Transcript
- 0:00Hi everyone, welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:04culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:07media, the creator economy and the digital space every Monday
- 0:11through Thursday and sometimes Fridays like today.
- 0:14I'm your host, Lauren Meisner, the founder of the youth digital
- 0:18media brand Centennial World. All right, no updates for you
- 0:22guys today again, so let's get into the stories.
- 0:25The first story that I have for you guys is that JoJo Siwa and
- 0:29Chris Hughes have seemingly debuted their relationship.
- 0:34I fear Kath Ebbs was right. I don't know if I thought that
- 0:39JoJo and Chris were like going to end up being together, but
- 0:43anyways, let me explain what's happening.
- 0:44So JoJo and her Celebrity Big Brother Co star Chris Hughes are
- 0:48currently on a vacation at an adults only resort in Mexico and
- 0:52they were photographed kissing in the pool and being very
- 0:56coupling. This paparazzi photo shoot came
- 0:58right after JoJo posted a birthday dump on her Instagram
- 1:01yesterday where Chris is in a bunch of the photos and in the
- 1:05middle of the carousel. I think this is the most like
- 1:08incriminating one. If we didn't have the photo of
- 1:10them kissing in the pool, I think this would have been the
- 1:13most like, oh, OK, they are in a relationship.
- 1:15There is a photo in the middle of her carousel and it's them
- 1:18sitting side by side and his hand is on her leg.
- 1:21And like, she's taking a picture down like that.
- 1:23And it's just like, so boyfriend, girlfriend vibes.
- 1:26So as we know, this is right after JoJo has had a very public
- 1:30breakup with Australian influencer Kath Ebbs.
- 1:34Kath exposed JoJo on TikTok a few weeks back, saying that she
- 1:37broke up with Kath at the Big Brother after party.
- 1:40Kath had flown to the UK to celebrate the end of Big Brother
- 1:44and, you know, thought that they were going to be celebrating
- 1:47with their partner. And then obviously, JoJo broke
- 1:49up with them at the party. And Kath said with Chris in the
- 1:53other room. So very much indicating that
- 1:54they believed their breakup had a lot to do with Chris.
- 1:57JoJo has denied that, of course, in different press rounds that
- 2:01she's done. But yeah, like the way that JoJo
- 2:03and Chris acted on Celebrity Big Brother was so intimate and
- 2:07like, so couply. And I know Kath said initially
- 2:10that they thought maybe it was just for the show, but I guess
- 2:12it was not. We'll see how long this lasts.
- 2:15JoJo is a relationship girly. Like, she is a back-to-back
- 2:20relationship girly. How many partners has she had
- 2:23since she turned 18? I swear to God, like 8 And like
- 2:26whatever, you know, I said this before, but like, she's young,
- 2:28she's having fun, she's exploring herself.
- 2:31I mean, there's also, of course, people being like, I thought she
- 2:33was a lesbian. Like, I don't know, those labels
- 2:35don't really mean anything. The majority of my friends
- 2:38identify as straight, but if they got divorced from their
- 2:41husbands, they would probably exclusively start dating girls,
- 2:43you know, like none of this really matters.
- 2:46I mean, I, I guess that they're like together, like they look
- 2:49like a couple. They do, they're a couple.
- 2:52I guess I feel really bad for Kath JoJo.
- 2:54Like you couldn't have get like Kath was heartbroken.
- 2:56You couldn't have just given Kath a couple of months to let
- 3:00this kind of cool off. Maybe JoJo feel slighted because
- 3:04Kath took it to TikTok and, you know, made it really public.
- 3:07But I don't know. I do think that was their right.
- 3:09Like they were in a very public relationship.
- 3:11And all of Jojo's exes have said that it's like JoJo is the one
- 3:15that likes to be very public in the relationship.
- 3:18Like she's the one that's like booking them, you know, front
- 3:20row seats on an NBA game courtside so that they can get
- 3:23photographed and stuff like that.
- 3:25Apparently, JoJo loves having her relationships in the
- 3:27spotlight like this. So I think it's fair that Kath
- 3:30brought their breakup to the spotlight.
- 3:33And I did see that Kath posted a podcast episode about their
- 3:37experience with the breakup. I think it was last week.
- 3:40I haven't listened to it, but I did see it on my Spotify
- 3:42homepage. So if you guys are interested in
- 3:45that tea, I would say go check it out.
- 3:48OK, the next story that I have for you guys, this is just a
- 3:50quick one, but I think it's it's relevant.
- 3:53Alex Earle is going to be joining Dancing with the Stars.
- 3:56Dancing with the Stars is going really hard on the influencer
- 3:59bid because Alex Earle has been announced as an upcoming
- 4:02contestant. This is the second really big
- 4:05name on TikTok, like Itch girl on TikTok that Dancing with the
- 4:08Stars has been able to land. First it was obviously Charlie
- 4:11d'emilio. Now, Alex, I just find it so
- 4:14interesting that Dancing with the Stars has become actually
- 4:18like a stamp of approval from Hollywood.
