- 0:57Speaker 2: with host Dale Cooper and John Verdet from to have
- 1:00Speaker 2: any financial.
- 1:01Speaker 3: Guest and very pleasant good Monday morning to you. Once again.
- 1:03Speaker 4: You are listening to retire Write Radio on five adwc
- 1:06Speaker 4: HS the Voice of Charleston. Thanks so much for tuning
- 1:09Speaker 4: in on what is going to shape up to be
- 1:11Speaker 4: a pretty darn beautiful Monday. I do believe in studio
- 1:14Speaker 4: with me today and this is our second show now
- 1:17Speaker 4: our from one of our new studios. We're going to
- 1:19Speaker 4: have yet another one coming up here relatively soon. But John,
- 1:22Speaker 4: our dad is here from Fourth Avenue Financial John, Good morning.
- 1:24Speaker 3: How you doing. I'm doing great. Yeah.
- 1:26Speaker 4: Nice new digs. A little different, isn't it a little different?
- 1:28Speaker 4: We can actually look at each other. I was just thinking,
- 1:31Speaker 4: I don't think I've ever talked to you other than
- 1:33Speaker 4: when you were standing or on a stool. So it's
- 1:35Speaker 4: actually kind of interesting too. With Harvey Payton last week,
- 1:38Speaker 4: it was the same way as like, Harvey, I'm actually
- 1:39Speaker 4: talking to you and we're sitting down and having a conversation. Yeah,
- 1:42Speaker 4: instead of leaning on a stool, which is what we've
- 1:43Speaker 4: been doing for years. Studio folks, not the bar.
- 1:46Speaker 3: Yeah yeah, yeah, yeah exactly.
- 1:47Speaker 4: We had an elevated We had an elevated studio before
- 1:50Speaker 4: where we had to sit behind stools, and now we
- 1:52Speaker 4: have a traditional sit down studio, which I actually.
- 1:55Speaker 3: Much prefer I don't really. I don't really love the
- 1:56Speaker 3: elevated studios all that much.
- 1:57Speaker 4: So anyway, it's very nice, especially to here and have discussions,
- 2:01Speaker 4: and it's the room is very nicely insulated. There's no
- 2:05Speaker 4: noise outside in the hallway, which is something that we've
- 2:07Speaker 4: had for years at their previous locations.
- 2:09Speaker 5: So it's just nice new equipment. The microphone stay where
- 2:12Speaker 5: they're supposed to be.
- 2:14Speaker 4: You had another little bit of inside ball the especially
- 2:17Speaker 4: the host Mike and the other studio. I could never
- 2:20Speaker 4: get that thing to stay where it needed to go,
- 2:22Speaker 4: and it kept on falling. It would happen during the
- 2:23Speaker 4: show if you would hear just like a random laugh
- 2:26Speaker 4: during the show during an otherwise serious conversation, Probably nine
- 2:30Speaker 4: times out of ten, that's what was going on as
- 2:31Speaker 4: my mic was acting up. But we don't have to
- 2:33Speaker 4: worry about that anymore. Pretty soon, our listeners are going
- 2:35Speaker 4: to know as much about our new studios as we
- 2:37Speaker 4: do because we talk about them all the time. But
- 2:39Speaker 4: believe me, if you've been here for as long as
- 2:41Speaker 4: I have, and Chris and Jeff and all these guys,
- 2:44Speaker 4: this has been a decade plus coming and Charleston had
- 2:48Speaker 4: been its last update. I started working here for the
- 2:51Speaker 4: first time in nineteen ninety two, and I was actually
- 2:56Speaker 4: I came here under the last ownership, but Don Cook
- 2:59Speaker 4: brought me into work, and then they I got laid
- 3:04Speaker 4: off when the new company came in. When Western ear
- 3:06Speaker 4: Radio Corporation came in, I got laid off, and then
- 3:08Speaker 4: I got rehired on the other side of things, so
- 3:10Speaker 4: I actually got to see like when they bought the
- 3:12Speaker 4: building and then they did the remodel the first time around,
- 3:15Speaker 4: and then I saw it through the other side. That
- 3:16Speaker 4: was in nineteen ninety two. That equipment that was here
- 3:19Speaker 4: in nineteen ninety two when the initial purchase went through
- 3:22Speaker 4: and some and some of the expansion was made then
- 3:26Speaker 4: was what we were still producing radio one through early
- 3:30Speaker 4: this year. So we're talking considerably aged equipment from there.
- 3:35Speaker 4: I saw it come in and I saw it go out,
- 3:37Speaker 4: although I had been all over the world in between.
- 3:39Speaker 5: It's funny how the equipment aged. But you have yeah, yeah, right,
- 3:43Speaker 5: I have an age at all.
- 3:43Speaker 4: Anyway, John, our dad is here for Fourth Avenue Financial
- 3:45Speaker 4: more information online. It's Fourth Avenue Financial dot com. You
- 3:48Speaker 4: spell out the whole thing Fourth Avenue Financial and put
- 3:50Speaker 4: a dot com behind it, or go to Facebook and
- 3:52Speaker 4: search that out and you can find out more information
- 3:53Speaker 4: about Fourth Avenue Financial right. There plenty of stuff that
- 3:56Speaker 4: we want to talk about today. One of the things
- 3:57Speaker 4: we're going to get into a little bit later on,
- 3:59Speaker 4: and this is something that taking phone calls, by the way,
- 4:01Speaker 4: at our regular phone line again three zero four three
- 4:03Speaker 4: four five fifty eight fifty eight. Three zero four three
- 4:05Speaker 4: four five fifty eight fifty eight. If you have any
- 4:07Speaker 4: questions for John this morning, give us a call. We'll
- 4:09Speaker 4: get you on the air waves this morning. Get your
- 4:12Speaker 4: question ready to go, and to give me your name
- 4:14Speaker 4: and the city you're calling from, and we'll get you
- 4:16Speaker 4: right on the air. Three zero four three four five
- 4:18Speaker 4: fifty eight fifty eight. You can text three zero four
- 4:19Speaker 4: non three five five zero zero eight three zero four
- 4:22Speaker 4: none three five five zero er eight. Some of the
- 4:23Speaker 4: things we want to talk on this morning, we're going
- 4:25Speaker 4: to talk about some of the financial rules of thumb.
