- 2:51means we bring a different mayor into the fold every Monday. I want to
- 2:53welcome in Mayor Dave Case molt from the wonderful city of Nitro. Mayor,
- 2:58good morning, how are you good day? Can you here be okay?
- 3:00I can hear you fine, man, you're sounding sounding loud and clear this
- 3:04morning. Good deal. All right, we got a lot I want to
- 3:07cover with you this morning, Mayor. You know, sports complexes seem to
- 3:10be the hottest projects going on in the Canal Valley and other areas, and
- 3:15you focus about one under construction, which is going to be great. Now
- 3:20doing a little research on this, you're gonna have you know, the area's
- 3:23newest pool, uh, pickleball and tennis facilities. And by the way,
- 3:27program we know that I'm going to learn about pickleball a little bit later on
- 3:30the show. But overall us talk about the sports project you got going on
- 3:32there, Yeah, Dave. So we're just about in the just last few
- 3:38weeks of completing this about five million dollar project. Are welcome centers about two
- 3:44weeks from being completed. They expect to hannis the keys the early part of
- 3:47may Our Pool's way ahead of schedule. We'll be open. It will be
- 3:52opening Memorial Day weekend. And as you were just talking about, we have
- 3:57poured the concrete for nine pickleball courts and four tennis courts and five these will
- 4:02be top in line courts. You'll be talking to John here in a few
- 4:06few minutes about this Sheriff's Association term of Bill w. Hody. There.
- 4:11These are post tension concrete courts that are guaranteed not to crack for twenty years
- 4:17and have a lifespan of about fifty years. So these will be top line
- 4:20courts. Partly the best course in the States. It's amazing how much this
- 4:26sport has grown. Again, as you mentioned, I'm going to talk to
- 4:28John Rutherford about that and some other folks coming up a little bit later on
- 4:30the show. Where for people that maybe don't make it to Nitro very often,
- 4:33Mayor, where exactly is all this going to be? Let's physical location?
- 4:39This is the new sports complex is located right to our right beside Nitro
- 4:43City Park, beside Nitro Football Field where the high school is. So it's
- 4:47just right in the center town and you can't miss it. All right,
- 4:49good stuff Again, we're talking with the Mayor of Nitro, Dave Casewall,
- 4:53on Mayor of Monday here on five eighty live. I know you folks in
- 4:56the town. Mayor have been working on getting rid of a lot of dilapidated
- 4:59buildings. Later they talk about that. Yeah, we continue to use lots
- 5:01of funding from the West Virginia REEP program to remove a lot of commercial and
- 5:08residential structures. In fact, we have removed four large commercial structures along Route
- 5:14twenty five and our main business district. Thirteen residential structures have been removed.
- 5:18We still got one commercial structure and one residential structure remaining on this part of
- 5:24our Phase one of our REEP grants. So, yeah, if you've been
- 5:30through Nitro recently, it's a completely different The whole face of Nitro has changed.
- 5:33It's just we're getting a lot of compliments on and also a lot of
- 5:36strong interest into property. And you know, it's always good to see a
- 5:41lot of buildings go up, but unfortunately may and this happens across the country,
- 5:44sometimes you need to see some buildings come down to make real progress.
- 5:47Yeah, these buildings were dysfunctional. They were ten thousand square foot buildings with
- 5:53six and seven parking spots. So this is going to create a lot of
- 5:57new investment opportunity. And I'll tell you, Dave, the main thing about
- 6:01it is that we now control that property, so we can decide what type
- 6:05of businesses we want, what is in the best interests of Nitrode And I
- 6:09will tell you we are already entertained some very from some very good offers on
- 6:13the properties. And what happened sometimes mayor and other mayors I've had on the
- 6:16show, and that sayment I've talked about that is, you know, when
- 6:19you don't have control of the property and people say, well, why don't
- 6:23you just tear it down? What It's not that simple. And we've talked
- 6:26about that, you know, with you and others on this show. But
- 6:28by not having control of the property, you you just like the definition of
- 6:31no control has I mean, it's a whole lot that you can do with
- 6:34it, uh and uh and And people say that I want this eatery or
- 6:38I want this business to come in or whatever. Till you get till you
- 6:41get that property in your possession to be able to tear it down, There's
- 6:45not a whole lot you can do about it. Now, there's not,
- 6:46Dave, And I'll tell you you know, this is part of our long
- 6:49term plan was to start acquiring property down First Avenue for the purpose of removing
- 6:55it and I and two things, and I know, sound's kind of crazy.
