- 1:34The Adventure of the Lady in the Dark. The Adventures of Frank Race,
- 1:41starting Paul Dubove with Tony Barrett as Mark Donovan. The war changed many
- 1:53things, the face of the earth and the people on it. Before the
- 1:57war, Frank Race worked as an attorney, but he traded his law forsets,
- 2:01and when it was over, his former life was over too. Adventure
- 2:06had become his business, the adventures a Frank Race. And now we joined
- 2:24Frank Race for the Adventure of the Lady in the Dark. It had been
- 2:32a hot day in Paris, hot and clammy, and now at the coming
- 2:37of night, a thunderstorm crouched above the city, smiling and slashing at everything
- 2:39beneath him. It was a storm worth watching. So mart Donovan and I
- 2:45had satisfied ourselves with the shelter of an awning that covered the sidewalk cafe on
- 2:49Nabou marquardet Poissonier. Oh, brother Ian did something not a cab in sight.
- 2:54We just arned veryment in cabs in Paris these days. Marcuts, particularly
- 2:58around the Marche, push the lights. That one must have been a power
- 3:02station. Only cow is black and a coma his pocket. Well, the
- 3:08rain's beginning of slacking, I almost hate to see it stop. Race,
- 3:15did you get up? No? Why? And somebody just sat down at
- 3:20this table, somebody who ain't saying a wait, oh, look on your
- 3:24cigarette ladder and get a gander at this spot. No, no, do
- 3:29not make elect It would be dangerous, dangerous to whom to a man who
- 3:35thinks you are his friend. If your name is Race, I'm Race.
- 3:38Who's the man? Doctor am Rand? I'm of course I'm his friend.
- 3:44Where is he across the street laning in the doorway? He saw you stop
- 3:47here while it was delighted you and your companion. He's hurt. They shot
- 3:52him a gunt walk. They thought that maybe you would help him get to
- 3:55his hottail cross. I will help him. I wouldn't wait, Hey,
- 4:00what do you know? The lights run again? Mark's whistle was for the
- 4:05girl and it takes plenty of poker due to pucke of the Donovan lips.
- 4:11But this one had it dark hair cut short and curling for lips, a
- 4:15breathtaking sort of face. You would good to him? No, yes,
- 4:18and you? I thought I would define a fiak to move here? Go
- 4:23with a Mark? Why sure you? What's your carriage? Go along with
- 4:26her? Wait a secondent, what is your name? I don't believe I
- 4:30heard you mention it. I crossed the street of the doorway. She had
- 4:36pointed out doctor Amaron. It was a name that brought back a poignant memory.
- 4:44Who is it? It's all right, I'm run Ice, Yes,
- 4:47Ice, Thank Heaven. I thought I thought I knew you when I saw
- 4:51you stop, I turned myself. That's to be you, because Race,
- 4:57I'm in scruborough as I remember it. I'm Aaron. We've been in trouble
- 5:00before you talk to Jannine. She and Mark Donovan have gone for a fiac.
- 5:02Were you staying, amarand squire cleanly and cool? Well, we shouldn't
- 5:10have too much difficulty getting you there even without What is the the race?
- 5:15Someone outside, several men and they fund me. Who are the Amaran?
- 5:19I don Horace. I don't know. They must be handing me because of
- 5:23something from the past. What are they doing now? They seem to be
- 5:27talking it over they no, no, they're coming up the steps. A
- 5:30gun. Do you have one? Race? No gun? Unfortunately, help
- 5:35me up. Come on, we must get into the house before it's too
- 5:39late. It is already too late, Amaran. In the shadows behind his
- 5:45flashlight, he could have been an ape, an ape and a Chesterfield coat.
- 5:49There were three more behind and silent lettle barriers to anyone's peace of mind.
- 5:55I told you I do no good to run Amaran, perhaps not look
- 6:00this time the yards I'm in my favor. This time I am a friend.
