- 0:00I want to say something that I remember you teaching me and I
- 0:05want you to comment on it and you might not remember this but
- 0:10it it helped me. It changed my life and you did
- 0:13you don't know this but you saved my life as you know I was.
- 0:18No, I mean this. I'm very serious when I say this
- 0:21as you know I can't help it but I was born hyper the whole deal.
- 0:26So I I'm at Dover and you and I are sitting on pit wall
- 0:321989199091 somewhere in there and you looked at me and you
- 0:39said, do you plan on racing for a long time?
- 0:44And I said yes. And you said Kenny, you got you
- 0:46got to calm down. Now, you might not remember
- 0:51that, but I remember it like yesterday and I was probably
- 0:55venting to you that my car wasn't doing this.
- 0:58Yeah, when I look back on that time, I look, first of all, I
- 1:03look up to you because I think you're awesome and you're you're
- 1:09you're a calm natured athlete. Where does that come from?
- 1:14And when you told me that as you're thinking right now in
- 1:18your head, where did you come? Where did you come from?
- 1:22I mean, how did you grow up? Calm and I.
- 1:25You know what I mean? My dad built Natural Bridge
- 1:28Speedway in 67 your. Dad built that racetrack.
- 1:32You did. They opened it in 67.
- 1:34Whoa, whoa, whoa. This is a big story here now.
- 1:37OK, keep going. And I would witness as a little
- 1:42boy during the week, the phone ringing off the wall at the
- 1:45house and people calling and just lambasted my dad, cussing
- 1:50and raising them. My dad didn't, he didn't hardly
- 1:52have a pot piss in either of those days, but he was able to
- 1:54make things work. But I would listen to people
- 1:57just lambasted all week long from you competitors, and it
- 2:02still goes on today. Same deal.
- 2:04And I would go to the racetrack as a little boy.
- 2:06I'd watch guys down there. I mean, get in fights.
- 2:09I mean, not playing, you know, not Mickey Mouse and I mean
- 2:12fights. I'd watch all this stuff and
- 2:16then when I started racing, I had to deal with that.
- 2:18I had to deal with that same stuff myself.
- 2:21And in the early days, it's kind of like Schrader told me one
- 2:24time, he said he told the guy that was mad at him, let's sit
- 2:26down and have a beer and drink, talk about it instead of fight.
- 2:28You know, it's my fighter. Well, I, I, I came to that
- 2:31conclusion a lot earlier in life because some stuff I went
- 2:34through here locally early, you know, with with with
- 2:38roughhousing or fighting and stuff that you learned.
- 2:41You know what it really meant to get in a fight.
- 2:45You know, you got in a fight. It was like you see now, it
- 2:48wasn't that a fight then was a fight.
- 2:50I mean, you're going to be. Punching you in the face.
- 2:52And you're going to somebody's going to end up standing and
- 2:55some guys not, right. And I witnessed that and a lot
- 3:00and went through a little bit of it and, you know, over a period
- 3:04of time. And I'll tell you something else
- 3:05that happened, Kenny, in 1980, whatever we were at
- 3:08Martinsville, I didn't have for the big double hitter.
- 3:11You know, the modified. I didn't have radios, right.
- 3:14I had wiring hardest, but I didn't have radios.
- 3:16I just couldn't afford them. I went up to Richie Evans, the
- 3:19great Richie Evans, the Dale Earnhardt Richard Petty of
- 3:21Northeast Racing greatest it ever was.
- 3:23I guess modified. I just went up to him introduce
- 3:26myself. I said, Rich, you don't know me.
- 3:27I said, but I'll drive it 22. Car was like in the Bush series
- 3:31or whatever. It was like by.
- 3:32I guess your Bush did. I don't have radios.
- 3:35Would you rent me your radios after the race Sunday?
- 3:38And we talked for a little bit. I think it took me back.
- 3:39Anyhow, we end up making a deal, right?
- 3:42So the race, his race is run. First it was over.
- 3:45I go, we grab the radios, his crew guys radio out of his car.
- 3:48I even use his helmet because the earpiece is made in the
- 3:51helmet. I put his sweaty asshole helmet
- 3:54on and run my. Oh gosh.
- 3:56Yes, true story, true story. And the race is over.
- 4:00We run the race. I take my stuff back to Richie.
- 4:02I said. Richie here.
- 4:03I appreciate it. I work, you know, so thankful
- 4:05how much to owe you. And he looked at me, said Rick.
- 4:08I don't know. I've never rented radios before.
- 4:10I don't know what it's worth. I said, well, I'm not sure
- 4:12either. I mean, I you just tell me and
- 4:14I'll pay you because I finished that day so I had money, right?
- 4:17And and we sit there and he, he didn't know what to do.
- 4:20He finally said, you going to be here for the next race in the
- 4:22spring or the fall, whatever it was.
- 4:24I said, yeah, He said meet me at the Dutch in on Saturday night.
- 4:27Buy me a beer. Let's call it even, right?
- 4:29I'm like, it's like being to me. It felt like being anointed by
- 4:33the Pope, you know? Yeah.
- 4:36This is Richie Evans. Yeah, we go back for the next
- 4:39race and I'm standing on Pit Rd. Then it modifies the proxy and
- 4:44we're on the back stretch. And I'm just watching them
- 4:46because we've been on the track yet.
