Latest / What's Your (Least) Favorite Scary Movie? / #162: Nope (2022)
Transcript
- 0:06Hello. What's your least favorite scary
- 0:08movie? Some animals ain't fit to be
- 0:13trained. Welcome to What's your least
- 0:15favorite scary movie? The podcast where we talk about
- 0:17the good, the bad, the ugly, and the absurd, and all of our
- 0:20favorite. And least favorite.
- 0:22Scary movies. Because we believe every horror
- 0:24movie rightfully has this fan base.
- 0:26Even if we don't always get it. My name is Travis.
- 0:28My name is Jessie. And welcome back, everybody.
- 0:31We are talking about our very first Jordan Pill movie today.
- 0:36Can't believe it's taking us this long.
- 0:38I know. Truthfully, yeah, it's been it's
- 0:40been a long overdue and we're going out of order.
- 0:43But we're talking about his most recent one, which came out last
- 0:46year, 2022. Nope, that's right.
- 0:48But before we get into any of that, do you have any
- 0:52announcements? On Sunday, Sunday, Sundays,
- 0:58Sundays, Sundays, Sundays, Sunday we'll have our Scream
- 1:03series wrap up. Yeah.
- 1:05Because next week we are starting our new franchise.
- 1:07We're we're going to be talking about Saw for the better part of
- 1:10the year. So yeah, buckle up.
- 1:12It's going to be it's. Going to be a wild, wild ride.
- 1:15I can't wait for it though. Yeah, yeah, I'm so excited.
- 1:18But yeah, so we'll have that as a bonus episode out on Sunday.
- 1:22And you know, just a reminder again about the ongoing sag
- 1:25after strikes, because we wouldn't have wonderful movies
- 1:28like Nope. Without writers and actors.
- 1:31And they deserve to be recognized for their
- 1:33contributions. They deserve fair working
- 1:35conditions. And if you're one of those
- 1:37people on the Internet who says AI is going to replace actors
- 1:41and writers, then I'm sorry, but I question your tastes a little
- 1:45bit. I mean, we all have our own
- 1:46taste, but you don't get originality with AI.
- 1:48Like AI literally is recycling old ideas.
- 1:51If you are thinking that, I recommend trying to watch that
- 1:55AI generated Seinfeld. That's like going on continuous
- 1:58loop. It's pretty fucking bad, yeah.
- 2:01But it's entertaining as like a novelty thing, but like if it.
- 2:04I don't like the idea of AI doing a full and take.
- 2:07Yeah, if I if AI takes over Hollywood, we fully moved over
- 2:12into like a dystopian future hellscape.
- 2:16And all hope is lost. Yeah.
- 2:18So let's not go down that road. Let's support the creative
- 2:21people who make art happen. Let's do it.
- 2:24All right. Well, if that's all you got,
- 2:26I've got our poll results from last week's movie.
- 2:29All right, I I forget the polls every single time.
- 2:33Every single time you're like, I've got poll results and it's
- 2:35like it's news to me all over again that we even had a poll
- 2:39well. The polls were my idea in the
- 2:411st place, I think. Yeah, I think so too.
- 2:44Oh well, whatever. Well, OK, Lauren, with everybody
- 2:46else today, what the results were.
- 2:49So last week we talked about the hunt.
- 2:51Mm HM, and we asked everybody who you would like to have seen
- 2:55more of from the movie. So our four options were yoga
- 3:01pants. Emma Roberts.
- 3:02Vanilla. Nice.
- 3:04Sturgill Simpson. That's sexy.
- 3:06We don't know. I don't know her.
- 3:08I know her name, but I forgot her name.
- 3:09I'm really sorry. That feels hateful.
- 3:11I'm. Sorry.
- 3:12Yeah, and Staten Island. Ike Baron Holtz.
- 3:15See, that's even worse. I knew all three of the other
- 3:17ones. I'm so sorry, Dad.
- 3:18Sexy. You did a really good job.
- 3:20The other three are more in line with like, the things that we
- 3:22enjoy. Yeah, we watch them in multiple
- 3:24things. That's why we know them.
- 3:26Yeah, like those are the only people I know from that cast.
- 3:29Everybody else is kind of just whatever, except for, like,
- 3:32we'll talk about like all of the people.
- 3:34They get hunted, at least. Either way, whatever.
- 3:37So on Twitter, 75% want more yoga pants?
- 3:41OK, 25% want more vanilla? Nice.
- 3:44OK, nobody wants dead sexy and nobody wants Staten Island.
- 3:48On Instagram, 38% want more yoga pants. 12% want vanilla nice,
- 3:5412% went dead sexy and 38% went Staten Island.
- 3:59So there's a tie between yoga pants and Staten Island and
- 4:01vanilla, nice and dead sexy. OK, What's your vote, Travis?
- 4:06Vanilla nice dude like I that's what I said last time.
- 4:09I think Sergio Simpson is a surprisingly good actor.
- 4:13He brings some a lot of entertainment to the things that
- 4:17I've seen him do. And I think given that role that
- 4:20he had, I wish we would have exported more because seeing him
- 4:24as a. Like ultra right wing,
- 4:28conservative and righteous gemstones was kind of
- 4:30entertaining despite him being a gross character.
- 4:33Yeah, he makes it fun. Was that he wanted to rename the
- 4:36Brothers of Tomorrow's Fire or whatever.
- 4:39I don't know, Militia's called. Protests and.
- 4:41Statues, yeah. Protest and statue.
- 4:44Yeah, it's like something about the monuments, whatever, Like
- 4:46the Confederate monuments, I think.
- 4:49Yep, that's that's 100% they're. Talking about OK, what about
- 4:52you? OK.
- 4:54So we talked about this a little bit last week, too, because
- 4:57obviously I'm in love with Emma Roberts, but I I don't need more
- 5:03of this character from her in this movie.
- 5:06I'm about to take you down my annual fall rewatch of Scream
- 5:11Queens, and we'll get a lot of the same kind of beats from her
- 5:14with that. Plus, after we talked about the
- 5:16hunt last week, we went and watched Scream Four.
- 5:18Which we got more Emma Roberts there?
- 5:21Yes. So yeah.
- 5:21Absolutely. There's plenty of stuff for her
- 5:23out there. I enjoy Ike Barenholtz and I
- 5:26think he's very funny, so I think it would have been fun to
- 5:29see what he could do. But I love the fact that
- 5:31Sturgill Simpson was cast as Florida Man and I feel like we
- 5:34needed Florida Man in in this movie.
- 5:37We needed to take advantage of having a Florida Man.
- 5:40I wanted to know exactly what was going on with him.
- 5:43Yeah, he had the look. He was very Florida.
- 5:45Yeah. So that's my answer.
- 5:47OK. As I believe it was, Chad said
- 5:53on Twitter. Kentucky got a represent.
- 5:55Yeah, he's a Kentucky boy. He's not too far from where I am
- 5:59from, actually, so it's kind of cool, all right.
- 6:03Okay. Well that's done.
- 6:05So let's get into Nope, Nope. Nope.
- 6:08OK, so Nope. Release July 22nd, 2022.
- 6:14We watched it on Amazon Prime. As of today, August 13th, 2023,
- 6:20you can stream it on Prime, which is the only place that's
- 6:23streaming, or you can rent it on Redbox, Apple, Amazon, or
- 6:26YouTube. It's written and directed by
- 6:29Jordan Peele, music by Michael Abels, and special effects are
- 6:34done by MPC, which stands for Moving Pictured Company.
- 6:37Very fitting. Yes, the leads on that are
- 6:41Giameh Rocherin, Jeremy Robert and Frederick Wisal starring.
- 6:46Daniel Kaluuya as OJ Keke, Palmer as Emerald.
- 6:50Speaking of Scream Queens, you're about to see a whole lot
- 6:52more of her because you didn't know that she was in both
- 6:54seasons until we were talking about it last night.
- 6:55Yeah, she's. I'm excited to see more of her.
- 6:59I don't. I don't feel like I've actually
- 7:00seen a whole lot of her and things before.
- 7:03I've seen her in this and I honestly can't tell you that
- 7:06she's in. A couple.
- 7:07She's in an episode of Key and Peele.
- 7:10OK, yeah, so she's worked with Jordan Peele before, actually.
- 7:13OK, that's fitting then. Brandon Perea as Angel, Stephen
- 7:18Yun as Jupe, Michael Wincott as Antlers, who I'm singingly wrote
- 7:22down as Anters the entire time. Anters.
- 7:25Yeah, but it's antlers, which surprised me whenever I wore in
- 7:29that. And Keith David playing Otis.
- 7:33All right, Jesse, our favorite game.
- 7:36Budget. Or budget what do?
- 7:40You think? Oh, this is Jordan Peele's third
- 7:43outing. There is a ton of effects, a
- 7:45stellar cast. I'm going with budget.
- 7:50OK, yeah, this thing. Like, there's no way that this
- 7:53thing could have been made cheap.
- 7:55And I've seen some of the behind the scenes stuff to see what it
- 7:58looks like. And they fucking went all out
- 8:00with all this stuff. So the budget for this $68
- 8:03million? OK.
- 8:05Opening Box office 44,000,000 Worldwide gross 171,000,000.
- 8:10IMDb 6.8. OK.
- 8:14All right. I got 3 movies.
- 8:16We have talked a lot about 2022 here recently, so I did my best
- 8:21to pick ones that I think we haven't talked about.
- 8:25There's really no way to do any thematically similar movies
- 8:29here, so I did the best I can. The first one I feel like
- 8:33actually is kind of close, and that one is pray.
- 8:38Which Pray? Is a prequel to the Predator
- 8:43movies, which is about an alien form coming to Earth to hunt
- 8:49people. But I don't necessarily know
- 8:51what this one is about. I don't, I'm I'm not seeing a
- 8:54single Predator movie, so I don't really know anything about
- 8:56it. I don't know the war.
- 8:58I just, I just know they exist and I know that this one existed
- 9:01and people loved it. So that's the thing.
- 9:03It's a Hulu movie so if you if you are interested watch it I
- 9:07guess. But that released August 5th,
- 9:092022 budget of 65,000,000 worldwide gross doesn't exist
- 9:16because it went straight to streaming.
- 9:17Yeah, and the IMDb is 7.1. Wow.
- 9:21Yeah, so it was more expensive, and that has a higher score than
- 9:24Nope, which is weird. You said Nope was 68 million.
- 9:27No. Nope.
- 9:27Is 44. Oh, wait, wait.
- 9:30OK, never mind. You're right.
- 9:31So yeah, it's about as expensive.
- 9:34OK, 3 million shy. Whatever.
- 9:37Both exensive Alien movies. Good at keeping track of numbers
- 9:40over here. #2 Dark glasses. Oh shit, yeah.
- 9:47So this is the 2022 Argento movie that came out.
- 9:52That was kind of a cool one because we got to see that one
- 9:55on its premiere because they premiered it as a surprise movie
- 9:59on Shudder. Shudder was just like, guess
- 10:01what, bitches? We're showing a worldwide
- 10:03premiere at 9:00 on this day. We ain't telling you what it is.
- 10:08Yeah. And we tuned in and it was.
- 10:11I was not expecting that movie. I I I can't even remember what I
- 10:15was thinking it was going to be, but.
- 10:16Yeah, everybody assumed it was going to be something else, so
- 10:19it was a very pleasant surprise. Fuck yeah, it's a good movie
- 10:22too. Like he still got it.
- 10:24Honestly, if I had to say so for myself, that movie came out
- 10:27October 13th, 2022. Don't have a budget for it, but
- 10:32the worldwide gross was 228,000 IMDb 5.1.
- 10:38OK. And the last one, I know that
- 10:40this one is kind of a 2023 movie, but it did have its
- 10:44premiere in 2022, so it'll count.
- 10:47It is skinnier rink and that is one that we have yet to watch
- 10:52because we don't know how we feel about it before we even
- 10:57start it. I was willing to give it a shot
- 11:00until I heard more and more and more about it.
- 11:03It sounds like a very experimental movie that I just
- 11:06don't have the time for. An experimental movie that is,
- 11:09like, really, really long from what I.
- 11:10Could gather, yeah. And I understand some people
- 11:12love it and honestly, more power to you.
- 11:14But none of what I've heard about it appeals to me and I
- 11:16just life is too short. Yeah, maybe one day give it a
- 11:21shot, but not anywhere near the top of my wist right now, yeah.
- 11:26Well, it premiered July 25th, 2022 with a budget of $15,000
- 11:32worldwide gross of 2,000,000, so that's a pretty good return
- 11:35right there. IMDb of five.
- 11:37So it seems like the internet's pretty evenly split on it.
- 11:40Yeah. All right, got 2 tag lines and
- 11:43you're gonna hate them both. Oh.
- 11:45No, yes. So the first one that is on the
- 11:48poster is a new terror from the mind of Academy Award winner
- 11:52Jordan Peele. Okay, Does the other one mention
- 11:55something about get out? No, it doesn't.
- 11:57Actually, this one, I don't know.
- 11:59This one is just too wordy. The residents of a lonely Gulch
- 12:04in inland California bear witness to an uncanny and
- 12:07chilling discovery. It just sounds like a synopsis.
- 12:11Honestly. Yeah.
- 12:12That. Like it sounds like you're
- 12:13scrolling on Netflix. Yeah, that's like, that's what
- 12:16it's trying to get you to watch the movie.
- 12:17Yeah, that's on the tagline. I don't know.
- 12:19So we'll have to come up with something good for this at the
- 12:21end of the episode. But yeah, OK, fun facts.
- 12:26Fun facts. OK, so Nope stands for Not of
- 12:31Planet Earth. He considered titling it little
- 12:35green men to reference the theme of monetizing spectacles.
- 12:39OK, but I feel like that would have been super confusing
- 12:43because it is about aliens and there are no little green men in
- 12:48this. Yeah, OK.
- 12:49But there's like a very, very small town right near where I'm
- 12:52from that has like Little Green Men days fest Little green men
- 12:55days. Yeah, I remember you talking
- 12:56about that. The movie list that he gave the
- 12:59cast for this involve close Encounters of the Fourth Kind.
- 13:03I think it's what it's called Jaws.
- 13:06Alien No Country for Old Men and 2001 Space Odyssey.
- 13:10I can kind of see all of those influences.
- 13:13There. I gotta be honest, I've only
- 13:15seen Jaws and Alien of that whole thing, so I don't really
- 13:18understand. I know 2001 is like the whole
- 13:23thing. The whole thing is about AI,
- 13:25isn't it? It's not necessarily about alien
- 13:27life. Yeah, so it's about.
- 13:30I mean, it's kind of a similar thing because how like takes
- 13:34over the ship, right? Develops a mind of its own.
- 13:36And I think it's similar to the concept of what they talk about
- 13:38in this movie, where you don't train an animal, you come to an
- 13:43agreement with it. And so like saying I'm going to
- 13:46create AI and it's going to listen to me and obey me, no.
- 13:51OK. I guess that, that makes sense.
- 13:53Yeah. No country for old men, I guess,
- 13:55for like the Western elements that he puts in there sometimes,
- 13:57which you know. Yeah, no, we definitely get a
- 14:00lot of a Western feel, yeah. That and then the others like
- 14:03Jaws, I can definitely see. I feel like after it was pointed
- 14:06out that Jaws was an influence. It kind of makes a lot of sense
- 14:09for me. Yeah.
- 14:11OK. So and.
- 14:12Then close Encounters of the Third Kind is about aliens too,
- 14:16I believe. Yeah, it is, yeah.
- 14:18It's like a whole thing about like, aliens coming in and
- 14:20abducting. I've never seen it, but I know
- 14:22people really love that movie. OK, so.
- 14:27The alien that we do see in this movie was influenced by an anime
- 14:31called Neon Genesis. Evan Jellian, Yvonne Jellian.
- 14:35Yeah, because Jordan feels a nerd.
- 14:39Have you ever seen me? I have had this on before and I
- 14:45it's like a really cool concept. So the whole point of that thing
- 14:48is there are these things called angels, and they are monsters
- 14:52that have suddenly started terrorizing the Earth.
- 14:55And they have to. They've developed this program
- 14:59where they have like, these giant machines that people can
- 15:01operate to, like, combat them, OK, but like, they're like the
- 15:04angels are just like massive creatures.
- 15:07And the one that he has here is a specific one that influenced
- 15:10it. And it was Sahaquil, the 10th
- 15:13Angel, which I looked up a picture of it, and it's
- 15:16basically like this giant eyeball in the sky.
- 15:19Well, and here's the thing too. Is that it?
- 15:23Even though it's not quite the literal representation of a
- 15:27biblical Angel, you kind of get that sense from it, just with
- 15:30some of the description. So I like that it is based off
- 15:35of a different kind of Angel. Yeah, Jesse Blemens was
- 15:40originally going to be in this movie.
- 15:42What he was. I think it was written for him
- 15:45to be Joop, but he turned it down to film a Martin Scorsese
- 15:48movie instead. OK, so they ended up casting
- 15:53Steven Yuen in it. Did that say his name right that
- 15:56time? Yeah, I'm not mad about Steven
- 15:57yen. I just man, I can't believe we
- 16:01also almost got Jesse Plemmons. I feel like I could really see
- 16:05Jesse Plemmons in that role, too.
- 16:08I feel like he would do very. Yeah, I feel like he would rock
- 16:07that just as. I feel like Steven yen does a
- 16:11really good job of being like the sleazy salesman, and I feel
- 16:15like Jesse Plemmons would have done good at being like.
- 16:17Self deprecating, traumatized, but like trying to cover it up.
- 16:21No, I don't necessarily get any squeeze from Steven because I
- 16:25feel like he is too nice of a guy.
- 16:26Even with the way he acts that his personality and everything
- 16:30that he portrays, it's like too kind to come off as like
- 16:33squeezy. I know that his actions in the
- 16:35movie are actually pretty squeezy, but just anytime I see
- 16:38him, he just he is just too nice.
- 16:41It's a nice guy. Yeah, I think Jesse Plymen's
- 16:43like He's got a lot of range with his performances.
- 16:45I've seen him play like a. Fucking psychopath and Breaking
- 16:48Bad like. Yeah, I think we could have
- 16:50gotten a little bit of that, like trauma brought to the
- 16:52surface with Jesse Plummans. I think so too.