- 6:04We are taking you amarand friend or no friend. Look. I mean
- 6:11what he said, and the other means to carry it through. So instead
- 6:15of trying the dicker, I ground a shoe into his shin and slammed the
- 6:17short lived hook to his chair. He went back against the others, and
- 6:21I tried jamming to shut the door, but they piled back against me with
- 6:26a lot of weight, a lot of slugging, until finally that takes care
- 6:34of him. And now, Amaran, we take care of you. I
- 6:47came out of it to the realization that someone was bending over me, someone
- 6:51wearing a perfume that, for the moment made me forget the big throb that
- 6:55was my head. Ye are going to be all right? Race mean,
- 7:01Howsamara? He is not here. There is no one here but you and
- 7:04me? What about Mark Donovan? Still looking for a carriage when we could
- 7:09not find one, I got worried and came back. What happened here?
- 7:13There were just too many of them. Let me try sitting up. What
- 7:17is here? You have not been sure? No, I have an idea.
- 7:21I was kicked after I was not cold, perhaps some conac or something
- 7:26like it. But there is a bar and square cleanium core. We could
- 7:29walk to it from here. You could lean on me if you like.
- 7:32Merci Merci boku looking at her across the table, and the bar took some
- 7:48of the fog from my brain. And this was not by candlelight, but
- 7:53in the uncompromising lay of an electric bulb right above us. It is good
- 7:57they sit down. No, this is not much of the place. It's
- 8:01very good. I can't even talk straight. It's very good to sit down.
- 8:05I'm quite contented being here. Grace. Who is Lisa Krueger? Oh,
- 8:13beautiful woman. She's no longer alive, and you are in love with
- 8:20her. Yes, she died trying to help me. What was she like?
- 8:24Lovely and warm and she was a lot like you. Thank you race.
- 8:31What has Amarand been doing? He has a small hospital body poor as
- 8:35sort of settlement. He's a wonderful surgeon. He could make a lot of
- 8:39money on the other side of the city, but he would rather spend his
- 8:43time with the poor. How long has it been doing. This must be
- 8:48a year now, and you you're his secretary, simply secretary, and told
- 8:56me he lived on the street. You nowhere, No, I wonder if
- 9:00they'd know him here. I have an idea it might be quite important,
- 9:05ben, I shall ask for you. She left me and moved to the
- 9:11bar. A slim figure. Oblivious of the masculine comment, she drew from
- 9:16the crowd. She came back, frowning slightly with concentration. We tend nose
- 9:20humans, so do some of the others. And his lodgings number twenty seven,
- 9:24only a few dozes away. Do you mind? I think I should
- 9:28go there at once. You are still paid. Perhaps i'd better come with
- 9:31you. We moved towards the door to get out of the place. You
- 9:35one of a short flight of steps. It was here we were stopped by
- 9:39two men, one of whom I recognized as Looker. You do not seem
- 9:43to know when you're hard enough. I've had quite enough. Looker. Don't
- 9:46try to give me any more whether you want to know where Amarant leaves.
- 9:50Amarand is my friend, sir. But we know where we leave. We
- 9:54take you there. I prefer to go without you, I say, we
- 10:01take you. He stood two steps above me and plainly intended to have his
- 10:05way, So I doubled up, clutched a handful of his chest afield,
- 10:09and heeled him down the stairs. I lead against the wall, spent from
- 10:13the exertion, and his partner lunched for me. But Janine blessed her threw
- 10:18on a slim tripping leg, and both of them were down. Come lay
- 10:22before they get up. Do you think they made it, brought him here?
- 10:33It's possible, from the sound of it. There's someone in there.
- 10:37You are going here. Take these picked it up when their men dropped it.
- 10:43Pistol. Good girl, stand back now while I open it. All
- 10:46right, don't move any of you. There were three of them, two
- 10:52men and a girl, standing there frozen. Catching a glimpse of myself on
- 10:56a glass on the opposite wall, I could understand their concern. My hair
- 10:58looked as though I just clambed it out of bed. I had a badly
- 11:01battered eye, and there were streaks of blood down my face. To top
- 11:05it off, I had the pistol level in their direction. Is there something
- 11:09wrong? I'm sorry. I expected to find someone else here. I'm looking
- 11:16for doctor Amaran. Well, we've been waiting for him too, but not
- 11:22with a gun. I put the pistol away. She wasn't the type of
- 11:26person you wanted to threaten. She was a blonde with a pretty face and
- 11:30delightful contours. I mentioned my name, and the girl made herself known as
- 11:35Sally Clayton. She introduced the younger man with the near sighted stair as Glenn
- 11:39Young, and the pudgy olda man as doctor Holkar. I told him about
- 11:45Amaran. They stared at me anew what he might be dead, they may
- 11:48have murdered him. Yes, how well do you people know him? We
- 11:54know him very well. We all work with him at the hospital. Any
- 11:56ideas as to why he's in a jam like this, No, I can't
- 12:01tell you a thing. But we've got to get him out of it somehow,
- 12:05Yes, not only for his own sake. But there's the hospital,
- 12:09and there's Pierre Philippe. Pierre Philippe, he's our worried patient right now.
