- 0:00Speaker 1: Part one, Story seven of Tales of King Arthur and
- 0:03Speaker 1: the Round Table by Andrew Lang. This LibriVox recording is
- 0:07Speaker 1: in the public domain. Part one, story seven, the Passing
- 0:11Speaker 1: of Merlin. Many of King Arthur's knights set out on
- 0:16Speaker 1: journeys in search of adventure, and one of them, Sir Pellinore,
- 0:20Speaker 1: brought a damsel of the lake to Arthur's court, and
- 0:24Speaker 1: when Merlin saw her, he fell in love with her,
- 0:27Speaker 1: so that he desired to be always in her company.
- 0:30Speaker 1: The damsel laughed in secret at Merlin, but made use
- 0:33Speaker 1: of him to tell her all she would know, and
- 0:36Speaker 1: the wizard had no strength to say her nay, though
- 0:39Speaker 1: he knew what would come of it, for he told
- 0:42Speaker 1: King Arthur that before long he should be put into
- 0:45Speaker 1: the earth alive. For all his cunning. He likewise told
- 0:49Speaker 1: the King many things that should befall him, and warned
- 0:53Speaker 1: him always to keep the scabbard as well as the
- 0:56Speaker 1: sword Excalibur, and foretold that both sword and scabbard should
- 1:01Speaker 1: be stolen from him by a woman whom he most trusted.
- 1:04Speaker 1: You will miss my counsel, sorely, added Merlin, and would
- 1:08Speaker 1: give all your lands to have me back again. But
- 1:12Speaker 1: since you know what will happen, said the king. You
- 1:14Speaker 1: may surely guard against it. No, answered Merlin, that will
- 1:19Speaker 1: not be. So he departed from the king, and the
- 1:22Speaker 1: maiden followed him, whom some call Nimuay and others Vivian.
- 1:27Speaker 1: And wherever she went, Merlin went also. They journeyed together
- 1:32Speaker 1: to many places, both at home and across the seas,
- 1:35Speaker 1: and the damsel was wearied of him and sought by
- 1:38Speaker 1: every means to be rid of him, but he would
- 1:41Speaker 1: not be shaken off. At last, these two wandered back
- 1:45Speaker 1: to Cornwall, and one day Merlin showed Vivian a rock
- 1:49Speaker 1: under which he said great marvels were hidden. Then Vivian
- 1:53Speaker 1: put forth all her powers and told Merlin how she
- 1:56Speaker 1: longed to see the wonders beneath the stone. And in
- 1:59Speaker 1: spite of all his wisdom, Merlin listened to her and
- 2:03Speaker 1: crept under the rock to bring forth the strange things
- 2:06Speaker 1: that lay there. And when he was under the stone,
- 2:09Speaker 1: she used the magic he had taught her, and the
- 2:12Speaker 1: rock rolled over him and buried him alive, as he
- 2:15Speaker 1: had told King Arthur. But the damsel departed with joy
- 2:19Speaker 1: and thought no more of him, now that she knew
- 2:22Speaker 1: all the magic he could teach her. End of Part one,
- 2:27Speaker 1: Story seven,
