Transcript
- 0:06Speaker 1: Hello, and welcome to the Overland Journal podcast. I'm your host,
- 0:10Speaker 1: Scott Brady, and I'm joined today by my co host
- 0:12Speaker 1: Matt Scott. Now, I've got a little bit of a cold,
- 0:16Speaker 1: not only on this intro but during the conversation itself,
- 0:19Speaker 1: so we apologize and advance for that. But we are
- 0:22Speaker 1: talking about a very cool vehicle, which is the Nios Grenadier.
- 0:27Speaker 1: So Matt has recently purchased one on his own without
- 0:31Speaker 1: any support or even knowledge of Nios, and of course
- 0:35Speaker 1: I have driven one across the continent of Africa and
- 0:38Speaker 1: across the continent of Europe without any sponsorship or compensation
- 0:43Speaker 1: from Ineos. So we've learned a lot in our time
- 0:47Speaker 1: owning and driving these vehicles, and we have some insights
- 0:50Speaker 1: into core modifications considerations around the various build sets, so
- 0:56Speaker 1: you can know what is the best models or individual
- 0:59Speaker 1: options that you may want to consider. Just how good
- 1:02Speaker 1: this vehicle is with little or no modifications, and we
- 1:06Speaker 1: talk a little bit about the competition. We talk a
- 1:08Speaker 1: little bit about some of the challenges that the vehicle has,
- 1:12Speaker 1: which are few, but the challenges are a little more
- 1:15Speaker 1: apparent because the rest of the vehicle is so good.
- 1:18Speaker 1: So this is a very open, frank conversation about one
- 1:21Speaker 1: of the most important new models to come into overlanding
- 1:24Speaker 1: in decades. So, Matt, we're going to talk about Grenadeer's today,
- 1:31Speaker 1: which is fun. I've got a little bit of a cold,
- 1:33Speaker 1: so my apologies too. I'm going to have a little
- 1:35Speaker 1: bit of a cold tomorrow. But these are the things
- 1:37Speaker 1: that we do for our listeners.
- 1:41Speaker 2: That's right, We're not going to share the same mic. Yeah, yeah,
- 1:45Speaker 2: So we're talking about the Grenadier. You're driving a Quartermaster
- 1:48Speaker 2: and I randomly bought a Grenadier, yeah, which I have
- 1:53Speaker 2: actually been enjoying, and that is the podcast.
- 1:58Speaker 1: It's so it's so like we have to kind of
- 2:01Speaker 1: start the podcast with like we both really enjoy the vehicles.
- 2:05Speaker 1: And it's important to note that, like the one that
- 2:08Speaker 1: you're driving, you did not contact anios, You did not
- 2:11Speaker 1: they have none. You paid, you paid, well, they know,
- 2:14Speaker 1: but they didn't know when you bought it. Yeah they
- 2:17Speaker 1: know now, but like you know, you went and spent
- 2:20Speaker 1: your own money on it. Yeah, I got the car.
- 2:23Speaker 2: I traded my my my prospector for it, which is
- 2:27Speaker 2: maybe a little bit of a weird move, but I
- 2:29Speaker 2: was tired of driving something that was so enormous. Yeah, yeah,
- 2:34Speaker 2: just with how you need a daily driver. Yeah, like
- 2:36Speaker 2: I couldn't. Like we live in Prescott and we have
- 2:39Speaker 2: this this little hodyllic town square and long of my dog.
- 2:42Speaker 2: There often one I couldn't lift my eighty pound Greyhound
- 2:46Speaker 2: into the car because it was too tall. The Mega
- 2:48Speaker 2: I got a Megacab and it was just you know,
- 2:51Speaker 2: it doesn't fit in those spots. It doesn't fit in
- 2:53Speaker 2: the spots. And the way the fold flat but were
- 2:57Speaker 2: the way the seats fold down is considerably higher than
- 3:00Speaker 2: the standard cab. Oh gotcha. And the turning radius was
- 3:03Speaker 2: just weird and I should and I should have listened
- 3:07Speaker 2: to Dave harretone. So you got a grened here because
- 3:11Speaker 2: you didn't like the steering turning radius on your on
- 3:13Speaker 2: your ram.
- 3:14Speaker 1: And they're about to say, I'll talk about that a
- 3:17Speaker 1: little bit later. But I think I think the key
- 3:19Speaker 1: is is that I've never been paid by Anios to
- 3:24Speaker 1: use these vehicles. We have gotten test vehicles from them
- 3:29Speaker 1: because we are we just really believe that this is
- 3:31Speaker 1: such a unique opportunity for there to be an entirely
- 3:35Speaker 1: new car company that its sole focus is to make
- 3:39Speaker 1: over land vehicles.
- 3:40Speaker 2: Yeah, so considerably significant.
- 3:42Speaker 1: So it's actually one of the things that I was
- 3:44Speaker 1: most disappointed about from the media. Even before they ever
- 3:49Speaker 1: had a chance to drive the vehicle, people were being
- 3:52Speaker 1: super negative. And it's like, how often in a lifetime
- 3:55Speaker 1: you get to experience a new enthusiast car company, Like
- 3:58Speaker 1: give them a chance, give them a chance, and then
- 4:01Speaker 1: actually test the vehicle properly and then give your opinion.
- 4:05Speaker 1: So I just think that for me, my goal was
- 4:08Speaker 1: to test the vehicle properly and how we test vehicles
- 4:11Speaker 1: as we cross continents with them. So we were fortunate
- 4:15Speaker 1: that Inios was willing to give me unit number three
- 4:19Speaker 1: hundred and seventy two, throw me the keys, put it
- 4:22Speaker 1: under my name, and give me a carne to take
- 4:25Speaker 1: it across Africa, which is pretty cool. Yeah, super cool.
- 4:28Speaker 1: So we were really able to give it a throw
- 4:31Speaker 1: I would say abuse. I mean some of the road
- 4:33Speaker 1: conditions were really abusive. I'm always mindful of my vehicle
- 4:38Speaker 1: because my personal safety relies on me getting to where
- 4:40Speaker 1: I need to go, but I certainly wasn't gentle on it. Yeah,
- 4:44Speaker 1: and then we shifted it from Africa to Europe and
- 4:47Speaker 1: drove it across Europe and I turned the keys back
- 4:50Speaker 1: in and it didn't even have a door dag, so
- 4:52Speaker 1: it's possible. And it was also stock. That was one
- 4:54Speaker 1: of the things that I really thought would be interesting
- 4:57Speaker 1: because I've never done that before. I've always either bought
- 5:01Speaker 1: vehicles or been given long term loaner vehicles and then
- 5:04Speaker 1: modified them.
- 5:05Speaker 2: Yeah, and I was like, let's see what this thing
- 5:08Speaker 2: will do. Well. A lot of a lot of the
- 5:10Speaker 2: industry that we work in is predicated on the aftermarket. Right.
- 5:15Speaker 2: For a long time, manufacturers did not make vehicles that
- 5:19Speaker 2: out of the box could do what we needed them
- 5:21Speaker 2: to do. So at a minimum, you needed you know,
- 5:24Speaker 2: it's not that you needed a lift, you just needed
- 5:26Speaker 2: springs that were a little bit better for load carrying,
- 5:30Speaker 2: or even the tires a little bit better. I remember
- 5:33Speaker 2: when and you were probably here that day when we
- 5:36Speaker 2: got the BDJ seventy eights for expedition set. Oh yeah,
- 5:42Speaker 2: I remember them coming in. They came here to Prescott.
- 5:44Speaker 2: I remember taking them with the Toyota dealer.
- 5:46Speaker 1: Yes, and we decided to get some content on them stock.
- 5:53Speaker 2: Now, they had tubed tires and they had these like
- 5:57Speaker 2: crazy commercial tires on there, but like they just they
- 6:02Speaker 2: just don't have a lot of articulation. The tires were terrible,
- 6:04Speaker 2: and I remember trying to take it up this little
- 6:07Speaker 2: obstacle over in the Dells that was the day before
- 6:12Speaker 2: was done by like a like a Mitsubishi band, Like
- 6:16Speaker 2: what was that name of that cool couple from Spain
- 6:19Speaker 2: that like, oh they had it was it was a Delica.
- 6:21Speaker 1: Delica Yeah, yeah, right, yeah, yeah, they had a Delica
- 6:24Speaker 1: and like they did the obstacle like with and this
- 6:27Speaker 1: is I ended up needing both lockers.
- 6:29Speaker 2: I mean it had those things had like five horsepower
- 6:34Speaker 2: and little Fisher Price wheels, that's right, but I needed
- 6:37Speaker 2: I ended.
- 6:37Speaker 1: Up needing two lockers in this land Cruiser to finally
- 6:40Speaker 1: get up and over the obstacle. And what it what
- 6:43Speaker 1: it tells me is like there, even though we see
- 6:46Speaker 1: these Pinnacle vehicles, these iconic vehicles as X when they're modified,
- 6:52Speaker 1: they really are. It's really good to try things out
- 6:54Speaker 1: when they're stock.
- 6:56Speaker 2: I remember not being able to drive over a curb
- 6:58Speaker 2: in that car and then having to put it in
- 7:01Speaker 2: low range as I killed it. And I was like
- 7:03Speaker 2: twenty one at the time. I'm like, oh my god,
- 7:06Speaker 2: I killed this thing. Like the good thing with the
- 7:09Speaker 2: land Cruisers, you really can't break up. But this is
- 7:12Speaker 2: the first car that I really haven't like had a
- 7:16Speaker 2: an England to modify, like like I look, so I
- 7:20Speaker 2: am it is. I am that guy. Like I know
- 7:23Speaker 2: that I preached that you don't need to, but I
- 7:25Speaker 2: I do enjoy, you know, messing with cars, you know,
- 7:30Speaker 2: but I just like, I'm so content with this vehicle
- 7:34Speaker 2: the way it is. Yeah, you know, I I'm going
- 7:38Speaker 2: to do some stuff on the interior, but which is
- 7:42Speaker 2: what I did.
- 7:42Speaker 1: I mean, I needed a way to sleep on the inside. Yeah,
- 7:45Speaker 1: I did set up a and I wanted a fridge,
- 7:47Speaker 1: so I did put a fridge in there.
- 7:49Speaker 2: I just I just ordered one of the Goose gear systems.
- 7:52Speaker 2: I'm not doing the full rear delete because I want
- 7:56Speaker 2: to have the back seats because we're downsizing our cars
- 7:58Speaker 2: so you can travel more and I want to I
- 8:01Speaker 2: want to have a car that's semi practical. You got
- 8:05Speaker 2: friends come over, you want to go? Yeah, yeah, exactly.
- 8:07Speaker 2: So I'm doing just like the it has one drawer
- 8:10Speaker 2: and then it has a demetic drawer. Fridge interesting on
- 8:14Speaker 2: the on the right side. And then I'm doing like
- 8:16Speaker 2: a little GP factor table because it's really cool. But
- 8:20Speaker 2: after that, I'm like, hum like, I'm good, like I
- 8:25Speaker 2: you know, I did some metal and.
- 8:26Speaker 1: Seat covers, I guess, but yeah, and and the seat
- 8:29Speaker 1: covers for me were a plus on the vehicle for
- 8:33Speaker 1: Africa because it was leather.
- 8:35Speaker 2: Yeah, and I have either. I think that the.
- 8:37Speaker 1: Melville Moon is a huge step up. Curiously, and this
- 8:42Speaker 1: is just my take on it is the stock non
- 8:45Speaker 1: leather seats I actually prefer. Yeah, they have like a
- 8:49Speaker 1: nice texture to them, but it also suits the car.
- 8:53Speaker 2: More it does, I think. So now the nice thing
- 8:55Speaker 2: like I have.
- 8:57Speaker 1: I have the cloth seats in the quarter mast, and
- 9:00Speaker 1: I have the Melville and Moon seat covers.
- 9:03Speaker 2: And I like the Melville Moon because it does like
- 9:06Speaker 2: add a little bit of little well my Safari cosplay
- 9:09Speaker 2: a little. It's a little I have the spare tire
- 9:12Speaker 2: hair cover and it's like a lion proof. Yeah. And
- 9:16Speaker 2: I also haul stuff around Like in a four door truck,
- 9:18Speaker 2: you end up using the back seat quite a bit, Yeah,
- 9:21Speaker 2: because there's times you don't want things to get stolen
- 9:23Speaker 2: or fly out of the back, so I end up
- 9:25Speaker 2: actually using your luggage goes. You go to the airport
- 9:29Speaker 2: exactly whatever.
- 9:29Speaker 1: I put quite a bit of utility into that back seat,
- 9:32Speaker 1: so I'm glad that I've got the seat covers on it.
- 9:35Speaker 1: And the other thing that is a win for the
- 9:38Speaker 1: seat covers is there's no there's no pocket. Yeah, there's
- 9:42Speaker 1: no pocket.
- 9:43Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 9:44Speaker 1: So and with the Melville and Moon, which maybe I
- 9:47Speaker 1: mean there's other great seat cover companies to like escape
- 9:50Speaker 1: gear and stuff. I don't know if those are made
- 9:52Speaker 1: for the escape gear does do okay. So, but one
- 9:55Speaker 1: of the things that I think is an advantage of
- 9:58Speaker 1: the seat cover and I'm only speaking to.