- 6:59When OVID hit, we started the city, we started receiving a lot
- 7:02of federal money and we started turning around investing that money in our community.
- 7:08And if it hadn't been for the West Year Reef Program to come along when
- 7:11it did, then we would own the property, but it wouldn't be down
- 7:15yet. So they have kind of energized this whole thing and we're way way
- 7:18ahead of schedule and it's very exciting for the whole community. We're talking with
- 7:23Mayor Dave Caseboard of Nitro here on five eighty Live five and eylive has brought
- 7:26to part by the Charleston dirty Birds, your hometown baseball season, Great Season,
- 7:30dirty Birds Baseball for tickets packages, dirty Birds gear and more of visit
- 7:33dirty Birds Baseball dot com. Mayor, I knew Earth Day was last week.
- 7:36Lots of things went on with that, but I read about this and
- 7:40I thought it was really cool the city that a recycling program with students at
- 7:44Nitro Elementary School talk about that we did. Cynthy McGill is a city council
- 7:49member and she just does a fantastic job out in the community. And she
- 7:54wanted to start a recycting program over the grade school to start to start teaching
- 7:59those the importance of recycling. So we put together, she put together and
- 8:03a program and we had a contest at the grade school and they recycled for
- 8:09the for about for about a month. And uh, it's a program that
- 8:13we hope to continue into next year. We're already talking to the principal actually
- 8:16Garrett about that and we hope to continue that recycling program next school year.
- 8:22And I also understand that there are some charging stations coming up for electric vehicles
- 8:26and Nitro is that right. So last week we signed a lease agreement with
- 8:31McDonald's, the Nitro McDonald's where we are going to install on their parking lot
- 8:35four level three EV charging stations. Nitro will own those stations and we hope
- 8:45that we hope to receive we're applying for a grant. We hope to getting
- 8:48that money into next next few months and hope to have those installed sometime this
- 8:52year. It's it's very people traveling. If you travel, if you do
- 8:58like revel, you normally stop at the same place. So to have a
- 9:03location that these people know where it's app these EV cars because this is coming.
- 9:07The v cars are coming where people like it or not, that's coming.
- 9:11So we're gonna have four level three charging stations in Nitro where people can
- 9:16pull off. It's right in the middle of our main restaurant areas where a
- 9:20lot of fast food and dining areas are so people can stop charge or cars.
- 9:24It'll be a safe area. So we're very excited about that and believe
- 9:28or not day we're looking at creating about up to a million dollars a year
- 9:33revenue off those stations. Wow, that's incredible. And like you said,
- 9:37like it or not, it's coming. Nine seventeen talking to me or Dave
- 9:41kiss Bold of Nitro Busy summer on tap. You mentioned the pool, you
- 9:46got the family drive in movie night coming all four tuesdays in June. You
- 9:50got this pickleball tournament. So much going on in Nitro, there always is,
- 9:54mayor yeah, I got I'll tell you something else is going one day.
- 9:58But it's very exciting. So we have partner with Secured Net to provide
- 10:01high speed broadband to a lot of the Nitro community. So Dad, the
- 10:05main trunk line has been ran from the Nitro City Bridge down to the Nitro
- 10:13City Park. Now they're on the other side of the truck. They're going
- 10:16down Second Avenue to forty streets in our forty street and we expect to providing
- 10:20high speed broadband to many of the citizens in Nitro by early July. And
- 10:26that's that's amazing. I mean it really it really, really is it is.
- 10:31You got your fishing going on at right now, and also Boomtown Day
- 10:35coming up in the month of September. I know we're kind of jumping ahead.
- 10:37I'm just trying to get everything going on mentioned that you have going on
- 10:41in Nitro. You know what day for a small town, we do have
- 10:45a lot going on. We've got a lot of things that our play,
- 10:46but we do have we got a lot of things happened to summer. Actually,
- 10:52the community has been fantastic because the ability to the pool has disrupted traffic
- 10:58to say the least, that I have received zero complaints about it. They've
- 11:01been very patient through this. So we're gonna have a Dick celebration the weekend
- 11:05we opened the pool. Uh, the asquires are about to ask quires,
- 11:09gonna search some hot dogs and some food and some fireworks that weekend. Then
- 11:18we have. As you said, we have the big pickleball tournament that John's
- 11:20gonna be talking to you about here in late July. Then Boomtown Days we'll
- 11:26be in September. So we have a lot of things or a play,
- 11:28plus are movie nights that we have every summer, every Tuesday night during the
- 11:33summer. I have a text to the show here, Mare, and I
- 11:37don't think that you'd mind for me reading that. Maybe you can offer some
- 11:39clarification. Someone wanted to know about the charge for pickleball and tennis, and
- 11:45the Textris said, after I go play, I used to grab breakfast.
