- 0:10Speaker 1: What's up, everybody?
- 0:11Speaker 2: Welcome back to another episode of Bucko Territory, presented to
- 0:13Speaker 2: you by the Foul Territory Network.
- 0:15Speaker 1: I'm Noahiles. Joining me as always is.
- 0:17Speaker 2: My pal and co host Platinum Key aka Mark Josh
- 0:21Speaker 2: Harrison will be on this show later for his weekly segment,
- 0:24Speaker 2: Jay Hey Now, But first Mark and I are gonna
- 0:26Speaker 2: break down what's going on in the world of Pirates baseball.
- 0:30Speaker 2: They made a bullpen move. Dennis Santana's out. Ron Mayor
- 0:35Speaker 2: not chi Oh Mayor not.
- 0:37Speaker 1: Chio is in h You will see him pitch.
- 0:41Speaker 2: I probably pitch this weekend for the Pittsburgh Pirates as
- 0:44Speaker 2: they have a massive home stand that begins this weekend
- 0:48Speaker 2: Yinserpalooza against the Chicago Cubs. They play six games at
- 0:52Speaker 2: panc Park over the next six days and they are
- 0:55Speaker 2: against two teams currently oad of them in the National
- 0:58Speaker 2: League wildcard standings. So Mark, before we get into the
- 1:01Speaker 2: big week ahead, let's talk about Ron Maranaccio.
- 1:06Speaker 1: He's a new Pirate, new bullpen guy. You've been wanting
- 1:10Speaker 1: bullpen help. You got it? Are you satisfied? No?
- 1:13Speaker 3: Not yet? I mean it is an improvement, which not
- 1:17Speaker 3: really saying much given the state of the bullpen. But yeah,
- 1:21Speaker 3: I mean he's Ron Manonaccio pitched for the Yankees for
- 1:25Speaker 3: a couple of years then was dfa'd by them. So
- 1:28Speaker 3: it's a bit ironic that a guy who we picked
- 1:32Speaker 3: up from the Yankees as a DFA, Dennis Santana, is
- 1:34Speaker 3: the DFA for another guy from the Yankees, although he
- 1:38Speaker 3: was not in the Yankees previous at his last stop.
- 1:42Speaker 3: But yeah, he's had a pretty concerning year. The thing
- 1:46Speaker 3: that jumps out to me is the one point four
- 1:48Speaker 3: to five whip for Maronaccio. This is a guy who
- 1:53Speaker 3: was traded for basically like slightly above cash considerations. I'd
- 1:59Speaker 3: say that's where you put like your bonus draft alone. Okay, yeah,
- 2:04Speaker 3: so so yeah, just acquiring him for basically nothing, so
- 2:11Speaker 3: you'll see if like the Pirates can help his fastball,
- 2:13Speaker 3: which is his primary pitch and pairs that with a changeup.
- 2:17Speaker 3: But I'm not exactly thinking we just found our brand
- 2:21Speaker 3: new closer or anything. But you know, maybe this is
- 2:25Speaker 3: someone that Bill Murphy can work with and they see
- 2:28Speaker 3: something that they can improve, and maybe that slight improvement
- 2:31Speaker 3: can get him back to where he was in twenty
- 2:33Speaker 3: twenty two. And he had a pretty good year, or
- 2:36Speaker 3: your thoughts on this deal.
- 2:37Speaker 2: Or yeah, I just kind of think it's ironic that
- 2:41Speaker 2: this is how Dennis Santana goes considering this is who
- 2:45Speaker 2: Dennis Santana was when they found him, right, he was
- 2:48Speaker 2: the guy no one else wanted not to be that
- 2:53Speaker 2: harsh for our new palern here, But like that's the reality.
- 2:57Speaker 2: I mean, this guy got dfad by a team that
- 3:01Speaker 2: you know is falling out of the playoff race, and
- 3:03Speaker 2: there's kind of clear and space for him. And and
- 3:06Speaker 2: I'm not saying it's a bad pickup, because as underwhelming
- 3:11Speaker 2: as these numbers look, both above surface and below, it's
- 3:18Speaker 2: still a better alternative than Dennis Santana. He's been that
- 3:21Speaker 2: bad this year, So yeah, I mean overall, I mean,
- 3:25Speaker 2: I think I've expressed expressed how I've enjoyed covering Dennis
- 3:31Speaker 2: and how I think the Pirates gave him every opportunity
- 3:37Speaker 2: that he needed to prove himself and he just didn't.
