- 0:02Good evening.
- 0:03Good to see everyone out this evening.
- 0:04We will be continuing our study of worship in the Old and New Testament.
- 0:11As we consider additional principles concerning worship and some
- 0:17of the history behind worship,
- 0:19we've noticed a a few of the beginning examples of that.
- 0:23We're going to notice a few more this evening.
- 0:26But let's begin with a word of prayer and then we'll get into our study.
- 0:30Our gracious Father in heaven,
- 0:33we
- 0:33Come before your throne, grateful for the day that you've blessed us with,
- 0:37for the life that you have granted to us,
- 0:39for the health and the opportunity that we have to assemble together.
- 0:43We pray that you will continue to grant us that health and continue to grant
- 0:48us that opportunity. Lord, we pray for those who,
- 0:51by reason of illness or injury,
- 0:54are unable to be with us. We pray also for those who have lost loved ones.
- 1:00Especially mindful of Beverly and her family at this time,
- 1:03pray that you give them strength as they grieve.
- 1:06Lord, we pray that you will help us to always be an encouragement to those
- 1:11who are struggling in whatever way they may be struggling.
- 1:16And help us to be mindful of our position in life and
- 1:21be grateful and thankful for all that you do for us.
- 1:24Lord, we pray and ask that you forgive us of our sins when we fall short
- 1:28of your glory.
- 1:29And all this we pray and ask in Jesus' name.
- 1:31Amen.
- 1:36We're going to begin this evening in Genesis chapter four.
- 1:54So in Genesis chapter 4, ~ we of course have noticed the incident
- 2:00of Cain and Abel earlier on in the chapter.
- 2:03We're not gonna spend ~ any additional time on that,
- 2:06but we do notice there in that example that we have worship occurring.
- 2:11When we get to the end of the chapter,
- 2:14we find verse 25 and 26:
- 2:18Adam knew his wife again, and she bore a son and named him Seth.
- 2:23For God had appointed another seed for me instead of Abel,
- 2:27whom Cain killed. And as for Seth,
- 2:30to him also a son was born, and he named him Enosh,
- 2:36then men, and notice this terminology,
- 2:39began to call on the name of the Lord.
- 2:43This evening as we go through our study,
- 2:47we're going to notice examples of altars that were set up.
- 2:52And the sacrifices that were offered on them,
- 2:56and the connection that exists between worship
- 3:01and calling on the name of the Lord.
- 3:05Because that terminology is used a number of times throughout Scripture.
- 3:10Now, as Moses here records the events,
- 3:14he will utilize the reference.
- 3:18That is the term Lord in most English versions you'll find there at the
- 3:22end of verse 26 is the term for Yahweh.
- 3:26It it is the ~ in most English versions,
- 3:30it's either all caps or it's l uppercase and low or sorry,
- 3:34large and lowercase. I'm gonna get it right.
- 3:37Large and small caps ~ is the way many translations actually place it in there.
- 3:44~ but that is there to
- 3:47To differentiate if you see Lord in all caps,
- 3:51it's to differentiate the fact that they're the passages using the term Jehovah
- 3:57or Yahweh in the Hebrew, and ~ gives some special recognition to that.
- 4:04We we recognize that God will tell ~ Moses
- 4:10if you go forward into the book of Exodus that he would be
- 4:14Known by that name from that point forward,
- 4:18that that would be a recognition of God's place
- 4:22and relationship to Israel. But here in this text,
- 4:28we notice that humanity begins to call upon the name
- 4:35of the Lord. Humanity at large begins to worship God.
- 4:41Now,
- 4:42It's not going to be but a chapter before we see the descendants of Cain
- 4:48and their complete departure away from God,
- 4:52and their departure away from what God had told them to do,
- 4:56and humanity's departure away from what God had told them to do.
- 5:02but as a result of that,
- 5:05when we get to the end of chapter five,
- 5:07we're introduced to Noah.
- 5:09And Noah at five hundred years old is one who finds grace in the eyes of the Lord,
- 5:14but the contrast to Noah is the entire rest of the planet.