- 11:48If if I go somewhere else, the Nitro restaurants will lose my dollars.
- 11:52Is there a charge or will there be for the pickleball yes, so day,
- 11:58I think it's very fair price. We're offering a two hundred dollars pass.
- 12:01That's all the play for all year long. I will tell you this.
- 12:05We put a great beam in so we can cover those pickleball courts and
- 12:09make them available year round. But or it's twenty dollars an hour, and
- 12:15when you think about it, for the fours and that's five dollars an hour.
- 12:18Everybody put in the verson put everybody, but just puts in a little
- 12:20bit and you're good to go. Mayor. I know that you folks do
- 12:22a great job in promoting everything you've got going on. Just check out social
- 12:26media. I know we threw a lot of information because there's a lot of
- 12:28stuff going on in Nitro. But you can check out your all your social
- 12:33media and websites whatever for the all the information there. It's always a pleasure
- 12:35to talk to you, may and we'll talk again soon, all right,

- 16:30be headed to Nitro anytime soon, according to a texture and that certainly is
- 16:36your right, so also the right for us to talk to our good friend
- 16:38Crest and Gallicer for Americans for prosperity. Good morning, sir, How are
- 16:41you? Good morning, Dave? Thanks for having may have you moved that
- 16:44microphone down a little bed in front of you. There there we go,
- 16:47there we go. So everything going all right with you? Yeah, life
- 16:51is great. So you talked about the weather when you came in. You
- 16:55said that, Well, it's sunny outside and I'm sitting here in a in
- 16:57a heavy duty sweater because it's a little chili out there this morning. Can
- 17:00you do something about that? I can't do anything about that, but I'm
- 17:03a little worried about my garden right now. Yeah, it's yeah, cover
- 17:06your plants tonight. That's what they said, there's a freeze warning. I
- 17:08think in a fact, all right, christ and I hear this term HR
- 17:11one being thrown around a lot lately. What exactly is HR one and why
- 17:18is it so important? Well, Dave, I think we all know that
- 17:21President Biden keeps waging war against america energy sector. It's nothing new to West
- 17:26Virginia, as we've dealt with war on Cole forever. But desplay record inflation,
- 17:30rising costs of goods. President Biden doesn't do anything for the American taxpayer
- 17:34when it comes to energy costs. So Speaker McCarthy and the House of Representatives
- 17:40have passed a bill called HR one, the Lower Energy Costs Act, and
- 17:42does a lot of things, and a few of those I would like to
- 17:45highlight for you. The first thing it does is speed up or streamline the
- 17:49permitting process for these large scale energy projects. So I think we're all familiar
- 17:53with possibly the Mountain Valley Pipeline or the Keystone Pipeline, and we know that
- 17:59it will bring two billion cubic feet of natural gas to the East Coast every
- 18:03day. But they run into a lot of problems. The left has weaponized
- 18:08this process where they have to get an environment impact study to make sure that
- 18:12there's not a huge impact on the local ecosystem, and every time agencies such
- 18:18as the EPA signs off on it, the left, through a group called
- 18:22the Sierra Group, sues right and they put the process in court, even
- 18:27though the EPA has signed off that this project can move forward, and then
- 18:32it gets tangled up in the Fourth Court of Appeals and frankly, these activists
- 18:36judges rule that these projects need to restart. So it does nothing for American
- 18:41energy, does nothing for the taxpayer, and just lowers our ability to lessen
- 18:45our reliance on foreign sources of energy. The other thing it does is it
- 18:51class back thirty billion dollars of green cronyism. So ahead of this next election,
- 18:55President Biden's trying to cut a cross off some progressive wishless items. He
- 19:00wants to show that his voters that he's doing something for the renewable energy and
- 19:03he's using taxpayer money to do it. So they we had Americans for Prosperity
- 19:10to take an all in energy approach, right. We want to use all
- 19:12of energy sources in the United States, and especially the ones beneath our feet
- 19:17to lower energy costs for American citizens. And frankly, propping up filled businesses
- 19:22through government handouts is not the solution. The Lower Energy Costs Act is a
- 19:26lot of other great things like deals with natural gas taxes, that deals with
- 19:30energy production on domestic lands. But it's the Republican plan under Speaker McCarthy to
- 19:34lower energy costs for Americans in the United States. You know, I was
- 19:38doing some research and again we're talking with Crest and Gallagher for Americans for Prosperity
