- 0:18I'm Jessica and this is Teba K Rambles, where a couple of
- 0:20friends review Korean dramas. And I'm back for a new episode,
- 0:25a new K drama. And today I'm joined by the
- 0:28incredible Sarah from K Drama. This slash the cohost of
- 0:32Afternoon Ask podcast. How are you, Sarah?
- 0:36Hey, I'm so excited to be here, Jess.
- 0:38So thank you so much for inviting me.
- 0:41Yes, I'm absolutely thrilled that you're here.
- 0:43I think I asked you on this episode like January or February
- 0:48of this year. We're now towards the end of the
- 0:51summer and I feel terrible that it's taken this long to get
- 0:55here, but I'm thrilled that we were both able to watch the show
- 0:59that we're going to talk about today.
- 1:00Do you like Brahms, A musical K drama?
- 1:04And we're going to do a nice deep dive.
- 1:06I forgot to preface this by saying that I was going to ask
- 1:11you this question, which was how did you get into K dramas and
- 1:15see dramas and all the rest. Oh right.
- 1:18Well and so I my background, for those of you who don't know me,
- 1:21I'm British Chinese, so my parents are from Hong Kong.
- 1:24So I technically been watching Asian dramas.
- 1:27So Hong Kong dramas, like way before any Western dramas or any
- 1:31other dramas really. Because, you know, so I'm, I'm
- 1:34sufficiently old, right? We only had one TV in the house
- 1:36when I was growing up and like after dinner and the programming
- 1:39for the cartoon stops. Then it like my parents like
- 1:43this is like our TV time now and so you can sit and watch TV with
- 1:47us, but it's Hong Kong dramas or you can go to bed.
- 1:50And I was like, I don't like going to bed.
- 1:52I'm gonna stay around and watch these Hong Kong dramas.
- 1:55So. So technically I've been
- 1:56watching sees Hong Kong dramas trying to Hong Kong Chinese
- 1:59dramas all my childhood. So since I was young and I was
- 2:03very lucky. So I'm a child of the 80s and
- 2:06back then TVB, which is like the main Hong Kong broadcasting
- 2:10channel, was like in its. Golden era, so people that you
- 2:13might know so like Tony Lung who played the Mandarin in Shangchi,
- 2:19the Marvel movie like. It was his heyday, you know,
- 2:22like he was an opera. So he was my original, my
- 2:26original opera, like my crush when I was growing up and and
- 2:30then Andy Lau, who he was in a movie with.
- 2:34It's like a big star. And so in fact, you probably
- 2:37know Crouching Tiger and Michelle Yeoh and Jackie Chan,
- 2:40like this is their era. Like, this is the era that I
- 2:42grew up. So I think we kind of all
- 2:46acknowledge that Hong Kong drama is just it's not really where
- 2:48it's at anymore, but back in the day.
- 2:51And Leslie Chung he gets like regularly kind of name dropped
- 2:54and he was hugely properly in career.
- 2:56I don't I didn't realize until I started watching K drama and I
- 2:59see references to him and his movies all the time now.
- 3:03So obviously he was really big in career.
- 3:06So yeah, so grew up with that and then K dramas.
- 3:09So again there was like this this.
- 3:11So in Cantonese I'll say Daichung gum is I think it's a.
- 3:15A really old, very popular K drama that charted like the
- 3:21history of a female physician. So my first proper K drama was
- 3:44during Lockdown. Like it's historical drama, but
- 3:25it was huge in Asia. And like my parents were
- 3:28watching it like just kind of binging and binging it.
- 3:32And I remember dipping in and out of it, but I just wasn't
- 3:34really like getting it. And and they were binging.
- 3:36So they were like doing like way into the night.
- 3:38And I was like, I'm, I got to sleep.
- 3:40So I. And so, similar to many others
- 3:47crash lending on you. Was.
- 3:49My gateway drama. My gateway drama.
- 3:52And yeah, it was like an experience, right?
- 3:56So just so I'm a romance reader. I've always been like a lifelong
- 4:01romance reader. And I was just like, what is
- 4:04this drama like? They literally put.
- 4:07Everything in it, you know? Like, they don't, they don't
- 4:10limit themselves. They don't limit themselves,
- 4:13right? Like, they're gonna just Chuck
- 4:14everything at this drama. And like, I got to the end and I
- 4:18was like, my God, what is this? I've got like the worst
- 4:20hangover. I was playing the soundtrack
- 4:22like over and over. And I was like, I think the only
- 4:25way I can cure myself in this hangover.
- 4:28It's just to rewatch the whole thing, cuz I've just gotta do
- 4:31like I've just gotta see them again and do more crying and
- 4:36like, yeah, and then I feel like I can lay this drama to rest and
- 4:40and then that's it. Down the rabbit hole I went and
- 4:43like, I don't think I've watched barely any Western dramas since
- 4:46Crash landing on you. And that's basically now my mini
- 4:49journey. My God, I love to hear.
- 4:53I love to hear people's origin stories and how you grew up in
- 4:57the heyday of Hong Kong cinema and television and how that's
- 5:01really just segued into talking about key dramas because the
- 5:06pandemic made us all rethink life and, you know, changed our
- 5:12our watch habits tremendously. And I'm so thankful for crash
- 5:17landing on you, which we have covered on the podcast.
- 5:19I had my OG cohost Rico watch it and I was like, you don't
- 5:24understand. This is like the gateway drama
- 5:28for so many people. I was like trying to like how
- 5:31make him understand the gravity of like what he's just watched.
- 5:35And he was like, yeah, like he just did it.
- 5:40It wasn't necessarily the gateway drama for him.
- 5:43So and then I have been really sucky at choosing dramas for him
- 5:50to watch because every time we come on here or he does a show
- 5:53an episode with me for Tibak, he's like, it was fine.
- 5:57He's not like riveted by anything.
- 6:01He's just takes it all in stride and he's like, this was good,
- 6:03this was bad and pretty even keeled.
- 6:06And I haven't hit like a sweet spot where he's like that was an
- 6:09amazing show. The only one that he's pretty
- 6:12much said that about is Signal. I need to work that.
- 6:17I still need to work that cuz I'm such a need you fan so.
- 6:21My God, me too. Yeah, I have that out there.
- 6:25He's doing like a fan. Me, I'm so I'm about to fly to
- 6:29Asia for a holiday, for a family holiday, and I've been.
- 6:34I've been like, just scouring the net to see if anyone is
- 6:37doing a flipping fan meet while I'm out there.
- 6:39Yeah. But unfortunately everyone is
- 6:42going either just before or just after I'm there and I'm like,
- 6:46oh, they're like in a different city altogether.
- 6:49So I think he's just been to Manila or like Sewing Gook is
- 6:52nearly in Manila. Or like, you know, there's just
- 6:54like. But he was in Singapore earlier,
- 6:58which is where I'm going to. And I was like, ah, you couldn't
- 7:01do your fan meet in August when I'm gonna be there.
- 7:04Like, I so wanted. Like even just, I'm just so
- 7:08curious, right. So like, what happens on a fan
- 7:11meet, right. Same I was about.
- 7:13I mean, like if your dad meets are like an enigma.
- 7:16Exactly right. If you're not, if you're not an
- 7:19idol singer and you're not doing like, dance performances, like
- 7:22what are you? And then do they speak in
- 7:24Korean? And then people like, do they
- 7:27does somebody live, translate or like how do you like what do
- 7:31they do on fan Meets? I agree.
- 7:34I have so many questions that can be answered.
- 7:36They're just going to a fan. I know.
- 7:41Well, thanks again for chatting really quick.

- 9:02start talking about do you like Brahms?
- 9:04As always, nonspoiler and then spoiler section, and we can get
- 9:08into it right now. I'll go ahead and start us off
- 9:10with the MDL synopsis, which reads in defiance of her
- 9:15family's opposition song, now gets accepted to the music
- 9:18school of the same university where she originally majored in
- 9:21business. As she's seven years older than
- 9:23her classmates, she finds her new academic life daunting and
- 9:26struggles to find strength. One day she hears June Young
- 9:30playing Palma Hey, which I think that's how you say it.
- 9:34It's in German and I looked up the pronunciation and I think I
- 9:38just butchered it anyways, but. It's the Trauma Ray.
- 9:42Trauma Ray for the those who don't speak German like me.
- 9:47Anyway, this song comforts her doing.
- 9:49Young is a talented pianist who started playing the piano when
- 9:52he was six. He's been friends with Jung
- 9:54Kyung and the granddaughter of Kilmu Group CEO for a long time
- 9:58and is in love with her. When he decides to keep his
- 10:01distance from Jung Kyung, he meets Sona.
- 10:05So this show is a pandemic show. It aired from August to October
- 10:082020. It is 16 episodes long and it's
- 10:12directed by Iun Zong. He's also directed In The
- 10:16Interest of Love, which just came out a few months ago.
- 10:19It's a 2022-2023 show and that's pretty much it.
- 10:22This director hasn't done any other directing work.
- 10:26It is written by Riu Bori and this this screenwriter only has
- 10:32two writing credits. It's Do You Like Brahms and
- 10:34Trolley from 2022 and then This stars Pakun Bin as Tesuna and
- 10:42she is a child actress. She's still acting 30 + T V
- 10:45credits. You might have seen her recently
- 10:48in the King's Affection and Extraordinary attorney Wu, which
- 10:51we have covered on the podcast. And then her costar is Kim Min
- 10:56Jay, who plays Pak Jungyong. I will hereby call him here
- 11:00after call him JYP for further remainder of the episode because
- 11:05that is way easier than saying Pak Jungyong.
- 11:09Min Jay has had a really good few years, I've said this
- 11:13before, but the pandemic has done really good things for his
- 11:16career, just like it's done really good things for other
- 11:19actors and actresses. He was in Delhi and Cocky Prince
- 11:22in 2021. Boom, The chosen Psychiatrist,
- 11:27one, one and two both seasons, and then most recently in
- 11:30Bloodhounds, which is a Netflix original from just this year,
- 11:342023. You might have seen him in other
- 11:35things like I I always think of him as the King, the young
- 11:40version of the King in Guardian, The Lonely and Great God.
- 11:44And then he's also in Tempted, which is a Cruel Intentions
- 11:49remake, basically. And yeah, you might have seen
- 11:53him in some other stuff. So that's not, that's not all
- 11:55he's been in. How do you feel about Pakun Bin
- 12:00and Kim in J as actors and actresses in the industry, and
- 12:05where have you seen them before? This is a great question because
- 12:08actually it's the reason I picked this drama up.
- 12:10So I saw King's affection, loved Pakun bin in this and in that
- 12:16drama. And I was really intrigued by
- 12:19this one. This was my first barring the
- 12:21goblin kind of mini cameo thing. This was my first came in Jay
- 12:25kind of drama as well and I was just blown away by how good they
- 12:29were. And also cuz partner been I've
- 12:33I've seen her in so I kind of watched part of hot stove leaf
- 12:36but I hadn't I kind of it's on hold and she was but she's so
- 12:41different right in that drama she is really.
- 12:44I don't. Have you seen it?
- 12:45Just, I haven't seen hot. So yeah.
- 12:47So it's a sports drama. So that's kind of why I put it
- 12:50on hold, because I was like, anyway, she plays like such a
- 12:53dynamic character and she's really, like just really
- 12:57energetic. And here she's just so
- 13:01completely different, right? Really quiet, really
- 13:04introverted. And in King's affection, like, I
- 13:07feel like she was, you know, really quite alpha, right?
- 13:10Because she was, basically. Like.
- 13:12Playing a king, the most of the drama.
- 13:15And so this role was like a really different side to her.
- 13:18So I was really like, wow, is this like the same actress, you
- 13:22know, so, so intrigued. And then Kim and Jay I, I kind
- 13:26of thought that he was this kind of actor, like this role just
- 13:30was. So it sat so well with him and
- 13:32so easily on his shoulders. And then I watched Darlie and
- 13:36Cocky Prince earlier this year and I was like, oh.
- 13:38Like he is. Wow, he's an amazing actor,
- 13:41right? Cuz he's just so completely
- 13:43different. Like, you know, in that Have you
- 13:46seen Dolly and Cocky Prince? I haven't seen that one.
- 13:50I need you need to watch it, Jess.
- 13:52So, like Dolly and Cocky Prince. Like he's the cocky Prince in
- 13:54the titular. Like he's the titular Cocky
- 13:56Prince. And he is just literally the
- 13:58complete opposite of the character he plays in Brahms.
- 14:03Like he's the closest we have, I think, to a Himbo.
- 14:07As a K drama lead like he is, yeah, he is really like
- 14:13uncultured. He's brash, He's a cocky Prince,
- 14:16right So. And he's way less intelligent
- 14:20than the female lead. And he's very pretty, obviously,
- 14:25and just really shallow and materialistic.
- 14:30And he totally carries it off. And I was just, Oh my God, he's
- 14:33just like chalk and cheese. Like what an amazing actor that
- 14:36he could do both so authentically and make you love
- 14:39him as well. Like you know you could you can.
- 14:42So he goes and gets. He's always dressed in light
- 14:44heads. I know they were not supposed to
- 14:45be talking about Darling Cocky Princess podcast.
- 14:48We like he's, he's in like top to toe in like designer gear.
- 14:52And then we realized that he's actually also a bit tight.
- 14:55So he doesn't buy his designer gear from a designer shop.
- 14:59He's a table that buys them from second hand Oh that's fine.
- 15:03So funny good and but you still love him and that he he just has
- 15:08that connection with the audience I think and then like
- 15:10in Brahms it's just completely different right.
- 15:12He's so reserved. He's so well turned out.
- 15:15He's so you know stoic and but he again makes you fall for him
- 15:20and I just think they're really I I just think it's incredibly
- 15:24hard. I I mean, I I would just say
- 15:27like the genius of this drama, I think.
- 15:29Is that it's about two introverts, Yes.
- 15:33Thank you. And they and they make you like
- 15:36you draw. You're drawn to them and it's
- 15:39amazing. And I'm still kind of a little
- 15:42bit working out what the gene, the genius of how they did it,
- 15:45right. Because it was, yeah, really
- 15:48good. We're gonna circle back to that
- 15:50because I think this is must be a genre or like a subgenre all
- 15:55on its own with two characters that are introverts and how they
- 15:58fall in love and how they navigate their relationship and
- 16:02any misunderstandings that happen in K Drama Land.