- 5:19Because you have in chapter five the declaration that those sons
- 5:24of God intermarried with the daughters of men.
- 5:28that was actually a discussion Kevin and I were having relatively recently about
- 5:33what what does that mean?
- 5:35Some will come to that passage and they'll argue,
- 5:38well, this is ~ I think ~ I'm not sure what religious group it is that that holds
- 5:43to this, but a number of people do,
- 5:45~ that this is a a time where angels intermarried with humans.
- 5:50That's not what the text is talking about.
- 5:53What you have in that text because of the direct reference previously to the men.
- 6:01Began to call on the name of the Lord,
- 6:03is you have those of Seth's descendants that are worshiping God,
- 6:09that are faithful to God, and they're going to be referred to as the sons of God.
- 6:15They're going to be referred to as those who are following after the Lord.
- 6:20They're calling on the name of the Lord.
- 6:22And yet Cain's descendants, which you read about in chapter 5,
- 6:27are going to be those who are going to be following after Cain.
- 6:30That which is evil, they're going to persist in that which is evil,
- 6:34just the same way that Cain did.
- 6:35Actually, you read about Cain's descendants in chapter four,
- 6:38verses 16 through 24. But there's a separation.
- 6:41Here's Seth's descendants, and they're following after God.
- 6:45Here's Cain's descendants, and they're following after their own sinful desires
- 6:50and their own sinful lusts. And what happens?
- 6:52The same way it happens in the days of Israel.
- 6:54Well, the sons of
- 6:57These people marry the daughter of these people,
- 7:00and guess what? It doesn't turn out well for.
- 7:02It doesn't turn out well for faithfulness to God.
- 7:05And so eventually, through the course of marrying into one another,
- 7:10the same way God will later tell Israel:
- 7:12don't intermarry with the Canaanites,
- 7:14don't intermarry with those Parizzites and the Hivites and the Jebusites
- 7:18and the ones that I told you you're going to put out of this land.
- 7:21Don't intermarry with with the people who are in that land,
- 7:24because if you do, they're going to turn your heart away from me,
- 7:27and I'm going to come and judge you.
- 7:29And sure enough, what do you find to be the circumstance that leads to the flood?
- 7:34Intermarrying between those who are faithful and those who are ungodly.
- 7:38And so their hearts are turned away from God,
- 7:42their hearts are turned away from the Lord,
- 7:44while they began to call upon the name of the Lord.
- 7:47By the time you get to the end of chapter 5,
- 7:50Noah.
- 7:51Stands as a unique example of those who find grace in the eyes of the Lord.
- 7:58So, as we look at worship,
- 8:04we consider that first God expects it.
- 8:08Secondly, God has expected it generation after generation after generation from
- 8:14garden forward. But let's notice what we find in the life of Noah.
- 8:21Genesis chapter five, we're introduced,
- 8:24as I mentioned, to Noah, and God is going to declare that Noah finds
- 8:30grace in his eyes. You find ~ Genesis chapter six,
- 8:34verse one, now it came to pass when man began to multiply on the face of the earth,
- 8:38the daughters were born to them,
- 8:40that the sons of God saw the daughters of men,
- 8:42that they were beautiful, that they took wives for themselves of all they chose,
- 8:47and the Lord said, My spirit shall not strive with man forever.
- 8:51For he indeed is is indeed flesh,
- 8:53yet his days shall be one hundred and twenty years.
- 8:56There were giants on the earth in those days,
- 8:59and also afterward, when the sons of God came into the daughters of
- 9:03men and they bore children to them,
- 9:05they were the mighty men who were of old men of renown.
- 9:08Then the Lord saw the wickedness of man was great in the earth,
- 9:13and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.
- 9:18And the Lord was sorry that he had made man on the earth,
- 9:22and he was grieved in his heart.
- 9:24So the Lord said, I will destroy man,
- 9:26whom I have created from the face of the earth,
- 9:29both man and beast, creeping things and birds of the air,
- 9:32for I am sorry that I have made them,
- 9:34but Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord.
- 9:37This is the genealogy of Noah.