- 16:56That I do think Steven yen did really get that too.
- 16:59Yeah, and I think they had to do like some small rewrites for
- 17:02him, but I don't think it really changed the character too much.
- 17:07OK, Angel was originally supposed to be a nerdy, very
- 17:10cheerful type of dude whenever he was written by Jordan Peele,
- 17:14But then whenever. Brandon came to the movie.
- 17:17He wanted to ground the character because he felt like
- 17:20that's not exactly how that person would act in this
- 17:24situation. He OK, He said that he's like,
- 17:26he's seen Jordan stuff. He knows that he goes for a more
- 17:29grounded approach and then he just kind of said, hey, like, I
- 17:32think that he actually like he's working at Fry's.
- 17:35He's not going to be the Super excited dude.
- 17:39Yeah, I was gonna say I like this characterization because,
- 17:42you know this guy. Yeah, exactly.
- 17:44Yeah, he's the guy that you go to.
- 17:45Like, he's helpful, but like, you can tell he wants to himself
- 17:47the entire time. He's.
- 17:48Yeah, like, he clearly got the job.
- 17:50He clearly knows what he's doing.
- 17:51But he also clearly has like bigger dreams for himself and
- 17:54his jaded because he's living in fucking Hollywood.
- 17:56Exactly, yeah. Speaking of fries, it was
- 17:59actually closed down several weeks before filming started.
- 18:03Like the whole business shut down.
- 18:04So I. Remember reading about that in
- 18:07online discussions where people were like, oh, it made me sad to
- 18:09see fries. Yeah, which?
- 18:11We've never been to a fries, clearly.
- 18:14It might be like a W West Coast thing, I guess.
- 18:16Yeah. So yeah.
- 18:17But they like reopened it and the the owners of the business
- 18:22actually cameoed in the movie. Oh, did they?
- 18:24Yeah, they were there on set. Whenever they were using one of
- 18:27the locations that they reopened for that, and then they were
- 18:29actually part of the crowd that gets sucked up into the sky.
- 18:33Oh, that's fun. Yeah, that that would be a cameo
- 18:36I would love to do. Yeah, getting sucked up into the
- 18:38sky. And yeah, making Alien brunch.
- 18:40Yeah, Kiki's intro monologue had 14 takes, and Jordan Peele
- 18:44described each of them as wildly different, uncuttably so, so he
- 18:49couldn't piece them together. He ended up just having to pick
- 18:51one that worked the best. OK, so I like it.
- 18:54You said it was basically just all improv the entire time.
- 18:58Well, I like her, her delivery. It feels you get a sense of the
- 19:03character right away and it also like it just feels very Keke
- 19:08Palmer, like as somebody that has watched her for years, like
- 19:11it's like. Yeah, it.
- 19:13Feels good to see her on a screen right now, yeah.
- 19:16I liked it too. Yeah, it's nice.
- 19:18Speaking of that monologue, so the whole thing about the movie
- 19:21is that they come from. The descendants of the people
- 19:25that were part of that original motion picture, which, yeah, the
- 19:28whole the movie is called. Now most people know it as the
- 19:32horse emotion, but the one that is references Sally Gardner at
- 19:36the Gallup or at a Gallup. And real thing is we don't
- 19:41really know who the person is that they're referencing the
- 19:46original motion picture. Is somebody named Gilbert Dom
- 19:51maybe? Nobody knows like have.
- 19:54Nobody has like an actual way to confirm that because it's all
- 19:56speculation. This is all back in like the
- 19:59late 1800s. So as much documentation as he
- 20:02had back then, but the one that we actually see in the movie
- 20:05isn't the actual first motion picture.
- 20:09It's after he, the guy that did that, had refined everything and
- 20:13he ended up getting it to a point where he made one called
- 20:16Play 6 to 6, which is what we see in the film.
- 20:19It looks better. So that's probably why.
- 20:22They use that for the film because you can actually see it
- 20:25better, but the guy that is in that one is actually unknown
- 20:31entirely. Nobody has any clue who that is.
- 20:33And I like that Jordan Peele wanted to make that like a
- 20:36crucial part of it. Because we don't.
- 20:39And I mean, this kind of really ends up tying back into what we
- 20:43said in our intro about the strikes and how the.
- 20:46Actors and writers and crew members are all very important
- 20:50to the production of a movie because I never would have
- 20:52thought about the animal wranglers on a set before.
- 20:54And here we have a whole movie about them.
- 20:55Yeah, I know. And they were talking about, you
- 20:57know, they this first motion picture that we see.
- 21:02We know the name of the man who put the photos together.
- 21:05We know the name of the horse, but we don't know the name of
- 21:07the jockey. Yeah.
- 21:08And I think that's I I really. I mean, this is just one of the
- 21:13things that I love about Jordan Peele, but I like that he wanted
- 21:17to make that an important detail.
- 21:19Yeah, I do like that he took that piece of history and just
- 21:22kind of built on it, just like craft his own story with it.
- 21:25It is kind of cool to take, like, a little bit of reality
- 21:28and alter it or alter it just enough, but like, make it still
- 21:32plausible. That's it.
- 21:34That's all my fun facts. Okay.
- 21:36All right, So, all right, let's get into our discussion.
- 21:39All right. What do you like about this?
- 21:42Oh, my God. OK, so I am a big Jordan Peele
- 21:48fan because, and you know, we've been fans of Jordan Peele for,
- 21:53like, since comedy. You know what I mean?
- 21:55Like, we've constantly have Campele on in the background,
- 21:58right? And like, even in that you can
- 22:01hear him in all of his work, like you feel that sense of his
- 22:07personality and everything he does feels personal, even in the
- 22:09silly skits, right? And I love that when he like
- 22:15every movie we've seen, regardless of you know, where we
- 22:18would rank him on our list of Jordan Peele movies, like you
- 22:21feel how personal the story is to him and you really get a
- 22:24sense of him in the movie. And there's something about art
- 22:29being so personal that makes it just kind of amazing to witness.
- 22:37And on top of that, this movie being.
- 22:43A bad miracle, so to speak. I, I, I love the sense of all of
- 22:50that together. It feels simultaneously so much
- 22:55bigger than what it is and so much smaller than what it is,
- 22:58all at the same time. And I like that There's a lot of
- 23:01different interpretations to the movie.
- 23:04There's some very clear interpretations that I know a
- 23:06lot of people have talked about about how it's a metaphor for
- 23:09filmmaking. And and just being a a creative
- 23:15in the industry in general. But I I think there's a lot of
- 23:18different ways you could interpret different moments in
- 23:20the movie as well. And I love seeing the monster
- 23:28because it we're watching it and I'm like, my brain was
- 23:36immediately like picturing. Reading a book and having a
- 23:40monster like this described. Because I've been here like this
- 23:43dozens of times where I read a book and there's like a monster
- 23:46or an event described and I'm like trying to picture it in my
- 23:48head. And it's just something so
- 23:49outside the realm of like what I've been able to picture before
- 23:52that like, you know, my brain goes weird places.
- 23:55And watching this on screen feels very much like that.
- 23:59Like it's just something new for my brain to absorb.
- 24:02And I really like that. Yeah.
- 24:03And I just, I don't know. I just think it's a really.
- 24:07Really good movie and I really enjoyed it.
- 24:09It's out there, but at the same time, a lot of the stuff still
- 24:15it it it's not so out there that you are like, well, I don't care
- 24:19about any of this, you know what I mean?
- 24:21Yeah, what about you? I think that it is a very unique
- 24:26approach to an Alien movie. I went in not necessarily
- 24:29knowing that it was going to be about Aliens when we watched it,
- 24:31but I think I kind of had a clue because, you know, everybody was
- 24:35there was like chatter about it online and stuff, so I didn't
- 24:38know exactly what to expect. So like, after we had that fake
- 24:42out where it wasn't those like little tiny dudes whenever he
- 24:45gets pranked and that. Scared the shit out of me in
- 24:48theaters. Yeah, Like, whenever that
- 24:49happened, I was fully on board. I was like, OK, so we're gonna
- 24:51go with this. And I'm liking it, so that's
- 24:53fine. But then it just goes away
- 24:54immediately. And punches one of them and it's
- 24:57a child, yeah. And then ends up being this
- 25:01thing that just like hides in the clouds.
- 25:03And I think that that is just kind of terrifying because I
- 25:08think having like a giant object in the sky that looks like so
- 25:15simple, but this is like something complex about it is
- 25:20just so terrifying to me. Like, you don't fully understand
- 25:23it, but you kind of do. Like it is primal in a way, but
- 25:27like, is it a spaceship? Is it a creature you know?
- 25:29It's hard to tell from the very beginning.
- 25:32Yeah, I think that there are are a lot of super tense scenes in
- 25:39this movie. I think he does like a really
- 25:41good job with the shots of Gordy.
- 25:47Like whenever we get those shots of what happened on the set,
- 25:51those are some of like the most tense moments that I've had.
- 25:55Like even watching it again last night, I was like, my heart was
- 25:58fucking like I could feel it because we knew.
- 26:00What was coming last night? And it's still like that scene
- 26:04when he is hiding underneath the table and Gordy makes eye
- 26:08contact with him and slowly approaches him.
- 26:11I'm like, holy fucking shit, like the tension that builds
- 26:14there. It's just the silence and just
- 26:17fucking chaos. It's so crazy.
- 26:19But you know, he does a good job building those types of moments
- 26:22in this, even with like to chase scenes with the like the alien
- 26:26or like whenever the aliens just kind of like covering above them
- 26:28and stuff like that and they're in their cars or whatever, you
- 26:32know, I I like it. And lastly, I think that the
- 26:36characters are pretty interesting.
- 26:39It's not like a big cast, but I think everybody has like pretty
- 26:44meaningful roles to fill. You got OJ, who is the dude that
- 26:50he takes everything like super seriously and he is like still
- 26:54on board with the whole alien thing.
- 26:55You've got Kiki's character Emerald, who is like guns
- 26:59blazing about everything, who has to be there to kind of
- 27:03motivate him in a way. And then you have Angel, who I I
- 27:09just like him as like a like a character that attacks along.
- 27:12Like, it doesn't seem like the type of dude that would be like
- 27:15a part of that group, because I don't really feel like their
- 27:18personality is necessarily aligned, but I think it meshes
- 27:22well. And then you got like the
- 27:23filmmaker dude who kind of pretentious and I feel like his
- 27:27whole thing is kind of stupid at the end, but that's that's for
- 27:30the next part. I have series on that.
- 27:32No, I really like what you said about Oj's character, about how
- 27:36he's very serious. He wants to get down to
- 27:37business, get things done, but he still believes in aliens and
- 27:40I think that's a really good. Point that you know the two
- 27:42don't have to be mutually exclusive and you know he
- 27:46believes it because he saw it with his own eyes.
- 27:48He didn't spend a ton of time questioning it.
- 27:50He's like, OK, well this is here and now we need to figure out
- 27:52how to deal with it. And then like you said on the
- 27:55other end of it, you've got M who you know, as you said, she's
- 28:00guns a blazing and she's got to motivate him and not necessarily
- 28:03motivate him. You know he's always going to do
- 28:07what needs to be done, but she motivates him to think.
- 28:11Beyond that, yeah. Beyond.
- 28:13Just like accepting it like they want, like their whole motive is
- 28:18like, they wanna get proof of it.
- 28:20Yeah, essentially. And they don't necessarily.
- 28:22I don't really know if they have an end game with that.
- 28:25I think that they're gonna like, cash in on that and try and save
- 28:27the ranch maybe. Well, that's definitely what
- 28:30Oj's end game would be. I think M wants to use that as a
- 28:34stepping stone to, you know, bigger and greater things she
- 28:38wants. Yeah, yeah, there's like some
- 28:40complexity there to that. OK, bad.
- 28:47Bad, I think. I honestly, I don't have a ton
- 28:52of bad for this. I can't think of it like I would
- 28:57never be mad about having more Keith David on screen.
- 29:00That's one of mine, honestly. It was.
- 29:02Such a tease to open with him And then.
- 29:07Ohh. I was so fucking let down in the
- 29:09theater like it's like and Keith Dave and I'm like, fuck yeah, I
- 29:12love Keith David. Like I was so excited for him to
- 29:15be a big part of this movie. And then Jordan feels like,
- 29:18yeah, he's gonna get the quarter 3D.
- 29:19I like he's gonna be gone. Don't get too attached to him.
- 29:25OK, well if you don't really have anything, I'd jot it down a
- 29:27few things here. OK.
- 29:28So all right. The first thing, it's something
- 29:31that I was feeling in the moment last night, but I feel like I
- 29:35while doing research for this, I did a little bit of I had some
- 29:39things brought to light to me that makes it make a little bit
- 29:41more sense. OK, but I wasn't necessarily
- 29:44sure as much as I loved these moments, how the Gordy stuff
- 29:49related to what was going on here.
- 29:51And after doing some reading, I think I figured it out.
- 29:56Jordan Peele never actually gave any, like thoughts on what he
- 30:02was going for with it. But there was like speculation
- 30:04that the whole thing is you can't tame like a predator.
- 30:10Yeah. Like no matter what happens, you
- 30:13can try to maintain a little bit of control, kind of like what
- 30:15you're talking about with 2001. But ultimately they still have
- 30:20those instincts and they're going to, you know, take take
- 30:24over sometimes. And that's exactly what happens
- 30:27with Gordy. He just like is onset doing his
- 30:30normal monkey job and then all of a sudden boom pops and then
- 30:35he snaps. I also think that it serves to
- 30:39be an important point in Joop's character and also helps
- 30:42contrast him with the Haywood's. Because Joop went through this,
- 30:48you know, first hand. He experienced the trauma from
- 30:51that boy that he didn't learn his lesson.
- 30:56Yeah, exactly. Like he kind of shoved that
- 30:58down, and he uses that to make money.
- 30:59He's got his whole macabre Museum of the event.
- 31:03And then he meets this alien, for lack of a better phrasing,
- 31:11and instead of being like, holy shit, this is bigger beyond me,
- 31:15he says. Oh, I bet I can get this
- 31:19creature in the sky. To bend to my will, so fucking
- 31:24and make money off of it. Such a bold take an expectation
- 31:28to think you can get this gigantic flying saucer thing
- 31:31that doesn't have the ability to reason with people.
- 31:34And and then on the other end, we've got OJ&M who want to get
- 31:39proof of it. They want to understand it, they
- 31:42want to share this information. But they also understand that
- 31:45you can't tame a creature like that.
- 31:48Like the best you can do you know is.
- 31:51Enter an agreement and that's a best case scenario.
- 31:55And we even see like, you know, he even makes a comment of like,
- 31:58This is why we don't use chimps because they can't be well
- 32:01trained for a set. You know, he's got a lot of
- 32:03respect for what triggers an animal, sets them off, what a
- 32:06safe working condition is. And he understands ultimately
- 32:09it's up to the animal to behave in a scenario.
- 32:13It's up to them to negotiate the terms and the humans just kind
- 32:17of have to accept that or not. My brain just went like it just
- 32:22all pieced together right there cuz I'm just thinking now about
- 32:26the opening when they are trying to do the screen sets for the
- 32:30horse and he's respectful. And everybody's doing Dicks,
- 32:32Yeah, he. They have like a whole
- 32:35understanding with nature, with the horses, like they're
- 32:37actually good at it. They come to an agreement with
- 32:40each other. And all these people are like,
- 32:42yeah, the horse is just the talent.
- 32:45But no, the horse is a horse, of course.
- 32:48Of course. And like when the person that's
- 32:52trained to work with this horse is saying, hey don't look it in
- 32:55the eye, hey don't make any sudden movements, hey don't
- 32:58stand behind it, maybe listen to it.
- 33:00This is, you know, a several £1000 creature.
- 33:04I'm not sure how much horses weigh.
- 33:06Many hundreds. And it like it can hurt you and
- 33:11you can't. Rationalize with a horse.
- 33:13It lives by a different set of laws than we do.
- 33:16Yeah, that's OK That's cool. I love how deep this movie gets
- 33:20with that stuff right there. Cuz like, I'm just now like
- 33:23processing it here on this episode and it's making sense
- 33:26suddenly. OK, one other thing though, with
- 33:28the fucking standing shoe, did that have it?
- 33:32Like was there any significance with that?
- 33:35I OK, there's a lot of speculation about this online
- 33:38with the shoe. Yeah, OK, cuz like, I didn't
- 33:40know if they were implying that the presence of the alien maybe
- 33:45had something to do with that, or if there was just like some
- 33:48kind of freak event that happened.
- 33:49I think it was a freak event. The phrase bad miracle was used
- 33:53by OJ early on and I think of it like that.
- 33:56You know, we had this whole horrific event.
- 33:59And Dupe is sitting underneath this table and he's staring out
- 34:03at this destruction and he sees the shoe, and he even later has
- 34:06the shoe in a display case in his like that.
- 34:09Yeah. So I think for him it was like a
- 34:11thing that he saw in the moment and held on to and focused on
- 34:16that and none of the rest of the event.
- 34:20It was his bad miracle. OK, that's how I interpret it.
- 34:23I don't know if that's how it was intended.
- 34:25And I've seen there's lots of good discussion about this
- 34:27online, like if you go should dread it.
- 34:29Lots of good discussion and theories.
- 34:31That's the one I personally subscribe to.
- 34:33That makes a lot of sense, honestly.
- 34:35That, I mean, that is a miracle in a very bad situation right
- 34:37there. Yeah, cuz like shit just happens
- 34:39sometimes, you know? Like sometimes things land
- 34:42really weird. And yeah, one other bad that I
- 34:46had, my final one is I don't fucking understand antlers end
- 34:53in the movie. Do you want my theory on that?
- 34:55Well, I again kind of read some things here.
- 34:58He's based off of the dude that maybe like based off of the dude
- 35:03that got those original pictures of the horse.
- 35:06And the whole thing about that guy is he was known for risking
- 35:11his life to get the perfect shot, which is pretty much what
- 35:14he ends up doing. He risks his life to get the
- 35:16perfect shot. But in the process he dies.
- 35:21I think he knows that he's going to die.
- 35:23It's not like getting that footage is going to make any
- 35:25difference because like, nobody's going to recover that.