- 16:04Because they're not like the typical leads to me.
- 16:09And it's been a really long time since I've seen other than
- 16:12Summer Strike, which is 2/2 introverts falling in love as
- 16:16well and really sweet sweet romance.
- 16:20But. The this two introverts, I feel
- 16:24like it's gone by the wayside, largely.
- 16:26And it's so nice when you come across one of these stories
- 16:29where you're like, there's something really frustrating at
- 16:32times with them, but also very comforting to say.
- 16:35These two sort of fall into each other and have to put themselves
- 16:40forward in different ways, and it's difficult to sell a romance
- 16:45where someone isn't naturally charismatic.
- 16:48Yeah and and so quite like quiet.
- 16:50Not quiet in the volume way but just quiet in people you know
- 16:54and and obviously normally it's it's they'll pair an extravert
- 16:58with an introvert or grumpy with sunshine or yeah and opposites
- 17:02and it was just so lovely to see actually.
- 17:05No, we're going to just find two people that see, you know, their
- 17:10kind of person in this person and and you know, because they
- 17:14open up in a way that they don't with others.
- 17:16And it was really beautiful to watch.
- 17:18Yeah. So quickly we have our second
- 17:24couple slash second female lead. So we have Kim Sung Toll who
- 17:29plays Hansong who is the cellist slash BFF and he will be in
- 17:34Hellbound 2 later this year. He was the 2nd male lead in our
- 17:37beloved summer. He was the president that
- 17:41Vincenzo seduced in Vincenzo in 2021.
- 17:46I just saw him in Sweet Home because we just reviewed Sweet
- 17:50Home on the podcast and so he was in that.
- 17:54Not to spoil anything about his character in that show, he will
- 17:57definitely be back in Sweet Home too, I'm presumably.
- 18:02And then he's been in Arthrochronicles, The Wind Blows
- 18:05and Prison Playbook, as a matter of fact, which I really enjoyed.
- 18:08Prison Playbook. And that's another episode that
- 18:10you can scroll back in your podcast if you didn't listen to.
- 18:14He stars opposite Pak Chi Chi Hyun, who is the second female
- 18:18lead. She plays John Kyung and she's
- 18:22most recently been in Reborn Rich, which I still haven't seen
- 18:25yet, and love all play, which we've also covered on the
- 18:29podcast. It's a sports show, Sports K
- 18:31Drama. You me cells.
- 18:33You might have seen her in you me cells if you saw her in You
- 18:36me cells and you really hate her because she was really sort of
- 18:41annoying and mean and conniving a little bit in You me cells.
- 18:46Yeah, a bunch of stuff that she's been in.
- 18:47But how did you feel about these two and where have you seen them
- 18:51before? So Kim Sancho, can I just now
- 18:55use your your podcast to manifest like a nice romance for
- 18:59him? Do you not feel the same way?
- 19:01I'm just like I like I watched him.
- 19:05I loved him in prison playbook. I think that's my first drama
- 19:07with him in it and then I watched this and but he's such a
- 19:13good actor. He's just such a good actor.
- 19:15Like, really makes he really makes me feel his pain.
- 19:19Like his pain at not being loved.
- 19:22Specifically. And then our beloved summer
- 19:26again the same let's just he's just like constantly yearning
- 19:31like his face is just like And then finally I got to Vincenzo
- 19:36and it's like I've got to say it's a little bit homophobic
- 19:39that kind of whole like section but still like.
- 19:43He just rocks up and he just absolutely delivers it, right?
- 19:46So even in Nintendo he's like yearning and I'm just like,
- 19:50please, could someone please give him a drama where he ends
- 19:55up happy and not yearning? Like could someone just love him
- 19:59back? I.
- 20:00Agree. I think he's way overdue for his
- 20:02own romance. Yeah, for his own leading role.
- 20:06Yes, and he can act really well. I I think everything that I've
- 20:12seen him and I'm like, wow, he's really good.
- 20:14He's different in any in everything, and it might be just
- 20:17that he's choosing projects that are varied and characters that
- 20:20are different, even though they don't end up.
- 20:22With the with the, you know person at the end.
- 20:26But I agree, I think he's he's overdue to to get his own show.
- 20:31Hopefully it'll happen soon for him.
- 20:33And let's manifest that together Will will collectively yearn for
- 20:38that and request that of the industry.
- 20:41And then Poxy Hyun, Have you seen her before?
- 20:44No. This is my first drama of hers,
- 20:47actually, and I think she has a very difficult character.
- 20:51Oh my. God, yes.
- 20:53So I think she actually did quite well in a way because it's
- 20:57I think probably of the all four characters hers was the more
- 21:00complex one to play, so. Yeah.
- 21:04And I went on my own little journey with her and her
- 21:07character. So by the end of it, I was like,
- 21:09do you know what? Hats off to you.
- 21:11You did actually. Really.
- 21:13You really did this character justice, and it was not an easy
- 21:15role. It was not an easy role.
- 21:18And maybe because I came in with my own biases of not liking her
- 21:22from other shows, not not liking her acting, I mean, like she's
- 21:27consistently playing these characters that are, they're
- 21:30testing you. Yeah, OK yeah.
- 21:33And so when I saw her in the show, I was like, oh shit, here
- 21:36she is again. I was like, Dang it.
- 21:39And sure enough, her character is really difficult to like.
- 21:42She's actually quite unlikable and she's prickly and she's
- 21:47irritable and she's jealous, and it's totally fine for characters
- 21:54to be flawed and you know what have you.
- 21:58But in this show, I really was disliking her for the bulk of
- 22:02it. It was only until the last
- 22:04couple of episodes that I was like, OK, fine, yeah, fine, I
- 22:09will allow it. You know what I'm saying?
- 22:12I do. I had the same journey.
- 22:14I had the same journey. Yeah, well I think I can guess
- 22:18what your feelings are, but what were your overall thoughts on Do
- 22:22you like Brahms? I was just so in awe of this
- 22:27drama. Like it's really.
- 22:30Like, it just really surprised me.
- 22:31So when I started it, I just didn't.
- 22:33I kind of started it on a whim. Like I said, I saw puck and bin
- 22:36and I was like, oh, like they're classical musicians.
- 22:39I don't really know much about classical music.
- 22:41So I was like, you know, I'm just going to start it and I
- 22:44might end up like 2 episodes in and just not carrying it on,
- 22:46which is kind of like the thing that I do.
- 22:50But before I knew it, I was like 8 episodes in and I was so
- 22:53invested. I just.
- 22:56Was the writing was amazing that acting was.
- 22:59I just loved it. I think it's so underrated.
- 23:01So that's the other thing because people don't talk enough
- 23:03about this drama. No they don't.
- 23:04They really don't And and I was. So that's partly also it because
- 23:08you kind of you know you like you hear stuff and like someone
- 23:10says oh this is an amazing drama you gotta go and see it or or
- 23:13like it's a really famous you know like genre setting drama or
- 23:17whatever. But no one really talks about
- 23:19this drama and. So I just thought maybe it was
- 23:21just gonna be something that like was a bit of a palate
- 23:23cleanser in between a couple of like big dramas that I was
- 23:25watching. But no, it just and it stayed
- 23:28with me. And This is why it was so lovely
- 23:31that you you invited me back because it was to talk about
- 23:33this drama rather because it was so, so lovely to relive it again
- 23:38actually and just kind of re enjoy it and rewatch some clips
- 23:41and listen to the soundtrack again and just be reminded of
- 23:44how what a great drama this is. And so.
- 23:47It's good that you're doing this so that other people who may not
- 23:50have seen it pick it up and well might be intrigued by this
- 23:53podcast and think I'm gonna give this a go cuz it deserves.
- 23:56It yeah. I can't remember how this ended
- 23:59up on the docket for season 4, but I'm glad that it did.
- 24:02I am really partial to musical dramas.
- 24:06We've covered Dream High on the show.
- 24:07I don't know if any other podcast has covered Dream High.
- 24:10Maybe it's just cuz it's a bit of a torture to watch, but we
- 24:14did the hard work. If you want to, if you want to,
- 24:16no thoughts about that one, then scroll back and listen to it.
- 24:19But I have a soft spot for music dramas and I've feel like I've
- 24:24watched a fair share and this one is very good.
- 24:30I think that I was more annoyed that it was such a slow burn
- 24:35because, and I don't mind slow burns, like we've covered
- 24:38something in the rain, which is pretty slow and some other shows
- 24:42as well, that would fall into that category of slow burn
- 24:45romances. This one's real slow and I think
- 24:49it was more annoying that the the pace at which people were
- 24:53speaking to each other was so slow.
- 24:57And there were a lot of pregnant pauses, which are rife in case
- 25:02Rama land, where people just say something and then nobody
- 25:05responds back for a long minute and then they continue the
- 25:09conversation. And so I had to put this one on
- 25:121.25 speed and that seemed to be a really good sweet spot for how
- 25:18I wanted this paste. Literally that one change of
- 25:23making it 1.25 speed made all the difference.
- 25:27I actually thought on a couple instances as I was watching the
- 25:30last few episodes, because I didn't do this for the whole
- 25:32show, I just did it for like the last few episodes.
- 25:35I thought that the setting had like somehow come undone and it
- 25:39was still. It was just playing on regular
- 25:42speed because it was so believable.
- 25:46I was like they must be talking really fucking slow for me to
- 25:50think that this is actually the regular speed and the thing
- 25:54messed up like the plugin messed up.
- 25:57So. Yeah, it's so funny because I
- 26:00didn't realize till I read what you'd written that the director
- 26:04of this had directed Interest of love.
- 26:07Interest of love. Yes.
- 26:09Did you watch that from earlier this year?
- 26:11Right. So if you find Brahms pregnant,
- 26:15Paul slow, you would. You will really struggle with
- 26:19it. Just.
- 26:20I just thought it was so in I was like, ah, do you know when
- 26:23you find out directors directed two things and you're like,
- 26:26yeah, that makes sense, That totally makes sense.
- 26:28Yeah. But I think, yeah, that, I mean,
- 26:32I think it's a real Marmite drama.
- 26:34I think people who are watching it with me kind of on socials at
- 26:37the time were just like, Oh my God, this is how I hate this.
- 26:40And then there were other people like, Oh my God, this is
- 26:42brilliant. So.
- 26:44Yeah, but that was pretty much my only complaint was this sort
- 26:48of like her taking their sweet time saying things and I don't.
- 26:55I love the content of what they're saying, and I love the
- 26:59way that it's scripted. That's all great.
- 27:01I love that, and I generally love a slow burn.
- 27:04Apparently the show in my mind should have been on 1.25 speed.
- 27:08Like that's the should. Be the regular speed.
- 27:10Yeah, um, So I'm gonna, I'm gonna defend that a little bit,
- 27:14right? Because I for me, I felt like,
- 27:18so I'm not, I don't classify myself as a full introvert and
- 27:24something a podcast, so I can't be that introverted.
- 27:26But I think there's an element, there's an element of like
- 27:30introverts that have to work out what they're saying in their
- 27:34head. Like, I feel like if you're an
- 27:36introvert that struggles to, and this is not obviously not me or
- 27:40you struggles to kind of put our thoughts into words and actually
- 27:45marvel at the way that some people just go, right.
- 27:47Well, this is what I think. And Pam, you know, it's like I'm
- 27:50gonna lay out here with this point and you know, and I have
- 27:53people in my life that that say this to me.
- 27:55Like I just can't. Talk like the way you do.
- 27:58Like, I just don't. My brain doesn't work that fast.
- 28:01My mouth doesn't work that fast, and I can't.
- 28:03Like, I have to work out what I'm saying in my head before I
- 28:05can say it out loud. And I feel like if you're that
- 28:08kind of person, this drama will speak to you because there's
- 28:11these two people and they're grappling with, like, big
- 28:13emotions, right? There's a lot of stuff
- 28:15happening. So I think it was for me very
- 28:18real that it took them so long to respond to each other and to,
- 28:23as you say, with pregnant pauses and things because.
- 28:26They're just people that are kind of still working things out
- 28:30and also not great at expressing themselves and also struggling
- 28:34to kind of put it into words. And I think that they they.
- 28:37And that's partly why I loved it so much, because it was truly 2
- 28:41introverts. Falling for each other.
- 28:43It wasn't like I'm just going to kind of sketch introverted
- 28:47people, but I'm still going to make them drama people and they
- 28:50kind of like be, you know, like Dawson's Creek level of like,
- 28:53you know, like unlike that I could speak about my feelings in
- 28:56a really like intelligent way even though I'm still a teenager
- 28:59type thing. So it was really like believable
- 29:02for me I think. And it added for me added to
- 29:04that kind of authenticity of like these two are truly like,
- 29:07you know, these characters, these introverted characters,
- 29:10You make a fine point and I agree with you.
- 29:12And the just the other day I was on the phone with my mom and I
- 29:15told her that I was really tired because I was interacting with
- 29:21more people. I I just switched jobs recently
- 29:24and I'm spending my days in the office now and I've been working
- 29:27from home for the past few years.
- 29:28And I told her at the end of the day, I'm so tired because I'm
- 29:33talking to people and interacting with people and I
- 29:35have to be on all day long. And that's so different than how
- 29:40I was spending my time during the pandemic and working from
- 29:43home even even more recently. And I told her I'm an introvert
- 29:48and this is taking a lot out of me.
- 29:50Yeah, yeah. And she was like, you're not an
- 29:52introvert. And she like, fought me on it.
- 29:55And I was like, I swear to God, if I am in a social situation, I
- 29:59it takes a lot of effort for me. And when I leave, I'm drained.
- 30:04Yeah, and I love to curl up and I'm a such a homebody.
- 30:09I want to be home and you know, that sort of thing.
- 30:14And maybe I'm way more of an introverted, I'm sorry
- 30:18extroverted introvert now than I was when I was in my younger
- 30:22years. Because in my younger years I
- 30:23feel like I would have full on conversations in my head and I
- 30:27was a much. I feel like over the years I
- 30:31come to understand that there's people that like to just listen,
- 30:36you know, even before even responding, let alone the
- 30:42response that comes after. I just mean, like people like to
- 30:45wait and listen, and they're not quick to insert their own
- 30:49thoughts or quick to cut people off or something like that.
- 30:53And that is something that a lot of people don't don't
- 30:59understand. Like it doesn't compute that.
