaker 2: Hey, let's get this one. And like many a movie
- 1:02:00Speaker 2: was watched that way by me and a lot of
- 1:02:02Speaker 2: other people.
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: At least it better had a cool cover.
- 1:02:06Speaker 2: That's the one thing. If you had a terrible movie,
- 1:02:08Speaker 2: if it had at least a cool cover, it's like, well,
- 1:02:10Speaker 2: that's what got me.
- 1:02:11Speaker 4: That's, I mean, yeah, that's the art form that was
- 1:02:14Speaker 4: the late 80s into the mid 90s.
- 1:02:15Speaker 2: Yeah. After that, it's all just airbrushed headshots of everybody.
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: I know. Posters are, it's very rare to get an
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: imaginative poster these days. Of course, to get a physical poster, period.
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: It's a sad thing to go to a movie theater
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: and it's like everything's on a thumb drive on a
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: TV screen now. It's like, wait, that was the glory
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: of working in a movie theater is because like the posters,
- 1:02:35Speaker 1: when we were done with them, you took those home.
- 1:02:37Speaker 4: There is a few, but at least the one I
- 1:02:41Speaker 4: go to all the time now, there's the walkway on
- 1:02:42Speaker 4: the way out has posters. But once you're in the lobby,
- 1:02:47Speaker 4: there's nothing. In the hallway going to the theaters, there's
- 1:02:51Speaker 4: usually one or two of the big giant stand-ups, but
- 1:02:54Speaker 4: they're in a hallway, so you can't really see them
- 1:02:55Speaker 4: very well.
- 1:02:56Speaker 2: Sure, yeah. And then on the way out, there's like
- 1:02:59Speaker 2: six or eight posters, and that's it.
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: I will say, thank God, at least the cardboard stand-in
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: game is still going strong. You know, the Mylar's over
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: the houses is gone. It used to be had, like,
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: Mylar's had the movie logo. You'd hang those above each house.
- 1:03:15Speaker 2: You knew which one you were in there.
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: No, now it's a digital sign now. So it's like,
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: you know, they took those and they took movie posters. Well,
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: we got the cardboard standees, though, where you definitely need
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: an engineering degree to put those together.
- 1:03:25Speaker 4: It switched to the home game for a while. Suddenly
- 1:03:28Speaker 4: everybody could get a life-size version of any celebrity in
- 1:03:31Speaker 4: their home. so that became a thing and then eventually
- 1:03:34Speaker 4: they they still realized they had giant lobbies in certain
- 1:03:37Speaker 4: theaters and they could build the most massive construction ever
- 1:03:42Speaker 4: made out of cardboard and slap it yeah so those
- 1:03:44Speaker 4: i still see there was there was like a huge
- 1:03:46Speaker 4: one for the last james bond that i saw yeah
- 1:03:49Speaker 4: and there was another one that was about that big
- 1:03:52Speaker 4: i don't even remember what it was like every once
- 1:03:53Speaker 4: in a while it's like a big studio release we'll
- 1:03:55Speaker 4: still get a massive cardboard structure.
- 1:03:58Speaker 1: Yeah, I remember when I, I think when we just
- 1:04:00Speaker 1: got to see Ghostbusters Afterlife, there was like a big
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: one for the, what's the Disney movie, Encanto? Or Encanto
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: or something like that?
- 1:04:05Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:04:06Speaker 1: Yeah, there was a big one for that. So, yeah,
- 1:04:08Speaker 1: definitely the kids' films are still representative of that.
- 1:04:10Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: But, yeah, but going back to Silent Night, Deadly Night,
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: the original definitely has its charm. A good friend of mine, Andy,
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: just celebrates this movie like no other person I've ever seen.
- 1:04:23Speaker 2: Yeah. A little too much? Are you concerned?
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: No, no, no. It's basically like he has a shirt
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: that has like a Santa face on it and it
- 1:04:30Speaker 1: just says naughty. And people are like, oh, that's kind
- 1:04:33Speaker 1: of funny. But like the few realize, no, it's referencing
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: Silent Night, Deadly Night. But I will say as sequels go,
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: as a filmmaker, for shame on the filmmakers of Silent Night,
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: Deadly Night 2. For basically making probably the laziest film
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: since The Hills Have Eyes 2, the original Hills Have
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: Eyes 2.
- 1:04:54Speaker 2: Well, now I definitely need to watch both of these
- 1:04:56Speaker 2: first two movies.
- 1:04:58Speaker 1: Because Silent Night, Deadly Night 2, over half of an
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: hour and a half film... is told in flashbacks. So
- 1:05:08Speaker 1: if you've never actually seen the original... So.
- 1:05:11Speaker 2: It's flashbacks of the first movie?
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: Yes. Wow, that is crazy.
- 1:05:15Speaker 2: Yeah, it's literally not like.
- 1:05:17Speaker 4: If it was new flashbacks they shot, that's one thing.
- 1:05:20Speaker 2: Flashbacks to the first movie? That's something else.
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: Unlike the Evil Dead films where you tend to get
- 1:05:27Speaker 1: a little bit of a recap at the beginning of them.