- 35:29Well, here's my thought. So before he leaves, his final
- 35:33words and we don't deserve the impossible shot.
- 35:35And I wonder if he means that for him specifically.
- 35:38Yeah, but he goes up there, They got the shot.
- 35:40They got all of this footage of Jane jacket.
- 35:43You know, they did what they came to do.
- 35:44But that's not enough for him. He wants to get a shot of the
- 35:47inside of Jane jacket. So he goes in and he gets the
- 35:49shot. You have to remember he has seen
- 35:52the destruction on the ranch. He's seen the wheelchair on the
- 35:54roof. He's seen the keys in the
- 35:56banister. I think that he is assuming his
- 36:00film is going to. Be dropped out as well.
- 36:05So that footage is going to be available.
- 36:07He doesn't deserve the impossible shot.
- 36:09Really, Nobody deserves the impossible shot.
- 36:10But he's gonna go get it anyway and he's gonna hope that it
- 36:13makes its way out. That's my theory, OK?
- 36:16I think that's what was going on in his head, is that that
- 36:18footage will live on. I think that makes sense.
- 36:21So all of my bad things have been debunked upon me, like
- 36:24right, right here. But I stand firmly that Keith
- 36:27David would have been better in this movie for an extended time.
- 36:32There's no change in my mind on that one.
- 36:34OK, ugly. I just generally the way I'm an
- 36:41animal lover. I am not like a preachy vegan,
- 36:45but I am a vegan because I don't like the thought of animals
- 36:48having to exist and maybe endure harsh conditions and eventually
- 36:55die just to sustain us when it isn't necessary.
- 37:00And I'm not, I promise. I'm not trying to turn anybody
- 37:02into a vegan. That's just my own personal
- 37:03philosophy on why I am that. And as much as I love seeing
- 37:08animals on screen, there is like such a delicate ethical line.
- 37:13Like it looks like OJ really cares about his horses, So that
- 37:18makes me feel good. But is every animal Wrangler in
- 37:20Hollywood like that? No, we know Joop isn't.
- 37:24Joop is feeding the horses to the alien.
- 37:25I know that guy. That's so fucked up.
- 37:28We don't ever really touch on that.
- 37:30And you know, just the whole, like, not really respecting that
- 37:33nature is its own thing. Man does not have to control
- 37:37everything. You need to learn to live in
- 37:39agreement with it sometimes, instead of, you know, trying to
- 37:44own everything. Yeah.
- 37:48So that's. I think that's the ugly take
- 37:50away of this maybe, which I think is partially intended.
- 37:54But it does bum me out. Yeah, to build off of that,
- 37:59yeah, part of that whole thing with me is Joop's whole thing
- 38:02with the horses. I think it's really shitty that
- 38:05he whenever he makes the agreement with OJ originally,
- 38:09he's like, yeah, sure, you can buy them back.
- 38:11And like, you can tell he has a little bit of hesitation in his
- 38:13voice, but like he knows full and well that he's going to use
- 38:16that horse to feed it. Well, when you first hear that
- 38:19hesitation, you're like, well, he doesn't think that OJ is
- 38:22going to be able to get the money.
- 38:23Yeah, like you can tell he's just saying it like as a
- 38:26kindness, but not with any real expectation.
- 38:28And then later you're like, Oh no, he knows there's not going
- 38:31to be a horse for him to buy back.
- 38:33Yeah, like he's he's too likable to be like Steven Young is too
- 38:39likable to be this shitty of a character.
- 38:40Honestly, like any because, like, it's hard for me to
- 38:43believe that, but like reading it on paper and just like
- 38:46talking about it like that guy fucking sucks.
- 38:51One other thing, I think that whenever he is giving the like
- 38:58Emerald the tour of all of the memorabilia, he's talking about
- 39:02how entertainment and like SNL and Hollywood, everybody reacted
- 39:07to the tragedy. Yeah, And instead of like
- 39:10respecting it and recognizing that it was a terrible event,
- 39:14they all just went and made fun of it.
- 39:16I like people fucking died and people had like one person had
- 39:19her fucking face eaten. I love that, like him,
- 39:23recounting the SNL skit juxtaposed with a flashback of
- 39:27him sitting under the table, wide eyed, covered in blood.
- 39:30Yeah, it's just like just thinking about it and hearing
- 39:33him describe that Chris Catan playing Gordie, like, come on,
- 39:37man, it's just fucked up. It's ugly, all right?
- 39:43Absurd. Listen, I'm a believer in
- 39:46aliens, so I don't think that's absurd.
- 39:48What I do think is absurd is how easily.
- 39:52And steals large items from other businesses.
- 39:56Oh my God, you're. Right instantly.
- 39:58Well, OK. She she stole 50 wacky waving,
- 40:01inflatable arm flailing 2 men. Yeah, she stole that giant horse
- 40:08and you know, a 50 foot segment of their banner flags.
- 40:14To be fair, Jupe was on to her like he knew what was up.
- 40:17That's where Steven yen being too nice, came in.
- 40:19Because they're like, oh, it's a training horse, he goes.
- 40:22OK. Yeah, Jordan's like, no, you're
- 40:24supposed to be really, really upset in this moment.
- 40:26He's like it's OK Like. But what if I invite them to my
- 40:28ranch instead? Just like, yeah, like, what if
- 40:32what if my character had, like, an event?
- 40:34He was just there to invite them to it.
- 40:36That's three, right? That's that was caused by Steven
- 40:40yen. Yeah.
- 40:40Jordan is like, OK, I guess I'll after a win.
- 40:43Jesse would have done this. Jesse Plemons would have been
- 40:46like yeah, fuck it, give me that back.
- 40:52My absurd is TMZ gets 8 Jean jacket.
- 40:58Looks like a fucking cowboy hat. Oh my God.
- 41:02Yeah. Like, honestly, it's just like a
- 41:04fucking cowboy hat. You know what?
- 41:06Here's the thing too. So when we saw them getting
- 41:10ready for the Star Lasso experience, I said.
- 41:12Oh, his jacket has a UFO. You were?
- 41:14Like, yeah, Did you not notice that?
- 41:16In the theater, I thought it was a cowboy hat on the back of his
- 41:20jacket. Yeah, I mean, I felt.
- 41:21So I didn't make that connection.
- 41:23My God, I'm dumb dumb. Well, I mean it's yeah, I didn't
- 41:27notice it until people pointed it out, so don't feel too bad
- 41:30about it. And my final one is, so the
- 41:35whole thing happened six months before what we follow.
- 41:39So how did OJ not notice his power consistently going in and
- 41:44out and things getting sucked up into the sky for the past six
- 41:47months? So I think, all right, my
- 41:53assumption, this is me going out on a limb.
- 41:56OK, here, climb on out there. So I don't think necessarily
- 42:00stuff was getting sucked up from his ranch because.
- 42:03It all kept happening over at Jupiter's climb.
- 42:08I could contribute to the electricity to him being a
- 42:14Ranger and him going to bed early because he has to wake up
- 42:17early, OK? He does consistently say I got
- 42:20to get up early. I got shit to do.
- 42:21Yeah. Or being out in the barn and not
- 42:24really necessarily paying attention to flower of power
- 42:27flickering. I also think in California that
- 42:30is like a thing that happens. Rolling blackouts are like.
- 42:34A thing, yeah, but the horses all freak out every single time
- 42:36it happens. They all start to act up and run
- 42:39away. Yeah, but think about it with
- 42:41us. Like, if what if we took every
- 42:44single time Talia freaks out about something?
- 42:46I was like, oh, there's a UFO. You know what I mean?
- 42:49Like animals get spooked about that.
- 42:51Well, to be fair, if she was doing it every single time, the
- 42:53power just kind of slowly came in and out like, and it got
- 42:56eerily quiet outside and suddenly I saw little things get
- 43:00sucked up into this guy that maybe believe her.
- 43:03I don't know. It's kind of dramatic.
- 43:06Yeah, that's true. I just, I'm not.
- 43:08I don't necessarily buy that the thing remained quiet that entire
- 43:12time. I also think you have to take
- 43:15into account that he was dealing with a lot of grief from his
- 43:19father passing and then also having to take over the family
- 43:23business which was already not doing great before and his
- 43:25father who was clearly. Super charismatic on top of
- 43:29being knowledgeable. He was building those client
- 43:31bases. Are you just saying he's super
- 43:32charismatic because it's Keith Davis?
- 43:34I mean. That's part of it, but like.
- 43:36You know when he's on set and they're like, where's the senior
- 43:39fella? Like they wanted him back
- 43:41because I think he built better relationships with those studios
- 43:44that they've been familiar. Then OJ, who would much rather
- 43:47talk to the horse than the people, you know, I think he's.
- 43:51In a business that was already struggling and now it's
- 43:54struggling even more, he's had to sell 10 of the horses, which
- 43:56is not only like his livelihood, but it's tied to the memory of
- 44:01his father. I think he just maybe had a lot
- 44:05of shit going on and didn't have time to stop and figure out,
- 44:08like the power flickering, you know?
- 44:10And he could have even attributed animals have grief
- 44:13too, you know, Maybe then maybe he attributed the horses
- 44:15freaking out. So just like the change in
- 44:17routine with Otis senior not being there, I guess you're
- 44:19right, Yeah. I'm not trying to, like, make
- 44:22excuses for this movie. I'm just trying to think of,
- 44:24like, possible reasons that he might not have really paid
- 44:27attention. I think, yeah, they're like
- 44:30there's actual possibilities with what you're saying there.
- 44:32I think that you could be onto something, but still at the same
- 44:35time, OK, what do you give this out of 10?
- 44:41Nine would have been a 9 1/2 without all the horse snacking.
- 44:45OK, yeah. And.
- 44:47And chimp shooting and chimp shooting.
- 44:50OK, I'll give it 8.5 because I agree with you all the way up
- 44:55there. But minus .5 without the Keith
- 44:58David. OK, seriously.
- 45:00Like, just have him stick around.
- 45:02I don't understand. Like, I guess I understand you
- 45:04need to have him lose that father figure, but, like, casts
- 45:06like a nobody. Like, don't get fucking Keith
- 45:08David for that. Yeah, but he's gonna give me
- 45:10blue balls. But what if Keith David was
- 45:13like, hey, Jordan Peele, I would really want to be one in one of
- 45:15your movies one day, but I only have time to shoot one day on
- 45:18set. If you're Jordan Peele, do you
- 45:19not take him up? Yeah, you do.
- 45:21You do. Absolutely you do.
- 45:23But still it pisses me off. OK, we have a starting average
- 45:27of 8.75 Suck it IMDb. So I love the way that the
- 45:32opening credits are done, where we hear the sitcom going on in
- 45:38the background. Yeah, like the audio of like The
- 45:40Gordy Show playing over the production logos.
- 45:42Yeah, I like that. I also like that we see that the
- 45:48motion picture. Of the horse.
- 45:51The horse? Yeah.
- 45:52Fuck. What's this?
- 45:54Gilbert. Don.
- 45:54Yeah, And we see it through the mouth of Jean Jacket.
- 45:59Yeah, that's that's kind of crazy how you get like an early
- 46:02glimpse of it right there. Yeah.
- 46:04Which you wouldn't know, that's what that is until your second
- 46:06time viewing. Yeah, exactly.
- 46:07Yeah. And then we, you know, the
- 46:09sitcom changes from normal sitcom stuff.
- 46:11We hear a pop and then there's a lot of screaming and crying and
- 46:15general sounds of chaos and destruction.
- 46:17This is a strong opening, honestly.
- 46:18Like it grabs your attention right away.
- 46:20Yeah, and then we cut to a standing shoe.
- 46:25No, we cut to I will cast, I will cast abominable filth at
- 46:29you, make you viral and make you a spectable.
- 46:32Nam 36. Yes.
- 46:34Then we see the upright shoe. OK.
- 46:36Torn, upset and a bloody chimp. Yeah, that.
- 46:41It's just super unsettling imagery right there.
- 46:43Like it? I don't know.
- 46:45Just like starting the movie off with that.
- 46:46Like, even though this isn't really the main thing, like I I
- 46:48just think it's like a strong way to grab your attention and
- 46:50be like, OK, now watch this movie.
- 46:53Yeah, exactly. So now we cut to at the ranch
- 46:58with horses. Get Keith David.
- 47:00He is working with the horse. Yeah, he's trying to break it,
- 47:04so to speak. Yeah, they're talking about
- 47:05trying to, like, nail the movie that they're trying to pitch.
- 47:09Yeah, because if they get it, then they also get the sequel.
- 47:11And yeah, this could save the ranch.
- 47:13Yeah, but then suddenly cell phone and all electronics
- 47:19stopped working. Yeah, and not like loose signal
- 47:22like his phone powers down as we did to Talia after watching this
- 47:26movie. It just like do that to your
- 47:31dog. If you have dogs, by the way,
- 47:33they fucking hate it. Yeah, she got really mad and
- 47:35ironically attacked her monkey toy.
- 47:38Yeah, Gordy, this is fucking Gordy's fault.
- 47:42So yeah, there's they hear like screaming in the sky.
- 47:45I also think it's really important that while they're
- 47:47like feeding the horses and stuff you can hear on the radio
- 47:49them talking about two hikers are missing in Agua Dulce.
- 47:53Oh shit, that didn't understand. Yeah.
- 47:55Wow. So then you hear screaming and
- 47:59they kind of like look up at the sky and stuff starts falling.
- 48:02There's like, there's keys and coins and other stuff, and one
- 48:06of those coins happens to go right through the eyeball of 1.
- 48:09Mr. Keith David. Yeah, Well, yeah.
- 48:12You just see him slump over and then the horse starts to walk
- 48:14away. Yeah, and he falls off.
- 48:17So OJ is saying to the hospital, trying to get him to talk to him
- 48:20in the truck, like naming the horses.
- 48:22The horses, Yeah. Yeah.
- 48:23That's so fucking sad. Yeah.
- 48:25You feel so bad for him in that moment, Yeah.
- 48:27And then he gets to the hospital and he's pronounced dead.
- 48:30Yeah. And then you just see like the
- 48:31cut in his eye with the X-ray of a coin all the way, like halfway
- 48:35through his head. Yeah.
- 48:36And we don't even hear the pronouncement.
- 48:37You just know that that's what's happened.
- 48:39I mean, you're not gonna fucking survive.
- 48:41Yeah, it's like right in your brain.
- 48:43And then we see when he gets back to the barn, the horse that
- 48:49he was breaking has a key stuck in a tiny quarter.
- 48:52Yeah, sticking straight out. So OJ is on the set of a Western
- 48:57with a horse. Yeah, I guess I feel so bad for
- 49:12him in this moment. This is six months later.
- 49:00The crew really wanted Otis Senior to be there, but they
- 49:04kind of like stage whisper to each other right in front of OJ.
- 49:07He's dead, you. Like you can tell, he's super
- 49:14uncomfortable because this is not his role usually.
- 49:17He likes working with the horse, like here's some other people
- 49:19person. Yeah, well, and not everybody
- 49:21wants to be like the head of the company, You know what I mean?
- 49:24It just happened that he's here. He's saying that he's waiting
- 49:26for his sister. She's late.
- 49:28You get the impression that this isn't the first time she's been
- 49:30late. Yeah.
- 49:30He figures she can handle the charisma piece of it.
- 49:33And he'll handle, like the horse part.
- 49:35Yeah. Yeah.
- 49:36Which seems like it would be a good.
- 49:39You know, set up if she would show up on time and not promote
- 49:42her own stuff while she's supposed to be doing the safety
- 49:44meeting. Yeah, much like Ken, whose job
- 49:46is Beach, his job is horse. Exactly.
- 49:49His job is horse. Yes, Horse.
- 49:54So he starts to, like, give his speech, but he's doing like a
- 49:58really terrible job. And then suddenly Emerald shows
- 50:02up just in time. Wait.
- 50:04And she gives her. Very charismatic monologue,
- 50:09which? I want to see all of the other
- 50:11cuts of that. I want to see the other 13 cuts.
- 50:14I would love if he had that as a special feature.
- 50:16I don't know if it I don't. We don't own it on disk,
- 50:18unfortunately. That's one thing.
- 50:21We need to own it. We do.
- 50:22But this is a thing that I told somebody on Twitter yesterday.
- 50:26Like the cover fucking drives me crazy because the top.
- 50:29You know how they all on the KSA 4K Ultra HD?
- 50:32Well then, like the little cover flap boy also says 4K Ultra HD,
- 50:36so you get 4K4K. Like it's just too noisy.
- 50:39It drives me fucking crazy. Whatever.
- 50:42You ever fucking know? Sorry.
- 50:45All right, so. And no one likes you, Jacob.
- 50:48Okay, okay. Let's go, let's go.
- 50:50I know I'm learning this is not super relevant to what we're
- 50:54talking about here. So she gives the whole
- 50:56presentation about how they are the great great.
- 50:59She misspeaks by the way. She says that they are the
- 51:02great, great dissonance of them. And she says.
- 51:04And one more great, Does she? Yeah, okay.
- 51:07So I missed that. So Okay.
- 51:08They're the three times great grandchildren of the original
- 51:12motion picture actor. Bahamian named Alistair Haywood.
- 51:17Yes, and yeah, they're part of royalty.
- 51:20And then she starts to, like, plug her own shit too.
- 51:23Yeah, at the I do. Like that, She says.
- 51:24They're currently the only black-owned animal wrangling
- 51:28company in Hollywood at the time.
- 51:30I mean that would be. I mean that's a good thing for
- 51:32business. Like it's.
- 51:33Really important to tie into, you know, the history of why
- 51:37they started the company in the 1st place.
- 51:39I think I get why that's the spiel of Hollywood horses.
- 51:43That's like such a cool thing. Like I could work with the the
- 51:47descendants of the people that were part of like motion picture
- 51:50history, like the very first people.
- 51:51In their blood. Yeah, it's so cool.
- 51:53Like I would hire them 100% and they're so she finishes her
- 51:59whole thing and then they want to cut to a screen test
- 52:02immediately. Meanwhile, OJ is saying think
- 52:04the horse needs a break, but he's so quiet about it that
- 52:07nobody hears him and they just really don't care either.
- 52:10Yeah, like again, he is. He's correct.