- 4:47And I watched Richie come out of Turn 2.
- 4:49I watched him go in Turn three. I see he's left front wheel kick
- 4:51out right, he locks up, he goes right into the wall.
- 4:54Oh no, I know where you're. I know where you're going with
- 4:57this. I'm so sorry.
- 4:59And we lost Richie. The one part of that story I
- 5:04forgot to tell you when we were sitting there that morning
- 5:07before the race, I'm trying to joke with Richie a little bit.
- 5:11I say, Richie, I said normally I'd bet on you to win this race
- 5:14day because you always win every time I come down here, I said.
- 5:16But my guy said they seen you being dragged out of the Dutch
- 5:19Inn this morning, at 4:30 in the morning, right.
- 5:22Richie was a partier, right? Richie loved to party.
- 5:25My guys, of course they were up too.
- 5:27They said. And I said I don't know if you
- 5:30get drug out of the you were drug out of the.
- 5:33That's in at 4:30 this morning. You would have mean from
- 5:35partying. I don't think I'll bet on you
- 5:37today. And he said something and I gave
- 5:39him a little more. I think it irritated me.
- 5:41Fine. Looked at me.
- 5:41Let me tell you something, boy. He said.
- 5:43You only hear a blink of an eye. He says work hard, treat people
- 5:48right and be happy, right. I'm like, OK.
- 5:52When he hit that wall, Kenny, I was sitting there and looking at
- 5:55it and then when the rescue went there and I remember Andy Hall
- 5:59come by me, said we lost Richie, right.
- 6:01And I remember thinking work hard, treat people right and be
- 6:06happy, right. And I I kind of, I kind of
- 6:11accepted that monitor you might say.
- 6:13And I it it changed how I started looking at things and
- 6:17doing things right. It made me, I guess it made me
- 6:21realize, you know there's a little bit bigger picture than
- 6:23this lap. This last lap we just ran and
- 6:26what the car is doing, which leads into your deal, right?
- 6:31You know, you get so wrapped up in that moment of what you're
- 6:34doing. You know, you're just like, I
- 6:37mean, you know the deal, Kenny and NASCAR trying to get up
- 6:40through where any any of this race would really down.
- 6:42But yeah, I mean, you're like trying to put out the Hells of
- 6:45fire, the fire of Hells with a squirt gun, you know what I
- 6:47mean? And sometimes you need divine
- 6:49adventure to help you. When you came to me with that,
- 6:52right that day you were, you were.
- 6:55And you brought this up to me before years ago.
- 6:57Then that may remember back to it.
- 7:00And then that's like that's how I'm still able to remember.
- 7:02If you hadn't brought that up a few years ago, I probably forgot
- 7:05about. But the deal was, Kenny, I was I
- 7:08would help anybody do anything. But if, if, if there's somebody
- 7:11I didn't really care for, you know, I didn't do, I didn't do
- 7:14anything. Right.
- 7:17You know, I'd be cordial dice. But you were one of those guys.
- 7:20I mean, I watched you when you came in.
- 7:22Oh, hell. Here's here's Rusty Wallace's
- 7:23brother, right? Hell, he'll be like the rest of
- 7:25these guys they had to fight with, right?
- 7:27And it become apparent very soon that Rusty was making Kenny
- 7:31Wallace earning this on his own. You know what I mean?
- 7:33You. Can hear.
- 7:36Myself Lame can help you get there little bit, but when
- 7:39you're there, you better do your own deal, man, and your ass will
- 7:41get kicked out. And I watched you and I was
- 7:44around you and I was around Raquel Kim and I I you know
- 7:50you're one of those guys that. And I'm better at this than I
- 7:54used to be. I used to be pretty good at.
- 7:55But I'm better now. I could I could.
- 7:57I feel like I'm a good person. Good at judging people's heart.
- 8:00I I go off of people's heart, right.
- 8:03I don't give a damn what you say, what you do.
- 8:05I want to see what your inner being is, right.
- 8:07And you, you always come across me as one of those guys.
- 8:10It's just good hearted son of a bitch, right?
- 8:14And I see so many guys in your position.
- 8:18I was in that position. I know exactly what you were
- 8:20feeling and what you were going through.
- 8:22And but I I I wanted you to succeed, right?
- 8:25And in that moment when you were where you were at and you're so
- 8:29encapsulated in that moment that you couldn't, you know, release
- 8:34it enough to be able to make rational decisions and that
- 8:37screws you up and racing man. If you don't, if you get that
- 8:40I've seen guys ruin careers ruining, I can say names and you
- 8:43don't too, of of getting in that mindset that it completely
- 8:47screws them up and they can't think about the bigger picture
- 8:50because all they're worried about is the last two races and
- 8:52the cars doing this and I can't fix it, right.
- 8:55Well, you got to get out of that a little bit, you know what I
- 8:57mean? And that's where you were at
- 8:58that point. And I was just trying to you
- 9:01know, just make you see a light. It's it's different.
- 9:04And you're not the only person that ever said that to something
- 9:06like that. Do you?
- 9:06But maybe not. But anyhow, that's the reason I
- 9:09did that. So if I.
- 9:10Didn't do it. I love you and I haven't told
- 9:13anybody I love him yet on the 32 episodes that we've done, and
- 9:17you saved my life that day.
