- 0:00Come follow me, First Samuel, First Kings speak Lord for thy
- 0:06servant heareth by Elder Gerrit W.
- 0:09Gong of the Quorum of the 12 Apostles.
- 0:14The importance of hearing and listening is illustrated in the
- 0:17story I have always loved told by President Marion G Romney,
- 0:21who served as a counselor in the First Presidency for several
- 0:24years. As President Romney and his dear
- 0:27wife Ida grew older, he was concerned she was losing her
- 0:31hearing and he mentioned it to a doctor.
- 0:34He asked me how bad it was and I said I didn't know.
- 0:38He told me to go home and find out.
- 0:40The doctor instructed me to go into a far room and speak to
- 0:42her, then I should move nearer and nearer until she does hear.
- 0:47Following the doctor's instructions, I spoke to her
- 0:49from the bedroom while she was in the kitchen.
- 0:51No answer. I moved nearer and spoke again.
- 0:54No answer. So I went right up to the door
- 0:57of the kitchen and said, Ida, can you hear me?
- 1:01She responded, what is it Marian?
- 1:04I've answered you 3 times as a specialist told a patient who
- 1:08came to have his hearing checked.
- 1:10Your hearing is fine, but you may have a listening problem.
- 1:14In a gospel sense, we each have a listening opportunity as we
- 1:18learn to hear and listen, heed and hearken and willingly obey
- 1:23the Lord. In First Samuel and 1st Kings,
- 1:27we learn about hearing, listening, and hearkening to the
- 1:30Lord's Word, voice, and will. In turn, the Lord hears and
- 1:35intently listens to us, whether our prayers are uttered or
- 1:38unexpressed. And in His infinite wisdom and
- 1:41compassion, He answers across the needs, hopes, and
- 1:45circumstances of our lives in His time and way.
- 1:50In these beloved Old Testament chapters, come see how we can
- 1:54hear and heed the word of the Lord, hear and hearken.
- 1:59As a young boy, Samuel, who became a great prophet, learned
- 2:03how to hear the Lord. When he hears a voice call him.
- 2:06Samuel thinks it is Eli the temple high priest.
- 2:09Three times Samuel responds, Here am I first Samuel 356 and
- 2:16eight. When Eli perceives it is the
- 2:19Lord calling the child, he says to Samuel, Go, lie down, and it
- 2:23shall be, if he call thee that thou shalt say, Speak, Lord, for
- 2:28thy servant heareth. With a child's faith and
- 2:31obedience Samuel went and lay down in his place.
- 2:35And the Lord came and stood, and called, as at other times,
- 2:39Samuel. Samuel.
- 2:41Then Samuel answered, Speak for thy servant heareth first Samuel
- 2:463, nine to 10. Notice the word stood seemingly
- 2:51Samuel was not hearing a distant disembodied voice, And Samuel
- 2:55grew, and the Lord was with him, and did let none of his words
- 2:59fall to the ground. First Samuel 319 Throughout his
- 3:04life Samuel hears the Lord, and so teaches Only fear the Lord,
- 3:09and serve him in truth with all your heart, for consider how
- 3:13great things he hath done for you.
- 3:15First Samuel 1224 Here the phrase fear the Lord seems to
- 3:20include the meaning. Pay heed and reverence to the
- 3:24Lord As our reading continues, we learn an important lesson
- 3:28from King Saul. Instructed by the Lord, Samuel
- 3:32tells Saul and his followers not to take a spoils the enemy's
- 3:36oxen, sheep, camel, and ass. First Samuel 15 three.
- 3:42Yet Saul and his followers rationalize keeping the best of
- 3:46the enemy livestock. They say they will sacrifice the
- 3:49sheep and oxen to the Lord. Samuel then asks, Hath the Lord
- 3:54is great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in
- 3:57obeying the voice of the Lord. Behold, to obey is better than
- 4:02sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of Rams.
- 4:06First Samuel 1522 The Lord does not ask us to choose between
- 4:11obedience and sacrifice. Rather, He wants us to recognize
- 4:15that to obey and hearken to His will is better than to make
- 4:18ritual offerings. Hearing and obeying the Lord
- 4:22allows him to bless us. It is always better than
- 4:25following our own rituals or sacrifices, or fearing the
- 4:28people and hearkening to their voice, such as Saul protested he
- 4:31was doing. See first Samuel 1524.
- 4:36Look on the heart. Hearing and hearkening to the
- 4:39Lord comes in another lesson from Samuel when he was to
- 4:43identify and anoint a new king for Israel as Jesse's sons come
- 4:47forward. 1 by 1. The Lord teaches Samuel look not
- 4:52on his countenance or on the height of his stature, for the
- 4:55Lord seeth not as man seeth, for man looketh on the outward
- 4:59appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart.