- 3:40Speaker 3: So yeah, I think he just lost his confidence completely
- 3:46Speaker 3: because he started the year looking great and blew a
- 3:48Speaker 3: save and completely fell apart after that. And so I
- 3:53Speaker 3: hope he figures it out somewhere. I think a change
- 3:55Speaker 3: of scenery could be good. Big fan of Santana's still
- 3:59Speaker 3: tough to see, but yeah, and one little stat on
- 4:03Speaker 3: Ron Marnaccio that I did, like, uh, he can go
- 4:06Speaker 3: multiple innings. He's done that seventeen times this year. So
- 4:10Speaker 3: if you need bulk innings out of the bullpen, that's
- 4:13Speaker 3: another option to go to. But not exactly something that's like,
- 4:17Speaker 3: oh look at this.
- 4:18Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I'm curious to see how they use him.
- 4:22Speaker 2: Santana was throwing in high leverage roles, so excuse me, h.
- 4:28Speaker 1: We're recording early more.
- 4:29Speaker 2: Yeah, you can't tell, but Santana is throwing in high
- 4:33Speaker 2: leverage roles so.
- 4:36Speaker 1: Or it kind of was. Anyway, I don't know if
- 4:39Speaker 1: you're gonna throw this guy in that same.
- 4:41Speaker 3: No, I would think, like, seem yeah.
- 4:43Speaker 2: Yeah, it just seems like they got another reliever without
- 4:47Speaker 2: a distinct role. It's just a whole bunch of arms
- 4:50Speaker 2: that you don't feel confident in. Right exactly, Well, they're
- 4:55Speaker 2: gonna need to have some confidence this week, mister platinum key,
- 4:58Speaker 2: because there are some very big games ahead.
- 5:01Speaker 1: We're going to talk about them coming up after this break.
- 5:05Speaker 4: Todd Father, are you hitting some games this summer.
- 5:07Speaker 5: What's the deal, of course, And it's real simple, Scotty Braun.

- 6:07Speaker 2: All right, Mark This is a big home stand, biggest
- 6:11Speaker 2: one of the years.
- 6:12Speaker 1: You look at it, biggest.
- 6:13Speaker 2: One, and I think a long time, and I feel
- 6:16Speaker 2: like I've said that a couple times on this show,
- 6:17Speaker 2: but this one, the Pirates season will be different, yes,
- 6:24Speaker 2: for better or for worse, by the end of this
- 6:28Speaker 2: home stand. They start it today, we're recording the morning
- 6:31Speaker 2: of July twenty fourth against the Chicago Cubs, a team
- 6:35Speaker 2: that has a four and a half game lead over
- 6:38Speaker 2: them for the top National League wildcard spot. In this series,
- 6:43Speaker 2: you have Jared Jones, Paul Skins, and Braxton Ashcraft probably
- 6:49Speaker 2: your hottest pitcher on the team, and then your.
- 6:52Speaker 1: Two all stars on the mound. So that's a pretty
- 6:57Speaker 1: big setup there.
- 6:59Speaker 2: And then after the Cubs leave, you have the Arizona
- 7:02Speaker 2: Diamondbacks coming into town for a three game set. The
- 7:06Speaker 2: Arizona Diamondbacks are currently one game ahead of the Pirates
- 7:08Speaker 2: for the final wildcard spot.
- 7:11Speaker 1: And I mean, I know you remember it.
- 7:16Speaker 2: The last time these two teams played a very meaningful
- 7:18Speaker 2: series of Pancy Park, it was a couple of years
- 7:21Speaker 2: ago around this exact same time, so and that obviously
- 7:25Speaker 2: did not go well. So you look at it, Mark,
- 7:29Speaker 2: I mean what are you hoping to see? Let's start
- 7:31Speaker 2: with this Cub series. What are you hoping to see?