- 9:40Noah was a just man, perfect in his generations,
- 9:43Noah walked with God. And Noah begot three sons,
- 9:46Shem, Ham, and Japheth.
- 9:48The earth also was corrupt before God,
- 9:50and the earth was filled with violence.
- 9:52So God looked upon the earth, and indeed it was corrupt,
- 9:56for all flesh had corrupted their way on the earth.
- 9:58And God said to Noah, The end of all flesh has come before me,
- 10:03for the earth is filled with violence through them,
- 10:06and behold I will destroy them with the earth.
- 10:09Make yourself an ark of gopher wood,
- 10:12make rooms in the ark, and cover it inside and outside with pitch,
- 10:16and this is how you shall make it.
- 10:17The length of the ark shall be three hundred cubits,
- 10:20its width fifty cubits, its height thirty cubits,
- 10:23you shall make a window for the ark,
- 10:25and you shall finish it to a cubit from above,
- 10:28and set the door of the ark in its side,
- 10:31you shall make it with lower second and third decks,
- 10:34and behold I myself am bringing the flood waters on the earth to destroy from under
- 10:40heaven all flesh in which the br is the breath of life,
- 10:43everything that is on the earth shall die.
- 10:48Because of the wickedness of mankind,
- 10:51because of their persistence in that which is evil,
- 10:56as the book describes it, that they only thought of that which
- 11:01was evil continually. It was the only thing they thought about.
- 11:06It was the only motivation, and their only desire was to do that which is wrong.
- 11:11Now
- 11:14Could that ever happen again? Absolutely.
- 11:17Absolutely. It is part of the reason why it is a necessity
- 11:23for us as members of the body of Christ,
- 11:25as Christians, to continue to teach and to preach the gospel.
- 11:28It is because the world does
- 11:32not trend towards righteousness.
- 11:35It doesn't habitually just decide to do that which is right.
- 11:40The world continues to
- 11:44Push generation after generation towards that which is evil.
- 11:49And it is only through those who are righteous doing what God has commanded them
- 11:54to do that that is held back. And furthermore,
- 11:58you see that God has a willingness to judge the evil that exists in this world.
- 12:05So when you look at
- 12:08The events that are going to transpire in the life of Noah.
- 12:12Noah is going to build the ark just as God commanded him to.
- 12:14God is going to tell Noah to get on the ark,
- 12:19and Noah's going to do that. Noah is going to take him with him those clean animals
- 12:25and those unclean animals that God commands him to do.
- 12:28And then we find chapter 8. Chapter 8,
- 12:33we find in verse 20.
- 12:37As we go down through the text,
- 12:39then Noah built an ark to the Lord,
- 12:41or sorry, an altar to the Lord,
- 12:43and took of every clean animal and of every clean bird,
- 12:48and offered burnt offerings on the altar.
- 12:51When the flood is over, when Noah and his sons and
- 12:56his wife and theirs and his sons' wives depart from the ark,
- 13:01when the animals come off of the ark.
- 13:04We're told that Noah is going to build an altar to the Lord.
- 13:10He's going to take of every clean animal,
- 13:14of every clean bird, and offer burnt offerings on the altar.
- 13:19You notice here that as Noah offers this worship to God,
- 13:25he's going to offer what is acceptable to God.
- 13:32We've already seen in the ~ events of Cain and Abel that Cain offered
- 13:39that which was not acceptable to God.
- 13:42That Abel offered that which pleased the Lord,
- 13:47that which was accepted by God.
- 13:50Here we have another event not too far forward
- 13:55in the text where again we're being told.
- 14:00There's that which is accepted by God,
- 14:03and there's that which is not accepted by God when it comes to worship.
- 14:08And should it be any surprise for us today that that's still the case?
- 14:13Should we be surprised when from the beginning of time God has had
- 14:19a standard of how worship is to be offered in order to be accepted by Him,
- 14:23that He still has a standard? Certainly not.
- 14:26But notice
- 14:28The Lord verse twenty one smelled a smooth aroma,
- 14:32a soothing aroma. Let me get my words out tonight.