- 52:15But because he is not speaking with any amount of confidence,
- 52:19it's not getting through to them.
- 52:20Yeah, he's just mumbling too. And I'm not blaming him for them
- 52:23not listening to him, but it is also very frustrating because
- 52:26he's like and I'm. I have a problem with this too,
- 52:30like in my professional life where I.
- 52:32Am very deferential in times where I don't need to be because
- 52:36I know my shit and I need to sometimes just like own that I
- 52:39know my shit well. So I really feel for OJ in this
- 52:42moment. I don't.
- 52:43I've never seen speculation about this, but I remember we
- 52:46were listening to the Dead Meat episode where they are doing
- 52:48Survivor and he was one of the characters, but apparently
- 52:51there's speculation that he's autistic.
- 52:53Oh, I think so. I may be misspeaking with that,
- 52:57but I think that that's what they talked about there.
- 52:59They think that he may be on the spectrum.
- 53:02I could see how some people could make that assumption.
- 53:08And I mean, maybe it's possible, maybe not.
- 53:11I think he just works with horses and likes horses better
- 53:13than people. Yeah, he's just not very good
- 53:15with, like, social. Yeah, cuz like people will point
- 53:17to like him not doing eye contact a lot.
- 53:19He does eye contact with his sister all the time.
- 53:22I think he's just used to. He's around horses.
- 53:24You don't make eye contact with horses because that's
- 53:26aggressive. I think he does the same thing
- 53:27with strangers. Yeah, like it saves his life
- 53:30later on. Yeah, like don't look at the
- 53:32fucking things. They won't hurt you if you don't
- 53:34look at them. Yeah.
- 53:36So I mean, whether or not his character is on the autism
- 53:40spectrum at all, I ultimately think, like, the outcome of the
- 53:46movie is the same. Yeah, True.
- 53:48Yeah. It doesn't affect anything.
- 53:49It's just like kind of just giving like layers to the
- 53:51character, potentially. Yeah, speculations, all of
- 53:54those. So yeah, he's trying to, like,
- 53:57get Emerald to maybe help, but she's over there, like over at
- 54:01the Craft section. She's on the other side of the
- 54:03studio, yeah, Yeah, and. They talked about his dead dad
- 54:08in front of him, louder than he is, like calling for his sister.
- 54:11Yeah, I feel so, so bad for him here.
- 54:14So the actor gets on there and she, like, touches the horse.
- 54:19And he's like don't touch her and this causes.
- 54:22So offended. She's like, don't spread, Yeah.
- 54:24And then they take like a crystal, like a mirror ball or
- 54:26something and put it in front of the horse.
- 54:27I don't know what they're doing with that.
- 54:29Yeah, I'm not 100% sure what it is.
- 54:34But they put it right in front of the horse's face and the
- 54:36mirror Spooks him so he kicks. I think they're doing some sort
- 54:32of a lighting check or? Luckily, doesn't hit anybody
- 54:40but. You know, they do all get fired,
- 54:42yeah. It's enough for them to not plan
- 54:44the part, so and. Then they carry in this shitty
- 54:47like 3D horse and they're gonna just VFX ohh fake horse.
- 54:51Then there's one thing about this movie too.
- 54:55Whenever we do see Gordy, he does not look very good, even
- 54:58for a 2022. Movie They won't let you use
- 55:00chimps on set? No, we've.
- 55:02Discussed this they had to do he like did the movements and then
- 55:05they see GI it over top of him. Oh my God, please tell me it's
- 55:09it's Johnny Circus. OK.
- 55:12We had two different, like, people.
- 55:13I could see Sean Gunn being totally could have been Sean
- 55:19Gunn. You're right, man.
- 55:20That would have been perfect. OK, so Emeril's gonna stay with
- 55:25OJ at least through the night. And she's like, can we have fun?
- 55:28OJ, though? And OJ is not fun, man.
- 55:31Oj's all worried. He's the one.
- 55:33He's had like the whole responsibility of taking care of
- 55:36the ranches scenes. She to her.
- 55:39It's her side. Shit, she says.
- 55:40Yeah, yeah. And they talk about that cuz
- 55:42they stop at Jupiter's claim. She's like what happened in Gold
- 55:44Rush and he's like Gold Rush was closed down three years ago and
- 55:48this came in. So you can get the sense that
- 55:50even though maybe she was still involved in the family company,
- 55:53maybe she hasn't really been very handson in a while.
- 55:55Yeah. And I think we get a little bit
- 55:58of a hint of that later why that may have happened, but we'll
- 56:02talk about that in a bit. So he is selling lucky.
- 56:06And he wants to buy him back also.
- 56:10I do feel like it's important we hear like a little overhead
- 56:12announcement saying like starting this Friday at 5:30 PM
- 56:15join us each week for the new Star lasso experience.
- 56:19So they do start like the bread crumbs of that early on, OK.
- 56:23So like whenever we see that later on, that was the very
- 56:26first showing, yes. OK.
- 56:29So. You know, he does kind of call
- 56:32out and about being a liability and like always plugging her
- 56:35side shit. And like you said, she was like,
- 56:37well, this is my side, yeah, my other stuff's my main stuff.
- 56:40Which, I mean, I totally understand where he's coming
- 56:42from because, like, the fucking business is on the line.
- 56:45I get where she's coming from, too.
- 56:46I get it. I get where both of them are
- 56:48coming from because, like, she wants to pursue her own things.
- 56:51Yeah, she doesn't want to be tethered to this because it's
- 56:53her family business. Well, and The thing is, she
- 56:55wasn't fully brought into the family business in the same way
- 56:58that OJ was. Yeah, she kind of got excluded.
- 57:00Yeah, she's. Gotten pushed to the side from
- 57:02from her dad, and I think there's a lot of like, you know,
- 57:05so she started distancing herself and now that her dad's
- 57:07gone, it's her brother. But there's still like some hard
- 57:10feelings there and I think. It really makes sense for her.
- 57:13I don't think she necessarily holds it against him because he
- 57:16was the only one that seemed to include her in the entire
- 57:19things. But yeah, that's not super
- 57:21important. I love their sibling
- 57:22relationship. It's yeah, it feels, I know it
- 57:25feels super, super real. They have great chemistry.
- 57:27I found out that Keke Palmer and Daniel Kaluuya were actually
- 57:30siblings and were like, yeah, that makes sense.
- 57:32Yeah, .100%. Yeah, so while they're in there,
- 57:37like she keeps interrupting their discussion.
- 57:41Asking cuz she was like kid sheriff.
- 57:43I love that show and she's like trying to talk to him cuz
- 57:45Jupiter is a grown up child actor.
- 57:47Yeah. And then she sees the picture of
- 57:50Gordy. So the Matv cover of the
- 57:54incident, which is super fucking poor taste.
- 57:57That was the episode that he flipped out on.
- 58:00They were filming his birthday episode.
- 58:02Yeah, So, yeah, they. He shows them it's like a hidden
- 58:07room. Museum.
- 58:08Yeah, and it's like all of the nasty stuff.
- 58:10And he charges tourist money to stay in there overnight.
- 58:14The whole thing is just very dark and fully believable that
- 58:19that would be a thing I read. I didn't catch it myself, but if
- 58:22you look on his desk you can see a giant pair of scissors from
- 58:25us. On there.
- 58:27Yeah, I think that's a kind of cool little detail there.
- 58:30We get a little flashback of like Joop kind of scared hiding
- 58:34during this whole thing. So yeah, he's like telling that
- 58:35story and it's like juxtaposed of him actually, in fear not
- 58:39enjoying the moment, it's revealed that Joop has offered
- 58:43to buy the ranch. Yeah.
- 58:45And and was like how much And he was like, doesn't matter.
- 58:48And she's like how much he's like doesn't matter, doesn't
- 58:50matter. Why do you care so much?
- 58:52She's like, I'm trying to figure out how stupid you are and he's
- 58:53like probably real stupid. So it sounds like it's a lot of
- 58:56money, yeah. So she's like, I got, he's like,
- 59:00I gotta work because she's asking what they want to do.
- 59:03And she was like, you tell me you don't want to pop into Pop's
- 59:08liquor cabinet. And he was like, well, I was
- 59:10thinking about the hobby weed, Hobby weed.
- 59:12Maybe. I like that it's the hobby.
- 59:15Not for like, serious shit, but you know, this is my fun time
- 59:18weed right here. Well, I mean, it is legal in
- 59:21California. Maybe that's like a side
- 59:23business. Maybe they sold business weed.
- 59:25Hobby weed, You know, maybe. I guess that could be a thing.
- 59:27Yeah, so they're inside and they're just, you know, talking
- 59:30together, reminiscing. They talk about Jean Jacket.
- 59:32And this is, yeah, where it was supposed to be.
- 59:36Her first horse to train. It was going to be her 9th
- 59:38birthday gift. And then they got a job and I
- 59:43was gonna work on Scorpion King. Yeah, which I've not seen that
- 59:46movie. I can't verify if horses are
- 59:48actually in that movie, but I think it would be hilarious if
- 59:51they listed movies that did not feature horses.
- 59:53Well, no, he said. The horse ended up getting
- 59:54replaced anyway. OK, so did they did like CGI or
- 59:57something I guess? No, like they're just were no
- 59:59horses. Oh.
- 1:00:01Yeah. Oh, OK.
- 1:00:02That's funny. OK.
- 1:00:03I've seen the movie at least once.
- 1:00:04My home's a big. Dwayne Duany.
- 1:00:07Duany Johnson fan. I I can attest.
- 1:00:12I've heard her speak of him many times.
- 1:00:15So yeah, we we have watched it at least once, but I don't
- 1:00:17remember very much from it. OK.
- 1:00:20But yeah, so and she was like, you know, I watched you and Dad
- 1:00:24out there training my horse and he didn't look up at me once,
- 1:00:27but you did he? Did like the little scene and I
- 1:00:30was like, I'm watching you. Yeah, they'll meet the parents.
- 1:00:33Yeah, so they noticed that Ghost is in the arena.
- 1:00:37Yeah, so OJ goes to go check him out, but then as he goes out
- 1:00:40there, Ghost runs off. And and plays really fucking
- 1:00:44loud music. What is their speaker situation?
- 1:00:47I know like it has reached and she can fucking hear him in the
- 1:00:51house too. She definitely strikes me as the
- 1:00:55type of person that plays really loud music but can somehow still
- 1:00:57hear other things like. And he can hear her.
- 1:00:59That's a type of person. It really is and it.
- 1:01:02I'm not, that's. Perfect sense.
- 1:01:04For I'm not that person, No. If I need to concentrate, I turn
- 1:01:07the music all the way down. It's the classic thing of you're
- 1:01:12lost and for some reason you think turning.
- 1:01:14No, it does. It does.
- 1:01:16It helps me concentrate. I do that.
- 1:01:20So OJ gets in his little golf cart and follows.
- 1:01:23Golf. Cart.
- 1:01:24And they get near this like Gulch, and they can hear the
- 1:01:28rehearsals going on for the Star Lasso experience and that's when
- 1:01:32we get like a power outage at the main house.
- 1:01:35Oh shit. So he was summoning it.
- 1:01:37Yeah, he was. He was practicing.
- 1:01:39Yeah. I didn't make that connection
- 1:01:40before. Shit.
- 1:01:43Then we hear screams. And then we see some movement in
- 1:01:47the clouds. Those screams are terrifying.
- 1:01:49You just look up in the clouds and you just hear people
- 1:01:52shouting. Yeah, it's like gives me
- 1:01:55shivers. So back at the house, OJ asked
- 1:01:58them about bad miracles and she's like, what do you mean?
- 1:02:02And. I was like, what the fuck did
- 1:02:04you see out there? Yeah, and he just, like, gives
- 1:02:05it to her stray. He's like, I saw something in
- 1:02:08the clouds. Yeah, so naturally she wants to
- 1:02:11sell photographic evidence of UFO.
- 1:02:14One website she founds will buy that for 50 to 100K and she was
- 1:02:20like, but maybe we need to think longer term.
- 1:02:21Maybe we need to think about more than just like a single
- 1:02:23photo. And I I love out of all of the
- 1:02:28character details we get. I.
- 1:02:30Love that OJ is an Oprah fan. I know, right?
- 1:02:33Is it Oprah worthy? Like, it's not Oprah, though.
- 1:02:35Not even just in, like. It doesn't even feel casual.
- 1:02:38Like, OK, everybody knows who Oprah is because she's fucking
- 1:02:41Oprah. But like.
- 1:02:42He knows like what criteria is needed it.
- 1:02:45Just breaks midday to like catch Oprah when it was still on the
- 1:02:49air when he. Says I gotta wake up.
- 1:02:51I've got shit to do in the morning.
- 1:02:52It's to watch Oprah. It's not take care of the
- 1:02:54horses. I also like the detail here.
- 1:02:57He's talking about how they gave an explanation about what may
- 1:03:01have killed Otis before. They said it was a prop plane
- 1:03:04that killed him. Yeah, but he never really bought
- 1:03:06it. Never, like, made the connection
- 1:03:08about how that could have been. How could that have fucking
- 1:03:11happened? Yeah, exactly.
- 1:03:13Oh, that's just one of those that they didn't know how else
- 1:03:14to explain it. So, like, oh, good weird things
- 1:03:16happen. Yeah, that's what it is.
- 1:03:19Angel ends up talking. Also, I just.
- 1:03:23I got a. Shout out to my girl Keke Palmer
- 1:03:26once again, Emeril just casually throwing some Sour Patch Kids
- 1:03:32and her because I do like, I totally do that at like Big
- 1:03:36Lots. I will get the candy on the way
- 1:03:38to the. Shack.
- 1:03:39Just like in the middle of the aisle.
- 1:03:40Just like, yeah, fucking throw it in there.
- 1:03:41Like. Those random candy house where
- 1:03:43you're like, what does this have to do with electronics?
- 1:03:45It has nothing to do with electronics.
- 1:03:47It has to do with people like me who if I'm spending $1000 on
- 1:03:50some equipment, I will spend the extra $3 markup for my big bag
- 1:03:54of sour. We put you.
- 1:03:55This is, this is one of the most realistic cinematic depictions
- 1:04:00of a store. Because like, I'm OJ in this
- 1:04:03situation, I'm walking with you in the store.
- 1:04:05We're walking down there. You grab Sour Patch Kids and
- 1:04:08throw it in there. Then we walk by random
- 1:04:10compliment to a person. They usually compliment you
- 1:04:13about your hair. Oh my God, you look so beautiful
- 1:04:15with your hair. And I'm always there with that.
- 1:04:17And then we go to go check out with a guy.
- 1:04:19He's like, yeah, So what the fuck can I do for you today?
- 1:04:22That's so fucking real. Like the whole thing, like this
- 1:04:25whole thing is so relatable. But I love the energy that Angel
- 1:04:29brings here, cuz he's just like, yeah, so do you want the credit
- 1:04:32card? And they're like, no, not at
- 1:04:33all. And he does not.
- 1:04:35He just. Want the expert install?
- 1:04:37And they're like, no, no, cuz in their heads they're like, well,
- 1:04:40it can't be that hard. And also we're trying to keep
- 1:04:42the secret. He goes, all right, cool, no
- 1:04:44expert technician installation and OJ goes, well, is it hard?
- 1:04:49He's like, not for me. Yeah, Boom.
- 1:04:52Yeah, honestly, it worked. That's a good sell, right?
- 1:04:53Mmhmm. And then he kind of like,
- 1:04:56speculates as alien shit. And they're like, yeah, nobody
- 1:04:59believes that. And then I think the way that
- 1:05:00they respond to that, he's like, OK, I think they know something.
- 1:05:04Yeah. So while he's there, he was
- 1:05:06like, sorry I was rude earlier. I just got out of a four year
- 1:05:09relationship. She got a role on The CW.
- 1:05:12Yeah, fucking CW. So that even adds more into what
- 1:05:16I was saying earlier about him being a jaded LA person like.
- 1:05:20This is. Longterm relationship broke up
- 1:05:22with him because she is living her dream and he is not.
- 1:05:26They they described his transition to the movie.
- 1:05:29He starts out as like a little emo character and then as the
- 1:05:33movie progresses, he kind of aligns with them and gets more
- 1:05:35like bright colored outfits. Oh, I was gonna say becomes more
- 1:05:38of a nerd A. Little bit that too, yeah.
- 1:05:41More of like his original character.
- 1:05:43But yeah, he kind of like gets more happy because he's like
- 1:05:46doing the things that he actually enjoys.
- 1:05:47He's. A fucking nerd.
- 1:05:49Fucking nerd he is. Yeah, listen, Nerd is not
- 1:05:52derogatory on this show, even when we use it in a James Franco
- 1:05:59Danny McBride fucking nerd, he says.
- 1:06:02Ufo's are now called Uap's after the declassified footage.
- 1:06:07They wanted to make people not. Yeah, you you looked at me
- 1:06:10because we've had this. Conversation so many times.
- 1:06:12Recently. Well, I think it's even crazy
- 1:06:14how more relevant it is now because like they've actually
- 1:06:16had like just like a couple weeks ago, they had the whole
- 1:06:19discussion with Congress. About it.
- 1:06:21They're making actual It's not just like they released the
- 1:06:26footage and now they're like actually talking about it and
- 1:06:28maybe trying to do something about it.
- 1:06:30I don't know. It is it's they are unidentified
- 1:06:34objects. We don't necessarily know what
- 1:06:36they are. It's actual footage.
- 1:06:37It's really shitty footage, but it's footage.
- 1:06:39It's not Oprah, though. So M says she has to dispute
- 1:06:42she's got an errand. When she pops back, that errand
- 1:06:45was getting a training horse. And I, like, has followed her.
- 1:06:49I like whenever she brings back she's like got a couple of
- 1:06:52strong men that can help me and she's like, she's like, what the
- 1:06:56fuck are you doing? Like like the whole, like
- 1:06:58approach to that right there. Like he's just like so no
- 1:07:01nonsense with it. But yeah, then then Joop, nice
- 1:07:05guy Steven Young shows up and he's like, hey, I noticed you
- 1:07:08stole my horses and. She's like, Nah, that's our
- 1:07:10horse. And he's like, oh.
