- 0:00Speaker 1: The free Arteart radio app as well as on the
- 0:01Speaker 1: podcast Cold does a good job of cutting it up,
- 0:04Speaker 1: so if you missed any of it, we're there as well,
- 0:06Speaker 1: so there's no excuse.
- 0:07Speaker 2: A lot to get into.
- 0:08Speaker 1: On this first day of July, we have Inconceivable this hour,
- 0:13Speaker 1: we also have NBA Free Agency. Did the Bucks accidentally
- 0:19Speaker 1: ruin their title shots by letting Damian Lillard walk away?
- 0:23Speaker 1: We'll talk to you about that a little bit later,
- 0:25Speaker 1: but first it is maybe the quote of the month,
- 0:29Speaker 1: and it's already the first of the month. It's Paul
- 0:31Speaker 1: Finebaum this morning on Get Up and Call. Let's hear
- 0:35Speaker 1: with mister Finebaum, the true authority of college football, the
- 0:39Speaker 1: true authority of the SEC, had to say about arch
- 0:42Speaker 1: Manning the absolute ruf.
- 0:45Speaker 3: I think there's a reasonably good chance at Arch Manning
- 0:47Speaker 3: will be sitting on the front row in New York
- 0:49Speaker 3: at the Heisman ceremony. That's assuming that his team does
- 0:53Speaker 3: what it's supposed to do and compete for not only
- 0:55Speaker 3: the SEC, but for the national championship, and I really
- 0:59Speaker 3: believe they will. I think Steve Sarkisian, who's one of
- 1:02Speaker 3: the most amazing play callers I've ever seen, made a
- 1:05Speaker 3: critical mistake late in the year. He was way too
- 1:08Speaker 3: loyal to quinn Ewers, who was banged up and was
- 1:11Speaker 3: really ineffective. Had arch Manning been instituted in the second
- 1:15Speaker 3: half of that game, like Nick Saban did a couple
- 1:18Speaker 3: of years ago, with a tongue of I loa, I
- 1:21Speaker 3: think there's a reasonably good chance that Texas would have
- 1:24Speaker 3: beaten Ohio State and won the national championship.
- 1:27Speaker 2: They're very capable of doing.
- 1:28Speaker 3: It again this year. I believe also that arch Manning
- 1:31Speaker 3: is the best college football quarterback we have seen since
- 1:34Speaker 3: Tim Tebow entered the scene in two thousand and six.
- 1:38Speaker 1: So let's start right there at the end, because there's
- 1:41Speaker 1: a lot to get into with Fine Bomb. Fine Bom
- 1:43Speaker 1: gave us plenty to talk about, but we'll start here.
- 1:47Speaker 1: Anytime you invoke the name of Timothy Tebow, you were
- 1:51Speaker 1: going to get the highest of high expectations. Now, do
- 1:55Speaker 1: I think Tim Tebow's the greatest college quarterback of all time?
- 1:58Speaker 2: Maybe?
- 1:59Speaker 1: I think there's a lot of guys who have had
- 2:00Speaker 1: better single seasons than Tebo. I think about Joe Burrow
- 2:04Speaker 1: with that LSU team, sixty touchdowns. It's hard to beat
- 2:07Speaker 1: that Johnny Manzel might have been a little bit more
- 2:09Speaker 1: electric at Texas A and M and his Heisman season.
- 2:12Speaker 1: But if you gave me somebody's career, if I could
- 2:15Speaker 1: go and scherry pick a career of college football, I'm
- 2:19Speaker 1: taking Tim Tebow. So when you compare him to Tebow,
- 2:23Speaker 1: when you compare arch Manning to Tebo, immediately the stakes
- 2:27Speaker 1: are raised. Yeah, Texas is coming into the twenty twenty
- 2:30Speaker 1: five twenty sixth season as a preemptive favorite to try
- 2:33Speaker 1: to win a national championship, something that Steve Sarkisian has
- 2:36Speaker 1: not yet been able to do at the University of Texas.
