- 0:01Speaker 1: Five, four, three, two, one. Boom, and we're live. Thanks
- 0:08Speaker 1: for doing this, man. I appreciate it.
- 0:10Speaker 2: Hey, thank you for having me. I appreciate that.
- 0:11Speaker 1: You're the only guy I've ever had in the studio
- 0:13Speaker 1: where when I showed up, you were working out.
- 0:16Speaker 2: That's what I do, man. That's my life. That's my life.
- 0:19Speaker 1: That's pretty crazy, though. I mean, how much time did
- 0:21Speaker 1: you have when you got here?
- 0:22Speaker 2: I got here about an hour early.
- 0:24Speaker 1: Oh, okay.
- 0:24Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 0:25Speaker 1: Okay.
- 0:25Speaker 2: We got a little early.
- 0:26Speaker 1: So I got here, shirt off, doing chin-ups.
- 0:28Speaker 2: It was hilarious.
- 0:29Speaker 1: I didn't get my camera out in time before you
- 0:30Speaker 1: saw me. I wanted to take some pictures.
- 0:32Speaker 2: Well, maybe next time.
- 0:33Speaker 1: Next time. Well, I'll catch you after the show. You
- 0:37Speaker 1: are a guy that, for a lot of people, you
- 0:41Speaker 1: sort of embody the idea of hardening your mind and
- 0:47Speaker 1: figuring out a way to to do things that most
- 0:51Speaker 1: people think are impossible. You've sort of become that guy
- 0:55Speaker 1: over your life, and you've become that guy for a
- 0:57Speaker 1: lot of people, including me, online. We've talked about you
- 1:00Speaker 1: on the podcast a ton of times. So having you
- 1:02Speaker 1: in here has been very exciting to me.
- 1:05Speaker 2: I appreciate that. Thank you.
- 1:07Speaker 1: How'd you become that guy?
- 1:09Speaker 2: You know what? I grew up not that guy.
- 1:11Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:12Speaker 2: So a lot of people put a title on me.
- 1:15Speaker 2: They see me now. They see me now as the
- 1:19Speaker 2: guy that with his shirt off who can do 4,030
- 1:22Speaker 2: pull-ups in 17 hours, who can run 205 miles in
- 1:26Speaker 2: 39 hours, who can do all this crazy shit. But
- 1:28Speaker 2: what they don't understand is they don't understand the journey
- 1:31Speaker 2: that it took me to get to this point. And
- 1:35Speaker 2: what got me to this point was I was just
- 1:37Speaker 2: the opposite of what I am today. I was that
- 1:39Speaker 2: guy who ran away from absolutely everything that I got
- 1:44Speaker 2: in front of me. Not many people knew that. I
- 1:46Speaker 2: had two people. Like the real me was like this
- 1:51Speaker 2: very scared, insecure, stuttering, got beat up by his dad,
- 1:55Speaker 2: all this kind of stuff. And then I built this
- 1:57Speaker 2: fake person that walked around like my shit didn't stink,
- 2:01Speaker 2: you know? Yeah, so that's kind of how I did it.
- 2:05Speaker 2: And through a process of time, I realized that I
- 2:08Speaker 2: was lying to myself and lying to people.
- 2:10Speaker 1: But it's a fascinating journey, though, because you are that
- 2:14Speaker 1: guy now. I mean, you genuinely are a legit badass.
- 2:18Speaker 1: And at one point in time, you were a legit
- 2:21Speaker 1: terrified person.
- 2:22Speaker 2: Yes.
- 2:22Speaker 1: So what was the process? Like, how did you step forth?
- 2:27Speaker 2: Well, it's a long process.
- 2:29Speaker 1: Right.
- 2:31Speaker 2: My dad beat the shit out of me when I
- 2:32Speaker 2: was growing up. I was the first black baby born
- 2:36Speaker 2: in this hospital called Miller Fillmore in Buffalo, New York.
- 2:40Speaker 2: My dad owned skating rinks. He owned bars. He ran
- 2:42Speaker 2: prostitutes from Canada to Buffalo, New York. My dad was
- 2:46Speaker 2: a big-time pimp, big-time. Anything bad about a person, big-time hustler.
- 2:50Speaker 2: He was American. You know that movie with D'Angelo Washington?
- 2:54Speaker 2: He was that, but not that bad. He wasn't that big,
- 2:58Speaker 2: but that's what it reminds me of. He was that
- 3:00Speaker 2: kind of guy. And beat the shit out of me,
- 3:03Speaker 2: beat the shit out of my mom. There was an
- 3:05Speaker 2: incident one time when my mom got knocked out on
- 3:07Speaker 2: top of the stairs and he drug her down the
- 3:08Speaker 2: stairs by her hair. And at six years old, I'll
- 3:12Speaker 2: never forget this. In my mind, I was always afraid.
- 3:16Speaker 2: My whole life I was afraid, but I had this
- 3:18Speaker 2: fucking voice, this conscience that would always be battling me, saying, hey,
- 3:23Speaker 2: you got to get up and do something. I didn't
- 3:24Speaker 2: want to do shit. I was just afraid, but that
- 3:29Speaker 2: voice would force me to get up And my dad,
- 3:31Speaker 2: you know, I try to beat him up, whatever, at
- 3:33Speaker 2: six and I get my ass kicked. So this went
- 3:34Speaker 2: on for several years. And I have a big time
- 3:37Speaker 2: learning disability. My dad didn't believe in us going to school.
- 3:40Speaker 2: So my dad, it was about the business, the skating
- 3:44Speaker 2: rink and the bar. So the skating rink opened about
- 3:46Speaker 2: seven o'clock at night. And this is the time I
- 3:48Speaker 2: was able to walk. So about four, five, six years old, eight, nine.
- 3:53Speaker 2: And I'd go to the skating rink at seven o'clock
- 3:56Speaker 2: at night. And I worked the skating rink until 10
- 3:58Speaker 2: at night. And then we would scrape the gum off
- 4:01Speaker 2: the floors and we cleaned the whole skating rink up.
- 4:03Speaker 2: And then my dad had an office. And my brother
- 4:06Speaker 2: and myself would sleep in the office. And my mom
- 4:07Speaker 2: would go upstairs and work the bar until three o'clock
- 4:10Speaker 2: in the morning. And then they cleaned the bar up.
- 4:13Speaker 2: So after all that shit was done with, going to
- 4:15Speaker 2: school rarely happened. So when I went to school, I
- 4:18Speaker 2: was all kind of, You know, my learning disability, I
- 4:22Speaker 2: had social anxiety. I was just a jacked up kid
- 4:25Speaker 2: from living in this tortured home. From the outside looking in,
- 4:29Speaker 2: we lived in an all-white neighborhood. And then we would
- 4:31Speaker 2: travel to the ghetto of Buffalo, New York, where the
- 4:34Speaker 2: skating rink was at. So, you know, we worked around
- 4:37Speaker 2: mostly blacks. And I lived around mostly whites. But no
- 4:41Speaker 2: one knew what was going on in that house on
- 4:43Speaker 2: 201 Paradise Road. You know, it's crazy. But my mom
- 4:47Speaker 2: got courage to finally leave him. when I was about
- 4:50Speaker 2: eight years old, we moved to a small town in Brazil, Indiana.
- 4:53Speaker 2: And that's when the real war started for me. And Brazil,
- 4:56Speaker 2: Indiana is a small town, great people, a lot of
- 4:58Speaker 2: great people. And I say that because a lot of
- 5:00Speaker 2: people get offended and I'm going to get to the
- 5:03Speaker 2: point where they get offended. There was about maybe 10
- 5:06Speaker 2: black families at about 10,000 people in the town. And
- 5:10Speaker 2: in 1995, the KKK marched in the 4th of July parade.
- 5:14Speaker 2: So this was a, Not everybody was racist. There was
- 5:17Speaker 2: a lot of good people. Some of the best people
- 5:18Speaker 2: I knew was there, but there was also a lot
- 5:20Speaker 2: of racism there. So me being one of the few
- 5:23Speaker 2: black kids in that area, it kind of haunts you.
- 5:27Speaker 2: I had stuff on my notebook, you know, nigga, we're
- 5:28Speaker 2: going to kill you, on my Spanish notebook. They had
- 5:31Speaker 2: that on my car, nigga, we're going to kill you.
- 5:33Speaker 2: This is early 90s. And so even though I showed
- 5:37Speaker 2: it didn't hurt me, it was jacking me up. So
- 5:40Speaker 2: all the insecurities I had when I was a kid
- 5:42Speaker 2: with my father, I moved into this area here and
- 5:46Speaker 2: It just got worse and worse and worse. And this
- 5:48Speaker 2: shit haunted me. And that voice that I talked about,
- 5:52Speaker 2: it kept talking louder and louder and louder. But I
- 5:54Speaker 2: was doing nothing about it. And I decided to make moves.
- 5:58Speaker 2: And I cheated all through school. And it's kind of
- 6:02Speaker 2: humbling to talk about my story sometimes. And it's also embarrassing.
- 6:07Speaker 2: But it's real. It's who the fuck I am. It's
- 6:09Speaker 2: what I am. It's what created me. and copied from
- 6:13Speaker 2: the fourth grade to my junior year in high school
- 6:16Speaker 2: on every assignment. And I wanted to get in the military.
- 6:19Speaker 2: I wanted to join the Air Force. And the guy
- 6:22Speaker 2: gave me an ASVAB test. It was like a watered-down SAT.
- 6:25Speaker 2: And I couldn't copy on it because the guy beside
- 6:27Speaker 2: me had a test A. I had test B. The
- 6:29Speaker 2: guy on my right had test C. So I looked
- 6:31Speaker 2: to copy on this test, and I couldn't copy on it,
- 6:33Speaker 2: so I got like a 20. And I wanted to
- 6:35Speaker 2: be an Air Force pararescueman. It's guys that jump out
- 6:37Speaker 2: of airplanes and save downed pilots. It's a special operator
- 6:40Speaker 2: in the Air Force. And my score was so horribly
- 6:44Speaker 2: low that we take it again. And he said, hey,
- 6:47Speaker 2: I got like an 18 the second time, even worse.
- 6:50Speaker 2: I need to get a 50 out of a 99.
- 6:53Speaker 2: And so my mom and I, for a while, we
- 6:55Speaker 2: lived in the government subsidized apartments, $ 7 a month, and
- 6:59Speaker 2: also food stamps. And we slowly moved up to a
- 7:01Speaker 2: $ 230 a month place. But at the time, you know,
- 7:04Speaker 2: we were pretty poor. But my mom afforded enough money
- 7:09Speaker 2: for me to go to see a tutor and One
- 7:11Speaker 2: one hour a week. So for four hours a month,
- 7:14Speaker 2: I had six months to study for my last test
- 7:16Speaker 2: I'm going to take the acid, you know the acid
- 7:18Speaker 2: test three times and I Studied my ass off and
- 7:22Speaker 2: passed it and I got in the air force and
- 7:24Speaker 2: realized there was more things in front of me I
- 7:26Speaker 2: was afraid of the water terrified the water and um
- 7:30Speaker 2: I learned how to swim but what gets everybody in
- 7:33Speaker 2: this training in all special ops training Is the water
- 7:36Speaker 2: confidence where they try to pretty much drown your ass,
- 7:38Speaker 2: you know all of our lives we've been breathing And
- 7:41Speaker 2: they take that from you. And they want to see
- 7:43Speaker 2: how comfortable you are underwater. And there's only 1% African
- 7:46Speaker 2: Americans in special operations. And I didn't know anything about African.
- 7:50Speaker 2: A lot of them are negative buoyant, which I am
- 7:53Speaker 2: because of the bone density. I struggled. But six weeks
- 7:57Speaker 2: into the program, there was about 25 guys left out
- 7:59Speaker 2: of about 150. I was there. And I didn't go
- 8:03Speaker 2: to sleep for six weeks of the program. And I
- 8:07Speaker 2: wanted to quit so badly, but I quit everything in
- 8:09Speaker 2: my life. I copied through school. I wanted to prove
- 8:11Speaker 2: people wrong. And so here I am in this Air
- 8:14Speaker 2: Force program starting to get a little more confidence, but
- 8:17Speaker 2: this water was kicking my ass. And six weeks into
- 8:20Speaker 2: the program, the doctor gave me a blood test. It
- 8:22Speaker 2: was that sickle cell, sickle cell trait, not the anemia,
- 8:26Speaker 2: but it still killed people. But so they put me
- 8:28Speaker 2: out training for a week. And when you go from
- 8:31Speaker 2: being very uncomfortable in that water situation to And then
- 8:34Speaker 2: now you're comfortable and i'm sitting back watching the guys drown.
- 8:37Speaker 2: I'm not you know I'm not part of the activities
- 8:39Speaker 2: anymore for this week I don't want to get back
- 8:41Speaker 2: in that damn water again So the fear overcame me
- 8:44Speaker 2: and all my insecurities from my dad from this small
- 8:47Speaker 2: town from everything started coming back And even though no
- 8:50Speaker 2: one knew how fucked up I was kind of create
- 8:52Speaker 2: this other person who was tough I live with this
- 8:55Speaker 2: shit all the time so Me not wanting to go
- 8:58Speaker 2: back in that water, the doctor called me back up.
- 9:00Speaker 2: I thought I was going to get like a medical
- 9:02Speaker 2: kick out of the military. So no quitting for me.
- 9:04Speaker 2: They'll kick me out so I can have some pride.
- 9:07Speaker 2: The doctor said, no, man, we could put you back
- 9:09Speaker 2: in the training. And I was like, fuck. But after
- 9:12Speaker 2: a week, I'm like, you know what? I missed one week.
- 9:15Speaker 2: There's only three weeks left. There's a good chance, you know,
- 9:17Speaker 2: I could tough this shit out and go on. But
- 9:20Speaker 2: I went back to the CO and the command officer
- 9:22Speaker 2: of the program and And the sergeant said, hey, you
- 9:25Speaker 2: got to start from day one because you missed, you know,
- 9:28Speaker 2: that week of training. And I broke.
- 9:31Speaker 1: I broke.
- 9:32Speaker 2: I couldn't imagine going back through that again. So I
- 9:36Speaker 2: made up a lie. And I said, man, the sickle
- 9:38Speaker 2: cell thing is really scaring me. It was the fucking water.
- 9:40Speaker 2: It wasn't sickle cell. And I pretty much quit. Even
- 9:45Speaker 2: though they gave me a medical, I quit. So from
- 9:49Speaker 2: the age of 19 to the age of 22, I
- 9:53Speaker 2: went and did a job called TACP, where you control
- 9:55Speaker 2: fast movers behind enemy lines. Cool job, but there's no water.
- 9:59Speaker 2: I was afraid of the water. so I avoided it.
- 10:01Speaker 2: And I gained 125 pounds in that time frame. I
- 10:04Speaker 2: went from 175 to almost 300, to 297 was my heaviest.
- 10:09Speaker 2: And I started finding things that was comfortable. And the
- 10:12Speaker 2: more things I found comfortable, the more uncomfortable my mind was.
- 10:16Speaker 2: Because that voice I was telling you about, it always
- 10:19Speaker 2: was there. I was just trying to avoid that conscience.
- 10:22Speaker 2: I wanted to be left alone from that conscience, and
- 10:25Speaker 2: it wouldn't leave me alone. So I got out of
- 10:27Speaker 2: the Air Force, and I started working for a job
- 10:29Speaker 2: called Eco Lab, where you spray for cockroaches, at 24.
- 10:33Speaker 2: And spraying that different steak and shakes, red lobster, whatever,
- 10:37Speaker 2: from 11 o'clock at night to 7 o'clock in the morning.
- 10:40Speaker 2: And what changed, I came home and watched this Discovery
- 10:42Speaker 2: Channel show, Class 224. I came home from steak and shake.
- 10:47Speaker 2: I sprayed it down last, get a big old large
- 10:49Speaker 2: 42 ounce shake while across the street and get a
- 10:52Speaker 2: box of mini donuts from 7-Eleven. And I would drive
- 10:56Speaker 2: home for 45 minutes. This big old fat guy who, yeah,
- 11:00Speaker 2: I worked out, but I was fat. I didn't run,
- 11:03Speaker 2: didn't PT. I just hit the gym. So I'm driving home,
- 11:07Speaker 2: turn the TV on and what comes on Discovery Channel. So,
- 11:10Speaker 2: and that's where everything changed for me. I was taking
- 11:13Speaker 2: a shower. I walked out, heard these guys and I
- 11:16Speaker 2: watched the show, and it made me reflect big time
- 11:19Speaker 2: on the piece of shit that I am, and I'm
- 11:22Speaker 2: exactly what people said I was going to be.
- 11:24Speaker 1: So what was on this show that really struck home?
- 11:27Speaker 2: I saw these guys going in the water, so I
- 11:30Speaker 2: was terrified of it. I mean, I can't even express it.
- 11:33Speaker 2: Have you ever had a big fear? And I know
- 11:35Speaker 2: a lot of fighters have fears and stuff like that,
- 11:37Speaker 2: but they get over them. But a lot of us
- 11:39Speaker 2: have these fears that you just don't want to fucking face.
- 11:43Speaker 2: And I have a lot of them. I had a
- 11:45Speaker 2: lot of them. And that's what created the person who's
- 11:47Speaker 2: in front of you today. And we'll get into that.
- 11:50Speaker 2: But just a scared bitch is what I was. But
- 11:54Speaker 2: I was watching these guys going through Hell Week, Class 224.
- 11:57Speaker 2: And these guys ringing the bell, quitting, dropping their helmet down,
- 12:00Speaker 2: rolling out. A lot of guys just leaving. And it
- 12:04Speaker 2: made me reflect on my fears, my insecurities. And I
- 12:08Speaker 2: saw real men, what I thought were real men who
- 12:11Speaker 2: were staying there. who were overcoming adversity, who were overcoming
- 12:15Speaker 2: all these different things that I had blamed so many
- 12:17Speaker 2: fucking people in my life, my dad, my mom for
- 12:21Speaker 2: not being there. When I was 14 years old, my
- 12:25Speaker 2: mom was gonna get remarried to this great guy, he
- 12:26Speaker 2: got murdered. And then I moved back to that small
- 12:29Speaker 2: town in Brazil and everybody was to blame. My learning disability,
- 12:34Speaker 2: my skin color, me being everything. And so I sat
- 12:39Speaker 2: there for a while and I was like, man, I
- 12:41Speaker 2: got to fucking, I've got it. No one's going to
- 12:43Speaker 2: fucking come to help me. No one's going to fucking
- 12:46Speaker 2: come to help me. It's fucking me against me, period.
- 12:49Speaker 2: And so I had the man up and I said,
- 12:51Speaker 2: the first thing I started doing is facing every fucking
- 12:54Speaker 2: fear I have, no matter what the fuck it is, man.
- 12:56Speaker 2: And these things would keep me up at night. No one,
- 13:00Speaker 2: people who are hearing this shit, they will never really
- 13:03Speaker 2: understand and grasp When you face these things and so
- 13:05Speaker 2: many things, how they keep you up and haunt you
- 13:08Speaker 2: at night.
- 13:08Speaker 1: I think there's a lot of people out there that
- 13:10Speaker 1: know what you're talking about.
- 13:11Speaker 2: I mean, and so that's what it did. And I
- 13:15Speaker 2: had two options. To either be that 300-pound guy who
- 13:19Speaker 2: sprayed for cockroaches and made $ 1, 000 a month. And at
- 13:23Speaker 2: 24 years old, knowing when I'm 50 fucking years old,
- 13:26Speaker 2: I can reflect on this and think about what guy
- 13:28Speaker 2: I never became. Or I can totally just sack it up.
- 13:32Speaker 2: and fail and fail and fail until I succeed. So
- 13:36Speaker 2: I started calling recruiters up. I said, I'm gonna go
- 13:38Speaker 2: be a fucking Navy SEAL. And every recruiter, so there's
- 13:41Speaker 2: a weight and height, so the weight and height limit
- 13:45Speaker 2: to get in the military. And I was six foot
- 13:47Speaker 2: one and 297. And I had a prior service, which
- 13:50Speaker 2: was a big deal. So I called all these recruiters
- 13:53Speaker 2: up and all of them said, hey, how tall are you? Blah, blah, blah, blah.
- 13:55Speaker 2: They got into conversation to see if I was even qualified.
- 13:59Speaker 2: And by the time I got to my weight, phone
- 14:00Speaker 2: would hang up pretty much like hey you know what
- 14:02Speaker 2: call somebody else you know try to get in the
- 14:04Speaker 2: reserves so I tried to get in the reserves and
- 14:07Speaker 2: I called this guy named Steven Salgio recruiter up he
- 14:09Speaker 2: said hey come on in he saw me put me
- 14:12Speaker 2: through the weight standard all this other stuff and to
- 14:14Speaker 2: get into the class I had to get into I
- 14:16Speaker 2: had to lose 106 pounds in less than three months
- 14:19Speaker 2: so I was like, fuck that. I can't do that.
- 14:22Speaker 2: I grabbed my chocolate milkshake and went back to Ecolab.
- 14:25Speaker 2: I'm going back to work, man. This is my life.
- 14:28Speaker 2: So in this job, you're looking for cockroaches, looking for
- 14:31Speaker 2: rodents and stuff like that. And this next morning or
- 14:34Speaker 2: this next night, I went to work and I don't
- 14:38Speaker 2: like cockroaches too much. I hit the mother load of cockroaches.
- 14:42Speaker 2: And this restaurant got full of cockroaches and rodents and
- 14:46Speaker 2: everything else. And I sat there and said, this is
- 14:48Speaker 2: my life. I said, this is my life. You are
- 14:51Speaker 2: exactly who the fuck, this is it. And I said,
- 14:55Speaker 2: this ain't going to be it for me. So in
- 14:58Speaker 2: that restaurant, I quit my job, left my canister in
- 15:01Speaker 2: that restaurant, my spray canister, got back in my Ecolab truck,
- 15:06Speaker 2: and I went home. And I started working out like somebody,
- 15:10Speaker 2: I became the most obsessed person on the planet Earth.