- 1:07:13Do you want to come to my show? I like how they don't even give
- 1:07:15him a knock, like an opportunity to ask the question like he
- 1:07:18starts is like, So what are you like?
- 1:07:19So what are you doing? Yeah, well cuz they're so far
- 1:07:22away too, they're probably a full 100 yards apart.
- 1:07:25Yeah, and like he pulls up and he's like not on their property
- 1:07:28yet. They won't let him in.
- 1:07:29I stay right there. Yeah, and like, yeah, you can
- 1:07:32stay right there and we'll chat. I love how Angel keeps trying
- 1:07:36to, like, inject himself to he's like, alright, that's that's all
- 1:07:38goodbye. Like shut the fuck up.
- 1:07:40This is your place. So I'm just trying to help.
- 1:07:42He like inserts himself into their lives so immediately.
- 1:07:47Yeah, like he does it in such a way that is like, it's kind of
- 1:07:51annoying but also endearing. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:07:56So yeah, so he invites them to his show, which will be I can't
- 1:08:01remember when. That Friday.
- 1:08:02That Friday at 5:30, OK. Um, so they have the camera set
- 1:08:07up, they've got them far enough apart that hopefully if there is
- 1:08:10an outage in one area, it won't affect the other, which I think
- 1:08:14is smart. Yeah.
- 1:08:16He's like and I can keep an eye on it remotely and they're like,
- 1:08:19no thank you, Which, yeah, what a creepy fucking thing to offer.
- 1:08:23That's terrifying. That's the reason I would never
- 1:08:25want somebody to come and saw cameras in our house.
- 1:08:28Yeah, well, he does not listen to that.
- 1:08:30He's still. Continues to monitor exactly.
- 1:08:32That's why you don't get the expert installation right there.
- 1:08:36So Oj's like, well, back to work and he this.
- 1:08:40God, he's really fucking good at his job of horse.
- 1:08:43Because, yeah, he. Gets a little mirror ball and
- 1:08:47like, he was like, OK, well this is new equipment I've never seen
- 1:08:49on set before, so we've never known to train the horses with
- 1:08:51it before. Now we know.
- 1:08:53So we're going to practice mirror ball and I'm going to
- 1:08:55continue being really good at horse.
- 1:08:57Yeah, I I I like that too. He's adapting.
- 1:09:01So there are lights on in the stable and he's like, well
- 1:09:03that's weird. So he shuts him off, but then
- 1:09:06they come back on and then fucking.
- 1:09:10Creature rises up from the shadows.
- 1:09:12Dude, the way the thing like rises up, it's like a little
- 1:09:16silhouette, but it just kind of like shimmies out a little bit
- 1:09:19and it's like, what the fuck is that thing?
- 1:09:20Because it's like so weird and oblong looking.
- 1:09:23This is a very fucking terrifying scene.
- 1:09:25Even though it's like played for like, I mean, it's played for
- 1:09:27like to be spooky here, but it ends up being kind of like a
- 1:09:30laugh type thing, yeah. Well, that and that's was really
- 1:09:33great again. I think comedians make really
- 1:09:35great horror directors because they know how to like, do the
- 1:09:38peaks and valleys. Yeah, exactly.
- 1:09:40Yeah. And this is a perfect example of
- 1:09:42that because the tension gets ratcheted up so high in about 45
- 1:09:46seconds and ends with Daniel Kaluuya punching a 12 year old
- 1:09:50in the face. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:09:54It's just it's really insane and it really what it is, it's it's
- 1:09:58dupes kids. In alien costumes.
- 1:10:00But you're like, well, that's kind of weird.
- 1:10:01When did they choose aliens? We'll find out soon enough.
- 1:10:04Well, and I think it's funny, they're like, why the fuck were
- 1:10:07they doing that? And he's like, well, you did
- 1:10:09steal their horses and she's like, oh, OK, yeah.
- 1:10:11She already forgot. Yeah, he's like they let Clover
- 1:10:15out, so now he's got to find Clover.
- 1:10:18Angela is watching the cameras remotely while Em watches
- 1:10:23camera. A I think no camera B.
- 1:10:26Camera B Yeah. And a praying mantis appears.
- 1:10:28And that's just. Also terrifying because whenever
- 1:10:31you see like a giant bug on your screen for like the first
- 1:10:34second, it's kind of scary. It's like that.
- 1:10:36I think you should leave bit where like the thing walks
- 1:10:38through the doggy door for like 5 seconds I.
- 1:10:42Like, I questioned everything I knew.
- 1:10:44Because that fucking thing exists.
- 1:10:47Exactly. That was exactly what happened
- 1:10:49whenever you saw that thing on the camera.
- 1:10:51Oh my. God.
- 1:10:57Yeah, and of course. Fucking Angel, calls Emerald.
- 1:11:01And he's like, there's a bug on camera B and she's like, what
- 1:11:04the fuck? And he goes, camera A is down.
- 1:11:06She's like, I'm aware, why are you aware?
- 1:11:09And he's like. Because there's something
- 1:11:11happening, the camera's down. You need to get.
- 1:11:13The bug off. He's so fucking invested that he
- 1:11:16stayed past the store being shut down like all of the lights are
- 1:11:19off. He's he's there and like one
- 1:11:20other random coworkers, just like eating Cheetos.
- 1:11:23Girl eating the Hot Cheetos, which?
- 1:11:24Drove me nuts because listen, Hot Cheetos are delicious.
- 1:11:27Can't have them anymore, so they're not vegan.
- 1:11:29But she's eating the Hot Cheetos and stock and shit, You know,
- 1:11:33she's getting Cheeto Fingers. All.
- 1:11:35Over. Yeah, that's gross.
- 1:11:38God, I had to clean up my nephew after he ate a bag of Cheetos
- 1:11:42yesterday and I was cleaning it from his head.
- 1:11:45I was from his fingers, from his neck rolls.
- 1:11:49Hopefully she wasn't eating it like a toddler and rubbing it
- 1:11:51all over so OJ goes to get. Quover and then the power dies.
- 1:11:56There's like, well, OJ's out there.
- 1:11:59There's like this big pillar of dust and it almost looks like a
- 1:12:04twister. Except not really.
- 1:12:05No, that's the thing. Like, I would have thought that
- 1:12:07that was just like a fucking tornado.
- 1:12:09Or like a what a dust devil. It wasn't moving the way that
- 1:12:12type of stuff normally does, though.
- 1:12:14No, I just see like a giant pillar of dust.
- 1:12:16I'm freaking out though. Yeah, and like, it sucks up the
- 1:12:19training horse and the flags. And so OJ goes.
- 1:12:24Running Clover goes running, OJ hides in the barn, and it looks
- 1:12:31like maybe unfortunately, Clover got eaten.
- 1:12:34I don't. I couldn't tell, honestly.
- 1:12:36I thought the I thought the Clover made it safe because I
- 1:12:39don't think the horses. So the only reason that the
- 1:12:42decoy got sucked up is because it's looking up into the sky.
- 1:12:45I think the Quova is looking down because.
- 1:12:47We saw like a horse run into the barn, but then we also saw like
- 1:12:51a horse getting spooked outside. So I don't know what happened.
- 1:12:53I'm sorry, Tally's freaking out because there was an Amazon
- 1:12:55delivery. Like we're just gonna.
- 1:12:57And they. Lost it?
- 1:12:58Yeah, we've already paused this for a full 10 minutes and it's
- 1:13:01just not. She's just barking.
- 1:13:04Yeah, OK. Yeah.
- 1:13:06So M is like on the roof throwing candy at the sour.
- 1:13:12Patch because I hope you can like Sour Patch because and the
- 1:13:14brain mess is like, yes I do. Thank you.
- 1:13:16You know what, I relate if I was.
- 1:13:18The brain miss I'm like. You're throwing Sour Patch
- 1:13:20because of me as hell. Yeah, please.
- 1:13:22Continue. So the M like, after all of
- 1:13:26this, they're in the house and she's like, I want to leave this
- 1:13:29is this is not worth it. None of this is worth it.
- 1:13:31We're in danger here and I like that.
- 1:13:34That's like because. I think they try and play it off
- 1:13:38like she's really immature, but she's not.
- 1:13:41She's just, you know, decided to focus on her own life after it
- 1:13:45was very clear she was never going to be a priority in the
- 1:13:47family business and she didn't deal with shit with her dad and
- 1:13:53her and her brother have grown apart a little bit because of
- 1:13:55it, and she's just got a very different kind of personality to
- 1:13:58him. And I think it's really easy to
- 1:13:59read some of that. As being immature.
- 1:14:01But she's not. Because, especially with her
- 1:14:04reaction, being like this is not worth our lives, OJ doesn't
- 1:14:08think it's gonna come back tonight, so he thinks they're
- 1:14:10safer tonight. Yeah, cuz it's not hungry
- 1:14:12anymore. So there's a flashback with his
- 1:14:14dad saying that cuz he's talking about ghosts freaking out.
- 1:14:18They can hear him in the arena and he's like some animals ain't
- 1:14:21fit to be trained. Boom, cut to Crest they call
- 1:14:27antlers hoist. Because they he and.
- 1:14:34He was the dude that was doing on set.
- 1:14:35Yeah, they were, yeah. They were pitching like their
- 1:14:38horses for his movie at the beginning of the movie.
- 1:14:40Yeah, so they are looking for the impossible shot and he is
- 1:14:45intrigued, but also doesn't really believe them.
- 1:14:50So he hangs up, Angel shows up and he's like, holy shit, it's
- 1:14:54real. And they're like, what?
- 1:14:56The fuck. Yeah, like you're still looking
- 1:14:58at our shit. And then he shows them footage
- 1:15:01like he replays it time lapse and there is one cloud that does
- 1:15:05not move. Just stay stationary the entire
- 1:15:07time. And it's very eerie to watch.
- 1:15:09It feels like one of those spooky YouTube compilations.
- 1:15:12We. Watch.
- 1:15:13That's like one of those things that easy to fake.
- 1:15:16But you know, seeing it in person, like, that's gotta be
- 1:15:18super freaky. Yeah.
- 1:15:21So now we get a nice little flashback to what happened with
- 1:15:24Gordy. Yep, back to Gordy.
- 1:15:25Uh, huh. It's a Season 2 episode, so
- 1:15:27presumably they've gotten very complacent with having
- 1:15:31chimpanzees on sets. I think that's like a neat
- 1:15:34little detail that they throw in and they don't hit you on the
- 1:15:36face with. But like, that this happened in
- 1:15:37Season 2 feels kind of important.
- 1:15:40Yeah, so it's a birthday episode.
- 1:15:43I like the shot, cuz we're seeing it like through like the
- 1:15:46camera. And the little kid playing young
- 1:15:50Jupe is like, he starts to say his line and he goes shoot like
- 1:15:55this kid did so good playing a child actor, being a child actor
- 1:15:59and then having to like come out of the moment to be like, oh,
- 1:16:02hold on and like the director's saying is OK, just pick back up.
- 1:16:04From Dude like acting to act yes I hear is super, super tough.
- 1:16:09Yeah, so I'm really impressed with that little kid.
- 1:16:11Yeah, he does a great job with it.
- 1:16:13And. Like, so the whole episode is
- 1:16:15it's Courtney's birthday. And the sister character in that
- 1:16:19is getting out a giant birthday present.
- 1:16:21Yeah, and it's a giant box full of balloons, and the balloons
- 1:16:25float away and one pops, and it Spooks the chimpanzee playing
- 1:16:30Gordie. And he just starts.
- 1:16:36And attacking. It's so fucking creepy, dude.
- 1:16:39Like, after that, like, it just cuts to like, you're not seeing
- 1:16:42the feed of the episode anymore. It's just like, on the set.
- 1:16:45Yeah, And it's just so eerie. It's quiet.
- 1:16:48Yeah, and. This was in 1998.
- 1:16:50Yeah, and you just see Gordy chasing the cast members on the
- 1:16:54set and then he like stops to hover over the sister and starts
- 1:16:59eating her face. I'm sure that they got
- 1:17:02inspiration from this, from that monkey which is named Travis
- 1:17:07that attacked that woman. It was also an actor chimp that
- 1:17:11attacked her and ate her face because they gave it like
- 1:17:13medication that caused it to have like hallucinations or
- 1:17:17something. Oh my God.
- 1:17:18Yeah, they didn't necessarily do a good job with that.
- 1:17:21It's fucking terrifying. We've heard the 9/11 footage
- 1:17:24from one of those or did the call from one of those channels
- 1:17:28we watch on YouTube. Yeah, so Gordy spots Joop
- 1:17:32underneath the tablecloth, and I feel like this is an important
- 1:17:34detail we didn't talk about before from the macabre museum,
- 1:17:38which was a picture. Of Jupe and one of the Gordy
- 1:17:41chimps doing a fist. Yeah, the fist and.
- 1:17:43Yeah, he says. It's the first fist bump
- 1:17:45explosion. Explosion not implosion.
- 1:17:47And so he sees Gordy through these gauzy tablecloths so they
- 1:17:51can still see each other. But it's not direct eye contact,
- 1:17:54and he's freaking out, taking a gamble by not moving.
- 1:18:00Which like. I think that's the best move.
- 1:18:02Yeah, he's watched other people get chased.
- 1:18:04He's not. He knows he's not faster than
- 1:18:05this channel. And then Gordy comes up and
- 1:18:08you're like, it's so tense. And then like he reaches his.
- 1:18:11Little. Fist up, he just wants to fist.
- 1:18:14I know, funny, like I think seeing him like that may have
- 1:18:17been the one person that he connected with the most on set.
- 1:18:20So I calmed him down. They're also not doing direct
- 1:18:23eye contact, so he doesn't feel threatened anymore.
- 1:18:25Yeah, true. Like it's the whole thing is
- 1:18:28just so sad and then he gets shot right in front of you.
- 1:18:30Before they can even, like, do the fist bump, like right when
- 1:18:33they're both going for it. It's not his fucking fault get
- 1:18:36him off the set like and I get they have like they're trying to
- 1:18:40protect people like I get that but it just it also said it's
- 1:18:43I'm sorry to like. Bring up an old Internet meme.
- 1:18:46But it's kind of like Harambe getting fucking shot because
- 1:18:49that kid crawled into the thing. Not that I want the kid to die,
- 1:18:52but like, it just sucks that. It had to result in death one
- 1:18:56way or the other. It does.
- 1:18:57I can't give you any alternatives.
- 1:19:00Tranquilizers maybe, but I don't know.
- 1:19:02You need something immediate too, to protect.
- 1:19:04I mean, tranquilizers are pretty fast.
- 1:19:06It's like 30 seconds, 10 to 30 seconds.
- 1:19:08Yeah, chimps are pretty fucking durable though, for like they're
- 1:19:12small size. Like they're fucking beasts.
- 1:19:15Well, normally you would have a tranquilizer that is like
- 1:19:17calibrated to the size and metabolism of the animal that
- 1:19:21you're planning to drink. True.
- 1:19:23That's why anesthesia. I'll just make a lot of money.
- 1:19:26Boom. There you go.
- 1:19:28So yeah, that's all we get from that.
- 1:19:30He gets shot and then we cut back to Lucky.
- 1:19:32That's the time for this. One no, we cut to Jupe and like,
- 1:19:35he's back in present day and his wife comes in and she's like,
- 1:19:38OK, practice that first line for me and then we cut to Lucky.
- 1:19:43Yeah, so Angel is tarping up the cams cuz there's about to be a
- 1:19:47storm. And then OJ looks down and sees
- 1:19:49this flyer for the Star Lasso experience.
- 1:19:52And he's like, I'm gonna go get lucky because he's Oj's fucking
- 1:19:56smart. You think he pieced it together
- 1:19:58that he might be using Lucky for that.
- 1:20:00Yes. I absolutely do think he like.
- 1:20:03So I guess he could have made that connection that he noticed
- 1:20:06the rehearsal and then the things were happening and then.
- 1:20:09He noticed the rehearsal. He noticed the things were
- 1:20:11happening. He noticed that the Jean jacket.
- 1:20:15I'm just gonna start referring to it.
- 1:20:16They haven't named it yet, but I'm just referring to it as Jean
- 1:20:18Jacket 8. That training horse, which he
- 1:20:24probably has an idea that it's seen horses before, that wasn't
- 1:20:28a foreign idea to it. Okay.
- 1:20:30So even though it wasn't moving, it was like, I recognize this
- 1:20:33shape, I'm gonna go for it. Okay.
- 1:20:37So Mary Jo, the kid actress that was.
- 1:20:43Had her face eaten as there and she's got a little veil over her
- 1:20:45face. With a sweater of her from the
- 1:20:47show, that's. Fucking sad.
- 1:20:50It is, dude. It's.
- 1:20:50Really. And like, I don't mean that in a
- 1:20:52judgmental way. Like, it's just it's fucking
- 1:20:54sad. I mean, yeah, it's a tragedy,
- 1:20:56honestly. Yeah.
- 1:20:58So he's like at 6:13 PM you all will see a saucer.
- 1:21:04He's like six months ago I saw it for the first time.
- 1:21:07I do believe we have formed a connection because otherwise we
- 1:21:09wouldn't all be sitting here right now.
- 1:21:10But first. My boys are gonna treat you to a
- 1:21:13little show and they're wearing alien costumes.
- 1:21:16Their little costumes. That they got OJ with.
- 1:21:18Yeah, but then as they start to do that, Gene Jack makes his
- 1:21:25return unannounced. Yeah, and he's like, Oh well,
- 1:21:28never been early before. He wants to call them the the
- 1:21:31viewers, by the way. The viewers.
- 1:21:32I like that too. Which really comes in even more
- 1:21:35with the whole like this is an analogy for.
- 1:21:39Making a film. Oh yeah, I could see that.
- 1:21:42Yeah, dude, this whole scene right here is so fucking creepy.
- 1:21:45So he's got he unveiled Lucky, which she's gonna be using Lucky
- 1:21:49as bait. Lucky's in like this glass cage
- 1:21:52though, so protected and he hasn't released yet.
- 1:21:56Meanwhile, Jean Jacket flies from the sky.
- 1:21:58Yeah, he can't get Lucky to come out.
- 1:22:00Yeah, Lucky. Fully.
- 1:22:01No. It's like Nope.
- 1:22:02Yeah, exactly, the horse actually says.
