- 0:12neglected. It is vital that we give attention to our
- 0:15families while we can, and it is especially important to
- 0:20give attention to what God says in his word about our homes.
- 0:24For the next few moments, let's join Scott Pauley as we open the scriptures
- 0:28and and find God's message for your family.
- 0:40Hello friends, this is Scott Pauley and welcome to Enjoying the Journey. We are
- 0:44having some family talk this week, conversations with
- 0:49individual family members in our own home and talking about some things
- 0:53that we trust will be a great encouragement to you and to your
- 0:56family. Yesterday, I had the joy of having a conversation with Dad
- 1:00about the importance of right priorities, and today
- 1:04we have someone very important on this episode,
- 1:07and that is my sweet mother. I thank God for Mom.
- 1:11She has been a constant encouragement to me
- 1:15through every season of life, and Mom, I'm thrilled to have you with us for
- 1:19the conversation today. It's good to be here. Thank you. I want to begin with
- 1:22a scripture, and I'm choosing this Uh, Mom would
- 1:26not say this of herself, but I can say it of her. Proverbs 31 gives
- 1:30a description of a virtuous woman. It's a lengthy portion,
- 1:34it's a rich passage of scripture, but every time I think of the closing
- 1:37verses of Proverbs 31, I think of my mother.
- 1:40Beginning in verse 25, it says, strength and honor are
- 1:44her clothing, and she shall rejoice in
- 1:48time to come. I love the fact there's There's strength in honor,
- 1:52not just what she puts on but what she's put in. That's her clothing,
- 1:56and it's connected here to joy. She rejoices in time to come. Then it
- 2:00says she openeth her mouth with wisdom, and in her tongue is the law
- 2:04of kindness. She looketh well to the ways of her household and eateth
- 2:07not the bread of idleness. Her children arise up and call her
- 2:11blessed, her husband also, and he praiseth her.
- 2:15A mom, on behalf of Dad and me and Stacy,
- 2:19we're just so grateful for the love you've shown and the
- 2:23joyful way you guided our home growing up.
- 2:26That's really what I want to discuss today because look,
- 2:30there's a lot of sad people in the world and there are a lot of
- 2:33bad things going on in the world, but if you can keep home happy,
- 2:37you can make it. If children can come back and find
- 2:41a haven and joy, they're going to make it.
- 2:45Um, what are some things God taught you about the importance
- 2:50of joy in the home? Well, I think the
- 2:53very beginning of realizing that there was joy in the home was
- 2:57in my own growing up years. I grew up in a happy home
- 3:02and, um, my parents, um,
- 3:05were just simple people. Uh, my dad was
- 3:08a coal miner. And a farmer. And my
- 3:12mother was a stay-at-home mom. But we had a happy home.
- 3:16It was very— life was simple and
- 3:20not complicated like, like it is today. But I
- 3:24enjoyed being home. I loved home.
- 3:27So that gave me a foundation to want to have a happy
- 3:31home. All little girls dream of growing up and
- 3:34marrying their Prince Charming and having a happy home with children.
- 3:38And so I feel like that's what happened to me. I was able to do
- 3:41that. Very thankful that God put my
- 3:45husband and I together, your dad and I together,
- 3:48and that we have been able to enjoy.
- 3:51But I think the very principle
- 3:55is the foundation that what you build that home
- 3:58on is God's Word. And the
- 4:04consistency in raising your children,
- 4:08the consistency between husband and wife,
- 4:11and that you agree. Sometimes you agree to disagree,
- 4:16but you agree, and the children see a united
- 4:19front, but they don't hear fussing
- 4:23and fighting and a lot of negative things
- 4:27in the home. But, um, you know, keep it happy.
- 4:31I've had music in the home and just keep it happy. So what you're saying,
- 4:35first off, it's a choice. It definitely is a choice.
- 4:39I mean, it doesn't just happen. It's not just some magical
- 4:42thing. You know, people choose joy. That's right.
- 4:46To rejoice in the Lord. Now you saw in Grandma and Grandpa's
- 4:51home growing up joy and simplicity that gave you a framework.
- 4:55Frankly, there are a lot of people today who've never seen that. They didn't grow
- 4:58up in that kind of home. And I think that's where this choice really
- 5:02comes in because people have to say, well, my home was not that
- 5:05way growing up, but I'm going to start right where I am today and
- 5:09I'm going to make our home a happy home starting where I am.
