- 0:00Uh yeah, obviously just um
- 0:04disappointing. Disappointing. I I feel
- 0:06like our guys prepared really well for
- 0:08this game. Um we had chances to win the
- 0:11game and uh you know, you can't turn the
- 0:14ball over in games like this and expect
- 0:16to win and we didn't create turnovers on
- 0:17defense. So, you know, there were some
- 0:19critical penalties in the game that hurt
- 0:21us and obviously the turnovers hurt us.
- 0:23Um, I mean, you know, you look at it and
- 0:24you say, um, I we outgained him 411 to
- 0:28280 and held him 222 yards passing. If
- 0:31you send somebody going in the game,
- 0:32that's what was going to happen. I I
- 0:33tell you, we won the game. But again,
- 0:35turnovers are are the most telling stat
- 0:38um that pertain to wins and losses.
- 0:40Obviously, we started in a hole in this
- 0:41game. I don't think we we started very
- 0:43well. We had a drive on defense early in
- 0:45the game. We were we just were really
- 0:47discombobulated. Um, when they scored a
- 0:50touchdown, they made it made it 170. And
- 0:52other than that, I thought I thought we
- 0:53played really well defensively. I
- 0:55thought offense um you know, we started
- 0:57slow, but we picked it up, like I said,
- 1:00and and really did a good job moving the
- 1:01ball the rest of the game and
- 1:02outgainained them. And but again, it was
- 1:04just it was it was critical turnovers
- 1:05that that I think um you know, I guess
- 1:08are the story of the game. Um there
- 1:10there's there's a room full of guys in
- 1:11there really hurting. Those guys put on
- 1:13the line for each other and in a moment
- 1:15where that's it's not an easy thing to
- 1:17do. Um, and I think it says a lot about
- 1:19the character of of of the men in that
- 1:21room and uh, you know, with that
- 1:24questions
- 1:25>> for Mike, Jason, and Jerry.
- 1:27>> Coach, as you mentioned, you outgain
- 1:29them uh, over about 280, but the slow
- 1:32start offensively kind of really
- 1:34hampered you guys now, you know, really
- 1:35got that whole. Can you talk to us about
- 1:37that slow start offensively?
- 1:38>> Yeah, it did. We just, you know, it was
- 1:41um several three and outs to start the
- 1:43game and our defense was on the field
- 1:45quite a bit and I think the drive I was
- 1:47talking about, you know, you could tell
- 1:49we we we just we were discombobulated.
- 1:51We we had a substitution error. We had
- 1:53just it was just not did not look like
- 1:55us. I really think other than that drive
- 1:57um you know, it didn't happen. But we
- 1:58played 30 I think 30 some snaps in the
- 2:00first quarter, you know, which is a lot.
- 2:02So um you know, yeah, we just we we
- 2:04started slow. You know, credit to our
- 2:06guys. they they they hung together and
- 2:08kept going and and we we you know we
- 2:09made some adjustments and and started
- 2:10attacking them a different way. We were
- 2:12just sloppy with the ball. There's too
- 2:13many drops and there was uh you know too
- 2:15many turnovers.
- 2:17>> That was my question. Like what do you
- 2:18attribute I mean probably
- 2:20[clears throat] close to 10 drops
- 2:21obviously the fumbles. I mean that was a
- 2:23very sloppy game. What do you attribute
- 2:25that to? Anything you can point to?
- 2:27>> Yeah, I I know. I I I don't know. I mean
- 2:29those are those are guys that usually
- 2:30make those catches and um I I don't
- 2:32know. I don't know. I I I those guys
- 2:34were fighting like crazy. I think you
- 2:36know sometimes you you strain so hard
- 2:37that you know little things that routine
- 2:39things like that you you don't execute
- 2:41on but I don't have a great answer.
- 2:45>> DJ I know that you like your defense
- 2:46play aggressive but seven penalties on
- 2:48defense some really costly ones that you
- 2:51know on third down stops potentially
- 2:53anything to attribute those two.