- 4:27Speaker 4: And there's a little over a half dozen some of
- 4:30Speaker 4: them or so that John's kind of highlighted for us
- 4:32Speaker 4: this morning.
- 4:32Speaker 3: These are things that.
- 4:33Speaker 4: You hear a lot of you hear, you know, different ratios,
- 4:36Speaker 4: different different sort of sayings or expressions that help with investing.
- 4:40Speaker 4: John's want to go over some of those and the
- 4:42Speaker 4: situations that they work for, that they may not work for,
- 4:44Speaker 4: how that you can apply them to you, and exactly
- 4:47Speaker 4: what those means and how those rules of thumb can
- 4:49Speaker 4: apply to your life. If you have any questions about
- 4:50Speaker 4: those things, or if you're wondering, like maybe you need
- 4:53Speaker 4: to customize a rule of thumb for your life, John
- 4:55Speaker 4: can help you out with that. Again, you can call
- 4:57Speaker 4: us three zero four three four five fifty eight fifty
- 4:58Speaker 4: eight three zero four three four five fifty eight fifty.
- 5:01Speaker 4: We can look back into the market for last week.
- 5:03Speaker 4: Relatively speaking, there was some some positive news last week,
- 5:06Speaker 4: but really positive movement.
- 5:07Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, another pretty strong recovery week. The Dow is
- 5:11Speaker 5: up two and a half percent, the SMP four point six,
- 5:14Speaker 5: the Nasdaq bounce back pretty good at six point seven percent,
- 5:19Speaker 5: and the international stocks were up again two point six.
- 5:23Speaker 5: International is by far leading the way this year, up
- 5:26Speaker 5: eight point four percent for the International Index.
- 5:29Speaker 4: If somebody's paying attention, this is a really or maybe
- 5:32Speaker 4: not unique, but this is a really good point where
- 5:34Speaker 4: you could look and see where the underpinning finances and
- 5:37Speaker 4: the sentiments are are divergent. You know, the sentiments are
- 5:41Speaker 4: still not a lot of that great, but the underlying
- 5:43Speaker 4: finances are you know, like you have talked about forever tariffs,
- 5:47Speaker 4: no tariffs, whatever else. Companies that are that are producing
- 5:50Speaker 4: and are doing what they're supposed to do, find ways through,
- 5:53Speaker 4: find ways through.
- 5:53Speaker 5: Yeah, absolutely, and there are gonna be a lot of
- 5:55Speaker 5: earnings this week. We'll start learning a little bit more,
- 5:58Speaker 5: not just about the earnings. You know, earnings are backwards
- 6:01Speaker 5: looking what's going to be important or what the companies
- 6:03Speaker 5: are saying in their earnings reports about their expectations for
- 6:07Speaker 5: the future, and that will that will kind of set
- 6:09Speaker 5: the tone. I'm sure we'll see some of that this week.
- 6:13Speaker 5: You know, with the market now rebounding, we've we've about
- 6:17Speaker 5: recovered half of the losses that that we had in
- 6:21Speaker 5: the in the original swoon. And if you think back,
- 6:25Speaker 5: you know when those losses were at the peak, that's
- 6:28Speaker 5: when anxiety was the highest. That's when everybody thought the.
- 6:32Speaker 3: The market was over exactly.
- 6:35Speaker 5: And and it turns out that that was the exact bottom.
- 6:42Speaker 5: That was when when things turned and now we've bounced
- 6:45Speaker 5: back about halfway back, and that's the this illustrates I
- 6:49Speaker 5: think perfectly the risk of trying to time the market,
- 6:53Speaker 5: because if you had given end to that anxiety and
- 6:56Speaker 5: fear and sold, now you've lost half of the rebound,
- 7:01Speaker 5: so you would have locked the loss in, lost half
- 7:04Speaker 5: of the rebound, and now you're left with the decision
- 7:06Speaker 5: what do I do. Now Do I get back in
- 7:10Speaker 5: and except that I lost half the rebound, or do
- 7:12Speaker 5: you think, no, the worst isn't in yet and we
- 7:14Speaker 5: wait it out and risk that the market goes higher.
- 7:18Speaker 5: It's just a game that is hard to win when
- 7:21Speaker 5: you're trying to tom the market.
- 7:24Speaker 4: It seems like and I mean, you give this advice
- 7:27Speaker 4: on the show and half for years, but it just
- 7:28Speaker 4: keeps from showing the proof is in the pudding. I
- 7:32Speaker 4: mean every single time that we talk about these sort
- 7:34Speaker 4: of things. On the other side, I kind of like
- 7:36Speaker 4: the space that we're in right now to some degree
- 7:38Speaker 4: because as far as the sentiments and the people like
- 7:42Speaker 4: using the sentiments for their own political cudgel and stuff
- 7:45Speaker 4: like that, we're sort of in a pattern right now
- 7:47Speaker 4: where nobody can claim, like, you know, the economy is
- 7:50Speaker 4: not crashing, the market's not crashing, but also things aren't
- 7:53Speaker 4: necessarily going, you know, skyrocketing. Nobody can really claim any
- 7:56Speaker 4: sort of and it's too early anyway, But people like
- 7:59Speaker 4: to take a quick vicar relapse or quick defeats if
- 8:01Speaker 4: they're trying to paint their other, their opponent in a
- 8:03Speaker 4: certain way. It's kind of hard to do that either
- 8:04Speaker 4: way right now. You know, people can just make their
- 8:06Speaker 4: own minds up.