- 31:01Like, I should just stop talking, you know?
- 31:07And absolutely, I agree with your take that it was very
- 31:10authentic to have these two people be introverts and true
- 31:15introverts and not like, they call them introverts, but
- 31:19they're not really introverts. But I think as an audience
- 31:27member, I was really pressed about the way that they were
- 31:31talking. I'm so glacial pace in some
- 31:36conversations and I and then it's all important to me.
- 31:41I was like, this isn't even like a nothing conversation that
- 31:45these people are having. Every conversation to me was
- 31:48important. Every interaction meant
- 31:50something. And so I was like, I can't skip
- 31:53this. So then I was like, you know, I
- 31:56was like, we have to, let's go like let's move a little.
- 31:59So that's where the 1.25 came from.
- 32:01It is not a blight on the show. It might be just a blight on me.
- 32:05So I I think you mentioned earlier how it was very not
- 32:12slow, but they were restrained basically.
- 32:18And I love the themes of the show and how it's studied music
- 32:23and dreams and the really inside baseball take on the classic
- 32:30classical music. Industry, yeah.
- 32:33Yeah. Yeah, characters and
- 32:34relationships. And there were some other
- 32:38another show that it reminded me of, which was Spring Waltz.
- 32:43I don't know if you've watched that show.
- 32:45It's with Han he or two. I want to say it's 2007.
- 32:51Eight around. There it was.
- 32:53It was late 2000s and she falls in love with a very talented
- 33:01concert pianist. And even though that's a
- 33:06melodrama, I don't know if I would classify do you like
- 33:09Brahms as a melodrama? Maybe some episodes, but not the
- 33:14whole thing. And that show felt had the
- 33:19vibes, like the relationship seemed to have the same sort of
- 33:22vibes where, you know, you had like very thinking, feeling
- 33:29people who just loved each other and appreciated music.
- 33:34And there was drama with the music and you know, all these
- 33:38things wrapped in a neat bow of a Music K drama.
- 33:42So I don't know if you've have you watched a lot of music K
- 33:47dramas? Like, not really, I don't think.
- 33:50Yeah. Have there been.
- 33:53I definitely have watched Dream High, which you just mentioned.
- 33:55Well, yeah. And maybe we'll give that a
- 34:00path. No, I can't really think of any
- 34:03of this that that I have watched, actually.
- 34:07But yeah, there's quite a few, but I think they focus on bands
- 34:11a lot of the time, right? The kpop industry, yeah.
- 34:15But the classical music you've got like spring waltz we have 5
- 34:20fingers, which is a like 30 episode K drama that I didn't
- 34:25even finish watching. I dropped it because I was like
- 34:27this is too long, but it's stars D Tang Wook.
- 34:34Oh, OK, yeah, yeah. And this other guy, He was just
- 34:39in GD son. What's that actor's name?
- 34:44No, I don't know. Anyway, those two are in like a
- 34:47piano rivalry, right? It's totally.
- 34:50Okay. Yeah, and there's this.
- 34:54Special piano in their house that they don't know how it
- 34:58makes such a beautiful sound and.
- 35:02There's a piano CEO company in the mix like it's I was it was
- 35:06like a lot of piano, which what, 5 fingers I guess.
- 35:09Yeah. Yeah.
- 35:10And then Beethoven virus. Oh, oh, go ahead.
- 35:14No, you said G. Chal and I just completely have
- 35:17blanked out because it's a drummer.
- 35:18I dropped the sound of magic. Ah, sound of magic.
- 35:24So I have to go into why? You dropped it.
- 35:25Yeah, I have seen. Another So yeah, that's the only
- 35:28other music drama that I've seen.
- 35:30So yeah. OK, we got.
- 35:32Beethoven virus. We got heartstrings, which this
- 35:36also reminded me of heartstrings because in heartstrings, they're
- 35:40in school, in music school. And it's.
- 35:43One of the members of CN Blue with Oh my God, the girl from
- 35:49Airs, Pakshinay. Is and she plays the kayakum,
- 35:55which is almost like a it looks like a Korean version of a
- 35:59zither. And she plays so she's like in
- 36:03the traditional instruments, like section of the music, not
- 36:09club of the music school. And then he is playing guitar
- 36:14and so he's in like the modern instrument part of the school.
- 36:17And so there's like a rivalry between the traditional Korean
- 36:22instrument people and then the modern guitar and bass and all
- 36:27this stuff. And it's really cute.
- 36:29So I enjoyed Heartstrings back in the day.
- 36:32A lot more music dramas than that, but those ones sort of
- 36:35relate specifically to me, to this drama, and then I also.
- 36:40Mentioned the comp summer strike already.
- 36:43I'm not sure I I have an idea in my head, but have have you ever
- 36:48played or do you play an instrument?
- 36:50I used to play? The piano.
- 36:53Oh yeah I like I mean not to very high up maybe this is what
- 36:57I found interesting right. So I mean this is, this is not a
- 37:01spoiler obviously. So puck and bins character from
- 37:03the start, we know that actually she has had to.
- 37:08Kind of overcome her, her family's disapproval that she is
- 37:12playing the violin, right and she's trying to try and make a
- 37:15career out of playing the violin.
- 37:17And I found it quite interesting for men, kind of an Asian
- 37:20background, that so many of us are encouraged to take piano
- 37:25lessons, classical music, instruments, as an
- 37:27extracurricular thing in order for us to have it on our CV so
- 37:32that we can then qualify and go through university.
- 37:34Like that's a whole like. That's a whole thing, whether
- 37:37you're an immigrant Chinese person or you're living in
- 37:40China, right? That is just a thing that your
- 37:42parents encourage you to do. And there's like generations and
- 37:45generations of people kind of playing in research.
- 37:49But unless. You're gonna?
- 37:50Be a concert pianist, right? No Asian parent wants you to
- 37:55actually then try to make a career out of it, right?
- 37:57They're just like, no, you're gonna.
- 37:59Play it. Competently to put it on your
- 38:02CV, but like God forbid you go and try and make a career out of
- 38:06it, right. Because we want you to go and
- 38:08like I don't know be a lawyer or a doctor or like you know an
- 38:11account or whatever. I we're not.
- 38:12We don't want you to choose something as difficult like her
- 38:15parents say it in the drama right?
- 38:16Like you know, like it doesn't pay and it's really kind of it's
- 38:21not seen as a high profile job and obviously she had a great
- 38:25degree before in business and. And I just found it like an
- 38:28interesting commentary on, like, Asian Society of how they view,
- 38:34how they push their children to do all this extracurricular
- 38:38music lessons but then say, well, no, but no.
- 38:42Creative, like creative arts is not not a career option like we
- 38:47want you to be, you know? Yeah.
- 38:49I thought it was an interesting take, actually.
- 38:52Yeah, I I'm Hispanic. If you don't know, I'm Hispanic
- 38:57and I I didn't. Grow up playing instruments.
- 39:02But I really wanted to learn how to play the piano, so I took
- 39:06started taking piano lessons late in life.
- 39:09I started taking them when I was already in high school, 9th
- 39:12grade, and I think I only took it for like a year or two and I
- 39:18went to miss Hannah Lisa's house, which.
- 39:22She lived in a predominantly Jewish community.
- 39:26She was, I think she was a Holocaust survivor from Namaste.
- 39:29And she would just do piano lessons out of her, out of her
- 39:33little like condo. And she was so sweet.
- 39:37And I remember I went to my first lesson with her and or
- 39:41like consultation, I guess because it wasn't a lesson yet.
- 39:43It was just like, you know, getting to know the the teacher
- 39:46and you know, what is the, what's the timeline here when
- 39:50you're available? And she looked at my hands and
- 39:54she goes, You have very small hands, but I know a lot of great
- 40:00pianists who have small hands. And she was so sweet, she was.
- 40:04Like, you can make it work. She basically was like, it's
- 40:08okay. And.
- 40:11I. Knew nothing.
- 40:12I didn't know how to read music or anything, so I was starting
- 40:14from Ground Zero. And it was like pulling teeth.
- 40:17It was very difficult. And then I had to find the time
- 40:20to practice It was this whole thing, like it was this whole
- 40:23thing to fit into my life. I quit taking lessons with Miss
- 40:26Hen and Lisa because I was failing algebra.
- 40:31My parents were like, it's either you.
- 40:33Practice or you passed your algebra class.
- 40:36It turns out that I'm actually really good at, or was really
- 40:39good at math because I went into.
- 40:42Some college courses and was taking like higher math and I
- 40:45had. I'm really proud of this fact.
- 40:47I had a math professor come and say you should get a math.
- 40:51Minor. All you need is like these two
- 40:52classes, these two three classes, and she mentioned the
- 40:55name of the class, names of the class, and I was like, that
- 40:57sounds terrifying. I'm not taking those classes and
- 40:59getting math minor. Come on, so get real.
- 41:03So it never happened. I have lost all of my math
- 41:07mathematics skills since. So it was just the teacher, the
- 41:12algebra teacher that I had during that tumultuous time that
- 41:15I was failing that class. I blame that teacher because I
- 41:18was good at math. Anyway, that's a tangent.
- 41:21But I I stopped taking Miss Hannah Lisa's classes and I had
- 41:25some really nice memories with her because she used to use a
- 41:29metronome on her on the piano to keep help me keep time.
- 41:33But then when she didn't use the metronome, she would count.
- 41:36And here's what I thought she would was about to keel over and
- 41:39die on me during the the lessons.
- 41:41Because here's what she would do.
- 41:44I can't believe I'm going to imitate.
- 41:46OK, here we go. She would go like this 1231.
- 41:512312 Like I don't. Know if she just couldn't take a
- 41:58breath in between the counting, it would scare me half to death
- 42:03every time she would inhale. When she was saying the number
- 42:10and it was, it was a it. Was really frightening as a
- 42:13child's, as a high school person, I was, I would like look
- 42:16at her like, Oh my God. Anyway, that's Miss Hannah,
- 42:19Lisa. And then when I was in later in
- 42:22high school, we had to choose our electives.
- 42:25I chose three random electives. None of the electives that I
- 42:29chose were what was given to me. I got guitar one.
- 42:33With Mr. Eves in high school, this was a really highly coveted
- 42:39class position. I don't know how it was a God
- 42:42thing because I landed in that class and I loved it.
- 42:45I remember the first day, like 20 kids coming in at different
- 42:49points of the of the one class that I have, trying to get him
- 42:52to sign like the transfer so that they could enter his class
- 42:57and he's like, I'm maxed out. I can't.
- 43:00He was such a good teacher and I loved playing guitar.
- 43:04I played guitar for many many years after that and.
- 43:10I asked my mom today why she never signed me up or my sister
- 43:16up for a classical music instrument like violin, piano,
- 43:21something. Why she never signed us up for
- 43:23ballet or gymnastics or something.
- 43:26When? Those are things that kids sign
- 43:28up for when they're really little, like 5678, and she goes.
- 43:35Well, I took ballet when I was really little.
- 43:37My mom signed me up and I was like, yeah, and she goes, but
- 43:42she forced me to do it and I didn't have any interest in
- 43:46doing ballet. So I figured if you didn't have
- 43:50any interest in it, I'm not going to force you to do it.
- 43:54Like, just matter of Factly And I was like, OK, so I could have
- 43:59been a concert. Pianist and missing Lisa could
- 44:01have been famous for being my teacher.
- 44:04I'm just kidding. I'm just kidding.
- 44:05But that is my experience with playing instruments and I do not
- 44:11play any instruments anymore. Yeah, yeah.
- 44:16So this show. Felt very like her little
- 44:20journey going through playing violin and I was like.
- 44:23I I felt it deep in my bones, yeah.
- 44:26Well, I mean. I'm super.
- 44:27Impressed because they both learnt their instruments, right?
- 44:30So I think part and bin could play violin and then she kind of
- 44:34re picked it back up. Yeah.
- 44:36And then Kim and Jay like actually learnt to play the
- 44:39piano. Like, I'm just so impressed.
- 44:40He had like a month. He said he learned in a month.
- 44:44She learned in a month. How you can't learn.
- 44:47In a month but. Anyway, like, still, I'm
- 44:50impressed. Yeah, it's really impressive.
- 44:51That they played their own instruments in the show and that
- 44:53they looked pretty good. Really believable.
- 44:56I'm sure that. I mean, if I was someone on the
- 44:59production and I had a couple of actors doing their best, had
- 45:03minimal time to prepare to look like professional, a
- 45:08professional violinist or a professional concert pianist, I
- 45:12would dub them with a real person who can look at the
- 45:16footage and actually play something that might be.
- 45:20A little closer to the caliber that they need, yeah, but that's
- 45:25neither here nor there. I'm not taking away from the
- 45:27fact that they actually learned how to play piano and violin for
- 45:31this show. I I think that this drama is old
- 45:42school, and it's really hard to explain how it's old school
- 45:45other than like I already pointed to Spring waltz, which
- 45:47is an older K drama. But I think love rain also.
- 45:53Feels this way where you have two really timid and sensitive
- 45:59leading a leading couple and they're very introspective and
- 46:04feeling and I feel like maybe do you like Brahms has melodrama
- 46:10roots because K dramas of yesteryear in the melodrama
- 46:16genre are. Like this?
- 46:19They feel like this couple where it's like everything is a big
- 46:22deal and all of these conversations are important and
- 46:28you don't have all of this like fluff, so to speak, like empty
- 46:33episodes because everything is interconnected.
- 46:37But anyway, that's the last thing they'll say about that.
- 46:41Was there anything that really surprised you about the way that
- 46:46they portrayed music and the way that they portrayed?
- 46:49The music school and Chamber Orchestra and stuff.
- 46:55No, I. Found it.
- 46:55Well, like I said, I don't know much about the classical music
- 46:58world. So I found it like, really
- 47:00interesting. But I actually really enjoyed
- 47:02that. They made it so relatable
- 47:04because it's still like a microcosm of, like, Korean
- 47:08society within the music world, right?
- 47:10So you know, Kim and Jay is like the superstar of the world.
- 47:17But he's very lonely at the top, you know, like in that kind of
- 47:20like I've just wrapped King the land, right.