- 1:05:29Speaker 4: And they reshoot them so they don't even match the
- 1:05:31Speaker 4: last movie at the time.
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: This is a full-on, let's use the footage and scenes
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: from the previous film.
- 1:05:39Speaker 2: That is rough.
- 1:05:40Speaker 1: And pepper those in throughout the movie. So they're not
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: all continuous. They do intersect with new scenes. Because in
- 1:05:48Speaker 1: the second one, it's the little brother.
- 1:05:50Speaker 2: So they shot 45 minutes worth of footage and went,
- 1:05:53Speaker 2: now how do we make this feature length?
- 1:05:55Speaker 1: Oh, wait a minute.
- 1:05:56Speaker 2: Didn't we have a previous film we did? Don't we
- 1:05:57Speaker 2: have a whole bunch of footage laying around that's that
- 1:06:00Speaker 2: last movie?
- 1:06:01Speaker 1: And of course, the premise for the initial one is like, okay,
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: you got a guy. He went a little crazy. He
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: has his own designs on Christmas and what is naughty
- 1:06:10Speaker 1: and what is nice. And he wants to take out
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: the naughty ones.
- 1:06:13Speaker 2: That's a good concept, really. I can see that being
- 1:06:17Speaker 2: a reason to put together a horror movie.
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: Sure, yeah. But then the sequel is like, okay, that
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: dude's little brother saw this all go down and then
- 1:06:27Speaker 1: saw his brother in a Santa suit get gunned down
- 1:06:29Speaker 1: by the police. Spoiler alert. And then this inspires him
- 1:06:34Speaker 1: to do the same thing.
- 1:06:37Speaker 2: He's learned nothing from his brother's downfall. And I just... Yeah,
- 1:06:45Speaker 2: I'm just so.
- 1:06:46Speaker 1: Yeah, because, like, you know, The Hills Have Eyes 2,
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: the original Wes Craven sequel, not the remade sequel, that
- 1:06:54Speaker 1: one has, like, the most interesting flashback in there because
- 1:06:56Speaker 1: a dog, a German shepherd, has a flashback in it.
- 1:06:59Speaker 1: If you've seen the movie, you know what I'm talking about.
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: Everybody in the film has a flashback.
- 1:07:03Speaker 2: We definitely need to put these on a full episode. Like,
- 1:07:06Speaker 2: I feel like we need to dive into these.
- 1:07:09Speaker 1: It really, yeah, this is some fascinating filmmaking here, but...
- 1:07:12Speaker 1: But yeah, a German shepherd has a full-on flashback scene.
- 1:07:16Speaker 4: You are selling me on these movies more than the
- 1:07:19Speaker 4: poster art did, which was pretty awesome, actually. That's the
- 1:07:22Speaker 4: one thing I remember about them was the video boxes,
- 1:07:25Speaker 4: which were great and made me want.
- 1:07:27Speaker 2: To see them, and then somehow I didn't. For as
- 1:07:29Speaker 2: much horror as I watched over the years, how I
- 1:07:31Speaker 2: didn't end up with those, I do not know.
- 1:07:33Speaker 1: Yeah, it is an exercise in patience, for sure. And
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: the last film I definitely want to put on my
- 1:07:39Speaker 1: naughty list, but this is actually a quality film. is
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: the more recent Krampus.
- 1:07:46Speaker 4: That one we, we saw and discussed at length at
- 1:07:50Speaker 4: the time, but it is one of those. I wonder,
- 1:07:52Speaker 4: cause that was like, we had just seen it and
- 1:07:54Speaker 4: then talked about it. So I want to kind of
- 1:07:56Speaker 4: revisit almost because I don't think I've watched it since then.
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: I watched, I haven't watched it this year yet, but
- 1:08:03Speaker 1: I did watch it last year and, I mean, you've
- 1:08:06Speaker 1: got a great cast in there. It's very kind of,
- 1:08:08Speaker 1: you know, cheeky kind of black comedy sort of thing
- 1:08:11Speaker 1: like that. But you still have basically a family being
- 1:08:13Speaker 1: murdered by this ethereal force, you know, that being Krampus.
- 1:08:16Speaker 1: And they all deserve it as well. And, of course,
- 1:08:19Speaker 1: being directed by Michael, what's his face, from Trick or Treat.
- 1:08:24Speaker 2: Oh, yeah. Yeah, so. It looked great. I remember, like,
- 1:08:27Speaker 2: visuals were amazing.
- 1:08:29Speaker 4: I felt like there's that weird in the middle where
- 1:08:32Speaker 4: it almost crosses the line for me where everything comes alive.
- 1:08:35Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:08:37Speaker 1: You do have the presence of the toys.
- 1:08:40Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:08:42Speaker 2: That whole part feels silly to me.
- 1:08:44Speaker 4: And like almost because on the other sides of it
- 1:08:48Speaker 4: are so good. And I'm just like, That's really bringing
- 1:08:51Speaker 4: this movie to.
- 1:08:51Speaker 2: I know, but it redeems itself. But again, I feel
- 1:08:54Speaker 2: like I need to watch it again and see how
- 1:08:56Speaker 2: I land on that part. Yeah, I will agree that
- 1:08:59Speaker 2: it does get a little.
