- 0:00Nancy May: Hello and welcome to another episode of Family Tree Food and Stories.
- 0:04I'm your co host, Nancy May.
- 0:06And today, we're turning up the heat on February.
- 0:09With a show that's all about the letter F.
- 0:11Food, family, fondue, and yes, a few fiascos.
- 0:15Why all the Fs, you ask?
- 0:17Well, it's February.
- 0:19And the second month of the year always seems to fly by faster than we'd like.
- 0:23Oops!
- 0:24Three more Fs!
- 0:26Anyway, Sylvie and I couldn't think of a better way to celebrate the
- 0:29final week of February, and yes, two more Fs, than with stories that bring
- 0:33together food, family, and a few flops, with food that starts with the
- 0:37letter F. this one is about fondue.
- 0:41So, grab your fondue forks and get comfy as I dive into this rich and cheesy
- 0:46story with a few traditions and yes, a mishap, off fixing up things for our March
- 0:53episodes of Family Tree Food and Stories.
- 0:56The First Fondue
- 0:57Fondue has always been a family fixture in our house.
- 1:01So much so that my parents were practically famous for it, but
- 1:04let me tell you how it all began.
- 1:06It was one frosty February evening in New York when my parents stumbled upon
- 1:11their first fondue setd to their good friends Hank and Catchy Childs, who had
- 1:18a flair for unforgettable introductions.
- 1:20who had a flair for unforgetable introductions
- 1:24In fact, they were the ones who introduced Mom and Dad.
- 1:27That night, the Swiss Embassy was filled with a heavy aroma of melting cheese.
- 1:32My parents, curious and adventurous as always, decided to give the fondue a try.
- 1:38One bite, and they were hooked.
- 1:40Or should I say, nabbed like a mouse in a trap.
- 1:43But by the end of the evening, Dad had befriended the chef.
- 1:47And mom was asking for the recipe.
- 1:49before leaving the event, they found the perfect, and yes, original, Swiss
- 1:54fondue set at the Embassy Gift Shop.
- 1:57That set, with hand painted images of boys and girls on each plate, became the
- 2:01centerpiece of many family gatherings, Christmas Eve dinners, And gatherings
- 2:06with really close friends and family members often had them bringing out that
- 2:10fondue set with a twinkle in their eye.
- 2:13At every cheesy meal, I remembered how my sister and I would carefully
- 2:17try to keep track of those forks, There was always a little colored
- 2:20tip at the end, so you could tell.
- 2:22Which fork belonged to who?
- 2:24And as a piece of bread fell off someone's fork, into the pot, well,
- 2:28the punishment was really a sweet one.
- 2:31You had to kiss the person sitting next to you.
- 2:33It was a perfect blend of family, food, fun, and friends.
- 2:38Over the years, that original fondue set began to crack and eventually did break.
- 2:43My mom was heartbroken each time a piece was broken because it kind of felt like
- 2:46losing a little part of our special family moments together, and yes, our traditions.
- 2:51But the memories that that set created, oh they still live with us today.
- 2:56Fondue for us has never been just about food.
- 2:59It's about the laughter, the stories, the connections that are made around
- 3:02the table of bubbling hot cheese.
- 3:04It was a tradition that my mom and dad created for our family.
- 3:08One that brought us closer and always made us laugh.
- 3:11One, lost piece of bread at the bottom of the fondue pot at a time.
- 3:15And by the way, if you have never had fondue, the cherished Piece of
- 3:20gold at the end of the pot is that gooey crust right at the bottom
- 3:24when all that cheese is gone.
- 3:26Before I continue, I'm going to take a little break to show you how you can find
- 3:30ways to create your own family traditions.
- 3:33Or remember the ones that you've got and make sure that they
- 3:35continue through the generations.
- 3:40Now let's get back to how Bob and I are carrying on that tradition.
- 3:44When Bob and I got married, we knew we had to carry on that tradition of fondue.
- 3:49We had many meals together with mom and dad over that cheesy gooey delight.
- 3:53And it took a lot of hunting, but we eventually found our
- 3:55fondue pot at a little specialty shop in Darien, Connecticut.
- 3:59From then on, fondue became a signature winter dish for our New Year's Eve
- 4:04and many other times spent around our dining table, with close friends.
- 4:09Every time we brought that pot out, the stories flowed, as freely as the wine.
- 4:14Conversations would bounce across the table alongside forks filled
- 4:18with cheese, shrimp, and even dessert fruit dipped into chocolate.
- 4:22Fondue isn't just a meal.
- 4:23It really is an experience.
- 4:25A way of bringing people together and creating memories that just
- 4:29stick with you over the years.
- 4:31Now, speaking of wine, let me tell you about one special memorable fondue night
- 4:35with our dear friends Mary and Marc.
- 4:38I call this one the Magic Reappearing or Disappearing Bottle of Wine.
- 4:43One cold evening in February, we decided to To try a new fondue restaurant in town.