- 10:00Speaker 2: The Melville Moon because it's the only one I.
- 10:02Speaker 1: Have experienced with, but it has these cool little side
- 10:05Speaker 1: pockets and I use that for the Winch remote, so.
- 10:09Speaker 2: The Winch remote always lives in that little spot.
- 10:12Speaker 1: And then like for example, in crossing Africa, like I
- 10:16Speaker 1: had one side that I kept all the maps in,
- 10:19Speaker 1: which was the back of the passenger seat. I could
- 10:24Speaker 1: reach in and grab it. And then behind the driver's
- 10:27Speaker 1: seat is where I kept all the documents. So I'd
- 10:29Speaker 1: keep the carna and I'd keep all that stuff. And
- 10:32Speaker 1: it's a very deep pocket because there's not a lot
- 10:35Speaker 1: of storage, no in that car, and I do believe
- 10:38Speaker 1: that they intend to address some of that because even
- 10:43Speaker 1: the storage that throughout this podcast, we're just going to
- 10:47Speaker 1: be really unfiltered because we have between you and I,
- 10:49Speaker 1: we have an enormous amount of time.
- 10:51Speaker 2: In these vehicles.
- 10:52Speaker 1: So it's going to sound at times that we're being
- 10:54Speaker 1: a little critical, But it's only because I've spent a
- 10:56Speaker 1: year and a half living in one and I'm driven
- 10:58Speaker 1: as Starbucks doesn't now you use it. I don't go
- 11:02Speaker 1: to Well, let's be honest. If I don't go to Starbucks,
- 11:04Speaker 1: you go to Method Coffee. Method Coffee. That's right exactly,
- 11:07Speaker 1: which hey Joseph, and Joseph who owns Method Coffee has
- 11:11Speaker 1: a greditor.
- 11:11Speaker 2: Yeah, Chila drives Itchila drives it every day. Yeah, I
- 11:14Speaker 2: think so. Yeah, you're right. The storage is off, like
- 11:16Speaker 2: the the glove box is impossibly small. I'd like to
- 11:20Speaker 2: go back to kind of the general media approach to
- 11:25Speaker 2: this vehicle. We were talking earlier, like it is really
- 11:28Speaker 2: negative and I like you kind of said it, and
- 11:32Speaker 2: I just I had just really let it sink in,
- 11:35Speaker 2: like it seemed like a lot of people wanted this,
- 11:38Speaker 2: this car to fail. Yeah, and I don't I don't
- 11:43Speaker 2: really get it, like it's it's I mean, it's not perfect, right,
- 11:47Speaker 2: but you know, neither are a lot of vehicles like
- 11:51Speaker 2: Ford's replacing like ninety thousand engines and Broncos like they've
- 11:55Speaker 2: they've they've built a very solid car. There are some
- 11:59Speaker 2: things that need to be fine tuned on it. But
- 12:01Speaker 2: it's funny, like obviously we both have a lot of
- 12:03Speaker 2: friends that are, you know, car writers, and when I
- 12:09Speaker 2: told a few of them that I bought a grinder,
- 12:11Speaker 2: Oh why would you do that? They're horrible and they
- 12:14Speaker 2: drove it like ten feet right, you know, and god like.
- 12:18Speaker 2: And it's also it's it's the same thing with I'm
- 12:21Speaker 2: going to say this, it's the same it's the same thing.
- 12:23Speaker 2: It's the same response that I got with like the Tesla.
- 12:26Speaker 2: And I think that you know, these a lot of
- 12:30Speaker 2: these people that get whined and dined by these PR people.
- 12:34Speaker 2: And there was two things that I've noticed recently. When
- 12:38Speaker 2: PR people get drunk, they're all scared of Tesla. I'm
- 12:41Speaker 2: going to say scared of Tesla because when you're when
- 12:44Speaker 2: you when you have a couple of drinks and all
- 12:46Speaker 2: you talk about is Teslaea, Like you know, like some
- 12:50Speaker 2: of the land Rover guys, it was the same thing.
- 12:53Speaker 2: All of a sudden, the Enios started coming out because
- 12:56Speaker 2: their narrative for so long was that they couldn't build
- 13:02Speaker 2: a new Defender, right, and then they got we got
- 13:05Speaker 2: this thing that Jerry McGovern gave us, like you know,
- 13:10Speaker 2: like you know, with his pocket square and his cravat.
- 13:15Speaker 2: I mean, it's a poser mobile at this point. And
- 13:17Speaker 2: then here comes this real thing and they like they
- 13:21Speaker 2: feed this stuff to these guys in the same way
- 13:24Speaker 2: that they did with Tesla, and I see so many
- 13:28Speaker 2: core like so many similarities there. The car is not bad.
- 13:32Speaker 2: It is one of the best built vehicles I've ever owned.
- 13:36Speaker 2: I've owned a lot. I've owned seventy series and cruisers.
- 13:39Speaker 2: I've owned eighty series. I've owned every American truck. I
- 13:44Speaker 2: have long term owned multiple wagons. I had a you know,
- 13:48Speaker 2: I didn't own it, but I've driven patrols for months
- 13:50Speaker 2: at a time, like I've it's really well made. They're like,
- 13:53Speaker 2: I'm a I'm a g Wagon guy. But the problem
- 13:56Speaker 2: with the g Wagon really is that they have an
- 13:59Speaker 2: image problem, a reverse signaling issue, like like that's why
- 14:02Speaker 2: I was always so drawn to the G Wagon professional
- 14:07Speaker 2: because it was just more authentic, but the image was
- 14:11Speaker 2: already tainted. And now that there are yeah, like it was,
- 14:16Speaker 2: you know a grant like I had, like a flat
- 14:17Speaker 2: black g Wagon. It looks it looks cool. But then
- 14:20Speaker 2: I also had a diesel manual. You know that thing
- 14:24Speaker 2: was cool. Michael Potterker has it now from Meyers Manx
- 14:27Speaker 2: And this is the g Wagon I always wanted, which
- 14:32Speaker 2: brings me to the Defender thing. I know that the
- 14:36Speaker 2: vehicle was built because they would like land River would
- 14:41Speaker 2: not sell the Defender rights. Yeah, the tooling and everything
- 14:47Speaker 2: else and everything you know to search Jim, but they
- 14:51Speaker 2: ended up building a better G Wagon. And there's so
- 14:54Speaker 2: many components on this down to like the fonts and
- 14:57Speaker 2: the sizes of like the labels that go on things,
- 15:01Speaker 2: to the switches, the size and switches, the way that
- 15:03Speaker 2: the the roof when it joins the body of the vehicle,
- 15:10Speaker 2: or how it is like welded on top with this
- 15:13Speaker 2: like spot Well it's the same thing. Yeah, the little
- 15:16Speaker 2: corner protectors are the same thing. That the handles have
- 15:19Speaker 2: to come from the same supplier. Oh and surprise, surprise,
- 15:22Speaker 2: Magnus Stare is the actually the company that designed this vehicle,
- 15:26Speaker 2: that engineered it, that engineered it. Magna Stare produces the
- 15:30Speaker 2: g Wagon for Mercedes and they also produce the Souper
- 15:33Speaker 2: Rough for Toyota, which is where the BMW Straight six
- 15:38Speaker 2: came from. That's why it's there.
- 15:39Speaker 1: And it's so interesting to me because rant's over. Yeah no, no,
- 15:42Speaker 1: I mean I think that the rant is justifiable. The
- 15:46Speaker 1: first thing that I feel is always important as an
- 15:49Speaker 1: automotive vehicle tester is the vehicle built to purpose.
- 15:54Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 15:55Speaker 1: So where I take real exception in some of the
- 15:59Speaker 1: editorial that I've read is like they didn't realize what
- 16:02Speaker 1: the vehicle was made to do. Like does it drive
- 16:05Speaker 1: the same as a like take your pick, like a
- 16:09Speaker 1: Grand Cherokee.
- 16:10Speaker 2: Of course not. They're very different vehicles. It's literally built
- 16:14Speaker 2: for different reasons. And that's not to take anything away
- 16:18Speaker 2: from a Grand Cherokee, which is a great car, but
- 16:20Speaker 2: they the Grand Cherokee is built for like every day
- 16:23Speaker 2: driving long distances, city commutes. It's minimal there to get
- 16:30Speaker 2: you to work when it's snows.
- 16:31Speaker 1: Yeah, minimal fold drive characteristics, even though they're they're better
- 16:35Speaker 1: than the average, but still, like the Grenadier was built
- 16:39Speaker 1: to drive across Africa. That is what Sir Jim wanted
- 16:42Speaker 1: was a replacement for the Defender that he used to drive. Yeah,
- 16:46Speaker 1: and he's so it was built to drive across Africa.
- 16:50Speaker 1: So if it feels a little stiff in the rear,
- 16:54Speaker 1: it's because it has an eighteen hundred pound payload.
- 16:56Speaker 2: Yep. Yeah, people, I mean it has. There's a reason
- 16:59Speaker 2: for it. It has almost doubles the payload of my prospector. Yeah,
- 17:03Speaker 2: and now like AV has to figure in all of
- 17:06Speaker 2: these things. And you know, I'm not gonna necessarily say
- 17:10Speaker 2: that that's a negative. But it still drives really good.
- 17:14Speaker 2: It's very quiet inside. You know, you get a little
- 17:17Speaker 2: bit of engine noise, but I don't mind that.
- 17:19Speaker 1: You know, it's not you didn't sit more now with
- 17:22Speaker 1: the circle, No, but I haven't the window and just
- 17:26Speaker 1: let that turbot. Yeah, I love it.
- 17:29Speaker 2: I like hearing the turbo. It feels it feels good, right,
- 17:34Speaker 2: And I think that there's like there's a couple different
- 17:36Speaker 2: buyers for this vehicle. There's you know, they are the
- 17:40Speaker 2: people that are buying it to use it. Like my
- 17:42Speaker 2: friend Matt Pryor that I've known for a long time,
- 17:46Speaker 2: he is pulling like a Patriot camper. I mean, he's
- 17:50Speaker 2: like he's going to the countries that like I don't
- 17:53Speaker 2: even know, you know. I mean he's literally in Tajika
- 17:55Speaker 2: standard it right now and he has had zero issues
- 17:59Speaker 2: that he's raising two kids, he's with his wife. I mean,
- 18:03Speaker 2: it is just like the thing has been off road
- 18:07Speaker 2: it's entire life, like he bought it and then just went.
- 18:12Speaker 2: I mean he's a very practical guys, an airline pilot,
- 18:15Speaker 2: used to fly like jets and the Royal air Force.
- 18:18Speaker 2: Really cool guy. You should what what what is his Instagram?
- 18:22Speaker 2: Wild something, wild Earth something? Shoot, Yeah, anyway, we'll put
- 18:26Speaker 2: that in the notes on the podcast completing your rant.
- 18:31Speaker 2: All though, either I just I can't remember these instagram
- 18:34Speaker 2: it is anyways. But for example, he has just like
- 18:37Speaker 2: he's using that, you're using it. So you have that customer, right,
- 18:41Speaker 2: which I'm gonna be honest, is the minority customer. But
- 18:45Speaker 2: that beginning though, yeah, that drove a lot of early sales,
- 18:48Speaker 2: but that's what the that's the dream of the vehicle, right,
- 18:53Speaker 2: and then you have kind of the people that it
- 18:55Speaker 2: were looking for a jeep and they're looking to really
- 18:57Speaker 2: modify it. And I do think that those people are
- 19:00Speaker 2: having some problems with the grand of gear. It's not
- 19:03Speaker 2: meant to be put on thirty seven's and to have
- 19:07Speaker 2: a lot of things done to it, like it's kind
- 19:10Speaker 2: of done, and honestly like it's a like a diminishing
- 19:12Speaker 2: return to buy the vehicle and then to just change
- 19:15Speaker 2: everything for it. You know, those are the vehicle modifying types.
- 19:20Speaker 1: Yeah, and I just haven't found the like for the
- 19:25Speaker 1: quarter Master. It's a longer wheelbase, yeah, so I was
- 19:28Speaker 1: a little more sensitive to break over angle. And then
- 19:31Speaker 1: I have the camper in the back a lot of times.
- 19:34Speaker 1: So I did go with an increased rate of the
- 19:37Speaker 1: spring in the rear. It's still a factory eyebox spring,
- 19:40Speaker 1: but it's a little taller and a little more rate
- 19:43Speaker 1: to it. So I did go with a thirty four
- 19:45Speaker 1: inch diameter tire, and I'm really glad. I'm really it
- 19:49Speaker 1: fits stocked. The front suspension is stock, and I'm really
- 19:52Speaker 1: happy with it. Like it off road, it's great.
- 19:54Speaker 2: Yeah, but you know, let's talk about tire size. One
- 19:58Speaker 2: of the really cool things when you look at like
- 20:00Speaker 2: the Carrillo axles, which there's some peculiarities to them, and
- 20:05Speaker 2: how it was set up. They're all high pinnion axles,
- 20:08Speaker 2: so like the diff pumpkin doesn't sit down lower. So
- 20:12Speaker 2: like in theory, you don't need a larger tire. Like
- 20:16Speaker 2: I'm not saying, you know, it's fun to do this stuff.
