Latest / Hurdle with Emily Abbate / 5-MINUTE FRIDAY: The First Step To Getting What You Want
Transcript
- 0:20Speaker 1: Hey, everybody, Emily Abadi here you are listening to five
- 0:24Speaker 1: Minute Friday from Hurdle.
- 0:26Speaker 2: Good morning, good afternoon, good evening.
- 0:29Speaker 1: I have been thinking a lot about something I saw
- 0:32Speaker 1: a couple of weeks ago, and I wish that I
- 0:35Speaker 1: remember where I saw it. But the concept is, if
- 0:38Speaker 1: you are incapable of articulating what it is that you want,
- 0:43Speaker 1: then you don't get to get it. So it makes sense, right,
- 0:49Speaker 1: I wrote down at one point, or came up with
- 0:52Speaker 1: the concept at one point that I wanted to start
- 0:54Speaker 1: a podcast. I didn't just sit down behind a microphone
- 0:58Speaker 1: one day and start podcasting and voila, here we are.
- 1:03Speaker 1: I had to sit down and get very granular about
- 1:07Speaker 1: what it was that I wanted to create. And this
- 1:10Speaker 1: is just one example of writing down or concepting or
- 1:15Speaker 1: ideating the thing that you are after. Now, the problem
- 1:22Speaker 1: is that often times we and I'm not trying to
- 1:27Speaker 1: generalize here, but I feel like it's okay, you get it.
- 1:31Speaker 1: We underestimate ourselves or we don't think big enough. And
- 1:35Speaker 1: that's what I've really been thinking about this week, and
- 1:39Speaker 1: drawing some parallels actually to times in my life where
- 1:42Speaker 1: I surprised myself and realized that I was god underestimating myself.
- 1:49Speaker 1: Case in point, when I ran the Chicago Marathon in
- 1:53Speaker 1: twenty nineteen. I had a certain goal that felt like
- 1:57Speaker 1: a reach for me. But what I ended up doing
- 2:01Speaker 1: was surpassing that goal and accomplishing something that I never
- 2:06Speaker 1: even aimed for. I never even saw it out. That
- 2:10Speaker 1: experience then instilled in me the benefit of thinking and
- 2:15Speaker 1: dreaming big. Then I started to really get clear on
- 2:21Speaker 1: writing down, maybe even what felt like manifesting the things
- 2:26Speaker 1: that excited me.
- 2:28Speaker 2: And so fast forward a handful of years.
- 2:31Speaker 1: Last year, I was keen on going to Paris and
- 2:35Speaker 1: working during the Olympics.
- 2:37Speaker 2: I didn't know what it was going to look like.
- 2:39Speaker 1: I had some ideas, but I didn't put myself into
- 2:42Speaker 1: a certain box. I kept it abstract. I had a
- 2:46Speaker 1: big goal. I wasn't afraid to set it, and by
- 2:50Speaker 1: doing that, I would argue that I was able to
- 2:55Speaker 1: obtain it because I dared to dream it. Now, of course,
- 2:59Speaker 1: there is some research that talks about the benefit of
- 3:02Speaker 1: setting what might feel like unattainable goals. I am all
- 3:06Speaker 1: about going after the things that are manageable, that are smart,
- 3:10Speaker 1: that acronym and makes sense for you. But if you
- 3:14Speaker 1: think about it, when you set an unattainable goal, that
- 3:18Speaker 1: can lead to higher achievements. So if you maybe at
- 3:23Speaker 1: one point thought that a goal was unattainable, later on
- 3:26Speaker 1: when you reflect, you could realize if I didn't attempt
- 3:30Speaker 1: that goal, I would have achieved a lot less than
- 3:32Speaker 1: what I have now.
- 3:33Speaker 2: So I'm better off for trying.
- 3:35Speaker 1: And that is the mindset that I'm approaching this chat,
- 3:40Speaker 1: this lesson with here. The secret sauce to all of
- 3:45Speaker 1: this is truly going to be how do you react
- 3:50Speaker 1: to what you may perceive in the moment as a
- 3:53Speaker 1: and I'm using air quotes failure. Right, You cannot get
- 3:58Speaker 1: so down on yourself if you are shooting for the
- 4:01Speaker 1: moon and you land amongst the stars, and I know
- 4:03Speaker 1: that is something that sounds super cheesy, right, But if
- 4:07Speaker 1: you go after something that excites you and makes you
- 4:10Speaker 1: feel that fire within you, that is something within itself
- 4:15Speaker 1: to be proud of. And that is why I say,
- 4:19Speaker 1: don't be afraid to dream big, don't dwell on your
- 4:22Speaker 1: quote unquote failures, celebrate your small winds along the way,
- 4:28Speaker 1: and think about all of the benefits that you get
- 4:31Speaker 1: when you chase your own potential. And when you recognize
- 4:35Speaker 1: that there is so much within you that is excitable
- 4:38Speaker 1: and awesome and wonderful and worth celebrating.
- 4:42Speaker 2: There I said it, I'm here.
- 4:44Speaker 1: I'm here to be your hype human today, knowing that
- 4:47Speaker 1: every day when you get up it doesn't feel always
- 4:50Speaker 1: easy or natural or convenient to approach your day to
- 4:55Speaker 1: day with this level of self belief. But it's like
- 4:59Speaker 1: a muscle. Well I say it all the time. You
- 5:02Speaker 1: have to work on it, you have to strengthen it.