- 4:48We had high hopes, not just for the food, but for the stories and
- 4:52the laughter that always ensue after having fondue with friends.
- 4:56Unfortunately, the fondue at this restaurant was quite the letdown.
- 5:00The cheese was bland and watery, and I've never had such a bland taste of a pot of
- 5:05anything before, in addition, the portions were small, and the wine we ordered
- 5:10was, eh, rather mediocre and certainly overpriced for what we were getting.
- 5:15still, we were determined to have a great evening with our dear friends.
- 5:19After all.
- 5:19It was fondue, and even a bad batch with good friends is enjoyable.
- 5:24the four of us soon polished off that bottle of wine, and yes,
- 5:28the pot of fondue, but we really didn't want to order anything more.
- 5:32However, we also didn't want the evening to end.
- 5:35but Bob, ever the problem solver, had a spark of inspiration.
- 5:40I've got more wine in the car, he said.
- 5:42You see, Bob had been making homemade wine in our garage.
- 5:45For while now.
- 5:47And he'd brought a few bottles to give to our friends.
- 5:50So, out to the car.
- 5:51He and Marc went, braving the cold, to retrieve one of Bob's
- 5:55perfect poodle, Pinot Noir.
- 5:57Named after our poodle, Pearl.
- 5:59But how do you sneak a bottle of wine that's been in your car into a restaurant?
- 6:03That's where Marc's trench coat came in handy.
- 6:06before leaving the table, they slid that empty bottle of wine into Marc's
- 6:10coat, Then returned to the car to fill it with Bob's Homemade Brew.
- 6:15Using the Westport News as a funnel, They poured that wine into
- 6:18the empty bottle, And snuck it quietly back onto our dining table.
- 6:23And we toasted to our friends with our new, And yes, more delicious bottle
- 6:27of wine, while trying to contain our laughter while our waitress lifted
- 6:32and looked at the bottle half empty and continued to ask somewhat puzzled
- 6:36if we wanted to order another one.
- 6:39the third trip to the car.
- 6:40Bob and Marc could barely keep a straight face.
- 6:44Passersby must have thought they were doing something rather shady or sexual,
- 6:48running back and forth to the trunk of the car in a dimly lit parking lot.
- 6:52That night, we might not have had great fondue, but the
- 6:55four of us still to this day.
- 6:57Laugh till our sides ache about that evening.
- 7:00of course, not every fondue story is smooth and delicious.
- 7:03Take my Aunt Pat, for example.
- 7:05She was known as a great cook and had a reputation for fabulously wild, fun
- 7:10dinner parties, always hosting with a flair to support her husband's career.
- 7:14My Uncle Nate.
- 7:16One year while living in Sydney, Australia, she decided to host a
- 7:19fondue party to impress Nate's boss.
- 7:22She set the table beautifully, beautifully.
- 7:24Opened the windows to let the evening breeze in, but shortly after setting the
- 7:28fondue pot on the table, disaster struck.
- 7:31A gust of wind caught the edge of the curtains, and suddenly
- 7:34there was a lot more than toasting bubbling cheese in that dining room.
- 7:38thankfully they were able to put that fire out quickly.
- 7:41With only a charred curtain as evidence of the evening's unexpected flambé.
- 7:47The fondue, however, was saved, and Pat's dinner party was a memorable success.
- 7:52It also cemented my aunt's reputation as a hostess who could handle
- 7:56literally anything unexpected.
- 8:00Fondue.
- 8:01Yes.
- 8:01The letter F. Family, fun, friends, and fondue.
- 8:06The letter F. Hmm, it certainly is one that brings about memories and stories.
- 8:13Fondue is a great way to wrap up February if you haven't tried cheese, meat, fish,
- 8:18or dessert fondue yet, it's worth it.
- 8:21Will inevitably be one that will produce some sort of interesting
- 8:25or at least memorable stories worth sharing for years to come.
- 8:29I guarantee that any find de you create and serve with family and friends.
- 8:34will result in fabulous stories, fonder friendships, and maybe even a few faux
- 8:39pas, but hopefully not fires, that will be talked about for years to come.
- 8:44If you've never made a fondue and want to know how to do so, I placed a link
- 8:48in the show notes to a PDF that gives you exact directions on how to do so.
- 8:52At least one of our favorite recipes.
- 8:55Sadly, this story comes to an end, and it's time for this group of
- 8:58February episodes to come to a close.
- 9:01Sylvia and I hope that we're inspiring you to test, create, and
- 9:05try new traditions of your own.
- 9:07ones that will give you stories to talk about for years to come.
- 9:10While doing so, please take a moment to follow, share, and rate this show.
- 9:15Doing so will help us create a family sized helping for more episodes
- 9:18of Family Tree Food and Stories.
- 9:20Until next week, dig into some new treats, some new stories,
- 9:24some new traditions, and memories.
- 9:26And ciao.
- 9:27Bye bye.