- 20:18Speaker 2: I like to do this stuff, but it's the first
- 20:20Speaker 2: vehicle where I've kind of been like huh, Like you know,
- 20:23Speaker 2: like I was at the gym last week and I
- 20:26Speaker 2: parked next to a JK. I'm thirty five with a
- 20:28Speaker 2: little lift, and I'm kind of looking underneath and I'm like,
- 20:31Speaker 2: oh man, the actual ground clearance is pretty similar, pretty similar. Yeah,
- 20:36Speaker 2: And I like the fact that I can, like I
- 20:40Speaker 2: recently got a cost Co membership. I'm a gold Star member.
- 20:43Speaker 2: One day maybe I will be an executive member. But
- 20:47Speaker 2: like you're walking out of costombers, the tires there, the
- 20:51Speaker 2: tire size for my Grenadier is just sitting there, like
- 20:56Speaker 2: you know, so if you had a problem, you know,
- 20:57Speaker 2: that's part of the idea, part of the ethos with
- 21:00Speaker 2: overlanding is it's about the travel. It's you know, you're
- 21:04Speaker 2: not going to find an obscure tire sit That's why
- 21:06Speaker 2: I didn't change the time for Africa, even though I
- 21:09Speaker 2: wanted to just from the looks perspective, but a two
- 21:13Speaker 2: sixty five, seventy or seventeen is what comes on a
- 21:16Speaker 2: high lox. Yeah, it's everywhere. So it's everywhere in Africa.
- 21:19Speaker 2: For need to get a tired you can get that time.
- 21:21Speaker 2: I do. I do want to finish my thing on.
- 21:23Speaker 2: The last group is there's there's definitely a group and
- 21:25Speaker 2: you see them on like these anios Facebook groups and stuff.
- 21:29Speaker 2: It's it's the person that was looking for a G
- 21:32Speaker 2: Wagon or they were looking for a luxury suv. And
- 21:36Speaker 2: I think that people need to make the distinction between
- 21:41Speaker 2: a high quality vehicle that is not luxurious and a
- 21:48Speaker 2: you know, the wagon. The g Wagon is both high
- 21:50Speaker 2: quality and luxurious, which is why it's two hundred and
- 21:53Speaker 2: fifty thousand exactly. But like there's there's people that maybe
- 21:56Speaker 2: should have bought a Defender. The Defender, in my opinion,
- 21:59Speaker 2: is not a quality vehicle. It has a lot of
- 22:02Speaker 2: Like I have several friends that have had to replace
- 22:05Speaker 2: engines they have they have gremlins or they're perfect, you know,
- 22:09Speaker 2: some of them are good, but it's they do cost
- 22:13Speaker 2: roughly the same. And I think people are like, oh,
- 22:16Speaker 2: the interior is very plastic. I'm like yeah, because it's
- 22:19Speaker 2: meant to be used. It doesn't have cheap leather on it.
- 22:23Speaker 2: It holds up. Like at the end of the Africa trip,
- 22:25Speaker 2: like the car looks the same. The scrame is galvanized,
- 22:28Speaker 2: painted and then waxed. All of the body panels are galvanized.
- 22:32Speaker 2: So if you're the type of person that's going to
- 22:33Speaker 2: keep a car for a long time, and God knows
- 22:35Speaker 2: that I am not that person, but I love things,
- 22:38Speaker 2: might be the first. This might be the one. Like
- 22:40Speaker 2: it's it's just really well made and I appreciate. It's
- 22:44Speaker 2: like the difference of buying, like, you know, a Filson
- 22:47Speaker 2: Duffel bag versus buying an Abercrommie and Fitch Duffel bag.
- 22:53Speaker 2: I don't know, ye, Like, I don't know. It's like
- 22:55Speaker 2: something that's trendy and quote unquote luxury, but actually isn't
- 22:59Speaker 2: that well made. It's like it's an air it's like
- 23:03Speaker 2: air loom quality vehicle and you're paying for that and
- 23:06Speaker 2: it's niche. So the people that are in this third
- 23:09Speaker 2: group that are just looking for a car to signal with,
- 23:13Speaker 2: they seem to not be happy with it. And I
- 23:15Speaker 2: guess I get that because you get in a a
- 23:18Speaker 2: Defender drives better. It's a little faster, it's a little smoother.
- 23:23Speaker 2: You know, it's independent front and rear air bag suspension.
- 23:26Speaker 2: It's going to drive more luxurias like people bought there's
- 23:30Speaker 2: but most people are buying this car because it has
- 23:32Speaker 2: recirculating bolstering. Now there's there's some there's some improvements that
- 23:37Speaker 2: can be made with it. So I think maybe this
- 23:39Speaker 2: is where we go into. I think we should talk
- 23:41Speaker 2: about this. The front axle is I don't want to
- 23:44Speaker 2: call it a junk show because it's not that it's
- 23:46Speaker 2: not durable. But Carilla is a tractor axle company. They
- 23:53Speaker 2: also do things for like the Eveco Daily four by four,
- 23:57Speaker 2: which is kind of like a heavy duty printer in
- 24:00Speaker 2: a lot of ways. So they designed their axles around
- 24:05Speaker 2: like zero castor and and the way what that means
- 24:08Speaker 2: is just think that the axles completely level, right. That's
- 24:12Speaker 2: because of like the the the opinion bearings and as
- 24:15Speaker 2: an inter and outer opinion bearing, they both have to
- 24:17Speaker 2: be lubricated, so the thing wanders right. The alignment that
- 24:23Speaker 2: I mean from the factory, from the dealer, I'm convinced
- 24:26Speaker 2: mine had no free purchase inspection. The alignment was off
- 24:30Speaker 2: the moment I got it. But I bought it on
- 24:31Speaker 2: a Sunday, and I didn't want to have to deal
- 24:33Speaker 2: with like I had just been sat in a room
- 24:36Speaker 2: and talked about a low jack that I needed to
- 24:39Speaker 2: have for like an hour and a half and I'm
- 24:41Speaker 2: like to the point where I was like, just leave
- 24:44Speaker 2: it on the car. I want to get out of here,
- 24:45Speaker 2: but I'm going to take it out and I'm going
- 24:47Speaker 2: to run it over. Oh well, you can't took it
- 24:49Speaker 2: all or mechanics aren't in here. It's it's attached to
- 24:52Speaker 2: the positive and a negative. Here's my mother right exactly. So,
- 24:57Speaker 2: so the dealer experience for me was that's a average
- 25:02Speaker 2: at best, you know. I mean it was somebody that
- 25:03Speaker 2: would be slinging a thirty percent APR Nissan Ultimate as
- 25:07Speaker 2: somebody was who sold me my car. They didn't do
- 25:09Speaker 2: anything bad brand new dealer, not going to mention them.
- 25:13Speaker 2: But the front axle needs work. And then it's also
- 25:21Speaker 2: the front drive shaft. These front drive shafts are failing.
- 25:25Speaker 2: They have a problem, they do they don't fix that.
- 25:28Speaker 2: There doesn't fix that.
- 25:29Speaker 1: Hopefully, no, it's in any new production because they restarted
- 25:32Speaker 1: the fashion. It's all fixed, okay.
- 25:34Speaker 2: But they doesn't think it doesn't get better at telling
- 25:36Speaker 2: people that you know, like I have to say, like
- 25:40Speaker 2: from these forums that I'm on, any else needs to
- 25:44Speaker 2: do a better job at community outreach for an enthusiast
- 25:47Speaker 2: based brand, which they need to realize that they are.
- 25:51Speaker 2: I mean, it's like a joke on these forums that
- 25:55Speaker 2: like you ask any us a question and they ignore you.
- 25:58Speaker 2: You know, they need to get better at that. They
- 26:00Speaker 2: need to communicate better. You know, they've been they've been
- 26:03Speaker 2: supposedly promising this software update for the car for considerable
- 26:08Speaker 2: amount of time, and it's it's just to a lot
- 26:12Speaker 2: of people on these farms. I'm not saying my experience.
- 26:15Speaker 2: You know that they just sold some cars and they're
- 26:18Speaker 2: used to selling petrochemicals or whatever with no aftermarket support.
- 26:24Speaker 2: And it really seems to like vary. Like one of
- 26:28Speaker 2: the dealers are Warner Aos in Salt Lake has a
- 26:32Speaker 2: phenomenal reputation. Yes, Red Nolan has a phenomenal reputation. Where
- 26:37Speaker 2: I think that there are a lot of dealer groups
- 26:41Speaker 2: that picked up a new brand and they're not really
- 26:46Speaker 2: fitting that concept. But you know, it would be great
- 26:50Speaker 2: if any of us would say, hey, there's a fix
- 26:52Speaker 2: out for this, because I know people that without a
- 26:56Speaker 2: lift have had front drive shafts blow up. I know
- 26:58Speaker 2: people with lifts front drive shafts blow up. And it
- 27:03Speaker 2: all goes back to this front axle having zero cast
- 27:06Speaker 2: or baked into it. Now like a wrangler will have
- 27:08Speaker 2: somewhere between five and seven degrees, and that means it's
- 27:11Speaker 2: just kind of tilted up a bit, and that front
- 27:14Speaker 2: drive shaft angle is better, where with this vehicle has
- 27:18Speaker 2: a CB style drive shaft with a rid Zeppa joint
- 27:21Speaker 2: on both ends. They had to do that for the
- 27:23Speaker 2: operating angles, but the operating angles from the factory, in
- 27:27Speaker 2: my opinion, preclude the vehicle from being lifted yeah until
- 27:31Speaker 2: they cut lifted, Yeah, until they cut and turn that axle.
- 27:34Speaker 2: So to speak. It's an old term where like literally
- 27:36Speaker 2: you would take the knuckles and you like cut them
- 27:39Speaker 2: and reweld them. I'm not gonna have that done in
- 27:41Speaker 2: this vehicle because I don't trust anybody to do it.
- 27:44Speaker 2: They've got to fix that.
- 27:45Speaker 1: Well, what they have done is put a new drive
- 27:50Speaker 1: shaft on there with an increased operating angle. Yeah, and
- 27:53Speaker 1: that that may saw a joint has a greater operator Yeah,
- 27:57Speaker 1: but I don't I don't think that the vehicle, I
- 27:59Speaker 1: don't think it makes any sense to lift it more
- 28:02Speaker 1: than about thirty millimeters, And there's a bunch of reasons
- 28:05Speaker 1: for that. It fits a thirty four stuffy So with
- 28:10Speaker 1: a thirty mili lift you can fit a thirty five.
- 28:12Speaker 1: Do you need I mean realistically, like other than if
- 28:16Speaker 1: you're just trying to signal something or if you're doing
- 28:20Speaker 1: recreational four wheel driving, which I don't know that the
- 28:24Speaker 1: I don't know that. Yeah, the Wrangler is going to
- 28:25Speaker 1: be a better choice. It's lighter, it has you know,
- 28:28Speaker 1: four to one transfer case.
- 28:30Speaker 2: You can find an AVJEP on thirty sevens for the same,
- 28:33Speaker 2: if not less money, and it will it will, it
- 28:36Speaker 2: will walk circles.
- 28:37Speaker 1: Around this thing off road well. And the main reason
- 28:39Speaker 1: for that, and a lot of people forget this about jeeps,
- 28:43Speaker 1: the reason why the grenade is so comfortable is because
- 28:47Speaker 1: the body is the width of like a defender was
- 28:50Speaker 1: that's right, yeah, So whereas a Wrangler, the width of
- 28:55Speaker 1: the vehicle is the tires and the fender flares, not
- 28:59Speaker 1: the body.
- 29:00Speaker 2: The body sits well inside six six or eight inches in,
- 29:03Speaker 2: which is why they're better off road because they have
- 29:06Speaker 2: better clearance, they better angles. But the Grenadier is so
- 29:09Speaker 2: much better for travel because there's you know, I mean,
- 29:12Speaker 2: I had a Gladiator. I actually really liked that car.
- 29:17Speaker 2: I had zero issues with it. Really, the aisle aev thing. Yeah,
- 29:22Speaker 2: like that three to six motor has been made in
- 29:25Speaker 2: the squillions of numbers. They have it figured out. But
- 29:29Speaker 2: I'm also pretty tall, and I was tired of hitting
- 29:33Speaker 2: my head on a rollcage because the wrangler is inherently
- 29:36Speaker 2: compromised by the fact that the top is removable, like
- 29:40Speaker 2: it is a part of that vehicle's heritage. It would
- 29:42Speaker 2: be like making a nine to eleven that wasn't rear engine.
- 29:45Speaker 2: It's just they really can't get away from it. But
- 29:48Speaker 2: it severely constricts the amount of space that's inside. So,
- 29:52Speaker 2: as you're saying, not only is the the body of
- 29:55Speaker 2: the vehicle narrower, you then have a a rollcage that
- 30:01Speaker 2: then has protective pattying around it. You know, the rear
- 30:06Speaker 2: storage of the wrangler is suboptimal, right.
- 30:11Speaker 1: I Then they had a submover, which makes it even
- 30:13Speaker 1: less often.
