- 0:57You know, charisma is one of those things that people think you either have, or you don't.
- 1:04But what I'm here to share with you today is you can learn charisma.
- 1:08Charisma is skill anyone can develop.
- 1:11And in this episode, we are going to break down how power presence and warmth the three key elements of charisma can make you a more effective and inspiring leader.
- 1:26Plus I'll be sharing how my experience with complex post-traumatic stress disorder has given me unique insights into reading micro-expressions and understanding these charisma components on a deeper level.
- 1:41So, whether you're leading a team.
- 1:44Building wellness initiatives or just looking to boost your communication skills.
- 1:50This one's for you.
- 1:53Let's dive in.
- 1:54So let's start with what charisma really is.
- 1:57In the charisma myth, Olivia Fox Cobane debunks, the idea that charisma is something only a select few people have.
- 2:06And maybe they're just born with it.
- 2:08You don't need to be super extroverted.
- 2:11Or naturally charming to be charismatic.
- 2:14In fact, it's a skill that you could develop through practice.
- 2:19And anyone can do it.
- 2:20Olivia Fox Cobane breaks down charisma into three components, power presence, and warmth.
- 2:27These are the building blocks of charisma.
- 2:30And they work together to help people find trust in you, respect you.
- 2:35And even feel connected to you.
- 2:38And as a leader, that's exactly what you want.
- 2:41Let's start with power.
- 2:43This is not how much authority you have.
- 2:47Or how loud your voice is in the room.
- 2:49It's about confidence.
- 2:51It's about making people believe, you know what you're doing.
- 2:54That your competent.
- 2:55And that you can handle whatever situation comes your way.
- 2:59Next we have presence.
- 3:01This is such a big one in today's world.
- 3:03Where we're constantly distracted with our phones, emails, and meetings.
- 3:09Presence means being fully engaged with the people or the person right in front of you.
- 3:15When you're truly present the people around you feel heard valued and understood..
- 3:20And that builds connection.
- 3:23And finally there's warmth.
- 3:25Warmth is about making people feel comfortable and cared for.
- 3:29It's that sense of genuine kindness and empathy.
- 3:33That makes others trusts you.
- 3:34This is where emotional intelligence comes into play.
- 3:38And leadership being warm means creating an environment where your team feels safe to express themselves and confident that you have their best interests at heart.
- 3:49Now let's talk about how power presence and warmth.
- 3:53Can transform your leadership style in the workplace.
- 3:56As someone who spent over a decade in corporate wellness.
- 4:00I've seen leaders who really get this.
- 4:03And leaders who.
- 4:05Well, they just don't.
- 4:08Let me give you an example.
- 4:09Imagine a leader.
- 4:10Who's all about power.
- 4:12They're competent.
- 4:12Sure.
- 4:13But they come across as distant.
- 4:15Or even a little intimidating.
- 4:17Their team might respect them.
- 4:19But they don't feel comfortable approaching them.
- 4:21On the flip side, there's the leader.
- 4:23Who's all about warmth.
- 4:25Everyone loves them but they might struggle to make real decisions.
- 4:29Or lead with authority.
- 4:30The goal is to strike a balance.
- 4:33When you can integrate all three, the power, the presence, and the warmth.
- 4:38You create this magnetic leadership.
- 4:41Where people not only trust you.
- 4:43And your abilities.
- 4:45But also feel genuinely connected to you.
- 4:48And that's where the magic happens.
- 4:51Your team becomes more engaged.
- 4:53More motivated.
- 4:54And more productive.
- 4:56And my corporate wellness programs.
- 4:57I teach leaders how to develop these skills.
- 5:00In a very practical way.
- 5:02Whether it's leading a health fair.
- 5:04Communicating new wellness initiatives.
- 5:06Or just improving every day team interactions.
- 5:11Charisma plays a huge role in how your team responds to you.
- 5:15Now I want to share something about my own journey.
- 5:18As many of you know, I was diagnosed with complex post-traumatic stress disorder many years ago.
- 5:24And while it's been a challenge.
- 5:25It's also given me a unique gift.
- 5:28I did a video on this and I'll link it in the show notes and description below.