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: goofy in that part there. But I think it does
- 1:09:02Speaker 1: wrap up nicely, redeem itself. And frankly, I think it
- 1:09:05Speaker 1: has a great ending. I'm not going to spoil too much,
- 1:09:07Speaker 1: but I do love a good downer ending when it
- 1:09:09Speaker 1: comes to a horror movie.
- 1:09:11Speaker 2: That one definitely, yeah, we won't ruin it, I guess.
- 1:09:15Speaker 2: But it is not a cheery ending we'll go with.
- 1:09:17Speaker 2: In fact, it's like, More than most sad movie endings. Like,
- 1:09:21Speaker 2: it is a very grand sad movie ending.
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: But, yeah, the thing is, though, it's an honest ending, though. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:09:27Speaker 2: It's a very honest ending, so I appreciate that.
- 1:09:32Speaker 1: I want to get into some weird Christmas movies. Because
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: there's certainly many, many of those. Being a wrestling fan,
- 1:09:40Speaker 1: I've got to go... Into both of these films. I
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: think you know what I'm talking about.
- 1:09:44Speaker 2: I see where it's coming. That's another one of those
- 1:09:47Speaker 2: I remember at the time and was like, I don't
- 1:09:50Speaker 2: even think I have the energy to put it on
- 1:09:51Speaker 2: my watch list right now. It's just been pushed off
- 1:09:55Speaker 2: for a couple of years now.
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: And both of these Christmas movies could not be any different.
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: You've got on one hand the Hulk Hogan classic Santa
- 1:10:06Speaker 1: with Muscles.
- 1:10:09Speaker 2: That one is a whole nother, I think I didn't
- 1:10:11Speaker 2: know that existed for a long time. And then more
- 1:10:14Speaker 2: recently people have brought it up in the, look at
- 1:10:17Speaker 2: these ridiculous Christmas movies. And I've seen it then and went,
- 1:10:21Speaker 2: oh God, how did I miss this? And then, thank
- 1:10:24Speaker 2: God I missed this.
- 1:10:25Speaker 1: That was kind of like in the Mr. Nanny era.
- 1:10:28Speaker 2: When I feel like he did almost too much at
- 1:10:30Speaker 2: that point and things got lost, like this one. Because
- 1:10:33Speaker 2: I don't know that anybody saw this at the time.
- 1:10:36Speaker 1: The Hallmark filmmakers look at this movie and go, damn.
- 1:10:40Speaker 2: We thought we were cutting corners. Yeah.
- 1:10:42Speaker 1: But yeah, the production value is pretty low. Story's pretty thin.
- 1:10:45Speaker 1: It's Hulk Hogan in a Santa suit, folks. It's not
- 1:10:48Speaker 1: that much. But the one I will give a little
- 1:10:51Speaker 1: bit of redeeming value to, a more recent Christmas film
- 1:10:57Speaker 1: that involves a professional wrestler, I'm referring to Santa's Slave, starring...
- 1:11:03Speaker 1: Wrestling superstar Bill Goldberg.
- 1:11:05Speaker 2: That's the one I thought you were originally going to
- 1:11:07Speaker 2: go with. Yes, yeah.
- 1:11:08Speaker 4: Because nobody would understand the Santa persona better than Goldberg.
- 1:11:15Speaker 2: A Jewish man. Seems like unless they're making that point,
- 1:11:20Speaker 2: that's an odd way to go.
- 1:11:21Speaker 1: Which they don't.
- 1:11:23Speaker 2: So it is strange to pick. Goldberg as your Santa Claus.
- 1:11:27Speaker 1: I mean, they wanted a large guy who can look
- 1:11:30Speaker 1: threatening and menacing without having any makeup.
- 1:11:33Speaker 2: And that he does.
- 1:11:34Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, Bill can totally look menacing.
- 1:11:36Speaker 4: Physically, it all makes sense. That's what they're going for.
- 1:11:39Speaker 4: But yeah, it's just funny that his name's Goldberg. I
- 1:11:42Speaker 4: think we all kind of know.
- 1:11:43Speaker 2: Probably not a big Christmas guy growing up.
- 1:11:47Speaker 1: And one I will throw in for honorable mention, this
- 1:11:49Speaker 1: isn't necessarily, this falls under a Christmas movie. It does
- 1:11:52Speaker 1: contain wrestlers, but it's more of a documentary. I Am
- 1:11:56Speaker 1: Santa Claus, which is basically a look into people who
- 1:11:59Speaker 1: are professional Santa Claus actors.
- 1:12:01Speaker 2: I think I knew of this one, but yeah, I
- 1:12:04Speaker 2: have not watched this.
- 1:12:05Speaker 1: But it is hosted by wrestler Mick Foley, who is
- 1:12:08Speaker 1: a tremendous Christmas fan.
- 1:12:11Speaker 2: Mick Foley is a lot of things. It's exhausting trying
- 1:12:15Speaker 2: to pin down what exactly Mick Foley is.