- 15:14Speaker 2: And I was basically, I had to invent a guy
- 15:19Speaker 2: that didn't exist. I had to invent a guy that
- 15:21Speaker 2: can take any pain, any suffering, any kind of judgment,
- 15:25Speaker 2: be called nigger, be called whatever the fuck in the world,
- 15:27Speaker 2: and be able to stand in the fucking room and say,
- 15:28Speaker 2: go fuck yourself. I had to build this callous mind,
- 15:32Speaker 2: and I built it through suffering. I built it through
- 15:35Speaker 2: downright fucking just crushing myself. If it was raining outside
- 15:38Speaker 2: at 3 o'clock in the fucking morning, if it was snowing,
- 15:41Speaker 2: the first instinct is don't go out there and do shit.
- 15:44Speaker 2: My instinct was we got to fucking go out there.
- 15:47Speaker 2: Anything that was fucking horrible in my life that I
- 15:50Speaker 2: would normally say no, that was inhumane to most people,
- 15:55Speaker 2: I had to go do it. And I started callousing
- 15:58Speaker 2: my mind at this point in my life. And I
- 16:01Speaker 2: lost the weight. I lost the weight, and I went
- 16:04Speaker 2: back to recruiter. I got into that class, and I
- 16:07Speaker 2: went through three Navy SEAL hell weeks in one year.
- 16:10Speaker 2: Only guy to ever be in three hell weeks in
- 16:12Speaker 2: one year, to my knowledge. The first one I didn't
- 16:14Speaker 2: make it through. The next two I did. And I
- 16:19Speaker 2: didn't stop anymore from there. And I started realizing through
- 16:24Speaker 2: this process that the fucking mind is what you created.
- 16:30Speaker 2: And I started opening different doors that I didn't think
- 16:32Speaker 2: were even there, that I didn't think even existed. And
- 16:35Speaker 2: the more doors I opened up, the more I started
- 16:36Speaker 2: realizing that my potential is damn near endless. And it
- 16:41Speaker 2: changed my whole mindset. So I went from David Goggins
- 16:44Speaker 2: and I created Goggins. And that journey is a priceless
- 16:49Speaker 2: journey that it's hard for me to even explain to
- 16:51Speaker 2: people because it sounds so quick and easy. Like I
- 16:53Speaker 2: lost this weight and I went through three hell weeks.
- 16:56Speaker 2: I went to ranger school, went to Delta Force Lexington.
- 16:58Speaker 1: Whatever it is.
- 16:59Speaker 2: It was brutal. It's a brutal journey every fucking day.
- 17:03Speaker 2: Are you happy? If anybody knows my life story, I'll
- 17:07Speaker 2: try to give you just a snippet of it. Where
- 17:09Speaker 2: I'm at today is in front of Joe Rogan telling
- 17:11Speaker 2: you my life. To get through where I became, to
- 17:15Speaker 2: get through where I'm at now, There's nothing but pride
- 17:18Speaker 2: I have for myself that I can't really show people
- 17:21Speaker 2: because I have this face. I have this face that
- 17:23Speaker 2: they see like, are you happy? What's wrong with you?
- 17:26Speaker 2: I'm driven. I'm obsessed. And that's what you see.
- 17:29Speaker 1: That's it. People need to hear this story. This is
- 17:34Speaker 1: an exciting story for people because there's a lot of
- 17:36Speaker 1: people out there that feel trapped and they feel stuck
- 17:38Speaker 1: and they feel like they can't do anything. This is
- 17:40Speaker 1: who they are. You're a guy who felt that exact
- 17:43Speaker 1: same way, but figured out how to not be that
- 17:46Speaker 1: person and be a person that you would admire. How
- 17:49Speaker 1: did you, what were the first steps? Like you had
- 17:52Speaker 1: some slips before, right? Because you quit because of the
- 17:55Speaker 1: water thing. Right. But then when you went back the
- 17:57Speaker 1: second time and you decided you're going to lose all
- 17:59Speaker 1: that weight and you quit that job. Was it just
- 18:03Speaker 1: straightforward from there? Or were there some days where you
- 18:05Speaker 1: just failed and then you picked it back up again?
- 18:08Speaker 2: So my first run, when I decided to lose the weight,
- 18:11Speaker 2: I was, like I said, 297. I was about 32%
- 18:14Speaker 2: body fat. And my idea was to run four miles
- 18:19Speaker 2: for my first run. I didn't know how bad it
- 18:21Speaker 2: was going to fucking hurt me. I used to run
- 18:23Speaker 2: before I was fat. And I was like, fuck it,
- 18:24Speaker 2: I can do this. I ran a quarter mile and
- 18:26Speaker 2: walked home. I walked home and sat on my couch
- 18:29Speaker 2: and cried. I went to my mom's house who was
- 18:32Speaker 2: about 40, about maybe 20 minutes down the road and
- 18:35Speaker 2: cried and getting her couch saying, man, I can't fucking
- 18:36Speaker 2: do this. I don't know what I'm gonna do. I, uh,
- 18:40Speaker 2: just got somebody pregnant. My life was this fucked. I
- 18:43Speaker 2: was making a thousand dollars a month. My rent was eight,
- 18:46Speaker 2: 10 a month. And my mom just kept fucking with
- 18:48Speaker 2: me and kept fucking. You're not good enough, man. This
- 18:50Speaker 2: isn't for you, man. These guys are bad motherfuckers on
- 18:52Speaker 2: the planet earth. You're not that. And, um, What it was,
- 18:58Speaker 2: and it's kind of funny, I was obsessed with Rocky.
- 19:02Speaker 2: Rocky 1, in particular. And when I was a kid,
- 19:06Speaker 2: I'd come home every day and I'd watch this fucking show, Rocky.
- 19:10Speaker 2: And I would fast forward with the little VHS tapes
- 19:13Speaker 2: to round 14. Round 14 fucked me up like nobody's business. Why?
- 19:19Speaker 2: The song came on. When I bought the pull-up record,
- 19:21Speaker 2: I listened to the song for 17 hours. It's 2
- 19:23Speaker 2: minutes and 13 seconds. And I'm able to visualize and
- 19:29Speaker 2: dream like nobody's business. And I know that I can
- 19:34Speaker 2: create a vision that many people can't. And I work
- 19:38Speaker 2: for it. So the vision I had was when Apollo
- 19:40Speaker 2: Creed beat the fucking shit out of Rocky, beat the
- 19:43Speaker 2: shit out of him. He kept fighting. He was a
- 19:45Speaker 2: dumb fighter. Couldn't read, couldn't fuck. That was me. Couldn't read,
- 19:49Speaker 2: couldn't write. just punchy, everything about him. And Rocky beat
- 19:54Speaker 2: the shit, or Apollo beat the shit out of him.
- 19:55Speaker 2: He was in that corner, and everybody was saying, stay
- 19:57Speaker 2: the fuck down. And him getting up, him getting up,
- 20:02Speaker 2: Apollo Creed raised his arms up in the fucking air,
- 20:04Speaker 2: turned around, thought he won the fight. He turns around
- 20:07Speaker 2: and sees this guy getting up. And it was the
- 20:09Speaker 2: face of Apollo Creed that changed my life. The face
- 20:13Speaker 2: of Apollo Creed. It was like just by that motherfucker
- 20:16Speaker 2: getting up. Not winning. Just by him getting the fuck up.
- 20:21Speaker 2: Apollo Creed was champ. He was the best. Rocky had
- 20:24Speaker 2: taken his soul. Had literally taken his soul. His head
- 20:28Speaker 2: goes down. He looks at him like, what the fuck
- 20:31Speaker 2: are you? I want it to be that. Not Rocky. Rocky.
- 20:35Speaker 2: I wanted to be the guy that people looked at.
- 20:37Speaker 2: I don't care if you liked me or didn't like me.
- 20:38Speaker 2: I don't care. But I said, this motherfucker is going
- 20:41Speaker 2: to keep coming after whatever the fuck is in front
- 20:44Speaker 2: of him. I wanted that. I wanted that. I wanted
- 20:48Speaker 2: that worse than anything in the world. So that is,
- 20:53Speaker 2: I kept picturing me falling down and getting up. And
- 20:57Speaker 2: every motherfucker that called me nigger, I was dumb. Even
- 21:00Speaker 2: myself was. Even myself, I wanted to feel something besides
- 21:05Speaker 2: the feet. I wanted to just go the distance. And
- 21:09Speaker 2: that going the distance pushed me to a point of
- 21:12Speaker 2: where now I go way past the distance.
- 21:15Speaker 1: So you go the first day, you run a quarter mile,
- 21:18Speaker 1: and then you walk back home and you're upset. How
- 21:21Speaker 1: do you move forward?
- 21:22Speaker 2: So basically what I did was I came home and
- 21:24Speaker 2: I had a talking milkshake. I sat down and I
- 21:28Speaker 2: gave up. I said, this ain't going to fucking happen, man.
- 21:30Speaker 2: I could lose 106 pounds and I can't even go
- 21:32Speaker 2: a quarter fucking mile. I started being able to take
- 21:39Speaker 2: negative shit and be happy. And this whole, I say
- 21:44Speaker 2: what if a lot, it sounds corny and it sounds weak,
- 21:47Speaker 2: but it's true. One of the recruiters said, there's not
- 21:51Speaker 2: many black Navy SEALs. Matter of fact, I was the
- 21:53Speaker 2: 36th African-American SEAL in history. It's over 70 years. That's crazy.
- 21:57Speaker 2: Because the fucking water, you know? I mean, people get
- 22:00Speaker 2: mad at me. It's fucking true. Just get over it.
- 22:03Speaker 2: And so I was like, man, what story would it
- 22:08Speaker 2: be if my fucking fat, dumb, lying to be friends
- 22:12Speaker 2: with people, insecure ass can overcome this shit? And that
- 22:17Speaker 2: what if mentality, that dreamer mentality just would always fuel me.
- 22:23Speaker 2: It was just fueling me. What if I can be
- 22:24Speaker 2: a SEAL, man? What if I can go from running
- 22:28Speaker 2: a quarter of a fucking mile? Now I run 205 miles.
- 22:32Speaker 2: What if I can go? Just what if I can go?
- 22:36Speaker 2: And how would that feel if I'm graduating? Because I
- 22:38Speaker 2: don't forget at the graduation thing I was talking about, 224,
- 22:41Speaker 2: like the video I sat down and watched. This command
- 22:44Speaker 2: officer stood up and he said to the graduation, guys
- 22:47Speaker 2: who are graduating, buds, like 18 of them. He said,
- 22:50Speaker 2: we live in a society where mediocrity is often rewarded.
- 22:53Speaker 2: And he went on to say something about these men
- 22:55Speaker 2: detest mediocrity. And I wanted to be a man that
- 22:59Speaker 2: detests mediocrity. It got me in a lot of trouble
- 23:03Speaker 2: in the SEAL teams and going forward in my life
- 23:05Speaker 2: because I just, I started looking down on people for
- 23:08Speaker 2: not going hard as fucking shit. And I started to
- 23:12Speaker 2: create different things, but that's for a different day. But
- 23:15Speaker 2: I just believed that, you know, my whole mind changed.
- 23:17Speaker 1: That is a problem that a lot of people who
- 23:19Speaker 1: work hard do have. You get angry at people who
- 23:21Speaker 1: don't work hard to the point where you want to
- 23:25Speaker 1: insult them. You want to smack them. And it's really
- 23:28Speaker 1: because you're scared of seeing that in yourself.
- 23:30Speaker 2: Yeah. That's probably the truth. That's probably the truth. So
- 23:34Speaker 2: I guess a lot of times in my life I
- 23:36Speaker 2: would see people and it probably was a direct reflection
- 23:39Speaker 2: of who I was. And I would get mad at them,
- 23:41Speaker 2: but in reflection, it's probably just me getting mad at myself.
- 23:43Speaker 1: Yeah, that's for me, 100%. When I see people that
- 23:47Speaker 1: are half-assed and things, I get terrified of seeing that
- 23:49Speaker 1: in myself, and I get mad at them.
- 23:51Speaker 2: Right.
- 23:51Speaker 1: And it's not a good way to handle it.
- 23:55Speaker 2: No.
- 23:55Speaker 1: But it's natural, because you're just terrified of seeing that trait.
- 23:59Speaker 2: Right, and it costs me.
- 24:00Speaker 1: So you come back, you do the quarter mile, you
- 24:04Speaker 1: walk back home. How do you regroup?
- 24:06Speaker 2: So what I did, I sat down there and I
- 24:07Speaker 2: put Rocky in. I got my milkshake, put Rocky. I said,
- 24:11Speaker 2: you know what? I was big time in Rocky and Platoon.
- 24:15Speaker 2: Why Platoon? I love to see people who were getting
- 24:18Speaker 2: beat down. And there's scenes. There's scenes that just drove me.
- 24:23Speaker 2: And people in my hell weeks, you know, I was
- 24:24Speaker 2: in three of them. They'd always hear me singing these songs.
- 24:28Speaker 2: These songs, humming these songs in torturous situations. When everybody's
- 24:32Speaker 2: quitting this fucking code, I would be somewhere gone. Somewhere
- 24:37Speaker 2: fucking gone. Somewhere fucking dark as shit. There's a scene
- 24:40Speaker 2: in the platoon when Elias, when Barnes shoots Elias, and,
- 24:44Speaker 2: you know, they think Elias is dead, and the choppers
- 24:47Speaker 2: are tanking off, and Charlie Sheen's asking, you know, Tom Barringer,
- 24:51Speaker 2: where's Elias? Where's Elias? William Defoe. Oh, I found him
- 24:55Speaker 2: back there dead somewhere. And through the woods, the Viet
- 24:59Speaker 2: Cong is chasing Elias through the woods, and they're shooting
- 25:01Speaker 2: him in his fucking back. And all he wants to
- 25:03Speaker 2: do is get to the fucking chopper. He's getting shot
- 25:05Speaker 2: in his back. He's getting up. He's getting shot in
- 25:06Speaker 2: his back. He's getting up. And you see this guy
- 25:09Speaker 2: just fighting. I love the fucking guy who just fucking fights.
- 25:13Speaker 2: And so I put these things in as reminders that
- 25:16Speaker 2: you're going to have to fucking suffer, man. This fucking. 25, man,
- 25:21Speaker 2: this is... Man, you're going to have to fucking suffer
- 25:25Speaker 2: to go from this fat, insecure motherfucker to one of
- 25:29Speaker 2: the best guys on the planet Earth. This journey is
- 25:31Speaker 2: going to take something that is going to be incomprehensible
- 25:34Speaker 2: to most people. And these different... visualizations, how I visualize
- 25:40Speaker 2: in my self-talk, it became so nasty and dirty that
- 25:43Speaker 2: I almost liked the fact that I went. 25. So
- 25:48Speaker 2: it became from being defeated to like, man, all right, motherfucker,
- 25:51Speaker 2: maybe tomorrow I'm going to go. 75. It just became
- 25:55Speaker 2: this different mindset. I turned negatives into positives. So I
- 25:59Speaker 2: would take it like, who would even think about doing this?
- 26:01Speaker 2: So I would sit at my couch saying, who at
- 26:04Speaker 2: 297 who can't fucking swim that great, who's scared of
- 26:06Speaker 2: the fucking water, would have the fucking balls, who had
- 26:10Speaker 2: the balls to fucking man up, quit a job, and
- 26:13Speaker 2: go and just put everything on himself. So it's how
- 26:17Speaker 2: I started talking to myself. And put myself in a
- 26:20Speaker 2: whole different category and that would fuel me the next day.
- 26:22Speaker 2: And I just kept using that as fuel and fuel.
- 26:24Speaker 2: No one would do this shit. No one would do
- 26:26Speaker 2: this shit. You're the baddest motherfucker around. You're the baddest
- 26:28Speaker 2: motherfucker to ever live. And I just kept fueling me
- 26:31Speaker 2: with the right kind of message that I needed to
- 26:34Speaker 2: hear that I was never telling myself. And through time,
- 26:39Speaker 2: it became reality to myself.
- 26:42Speaker 1: So... You start out on the first day, and then
- 26:45Speaker 1: do you start running again the second day?
- 26:47Speaker 2: Yeah, the second day, we're right back after it again.
- 26:49Speaker 2: But I started realizing I can't run that far. Right.
- 26:51Speaker 2: So what I did was I became damn near a
- 26:53Speaker 2: professional cyclist with the miles I put on the bike.
- 26:56Speaker 2: So I never... Whenever I watched TV... I had to
- 27:00Speaker 2: be doing something. So I was riding a bike. I
- 27:02Speaker 2: rode a bike a lot to lose the first initial
- 27:05Speaker 2: kind of weight because my bones were just hurting so bad.
- 27:08Speaker 2: My body was just broken. And I learned to get
- 27:10Speaker 2: over that also. And I tried to swim a lot.
- 27:12Speaker 2: I wasn't a great swimmer, but putting fins on kind
- 27:15Speaker 2: of equalized my body. I wasn't so negative buoyant. So
- 27:17Speaker 2: I started finning a whole bunch. And I spent hours
- 27:20Speaker 2: in the pool, hours in the pool, trying to get
- 27:23Speaker 2: more and more comfortable. Not because I was going underwater.
- 27:25Speaker 2: I was so scared of the water that I had
- 27:27Speaker 2: to live in the water. I had to become one
- 27:30Speaker 2: with the water. So going to the pool used to
- 27:33Speaker 2: scare me. So I went to the pool an awful,
- 27:36Speaker 2: awful lot. And then the bike got easier. I was
- 27:40Speaker 2: able to run more. I went from like one mile.
- 27:43Speaker 2: One mile is a great accomplishment. Two miles. And then
- 27:46Speaker 2: from two to three was a big one. Then I
- 27:48Speaker 2: went from three to six. And then like they have
- 27:51Speaker 2: a warning order that they give people to get ready
- 27:53Speaker 2: for buds. And the whole thing was running six miles
- 27:56Speaker 2: five days a week. And that was my goal. And
- 27:59Speaker 2: so I just kept, I failed, I go back to scratch.
- 28:03Speaker 2: I used some positive motivation. I have like one day
- 28:05Speaker 2: where I'm like fucking defeated. But I started realizing this
- 28:08Speaker 2: is part of the process. This is part of the journey.
- 28:10Speaker 2: I had to realize this is part of my process
- 28:12Speaker 2: versus just saying, like I used to, I'm just not
- 28:14Speaker 2: good enough. If I'm not good enough, we always say
- 28:17Speaker 2: that shit. I'm just not good enough. And then we
- 28:19Speaker 2: try something else. I'm going to fucking make myself good enough.
- 28:22Speaker 2: And that became my mentality. I'm going to make myself
- 28:25Speaker 2: good enough. And so I misunderstood a lot. But that's
- 28:29Speaker 2: all it came down to. I made myself good enough.
- 28:32Speaker 2: And the days I couldn't run that far, the next week,
- 28:36Speaker 2: I would do two a days. So on the running,
- 28:40Speaker 2: if I ran a quarter of a mile, I'd wait
- 28:42Speaker 2: a fucking couple hours. It'd haunt me, bother me. I'd
- 28:45Speaker 2: try to run a half a mile the next time.
- 28:46Speaker 2: Same day. You can do more than this. If I
- 28:50Speaker 2: had to walk, I had to walk. It just became
- 28:51Speaker 2: just a process of grinding and grinding. And grinding is
- 28:54Speaker 2: not even a good word for it. It's not even
- 28:57Speaker 2: a good word for it. and just going further and further.
- 29:01Speaker 2: And then when I got through running, I'd go to
- 29:03Speaker 2: the bike, I'd go to the pool. If I got
- 29:05Speaker 2: tired somewhere, my legs were tired, I'd go to the gym.
- 29:08Speaker 2: And I developed this crazy workout where I was doing volume,
- 29:12Speaker 2: like two, 300 reps of very light weight. People always say,
- 29:17Speaker 2: how come you don't have any loose skin? My workout
- 29:19Speaker 2: routine in the gym became sick. It became sick. I
- 29:23Speaker 2: was just doing 200, 300 reps, 400 reps on my chest,
- 29:26Speaker 2: just like for one simple exercise, the bench press. And
- 29:31Speaker 2: I'd rack it, get back on it, just rep it out,
- 29:33Speaker 2: trying to burn as many calories as I can, build
- 29:35Speaker 2: that muscle mass. And I just became obsessed with it.
- 29:39Speaker 1: So when you... doing this, are you worried at all
- 29:41Speaker 1: about repetitive stress injuries or the fact that your body's
- 29:44Speaker 1: not conditioned for this? And you're basically taking your body
- 29:47Speaker 1: where you had abused it, and now you're forcing it
- 29:50Speaker 1: to live like an elite athlete.
- 29:52Speaker 2: Right. I didn't care. I didn't know any better. I
- 29:54Speaker 2: didn't think about it. Wow. I didn't know anything. that
- 29:58Speaker 2: working out that hard would fuck you up.
- 30:01Speaker 1: Did it fuck you up?
- 30:02Speaker 2: Oh, yeah. That's one reason why I went through three
- 30:03Speaker 2: hell weeks. So I don't talk about it a lot,
- 30:07Speaker 2: but the stress of my life getting to 24 caused
- 30:11Speaker 2: me to have some serious psoas issues. I didn't know
- 30:13Speaker 2: anything about this shit. The psoas muscle is what we use.