- 5:04Speaker 1: That is how you build resiliency, that is how you
- 5:08Speaker 1: build mental toughness. And by setting these lofty goals, you
- 5:12Speaker 1: have the opportunity to do something really, really special. And
- 5:17Speaker 1: so my question for you this beautiful day is what
- 5:22Speaker 1: do you want? It sounds simple, I know, but it
- 5:25Speaker 1: starts here. It starts by you being in a place
- 5:31Speaker 1: where you are willing to get a little outside of
- 5:36Speaker 1: your comfort zone to dream big, to be your own
- 5:40Speaker 1: biggest fan. Again, the question for you this week what
- 5:45Speaker 1: do you want? And now a listener question now of note,
- 5:51Speaker 1: this one came in over DM. So although I love
- 5:55Speaker 1: it when you email the questions to Hello at Hurdle
- 5:58Speaker 1: dot us, you can feel free to reach out to
- 6:01Speaker 1: us over on Instagram as well via dms over at
- 6:06Speaker 1: Hurdle podcast. The question what is one simple wellness tip
- 6:11Speaker 1: you'd recommend for someone who feels like they don't have
- 6:14Speaker 1: time to prioritize themselves?
- 6:17Speaker 2: Oh my god, I have so been here when.
- 6:19Speaker 1: Work just feels like overwhelming their stuff going on in
- 6:23Speaker 1: your personal life. Maybe someone that you care about is
- 6:25Speaker 1: navigating something sticky, Maybe you're navigating something sticky.
- 6:29Speaker 2: Yeah, I get it, I've been there.
- 6:31Speaker 1: So the question a simple tip you'd recommend for someone
- 6:34Speaker 1: who feels like they don't have time to prioritize themselves.
- 6:38Speaker 1: You have to do something small, so it's not like
- 6:41Speaker 1: if you feel like you don't have time being so
- 6:45Speaker 1: strict and saying if I don't do a thirty minute
- 6:48Speaker 1: or forty five minute or hour long workout, it doesn't count,
- 6:52Speaker 1: Like that's not the attitude. Just like you can have
- 6:55Speaker 1: a snack in the middle of the day.
- 6:58Speaker 2: That's food.
- 6:59Speaker 1: You can take the time to snack and move your body.
- 7:03Speaker 1: So something that is you prioritizing yourself is truly just
- 7:07Speaker 1: taking five minutes to walk around the block and take
- 7:12Speaker 1: a few deep breaths. So maybe do a few rounds
- 7:14Speaker 1: of box, breath, something else that's prioritizing yourself. And this
- 7:18Speaker 1: can take literally thirty seconds when you sit down to
- 7:21Speaker 1: your desk at the beginning of the workday. If that
- 7:23Speaker 1: is something that you do and you have a desk job,
- 7:27Speaker 1: write down one thing that you're grateful for. That might
- 7:29Speaker 1: even only take you, gosh, sixteen total seconds. But that
- 7:34Speaker 1: small moment of dedication to affirmations positivity, that is something
- 7:40Speaker 1: that is good for your mental health.
- 7:42Speaker 2: That is you giving back to you. Again. I cannot
- 7:45Speaker 2: reiterate this enough.
- 7:46Speaker 1: So often we feel or we should ourselves into these
- 7:49Speaker 1: lengthy routines or something that we see someone else doing
- 7:53Speaker 1: on social media, and it doesn't need to be that way.
- 7:56Speaker 1: You will upkeep anything that is something that a excites
- 8:03Speaker 1: you and b feels manageable for you. In order to
- 8:07Speaker 1: build a habit over time, you have to meet yourself
- 8:11Speaker 1: with where you're at. I give this example often, but
- 8:15Speaker 1: if you want to drink more water, say right now,
- 8:18Speaker 1: you're drinking two glasses of water a day and you
- 8:20Speaker 1: want to drink something like eight. Before you set the
- 8:23Speaker 1: goal of drinking eight glasses a day, it would be
- 8:27Speaker 1: better to meet yourself with where you're at and start
- 8:29Speaker 1: drinking four. Four is aspirational for someone who drinks too.
- 8:34Speaker 1: Eight is aspirational for someone who drinks four. You're following me.
- 8:38Speaker 1: I know that you are. So if you feel like
- 8:41Speaker 1: you don't have the time the energy to give back
- 8:43Speaker 1: to yourself, ask this important foundational question, where am I
- 8:50Speaker 1: right now? And what is something that I can do
- 8:53Speaker 1: for myself that makes me feel good? That's me filling
- 8:56Speaker 1: up my cup that takes five minutes or less instead
- 9:01Speaker 1: of shooting yourself into some lengthy routine that's just not
- 9:06Speaker 1: currently obtainable.
- 9:07Speaker 2: And also recognize this.
- 9:08Speaker 1: Oftentimes, these moments that we feel as though, these circumstances
- 9:13Speaker 1: where we don't feel like we have the bandwidth the
- 9:16Speaker 1: energy to prioritize ourselves, they don't last forever. So know
- 9:20Speaker 1: that maybe this is just a season, and it is
- 9:24Speaker 1: a season that you have the tenacity, the grit, the
- 9:27Speaker 1: strength to not only get through, but truly hurdle over.
- 9:32Speaker 2: Wow.
- 9:32Speaker 1: I really came in hot today with the inspirational takes
- 9:36Speaker 1: and you're welcome. I am thinking about all of you,
- 9:40Speaker 1: and again I want your listener questions, so DM email
- 9:44Speaker 1: whatever feels.