- 47:22So we're chebo drama and you know, like all like, you know,
- 47:27he's going through his emotions, but he's alone because he's at
- 47:29the top of the tree and then she is like, you know, right at the
- 47:34bottom of the tree, right. So she is not only, you know,
- 47:37still the student violinist, but she's also not a very talented
- 47:40one and doesn't, you know, isn't isn't getting the spots that she
- 47:43deserves and things. And then you've got some really
- 47:48awful professors, people that are really super selfish.
- 47:52So it felt really like they'd put in like all our very
- 47:56familiar OK drama tropes but within this classical music
- 47:58world, which I I, you know, I really enjoyed.
- 48:02And then I think there's another observation I had, but I think
- 48:05it might be a bit spoilery. So we could leave that till till
- 48:09the till the end. But I I like that they kind of
- 48:11flipped the trope a little bit with the classical music, so.
- 48:14Yeah, OK. Yeah, OK.
- 48:17So I think we're at that point. I think 1 two things.
- 48:21OST, because you mentioned that you were listening to it.
- 48:24Yeah, I love the. Ost loved it.
- 48:27OK, you didn't like it. No, I was fine.
- 48:30I. Just I think.
- 48:32I only. Comment on Osts when I get an
- 48:35earworm and I start and I like add it to all my playlists and I
- 48:39find it's really repeatable. Yeah, but otherwise I'm like,
- 48:44oh, that's. That was pleasant.
- 48:45That was nice. Nothing terrible.
- 48:48About it, it was. Wonderful in the moment,
- 48:50Absolutely. But if you played it to me in a
- 48:53mix with other K drama songs, would I be able to be like?
- 48:57That's Do you like Brahms? Yeah, yeah.
- 49:00I see what you mean. Yeah.
- 49:02No. There's one gummy track that I
- 49:03really liked that I thought was really good.
- 49:05So I mean, it's like still been on.
- 49:08So this drama, I watched it a while ago now, and the OSD
- 49:11tracks are still on my kind of like I have a rolling playlist
- 49:15and then I get sick of them and then I have to shove them off
- 49:19because I can't hear them again. Whereas the Brahms ones are
- 49:22still on there. Like, I'm still listening to
- 49:24them. Ohh, that's so.
- 49:26Nice. Sorry, it's a sign.
- 49:28Of longevity, It's good. Yeah, it is a good.
- 49:32All right, the second thing is what would you rate the show out
- 49:35of five Sojo bottles? 5 being amazing, 0 being
- 49:39terrible? So I.
- 49:41Kind of. Like at the time I gave this A9.
- 49:45Actually, so I'd score out of 10, so I guess the equipment
- 49:49would be 4. But like when I was revisiting a
- 49:51lot of this, I mean, maybe I've mellowed in my like, K drama
- 49:54critique, but I was thinking that I can't.
- 49:57I'd actually didn't, you know, there wasn't a lot that I
- 49:59disliked about it. So but yeah, so probably 4-4,
- 50:02but but OK, yeah, but not because there's like major stuff
- 50:06that I thought this is not so great or they didn't handle this
- 50:09well. So I'm knocking a point off
- 50:11just, you know, yeah. So less that the the there's
- 50:14something wrong with it. Just that it's like it's not
- 50:17knocking out the park. Amazing, yeah.
- 50:20OK, so I think. I'll rate it either 3.5 or 4.
- 50:24I'm leaning towards 4. There's some things in the later
- 50:26episodes that we'll we'll talk about in the spoiler section why
- 50:31that really bothered me, but other than that I think it's
- 50:35really pleasant. It's a really easy watch for the
- 50:38most part, and you should definitely give it a try if you
- 50:41haven't already. I think do you like Brahms?
- 50:49So I said. Is probably one of the more
- 50:45underrated shows for sure, yeah. And I.
- 50:49At the top, I'm a romance fan, and the romance delivers for me
- 50:53on this, you know, like, my problems with this drama are not
- 50:56the romance to say for me. And I think there were so many
- 51:00moments that just made me really feel things, and I think the
- 51:04actors did just such a good job of portraying their emotions.
- 51:09And that they're like eyes was just often brimming with
- 51:13emotions so they could have whole scenes, as she said, full
- 51:16of pregnant pauses. That really made me feel stuff
- 51:20because they were doing so much of their acting through emoting
- 51:24and through their body language and through the way their eyes
- 51:27moved or the way they looked and then looked down.
- 51:30And I just thought it was, yeah, it was really great.
- 51:34I agree. All right, so with that being
- 51:37said, we're going to get into the spoiler section.
- 51:40So if you don't care about spoilers, we're going to, we're
- 51:44going to keep going and you're going to come with us on this
- 51:46journey. We'll be back right after this.
- 51:56You want to come in? All right.
- 51:57We're on the other side of. Spoilers and I think we want to
- 52:01start where you left off. You said you had something that
- 52:05you want to say that was a little spoilery, and so we're
- 52:06gonna start there, right? I didn't mean to.
- 52:09Cliffhanger it, but like it's good.
- 52:12So what I really appreciated because we were talking about
- 52:14classical music and I've, you know, we talked about how before
- 52:17like a lot of people have this on their CV and they try.
- 52:19But I think so many Asian dramas, and I think specifically
- 52:23Korean ones, have this thing of showing people, if you just work
- 52:25really hard, you study really hard, you put your hours in, you
- 52:29will become successful and this drama.
- 52:32Specifically says no, actually, that might not work for you.
- 52:36You could play the violin and be so diligent and be practicing
- 52:41all the time and have calluses on all of your fingers, but it
- 52:46just might not be there for you because that elusive thing
- 52:49called talent, or the thing that elevates a normal pianist or a
- 52:53normal violence to to be some concert grade one is like.
- 52:58A specific magical thing that you can't try 10,000 hours and
- 53:02achieve. And I really loved that they
- 53:05made that part of this drummer. Like, I loved that her arc was
- 53:09that she put the violin away. Like this thing that was like
- 53:13she had dropped everything. Stopped her business career,
- 53:16restarted school, endured, like her classmates kind of basically
- 53:20looking down on her and her being an outcast.
- 53:23And because she was older than them and all the rest of it, and
- 53:26it was still not. Good enough.
- 53:28Not enough. And that's.
- 53:30Just so. Antiphical to K drummers, So I
- 53:33really love that. I love that.
- 53:34That was her arc, and I think so too.
- 53:38I think it's almost on par with being as compelling.
- 53:44As their romance, yeah, is her journey.
- 53:48And her heartbreak with. The.
- 53:54Deep love that she has. For playing the violin and and
- 53:57the violin in general. And that's something that the
- 54:00show also juxtaposes against other students and against JYP,
- 54:07her her. Her lover is that other students
- 54:11who have that quality, that talent, that drive, hate their
- 54:16instrument. And JYP multiple occasions was
- 54:19like I don't enjoy playing the piano.
- 54:24And the. People that want it the most
- 54:28don't have what it takes. And that is a brutal reality.
- 54:34And I remember, like, going through the whole piano and
- 54:39starting late and Miss Handelisa, like being like, oh,
- 54:42you're it's late. You know, because she had kids
- 54:45that were coming in there, like really little and play very
- 54:49well. I have this stupid story that I
- 54:51have to tell. I'd be remiss if I didn't tell
- 54:53it. And so the piano that I had at
- 54:55home that I would practice on was like an electric piano, but
- 54:59it had a bunch of settings and you could play some songs like
- 55:03the piano would like light up and.
- 55:06It would tell you like. What's a press?
- 55:08But the piano itself would play the song on its speakers, right?
- 55:11Whatever piano song and my sister.
- 55:14Had a friend over my sister's 3 1/2 years younger than I am, and
- 55:17so her friend presumably was also young, right?
- 55:21Maybe 3-4 years younger than I am.
- 55:24She had a friend come over and all of a sudden I hear the piano
- 55:27going like they had pressed some buttons and the piano was
- 55:30playing some piano song and I walk over and I was like turn
- 55:35off. The piano.
- 55:36I walk over. Her little friend is playing the
- 55:39piano, and it was so good. I thought the piano was playing
- 55:43it itself. Yeah, like I thought it was a.
- 55:46Track that. Came with the the keyboard.
- 55:49And I was shocked. She had the way her little
- 55:51fingers were flying over the keys.
- 55:53I was stunned. Yeah, stunned.
- 55:56And. I had not for anything, but the
- 56:00little friend was Asian, but I was.
- 56:03Like, I'm never gonna get to that level.
- 56:08Yeah. Yeah.
- 56:11A lot. And I liked the.
- 56:11I did not love it the way that this character loves the violin.
- 56:16Yeah. Yeah.
- 56:18And I think it's also because the drama starts with showing us
- 56:22that she made this momentous decision.
- 56:24Stop it, you know, just go and take it.
- 56:26So you you assume by the end of the drama she's gonna somehow
- 56:30Yeah, she's gonna, she's gonna, she's gonna rocky herself, you
- 56:34know out of and be all like well trained and like, you know, and
- 56:38is scary. It was scary how real it was.
- 56:42It was also scary how she was like a second class citizen in
- 56:45the school, so that. Yeah, yeah.
- 56:47Because of her. Lack of talent, and I thought
- 56:53the drama really started on a carefully.
- 56:58Like, how do I put this? It was humiliation.
- 57:02The drama started with humiliation because it had that
- 57:05whole intro sequence of her getting chewed.
- 57:09Out and humiliated by the conductor who had just dismissed
- 57:12her and the other seat next to her.
- 57:15Because he thought the violin section was too loud and he was
- 57:17like, OK, you're not playing today.
- 57:19She had already like, she was like, but I practiced so hard,
- 57:25yeah. And she started to like.
- 57:26State her case and the conductor was not having it.
- 57:30He was extremely rude and even when she.
- 57:34Said he's like, what is your name?
- 57:36And she starts saying her name, Tesuna.
- 57:38And that means sorry in Korean if you don't know how to spell
- 57:43it, because it's not spelled the same way as sorry.
- 57:45Evidently. And I was like, Oh my God.
- 57:48So it was like this little like who's on 1st gag that was
- 57:50happening because he's like, I I know you're sorry.
- 57:53Stop saying you're sorry. What is your name?
- 57:55I'm asking you your name. It was like, Oh my God, it was
- 57:57painful. Yeah.
- 57:59So painful. So then from there they start to
- 58:02craft this romance. And you, you're taken for a ride
- 58:06because her journey as a violinist as well is extremely
- 58:10important to the show and it gives it's a huge source of
- 58:14heartbreak for for you as the audience member and certainly
- 58:17for the characters. Yeah, and I thought it was
- 58:20brave. I.
- 58:21Thought it was brave, the drama ended with her putting her
- 58:24violin away and just going and saying goodbye.
- 58:27To it she. Literally like has there's a
- 58:29little like goodbye ceremony to her violin.
- 58:31And I was like, oh. I almost cried.
- 58:35When she because this is jumping to the end.
- 58:37But when she sells her violin, I have a story like that.
- 58:41I had a guitar that was collecting dust for years and
- 58:45years. It made the trip up with me
- 58:48after I moved out of my parents house and it was just in my
- 58:49closet and I never played it. I never practiced on it.
- 58:52I was like done with it by that point and I went to sell it and
- 58:57I listed it and you know, I was it was a public place.
- 59:00I was meeting up with these people and I had these thoughts.
- 59:02I was like. This guitar meant a lot to me
- 59:05and I remember buying it with my dad and like playing it in the
- 59:09store and all of the times that I practiced on it and played on
- 59:13it and I was getting really emotional.
- 59:14But then I was like, it's not like it's not living.
- 59:17It doesn't have a good home. I'm not playing.
- 59:19I had all of these thoughts as I was telling the star and the
- 59:22family that came to buy the guitar, they they looked pretty
- 59:28worse for wear. To put it, to put it mildly.
- 59:31And the dad picked it up and started playing the guitar and
- 59:34he played so well, he just played like a little lick.
- 59:36And I was like, this guy's gonna use it.
- 59:38This family's gonna enjoy the instrument.
- 59:41And it was, I was like, here, I would have given it at that
- 59:45point. I would have just given it to
- 59:46them for free because I was like if it goes to a good home then
- 59:49great, it gets played with. Yeah, it's like Toy Story 3.
- 59:53It is. It's.
- 59:55Like Toy Story 3, but yeah, when she starts crying.
- 59:59Yeah. Saying goodbye to the
- 1:00:01instrument. And that she's gonna sell it.
- 1:00:03I was like, Oh my God, yeah. I feel.
- 1:00:07This I feel, yeah, she's. So good at crying as well.
- 1:00:10She really kind of makes you feel.
- 1:00:13Yeah, she's so good. It's terrible.
- 1:00:17They say the name of the show in the show because she asked him
- 1:00:20at the airport in episode one. Do you like Brahms?
- 1:00:24I love when they do. That in shows and in movies.
- 1:00:28OK, it's like a low hanging fruit, but I love it and.
- 1:00:32He says no. He says no, I don't like Brahms
- 1:00:36because of this whole like supposed.
- 1:00:41Love triangle. That he had with Claire and
- 1:00:44Schumann to other composers of the time, and that mirrored
- 1:00:49JYP's own. Tumultuous relationship with his
- 1:00:53best friend's girl and the best friend he.
- 1:00:57Also had like 1/3. Wheeling situation.
- 1:01:16That you had like. And I like that the two they
- 1:01:04learned to like get through their complexes and him not
- 1:01:08liking Brahms. By the end, he's like I only I
- 1:01:11played your your three. Talked to me about in episode
- 1:01:18one and developed this pro music program that got you into this
- 1:01:22internship that was. Really powerful.
- 1:01:25To me that he ends up playing Brahms and you know, he chooses
- 1:01:29these songs, yeah. That mean a lot.
- 1:01:32And she understands because she's part of that world.
- 1:01:36So it was it. Was really nice.
- 1:01:39I'm going to switch gears for a second before we get too sappy.
- 1:01:43I really hated her best friend. Yes.
- 1:01:48OK. OK.
- 1:01:49Yeah, I. Thought I was like being really
- 1:01:51catty about it. But no, no, I really disliked
- 1:01:55her. I found her a bit.
- 1:01:57I just I first of all like I just didn't feel like they were
- 1:02:01friends. Like they didn't feel like an
- 1:02:04authentic friendship. I felt like therefore she was a
- 1:02:08bit because also like so let me layout.
- 1:02:11I am not a big fan of love triangles, so to have.
- 1:02:16Basically 2 two of them in one drama.
