- 0:56I want to encourage you to pick up your copy of All I Needed
- 0:59to Know I Learned from Colombo and it we take a look at life lessons
- 1:04from seven Great Detectives. We begin, of course, with a look at
- 1:07their history and then take a look at the lessons that can be drawn from
- 1:11it. The book features Colombo, Monk, Sherlock Holmes, Neural Wolf,
- 1:17and many others. And it is available for the iPad, for the nook,
- 1:22and for the candle, and we're actually working on an audiobook version.
- 1:26All right, Well, I received an email from Michael Galia and I have
- 1:33searched everywhere for it, and he made the point that the lineup became a
- 1:38television show. It was also known as San Francisco Beat. Now San Francisco
- 1:45Beat was the syndication title kind of like Bad seven fourteen for Dragnet. It
- 1:52was a pretty successful show. It was received an m A nomination in nineteen
- 1:57fifty six and ran for sixty page from nineteen fifty four to sixty It started
- 2:02on television the year after it went off of radio, and the star of
- 2:07that effort Walter Anderson I played detective Lieutenant Ben Guthrie and Tom Toley or Warner
- 2:16Anderson excuse me, and Tom Tolly played Inspector Matt Grabb. They located the
- 2:23story in San Francisco, something this show doesn't do. It does not give
- 2:29a specific city. It just says it's in a great American city. Now,
- 2:36whether that was so they wouldn't have to conform to any specific cities procedure,
- 2:42Why they did it that way in this episode, I don't know.
- 2:46But there were certain programs in the Golden Age or radio where they happened in
- 2:51cities, but they never named them. Let George do it of course was
- 2:53another one, all right. Well. The first two episodes we listened to
- 3:00were from the summer replacement series. The Lineup was picked up as a regular
- 3:06series in September, and the first episode of that new regular series that was
- 3:15broadcast on Saturday was Churchez la femme and then a woman murdered by convict.
- 3:25This is the third episode of the new regular series and it's entitled gas Station
- 3:35Robbery and Murder. From September sixteenth, nineteen fifty So sit back and enjoy
- 3:42my transcription. We take you now behind the scenes of a police headquarters in
- 3:46a great American city. We're under the cold, glaring lights. We fast
- 3:50before us, the innocent, the vigorant, the thief, the murderer.
- 3:55This is the lineup, all right, by questions mighty little You can't seem
- 4:32to get enough sleep lately, Jack of the spelt like that aliant bed can't

- 7:32to scare think she got the nagging again in that curtage thing she didn't even
- 7:36touch. She has a freak back concussion. Yeah, I figure we're even.
- 7:41How do you figure twenty years of nagging and giving me a nameless stomach
- 7:46hostess and telling it nearly breaking up my home in certain time. Okay,
- 7:49turn us some of my fifth prints against me, making me lose to Chucky.
- 7:53She nearly driving me into institution. I figured where we step back?

- 8:07Where is that? Eric? I six? What do you work?
- 8:13What do you work? I don't know. I haven't had a job in
- 8:16a while. And he went. The man who tried to hold me up
- 8:22shoting car, hold on my three for interrogation. You can save us all
- 8:43a lot of time. Who was the guy driving the car? What guy?
- 8:46Why don't you make it easy? I was alone. You walked into
- 8:50the Brenner's grocery store and trying to stick it up. Okay, there was
- 8:54a guy waiting in a black Mercury today. I walked and I wasn't no
- 8:58black mercurys at down. The clerks identified you in the line had men.
- 9:03I walked into the store and tried to stick up. The clerk says,
- 9:05he saw you get out of the black mercury. He's crazy. When the
- 9:11officers showed up you and for the car, and the guy driving pulled away
- 9:15before you could get to it. I would just run it. I didn't
- 9:18run for no car. Even the officer says, you did. Look,
- 9:22maybe there was a car, maybe it was a black Mercury Sedan, But
- 9:26I wasn't running for it. Why hold out the guy driving ran out on
- 9:28you? Why try and protected? Look? I tell you I was alone
- 9:31walk and I wasn't. Three other robberies this week have identified that black sedan.
- 9:37I'm telling you I was driver. I don't know. They get a
- 9:41lot of time to find out, all right, can find out. I
- 9:45don't know you were in that car when it drove up. I was walking
- 9:48like you walk from you walked from someplace to that store? Yeah? Where
- 9:56I was on Lincoln? What we're doing on Lincoln? Walking? Just walking?