- 14:34Then the Lord said at his heart,
- 14:37I will never again curse the ground for man's sake,
- 14:41although the imagination of man's heart is evil from his youth,
- 14:46nor will I again destroy every every living thing as I have done.
- 14:54You know, I have heard it said before,
- 14:56usually by gardeners, that those weeds are the curse that
- 15:02God placed on Adam. No, they're not.
- 15:05We're told here that that curse ended.
- 15:09That wasn't any more in effect the way that it had been.
- 15:16Now
- 15:17There's certainly things that exist in this world that are bane
- 15:21on somebody's existence, especially if they're a gardener.
- 15:24But the thing which God made that caused the earth
- 15:30to be cursed is not in existence anymore.
- 15:36That was something that existed and was for a time before the flood and not now.
- 15:41~ but God says, I'll never do this again.
- 15:46I will never curse the ground for man's sake,
- 15:48although the ~ although the imagination of man's heart is evil from his youth,
- 15:53nor will I again destroy every living thing as I have done.
- 15:58While the earth remains, seed time and harvest,
- 16:01cold and heat, winter and summer,
- 16:04and day and night shall not cease.
- 16:08God makes a promise.
- 16:11That the earth is going to continue to do exactly what he made
- 16:16it to do until he says otherwise.
- 16:21We often ~ hear by a lot of people a
- 16:27lot of ~ tumult, a lot of of worry,
- 16:31a lot of hand-wringing about one thing or another on the planet and
- 16:36How you know it's all going to come to a disastrous end if something doesn't change
- 16:41soon. Usually ~ someone's in an incentive ~ or position to be paid
- 16:47if that thing ~ doesn't change.
- 16:49But you find that they're quite ignorant about what God had said.
- 16:56Now, God didn't always say that it was going to be springtime.
- 17:01And everything was going to be warm and everything was going to
- 17:04be cool and everything was going to have rain everywhere and there wouldn't
- 17:08be any droughts and there wouldn't be any deserts and there wouldn't
- 17:11be any mountains and there wouldn't be any glaciers and there wouldn't be any.
- 17:14He didn't say that, did he? He said rather that the systems that he
- 17:20put in place were going to persist.
- 17:23The systems that he established to maintain the earth would not.
- 17:30deteriorate beyond the point that he allowed them to go.
- 17:34All the way over in the book of Hebrews,
- 17:37we're told in Hebrews chapter 1 that
- 17:43the earth and the world and the universe that we live
- 17:47in is maintained by the word of God's power.
- 17:54We notice Hebrews chapter 1 and verse 1,
- 17:57God who at various times
- 17:59And in various ways spoken time past to the fathers by the prophets,
- 18:03has in these last days spoken to us by his Son,
- 18:06whom he has appointed heir of all things,
- 18:09through whom also he made the worlds,
- 18:12who being the brightness of his glory,
- 18:14and the express image of his person,
- 18:17and upholding all things by the word of his power when he had by himself purged
- 18:23our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high.
- 18:29The universe is not going anywhere.
- 18:31The world is not going anywhere.
- 18:34It's not going anywhere because Jesus Christ isn't going anywhere.
- 18:39And it is his word,
- 18:43it is his authority that allows and demands that
- 18:48the world persist.
- 18:52But isn't that an interesting point to realize?
- 18:55What happened if he ever changed his mind?
- 19:00What happened, I don't know, not in conjecture,
- 19:03but to say, there is a day in which Christ will stop doing
- 19:10that. There is a day in which Christ will return,
- 19:16and the purpose that this physical world and this universe have served
- 19:22in humanity's existence to lead us to eternity will be over.
- 19:27And when they are,
- 19:31Peter will write in second Peter chapter three that it's going to end
- 19:35in the very elements being burned up.
- 19:41Just a little bit of a rabbit chase here.
- 19:47It wasn't until
- 19:51the nineteen forties that we had confirmation that there
- 19:58was more power at the atomic level than
- 20:02had ever been tapped into,
- 20:06let alone unleashed, in this universe.
- 20:12by mail.