- 5:03First Samuel 16, seven. This is not to say we can
- 5:07neglect personal grooming or hygiene, but especially in our
- 5:11insta perfect world, we can focus less on outward curated
- 5:15names, images and likenesses. The Lord would have us here and
- 5:20hearken to the liberating truth that our most authentic,
- 5:24enduring identity is as a child of God, a child of the covenant,
- 5:29and a disciple of Christ. This truth is not only for how
- 5:33we see ourselves, but also for how the Lord invites us to see
- 5:37and treat each other. Shortly after young David was
- 5:40called and anointed, A Philistine warrior named Goliath
- 5:45challenged the armies of Israel. Goliath was a giant of a man who
- 5:49may have stood over 9 feet tall. You know the story.
- 5:54I hope you share the faith that underlies the story of David and
- 5:57Goliath with your children and grandchildren.
- 6:00David said to Goliath, Thou comest to me with a sword and
- 6:04with a spear and with a shield, but I come to thee in the name
- 6:08of the Lord of hosts. First Samuel 1745.
- 6:13David was courageous not only on the battlefield, but also in how
- 6:17he listened and heard the Lord's word.
- 6:19In his daily living as the commander of King Saul's armies,
- 6:24David behaved himself wisely in all his ways, and the Lord was
- 6:28with him. First Samuel 1814 seek wisdom
- 6:34and understanding. We continue to learn how to hear
- 6:38and hearken to the Lord. In the Book of First Kings,
- 6:41Solomon is given opportunity to ask what he will from the Lord.
- 6:45Of all the things he could choose, Solomon asks for wisdom.
- 6:49And God gave Solomon wisdom and understanding, exceeding much
- 6:52and largeness of heart, even as the sand that is on the
- 6:55seashore. First Kings 429.
- 6:59When we focus on what matters most, we can be instruments in
- 7:03the Lord's hand. The Lord can also then bless us
- 7:06and through US others in many additional ways.
- 7:10See First Kings 312 to 13. By seeking wisdom and
- 7:14understanding, Solomon was prepared by the Lord to build a
- 7:18temple. The Lord said concerning this
- 7:21house which thou art in building, if thou wilt walk in
- 7:24my statutes and execute my judgements, and keep all my
- 7:28commandments to walk in them, then will I perform my word with
- 7:31thee, and I will dwell among the children of Israel, and will not
- 7:36forsake my people. Israel First Kings 612 to 13.
- 7:41For us the House of the Lord is ultimately centered in our
- 7:45learning to hear and hearken in essence, to say, Speak Lord, for
- 7:50thy servant heareth assurance, comfort, guidance, instruction.
- 7:58In First Kings we also read that another great prophet comes to
- 8:01Israel, Elijah, at a time of famine and a drought of dew and
- 8:06rain. See First Kings 17 one and of
- 8:09hearing the word of the Lord in the land.
- 8:11Elijah is preserved, and a widow in Zarephath is blessed as both
- 8:16hearken to the Lord amid life's famines and droughts.
- 8:20The Lord's word brings promise of hope and deliverance.
- 8:24In Elijah's time the promise was for a sound of abundance of
- 8:28rain. First Kings 1841.
- 8:31This would be a good title for the blessings that come in the
- 8:34Lord's time and way. When we say, speak Lord, for thy
- 8:38servant heareth. I conclude with another lesson
- 8:41from Elijah. In a dark moment Elijah laments
- 8:46to the Lord, The children of Israel have forsaken my
- 8:49covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain my prophets
- 8:53with the sword, and I even I only am left, and they seek my
- 8:58life to take it away. And the Lord said, Go forth, and
- 9:04stand upon the mount before the Lord, and behold, the Lord
- 9:08passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains,
- 9:13and break in pieces the rocks before the Lord.
- 9:16But the Lord was not in the wind.
- 9:18And after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not
- 9:22in the earthquake. And after the earthquake a fire,
- 9:26but the Lord was not in the fire, And after the fire a still
- 9:30small voice. First Kings, 1910 to 12.
- 9:35That's often where we stop reading with the still, small
- 9:38voice. But while the voice was still
- 9:40and small, the Lord continued to give Elijah the assurance,
- 9:44comfort, guidance, and instruction he sought and
- 9:47needed. See First Kings 1913 to 16.
- 9:52This is the Lord's promise as we seek with genuine intent to
- 9:55listen and hearken. He can whisper by His Spirit to
- 9:59our heart and mind. He can speak through His voice
- 10:02and the voice of His prophets. He can prompt with fresh
- 10:05inspiration in the dreams of the night and in the day's first
- 10:07light. We are His children in infinite
- 10:11and eternal wisdom and compassion.
- 10:13God our Eternal Father and His beloved Son Jesus Christ, love
- 10:18and listen and hear and answer us always, especially when with
- 10:24faith, humility and real intent, we say, speak Lord, for thy
- 10:29servant heareth. This audio was created using
- 10:34artificial intelligence.