- 1:22:04And open this movie. Yeah.
- 1:22:06I like kind of like Lucky. Just like keeps his head down.
- 1:22:08He's like, I've seen this shit before.
- 1:22:09I know what happened. So like I just need to do this.
- 1:22:12Yeah, so the power goes down, we see all the icing machines like
- 1:22:15slow down, the music stops and all the people get sucked up.
- 1:22:23It's so fucking creepy, dude. Like, just like, seeing them
- 1:22:26looking up into the sky and then everybody gets sucked up and
- 1:22:29then cuts the black, and then it cuts back to them inside the
- 1:22:33fucking thing. And they're all just it's so
- 1:22:35claustrophobic. It's one of those that you can't
- 1:22:38really tell what's happening, but it's enough that you're
- 1:22:40like, I don't, I don't want to be there.
- 1:22:43Yeah, they're like being digested into the thing and
- 1:22:45they're just like working this way through the system.
- 1:22:47And then they are met with a skull, like a skeleton of a
- 1:22:50horse that has been eaten before.
- 1:22:52No, it's the fucking training. Was it the training horse?
- 1:22:55Horse. Horse, yeah.
- 1:22:56Oh, I thought it was like a skull, like an old horse, that.
- 1:22:58Was No, it's the statue because it hasn't been able to digest
- 1:23:00it. Ah, OK, that makes sense.
- 1:23:02Because we've kind of figured out it can only.
- 1:23:04Only digest organic matter. OK.
- 1:23:05That's why it spits out the other stuff.
- 1:23:09So I think whereas Jupe thought he was training the viewers aka
- 1:23:16Jean jacket, Jean jacket was actually training Jupe.
- 1:23:21Boom. Damn, dude.
- 1:23:22And it paid off big time for Jean Jacket, because that was a
- 1:23:26feast. That was Jean Jackets
- 1:23:28Thanksgiving. They confirm later on that it's
- 1:23:30like 40 some people that were there that it consumes.
- 1:23:34Yeah, yeah. So total devastation.
- 1:23:39OJ gets down to Duke's claim shortly after and sees it's all
- 1:23:43deserted and it's just total destruction.
- 1:23:45Things are knocked over and Lucky is still in the cage and
- 1:23:49he's OJ smart. He won't come out.
- 1:23:52He doesn't want to be a moving target.
- 1:23:55So he's like trying to call Lucky over to him, but Lucky's
- 1:23:58also smart and says I'm gonna stay right the fuck here with my
- 1:24:01head down. My glass box.
- 1:24:03I've been safe here this entire time.
- 1:24:04Don't think I'm going anywhere. Yeah, so then there's big, like
- 1:24:09the thing flies really close to him and we cut.
- 1:24:13Yeah, it tries to like suck him up and then it knocks him out
- 1:24:16and then he wakes up and it's night time suddenly.
- 1:24:18Yeah, So he gets up. It's raining.
- 1:24:23He gets. Lucky Lucky has finally come out
- 1:24:26now, which is how he knows that Jean Jacket's gone.
- 1:24:28So he gets Lucky into the trailer and he gets into the
- 1:24:30truck, calls him and he says I was right, it's not a ship.
- 1:24:34And Angel has also shown up over at their house again.
- 1:24:39No, because he was covering up the cameras and he said all
- 1:24:41right, well. He's inserted it himself once.
- 1:24:43He is leaving here. He's.
- 1:24:44Hinting for like an invitation to stay.
- 1:24:46And I was like, alright, see ya. He's like, I guess I'll come
- 1:24:50back tomorrow to unwrap the tarps.
- 1:24:52Unless you want to and she goes, Oh no, you're doing that shit.
- 1:24:55OK, so he gets in his car to try and drive off.
- 1:24:59To Corey Hart and I love that. This is like they make it
- 1:25:04actually creepy here, so it's like sunglass.
- 1:25:06I wear my sunglasses at night. And This is why I need you to
- 1:25:10finish watching A Future Man because.
- 1:25:13Is that song part of it? Yes, Okay.
- 1:25:15Well, it starts to slow down and it sounds like the song is
- 1:25:20malfunctioning, so it's like. It's like that time that you put
- 1:25:26on our. In Prince album, but it was on
- 1:25:29the wrong RPM. Yeah, So.
- 1:25:30And so it's going super slow, yeah.
- 1:25:32It looks crazy. I actually really liked it like
- 1:25:37that. Whatever.
- 1:25:38I heard it at its actual pace. I was like, yeah, he's kind of
- 1:25:43trapped in there, except he, well, he gets out and runs back
- 1:25:46into the house with him. Yeah, and OJ is still on the
- 1:25:51phone with him and he's saying. It's alive and it's territorial.
- 1:25:56It thinks this is its home. Yeah, so he really cuz he's
- 1:26:00spent his entire life training animals, so he sees the
- 1:26:02implications here. So Angel comes and hides in the
- 1:26:06house with M They can hear screaming.
- 1:26:09Stuff is being spit out at it. It's raining blood.
- 1:26:12Yeah, dear, like, not only is it?
- 1:26:14Blood. It's blood vomit.
- 1:26:16And that's just, like, gross. Like the time Talia ate cat poop
- 1:26:19and then threw that up Like. Insult to injury, man.
- 1:26:22Yeah, it's really nasty. OJ gets near the house and his
- 1:26:25truck dies and he like, it's raining really hard and then all
- 1:26:29of a sudden there's no rain and he like peeks his head out and
- 1:26:32realizes Jean jackets right above and he goes Nope.
- 1:26:34It just closes the toy, yeah? The training horse falls down
- 1:26:39and breaks the windshield almost.
- 1:26:42Takes OJ the fuck out. If it had been like a foot to
- 1:26:45the left, done so just. Like his dad, it would have.
- 1:26:49Gone right through his eyeball A.
- 1:26:51Fucking horse to the eyeball is way more than a coin.
- 1:26:55Like afterlife. He's like, I kind of went down
- 1:26:57more hardcore than you down. Yeah, sorry.
- 1:27:01So later on. Probably the morning because
- 1:27:06it's. Like it's morning now, Yeah.
- 1:27:08The power is back and they all run for Angel's van, but it's
- 1:27:15it's taken a minute to warm up. And like so, like the IT dies
- 1:27:19down again. And then as they are running to
- 1:27:22the van, Jean jacket returns and hovers over top of OJ.
- 1:27:26And then OJ has the instinct to look down, just look down and
- 1:27:29not look at it in the eye. So when he does that.
- 1:27:32Jean Jacket stays above him, but it doesn't suck him up.
- 1:27:35Yeah, so they all are hanging out at Angels and Angel and M
- 1:27:40are playing in an Oculus Rift. Yeah, they're pictures.
- 1:27:45Yeah. I feel like they develop a
- 1:27:47relationship like apart from OJ. I like, they're like.
- 1:27:52Unwilling friendship, You know what I mean.
- 1:27:55I like it whenever they're like after this, they go to like a
- 1:27:58restaurant or whatever and he's like.
- 1:27:59They're talking about the tar tar.
- 1:28:01The tar tar got that Tang. The tar tar got that makes.
- 1:28:04Fun of the way he's saying that. And then OJ is the fucking
- 1:28:08buzzkill. They're like, breathe the room.
- 1:28:11Nobody wants to talk about that. Meanwhile, sports fans are
- 1:28:14fighting on the sidewalk outside.
- 1:28:16You know, this is my absurd for the movie.
- 1:28:18There's so much going on and. This is I just love it, the tar
- 1:28:21tar got saying. You're just brakes are just like
- 1:28:23fucking tarry tarry guys saying. He, like he says every animal
- 1:28:28has rules and he's like, you know what, I didn't go back.
- 1:28:34Need to let Lucky out. Gotta feed the horses back to
- 1:28:38his little like reliable study. And like, he also realizes he's
- 1:28:41got an obligation to those animals.
- 1:28:42Yeah, I mean, I would do the same thing too.
- 1:28:44Like you gotta go take care of him, Yeah.
- 1:28:46Meanwhile, Antlers has what a fucking stupid name I know he
- 1:28:51has heard about the event at Jupiter's claim.
- 1:28:55Yeah, it's like a news broadcast going on talking about 40
- 1:28:57missing people. Nobody knows where they went to.
- 1:29:00And he heard Agua Dulce, which is where they mentioned they
- 1:29:03were at. Yeah.
- 1:29:04So when they get back to the ranch, he's there.
- 1:29:08And he's like, you've got a wheelchair on your roof.
- 1:29:11And their house looks like something out of fucking
- 1:29:14haunting in Connecticut or something, 'cause it's just
- 1:29:16drenched in blood. Yes, it's like it was like Evil
- 1:29:20Dead remake status there. Like raining Blood.
- 1:29:23Everything's covered in blood now.
- 1:29:25So they they're talking, they're trying to figure out how they
- 1:29:31can get this shot and they're like, well, we realize that he
- 1:29:35doesn't like the flags or the fake horse can't eat that fuck.
- 1:29:37Them up. That's why he had that whole
- 1:29:39rejection of everything. Yep.
- 1:29:42And he's like jupe tread. To tame this thing, you can't
- 1:29:45tame a wild animal. At the most you enter an
- 1:29:49agreement with it. So how do we enter an agreement
- 1:29:51with this? And they call it Jean Jacket,
- 1:29:54like that's what he names it. And it's meaningful sibling
- 1:29:58moment between the two of them. Because that was her horse,
- 1:30:01yeah. Which I like that Angel and
- 1:30:03antlers don't question it. They're like a horse people.
- 1:30:07Horses have weird names. I like all the like the names
- 1:30:10that they've given these horses. Out of horse names, these are
- 1:30:14all reasonable. Yeah, let's see.
- 1:30:16OJ is gonna act as bait. He refuses to use one of the
- 1:30:19horses. I like that.
- 1:30:20Yes, again, I like his ethical treatment of his animals.
- 1:30:24Yeah, I It's just so funny. As OJ for the Ethical Treatment
- 1:30:28of Animals. Yeah, Angel's like not gonna
- 1:30:31work horse people and and Torres is like, OK, whatever.
- 1:30:36Yeah, cuz that was Antler's suggestion.
- 1:30:39He is going to use a crank camera that he has and it's
- 1:30:43gonna be like on actual like a can of film.
- 1:30:45Yeah, he rigged it himself. He like, made it himself.
- 1:30:47Not digital camera. Yeah, so it.
- 1:30:49Won't die. And when he says that and was
- 1:30:52like, what did I tell you? I knew he was gonna come through
- 1:30:55and they like high 5 like five times.
- 1:30:58Another great sibling moment. Yeah, I feel that, Yeah.
- 1:31:02So. The most That's the most energy
- 1:31:03and excitement you see from OJ this entire movie.
- 1:31:06Like he matches her in that one moment.
- 1:31:08Yeah. So they spend the day prepping
- 1:31:10and they're gonna plan to quote UN quote break Jean jacket.
- 1:31:14They make a cover for the horse's eyes, they take the
- 1:31:18wacky waving inflatable arm filling tube men and they rig
- 1:31:21them up to the batteries of all of the people rip from Jupiter's
- 1:31:25claim that were eaten by Jean jacket.
- 1:31:28And I think that's really smart too, cuz like they've got the
- 1:31:31music going also as like an audio cue, but now they've got
- 1:31:35this visual cue too, for when the power goes.
- 1:31:37Yeah, you can see you can track it.
- 1:31:38It's really smart. Yeah, for real.
- 1:31:41And so they're starting their plan.
- 1:31:43The whole thing is that Oj's gonna go out there with Lucky
- 1:31:46and Lucky's little face cover so he doesn't have to, like, make
- 1:31:49eye contact with Jean Jacket. And she starts the music in the
- 1:31:54house with the really loud speakers, which she's made
- 1:31:56louder by putting them outside. Yeah.
- 1:31:59And then fucking TMZ. I like this, yeah, just like
- 1:32:03they're ready to roll and then all of a sudden somebody's
- 1:32:06riding up on an electric motorcycle of all things and
- 1:32:10anything like rolls up there and starts questioning him and.
- 1:32:14She tries to divert him. She's like it's quicker to go
- 1:32:17the other way to get there and. She radios up to them and
- 1:32:21they're like what happens when an electric bike going 60 miles
- 1:32:25an hour hits a mass of anti energy.
- 1:32:29And we get to witness that because you see it from a
- 1:32:31distance, it just stops and he goes flying.
- 1:32:33It's like he hit a wall. I feel like that was like the
- 1:32:35Wilhelm scream that we hear. And.
- 1:32:39He like falls and. Gets badly hurt.
- 1:32:44Good guy OJ. Yeah, OJ being the good guy that
- 1:32:43he is. Says he's going to go out there
- 1:32:46and rescue him. Except the guy is just like,
- 1:32:48he's a fucking asshole. He like, is your TMZ job paying
- 1:32:52you this much? That like, you're willing to
- 1:32:54sacrifice everything for it? Because he's like, get the
- 1:32:57camera, get the camera. See now I thought he has an
- 1:33:00interesting helmet and it's basically a reflective visor,
- 1:33:02like all the way around. And I thought that this was
- 1:33:05going to do something interesting.
- 1:33:07Where? It was going to direct Jean
- 1:33:10Jacket to look at itself, which is something that maybe it
- 1:33:13hadn't done before, and it doesn't eat anything that
- 1:33:16doesn't look at it. So what if it's looking at
- 1:33:17itself? You know, I but we don't really
- 1:33:20get to see that play out. He just.
- 1:33:22He just sees like because there's like a.
- 1:33:23Hole in the middle of the helmet.
- 1:33:25That. And so basically the helmet
- 1:33:26looks like a giant eyeball. Yeah, so that's enough to
- 1:33:28trigger a Jean jacket. And OJ doesn't sacrifice himself
- 1:33:31for him like he was willing to try and help him, but he's also
- 1:33:34not going to get. Well, the dude doesn't want,
- 1:33:35he's like, don't take a picture of me first.
- 1:33:37Like he's just like wanting insurance shit.
- 1:33:39Yeah, So he goes running on Lucky and he puts up his hood.
- 1:33:46He's got little eyes on the back of it.
- 1:33:49He throws out a parachute with flags on it that M had sewn
- 1:33:53together and it it kind of deflects Jean Jacket and they
- 1:33:58all think that they managed to get the shot of Jean Jacket
- 1:34:01chasing after him. And then this is where Antlers
- 1:34:05gets real fucking morbid and I was like, we don't deserve the
- 1:34:09perfect shot. And then he straps the camera to
- 1:34:11his belly. The mountain.
- 1:34:14Yeah, he was like antlers. Yeah, but he said.
- 1:34:15Just said some really cryptic shit walked up the hill.
- 1:34:18So I don't know what's. And we talked about this the
- 1:34:22beginning of the episode. But, you know, he says that we
- 1:34:24don't deserve the impossible. And then he basically is
- 1:34:26cranking all the way up inside of Jean Jacket.
- 1:34:29And I don't know, maybe we'll see that footage someday.
- 1:34:32It just gets. Maybe not.
- 1:34:33Eaten by him, Yep. So OJ.
- 1:34:38Yeah, no Jean Jacket. OK, Sorry.
- 1:34:40My handwriting's really messy. It's hard to tell the difference
- 1:34:42between OJ and JJ. Jean jacket attacks the house
- 1:34:46and is throwing stuff at them. Angel gets pulled up, but he is
- 1:34:51like wrapped up in the barbed wire fence, so it looks like
- 1:34:54maybe he got spit out. We don't get full resolution.
- 1:34:56On it. I think it like starts to eat
- 1:34:57the barbed wire, which it's like, I don't want that.
- 1:35:00And yeah, it's like I learned my lesson with the flags.
- 1:35:02Yeah, so it just spits it out. He's also like wrapped in a tarp
- 1:35:05too, so it covers him. Yeah, so OJ, no Jean jacket has
- 1:35:12now transferred into this like sky jellyfish.
- 1:35:16Yeah, I don't fully understand why it goes through this
- 1:35:18transition is this. Angry, man.
- 1:35:21He's big. Yeah, he's big.
- 1:35:22Well, I've read that it's like imitating like a camera too,
- 1:35:26with the way that it makes that like formation, like it's like a
- 1:35:29old school camera lens. Okay.
- 1:35:32I don't really know for sure. I don't know what they're going
- 1:35:34for with it. But yeah, it's just kind of
- 1:35:36turning into a gigantic, weird thing.
- 1:35:39Yeah, Em has gotten to the bike and that's.
- 1:35:44Another one of her skills is motorcycles.
- 1:35:46Yeah, she can motorcycle very well.
- 1:35:48If Oj's job is horse, Em's job is motorcycle.
- 1:35:52He's old school. She's new school, isn't it?
- 1:35:54So he's gonna get Jean Jacket far enough for the bike to
- 1:36:00actually work. So she.
- 1:36:01Manages to get it to work and starts to drive off, which gets
- 1:36:04Jean Jacket to chase her. Yeah, and she gets over to the
- 1:36:08we saw at the beginning, One of the attractions they have at
- 1:36:10Jupiter's claim is like this. Well, that you're looking down
- 1:36:13inside and you crank it and it's a camera.
- 1:36:16Yeah, and it'll just take a picture of you like in the sky,
- 1:36:18too. Yeah, so they managed to
- 1:36:21basically get Jean Jacket Overhead, she releases this
- 1:36:26giant balloon of Jupiter. Not before, though, the curious
- 1:36:30slide. Oh yeah, she does the fucking
- 1:36:32Akira slide. She like slides on the which I
- 1:36:35that that's important because Jordan pill.
- 1:36:38Is a fucking nerd. He loves the movie, yeah.
- 1:36:41And he was offered to do the live action version of it.
- 1:36:44Oh, OK, I did not know that part of it.
- 1:36:46Yeah, and I think he turned it down.
- 1:36:48She's got a word that she released this gigantic balloon
- 1:36:51that is Jupes thing. I guess it's like a giant jupe.
- 1:36:56Yeah. So it's flying into the sky, and
- 1:36:59she starts to. Put coins that she's found into
- 1:37:02the machine and is like cranking it, just taking pictures, hoping
- 1:37:04to get it just in time. And that balloon makes it up to
- 1:37:08the sky. And then Jean Jacket manages to
- 1:37:10swoop in and eat it. And she gets the picture, she
- 1:37:14does get the shot and we see the balloon go inside of Jean
- 1:37:17jacket, but it can't digest it and there's too much going on
- 1:37:21and they explode together. Yeah, you hear it like pop and
- 1:37:24then it just causes it to explode too.