- 8:07Speaker 5: Well, that's true. And and also you know, we really
- 8:10Speaker 5: don't know what the policies are going to be at
- 8:12Speaker 5: to set the decision making on. So you know, you
- 8:15Speaker 5: can give into the fear of it, and and and
- 8:18Speaker 5: and bail out. But like you say, you risk the
- 8:24Speaker 5: opposite of that when if if the anxiety is the highest,
- 8:28Speaker 5: if it feels like the right thing to do, then
- 8:31Speaker 5: it's probably the wrong thing to do when you're dealing
- 8:34Speaker 5: with the market. And that that's what makes it so difficult,
- 8:38Speaker 5: and and that's why a long term strategy that matches
- 8:42Speaker 5: to your life goals is the more prudent way to
- 8:46Speaker 5: manage your money and manage your finances and and not
- 8:50Speaker 5: not tie it to the news cycle, but tie it
- 8:52Speaker 5: to your personal news cycle, your personal events that you're
- 8:56Speaker 5: you're planning for.
- 8:57Speaker 3: I got a text that was over the weekend.
- 8:59Speaker 4: And I have no idea if this was meant for
- 9:01Speaker 4: our show or for another one of the shows that
- 9:03Speaker 4: are going to come on the network. It could work
- 9:04Speaker 4: for just about any of them. But there is a
- 9:06Speaker 4: context here where it could work for you as well.
- 9:09Speaker 4: And this person was sharing some data about I guess
- 9:15Speaker 4: shipping in the United States where I guess the role
- 9:18Speaker 4: call for shipping starting this week and then the futures
- 9:22Speaker 4: for May and June are virtually nothing. Container ships, nothing
- 9:26Speaker 4: on them. Nothing's coming into a lot of the ports
- 9:29Speaker 4: where you're used to seeing this stuff. And that has
- 9:30Speaker 4: to do with like tariffs, China, different things along those lines. Again,
- 9:34Speaker 4: that's something that if you're I'll let you comment on this.
- 9:37Speaker 4: But it seems like that something that's in the headlines.
- 9:39Speaker 4: We don't really know how to apply that yet. I mean,
- 9:41Speaker 4: you don't want to jump to conclusions on it. I
- 9:43Speaker 4: mean it sounds bad, you know. You see, you know,
- 9:45Speaker 4: the the articles that you see from the trades, and
- 9:47Speaker 4: these aren't from from like you know, news outlets, but
- 9:51Speaker 4: from like from the trades. When it comes to like
- 9:53Speaker 4: shipping and things like that, they're concerned, you know, right,
- 9:56Speaker 4: you know, they're concerned. It's not like up literal, They're like,
- 9:58Speaker 4: there's nothing come being in. Shells are going to be empty.
- 10:02Speaker 4: You gotta be careful when you start reading about stuff
- 10:04Speaker 4: like that.
- 10:05Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, obviously, you know, you and I can't
- 10:09Speaker 5: go poke around the shipyard and see what's going on there,
- 10:13Speaker 5: so so you almost have to trust some of the
- 10:15Speaker 5: news coming out and really look at the sources. But
- 10:18Speaker 5: I think that it is reasonable to assume that the
- 10:21Speaker 5: volume of shipments, particularly from China, are.
- 10:24Speaker 3: Going to be much. Do you think so?
- 10:26Speaker 2: Definitely.
- 10:27Speaker 5: You know, you start to see articles out of China
- 10:29Speaker 5: as well, people talking about China and the job losses
- 10:34Speaker 5: and the factories closing down and that sort of thing.
- 10:37Speaker 5: So you know, I think they're having quite a time
- 10:41Speaker 5: trying to figure out how to deal with this as well.
- 10:44Speaker 4: And keep in mind is two countries very tightly trying
- 10:47Speaker 4: to control the narrative. Yeah, So I mean, don't you
- 10:50Speaker 4: know you got to just do what's good for you,
- 10:51Speaker 4: don't worry about those types of things. Yeah, this is
- 10:53Speaker 4: pretty high level, it is.
- 10:55Speaker 5: I mean, I think the reality is if depending on
- 10:58Speaker 5: how far it gets pushed, I think the United States
- 11:01Speaker 5: probably has the upper hand in this, in this deal
- 11:06Speaker 5: a little more of the power. That doesn't mean it
- 11:09Speaker 5: won't will happen without some pain over here. But but
- 11:16Speaker 5: you know they have they have factories, and they have
- 11:19Speaker 5: debt loads, and and if they're not producing and profitably producing,
- 11:25Speaker 5: you know they're going to have some trouble.
- 11:26Speaker 3: Well, they don't have us as rowdy as a population.
- 11:30Speaker 3: Well probably for a reason.
- 11:32Speaker 4: Well, I'm just saying that that when when we talk
- 11:35Speaker 4: about when we talk about leverage in those cases, you
- 11:38Speaker 4: got to consider the leverage that the people of this
- 11:40Speaker 4: country exert that the people of that country do not exert.
- 11:43Speaker 5: Absolutely that that is true.
- 11:45Speaker 4: Which is why we love the country. I mean, right,
- 11:47Speaker 4: that's exactly why we love our country. There's no doubt
- 11:50Speaker 4: about that.
- 11:51Speaker 5: You know, we'll see how that that all plays out.
- 11:53Speaker 5: But those are things that are are to be revealed.
- 11:57Speaker 5: I mean, those are not things that you can make
- 11:59Speaker 5: a plan aund and.
- 12:00Speaker 3: They should be the main characters of any decision that
- 12:02Speaker 3: you're making right now.
- 12:03Speaker 5: No, the main character of your decision should be, Hey,
- 12:07Speaker 5: what are my goals? When am I going to retire?