- 7:34Speaker 3: You gotta get two wins. You just have to. With
- 7:37Speaker 3: this starting rotation that the Pirates are pitching against the Cubs,
- 7:41Speaker 3: I mean I almost feel like you I want like
- 7:45Speaker 3: a sweep. Obviously, I don't think that's too out of
- 7:48Speaker 3: the question, because I think both the Cubs and Diamondbacks
- 7:53Speaker 3: are teams that this Pirates team is set up to beat.
- 7:57Speaker 3: Match well, yeah, these are the two top defensive teams
- 8:01Speaker 3: and they rely on their defense, and so if you
- 8:04Speaker 3: can't play defense when like as Berlin Valdez a saying
- 8:07Speaker 3: home run or when Nick and Zalez the Saint balls
- 8:10Speaker 3: in the gap, your defense doesn't matter. So I feel
- 8:13Speaker 3: like the Pirates matchup against these teams well, not like
- 8:16Speaker 3: they're pitching. Is either team has pitching that's like too
- 8:19Speaker 3: crazy right now. Cubs are really banged up. So I
- 8:24Speaker 3: think if you take if you go four and to
- 8:26Speaker 3: this home stand, that is massive and anything better than that.
- 8:31Speaker 3: You're feeling really confident after this, and I think that's
- 8:35Speaker 3: achievable because I really do believe in this team. I
- 8:39Speaker 3: think they're getting hot at the right time, even if
- 8:41Speaker 3: we're talking after a tough loss, as my cat jumps
- 8:44Speaker 3: up here. But yeah, what about you, what are you?
- 8:48Speaker 3: What are you looking for this series?
- 8:50Speaker 6: Yeah?
- 8:50Speaker 2: I mean I agree with what you said there. It's
- 8:53Speaker 2: you gotta go for in too. You gotta win both series.
- 8:56Speaker 2: It even if because like if you sweep the Cubs,
- 8:58Speaker 2: but then you go one and two against the Diamondbacks,
- 9:01Speaker 2: you kind of lose a little bit of ground, yeah,
- 9:04Speaker 2: or vice versa, like if you get swept and then
- 9:06Speaker 2: you see, like you gotta come out with a better
- 9:12Speaker 2: record than you came in.
- 9:13Speaker 1: Yeah, overall, like.
- 9:14Speaker 2: You going three and three, if you go five hundred
- 9:17Speaker 2: on the road for the rest of the year, that's fine.
- 9:21Speaker 2: Five hundred on the road is fine. It just means
- 9:23Speaker 2: you have to have a winning record at home if
- 9:25Speaker 2: you keep adding to your win total and subtracting from
- 9:29Speaker 2: your lost total in your own ballpark and just play
- 9:32Speaker 2: five hundred ball. Because they've been a fine team on
- 9:35Speaker 2: the road all year, you're probably gonna make the playoffs.
- 9:39Speaker 2: But these are the games that you need to win
- 9:41Speaker 2: at home because you look, the rest of their home
- 9:44Speaker 2: competition is very weak. You have the Mets, the Red Sox,
- 9:47Speaker 2: are the hottest team in baseball. But then the Tigers stink,
- 9:50Speaker 2: the Giants aren't good, the Angels. You get one more
- 9:53Speaker 2: series at home against the Cardinals and the Brewers, but
- 9:56Speaker 2: also the Royals, so every other team that I just mentioned.
- 9:59Speaker 2: I mean, you got two playoff teams, three if you
- 10:02Speaker 2: include the Red Sox.
- 10:04Speaker 1: So this is it. This is These are the home games.
- 10:08Speaker 2: These are the most important home games until we get
- 10:11Speaker 2: into late September and the Brewers and the Cardinals play
- 10:15Speaker 2: six of their final nine home games of the year.
- 10:18Speaker 1: This is huge.
- 10:19Speaker 2: So and if I could circle one game, I do
- 10:22Speaker 2: it every time he's on the mound, gotta win the
- 10:24Speaker 2: scene's day. Yep, you're three to zero in his last
- 10:26Speaker 2: three and he's pitching against Shoda, who absolutely owns this team. Yes,
- 10:32Speaker 2: no team, no active pitcher in baseball has better stats.
