- 0:04Here's your industry news brief for Wednesday, May 31st. First,
- 0:09legislation about healthcare staffing remains under consideration in some
- 0:13states. Two governors recently signed bills into law.
- 0:18Last week,
- 0:19Minnesota passed an edited bill titled The Nurse and Patient Safety Act.
- 0:23It focuses on workplace violence prevention, nurse burnout,
- 0:27and loan forgiveness. It cuts staffing legislation from the bill completely.
- 0:32In New Jersey,
- 0:33a bill sitting in committee would establish minimum RN staffing standards.
- 0:38This would impact hospitals, ambulatory surgery facilities,
- 0:42and certain DHS services. Last month,
- 0:45Washington Governor j Insley signed SB 5 2 36.
- 0:51It requires hospitals to report at least 80% compliance with its specific ratio.
- 0:57Its internal staffing committee approves its ratio that focuses on nurse to
- 1:01patient staffing.
- 1:03Hospitals that do not comply are subject to corrective action plans and fines as
- 1:08much as $50,000 every month.
- 1:10Connecticut lawmakers were considering a bill to mandate nurse staffing ratios
- 1:14and hospitals. However,
- 1:16legislators are now focusing on strengthening hospital staffing committees.
- 1:22A new proposed amendment would require hospital admin to get approval from the
- 1:26hospital staffing committee before sending annual staffing plans to Connecticut
- 1:30officials. Second,
- 1:34the San Jose Police Department says a man in custody died last week after
- 1:38falling 20 feet from a window at a California hospital.
- 1:42The man was in custody for violating a court order.
- 1:45He was admitted to O'Connor Hospital in San Jose for a preexisting medical
- 1:49condition.
- 1:51Around 2:00 AM the man threatened to strike an officer and nurse in his room
- 1:54with a metal oxygen tank. The officer and nurse left the room to get help.
- 1:59At that time, the man used the tank to break a window and jump onto a ledge.
- 2:04He fell from the ledge.
- 2:05He was provided immediate medical care and was transported to a nearby trauma
- 2:10hospital. He was later pronounced dead.
- 2:12The Santa Clara County DA's office in the San Jose PDs homicide unit
- 2:17launched a joint criminal investigation into the incident.
- 2:21Beckers has reached out to O'Connor Hospital for comment.
- 2:25We'll update the online article if more information becomes available.
- 2:29Third, new research from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation finds out racism and
- 2:34discrimination from both patients and colleagues are widespread in the nursing
- 2:39industry. However, you nurses report these incidents. Last year,
- 2:44a non-probability sample of almost 1000 nurses were surveyed.
- 2:48Almost 80% of nurses say they have witnessed or experienced discrimination from
- 2:52patients. 60% say the same from a colleague.
- 2:56Black slash African-American nurses.
- 2:59Are the most likely to have seen or experienced racism from both patients or
- 3:03colleagues.
- 3:04About 40% of nurses say they've talked about incidents of racism or
- 3:08discrimination with their supervisors. However,
- 3:11less than 25% formerly report these incidents.
- 3:15While the prevalence with still high nurses working at a physician's office or
- 3:19clinic,
- 3:19we're less likely to witness or experience racism compared to those working in
- 3:24nursing homes or hospitals.
- 3:26Over 40% of nurses say their nursing school had a culture of racism and
- 3:30discrimination over half.
- 3:32Also say there should be more training for racial bias and diversity inclusion.
- 3:37Most nurses say their organizations prioritize D E I initiatives around patient
- 3:42outcomes and staffing. Some highlight the need for more training and investment.
- 3:47About 80% of nurses give examples for retaining a diverse nursing staff.
- 3:52This includes zero tolerance, workplace discrimination policies,
- 3:56clear consequences for reported incidents, and reporting anonymously.
- 4:02Fourth, in two years,
- 4:03about 185 hospital staffing complaints were filed to Washington's Department of
- 4:08Health. None resulted in fines.
- 4:11Washington's new bill ensures hospital staffing standards.
- 4:14It does not mandate the staff to patient ratio. Instead,
- 4:18it requires hospital staffing committees to recommend ratio rules to their
- 4:22leadership before submitting the plan to state officials.
- 4:25One example of under staffing is St. Michael Medical Center in Silverdale.
- 4:30The hospital is part of Virginia Mason Franciscan Health.
- 4:33It received over 30 staffing complaints last year.
- 4:37It was also where a nurse called 9 1 1 asking for e EMS teams to help.
- 4:41With its overcrowded. Its chief nursing officer is stepping down next month.
- 4:46It only took 11 days for the Department of Health to clear the complaint.
- 4:50It states that based on the information provided,
- 4:54no violation of hospital law occurred. Fifth,
- 4:58as the shortages for cancer drugs grow worse,
- 5:01some oncologists are rationing the drugs and delay treatment.
- 5:06As of last week, the FDA list 14 cancer drugs in shortage.
- 5:10One is carboplatin.
- 5:11It's a chemotherapy agent and used as a first line treatment for multiple
- 5:15cancers.
- 5:16A survey from the Society of Gynecologic Oncology shows physicians in at least
- 5:2140 states had at least one chemotherapy drug and shortage.
- 5:26Some shortages are due to a single manufacturer in India halted production.
- 5:31After quality concerns,
- 5:33the FDA is working with other manufacturers to have more carboplatin.
- 5:37Thanks for listening.