- 2:40Speaker 1: And the expectations are ginormous for this program because they
- 2:44Speaker 1: are the University of Texas. That's just how it goes
- 2:47Speaker 1: in the state, That's how it goes nationally. This is
- 2:50Speaker 1: the flagship, this is the brand. So I look at Finebaum,
- 2:54Speaker 1: who has been known every once in a while to
- 2:57Speaker 1: try to throw something in the spokes of some of
- 3:01Speaker 1: these national championship contending teams, and I almost hear this
- 3:04Speaker 1: as fodder, a little bit of the outside noise to
- 3:08Speaker 1: throw the long runs off their game, to throw Arch
- 3:09Speaker 1: Manning off this game, and to throw meat red meat.
- 3:12Speaker 1: I should say to those Internet trolls who are going
- 3:15Speaker 1: to love every misstep, every misfire from this team. Now,
- 3:20Speaker 1: I don't imagine that's going to happen a ton this year,
- 3:22Speaker 1: but I do think that there are going to be
- 3:24Speaker 1: times there. It's going to be games, there's going to
- 3:26Speaker 1: be quarters where arch Banning looks like a guy who's
- 3:30Speaker 1: playing his first full season under center. I don't think
- 3:33Speaker 1: that that's insane to say. I don't think that that's
- 3:35Speaker 1: incorrect to predict that there will be games, there will
- 3:39Speaker 1: be times, there will be situations where he's going to
- 3:42Speaker 1: look like a quarterback who's starting his first season of
- 3:44Speaker 1: college football. He was a good backup last year. He
- 3:48Speaker 1: has the most important name in football. He is from
- 3:52Speaker 1: a lineage that not just him. He has a name,
- 3:55Speaker 1: but he also has two Hall of Fame quarterback uncles,
- 3:57Speaker 1: and he has a grandfather who was special in his
- 4:02Speaker 1: own right in Archie Manning. This is the name. This
- 4:05Speaker 1: is the first family of football in America. When you
- 4:09Speaker 1: have those expectations, when you have that last name, it
- 4:12Speaker 1: matters a little bit more, obviously, and you played for
- 4:14Speaker 1: the University of Texas. Somehow, the stakes are even higher.
- 4:17Speaker 1: So that was my first major takeaway is that to
- 4:20Speaker 1: compare him to Tebow. For Fine Bomb to come on
- 4:23Speaker 1: television on the first day of July where things are quiet,
- 4:27Speaker 1: it felt like he was just trying to make some noise,
- 4:29Speaker 1: try to put something out there to get some clicks.
- 4:32Speaker 2: And I don't love that.
- 4:33Speaker 1: I don't love that you're using the University of Texas
- 4:36Speaker 1: and Arch Manning to do that.
- 4:37Speaker 2: That would be my first thing. The second thing is.
- 4:40Speaker 1: That Fine Bomb is playing right into the internet conspiracy
- 4:44Speaker 1: theory that some of the we call them the Tinfoil
- 4:47Speaker 1: Hat Gang, have been putting out there for months, for
- 4:50Speaker 1: almost a year now, that Sarkesian should have moved off
- 4:54Speaker 1: of Quinn when Quinn had some of those injuries late
- 4:57Speaker 1: in the season, moved to Arch and give him the
- 4:59Speaker 1: key come playoff time. And we've heard it compared to
- 5:03Speaker 1: when Saban took the ball away from Jalen Hurts in
- 5:06Speaker 1: the National Championship at halftime, gave it to a tongue
- 5:09Speaker 1: of Aloa and they won the National Championship. But I
- 5:12Speaker 1: hate to break the news to you that those days
- 5:14Speaker 1: are the past. Those days you don't exist anymore. What
- 5:18Speaker 1: you are in now is a new era of college football.