- 1:02:19Yes. Was just like I'm a bit over
- 1:02:21them but I mean they I think they did the the kind of the
- 1:02:24Brahms and Clara Schumann thing like mirroring one was OK I I
- 1:02:30could do that but the second one fell forced and and then because
- 1:02:34obviously she is part of the best friend's part of this I
- 1:02:36felt like she was just kind of she just felt a bit yeah bit
- 1:02:40fake and it just didn't feel very authentic and then they
- 1:02:43jammed in this like second love triangle.
- 1:02:46I just. Yeah.
- 1:02:48Yeah, yeah, I. Didn't like it at all.
- 1:02:49It was a little bit icky. The best friend I think in
- 1:02:52episode 3. It's her birthday, right?
- 1:02:55It's Jason Wow's birthday and the friend comes by and says,
- 1:02:59I'm not going to be able to make it to your party leader.
- 1:03:01Here's your gift. And she start the best.
- 1:03:05Friend only comes to drop off the gift and cry and ball over
- 1:03:10the guy. Who now wants nothing to do with
- 1:03:14her? Her ex.
- 1:03:14Which is the crush that Chesungla has on him, yeah.
- 1:03:19And it makes that it. Makes Chesunglass feel really
- 1:03:23small and foolish. And why the?
- 1:03:27Hell would the friend? Do that on the her birthday,
- 1:03:30Yeah. It was like this.
- 1:03:34Isn't about you. Annoying.
- 1:03:35It's my birthday. You know what I'm saying?
- 1:03:38Yeah, it's. You know very.
- 1:03:41Annoying and then? Later on when she basically has
- 1:03:43a go at her for having feelings for him and it's just kind of
- 1:03:48like she doesn't get to choose and she didn't act on them
- 1:03:53because you know, out of respect you and you just chew her out
- 1:03:57for it. It's just kind of like.
- 1:04:00Oh, I was a bit. Like I just wanted to Chuck
- 1:04:02things at her. And then she said.
- 1:04:05Oh, it's not because you liked him.
- 1:04:07It's because you lied to me. That's what she was like.
- 1:04:09Oh, I'm upset at you because you lied to me for all these years
- 1:04:12and I'm like, get the fuck out of here.
- 1:04:14Like. Who would say, hey, I have a
- 1:04:17pretty strong crush on your boyfriend now?
- 1:04:20Your ex and hang the girl code or the bro code like this was
- 1:04:26totally uncalled for and she had she had no leg to stand on.
- 1:04:30It felt like the BFF. Thought she was the main
- 1:04:34character. That's a good take, yeah.
- 1:04:39Yeah, I yeah. I kind of felt like they wrote
- 1:04:41her in that, that, like, she just kept thinking they were
- 1:04:44meant to be, right? Yeah, like her.
- 1:04:46Her and this guy were meant to be.
- 1:04:48And he was just so not into her. It wasn't even the love triangle
- 1:04:51in some ways, because he was really not into her.
- 1:04:58I agree. I agree completely.
- 1:05:01And then they tried to bring her back later.
- 1:05:03I thought this was good, if only the relationship was believable,
- 1:05:08that then of them being friends, because they bring her back
- 1:05:11later when she's really chase someone was really down.
- 1:05:14And the violin repair shop guy who was that part of the other
- 1:05:19bit of that triangle calls the BFF and he's like basically I
- 1:05:25must, we don't see that conversation, but I'm glad that
- 1:05:27he did that, Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:05:30But yeah, that's part of the parts of the show.
- 1:05:32I'm like I could actually done without this bit.
- 1:05:37In episode. Three, we get this sort of like
- 1:05:39conversation at the dinner table.
- 1:05:54Like there's even. Can music comfort people?
- 1:05:44Is music a comfort? And I thought this was a little
- 1:05:49bit of a stupid conversation because I'm like, of course
- 1:05:51music can comfort. Music therapy.
- 1:05:55Now, when I was a kid, there was no music therapy, OK?
- 1:05:59But did you have thoughts about this romantic notion about music
- 1:06:04and the way that some of these players, like these
- 1:06:06instrumentalists, were like? I don't know if music can
- 1:06:10comfort whatever. They were a little bit
- 1:06:12pessimistic about it. Well, I found a macro.
- 1:06:16Like I think it mirrored, like I think it was a really good for
- 1:06:19Kim and Jay's character. So Joe repeats like arc in the
- 1:06:24you know. Like, he's the flip of Sona,
- 1:06:27right? He is so perdiciously talented.
- 1:06:30But piano, piano playing for him brings him no joy.
- 1:06:33He has no joy. It is just a way to make money.
- 1:06:37It's like a thing that's pressure.
- 1:06:38It's the thing that means that he has to take sleeping tablets
- 1:06:41to sleep and it's not something he gets any kind of.
- 1:06:45Joy out of, let alone comfort from anymore, right?
- 1:06:49And I think there is also like a commentary about which I think I
- 1:06:52feel as well, of just what happens when you turn your
- 1:06:56passion and your hobby into a job and it becomes like the
- 1:07:00thing that you just that your livelihood depends on it Does it
- 1:07:04just erode that passion for? So I mean, like, mine's just
- 1:07:07very small thing. But like, I love knitting and
- 1:07:08crocheting. And part of the thing when
- 1:07:10you're knitting and crochets, people meet you and you go, wow,
- 1:07:13wow, you've made this. Like, you should totally sell
- 1:07:15this, right? But like, nobody wants to pay
- 1:07:19actual money for things that have been like, made handmade.
- 1:07:23And the hours that go into it, like your average adult jumper
- 1:07:26would take 80 hours. So if I charge myself a minimum
- 1:07:29pay, like no one's paying me like 800 pounds or like 1000
- 1:07:33U.S. dollars for a hand knit jumper, right?
- 1:07:35That's just not not happening. And.
- 1:07:37And so. Like, but people always go, oh,
- 1:07:40you should do this as a job and so A it's economically not
- 1:07:42viable, but B it's also like, but then I wouldn't be doing it
- 1:07:46for myself, right? It would no longer be my hobby,
- 1:07:50my passion, my joy, my comfort. It would be something that.
- 1:07:54You know, I have to do like, whatever my customer wants me to
- 1:07:57do, even if it's hideous and in the wrong color or whatever, you
- 1:08:01know, thing that might erode my joy.
- 1:08:03And it becomes something that's not, you know, it becomes a
- 1:08:06chore. Because all jobs are a chore,
- 1:08:08right? Even the ones you love.
- 1:08:10So it's kinda. I thought it was.
- 1:08:12I thought it was a good conversation in that sense,
- 1:08:14because it was like asking this general, more general question
- 1:08:17of like what happens to you when actually you've picked up this
- 1:08:21instrument and it must have given you joy at some point.
- 1:08:23But now like several years down the line, does it no longer are
- 1:08:28you almost becoming to? Hate it because it's actually
- 1:08:30become something that you're tied to, you know?
- 1:08:32Absolutely. I think.
- 1:08:34You hit the nail on the head. I think that Jason basically
- 1:08:39comes in and says look. Songs mean different things to
- 1:08:42different people, and one person might derive joy from something
- 1:08:48that you hate. The out of the equation, the
- 1:08:57fact that it's a job for JYP, Yeah, And then he's actually
- 1:09:03suffering. And you know, she kind of
- 1:08:51defines it that way and it still.
- 1:09:03For the craft, totally. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:09:08So. She does have a very romantic
- 1:09:10notion of living and playing music as her career versus JYP,
- 1:09:16who's in the trenches and really feels the strain of this life,
- 1:09:20how demanding it is, how he's constantly living out of a
- 1:09:24suitcase and you know, not to mention the financial strain
- 1:09:28that his family puts on him because his father's constantly.
- 1:09:31Yeah, getting in debt, so. Yeah.
- 1:09:34And then all the pressure. From his agent on staying on the
- 1:09:37top of his game and like, you know, being potentially
- 1:09:40overtaken by some other brand new star in the pianist world
- 1:09:43and yeah, just feel. For him.
- 1:09:46So much during this drama. Like I think he they do.
- 1:09:49A really good job. Of kind of showing how he's
- 1:09:52quietly, like how hard this is for him.
- 1:09:54Mmhmm. And then later on, this
- 1:09:58conversation comes into play. I think in episode 14 where she
- 1:10:02starts to this is when she's. Thinking of giving up the violin
- 1:10:07and she they have like the flashbacks of this conversation
- 1:10:09about music and bringing you comfort and she's like hugging
- 1:10:14the violin as well while she's thinking of all this and she
- 1:10:19goes to. The violin case and the bridge
- 1:10:22has fallen. The bridge has collapsed on the
- 1:10:25violin and you're like, Oh no, that's a little on the nose for
- 1:10:28me personally. Yeah, like that sort.
- 1:10:32Of thing. It happened multiple.
- 1:10:35Times in the later episodes. And I was like, this is a little
- 1:10:37cheap, like, you know we can, we were really smart earlier.
- 1:10:42You didn't need to have the violin bridge collapse to show
- 1:10:45that. Yeah.
- 1:10:48It's yeah, you know what I'm saying.
- 1:10:50Well, actually. Because A.
- 1:10:51Lot of I think the beauty of this show was all the
- 1:10:54subtleties. You know, some some of the stuff
- 1:10:57like I didn't even notice until like afterwards I read like
- 1:11:00other people what they wrote about the drama and stuff and
- 1:11:02I'm like, oh, I didn't even notice that that was so.
- 1:11:05And like I think for example like the way that their
- 1:11:08relationship, like one of the things I loved about them was
- 1:11:10how organically they kind of grew together and the show
- 1:11:14showed. How they came to care for each
- 1:11:16other. And they did it in loads of tiny
- 1:11:18little ways and it was really, really softly done and really
- 1:11:22beautiful. Yeah.
- 1:11:23So the bridge was a bit like, oh, this is a bit K drummer is
- 1:11:26this is a bit. We get the symbolism.
- 1:11:28It's like, yeah, I get it, yeah. It's a little like, you know.
- 1:11:33Spoon fed in episode three he plays cuz she's very cut up and
- 1:11:39it's her birthday. She just had this.
- 1:11:41Thing happened with her best friend who's crying over the guy
- 1:11:44that she has a garage on. It's this whole complex thing
- 1:11:47and she's not feeling up for going to the party and I think
- 1:11:51he's in the practice room and he plays Moonlight Sonata for her.
- 1:11:57And then transitions. It into Happy Birthday.
- 1:12:01Yes. And I was like.
- 1:12:03I was holding onto the wall. I was like this is amazing this
- 1:12:07is. Genius right to do.
- 1:12:09This because she starts. She's like, I don't really feel
- 1:12:12like listening to music right now.
- 1:12:14I don't feel like listening to this song.
- 1:12:17And then? He transitions.
- 1:12:18Into Happy Birthday and I was like, Oh my God, I am sold if a
- 1:12:22boy did this for me, Major Kennergy, but also I would buy
- 1:12:26it. Yeah, so that.
- 1:12:30Yeah, yeah, yeah. I mean, if it just reminded me
- 1:12:33the one thing I have to say when we have classical.
- 1:12:35Having said that, I'm not really into classical music.
- 1:12:37One thing when they do do classical music, I wish they
- 1:12:40would pick some other pieces and not pick like the like the
- 1:12:44literally the most overplayed, like Moonlight Sonata.
- 1:12:48Like in Twilight it was flipping Claire de Lune.
- 1:12:51I was like, just fucking loon. Claire's a fucking loon.
- 1:12:54I'm just like, yeah, let's just like, pick a different fact.
- 1:12:58Let's not all play the same thing.
- 1:13:01That's on like the classical 100 like CD, right?
- 1:13:04Let's just kinda. But yeah, I I was like, come on
- 1:13:08guys, that's I mean, I'd like to learn some other paintings.
- 1:13:11I'd like to learn, you know, find something obscure to love
- 1:13:15and then we could all get to know it a bit better.
- 1:13:17So yeah, that might learn my pet peeve for this.
- 1:13:20I agree completely. I agree.
- 1:13:22I think it was the transition that I was like, Oh my God, Oh
- 1:13:25my God. I hear it.
- 1:13:26It's happening. But then he gets up from the
- 1:13:29piano. Assess asks her, Would you like
- 1:13:31to be friends? Yeah, and then he says.
- 1:13:34No, we have. To be friends and then he goes
- 1:13:37and hugs her and says I'm doing this as a friend.
- 1:13:40Ohh, they were so. Cute.
- 1:13:43Because he's just like. Comforting her.
- 1:13:45And I like their date when they go on their first date and
- 1:13:49they're walking by the wall at the palace, yes, that, he said.
- 1:13:54Multiple times. He likes to take a stroll by the
- 1:13:56palace and she's like, really? I guess it's a little cliche,
- 1:13:59maybe, but I appreciate it. I appreciate these moments where
- 1:14:04you see them just vibing with each other and making small talk
- 1:14:11and having a little bit deeper conversations.
- 1:14:14And it's good. I I liked all that.
- 1:14:17Yeah, I really. What I really loved, and given
- 1:14:19obviously that they're introverts, was just how quickly
- 1:14:21they open themselves up and start telling each other things
- 1:14:24they haven't told their Bff's. About themselves and obviously
- 1:14:29crushes and whatever but just just like opening up it was
- 1:14:33almost like they kind of got like I mean you know I'm as I
- 1:14:35said a romance fan. So I do always love it when like
- 1:14:39two people meet and they kind of realize that they're this is.
- 1:14:44Someone that they. Can bear their soul to a little
- 1:14:47bit like that always gets me. And I think that they did that
- 1:14:50so well right from the start. Right right from the start.
- 1:14:53She's kind of quite honest about how she feels about this, that
- 1:14:55and the other and. Because they're so introverted
- 1:14:59in clothes. Like, this is like the first
- 1:15:00time we as an audience hear some of this as well, right?
- 1:15:02So I think that was really, I thought they did that so well.
- 1:15:06Yeah. What did you think about?
- 1:15:10Him and 2nd Femaley Dongyong together and their hang up,
- 1:15:17which was pretty consuming for a large part of the show.
- 1:15:23So this. So I did struggle.
- 1:15:25With this, like I said, I'm not a big love triangle fan.
- 1:15:31I found her character really difficult, so I think it sounds
- 1:15:34like we had a similar journey in the most of the drama.
- 1:15:37I was like, I just do not like this person.
- 1:15:40Apple. She's.