- 5:13Does that mean that happy homes are perfect homes? Oh, definitely not.
- 5:17Definitely not. We often laugh.
- 5:20People sometimes think you have a happy home or a
- 5:24perfect home or a perfect marriage or whatever.
- 5:28And, you know, we're all human. We're all flesh. And so,
- 5:31no, it's not perfect, but we choose to make
- 5:36it a joyous place. I always desired to have a home that
- 5:40when your dad came home from the office
- 5:44or from wherever he was out working,
- 5:48that he was happy to be home. He wanted to
- 5:51come home. And for you and Stacy, for you
- 5:55all to want to come home when school was over.
- 5:58So that was my desire,
- 6:02to make it homey, but make it enjoyable.
- 6:06Well, you know, I'm convinced fathers are called on to lead their families,
- 6:10but I believe more and more that mothers guide the spirit
- 6:14of the home. The atmosphere of the house, you know, the— I'm
- 6:19sorry to use a word, but it seems shallow, but the feel of
- 6:23home life is dictated so much by the wife,
- 6:27by the mother. And I think one of
- 6:31the things that God has taught me, and I've seen this in you, is that
- 6:34before you can have a happy home, you have to keep a happy heart.
- 6:38That's true. You have really worked at trying
- 6:42to have a devotional life and keeping your own soul glad.
- 6:46That's essential, isn't it? Yes, it definitely is,
- 6:49because life gets tough and every day is not a
- 6:53happy day, but we can be happy within our soul because
- 6:57of what Christ did for us. And if, if we
- 7:01choose to every day begin the day with the
- 7:04Lord and, um, and then from there, then share that
- 7:09with your family, then you can have a happy
- 7:12home. I've told people all over the country, the greatest thing you and Dad gave
- 7:16us— I mean, you gave us material things and you gave us rules
- 7:20and you gave us a few spankings along the way, but the greatest thing you
- 7:23gave us was a good dose of the joy of the Lord. We actually grew
- 7:26up believing it was enjoyable to serve the Lord and you
- 7:29could have fun and live the Christian life. And so I'm
- 7:33very grateful to God for that. This whole emphasis on enjoying
- 7:36the journey for me really started very early on that way.
- 7:40What would you say, just give us 2 or 3 quickly practical suggestions
- 7:45for people who want to keep home happy, try to make it a
- 7:48more joyful environment. Where should they start?
- 7:51Okay. Well, they should start definitely with the Lord.
- 7:55And then after that, then husbands and wives,
- 7:59they need to have a joint effort. That they're
- 8:03a team working together. So they need to keep their marriage
- 8:08happy, their right between
- 8:11themselves, and then to share that with the children.
- 8:15And yes, you're gonna deal with difficulties as days goes by,
- 8:19but the Lord will help you. And then
- 8:22for those that— one thing I might say, I grew up in a home
- 8:26where my mother was a stay-at-home mom, and I realize that in the days in
- 8:29which we live, There are a lot of homes that both
- 8:33husband and wife are working, and you understand that
- 8:37it's not always possible for mama to
- 8:41be home, but you can still have a happy home.
- 8:44That means husband and wife have to work together a little harder and
- 8:48help each other a little more to get through the days so that
- 8:51there can still be that quality time that you spend with your
- 8:55children. Just, you don't have to spend money on them. You don't have to buy
- 8:59them things or take them to do things. Just spend time with them.
- 9:03Read a book, sing, laugh, play games,
- 9:08whatever it is. The time element, I think, is probably one
- 9:12of the most important qualities that I can think will help with a happy home.
- 9:15That's so helpful because growing up,
- 9:18Dad was very busy. He was working in business and in ministry,
- 9:22out of town a good bit. But you worked to make even the little things
- 9:26special for us. And then we all worked, and Dad worked real hard at having
- 9:30family night, and that was not always some elaborate thing, but it was
- 9:33time together, and that certainly helps. I like what you said
- 9:38earlier about playing good music around the house. I think that helps the atmosphere of
- 9:41a home. But I want to encourage everyone that's listening to us today, there are
- 9:43no perfect families, there are no perfect situations, but you can
- 9:47have the joy of the Lord and you can have a happy home.
- 9:52And that's what we're praying for you today. God bless you and your family.