- 5:21Speaker 1: We just saw thee Or Texas Totate University go to
- 5:23Speaker 1: the Pac twelve yesterday for a little bit more money. Okay,
- 5:27Speaker 1: we are in a situation now that is the closest
- 5:31Speaker 1: we are ever going to get to player empowerment in football.
- 5:34Speaker 2: Right.
- 5:34Speaker 1: College game has turned into semi pro game. You cannot
- 5:38Speaker 1: do that as a college football coach, and we're never
- 5:40Speaker 1: going to see a situation like Saban had in the
- 5:41Speaker 1: National Championship again. You have to ride with your starting quarterback.
- 5:45Speaker 1: That's just how it goes from here on out. Because
- 5:48Speaker 1: the sixteen fifteen year old quarterback who's coming up, who's
- 5:52Speaker 1: going to be the next quarterback of your favorite team?
- 5:55Speaker 1: They have that in their head that, hey, I remember
- 5:57Speaker 1: at halftime of a last game of the SEC schedule,
- 6:02Speaker 1: the slate that Sarkisian took the ball away from the
- 6:04Speaker 1: starter and gave it to me, gave it to the backup.
- 6:06Speaker 1: And then when you're the starter, your entire time, you're
- 6:09Speaker 1: looking over your shoulder worried that somebody's gonna take your job.
- 6:13Speaker 1: You can't have a successful football program doing that. We
- 6:16Speaker 1: said it then that Sarkisian was doing the right thing
- 6:19Speaker 1: by riding with Queen yours. If he can play, he
- 6:21Speaker 1: needs to play. But you also are in a spot
- 6:25Speaker 1: now where you're trying to recti act, retroactively change the past.
- 6:30Speaker 1: You're trying to retroactively move the goalposts and say, oh,
- 6:34Speaker 1: Art should have been playing. I'm gonna be honest with
- 6:36Speaker 1: you here, Okay, I think Sarkisian might be the smartest
- 6:40Speaker 1: college football coach in America. I'm gonna be honest with you.
- 6:43Speaker 1: I think he's one of the smartest college or football
- 6:45Speaker 1: coaches that we've had in the last twenty five years.
- 6:48Speaker 1: What he has been able to do at the University
- 6:50Speaker 1: of Texas is a statement towards that. So if he
- 6:52Speaker 1: says I'm gonna ride out with the guy who got
- 6:55Speaker 1: me here in Quinn, I'm gonna jump in the back
- 6:58Speaker 1: seat and say drive me there.
- 7:00Speaker 2: I'm on all on board with coach sark That's just me.
- 7:03Speaker 1: Now, maybe you are sitting there saying, oh, well, I
- 7:06Speaker 1: would have rather had arch Banning play. Well, that's easy
- 7:08Speaker 1: to play the results. It's easy to play the results
- 7:11Speaker 1: after not winning the national title, saying well, if.
- 7:13Speaker 2: He would, but we don't know that. You don't know
- 7:15Speaker 2: that I don't know that.
- 7:16Speaker 1: I think that they've made the right decision at the time,
- 7:19Speaker 1: and I think that fine bomb going on get up
- 7:22Speaker 1: on a random Tuesday morning in July. Saying that Sarkesian
- 7:26Speaker 1: made a misstep is very easy to play the results.
- 7:30Speaker 2: It's very easy to play the results of that.