- 20:14The atomic bombs that were dropped ~ by the United States
- 20:20in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the testing of the atomic weapons that
- 20:26and nuclear weapons that followed after that was the release
- 20:31of more power in the form of energy power
- 20:37in one decade than all of humanity had released to all knowledge in human history.
- 20:44from the beginning of time to that point,
- 20:46in one decade.
- 20:49So when you think about all of humanity's existence from
- 20:55Genesis all the way until 1940,
- 20:58and you realize that humanity had operated
- 21:04in an incredibly limited scope of knowledge about what God created.
- 21:10And only after 1940 do you have ~ really a new world
- 21:16in which we have insight into
- 21:18That which goes all the way down to the atomic level and the egg
- 21:22the energy that exists at the atomic level.
- 21:29And we have the audacity quite often to think,
- 21:32well, we that was the last thing to discover.
- 21:37That that was the the last nugget of God's creation that we could possibly have have
- 21:43have discovered and imagined and surely we now know the the most powerful thing
- 21:49that we'll ever know about. And I think that's probably nonsense.
- 21:56But then pause for a moment and consider if you think about the power that exists
- 22:01at the atomic level and what we know can be unleashed,
- 22:05what would happen if God ever kept ever stopped keeping
- 22:12it together?
- 22:16If that's what can be released simply by what man can learn,
- 22:21what would happen if God ever stopped holding it together?
- 22:28And we say again. It'd be gone.
- 22:32He made it. He holds it together.
- 22:36We exist because he holds it together.
- 22:40And without that, we don't exist
- 22:46in this physical life, in this physical world,
- 22:49because it will be gone. And there will be a day in which that will occur.
- 22:53But God says, up until that point.
- 22:57This is never going to happen again.
- 22:59God is never going to cause an event to wipe the planet clean like
- 23:06he did in the days of Noah.
- 23:09So as you look at this, you consider,
- 23:13should, that Noah comes
- 23:18off the ark to a clean planet,
- 23:22as it were, wiped clean by the Lord.
- 23:26All the sin, all the wickedness,
- 23:29all the debauchery, all of the things that had been filling the earth,
- 23:33the violence that we just read about,
- 23:35wiped away. Not wiped away pleasantly,
- 23:41but wiped away. But as Noah came off the ark,
- 23:46Noah recognized
- 23:52the Lord in worship.
- 23:56Noah has lived during the time of the flood nearly a year
- 24:01in this boat with these animals.
- 24:04And you can imagine what the sounds would have been like
- 24:11inside the boat.
- 24:15As they listened to the tumult that occurred outside the boat.
- 24:21We're told that God broke up the deep.
- 24:26God raised up new mountains and made new valleys.
- 24:31You don't have to spend much time looking at the footage from
- 24:37~ the event that that took place recently on the border of China and Nepal.
- 24:44or looking at the the scars that still exist in western North Carolina after
- 24:51the hurricane, to realize that when God allows nature
- 24:57to do what nature can do, especially when it comes to water,
- 25:00the landscape changes dramatically and does so incredibly quickly.
- 25:06~ look look at some of the the satellite footage from Nepal before the event.
- 25:13And after the event. And that's just from a glacier breaking loose.
- 25:17So Noah worships God.
- 25:23A God who could remake the planet.
- 25:28A God who could start all over again.
- 25:33A God who could control the deep and the skies above.
- 25:41but also a God who could save them through the midst of it.
- 25:49Noah and his family had a true appreciation for what it meant
- 25:55to be saved by God.
- 25:58Then consider chapter twelve.
- 26:04We put spotlight on some additional events of worship.
- 26:10In Genesis chapter 12, of course,
- 26:13we're introduced in chapter 11 to Abram.
- 26:16We're introduced to his family,
- 26:19and chapter 12, we're introduced to the call of God to come out of his nation,
- 26:26out of his country, out of his family,
- 26:28and from his father's house and go to a land that God would show him.
- 26:33So in Genesis chapter 12, verse 1,
- 26:35we read, Now the Lord said to Abram,
- 26:37Get out of your country, from your family and from your father's house,
- 26:41to a land that I will show you.