- 10:01Yeah? Planning to stick up? Yeah? Where were you before you
- 10:05started walking on Lincoln? What home you live in? One hundred and sixty
- 10:11in Madison, Yeah, and we're on Lincoln. Were you're walking? Where?
- 10:13What block? I don't know. I was just walking close to the
- 10:18store, I guess. And that would make it about the eleven hundred Blunt.
- 10:24Yeah, you're walked all away from one hundred and sixth and Madison to
- 10:28the eleven hundred Blunt and Lincoln. Well, not all away. What did
- 10:31you do? Take a street car? Yeah? I took a street cart?
- 10:37What gun? What car? That's right? The Lincoln car one hundred
- 10:41and sixty in Madison. No, I walked to Lincoln. Why did you
- 10:46pick the Brenner's grocery store? Oh? I cased it. It's a good
- 10:52setup. Come on, mon, I'm telling you you're took the Lincoln street
- 10:56car. Yeah, you're walking one hundred and sixth and Madison. That right?
- 11:00What time with that? But what time did you catch the Lincoln street
- 11:03car? I don't know. Now, harbor holders take up. I don't
- 11:09know. I don't remember exactly. How long would you say it took you
- 11:13to get to eleven hundred Lincolns? Look what goofference? Does it make?
- 11:16We just like no, We're gonna keep finding out things until you tell us
- 11:20who was to lead black monkeyy sasan with you? What time you take it
- 11:22off? Eleven hundred Lincoln? Lensky got right? Yeah? Where nine one
- 11:37four East? Staring right? Don't take it? Well? What's the matter?
- 11:46A guy driving that black Mercury sedan just telling up a gas station on
- 11:48East Orange shot the attendant. So what do you want me to do about
- 11:54it. Thomas was driving that car. I don't know. He attendant's pretty
- 12:01bad. Well, I can't help it. I didn't blow him up.
- 12:03I didn't stick up the station. You know who did? No? Okay,
- 12:07Malinski, let's go fe Hi then strong. They just hauled him away.
- 12:31Was in pretty bad shape, and they witnesses the other attendant. He
- 12:35was across the streets having dinner. He's in the station. Did you get
- 12:37the licensed numbers? No? A lot of people heard the shot, but
- 12:39nobody got the license numbers. Bill. Yeah, this is Bill Phillips.
- 12:46Been Bill's lieutenant, Juthrie and Jargeant Cargan. Hi, Hi, tell us
- 12:52about it? Everything you told me, don't It really isn't much. I
- 12:54was across the street in the diner right over there. The big Sea brought
- 12:58barbecue. U huh. Well, I finished and started for the station.
- 13:03I heard the shots and looked over and saw some guy jump into a buck,
- 13:05looked it in and drive away. I didn't get it at first.
- 13:09Where was your partner? Harbor was stumbling out the door. That's when I
- 13:13got it through my thick skullet. Something that happened, But I ran across
- 13:18in Harbor was unconscious. Yeah, this guy who jumped into the black mark?
- 13:20What do you look like? I don't know. It happened so fast.
- 13:24I wasn't sure anything was wrong at first. Now fast things can happen.
- 13:28Yeah, he was tall, I guess. Oh, I don't know
- 13:33what he used to trying to describe him when I can't, I'd like to
- 13:37be able to, but really I can't. Nobody else saw it happened as
- 13:41he's out trying to find somebody, but I don't think he's going to have
- 13:43much luck. Wasn't anybody else in the station, and this isn't a particularly
- 13:46crowded section. What direction did the mark go? Bill that way? West?
- 13:52Okay, come on, Pete, let's go back and talk to Malenski.
- 14:07Who was he? My man's kame? I don't know. I don't
- 14:09know. How can I tell you when I done? Look, I told
- 14:16you I wasn't even nobody. I was alone. I walked the Lincoln.
- 14:18I caught a street car on a Lincoln from one hundred and sixth Street.
- 14:22Yeah, yeah, yeah, IM ain't getting off with a lot of sentence.
- 14:24If we knew, would grove you to that stone. Look, I
- 14:28told you, I took the street car for Madison. Yeah, Madison runs
- 14:33parallel with Lincoln. I mean from one hundred and six. We picked that
- 14:37guy up and he says you were with him in that car. We'll name
- 14:41you for withholding evidence here you kidding? How long did you walk on Lincoln?
- 14:46How long? How long did you walk on Lincoln before you try to
- 14:48stick up the grocery? I got him all? Maybe a half hour?