- 30:14Speaker 2: Like, I mean, it was a small palette admittedly, but
- 30:18Speaker 2: I put a I put a palette in the back
- 30:21Speaker 2: of the Grenadier. Yeah, Like that's crazy because those rear doors,
- 30:26Speaker 2: which one I love the ambulance stores because it was
- 30:28Speaker 2: always that it was the forbidden fruit, right like kind
- 30:31Speaker 2: of being a g wagon. But it's actually really nice
- 30:33Speaker 2: and a land cruiser. Guy, it's what you always wanted.
- 30:35Speaker 2: Like I had my little camera case today, I just
- 30:37Speaker 2: opened a little small door. I put it in, I
- 30:40Speaker 2: close it. I don't have to mess with the side
- 30:42Speaker 2: that has the tire, So you know, I do want
- 30:45Speaker 2: to say, like with this axle thing, I'm not like
- 30:48Speaker 2: it's something I'm not happy with the vehicle. I'm actually
- 30:50Speaker 2: so in love with the vehicle that I'm dealing with it.
- 30:54Speaker 2: But it does need.
- 30:55Speaker 1: To be a dressed and that's my impression. The same
- 30:58Speaker 1: thing is that the vehicle is so good, it's so
- 31:01Speaker 1: fit for purpose, that the steering stands out as being
- 31:06Speaker 1: not up to the same standard as the rest of
- 31:08Speaker 1: the car. So let's let me just describe what is
- 31:12Speaker 1: exactly going on around the steering. Somebody might be interested
- 31:15Speaker 1: in buying the car, So there's the vehicle uses an
- 31:20Speaker 1: electric pump, so it gets this like Nachi like randomly
- 31:25Speaker 1: boosty kind of feeling in at slow speed. The turning
- 31:31Speaker 1: radius of the of the Grenadier is four feet wider
- 31:39Speaker 1: than the same of a Wrangler, and the Ringler has
- 31:42Speaker 1: a longer wheelbase, so you're getting into like full sized
- 31:46Speaker 1: truck turning radius. And it's very noticeable, like even trying
- 31:50Speaker 1: to do a U turn in an intersection, so you
- 31:53Speaker 1: notice that the steering radius, the turning radius is very wide. Now,
- 31:58Speaker 1: the reason for that is is it has a frontlocking differential.
- 32:03Speaker 1: So the and this has been always been the case.
- 32:06Speaker 1: It's the same for a power wagon and everything else
- 32:08Speaker 1: like that. They manage the amount of steering lock to
- 32:14Speaker 1: keep the vehicle from within specs. So that way, an
- 32:18Speaker 1: inexperienced driver is an off road they get nervous or
- 32:23Speaker 1: anxious and they lock both difts. Now they feel like
- 32:26Speaker 1: they're sliding or whatever. They go full hard lock.
- 32:29Speaker 2: Left and they and they.
- 32:31Speaker 1: Grab skinny pedal and there's a really good chance you're
- 32:33Speaker 1: going to break the diffs so or an axle, which
- 32:36Speaker 1: is why the turning the stops are.
- 32:39Speaker 2: Where they're at.
- 32:40Speaker 1: It's a way to protect the front axle yeah, and
- 32:44Speaker 1: that is common actually in a lot of different vehicles,
- 32:47Speaker 1: but it's more noticeable in the granite ere. So that's
- 32:50Speaker 1: the reason why the turning radius is what it is.
- 32:53Speaker 1: Is they're trying to make sure that the inexperienced driver
- 32:57Speaker 1: doesn't and the steering is very slow. So when we
- 33:01Speaker 1: stay and return to center.
- 33:02Speaker 2: Yeah, when we say slow, I mean it's just you know,
- 33:06Speaker 2: if you've ever gotten in a car and it's very cold,
- 33:10Speaker 2: shout out to like my Midwestern folks, and it's negative
- 33:14Speaker 2: forty and your power steering fluid is molasses. Yeah, it
- 33:17Speaker 2: kind of feels like that. So the effort well, and
- 33:22Speaker 2: then there's also the lock to lock steering just almost
- 33:24Speaker 2: four turns from fully locked and the left to fully
- 33:28Speaker 2: locked in the right. It's considerably slower than like a
- 33:30Speaker 2: wrangler or frankly even a full sized truck. Right, So
- 33:34Speaker 2: the combination of slow steering with a like it's not
- 33:38Speaker 2: that the the the turning radius is like a barge,
- 33:43Speaker 2: you know, it's like I said, about four feet more
- 33:45Speaker 2: than a wrangler. It's that you physically can't get the
- 33:49Speaker 2: wheel turned fast enough for like pulling into a parking spot.
- 33:53Speaker 2: So that's where you end up doing this three point
- 33:56Speaker 2: turn because you're trying to You're trying to turn a
- 33:58Speaker 2: pot of molasses, and what you're turning with isn't super great.
- 34:02Speaker 1: And if you turn, if you do a U turn
- 34:04Speaker 1: in an intersection, you need to accelerate for some reason
- 34:06Speaker 1: to save your life or whatever. Like the steering is
- 34:10Speaker 1: slow to return to center, so a most steering will
- 34:15Speaker 1: like kind of naturally spin back to a center state.
- 34:18Speaker 1: And that's mostly dictated by toe to a lesser big recast.
- 34:23Speaker 1: So toe and caster are things that are set by
- 34:27Speaker 1: the factory that don't lend themselves towards optimo steering performance
- 34:31Speaker 1: with what the vehicle has, so an owner may choose
- 34:35Speaker 1: to make some changes to that that may improve.
- 34:37Speaker 2: The overall steering. I went to a little over two
- 34:41Speaker 2: degrees of castor on mine, and it significantly improved how
- 34:45Speaker 2: the vehicle tracked. We didn't adjust toe. That's something that
- 34:49Speaker 2: I do need to work on. But like the toe
- 34:53Speaker 2: just helps center everything. It's almost like your skiing right.
- 34:56Speaker 2: You wouldn't ski with the tips of your skis pointed
- 34:59Speaker 2: away because then your legs would go in different directions
- 35:02Speaker 2: or even just perfectly straight, because then you're gonna you're
- 35:05Speaker 2: gonna kind of be a lot of susceptible. You want
- 35:07Speaker 2: a little bit of those those those tips pointed in
- 35:09Speaker 2: because it's a little bit of stability, that's right, But
- 35:12Speaker 2: you know, I mean that kind of it does add.
- 35:13Speaker 1: Stability, and it also adds to directness make it helps
- 35:17Speaker 1: the vehicle handle more directly and more predictably. So, but
- 35:23Speaker 1: we have to give the other side of the coin.
- 35:25Speaker 1: Off road, like which I've done thousands and thousands and thousands.
- 35:29Speaker 2: Of kilometers off road at the Grenadier. The steering is fantastic.
- 35:33Speaker 1: It's really solid, it doesn't kick back, it feels really strong,
- 35:39Speaker 1: and I've hit some stuff harder than I should have.
- 35:41Speaker 2: So the steering off road is low fatigue. It's it
- 35:46Speaker 2: feels really confidence inspiring.
- 35:48Speaker 1: It feels very durable, and it is very durable because
- 35:50Speaker 1: they didn't have any issues if you look at the
- 35:52Speaker 1: steering components underneath the size of a full sized truck.
- 35:56Speaker 2: I just bought the tools to kind of start messing with,
- 36:00Speaker 2: like my drag link and some of the things. The
- 36:04Speaker 2: locknut on the drag link is forty six millimeters exactly
- 36:08Speaker 2: like I looked on snap on and it was the
- 36:10Speaker 2: cost of a firstborn, So I like got some am
- 36:13Speaker 2: some you know, a little what do they call those?
- 36:15Speaker 2: They're just like just the wrench head crazy over built. Yeah,
- 36:19Speaker 2: I mean like I haven't f five to fifty in
- 36:21Speaker 2: my garage with the earth Romer, and it's bigger than that, yes, exactly,
- 36:24Speaker 2: I mean it's it's considerable. I also have this suspicion,
- 36:27Speaker 2: I don't have that many miles on mine, but I
- 36:30Speaker 2: have this suspicion that the components are starting to kind
- 36:33Speaker 2: of wear in, and the steering feels getting a little
- 36:38Speaker 2: bit better, like it's very tight, like almost like the
- 36:41Speaker 2: pre load on it. You know, this isn't I'm not
- 36:44Speaker 2: sinistic factor, but it feels like the pre load on
- 36:47Speaker 2: everything is very tight. But that's also how like you're
- 36:50Speaker 2: going to get along service life's I think they were
- 36:53Speaker 2: aiming for a twenty five year usable service life, which
- 36:56Speaker 2: is also the specification of the heavy duty land cruisers,
- 37:01Speaker 2: so that is the seventies series.
- 37:03Speaker 1: Yeah, and you like, after having crossed two continents with
- 37:07Speaker 1: the Grenadier, the steering felt better than the day that
- 37:10Speaker 1: I got the car. So it really does, it really
- 37:14Speaker 1: does hold up. There's a lot of durability there it
- 37:17Speaker 1: is a great steering feel off road. I'd like the
- 37:22Speaker 1: turning radius to improve off road. But we're we're talking
- 37:26Speaker 1: about this because it's really important that we are being
- 37:29Speaker 1: fair and balanced, despite the fact that Matt and I
- 37:33Speaker 1: both really enjoy the car. Yeah, and it would be
- 37:36Speaker 1: either this. I mean, I think of the vehicles that
- 37:39Speaker 1: I would want to buy, it would either be a Grenadier,
- 37:41Speaker 1: or it would be like an AT four X Canyon,
- 37:45Speaker 1: or it would be the Rivian R one s like
- 37:48Speaker 1: those are, like, those are the three cars that I
- 37:50Speaker 1: would consider buying.
- 37:51Speaker 2: Those were the three cars I was looking at. But yeah,
- 37:53Speaker 2: but I already had an entire pickup trucks.
- 37:56Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly so, but like they like, the Grenadier for
- 37:59Speaker 1: me is a vehicle that I recommend frequently to people,
- 38:04Speaker 1: and people like Matt, people like me that crossed Africa.
- 38:07Speaker 1: Like we're having like Matt pryor you know, we're having
- 38:10Speaker 1: good success with them on long trips. Yeah, so they're
- 38:13Speaker 1: holding up.
- 38:14Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, I again, I'm not trying to be
- 38:17Speaker 2: like negative on the vehicle. It's just that it's so close, Yeah,
- 38:24Speaker 2: that it's almost like frustrating, you know it to me.
- 38:30Speaker 1: Maybe someone's gonna someone's gonna figure it out. The aftermark
- 38:33Speaker 1: is gonna figure out the steering, and then of course
- 38:35Speaker 1: anios will figure out the steering.
- 38:37Speaker 2: You know, like there's a there's yeah, it it. It's
- 38:41Speaker 2: like the best way maybe I would say, is it's
- 38:44Speaker 2: like the car has a track alignment, like if you
- 38:46Speaker 2: drive a race car in the parking lot to get
- 38:50Speaker 2: to the track. I mean little bumps that you cannot
- 38:54Speaker 2: even like see without like a level or something. They
- 38:58Speaker 2: move the steering. You wouldn't want that on the road,
- 39:00Speaker 2: and I think ineos went too far biased towards off road.
- 39:06Speaker 2: You know, this should maybe be an optional alignment. But
- 39:09Speaker 2: they need to you know, this isn't a joke. They
- 39:11Speaker 2: need to return to center, you know. Well, and also
- 39:15Speaker 2: like there are other vehicles, there's wranglers that are solid
- 39:19Speaker 2: from the axle, there are you know, obviously the G Wagon,
- 39:22Speaker 2: the GW Wagon that I own, which was thirty years
- 39:25Speaker 2: older than it, drives a lot like a Gwagon. I
- 39:28Speaker 2: remember the first time the turning radius and the return
- 39:31Speaker 2: to center was the g doesn't even have that great
- 39:34Speaker 2: of a turney radius, like it's a bit, it's a
- 39:36Speaker 2: The steering is also very slow. It's also a bit cumbersome,
- 39:40Speaker 2: but it's still somehow but it's better better. So yeah,
- 39:42Speaker 2: it's like and it's thirteen. They've been making this since
- 39:44Speaker 2: the seventies. They exactly the car is the Grenadier is
- 39:49Speaker 2: so close. Yeah right, there's some things in the software,
- 39:53Speaker 2: you know. At first I was like, oh, the infotainment
- 39:55Speaker 2: is laggy or buggy. I actually, I'll actually take that back.
- 40:00Speaker 2: I don't think that it's laggy or buggy. It's just
- 40:03Speaker 2: that they're a small company, and so that the most
- 40:08Speaker 2: annoying thing about it is the it's the speed warnings.
- 40:13Speaker 2: So for twenty twenty four in Europe, for European market vehicles,
- 40:18Speaker 2: they have these mandatory aid AS systems, Advanced driver Assistance systems.