- 19:41going five eighty live a Crest and I was doing some research and this over
- 19:45the weekend. There are some pretty heavy hitters across the country that are on
- 19:49board with this, not just your group. I mean, there's there's a
- 19:52lot of groups across America that are getting behind us, and not necessarily groups
- 19:56that you would blump together sometimes. Yeah, I mean, Dave this is
- 20:02a common sense policy. I'm frankly Chuck Schumer in the United States Senate and
- 20:06why we're getting involved in this has said this process is dead on arrival,
- 20:10and that's a symptom of a broken Washington. We can't even have a debate
- 20:12about the merits of this bill. We can't have a debate or what's good
- 20:17and lowering energy costs for the American people. And we all see record inflation,
- 20:21we all see the rising cost of goods, and Congress is not doing
- 20:23anything because they're not working together lower energy costs. So Americans for Prosperity as
- 20:30launched a six figure effort and key states to influence some of these influential senators
- 20:34to tell Chuck Schumer to take up this bill. Let's have a debate about
- 20:37how we lower energy costs in the United States and let's get something done for
- 20:41the American people. It states like Ohio, Pennsylvania, Nevada, Arizona,
- 20:48Montana, and here in West Virginia, we see Senator Joe Mansion has not
- 20:52doing anything, but he could tell Chuck Schumer to take up this bill.
- 20:55And frankly, after the Inflation Reduction Act, it's the least he could do
- 20:57for the West Virginians. And I'm gonna I've got a little bit of information
- 21:02about Citted mansion. I'm gonna try to get to a little bit later on
- 21:04in the show, but I won't take up your time for that. And
- 21:07Chris, I don't think sometimes people realize what a crisis level that we are
- 21:14at when it comes to our future as it pertains to energy and energy independence.
- 21:18I mean, one way or the other, regardless of how you feel,
- 21:22we are at a crisis point with energy in America. Yeah, and
- 21:26Dave, right now we're seeing in Germany they're having a thought experiment on moving
- 21:30away from nuclear energy, and in West Virginia we've allowed through legislation for us
- 21:34to explore nuclear options in West Virginia. But right now Germany is experimenting with
- 21:41only renewable energy, and I don't think it's working out great for them.
- 21:44Right now, we will rely on a lot of foreign sources of energy.
- 21:48They control the prices and desplay all of the resources underneath our feet. We
- 21:53are not taking an all in energy approach to energy in this country, and
- 21:57I mean we feel it every day. The costs of energy is rising.
- 22:00Americans have less money in their pocket. And frankly, Congress is not doing
- 22:04anything about it. But Speaker McCarthy and the Republicans and the House of Representatives
- 22:07have put forth their plan and we can't even have a debate about it.
- 22:11I mean, Chuck Schumer has said this bill is dead on arrival, and
- 22:14that's just wrong for America. I just don't understand why it is we can't
- 22:17have a at least a discussion about it. That's kind of where I am
- 22:19on the whole thing. Well, I think you know, it's more about
- 22:22political wins at this point. You can't let the Republicans get wins, you
- 22:26can't let the Democrats get wins, and you gotta instead use executive power and
- 22:30get some progressive wish lists than through President Biden's efforts. And frankly, it's
- 22:33wrong. I mean, we should be using common sense approaches and an all
- 22:37energy policy in and frankly unleashed energy abundance in the United States. It's nine

- 22:56America's for prosperity. Jason Huffman, who is the state director for your group,
- 23:00recently had an op ed published in the Gazette Mail in which he asked
- 23:03us, the taxpaying citizens, to say thank you to our legislators if we
- 23:08saw him in the post office or grocery store some other public places. Why
- 23:12are we thanking our legislators? And let's start with taxes. Well, Dave,
- 23:17I think everyone knows that taxes was the number one priority this past session.
- 23:22The Republican majorities have done a great job of keeping the budget in check
- 23:27and they had record surpluses. So the best thing to do is return that
- 23:30money to the American or to the West Virginian taxpayer. We've seen a twenty
- 23:34one percent in reduction income tax and better yet, a pathway forward to completely
- 23:40eliminate the income tax in West Virginia. So that was a great thing for
- 23:42the Megan majorities and Charleston to do and give some much needed relief to the
- 23:48taxpayers or West Virginia. And there's a lot of other things I want to
- 23:52kind of because I know you guys are very involved in the legislative process.