- 2:55>> Yeah I'm have to go back and look at I
- 2:56know some of those were close plays. I
- 2:57mean the the PI on Sly I don't know. I
- 3:01have to go back and look at them. I I
- 3:02our guys they were they were competing
- 3:04playing aggressive. We're never going to
- 3:06change that or stop that. We're always
- 3:07going to be the ones swinging and if if
- 3:10stuff happens, it happens. But, um, you
- 3:12know, there there's a lot of great third
- 3:13down stops, too. And, you know, the the
- 3:15the one on Xavier, the the roughing, the
- 3:17quarterback, he looked low. I thought he
- 3:19got blocked into him, but again, I I go
- 3:21back and watch that. I I don't know
- 3:23exactly how that was.
- 3:24>> Coach and John
- 3:27on Alabama second.
- 3:30What kind of play?
- 3:32>> Yeah, that's they
- 3:35Kiron went down um with an injury. We
- 3:38called timeout. He went back on the
- 3:40field on that play with we we called the
- 3:42timeout. So, we thought he was able to
- 3:43go back on the field and they told us he
- 3:45couldn't and we didn't get the the sub
- 3:47in for him. So, it was one of those
- 3:48deals where they pulled him off and and
- 3:50he didn't say to anyone and and they
- 3:51didn't say to anyone else either. So,
- 3:53yeah, we had 10 on the field. You know,
- 3:54just crazy that that drive itself there
- 3:57was there was probably more mental
- 3:58mistakes on that whatever how many plays
- 4:00that drive was, I think, than the rest
- 4:01of the game on defense.
- 4:03John DJ Cam's probably the best player
- 4:06on this team. Fumbles at the end there.
- 4:08Just what did you tell him in the locker
- 4:09room post game? How were you able to
- 4:11pick him up post?
- 4:12>> Yeah, I just told him told him I love
- 4:14him and keep his head up. Cam Cam's a
- 4:18great player. Done done a lot of great
- 4:19things for the for this program.
- 4:21Obviously in that moment he was fighting
- 4:22trying to get yards and and you know it
- 4:25happened. We got to be better with our
- 4:26ball security for sure. But um you know
- 4:30it's nothing for Cam to hang his head
- 4:31about. And Cam is a great great player
- 4:33and even better person
- 4:36else
- 4:45coming to an end
- 4:48with John.
- 4:52>> Yeah, it it I I don't know. It's really
- 4:53about the players and I I mean these
- 4:55guys worked really hard. they they put
- 4:58in the right amount of work to go win a
- 5:01game and and obviously we we didn't
- 5:02execute you won't have to do that but it
- 5:04it's about them it's about about those
- 5:06guys and the team and you know all that
- 5:08other stuff will sort itself out
- 5:10>> I got two for you quick ones DJ what you
- 5:12think about me Simmons the job he did
- 5:14tonight and then what did you see on
- 5:15Alabama's fourth down final point
- 5:19>> yeah
- 5:21it was two fourth downs on that drive we
- 5:23we had him stopped on fourth down and I
- 5:25mean I don't know it looked So he missed
- 5:27four tackles, maybe five on on one play.
- 5:29I mean, just
- 5:32crazy. And then the the fourth down on
- 5:34the goal line, you know,
- 5:37we had that route cover. We lost we lost
- 5:38our eyes on it. We we had to cover and
- 5:41um you know, credit credit to them.
- 5:43Their quarterback made a good play, good
- 5:44throw. And um obviously it was a crit
- 5:46they were both on the same drive and it
- 5:48was just a critical drive in the game
- 5:49where it was like two fourth down
- 5:51conversions. It was penalties. It was it
- 5:53was just one of those deals where, you
- 5:55know, just break your back.
- 5:58>> Malcolm,
- 6:00>> I mean, Malcolm was phenomenal. Again,
- 6:02Malcolm Malcolm is a a great player. Um,
- 6:05you know, can do a lot of things. He's
- 6:07very versatile and and I thought he
- 6:08played really well tonight and and he's
- 6:10made big plays for us.