- 40:23Speaker 2: So these are the things like like my wife, Subaru
- 40:26Speaker 2: has it, and I'm sure you can turn it off,
- 40:28Speaker 2: but you never do. You're a little too close to
- 40:30Speaker 2: the white line. And then but the annoying thing is
- 40:36Speaker 2: the vicious speed alert system or speed warning whatever they
- 40:41Speaker 2: call it. You go fifty five point one miles per
- 40:45Speaker 2: hour and it starts dinging at it, so you can
- 40:49Speaker 2: and my dealer actually did pre program this. It's like
- 40:51Speaker 2: a click click, the favorite button, you go there and
- 40:55Speaker 2: that favorite button's a little laggy. Sometimes it doesn't pull
- 40:59Speaker 2: up where you can turn off, and you have to
- 41:01Speaker 2: turn off. It's part of getting in the car. That's
- 41:03Speaker 2: another one of the things where you know, whether that's
- 41:06Speaker 2: dealers that are promising this to people and car dealers
- 41:09Speaker 2: or car car dealers like used car salesman is a
- 41:13Speaker 2: used car salesman as a joke for a reason, you know,
- 41:16Speaker 2: but it we're going on a year of them not
- 41:21Speaker 2: fixing this problem for the US market and there's no
- 41:24Speaker 2: communication on it. So then when when a company isn't communicating,
- 41:30Speaker 2: then people start to make they fill in the gap. Right.
- 41:34Speaker 2: So then with that, you know kind of where I
- 41:38Speaker 2: was talking about, you know, these these user groups, and granted,
- 41:41Speaker 2: whenever you have a user group, people go there when
- 41:43Speaker 2: they have a problem, they go there when they want
- 41:46Speaker 2: to complain and they want to vent. Again, I think
- 41:48Speaker 2: a lot of it's dealer dependent. There's good dealers, there's
- 41:52Speaker 2: dealers that need to get better. They need to communicate, Hey,
- 41:55Speaker 2: we're either going to fix this or we're not. Because
- 41:58Speaker 2: it's been so long of it not being fixed. Then
- 42:03Speaker 2: again that concept of where it feels to some that
- 42:08Speaker 2: Anios is ignoring the end user. That's where it starts
- 42:13Speaker 2: to come out.
- 42:13Speaker 1: Yeah, and I wonder how much of that was from
- 42:17Speaker 1: the production pause that they had to do. And and yeah,
- 42:20Speaker 1: it's hard to say. I mean, fortunately, there's a there's
- 42:23Speaker 1: a bunch of of you know, positive news in the
- 42:26Speaker 1: sense that you know, the core Master will be here soon.
- 42:30Speaker 2: The US started, the US starting to hit dealers.
- 42:32Speaker 1: Yeah, the the US market has totally exceeded their expectations.
- 42:37Speaker 1: So again, like poor information, people will be like, oh,
- 42:41Speaker 1: there's so many renadiers on this lot, they must not
- 42:43Speaker 1: be selling.
- 42:44Speaker 2: It's that's false. Anyone who's told you that is lying. Yeah,
- 42:48Speaker 2: it's the fact that the US is doing so well.
- 42:51Speaker 2: They're sending more, They're sending more here. So the US
- 42:54Speaker 2: market has performed very well. And I'm excited by the
- 42:58Speaker 2: fact that a vehicle that's built for overlanding is going
- 43:01Speaker 2: to sell nearly ten thousand units in the first year.
- 43:05Speaker 2: So that's pretty They're about to deliver their twenty fifth thousand,
- 43:09Speaker 2: and Mercedes sells twenty five thousand g wagons a year. Yeah, exactly,
- 43:13Speaker 2: so you know that's that's significant. I I'm just I'm
- 43:17Speaker 2: just so like I I got this right at the
- 43:22Speaker 2: time that I bought one of the new carera at
- 43:24Speaker 2: nine eleven Careerra teas. Yeah, and it totally stole the
- 43:28Speaker 2: thunder from the nine to eleven. Like I actually like,
- 43:32Speaker 2: like I have these two amazing cars, and it's like,
- 43:35Speaker 2: what am I going to drive today? And I'm picking
- 43:37Speaker 2: the Grenadier more than the nine to eleven. Yeah, Like what? Yeah,
- 43:41Speaker 2: Like that's so weird.
- 43:42Speaker 1: It's charming, it's just it's just and it's nice to
- 43:45Speaker 1: have in The nine to eleven is the same way.
- 43:48Speaker 1: Both of those cars are built to purpose. Yeah, but
- 43:50Speaker 1: the nine to eleven is a great you can drive
- 43:53Speaker 1: it every day, but you can also go run it
- 43:55Speaker 1: on track.
- 43:55Speaker 2: And they're similar in ethos in a lot of ways, right,
- 43:59Speaker 2: they're enthusiasts are a little bit different, Like you don't want, yeah,
- 44:03Speaker 2: like you know if you want, I mean the nine
- 44:06Speaker 2: to eleven is very well engineered and it's it's very
- 44:10Speaker 2: well developed as a product. I mean, the Grenadiers that
- 44:15Speaker 2: year want version one point, right, So so you know
- 44:20Speaker 2: the axle is going to be a quick fix. You're
- 44:23Speaker 2: going to sort all that stuff out and then you're
- 44:26Speaker 2: gonna have this wonderful, charming car like it where I
- 44:31Speaker 2: was kind of saying, like, I know that the lineage
- 44:34Speaker 2: of this kind of maybe starts with the Defender, Right
- 44:37Speaker 2: you go to the Grenadier's pub and in in London,
- 44:41Speaker 2: and you know he's still got pictures next to the
- 44:44Speaker 2: Grenadier of his defenders. Right. Emotionally, I haven't had a
- 44:48Speaker 2: car that has like tickled my fancy this much, honestly,
- 44:53Speaker 2: maybe since my last land Rover. Stuff. You know, it
- 44:55Speaker 2: it is a it's a it's it's charming. I like
- 45:01Speaker 2: also that people don't really know what it is, so
- 45:06Speaker 2: like do you remember like fifteen years ago in the US,
- 45:09Speaker 2: most people think it's a GW Wagon. Yeah, Like, but
- 45:11Speaker 2: you remember like all that time ago when overlanding was
- 45:14Speaker 2: kind of a novelty, you know, and you'd be driving
- 45:17Speaker 2: something and you're kind of like, like the car had purpose,
- 45:20Speaker 2: Like the Grenadier has purpose, and it has that same
- 45:23Speaker 2: like curiosity, It has the same like I get in it,
- 45:28Speaker 2: and there's a bit of wander lust where some cars
- 45:32Speaker 2: have become so vanilla in their approach that the emotion
- 45:38Speaker 2: can kind of like it was always the argument for Toyota.
- 45:41Speaker 1: And that's what happens when something loses its authenticity. So
- 45:45Speaker 1: I think that that's the reason why nine to eleven
- 45:47Speaker 1: is so charming, is because it's a very authentic vehicle.
- 45:49Speaker 2: Yeah, and it's very much true.
- 45:52Speaker 1: Like if you go get in, if you get in
- 45:53Speaker 1: a super duty, it feels often it feels like it's
- 45:57Speaker 1: built to.
- 45:58Speaker 2: Do what it's doing.
- 45:59Speaker 1: And and I just like the fact that you get
- 46:02Speaker 1: an aggretted here and there isn't fake wood. Yeah, Like
- 46:04Speaker 1: they didn't spend money trying to signal something that's fake,
- 46:08Speaker 1: Like there's not, whereas like that's unfortunate. Like the direction
- 46:12Speaker 1: of the Jerry mcgoverns of the world is like, let's
- 46:15Speaker 1: make things that signal as opposed to perform, and we
- 46:20Speaker 1: need things. I want things that perform. I want things
- 46:24Speaker 1: that do a job.
- 46:24Speaker 2: It's it's it's just that whole like the car seems
- 46:27Speaker 2: to subscribe to that by once cry once mantra totally
- 46:32Speaker 2: it is. I mean from first interaction with it, you
- 46:36Speaker 2: are quite aware that it is built solidly. Yeah, I
- 46:41Speaker 2: mean it's pre wired to the roof rack for lights.
- 46:45Speaker 2: If you get the high load auxiliary switchy, yes, do exactly.
- 46:51Speaker 2: Mine's pretty base, right, So maybe that's just I have lockers.
- 46:55Speaker 2: I basically I want an instant gratification. At least you
- 47:00Speaker 2: pick the right color, like I love I got the
- 47:03Speaker 2: Scottish white, so it just it just fits the car,
- 47:05Speaker 2: like to me, steel wheels, land Cruiser, Defender. You know,
- 47:11Speaker 2: visions of Africa, they're always white, They're always white. I
- 47:16Speaker 2: think the magic mushroom that you have is really really
- 47:18Speaker 2: cool too. If there was a magic mushroom, you know,
- 47:21Speaker 2: maybe I would have gone for that. But this is
- 47:25Speaker 2: what we managed. This is what it would have been bad.
- 47:27Speaker 2: As background on that, Scott and I tend to buy
- 47:29Speaker 2: the same clothes. Well, we bought separately. We bought, you know,
- 47:34Speaker 2: a Moonwatch on the same exact day without each other knowing. Yeah,
- 47:37Speaker 2: that's super obscure. It's bad. So mine is not a
- 47:42Speaker 2: trial master. It is not a field master. Initially I
- 47:46Speaker 2: was kind of like, you know, like I mean, I
- 47:49Speaker 2: think Bellstaff's cool. I think Sir Jim also bought bell Staff,
- 47:54Speaker 2: which is cool because it was kind of it it's
- 47:57Speaker 2: back on course like bell Staff was again that heirloom.
- 48:02Speaker 2: You know, it's a jacket that you would buy and
- 48:03Speaker 2: you wear for twenty years, and it was cool to
- 48:06Speaker 2: have it with Patina. Right. So I didn't though, really
- 48:11Speaker 2: like the bell Staff thing because it was like, man,
- 48:17Speaker 2: how do you say it? Like it just didn't feel
- 48:20Speaker 2: right for the car, you know, like I it's it's
- 48:25Speaker 2: you know, bell Staff's expective. It's a luxury brander. So
- 48:27Speaker 2: then you're trying to like buy the luxury signaling version
- 48:31Speaker 2: of the thing that's meant to be the utility thing.
- 48:35Speaker 2: And I was a little conflicted on that as first.
- 48:37Speaker 2: I don't have as much of a problem with it
- 48:40Speaker 2: now as I did because I realized that the things
- 48:44Speaker 2: that the trial Master comes with, it's a good spec yeah,
- 48:49Speaker 2: basically right, like you could pretty much go to the Quartermasters.
- 48:53Speaker 2: You really could go get a trial Master Grenadier. And
- 48:57Speaker 2: when I say Grenader, I made Quartermaster too. It's kind
- 48:59Speaker 2: of Wrangler Gladiator that would be the car you'd want
- 49:02Speaker 2: to you'd want to drive. I do not have the
- 49:04Speaker 2: auxiliary battery. I wish I had it. I don't have
- 49:07Speaker 2: the high load switches, you know, do what I really
- 49:12Speaker 2: need it. I don't know. It would be cool to
- 49:13Speaker 2: have the five hundred amp circuit for the winch and
- 49:15Speaker 2: that kind of stuff. I don't have a winch. You know,
- 49:18Speaker 2: but I do have the little compass and I think
- 49:21Speaker 2: that that's charming totally. I do have heated seats, which
- 49:26Speaker 2: is nice, I believe. I believe at the time you
- 49:30Speaker 2: could only get heated seats with leather. Now you can
- 49:33Speaker 2: get heated seats with the cloth. I would have went
- 49:36Speaker 2: for the cloth because I think it fits the vehicle
- 49:39Speaker 2: better and it's just more comfortable. It's interesting. I do
- 49:43Speaker 2: have the the the heat insulated windows, like the tinted
- 49:47Speaker 2: window package. I wouldn't have chose that. But I'm not,
- 49:50Speaker 2: like we live in Arizona. I'm not like unhappy about it.
- 49:54Speaker 2: And my MSRP was just over seventy eight thousand. I
- 50:01Speaker 2: got a twenty five hundred dollars rebate. That's what AIOS
- 50:03Speaker 2: is running. I believe they're now doing a five thousand
- 50:06Speaker 2: dollars rebate. And you know, like I was talking to
- 50:11Speaker 2: my wife Laura on and I'm like, it felt expensive,
- 50:14Speaker 2: But when you really start to look at what vehicles
- 50:18Speaker 2: cost these days, it's not that bad. I don't think so.
- 50:25Speaker 2: I mean, it's it's definitely premium, you know, but like
- 50:29Speaker 2: you can buy one hundred thousand dollars plus jeep Wrangler
- 50:33Speaker 2: I'm not even talking AEV. You know, a super duty
- 50:36Speaker 2: is eighties nineties. You know, things got expensive. And I
- 50:42Speaker 2: do think that some people with Ineos when they launched
- 50:46Speaker 2: this concept, they also was pre COVID. I think they
- 50:49Speaker 2: launched the project in twenty eighteen. Maybe it goes back
- 50:53Speaker 2: a little further because these things take time. They were
- 50:57Speaker 2: targeting like a fifty thousand dollars price point. Fifty thousand
- 51:00Speaker 2: dollars then is seventy now that's right with you? Just
- 51:04Speaker 2: do the calculation, like the inflation. Yeah, yeah, I mean
- 51:06Speaker 2: it sucks that this happened, you know, but it's maybe
- 51:10Speaker 2: it's a controversial topic, but Anios is not responsible for
- 51:14Speaker 2: global inflation, right exactly. So also not going to sell
- 51:20Speaker 2: something for more than they need to because they're going
- 51:22Speaker 2: to not hit the volume numbers. Yeah, they're trying to
- 51:25Speaker 2: be competitive. It's just expensive to make a low volume
- 51:29Speaker 2: niche vehicle airlom thing. Yeah. Like it's you know, it's
- 51:32Speaker 2: like it's like buying a pair of Japanese salvage denim.