- 23:55A couple other things I want to get your comment on. One of those
- 23:56was, and I think I have the number right. Eight should be twenty
- 24:00five ninety six. That would allow students to pretty much transfer school to school
- 24:07as they wish, with some exceptions. Of course. Now not everyone presdent
- 24:11sees that as a good thing, particularly a lot of those in the athletic
- 24:14arena. No pun intended. Why did your group see that as a good
- 24:18thing? So twenty five ninety six was our gold standard open enrollment bill.
- 24:22So essentially, any student that once the transfer schools within their school district,
- 24:27within their local region should be allowed to regardless of zip code, as long
- 24:32as there's a spot for them. And we found that this bill codifies that
- 24:36for West Virginia ends. And it's a good for empowering the parents, empowering
- 24:41the students to find the best education that's available to them. So if their
- 24:45current schools now working out, they should have the ability to go to a
- 24:48school that's in their region that may be a better option for them. Now
- 24:52that's about empowering parents and students for the best education for their student. But
- 24:56you understand some of the I don't want to say criticism. Maybe some of
- 24:59the things that give people pause on that is that it creates a system where
- 25:03and let's face a lot of them are going to transfer for athletics. I
- 25:07mean, I know there's academic components in that, but the majority presents probably
- 25:10going to do it for athletics. But you can see where that would be
- 25:12problematic. Do you think that the legislature did a good job of hopefully stopping
- 25:18out some of those issues. Yeah, and Dave, we're more concerned about
- 25:22the education of the student, right, you should have all the options.
- 25:25It's your taxpayer money. If you are a property owner, you're paying property
- 25:27tax, and your student is allocate a certain amount of money under that school
- 25:32aid formula, and they should be able to use that formula and those dollars
- 25:34the best for the student's success. I mean, this is really about the
- 25:38student at the end of the day. How do we make sure that students
- 25:41successful moving forward and being a productive member of society. Twenty seven minutes away
- 25:48from ten, I'm going to talk about certificate of need for a moment for
- 25:51medical institutions. I've heard that term. I've had people on both sides of
- 25:55the aisle, no pun intended to talk about that on the show about this
- 25:59certificate need um get into your group's um take on these certificates of need for
- 26:04medical institutions. Well, we oppose certificate need laws. I mean, it's
- 26:08a needless board that basically says that doctors can provide access to service and they're
- 26:17they're taking the hands out of the free market and frankly making up prohibition on
- 26:22expanding medical services in the United In West Virginia, we're one a few states
- 26:26that have these con laws. Many of the states in the in the country
- 26:29have repealed it. Um. Frankly, it's an outdated system. We need
- 26:33access to medical services in West Virginia. Everyone knows that we need more medical
- 26:37providers in this state. UM. So we had CENTI Bill six thirteen,
- 26:41which repealed a small section of that con this pastime for medical services on a
- 26:45hospital campus. And that's a step in the right direction. But we honestly
- 26:48have to get rid of all the COO N laws and we're hoping that the
- 26:52legislature continues to do that because it's really prohibiting West Virginias and getting access to
- 26:56medical care. Where can people are more about your organizations America for Prosperity.
- 27:02I've had Jason Hoffman on the show several times. I think that's the first
- 27:03time, but you've been on in this realm? Where can people learn more
- 27:07about you organization? And what is Americans for Prosperity basically, what's the mission
- 27:11statement? Well, our mission statement is to expand freedom and opportunity for all
- 27:15Americans. So we are focused on empowering citizens to embolden lawmakers the past,
- 27:21good policy, common sense policy that makes sense for West Virginia. And so
- 27:25we are right a center group. We focus on legislation that's good for the
- 27:29state and moves us towards a path of prosperity that's a better state for the

- 32:36the text. I'll try to get back to I want to welcome in John
- 32:38Rutherford, who is the director of Metro nine one one here in the county
- 32:42at Pickaball enthusiasts Collee John, how are you? Thank you? Dave Yes,
- 32:45very very excited of him at a couple of gentlemen, Todd Fowle and
- 32:49Matt Duncan. They're the pickleball player, the pickaball gurus of the Charleston area,
- 32:53and they've got me involved in pickleball and I absolutely love it. It's
- 32:55great for young ladies, is older men, women all alike. It's a
- 33:01great, great game. It's very competitive for all. Gas about the microphone,
- 33:06introduce yourself here. Hell, I'm with Charleston Pickleball Club, all right,
- 33:09and and Matt Duncan also at Charleston Pickaball Club. Okay. So I
- 33:14had Mayor case Bolt from Nitro on the show earlier, and I know that
- 33:16they're excited about pickleball there for the uneducated in this sport, as as I
- 33:21am, explain to us any of you exactly what is pickleball as best you
- 33:27can on radio. I know what's kind of hard to do. Explain what
- 33:29pickleball is and how's it, how's it played? A great question the best
- 33:32way to probably describe it is it's a blend of ping pong, badminton,
- 33:37tennis, racquetball, a lot of different racket sports that you're probably familiar with.