- 4:21Because correct me if I'm wrong, but when it started, it was kind
- 4:24of like we're really washed up celebrities who were like maybe
- 4:27trying to make a half assed comeback, like went or it was
- 4:31like reality stars who were trying to break out.
- 4:33Well, it is a reality show, but you know what I mean, Like
- 4:36trying to break out of like how we knew them.
- 4:38So like Kim Kardashian, like Lisa Vanderpump, some of the
- 4:40kind of bigger reality stars from those franchises, like
- 4:43lifestyle franchises. Yeah.
- 4:45I think it's really interesting. Alex.
- 4:46Earl's a huge get, honestly, a bigger get than Charlie for
- 4:49sure. Like, Charlie does not have as
- 4:51much cultural relevance by far as Alex Earl does.
- 4:55And I think this is actually going to bring in like,
- 4:57genuinely so many young women viewers.
- 5:01I will be really interested to see the ratings on this and if
- 5:05we can see any, like, demographic split because I
- 5:07think this is like a huge opportunity for Dancing with the
- 5:09Stars to actually tap that, like young female audience.
- 5:14OK, the last story that I have for you guys, this is a crazy
- 5:16one. A Canadian creator named Naya
- 5:19Sakir has taken to TikTok to share that Domino's Pizza quote
- 5:23took $7200 from her. OK, so this poor girl, Naya, she
- 5:31went on TikTok. So she had posted before, like
- 5:33she was posting, you know, just like personal content.
- 5:37And then she said that everybody in her life was like, take this
- 5:39to TikTok and honestly good advice because it has absolutely
- 5:43blown up. And I really think she might be
- 5:44able to get some justice here because of it.
- 5:46So she says she ordered Domino's Pizza from their website on
- 5:49March 30th. She's in Toronto, I believe
- 5:52that's what her bio says. And the order was $72.53.
- 5:57She paid online and she has a receipt that says that is what
- 6:00she paid. She says the next two days she
- 6:02got missed calls from Domino's and she thought it was just like
- 6:05customer service feedback calls. So she didn't answer them
- 6:07because it was the weekend and she was out with friends, like
- 6:09busy and stuff like that. And then later in the weekend,
- 6:12she checked her e-mail and she saw that she had an e-mail
- 6:15saying she was over her credit limit.
- 6:17And she thought that was weird because she had recently paid
- 6:20off her credit card. So she checks her credit card
- 6:22and she notices that Domino's took $7253 from her instead of
- 6:287253. That's obviously wild, but, you
- 6:31know, could be a mistake, like an honest mistake from the
- 6:33worker, a decimal issue, right? And I'm sure that's what it was.
- 6:38But the way that Scotia Bank and Domino's have reacted to this
- 6:42and treated her is what actually makes this so appalling.
- 6:47So she obviously first went to the Domino's store and was like
- 6:50calling them, trying to talk to the manager.
- 6:51She's like, they literally couldn't care less.
- 6:53Took it to Domino's head office. She said again, headquarters and
- 6:56her emails and everything, like couldn't care less.
- 6:59Nobody was helpful. Basically Domino's both at the
- 7:02store and headquarters were trying to turn it back on her.
- 7:04And she was like, there's nowhere online that I can input
- 7:08the total amount that I'm going to end up paying.
- 7:10So like, I could not have inputted like $7000.
- 7:15So then of course, now she's been trying to deal with
- 7:17Scotiabank. So she's been contacting
- 7:19Scotiabank, she's submitted, submitted multiple emails with
- 7:22all of her proof, all of her receipts.
- 7:24She's called so many different teams.
- 7:26She said she's talked to the customer service team, the fraud
- 7:30team, the social media team, the credit team, like everyone and
- 7:34no one is helpful. She said that their disputes can
- 7:38take between 30 to 90 days. And so after 30 days, because
- 7:42this happened on March 30th, she called Domino's and started this
- 7:45process on April 1st. When it hit 30 days, she called
- 7:49Scotia for an update and they were like, oh, you haven't
- 7:51submitted XYZ. So we haven't even like opened
- 7:54it. And she was like, well, how was
- 7:55I supposed to know that I needed to submit all this stuff?
- 7:57So then she submits the stuff. She called back again recently,
- 8:01which is why she ended up taking it to TikTok because, again,
- 8:04it's been 50 days now, and it has not even been opened.
- 8:07And the problem with a credit card, as I'm sure you guys know,
- 8:10is that, like, there's a timer on it.
- 8:12You know, there's a time limit for how long you can keep that
- 8:15balance there. So without paying it off.
- 8:18So she ended up paying off the $7000, like the full amount
- 8:22because she was like, this is going to affect my credit score.
- 8:25And for Australian listeners, I'm sure you guys understand
- 8:28credit and how it, it differs in North America versus Australia.