- 1:37:26And then we hear reporters outside saying we're here live,
- 1:37:30witnessing, you know, whatever, like.
- 1:37:33Did they see that shit? Yeah, it sounds like it.
- 1:37:35And so The thing is like, it's like, did they get footage of
- 1:37:38that exploding? What happened?
- 1:37:40Did they know what they were looking for?
- 1:37:42They have the shot. So they do still have something.
- 1:37:45And so there's that moment of like, we went through all of
- 1:37:47this, Did we accomplish what we need to?
- 1:37:51And then you can also see like her wondering like.
- 1:37:55Who died? Yeah.
- 1:37:57And then, as the smoke clears, she sees OJ.
- 1:38:00On the OJ he like arrives all western like.
- 1:38:03And she gets this good smile right before the credits roll.
- 1:38:07I love his like entrance there. Yeah, yeah, he gets his bad ass
- 1:38:10cowboy moment. Yeah, he does, yeah.
- 1:38:12He's wearing, by the way, a Scorpion King crew hoodie.
- 1:38:16It's awesome. And that's how the movie ends,
- 1:38:18right? I'm keeping mine at a nine I.
- 1:38:23I love this movie. Yeah, I I loved it when we saw
- 1:38:26it in theaters, and I still think about it pretty regularly.
- 1:38:29And now that we just rewatched it again, I'm gonna be full of
- 1:38:33all kinds of thoughts again. It's one of those movies that
- 1:38:35does that to me. I really love it.
- 1:38:37I'm keeping it at A9. Yeah, I think I'm actually gonna
- 1:38:40bump into 925 because I think talking about it was really cool
- 1:38:44because I learned a lot of things in this episode and
- 1:38:47watching it last night, I had a lot of fun.
- 1:38:49Like it's just. It's just a good experience from
- 1:38:53start to finish. I don't feel bored on.
- 1:38:55Yeah, I mean, it's a 2 hour movie, but it's great the entire
- 1:38:58way through. Yeah, it's one of those that
- 1:38:59like, it feels exactly the right length to me.
- 1:39:02Like I'm glad it ended when it did.
- 1:39:04I think if it had dragged on any longer, it would have felt like
- 1:39:06it was dragging on. If it had ended sooner, there
- 1:39:09would have been too much unanswered questions.
- 1:39:11It would have cut up some of the like.
- 1:39:13The mood of the moment, the tone and everything.
- 1:39:16I think it's exactly the right length and I didn't feel it.
- 1:39:19Doesn't feel like it's two hours.
- 1:39:20No, it doesn't. Personally, I think that this is
- 1:39:24my favorite Jordan Pill movie out of the three that he's done
- 1:39:27so far. Get out and this one are good.
- 1:39:31US output US as kind of MID. I think Get out is very closely.
- 1:39:36They're just such different movies, it's almost impossible
- 1:39:39to compare them to me. I like that about him.
- 1:39:41I like that he's doing different things every single.
- 1:39:43Time and I agree, and I think I'm gonna speculate some.
- 1:39:47I know we haven't gotten to user reviews yet or listener reviews
- 1:39:50yet, but I think a lot people love Get out.
- 1:39:57It's a thriller. It's a socially important kind
- 1:40:02of story to tell, and you get an explanation for everything that
- 1:40:06happens, but not in a way that feels contrived, you know,
- 1:40:09because the bad guys are real human beings.
- 1:40:11You get the bad guy speech. That all makes sense.
- 1:40:13Then we get us, which is a little bit more experimental.
- 1:40:16My biggest problem with us is that we get way too much
- 1:40:18explanation about what's happening.
- 1:40:20I think if we had cut out a few of the scenes, I would
- 1:40:24absolutely adore us. As it is, I really like us.
- 1:40:28But I do have some problems with it.
- 1:40:31Then we get to Nope, which is like, all right, we're just
- 1:40:34going to get fucking weird and we're not going to get any
- 1:40:37explanation beyond what a human being in this moment would have.
- 1:40:40And I think a lot of people went from seeing Get Out, where you
- 1:40:43get the whole story laid out for you.
- 1:40:44It's a thriller. It's very like in our present
- 1:40:48setting. It's a thing most people can
- 1:40:50relate to. Yeah, not the brain transplant,
- 1:40:54but you know what I mean. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:40:56It's very grounded now. We've got this Hollywood
- 1:40:58setting, this Western setting and this galactic setting, and
- 1:41:04we don't get any explanation for things.
- 1:41:07And if you've come to expect explanations and you don't get
- 1:41:10explanations, it can be very jarring.
- 1:41:12If you've come to expect a more grounded setting and you don't
- 1:41:14get a super grounded setting, it can be very jarring.
- 1:41:16And I get why people want to compare all of his works,
- 1:41:18because he is a newer director, but I love that he is not afraid
- 1:41:24to do different things. I think that is fantastic about
- 1:41:28him and I hope he does more weird shit like Nope.
- 1:41:32Yeah, I'm really he is. So good at weird shit.
- 1:41:34I'm really, really curious to see what his fourth movie's
- 1:41:36gonna be. Yeah, and obviously, like, I
- 1:41:39fangirled really hard about Jordan Peele at the beginning of
- 1:41:42the episode. Like you said, we've been like
- 1:41:46fans of him from like a for a whole other thing for a long
- 1:41:48time. And that still stands.
- 1:41:44I. And then?
- 1:41:50I like that he made the dive into this and he's made such a
- 1:41:52big impact. Well, and I mean even in his Key
- 1:41:54and Peele days, he talked a lot about how much he loves horror.
- 1:41:56And his horror skits were like silly, but like silly in a way
- 1:42:00that like. A horror fan understands as.
- 1:42:03Tiger would say he's true. Yeah.
- 1:42:05He's true. Yeah, he's true.
- 1:42:07Okay. You know who else love this
- 1:42:09movie? Italians.
- 1:42:10Are we? Talia had a great time.
- 1:42:12Oh my God, this movie started and Talia just, like, wouldn't
- 1:42:15stop playing. She was like having a good time.
- 1:42:17She was finding all of the squeaky toys, and she even got
- 1:42:20to like her favorite squeaky toy.
- 1:42:21She started pulling out crinkles.
- 1:42:23We had to, you know, remove the plastics so that way she doesn't
- 1:42:25swallow it. And we also readjusted the
- 1:42:27crinkle or the squeakers so she can't pull it out right away.
- 1:42:31She did rest a little bit, but she, like her eyes, were wide
- 1:42:35open at the end and she sat. Straight up she was like.
- 1:42:37Holy shit, yeah. There was a wild ride for you,
- 1:42:40yeah. And Zoe was on the couch most of
- 1:42:42the movie. She was actually cuddled up on
- 1:42:44my lap for a good portion of it and then she moved to the dog
- 1:42:47bed. Yeah, whenever shit got real,
- 1:42:49she got closer to the TV. Yeah.
- 1:42:51Yeah, she does like to do that near the end of the movie.
- 1:42:53Like, she likes to lay on the floor.
- 1:42:54Like the dog bed is right in front of the TV.
- 1:42:56She likes to lay right there. Yeah.
- 1:42:58So I think Talia, she will give this a 9.5.
- 1:43:03She doesn't like the horse and chimpanzee death, but she
- 1:43:05doesn't really know any horses and chimpanzees, so it doesn't
- 1:43:08hit us personally. Well, she made the connection to
- 1:43:11her monkey, which we have named Funky Kong.
- 1:43:14Yes, she's like Gordie. Funky Kong, You know, OK, I've
- 1:43:18heard Gordie is currently stuck in a Lunchable toy.
- 1:43:21It's a little puzzle toy. She hasn't solved that puzzle
- 1:43:26yet. That's a.
- 1:43:27Tough one. OK, Travis.
- 1:43:29Who'd you relate to? Who did I relate to?
- 1:43:31Oh my God, I feel like I've related.
- 1:43:34There were parts of each of them that are related to.
- 1:43:37I think I'm gonna ultimately relate a little bit more to OJ
- 1:43:43because I've always been very much.
- 1:43:44I keep my head down and keep working even when shit is
- 1:43:48miserable. Kind of person.
- 1:43:51I am a person that tends to not assert my own like authority and
- 1:43:56knowledge on stuff, even when it is fully earned, which is the
- 1:43:58thing I'm working on as myself. I love my sisters.
- 1:44:03No okay. So I'm gonna relate to OJ purely
- 1:44:08for the fries scene walking through the store cuz I felt him
- 1:44:13in that moment there with me grabbing my Sour Patch Kids,
- 1:44:16complimenting random people I see.
- 1:44:19And then getting the dude that just doesn't give a shit at the
- 1:44:22counter. That was just such a real.
- 1:44:24Experience and I. Related.
- 1:44:25Hard to him in that moment all. Right.
- 1:44:28All right. Do we have a dream sequel for
- 1:44:31this? OK, so I want to see kind of a
- 1:44:35role reversal where OJ and M have this fame that M was
- 1:44:40looking for. OJ wasn't necessarily.
- 1:44:42He just wanted the ranch to be successful.
- 1:44:44Yeah, And now they've become kind of the animals that
- 1:44:47Hollywood's like trying to train.
- 1:44:49They're trying to get them, yeah.
- 1:44:51So like, you know, they get this fame, they become big names and
- 1:44:54everybody wants a piece of them and they have to learn how to
- 1:44:56navigate like the Hollywood stuff.
- 1:44:58OK, do aliens come into play? I don't know Aliens necessarily
- 1:45:03have to come in to play for it. OK, I I think it can be a very
- 1:45:08like a sequel based on the characters.
- 1:45:10Almost anthological, but not 100%.
- 1:45:14I like where you're going. I think I could also see a
- 1:45:16Tremors Esque type of deal where they had the first encounter.
- 1:45:20So anytime something happens, that's their thing.
- 1:45:22They are the wranglers of the aliens.
- 1:45:26Angel becomes the Burt Gummer. I mean, yeah, exactly, Yeah.
- 1:45:32Um, maybe they like, I guess like a weird thing where they,
- 1:45:35like, wrangle fucking aliens now, you know?
- 1:45:38You know, I do like that idea. Yeah, I mean, I mean I think
- 1:45:41that there's even and anybody could make a Nope tremors mash
- 1:45:46of work it would be Jordan. Peele Well, there's even one.
- 1:45:48I think I could be completely wrong about who this is.
- 1:45:51It could be Romero, but there's one where they have completely
- 1:45:54tamed the zombies and are using them for entertainment purposes.
- 1:45:58Where they have them for like sports or like TV, stuff like
- 1:46:02that. Shit, no, no, no.
- 1:46:05I know what you're talking about.
- 1:46:07Fuck. Yeah, I think it's a Romero one.
- 1:46:09I think it is. I could be wrong, but it could
- 1:46:11be like a like one thing that like threaten.
- 1:46:15Our existence no, no, no was. The end of shot of the dead.
- 1:46:18No, that is a thing. But this is like a whole movie.
- 1:46:21Okay around this, right? Okay.
- 1:46:23Okay. Yeah, where like one thing that
- 1:46:25could then I don't know what you're talking about.
- 1:46:26I just know. Shot of the dead.
- 1:46:27One thing that could be threatening our existence has
- 1:46:30now been flipped on its head and they people have taken control
- 1:46:35of it and are using it for entertainment, which is 100% the
- 1:46:38point of this movie. So it would be kind of a
- 1:46:39continuation of it. Yeah, so I can see.
- 1:46:41That, yeah. And that also does tie into the
- 1:46:43whole Tremors thing too, because we have the Tremors arcade game
- 1:46:46and then the Tourist thing in Tremors 3.
- 1:46:49Yeah, yeah. Exactly.
- 1:46:51Okay. All right.
- 1:46:54New tag line. What do you got?
- 1:46:56I had this at the beginning and I wanted to save it.
- 1:46:58Cool. What is it?
- 1:46:59Yep. Yep.
- 1:47:02I guess that's how I feel about this movie.
- 1:47:04That's like the. The like Southern like, no.
- 1:47:07Yeah. You know like how you do that?
- 1:47:09No, no. So this is like, no.
- 1:47:10Yeah means yes and yeah, no means no.
- 1:47:12Exactly. Yeah.
- 1:47:15Yeah. No.
- 1:47:16But yeah. Come on.
- 1:47:16Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:47:19Yep. Yep.
- 1:47:21Okay. All right.
- 1:47:23So Internet review. Alright, I wanna know what you
- 1:47:27got. And I knew we were both high on
- 1:47:29this movie, so. Yeah, I picked an actual critic
- 1:47:32this summer. OK, that's.
- 1:47:33I like that you did that. So I picked Mike Wassell.
- 1:47:38OK, I can't remember which publication he's with exactly,
- 1:47:43but you can look him up. He's probably the lowest rating
- 1:47:46I found for this movie out there.
- 1:47:49But OK, it's not a whole lot, but it's like a medium sized
- 1:47:52review. So let's dive into it.
- 1:47:56What Pill doesn't have a Nope is a story, or anything close to
- 1:47:59one. He has a situation, but it
- 1:48:01doesn't develop. It more or less stays where it
- 1:48:04starts, with grander and louder versions of essentially the same
- 1:48:07scene for the 1st 20 to 30 minutes, the audience waits for
- 1:48:11Nope to start. Then it realizes, Oh no, this is
- 1:48:14it. To compensate for the lack of
- 1:48:16story, Pill leans into his own considerable virtuosity.
- 1:48:20Nope. Has lots of digressions and lots
- 1:48:22of showing off. Pill is particularly fond of
- 1:48:26cutting all sound and having the screen go black.
- 1:48:28A showing off Spirit can be healthy and a director.
- 1:48:31Hitchcock was a show off, Scorsese was a show off.
- 1:48:33And who's a bigger show off than Quentin Tarantino?
- 1:48:36The main thing is never to confuse showing off or telling a
- 1:48:39story. Then he goes on to give examples
- 1:48:41of like Tarantino doing it. I'm not going to do that in
- 1:48:44terms of story. That's just about it.
- 1:48:46For the next 110 minutes, the Haywood's face an alien threat
- 1:48:49hiding it. Behind an unmoving cloud just
- 1:48:52above their property, everything that follows is people either
- 1:48:55talking about it or something irrelevant, or trying to do
- 1:48:59something about it. But no one can ever do much
- 1:49:02about anything. In the middle of a movie, the
- 1:49:05action must be stretched. There are a couple of good
- 1:49:08scenes. One involves A homicidal
- 1:49:10chimpanzee going on a rampage on the set of a sitcom.
- 1:49:14And a sardonic touch that feels very Jordan Pill and A+ sign
- 1:49:18flashes on and off in the background.
- 1:49:20Pill gets some humor out of Kaluuya's forewarn, dead pen and
- 1:49:24mileage out of the eeriness of an abandoned theme park.
- 1:49:27And the sky, pale blue and vast, beautiful and threatening,
- 1:49:31becomes an ongoing and unsettling sight.
- 1:49:33For those who want to feel smart, you can even distract
- 1:49:36yourself by catching movie references.
- 1:49:37For example, a sitcom actress whose face was destroyed by the
- 1:49:40monkey attack bears a distinct resemblance to Norman's mother
- 1:49:44in Psycho. But you know why we have time to
- 1:49:46look at the sky or notice movie references?
- 1:49:49It's because Nope is 135 minute bore with with Pill unable to
- 1:49:53make even an alien attack exciting.
- 1:49:57Every so often and obviously a talented person makes a bad
- 1:49:59movie and that's what we have. And Nope, the talent is there.
- 1:50:02The movie is dead on the screen. I think this is another case of
- 1:50:07somebody coming in with different expectations because
- 1:50:09again, like I said, with Nope and even with us, even if people
- 1:50:12didn't like us as much as they like to get out, those are both
- 1:50:15much more thriller and this is a different kind of movie.
- 1:50:20And I think people went into it with certain expectations.
- 1:50:23And you know, not only is it Jordan Peele who's done 2 hit
- 1:50:28thrillers, it's an Alien movie and aliens are always.
- 1:50:33Big explosion. We got to connect the computers
- 1:50:36to the alien spaceship science. And that's not what this movie
- 1:50:43is it. The alien is helping us tell a
- 1:50:47different story. It's not a story about an alien.
- 1:50:50It's a story about mankind's arrogance.
- 1:50:53And yeah, I know that makes me sound like a pretentious fucking
- 1:50:55twat, but I don't care. Because that is, that is the
- 1:50:59story. I get it.
- 1:51:00But, you know, I think that for people wanting that, I think
- 1:51:03it's a fair criticism. Yeah, I totally understand where
- 1:51:06this person is coming from. You want to watch an Alien movie
- 1:51:09and that's what you're going for?
- 1:51:11Absolutely. I can understand why this movie
- 1:51:13wouldn't work for you because it's not.
- 1:51:15Ultimately, it's not an Alien movie.
- 1:51:17That's not how I would describe it to anybody.
- 1:51:19You know what I mean? Well, I mean, I think that he
- 1:51:21makes a good point where like it is just like a bunch of
- 1:51:24situations. Like the story is that they want
- 1:51:27to, but that's what stories are. They want to take a picture of
- 1:51:31it and there's not a whole lot of developments other than that.
- 1:51:34It's just them having like multiple.
- 1:51:38Encounters with it and then that is the movie and then it ends
- 1:51:42with them having a final encounter where they managed to
- 1:51:44get the picture. But the point of those multiple
- 1:51:46encounters is that they learn more about it each time, and
- 1:51:49they are professional animal wranglers, so they learn about.
- 1:51:51Look, I get it Like I get where he's coming from.
- 1:51:54Yeah, no, I've I'm not. I'm trying to say like I get it.
- 1:51:57And that's not a wrong take, because I think that it's
- 1:52:00perfectly fair to have that. Feeling toward this movie?
- 1:52:04Yeah, they're making valid points.
- 1:52:06Yes. I just happen to like that about
- 1:52:09this movie. I think that it works for me.