- 33:45The nice thing about it is is, um, anybody can play it.
- 33:49I've seen I was in a tournament recently where a grandfather and a grandson
- 33:54played together and they were competitive. So age sex um, you know it
- 34:01kind of pickleball levels the playing field. So explain to us again exactly what
- 34:08are the roles? How's it played? So getting that, So there's singles,
- 34:12there's doubles. UM singles is played typically like a singles tennis match would
- 34:19be UM doubles. You only the serving side UM scores and each player on
- 34:28the serving side of doubles gets to serve it then sides out and the other
- 34:34team will take over. Similar it's away a ping pong match is played.
- 34:37You only you only score when you're serving. And how does the scoring so
- 34:42it typically it's one to eleven, win by two, and again you you
- 34:49only score on the serving side. And this is something that UH and John
- 34:53kind of touched on. This is something anybody of any age can take part
- 34:57in, right absolutely, I mean it's so ea easy to pick up and
- 35:00if you want to walk on the court, pick up a paddle and play
- 35:04and have fun. It's easy to do. But you can also really get
- 35:07serious about it and get competitive and take it to an even higher levels.
- 35:12And a lot of people are very serious about this. As I said,
- 35:15it is the fastest growing sport in America, and possibly because of that,
- 35:19because of people of all ages and all backgrounds. And I can't imagine it
- 35:22would be a very expensive sport to play. I mean, no podcall for
- 35:27something. Right, paddles started, you know, forty or fifty dollars,
- 35:30they go on up just like anything else. But you can get started relatively
- 35:35cheaply, and public courts are available. South Charleston has done such a great
- 35:40job in providing us with a great place to play over at the Jackson Park
- 35:45facility. So it's it's easy to just pick up a paddle of ball and
- 35:50even if you don't have one, come see us. We'll help you.
- 35:52Where are some of the places that people can play locally other than other than
- 35:54event in South Charles were some of the other places. So Knas City has
- 36:00some outdoor courts that are marked at the tennis center there. UM. Then
- 36:04there's a new facility which you had the mayor in earlier, coming up coming
- 36:09in Nitro. We can also play at the y indoors. UM Charleston Tennis
- 36:15Club is also available if you're a member UM the community. We have Shawnee
- 36:21now, yeah, the Shawnee. Shawnee's new right, thanks John. The
- 36:23new facility at Shawnee has eight outdoor courts. UM the community centers UM have
- 36:30indoor play many days of the week in the morning. So if if you're
- 36:35looking for a place to play UM our web, you can find us on
- 36:38Charleston Pickleball Club Facebook. Just reach out to us and we'll help you find.
- 36:43They also play over in Valley Park, I think, which is down
- 36:45for my house. I think over in I think I think there's a pickleball
- 36:47facility of Valley Park. There is there's there's a lot of tennis courts they've
- 36:51marked for pickle right in the it's kind of like a dual dual purpose,
- 36:54right, and that's a little higher, but you still play in like Coonskin
- 36:58that has marked now for pickle. Well, there's there's place. It's growing
- 37:00so much that almost every city and every County government's making places for us to
- 37:06play. Now, as you mentioned, we talked to Mayor case Ball earlier
- 37:09from Nitro. Huge tournament is going to be coming up there in July.
- 37:15I mean, people are serious about coming to the Kanal Valley for this.
- 37:19Yes. Absolutely. That facility in Nitro is going to be the biggest outdoor
- 37:23facility in West Virginia. It'll have eight or nine dedicated outdoor courts with the
- 37:30ability to convert for tennis courts into eight more pickleball courts for a total of
- 37:36seventeen, which is which is just huge. And we're so excited about the
- 37:42tournament coming up. It's going to be a great and how many teams are
- 37:44you expecting to you again, we're expecting over one hundred, maybe one hundred
- 37:46and twenty different people, not just teams, right, yeah, yeah,
- 37:51that's that's our goal. Well, and that's amazing, And that's what we
- 37:53keep talking about with the sports travel thing, whether it's with the youth or
- 37:57the adult those people are not just going to come here and play and go
- 38:00home. I mean they're going to stay in the hotels, they're gonna eat
- 38:02at the restaurants. And when people has said to me when they talk about
- 38:06building hotels, for example in downtown Charleston other areas. People to the show
- 38:08said, well, why do we need hotels? And that's why we need
- 38:12hotels in this year because there's not enough place that to put all these people.