- 8:30But like, credit scores are so, so, so important in North
- 8:34America. Yeah.
- 8:35She was like, I was obviously in a very bad situation situation.
- 8:38And she's like, thankfully this happened to me and not somebody
- 8:41that, you know, would not be able to pay that off.
- 8:43Like $7000 is such a huge amount of money.
- 8:47There's only one person at Scotiabank now, thank God, which
- 8:50I only found last week, who's kind of trying to help me.
- 8:54But he called me on Friday and told me that I'm calling you
- 8:56because I promised I would and I promised I'd give you an update.
- 8:59The update is that there is no update.
- 9:01So basically, nobody is working on it.
- 9:04Nobody is helping me. All that I keep thinking is
- 9:06like, what would happen if this happened to somebody who could
- 9:09not pay off the $7000? Like, how is this OK?
- 9:12How is this legal? Like it causes so much stress.
- 9:15This is somebody's livelihood. Like $7000 is not a joke.
- 9:18Oh, and the kicker here is that the store Domino's, where she
- 9:22actually like ordered it from, told her that after this dispute
- 9:26is resolved, everything is said and done that they will be
- 9:29coming to collect the 7253 from her.
- 9:33But I wanted to talk about the situation it like it is going
- 9:36relatively viral, but I wanted to talk about it more in
- 9:39relation to how I think the online reception to this story
- 9:44is indicative of larger cultural change that we're seeing in
- 9:48online spaces. If this video was posted like
- 9:51even a year ago, I'd argue that we would see a much more divided
- 9:55comment section and plenty of stitches of people blaming her
- 9:59for like, not picking up the phone when Domino's called, for
- 10:01not checking her credit balance, for not double checking what she
- 10:04ended up paying for, people calling her a liar for clout,
- 10:08you know, and overwhelmingly, every piece of content, every
- 10:12comment that I've seen, everything related to this story
- 10:15that I have seen online has been on her side.
- 10:18So many people are commenting, offering her free legal advice.
- 10:22People are telling her like, step by step what she needs to
- 10:24do. Scotia Bank employees are
- 10:27commenting, saying message me, like I'll get on this right away
- 10:30for you. I saw CTV commented saying that
- 10:33they've reached out to her. So like they're obviously going
- 10:35to do some type of like news segment about this.
- 10:38So it's like it's really such a nice result to see.
- 10:41Like it's, it's a nice result out of a, a shitty situation.
- 10:45And the reason why I think this is indicative of a shift is
- 10:48because online reaction turned so dark amid Kovid.
- 10:53Like Kovid really was like the turning point for us.
- 10:56And we're still very much seeing the repercussions of that.
- 10:59And I think a huge reason why the online space became so
- 11:02tumultuous and divided partly, honestly, TikTok.
- 11:05I think TikTok democratized so many elements of viral fame and
- 11:09viral culture and being able to share your opinions and your
- 11:14commentary. And that existed before.
- 11:16But TikTok amplified that, right?
- 11:20Like, all of a sudden, regular people could share an opinion
- 11:22and people can't latch onto it. They can stitch it, they can do
- 11:25at it. They can reply in comments.
- 11:27And that video can just get millions of views.
- 11:30Like, of course, there was, you know, Twitter, for example,
- 11:32where people could, you know, share their opinions on
- 11:36political news or something. But the chances of that being
- 11:39amplified to millions of views users was very low if you were a
- 11:43nobody. Whereas TikTok completely
- 11:45changed the game and changed all the rules for social media and
- 11:49influence and all of that. So that was a huge part of that.
- 11:52The other is that I think during COVID and then onwards from
- 11:56COVID because of everything that's happened since, and I
- 12:00know we're not out of Covic, but I just mean like 2020 vibes is
- 12:03that feeling of intense helplessness and people were
- 12:08just looking for a place to project their anger and to feel
- 12:12some semblance of control. So getting mad at strangers in
- 12:16comment sections, it like validated the kind of confusion
- 12:21and anger and out of control feelings that we had.
- 12:23So yes, we really have watched people abuse each other over the
- 12:27last several years online over some of the pettiest stuff
- 12:31sometimes. And like, these interactions
- 12:34have always existed, but for the most part, they were really
- 12:37reserved for trolls. And then that behavior became a
- 12:40lot more widespread and a lot more normalized because of
- 12:44COVID, because of Trump, because of all of the things that we've
- 12:47been through in the last several years, and again, because of
- 12:51TikTok. But I genuinely have seen such a
- 12:54shift lately, and it's giving me a little bit of hope.
- 12:58I always said that the pendulum was so far one way, like it
- 13:01really did have to swing back at some point.
- 13:03And I think we are starting to see the beginnings of it.
- 13:06I think the average person is starting to give each other the
- 13:12benefit of the doubt online again.
- 13:14We'll see. I'm going to eat my words.
- 13:16OK, guys. Well, that's it for mini Scroll