- 1:12:17Speaker 1: Having met the gentleman on more than one occasion, he
- 1:12:20Speaker 1: is a tremendous human being.
- 1:12:21Speaker 2: A wonderful, nice guy.
- 1:12:22Speaker 1: But yeah, rollercoaster enthusiast and tremendous Christmas enthusiast. So having
- 1:12:28Speaker 1: him host this documentary and be kind of the figurehead
- 1:12:31Speaker 1: of it, it just makes sense. But there's some other,
- 1:12:34Speaker 1: like Rowdy Roddy Piper appears in the movie at one
- 1:12:37Speaker 1: point and a handful of other wrestlers. He's talking to
- 1:12:41Speaker 1: them or just going around different things. So he gets
- 1:12:43Speaker 1: some of his wrestling buddies in the movie. talking about
- 1:12:46Speaker 1: christmas so it's really weird.
- 1:12:48Speaker 2: To get interesting side area there you.
- 1:12:50Speaker 1: Get all these guys that are wrestlers and they're not
- 1:12:52Speaker 1: talking about wrestling and i'm like this is strange but
- 1:12:55Speaker 1: yeah but it's a nice it's an interesting side i
- 1:12:57Speaker 1: would throw that as an honorable mention.
- 1:12:59Speaker 2: Interesting see i was looking down the list of like
- 1:13:03Speaker 2: ones that again there's so many there's ones that i
- 1:13:06Speaker 2: just didn't even like i think i barely remember when
- 1:13:09Speaker 2: this came out last year But there is a movie
- 1:13:13Speaker 2: called Fat Man that stars Mel Gibson as a Santa Claus.
- 1:13:19Speaker 1: Person angry Santa Claus yes.
- 1:13:21Speaker 2: And what.
- 1:13:25Speaker 4: It is like any movie you make with Mel Gibson
- 1:13:28Speaker 4: you need to be I guess winter pun intended on
- 1:13:31Speaker 4: thin ice in general but yeah making him a angry
- 1:13:35Speaker 4: Santa I'm just like I don't know what we're doing
- 1:13:37Speaker 4: with this guy anymore and that seems like a weird direction.
- 1:13:40Speaker 1: I've heard from more than one person of the merits
- 1:13:45Speaker 1: of this film that it's worth checking out the thing
- 1:13:49Speaker 1: I don't like about it is that it's a serious film.
- 1:13:52Speaker 1: Like there's no joke in it. It's like, he's like,
- 1:13:55Speaker 1: and he, I don't even think he's necessarily, I don't know.
- 1:13:58Speaker 1: I'm not sure if he's actually Santa Claus. He's just
- 1:14:00Speaker 1: like an angry guy in a suit that takes out
- 1:14:02Speaker 1: bad people.
- 1:14:02Speaker 4: I was just looking at the different list and it,
- 1:14:05Speaker 4: so many streaming services. Now you can just bring up
- 1:14:07Speaker 4: a list of their holiday, whatever they own. And like,
- 1:14:10Speaker 4: that was one that was sitting there and I was
- 1:14:11Speaker 4: just like, I don't, I don't know if I'm up
- 1:14:13Speaker 4: for this right now.
- 1:14:14Speaker 2: I'm like, I think that might have to wait.
- 1:14:15Speaker 1: Yeah. I'm going to, One I was curious about, it's
- 1:14:18Speaker 1: a fairly recent one, too, that actually started kind of
- 1:14:20Speaker 1: popping up with some new lists, is Anna and the Apocalypse.
- 1:14:23Speaker 2: It's a UK film.
- 1:14:25Speaker 4: I heard a lot about that last year, and it
- 1:14:26Speaker 4: made me want to see it then, and I just
- 1:14:28Speaker 4: didn't get to.
- 1:14:29Speaker 2: It then, and now I feel like this year might
- 1:14:31Speaker 2: be a good time.
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: Yeah, my friend Caroline actually recommended it. It was kind
- 1:14:34Speaker 1: of like, you know, you go into it like you're, okay,
- 1:14:37Speaker 1: it's a Christmas movie, but there's a zombie apocalypse going,
- 1:14:39Speaker 1: so it's kind of like.
- 1:14:39Speaker 2: And it's a musical.
- 1:14:41Speaker 1: And it's a musical, but it's a strange musical, because
- 1:14:44Speaker 1: I was, as she told me, it's like... It's a
- 1:14:46Speaker 1: movie you forget it's a musical until there's a musical
- 1:14:48Speaker 1: number that's reminding you.
- 1:14:49Speaker 2: But it's not like a lot of musical numbers.
- 1:14:52Speaker 4: It sounds like all of that should be taking away
- 1:14:55Speaker 4: from each other or messing up what the other one's doing.
- 1:14:58Speaker 2: From what I heard last year, it does all of
- 1:15:00Speaker 2: them really well. It's a good Christmas movie. It's a
- 1:15:03Speaker 2: good zombie movie.
- 1:15:05Speaker 4: And turns out to be a pretty good musical in
- 1:15:07Speaker 4: the moments that it decides to be.
- 1:15:08Speaker 2: She said it was quite charming. I definitely want to
- 1:15:12Speaker 2: get to that one.