- 30:16Speaker 2: It's your hip flexor muscle. And basically under stress, it
- 30:19Speaker 2: starts to tighten up. And I stuttered from the time
- 30:23Speaker 2: I was in third grade, the time I was in
- 30:25Speaker 2: seventh grade, white blotches on my skin, I was a nutcase.
- 30:29Speaker 2: And so the insides of me are also getting fucked up.
- 30:33Speaker 2: So in this process, my psoas muscle got real tight
- 30:37Speaker 2: to my T12. I can show you the bump in
- 30:40Speaker 2: the back of my head after this show is over,
- 30:42Speaker 2: but I started growing this fucking large tumor-looking bump in
- 30:46Speaker 2: the back of my head from my body compressing. So
- 30:49Speaker 2: I'm 6'1, but my muscles were like 5'9. Because I
- 30:52Speaker 2: just started, the muscle tightness from my psoas going to
- 30:56Speaker 2: my T12, I was just getting tighter. My quads, everything
- 30:59Speaker 2: getting tired from just stress, just stress in my life.
- 31:03Speaker 2: So the more I stressed my body with the workouts,
- 31:06Speaker 2: my lower body became out of balance. So I had
- 31:09Speaker 2: a bunch of stress fractures, a bunch of injuries going
- 31:12Speaker 2: through buds. And how I got through buds was they
- 31:16Speaker 2: gave me my third time was my last time going
- 31:18Speaker 2: through health week. I basically put a black sock on
- 31:21Speaker 2: at four o'clock in the morning and I would get
- 31:23Speaker 2: duct tape. I had I had numerous stress fractures on
- 31:26Speaker 2: both of my legs because my body was literally like
- 31:29Speaker 2: coming in on itself. And my legs were like, I
- 31:32Speaker 2: was pronating it really bad and putting stress on my shins.
- 31:37Speaker 2: And so I would put duct tape. I would duct
- 31:39Speaker 2: tape my feet and I would show you the top
- 31:40Speaker 2: of them where I have pressure ulcers that were the
- 31:43Speaker 2: size of quarters from, you know, how the ankle joint.
- 31:46Speaker 2: So the foot goes to the shin and how you
- 31:49Speaker 2: move this where the tape was so tight, it just
- 31:52Speaker 2: created a nice ulcer. right there, and I just kept
- 31:58Speaker 2: going through it.
- 31:59Speaker 1: So you just used that tape to just support your ankles?
- 32:01Speaker 2: Right, so I basically cast myself, and for the first 30,
- 32:04Speaker 2: 45 minutes, the pain was excruciating, but then it would
- 32:08Speaker 2: go numb, and I would go numb, and then that's
- 32:11Speaker 2: how I got through.
- 32:12Speaker 1: Wow. Did that do any long-term damage?
- 32:17Speaker 2: Yeah, I've been out for five years. So I retired
- 32:20Speaker 2: from the, I did 21 years in the military. I
- 32:22Speaker 2: did time in the Air Force and I did about
- 32:23Speaker 2: 16 years in the Navy.
- 32:25Speaker 1: How old are you?
- 32:26Speaker 2: 43.
- 32:27Speaker 1: Sounds like you're 30.
- 32:28Speaker 2: That's good. That's good.
- 32:29Speaker 1: You really, you look very young for your age.
- 32:31Speaker 2: Whenever I'm stressed, I get after it. I fix whatever's
- 32:35Speaker 2: bothering me. So I, basically over the last five years,
- 32:41Speaker 2: everything I've done in my life, I did it being
- 32:43Speaker 2: very unhealthy. Okay. I'd never talked about it. I just
- 32:46Speaker 2: kept going. And it cost me pretty much, I was
- 32:49Speaker 2: choking my insides out. Adrenal issues, tons of adrenal issues,
- 32:53Speaker 2: thyroid issues, anything with the endocrine system pretty much shut
- 32:56Speaker 2: down on me. My organs were pretty much shutting down.
- 32:59Speaker 2: And I went from a guy who could run 205
- 33:01Speaker 2: miles to a guy who couldn't get out of bed.
- 33:03Speaker 2: And the doctors were trying to search what was wrong.
- 33:05Speaker 2: That's when I figured out the psoas muscle. No one
- 33:07Speaker 2: figured it out. And I hit it by accident. So,
- 33:13Speaker 2: I've missed two days of stretching out in five years.
- 33:15Speaker 2: And so what happened was all the shit I did
- 33:18Speaker 2: to myself, the stress I was under, physical, mental, all
- 33:21Speaker 2: kind of shit, it just choked me out from the inside.
- 33:25Speaker 2: And doctors put me on all kind of medications. And
- 33:28Speaker 2: the medication started doing the exact opposite.
- 33:30Speaker 1: What kind of shit?
- 33:31Speaker 2: I was on DHEA. I was on some different things
- 33:36Speaker 2: for my estrogen, different things for my... I was on
- 33:40Speaker 2: anything to do with your endocrine system. Thyroid medicine. Good God.
- 33:47Speaker 2: I was on cortisol, all kind of shit to get
- 33:49Speaker 2: my stuff... I had like this lump in my throat
- 33:53Speaker 2: from like the heart was always, I couldn't run down
- 33:55Speaker 2: the street. My body was just jacked up. Couldn't sleep.
- 33:59Speaker 2: My whole body was just down, shutting down. I could
- 34:01Speaker 2: give you a lot more than that, but just to
- 34:02Speaker 2: give you an example, I was fucking dying. And so
- 34:05Speaker 2: I couldn't do anything. I went from a guy who
- 34:07Speaker 2: was this guy to a guy who can't do shit.
- 34:10Speaker 2: And doctors were like, I don't know what's wrong with you, man.
- 34:11Speaker 2: You know, your labs are this. Is it PTSD? What's
- 34:15Speaker 2: going on? I knew it wasn't any of that shit.
- 34:18Speaker 2: So I sat in the bed one day and I realized, man,
- 34:20Speaker 2: my life is over. This is it. But it gave
- 34:22Speaker 2: me time to reflect on everything I had accomplished. I'd
- 34:25Speaker 2: never taken time to reflect on the kid I was
- 34:29Speaker 2: to the man I am now. So honestly, the time
- 34:32Speaker 2: I wasn't working out, it was the best time of
- 34:34Speaker 2: my life because I got a chance to really reflect
- 34:36Speaker 2: back and be proud of who I became. I never
- 34:39Speaker 2: took time to do that. It was like one after another.
- 34:42Speaker 2: Get the fuck after it. Get after it. Get after it.
- 34:44Speaker 2: You ain't good enough. Get after it. Get after it. And, um,
- 34:48Speaker 2: I got halted. So anyway, this process went on for
- 34:51Speaker 2: a while. More medication. This isn't working. That's not working.
- 34:54Speaker 2: No doctor can figure it out. I'm like, fuck it.
- 34:57Speaker 2: I saw this doc about eight years before this happened.
- 35:01Speaker 2: And he was like, hey, man, you're so fucking tight.
- 35:03Speaker 2: I've never seen anybody in my life as tight as you.
- 35:06Speaker 2: You need 50,000 hours of stretching. He threw out some
- 35:10Speaker 2: crazy number. I was like, whatever. Stretching, you know, stretch.
- 35:14Speaker 2: Stretching is bad for you.
- 35:16Speaker 1: You thought stretching was bad for you?
- 35:17Speaker 2: Yeah, stretching was bad for me, man.
- 35:18Speaker 1: Why did you think that?
- 35:19Speaker 2: I read some article. You know, man, fuck stretching, man.
- 35:24Speaker 2: I worked out so hard. I didn't have time to stretch, man.
- 35:26Speaker 2: I was running 150 miles a week. I was biking
- 35:28Speaker 2: to work, man. I was getting after it, man. I
- 35:30Speaker 2: was working a full-time job. And stretching and doing that.
- 35:35Speaker 2: So my body was literally getting tighter and tighter, not
- 35:37Speaker 2: just from what I was doing. Oh, because you ran this. No,
- 35:39Speaker 2: it wasn't that, man. And so I said, you know what?
- 35:42Speaker 2: I'm going to try to stretch out. So I don't
- 35:45Speaker 2: do anything for like 10 minutes or, you know, I
- 35:48Speaker 2: don't do no six minute abs bullshit. So I started
- 35:50Speaker 2: stretching out one hour, hour and a half. Long story short, man,
- 35:54Speaker 2: I shaved my head almost every morning. And that bump
- 35:58Speaker 2: that was on the back of my fucking head, I
- 35:59Speaker 2: started realizing it was shrinking for some fucking reason. I
- 36:01Speaker 2: don't know why, because I shaved my head back and
- 36:04Speaker 2: I was like, it's getting smaller. The smaller that bump got,
- 36:07Speaker 2: the healthier I got. The smaller that bump got, I
- 36:10Speaker 2: was like, oh, hold up, motherfucker. What's going on? That
- 36:13Speaker 2: psoas muscle started getting more and more stretched out, more
- 36:15Speaker 2: and more relaxed. And over a period of five years,
- 36:18Speaker 2: I'm in the best shape of my damn life right
- 36:20Speaker 2: now from stretching out.
- 36:22Speaker 1: Wow.
- 36:23Speaker 2: That's all it was. I went from like, I can't
- 36:25Speaker 2: even count the medications I was on. Now I'm on
- 36:28Speaker 2: a very low dose thyroid pill, period.
- 36:31Speaker 1: Do you ever do yoga?
- 36:33Speaker 2: All the time, man. All the time. And if I
- 36:36Speaker 2: were to tell somebody one thing right now, man, that
- 36:39Speaker 2: psoas muscle and getting that hip flexor opened up, Because
- 36:43Speaker 2: we're all stressed the fuck out. It's so much worse
- 36:46Speaker 2: than others. It changed my life.
- 36:48Speaker 1: Yeah. How do you say Nick Gregorius? How do you
- 36:52Speaker 1: say his last name? The Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt from England.
- 36:57Speaker 1: The Greek fella. He has a great quote about yoga.
- 37:01Speaker 1: He said, yoga is a martial art you do against yourself. Yep.
- 37:04Speaker 1: It's a great way of putting it.
- 37:05Speaker 2: 100%.
- 37:06Speaker 1: It's what it feels like when you're in there, right?
- 37:08Speaker 2: 100%. And so you....
- 37:12Speaker 1: How many years ago was this? It was five years ago?
- 37:14Speaker 1: Five years ago. Where you couldn't do anything? And how
- 37:15Speaker 1: long was there a period where you couldn't work out
- 37:17Speaker 1: at all?
- 37:18Speaker 2: There was about, so I always tried to do something,
- 37:21Speaker 2: but I couldn't run hardly at all. I could run
- 37:22Speaker 2: maybe half a mile and all that heart shit would
- 37:25Speaker 2: happen and my heart would get AFib and all kinds
- 37:28Speaker 2: of stuff would happen. And I started just stretching and
- 37:30Speaker 2: also I tried to do pull-ups every now and then,
- 37:33Speaker 2: but everything was just, I didn't have the energy. I
- 37:36Speaker 2: didn't have anything. I mean, nothing was processing right for me.
- 37:39Speaker 1: So did you think that you had just broken your
- 37:41Speaker 1: body because you pushed it too hard?
- 37:42Speaker 2: 100%. I sat back in that bed that night, and
- 37:46Speaker 2: I had a lot of time to reflect. I said,
- 37:47Speaker 2: you know what? I was actually kind of proud of
- 37:49Speaker 2: myself in a very sick, twisted way. Even though people
- 37:54Speaker 2: don't understand it, I had to do what I had
- 37:56Speaker 2: to do. And I did it. I didn't tell you
- 38:00Speaker 2: how I got into ultra running. There's a lot of
- 38:03Speaker 2: things that... I pushed it extremely hard. I went way
- 38:08Speaker 2: beyond what I thought was capable. Like my first ultra
- 38:12Speaker 2: race I did, I was heavier. I was in Iraq.
- 38:15Speaker 2: You know, the Marcus Luttrell lone survivor. I was in buds.
- 38:18Speaker 2: I was in three hell weeks, as you know, as
- 38:20Speaker 2: I said a million times. And I knew a lot
- 38:22Speaker 2: of guys that died in the operation. I was at
- 38:24Speaker 2: free fall school with Morgan Luttrell, who was his twin brother,
- 38:27Speaker 2: during the Operation Red Wings, where Marcus Luttrell was the
- 38:30Speaker 2: lone survivor. I knew Marcus Luttrell well. And I was
- 38:33Speaker 2: about 200 some odd pounds. And I didn't run hardly
- 38:37Speaker 2: at all at this time. I was a SEAL, but
- 38:39Speaker 2: I was like a bodybuilder. And I did elliptical trainer
- 38:42Speaker 2: 20 minutes on Sunday. That's all I did. That's all
- 38:45Speaker 2: I did. Fuck that cardio stuff. I was never about
- 38:48Speaker 2: it until this happened. So that happened. And I was like, man,
- 38:52Speaker 2: I got to find a way to raise money for
- 38:54Speaker 2: these families. So I Googled the, I found a foundation,
- 38:58Speaker 2: Special Operations Warrior Foundation. And I Googled the 10 hardest
- 39:02Speaker 2: races in the world. I knew nothing about ultra running.
- 39:05Speaker 2: The first I'd ever run was 20 miles at one time.
- 39:08Speaker 2: And so what came up was the Badwater 135. 135-mile
- 39:12Speaker 2: run through Death Valley in the summertime. I thought it
- 39:15Speaker 2: was a fucking stage race. I didn't know people could
- 39:17Speaker 2: run 135 miles at one time. I had no idea
- 39:19Speaker 2: it was even possible.
- 39:19Speaker 1: What do you mean a stage race?
- 39:21Speaker 2: Where you run like 20 miles, camp out, and then
- 39:24Speaker 2: run 20 more until you get 135 miles.
- 39:26Speaker 1: Right.
- 39:27Speaker 2: So I wanted an ultra runner to know what an
- 39:28Speaker 2: ultra runner was I called the race director up Chris
- 39:30Speaker 2: Costman of the Badwater and he said are you an
- 39:34Speaker 2: ultra runner and I was like I don't know what
- 39:37Speaker 2: that is he goes have you run 100 miles in
- 39:39Speaker 2: 24 hours or less I was like no but I
- 39:41Speaker 2: said I'm a Navy SEAL I was in three hell
- 39:44Speaker 2: weeks I was a ranger I gave him some resume
- 39:45Speaker 2: he didn't give a shit he said I don't care
- 39:48Speaker 2: you gotta qualify for my race And the deadline was
- 39:51Speaker 2: up in two months for this Badwater race. And basically,
- 39:55Speaker 2: he said, there's two more races you can do to qualify.
- 39:58Speaker 2: And I might consider you in my race. We select
- 39:59Speaker 2: the top 90 athletes in the world. And you're not
- 40:01Speaker 2: even an ultra runner. But I like your cause. I
- 40:04Speaker 2: like what you're doing. He said, I'll call him up
- 40:06Speaker 2: on a Wednesday. And he goes, there's a race on
- 40:09Speaker 2: Saturday in San Diego. San Diego one day where you
- 40:13Speaker 2: run around a one-mile track for 24 hours. See how
- 40:15Speaker 2: many miles you can get. If you get 124 hours,
- 40:17Speaker 2: I will consider you in my race. I did the math,
- 40:21Speaker 2: 14-some minute mile. Fuck it, I can do that. Dumb
- 40:26Speaker 2: shit thinking, I'll tell you that right now. It was rough.
- 40:28Speaker 2: Worst thing I've been in my entire life was this race.
- 40:31Speaker 2: So I have my wife at the time, she's now
- 40:34Speaker 2: my ex-wife. We go to Walmart, get a blue lawn chair,
- 40:36Speaker 2: Ritz crackers, and MilePlex. That's what I'm going to have
- 40:39Speaker 2: for a 100-mile run. So show up at the start
- 40:42Speaker 2: line of this race. It was the AUA National Championships.
- 40:46Speaker 2: It's like the best ultra runners compete against each other
- 40:50Speaker 2: To see how many miles you can get in 24 hours.
- 40:52Speaker 2: And I'm this big bodybuilder looking guy with his shirt off.
- 40:55Speaker 1: How much did you weigh back then?
- 40:57Speaker 2: I would say I was at least 230.
- 41:00Speaker 1: At least.
- 41:00Speaker 2: It may have been more.
- 41:01Speaker 1: Than jacked.
- 41:02Speaker 2: Yeah. I was ripped the fuck up. Big old chest.
- 41:05Speaker 2: I was jacked up. There's a picture of me.
- 41:08Speaker 1: You definitely didn't look like someone who could run 100 miles.
- 41:10Speaker 2: Not at all. So basically, I start running. And I
- 41:14Speaker 2: get to about mile 40, mile 50. And I'm feeling
- 41:18Speaker 2: pretty good. I get to mile 70 and it was
- 41:23Speaker 2: the worst pain in my life. I sat down in
- 41:26Speaker 2: this blue lawn chair at mile 70 and my, the
- 41:30Speaker 2: Ritz crackers after mile 20 became Ritz cracker balls. I
- 41:33Speaker 2: wouldn't hydrate incorrectly. I didn't know what to do. I
- 41:36Speaker 2: was drinking mild plex for my nutrition because I couldn't
- 41:39Speaker 2: eat these Ritz crackers, have very minimal water, if any
- 41:41Speaker 2: at all. And I was just dying. So I sat
- 41:44Speaker 2: down in this blue lawn chair and As I was
- 41:46Speaker 2: watching all these runners go around in this circle, I
- 41:48Speaker 2: was all dizzy and lightheaded. Hadn't gone to the bathroom.
- 41:50Speaker 2: It's been about 12 hours. I went 70 miles in
- 41:52Speaker 2: about 12 hours, which is good. And I looked at
- 41:55Speaker 2: my ex-wife now, and I was like, I am fucked.
- 41:58Speaker 2: I started seeing like three of her. And once my
- 42:01Speaker 2: body stopped, my mind just went off. And I had
- 42:05Speaker 2: to go to the bathroom. And the bathroom was like
- 42:08Speaker 2: 20 feet away from me, if that. And I couldn't.
- 42:11Speaker 2: And so I sat there and peed blood down my
- 42:12Speaker 2: leg and started crapping up my back with 30 miles
- 42:15Speaker 2: to go. And my feet were broken. I was just
- 42:19Speaker 2: in the worst shape. Because once you stop running, not
- 42:22Speaker 2: running like that. I mean, I hadn't run in almost
- 42:24Speaker 2: a year. I was just doing bodybuilding stuff and 20
- 42:28Speaker 2: minutes on the elliptical trainer.
- 42:30Speaker 1: No running at all.
- 42:31Speaker 2: I probably ran no shit, no shit, no more than
- 42:35Speaker 2: 50 miles the whole year. That wasn't my thing. I
- 42:39Speaker 2: wanted to be like Jack. I didn't want to be
- 42:42Speaker 2: cardio guy. I wanted to be ripped, big, Navy SEAL guy.
- 42:47Speaker 2: And the day before this race, it's funny, this guy
- 42:51Speaker 2: named Joe Burns who put me through my whole weeks,
- 42:54Speaker 2: a SEAL guy, he's one of the hardest guys out there.
- 42:56Speaker 2: He was in the gym the Friday before I did
- 42:58Speaker 2: this race. And he was doing a full body squats, deadlifts,
- 43:02Speaker 2: power cleans. I said, fuck it, man. He's a guy
- 43:04Speaker 2: that proved me to do this race. He gave me
- 43:07Speaker 2: the approval to go do this race and signed off
- 43:10Speaker 2: on it. So I'm in the gym. I went in
- 43:12Speaker 2: there and did a full body, hardcore squats, deadlifts, and
- 43:15Speaker 2: everything with this guy. Because I knew he was going
- 43:18Speaker 2: to come watch me in this race. So I've always
- 43:21Speaker 2: been about, all right, man, you're going to see me
- 43:22Speaker 2: come in here and jack this weight, and tomorrow you're
- 43:24Speaker 2: going to watch me do a 100-mile run. What are
- 43:25Speaker 2: you going to think about that? So basically, I paid
- 43:31Speaker 2: for it. so he came out there with my favorite thing, chocolate,
- 43:34Speaker 2: you know, mini donuts, because he knew my story of
- 43:37Speaker 2: my past life, and brought the six mini donuts out there,
- 43:40Speaker 2: and I had my hat pulled down, and at mile 70, man,
- 43:42Speaker 2: it was torturous, and with blood down my leg, and
- 43:46Speaker 2: 30 miles to go, I started reaching the cookie jars, man,
- 43:52Speaker 2: I started pulling off all kind of stuff, I reached
- 43:55Speaker 2: in my mind, and A lot of us, when we
- 43:57Speaker 2: have bad times in life, even the hardest person in
- 43:59Speaker 2: the world, we forget how badass we are during that
- 44:02Speaker 2: hard time. I have a thing where I take a
- 44:05Speaker 2: couple seconds to reflect on. Hang on, man. You've been
- 44:08Speaker 2: through this. You've been through that. You overcame this, overcame that.
- 44:11Speaker 2: I don't ever close my mind to the fact that
- 44:13Speaker 2: this can't be done. And I knew I had to
- 44:16Speaker 2: get up. I needed nutrition. I needed hydration. I needed
- 44:19Speaker 2: to stop being dizzy. So that's the first thing I did.
- 44:22Speaker 2: I didn't panic on I had 30 more miles to
- 44:24Speaker 2: go to get 100. I started about to process. Slowly
- 44:28Speaker 2: but surely, I was able to stand up and I
- 44:30Speaker 2: was literally hobbling around this track, just walking. No running
- 44:34Speaker 2: at all. I couldn't run. My feet were in the
- 44:36Speaker 2: worst pain. This is the worst pain I've been in
- 44:37Speaker 2: my entire life. Nothing in any training is even comparable
- 44:41Speaker 2: to this last 30 miles. And what happened was my
- 44:46Speaker 2: ex-wife looked at me and she's like, man, we agreed
- 44:49Speaker 2: I'm not going to make the time. I was going
- 44:50Speaker 2: way too slow. And at that time, at mile 81,
- 44:55Speaker 2: something clicked. that I'll never probably be able to do
- 44:57Speaker 2: again when my mind, body, spirit, soul, everything just connected.