- 26:42I will make you a great nation,
- 26:45and I will bless you. I will make your name great,
- 26:48and you shall be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you.
- 26:51I will curse him who curses you.
- 26:53In you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.
- 26:57As the relationship between God and Abram is
- 27:02Is beginning to be unfolded here by Moses.
- 27:05We're told about this covenant promise that God makes to Abram.
- 27:11We're told about what God tells Abram to do.
- 27:16He says, You need to leave your family,
- 27:18you need to leave your country,
- 27:20you need to leave your father's house,
- 27:22and you need to go to the place where I will show you.
- 27:25And so Abram does. Verse 4:
- 27:28Abram departed as the Lord had spoken to him.
- 27:32And Lot went with him, and Abram was seventy five years old when
- 27:36he departed from Haran. Then Abram took Sarai his wife and Lot his brother's
- 27:41son and all their possessions that they had gathered,
- 27:44and the people whom they had acquired in Haran,
- 27:47and they departed to go to the land of Canaan.
- 27:50So they came to the land of Canaan.
- 27:53Abram passed through the land to the place of Shechem,
- 27:56as far as the Terabinth tree of Morah.
- 28:00And the Canaanites were then in the land.
- 28:03And the Lord appeared to Abram and said,
- 28:06To your descendants I will give this land.
- 28:09And there he built an altar to the Lord,
- 28:12who had appeared to him. God has spoken with Abram before
- 28:19when he was in Haran. God speaks to Abram again now that he arrives in Shechem,
- 28:25and God says, This is part of the land that your descendant.
- 28:30descendants will receive. And as Abram stops there in Shechem,
- 28:36Abram will build an altar to the Lord.
- 28:40And he moved from there to the mountain east of Bethel,
- 28:43and he pitched his tent with Bethel on the ~ on the west and Ai on the east,
- 28:50and there he built an altar to the Lord,
- 28:53and called on the name of the Lord.
- 28:56So here we see this continuing action,
- 28:59this
- 28:59This regular activity that Abram was involved in.
- 29:03Abram, when he would go from one place to the next place,
- 29:07when he would arrive there, when he would pitch his tent,
- 29:11when he would prepare to stay in a particular place for an extended period of time,
- 29:16Abram would build an altar. You know,
- 29:21over in James chapter four.
- 29:26James, as he is writing to the Christians and specifically the Jewish Christians
- 29:32in the first century, will write to them and say,
- 29:37beginning in verse 13 of James 4,
- 29:40come now, you who say, Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city,
- 29:46spend a year there, buy and sell and make a profit.
- 29:49Whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow.
- 29:53For what is your life?
- 29:56It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away.
- 30:00Instead you ought to say, If the Lord wills,
- 30:05we shall live and do this or that.
- 30:09But now you boast in your arrogance,
- 30:12all such boasting is evil. Therefore,
- 30:15to him who knows to do good and does not do it,
- 30:18to him it is sin. As James writes to the Christians,
- 30:24he
- 30:26Emphasizes to them that when it comes to your plans,
- 30:31when it comes to your priorities,
- 30:34when it comes to your decision-making process,
- 30:37your first question ought to be:
- 30:41will this accomplish the will of the Lord?
- 30:49The Christians were struggling.
- 30:52You go all the way back into the beginning of chapter four,
- 30:54and they were struggling with more than just where to move to and how long
- 30:58to stay there. They were struggling with the fact that they were asking
- 31:02for things from the Lord only to spend it on their own lusts and desires.
- 31:06They were only interested in what they wanted.
- 31:11And James condemns them for it.
- 31:14James tells them they need to reorder.
- 31:18Their priorities. They need to go back and determine first what is the will
- 31:24of the Lord. And if that is the will of the Lord,
- 31:28then they'll go do it. They need to stop prioritizing prophet
- 31:33and start prioritizing the will of God.
- 31:37As you look at the life of Abram,
- 31:40one of the things that you see is number one,
- 31:44he's following the Lord.
