- 0:00Speaker 1: Maybe Sean Means got waylaid by a teddy bear picnic.
- 0:04Speaker 2: So we've got an email here of the movies that
- 0:06Speaker 2: are opening. Daybreak Notorious for their teddy bear picnics.
- 0:11Speaker 1: Roaming bands.
- 0:12Speaker 2: There have been several teddy bear attacks in the daybreak.
- 0:17Speaker 2: Resident Evil is opening. Oh, I'm reading good reviews about that. Yeah,
- 0:22Speaker 2: I am too. American Doctor, which is a documentary about Gaza. Oh, really? Yeah,
- 0:30Speaker 2: it's opening at the Broadway. And Sean is giving that
- 0:34Speaker 2: three and a half stars. He said Resident Evil was
- 0:36Speaker 2: not screened for Utah critics. The Wait, which is a
- 0:41Speaker 2: prison heist drama.
- 0:43Speaker 1: That's the one that has Russell Crowe and Ethan Hawke
- 0:47Speaker 1: in it.
- 0:47Speaker 2: Now, is it weight, W-E-I-G-H-T? Yes, the weight.
- 0:50Speaker 3: As in conveying.
- 0:52Speaker 2: Heaviness. Heaviness. Yeah, and.
- 0:54Speaker 1: Because I think it's... They're like stealing gold or something
- 0:58Speaker 1: and having to carry it through the woods.
- 1:01Speaker 2: There's some kind... Well, don't go into the woods with gold.
- 1:04Speaker 1: Exactly.
- 1:05Speaker 2: It seems to me there's some... It's kind of a
- 1:08Speaker 2: quirky movie of some sort. It's... Russell Crowe is Ethan
- 1:13Speaker 2: Hawke's dad or something like that. And then this is
- 1:19Speaker 2: getting good reviews. Sean the Sheep.
- 1:22Speaker 1: Oh, of course.
- 1:23Speaker 2: Sean the Sheep, the beast of Mossy Bottom. Beloved. Yes,
- 1:26Speaker 2: Ardmore Studios. There he is. Get Sean sitting over here.
- 1:32Speaker 2: There he is. And we were just running through the
- 1:37Speaker 2: titles of the movies, Sean, here. So thanks for coming out.
- 1:42Speaker 2: And lean into the microphone. We're on the air.
- 1:49Speaker 1: Where do you want to start?
- 1:50Speaker 2: You didn't get to see Resident Evil.
- 1:52Speaker 3: No, they did not screen that for regional critics.
- 1:56Speaker 2: I'm hearing good things.
- 1:57Speaker 3: Yeah, they didn't screen it early for a lot of
- 1:59Speaker 3: people either. They kept it very close to the vest.
- 2:03Speaker 2: Either it wasn't good, but sometimes they do that because
- 2:06Speaker 2: they think, Well, it's a proven commodity, and it's good,
- 2:11Speaker 2: so we don't need to.
- 2:12Speaker 3: Well, normally I wouldn't have cared because the franchise has
- 2:14Speaker 3: been played out for a very long time.
- 2:16Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:17Speaker 3: But the reboot here, directed by Zach Kreger, who did
- 2:21Speaker 3: Barbarian and Weapons.
- 2:22Speaker 1: Oh, those are really good.
- 2:23Speaker 3: Yeah, they're good.
- 2:24Speaker 1: Barbarian. Yeah.
- 2:25Speaker 3: So I may catch up to it later.
- 2:28Speaker 2: So let's go to American Doctor, which is a documentary.
- 2:33Speaker 3: It's a documentary I saw at Sundance. It follows three
- 2:35Speaker 3: doctors from the U.S., who volunteered their time and risked
- 2:38Speaker 3: their lives to volunteer at a hospital in Gaza. So
- 2:41Speaker 3: they're right in the middle of the violence trying to
- 2:43Speaker 3: save people who have been injured and maimed by the
- 2:46Speaker 3: strikes by the Israeli military. It's a really harrowing documentary.
- 2:50Speaker 3: It really shows the violence of war and how the
- 2:53Speaker 3: people trying to hold everything together can get to the
- 2:55Speaker 3: breaking point.
- 2:56Speaker 1: I'm surprised they were able to film anything.
- 3:00Speaker 3: Some of it is about how some of them were
- 3:02Speaker 3: not allowed back into the country.
- 3:03Speaker 1: They've been coming in and out.
- 3:04Speaker 3: And if you're expecting... Both sides documentary. Consider this is
- 3:10Speaker 3: a documentary about how war hurts and kills people, and
- 3:14Speaker 3: this movie is against.
- 3:15Speaker 2: That, shockingly. In this conflict, are there both sides?