- 45:01Speaker 2: And my mind knew I wasn't fucking around anymore. It
- 45:04Speaker 2: knew I wasn't going to quit. It knew that guy
- 45:06Speaker 2: was dead and buried and gone. And I was going
- 45:09Speaker 2: to die out here on this fucking Walmart for whatever
- 45:12Speaker 2: reason why I was going to get through this motherfucker.
- 45:15Speaker 2: I didn't give a damn. There was no fucking crowds.
- 45:18Speaker 2: There was no trophy at the end. I wasn't even
- 45:20Speaker 2: in a race in my mind. It was nothing. It
- 45:24Speaker 2: wasn't about nothing. There was no nothing. It was a
- 45:26Speaker 2: bunch of people who didn't know who the fuck I was.
- 45:28Speaker 2: And it was me against me. And I used all
- 45:32Speaker 2: these different dark places to start bringing out light and
- 45:35Speaker 2: just fucking going deeper and deeper. Ended up running the
- 45:37Speaker 2: next 20 miles. I ran 101 miles. And I ran
- 45:39Speaker 2: the next 20 miles, ran, at about a 10-30 pace.
- 45:41Speaker 2: And I did 101 miles in 18 hours and 56 minutes.
- 45:44Speaker 2: Sat back down in that blue... port-a-potty now my chair
- 45:54Speaker 2: that got from Walmart and that's when the body realized
- 45:57Speaker 2: I was done and this great feeling came over me
- 46:01Speaker 2: but also the worst pain in my life I that's
- 46:04Speaker 2: when I took a humongous shit on myself literally like
- 46:07Speaker 2: I like a fucking log up my fucking back pissed
- 46:10Speaker 2: so much blood down and my wife was she was
- 46:13Speaker 2: a nurse and she was freaked out I couldn't get
- 46:16Speaker 2: up I couldn't stand up she backed this Camry on
- 46:19Speaker 2: the knoll of the grassy area I was at And
- 46:22Speaker 2: we were both lifters at the time, so she was
- 46:25Speaker 2: decently strong. I put my arms around her neck. She
- 46:27Speaker 2: got me to the backseat of the car, let the
- 46:29Speaker 2: windows down, kind of smelled like horrible shit. And I
- 46:32Speaker 2: had this poncho on because it was November in San Diego,
- 46:34Speaker 2: so I'm sitting there, jackhammer in the back of this car.
- 46:36Speaker 2: And she was terrified. I need to get to the doctor.
- 46:38Speaker 2: I need to get to the doctor. So I said,
- 46:40Speaker 2: just take me home. So we lived on the second
- 46:42Speaker 2: story or the second deck of this apartment complex in
- 46:46Speaker 2: San Diego. I got to the first deck, so I
- 46:49Speaker 2: get out of the car and I could stand up,
- 46:51Speaker 2: but with my arms around her neck. So I was
- 46:52Speaker 2: just leaning down because I was going to pass out.
- 46:55Speaker 2: I got to the first deck, went down, just couldn't
- 46:58Speaker 2: stand up anymore. Got around her neck, worked up my
- 47:02Speaker 2: way up the railing, got my arms around her neck again,
- 47:06Speaker 2: walked to the kitchen area, which was right in the
- 47:07Speaker 2: front door. I was laying on the poncho liner, crap
- 47:10Speaker 2: was everywhere. I managed, she helped me manage to get
- 47:14Speaker 2: into the tub, And it was like dirt was coming
- 47:18Speaker 2: out of my penis. This looked horrible. Just the grossest
- 47:20Speaker 2: thing in the world. It was the worst pain I
- 47:22Speaker 2: could ever, ever, ever be in in my life. And
- 47:26Speaker 2: the craziest thing, I'll tell you a story because it's
- 47:27Speaker 2: right now. I'm not sadistic. I'm not crazy. People may
- 47:30Speaker 2: think that. They may want to put a title on
- 47:32Speaker 2: me after hearing me because it makes them feel better.
- 47:35Speaker 2: Because they think, wow, this guy must be some special
- 47:38Speaker 2: or just fucked up crazy dude.
- 47:40Speaker 1: No.
- 47:41Speaker 2: I'm a guy that came from nothing. Anybody's capable of
- 47:43Speaker 2: doing shit like this. Anybody. Anybody. And I sat in
- 47:47Speaker 2: that tub. She put the water on me. She called
- 47:50Speaker 2: my mom up. And my mom was dating a doctor
- 47:52Speaker 2: at the time. The doctor said, you need to get
- 47:54Speaker 2: him to a hospital now. She came back in. All
- 47:57Speaker 2: I wanted to do was call Chris Costner on the phone,
- 47:59Speaker 2: the race director of Badwater, and said, I fucking did it.
- 48:01Speaker 2: So she said, I'm taking you to the doctor. I said, no,
- 48:03Speaker 2: let me sit here and enjoy this pain. She said,
- 48:06Speaker 2: what are you talking about? I said, you know, I go,
- 48:09Speaker 2: I need to go to the doctor. I realize that.
- 48:12Speaker 2: But I never thought it was humanly possible to do
- 48:17Speaker 2: what I did. I went 70 miles. And at 70 miles,
- 48:21Speaker 2: I was dead. I was at 100% what I thought
- 48:27Speaker 2: was 100%. I went 31 more miles after being in
- 48:33Speaker 2: the worst physical shape I've ever been in in my life.
- 48:37Speaker 2: And all that pain and suffering and things was going
- 48:40Speaker 2: through my fucking body. And I sat in that tub
- 48:43Speaker 2: and the wires hit me. And it was the most...
- 48:46Speaker 2: amazing feeling of accomplishment. And I want to be numb.
- 48:50Speaker 2: I want people to give me drugs in the, in
- 48:52Speaker 2: the numbness fucking pain. I wanted to, I did this
- 48:55Speaker 2: over as crazy as it sounds. It was the most
- 48:58Speaker 2: amazing moment of my entire life to overcome such, to
- 49:02Speaker 2: come from this kid who was mentally torched himself and
- 49:06Speaker 2: was tortured. It's all to this kid, to this guy
- 49:09Speaker 2: now who was able to overcome such amazing odds and
- 49:13Speaker 2: obstacles and, And I called Chris Cosmo, the race director
- 49:16Speaker 2: of Badwater, and he said, the idea of a 24-hour
- 49:19Speaker 2: race is to run 24 hours. hours. You only ran 19.
- 49:23Speaker 2: And he put doubt in my mind that he would
- 49:25Speaker 2: let me into Badwater. So a month later or so,
- 49:28Speaker 2: about a month and a half later, I went to
- 49:29Speaker 2: this race called the Hurt 100. It's a 100-mile race
- 49:33Speaker 2: in Hawaii, 26,000 feet of climbing.
- 49:34Speaker 1: That was all he said?
- 49:35Speaker 2: That's all he said.
- 49:37Speaker 1: It's so crazy.
- 49:38Speaker 2: I mean, he's a hardcore dude, but he didn't know
- 49:40Speaker 2: how fucked up I was. Right. And he said, he
- 49:44Speaker 2: didn't say, you know, he didn't say, no, I'm not
- 49:47Speaker 2: gonna let you in. He put enough doubt in my
- 49:49Speaker 2: mind and say, man, I got to do more. So
- 49:53Speaker 2: I was broken. I was broken bad. And like.
- 49:57Speaker 1: How long did it take you to recover physically?
- 49:59Speaker 2: The funniest thing about this, I don't tell that story
- 50:01Speaker 2: very often. I had signed up for, I'm getting to
- 50:03Speaker 2: that answer. It's right now. I went on deployment and
- 50:07Speaker 2: me and my wife and my mom signed up for
- 50:08Speaker 2: the first Las Vegas marathon down the strip of Las Vegas.
- 50:13Speaker 2: And that incident happened. So I ran 100 miles before
- 50:19Speaker 2: I ran a marathon. Two weeks later, roughly December 5th,
- 50:24Speaker 2: was this marathon that we all signed up for. I
- 50:26Speaker 2: couldn't walk. I could not walk. I was fucked up. So...
- 50:31Speaker 2: 10 days or 2 weeks after this 100 mile in
- 50:35Speaker 2: one race I did this marathon December 5th in Las
- 50:40Speaker 2: Vegas I said you know what it's the first one
- 50:41Speaker 2: I can't run maybe I can walk with my mom
- 50:45Speaker 2: so I tried to go out to this little knoll
- 50:47Speaker 2: around our grassy area in San Diego I tried to
- 50:49Speaker 2: run legs were broken I said fuck I can't even
- 50:51Speaker 2: I'm jacked can't do shit so I said you know
- 50:55Speaker 2: what maybe I'll watch you guys do the marathon and
- 50:58Speaker 2: I'll cheer you guys on whatever and I said I'll
- 51:00Speaker 2: try to walk with my mom December 5th happened. That
- 51:04Speaker 2: gun went off. 2005, 14 days after, I broke myself off.
- 51:10Speaker 2: And I qualified for the Boston Marathon. I ran a 308.
- 51:16Speaker 1: That's crazy.
- 51:17Speaker 2: And what's funny about it, I know people are here
- 51:18Speaker 2: to say this motherfucker. Even when I tell you the story,
- 51:21Speaker 2: I want to drop so many names.
- 51:24Speaker 1: Google it.
- 51:25Speaker 2: Look it up. I don't give a fuck. It almost
- 51:27Speaker 2: seems like I'm making my own story up. It does.
- 51:30Speaker 1: It almost seems like it to you?
- 51:32Speaker 2: It does. Like when I tell it, if I were
- 51:33Speaker 2: to hear somebody, like let's say I listen to, you know,
- 51:36Speaker 2: listen to your Joe Rogan's podcast. I heard some black
- 51:39Speaker 2: dude from fucking Brazil in the end talking about, this happened,
- 51:42Speaker 2: this happened, three hell weeks, ran to school, ran a
- 51:44Speaker 2: hundred miles, broke my feet, broke my body. I'm like,
- 51:47Speaker 2: this mother, he's the biggest fucking liar on the planet.
- 51:49Speaker 2: Ain't nobody doing that shit. Even when I tell my story,
- 51:53Speaker 2: It almost sounds like some made-up shit.
- 51:55Speaker 1: What sounds so crazy is you ran 100 miles before
- 51:58Speaker 1: you ever ran a marathon. Then you didn't run again
- 52:00Speaker 1: at all, and you still qualified for the Boston Marathon.
- 52:03Speaker 1: So you ran a 308 for the first marathon you
- 52:08Speaker 1: ever did, two weeks after you ran 100 miles with
- 52:11Speaker 1: no training and nothing in between.
- 52:13Speaker 2: But it gets better than that. You can see my
- 52:16Speaker 2: training log that I actually posted up. So that's when
- 52:19Speaker 2: I started training for... The Hurt 100. So basically what
- 52:25Speaker 2: happened was after that, I had about four weeks.
- 52:28Speaker 1: What did it feel like to run that. 308 if
- 52:30Speaker 1: you could barely walk?
- 52:32Speaker 2: When that gun went off, something went off in my head.
- 52:36Speaker 2: And I didn't feel that much pain at all. Afterwards,
- 52:40Speaker 2: I did. But something happened where I was like, the
- 52:43Speaker 2: gun went off and that thing came back. Like, all right, man.
- 52:48Speaker 1: What if.
- 52:50Speaker 2: Because I wanted to qualify for Boston. That was my goal.
- 52:53Speaker 2: But I was jacked up. And I didn't run as
- 52:58Speaker 2: much as I should have at all over my Iraq training.
- 53:02Speaker 2: I hit the weights. But my goal was, when I
- 53:05Speaker 2: signed up for it a year early, I wanted to
- 53:08Speaker 2: qualify for Boston, which was a 310.59. And I was like,
- 53:12Speaker 2: what if you can qualify for Boston, man? So what
- 53:15Speaker 2: helped me out, I just ran 101 miles. what the
- 53:19Speaker 2: fuck is 26 miles to me now? So the mindset
- 53:22Speaker 2: going into it was like, I ran 75 more miles
- 53:26Speaker 2: in this. So I used it to my advantage. So
- 53:29Speaker 2: after that happened, I ran with my feet pretty much broken.
- 53:32Speaker 2: I would go to the physical therapist and they had
- 53:35Speaker 2: this compression tape. Compression tape helped because my feet were
- 53:39Speaker 2: pretty bad off. And I would run 70, 80, 100
- 53:42Speaker 2: mile weeks. And then I went to the Hurt 100,
- 53:45Speaker 2: racing Hawaii, 26,000 feet of climbing over 100 miles. Probably
- 53:50Speaker 2: one of the top five hardest 100-mile races in the world.
- 53:53Speaker 2: I wasn't even a real runner. I had banked a
- 53:56Speaker 2: lot of miles by the last two and a half,
- 53:59Speaker 2: about two months. But I wasn't a runner. Went out
- 54:02Speaker 2: there and got through the race. Did it in 33 hours.
- 54:05Speaker 2: Was the ninth place finisher. Not many people finished that year.
- 54:09Speaker 2: And I qualified for Badwater and got in. And I
- 54:12Speaker 2: went on to lose weight. And trained hard, and I
- 54:15Speaker 2: got fifth my first year and went back my second
- 54:16Speaker 2: year and got third.
- 54:18Speaker 1: When you say you lost weight, what were you eventually weighing?
- 54:22Speaker 2: So I went to the race about 190, 195.
- 54:24Speaker 1: So you lost quite a bit from your bodybuilding time.
- 54:27Speaker 2: Right.
- 54:27Speaker 1: That's over a short period of time.
- 54:29Speaker 2: Right. How did you lose all that weight? Once again,
- 54:31Speaker 2: I just worked out hard. I stopped taking my protein
- 54:34Speaker 2: so much. I got off. I was on this stuff
- 54:37Speaker 2: called Nitrotec. And I got off all the protein stuff.
- 54:41Speaker 2: I just started. I stopped hitting the weights so hard.
- 54:44Speaker 2: And I just became a running fool. Became the Black
- 54:48Speaker 2: Forest Gut Man, pretty much. Pretty simple, man. That's what happened.
- 54:52Speaker 1: Now, when you say you were using compression tape on
- 54:54Speaker 1: your feet and that your feet were jacked up, what
- 54:56Speaker 1: was the extent of the injuries?
- 54:58Speaker 2: So basically, because of my pronation that I never figured
- 55:01Speaker 2: out because of my psoas muscles, I always had issues
- 55:05Speaker 2: with stretch fractures, shin splints. So I put a lot
- 55:08Speaker 2: of pressure on the inside of my ankles. And so
- 55:11Speaker 2: there's this tendon that goes up the backside of your,
- 55:15Speaker 2: I don't know if it's your fibula, or the backside
- 55:19Speaker 2: of that little bone, or the backside of your foot.
- 55:21Speaker 2: It goes right alongside that bone. And that thing was
- 55:25Speaker 2: just so flared up on both sides that even this
- 55:29Speaker 2: flexing my foot was just killing me. So I realized
- 55:32Speaker 2: when you cast that thing up, casting my feet always
- 55:36Speaker 2: helped me out because it locked my foot into a
- 55:39Speaker 2: position that wouldn't make me pronate as much. So between
- 55:43Speaker 2: the casting of that, and if you watch the Badwater
- 55:45Speaker 2: video of 2006, you'll see me crossing the finish line
- 55:49Speaker 2: with this compression tape, literally like flying on my ankles
- 55:53Speaker 2: because I went to the race with compression tape on
- 55:55Speaker 2: my ankles. And so basically, I'd have that on my ankles.
- 56:01Speaker 2: I had inserts in my shoes and also this wedge
- 56:06Speaker 2: on the back heel of my left foot So then
- 56:09Speaker 2: it would keep me from pronating that heel so much.
- 56:11Speaker 2: So I had all that on just to go run.
- 56:13Speaker 2: And I ran my ass off and went to Badwater
- 56:16Speaker 2: 2006 with compression tape on my feet and walked a lot,
- 56:23Speaker 2: but I got third place.
- 56:24Speaker 1: Do you always run with regular running shoes?
- 56:26Speaker 2: I do, yeah. So now I don't have those issues anymore.
- 56:29Speaker 2: All the stretching has opened my body up to how
- 56:32Speaker 2: it should have been. So my alignment is pretty good.
- 56:35Speaker 2: It's not perfect. So now I just run in regular
- 56:37Speaker 2: running shoes now. No more compression tape, no more none
- 56:40Speaker 2: of that stuff. So if you see now, if you
- 56:41Speaker 2: look down there, you'll see the compression tape. And you'll
- 56:44Speaker 2: see my ex-wife here in a second taking the compression
- 56:47Speaker 2: tape off of me. She's doing it right now. See
- 56:50Speaker 2: her right now? Yeah. See the tape? Yeah. So that's
- 56:53Speaker 2: the tape right there that I had to wear every
- 56:54Speaker 2: day of my life to run.
- 56:56Speaker 1: Wow.
- 56:56Speaker 2: So as you see, the story may be kind of unbelievable,
- 57:00Speaker 2: but there's some proof right there. Fuck, man.
- 57:03Speaker 1: That was so painful.
- 57:05Speaker 2: Yeah, I was pretty fucked up. As you see right now,
- 57:07Speaker 2: me trying to get up. Oh, man. Yeah, I'm pretty
- 57:10Speaker 2: destroyed right there.
- 57:11Speaker 1: What is the most amount of miles you've ever run?
- 57:14Speaker 2: At one time?
- 57:15Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 57:16Speaker 2: 205 in 39 hours.
- 57:17Speaker 1: Wow.
- 57:18Speaker 2: Yep, nonstop.
- 57:22Speaker 1: Yeah, I've had quite a few people on. I've met
- 57:24Speaker 1: quite a few people now over the last year or
- 57:26Speaker 1: so that have run ultras. Courtney DeWalter, you know who
- 57:29Speaker 1: she is? She won the Moab 230. Yeah, I heard
- 57:33Speaker 1: about her. 240, rather.
- 57:33Speaker 2: Heard about her.
- 57:34Speaker 1: Yeah, she beat all the men by 22 miles, something
- 57:38Speaker 1: like that. Some crazy thing. She was first place winner.
- 57:41Speaker 1: She beat everybody else.
- 57:42Speaker 2: That's sick.
- 57:42Speaker 1: Second place winner. And with her, I mean, you would
- 57:46Speaker 1: never believe it. When you talk to her, she seems
- 57:49Speaker 1: so normal.
- 57:49Speaker 2: Right.
- 57:50Speaker 1: She drinks beer and eats nachos and eats candy.
- 57:52Speaker 2: That's ultra on her, man.
- 57:54Speaker 1: She's just silly and she's fun.
- 57:56Speaker 2: Yep.
- 57:56Speaker 1: And there's no demon there.
- 57:58Speaker 2: No.
- 57:58Speaker 1: I'm like waiting to meet a demon. Right. You know?
- 58:00Speaker 1: I'm like, where's your demon?
- 58:02Speaker 2: Right. Like, how are you getting through that?
- 58:04Speaker 1: Her demon's a quiet demon.
- 58:05Speaker 2: Right.
- 58:06Speaker 1: It's there. It has to be there.
- 58:08Speaker 2: There's something there.
- 58:08Speaker 1: It has to be. There's no other people that, everybody
- 58:11Speaker 1: I know that can do that has a demon.
- 58:13Speaker 2: A lot of us don't want to admit to shit. Yeah.
- 58:15Speaker 2: We got them.
- 58:16Speaker 1: Oh, 100%. It has to be.
- 58:18Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 58:18Speaker 1: So when you do this and you qualify and you
- 58:24Speaker 1: do that race in Hawaii, they just let you in
- 58:27Speaker 1: after that?
- 58:28Speaker 2: No. So the race in Hawaii, yeah, I actually called
- 58:31Speaker 2: the race director up and there wasn't like a big time,
- 58:34Speaker 2: like I didn't have 100 mile race, I believe, as
- 58:36Speaker 2: I had.
- 58:36Speaker 1: Right. And so, you know, 100 mile, you did the
- 58:39Speaker 1: Boston or you did the Vegas marathon.
- 58:42Speaker 2: Yeah. So I did 100 mile, 101 miles. The Vegas
- 58:45Speaker 2: marathon went to hurt 100, did that 100 miler.
- 58:48Speaker 1: And all this is in a very short amount of time.
- 58:50Speaker 2: Yeah. So November was the first 100 miler. December was
- 58:53Speaker 2: the 26 miler in Las Vegas. January was the next
- 58:59Speaker 2: 100 mile in Hawaii.
- 59:00Speaker 1: Do you know how fucking crazy that is? Like say
- 59:02Speaker 1: if I was your friend and I called you up
- 59:03Speaker 1: on October 20th and I go, hey man, how many
- 59:05Speaker 1: times you run? You're like, ah, I run every now
- 59:07Speaker 1: and then.
- 59:07Speaker 2: You want to see something crazy? I don't know if
- 59:08Speaker 2: you can pull it up or not, but if you
- 59:09Speaker 2: can pull up my race schedule for 2007 just pull
- 59:11Speaker 2: up david goggins race results you're gonna see something real
- 59:14Speaker 2: crazy in a second this ain't this is good and
- 59:17Speaker 2: i gotta show you proof because why i know my
- 59:20Speaker 2: story doesn't make any sense but just look at the
- 59:22Speaker 2: dates of these races and we're gonna show it to
- 59:25Speaker 2: you in a second it's um Just look at the
- 59:28Speaker 2: 100 miles and 50 miles back-to-back weekends, how many weekends
- 59:31Speaker 2: there were between races. So if you look right here,
- 59:34Speaker 2: you can't really see it. So if you look at 2007,
- 59:36Speaker 2: you got to go all the way down. Keep on going, 2007.