- 38:15We just started registrate registration here in the last few weeks and that's two
- 38:17of the first regis registers we had was from Lexton, Kentucky. And then
- 38:22we have a young lady from in Missouri who sells the Yala paddles that she's
- 38:27actually coming in. She wants to see the facility and be part of the
- 38:30tournament also. So we're excited about that. Five eighty life presented in part

- 39:05And John, I understand and either any of you can answer this to Sponsorships
- 39:07for this tournament are still available? Is that right? Oh? Yeah,
- 39:09we're always looking for sponsors. We're really excited this this tournament. Uh.
- 39:13When pickleball first came in and I met Matt and Todd, we decided to
- 39:16have a tournament. It's the Nitro or excuse me, it's the Metro nine
- 39:20one one Employees Association that's putting on the tournament. Uh, it's it's available.
- 39:23Go to pickleball brackets dot com to register, or you can go to
- 39:27the Metro nine one one website and we have a link to it. We
- 39:30can register and we have a we have a we have a great tournament plan.
- 39:35We have a community to night Friday night, which is free to the
- 39:37public. We're gonna have a few food trucks there, food boosts there.
- 39:42We're gonna have free pickleball lessons. We're gonna have the courts available to players
- 39:45that come in and practice on the courts uh the swim pool. The Nitro
- 39:50mayors made the pool available. The pool be open to all the community to
- 39:52come swim for free. The splash park will be for free. We're gonna
- 39:57we're gonna have the Humane Society there with some dogs for adoption. If someone
- 40:00wants to adopt a dog, Metro will pay for all the fees. So
- 40:05we're trying to make us a true community event. On Friday night and then
- 40:07Saturday and Sunday, Matt and Todd will take over and we'll have our tournament
- 40:12and have a great tournament. We've worked real hard with our sponsors. We've
- 40:15got over forty sponsors. Now we will be giving away we were talking about
- 40:21the paddles a little bit ago for people to play with. We're actually Yalla
- 40:24and Seal Kirk Selkirk paddles, the best paddles you can get. Will actually
- 40:31be giving away ten of those paddles, ten of each of those paddles for
- 40:35total twenty paddles to the people they're registered. So we gets great duor prizes
- 40:38for our participants. And one of the dates of this again, July twenty
- 40:42first, will be Community Night and it'll be a Friday evening and then the
- 40:45twenty second and twenty third of July will be the tournament itself. Will there
- 40:49be a cutoff on the amount of teams that you can have? I mean,
- 40:52is it unlimited now? With the courts at the city and night droves
- 40:54put up, we will be unlimited to bring anyone everyone. Like John mentioned,
- 41:00cockball brackets dot Com is the place to make your account and log on
- 41:02and get registered for the event. And we're really looking forward to it.
- 41:06It's gonna be a great thing again for the area because again you're gonna have
- 41:09people that are going to come in. You said, the first person to
- 41:12sign up was from Lexington, and there'll be some local people, there'll be
- 41:15some out of town people too, and so, I mean, it's just
- 41:17amazing to me how how this sport has grown. Every outdoor facility just about
- 41:22that I can think of in the state of West virginia's saying we gotta get
- 41:25on board with this, we gotta, we gotta get pickleball. If you
- 41:29go to Jackson Park during the week in the evenings, there's forty to fifty
- 41:32people playing every night. Wow, every night. It's great and one of
- 41:37the origins of the sport. I mean, where did this thing just kind
- 41:38of pop up? Because I just, you know, one day I'd never
- 41:42heard of the next thing. I know, everything that you read is about
- 41:44pickleball, I mean, with any idea like where it actually came from.
- 41:47So it came from Washington, the state of Washington. It started in nineteen
- 41:52sixty five. They were they were playing uh kind of a clause I pickleball
- 42:00sport. There was two families that had gotten together and they needed to create
- 42:05a sport that their kids and the adults could play together. And they ended
- 42:09up building a court in the back backyard and fabricated some you know, makeshift
- 42:16paddles and just developed the rules. And it's interesting. One of the reasons
- 42:21that the kitchen was developed, which is part of the court, was because
- 42:24one of the players was extremely tall and he dominated the net, so they
- 42:30had to keep him back from the net in order to make it fair.