- 3:18Speaker 3: Well, see, that's where you get into it sometimes. We
- 3:21Speaker 3: wouldn't be talking about Macklemore if it wasn't for somebody
- 3:24Speaker 3: saying there's another side. If you want a movie that's
- 3:27Speaker 3: in favor of war, go somewhere else. Three and a
- 3:30Speaker 3: half stars for American Doctor. Wow.
- 3:32Speaker 2: Okay, now The Wait. The Wait. With Russell Crowe and
- 3:35Speaker 2: Ethan Hawke.
- 3:36Speaker 3: Yeah, this is a really strong drama. It's set around
- 3:39Speaker 3: a prison chain gang in the 1930s during the Depression.
- 3:43Speaker 3: We're mostly watching this one guy, Murphy, played by Ethan Hawke.
- 3:47Speaker 3: He ended up in Oregon prison for one small mistake,
- 3:50Speaker 3: and it's likely to mean he'll lose his daughter to
- 3:52Speaker 3: adoption because his daughter's in the system. In the system.
- 4:00Speaker 3: But the warden running the prison labor camp, played by
- 4:02Speaker 3: Russell Crowe, offers him a chance to get out sooner.
- 4:06Speaker 3: The warden has a buddy who runs a gold mine
- 4:08Speaker 3: in the Oregon woods, and the government is about to
- 4:12Speaker 3: confiscate all the gold to get the U.S. off the
- 4:14Speaker 3: gold standard. So the guy who's running the mine wants
- 4:18Speaker 3: some strong backs to carry some gold 100 miles through
- 4:21Speaker 3: the woods. So the warden tells Murphy he can choose
- 4:24Speaker 3: three of his fellow inmates, and if they can get
- 4:25Speaker 3: the gold across, they'll get their freedom. The problem is
- 4:28Speaker 3: it's a long haul. There's dangerous people on the path.
- 4:31Speaker 3: And even if they make it through all that, there's
- 4:33Speaker 3: no guarantee the warden's not going to double-cross him.
- 4:35Speaker 2: Yeah, that's true.
- 4:36Speaker 3: But Murphy has no good options, so he says yes.
- 4:40Speaker 3: This is a really solid thriller. Lots of danger on
- 4:42Speaker 3: the route. Ethan Hawke reminds us how good he is here.
- 4:46Speaker 1: Doesn't he always do that?
- 4:47Speaker 3: He's been around so long. He's been doing so much
- 4:50Speaker 3: that you forget how good he can be.
- 4:52Speaker 2: You know, it's funny. I never thought about him being
- 4:55Speaker 2: good or bad until I saw that film. miniseries on TV,
- 4:59Speaker 2: The Good Lord Bird. The Good Lord Bird. I went, man,
- 5:04Speaker 2: he's great. And then I've watched a lot of stuff
- 5:07Speaker 2: since then. He's always good.
- 5:08Speaker 3: He doesn't talk a lot in this movie, which is
- 5:10Speaker 3: so different from the last one, Blue Moon, where he
- 5:12Speaker 3: was playing Lawrence Hart, which he got the Oscar nomination for.
- 5:18Speaker 3: He's smart. He knows how to keep quiet. And he's
- 5:22Speaker 3: good at sizing up all the angles and figuring.
- 5:24Speaker 2: Out how to get through this. Who are his sidekicks?
- 5:26Speaker 2: Are they good?
- 5:26Speaker 3: I don't recognize any of the actors.
- 5:28Speaker 2: The other two guys.
- 5:29Speaker 1: And I usually root for Russell Crowe. I want him
- 5:32Speaker 1: to do well.
- 5:34Speaker 2: Is he good?
- 5:35Speaker 3: He's pretty good in a supporting role, yeah. So it's
- 5:38Speaker 3: really nerve-rattling, I think, in a good way. Three and
- 5:41Speaker 3: a half stars for the weight. And it's playing in
- 5:43Speaker 3: several places around town, around the Valley.
- 5:45Speaker 2: Oh, we should point out the American Doctor is at
- 5:47Speaker 2: the Broadway. I don't know if we mentioned that. Sean
- 5:50Speaker 2: the Sheep, the Beast of Mossy Bottom. Yes.
- 5:53Speaker 3: This is a rare thing, a Halloween movie that all
- 5:56Speaker 3: ages can watch and enjoy. Sean the Sheep is a
- 6:00Speaker 3: spin-off character from Wallace and Gromit. Very funny and very British,
- 6:05Speaker 3: clay animated characters. Sean's been on his own for decades.
- 6:09Speaker 3: He's actually the star of one of the most popular
- 6:11Speaker 3: children's cartoon shows in the world.
- 6:13Speaker 1: Yeah. Good for him.