- 14:52I don't know. I don't remember. You just walk Yeah, yeah,
- 14:54I walked, I walked, I walked. I told you which way,
- 15:00but I don't know. I was getting ready to pull the stick up.
- 15:03How do I know which way? And you took the street yeah yeah yeah?
- 15:09Drink yeah? Oh okay, well and ski? Yeah that guy you're
- 15:24a friend in the black much ship culture. I don't know nobody in a
- 15:30black mark the guy he shot in the gas station just dying letter? Tell
- 15:39us? Okay, how is he? His name is Walker? That Walker?
- 16:03Walker is a number ten manager in four. Must be on the next
- 16:11fire. Yeah, go up and cover the home, all right? Yeah?
- 16:17Are you the manager? Yeah? Please? Okay, what do you
- 16:19want? I'm a tenant? Get three? Okay, what do you want?
- 16:23Your name? If you don't mind. You have a tenant here,
- 16:27which one ten? Walker? Number ten? What's he done? Would you
- 16:33just like to talk to him number ten? But don't make a lot of
- 16:37annoys, mister Simpson and nine works night. Well, i'd like to key,
- 16:40please, I can't do that. I have a warrant. Why don't
- 16:44you just go up and talk to him? If he ain't done nothing serious,
- 16:47I'd just like you to cooperate. Look, mister, the last time
- 16:51you've coped with you your hold some guy out and there was a lot of
- 16:53trouble my tenant. We're trying not to make any trouble. Well, if
- 16:57Walker ain't done nothing serious, this is hurt. He want us to break
- 17:02down the door. You cannot, can't you? Missus? Harsh? Who
- 17:07is it a sergeant? Quaint car? Garage man? Oh, you're looking
- 17:11for him to walk as car? Yes, and we'd like to go upstairs
- 17:14and see if Walker is in this room. Okay, and we'd like to
- 17:18key. Okay. They try to keep it as quiet as possible. We
- 17:23will try. She could get in trouble and doesn't like cops. Seems the
- 17:29last time I'll always here a tenant's complain. I should stick up the garage.
- 17:33Can it's in for number ten? Thanks, I'm I suggest to stay
- 17:38in your room. You don't have to suggest nothing, Charny, you better
- 17:44stay down here and cover the front door. Right. I went down,
- 17:52listened to ten. Couldn't hear anything. Let's go in and take a look.
- 18:00Some guys snowing up a storm at nine and mister Simpson farts night and
- 18:04get over on the emphaside. Oh, I don't think he's doing it.
- 18:18Let's find out. Yeah, and get that room. No, kitchen doesn't
- 18:37even look like he spent the night. I don't want to see what we
- 18:41can find. Let's see it's starting here. If we don't find anything,
- 18:45let me go check with that blonde Molensky told us about Nancy Shelton. Yeah,
- 18:51Walker was seeing her as much as Lensky said. She might know where
- 18:53we can find him. Hey, right, he's noticed guy at number nine
- 19:00quit snran, probably rolled over on the stomach. Why's small? He should
- 19:22be various. I've been a girl in the room. There's a girl in
- 19:26the room, all right, but it isn't Walker's girl to roommate. Nowhere's
- 19:30none. See Shelton, This clerks that she went out about an hour before
- 19:33I got here. Doesn't know when if car takes taxis? And what's the
- 19:37roommates? Man? And Bernice Edgington. I saw her when she came down
- 19:41to get a paper. Pretty girl, you haven't talked to him, I
- 19:45said, good morning. He'd have to do that quite a master. I
- 19:48hope at Walkers wasn't there. I got a call here of Walker's shows,
- 19:52and I'll let you know. And what's the room? One or four second?

- 20:33Where don't you go so early this morning? But I know I was
- 20:36asleep. I woke up just as she was leaving. What's wrong? What
- 20:38did you do you know? Stan Walker? Dan Walker? Yes? Do
- 20:44you know him? I knew it well, Dan got himself in trouble.