- 10:37Speaker 2: And I can say that pretty confidently without even looking
- 10:40Speaker 2: at other numbers, just because I've covered so frustration.
- 10:44Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 10:45Speaker 1: Yeah, and Shoda has not been good this year.
- 10:47Speaker 2: He has like a Yeah, he's six and eight with
- 10:49Speaker 2: a three nine to one run average hunter nine strikeouts.
- 10:53Speaker 2: He's gonna pitch well against the Pirates, That's what he
- 10:55Speaker 2: does now. To the Pirates credit, they have have a
- 11:00Speaker 2: lefty masher in their lineup that Showda has yet to face,
- 11:03Speaker 2: So let's see if that adds anything.
- 11:06Speaker 1: But if you win the Scheme's day, you beat Shoda Showda.
- 11:09Speaker 2: The Cubs are going into this series thinking that is
- 11:12Speaker 2: the game that they feel most confident they can win
- 11:15Speaker 2: because of Shoda Monaga. So if you win that game
- 11:18Speaker 2: on Saturday, you win, and then all you gotta do
- 11:21Speaker 2: is win one of the other two.
- 11:22Speaker 1: And Jamison Tywne is a guy who has not pitched.
- 11:25Speaker 2: Weelve against the Pirates, and you get him on the
- 11:27Speaker 2: bump Sunday against Braxton or Jared Jones tonight.
- 11:31Speaker 1: Like this is again we set it for the.
- 11:35Speaker 2: Last home stand, especially like the Brewers series, it was like,
- 11:38Speaker 2: this is the this is the pitching setup that you
- 11:40Speaker 2: would want, right right, this is the exact pitching.
- 11:44Speaker 1: Setup that you're gonna want. You're probably gonna.
- 11:45Speaker 3: Get Jared Jones twice this month, maybe, yeah, like if
- 11:48Speaker 3: they make the playoffs, not in the same order, no, yeah,
- 11:50Speaker 3: but yeah, those three are gonna be the top for
- 11:52Speaker 3: it right now. Maybe not with Bubba Chandler coming into
- 11:55Speaker 3: his own, but yeah.
- 11:57Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, it's it's exciting. I mean, so, I guess
- 12:03Speaker 2: before we wrap this up in these six games, who
- 12:08Speaker 2: needs to be their best player?
- 12:09Speaker 5: Oh?
- 12:11Speaker 3: You know a guy who was one of their best
- 12:14Speaker 3: players and hasn't been lately. I'm gonna say Brandon Law
- 12:19Speaker 3: really really needs to step it up. He's been struggling lately.
- 12:24Speaker 3: And if they can get his bat back hot again,
- 12:28Speaker 3: because we've seen what he can do where I mean,
- 12:31Speaker 3: how many two home run games has he had this year?
- 12:34Speaker 3: I think it's like three or four already. So if
- 12:36Speaker 3: we can get at home yeah, and if we can
- 12:38Speaker 3: have another one of those just big low performances, that
- 12:42Speaker 3: would be massive.
- 12:44Speaker 1: What about you, I'm gonna go Valdez. They've faced two
- 12:48Speaker 1: leftiest the first few days of this series. That's you need.
- 12:52Speaker 2: You need him to show up, and I mean, to
- 12:55Speaker 2: his credit, like he has almost exclusively showed up.
- 12:58Speaker 1: That's all. Yeah, So keep riding that hot hand.
- 13:02Speaker 2: We need to see the lefty masher mash some lefties
- 13:06Speaker 2: if this team is going to.
- 13:08Speaker 1: Gain some ground.
- 13:09Speaker 2: So we're gonna take another quick break when we come back.
- 13:13Speaker 2: We will wrap up today's show with our weekly Friday segment.

- 14:52Speaker 7: Want playday Hevy? What do you say?
- 15:06Speaker 8: All Right, here we go. This week's j HA Now
- 15:08Speaker 8: segment is going to highlight none other than Jacob Gonzales.