- 31:49He's going where the Lord tells him to go.
- 31:54Secondly, you'll notice that when he arrives anywhere he's going,
- 32:00he's going to worship the Lord.
- 32:06There's not a point in Abram's life where you
- 32:10see Abram departing from God.
- 32:15Abram is very conscientious to go where God desires for him to go,
- 32:22when God desires for him to go there,
- 32:24and when he does go there, he worships the Lord.
- 32:29He builds these altars to the Lord,
- 32:33and interestingly, as you note.
- 32:36~ this particular altar that we just read about is going to be built in Bethel.
- 32:41Where is it that Jacob is going to be when
- 32:47the Lord appears to him as he is fleeing from his father's house
- 32:53and from his brother after he has taken the birthright?
- 32:58Bethel.
- 33:01And so Abram builds an altar.
- 33:04Abram will hear worship the Lord.
- 33:11And Abram will provide an example to us,
- 33:18not just in worship, but in life.
- 33:21Just the same way James emphasizes that our focus needs to be doing
- 33:28the will of the Lord.
- 33:30Our focus needs to be doing that which God desires for us to do.
- 33:34And when we do, God will take care of the rest.
- 33:40And when we don't, James says,
- 33:43when you know to do good and you don't do it.
- 33:49To him it is sin. I remember all the way back when we were in school of preaching,
- 33:54we had a a student come to us and he was young.
- 33:58we were young at the time, but anyway,
- 34:01he was young and and he was not quite happy with
- 34:06the political situation at the time,
- 34:08and it was getting on, I think,
- 34:09election year or whatnot. And ~ and he he came to me one time,
- 34:14he said, Aaron.
- 34:16I've had somebody tell me that if I don't vote,
- 34:19I'm sinning. And specifically if I don't vote for who they think I should vote for,
- 34:24I'm definitely sinning. And they quoted James chapter four,
- 34:28verse seventeen to me.
- 34:31And I said, well, that's not what that passage is talking about.
- 34:35He said, but on the other hand,
- 34:38if you determine to do what you want instead of what the Lord wills,
- 34:42now we have a problem. We need to be careful with passages and keep them
- 34:47in their context. But Abram's going to build this altar at Shechem.
- 34:52He's going to build another altar at Bethel.
- 34:55And then chapter 13.
- 35:04At the end of chapter 12, Abram's going to go down to Egypt,
- 35:07and he's going to remain there because of a famine that was severe in the land,
- 35:12according to chapter 12, verse 10.
- 35:14When Abram returns from Egypt,
- 35:18we find in chapter 13, verse 1,
- 35:20then Abram went up from Egypt,
- 35:23he and his wife and all that he had,
- 35:25and Lot with him to the south.
- 35:29Abram was very rich in livestock in silver and in gold,
- 35:34and he went on his journey from the south as far as Bethel,
- 35:39to the place where his tent had been at the beginning,
- 35:43between Bethel and Ahai, to the place of the altar which he had made there at first,
- 35:50and there Abraham called on the name of the Lord.
- 35:56You notice when Abram comes back up out of Egypt,
- 36:00Abram doesn't say, you know what,
- 36:02I'm a whole lot richer than I was when I came down into Egypt.
- 36:05I don't know that I really need to worry about God anymore.
- 36:10After all, I'm a pretty significant guy at this point.
- 36:15I I I've got plenty of possessions and I'm rich in gold
- 36:20and and and possessions, such gold,
- 36:23silver, livestock. What do I need the Lord for?
- 36:27That's not what Abram does. Abram comes up out of Egypt and he goes right back
- 36:34to that altar.
- 36:37But again, what's the message behind it?
- 36:43God provided for Abraham when he was in the land.
- 36:47God provided for Abraham when he was in Egypt.
- 36:50God provided for Abraham when he came back up out of Egypt.
- 36:54And Abram recognizes that not a thing about
- 37:01his circumstance and his situation was his doing.
- 37:05Except for the trouble that he almost caused by the lie that he told in Egypt.
- 37:12But everything else was God's doing.