- 12:09Speaker 5: When am I going to need this money? And and
- 12:12Speaker 5: let's structure it around that and that has nothing to
- 12:14Speaker 5: do I guarantee you that ten years from now I
- 12:18Speaker 5: shouldn't use the word guarantee. That's that's a no no
- 12:20Speaker 5: in this business. But but ten years from now we're
- 12:23Speaker 5: probably going to be talking about another topic.
- 12:27Speaker 4: Yeah right, yeah, that's probably true. Another text that came in,
- 12:30Speaker 4: By the way, you are welcome to texting. You can
- 12:31Speaker 4: call as well. Phone numbers threes are four, three, four, five,
- 12:33Speaker 4: fifty to fifty eight. Text line is threes are four
- 12:35Speaker 4: non three, five, five zeros or eight. But was this
- 12:38Speaker 4: the true this is from the seven to six zero
- 12:40Speaker 4: nine hundred. Was this the true bottom of the market
- 12:42Speaker 4: or it could be the bottom until the president makes
- 12:44Speaker 4: another announcement. That's what you mean is you don't really know.
- 12:47Speaker 3: I don't really know.
- 12:48Speaker 5: You have no idea you know the bottom of the market.
- 12:52Speaker 5: I mean just the process of a market bottom mean
- 12:55Speaker 5: typically you know, it's not in a day event. It's
- 12:58Speaker 5: a process. It's it's feeling its way out. You know,
- 13:02Speaker 5: it hit the bottom. The fear was the greatest. It
- 13:04Speaker 5: rallies up quite often, it will it will go back
- 13:09Speaker 5: down a little bit and try to test and make
- 13:11Speaker 5: sure that the bottom holds and before it bounces back,
- 13:15Speaker 5: you know how. That's how it works most of the time. However,
- 13:19Speaker 5: there are many times where we go and we hit
- 13:21Speaker 5: a bottom and then we're off to the races again
- 13:25Speaker 5: to the upside. I don't know how this is going
- 13:28Speaker 5: to play out. I will say that that in most
- 13:34Speaker 5: areas of the economy, the economy is not terrible still.
- 13:38Speaker 5: You know, companies are still earning money and there's still
- 13:41Speaker 5: some growth prospects out there. I think that's why these
- 13:46Speaker 5: earnings coming out, we are going to be interesting to
- 13:48Speaker 5: hear the narratives that the companies are giving. But you know,
- 13:53Speaker 5: in most cases when we have a big bear market,
- 13:57Speaker 5: there are some real economic shoes that have to be
- 14:01Speaker 5: worked through. And right now these are certainly policy changes,
- 14:06Speaker 5: but they're they're largely narrative, a news story until it
- 14:10Speaker 5: all shakes out. You know, who knows how it was
- 14:13Speaker 5: fundamentally The economy was fine before all this. So, I mean,
- 14:16Speaker 5: we had Amy Smith.
- 14:17Speaker 4: When in the Hotline earlier last week and somebody asked
- 14:21Speaker 4: her the question, if the pressures go away, does that
- 14:23Speaker 4: mean the economy basically just snaps back?
- 14:26Speaker 3: And she was like, probably, yeah, you.
- 14:28Speaker 4: Know, I mean, yeah, you know, there was nothing wrong
- 14:31Speaker 4: with the economy underneath, underneath everything. If the pressures go away,
- 14:34Speaker 4: it just comes back there.
- 14:36Speaker 3: There's the market.
- 14:37Speaker 5: Know, no big imbalance in any of the most of
- 14:40Speaker 5: the economic numbers out there that would say, hey, we're
- 14:44Speaker 5: ready for a big time recession.
- 14:47Speaker 3: Right, Yeah, that's what.
- 14:48Speaker 4: There's no other indicators that would suggest that other than
- 14:50Speaker 4: the ones that are being kind of implemented. You know,
- 14:52Speaker 4: if those go away, then that goes away.
- 14:54Speaker 5: Right right, and and you know, these policies will will
- 14:59Speaker 5: you know, I have a feeling that we're going to
- 15:01Speaker 5: get some some you know, long term repercussions from some
- 15:06Speaker 5: of these policies. I mean, I mean, we are a
- 15:09Speaker 5: big consumer of particularly Chinese goods, who seems to be
- 15:13Speaker 5: the the target I think probably for good reason. We'll
- 15:19Speaker 5: see how it plays out with the rest of the world.
- 15:21Speaker 5: You know, if if are there going to be these negotiations,
- 15:26Speaker 5: are there going to be these deals, you know, you
- 15:28Speaker 5: may have China out there as the as the the
- 15:33Speaker 5: tariff situation that persists, and maybe you have you know
- 15:36Speaker 5: a series of of of good news stories of from
- 15:39Speaker 5: the rest of the world. I mean, we we just
- 15:41Speaker 5: don't know how it's going to play out, but it
- 15:46Speaker 5: will play out, and one day you'll need to retire
- 15:49Speaker 5: right and you got to figure out how to get there.
- 15:52Speaker 4: And a lot of this stuff is just going to
- 15:54Speaker 4: be I mean, there might be places in the history
- 15:56Speaker 4: book for it. There might be you know, things that
- 15:58Speaker 4: people learning down the line from an economic standpoint or whatever,
- 16:01Speaker 4: But the bottom line is, as far as it goes,
- 16:03Speaker 4: those are history considerations, those are considerations for policies, different
- 16:06Speaker 4: things like that. All of those are important to some degree.
- 16:09Speaker 4: But the thing that we talk about here is your
- 16:10Speaker 4: retirement and how you can use all of these different
- 16:13Speaker 4: things and the tools in order to help yourself retire right.