- 12:13Child. He was knocked down by a runaway horse yesterday, and Amaran must
- 12:18operate on him tomorrow. Doctor Holker can tell you that. Well, I'm
- 12:22afraid that even if we do get Amaran back. He's going to be a
- 12:24no condition to handle surgery. Isn't there someone else who can do the job,
- 12:28Doctor Holker? The boys color was scratch or the critical injury in the
- 12:33row endic area. There are three men besides Amarand who could operate successfully Michele
- 12:41Vontin missin the Ribera, Jacques Vissi Missile and doctor Bonavus. Oh no,
- 12:50no, no, Tomorrow is Sunday and no one can find doctor bonav Us
- 12:54on Sunday. It will have to be Amarand it will have to be Amaran
- 13:00or if the boy will die. We'll return of the Adventures of Frank Race
- 13:13in just about one minute, And now we returned to the Adventures of Frank
- 13:24Race. My feeling about the affair was a reaction of physical and mental depression.
- 13:35A friend had needed help and I had let him down. Even the
- 13:39presence of attractive females offered no lift at the moment, but something needed to
- 13:45be done. So I went back to the bar on Squawkling Encore and bumped
- 13:48into Mark Donovan. He shook his head when I told him about what had
- 13:52happened. I can say just how this deal is going to turn out?
- 13:58You can't. Yeah, I can't, no profit, lots of roses and
- 14:01maybe a hearty fray hang over? What are we doing next to we should
- 14:07have done in the first place? Start asking questions. Oh that's fine where
- 14:11well, I'd say this was a likely place. The place is congenial anyway,
- 14:18Tell me somebody, what are we trying to find out? I want
- 14:22to contact a lad called Luca. I have the feeling that a chat with
- 14:26him could be quite productive. Where liquor flows, tongues are usually free.
- 14:35I got nowhere and took a couple of hours doing it, But Mark became
- 14:39the confidante of a lady of the evening, and as a result, we
- 14:43presently paid a visit to a nearby passion, a hotel exuding an atmosphere that
- 14:48could only have come from decades of dust flavored not delicately by garlic. I
- 14:56thought, like, what easy, Hello, Luca? What one thought we'd
- 15:01come in and have a talk. Yeah, yeah, just friendly conversation.
- 15:05I got nothing to talk about. We think you have quite a bit to
- 15:09talk about, and we're prepared to extract it from you. What happened,
- 15:13Hamaran, I tell you this much, but nothing more. We did not
- 15:18keep him with us. The police came as we were walking him away.
- 15:20We had to drop him. What made you attack him in the first place,
- 15:24I saved. I say nothing more. You're going to tell me,
- 15:30and you're going to tell me who you're working for. You have the answers,
- 15:33and I want them as of why don't you try asking me? Jam
- 15:37I got all the answers too. I've never seen this one before. He
- 15:41was young and looked as though he should be selling insurance. He wasn't holding
- 15:46a gun visibly, but both hands were in his coat pockets, and I
- 15:48got the feeling he hadn't been reaching for a cigarette letter. I had a
- 15:52hand in one of my pockets, too, gripping the pistol Jeanine had given
- 15:56me, and I thought that made it a standoff until two other men saddled
- 16:00into the room. What's the matter? Cat got your tongues? So Luker's
- 16:06working for you? Yeah, Luker's working for me. And guys that work
- 16:11for me don't talk, not more than once they don't. An American in
- 16:15Paris must be an interesting story, the effect you've been having on foreign relations.
- 16:19I'm Tommy Janet. It's no pleasure. No, Well, I get
- 16:23void that you was here race, so I thought i'd tag along too.