- 15:13Speaker 8: You know, we we've we've talked about, you know, Jacob
- 15:16Speaker 8: a little bit, just about the acquisition of you know,
- 15:19Speaker 8: we needed to address something when Conor got hurt and
- 15:22Speaker 8: here he is, and you know, like his first week action,
- 15:24Speaker 8: I think he's got a ops, like a thousand, uh,
- 15:27Speaker 8: I think two home runs and playing all shortstops. So
- 15:31Speaker 8: filling the void of what you know was the major
- 15:35Speaker 8: attention once you know, Connor got hurt, so has has
- 15:38Speaker 8: stepped in and as I said, man, he was playing
- 15:41Speaker 8: a little bit of first base I think with the
- 15:42Speaker 8: White Sox. So a guy that yeah, yeah, so, a
- 15:47Speaker 8: guy that's you know, played a few other positions just
- 15:49Speaker 8: you know, looking for an opportunity. And you know, within
- 15:52Speaker 8: his first week has made his presence felt and uh
- 15:56Speaker 8: it's been nice to see and uh, you know it'll
- 15:59Speaker 8: be you know, pretty cool to see what happens, you know,
- 16:01Speaker 8: with his first home stand coming up, because you know,
- 16:03Speaker 8: I think he opened up on the road, so you know,
- 16:06Speaker 8: pretty cool. And you know, I wanted to highlight somebody
- 16:10Speaker 8: one different and too. You know, he's been here for
- 16:12Speaker 8: a short amount of time and as you know, has
- 16:15Speaker 8: some big hits. So kudos to Jacob Gonzalez and keep
- 16:18Speaker 8: it rolling, man.
- 16:19Speaker 3: Yeah. Only seventeen at bats with the Pirates so far
- 16:21Speaker 3: for Jacob Gonzalez, and he's really left an impact. And
- 16:26Speaker 3: I'll be really interested to see how the Pirates utilize
- 16:29Speaker 3: him once Connor returns here coming up in September, because
- 16:35Speaker 3: he does have that utility aspect to his game where
- 16:38Speaker 3: he can play just about anywhere in the infield and
- 16:42Speaker 3: like the corner outfield. So having that kind of flexibility
- 16:46Speaker 3: is going to be really really nice once Connor takes
- 16:49Speaker 3: short stop back over and you never know. I mean,
- 16:52Speaker 3: we've seen plenty of injuries this year already, so having
- 16:55Speaker 3: a guy that can fill in anywhere, you know, even
- 16:58Speaker 3: if it's like we have like both O'Hearn, like O'Hearn
- 17:02Speaker 3: goes down and we still have Horwitz out, you know,
- 17:05Speaker 3: you got your first basement right there. So it's valuable, yes, yes,
- 17:09Speaker 3: And I mean it's it is only seventeen at bats
- 17:12Speaker 3: with the one thousand ohps, but he's doing a multitude
- 17:15Speaker 3: of ways. He's batting two ninety four and having good
- 17:19Speaker 3: at bats. He just looks like a ballplayer. The defense
- 17:22Speaker 3: has been I mean, I can't think of anything to
- 17:26Speaker 3: say negatively about it. It's just been really really good
- 17:29Speaker 3: to watch. So I think that's a great jahy Now
- 17:32Speaker 3: pick because he has just kind of he's easy to
- 17:35Speaker 3: fly under the raider radar. You know, he's not like
- 17:38Speaker 3: the s Maryland Valdez, you know, mashing homers everywhere, Jake Maingham,
- 17:42Speaker 3: flying with his hair like on fire, like we've mentioned
- 17:45Speaker 3: in the past times. But this is a guy that
- 17:48Speaker 3: is really going to help this team continue to win,
- 17:52Speaker 3: especially in this playoff stretch. So I know a lot
- 17:55Speaker 3: of people wanted to, you know, get more bullpen help earlier,
- 17:59Speaker 3: but I think addressing this knee with Jacob Gonzalez really
- 18:02Speaker 3: helped with this road trip because we already saw what
- 18:05Speaker 3: he can bring with that solid defense and then the
- 18:09Speaker 3: bat as well. So yep, great timing. I'm glad they
- 18:12Speaker 3: got shortstop addressed first, and uh yeah, I think that's
- 18:17Speaker 3: a wonderful ja Hey Now segment. Do you have anything
- 18:20Speaker 3: to cap this one off? Josh?
- 18:24Speaker 8: No, As you said, you know, cover short stop and