- 20:48I knew it how did you know him? It's no good. I never
- 20:52did like him. I told Nancy she shouldn't ought to go running around with
- 20:56him because he's no good. Good Nancy have gone out to meet him this
- 20:59morning, I don't know. I guess she could. I look, NaN's
- 21:02a nice kid. If Dan did something, she didn't have nothing to do
- 21:06with it. How longer? I just about six or seven months. I
- 21:10didn't like him when he girt came here. You know, Harry Molenski,
- 21:14Harry mt if he understands, Yeah, short, dark, kind of mean
- 21:19looking. That's right. I met him. He's been up there a couple
- 21:23of times. Nan tried to fix me up with a date, but I
- 21:27didn't want to. I didn't want to go out with no friends. To
- 21:30stand, I just have a like stands from the beginning, and I didn't
- 21:33want to go out with nobody with a friend of him. Nancy didn't say
- 21:37where she was going. No, honest, what's Dan done? He's in
- 21:41a lot of trouble. I know it. I know it looks fellas.
- 21:45NaN's really a great girl. I've lived with her, but maybe get to
- 21:49her now. Look, yeah, yes, blond girls that drove up to
- 22:00Walker's apartment in the black Market. She went up to Walker's apartment and it
- 22:03keen to got some of his clothes quiet natural killing her. Oh gosh.
- 22:08I told her to stay awayte on him. I told her she should have
- 22:12listened. But I'm up in the coffee shop. Was pretty crowded in there.
- 22:30Lash's in the sheep back the suitcase. Met him here he's got on
- 22:34doc right, No idea what train he's taking? Uh? I hate to
- 22:40take him in the middle of all this corn. Oh, we can do
- 22:41it fast, four of us. I don't think you're trying to use this
- 22:45gun. You and I should stay behind us, and when we do it,
- 22:48step in him and get the girl right. Oh? Hold, so
- 22:52they are any of the trains there's actually might be just as well pick him
- 22:56up from the train, away from all his con don't stick together on the

- 23:44of the train. Okay, go ahead on, how do you want to
- 23:47do it? And I was a coach, so I'm still gonna be too.
- 23:49There are many people in there. You take the girl right there,
- 23:59he is, make a good Let me go a hurt. He's running up
- 24:10that way. He's out of the yard. You say, might hurt.
- 24:21You're buying a line of cars. I kick that in d star walker.
- 24:30Stop you stay here. Claimed I'll go over and put in a call.
- 24:45Yeah, he's the girl, all right, bring him along. What happens?
- 24:49I have a place, Sam said, Look, I just got it.
- 24:53Clearly didn't know he was in trouble, didn't you. No, he
- 25:00just told me to pick up his coat. Why didn't he pick him up?
- 25:03I don't know. He said he was in a hurry and he couldn't.
- 25:08How'd you get his car? He dis it to me, but he
- 25:12couldn't get his own clothes. Okay, so anywhere it was in some kind
- 25:18of trouble. I didn't know it was this serious. I didn't have nothing
- 25:22to do with miss. One of the things that makes our job tough.
- 25:27People like you, Please go to chill day that his threw please, oh
- 25:36yes, is everything all right? Yeah? Hell miss did walk up by
- 25:41his ticket under his right name, m hmm William h h and there's a
- 25:48reservation that's not going to be yours coach four or three and the name Williams
- 26:10welcome back. Well. One thing that was somewhat A couple of things were
- 26:14somewhat conspicuous in this episode. The big one was the absence of Wally Mare,
- 26:18which led me to initially question whether this actually occurred in nineteen fifty Wally
- 26:25Mare would die later on while the series was going on in December of nineteen
- 26:34fifty one, but he was actually ill for quite a while before that,
- 26:41and so sometimes he would be off the show. So his absence definitely was
- 26:45missed but covered well. And after Wally Mare dies, the character of Pete
- 26:57Carger actually becomes the prime the prime character in terms of a sidekick to Ben
- 27:11Guthrie. The other thing that's very different was that those first two episodes we
- 27:15heard were written by free Can and Fine, and as far as I can
- 27:25tell, they didn't work on the series after that summer. And this definitely
- 27:30has a feel to it that's more dragnet. Their version. Kind of when
- 27:34they were writing it, it kind of seemed like a mix between Dragnet and
- 27:40Broadway is my beat, particularly that one line where last week's episode. I
- 27:45thought about it after I'd recorded it, but there was that line in last
- 27:49week's show where Grabs told Guthrie that the owners were upset because the car that
- 27:56had been used in the murder had been scraped matched, and Guthrie declares,
- 28:03I bleed for them. That was definitely the any cloverism here. We're definitely
- 28:07in a different mode of more Dragnet like mode, with a lot more professionalism
- 28:17in the way things are handled in a little bit less emotion. All right,
- 28:22Well, that'll actually do it for today. Join us back here next
- 28:26week. We'll have another episode of Lineup in the meantimes. Andrew comments to