- 1:15:40A bitch like. My God and also why?
- 1:15:43Does she have? Two.
- 1:15:45Not just one, but two really amazing people fall for her.
- 1:15:48Like, what is? Why?
- 1:15:50Yeah, for what? For what, exactly?
- 1:15:52For what? She's not great.
- 1:15:54No, she looks great. No.
- 1:15:55And and neither of them are with her for the money which is
- 1:15:58something I could I could I'm like OK maybe for the money and
- 1:16:02the the influence because your family is like you know this
- 1:16:05amazing like musical like whatever you know family and for
- 1:16:09the for the prestige of it. But no that's not the reason
- 1:16:12you're with her. You like her?
- 1:16:13Because I don't know. I don't know why you're like
- 1:16:16yes. I don't know why.
- 1:16:18They liked her. She was not charismatic.
- 1:16:22She was very dry. She seemed to have no sense of
- 1:16:25humor. She was rude.
- 1:16:28Rude, yeah. Rude.
- 1:16:30She was mean. To Chesunga as well, Yeah, she
- 1:16:34seemed to have. One expression throughout the
- 1:16:37show and. Which was?
- 1:16:41It was distaste. Like she was annoyed or judging
- 1:16:45everyone around her at all points, and I particularly
- 1:16:51thought that she was cruel. In.
- 1:16:54Episodes 5 through 6 or so, when she breaks up with the cellist
- 1:17:00with the, he'll know like I thought that was terrible
- 1:17:02because she breaks up with him and.
- 1:17:06He's trying. I think they're in an outdoor.
- 1:17:09What are those called? Like the tented?
- 1:17:12Oh, the pojung child. Yes, yes.
- 1:17:16And he's trying to. Convince her that she's
- 1:17:19imploding their relationship for something that she thinks is
- 1:17:21better, which in this case is JYP.
- 1:17:24Yes, but it you know it's not, it'll make her uncomfortable
- 1:17:28eventually that she'll regret it eventually.
- 1:17:30The grass is not always greener on the other side and that.
- 1:17:34She and she still does it anyway.
- 1:17:36She still calls it quits with him and his crying in that scene
- 1:17:41was so good, so. Good.
- 1:17:44So good. I mean, as much as I bitch about
- 1:17:46how, like, it's still like, it gave us that scene.
- 1:17:48It gave us another. Not that we really needed it,
- 1:17:50but another Kimson Cho, looking wounded and like, heartbroken
- 1:17:55and yearning and just like, oh. My heart, my heart went out
- 1:17:59there, you know, our poor boy. But then later, she tells the
- 1:18:03foundation director, Youngin, I think they call her Noona
- 1:18:06throughout the show. She tells her that they broke up
- 1:18:10and he's there. Like Kilno is there in the
- 1:18:12concert hall where they're talking and she goes ape shit in
- 1:18:17front of the Noona character because she's asked him, did you
- 1:18:20intend to marry me? With what confidence?
- 1:18:24Did you think you had anything to offer me?
- 1:18:31Tell me why they. Liked her, she said.
- 1:18:34Shit. Person she is.
- 1:18:36Horrible She's and horrible and also like they kept flashing
- 1:18:41back. Like they kept flashing back to
- 1:18:44that scene in the concert like theater bit where they so this
- 1:18:49is JYP now and and and the sex second male asking female lead.
- 1:18:54And the. The.
- 1:18:55Kind of like confession. That wasn't the confession, But
- 1:18:58I think, I think when we got to like the fifth three play of
- 1:19:01this, you think Flashback. I was.
- 1:19:03Like enough. Enough.
- 1:19:05I'm like a bit over it. Like, actually, could you just
- 1:19:07show me why he liked her rather than this scene?
- 1:19:10This, rather than this scene? Could you show me a time when
- 1:19:13she deserved your adoration? Because then maybe I'd get it a
- 1:19:17bit more. But you know, I know, yeah.
- 1:19:20Yeah, we had. We both.
- 1:19:21Had the. Same issues with this character.
- 1:19:25And then her threatening at various points Chesuna like she
- 1:19:30shows up in front of her house in front of Chesuna's
- 1:19:32neighborhood and says that her and JYP have 15 years of
- 1:19:36history. Stay out of our business.
- 1:19:38Yeah, I was like, what? The hell where did this guy?
- 1:19:42If I was chasing, I'd have no idea what she's talking about.
- 1:19:46Why? Why she would come and tell me
- 1:19:48this? Because at this point, they're
- 1:19:50not even together, really. Yeah, it was crazy it.
- 1:19:54Was it? Was.
- 1:19:56So I completely. Was on Chase on last side, did
- 1:19:59you, did you take sides in their relationship at all?
- 1:20:03Like did you find? That you were.
- 1:20:06Sort of on JYP side as far as he had a lot of the way that he was
- 1:20:11behaving was warranted and you know, forgivable or were you on
- 1:20:16chase on last side? I was chasing our.
- 1:20:18Side Yeah, Yeah. Because there.
- 1:20:20Were there were. Times when I'm just like because
- 1:20:22let's be fair, like as as beautiful as this drama, that
- 1:20:24subtlety. There were also times when it it
- 1:20:26did lean into the tropes right and so like part way like like
- 1:20:29towards the end when it does that whole miscommunication
- 1:20:32thing if she miss her or misunderstands like.
- 1:20:36Him kind of being the accompanist to the second female
- 1:20:39and like you could just explain, you could just talk and you
- 1:20:44could also tell her like your money issues and you could just
- 1:20:48tell her like cuz she doesn't feel like you're talking to her
- 1:20:52right? Yeah.
- 1:20:54You could just talk. You could just talk.
- 1:20:57I mean it gives us antsy scene. So I'm just like, I get it, I
- 1:21:00get it, I get like that's why they did it.
- 1:21:01But yeah, now all the time I did feel like, OK, so first of all
- 1:21:05like, I just feel the drama did such a good job of.
- 1:21:10As we said, making her an introvert.
- 1:21:12But she is so brave. Like she like throughout this
- 1:21:15drama, right. She is consistently putting
- 1:21:18herself out there. And you know, because she's, I
- 1:21:20mean, this is flipping hard for anybody to do, but it must be so
- 1:21:23much more harder when you're such an introvert.
- 1:21:27So she tells him that you like seeing when she tells him she
- 1:21:30likes him. Oh yeah.
- 1:21:32Perfect example. And and you do you want to read?
- 1:21:35The thing because she wrote like an interview she gave right
- 1:21:38about that scene she talked. About that scene and it was
- 1:21:41really touching. The way she talked.
- 1:21:45About their chemistry, and she explained that in episode 6, it
- 1:21:49wasn't that I meant to confess my feelings, but after seeing
- 1:21:52his face, everything just came out uncontrollably.
- 1:21:55I had my hand on my chest and I could feel my heart beating, so
- 1:21:58it seems like she's a little method because.
- 1:22:02She was feeling some type of way during that scene, and you could
- 1:22:06tell that it was authentic and very organic.
- 1:22:10Yeah. The way that it just sort of
- 1:22:12spilled out of her, like I like you.
- 1:22:13Yeah. And I felt.
- 1:22:15It you know like I've been I've been that person that think that
- 1:22:19person that's kind of like I don't think you'd like me back
- 1:22:21and you're like way too like. You know about out of my league,
- 1:22:25which is I think how she feels right.
- 1:22:26This person is so out of my league.
- 1:22:27But oh, like I've got all these feelings and then suddenly like,
- 1:22:31and then suddenly you're asking me what's wrong And I'm just
- 1:22:34like I can't pretend that like I'm OK.
- 1:22:38Because obviously I'm not OK and like black is my feelings.
- 1:22:41And so it felt so real. I was just like and but she was
- 1:22:44so brave as well you know to just bear her heart it it, you
- 1:22:48know in in that situation where she feels like.
- 1:22:51It's just one sided like for her, you know, it's just from
- 1:22:54her side. So she's not saying it to like
- 1:22:56elicit like I like you back. Like I know she knows that this
- 1:23:00is not, you know. Yeah.
- 1:23:03And then the ice cream kiss. Can we talk about the ice cream
- 1:23:07scene? Take it away.
- 1:23:10Take it. Away I made a TikTok about it
- 1:23:12cuz I loved it so much. But absolutely please what did
- 1:23:16you what did you think about the ice cream kiss?
- 1:23:18I just love the. Well, first of all, I love the
- 1:23:21IT turns out that he didn't really like ice cream, so it was
- 1:23:25so delivable. This is so believable.
- 1:23:29Yeah, yeah, that he's. Like I just.
- 1:23:31Do you want to grab ice cream? He basically is just like pulled
- 1:23:34it out of thin air, even though he doesn't even like ice cream
- 1:23:36just to spend time with her and then later on she they're eating
- 1:23:40ice cream together. But he's not eating.
- 1:23:43He's. Not eating it.
- 1:23:44And she's like, what? It's wrong.
- 1:23:47And he's like, I don't really like ice cream.
- 1:23:51So that's really cute. That was already cute.
- 1:23:54As I mean God they're just so cute that was already cute as
- 1:23:57and then they lean in because then the hurt his ice cream
- 1:23:59falls and then she she's like you know you know they're about
- 1:24:03to kiss and and then she does it right she initiates it she
- 1:24:09kisses him and like I'm just like you go girl like you just
- 1:24:14you know like it must also really hard and then.
- 1:24:18And it's just so cute because then she kisses him and then she
- 1:24:21suddenly, like, draws back and sit like you could kind of feel
- 1:24:24like she goes, oh shit, like I I kissed him like, oh, like what
- 1:24:28was I doing? And then he just goes in for
- 1:24:31like round two. And then I'm just like, and then
- 1:24:34and then the ice cream is melting.
- 1:24:36And then we are all melting. And I was like, oh, this is such
- 1:24:39a great scene. I love that.
- 1:24:41Perfect. Yeah.
- 1:24:41She puts down her own. Ice cream so it's like.
- 1:24:44I got to dedicate myself to the sweeter thing and this kiss is
- 1:24:47sweeter than the ice cream. That.
- 1:24:49Right now I. Scene.
- 1:24:52And yeah, she's quite brave, I think even just the fact that
- 1:24:56she went to Business School, graduated with a business
- 1:24:58degree, and then was like, I'm going to go back to school for
- 1:25:01violin. And she'd never played the
- 1:25:03violin before. Wild that.
- 1:25:08Is that is. That's maybe something more
- 1:25:12because. And even her.
- 1:25:14Dad was like, do you? Even, like, are you even
- 1:25:16talented at playing the violin? The family's like befuddled by
- 1:25:23her decision and of course they don't support her, which is
- 1:25:25really sad and. I I don't know.
- 1:25:31I don't know if I like this family at all, but.
- 1:25:34But quite. I guess like in the in the
- 1:25:36social context, I think completely understandable.
- 1:25:40Yeah, I love, I love that she is such a brave character, but she
- 1:25:43doesn't look it right. She's going.
- 1:25:44So it's that juxtaposition of life.
- 1:25:46They don't have to always be warriors and they don't have to
- 1:25:48be like a king in the King's affection and be all like, you
- 1:25:51know, I'm alpha. Like she is so, so, so strong
- 1:25:55and so, so brave. And then even then, later, when
- 1:25:57she she decides that she's going to break up, you know, and she
- 1:26:02does it for herself. To put herself even though she
- 1:26:07likes him so much. She she's like, I'm doing this
- 1:26:12for me. That really organic and also
- 1:26:19really brave and took courage and yeah, I.
- 1:26:13This isn't. This isn't working for me.
- 1:26:17Yeah, and I. Agree completely.
- 1:26:24I like that she she brings up, I think in voiceover can she beat
- 1:26:30time, which is 2 things that she's trying to work out in her
- 1:26:35mind and heart. Can she beat the time?
- 1:26:38That other people have on her. Like as far as her musical
- 1:26:43ability, she is way behind everybody else in school.
- 1:26:47And even his JYP's agent comes and has like multiple terrible
- 1:26:52conversations with her where he's just putting her down and
- 1:26:55giving her reality check that she'd never requested.
- 1:26:58And he's like, there, you can't be time everyone else has had.
- 1:27:04Been practicing and taking lessons for over a decade and
- 1:27:07you're just starting. Like, whether you're good or
- 1:27:09bad, it doesn't matter, You can't beat them.
- 1:27:12And in her, in the relationship between JYP and Jung Kyung, the
- 1:27:16second female lead, it's the same thing that she's
- 1:27:19questioning. Like, can I beat this time that
- 1:27:22they've spent together? Like, I don't have this history
- 1:27:25with him and. How am?
- 1:27:29I going to get you know he's she's everywhere in his life.
- 1:27:33Like she goes to his house. She requests to go to his house
- 1:27:36which is also really brave right Early on in the relationship.
- 1:27:39She's like can I go up to your house And she sees like the
- 1:27:44Hank, the handkerchief that she gave him and he's funded
- 1:27:51basically by her family. His entire livelihood depends on
- 1:27:54on her and. So on and so forth.
- 1:28:05With this, and it's a valid question, yeah, talking about
- 1:28:14the relationship, the elitism, which I think you touched on
- 1:28:17earlier was probably the most like.
- 1:27:57The list goes on with how she's been imprinted all over JYP and
- 1:28:01she said like Jason was like, how can I?
- 1:28:22Frustrating part of the show. To me like never never mind the
- 1:28:25two love triangles and the second female lead from hell, I
- 1:28:29thought the elitism and the way that there is like a clear
- 1:28:33hierarchy in the school and. The music.
- 1:28:39Community. And I couldn't fathom how JYP
- 1:28:43could let his piano competition teacher speak so badly of his
- 1:28:47girlfriend at this point. And how her?
- 1:28:52Internship buddy as well was saying like, why would a world
- 1:28:55class pianist date an ordinary violin student?
- 1:28:58Yeah. Yeah, cuz she's just ordinary.
- 1:29:02It was. It was a lot.
- 1:29:04And I was feeling that along with the character, that was
- 1:29:08something that was running throughout the show was just
- 1:29:11this the way. That the community's so.
- 1:29:16Yeah, yeah, it. Was so hierarchical, right?
- 1:29:20But that's why then, then that also gave like, one of the other
- 1:29:22scenes that I really loved when he was just, you know, he was
- 1:29:26when they were together and people were asking them like,
- 1:29:30you know, is this rumor real? And he's like, yeah, she's my
- 1:29:32girlfriend. Like I'm we're dating.