- 1:52:11I think if you are a person that is looking for a fast-paced
- 1:52:15alien attack movie, this is not the movie for you and I would
- 1:52:18not recommend it to you. Yeah, I think it has its other
- 1:52:23merits, but I do understand why people would go in expecting one
- 1:52:26thing and be disappointed. It is a long movie and it is a
- 1:52:30long movie, so it's a big time commit.
- 1:52:31It's like what you're talking about with Skinner rank earlier.
- 1:52:33Like we both can tell just from what we've heard from it.
- 1:52:36It's not a movie that immediately appeals to us and to
- 1:52:39sink that much time into it is going to be a gamble.
- 1:52:43So we're trying to decide when we want to personally take that
- 1:52:46gamble. Yeah, I get it.
- 1:52:47So, yeah, So all right, So that was their take.
- 1:52:51Let's see what everybody on our social media had to say.
- 1:52:56So we'll start off on Twitter. We actually had one or not
- 1:52:59Twitter. Let's start off with Instagram.
- 1:53:00We had one come in while we were recording here.
- 1:53:04This just in It's Michael E Howard Okay, it says.
- 1:53:08Just finished note. I have put it off not knowing
- 1:53:12what exactly it's about and wow, I am pleasantly surprised.
- 1:53:15Did not expect the direction it went.
- 1:53:17This is definitely a nine out of 10 for me.
- 1:53:19Can't wait to hear your thoughts on it.
- 1:53:21Boom, boom, boom. Once again, Michael, right on
- 1:53:23our level. You're.
- 1:53:24Like always on the same. So crazy.
- 1:53:27Get out. Of our.
- 1:53:28Brains Man, The Horror Fried Podcast.
- 1:53:32We love the cast, but bet sheets aren't scary.
- 1:53:36I don't want to like it looks like bed sheets in the sky.
- 1:53:39Yeah, I told them it looked more like a cowboy hat then Yeah, I
- 1:53:44just think it does. I think it looks more like a
- 1:53:45bad. And I think sheets can be scary.
- 1:53:48I remember when Michael Myers was a bed sheet.
- 1:53:51Ghost Bob. Ghost Bob.
- 1:53:52That was scary. Like, yeah, I get it's a very
- 1:53:56fantastical representation of an alien and it's not particularly
- 1:54:00scary looking until you remember that it's like several 100 yards
- 1:54:04wide and into the sky. But it doesn't.
- 1:54:08It doesn't look like a thing that we see in real life.
- 1:54:10So. I think that makes it scary to
- 1:54:12me. It makes it scary to me.
- 1:54:14But I can understand why it's not scary to other people.
- 1:54:16Because they're like, this isn't realistic.
- 1:54:17Same reason people, some people don't like ghost movies because
- 1:54:19they're like, I don't believe in ghosts.
- 1:54:21Yeah, I get it. I'm afraid.
- 1:54:22I know ghosts. I'm kind of one of those people.
- 1:54:25I don't really find ghost stuff super scary because I can't
- 1:54:27really relate to the Super hard, but we have a lot of fun once
- 1:54:29you figure normally do. We do.
- 1:54:31I mean, those can be scary sometimes.
- 1:54:33It's just yeah. You gotta do it the right way,
- 1:54:37Robert, Tone says. Meh and I did follow up asking
- 1:54:41why, he said. Man say once again, Robert.
- 1:54:43I'm asking for more details. So I got here, says.
- 1:54:47I feel like it just never got into high gear for me.
- 1:54:50They just kind of went along, wanted to be skydraws, have us
- 1:54:53one or two likable characters. Good God, his sister should have
- 1:54:56died and just didn't give us a satisfying ending.
- 1:55:01But he did dig the Acura reference.
- 1:55:03OK, and again, that's fair. I feel like it didn't have
- 1:55:06necessarily a huge I wouldn't be able to pick a specific moment
- 1:55:10as the climax for the movie, except for maybe like the big
- 1:55:13chase scene where they do get the footage.
- 1:55:15That's got to be the climax, yeah.
- 1:55:16But it is a lot of like throughout the movie.
- 1:55:19You get those peaks and valleys which I think you need,
- 1:55:21especially in a 2 hour movie, you need to have that
- 1:55:23throughout. I can't just be like ramping up
- 1:55:25the whole way through and then dropping down.
- 1:55:26Yeah, definitely. Yeah, but yeah, I get his point
- 1:55:29with that. Cube Save says this is the first
- 1:55:32of his movies. I think I connected to.
- 1:55:33I like it and I also or. I also love alien stuff.
- 1:55:38Done well. So, all right, I like that.
- 1:55:41I like that this is somebody who likes the movie that also likes
- 1:55:44that it's an Alien movie. Yeah, me too.
- 1:55:46Especially after what we just said about not really caring
- 1:55:49that it's an alien. I like that perspective on it.
- 1:55:52OK, now over to Twitter. We have Aquali boobs, he says.
- 1:55:57I love Daniel. Cool.
- 1:55:58Yeah. He's a fantastic factor, but
- 1:56:00this movie was just all right for me.
- 1:56:02I was honestly more interested in the chimp story the whole
- 1:56:04time as opposed to the stupid alien cloud.
- 1:56:07It was OK, had its moments better than us, but doesn't
- 1:56:10touch get out. I think the problem with the
- 1:56:12chimp story, I think it serves a very important foil to foil is
- 1:56:19not the right word. It serves a very important, like
- 1:56:23thematic tie in to the Jean jacket stuff that we've already
- 1:56:29talked about, but. I feel like being it first.
- 1:56:33Yeah, It does kind of like ramp you up for that for the rest.
- 1:56:37Of the movie. I think it provides you more
- 1:56:40immediate fear compared to what else we get in the movie.
- 1:56:45Like, every time you get glimpses of that, it's like
- 1:56:48dread the entire time. OK, but here's also The thing is
- 1:56:51that accidents really do happen on movie sets.
- 1:56:55We really do have multiple cases of primates attacking humans.
- 1:57:00Like, you know, we've mentioned Travis and Harambe.
- 1:57:04Like, those are just two immediate, like, super popular
- 1:57:06instances. Aliens.
- 1:57:13I'm not gonna go into all of that, but I can see how, Like,
- 1:57:17you can't argue that chimps exist, You know what I mean?
- 1:57:21Yeah. It's true.
- 1:57:25It's a much more grounded type of.
- 1:57:22I mean, it's very factual. Thing very recorded, yeah.
- 1:57:28Yeah, we are actually ancestors kind of like we're related in a
- 1:57:31way. I'm sure there are chimp denials
- 1:57:33out there, chimp deniers out there.
- 1:57:35Yeah, same as the people that don't think birds are real.
- 1:57:37Man, these No. That's a satire.
- 1:57:40Conspiracy movement. I know.
- 1:57:42I'm OK. Yeah.
- 1:57:43So is this right here? I doubt people don't think
- 1:57:46chimps are real. I bet there's like, one person
- 1:57:48out there right now that's a conspiracy.
- 1:57:50There's just like don't take me seriously.
- 1:57:51They'll see you someday. OK, Kevin Calves says.
- 1:57:55Excellent cinema, everything. Hit acting, sound design,
- 1:57:58creature design, cinematography, script.
- 1:58:00It's a Banger. Fuck yeah, absolutely.
- 1:58:03I mean, they checked all those boxes for me too.
- 1:58:05Honestly, everything there just works for me.
- 1:58:08I can understand why it doesn't work for a lot of others, so,
- 1:58:10but I like, I mean, I know we've spent two hours waxing poetic on
- 1:58:13it, but I fucking love this movie.
- 1:58:15Yeah, for real. I agree with everything Kevin
- 1:58:17said, Yeah. Dr. Rhodes says, in my honest
- 1:58:20opinion, it was overhyped, could have been worse, could have been
- 1:58:23better. And I think that there is some
- 1:58:25truth to that because I do believe Jordan Pill is a great
- 1:58:29director, but I think that he kind of receives his fair share
- 1:58:33of a lot of hype, which kind of makes it hard for him to live up
- 1:58:38to certain people's expectations.
- 1:58:39Sometimes he has earned his flowers, and I think because of
- 1:58:43that, people expect him to do that every single time, which I
- 1:58:47think is kind of ironic because then we look at what like the
- 1:58:51the parable that this is in terms of like a Hollywood
- 1:58:54experience. Yeah, that this has become such
- 1:58:57a divisive movie for him. I think that's kind of funny.
- 1:59:00It's kind of blowing my mind. I didn't realize it was as
- 1:59:03divisive as it is, but you know, here we are.
- 1:59:07Let's see Paraffet, Bob Briggs. Says it was OK.
- 1:59:13It's clearly a bar bet movie. Like Jay Peel was in the bar and
- 1:59:17his friends were like, you can't make a movie about one eyed
- 1:59:20purple people eater and have people even care about it.
- 1:59:23I suspect the response by Jay Peel was Hold my beer.
- 1:59:27OK, I would like to take this moment to play the song for
- 1:59:29Travis and I probably won't play this on the air, but Travis last
- 1:59:34night when Antlers was quoting when I'd one hard flying purple
- 1:59:37People Eater, Travis is like, what is this real like is this
- 1:59:40the thing? And I was like, yeah.
- 1:59:41I've never heard it's on every Halloween fucking playlist ever.
- 1:59:48OK, I can see it. Yeah, I can totally see it.
- 1:59:52Yeah. So now Travis has heard at least
- 1:59:56part of that song. He knows it's real.
- 1:59:57Honestly, I love the concept of a bar bet movie.
- 2:00:01And you know what? If I would want anybody to do
- 2:00:04it, I would want it to be somebody like Jordan Peele, who
- 2:00:07I think can handle his shit. And even if it is a bar bet
- 2:00:10movie, he fucking wins on my judging.
- 2:00:13I mean, if it were a bar bet movie, I think that he did a
- 2:00:15great job making a movie about that, right there to like what
- 2:00:18it is. But I also think if you take a
- 2:00:20lot of movie concepts and like distill them down, it's easy to
- 2:00:24make them sound silly. Yeah, for real.
- 2:00:25But I'm sure that there are bar bet movies out there.
- 2:00:28I would love to hear like actual examples of 1 big Chungus.
- 2:00:32The perfect name. Nope is a Nope for me.
- 2:00:35That's like a fucking like that. That's on the poster right
- 2:00:38there. Yeah.
- 2:00:39I mean, that's really good coffee.
- 2:00:41But I would like to know more why Chungus is.
- 2:00:44I I get what you're saying. I respect your opinion.
- 2:00:48I would like to understand where your opinion comes from.
- 2:00:49That's like, really? We're not here to like either
- 2:00:52over praise movies or shit on movies.
- 2:00:54Like, we just want to understand why people do and do not like
- 2:00:56them. Yeah.
- 2:00:57So please, if you hear this, let us know.
- 2:01:00I would also like to know what a chungus is that tan.
- 2:01:04Denton says Nope, it's amazing. I saw it in IMAX and was so
- 2:01:09important that when it came out on Blu-ray, I bought it on disk.
- 2:01:13Listen, please don't guys, I'm begging you, please don't
- 2:01:16mention seeing things in IMAX. So Travis, he's really butt
- 2:01:18hurt. We don't have IMAX close to us.
- 2:01:20We don't have real IMAX. He's really sad about it and I
- 2:01:23have to hear about it often it. Is kind of upsetting, honestly.
- 2:01:26I would love to watch something in IMAX one day.
- 2:01:30Amanda, She says Three out of five could have been a much
- 2:01:33better short film or Twilight Zone episode.
- 2:01:35I'm beginning to think, get out with an accident.
- 2:01:37OK, I could see how this would be really great for a short or a
- 2:01:41Twilight episode, Twilight Zone episode, because it's one of
- 2:01:45those that if you have the mystery of it, it's really
- 2:01:47scary. I like what he did with it as a
- 2:01:50full story I can. I can see the potential for it
- 2:01:53being a short film as well. I think it's even funnier
- 2:01:55necessary. Go ahead.
- 2:01:56Oh no, I was just gonna say like, and if get out is your
- 2:01:59thing, I can also understand how this is not to be too funny.
- 2:02:04This is an alienating movie. Yeah, yeah.
- 2:02:09I mean, it's different. But, you know, I I like when
- 2:02:12directors do different things. You know what I mean?
- 2:02:14Like, it's cool that he's exploring what he wants to do.
- 2:02:17Something different. Not trying to like cash in and
- 2:02:21just like keep making the same shit over and over again.
- 2:02:24Yeah, but. And also I think it's funny that
- 2:02:28she says Twilight because or Twilight zone cuz he did like
- 2:02:31the twilight zone reboot thing. Well, I think that's maybe what
- 2:02:34she I hoped that she was. Yeah, maybe.
- 2:02:36Maybe. I heard it was really bad.
- 2:02:38So I'm glad that he didn't put it on Twilight Zone.
- 2:02:41Either way, I get it. I get it.
- 2:02:45Big Fat Media Bomb. Says slickly shy.
- 2:02:49Override mess alternates between pretension and
- 2:02:52incomprehensibility, thinks Antar, The Thing That Wouldn't
- 2:02:56Shut Up. Directed by Spielberg after a
- 2:02:58three day Bender Casanois, especially Pomeranian.
- 2:03:03I was on Team Jean jacket from the get go.
- 2:03:06Nope indeed. Thumbs down.
- 2:03:08OK, see, This is why I said that some people might find him
- 2:03:12obnoxious. Yeah, I can understand.
- 2:03:14I mean, and I guess for some people, she's not exactly like
- 2:03:17an endearing personality. I I like her.
- 2:03:19I find her very endearing. Yeah, I get it too.
- 2:03:21I mean, I also, I like Daniel Kaluuya's character too.
- 2:03:25I think that he's, he's the person that you would get to
- 2:03:30know. You know what I mean?
- 2:03:32Like I. Would like to know Tiki Palmer's
- 2:03:33character is one that, like, she will get to know you.
- 2:03:37Yeah. Daniel Kaluuya is is one that
- 2:03:38you get to know. Yeah.
- 2:03:40And I think that they're both, they're both people that I would
- 2:03:44be friends with. I would be like, I am friends
- 2:03:46with the Heywood siblings. That's how I would phrase it.
- 2:03:49I feel like everybody in the movie feels pretty real.
- 2:03:51I mean, they're all people that like personally I'm attracted to
- 2:03:55personality wise, like you know, like I want to get to know these
- 2:03:58types of people. But I totally understand that
- 2:04:01they're not your people. Yeah, I mean.
- 2:04:03Steven Yeun is kind of an asshole, so I get that one.
- 2:04:05Like, I'm glad he kind of gets a He had that one coming.
- 2:04:08Yeah, he's got little horsey munchables going up to an alien.
- 2:04:11That's Dick behavior. Yeah.
- 2:04:13I want to know Steven Yeun as a person though, cuz he just seems
- 2:04:15really. Nice.
- 2:04:16Exactly. He's too nice for this role.
- 2:04:17He seems like he gives really good hugs.
- 2:04:19And I'm not a hugger, but it just like, you know what I mean?
- 2:04:21Like. Maybe.
- 2:04:23I don't know if he's like the hugging type.
- 2:04:25I'm not the huggin type either. But like, sometimes you can just
- 2:04:27be like that person would give good hugs, you know what I mean?
- 2:04:29All right, well, to cap this all off, Speaking of huggin types,
- 2:04:32we have Chad here. Chad is our friend here.
- 2:04:38He he's a very all of this in for you Chad, because I know you
- 2:04:42listen, I just joked on my beer. Chad says my favorite pill movie
- 2:04:47and the only negative I had about it is this movie and it's
- 2:04:52alright. OK, my favorite pill movie and
- 2:04:54the only negative I have about this movie, and it's a complaint
- 2:04:57I never have about films, is that I wish it was actually a
- 2:05:00bit longer. Then Hoytoma or Hotima is only
- 2:05:04rivaled by Roger Deakins as the best cinematographer.
- 2:05:07Working Alright? Yeah.
- 2:05:08No. I feel like every time we see
- 2:05:10Chad Mandy, we talk about movies that we love because they're so
- 2:05:14short and, like, they know to be short.
- 2:05:16So yeah, we should have a like, discussion about movies that,
- 2:05:19like, earned their length. Yeah, for real.
- 2:05:21I mean, I do feel like this one did.
- 2:05:22I mean, I think it's the first guys Sunday and we'll talk about
- 2:05:25it that's. Right.
- 2:05:26I think that this movie is a perfect length.
- 2:05:28I don't think it's a second too long or too short.
- 2:05:31I think it did exactly what it needed to do.
- 2:05:32It did never say it's welcome. It didn't, like get things done
- 2:05:37too quickly. I guess I could see it being
- 2:05:39something like Midsummer, where that movie felt the perfect
- 2:05:42length, even if it was long in theaters.
- 2:05:44And then we watched the director's cut, and it was just
- 2:05:46like, my God, the. Three hour cut is really good.
- 2:05:48Yeah. And it adds so much.
- 2:05:49And even though it definitely is 3 hours, like you don't watch it
- 2:05:53and you're like wow, I'm watching a three hour movie.
- 2:05:55You're like. Yeah, The thing is with this
- 2:05:56right here, I feel like. There's so much that just
- 2:06:00doesn't get explained and I think it's good it doesn't get.
- 2:06:03Explained exactly. If you add more time and you're
- 2:06:05not offering explanations, I don't really feel like it serves
- 2:06:08a purpose at that point. But more flying cowboy hat is
- 2:06:13always good too. So yeehaw.
- 2:06:16Yeehaw. All right, well yeehaw for this
- 2:06:18episode. Y'all, cuz that's it.
- 2:06:20That's all of our reviews. Okay.
- 2:06:21So next week. We are starting our next
- 2:06:26franchise. We're talking about Saul.
- 2:06:29We are talking about Saul. And right now you can currently
- 2:06:32watch it on Pluto TV for free. YouTube with a prime time
- 2:06:38subscription stars Prime. Hulu with a premium subscription
- 2:06:43Sling TV with a premium subscription.
- 2:06:45YouTube TV, which I think already is a premium
- 2:06:48subscription. Philo Premium subscription.
- 2:06:52You can also rent it from Google Play, Red Box or Voodoo for
- 2:06:55$4.00 each. Or you could spend $4.00 on a 10