- 16:15Speaker 4: And the kind of the bottom line is is even
- 16:19Speaker 4: with all the other stuff that's going on, the unrest
- 16:21Speaker 4: and uncertainty from Tom to Tom, things that are being renegotiated,
- 16:25Speaker 4: the opportunity for you to go upward and onward is
- 16:28Speaker 4: always going to be there, and you just have to
- 16:30Speaker 4: manage yourself correctly. Which is why we have John on
- 16:32Speaker 4: here every week because what John gives you as an
- 16:34Speaker 4: accessible path on how you can retire right, make smart
- 16:38Speaker 4: investments into your financial future so that you're not left
- 16:41Speaker 4: with a big gaping mall of uncertainty underneath you with
- 16:45Speaker 4: when you're five years away from pulling the pin for retirement.
- 16:48Speaker 5: Right right, Your outcome, the ability for you to achieve
- 16:51Speaker 5: your goals, is largely controlled by your actions, not what
- 16:56Speaker 5: goes on externally. You know, if you are living below
- 17:00Speaker 5: your means, saving and investing consistently, how are you not
- 17:05Speaker 5: going to be better off than if you weren't doing that.
- 17:09Speaker 5: You know, even if you don't get exactly to where
- 17:11Speaker 5: you want to be, fully, you're moving towards that goal
- 17:14Speaker 5: for sure by the actions you're taking, regardless of what
- 17:17Speaker 5: the market does. And there's there's really nothing else that
- 17:22Speaker 5: you that you have to know other than Okay, I
- 17:26Speaker 5: live in my world and I control a lot of.
- 17:30Speaker 3: Things in that.
- 17:31Speaker 5: Do you exert that control or do you allow a
- 17:34Speaker 5: news story to take over that control? Do you want
- 17:39Speaker 5: somebody else impacting you that way? Will choose not to
- 17:43Speaker 5: choose to control your situation, because that's you know, I've
- 17:47Speaker 5: done this for twenty some odd years. People that come
- 17:51Speaker 5: across my desk and I talk to you that are
- 17:54Speaker 5: successful half the time, you know, they don't even they
- 17:58Speaker 5: didn't even know what their account was doing.
- 18:01Speaker 3: Right, Yeah, those years.
- 18:03Speaker 5: But they knew they were saving, they knew they were
- 18:06Speaker 5: paying off their debts. You know, they knew that they
- 18:09Speaker 5: were living within their means, and they ended up getting
- 18:13Speaker 5: to places that a lot of times they were shocked
- 18:17Speaker 5: at how well they did at the end. And it
- 18:20Speaker 5: has you know, has nothing to do with the news.
- 18:23Speaker 4: Yeah, and it has everything to do with with things
- 18:25Speaker 4: are a lot more complicated, I mean, frankly, but things
- 18:28Speaker 4: that we know that work and things that if you
- 18:31Speaker 4: i mean literally just put one foot ahead of the
- 18:32Speaker 4: other end you follow your plan generally, Seeing what was
- 18:34Speaker 4: the numbers we came up with last week, the people
- 18:36Speaker 4: that were that you found that people that were satisfied
- 18:40Speaker 4: their retirement was seventy five percent, three out of four
- 18:43Speaker 4: or something like that. I mean, those are the people
- 18:45Speaker 4: that just followed the process. You know, they didn't necessarily
- 18:48Speaker 4: time the market perfectly at some point when they're in
- 18:50Speaker 4: their forties and that set up their retirement or whatever.
- 18:53Speaker 4: They simply just followed the process. At the end of
- 18:55Speaker 4: the process, hey I'm ready to retire and everything's good.
- 18:58Speaker 4: That's where you want to be. You want to kind
- 18:59Speaker 4: of forget about it. You want to be like, hey,
- 19:01Speaker 4: I'm going to retire and you're talking to your advisor,
- 19:03Speaker 4: can I do it? And they're like, yeah, that's basically
- 19:05Speaker 4: the conversation you want.
- 19:06Speaker 5: And I promise you that that, you know, ten years
- 19:09Speaker 5: from now, we're not going to be talking about this.
- 19:12Speaker 5: We're going to be talking about some other big issue.
- 19:15Speaker 5: And that's the way it works.
- 19:17Speaker 3: You know.
- 19:18Speaker 5: Over the course that we've done the show the last
- 19:20Speaker 5: handful of years, look at all the different things that
- 19:22Speaker 5: have come up that were world ending if you followed
- 19:25Speaker 5: the headlines, you know, we've had COVID, We've had you know,
- 19:29Speaker 5: currency problems and debt problems.
- 19:32Speaker 3: Was terrible.
- 19:32Speaker 4: I mean, we're already passive that and we kind of
- 19:35Speaker 4: talk about it, you know, in the rear view mirror
- 19:37Speaker 4: a little bit, but that.
- 19:38Speaker 3: Was horrible, you know, I mean just absolutely terrible.
- 19:40Speaker 5: Before the show, we had the housing crisis, we had
- 19:42Speaker 5: all of these were huge news stories that consumed everyone's thoughts.
- 19:48Speaker 5: But look at what the market has done since then.
- 19:51Speaker 5: And do you allow those external events to basically rule
- 19:55Speaker 5: over you or do you take agency over it and
- 20:00Speaker 5: and tackle, you know, the issues that are in your
- 20:03Speaker 5: sphere of control.
- 20:04Speaker 4: The agency is the big part there, John Burdett is

- 23:18Speaker 4: Three zero four three four five fifty eight fifty eight.
- 23:20Speaker 4: Three zero four three four five fifty eight fifty eight.
- 23:22Speaker 4: We have a couple of texts that are coming in
- 23:24Speaker 4: the text line for we're in the new studio where
- 23:26Speaker 4: we can take phone calls, and now the text line
- 23:28Speaker 4: is getting fired. Let's say we have a text from
- 23:31Speaker 4: the seven six zero. It's a good point to mention
- 23:33Speaker 4: America's being unruly compared to the Chinese. The Chinese can
- 23:36Speaker 4: clamp down the way that we can't hear. Could that
- 23:39Speaker 4: give this is getting Could that give China more more leverage?