- 6:12>> Back over here to
- 6:13>> DJ, you mentioned the fight your guys
- 6:15tonight. If you can just talk about how
- 6:17the second half started, how you guys
- 6:18were able to kind of put yourself back
- 6:19into a position to win the game. Yeah, I
- 6:22mean I again coming out the locker room
- 6:24I
- 6:25coming in the locker room at halftime
- 6:27there was no panic there was no it was
- 6:29everyone was just kind of like all right
- 6:30matter of fact here's what we did well
- 6:32here's what we didn't do well here's we
- 6:33got to correct let's go out there and do
- 6:35it and and I I thought our guys did a
- 6:37great job but we were right where we
- 6:38wanted to be even with that long drive
- 6:40defensively we're driving to go score
- 6:42and to go win the game and and I fully
- 6:44believe that's what we're about to do
- 6:44and I think our our whole team did you
- 6:47know it's just but we we obviously then
- 6:49turned the ball over and you know we we
- 6:51you're inside the red zone when that
- 6:53happened and you know it just it just it
- 6:56crushes you you know Mike
- 6:59>> despite the record at the end of the
- 7:00season this team faced a lot of
- 7:02adversity and continued to fight for
- 7:04each other for the good staff of the
- 7:05program when you look back on the season
- 7:07as a whole would you say about this
- 7:09group of guys that you have in the
- 7:10locker room
- 7:12>> yeah I mean
- 7:15it's it's a special group of guys and
- 7:17I'll start with with Kendrick Faulk
- 7:18because I I mean he he is our team
- 7:20leader And you know, you look at man
- 7:23locker right now. I mean,
- 7:25you know, he looks awful and and it is
- 7:29no reflection on him. He's one of the
- 7:30best leaders I've been around in my
- 7:31entire career. Um, these guys held it
- 7:34together again when when it was not easy
- 7:36to do that. And, you know, I have great
- 7:39answers because it's been it's been
- 7:40different things at different times, but
- 7:42you see a team that fought for each
- 7:43other all the way till the very end when
- 7:45that wouldn't wasn't easy. and you know
- 7:47most teams wouldn't and in a day and age
- 7:50where that's not really something that
- 7:51that happens all the time. So complete
- 7:53credit to to our guys and their
- 7:55leadership.
- 7:59>> Coach, uh you guys put a lot of faith in
- 8:01Ash Daniels. You went the extra step to
- 8:03preserve [snorts] his red shirt. Can you
- 8:05talk about his performance tonight
- 8:07bounce back to get you guys back off?
- 8:09>> Yeah, I thought I thought Ash performed
- 8:11really well. He did good uh both with
- 8:13his legs and his arm. He he had some key
- 8:16conversions throwing the ball and
- 8:17running it. You know, he had some good
- 8:20numbers even with all the drops. I mean,
- 8:21there was, you know, like we talked
- 8:23about earlier, several drops in the
- 8:24game. So, I think Ashton is a really
- 8:26good player. He's a really good leader.
- 8:28Um, you know, and I think his teammates,
- 8:31you see how other guys respond and play
- 8:33play around him for him.
- 8:35>> Go for the last one.
- 8:37>> DJ, you guys running back production, it
- 8:40seemed like it was tough for you to get
- 8:41get a ground game going with those guys.
- 8:42How how much do you think that kind of
- 8:44an impact with the offense, you know,
- 8:46getting off that slow start and kind of
- 8:48piling up possession.
- 8:49>> Yeah, I think early on it was we we had
- 8:51to adjust and kind of um change some
- 8:54things in how in our plan, but um you
- 8:57know, we knew it was going to be tough
- 8:58tough running on them. I mean, they do a
- 9:00good job and, you know, some of the
- 9:02quarterback run game, the plus one run
- 9:03game was something we knew we had to go
- 9:04to and and I thought, again, Ashton did
- 9:06a good job with that. And, um, you know,
- 9:09it was a slow start, but all in all, I
- 9:10thought I thought they came back and
- 9:12again, you know, with with the numbers
- 9:14we put up, it it was it really came down
- 9:16to a matter of taking care of the
- 9:17football. You know, it was the turnovers
- 9:18and and the the drops and some critical
- 9:20moments.
- 9:21>> All right. Thank God.