- 59:40Speaker 2: See all those races there? Okay, get to right there.
- 59:44Speaker 2: So 100-miler Hawaii. Oh, Jesus Christ. Two weeks later, three
- 59:48Speaker 2: weeks later, another one. That's 50-miler. 50-miler Hawaii. a month later.
- 59:53Speaker 2: Then you're looking at, what, 14 days later, another 50K.
- 59:57Speaker 2: 50 miler a month later. Then you look at less
- 1:00:01Speaker 2: than a month, another 50 miler. 53 miler in June.
- 1:00:06Speaker 2: July was another 100 miler. Badwater was literally, Badwater was
- 1:00:10Speaker 2: a month after I did that 100 miler, 135 miler.
- 1:00:13Speaker 2: Leadville was less than a month after Badwater. The Plain
- 1:00:18Speaker 2: 100 was three weeks after Leadville. Angel's Crest was 10 days,
- 1:00:24Speaker 2: a week after that 100 miler. The Bear 100 was, what,
- 1:00:29Speaker 2: 13 days after that 100 miler? Jesus Christ. And then
- 1:00:33Speaker 2: I ran the 200, it said 203.5, but I didn't run,
- 1:00:36Speaker 2: it was 205 miles I ran there. But what's not
- 1:00:39Speaker 2: in there was that McNaughton race I did in 2000,
- 1:00:42Speaker 2: so that 150 mile race. I also did in 2007
- 1:00:46Speaker 2: that wasn't listed. So that was just my 2007 year.
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: That's insane.
- 1:00:51Speaker 2: Yeah, so.
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: Do you think that is what fucked your body up?
- 1:00:53Speaker 2: No.
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: No?
- 1:00:54Speaker 2: No. Because I still run the same mileage now. What
- 1:00:58Speaker 2: fucked my body up was Hell Week.
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: Really?
- 1:01:01Speaker 2: Oh, yeah. You don't go through three Hell Weeks in
- 1:01:03Speaker 2: one year. So what happened was when I realized that
- 1:01:05Speaker 2: my body was really jacked up was I was a
- 1:01:08Speaker 2: big-time squatter. Loved squatting. And... I went through the first
- 1:01:13Speaker 2: hell week, got messed up. Second hell week, I got
- 1:01:15Speaker 2: all the way through. Then third hell week, I got
- 1:01:16Speaker 2: all the way through. And my third hell week, we
- 1:01:18Speaker 2: had a guy die on Thursday. And then that hell week,
- 1:01:21Speaker 2: and I graduated. How did he die? Pulmonary edema. It
- 1:01:24Speaker 2: was cold. His name was John Skopp. Cold as fuck
- 1:01:28Speaker 2: hell week. The Pacific Ocean was never warm. And it
- 1:01:32Speaker 2: rained the whole time. The whole time it just rained.
- 1:01:35Speaker 2: And he pretty much just drowned in his own fluid
- 1:01:37Speaker 2: pretty much. We were in the pool doing some evolution.
- 1:01:40Speaker 2: He sunk to the bottom. His temperature was hot. He
- 1:01:44Speaker 2: missed a lot of Hell Week for getting pulled out
- 1:01:46Speaker 2: for different stuff. He wouldn't go quit. And he ended
- 1:01:48Speaker 2: up dying in Hell Week. But, yeah, so anyway, after
- 1:01:52Speaker 2: Hell Week ended, I wanted to go back to the gym.
- 1:01:56Speaker 2: You know, so second phase happened, dive phase. Like, I
- 1:01:58Speaker 2: could get back in the gym, start jacking my weight.
- 1:02:00Speaker 2: I love jacking weight. And I realized I couldn't squat.
- 1:02:04Speaker 2: So I went from squatting a lot to where I
- 1:02:05Speaker 2: couldn't even squat the bar because my lower back was
- 1:02:08Speaker 2: all fucked up. And I was like, I don't know
- 1:02:09Speaker 2: what's going on. It was cause this, this muscle. So
- 1:02:13Speaker 2: in hell week, your hip flexors are so, and I
- 1:02:16Speaker 2: went through so many of them so fast. And so
- 1:02:18Speaker 2: the hardest part of buds, I went through three times, not,
- 1:02:22Speaker 2: not the hell week part. That's one of the hardest parts,
- 1:02:24Speaker 2: but it was the initial part of the, where everybody
- 1:02:27Speaker 2: sees on TV, the log PT, the surf torture, the
- 1:02:31Speaker 2: dad gone boats over your head, law, all that shit.
- 1:02:33Speaker 2: I went through that person three times in one year. And, um,
- 1:02:38Speaker 2: Over a period of time, my hip flexors got so
- 1:02:41Speaker 2: tight that it just jacked me up. It jacked me
- 1:02:44Speaker 2: up for my hip flexors. So always being so cold
- 1:02:47Speaker 2: and so stressed out and everything led up to it.
- 1:02:50Speaker 2: But this really was the part that I noticed I
- 1:02:53Speaker 2: could squat before Hell Week or before my first time
- 1:02:56Speaker 2: going to Bud's. After Bud's, I couldn't squat anymore.
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: Do you just think it might just be because your
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: body was exhausted?
- 1:03:05Speaker 2: No. For 12 years, I would go back and tough
- 1:03:09Speaker 2: it out. Like with Joe Burns, he would squat. So
- 1:03:12Speaker 2: I said, fuck, I'm going to squat with Joe Burns.
- 1:03:14Speaker 2: But I just couldn't squat because that muscle was attached
- 1:03:17Speaker 2: to your T12.
- 1:03:18Speaker 1: So what was it doing to you?
- 1:03:19Speaker 2: Was it locking up? It was just pulling. So it
- 1:03:22Speaker 2: made my hips feel like I couldn't sink my ass.
- 1:03:25Speaker 2: I couldn't sink. So it was just incredible pain. And
- 1:03:28Speaker 2: then with the weight pushing me down and then trying
- 1:03:31Speaker 2: to push up, The pain was just too much.
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: So this is all range of motion issues.
- 1:03:36Speaker 2: All range of motion issues, yeah.
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: Wow, that's an important thing. For my friend Cam Haynes,
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: who doesn't stretch, he's another friend of mine who runs
- 1:03:44Speaker 1: ultra races. He ran that Moab 240. He's run the
- 1:03:48Speaker 1: Bigfoot 205. He's run a few of those.
- 1:03:50Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: I know he's listening. Go stretch, dude.
- 1:03:53Speaker 2: Yeah, support, man.
- 1:03:55Speaker 1: Especially if you're working that hard, right? If you're doing
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: that much.
- 1:03:57Speaker 2: Yeah, you're definitely locking up.
- 1:03:59Speaker 1: He could barely touch his toes.
- 1:04:01Speaker 2: Yeah, that's not a good thing.
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: That's not good, right?
- 1:04:03Speaker 2: No.
- 1:04:03Speaker 1: No.
- 1:04:03Speaker 2: It comes back to hurt you inside pretty soon.
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: Now, how flexible are you now? Because I would imagine
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: you're probably a fucking ballerina at this point because knowing
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: your brain.
- 1:04:11Speaker 2: I'm trying to get there. I'm trying to get there,
- 1:04:13Speaker 2: so I stretch every night for at least two hours.
- 1:04:15Speaker 1: There's a thing that people say that always piss me
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: off because I'm pretty flexible. They say, oh, you're naturally flexible.
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: People have a natural threshold. They're like, No, they don't.
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: Like a doctor told me that. I go, you don't
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: know what you're talking about. I'm like, you don't know
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: what you're talking about because most people don't push themselves
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: past that pain, that stretch pain.
- 1:04:31Speaker 2: Right. People want to put a title on you, man.
- 1:04:33Speaker 2: It's easier for them. Oh, you're just fucking natural.
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: Exactly.
- 1:04:35Speaker 2: You're natural.
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: Exactly.
- 1:04:37Speaker 2: No, you don't work hard enough, motherfucker.
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: Yeah. People built like chimps aren't usually flexible.
- 1:04:41Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:04:42Speaker 1: You have to force yourself to do that.
- 1:04:44Speaker 2: That's right.
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: And I know it because I had a friend, my
- 1:04:46Speaker 1: friend Tom Radogna. He was a football player. Jack, big,
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: thick dude. Terrible flexibility. He was taking Taekwondo with me.
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: And over the course of a couple years, I saw
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: that dude eventually develop a full split.
- 1:04:57Speaker 2: There you go.
- 1:04:57Speaker 1: And he just did it through his mind. Everybody else
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: was done training. That guy would be on the mat.
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: Constantly stretching always working out because he had built his
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: body up so strong for all those years of squatting
- 1:05:08Speaker 1: and lifting Yep, that he just you know, he was
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: all tense. Everything was just like this super powerful, right?
- 1:05:14Speaker 1: But all like very tense.
- 1:05:15Speaker 2: That's why I stopped, you know, that's why I never
- 1:05:17Speaker 2: stretched because I wanted that strength Yeah, yeah, you want
- 1:05:20Speaker 2: that tight muscle, but no, I don't think it is stupid.
- 1:05:22Speaker 1: Yeah, I think you're not supposed to stretch before you
- 1:05:25Speaker 1: do big physical activities because I think it does like
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: weaken you somewhat and But I don't think being flexible
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: overall makes you weaker.
- 1:05:32Speaker 2: Not at all. Yeah. Not at all.
- 1:05:34Speaker 1: What certainly doesn't for martial arts because you need that
- 1:05:37Speaker 1: flexibility to have leg dexterity to be able to kick.
- 1:05:40Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:05:40Speaker 1: It's got to be fluid where it's not tightened up
- 1:05:42Speaker 1: by the restriction of the motion of your body.
- 1:05:45Speaker 2: I get it. It's truth.
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: I just think people are, for whatever reason, and I'm
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: one of those, I drone on too much about yoga.
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: I'm like one of those vegans. It's like, You got
- 1:05:54Speaker 1: to do it, man.
- 1:05:55Speaker 2: Just try it.
- 1:05:56Speaker 1: I get annoyed. Like a born-again Christian or something.
- 1:05:59Speaker 2: I'm getting that way now, man. I'm getting that way now.
- 1:06:01Speaker 1: For anybody who does anything hard, like if you do
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: anything like weightlifting type shit or martial arts type shit
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: where it's just everything's explosion. It's lifting.
- 1:06:13Speaker 2: It's heavy.
- 1:06:13Speaker 1: It's push, push, push. Yoga just will balance your shit out.
- 1:06:18Speaker 2: Yeah, it will.
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: It really will, man. And it's all these people that
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: resist it. Like there was some article recently that was
- 1:06:24Speaker 1: something along the lines of hot yoga is just trendy nonsense.
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: I read that. And then even in the article, it
- 1:06:30Speaker 1: talked about that there might be some benefits in terms
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: of like the strengthening your arteries. And they didn't even
- 1:06:36Speaker 1: mention heat shock proteins. There's a study going on right now.
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: I believe it's at Harvard. One of my friends was
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: telling me about it where they're trying to find the
- 1:06:44Speaker 1: benefits of 90-minute hot yoga classes. Because they think it
- 1:06:48Speaker 1: might mirror the observed benefits of sauna, which they already
- 1:06:52Speaker 1: know for a fact has big benefits because of your
- 1:06:56Speaker 1: body producing heat shock proteins to deal with the heat.
- 1:06:58Speaker 1: That's why I put that sauna in here, man. I
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: go in that fucker all the time.
- 1:07:01Speaker 2: Well, no one can tell me it doesn't work.
- 1:07:03Speaker 1: It's big.
- 1:07:04Speaker 2: It's proof positive. It changed my life. It wasn't a
- 1:07:06Speaker 2: medication or this or that. It was stretching.
- 1:07:09Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:07:09Speaker 2: It was yoga, stretching, all that stuff combined changed it.
- 1:07:12Speaker 1: Well, I just think it balances out your body in
- 1:07:14Speaker 1: those static poses where you're just holding the pose and,
- 1:07:18Speaker 1: It just works you out in a weird way.
- 1:07:21Speaker 2: 100%.
- 1:07:22Speaker 1: You just don't get lifting weights or hitting the bag
- 1:07:25Speaker 1: or anything else. You're just not going to get that
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: kind of working out.
- 1:07:27Speaker 2: I can't agree with you more.
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: And it's so difficult.
- 1:07:29Speaker 2: That's what's crazy. You switch your ass off.
- 1:07:31Speaker 1: You're in there with a bunch of housewives and shit,
- 1:07:33Speaker 1: and you're like, this is like the silent struggle.
- 1:07:35Speaker 2: It's humbling.
- 1:07:36Speaker 1: Nobody knows. No, it's humbling. If you see like two doorways, right?
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: And one of them is like fucking C.T. Ali Fletcher's
- 1:07:44Speaker 1: fucking super pump iron addict's gym, which is hard work.
- 1:07:48Speaker 1: And then right next to it is the yoga studio.
- 1:07:51Speaker 1: You're like, well, once you get done with all that
- 1:07:53Speaker 1: hard work, you'll go over to that yoga studio. No,
- 1:07:56Speaker 1: there's two different kinds of hard work going on.
- 1:07:58Speaker 2: It's no joke.
- 1:07:59Speaker 1: Two different kinds of hard work.
- 1:08:00Speaker 2: Yes, sir.
- 1:08:01Speaker 1: So what do you do now in terms of like
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: you got over this– Five years ago, you're in this
- 1:08:07Speaker 1: bad situation where your body's not working right. Now everything's
- 1:08:10Speaker 1: working great again.
- 1:08:11Speaker 2: Well, I had two heart surgeries also. Whoa. Yeah. So,
- 1:08:15Speaker 2: you know.
- 1:08:16Speaker 1: What was wrong with your heart?
- 1:08:17Speaker 2: So I had a hole in it. So, you know,
- 1:08:20Speaker 2: you're not supposed to have a hole in your heart
- 1:08:21Speaker 2: and be a SEAL. Were you born with it? I
- 1:08:24Speaker 2: was born with it. It went undetected. And me pushing
- 1:08:27Speaker 2: so hard. So in 2009, I was training for this
- 1:08:31Speaker 2: race across America. And I just couldn't go anymore. Another
- 1:08:35Speaker 2: pitfall in my life was the hole. And I was
- 1:08:38Speaker 2: pretty much off active duty seal for three years. You know,
- 1:08:41Speaker 2: I had two hearts. Them trying to fix it. So
- 1:08:43Speaker 2: the hole was significantly large.
- 1:08:44Speaker 1: Like how big?
- 1:08:46Speaker 2: They say it was as big as a quarter. I'm like,
- 1:08:48Speaker 2: how the hell is it as big as a quarter? Yeah,
- 1:08:50Speaker 2: that's a pretty big hole in your heart. Because they
- 1:08:52Speaker 2: had two helix patches. I'm like, that's impossible. The helix patches,
- 1:08:56Speaker 2: they're in my heart. So the two stents.
- 1:08:57Speaker 1: What is a helix patch?
- 1:08:59Speaker 2: It is like a. a little mesh very like what
- 1:09:02Speaker 2: they do.
- 1:09:02Speaker 1: For hernias like something like that.
- 1:09:04Speaker 2: Maybe something like that so they went up through my
- 1:09:06Speaker 2: femoral artery and they placed this patch.
- 1:09:08Speaker 1: They go through your artery?
- 1:09:09Speaker 2: Yeah, they went through my femoral artery.
- 1:09:11Speaker 1: Like with a camera?
- 1:09:12Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:09:13Speaker 1: Whoa.
- 1:09:14Speaker 2: No, the camera was down through my throat. Whoa. And
- 1:09:16Speaker 2: they put this catheter through my femoral artery that went
- 1:09:19Speaker 2: to my heart. They went and they took this helix patch,
- 1:09:25Speaker 2: they placed it in there, and then they found out
- 1:09:27Speaker 2: six months later that the hole wasn't covered up enough yet.
- 1:09:31Speaker 2: And the healer's patch was very damn big. So they
- 1:09:35Speaker 2: go back in there in 2010.
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: How does the patch adhere to your heart?
- 1:09:39Speaker 2: I guess your heart heals around the patch.
- 1:09:42Speaker 1: But how do they stick it in place?
- 1:09:44Speaker 2: I guess they put it where the hole's at, and
- 1:09:47Speaker 2: then it kind of like inflates where the hole is at.
- 1:09:51Speaker 2: And then that thing goes in there, and then it
- 1:09:53Speaker 2: kind of covers the hole, and then the heart. So
- 1:09:55Speaker 2: there's two things in my heart right now that the
- 1:09:58Speaker 2: heart just kind of covered up. Whoa.
- 1:10:00Speaker 1: Okay, so here's it. So there you go. Jamie's got
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: an image of it for us.
- 1:10:05Speaker 2: Whoa. Yeah.
- 1:10:06Speaker 1: So it's attached to this little probe. Right. And then
- 1:10:10Speaker 1: they put it over the area where the injury is. Wow,
- 1:10:14Speaker 1: that's insane.
- 1:10:15Speaker 2: Yeah, atrial septum defect that I had. Atrial septal defect. So, basically,
- 1:10:20Speaker 2: everything I'd done, I'd done. Thank God for medicine. Oh, shit.
- 1:10:23Speaker 2: It's crazy what they could do. I'd be done.
- 1:10:25Speaker 1: That's so crazy that they could do that.
- 1:10:26Speaker 2: Yeah. So, I was off active duty for three years. So,
- 1:10:30Speaker 2: I was in a recruiting area for three years trying
- 1:10:34Speaker 2: to get back on active duty. And that was my
- 1:10:37Speaker 2: life for three years, man.
- 1:10:38Speaker 1: So, they put that patch in.
- 1:10:40Speaker 2: Yep.
- 1:10:40Speaker 1: And now your heart's 100%? It's 100%. It's 100%.
- 1:10:41Speaker 2: Wow.
- 1:10:42Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:10:42Speaker 2: That's incredible. Yeah. I was losing... You know blood and
- 1:10:49Speaker 2: I was this I was a bad off Which.
- 1:10:51Speaker 1: Is amazing that you were able to do all that
- 1:10:53Speaker 1: with a hole in your heart.
- 1:10:54Speaker 2: That's what the doctors were saying, you know, because they
- 1:10:56Speaker 2: didn't know I was a seal So I went in
- 1:10:57Speaker 2: and the doctor that found the hole or he like
- 1:11:01Speaker 2: so they gave me ekgs all this stuff once again Man,
- 1:11:04Speaker 2: you it's after I ran like 205 miles, you know, right?
- 1:11:07Speaker 2: Like man, you're in great shape I'm, like man, I
- 1:11:10Speaker 2: just don't feel good Like walking up the stairs is
- 1:11:13Speaker 2: making me jacked up. So The doctor, Doc Shrek, he's like,
- 1:11:17Speaker 2: you know, gave me EKG. He goes, go to the doctor,
- 1:11:19Speaker 2: get an echocardiogram. So I'm in there getting echocardiogram, just
- 1:11:23Speaker 2: chilling out in there. And the guy's talking to me,
- 1:11:25Speaker 2: has this little wand in my heart. We're bullshitting about stuff.
- 1:11:28Speaker 2: And when people get quiet, that's fucking not good, man.
- 1:11:33Speaker 2: So he's in there, just has this wand in my heart,
- 1:11:35Speaker 2: chilling out. Yeah, man, what are you doing? Yeah, yeah,
- 1:11:37Speaker 2: what's going on? And he says, I'll be right back.
- 1:11:43Speaker 2: He goes and gets a doctor. Doctor comes in, puts
- 1:11:46Speaker 2: the thing on my heart. The doctor gets another doctor. Now,
- 1:11:51Speaker 2: I'm just freaking the fuck out. I'm like, okay, because
- 1:11:53Speaker 2: when it comes to your heart, you know, it's a
- 1:11:55Speaker 2: big deal. So they come back in, they say, hey,
- 1:11:57Speaker 2: we can stop the echocardiogram. I mean, they talk to
- 1:12:00Speaker 2: you out in the hallway. You have a hole in
- 1:12:02Speaker 2: your heart. And the guy didn't know that I was,
- 1:12:06Speaker 2: he knew I was a Navy guy, but I don't
- 1:12:07Speaker 2: think he knew I was a SEAL because not many
- 1:12:09Speaker 2: black guys are SEALs. And he had a conversation about,
- 1:12:11Speaker 2: you know, we got to fix this real quick. I said, yeah.
- 1:12:15Speaker 2: I mean, then I came up, I was the seal.
- 1:12:17Speaker 2: He said, man, you could have died jumping. You could
- 1:12:19Speaker 2: have died diving. You could have died and all this stuff.
- 1:12:22Speaker 2: Cause basically the hole in your heart, if it gets
- 1:12:25Speaker 2: plugged with something like anything, like, you know, let's say
- 1:12:27Speaker 2: you get a bubble from diving or something like that,
- 1:12:30Speaker 2: you're going to die. Right. So I, I, I call
- 1:12:34Speaker 2: it luck. I call it luck. So I got through
- 1:12:38Speaker 2: two surgeries. They put me back on.
- 1:12:39Speaker 1: They give you the first one, and then when do
- 1:12:42Speaker 1: they realize that it's not good enough?