- 1:15:13Speaker 1: Another one, it was apparently popular enough that it married
- 1:15:16Speaker 1: a sequel, but the Kurt Russell Christmas Chronicles. It's on Netflix.
- 1:15:20Speaker 4: See, that's almost like there's a step just above. And
- 1:15:24Speaker 4: maybe it's the Netflix ones that are coming in.
- 1:15:26Speaker 2: A little higher in budget.
- 1:15:28Speaker 4: Maybe they have more money to throw around these days
- 1:15:30Speaker 4: because Netflix is running the world now. So, yeah, it's
- 1:15:34Speaker 4: like there's a lot of those that are getting made.
- 1:15:36Speaker 4: And I don't think it takes as much money. for
- 1:15:39Speaker 4: them to be successful on the books enough to turn
- 1:15:42Speaker 4: around and make another one.
- 1:15:43Speaker 2: Sure.
- 1:15:43Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:15:44Speaker 4: That's the ones I will, I'm definitely going to get
- 1:15:46Speaker 4: into later. There's ones that are old series, but like
- 1:15:49Speaker 4: the one I didn't get to this, this year was, um,
- 1:15:52Speaker 4: there's the princess switch, which was, I'm like, again, this
- 1:15:57Speaker 4: is how I get roped into any of these. One
- 1:15:59Speaker 4: of which I will come back to later. Um, is like,
- 1:16:02Speaker 4: who did they sucker in to be the star? So
- 1:16:04Speaker 4: like impressive enough that for that one, they got Kurt Russell,
- 1:16:07Speaker 4: but then like, Again, another one that I think was
- 1:16:10Speaker 4: a little cut above budget wise that they pulled in
- 1:16:13Speaker 4: Vanessa Hutchins, who I think is genuinely a good actress
- 1:16:17Speaker 4: and sort of gets shortchanged because of where she came from.
- 1:16:19Speaker 2: Everybody still treats her like a dumb kid actor.
- 1:16:21Speaker 4: But I'm like, as the years went on, she became
- 1:16:24Speaker 4: a really good actress and is in several of these.
- 1:16:27Speaker 4: She started off in one that's like a night.
- 1:16:30Speaker 2: A Christmas night or something, but it's like night with
- 1:16:32Speaker 2: a K and he's coming back in time and it's
- 1:16:34Speaker 2: a Christmas romance movie.
- 1:16:36Speaker 6: Okay.
- 1:16:37Speaker 2: That's overwhelming.
- 1:16:38Speaker 4: But then she did this Christmas switch or the princess switch.
- 1:16:42Speaker 4: And it's, I'm assuming Prince and the pauper type of
- 1:16:45Speaker 4: thing where one's a princess and they look the same
- 1:16:47Speaker 4: and they switch out for the Christmas or something.
- 1:16:49Speaker 2: I don't know. I didn't watch it yet.
- 1:16:51Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:16:51Speaker 2: I probably will just because I really like Vanessa Hutchins.
- 1:16:54Speaker 2: I kind of want to see what they do with this.
- 1:16:56Speaker 4: But by the time I realized they'd made one, I
- 1:16:59Speaker 4: looked and like, oh, The Princess Switch 2. Oh wait,
- 1:17:02Speaker 4: The Princess Switch 3 came out this year. And I
- 1:17:05Speaker 4: was like, these things, as long as they do pretty
- 1:17:08Speaker 4: well on streaming services, like Greenlight pops up and they
- 1:17:11Speaker 4: will have another one out for the next Christmas.
- 1:17:13Speaker 2: And another one out for the next Christmas.
- 1:17:15Speaker 4: So like, this is one of those that like, they're
- 1:17:17Speaker 4: just cranking them out because just enough. I mean, there's
- 1:17:20Speaker 4: such a following to these Christmas movies that they're just like,
- 1:17:24Speaker 4: it does not take much to nudge it up to the,
- 1:17:26Speaker 4: all right.
- 1:17:27Speaker 2: We're doing good. Let's make another one.
- 1:17:28Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:17:28Speaker 4: So when you can do that with something like pulling
- 1:17:31Speaker 4: in Kurt Russell, like Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn are
- 1:17:34Speaker 4: in those movies. And like the fact that they suckered
- 1:17:37Speaker 4: them both into doing a Christmas movie and then coming
- 1:17:40Speaker 4: back to do another Christmas movie is like kind of
- 1:17:42Speaker 4: amazing and shows the power of the Sub-genre that is Christmas.
- 1:17:48Speaker 1: But strange enough is Christmas Chronicles keeps popping up on
- 1:17:52Speaker 1: a lot of best of lists. So apparently it's a
- 1:17:54Speaker 1: quality film.
- 1:17:55Speaker 4: And I know it must be something, at least as
- 1:17:58Speaker 4: far as being pretty proud of what they were doing.
- 1:18:01Speaker 4: Because I saw when the first one came out, Kurt
- 1:18:04Speaker 4: Russell did a ton of press.
- 1:18:05Speaker 1: He did.
- 1:18:06Speaker 2: And was like.