- 51:36Speaker 2: The concept is that you don't buy ten pairs of jeans,
- 51:38Speaker 2: you buy one. You know, it's really well made, and
- 51:42Speaker 2: I just think, you know, I know maybe in the
- 51:46Speaker 2: in the start of this podcast, middle of this podcast.
- 51:49Speaker 2: I don't want people to think I don't like the car,
- 51:51Speaker 2: or that I'm frustrated with it. I'm just passionate about it.
- 51:55Speaker 2: Like I I wouldn't get worked up if I didn't
- 51:59Speaker 2: give it. Yeah, you know, like it's so close, it's great.
- 52:05Speaker 2: I love driving it. I love the interior. You know,
- 52:08Speaker 2: maybe I wouldn't have chose great plastic, maybe I would
- 52:11Speaker 2: have chose black plastic, you know, but I dig it totally.
- 52:16Speaker 2: I like the city and position. Although the seats do
- 52:19Speaker 2: need lumbar, you know, there's it's it's at that that
- 52:23Speaker 2: was surprising, like Ricaro without an adjustable well, and it
- 52:26Speaker 2: even has the in the side panel for the seat
- 52:31Speaker 2: like where you would have your your electric adjustments sort of.
- 52:35Speaker 2: These are manual seats. It actually has a cutout right
- 52:39Speaker 2: for what would be adjustable lumbar. I think they were
- 52:44Speaker 2: just glad to get the seats at all. Yeah, well,
- 52:46Speaker 2: and maybe I don't. For those that don't know any
- 52:49Speaker 2: of us had a shutdown, Scott had mentioned, and that's
- 52:52Speaker 2: because Riccaro filed bankruptcy and you can't sell cars that
- 52:59Speaker 2: you can't have seat and when you're a small manufacturer, right,
- 53:03Speaker 2: you know, and it's also what you you would see
- 53:05Speaker 2: in these forums.
- 53:06Speaker 1: They'd be like, just get there are plenty of seat
- 53:08Speaker 1: mad like you have to get recertified on saverything, and
- 53:11Speaker 1: like it's it.
- 53:12Speaker 2: Is not an easy thing. That is literally where the
- 53:15Speaker 2: human the little fleshy bit interfaces with is from the
- 53:19Speaker 2: seat exactly. So air bags and passenger with you know,
- 53:24Speaker 2: safety and everything, all that stuff is all need to
- 53:27Speaker 2: be re certified.
- 53:27Speaker 1: So yeah, that's a challenging thing to overcome. Maybe let's
- 53:31Speaker 1: pivot a little bit towards like accessories, the things that
- 53:35Speaker 1: you would do to modify it, you know, maybe like
- 53:39Speaker 1: the things that you think the well I did add
- 53:42Speaker 1: a snorkel. Yeah, and that's a factory option. It's a
- 53:45Speaker 1: factory option.
- 53:46Speaker 2: I bought it on eBay for like two hundred bucks
- 53:48Speaker 2: and I installed it. It took me exactly one miller
- 53:53Speaker 2: light to install it. Make sure that you have good
- 53:56Speaker 2: tour crenches. It's not a problem with the hardware. I
- 53:58Speaker 2: had like some weird arenches and they I've just noticed
- 54:02Speaker 2: they're a little funky because the bolts can be a
- 54:06Speaker 2: little shallow from any acid that there's weak or anything,
- 54:10Speaker 2: but it went right on. You know. The hardest part
- 54:13Speaker 2: is kind of figuring out how you thread the the
- 54:17Speaker 2: side turned signal through the snorkel. I mean, it's a
- 54:21Speaker 2: raised air intake. I know that there's gonna be somebody
- 54:24Speaker 2: that drives an FJ Cruiser with driving gloves. It's gonna
- 54:26Speaker 2: correct me. But yeah, that looks kind of cool, but
- 54:30Speaker 2: that's a factory thing. I'm doing the goose gear on mine,
- 54:34Speaker 2: and I'm doing the you know, I think that that's
- 54:36Speaker 2: gonna be cool because like in theory, I can fold
- 54:40Speaker 2: the seat down like you actually get a little bit
- 54:43Speaker 2: more like I can. Actually, then I'm thinking I can
- 54:46Speaker 2: almost get a regular palette in there because it's above
- 54:50Speaker 2: the wheel arches, which will be kind of cool. And
- 54:53Speaker 2: then AJ from GP Factor makes this really cool little
- 54:58Speaker 2: little table that is on the rear door. Now, Aneos
- 55:01Speaker 2: does have their own little table for the right side door,
- 55:07Speaker 2: but it's not it's it's a dealer fitted accessory. So
- 55:09Speaker 2: then you're getting hit at two hundred fifty dollars an
- 55:11Speaker 2: hour to install it, and you can get this better one.
- 55:14Speaker 2: So I'm doing that. But you did like the nomad
- 55:18Speaker 2: wheels on yours I did, which I think look really good.
- 55:21Speaker 2: I think they're great. Yeah, and they're so they look
- 55:23Speaker 2: like the steelies, but they're aluminum. I like how they
- 55:26Speaker 2: kind of like the way that they dish. I like
- 55:28Speaker 2: that look. And then I put a two ninety or
- 55:32Speaker 2: two eighty five seventy five that's what was to eighty
- 55:35Speaker 2: five seventy five seventeen on there, which is a nice
- 55:39Speaker 2: tall that seems to be like the correct size tire
- 55:42Speaker 2: if you're gonna go up, I think so.
- 55:44Speaker 1: And so you end up it's nearly thirty four inches
- 55:47Speaker 1: in diameter and it's only about eleven inches wide. So
- 55:51Speaker 1: and there you know, BFG will come out with a
- 55:54Speaker 1: thirty four ten fifty seventeen again, which I think is
- 55:57Speaker 1: probably even a little bit little bit narrower, which is
- 56:01Speaker 1: probably just a little bit better. I do like there's
- 56:04Speaker 1: a couple different companies that are making sliders that go
- 56:08Speaker 1: in place of the plastic body cap that goes on there,
- 56:12Speaker 1: so they fit up tight like that.
- 56:14Speaker 2: Oh that's cool. Yeah, yeah, I do like those because
- 56:19Speaker 2: you end up with better ground clearance like the factory
- 56:22Speaker 2: Wrangler has where it's like an extruded shape and exactly
- 56:26Speaker 2: strong attack, and that's what I think the vehicle needs
- 56:30Speaker 2: because then you maximize your ground clearance. The factory sliders
- 56:34Speaker 2: are actually super strong.
- 56:35Speaker 1: I hit them on plenty of stuff, but they do
- 56:37Speaker 1: sit a little lower, So I like the fact that
- 56:39Speaker 1: those sit a little higher.
- 56:41Speaker 2: Yeah, the the factory brushguard I really like. Yeah, so
- 56:47Speaker 2: you can order that. It's an Australian spec item. I
- 56:51Speaker 2: believe you can get in South Africa South Africa. It's
- 56:54Speaker 2: not in the US probably because again, like the seats,
- 56:56Speaker 2: they would have to probably do a lot a lot
- 56:59Speaker 2: of safety stuff. There are a few companies that are
- 57:02Speaker 2: making a very similar, visually identical one in the US,
- 57:08Speaker 2: and then you're saving considerably on overseas freight. Sure, GP
- 57:12Speaker 2: Factor does make one of those. There's a few other companies.
- 57:15Speaker 2: I just probably would go at that one because they
- 57:18Speaker 2: actually like between a J and rin. They like they
- 57:21Speaker 2: have grinned ear, like here's my here's my Like the
- 57:25Speaker 2: thing that gets me all hot and bothered that I
- 57:28Speaker 2: love is the the Alue cab. Silentious. Okay, there's feel
- 57:35Speaker 2: it's a weird name, but it's their pop top. Like
- 57:38Speaker 2: there's their hercules. They have one for the seventy They
- 57:40Speaker 2: haven't for the the Defender. Defender. They now have one
- 57:45Speaker 2: for the graned Ear and I know that they actually,
- 57:47Speaker 2: like in the house, actually provided a vehicle. I saw
- 57:50Speaker 2: two Alue cab like before they were even out, so
- 57:53Speaker 2: like they really are making efforts. But I just keep thinking.
- 57:57Speaker 2: I'm like, you know, we're we're thinking of this and
- 58:01Speaker 2: one ship that you were planning, and you know the
- 58:05Speaker 2: plan is meant to take the Earth Rummer. And then
- 58:07Speaker 2: I'm like, oh yeah, on the occasions that you want
- 58:10Speaker 2: to camp, it's super simple. Yeah, Like Rin's got one
- 58:13Speaker 2: on his you know, so they're doing and I saw
- 58:16Speaker 2: him out winter camping with it, and it looks it
- 58:19Speaker 2: looks good, Like the interior even looks like they really
- 58:24Speaker 2: put some effort into how that was going to look
- 58:28Speaker 2: what it was going to look like. And again like
- 58:32Speaker 2: you could just go buy like a trialmaster that has
- 58:35Speaker 2: all your stuff, ship it to you know. Okay, four
- 58:39Speaker 2: World Drive I think you know Tiny Rig Company is
- 58:43Speaker 2: also doing one there in California, really really nice guys
- 58:47Speaker 2: and go and then you're like you have you're also
- 58:51Speaker 2: at the East Coast, so like you get the thing done,
- 58:54Speaker 2: you show up, yeah, and then you drive it up
- 58:56Speaker 2: to Halifax and you ship it over to Iceland. It's
- 59:00Speaker 2: like it gets like it keeps me up at night,
- 59:03Speaker 2: you know. I'm just like sitting there like oh man, no, yeah,
- 59:07Speaker 2: that's what keeps me up at night. Brings some other things,
- 59:14Speaker 2: is that the polar bears, you know, so like like
- 59:19Speaker 2: quite quickly these vehicles are becoming like dialed. They really
- 59:25Speaker 2: are really cool. Yeah.
- 59:26Speaker 1: I think I think people get a little bit too
- 59:30Speaker 1: excited about big tires because I think people are used
- 59:33Speaker 1: to wranglers, and I would just really recommend avoiding that,
- 59:37Speaker 1: like go tall and there.
- 59:38Speaker 2: Yeah, it's just like I just imagine like there's there's
- 59:41Speaker 2: the keyboard. Yeah, you know, it's like the first thing people.
- 59:45Speaker 2: It's like, you know, yeah, this is a travel.
- 59:49Speaker 1: Vehicle, so you want it to remain as much like
- 59:52Speaker 1: that as possible. And I was just really impressed by
- 59:57Speaker 1: the fact that like a roough rock's a good idea.
- 1:00:00Speaker 2: You have some.
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: Reserve capacity for me, I use the refractacury fuel there
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: is there are fuel tank options now for the vehicle.
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: Now they're not EPA. Yeah, you've got to be careful
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: with that, Like, well, but this is this is how
- 1:00:13Speaker 1: I would look at it to your to your example
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: of shipping this thing to go drive around you. You know,
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: you get it to okay for we'll drive, you get
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: the top installed, you install the fuel tank, but you
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: don't connect it to the rest of the of the Yeah,
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: it doesn't affect.
- 1:00:31Speaker 2: The EPA registration. And then as soon as you leave
- 1:00:35Speaker 2: the country then you can use it. Yeah, you know.
- 1:00:37Speaker 2: I I know that it's a bit of a gray
- 1:00:41Speaker 2: area with them. I've had people tell me, no, it's
- 1:00:44Speaker 2: a fuel transfer system, it's fine. It's fine for a diesel.
- 1:00:49Speaker 2: It is not fine for I've had people with gassing,
- 1:00:53Speaker 2: you know, manufacturing these things, but I just have not
- 1:00:57Speaker 2: buy in it. I have not been able to find
- 1:01:00Speaker 2: anything that says it's okay. I know that there are
- 1:01:04Speaker 2: very specific certifications that are on a product level that
- 1:01:08Speaker 2: have to happen from my research, you know, So just
- 1:01:11Speaker 2: don't use it in the US. Yeah, when you go
- 1:01:13Speaker 2: down to Baja, fill it up. But I'm not horrible
- 1:01:16Speaker 2: gas mileage, No, like that's another reason not to overmodify.
- 1:01:20Speaker 2: I took mine to the Las Vegas Grand Prix for
- 1:01:23Speaker 2: f one one. Like we're saying, at the wind they
- 1:01:26Speaker 2: parked it next to all the hot Ferraris and stuff,
- 1:01:29Speaker 2: because they're like what is this thing? Like, wait, you
- 1:01:32Speaker 2: parked it here? Well I'm like, okay, cool, but I
- 1:01:37Speaker 2: got like eighteen miles of the Galli and I'm like
- 1:01:40Speaker 2: fine with that, Like I do. It's not a car
- 1:01:42Speaker 2: that I feel the need to drive quickly, although it
- 1:01:45Speaker 2: is surprisingly fast quick for what the numbers suggest on paper.