- 1:12:44Speaker 2: So they take you back in. You got to get
- 1:12:45Speaker 2: a bubble study, a bubble test. So they literally send
- 1:12:49Speaker 2: bubbles that way, safe bubbles that way, to see if
- 1:12:52Speaker 2: the bubble goes through your heart. So they have this
- 1:12:56Speaker 2: echocardiogram again, and they hook you up, I think, to
- 1:12:59Speaker 2: IV or something like that, and they throw these bubbles
- 1:13:01Speaker 2: through your heart, and they see if it goes through.
- 1:13:05Speaker 2: After six months, when it should have been healed up
- 1:13:07Speaker 2: The bubble went through. So they had to tell me then, hey,
- 1:13:11Speaker 2: we got to, you know, you're not good to go.
- 1:13:15Speaker 2: So I had to take a year before I could
- 1:13:19Speaker 2: have another surgery. Because that patch had to be completely,
- 1:13:23Speaker 2: completely healed. Before they can go back in.
- 1:13:26Speaker 1: But all this time, you knew you had a hole.
- 1:13:28Speaker 2: Right. So they knew I had a hole because of
- 1:13:30Speaker 2: the heart surgery. Right.
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: But all this time, like when you're waiting for it
- 1:13:32Speaker 1: to heal, you know you have an extra hole.
- 1:13:34Speaker 2: Yes. I know I have a hole. Yes.
- 1:13:36Speaker 1: What were you allowed to do with your body then?
- 1:13:37Speaker 2: Well, at that time, they go, you know, do how
- 1:13:39Speaker 2: you feel comfortable. And so, you know, the hole is
- 1:13:44Speaker 2: not going to kill you right now. But you can't dive.
- 1:13:47Speaker 2: You can't jump. I pretty much wasn't a SEAL anymore.
- 1:13:49Speaker 2: So I was a recruiter for a period of time.
- 1:13:52Speaker 2: So basically... I was crazy about that. Before my second surgery,
- 1:13:57Speaker 2: I was actually training for Delta Force. I wanted to
- 1:14:02Speaker 2: go to Delta. And I was rucking, ruck running a lot.
- 1:14:06Speaker 2: And before my second... When ruck running, you mean you're
- 1:14:08Speaker 2: running with a pack on? Yeah, a pack on my
- 1:14:09Speaker 2: back with some weight on it.
- 1:14:10Speaker 1: How heavy is the pack?
- 1:14:11Speaker 2: 50, 60 pounds.
- 1:14:12Speaker 1: And you run with that on?
- 1:14:14Speaker 2: Well, you're supposed to hike or hump, like ruck humping.
- 1:14:17Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:14:17Speaker 2: I ran with it. Because, you know, that's what I did. Right.
- 1:14:22Speaker 2: So the day of, the day of heart surgery, I
- 1:14:26Speaker 2: did a ruck run.
- 1:14:28Speaker 1: Jesus Christ.
- 1:14:28Speaker 2: Because I knew I was going to be out of
- 1:14:30Speaker 2: commission for a while. So fuck it, man. I got
- 1:14:33Speaker 2: to get my last one in, dude.
- 1:14:35Speaker 1: Jesus Christ.
- 1:14:36Speaker 2: So all I could do, I have my training log.
- 1:14:38Speaker 2: So after my second heart surgery, all I could do
- 1:14:39Speaker 2: was walk. So I became an ultra walker. Wow. Fucking
- 1:14:43Speaker 2: walked my fucking ass off. And over a period of time,
- 1:14:46Speaker 2: it took a year for that thing to heal up
- 1:14:48Speaker 2: and to heal properly. You know, my first bubble study
- 1:14:50Speaker 2: after my second heart surgery came back negative or positive.
- 1:14:54Speaker 2: The bubble went through again.
- 1:14:56Speaker 1: Oh, no.
- 1:14:57Speaker 2: And they're going to crack me open.
- 1:14:58Speaker 1: Oh, man.
- 1:14:59Speaker 2: Over that period of time, my heart healed around that
- 1:15:01Speaker 2: thing nicely. And I passed the second bubble test.
- 1:15:04Speaker 1: So the first bubble test was how long after? A year?
- 1:15:07Speaker 2: It was. So the first bubble test after the first
- 1:15:09Speaker 2: surgery was six months.
- 1:15:10Speaker 1: And then you had to go through a full six
- 1:15:12Speaker 1: months after that for it to totally heal. Then you
- 1:15:15Speaker 1: have the second heart surgery. And when does the bubble
- 1:15:17Speaker 1: test fail after the second heart surgery?
- 1:15:19Speaker 2: It was about six months.
- 1:15:20Speaker 1: Jesus Christ.
- 1:15:21Speaker 2: And they said, and the doctor looked at me and said,
- 1:15:22Speaker 2: you know, I'm sorry to inform you, man. We have
- 1:15:25Speaker 2: to crack your chest open the next time they're really
- 1:15:27Speaker 2: getting there. And so I sat back thinking this could
- 1:15:29Speaker 2: be a third heart surgery. And then, um, that one,
- 1:15:34Speaker 2: they said, we have to wait for six months to
- 1:15:36Speaker 2: see if this thing's going to close up.
- 1:15:38Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:15:38Speaker 2: And I came back thinking, man, I'm about to get
- 1:15:40Speaker 2: cracked the fuck open. And that bubble, uh, Got pinned up, man. Wow.
- 1:15:45Speaker 2: Didn't go through.
- 1:15:46Speaker 1: Maybe you forced it through with your mind.
- 1:15:47Speaker 2: I know, right?
- 1:15:48Speaker 1: Pulls that bitch up. When you're visualizing.
- 1:15:51Speaker 2: That's it, man.
- 1:15:52Speaker 1: That's something to visualize. Holy shit, man. That is crazy.
- 1:15:56Speaker 1: It's crazy you went on a ruck run with a
- 1:15:58Speaker 1: hole in your heart, too.
- 1:15:59Speaker 2: I did it for several years. I said, fuck it.
- 1:16:01Speaker 2: I'm about to keep on going, man.
- 1:16:05Speaker 1: That's amazing. Now, after all said and done, everything's good now?
- 1:16:09Speaker 2: Yeah. I mean, I'm sure something must have popped up
- 1:16:11Speaker 2: in my fucking ass not to do that. You know,
- 1:16:13Speaker 2: everything's good right now. I'm always waiting for the next
- 1:16:15Speaker 2: thing to pop up, and I handle it the same way.
- 1:16:17Speaker 2: I always attack it. But, yeah, right now I'm in
- 1:16:19Speaker 2: the best shape. I'm 43 years old. Just turned 43
- 1:16:22Speaker 2: February 17th. I am in the best shape of my life.
- 1:16:26Speaker 2: I'm not knocking on wood because life, fuck it, life
- 1:16:28Speaker 2: comes at you, dude. So, fuck knocking on wood. Come
- 1:16:31Speaker 2: at me.
- 1:16:32Speaker 1: I mean, I would think that you would be a
- 1:16:33Speaker 1: go-to guy for injuries.
- 1:16:36Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:16:36Speaker 1: I've had them all, dude.
- 1:16:38Speaker 2: I've had them all.
- 1:16:40Speaker 1: When you broke the world record for chin-ups, didn't you
- 1:16:42Speaker 1: rip your arm apart?
- 1:16:43Speaker 2: Pull-ups, yeah. So if you pull up the picture, man,
- 1:16:45Speaker 2: there's a picture of my hand.
- 1:16:46Speaker 1: You'll see.
- 1:16:47Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 1:16:48Speaker 1: What is it? Pull-ups are hands out.
- 1:16:51Speaker 2: Yeah, hands out.
- 1:16:52Speaker 1: And chin-ups are hands forward.
- 1:16:53Speaker 2: Right, hands forward. So I fell twice before I finally
- 1:16:57Speaker 2: got it the third time. And the first time I
- 1:17:01Speaker 2: ripped the shit out of my forearm. And then the
- 1:17:04Speaker 2: second time, you'll see there's a picture of my hand,
- 1:17:09Speaker 2: and it's a third-degree burn. So that's my hand.
- 1:17:12Speaker 1: Oh, Jesus, man. What in the fuck is going on?
- 1:17:16Speaker 1: It looks like you got bit by a wolf.
- 1:17:17Speaker 2: So what's funny about that is you see that that
- 1:17:20Speaker 2: doesn't create after one pull-up. So if you can imagine
- 1:17:23Speaker 2: the pain, because you have one contact point.
- 1:17:26Speaker 1: That's it.
- 1:17:27Speaker 2: Like running, you can overcome it because you have these
- 1:17:29Speaker 2: big giant legs and it's different. When you have these
- 1:17:33Speaker 2: little fragile punk ass hands touching the bar, you know,
- 1:17:37Speaker 2: imagine 4,030 pull-ups. How many times you're coming on that
- 1:17:41Speaker 2: bar coming off? Right. And I weighed 207 pounds at
- 1:17:44Speaker 2: the time. So I was, I was a bigger guy.
- 1:17:46Speaker 2: I'm like 195 or 185 now. So I was almost,
- 1:17:49Speaker 2: I was 22 pounds heavier. So I was a lot
- 1:17:52Speaker 2: bigger than I am right there. Bam.
- 1:17:53Speaker 1: You look pretty sick.
- 1:17:54Speaker 2: Get that shit, man.
- 1:17:55Speaker 1: So you were doing it in sets of five?
- 1:17:58Speaker 2: Sets of five. So as you see, I have these
- 1:18:00Speaker 2: different people who are witnessing you. You have to have
- 1:18:04Speaker 2: your number there to make sure that you're, you know,
- 1:18:08Speaker 2: qualified for the Guinness Book of World Records. That's 14, 15.
- 1:18:10Speaker 2: I have a long way to go. I have another 4,015
- 1:18:13Speaker 2: pull-ups to go right there.
- 1:18:15Speaker 1: Jesus Christ.
- 1:18:16Speaker 2: So, yeah.
- 1:18:17Speaker 1: And how long did you do this over? 24 hours?
- 1:18:19Speaker 2: It was seven. So I broke it at 17.
- 1:18:21Speaker 1: Wow.
- 1:18:22Speaker 2: And I was fucking over it.
- 1:18:25Speaker 1: What did it feel like on the last chin up
- 1:18:27Speaker 1: you know what actually.
- 1:18:28Speaker 2: There's a video that we have and um i was
- 1:18:31Speaker 2: chasing this guy named stephen highland so this guy named
- 1:18:34Speaker 2: stephen highland had the record and the video is my
- 1:18:38Speaker 2: last three pulls before i broke the record i'm talking
- 1:18:40Speaker 2: so much shit to this motherfucker i'm like hey motherfucker
- 1:18:43Speaker 2: you thought i wasn't going to get it, huh? I
- 1:18:45Speaker 2: told you, bitch-ass motherfucker, I'm coming after you. I'm here now.
- 1:18:48Speaker 2: It's just me talking shit. It's a cool video, but
- 1:18:51Speaker 2: I felt nothing. I was just happy that I didn't
- 1:18:54Speaker 2: have to do any more. I did 67,000 pull-ups in
- 1:18:57Speaker 2: nine months in training for a record for 4,000. And
- 1:19:02Speaker 2: the failures, so I did the first time in September,
- 1:19:06Speaker 2: failed miserably on the day, so I did 2,588 or
- 1:19:07Speaker 2: some shit like that. Failed miserably for millions of people.
- 1:19:12Speaker 2: Two months later, November, tried again, failed again. Two months later,
- 1:19:18Speaker 2: in January 19th, I finally fucking got it. So after
- 1:19:22Speaker 2: I got it, it wasn't like I'm happy. It was like,
- 1:19:25Speaker 2: I ain't got to do more fucking pull-ups anymore.
- 1:19:27Speaker 1: Roger that.
- 1:19:27Speaker 2: That's all it was. I had to fucking check that
- 1:19:31Speaker 2: bitch off, man.
- 1:19:32Speaker 1: But you were doing them when I got here today.
- 1:19:34Speaker 2: You know why? Because now it's a part of me, dude.
- 1:19:36Speaker 2: It's a part of me, man. I don't like doing them,
- 1:19:38Speaker 2: so we got to get some, we got to knock
- 1:19:40Speaker 2: some out.
- 1:19:40Speaker 1: You don't like doing them, so you got to do them.
- 1:19:42Speaker 2: That's my whole life.
- 1:19:43Speaker 1: Isn't it like someone gets drunk on a certain whiskey,
- 1:19:46Speaker 1: like if they smell it, they'll get disgusted? Right. Like
- 1:19:49Speaker 1: Jägermeister or something like that. They smell it and they'll, ugh. Right.
- 1:19:52Speaker 1: Is that what it's like with you with chin-ups?
- 1:19:54Speaker 2: With a lot of things.
- 1:19:55Speaker 1: With pull-ups?
- 1:19:55Speaker 2: With a lot of things.
- 1:19:56Speaker 1: With a lot of things now, right?
- 1:19:57Speaker 2: I don't like running. I don't like, and people don't
- 1:19:58Speaker 2: believe it, but I was a big guy twice in
- 1:20:02Speaker 2: my life. So hence the reason why I just don't
- 1:20:05Speaker 2: like running, man. It hurts. It's brutal. It sucks going
- 1:20:07Speaker 2: out and I'm going to be gone for two hours
- 1:20:09Speaker 2: or I'm going to be gone for 39 hours.
- 1:20:12Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:20:12Speaker 2: Running on a one mile track. Fuck. I'm not crazy, man.
- 1:20:16Speaker 1: It sucks.
- 1:20:18Speaker 2: I mean, you know, people put me in this category
- 1:20:19Speaker 2: of you must be some crazy guy who loves it. No, man. No.
- 1:20:24Speaker 2: That's why I do it, though. That's the only way
- 1:20:25Speaker 2: to callous your fucking brain, man. It's the only way
- 1:20:27Speaker 2: to get hard in life. People take these classes on
- 1:20:30Speaker 2: mental toughness. Like even seals, you have the class about visualization, self-talk,
- 1:20:34Speaker 2: eat an elephant one bite at a time, breathing control. Yeah,
- 1:20:36Speaker 2: I roger that. You got to put yourself in a
- 1:20:39Speaker 2: hellacious situation. It's a lifestyle. How are you going to react?
- 1:20:44Speaker 2: How are you going to react? All that training goes
- 1:20:46Speaker 2: out the fucking door when you're in the fucking cold
- 1:20:49Speaker 2: water and you're fucking miserable and it's the first hour
- 1:20:52Speaker 2: of 130 hours of Hell Week and that first wave
- 1:20:55Speaker 2: goes over your head and you're the coldest you've been
- 1:20:57Speaker 2: in your life and your mind goes from hour one
- 1:20:59Speaker 2: to hour one fucking 30. All that fucking self-talking shit, dude.
- 1:21:04Speaker 2: You ain't thinking about getting the fuck out of here.
- 1:21:06Speaker 2: But if you live this shit, On a daily basis,
- 1:21:09Speaker 2: you know how to calm your mind down. The self-talk
- 1:21:12Speaker 2: will help. All that stuff will help. But usually we react.
- 1:21:15Speaker 2: We have pain. We have suffering.
- 1:21:17Speaker 1: We react.
- 1:21:17Speaker 2: And we react about, get the fuck out of here.
- 1:21:20Speaker 2: We got to go. It's those people who are able
- 1:21:22Speaker 2: to control that fucking feeling of fucking flight and say, no, motherfucker.
- 1:21:27Speaker 2: There's a way through this. It's not going to be
- 1:21:30Speaker 2: here forever. I'm not cold right now. I went through
- 1:21:32Speaker 2: three of them. I'm not cold now. I'm in a nice,
- 1:21:34Speaker 2: warm studio with you. You got to think about that shit.
- 1:21:37Speaker 2: The shit's going to end. It's going to end, but
- 1:21:39Speaker 2: we don't know that. We don't think that. At that time,
- 1:21:41Speaker 2: it's going to last forever. And then you get to
- 1:21:43Speaker 2: sit back on Friday with everybody walking across the, you know,
- 1:21:46Speaker 2: back on the grinder, all the 16, 17, 18 guys
- 1:21:49Speaker 2: that graduated Hill Week. And you get a chance to
- 1:21:51Speaker 2: watch these guys victorious. And then you get the chance
- 1:21:54Speaker 2: to think about that. You take that hot, warm shower.
- 1:21:57Speaker 2: First thing that comes to your fucking mind is why
- 1:21:58Speaker 2: the fuck did I quit? So what keeps me going?
- 1:22:01Speaker 2: I've quit several things. I know what's on the back
- 1:22:05Speaker 2: end of fucking quitting. It's a lifetime of thinking about
- 1:22:08Speaker 2: why the fuck did I do that? And I ain't
- 1:22:11Speaker 2: fucking doing that no more.
- 1:22:13Speaker 1: There's something about talking to a guy like you that
- 1:22:16Speaker 1: a lot of people hope that you're going to say
- 1:22:19Speaker 1: some magic thing that's going to click in their brain.
- 1:22:21Speaker 1: Everybody wants it. And it's going to change who they are. Like,
- 1:22:23Speaker 1: what is it?
- 1:22:24Speaker 2: What is the thing?
- 1:22:24Speaker 1: That's why people go to these self-help... conferences and they
- 1:22:29Speaker 1: take these classes and they hope that someone's going to
- 1:22:33Speaker 1: say something that changes the way their mind works.
- 1:22:36Speaker 2: It's hilarious to me. It is.
- 1:22:38Speaker 1: It's kind of hilarious to me too. But what is
- 1:22:40Speaker 1: also hilarious is that what you're saying is that you
- 1:22:44Speaker 1: have to do those things. You have to suffer. You
- 1:22:48Speaker 1: have to live in it. You have to be comfortable
- 1:22:50Speaker 1: in it. And then maybe some of that shit will
- 1:22:54Speaker 1: help you a little bit along the way.
- 1:22:56Speaker 2: Period. And I went to, I was, when I was
- 1:23:00Speaker 2: a SEAL recruiter, I got invited to MIT. Smart ass
- 1:23:03Speaker 2: motherfuckers there, man. I'm not that. I'm a cigarette animal.
- 1:23:06Speaker 2: I'm a knuckle dragger. And there was this guy there,
- 1:23:10Speaker 2: I forget his name, but he was like the top
- 1:23:12Speaker 2: head guy. Old white guy, you know, all geniused out.
- 1:23:17Speaker 2: And we were on this panel and they were asking
- 1:23:20Speaker 2: us all these questions about the mind, mental toughness and shit.
- 1:23:22Speaker 2: And he was answering them. And I wasn't answering many questions.
- 1:23:25Speaker 2: And I'll never forget, he was just answering them off
- 1:23:27Speaker 2: of theory. He never put his fucking ass in shit.
- 1:23:31Speaker 2: You read a bunch of fucking books, and you think
- 1:23:33Speaker 2: that you know how the fucking mind works and shit.
- 1:23:35Speaker 2: I had gone through hell since a kid, and then
- 1:23:38Speaker 2: all the way up until now. So I know, so
- 1:23:42Speaker 2: that theory is bullshit. Yeah, there's a lot of good
- 1:23:45Speaker 2: stuff out there you can read from people, but I
- 1:23:48Speaker 2: had lived hell. And when you put yourself in hell,
- 1:23:51Speaker 2: that's the only time you can figure out how the
- 1:23:53Speaker 2: fuck to get through that motherfucker. You can't read somebody
- 1:23:57Speaker 2: else's book about some theory on how to do shit.
- 1:24:00Speaker 2: Some guy who sat up in a nice warm office
- 1:24:02Speaker 2: and wrote some book with a nice cup of coffee
- 1:24:05Speaker 2: in the fucking hand. No, I want to see that
- 1:24:08Speaker 2: guy who immersed himself in fucking hell. And he thought
- 1:24:12Speaker 2: about quitting and leaving and his wife and his kids.
- 1:24:15Speaker 2: And why am I here? Is it worth it? All
- 1:24:18Speaker 2: this crazy shit? It still said and found out a
- 1:24:22Speaker 2: way to get through it. So basically that's the bottom
- 1:24:27Speaker 2: line of it all. We all want to read about
- 1:24:29Speaker 2: how we can quickly get somewhere. That's why the six
- 1:24:32Speaker 2: minute abs and all that other shit is so powerful.
- 1:24:36Speaker 2: You may get some results from it, but they're not permanent.
- 1:24:39Speaker 2: The permanent result comes from you fucking, I say it
- 1:24:43Speaker 2: all the time, you have to suffer. You have to
- 1:24:47Speaker 2: make that a tattoo on your fucking brain. So when
- 1:24:51Speaker 2: that hard time comes again, you don't forget it. You
- 1:24:55Speaker 2: may forget it for a second, but you can go
- 1:24:57Speaker 2: back in the cookie jar, I call it. It's something
- 1:25:00Speaker 2: that we've all endured. I call it the cookie jar.
- 1:25:02Speaker 2: And we often forget how hard we are. But you
- 1:25:05Speaker 2: got to reflect back. Take a couple seconds to reflect.
- 1:25:07Speaker 2: I've been through this. I've been through that. And then
- 1:25:09Speaker 2: remind yourself, I'm a bad motherfucker. And then you can
- 1:25:13Speaker 2: get through that shit. But if you don't believe it,
- 1:25:16Speaker 2: You haven't endured shit. You're just blowing smoke, man. And
- 1:25:20Speaker 2: you're not going to get through anything.
- 1:25:21Speaker 1: What was this guy saying? What was his theories that
- 1:25:23Speaker 1: he was throwing out there?
- 1:25:24Speaker 2: His theories was about, I forget exactly what it was,
- 1:25:26Speaker 2: but it was something about what the mind does under stress.
- 1:25:31Speaker 2: And how we can't. He said how we can't do something.
- 1:25:35Speaker 2: And I did it. I did what he said we
- 1:25:38Speaker 2: couldn't do.
- 1:25:39Speaker 1: What was he saying you couldn't do?