- 42:34So one kind of neat story about why the kitchen was developed. Okay,
- 42:37God had a text of the show. Wanted to know if there are any
- 42:40free pickleball courts in the valley over the place. Yeah, they're all the
- 42:45only ones that that right now that are paid courts would be Charleston Tennis Club,
- 42:51everything else, and the one of Nitro is going to be I think,
- 42:54yeah, it's I don't think they've decided, Dave what they're going to
- 42:58do with that yet, whether they're going to charge memberships or not. Yeah,
- 43:00I think the mayor talked about that a little bit. Oh, you
- 43:02guys didn't get to You guys are waiting to go on. You didn't get
- 43:05to get But there are plenty of what you're saying, plenty of free places
- 43:08to play pickaball. Just find us on Charleston Pickleball Club on our Facebook page.
- 43:15Reach out to us, and we'll help facilitate you know, getting in,
- 43:17getting you started all right. Recap again. The tournament dates July twenty
- 43:22one, twenty second, and twenty third. We have a great sponsorship if

- 44:04so quite a few John said just call He did not mean call nine

- 47:36I'm gonna get to got a text I didn't get to. Somebody said,
- 47:38why do you always take it easy on Mike Pushkin. It's all about perspective,
- 47:44man, It's all about how you perceive it. I guess all right,
- 47:51text says when going on a long trip, most people keep their phones

- 47:58these items drain in addition to the power needed to drive. I don't know,

- 48:15Thank you. I want to thank everybody who came out to the Westerndinia Food
- 48:21Truck Festival this past weekend at the Putnam County Fairgrounds in Eleanore. Throughout the
- 48:24day, somewhere in the neighborhood of about three thousand people were there at one
- 48:29time or another. Great food, great music, little rain, nothing major.
- 48:34There was a great day all arounds to thanks to everyone who came out
- 48:36for that. It's going to be made official this week. The governor wants
- 48:39to be the Senator, as in taking the scene currently occupied by Senator Joe
- 48:43Mansion An official announcement is set to be made Thursday night at the Greenbrier.
- 48:46Story post to wv metronews dot com and the stories by Jeff Jenkins also says
- 48:52that announcement time could change, or maybe the meaning of the announcement. We
- 48:57don't know you, but as of right now, it sometime Thursday evening at
- 48:59the Greenbrier, and you know, being up in the air, one would
- 49:01expect nothing less from our governor. Thursday is also Governor Justice is seventy second
- 49:07birthday, and this story is gaining national traction. In fact, Politico was
- 49:13one of the first media outlets on the national level to cover it. Congressman
- 49:16Alex Mooney, we know is already in place. Still not known what Senator
- 49:21Mansion is going to do. I said this last week, and I've been
- 49:24wrong plenty of times before. But if it's a matchup between Governor Justice and
- 49:30Alex Mooney for Senate, I think Governor Justice wins. Now, if it's
- 49:35if it's between Governor Justice and Senator Joe Mansion, I think it's a toss
- 49:40up, but I think it would favor Justice. If it's Mooney and Mansion,
- 49:45no question Mansion wins. But we shall see Alex Mooney, by the
- 49:47way, he's going to be on Hoppy coming up on talk line at the
- 49:51top of the hour. A couple of quick local notes story posted ww metronews

- 50:45an AAU basketball game. A South Charleston police officer was checked out by medical
- 50:50professionals for a possible concussion after a man picked him up and through the officer
- 50:53to the ground outside the Community Center. I guess the story is the cops
- 51:01were there trying to remove some people from the building after what was a very
- 51:06very close basketball game there and a Saint Alban's man was charged with obstruction and
- 51:14battery on the police officer. He was later released on bond. Story posted
- 51:17wv metronews dot com it was a busy weekend to save the least four officials
- 51:23around this day. And I guess if you look at when the weather gets
- 51:28warmer, and of course this weekend was not too terribly warm, crime and
- 51:30things tend to go up. I don't know what's going on with people,
- 51:32but it seems like people are just crazier in these days. I mean the
- 51:36policing area. We're out of this AU basketball game. We had the Charleston
- 51:39firefighter who was off duty, by the way, with this situation there in
- 51:43North Charleston. There were several shootings I think over the last several days in
- 51:46the Beckley area. Story that Chris had this morning about a violent weekend in
- 51:51Harrison County, I don't know what's going on. I just don't know.