- 1:18:07Speaker 4: I mean, I saw him do way more press for
- 1:18:09Speaker 4: that than when he was in Guardians of the Galaxy 2.
- 1:18:13Speaker 2: That had a huge push, but it wasn't really a
- 1:18:15Speaker 2: ton of Kurt Russell stuff. It was just here and there.
- 1:18:18Speaker 4: But he was up front and center when it was
- 1:18:20Speaker 4: time for that Christmas movie.
- 1:18:22Speaker 2: And I was like, he really is proud of this thing.
- 1:18:24Speaker 1: It also was nice that he didn't have to shave
- 1:18:26Speaker 1: his beard from Hateful Eight.
- 1:18:27Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:18:27Speaker 1: Yeah, he just grew it out even more.
- 1:18:28Speaker 2: Look, I am Santa, guys. I didn't want to tell anybody,
- 1:18:31Speaker 2: but I'm Santa Claus.
- 1:18:32Speaker 1: Yeah, you know what? That's fine by me.
- 1:18:34Speaker 2: It's Kurt Russell. I do love Kurt Russell.
- 1:18:35Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:18:36Speaker 2: He can kind of do no wrong.
- 1:18:38Speaker 1: And then, of course, a couple other more recent films.
- 1:18:42Speaker 1: One I have seen, it's actually a decent one, is
- 1:18:44Speaker 1: Office Christmas Party. It came out about, what, less than
- 1:18:47Speaker 1: five years ago. And you know, Jason Bateman's in it,
- 1:18:49Speaker 1: Kate McKinnon. There's a lot of comedians in there.
- 1:18:53Speaker 4: I think that's another one of those comedies that just
- 1:18:55Speaker 4: got lumped in with the rest and I didn't get
- 1:18:57Speaker 4: around to. But, like, again, sometimes they're ones that are
- 1:19:00Speaker 4: better than others. And I feel like I don't ever
- 1:19:03Speaker 4: know which one is which to go with half the
- 1:19:05Speaker 4: time until it takes a few years and I actually
- 1:19:07Speaker 4: hear something about it.
- 1:19:08Speaker 2: So.
- 1:19:09Speaker 1: Yeah, I wouldn't say it's a great film, but it's
- 1:19:12Speaker 1: got some good laughs in there. It's an enjoyable movie.
- 1:19:15Speaker 1: And then, of course, I think this... It was on
- 1:19:17Speaker 1: HBO Max. One of the streaming services, but this new one,
- 1:19:20Speaker 1: 8-Bit Christmas, that just came out.
- 1:19:21Speaker 4: I watched the trailer for that this weekend, and it
- 1:19:24Speaker 4: looks a lot of fun. And I like it because
- 1:19:27Speaker 4: they're sort of playing with that retelling of it. It's
- 1:19:30Speaker 4: doing a Goldberg's, no pun to the previous Goldberg, although
- 1:19:33Speaker 4: he is on the show now.
- 1:19:34Speaker 2: But it is funny that it does that. I don't know.
- 1:19:37Speaker 2: It was 87, 8? I don't know. It was just
- 1:19:40Speaker 2: the 80s.
- 1:19:41Speaker 4: And then even that part where it's like, it's him
- 1:19:43Speaker 4: riding his bike. He's like, his daughter's like.
- 1:19:46Speaker 2: Were you wearing a helmet? Of course, we always wore
- 1:19:48Speaker 2: helmets in the 80s. So it's like, I like he's
- 1:19:51Speaker 2: doctoring the story to fit what he needs it to be.
- 1:19:54Speaker 2: And that's, that looks entertaining.
- 1:19:57Speaker 1: And it's all because he's trying to get a Nintendo.
- 1:19:59Speaker 2: Neil Patrick Harris is always kind of entertaining. Yeah.
- 1:20:02Speaker 4: Which reminds me of another thing that happens in movies
- 1:20:06Speaker 4: when you make a running series and then they... at
- 1:20:09Speaker 4: some point decide to make a Christmas movie when the
- 1:20:12Speaker 4: other ones weren't. When you get something like a Harold
- 1:20:15Speaker 4: and Kumar make a Christmas movie eventually. Like, out of
- 1:20:19Speaker 4: a series that was nothing to do with Christmas, they
- 1:20:21Speaker 4: then come up with a Christmas movie.
- 1:20:22Speaker 1: And they did that one in 3D as well. Pretty
- 1:20:25Speaker 1: sure they.
- 1:20:25Speaker 2: Did, yeah.
- 1:20:26Speaker 4: But that was like the, what was the other one
- 1:20:28Speaker 4: I saw on the list was the Bad Moms Christmas.
- 1:20:32Speaker 4: You know, where it's like the first one had nothing
- 1:20:33Speaker 4: to do with that, but then they were like, oh,
- 1:20:35Speaker 4: let's do a Christmas movie, yeah. It's just, again, so
- 1:20:40Speaker 4: much of it is just, I guess, finances at that point. And, like,
- 1:20:43Speaker 4: maybe it's combining your two.