- 1:29:34And then they sit next to each other in the canteen, and then
- 1:29:37they just basically do, because they just do a lot of this, like
- 1:29:40shy smiling at each. Like they can't, Yeah, stop
- 1:29:42smiling at each other. But then they kind of stop, and
- 1:29:45then they start again because they kind of like, can't not
- 1:29:47stop smiling. And I was just like, ohh,
- 1:29:49they're so adorable. They're so cute together.
- 1:29:52I love them. Yeah.
- 1:29:53Yeah, the exploitation. Of the students by the
- 1:29:57professors, yes. Disgusting.
- 1:30:03And they badger them. They insult them.
- 1:30:06The teachers are condescending to them.
- 1:30:09They pin all of like the professors pin all of their own.
- 1:30:14Dash Dreams. And musical aspirations on the
- 1:30:17students. And not only do they live
- 1:30:18vicariously through them, but they they're simultaneously
- 1:30:21gaining esteem and clout and position from attaching their
- 1:30:26name to their most successful students.
- 1:30:28And this blew my mind, I don't feel.
- 1:30:32Like, we have that in our culture over here in the West.
- 1:30:35So I was like, this is like a whole new thing where you have
- 1:30:41these students who make it and then somehow like the teachers
- 1:30:46also in the same sentence. Why?
- 1:30:48Yeah. That's really interesting.
- 1:30:50Because you know how you said like this drama kind of felt
- 1:30:53like a bit old school to you, So this part of it?
- 1:30:56Felt very old school to me because I think that's quite,
- 1:30:59it's quite an Asian confusion concept, you know, the whole
- 1:31:02like confusion thing of a master and their like their their pupil
- 1:31:07and how a successful pupil reflects well on their master.
- 1:31:11So for me, it felt like these were kind of themes that had
- 1:31:14been so the fact that they these two quite bitchy professors and
- 1:31:18they're like at each other, like the whole the two women
- 1:31:20professors, yeah. It felt really.
- 1:31:23Old school to me, so actually I. Ended up kind of enjoying it
- 1:31:26because I found that bit like a little bit melodramatic, like
- 1:31:30melodra, like old school melodrama.
- 1:31:32Like they were just, it was like it was just so OTT and they were
- 1:31:35just so bitchy and they just hated each other so much that I
- 1:31:39was like, OK, I'm just this bit's not like this is just the
- 1:31:43mellow butt of this drama. Like they're kind of like taking
- 1:31:45the P rather than it being like a true reflection of kind of
- 1:31:49might might go on in the classical world.
- 1:31:51So that's right. Yeah.
- 1:31:52So it was. It was a.
- 1:31:53Little bit. Trying to watch and to have the
- 1:31:57students get in the crosshairs of these petty rivalries and the
- 1:32:00those two music professors who don't one actually did teach the
- 1:32:06students. It felt like yes, whenever.
- 1:32:09She was having the private. Lessons with that one girl who
- 1:32:12had a a really overbearing mom she was teaching her.
- 1:32:17On the other hand, whenever we saw the other professor with
- 1:32:21Chesuna on those private lessons, it was.
- 1:32:25I was like, how is Jason, like, keeping it together?
- 1:32:27Because she's not even paying attention.
- 1:32:29She's not giving her any notes, She's not teaching her anything.
- 1:32:33And. Then she had to do the.
- 1:32:34Event and then not get invited like she did all that work and
- 1:32:38then so angry I was. Livid.
- 1:32:43I was livid when that professor said.
- 1:32:47That that she was. Like, oh, I only invited the
- 1:32:50best students, the best players. And so of course you're not.
- 1:32:54A member of the Chamber Orchestra which the chamber.
- 1:32:58Itself was like a pyramid scheme.
- 1:33:01Yeah, yeah, yeah. It was a.
- 1:33:03Ponzi scheme, yeah, yeah, yes. The students, the players
- 1:33:07themselves, were buying all the tickets and.
- 1:33:11They were the like. There was no, Oh my God, it was
- 1:33:14so frustrating. But I I just couldn't get over
- 1:33:19that that bitch of a violin professor who?
- 1:33:23I mean. Even later.
- 1:33:25She's at some sort of event from the KYUNGSU Foundation that
- 1:33:29happens at the school and in front of all of the KYUNGSU
- 1:33:33Foundation girlies. The Bitch Violin Professor says
- 1:33:36you couldn't ask for a better wife for a performer.
- 1:33:39Nowadays women all have their own job keeping them busy.
- 1:33:42But honestly, for musicians like June Young who go on tour, they
- 1:33:46need a wife who packs their bags and manages their schedule.
- 1:33:51That's how they can focus on their music only, without having
- 1:33:54to worry about bothersome things like managing their money.
- 1:34:03It's a head scratcher. It's so.
- 1:34:05Old. School.
- 1:34:06That's what it is. That's the bit that remind, I
- 1:34:07think, yeah, that's the bit that felt like old school.
- 1:34:10Whoa. Whoa.
- 1:34:13And then I love how you had that Kyungsu nuna go.
- 1:34:16People really just say whatever they please, yeah.
- 1:34:20Like. People just flapped their.
- 1:34:21Lips together. And she goes.
- 1:34:24Not everybody. Is an adult just because they
- 1:34:26are older? Yes, I.
- 1:34:28Love her character. Oh, I loved her character.
- 1:34:31I thought she was such a gem. I really enjoyed her inclusion.
- 1:34:34Yeah, in the the whole show, really.
- 1:34:37I love. I love the.
- 1:34:38Actress. Actually, so yeah, I love her
- 1:34:41too. Yeah, that.
- 1:34:42Is I have her. Saw Jung Yong.
- 1:34:47Yes, so. She is also in interest of love.
- 1:34:51But she is. But she is playing the mum of
- 1:34:55Yuyun Suk and I think there's like a decade between them.
- 1:35:00I was just like, come on, now she's what?
- 1:35:03Now she's in. She's just like mum roles now.
- 1:35:06It's like she's not that old. Guys, come on.
- 1:35:09So yeah, that was a bit, yeah. Anyway, I digress.
- 1:35:13No, it's fine. It's fine.
- 1:35:16I think that the whole JYP doesn't, can't play piano the
- 1:35:21way he wants to and never has play piano the way he wants to
- 1:35:25is also really important part of the show.
- 1:35:27And really poignant because whenever he has these lessons
- 1:35:30with this terrible, terrible competition teacher who like, is
- 1:35:36mentally traumatizing all of his students evidently and
- 1:35:38especially JYP. Yeah.
- 1:35:41He's constantly telling him. To pander to the judges.
- 1:35:46And to basically dumb it down and play it in the most
- 1:35:49respectable, the most like appeal to the the common
- 1:35:54denominator basically versus playing it with the feeling and
- 1:35:58emotion and maybe slight difference from the pandering
- 1:36:04like the majority and getting a perfect score from like one
- 1:36:08person and making one person feel something.
- 1:36:13And I was like, that's powerful. Like we could sit there and talk
- 1:36:16about that for a long time, but I.
- 1:36:19Like that and he ends up. Saying can I not even play the
- 1:36:22piano the way I want to? And the teacher's like, no, you
- 1:36:25can't. It's.
- 1:36:27Really interesting because actually I think it's a parallel
- 1:36:30as well. So have you heard of Long Long?
- 1:36:32No. I don't.
- 1:36:35So. Lang Lang is a very famous
- 1:36:39pianist from China. So he's probably the most famous
- 1:36:41pianist that China has ever produced.
- 1:36:44And he started when he was three, obviously.
- 1:36:48So yeah. And he's and he's done
- 1:36:49interviews about how like he. He.
- 1:36:54Was basically like pressured into doing well.
- 1:36:57So anyway, I I digress. So one of the themes of and as a
- 1:37:02racist element to it as well, but one of the themes of.
- 1:37:05The Chinese classical music scene or even the East Asian
- 1:37:08musical scene is this kind of like and again slightly racist
- 1:37:12kind of viewpoint. The East Asian people are very
- 1:37:15technically good, but not necessarily have this kind of.
- 1:37:22Appreciation or this artistry or this authenticity of voice that
- 1:37:28maybe Western musicians have because they, you know, there's
- 1:37:32this kind of like because you know, like Chinese, there's a
- 1:37:34Chinese, like a racist Chinese trope is that we're all robotic
- 1:37:37automatons and that we're really good at that kind of following
- 1:37:40instructions and doing it. Like everybody could do the same
- 1:37:44move at the same time in a really orchestrated way.
- 1:37:46But we can't think for ourselves because we're kind of robotic
- 1:37:49like that and so. Pianists are like technically,
- 1:37:52so people who do then E stations that then do the classical music
- 1:37:56and learn an instrument are like technically very proficient but
- 1:37:59yet don't necessarily have this artistry thing.
- 1:38:03So I also thought that that was like his teacher was kind of
- 1:38:06representing like that world of like be.
- 1:38:10Somebody who is technically good and pleases everybody.
- 1:38:14And don't be too individual and express your personality and
- 1:38:20your you know your emotions through your piece and be too
- 1:38:23idiosyncratic, like because you should just fit in because like
- 1:38:27the Asian thing is to fit in and not stand out.
- 1:38:32I am shocked. Well, not shocked.
- 1:38:35How do I put this? I have never heard that about.
- 1:38:39Musicians and artists from Southeast Asia ever.
- 1:38:43And so that was shocking in and of itself.
- 1:38:45But I am so glad that you're here to have these great nuanced
- 1:38:49takes and and call out some of these maybe stereotypes if
- 1:38:54you're looking at the got it nicely.
- 1:38:55But I. Literally, you blew my.
- 1:38:59Mind right now about that take in that viewpoint about the
- 1:39:04racist stereotype and like. I never thought of it like that.
- 1:39:10I never thought and. It's just, you know, I come from
- 1:39:12a different culture and like, individuality is everything.
- 1:39:17And that's why you've. You know, gravitate towards
- 1:39:19certain performers because they make you feel a certain way or
- 1:39:23they talk about something that in their lyrics that like speaks
- 1:39:26to you. And classical music is really
- 1:39:29difficult to make a name for yourself to me, because the
- 1:39:33music has been on the page for sometimes centuries.
- 1:39:37And countless people have played it.
- 1:39:46Yeah. And what are you gonna bring to
- 1:39:41the table that's new and fresh and different?
- 1:39:44Yeah, no, I totally. Wow.
- 1:39:48Yeah, it was interesting. I I felt like that's why I
- 1:39:51actually appreciate another element of why I appreciated the
- 1:39:54drama that it was set in, the setting that was kind of had a
- 1:39:57wider social. Commentary I think like on,
- 1:40:00yeah, like I said that it's very much kind of.
- 1:40:04Something that lots and lots of people do in Asia just for the
- 1:40:07extracurricular credits and not necessarily in and of itself.
- 1:40:13Romance of it, yeah. Yeah, right.
- 1:40:12Not for. Or the love.
- 1:40:15Of it or the creativity, the artistry of it, Yeah, yeah.
- 1:40:19Yeah. I really.
- 1:40:23I guess the last thing that I wanted to talk about about gyp
- 1:40:27was that he was so. Wrecked, like with his soulless
- 1:40:32life. That he's lived as a pianist and
- 1:40:34as a student, and that he's the golden ticket for his family.
- 1:40:39The checking account that they dip into when his dad squanders
- 1:40:42more money and he feels indebted and owned by the rich family, by
- 1:40:48Jung Kung's family, who gave him everything.
- 1:40:51They gave him his shot, gave him the foundation money and they
- 1:40:55continually pay his family's debts under the table.
- 1:40:59And it's like he can't live without them.
- 1:41:03Like he can't amount. To anything without their
- 1:41:05wallet. And it's maddening for him to
- 1:41:08keep this toxic lifestyle that he's and it goes into.
- 1:41:12Like what we were saying earlier about he's never been able to
- 1:41:15enjoy his piano playing. Well, this is a huge part of it
- 1:41:18too, that he's been beaten into submission and he's been bought
- 1:41:23and paid for, basically. Yeah.
- 1:41:26Yeah, so the romance. Fan in me also loves that hits
- 1:41:30his setup because he's so lonely, right?
- 1:41:32I love a lonely hero. A lonely, damaged hero.
- 1:41:39And yeah, and I I love that. I love how they they set it up
- 1:41:42in the drama. Like it's not in your face that
- 1:41:45this is the thing that he's going through that you just kind
- 1:41:48of like peel back the layers and realize that he, you know with
- 1:41:52with the whole, like I'm this top tier concept, P&S comes all
- 1:41:56of this top kind of thing. And and I thought that the drama
- 1:41:59did a really good and then like Kim and Jay himself did a really
- 1:42:02good. He was.
- 1:42:04So it was a really physical performance actually because
- 1:42:07they're so introverted and they don't say a lot.
- 1:42:10So I felt like they were really showing their acting chops
- 1:42:14through really subtle like the way he held his body, the eye
- 1:42:19contact and stuff and like, yeah, just really great.
- 1:42:23I agree. I agree when they break.
- 1:42:27Up which I was fully supportive of Jason while breaking up with
- 1:42:31him. Actually, as a matter.
- 1:42:32Of fact, I was like, yeah, this should happen earlier.
- 1:42:36It's of course raining outside. And that's what I mean by in the
- 1:42:39later episodes it gets a little cheap with like the K drama
- 1:42:43tropes and the cliches where earlier they had this whole
- 1:42:47scene where she gave him an umbrella.
- 1:42:48It was raining, he didn't have one.
- 1:42:49She gave him one. Then they break up.
- 1:42:52Of fucking course it's raining outside.
- 1:42:54When she walks out and he gives her back the umbrella.
- 1:42:57Yeah, yeah. So I was like I hated it cuz
- 1:43:00they didn't need. It right I.
- 1:43:02Didn't need to do that. Well, actually, cuz yeah.
- 1:43:04And just the other really, really, really great scene that
- 1:43:08I really loved was his initial confession to her.
- 1:43:13So, so let me set this up. So she he had said, I need to
- 1:43:17have a conversation with you and I need to tell you something.
- 1:43:22So she then all starts thinking, Oh my God, what could he be
- 1:43:25telling me? Like, could he be telling me,
- 1:43:27could he be confessing his love back to me or whatever?