- 23:44Speaker 4: That's what we don't know. I mean, that's kind of
- 23:46Speaker 4: what I was indicating too, that that we worry about
- 23:49Speaker 4: our people here. The government does obstensibly worry about the
- 23:53Speaker 4: populace where other countries don't.
- 23:54Speaker 5: Necessarily, we generally are not going to run over our
- 23:57Speaker 5: citizens with tanks, So right, I think, you know, for
- 24:01Speaker 5: those that remember that, that's that's certainly, you know, certainly
- 24:07Speaker 5: something out there. But the reality is if people over
- 24:10Speaker 5: there are hungry and unable to pay their bills, I mean,
- 24:14Speaker 5: there will be some unrest. Potentially.
- 24:17Speaker 3: We'll see how it plays out.
- 24:18Speaker 5: I don't know, you know, and it's hard to tell
- 24:20Speaker 5: if this is even going to be a long term
- 24:23Speaker 5: thing or if there'll be some kind of of a
- 24:25Speaker 5: compromise somewhere. But I mean, there are certainly some issues
- 24:29Speaker 5: with Shaina that need to be worked out, in my opinion,
- 24:32Speaker 5: and you know, maybe this is what it takes to
- 24:35Speaker 5: create a catalyst for that action to happen.
- 24:37Speaker 4: Yeah, and kind of like I did the UH, the
- 24:40Speaker 4: intellectual theft and UH in China. If you don't understand
- 24:44Speaker 4: it xactly, and I'll include myself among that. You hear
- 24:47Speaker 4: about it in the abstract a lot and you're like,
- 24:48Speaker 4: oh man, that's terrible, but what exactly does it mean.
- 24:51Speaker 4: I've done some recent research into exactly what it means.
- 24:53Speaker 4: It's it is terrible, and it is obvious, and it
- 24:58Speaker 4: does cost innovators and people with the original ideas that
- 25:02Speaker 4: especially from the western part of the world, it costs
- 25:05Speaker 4: them money marketplace. I mean, it is an actual, very
- 25:10Speaker 4: huge issue.
- 25:10Speaker 5: And there are issues with you know, state backed companies.
- 25:15Speaker 5: They'll come in and and basically acquire other companies and
- 25:21Speaker 5: other countries and then strangle them out and you know,
- 25:25Speaker 5: close those factories down to basically stranglehold certain industries and
- 25:32Speaker 5: that is not fair competition or fair trade, right, So
- 25:36Speaker 5: there are definitely issues. I don't know if this is
- 25:39Speaker 5: you know, it's above my pay grade to know if
- 25:41Speaker 5: what we're doing right now is the right way to
- 25:43Speaker 5: solve those issues. But they're certainly being talked about now,
- 25:48Speaker 5: so we'll see what happens.
- 25:49Speaker 4: When we talk about some of the rules of spending
- 25:52Speaker 4: and savings and some of the things that are out there.
- 25:54Speaker 4: We talk about these things all the time. Sometimes there's
- 25:57Speaker 4: expressions going into times of year, you know, that that
- 26:00Speaker 4: sort of rules of thumbs that people learn to live by.
- 26:03Speaker 4: But there's a lot of things in the financial industry
- 26:05Speaker 4: that are kind of not rules, but sort of ideas
- 26:10Speaker 4: that have been around for a long time that generally
- 26:12Speaker 4: under general situations work a lot, and there's a lot
- 26:16Speaker 4: of different ratios and scenarios and things along those lines.
- 26:19Speaker 4: But what's the most probably the most common ones that
- 26:21Speaker 4: you run across and the ones that you find that
- 26:24Speaker 4: you get the most discussion out of.
- 26:27Speaker 5: Well, I'd say the number one is, am I on
- 26:30Speaker 5: track for retirement?
- 26:32Speaker 3: You know?
- 26:32Speaker 5: And there are lots of rules with them, lots of
- 26:34Speaker 5: benchmarks there that people use for that. There's the twenty
- 26:40Speaker 5: five times rule. You know, what is your income. Multiply
- 26:43Speaker 5: of that by twenty five. That's how much money you
- 26:46Speaker 5: have you should have for retirement. You know, that tells
- 26:49Speaker 5: if you're on track. There's the age base savings rule.
- 26:54Speaker 5: That's another way to determine if you're on track. If
- 26:57Speaker 5: you're thirty years old, you need about one time's your
- 26:59Speaker 5: salary saved for retirement. If you're forty you need three times,
- 27:03Speaker 5: if you're fifty you need six times, if you're sixty
- 27:06Speaker 5: you need eight times, and by retirement you need ten times.
- 27:10Speaker 5: So that kind of gives you an idea, you know,
- 27:12Speaker 5: I am my own track or not. Now, these are
- 27:14Speaker 5: rules of thumb. Everybody's situation is different, but you know,
- 27:18Speaker 5: this kind of a barometer that you can look at
- 27:20Speaker 5: and say, hey, I'm generally okay, or or oh, I
- 27:23Speaker 5: really need to get to work on this.
- 27:26Speaker 4: And a lot of these help you when you're looking
- 27:29Speaker 4: for a place to start. I ran into a lot
- 27:30Speaker 4: of this when I was looking at trying to find
- 27:33Speaker 4: ways to lose weight or whatever.
- 27:35Speaker 3: You can.