- 16:27Luck is one of my boys, and I never leave my boys on a
- 16:32hook. He shouldn't have come here barden them race, because it makes me
- 16:37think that if I let you go, you'll just come back and bother'em again.
- 16:42So I can't let you go, ken. I I told myself I
- 16:47could start shooting, but I knew that that could have but one result with
- 16:51three other guns against us mark and I just wouldn't be around anymore. There
- 16:56was only one other out but knocking off an electric bulb from your coat pocket
- 17:00by feel and nothing else. Well, what are you it? A strong,
- 17:06silent type. I guess I'm not very glip. Tonight had a hard
- 17:10evening and you're still having a heart. Even a nature race kind of makes
- 17:15you sweat on it. I get kicks out of seeing guys sweat. Yeah,
- 17:21but you're supposed to be a tough boy, and you got beats the
- 17:25stuff running down your foreen. You misconstrue the significance of my perspiration. Tommy,
- 17:30You're right about my being under a strain, but it isn't for quite
- 17:33the reason that you with you. Let's go on Amarund's hospital turned out to
- 17:51be quite a set up, recently built, all new equipment, a costly
- 17:55installation. Even though it was Sunday afternoon, there were a number of people
- 17:59waiting outside its consultation rooms. Alarmist Clayton. I came in to see if
- 18:07you had any news concerning doctor Amarand news well, with something much better,
- 18:11come with me. With an air of suppressed excitement, she took me along
- 18:15the corridor to one of the rooms. Here, propped up in a hospital
- 18:18bed, his left arm in a sling, was Amarand, Race. You're
- 18:22all right. You were not badly hurt. I think a good night's sleep
- 18:26couldn't handle. But how are you doing? H He just finished surgery on
- 18:30little Pierre Philip. Successful surgery surgery. It had to be done a race,
- 18:34and I think we were lucky enough to bring off a fairly decent job.
- 18:37I learned last night that you'd been able to get away from those thugs,
- 18:41but I never thought you'd be doing surgery this morning. Your I'm deeply
- 18:47grateful for last night. Race. Really, if well, if you had
- 18:51not delayed them, who knows what might have happened this institution, Amarand.
- 18:56It's a revelation. Ace, there's been a great this thing of my life.
- 19:00Wace. I hope it can go on being so. But if you're
- 19:07thinking of these attacks that are being made on you, they can be stopped.
- 19:11Oh well, I wasn't thinking of that alone. You see, there
- 19:18is something else, something that threatens the existence of the hospital itself. Oh,
- 19:25I'm sorry. Oh, don't go away, Glenn. You're not in
- 19:26twitting, Wace. This is Glenn Young another make and who is my good
- 19:32plant? Last night? Hello? Right? Hello Young? Or tell me
- 19:37any luck with Madame des say or. Glenn just finished talking to her,
- 19:42and I'm sorry to say it was a very unhappy conversation. Glenn Young seemed
- 19:48tired. His eyes had a staring look, and his brows were arched high,
- 19:52giving his forehead deep furrows. He took out a handkerchief and wiped his
- 19:56face. Glenn, tell Race about up. It concerns the settlement Race Hospital.
- 20:03Oh responded for doctor Armrand and presented to him by a wealthy old lady,
- 20:08Madame Desaie. Since we don't operate on a profit basis, she also
- 20:14puts the cost of maintenance. But she's become upset because of what's been happening
- 20:18to the doctor. How she heard about it, I don't know. Well,
- 20:22there was a reporter at the police bureau when they took me there last
- 20:25night. He probably called her. You see, Race, Madame de Saie
- 20:30is very devout, and she seems to have seized upon the idea that I've
- 20:36gone along or something that I've become involved with underworld characters. So she just
- 20:41indicated that she intends to alter her will, eliminating the trust claus endowing the
- 20:47hospital with permanent mainten, which you could see would make it impossible for us
- 20:51to upweid more than a few weeks. Tell me, Glenn, how how
- 20:55did she sound? They completely at amounced completely. I don't think we've got
- 21:00a prayer. Well, stop thinking about it, Glenn, you've done your
- 21:03share. Go out and a relax. I'll try and she'll go and see
- 21:10Madame de Saire this evening. Doctor, you cat, you're not willing enough.
