Latest / The Catholic Current / LTACL: The Least Pleasurable Sin? (Fr. Robert McTeigue, S.J.)
Transcript
- 0:00Let me ask you this. Is there a nice way to tell someone to go to hell?
- 0:04A cynical person once said that the art of diplomacy
- 0:08is the art of telling someone to go to hell in such a way that they
- 0:12thank you for the advice, they ask for directions, and they
- 0:16actually look forward to making the trip. Now the devil would say,
- 0:20I can do you better than that. I can tempt you to a deadly sin
- 0:24that gives you no pleasure at all, that you don't want
- 0:28to let go of, and will take you straight to hell.
- 0:32Is that really a thing? Stay with me, I've got a story to tell. Hi, I'm Judgement Father
- 0:36Robert McTague, your host every day of the Catholic Current, coming to you from the Station of the Cross
- 0:40Catholic Media Network. Let's take a closer look. Glad you're here.
- 0:44I've been doing a series recently on the deadly sins, and at least
- 0:48some of the deadly sins kind of give you something for it. You know what I mean?
- 0:52Gluttony, you get a decent meal out of it every once in a while. But what about envy?
- 0:56You might say, well, I don't know, Father, what about envy? But I need to make a distinction.
- 1:00I need to make a distinction between envy and jealousy.
- 1:04I think sometimes they're used interchangeably in conversation, and it can lead
- 1:08to bad outcomes. For example, back in the day when Oprah was still on
- 1:12television, she was recounting how she read in the Bible where God
- 1:16said, you know, I am a jealous God. And she said, what? God is jealous
- 1:20of me? And that's when I decided to, blah, blah, blah. No, no, no, that's not
- 1:24what that means. Jealousy means I want to keep
- 1:28what is mine, and I don't want you to have it. Now, jealousy can be a bad thing,
- 1:32except when God does it. Because God
- 1:36wants the best for the beloved. That would be us.
- 1:40And what's best for his beloved is him, which is why God doesn't
- 1:44like to share. God doesn't want to share his beloved with
- 1:48the false gods, with the idols, and certainly not with the demons.
- 1:52So we should all breathe a sigh of relief that God is a jealous God.
- 1:56What about envy? So if jealousy says I want to protect
- 2:00what's mine, envy says I want what's yours.
- 2:04And I hate you because what you have
- 2:08is yours. And I resent that you
- 2:12have what I don't have.
- 2:16You see how poisonous that can be, right? Listen to what
- 2:20John Vianney said about envy. He said,
- 2:50So says St. John Vianney.
- 3:04That makes envy look kind of ugly, doesn't it?
- 3:08It does seem to be irrational.
- 3:12There is no pleasure in envy, and yet,
- 3:16yet people can cling to it, can have a death grip
- 3:20on envy. I've known all too many people who've
- 3:24lost everything, their health,
- 3:28their career, their home, their family, their jobs,
- 3:32their love, their lives, because
- 3:36they sat in a corner in the grip of envy and resentment,
- 3:40angry with all the world and all of creation
- 3:44that the world never gave them a chance for their own
- 3:48personal Nuremberg trials.
- 3:52God have mercy on them all. Please let us not suffer
- 3:56that fate. Now here's the ironic thing. Those
- 4:00things that we're envious of, human loves, human associations,
- 4:04object possessions, wealth, power, reputation,
- 4:08clicks on social media, all those things, you know what?
- 4:12We can't take any of them with us when we die.
- 4:16As the saying goes, there's no pocket in the shroud. The only thing we bring
- 4:20with us into the next life is our character,
- 4:24which of course is spiritual and not material.
- 4:28What's the moral of the story? How do we fix it? Well, let's turn to Scripture. Let's turn
- 4:32to St. Paul, his epistle to the Colossians. He said,
- 4:36set your mind on the things that are above and not on the
- 4:40things that are upon the earth. So let's have an
- 4:44examination of conscience. Do I have envy
- 4:48in my heart? Do I grind my teeth and clench my
- 4:52fist because someone has something that I don't
- 4:56have? St. Paul would say, let it go.
- 5:00Let it go. Set your heart on the
- 5:04treasure, on the love that the world cannot give,
- 5:08cannot equal, and cannot take away.
- 5:12And that, of course, is the happiness of heaven. Think on these things today.
- 5:16Take them to prayer and talk about it with those you love. Go in peace
- 5:20and please do pray for me, for I am a sinner.
