- 0:00Now we're back live at Hartford of the Duncan Music Lounge with Coach Shirley on
- 0:04Mike Christina and just wrap it up. That final four run you got by
- 0:08Gonzaga. That Miami game, that one worried me. I gotta say,
- 0:12they got all these guys getting paid a lot of money, like four hundred
- 0:15and fifty grand or something. A couple of guys from miamis over this.
- 0:18They fought over it. A couple of guys said, I ain't staying unless
- 0:21I get what that guy got. And I'm thinking to myself, we are
- 0:24playing against a couple of guys that are making a lot of dough doing this,
- 0:28and it feels like it's not the same game. But we were playing
- 0:31so well I felt like we're going to handle this. But that was a
- 0:34good team. Yeah, for them to beat Texas in that Elite A game
- 0:38and you know, to get to Houston, like for them to beat Texas
- 0:44in that regional in that game with the way Texas was playing, they were
- 0:49just really good offensively, and we played an incredible defense in that game.
- 0:55They were they were like top three in the country in offense, and we
- 0:59just we shot him down and got separation real quick. Hawk was feeling terrible.
- 1:07He was struggling physically going into that one, so, you know,
- 1:11and we didn't get as much from him as we normally did. But Madama
- 1:15had his trees in the beginning of that game and did what great players do.
- 1:19Like just when you make shots like that in the beginning of a game
- 1:21and you're playing in front of seventy five thousand people on that stage, you
- 1:25feel like a puppet, right, yeah, yeah, and your best player
- 1:29has got to make some plays early in the game just to get everyone to
- 1:32relax, and they did that. And for those of you who haven't been
- 1:36in front of seventy five thousand basketball fans, it's outrageous. I've never seen
- 1:40anything like it. It's bigger than life. It's bigger than anything you I've
- 1:45ever been in. I don't know about you, but man, that's that's
- 1:48a way different environment than most of us face. It's like being on a
- 1:52stage like this, but it's just I don't know how many people here,
- 1:56this like seventy four nine and seventy more people, you know, and the
- 2:00depth perception, and then you go and do your first couple of workouts there
- 2:06and these guys are they can't even dribble, and they're they're they're shootings.
- 2:09They're missing badly, you know, because the depth perception in there. But
- 2:15you know they get enough time in there where they adjusted. Yeah, at
- 2:19one point, I think in one of those practices, you had guys diving
- 2:23on the floor. You were talking about doing it, then you did it.
- 2:25Why'd you do that? Our practices are different, We practice different.
- 2:30We hear it a lot when people come watch us, whether it's or recruits
- 2:34or NBA people or media people. Our practices are just they're intense, and
- 2:40they're fast paced and they're intense. And but you did that at a final
- 2:47four. That was kind of unusual. I think. Yeah. I mean
- 2:50I think for us, or I learned from my dad, is like practice
- 2:53settings. My job is to stress them out, like stress them out in
- 2:57practice so that they're dealing with with game type of pressure and practice. And
- 3:01then when I go to the game, I just I manage the game and
- 3:06I try to build their confidence, you know, so practice drive and push
- 3:09them, get more out of them, stress them game night. If I'm
- 3:14yelling at the players on game night, like frantically that I suck as a
- 3:19coach. I'm just yelling at the refs, right, so when you see
- 3:23me, that's but that's that's what I learned from my dad, and it
- 3:27was just like genius coaching in terms of the way he prepared his teams.
- 3:31Yeah, So how hard is that for you to not go in that direction?
- 3:35When game night comes and you're we're gonna be at Kansas this year,
- 3:38get zag out in Seattle. There's gonna be some hostile crowds. Yeah.
- 3:43I think every year just as a us, the players and the staff and
- 3:47yourself to just to show growth, show improvement, be a better coach.
- 3:53You know. I anticipate just being a much better coach this year and be
- 3:57able to control my emotions better, dial it up when I need it.
- 4:01But for the most part, you know, show more willingness defensively to do
- 4:08some different things. It's like every off season you're trying to add and get
- 4:12better. Yeah. Speaking of big environments, Yukon faces North Carolina at the
- 4:15Garden, Indiana, maybe Texas or Louisville in the next few weeks, how
- 4:20do you anticipate your young guys are going to deal with that? I mean,
- 4:23that's the world's most famous arena. Now, yeah, I mean that's
- 4:27there's some big spots. But you got to bring in people with that good
- 4:30pedigree, you know that that have good makeup and just tough people and tell
- 4:38to people. But there's no doubt we're we've got a lot of young guys
- 4:42in the rotation this year. There's gonna be one's gonna start and then you
- 4:46know two, maybe three will play. So and that's not you know,
- 4:50typical of a lot of teams in the country, minus you know, maybe
- 4:55a couple of the bigger places. But when people are talking about like Marquette
- 4:59right now, no one's talking about any freshmen. When people are talking about
- 5:02Creton right now, no one's talking about any freshmen. You know, when
- 5:06when you're talking about I guess uh, I don't know Michigan State, there
- 5:12are some freshmen. So you know that That's always been my model, like
- 5:16attract young talented players and use the portal when you need it and trust your
- 5:21player development. I brought some reading material for you here. It's the it's
- 5:26one of those preseason magazines. I'm looking down. I don't see Yukon in
- 5:31the top ten here in this particular one. I guess what is that this
- 5:35is Lindy's. But I'm just writing that I think you should put this in
- 5:42the locker room, and who stilly gets? Who are there? At least
- 5:46I got cleaning on it. I got cleaning there. But I read a
- 5:48bunch of these things and I kept reading. I'm going page back, I'm
- 5:50paging back. I'm going where the heck's are yukon with all the champions here?
- 5:55Yeah, I mean listen, with all due respect, yes, listen.
- 6:01The other coaches, for the most part, don't know what we have,
- 6:05and I don't really know what they have, nor do I really care
- 6:08what their team looks like right now? You know. And when media people,
- 6:12national media people come to my practice, like I notice people I've got
- 6:17I use all of my senses, so they don't want They're not like watching
- 6:21my big eyes and like studying our defensive integrity and our offensive execution. They're
- 6:29playing with their phone, you know, like they're not evaluating what our team
- 6:33looks like and studying it at the level that you need to to make a
- 6:39real assessment. And so I laugh at it. I was gonna say,
- 6:44how do you handle that? Because I always get upset when I see wait
- 6:46a minute. This team deserves more credit to start the season than this.
- 6:49But can you use that, I guess is my question. It was over
- 6:54It was overblown how much we talked about it internally last year, in the
- 6:57fact that we weren't ranked. I might have mentioned it a couple of times.
- 7:00But if I have to use that to motivate you, then we're not
- 7:05gonna be good enough to go. We need to go. All right,
- 7:09answer that question, we'll be back. We'll take a look at and get
- 7:12a little analysis from coach on the Big East. We've got some great teams
- 7:15and it will be back in just a moment. The Yukon Men's Basketball Coaches