- 21:12I'll have to be well enough. It cannot wait. Wait if you
- 21:18can make it, I would like you to come with me, but we
- 21:27weren't able to make the visit that evening. By late afternoon, Amaran's arm
- 21:32began a hemorrhage, a circumstance that combined him for the night. Nevertheless,
- 21:36he appeared at my hotel early next morning, and we reached the Desayer home
- 21:38about ten thirty. An ancient looking mansion. It brought to mind the incongruous
- 21:44thought of a Recocco mausoleum. The elderly servant eyed us as though we had
- 21:48come to sack the place. I hesitated to disturb Madame. She has not
- 21:52yet un for me this late. I had the idea that Madame Dessaire was
- 21:56always an early riser, but this morning she has probably indisposed, but we
- 22:03never to stir her well raptured better this time. She's a very old lady,
- 22:08and Monsieur, you may be right, I shall go to her.
- 22:11At one we were left waiting in the tremendous hall, and it wasn't but
- 22:17a few minutes before a startled whale came from above. I helped Arm around
- 22:21mount the stairs. We moved into a gigantic bedroom. Something happened something too,
- 22:27But then she has been splinkled. It had been done with a cord.
- 22:33She'd been garrotted. The open French windows were thick vines up the masonry.
- 22:37It was obvious how the killer had entered the ol. Lady had struggled,
- 22:41bedclothes were awry, A tray of medicines had been tipped off her nightstand.
- 22:45I picked up two or three vials, a thermometer, a small rubber
- 22:48plunger, and a hypodermic needle. Monsieur Shell, I she'll equit the plea.
- 22:56I am afraid that there's I think else to be done, Grace.
- 23:08We ought to get out of this hotel for a little while. Have you
- 23:11been coiled up in a chill morning? I've been overlooking something on this case.
- 23:15Mark, I feel it. I feel it, something obvious, something
- 23:18right in front of me. Yeah, look, how about this pistol that
- 23:22damn give you you want? We should keep caring it. You know something
- 23:26that Jen Dobbs don't like paper coat and rods, you know, especially farner
- 23:30Is. Hey, how about it? M what's that? Mark? Brother?
- 23:37You want to file? Look, you need a glass or something to
- 23:40blass glass. That's it, Marcus, Mark, you've given me the key
- 23:45to the whole thing. Yeah, I have you know. Come on,
- 23:51let's get over to the hospital. We were on our way through the lobby
- 23:55when I was tagged for a phone call. It turned out to be I'm
- 23:57around. I think again, it seems to be the same group. I
- 24:02spotted some of them just outside the hospital. I think they're waiting for me.
- 24:06You're at the hospital now, Yes, I came in the back way
- 24:08through the seller. I'm calling for my office. I could call the police,
- 24:12but that would serve nothing. Those boys would just drift away and get
- 24:15back to you later. We'd better take care of it ourselves. I'll be
- 24:18there. I'm around. In a few minutes. There were two of them
- 24:26standing just inside the hospital entrances, Mark and I went in. I sensed
- 24:30that Tommy Jennis must be around somewhere and lurker with amarand in his office were
- 24:36Glenn Young and Jeanine Reynold. Oh, it's good to seas. I cannot
- 24:40seem to make this well. I just can't take this sort of thing as
- 24:42I used to. If Van and Jeanine hadn't been with me, I'm afraid
- 24:45I'd have to shout what do we do, race, try to sneak him
- 24:48out, or make a fight of it. I believe the place to settle
- 24:52it is right here. I wish I knew what they were after. They
- 24:55simply want your hospital, amarand his hospital, and those eyes of yours are
- 25:00bothering you again, aren't they here? This might help the suction cup from
- 25:07my lenses. What did you find it? Well, you dropped it beside
- 25:11Madame Desayer's dead body. You're one of those people who can't wear contact lenses
- 25:17for more than a few hours, aren't you, Glenn? Get pretty uncomfortable?
- 25:19Don't they make you stare? Make you stop blinking? What are you
- 25:22getting at a race? And man, I'll give goodas that Glenn Young has
- 25:26some sort of a power of attorney from you concerning this hospital. Yes,
- 25:30after Early is the manager and should anything happen to me, that's right,
- 25:34he's your good friend. He intended to have something happen to you. Doctor.