- 1:20:45Speaker 2: It's like, well, the first movie did good, but there's
- 1:20:47Speaker 2: a built-in audience for Christmas movies. So what if we
- 1:20:50Speaker 2: put the two together? And, like, I don't know. I
- 1:20:53Speaker 2: guess that's the reasoning behind it.
- 1:20:55Speaker 1: You know, another Christmas movie that's kind of... This one
- 1:20:58Speaker 1: doesn't get talked about at least enough that I have
- 1:21:00Speaker 1: seen it replayed a lot. And it's a remake of
- 1:21:03Speaker 1: a classic. The Bishop's Wife. Remake of? Or The Preacher's Wife.
- 1:21:07Speaker 1: Remake of The Bishop's Wife.
- 1:21:08Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:21:09Speaker 4: I remember when it came out, it got a good
- 1:21:11Speaker 4: amount of push just because you put Denzel in anything
- 1:21:13Speaker 4: and people care.
- 1:21:14Speaker 1: Denzel and Whitney Houston.
- 1:21:16Speaker 2: But, yeah. I will raise you your Denzel and add
- 1:21:19Speaker 2: in Whitney Houston. She doesn't do anything anymore. What the
- 1:21:23Speaker 2: hell is wrong? And this is like.
- 1:21:25Speaker 1: We're still in love with Whitney Houston at this point.
- 1:21:28Speaker 1: Her career is still going very strong. A definite high
- 1:21:32Speaker 1: point for her.
- 1:21:32Speaker 4: It's like post-Super Bowl era when she's like the most
- 1:21:36Speaker 4: beloved figure in the country.
- 1:21:38Speaker 1: It came out in 96. It was a couple years
- 1:21:42Speaker 1: removed from the bodyguard.
- 1:21:43Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:21:43Speaker 1: So she's still riding that high.
- 1:21:46Speaker 2: That's a big ass win.
- 1:21:47Speaker 4: But this is maybe like the tail end of that.
- 1:21:49Speaker 4: Because then she also kind of went in a slump
- 1:21:51Speaker 4: and we just didn't see her much. And then when
- 1:21:54Speaker 4: we did, she was a mess. So the tail end
- 1:21:58Speaker 4: there got kind of messy.
- 1:21:59Speaker 1: I mean, she had a trio. I mean, you had,
- 1:22:01Speaker 1: you know, the bodyguard waiting to exhale and Bishop's wife.
- 1:22:04Speaker 1: They're just kind of like boom, boom, boom.
- 1:22:06Speaker 4: I mean, if she would have put efforts towards that,
- 1:22:09Speaker 4: she definitely could have like switched and become just full
- 1:22:12Speaker 4: on movie star. Like, I mean, she was for a minute,
- 1:22:14Speaker 4: but like she could have not been singing in these
- 1:22:17Speaker 4: things and still.
- 1:22:18Speaker 2: Been a movie star. She had the charisma.
- 1:22:20Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:22:20Speaker 2: She had, you know, the look. She had the talent. Like,
- 1:22:23Speaker 2: she could have done whatever she wanted. But I'm blaming
- 1:22:27Speaker 2: Bobby for all of it.
- 1:22:28Speaker 6: I know.
- 1:22:28Speaker 2: I know.
- 1:22:29Speaker 1: But, I mean, at least this one he really got to,
- 1:22:30Speaker 1: you know, utilize kind of both sides of her talent. And,
- 1:22:33Speaker 1: you know, Denzel.
- 1:22:34Speaker 2: I mean.
- 1:22:34Speaker 4: Denzel wins people over.
- 1:22:37Speaker 1: I will watch any movie that has that man in it.
- 1:22:40Speaker 1: I don't care if he's just reading the phone book.
- 1:22:42Speaker 1: And the thing, it always struck me, this is a
- 1:22:45Speaker 1: sidebar here, but the first time I saw Black Klansman,
- 1:22:49Speaker 1: and I'm watching... At the time.
- 1:22:51Speaker 2: I did not know that John David Washington was his son.
- 1:22:55Speaker 1: How could I have not? The man looks like Denzel.
- 1:22:59Speaker 1: He talks like Denzel. They have the same damn cadence
- 1:23:02Speaker 1: of speech.
- 1:23:03Speaker 2: He's got the presence. Yeah, he's definitely got it. They
- 1:23:04Speaker 2: have the same cadence of speech.
- 1:23:06Speaker 1: Number one, man, this guy's talented, but there's something so
- 1:23:09Speaker 1: familiar about him.
- 1:23:11Speaker 2: What is it? I can't put my finger on it.
- 1:23:13Speaker 1: I mean, I love that movie, and as a self-hating
- 1:23:17Speaker 1: white man, that just pissed me off at the end
- 1:23:19Speaker 1: of it.
- 1:23:19Speaker 2: I was... You're so like, yeah, they got the guys.
- 1:23:22Speaker 1: They all blew themselves up.
- 1:23:23Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:23:23Speaker 1: And then you get like the kind of the Spike
- 1:23:25Speaker 1: Lee kind of reminding us, oh, yeah, white people are
- 1:23:27Speaker 1: still terrible even today.
- 1:23:29Speaker 2: Yeah, you're not going to really get away from that. Yeah.