- 1:01:51Speaker 2: It has less horsepower than a Jeep Wrangler, yet it
- 1:01:54Speaker 2: does have more torque. It is considerably faster, Like Laurel
- 1:01:58Speaker 2: thinks that. She's like, oh yeah, it's fast. Oh yeah,
- 1:02:00Speaker 2: because it's usable like that mid range is very beefy
- 1:02:06Speaker 2: and the transmission is just perfectly matched to the engine.
- 1:02:09Speaker 2: It's money. It's totally money.
- 1:02:10Speaker 1: I mean, like the Tacoma has better numbers, the Canyon
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: has better numbers. Like I'm sorry, it is not even close.
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: Like it's one of those things you know they always say,
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: like German horses are bigger. I'm gonna that's that's how
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: I would describe it. It's a straight six that's got
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: a turbo on it, and it's a great transmission. It
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: just works together to be very drivable. Like there are
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: times like okay, and as an example, quarter Master with
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: thirty four's a scout camper in the back and stuff
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: for events.
- 1:02:43Speaker 2: And I needed to get on and around this corner
- 1:02:45Speaker 2: and I lit up the times like I mean, I did,
- 1:02:49Speaker 2: like a proper Scottie, you know, around the corner, full throttle.
- 1:02:54Speaker 2: I mean it smoked because of the center diff was
- 1:02:58Speaker 2: a mock right, it like lit up attire. It's it's
- 1:03:02Speaker 2: it's quick. Yeah, like again, like I just I like it.
- 1:03:07Speaker 2: I find that the Grenadier is a it's like an
- 1:03:10Speaker 2: enthusiast vehicle that feels very practical. It's like, you know,
- 1:03:16Speaker 2: I was never I was three when the Defender won
- 1:03:19Speaker 2: ten came out in the US, so I couldn't like
- 1:03:21Speaker 2: walk in and get one. I was seven when the
- 1:03:23Speaker 2: ninety stopped being sold. We never got the seventy. This
- 1:03:28Speaker 2: to me just felt like okay, like this was my
- 1:03:32Speaker 2: opportunity to like have that experience, to buy a utility
- 1:03:39Speaker 2: focused vehicle that was very well made. I love the size.
- 1:03:45Speaker 2: I mean it is dimensionally nearly identical to a Wrangler.
- 1:03:48Speaker 2: It's just more efficient in its use of space. If
- 1:03:51Speaker 2: you're buying a vehicle to do the rubicon buying the Jeep,
- 1:03:55Speaker 2: if you're buying a vehicle to drive around the world,
- 1:03:58Speaker 2: buy the Granadeer for sure, and think about this. It's
- 1:04:01Speaker 2: the only Pinnacle.
- 1:04:03Speaker 1: Overland vehicle that we can buy off the lot in
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: the United States. Now, if Toyota ever brings the three
- 1:04:08Speaker 1: hundred back, serious competition to the Grenadier. If Lexus comes
- 1:04:12Speaker 1: out with the seven hundred overtrail plus things that there
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: are rumors around, that's going to be a great competition too.
- 1:04:21Speaker 2: But this is a Pinnacle overland.
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: Vehicle that's built the purpose that you can buy for
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: seventy five brand.
- 1:04:27Speaker 2: I think it's important to talk a little bit about
- 1:04:29Speaker 2: the competition for it out of fairness. I do think
- 1:04:33Speaker 2: that the closest competitor for it is the new two
- 1:04:40Speaker 2: fifty series land Cruiser. For sure. It just didn't excite me,
- 1:04:45Speaker 2: you know, like great vehicle, though great vehicle, I mean,
- 1:04:48Speaker 2: like honestly, like everything that we've said about the Grenadier
- 1:04:52Speaker 2: also applies to that car. Grenadeer is better off road,
- 1:04:56Speaker 2: think absolutely. I've spent a ton of time in both.
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: Yeah, the ground clearance on the two fifty, especially at
- 1:05:03Speaker 1: the front dependent like the front skip plant and everything.
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: It's like eight inches at the front, So it's a
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: it's a trail drag or the two fifty is.
- 1:05:12Speaker 2: I also think though that the two fifty just has
- 1:05:15Speaker 2: more aftermarkets support. So if you are easy to fix,
- 1:05:19Speaker 2: you know, if you're like Wrangler on the on the left,
- 1:05:23Speaker 2: which is like the rock crawling side, and on the
- 1:05:25Speaker 2: right you have the Grenadier as the Overlander, you know,
- 1:05:28Speaker 2: typical Toyota.
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: They kind of come out in the middle. And it's
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: a great vehicle. I love the fact that you have
- 1:05:34Speaker 1: a Sweve Bard disconnect on it. I like the fact
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: you have a rear locker in a land cruiser, the
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: fact that as a center div lock, it's all will drive.
- 1:05:42Speaker 1: It feels good. Ye, I think it looks great. It's
- 1:05:45Speaker 1: very handsome, it looks good. It's a very practical shape.
- 1:05:48Speaker 1: The GX is another great competitor. The GX Yeah, I mean,
- 1:05:51Speaker 1: you know, the Overtrail plus or the Overtrail even more
- 1:05:54Speaker 1: off roady. It's just you know, they just like Lexus
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: with the GX is so good at hitting hot moms.
- 1:06:02Speaker 1: Like it always has been the hot mom car, and
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: now it was like it was like the like gen
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: X hot Mom car, and now it's the like each
- 1:06:11Speaker 1: generation of that car has been the hot mom car
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: for its respective generation. And now you see that like
- 1:06:18Speaker 1: the millennial women love that thing. There's like maybe ten
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: of them running around, all moms.
- 1:06:23Speaker 2: But it is, it is. It's a soccer mom car
- 1:06:25Speaker 2: to me, like the Lexus just it will never get
- 1:06:28Speaker 2: rid of that image. I think the land Cruiser is
- 1:06:30Speaker 2: way cooler.
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: I know how much you love your wife. I have
- 1:06:32Speaker 1: never seen your eyes straight. I have never well, I'm
- 1:06:36Speaker 1: looking straight and I see them come by. If you
- 1:06:40Speaker 1: want to look like a soccer mom by the Lexus,
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: you're just look at that theme that commits me and
- 1:06:44Speaker 1: then you're like, oh, there's a it's attractive.
- 1:06:47Speaker 2: Notice attractive. So you do have the soccer mom version
- 1:06:52Speaker 2: of the land Cruiser. Officially, now that we get the product,
- 1:06:56Speaker 2: I still call the two fifties produ It is a product. Yeah,
- 1:06:59Speaker 2: maybe that doesn't mean anything to people anyway, which is
- 1:07:02Speaker 2: an amassing. Those are super popular everywhere in the world.
- 1:07:06Speaker 2: But what else there's really in terms of competition. I mean,
- 1:07:09Speaker 2: I guess inherently the Wrangler is kind of there. I
- 1:07:12Speaker 2: think so, I think the Wrangler. I think that Stilantis
- 1:07:16Speaker 2: has a problem. I think that their entire product line
- 1:07:19Speaker 2: is outdated. I think that, you know, where the j
- 1:07:23Speaker 2: L was like an evolution not a revolution of the JK.
- 1:07:27Speaker 2: It looks dated now, the drive lines dated, you know.
- 1:07:31Speaker 2: Then they're doing some like weird stuff where it's like, oh,
- 1:07:35Speaker 2: you have to have a manual transmission with the V
- 1:07:37Speaker 2: six because we're going to force you into buying this
- 1:07:40Speaker 2: Alpha Romeo two Leader that nobody wants, you know, like
- 1:07:44Speaker 2: the Europeans are going to ruin Jeep like this. Maybe, yeah,
- 1:07:51Speaker 2: probably like that their product line is pretty dated. The
- 1:07:55Speaker 2: Bronco is definitely up there. Say that the Bronco's one
- 1:07:58Speaker 2: of the closest competitors too. Yeah, the Bronco is pretty cool. Again,
- 1:08:02Speaker 2: you have that compromise of the are you gonna rant
- 1:08:05Speaker 2: on the Bronco now? I mean, let's talk about the
- 1:08:07Speaker 2: Interior's talk about the plastic in the Bronco. On the Brea,
- 1:08:10Speaker 2: it's just so cheap and the thing is that it
- 1:08:13Speaker 2: costs about the same as like a granite or whatever.
- 1:08:17Speaker 2: But I mean, like, I've never been able to scratch
- 1:08:19Speaker 2: the interior plastic of something with my nail. Yeah, Like,
- 1:08:22Speaker 2: like it should come with a holder for your sunglasses,
- 1:08:26Speaker 2: says white sunglasses only. But the Bronx. But it's a Ford, right,
- 1:08:29Speaker 2: so it's always going to be a good choice. It's
- 1:08:32Speaker 2: a better it's a better vehicle than that. It's a
- 1:08:35Speaker 2: better vehicle than the Wrangler because the Europeans have ruined
- 1:08:37Speaker 2: the Wrangler.
- 1:08:38Speaker 1: I do like the bro I think I think the
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: Bronco is actually really sweet. Yeah, I'm just not. The
- 1:08:43Speaker 1: only Bronco that I don't like is the Raptor to me.
- 1:08:45Speaker 2: You know it again, it's like like the the j
- 1:08:49Speaker 2: L and the JK grew up. I guess it was
- 1:08:53Speaker 2: a JK. They grew up when they had the color
- 1:08:55Speaker 2: matched top. Yeah, and they still haven't done that on
- 1:08:58Speaker 2: the on the bron So the vehicle just looks old,
- 1:09:02Speaker 2: you know, and the little dated, and you know they're
- 1:09:04Speaker 2: having problems with the hard tops cracking and all of
- 1:09:06Speaker 2: this stuff. But it's Ford. They're going to fix it.
- 1:09:09Speaker 2: Like Ford. Ford realistically has in the US, you know,
- 1:09:14Speaker 2: probably the best complete off road product line right now.
- 1:09:18Speaker 2: I mean, everything from that Raptor R isn't mental, it's insane.
- 1:09:22Speaker 2: I was just writing a thing about the New Earth
- 1:09:25Speaker 2: Rummer LTx that came out, and I was looking into
- 1:09:27Speaker 2: the chassis the Cavin chassis has nine hundred and fifty
- 1:09:31Speaker 2: pound feet of torque with the ten speed transmission. The
- 1:09:34Speaker 2: drive lines that Ford is putting out are glass leading,
- 1:09:40Speaker 2: but also GMC, you know GMC and Chevy with these
- 1:09:44Speaker 2: AAV partnerships, but they're all on pickups. They don't have
- 1:09:48Speaker 2: like an s u V. Yeah, they've got to address that. Yeah.
- 1:09:52Speaker 2: And then and then you know, like they brought back
- 1:09:54Speaker 2: the Blazer and they put it on like you know,
- 1:09:57Speaker 2: like the like three hundred credits score, Like I literally
- 1:10:01Speaker 2: can't get approved for anything else crossover, Like why would
- 1:10:05Speaker 2: you buy that thing? Like you're not buying that car
- 1:10:07Speaker 2: because you want to, You're buying that car because you
- 1:10:09Speaker 2: have to. Yeah, and why like why would you why
- 1:10:14Speaker 2: would you ruin that name?
- 1:10:16Speaker 1: Yeah with that car, Like yeah, they could have gotten
- 1:10:20Speaker 1: retro with it. They could have been their bank, Like
- 1:10:21Speaker 1: there was the Bronco, they could have been their Bronco. Right,
- 1:10:23Speaker 1: but even the Bronco Sport is you know kind of
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: that super alternative absolutely, you know, it fits the ethos
- 1:10:31Speaker 1: of the Bronco brand where like, come on guys, like
- 1:10:36Speaker 1: well and especially it's kind of like when we talked
- 1:10:38Speaker 1: about the steering, it's more like GM has gotten so
- 1:10:42Speaker 1: good with their trucks recently, like in the last three years,
- 1:10:45Speaker 1: especially with Dave's involvement. They're so far ahead of the
- 1:10:49Speaker 1: rest of their product line that it makes everything else
- 1:10:52Speaker 1: stand out is really dated.
- 1:10:54Speaker 2: Yeah, but their trucks are like, they're really good, like
- 1:10:59Speaker 2: that at four or x Bison twenty five hundred. Yeah
- 1:11:05Speaker 2: a thing. I'm gonna take a few breaths in between.
- 1:11:08Speaker 2: This phenomenal, But again, not a truck. So, you know,
- 1:11:12Speaker 2: I think if I was looking at the Quartermaster, though,
- 1:11:15Speaker 2: it would be really hard for me to choose between
- 1:11:17Speaker 2: the Quartermaster and the GMC.
- 1:11:20Speaker 1: That's exactly where I'm at. I'm having to choose between
- 1:11:22Speaker 1: me two. Now, this is how I if I had
- 1:11:25Speaker 1: to sum up the Quartermaster in one word or one sentence.
- 1:11:30Speaker 2: Excuse me. It's a heavy duty mid size. Yeah, that's
- 1:11:34Speaker 2: the size of a full size. Uh yeah, it's like
- 1:11:38Speaker 2: the original ton Yeah yeah, yeah, so it's like.
- 1:11:40Speaker 1: A seven eight size. It's definitely bigger than the other
- 1:11:43Speaker 1: mid sized trucks by a little bit, a little wider.