- 1:43:30And then she's all like, really tense and nervous.
- 1:43:32And then suddenly he goes, so I'm playing the piano for
- 1:43:37talking, and she's just like. What the like WCF like?
- 1:43:44Why you tell like why are you telling me this?
- 1:43:46Why is this relevant to me? Like you just kind of told me
- 1:43:49that you were telling me something so I thought you were
- 1:43:51here to tell me something big like just basically you know,
- 1:43:55she more thing like one more thing that Jung Kung has like
- 1:43:58Won over her. Yes, is.
- 1:44:00That now suddenly he's her accompanist accompanist.
- 1:44:04And she's struggling. Like has been struggling to get
- 1:44:09a good accompanies for her grad school audition.
- 1:44:12And it's like like right where it hurts, right, Yeah, right
- 1:44:15where it hurts. And then he said that this is
- 1:44:17the really important thing he wants to tell her.
- 1:44:19And also we as in the audience know that he wants to do it like
- 1:44:22cuz he doesn't want her to misunderstand and stuff.
- 1:44:25But my heart's with her. I'm just like seriously, like
- 1:44:30seriously, this is the way. Read the room.
- 1:44:31Read the room. Yeah, and then and.
- 1:44:36Then he drops the bombshell. Of like, actually I like you.
- 1:44:40And then they have their kiss with the piano and the
- 1:44:43discordant notes, and now it's like, I love the thing, I love
- 1:44:47the scene. Yeah, that's a really good A+
- 1:44:51scene and I. That then they come up with that
- 1:44:54thing. Between them, that's like, tell
- 1:44:55me the important thing first. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:45:00I really like that too. I.
- 1:45:01Really love that too. Yeah, so.
- 1:45:05This was OK for me in the episode. 15 they both get.
- 1:45:09And this is done in like a montage sequence, so it's not
- 1:45:12dwelled upon that much. But she gets sick because she's
- 1:45:16decided to give up the violin because that's her great love,
- 1:45:20right? She's loves playing the violin
- 1:45:23and then he gets sick at the same time because they broke up.
- 1:45:27Because she was his greatest love, not the piano.
- 1:45:30Like, who gives a fuck about the piano?
- 1:45:31So I I was like, OK, this is OK. I'll allow this trope of like,
- 1:45:38oh, they get sick because they're heartsick, basically,
- 1:45:41Yes. Yeah.
- 1:45:45Yeah. Did you foresee?
- 1:45:47That Jung Kyung's grandmother would die.
- 1:45:53I was quite shocked actually, I think when it.
- 1:45:55Happened. But then I realized, I guess
- 1:45:58they were telling us that she was not.
- 1:46:00She wasn't. She was ill.
- 1:46:01She was ill. She was OK.
- 1:46:04So here's I I agree. With you and.
- 1:46:06I I'm. The fact that they were saying,
- 1:46:10oh, she had a hospital. Say she was ill and.
- 1:46:12People were kind of like treating her very gingerly
- 1:46:14whenever she was out and about. That's fine.
- 1:46:17But she seemed in good health the rest of the show, and so I
- 1:46:22thought we were free and clear of some elderly person just up
- 1:46:24and dying on us in the middle of the show.
- 1:46:27Not the case at all. You get a really cheap shot,
- 1:46:31right? Where Jung Kyung just sent the
- 1:46:33e-mail was about to send the e-mail that she's going to turn
- 1:46:35down the professorial position and her violin string snaps to
- 1:46:44signify. Smash, cut the grandma.
- 1:46:48We're already like, she's already dead and we're at the
- 1:46:51funeral. I was like, what the fuck?
- 1:46:54Like this is so. It couldn't.
- 1:46:58Have been more old School K drama in that moment.
- 1:47:03Yeah, I so agree. I so agree.
- 1:47:05Yeah, he's like, again, we were just talking about all this
- 1:47:08nuance and meaning throughout the show.
- 1:47:10And their journeys are so interesting.
- 1:47:12And then you have like the violin snap to civilize that the
- 1:47:15grandmother died. I'm like, shut up.
- 1:47:17Like, just shut up, tone it down.
- 1:47:19Because we were good up until now.
- 1:47:22I felt a bit like it was almost like the showrunner, like, came
- 1:47:25in. Maybe at that point I said, you
- 1:47:26know, like, I think you need to put these things into your
- 1:47:29drama. Like, it's just liberty.
- 1:47:30Subtle. It's too too smart.
- 1:47:34You have to dumb it down to the. Audience.
- 1:47:36Yeah, exactly. So annoying, but they finally
- 1:47:40get together. And play Brahms for her
- 1:47:44graduation. Recital, yeah.
- 1:47:47Which I really enjoyed their performance I thought.
- 1:47:49The latter. Performances between them and
- 1:47:53the trio, yeah. And his graduation recital as
- 1:47:57well. I was like, these are really
- 1:47:59good. Memorable bits of the show of
- 1:48:02them performing and they sounded really good.
- 1:48:05I did And I think where like Pak on bins kind of like violin
- 1:48:10playing and slight background and it really paid off because
- 1:48:13when she's doing the Super dramatic like you know, Boeing
- 1:48:16thing, I'm just like you look so right.
- 1:48:19You know, I do not pay the violin, so I have no idea, but
- 1:48:22you look like you look the real deal.
- 1:48:25And yeah, it was so great. It was really good.
- 1:48:28Yeah, I like the quote that she says to him after their
- 1:48:31performance at. Her graduation recital.
- 1:48:33You know, the piece we played today?
- 1:48:35The FAE Sonata means free but lonely.
- 1:48:38But I hope that you can be free and happy.
- 1:48:41Yeah, yeah, that's so lovely. It's so lovely.
- 1:48:47I don't understand this is a nipic.
- 1:48:48Why did? His graduation recital have like
- 1:48:50a bunch of songs, and then hers just had one song that's so big.
- 1:48:57Like he came in and had a whole program.
- 1:49:00And she just needed. Him for the one son.
- 1:49:02Yeah. Yeah, maybe that's just his, You
- 1:49:05know, he's the star. And she's like, yeah, true that
- 1:49:09little. But I like the.
- 1:49:11Conversation. That she has.
- 1:49:12With him after his graduation. Recital where he says, I mean he
- 1:49:18like they've already broken up, she's about to leave and he says
- 1:49:24like, I love you. Like I'm I'm being selfish right
- 1:49:28now. I know that.
- 1:49:29Like we've. Broken up and.
- 1:49:31I hurt you. This is so great.
- 1:49:31But I love you. And I think I just regret it for
- 1:49:33the rest of my life. If I didn't tell you right now
- 1:49:36and I was like, like, hand over heart, I like, couldn't breathe.
- 1:49:39I was like, Oh my God. Then she says that she can't be
- 1:49:44friends with him. Yeah, because she loves him.
- 1:49:47And then they have this most scrumptious kiss backstage.
- 1:49:52I was like, oh Lord, like this is.
- 1:49:56It was pretty good, yeah. Yeah, the last couple of notes
- 1:50:02that I have have to do. His mom.
- 1:50:05Throughout the show, I was thinking she should just divorce
- 1:50:08this asshole. There's no hopes that I know.
- 1:50:11I know Ben JYP has this convo with his mom.
- 1:50:16And says mom. Get a divorce.
- 1:50:18I literally gasped. So like the gasp that I gust
- 1:50:23when he goes, he just starts in. Mom, get a divorce.
- 1:50:26I was like, that's what I have been saying the whole.
- 1:50:31So direct. Love it?
- 1:50:33Yeah, yeah, he caught me off guard and.
- 1:50:36Then couple rings happy ever after.
- 1:50:41And and that's it like I think maybe the.
- 1:50:43Show the only. Other nippic I have is maybe the
- 1:50:47show should be 12 episodes long versus 16.
- 1:50:50I think that would be a really sweet spot so you didn't have to
- 1:50:53do the 1.25 speed so that I didn't have to.
- 1:50:56Do the 1.25 speed and we wouldn't have two love
- 1:50:58triangles. And we wouldn't have a little
- 1:51:01bit of wheel spinning with John Kyung and her bullshit.
- 1:51:06And yeah, it just would have been a little bit of a tighter
- 1:51:08show. And I again, really good show
- 1:51:13overall, really enjoyed it. I I I No.
- 1:51:17I liked it at 16. I would have taken 14 but I
- 1:51:20think like 12 was maybe a bit too.
- 1:51:22I mean the what the one thing I would say that my final point
- 1:51:25would have been that I'm just very glad that they the secondly
- 1:51:28didn't end up together. Oh my God that's a great point.
- 1:51:34I'm so. Glad they didn't, cuz I was.
- 1:51:36I was, I was like, you know, because I really didn't like
- 1:51:38her. So episode 14 bit, I think I was
- 1:51:41like, please don't get back together with her, don't, don't,
- 1:51:44like, don't give her, don't redeem her so much that she is
- 1:51:48now like, OK to have her. Because I thought that's what
- 1:51:50they were gonna do with the direct like her grandmother
- 1:51:53dying. They were gonna like make it all
- 1:51:55like get it all like like shmushi and like she was gonna
- 1:52:00like realize that she'd been a bitch all this time.
- 1:52:03And I was like, please don't make that happen because I'm
- 1:52:06just not buying it. And then he goes off to the
- 1:52:09States and I'm like, yes, yes, so leave me.
- 1:52:15Find. Someone.
- 1:52:16Find someone who deserves you, yeah.
- 1:52:19Yeah, I agree. Oh, the last thing, I guess.
- 1:52:21John Kyung. Is Semi redeemed when she
- 1:52:25realizes that she never loved JYP.
- 1:52:28She just was comforted by him and his presence and his piano
- 1:52:34playing and was extremely jealous of his success.
- 1:52:37And felt inferior because her own talent had diminished.
- 1:52:41Yeah, but. But again, I didn't buy that
- 1:52:46either though. Because that doesn't like her
- 1:52:48self realization. Yeah.
- 1:52:51OK, Well, no. Had self realization if that's.
- 1:52:53Why she liked him like I just was a bit like, but then, but
- 1:52:57then you were basically acting like the the jealous kind of
- 1:53:01bitch, right? So I don't like.
- 1:53:04I get like that could be a justification for how you feel
- 1:53:07about someone, but that is not how you behave.
- 1:53:09For the majority of this drama, she just behaves so badly.
- 1:53:13She did. She just behaves so badly, I
- 1:53:15guess. What I liked is that she was
- 1:53:17actually a good teacher. Yes.
- 1:53:19Yeah. So I like that little like, you
- 1:53:22know the the girl was, she saw herself in the girl, right.
- 1:53:25And her, her tiger mum. And yeah, and having, I think
- 1:53:30also having her coming to terms with.
- 1:53:33What the foundation means to each member of her family and
- 1:53:37how the grandmother, like she called her grandma out for
- 1:53:43thinking that this foundation was this like charitable thing
- 1:53:46that she was doing out of the goodness of her heart when
- 1:53:48really she started this foundation because she felt
- 1:53:51extremely guilty toward her daughter who died Junkyung's
- 1:53:56mom. And not having a good
- 1:53:58relationship with her and being very harsh toward her.
- 1:54:02Yeah, in life. And I was like, oh, that's.
- 1:54:06Ooh. That's heavy.
- 1:54:10I felt like towards the end, like I could.
- 1:54:09Yeah, that's. Buy her like, I don't think she
- 1:54:13had a full redemption art, but I could.
- 1:54:14I felt like I could buy a little bit of, like, hope for her, that
- 1:54:20she could be less of a bitch in the future.
- 1:54:24Yeah, and she was already in her 30s, like.
- 1:54:27I feel like by the. By the time you're in your 30s,
- 1:54:30you're fully cooked like this. You don't grow that much, I
- 1:54:35guess. I don't know.
- 1:54:38Yeah. This is great and you had such
- 1:54:43great takes and so much insight. So we Wow, we were on the same
- 1:54:40wavelength for a lot of. Cultural relevancy and things
- 1:54:48that spoke to you that I just didn't even pick up on.
- 1:54:50I'm so glad that you came on this episode with me.
- 1:54:53And enjoyed the show. Sometimes people come on and we
- 1:54:56have a good time but the show sucked and we were just
- 1:54:58commiserating the whole time because we didn't like the show.
- 1:55:01But in this case we did like the show.
- 1:55:03And I do wanna just thank you for being so patient.
- 1:55:06It takes a really long time sometimes to produce podcast
- 1:55:09episodes, as you know, with afternoon to ask.
- 1:55:12But I really appreciate it. You've been really, really
- 1:55:15wonderful. And I hope you come back.
- 1:55:17Oh, I'd love to come back. Thank you so much for having me.
- 1:55:20I had a blast. Thank you.
- 1:55:21Oh great. Where can with people find you
- 1:55:23online? Sarah So I.
- 1:55:25Post probably a little bit too obsessively on Instagram at K
- 1:55:29Drama this. And then as you said, we've
- 1:55:32we've just started a brand new Baby pod Afternoon Asks, which
- 1:55:37is a sister podcast of Afternoon Delight.
- 1:55:40And I know you've had Leah from Afternoon Delight on your show.
- 1:55:43So we myself and then Grace, my cohost is a Korean American.
- 1:55:50So we're kind of like Asian owned voices on this whole K
- 1:55:53drama many together. So we and it's called asks
- 1:55:57because we have a lot of questions, right.
- 1:55:59So, you know like we watched K dramas and we're like does this
- 1:56:03thing really happen. So we're we're kind of how to
- 1:56:05ask the questions that we all have and bring on a lot of
- 1:56:09guests and grill them because we both neither us know everything.
- 1:56:13We learn how to say Korean names properly with Grace and we learn
- 1:56:16some phrases and and other things.
- 1:56:18So yeah. So come and join us on Afternoon
- 1:56:21asks. I am so glad that you guys are
- 1:56:25doing those episodes. And have.
- 1:56:27Started a really nice like spin off of Afternoona.
- 1:56:31I loved having Lee Leon and here's some more episodes with
- 1:56:36you guys, both the afternoona team coming on Debak.
- 1:56:40I really appreciate it and that's it.
- 1:56:42That's been our show. I'm Jessica and this has been
- 1:56:45the Tebaki Rambles podcast. We're turning good time seeing
- 1:57:16us from Hanaman or Hanaman. It's in the matter of sugar in
- 1:57:22our sky ground. Get some high.