- 27:35Speaker 4: You can find a formula that works for you or
- 27:39Speaker 4: something that that whatever reason matches up with your with
- 27:42Speaker 4: with your mind more. I mean, some of these, depending
- 27:45Speaker 4: on how you access it, might mean the same things
- 27:47Speaker 4: in the long run, but you just come about it
- 27:49Speaker 4: from a different way. The fifty thirty twenty rule, for example,
- 27:51Speaker 4: is one of the things one here, which is simply
- 27:53Speaker 4: that you you spend fifty percent on your needs that's
- 27:56Speaker 4: your like your moregegs or whatever it is, that you
- 27:58Speaker 4: have thirty percent on your once and you save twe
- 28:00Speaker 4: From an abstract standpoint, that seems pretty fair, right, I mean,
- 28:03Speaker 4: that's thirty percent on your once.
- 28:04Speaker 3: That's a lot. Yeah. Yeah.
- 28:06Speaker 5: And and there again, these are not ratios that necessarily
- 28:10Speaker 5: are in you know, cement that you can't move. These
- 28:15Speaker 5: are benchmarks. You know, somebody might not have a mortgage,
- 28:19Speaker 5: for instance, so they're probably not going to spend as
- 28:21Speaker 5: much on their on their needs, so they may can
- 28:24Speaker 5: spend more on their wants and their savings. So it's
- 28:27Speaker 5: it's not set in stone, but they're just good rules
- 28:31Speaker 5: of thumb to think, Okay, if I'm if I'm trying
- 28:33Speaker 5: to gauge whether I'm on the right track or not,
- 28:36Speaker 5: these can be helpful in doing that. But it's certainly
- 28:39Speaker 5: not a rule that as an individual, you know, might
- 28:43Speaker 5: might be specifically for you. It's just it's just godposts
- 28:46Speaker 5: that we're using, and.
- 28:48Speaker 4: It helps you think about things from a certain standpoint
- 28:50Speaker 4: that makes you a little bit more cognizant of what's
- 28:52Speaker 4: going on. I really like the thought. You know, we
- 28:55Speaker 4: talk about emergency funds a lot, and I'm somebody that
- 28:57Speaker 4: I've gone through, so I've taken the ticket. As far
- 29:01Speaker 4: as income goes, I've made over six figures before when
- 29:04Speaker 4: I was in my twenties, I've struggled to put together
- 29:06Speaker 4: soup for maldy to make a meal. I mean, I've
- 29:08Speaker 4: been a as a as a single person, I've lived
- 29:11Speaker 4: at all up and down. But the one thing that
- 29:14Speaker 4: is consistent among that is that if you live within
- 29:18Speaker 4: your means, and that's the important thing that you have
- 29:20Speaker 4: to do. There you find a way to live within
- 29:22Speaker 4: your means. Regardless of where your situation is. You could
- 29:25Speaker 4: fluctuate through the course of your life. Twenty percent of
- 29:27Speaker 4: your income when you're thirty might be different than what
- 29:30Speaker 4: it is when you were fifty. But if you consistently
- 29:32Speaker 4: put those things away and you live by that discipline,
- 29:34Speaker 4: you're going to get to the right end by the
- 29:35Speaker 4: time it's over with.
- 29:37Speaker 3: Oh, no doubt about it.
- 29:38Speaker 5: I mean, you know, the it's not how much money
- 29:40Speaker 5: you make, it's what you do with the money that
- 29:42Speaker 5: you make. And there again talking about agency, that puts
- 29:46Speaker 5: that that control in your hands. You know, you control
- 29:49Speaker 5: how much money you spend. You control how much money
- 29:52Speaker 5: you save. And you know largely if you if you
- 29:57Speaker 5: set that up and you follow that plan, you're going
- 29:59Speaker 5: to get to where you need to be almost without
- 30:02Speaker 5: fail Like you say, just practically speaking, looking at history,
- 30:08Speaker 5: you know, if you're creating fifteen twenty percent savings out
- 30:12Speaker 5: of your earnings, I don't care what the market does,
- 30:16Speaker 5: you're going to have more savings and investment than most people.
- 30:18Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 30:19Speaker 4: And the way that these things layer on top of
- 30:20Speaker 4: each other. I mentioned I mentioned the emergency fund a
- 30:23Speaker 4: moment ago. The reason you have an emergency fund is
- 30:25Speaker 4: because it protects the rest of your assets. Like I said,
- 30:28Speaker 4: I've been in both of those situations before. I've been
- 30:30Speaker 4: in a situation where I've had to borrow against assets
- 30:32Speaker 4: to pay off a situation that came up out of
- 30:34Speaker 4: nowhere where I didn't have the money to pay it off.
- 30:36Speaker 4: The only thing I could do was borrow against my assets,
- 30:38Speaker 4: and it was a paid frankly, a pain in the
- 30:41Speaker 4: rear to pay it back and to get it taken
- 30:42Speaker 4: care of and everything else. I've also been in the
- 30:44Speaker 4: situation where something came up a couple thousand dollars that
- 30:48Speaker 4: in another time in my life it would have been
- 30:50Speaker 4: I would have had to borrow figure out a way
- 30:51Speaker 4: to do it, but I had the emergency fund. I
- 30:53Speaker 4: was able to tap into that cash. And brother, let
- 30:55Speaker 4: me tell you, it is so much easier when you
- 30:57Speaker 4: have that money set aside and you don't have to
- 30:58Speaker 4: stress about it. You're like, well, it's a shame, tam
- 31:00Speaker 4: that I have to take this out of my emergency fund.
- 31:02Speaker 4: But at least I had it in my emergency fund,
- 31:03Speaker 4: and then you can work at building.
- 31:04Speaker 5: It back and you realize it's like you're paying it forward. Yeah, absolutely,
- 31:09Speaker 5: because it's not in life. Will emergencies happen? We know
- 31:13Speaker 5: they will, yes, and so it shouldn't be really an
- 31:17Speaker 5: unexpected emergency that the nature of the emergency might be unexpected.