- 1:11:46Speaker 1: So it's like it's a heavy duty, premium mid sized truck,
- 1:11:50Speaker 1: and that's hard to get. So whereas the Canyon eighty
- 1:11:56Speaker 1: four x AEV is a premium hyperf Foremance mid size
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: like off road. I mean this is not about the canyon,
- 1:12:07Speaker 1: but like that at four x canyon off road is
- 1:12:10Speaker 1: absolutely insane.
- 1:12:12Speaker 2: Yeah it is. So it's so good that it's so
- 1:12:16Speaker 2: good that it was silly thirty fives with great suspension
- 1:12:21Speaker 2: front rear lockers. Yeah, so good. The Quarterman, it's Themaster
- 1:12:26Speaker 2: for me, I think that it looks great, but it's expensive.
- 1:12:31Speaker 2: Part of that is because of tariffs. So so how
- 1:12:35Speaker 2: tariffs work for some of our listeners is when the
- 1:12:38Speaker 2: tariff gets applied, it gets passed on to the customer.
- 1:12:42Speaker 2: That's why it's more expensive. And what they're like eighty
- 1:12:45Speaker 2: five grand starting, so you're competing with like I mean,
- 1:12:49Speaker 2: you're looking at like a super duty with a tremor package. Yeah,
- 1:12:54Speaker 2: that's it is, But that's what I mean. It's a
- 1:12:56Speaker 2: protectionist tariff. That's what that's there.
- 1:13:00Speaker 1: Four Quartermaster seven eighth's super duty tremor.
- 1:13:05Speaker 2: Yeah. I think they look cool. Like my father in
- 1:13:07Speaker 2: law really wants it, wants a Quartermaster, but he also
- 1:13:11Speaker 2: tows and he does the things that are expected of
- 1:13:13Speaker 2: a I have never American pickup I drive unique vehicles
- 1:13:17Speaker 2: all the time for my job, and I have never
- 1:13:22Speaker 2: in all of the years that I've been doing this stuff, had.
- 1:13:24Speaker 1: So many such a broad range of people talk to
- 1:13:29Speaker 1: me about a vehicle than the Quartermaster.
- 1:13:31Speaker 2: It's more you mean that the Grenadier kind of blends
- 1:13:34Speaker 2: in just because of the shape. The Quartermaster is just
- 1:13:37Speaker 2: totally different.
- 1:13:38Speaker 1: You know the number of people who are like doing
- 1:13:41Speaker 1: you know, iPhone shots going down I seventeen. It's it's
- 1:13:44Speaker 1: the Defender one thirty, right, I mean it's and it
- 1:13:48Speaker 1: has the same problems as the one thirty Attorney Release.
- 1:13:50Speaker 1: It's the It's the most scotty vehicle I have ever had,
- 1:13:56Speaker 1: So I'm pretty I'm like super smitten by it. I
- 1:13:59Speaker 1: just also like I don't want I just want to
- 1:14:02Speaker 1: make sure I'm considering all.
- 1:14:04Speaker 2: My options for like I mean that the GMC is better.
- 1:14:07Speaker 2: I'm just gonna see in some way, like as a
- 1:14:08Speaker 2: daily driver, no question, but it's gonna be worth about
- 1:14:11Speaker 2: twelve dollars in five years. And it's a GM like
- 1:14:16Speaker 2: like didn't Sinway's like like bed on his previous generation
- 1:14:20Speaker 2: Colorado was literally like split like the side of the fender,
- 1:14:22Speaker 2: dislike the sheet metal tour.
- 1:14:25Speaker 1: Well, I mean it first of all has a lightner
- 1:14:27Speaker 1: rack which doesn't flex.
- 1:14:29Speaker 2: Apparently that's stronger, which doesn't surprise.
- 1:14:31Speaker 1: Me because yes, and then and then Similey drives off
- 1:14:35Speaker 1: road all the like, he drives off road more than
- 1:14:37Speaker 1: anyone that I know, Yeah, other than maybe Bill Burke.
- 1:14:40Speaker 1: I mean, like, like Simwa drives off road all of
- 1:14:43Speaker 1: the time.
- 1:14:44Speaker 2: So he's going between Colorado and LA and then he
- 1:14:46Speaker 2: goes on Derman to go left.
- 1:14:47Speaker 1: Here, so I'm gonna go right here. Yeah, so that dude,
- 1:14:50Speaker 1: that dude has more off road miles on that then
- 1:14:52Speaker 1: I'm sure even the GMA years have.
- 1:14:55Speaker 2: And like the the new generation of these trucks is better, Yeah,
- 1:14:59Speaker 2: for sure. Yeah. I mean if you're looking for something,
- 1:15:03Speaker 2: you know, as a guy that has vehicle add that
- 1:15:05Speaker 2: gets goes through cars very quickly, I don't think that
- 1:15:10Speaker 2: you'd keep the GMC. But I mean I like them both.
- 1:15:15Speaker 2: It's for very different reasons. The Quartermaster is a scotty car.
- 1:15:18Speaker 2: It's it's the most scotty thing I've ever had, but
- 1:15:21Speaker 2: it's like thirty grand more, yeah, because it's almost seventy
- 1:15:31Speaker 2: for the eighty four X. Yeah. Yeah. The big difference
- 1:15:36Speaker 2: is the payload.
- 1:15:37Speaker 1: So the Quartermaster can get it up to eighteen hundred
- 1:15:40Speaker 1: pounds of payload eighteen twenty five to be specific.
- 1:15:42Speaker 2: So so here's my last argument against the Quartermaster the Gladiator. Well,
- 1:15:49Speaker 2: it's half the price. It's it is.
- 1:15:51Speaker 1: Like like no literally, like like you go to the
- 1:15:54Speaker 1: g and it's not half the vehicle. No, And it
- 1:15:57Speaker 1: has great payload too, Like if you get the here's
- 1:16:00Speaker 1: the hack on the on the Gladiator, you don't get
- 1:16:03Speaker 1: the RUBICONV because then you had the four to one
- 1:16:05Speaker 1: transfer case all the other stuff. You go and you
- 1:16:07Speaker 1: get the Willies Edition. Okay, Yeah, so the Willie's Edition
- 1:16:11Speaker 1: has a rear locking differential. You can get it with
- 1:16:14Speaker 1: the max toe package. Yeah, and so you end up
- 1:16:18Speaker 1: with like a seventeen pound payload with the rear locker
- 1:16:23Speaker 1: and the heavy duty axles.
- 1:16:24Speaker 2: Yeah. I still think that the six. I still think
- 1:16:28Speaker 2: the Gladiator is a good choice for international overlanding because
- 1:16:32Speaker 2: I mean it's sold everywhere with that that three to
- 1:16:35Speaker 2: six motor. Yeah, zf trans The parts are cheap, they're afordable.
- 1:16:40Speaker 2: You can get it fixed. But like I'm, I'm you know,
- 1:16:43Speaker 2: this isn't about cheap, but I'm but I'm but I
- 1:16:45Speaker 2: am concerned about cheap. They had a mass at one time,
- 1:16:48Speaker 2: they had a massive brain drain, right, So they lost
- 1:16:51Speaker 2: Mark Allen, he retired, They lost Taylor Langles, they lost
- 1:16:56Speaker 2: Chris Benjamin, like all of the people that were making
- 1:16:58Speaker 2: that great either tired or went to see All the
- 1:17:02Speaker 2: people at AEV.
- 1:17:03Speaker 1: Now that used to be other people who created the
- 1:17:06Speaker 1: Rubicon package or alf of them are at AEV. So
- 1:17:10Speaker 1: there has been a big grade rate. But I like
- 1:17:15Speaker 1: my Grenadier. You like your Quartermaster, and I loved driving
- 1:17:19Speaker 1: the Grenadier across Africa.
- 1:17:21Speaker 2: I wouldn't change a thing it. It's a car that
- 1:17:23Speaker 2: you would want to take on a trip. It's interesting
- 1:17:26Speaker 2: enough to keep your attention. There are some flaws with it.
- 1:17:31Speaker 2: It is a first generation vehicle from a new car company.
- 1:17:36Speaker 2: It is like a solid B plus. But that's great,
- 1:17:43Speaker 2: Like it's brand new, and I think that it's like
- 1:17:46Speaker 2: you know, like I want to like thank sir Jim
- 1:17:50Speaker 2: for doing this, Like there's a car has never existed
- 1:17:53Speaker 2: that's more me or more you, for sure. And it
- 1:17:57Speaker 2: takes Cojones and some money in the bank to make
- 1:18:00Speaker 2: it happened, and I wanted to support it. Yeah, for
- 1:18:04Speaker 2: sure so, and thank you to any offs in that regard.
- 1:18:08Speaker 2: And I think from international travel, let's just touch I
- 1:18:10Speaker 2: want to touch on two things before we wrap this up.
- 1:18:13Speaker 2: But for international travel, the Grenadier is built to purpose
- 1:18:17Speaker 2: for that, but it's not desirable as a vehicle for theft.
- 1:18:22Speaker 2: So we have to remember that if you drive a
- 1:18:25Speaker 2: seventy series land Cruiser in some countries, you are literally
- 1:18:31Speaker 2: it's like the gas. Every piece on it can be
- 1:18:33Speaker 2: dismantled and sold on their street. That's right.
- 1:18:36Speaker 1: So that was one of the things that I felt
- 1:18:39Speaker 1: a lot of peace around driving the Grenadier across Africa.
- 1:18:43Speaker 1: No one knew what it was and no one would
- 1:18:46Speaker 1: be able to do anything with it. They wouldn't be
- 1:18:49Speaker 1: able to part the car out, they wouldn't be able
- 1:18:50Speaker 1: to sell it. They wouldn't even want to be driving
- 1:18:53Speaker 1: it around because you would be driving the only one. Yeah,
- 1:18:56Speaker 1: So even as they become more popular and people use
- 1:18:59Speaker 1: them to cross Africa, they're going to still be super obscure.
- 1:19:02Speaker 1: So it's I think it's one of the safest vehicles
- 1:19:05Speaker 1: that you can drive internationally. It's safer than the seventy
- 1:19:08Speaker 1: series in an accident. It has better safety systems, than
- 1:19:11Speaker 1: the seventy series, and it's not going to be desirable
- 1:19:15Speaker 1: for theft.
- 1:19:16Speaker 2: Yeah, it would be hard to steal because you know,
- 1:19:18Speaker 2: again with the twenty twenty four ad ASS stuff that
- 1:19:21Speaker 2: Europe mandated. There's also some some security features that are
- 1:19:26Speaker 2: quite robust, like robust enough that, for example, Porsche had
- 1:19:31Speaker 2: to stop selling the seven to one eight Cayman and
- 1:19:34Speaker 2: boxed in Europe because they could not get it to
- 1:19:37Speaker 2: meet the specifications business Porsche, right, right, So this car
- 1:19:41Speaker 2: with the BMW kind of piggyback on technology has all
- 1:19:45Speaker 2: of those things.
- 1:19:46Speaker 3: Imagine someone and it has a key, like it has
- 1:19:48Speaker 3: an actual key exactly, And imagine someone hopping in it
- 1:19:51Speaker 3: and trying to figure out the shifter. Yeah, like night
- 1:19:55Speaker 3: out of ten people who get in figure it out. Well, yeah,
- 1:19:57Speaker 3: night out of ten people who get into the Quartermaster
- 1:19:59Speaker 3: can't move.
- 1:20:00Speaker 2: They can't. It takes them a second to figure out
- 1:20:03Speaker 2: how shifter. Yeah, which, once you get.
- 1:20:06Speaker 1: Used to it, it's fine. But like and that none
- 1:20:09Speaker 1: of that is to take anything away from the seventh
- 1:20:11Speaker 1: The seventies series is amazing. I just think that that's
- 1:20:15Speaker 1: another advantage for international travel is you're not going to
- 1:20:17Speaker 1: be a target of theft, petty theft, someone breaking in
- 1:20:21Speaker 1: and grabbing your stuff. Absolutely, but someone holding a gun
- 1:20:24Speaker 1: to your head and trying.
- 1:20:25Speaker 2: To steal your car.
- 1:20:27Speaker 1: No, yeah, so fine, pulling ended on kind of an
- 1:20:30Speaker 1: international thought for that, yeah so.
- 1:20:32Speaker 2: But if you haven't driven one, go check it out.
- 1:20:34Speaker 2: There's dealers. There are dealers popping up, yeah, all over
- 1:20:37Speaker 2: the country.
- 1:20:37Speaker 1: There's one in Phoenix, now there's you know, there's dealers
- 1:20:40Speaker 1: all over the all over the place. So go drive one. Yeah,
- 1:20:44Speaker 1: check it out. Let us know what you think. You
- 1:20:47Speaker 1: can send us a note. Cool, and you can.
- 1:20:49Speaker 2: Send your hate mail to me on Instagram at at
- 1:20:52Speaker 2: Matt Explore and you are at Scott dot a dot Brady.
- 1:20:55Speaker 2: Don't send the hate mailt to me to Scott Yeah
- 1:20:59Speaker 2: he's comment Boston.
- 1:21:01Speaker 1: No, not at all. No, we love it and we
- 1:21:04Speaker 1: thank you all for listening, and we'll talk to you
- 1:21:06Speaker 1: next time.