- 1:25:41Speaker 2: It was something about if you're born... If you're born
- 1:25:45Speaker 2: a certain way, you can't become this way. It was
- 1:25:52Speaker 2: totally saying that who I am now, like I had
- 1:25:56Speaker 2: to be born with some, not genetic power or some
- 1:26:00Speaker 2: gift from God, but I had to have some kind
- 1:26:02Speaker 2: of special gift. Had to have some kind of special gift,
- 1:26:05Speaker 2: and I forget what set me off, but it was
- 1:26:07Speaker 2: that we had to be, to be somewhere, you had
- 1:26:10Speaker 2: to be born with it, was the concept. And I
- 1:26:13Speaker 2: know what I was born with, and I know the
- 1:26:17Speaker 2: battle that I had in my mind. So when he
- 1:26:19Speaker 2: said it, I just sat there looking at my face,
- 1:26:21Speaker 2: and somebody in the crowd asked me a question. And
- 1:26:24Speaker 2: I totally contradicted everything he said. And I was like, nah, man,
- 1:26:27Speaker 2: I mean, I fucking know for a fact that you
- 1:26:29Speaker 2: can be this fucked up dude, Like really fucked up dude.
- 1:26:36Speaker 2: And with the right mindset. It sounds so easy with
- 1:26:40Speaker 2: the right mindset.
- 1:26:41Speaker 1: It doesn't sound easy. I know what you're saying. It
- 1:26:44Speaker 1: sounds like a simplistic answer. Right.
- 1:26:46Speaker 2: You can. You can. But you have to go into
- 1:26:49Speaker 2: those dark chambers that we often shut off. And you
- 1:26:53Speaker 2: got to open them up. You got to open up
- 1:26:54Speaker 2: and fight that fucking demon. Get in there. Talk to
- 1:26:56Speaker 2: that motherfucker.
- 1:26:57Speaker 1: Say what's up.
- 1:26:59Speaker 2: And we often take the. We all like to take
- 1:27:01Speaker 2: this four lane highway. The easy highway has fucking signs.
- 1:27:06Speaker 2: It has restaurants. We all love that four lane highway.
- 1:27:09Speaker 2: We always step over the shovel. And all I did
- 1:27:13Speaker 2: was I picked up that fucking shovel. And that shovel,
- 1:27:15Speaker 2: I made my own path. And you may have big
- 1:27:18Speaker 2: boulders and shit. They may be getting 200 miles up
- 1:27:20Speaker 2: the road faster than you. But going through this path
- 1:27:23Speaker 2: of life, this journey over here that you make yourself,
- 1:27:26Speaker 2: that's incredibly difficult. What comes out the other end of
- 1:27:29Speaker 2: that motherfucker is some glorious shit that you can't even
- 1:27:32Speaker 2: explain to people and we're afraid Bottom line is most
- 1:27:36Speaker 2: of us even the people who have all these theories
- 1:27:38Speaker 2: and shit It's easier to accept the fact that i'm
- 1:27:41Speaker 2: just not good enough I wasn't made to do that.
- 1:27:46Speaker 2: And yeah, some of us can't be lebron fucking james
- 1:27:49Speaker 2: But I'll tell you right now man We can do
- 1:27:51Speaker 2: a lot of shit when it comes to this pure
- 1:27:52Speaker 2: arm guts and willpower and getting through shit We have
- 1:27:55Speaker 2: a lot more with a lot more than we think
- 1:27:58Speaker 2: we have. Yeah.
- 1:27:58Speaker 1: The problem with a guy like that, with his theory
- 1:28:00Speaker 1: is his theories are based on results and those results
- 1:28:03Speaker 1: are based on human beings. And most human beings, there's
- 1:28:06Speaker 1: certain people that are born with certain gifts, like a
- 1:28:08Speaker 1: guy like LeBron James, obvious physical talent, you know, John
- 1:28:12Speaker 1: Jones and MMA, obvious like physical talent. But there's, when
- 1:28:17Speaker 1: you look at someone who's super successful, you always assume
- 1:28:22Speaker 1: that it has to be because of some sort of
- 1:28:24Speaker 1: physical gifts or Because people look at themselves, and I'm
- 1:28:27Speaker 1: sure this doctor, this old dude, probably had like a
- 1:28:30Speaker 1: little gut. That's exactly how he looked. Little tiny arms
- 1:28:33Speaker 1: and weak shoulders and probably thought, well, there's certain people
- 1:28:37Speaker 1: that are just mesomorphic and probably broke it down all
- 1:28:39Speaker 1: these scientific terms. right you know they they they just
- 1:28:41Speaker 1: have a fast twitch muscle fibers and they'll say all
- 1:28:44Speaker 1: this crazy shit that is true at the very highest
- 1:28:48Speaker 1: levels of the winners right but it doesn't mean that
- 1:28:51Speaker 1: you can't become that no It just means that it's
- 1:28:53Speaker 1: too painful for most people to go through. So very
- 1:28:56Speaker 1: few people ever get there. So if you look at
- 1:28:57Speaker 1: the actual results, he would be correct. But he's not
- 1:29:01Speaker 1: correct because he doesn't take the shovel.
- 1:29:03Speaker 2: Exactly. That's the moral of the story.
- 1:29:06Speaker 1: There's not some easy, lit up, street-like path with nice,
- 1:29:09Speaker 1: smooth roads. That's right.
- 1:29:11Speaker 2: It's a difficult motherfucker where you're going to fail and
- 1:29:14Speaker 2: you're going to be in your head. You're going to
- 1:29:16Speaker 2: be saying, I'm not good enough. And it's how you
- 1:29:18Speaker 2: get through that. It's how you get through that on
- 1:29:21Speaker 2: a daily basis when that thing is saying, man, I'm 43.
- 1:29:26Speaker 2: I've done so much. You start to become civilized. The
- 1:29:29Speaker 2: refrigerator gets full. You start making money, and you start,
- 1:29:34Speaker 2: I'm not getting cold anymore. I'm retired. At 40, people
- 1:29:38Speaker 2: shouldn't be playing basketball or football or being in the middle.
- 1:29:42Speaker 2: You start to believe this shit. And it becomes in
- 1:29:45Speaker 2: your fucking mind, like, there's people who are retiring, you know,
- 1:29:48Speaker 2: at 40-something years old or 30-something years old. At 43,
- 1:29:50Speaker 2: I'm still putting in 100-mile weeks, still doing thousands of pull-ups,
- 1:29:54Speaker 2: thousands of push-ups, because I'm not allowing myself to become civilized.
- 1:29:59Speaker 2: The worst thing that can happen to a man is
- 1:30:00Speaker 2: become civilized. You lose that fucking fight. You lose that,
- 1:30:04Speaker 2: why the fuck am I doing this shit? I'm good.
- 1:30:08Speaker 2: You ain't good, man. You ain't never fucking arrived. And
- 1:30:11Speaker 2: that's just my mentality. You may have more, but you
- 1:30:13Speaker 2: never fucking arrive. You want to be uncommon amongst uncommon people. Period.
- 1:30:19Speaker 1: Uncommon amongst uncommon people is one of the greatest ways
- 1:30:22Speaker 1: to put it.
- 1:30:22Speaker 2: That's it. Like, for me, what got me in trouble
- 1:30:27Speaker 2: with the Navy SEALs is I wanted to be one
- 1:30:30Speaker 2: so bad. So bad. I fought my ass off. And
- 1:30:33Speaker 2: I saw them as uncommon people. Very uncommon. But once
- 1:30:37Speaker 2: you become a Navy SEAL, you're all Navy SEALs. So
- 1:30:40Speaker 2: guess what happens? You're fucking common again. I wanted to
- 1:30:44Speaker 2: be uncommon amongst uncommon people. I wanted to be the guy.
- 1:30:48Speaker 2: I don't care if you fucking like me. I don't
- 1:30:50Speaker 2: care if you don't understand me. I didn't give a fuck.
- 1:30:52Speaker 2: Once I went through this fucking journey, this path of life,
- 1:30:54Speaker 2: you ain't got a whole bunch of fucking guys that
- 1:30:56Speaker 2: don't fucking like me. I don't give a fuck.
- 1:30:59Speaker 1: I'm a warrior.
- 1:31:00Speaker 2: Period. There's a lot of guys that have been in
- 1:31:01Speaker 2: a lot more combat than me. A warrior is not
- 1:31:05Speaker 2: always that. A warrior is a motherfucker who says, hey,
- 1:31:09Speaker 2: I'm here again today. I'm here again tomorrow. I'm going
- 1:31:12Speaker 2: to be here the next day. I'm 50 years old.
- 1:31:14Speaker 2: I'm still fucking getting after it. It's a person that
- 1:31:16Speaker 2: puts no fucking limit on what's possible. And that's what
- 1:31:19Speaker 2: got me in trouble a lot. That's why I went
- 1:31:21Speaker 2: to ranger school as a SEAL. That's why I tried
- 1:31:23Speaker 2: to go to Delta Force twice. I've been through all
- 1:31:26Speaker 2: these different training programs because I was looking for, in
- 1:31:30Speaker 2: the military, what I saw is in the training, these
- 1:31:34Speaker 2: people get their ass handed to them. After they get out,
- 1:31:37Speaker 2: a lot of them get civilized. I always wanted to
- 1:31:40Speaker 2: go back into training. No matter where I was at,
- 1:31:43Speaker 2: I wanted to go back to war. And the war
- 1:31:45Speaker 2: was in that training program where you see guys who
- 1:31:48Speaker 2: can quit, guys who are brutal, guys who are suffering,
- 1:31:50Speaker 2: guys who are... So as a SEAL, you don't volunteer
- 1:31:53Speaker 2: for ranger school. I did. I put in seven chips,
- 1:31:56Speaker 2: got turned down, got accepted. I went at 28, 29
- 1:31:57Speaker 2: years old. And... They go, why did you go? Because
- 1:32:04Speaker 2: I started becoming civilized. I started becoming complacent. I needed
- 1:32:08Speaker 2: to get my fucking ass kicked again. And when you
- 1:32:10Speaker 2: go as a SEAL going down to, you have no
- 1:32:13Speaker 2: rank in ranger school. You could be a major. You're
- 1:32:15Speaker 2: just fucking Joe Brown. You're nobody. And you're not eating.
- 1:32:20Speaker 2: You're not sleeping. So I always would put myself, I
- 1:32:22Speaker 2: would immerse myself in shit like that. Even I would
- 1:32:25Speaker 2: climb the ladder and I intentionally fall back down that motherfucker.
- 1:32:29Speaker 2: They say, all right, man, getting soft, dude. Getting soft,
- 1:32:33Speaker 2: kick your fucking ass again. And, you know, it's kind
- 1:32:36Speaker 2: of the process.
- 1:32:37Speaker 1: Did you find resistance from that amongst other guys that
- 1:32:41Speaker 1: didn't like that you were making them uncomfortable? Because that
- 1:32:44Speaker 1: is something that people, there's a natural instinct that people
- 1:32:47Speaker 1: have when someone's working harder than them to somehow or
- 1:32:50Speaker 1: another diminish that person.
- 1:32:52Speaker 2: Well, I know that a lot of guys don't like
- 1:32:53Speaker 2: me for a lot of reasons. And I realize that.
- 1:32:56Speaker 2: I am a guy that doesn't care if you like
- 1:32:58Speaker 2: me or not. And when you're an alpha male and
- 1:33:01Speaker 2: you're against other alpha males, and we eat our own.
- 1:33:05Speaker 2: Alpha males eat their own. And I love that shit.
- 1:33:08Speaker 2: Let's fucking go, man. I want to eat. Hey, man,
- 1:33:11Speaker 2: I'm all about that kind of mentality. But I would
- 1:33:14Speaker 2: sometimes take it to another level. I wasn't part of
- 1:33:17Speaker 2: a good old boy network. I didn't want to be
- 1:33:18Speaker 2: part of it. I wanted to be David fucking Goggins.
- 1:33:21Speaker 2: For too long in my life, and it got me
- 1:33:24Speaker 2: in trouble, for too long in my life, I wanted
- 1:33:25Speaker 2: to be accepted. Growing up, I lied. I fucking did
- 1:33:29Speaker 2: what I could. If you fucking like UFC and I didn't,
- 1:33:32Speaker 2: I love it. I love it, man. Let's go fucking
- 1:33:35Speaker 2: watch it, man. Be my friend. Be my buddy. That
- 1:33:37Speaker 2: fucking weak-ass shit, I found out through this path of life,
- 1:33:41Speaker 2: who is David Goggins? Who am I? I did it alone.
- 1:33:47Speaker 2: There was no fucking trophy on the fucking wall, the mantle.
- 1:33:50Speaker 2: That trophy's in my fucking brain. No one helped me
- 1:33:53Speaker 2: get there. No one paid my fucking bills. No one
- 1:33:54Speaker 2: did shit for me. No one ran those fucking miles,
- 1:33:56Speaker 2: lost that fucking weight. I suffered on my own and
- 1:33:59Speaker 2: developed this man who said, it's who I am, man.
- 1:34:02Speaker 2: A very competitive, ultra competitive dude that take it what
- 1:34:06Speaker 2: you want, man.
- 1:34:07Speaker 1: I call that personal sovereignty.
- 1:34:09Speaker 2: Exactly.
- 1:34:10Speaker 1: There's not a lot of people that have that.
- 1:34:11Speaker 2: That's me.
- 1:34:12Speaker 1: There's a lot of people that change who they are
- 1:34:15Speaker 1: depending upon what people want from them.
- 1:34:17Speaker 2: And that's, that's me. Yeah.
- 1:34:19Speaker 1: That's important, man. And most people struggle their whole life
- 1:34:22Speaker 1: to find out who they are. Struggle their whole life
- 1:34:25Speaker 1: to find out what defines them, what they actually enjoy
- 1:34:28Speaker 1: and what they don't.
- 1:34:29Speaker 2: You start putting yourself in situations that suck, you'll find yourself.
- 1:34:33Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:34:33Speaker 2: You'll find it real quick.
- 1:34:34Speaker 1: That is the thing, right? And that's one of the
- 1:34:36Speaker 1: things that I've gotten from paying attention to you is
- 1:34:38Speaker 1: that You, what you're preaching, what you're talking about is
- 1:34:43Speaker 1: finding yourself through struggle.
- 1:34:44Speaker 2: That's it. It's the only way to find yourself. You
- 1:34:47Speaker 2: don't find yourself. If you like bench pressing and you
- 1:34:49Speaker 2: bench press all the fucking time, what are you finding out?
- 1:34:52Speaker 2: If you like to swim, that's all you want to
- 1:34:53Speaker 2: do is swim. What are you finding out? People talk
- 1:34:59Speaker 2: about triple down on your fucking strengths. That's the fucking
- 1:35:02Speaker 2: weakest shit in the world. No, triple down on your
- 1:35:05Speaker 2: fucking weaknesses. Find out something about yourself. You already know
- 1:35:09Speaker 2: the good shit. You already know the happy shit. That's
- 1:35:11Speaker 2: why on my Facebook page, everybody goes, why don't you
- 1:35:14Speaker 2: talk about good times? You know how to get through
- 1:35:16Speaker 2: that shit, motherfucker. You don't need no one to tell
- 1:35:21Speaker 2: you how to get through. It's happy.
- 1:35:22Speaker 1: That's easy shit.
- 1:35:23Speaker 2: I'm going to tell you how you can help yourself
- 1:35:27Speaker 2: get through the times that suck.
- 1:35:28Speaker 1: Real life.
- 1:35:30Speaker 2: This is real life. 90% of your life will suck.
- 1:35:32Speaker 2: 10% will be fucking happy. You may be a lucky
- 1:35:37Speaker 2: guy and have a lot of fucking money, have a
- 1:35:38Speaker 2: great ass woman, all this shit. Trust me. One-on-one with
- 1:35:41Speaker 2: that fucking guy, he's missing something. His life still sucks
- 1:35:45Speaker 2: because he hasn't faced something that bothered him his whole
- 1:35:47Speaker 2: fucking life. Something is still eating that motherfucker up.
- 1:35:51Speaker 1: Almost everybody.
- 1:35:52Speaker 2: Everybody. Eating you the fuck up. But maybe you found
- 1:35:54Speaker 2: a good way, how I did growing up, on how
- 1:35:57Speaker 2: to ignore that voice that's saying, you ain't facing some shit.
- 1:36:02Speaker 1: Period, man.
- 1:36:03Speaker 2: I'm not special. I just stopped listening. I listened to
- 1:36:06Speaker 2: that voice. This is why I talk so fucking aggressive.
- 1:36:10Speaker 2: People say, man, do you believe in God? You cuss
- 1:36:12Speaker 2: so much. When I say fuck... It's letting you know
- 1:36:18Speaker 2: what I'm thinking. If I try to make it all
- 1:36:20Speaker 2: pretty and shit, that's not what my life was. It
- 1:36:23Speaker 2: was a violent, violent struggle daily to get where I'm
- 1:36:28Speaker 2: at today. I'm not going to water it down. I'm
- 1:36:31Speaker 2: not going to water it down. Shit wasn't fun. It
- 1:36:34Speaker 2: ain't fun today. But I'm happy.
- 1:36:37Speaker 1: Don't you think that your happiness is probably elevated by.
- 1:36:43Speaker 1: The amount of pain that you've gone through.
- 1:36:45Speaker 2: 100%.
- 1:36:45Speaker 1: So the amount of suffering that you understand, the amount
- 1:36:48Speaker 1: of pain that you've gone through makes you appreciate the
- 1:36:51Speaker 1: happiness and the beautiful moments with much more intensity.
- 1:36:55Speaker 2: That's what weak people miss about my story. Weak people
- 1:36:58Speaker 2: hear this soft kid. Oh my God, he must be miserable.
- 1:37:01Speaker 2: Oh my God, what the hell is wrong with him?
- 1:37:02Speaker 2: You're missing the fucking story. You're not listening to the story, man.
- 1:37:08Speaker 1: Look what I overcame.
- 1:37:10Speaker 2: If that doesn't put some badge of honor tattooed in
- 1:37:13Speaker 2: your fucking brain for the rest of your life, you
- 1:37:15Speaker 2: can die today talking to Joe Rogan. You're missing the story, man.
- 1:37:20Speaker 1: Am I happy?
- 1:37:21Speaker 2: What the fuck do you think? Don't misunderstand the passion
- 1:37:25Speaker 2: in which I speak for not being intensely happy. Happiest
- 1:37:29Speaker 2: person in the world. But I'm not done. So I'm
- 1:37:32Speaker 2: not going to speak to you like, oh, man, everything
- 1:37:35Speaker 2: is great. No, I have a lot more shit to do.
- 1:37:37Speaker 2: A lot more shit to do.
- 1:37:40Speaker 1: Well, this is in the same use of the word
- 1:37:42Speaker 1: that you used, the warrior's mentality, the warrior's life.
- 1:37:45Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:37:46Speaker 1: This is the way that you can keep balanced and
- 1:37:49Speaker 1: sane and keep a good grip on who you are.
- 1:37:54Speaker 2: Period. And there's a quote that was said. I don't
- 1:37:57Speaker 2: know who said it, but it was a great quote.
- 1:37:59Speaker 2: This guy said, going into combat, going into war, of
- 1:38:03Speaker 2: the hundred men that go into war, ten shouldn't even
- 1:38:06Speaker 2: fucking be there. 80 of them are just targets 10
- 1:38:11Speaker 2: do most or nine do most of fighting one is
- 1:38:14Speaker 2: a warrior and it's a true quote to life i
- 1:38:20Speaker 2: saw it going through train i saw it everywhere i
- 1:38:22Speaker 2: went there's so many people who just show up to
- 1:38:25Speaker 2: life that shouldn't even fucking be around and there's a
- 1:38:29Speaker 2: few people who do all the work. I wanted to
- 1:38:30Speaker 2: be part of that nine, and I'm working towards being
- 1:38:34Speaker 2: that one. And that's just how I live my life.
- 1:38:37Speaker 1: Now, what are you doing with your life these days?
- 1:38:39Speaker 2: Right now, I keep the same. I'm very routine. I
- 1:38:43Speaker 2: get up every morning. I run. I go to the gym.
- 1:38:46Speaker 2: And then at nighttime, I stretch out. I am just
- 1:38:49Speaker 2: trying to develop a business. Costing me a lot of
- 1:38:52Speaker 2: money trying to do that. I'm just getting out. I'm
- 1:38:54Speaker 2: an introvert. So I never want to get on social media.
- 1:38:58Speaker 2: I'm not big on that. I'm big on being with yourself.
- 1:39:03Speaker 2: I believe all these fucking cameras and phones and shit.
- 1:39:07Speaker 2: It takes you away from the most powerful thing in
- 1:39:10Speaker 2: the world, which is your fucking mind. So I try
- 1:39:13Speaker 2: hard to continue to grow that. I'm trying to break
- 1:39:15Speaker 2: a record again. I'm trying to cross Death Valley as
- 1:39:18Speaker 2: fast as possible, top of Mount Whitney. And I'm constantly
- 1:39:21Speaker 2: trying to put goals in front of me. But the
- 1:39:23Speaker 2: biggest thing is I'm trying to find more of myself.
- 1:39:25Speaker 2: And the only way I can find more is to
- 1:39:27Speaker 2: silence the world out as much as I can because
- 1:39:29Speaker 2: it's getting busier every day. It's getting faster. And the
- 1:39:33Speaker 2: faster it gets, the more you are missing who the
- 1:39:36Speaker 2: fuck you are. So I trap my own mind a
- 1:39:39Speaker 2: lot and say, look, man, I put my phone away.
- 1:39:41Speaker 2: I put shit away and I go dark. I go
- 1:39:43Speaker 2: dark a lot. And it's because I have to find
- 1:39:46Speaker 2: out I'm on a journey of life and we all
- 1:39:48Speaker 2: have a different journey. And I want to be in
- 1:39:50Speaker 2: my fucking pine box. And I believe your spirit lives forever.