- 5:33But that gift.
- 5:34Is the ability to read micro-expressions.
- 5:38These are the tiny, almost imperceptible facial expressions.
- 5:43That reveal what people are truly feeling.
- 5:46Even if they're trying to hide it.
- 5:48This ability has helped me become much more attuned to the emotional.
- 5:52undercurrents in the workplace.
- 5:54It's like having this little superpower that allows me to connect with people on a deeper level.
- 5:59And tailor my leadership style.
- 6:01To what they really need in the moment.
- 6:05Coaching as well.
- 6:07For example, if I'm leading a meeting, and someone gives a quick look of frustration.
- 6:11Maybe their eyes narrow.
- 6:13Or their smile doesn't quite reached their eyes.
- 6:16I can pick up on that and address it.
- 6:19I might ask if they have concerns or ideas they want to share.
- 6:23Because that's how you build trust and improve communication.
- 6:28And this ties directly into the concept of presence.
- 6:32When you're fully present with someone, you notice these cues.
- 6:35You're not just hearing the words they say.
- 6:38You're reading their body language their tone and their micro-expressions.
- 6:42This is how you connect with your team on a much deeper level.
- 6:47So, how do we develop charisma?
- 6:49Especially in the leadership context.
- 6:51Here are a few practical tips from the book, the charisma myth that I've seen work wonders.
- 6:57Both in my own leadership journey and the leaders that I coach.
- 7:02Number one mindfulness for presence.
- 7:06One of the best ways to develop presence is through mindfulness.
- 7:10This could be as simple as taking a deep breath right before a meeting.
- 7:13And reminding yourself to focus on the person in front of you.
- 7:16Not your watch when it buzzes.
- 7:18Because it sounds easy, but in our busy world, like the watch buzzing.
- 7:22That's a distraction and it can be a game changer.
- 7:26Number two power posing.
- 7:27What is that?
- 7:28Cabane talks about the concept of power posing.
- 7:32Where you take a stance that boosts your confidence.
- 7:35Think standing tall, hands on your hips.
- 7:39And chin up.
- 7:40This actually changes the way you feel internally.
- 7:45And helps you project more confidence.
- 7:47And number three, warmth through empathy.
- 7:50For warmth, we want to practice empathy.
- 7:53This can be as simple as asking your team how they're feeling.
- 7:57Not just in terms of work but as human beings.
- 8:02Show them that you care about their wellbeing.
- 8:04And they'll actually feel that warmth coming from you.
- 8:08And of course always be aware of your body language.
- 8:12And micro expressions.
- 8:13I know I make a lot of eyebrow expressions.
- 8:16My.
- 8:16Eyebrows are high component of my micro expressions.
- 8:21But if you notice I smile a lot and I keep that warmth going and the confidence by taking a deep breath, holding my shoulders back, I teach.
- 8:33Body language and posture in my personal training, I've done it for many, many years.
- 8:41Not only do you propel that outside, but you feel it inside.
- 8:47Just think of a smile when you smile, you send signals to your brain, that everything is okay.
- 8:53It's been scientifically researched.
- 8:57Besides that if you're frowning or your posture is off.
- 9:00You might be sending a message you don't intend to.
- 9:03I know I've seen a lot of upper-level management or walk around the building with a frown on their face.
- 9:10And that just sends the wrong signal across the board.
- 9:14So little adjustments can go a long way.
- 9:18So there you have it.
- 9:19The charisma myth is not just a great read.
- 9:22It's actually a roadmap to becoming a more effective charismatic leader.
- 9:29By developing power presence and warmth.
- 9:31You connect with your team in ways that inspire trust engagement and motivation.
- 9:37And remember charisma, isn't something that you're just born with.
- 9:41It's actually something you can learn, develop, and grow with over time.
- 9:46I've seen it firsthand in my own experience.
- 9:49And I know you can apply it to.
- 9:52If you'd like to dive deeper into these concepts or learn more about how to develop charisma in your own workplace.
- 9:59Be sure to check out the book, I'll have a link to it in the show notes and description below and the blog post that goes along with this episode.