- 25:38You were all set to be put out of circulation so friend Glenn and
- 25:41a hood by the name of Tommy Janis could take over. Then this wouldn't
- 25:45have been a free clinic any longer, would it, Glenn? And you'd
- 25:48have cleaned up, particularly with Madame Desaya's trust fund taking care of expenses.
- 25:52That's why you murdered her, isn't it, Glen? Because she told you
- 25:55she was going to cut that off. Tommy, listen this fellow father explain.
- 26:00Then I head it off from the other side of the door. Nothing's
- 26:02gonna make any difference, Glenn. We just take care of all of them.
- 26:06That's we're all going down the hall. People nice and quiet. Keep
- 26:11your hands away from your pockets. Race, Ross hut plastic. Thank you
- 26:18again. Friend. Marcus was really nutting. I don't think any of those
- 26:22other lads are going to come in here. Not no with the boss out
- 26:26of action, Stay with Yard, Glenn, don't get any ideas about running.
- 26:30Tell me Janie, look at him. He's gonna be all right.
- 26:37You know something, what Marcus, that guy is really a smart cookie is
- 26:41Yeah, what do you think of he picks a hospital to get shot In
- 27:07the Adventures of Frank Race, starring Paul Dubove with Tony Barrett as Mark Donovan
- 27:12comes to you from Hollywood. Others heard in tonight's cast were Jean Bates,
- 27:18Michael Ann Barrett, Gerald Moore, Wilms Herbert, and William Johnstone. This
- 27:22series is written and directed by Buckley Angel and Joel Murcott. The music is
- 27:26composed and played by Ivan Ditmarks. Be sure to be with us again this
- 27:30time next week. For another dramatic chapter in the Adventures of Frank Race Art
- 27:36Gilmore Speaky. This is a Bruce Elves production. Welcome back well, Gerald
- 28:15Moore appearing with his standard French accent. If you are a longtime fan of
- 28:23Gerald Moore and old time radio, you'll perhaps better remember that accent as the
- 28:30voice of mister le Blanc from Armis Brooks, where he played the high school
- 28:37French teacher in a few episodes. But here he does actually, I think
- 28:45a better job sometimes. I think his French accents. There was one episode
- 28:49and let George do it where I didn't think it was well done at all,
- 28:52But here I think it sounds pretty passable for Hollywood of the era.
- 28:57Well, we turned out a listener all manson feedback and we go to iTunes
- 29:02for an iTunes review from Jay, who writes, this is a great podcast.
- 29:07Adam presents a huge variety of classic shows and with very well informed comedy
- 29:15commentary. Excuse me, some of the shows these covers are known to all
- 29:18Sherlock, Holmes, Poirot, Nero Wolf and so on, but many I'd
- 29:22never heard of before I started listening to his podcast. I particularly like the
- 29:26lighter shows such as Kendy Manson and Leonatis Witherall. My twelve year old son
- 29:33Thomas listens to them with me. You might expect that as time goes on,
- 29:38the choice of good shows would decline, but Adam's recent selections such as
- 29:42Frank Race and The Fat Man are as good or better than those that have
- 29:47gone before. Keep it up, Jay, Well, thanks so much,
- 29:51Jay, And definitely one thing I do try with the show, I don't.
- 29:55I didn't try to put all of the best shows right up front.
- 30:02I love every show and that's we do. There are a few old time
- 30:10radio detective shows that I don't care for, Danger Doctor Danfield stands out from
- 30:17the West. But I've always trying to have a variety of different programs that
- 30:22will be entertaining to what different listeners want to hear. And if you go
- 30:26to Big Less Do Great Detectives dot net, we have a list of all
- 30:29the shows that we do plan on doing eventually, and I think right now
- 30:33we're at about fifty sum shows that are yet to come. And part of
- 30:38that was that there was just such a glot of detective programs. Some of
- 30:45the programs when we only have two or three episodes will nonetheless do everything we
- 30:49have available, so hopefully we'll keep a good, consistent quality throughout our entire
- 30:56run, and I appreciate your comments. We will be back tomorrow with a
- 31:02life in your hands, and next week be listening for our listener support campaign,
- 31:06which will start a week from today on the Adventures of Frank Race.
- 31:11In the meanwhile, send your comments to Box thirteen at Great Detectives dot net,