- 1:39:54Speaker 2: It has to. It's too fucking powerful. No way in
- 1:39:56Speaker 2: hell that thing just dies when you die. I want
- 1:39:59Speaker 2: to be able to look back on my life when
- 1:40:00Speaker 2: I'm all dead and be so fucking proud of myself forever.
- 1:40:04Speaker 2: This is all temporary shit to me. I want to
- 1:40:07Speaker 2: be forever proud of who I was as a man
- 1:40:10Speaker 2: and change who I used to be. The liar, the
- 1:40:13Speaker 2: insecure guy, the guy who can, whatever. I want to
- 1:40:16Speaker 2: be proud. If I die now, if I die at 80,
- 1:40:18Speaker 2: if I die at 90, 100, I want to look
- 1:40:19Speaker 2: at myself and say, proud of myself.
- 1:40:21Speaker 1: Don't you think that also, like what we're saying, that
- 1:40:24Speaker 1: because you've gone through so much struggle, you appreciate happiness,
- 1:40:28Speaker 1: true happiness? Do you think that you appreciate discipline because
- 1:40:31Speaker 1: you weren't disciplined? Do you think you appreciate the hard
- 1:40:34Speaker 1: work you put in because you used to be weak?
- 1:40:35Speaker 2: Yes, I appreciate self-discipline. Yes. I never had, and the
- 1:40:39Speaker 2: crazy thing about what, you know, you say that, I
- 1:40:41Speaker 2: didn't have a motherfucker come wake me up at 3
- 1:40:44Speaker 2: o'clock in the fucking morning and say, hey, you got
- 1:40:45Speaker 2: to get your shit in. I had no trainer. I
- 1:40:48Speaker 2: didn't have a nutritionist. It was this self-discipline that I
- 1:40:51Speaker 2: had to survive, to not survive, I was weak, to thrive.
- 1:40:57Speaker 2: No one said, hey, man, you're 297 pounds, man. I
- 1:41:00Speaker 2: want to help you out. You're not smart I'm going
- 1:41:06Speaker 2: to help you out I had to work at all
- 1:41:08Speaker 2: this shit I had to overcome And It self disciplines
- 1:41:15Speaker 2: everything If you don't have it I don't look at
- 1:41:17Speaker 2: you right Because I know you're capable of more It's
- 1:41:20Speaker 2: not discipline so much for me It's all on you
- 1:41:24Speaker 2: It's all on you The self part is what's big
- 1:41:27Speaker 2: We need someone to hold people accountable Fuck that shit
- 1:41:31Speaker 2: man Fuck that shit. We count on people too much
- 1:41:36Speaker 2: to get us through shit. And we look to our right,
- 1:41:39Speaker 2: we look to our left, we're looking for help. And
- 1:41:41Speaker 2: if you can build that self, you can build that
- 1:41:43Speaker 2: total accountability in one self. And it's not about being selfish.
- 1:41:49Speaker 2: I'm trying to create a better me. So hopefully people
- 1:41:51Speaker 2: who are hearing this are taking it the right way.
- 1:41:53Speaker 2: Can say, I can run a mile. Ain't about running
- 1:41:57Speaker 2: 205 fucking miles, doing fourth, being a city, ain't about
- 1:41:59Speaker 2: all that shit. Shit doesn't matter. I want you to
- 1:42:02Speaker 2: see how fucking far you can go. And that's all
- 1:42:05Speaker 2: it's about, yourself. And that's where it all comes from.
- 1:42:09Speaker 1: Well, listen, I guarantee you've already done that. What you
- 1:42:12Speaker 1: experienced from watching that television show and what got you
- 1:42:16Speaker 1: out the door, what got you to sort of take
- 1:42:18Speaker 1: the first steps to change your life, what you experienced
- 1:42:21Speaker 1: by watching Rocky, what you experienced, those moments of inspiration.
- 1:42:25Speaker 1: Those are critical for people. They need to know that
- 1:42:28Speaker 1: someone's done something, that someone's done something that's greater than
- 1:42:31Speaker 1: what they can imagine themselves doing, and they want to
- 1:42:33Speaker 1: take a step towards trying to be better. That inspiration
- 1:42:38Speaker 1: is gigantic, and sometimes it comes across as corny. People
- 1:42:42Speaker 1: read too much of it online. It becomes– it drowns out.
- 1:42:47Speaker 1: You lose– the meaning gets lost, and there's a lot
- 1:42:50Speaker 1: of posers. There's a lot of people out there that
- 1:42:52Speaker 1: are pretending– that they're trying to offer up inspiration or
- 1:42:56Speaker 1: a true, honest account of their experiences. But really what
- 1:43:00Speaker 1: they're trying to do is say something that's going to
- 1:43:02Speaker 1: get likes.
- 1:43:03Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:43:03Speaker 1: You know, they're trying to say things that they think
- 1:43:05Speaker 1: people are going to go, yeah, double high five.
- 1:43:08Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:43:08Speaker 1: You know, there's a thing that people are doing where
- 1:43:10Speaker 1: they're just trying to just get social cred.
- 1:43:14Speaker 2: That's it. That's what social media is, man. I'm going
- 1:43:16Speaker 2: to paint you the picture of my fake life.
- 1:43:18Speaker 1: Right, right, right.
- 1:43:20Speaker 2: I paint you a picture of my fucking real life. Yeah. Period.
- 1:43:23Speaker 2: Like it or not, man.
- 1:43:24Speaker 1: But that real life is fuel for people. It's fuel
- 1:43:28Speaker 1: for me. I mean, I love that shit. I live
- 1:43:31Speaker 1: off of it. There's a lot of people that I
- 1:43:32Speaker 1: follow online, and you're one of them, that I can
- 1:43:36Speaker 1: get something out of that. I could watch a short
- 1:43:39Speaker 1: clip of you talking. I'm sure clips of this podcast,
- 1:43:41Speaker 1: people are going to play these clips and go for
- 1:43:43Speaker 1: fucking crazy runs afterwards.
- 1:43:45Speaker 2: Right. Well, I hope so.
- 1:43:46Speaker 1: Fuck yeah, they're going to. You don't even have to hope.
- 1:43:48Speaker 1: It's going to happen.
- 1:43:49Speaker 2: That's good. That's good.
- 1:43:50Speaker 1: What is this business you're doing?
- 1:43:52Speaker 2: Well, it's my own Goggins LLC. Um, basically I, I'm
- 1:43:56Speaker 2: investing in myself. I'm investing in myself and I hope
- 1:44:01Speaker 2: that this story is, can, can change somebody's life. Not
- 1:44:06Speaker 2: to be me because they ain't about me. And I,
- 1:44:08Speaker 2: and I, I, I try to be as real as
- 1:44:10Speaker 2: I can because we're all fucking suffering in this world.
- 1:44:13Speaker 2: We're all hurting. And I try to, Take away all
- 1:44:16Speaker 2: titles you want to give me and let you know
- 1:44:17Speaker 2: that I did not come from that shit. That's why
- 1:44:20Speaker 2: I have to be so authentic and so real about
- 1:44:22Speaker 2: my own insecurities, my own faults, just being a fucked
- 1:44:25Speaker 2: up person. I'm not the best at anything. I'm not gifted.
- 1:44:30Speaker 2: I'm just driven. And it's all about trying to share
- 1:44:33Speaker 2: that message with people. This is all about, you know,
- 1:44:37Speaker 2: I speak to a lot of people and that's what
- 1:44:40Speaker 2: I do now.
- 1:44:40Speaker 1: And how are you doing it as a business?
- 1:44:43Speaker 2: I do some motivational speaking, but right now, I'm not
- 1:44:46Speaker 2: really trying to make a lot of fucking money. I'm
- 1:44:48Speaker 2: just trying to build the brand as authentic as possible
- 1:44:51Speaker 2: because I don't want to build it too fast because
- 1:44:54Speaker 2: my biggest fear in life is people can read right
- 1:44:56Speaker 2: through a motherfucker that's not real. I do it all
- 1:44:59Speaker 2: the time. A lot of people have these great quotes
- 1:45:01Speaker 2: and they mass produce. I can't mass produce something, man.
- 1:45:07Speaker 2: And they have these great quotes and shit, but are
- 1:45:09Speaker 2: you living that, motherfucker? But you just quote it and
- 1:45:12Speaker 2: how powerful it may sound. Are you getting up every
- 1:45:16Speaker 2: fucking morning? I'm not working out, whatever. Are you really
- 1:45:18Speaker 2: getting the fuck after? Are you just talking to motivate people?
- 1:45:22Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:45:22Speaker 2: And I don't want to be that guy.
- 1:45:24Speaker 1: Or are you talking to pretend that you're exactly after it?
- 1:45:26Speaker 2: And a lot of people make this big money over here,
- 1:45:28Speaker 2: the side, which I haven't made a lot. And they, they,
- 1:45:31Speaker 2: they talk this shit. And they're off this and it's gone.
- 1:45:35Speaker 2: They're not authentic at all, man. It's all this shit.
- 1:45:39Speaker 2: And I read it and I'm like, man, this guy
- 1:45:40Speaker 2: ain't bullshit. Bullshit, man. Fucking wake up, get after it,
- 1:45:44Speaker 2: live what you're saying. And then it comes, people can see.
- 1:45:48Speaker 2: When I talk, the reason I talk so fucking dispassionate,
- 1:45:52Speaker 2: because I'm reliving my fucking life. I'm reliving this morning
- 1:45:56Speaker 2: when I got up. I didn't want to do that shit.
- 1:45:57Speaker 2: I'm reliving everything I did. And I can't speak to
- 1:46:00Speaker 2: you like all calm and shit.
- 1:46:02Speaker 1: Shit sucks.
- 1:46:03Speaker 2: It sucks, man. So whenever I start talking about like
- 1:46:05Speaker 2: after this podcast, you'll see, man. God, you're so calm
- 1:46:08Speaker 2: right now. What the fuck is wrong with you? I'm
- 1:46:11Speaker 2: not going back through that shit, man. I'm not going
- 1:46:13Speaker 2: back through the suffering and shit that it took to
- 1:46:16Speaker 2: become who I am today. So I'm slowly trying to
- 1:46:18Speaker 2: build this brand to the point where I can slowly,
- 1:46:21Speaker 2: hopefully make people from motivated to driven because motivation is crap.
- 1:46:25Speaker 2: It's shit. People right now, maybe listening to this shit,
- 1:46:28Speaker 2: they'd be motivated to go run. If it's cold somewhere
- 1:46:31Speaker 2: where they're at, a lot of motherfuckers will shut that door,
- 1:46:33Speaker 2: go back inside. That's motivation. It comes and go as
- 1:46:37Speaker 2: how you feel. If you and your wife are good,
- 1:46:39Speaker 2: if you and your kids are good, if you're good
- 1:46:41Speaker 2: at work, you're motivated. I like a motherfucker whose life
- 1:46:45Speaker 2: is imploded, ain't got shit in life, and says, I
- 1:46:50Speaker 2: still got to fucking get after it today, man. That's
- 1:46:53Speaker 2: what it's about. So that's when you move from motivation
- 1:46:55Speaker 2: to driven to obsessed. And I want people to realize
- 1:46:58Speaker 2: once you get to this portion over here, the driven
- 1:47:00Speaker 2: obsessed part, you're unstoppable.
- 1:47:03Speaker 1: This commitment that you have to authenticity is one of
- 1:47:06Speaker 1: the reasons why people are connected to what your message is.
- 1:47:10Speaker 1: That's one of the reasons why what you're saying, you
- 1:47:12Speaker 1: don't want to grow too fast. You don't want it
- 1:47:14Speaker 1: to be bullshit. You're terrified of that thing. Just like
- 1:47:16Speaker 1: we were talking about with weak people, you're terrified of
- 1:47:18Speaker 1: seeing that weakness in yourself.
- 1:47:20Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:47:21Speaker 1: We all see that. We've all seen motivational things that
- 1:47:24Speaker 1: are bullshit. We've all talked to people that are talking
- 1:47:27Speaker 1: and you realize there's nothing really that they're connected to.
- 1:47:30Speaker 1: They're not really connected to their words. Their words are
- 1:47:32Speaker 1: just a bunch of words they've pieced together because they
- 1:47:35Speaker 1: sound like something that someone who's enlightened on the subject
- 1:47:39Speaker 1: would say.
- 1:47:40Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:47:41Speaker 1: Yeah, it doesn't connect at all. So your struggle now
- 1:47:45Speaker 1: is to try to figure out how to stay you
- 1:47:48Speaker 1: and get the message out but still be fully connected
- 1:47:51Speaker 1: to that message.
- 1:47:52Speaker 2: Right. And it's not so much a struggle because I'm
- 1:47:55Speaker 2: not really about– I'm not driven by the business. I'm
- 1:48:02Speaker 2: not driven by trying to be– I make a very
- 1:48:05Speaker 2: small salary from being retired from the military. That's all
- 1:48:08Speaker 2: I need. So I'm not fast to, I'm a minimalist motherfucker.
- 1:48:13Speaker 2: Give me a backpack, a fucking ground to sleep on
- 1:48:15Speaker 2: and a pull-up bar and some running shoes, and a
- 1:48:19Speaker 2: Subway sandwich or some shit, and I'm fucking straight. I
- 1:48:24Speaker 2: believe in patience. I'm a patient dude. I can watch
- 1:48:28Speaker 2: a piece of grass grow for 20 years because I
- 1:48:31Speaker 2: know that this is how you get somewhere in life.
- 1:48:35Speaker 2: By being that monk-like mentality, And being able to watch
- 1:48:40Speaker 2: something grow very calmly, patiently. And that's all I'm doing
- 1:48:44Speaker 2: right now. It's not about money. It's not about people
- 1:48:45Speaker 2: knowing me. I don't care if you like me. Whoever
- 1:48:47Speaker 2: wants to hear this, it's out there. It's out there.
- 1:48:50Speaker 1: So your goal is to grow this.
- 1:48:52Speaker 2: Right. Slowly. Very slowly.
- 1:48:55Speaker 1: And your goal is to grow this in order to
- 1:48:58Speaker 1: impact people? Period.
- 1:49:00Speaker 2: That's it. It's not about me.
- 1:49:03Speaker 1: What do you get out of impacting people?
- 1:49:07Speaker 2: It's a good question. I don't get anything out of it.
- 1:49:10Speaker 2: I'm a tool.
- 1:49:11Speaker 1: But you must get something. There must be personal satisfaction.
- 1:49:14Speaker 1: There must be a connection to those people. It must
- 1:49:17Speaker 1: be enriching to you.
- 1:49:19Speaker 2: It's hard to connect with people because there's quite a
- 1:49:21Speaker 2: few now that are coming in. It's my duty. It's
- 1:49:25Speaker 2: my duty to share. It's kind of like it's somebody
- 1:49:29Speaker 2: who discovered a new earth and discovered the people and
- 1:49:35Speaker 2: the water source and the food source I discovered a
- 1:49:39Speaker 2: whole nother part of your fucking brain that a lot
- 1:49:42Speaker 2: of people don't even know about. It's my job by
- 1:49:46Speaker 2: being a fucking on this journey and being a discovery
- 1:49:48Speaker 2: person and being the person that maybe I didn't discover
- 1:49:51Speaker 2: this part. I discovered a very important part that I
- 1:49:53Speaker 2: haven't met many people that have discovered this part. I'm
- 1:49:57Speaker 2: sure there's a lot out there, but it's my job
- 1:50:00Speaker 2: now to take these weak people in the category that
- 1:50:02Speaker 2: I was in and say, uh-uh. Stop reading the bullshit.
- 1:50:07Speaker 2: Stop listening to the bullshit. And if my story of
- 1:50:11Speaker 2: success can impact somebody, it is my job, it is
- 1:50:13Speaker 2: my duty to share the story. As much as I'm
- 1:50:16Speaker 2: not really fond of it, I'm the kind of guy
- 1:50:19Speaker 2: that wants to sit in the fucking room and just
- 1:50:21Speaker 2: be me. Just be me, alone, by myself. It's who
- 1:50:26Speaker 2: I am. But I have to get uncomfortable and tell
- 1:50:29Speaker 2: people all this shit. You think it feels good telling
- 1:50:31Speaker 2: people how to... I had a fourth grade reading level
- 1:50:33Speaker 2: in high school. I stuttered. I lied to people to
- 1:50:37Speaker 2: be their fucking friends. It doesn't feel good. It doesn't
- 1:50:40Speaker 2: feel good at all. But maybe somebody's doing the same shit.
- 1:50:45Speaker 2: And maybe they can realize, wow, that motherfucker was a
- 1:50:48Speaker 2: piece of shit. And he fucking now is a Navy SEAL,
- 1:50:52Speaker 2: retired guy, and runs these miles and was 297 pounds
- 1:50:56Speaker 2: and pathetic fucker. And wow. And people say, why are
- 1:51:00Speaker 2: you talking? It's the fucking truth. I was a fucking
- 1:51:04Speaker 2: pathetic motherfucker, man. People cannot say that to themselves. We
- 1:51:08Speaker 2: have to choose these great fucking magical words that make
- 1:51:12Speaker 2: people feel good.
- 1:51:14Speaker 1: Tell yourself the truth.
- 1:51:16Speaker 2: If someone calls you fucking fat, they may be bullying you,
- 1:51:19Speaker 2: but you might be fucking fat. If someone calls you dumb,
- 1:51:24Speaker 2: it's mean, but you might be fucking dumb. It's life, man.
- 1:51:28Speaker 2: Take it for what it's worth and change it.
- 1:51:31Speaker 1: And that terrible feeling when someone does tell you that
- 1:51:34Speaker 1: you're fat, you can use that as fuel.
- 1:51:36Speaker 2: As fuel, period. And that's all this is about. And
- 1:51:40Speaker 2: where it goes, if it goes somewhere, whatever, you know,
- 1:51:44Speaker 2: I don't give a shit.
- 1:51:46Speaker 1: Well, you said something that I think of when I run,
- 1:51:49Speaker 1: and it's that most people quit at 40%. That's it.
- 1:51:51Speaker 2: That's my 40% rule, man.
- 1:51:53Speaker 1: I love that quote.
- 1:51:54Speaker 2: That's my 40% rule, man. And I really developed that
- 1:51:58Speaker 2: through my heart surgeries, and I developed that through that
- 1:52:00Speaker 2: first 100-mile run. I thought I had given 100%. I
- 1:52:03Speaker 2: was on that chair at mile 70. I was fucked up.
- 1:52:06Speaker 2: I thought I'd given 100%. And to go that last,
- 1:52:09Speaker 2: I go, man, I wasn't even near 100%. So I
- 1:52:15Speaker 2: came up with this thing called the 40% rule. It's
- 1:52:18Speaker 2: basically where you, it's like a car. You put a
- 1:52:21Speaker 2: governor on a car. And let's say the car can
- 1:52:25Speaker 2: go 130. That governor stops the car at 91. And
- 1:52:28Speaker 2: you're driving thinking, man, I want to fucking floor it,
- 1:52:30Speaker 2: but I can't go any faster. We do that to
- 1:52:32Speaker 2: our brain. We put a governor on our brain. The
- 1:52:34Speaker 2: second we feel pain, discomfort, suffering, all those words that
- 1:52:38Speaker 2: we hate to say because we're in this happy, peaceful
- 1:52:40Speaker 2: world we live in now, we stop. We slow down.
- 1:52:45Speaker 2: And if you can get through these different barriers and
- 1:52:47Speaker 2: gain 5%, 2%, 3%, that 40% becomes 60. That 60%
- 1:52:52Speaker 2: becomes 70 and 80 and 90. And then you'll hopefully
- 1:52:56Speaker 2: one day near 100. I don't know many people who
- 1:52:59Speaker 2: are probably at 100. I mean, we think we're there,
- 1:53:01Speaker 2: but there's so much more.
- 1:53:01Speaker 1: Isn't 100 a death's door, though?
- 1:53:04Speaker 2: I love that. I think it's true. I think that's
- 1:53:06Speaker 2: 100% true.
- 1:53:08Speaker 1: I think when you were laying in that tub, you
- 1:53:09Speaker 1: had knocked on the door.
- 1:53:11Speaker 2: That is 100% true. That is 100% truth. I didn't
- 1:53:15Speaker 2: give 100% in that 101-mile run I did for the
- 1:53:18Speaker 2: first time. So that's the scary thing. That's the scariest
- 1:53:22Speaker 2: thing in the world. I didn't die.
- 1:53:24Speaker 1: You probably gave 99.99999 and died with your life. I
- 1:53:27Speaker 1: guarantee it. I guarantee it.
- 1:53:33Speaker 2: Man.
- 1:53:33Speaker 1: Dude, I don't know how to end this any better
- 1:53:35Speaker 1: than that. So let's just wrap this up. If people
- 1:53:38Speaker 1: want to find your stuff, what's the best place to
- 1:53:42Speaker 1: go and look for it?
- 1:53:43Speaker 2: I'm just at David Goggins, man. Social media, on Instagram, Facebook.
- 1:53:48Speaker 2: I don't tweet that much stuff out because I write messages.
- 1:53:53Speaker 2: And I always link on Twitter to my Facebook and Instagram.
- 1:53:57Speaker 2: But it's just at David Goggins.
- 1:53:59Speaker 1: It was an honor and a privilege, brother. Thank you
- 1:54:01Speaker 1: very much, man. I really, really appreciate it.
- 1:54:03Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 1:54:03Speaker 1: David Goggins, ladies and gentlemen. Go after it, you motherfuckers!
- 1:54:07Speaker 2: Come on!
- 1:54:08Speaker 1: Dude, if that doesn't fire people up...