- 7:33Speaker 1: There's not another college football coach in America, not Ryan Day,
- 7:37Speaker 1: not Davo Sweeney, Nobody would have taken the ball out
- 7:40Speaker 1: of Quinnever's hands because they know the world that they
- 7:42Speaker 1: live in today. They know the world that they live
- 7:44Speaker 1: in today. That is a player empowerment era. And then
- 7:47Speaker 1: if you are the type of guy who's going to
- 7:49Speaker 1: take the ball away from your starting quarterback and give
- 7:51Speaker 1: it to the backup, then no starting quarterback then can
- 7:54Speaker 1: trust you. Whether he's banged up, maybe he has a
- 7:57Speaker 1: couple bad interceptions, he's looking over his shoulder. You can't
- 8:01Speaker 1: also fin football games like that, Yeah, Cole, Well, hindsight's
- 8:05Speaker 1: twenty twenty, and so I think that would be gone
- 8:09Speaker 1: farther with Arch. We don't know that, we don't know
- 8:12Speaker 1: what would have happened. But also if we're winning with Quinn,
- 8:16Speaker 1: that's fine, And there's honestly, I liked the approach sark
- 8:19Speaker 1: is taking with Arch. Just pump the breaks, be patient
- 8:23Speaker 1: with him. He's going to be fine. He's not pushing
- 8:26Speaker 1: him down our throats or anything like that. Pump the breaks.
- 8:29Speaker 1: He's going to be fine. Let him develop. It takes time.
- 8:33Speaker 1: He's not forcing it.
- 8:34Speaker 4: And that's what I really appreciate about the whole sark situation,
- 8:37Speaker 4: in him developing Arch and coaching him the right way.
- 8:42Speaker 1: I will say that the outside noise that Longhorn fans
- 8:45Speaker 1: remember from five or eight or nine is now like
- 8:50Speaker 1: goes ten, fifteen levels higher because of social media, because
- 8:55Speaker 1: of the Internet, because of everything we have today. The
- 8:58Speaker 1: outside noise on this season is going to be unlike
- 9:01Speaker 1: any other season that Longhorn fans can remember because there's
- 9:05Speaker 1: legitimate title chances this year. Last year, first year in
- 9:08Speaker 1: the SEC, they exceeded a lot of people's expectations. You
- 9:11Speaker 1: come into year number two, you have a year of
- 9:14Speaker 1: SEC football under your belt. The outside noise this year
- 9:17Speaker 1: is going to be second to none in the history
- 9:20Speaker 1: of the Longhorns football program. How is Sarkisian going to
- 9:24Speaker 1: be able to make sure that that doesn't get in
- 9:26Speaker 1: the locker room? That will be the truest test I
- 9:29Speaker 1: think this season call. Yeah, I completely agree.
- 9:32Speaker 4: But also it doesn't matter if you're playing at Ohio
- 9:34Speaker 4: State or San Jose State. Every team is going to
- 9:37Speaker 4: give you their all because you just have a target
- 9:39Speaker 4: on your back coming into the season of oh well
- 9:42Speaker 4: we fell short the year before, but hey, you know
- 9:44Speaker 4: we got arch revamping. Everything you know is looking up
- 9:48Speaker 4: to win a national championship. But every team is going
- 9:52Speaker 4: to be gunning for you in every fan and every
- 9:55Speaker 4: media member is going to do what they can to
- 9:57Speaker 4: you know, get the clicks and get the and really
- 10:01Speaker 4: try and cause that outside noise. I think Starks doing
- 10:04Speaker 4: a great job as well as containing that as much
- 10:06Speaker 4: as he can. But Fine Bomb, I'm not. I agree,
- 10:10Speaker 4: but don't agree type of thing. It is slow season.
- 10:13Speaker 4: I understand it. It's a Tuesday, you know, Fine Bam
- 10:16Speaker 4: knows what he's talking about. So again, it's just cut
- 10:21Speaker 4: the outside noise, focus on what's in front of you,
- 10:24Speaker 4: be patient with it, and let's go win a national championship.
- 10:28Speaker 1: The one thing Fine Bamb and I are going to
- 10:30Speaker 1: agree on is that Arch Band is sitting front row
- 10:32Speaker 1: at the Heisman ceremony probably most likely will be happening,
- 10:36Speaker 1: all right. When we come back NBA free agency. Did
- 10:39Speaker 1: the Milwaukee Bucks already ruin their title chances on day
- 10:43Speaker 1: number one?
- 10:44Speaker 2: We'll talk about it next.
- 10:44Speaker 1: Craig Wait Show rolls on, Andrew zim Will sitting in