- 6:15Speaker 3: And this is his third movie. It's Halloween. Sean and
- 6:18Speaker 3: his farm friends are preparing to celebrate. They have a
- 6:20Speaker 3: secret pumpkin patch where they've grown some really impressive pumpkins.
- 6:23Speaker 2: Oh.
- 6:24Speaker 3: Unfortunately, their farmer stumbles onto the patch, literally, and he
- 6:28Speaker 3: destroys the pumpkins.
- 6:29Speaker 1: Uh-oh.
- 6:30Speaker 3: So Sean, who's kind of a scientist on the side.
- 6:33Speaker 2: A scientist sheep, of course.
- 6:34Speaker 3: A scientist sheep, of course. He figures out a secret
- 6:36Speaker 3: formula to make the remaining pumpkin seeds grow into full
- 6:39Speaker 3: pumpkins in just a few days. Oh.
- 6:41Speaker 2: Mm-hmm.
- 6:42Speaker 3: The problem comes when the formula gets mixed up with
- 6:44Speaker 3: the farmer's hair-growing lotion.
- 6:47Speaker 2: As it does.
- 6:48Speaker 3: And soon enough, the farmer has become the British version
- 6:51Speaker 3: of Bigfoot, and the whole town is afraid for their lives.
- 6:54Speaker 2: But he's still just the farmer.
- 6:55Speaker 3: He's still just the farmer, but he looks like a
- 6:58Speaker 3: big pile of hair. I love that the folks at
- 7:02Speaker 3: Aardman can do these movies, which crank out so many
- 7:04Speaker 3: jokes in short running time, and do it without any dialogue.
- 7:10Speaker 3: People just grunt and hum and so on. They can
- 7:14Speaker 3: pull off some really clever gags. There's a Game of
- 7:16Speaker 3: Thrones joke in here that had me on the floor.
- 7:21Speaker 3: And it's very fast-paced. The chase scenes, some family safe scares.
- 7:26Speaker 3: It is just ridiculously funny. And it's only 80 minutes long,
- 7:29Speaker 3: so you're in and out. Sean the Sheep, The Beast
- 7:32Speaker 3: of Mossy Bottom, three and a half stars, and it's
- 7:35Speaker 3: playing everywhere.
- 7:36Speaker 2: You know, I heard a national critic this morning say,
- 7:39Speaker 2: give it a good review, and say it's a good
- 7:43Speaker 2: thing that this kind of movie making, this form of
- 7:46Speaker 2: movie making is going away. Only Ardmore and then that,
- 7:50Speaker 2: what are the companies? Laika. Laika, yeah, Laika.
- 7:55Speaker 3: Laika, Ardmore, and Cartoon Saloon in Ireland.
- 7:57Speaker 2: They did like Wolfwalkers. But the interesting thing, so I
- 8:01Speaker 2: watched a little preview of that Laika. It's different. Ardmore
- 8:07Speaker 2: is claymation, so I don't know what distinguishes what Leica does,
- 8:12Speaker 2: and it's still considered stop-motion.
- 8:14Speaker 3: Leica uses stop-motion mostly puppetry. They 3D-print their figures mostly
- 8:21Speaker 3: and manipulate them that way.
- 8:23Speaker 2: I see. Well, claymation has always been a fun of
- 8:28Speaker 2: Gumby and Pokey.
- 8:31Speaker 3: And it's very tactile. On some of the earlier Wallace
- 8:33Speaker 3: and Gromit, you can actually see Nick Park's thumbprint Yeah.
- 8:36Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 8:38Speaker 3: I mean, you can use it as an FBI ID.
- 8:41Speaker 2: Yeah. So there you go. Some good movies. And now
- 8:45Speaker 2: coming up next. Next week. It's primetime.
- 8:48Speaker 3: Primetime, which is Robert Pattinson playing Chris Hansen, the Dave
- 8:52Speaker 3: Lyon NBC guy.
- 8:53Speaker 1: Why don't you have a seat?
- 8:54Speaker 3: Have a seat there, yeah.
- 8:56Speaker 2: Part of the Beast?
- 8:57Speaker 3: Part of the Beast, which is a survival drama with
- 8:59Speaker 3: Brad Pitt and a dog.
- 9:00Speaker 2: Oh! Cool dog.
- 9:03Speaker 1: The dog has a fake leg.
- 9:05Speaker 3: Forgotten Island, which is DreamWorks animated. It's from the same
- 9:10Speaker 3: folks that made the Puss in Boots movies.
- 9:13Speaker 2: Oh, okay. Yeah, those are good. All right, Sean, you
- 9:17Speaker 2: made it out here. Thank you for coming. Sorry for
- 9:20Speaker 2: the rush. That's all right. It's fine. Thank you for
- 9:22Speaker 2: doing it.
