Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Scuffles and skirmishes between police and protesters in Glasgow. Gevin
- 0:04Speaker 1: grins how Uken you're corresponding, Gvin?
- 0:06Speaker 2: What's going on in Glasgow, Scotland? More anti racism protesters
- 0:10Speaker 2: meeted and greeted more anti immigration demonstrators in what became
- 0:15Speaker 2: a pretty tense standoff. Trying to keep those two groups separated.
- 0:19Speaker 2: Police briefly drew their batons and shouted at the protesters
- 0:23Speaker 2: to get away, with two people arrested during the protests,
- 0:26Speaker 2: but there were pretty unpleasant scenes in and around George Square.
- 0:31Speaker 2: So what happened was two to three thousand people joined
- 0:34Speaker 2: an anti racism rally, but about three hundred and fifty
- 0:38Speaker 2: people were at a rival demonstration calling on the government
- 0:41Speaker 2: to get much tougher on those coming across illegally on
- 0:45Speaker 2: the small boats. And then a group of mass men
- 0:48Speaker 2: believe to be a sort of ultra group of Celtic
- 0:51Speaker 2: football fans, a so called Green Brigade, had to be
- 0:54Speaker 2: contained in a corner of the square as they believed
- 0:57Speaker 2: they were sort of coming up behind the anti racism group.
- 1:01Speaker 2: But at one point a man brandishing what appeared to
- 1:03Speaker 2: be two sticks rushing towards the square was grabbed by
- 1:06Speaker 2: police and bundled into the back of a van, with
- 1:09Speaker 2: the barriers trying to keep the two groups of demonstrators apart,
- 1:13Speaker 2: at one point being overwhelmed. But anyway, police I think
- 1:16Speaker 2: would be pretty keen that it passed off reasonably peacefully.
- 1:20Speaker 1: Yeah, sounds like it. I remember Gonzalees, the Venezuelan opposition
- 1:24Speaker 1: leader presidential candidate. He has fed to Spain.
- 1:28Speaker 2: Yes, and that is because a Spanish air Force plane
- 1:32Speaker 2: carrying him landed in an airbase in Madrid. He's going
- 1:34Speaker 2: to be granted political asylum there. He's been hiding in
- 1:38Speaker 2: Venezuela because there's been a warrant for his arrest issued
- 1:41Speaker 2: after the opposition disputed the presidential election result back in
- 1:45Speaker 2: July that saw the incumbent, Nicolas Maduro handed a third term.
- 1:51Speaker 2: There are thoughts that he and mister Gozales felt for
- 1:54Speaker 2: his life frankly feared for his life, and other opposition
- 1:59Speaker 2: organized as a saying that the Maduro administration has unleashed
- 2:03Speaker 2: a brutal wave of repression following the election. Now many
- 2:07Speaker 2: people are questioning the election results, which Nicholas Maduro said
- 2:12Speaker 2: that he won easily, but some are saying, look, we'll
- 2:15Speaker 2: publish the voting tallies. There's international pressure for him to
- 2:19Speaker 2: do that. They simply do not believe the scores that
- 2:22Speaker 2: have come out of these votes, and countries include in
- 2:26Speaker 2: the US, the European Union, the majority of foreign governments
- 2:29Speaker 2: refusing to accept Nicholas Maduro as the winner without Caracas
- 2:33Speaker 2: releasing that voting data.
- 2:35Speaker 1: Gevin, thank you for that, Kevin Gray are UK You
- 2:38Speaker 1: correspond interestingly, a lot of people questioning that result, of
- 2:41Speaker 1: course when you've got a dictator like Maduro in charge.
- 2:44Speaker 1: But the Venezuelans I think will vote with their fate,
- 2:47Speaker 1: more of them. So in the past ten years the
- 2:49Speaker 1: GDP and Venezuela has dropped eighty percent, and just ten
- 2:53Speaker 1: years and seven million people have immigrated out of the year.
- 2:57Speaker 1: This is a country of just twenty eight million people.
- 3:00Speaker 1: So you'd have to say, with more problems and the
- 3:02Speaker 1: opposition leader having to flee, more of them will do
- 3:05Speaker 1: the same. And then what does that create border issues
- 3:09Speaker 1: for the US. I'm sure something that will be discussed
- 3:13Speaker 1: in the debate that is coming with Harris and Trump
- 3:16Speaker 1: on Wednesday.