- 37:18Abram had a recognition that he owed
- 37:23it all to God. If you turn over to chapter thirteen and verse fourteen.
- 37:33We find verse twelve Abram dwelt in the land of Canaan,
- 37:36and Lot dwelt in the cities of the plain and pitched his tent even as far as Sodom.
- 37:41But the men of Sodom were exceedingly wicked and sinful against the Lord.
- 37:46And the Lord said to Abram after Lot had separated from him,
- 37:50Lift your eyes now and look from the place where you are,
- 37:54northward, southward, eastward,
- 37:57and westward.
- 37:59For all the land which you see I will give to you and your descendants forever,
- 38:05and I will make your descendants as the dust of the earth,
- 38:08so that if a man could number the dust of the earth,
- 38:11then your descendants could be numbered.
- 38:14Arise, walk in the land through its length and its width,
- 38:20for I give it to you. Then Abram moved his tent and went and dwelt
- 38:26by the Terabinth trees of Mamre.
- 38:28Which are in Hebron and built an altar there to the Lord.
- 38:34God tells Abram,
- 38:38after Lot and Abram have separated,
- 38:40he said, You've you've got some traveling to do.
- 38:43You need to go survey the land.
- 38:46You need to go view the land that I'm going to give to your descendants.
- 38:51You need to go to the north, you need to go to the south,
- 38:54you need to go to the east, you need to go to the west,
- 38:56you need to go throughout the land.
- 38:58And you are going to see what I'm going to give to your descendants after
- 39:05you. Now, as God says this to Abram,
- 39:10Abram has no children. Abram is over 75 years old.
- 39:16He has no child. He has no descendants.
- 39:21And as will be pointed out later on.
- 39:24The one who is currently set to inherit all that Abram has is one of his servants.
- 39:33But God is going to make it clear to Abram.
- 39:36I'm going to not only give you servants,
- 39:39I'm going to not only give you possessions,
- 39:43I'm going to not only give you gold and silver,
- 39:45I am going to give you this land,
- 39:47and I am going to give you descendants to fill it,
- 39:51so that if you could number the dust of the earth,
- 39:55you would be able to number your descendants.
- 39:56God is going to make it clear to Abram.
- 40:03That the promise is still in effect.
- 40:05The promise that God had made with Abram in chapter 12,
- 40:09God was still going to fulfill it.
- 40:11No matter how much time transpired,
- 40:14no matter what had happened in the intervening period,
- 40:18Lot was not going to be the one through whom God would fulfill the promise.
- 40:24Abram's servants were not going to be the ones through whom
- 40:28God fulfilled the promise. God was going to provide descendants.
- 40:35But as God sends Abram through the land,
- 40:39what do you find Abram doing? Builds altars,
- 40:43worships the Lord.
- 40:49Wherever he went, you would have found Abram worshiping God.
- 40:55As a matter of fact, it is such an aspect
- 41:01of the life of Abram that over in chapter 22,
- 41:06the test of Abram concerning his faithfulness
- 41:11to God will be couched in worship and Isaac.
- 41:19The two things that Abram would have
- 41:26desired to do no matter what, have a son
- 41:30and worship God were the things with which God tested Abram.
- 42:10Mm-hmm.
- 42:16Absolutely. And you see ~ you see that all the way forward ~
- 42:21to the days in Jesus' time where the altars that
- 42:26are discussed in the mountain of some of the Samaritans being referenced
- 42:32all the way back to the days of Jacob and Isaac ~ and those altars being built
- 42:37there. All right, we're about out of time,
- 42:40so we're gonna go ahead and put a put a plug in it there.
- 42:43But as you think about
- 42:45These passages, what I want you to do as you're reading,
- 42:49as you're doing your own Bible reading,
- 42:51take a note. When worship happens,
- 42:56what are the things that are described around it?
- 43:01What are the things that are going on?
- 43:04And what do we learn about worship,
- 43:08the motivations for worship, the reasons for worship,
- 43:11what is acceptable worship by the circumstance
- 43:16that surrounds the worship that is acceptable to God.
- 43:20Okay? Thank you for your attention.