- 31:21Speaker 5: You don't know what's going to be what it's going
- 31:23Speaker 5: to be, but you certainly know that life will throw
- 31:26Speaker 5: some curveballs at you that will take some money to solve,
- 31:30Speaker 5: and so lack of planning there is a big issue.
- 31:34Speaker 5: That's that's what gets a lot of folks into consumer debt,
- 31:38Speaker 5: into debt to begin with trying to get out of
- 31:41Speaker 5: those emergencies, and then they're stuck paying that interest, which
- 31:44Speaker 5: then evaporates your ability to create savings and investment because
- 31:50Speaker 5: now you're paying interest, you're not paying it to yourself
- 31:53Speaker 5: an interest compounding over time is the most powerful tool
- 31:59Speaker 5: you have into saving for retirement. That's one of the
- 32:02Speaker 5: rules of thumb. One here the rule of seventy two.
- 32:05Speaker 5: You know, if you want to know how a lot
- 32:08Speaker 5: of Fountain folks are like, oh, you know, I'm not
- 32:10Speaker 5: getting anywhere with my compounding. Well, the rule of seventy
- 32:14Speaker 5: two will tell you how long it takes for your
- 32:16Speaker 5: money to double. And so you take the rate of
- 32:19Speaker 5: return and divide it into seventy two and that roughly
- 32:22Speaker 5: tells you how many years it takes to double. So
- 32:24Speaker 5: if you get a ten percent return, roughly seven point
- 32:27Speaker 5: two years, you will double your money. That means in
- 32:31Speaker 5: fourteen years it will double again, so now you four
- 32:35Speaker 5: times your money. You see, it compounds and it escalates.
- 32:39Speaker 5: That's why when you look at financial charts they look
- 32:41Speaker 5: like hockey sticks because they grow exponentially over time. And
- 32:47Speaker 5: the faster you compound, the faster you get to that
- 32:50Speaker 5: that you know, steep up slope on the charts, And
- 32:54Speaker 5: that's what you're trying to do. When you're saving. It's
- 32:57Speaker 5: first it feels like you're not getting anywhere because you're
- 32:59Speaker 5: doing all the work yourself, you're creating the savings. But
- 33:03Speaker 5: eventually the growth of the investment outstrips your ability to
- 33:09Speaker 5: even even save as much. You know, that's where you
- 33:12Speaker 5: get to the point where it's almost inevitable that you
- 33:16Speaker 5: find financial success.
- 33:18Speaker 4: The one time in school that I took I actually
- 33:20Speaker 4: took a like a There was an elective math class
- 33:24Speaker 4: in high school. When I went to high school, that
- 33:25Speaker 4: was that was for like life math or something, I
- 33:27Speaker 4: can't remember. It was considered sort of a like an
- 33:29Speaker 4: athlete's class or or whatever. Right, it wasn't supposed to
- 33:31Speaker 4: be all that hard, but it was actually extraordinarily informative.
- 33:35Speaker 4: Like I took a lot away from that. And one
- 33:36Speaker 4: of the exercises that you did there was the penny
- 33:39Speaker 4: exercise with compounding interest. You know, it blows you away
- 33:42Speaker 4: when you're like, you start with the cent, you double
- 33:43Speaker 4: the cent, you have two cents, then you have four,
- 33:45Speaker 4: then you have eight, then you have sixteen thirty. Pretty soon,
- 33:47Speaker 4: like once you get from from thirty two to sixty
- 33:49Speaker 4: four and then you're doubling sixty four, you're like, wait,
- 33:51Speaker 4: we're already up into a dollar. Then we're into two,
- 33:53Speaker 4: then we're into four dollars, then we're into this eight.
- 33:54Speaker 4: I mean, it goes in no time, you know, And
- 33:57Speaker 4: if you.
- 33:57Speaker 5: Follow that out, I believe it's like five point three
- 34:01Speaker 5: or four million dollars in thirty days from a penny doubling,
- 34:06Speaker 5: and you know, then thirty one days it's ten million.
- 34:09Speaker 5: You know, it just becomes absurd. The math becomes absurd
- 34:12Speaker 5: at some point, and of course your investments aren't going
- 34:15Speaker 5: to double every day, no exercise, but it shows you
- 34:18Speaker 5: the power of that compounding interest, and that's working for
- 34:22Speaker 5: you when you're saving, and when you're having consumer debt,
- 34:26Speaker 5: when you're having credit card debt, that compounding interest is
- 34:30Speaker 5: working against you. And which way would you rather have
- 34:34Speaker 5: it working? You'd rather have it working in your favor.
- 34:39Speaker 5: So that is your most powerful tool. You've got to
- 34:42Speaker 5: harness that. And that's also why it makes sense. The
- 34:46Speaker 5: younger you are, the more you can do, the quicker
- 34:49Speaker 5: you can get yourself in your financial life and order,
- 34:52Speaker 5: the more success you're going to have, and the easier
- 34:54Speaker 5: it's going to be.
- 34:56Speaker 4: It doesn't even have to be large substantial amounts to
- 34:59Speaker 4: start with.
- 34:59Speaker 3: You know you can.
- 35:00Speaker 4: You can create your retirement based off of just what
- 35:03Speaker 4: you have that's going on. You just have to start
- 35:05Speaker 4: at some point and to work forward on it. And
- 35:08Speaker 4: if you do that, then you are going to find
- 35:09Speaker 4: the way where you can retire right. You can find

- 36:20Speaker 4: four non nine three just talks about how they wanted
- 36:23Speaker 4: to equate the national economy with how somebody should run
- 36:27Speaker 4: their own economy. You know, we're spending too much and
- 36:29Speaker 4: not saving enough, so of course we're going broke as
- 36:31Speaker 4: a nation, which isn't a bad analogy. But what this
- 36:34Speaker 4: person also says is they get up every Monday morning