- 1:23:32Speaker 2: White people, they're everywhere. We think we get a victory,
- 1:23:35Speaker 2: and at the end of it, we're like, fuck. But yeah,
- 1:23:38Speaker 2: I just, yeah.
- 1:23:40Speaker 1: What always struck me funny is every time I see
- 1:23:42Speaker 1: John David Washington pop up something like, man, I don't
- 1:23:45Speaker 1: see how the hell I didn't know you were Denzel's kid.
- 1:23:48Speaker 2: I mean, that's not a bad place.
- 1:23:49Speaker 1: To start off. Yeah, but yeah, I tell you, I
- 1:23:52Speaker 1: see high things with that guy. Yeah, I gotta love
- 1:23:55Speaker 1: anything with Denzel, so Preacher's Wife definitely.
- 1:23:57Speaker 2: Pops up in there for me. Well, I mean, I
- 1:24:02Speaker 2: can rattle off plenty of lists here, but I think
- 1:24:06Speaker 2: that's all of the general ones we were gonna throw out.
- 1:24:11Speaker 2: The rest of them are specific ones that we watched.
- 1:24:15Speaker 1: Yeah, I got my trio here.
- 1:24:16Speaker 4: I think at this point, yeah, we'll just wrap up
- 1:24:19Speaker 4: this episode and we'll come back and focus in on
- 1:24:22Speaker 4: the ones we watched individually.
- 1:24:25Speaker 2: So I think that's the plan for now. So are
- 1:24:29Speaker 2: you ready?
- 1:24:29Speaker 4: Yes, sir.
- 1:24:30Speaker 2: Come back next episode and dig into these three, which
- 1:24:34Speaker 2: will then be six movies. Absolutely.
- 1:24:36Speaker 1: All right.
- 1:24:37Speaker 2: Well, until then, go refill your cup of cocoa here
- 1:24:41Speaker 2: and get ready. to get fired up for more Christmas.
- 1:24:48Speaker 4: Oh, yeah.
- 1:24:49Speaker 2: Otherwise, that about does it. We will return next time,
- 1:24:50Speaker 2: same geek feed. Thanks for listening.
- 1:25:09Speaker 5: Oh my god, it's here, this awful time of year.
- 1:25:14Speaker 3: How I hate the snow is falling, faulty neighbors.
- 1:25:18Speaker 1: Bragging about the gifts they're getting.
- 1:25:20Speaker 3: They said, they said, let me take a guess now,
- 1:25:23Speaker 3: your daddy came back rose again.
- 1:25:26Speaker 5: And then I had a revelation, this is my friends
- 1:25:29Speaker 5: who saw their lips clean shut with fear. Christmas lights
- 1:26:03Speaker 5: are live lighting up the night meanwhile I'm.
- 1:26:08Speaker 3: Inside Resume tonight.
- 1:26:13Speaker 5: Tonight. I have to do it right now.
- 1:26:16Speaker 2: So I will strike when all's asleep. And creep sneaking
- 1:26:20Speaker 2: through your chimney.
- 1:26:21Speaker 5: Saint Nick is gone for now.
- 1:26:24Speaker 1: Up on the housetop, gifts are mine.
- 1:26:26Speaker 5: Kiss your Christmas tree goodbye. Because this Christmas.
- 1:26:45Speaker 3: Everything will change when they see the flames this Christmas day.
- 1:26:50Speaker 3: Don't make fun of me, will you? Well, I'll show
- 1:26:58Speaker 3: you what true misery feels like.
- 1:27:00Speaker 2: You see, that's why.
- 1:27:03Speaker 5: I go insane.
- 1:27:14Speaker 3: Imagine this, 1,000 gifts and 16.
- 1:27:17Speaker 5: Trees all lagging a heap in a cold disc. I
- 1:27:23Speaker 5: strike my match and I trace the trail of gasoline.
- 1:27:27Speaker 3: Yeah. I'm learning this game. What a great game. This Christmas,
- 1:27:55Speaker 3: I'm burning to the ground. This Christmas, Santa's skipping town.
- 1:28:02Speaker 3: This Christmas, everything will change when they see the flames.
- 1:28:15Speaker 2: Very pepperminty i like it i went with one well
- 1:28:17Speaker 2: that's the thing i went there was one that was
- 1:28:19Speaker 2: because it's the swiss mess pack i was going old
- 1:28:21Speaker 2: school but um there was one pack that was specifically
- 1:28:26Speaker 2: peppermint flavored but i was like that might be overwhelming
- 1:28:28Speaker 2: so i went one versus two regular so that's only
- 1:28:32Speaker 2: a third what it normally would be so it makes
- 1:28:35Speaker 2: me think that would kill you in its original concentrated
- 1:28:39Speaker 2: form it would culinary choice. So yeah, I thought I'd
- 1:28:42Speaker 2: thin it out with some regular chocolate.
- 1:28:44Speaker 1: It is a very nice blend. The peppermint is there,
- 1:28:47Speaker 1: but it's not overwhelming. You have the chocolates and it balances.
- 1:28:50Speaker 1: It's wonderful. Thank you very much.
