- 0:01Speaker 1: Iran will never have a new career weapon. And it
- 0:04Speaker 1: says it loud and clear. They're not going to develop it,
- 0:07Speaker 1: they're not going to buy it, and they're not going
- 0:10Speaker 1: to do anything with it. And if they do, they
- 0:12Speaker 1: suffer unbelievable consequences, not just a little bit like I
- 0:21Speaker 1: won't even tell you the consequences, but the consequences are
- 0:24Speaker 1: the ultimate consequences.
- 0:25Speaker 2: Said.
- 0:26Speaker 1: With that being said, I hope we have a very
- 0:27Speaker 1: good relationship.
- 0:29Speaker 3: Some moments ago, President Trump doubling down on his deal
- 0:32Speaker 3: with a Ron as he meets with Middle East leaders
- 0:34Speaker 3: right now at the High Stakes G seventh Summit, Former
- 0:38Speaker 3: Ambassador at Large and counterterrorism Coordinator Nathan Sale served in
- 0:42Speaker 3: the State Department in President of Trump's first term, and
- 0:45Speaker 3: he joins us now, Nathan, thanks so much for joining
- 0:47Speaker 3: the program.
- 0:50Speaker 2: Great to see you, Lawrence.
- 0:51Speaker 3: Thanks for having me, of course, So we're starting to
- 0:54Speaker 3: get you know, I don't know if we want to
- 0:56Speaker 3: call them leaks or some type of sense that's going
- 1:00Speaker 3: to be in the deal. I think it's important that
- 1:04Speaker 3: we see the full thing because there are some parts
- 1:07Speaker 3: that are totally reasonable and the President is checking ran.
- 1:11Speaker 3: But there are some elements that folks have concerns of
- 1:15Speaker 3: when it comes to the billions of dollars that they're
- 1:17Speaker 3: going to get not from the United States but from
- 1:19Speaker 3: the Katoris and the Gulf States. What do you make
- 1:22Speaker 3: of the full deal?
- 1:25Speaker 4: It's a great question, Lawrence, and I agree with you.
- 1:28Speaker 4: The sooner we can see the fine prints on this deal,
- 1:30Speaker 4: the better. There's a lot of spin coming out of
- 1:33Speaker 4: Tehran right now, and it's hard for us as the
- 1:36Speaker 4: American people to discern what is completely exaggerated and what
- 1:42Speaker 4: might have a grain of truth to it.
- 1:44Speaker 2: So the sooner we can see the details, the better.
- 1:46Speaker 4: I want to bring back something the President just said
- 1:50Speaker 4: ahead of me, this is very important enforcements. How do
- 1:53Speaker 4: we know that the Iranians are complying with their commitments
- 1:57Speaker 4: under the deal? And what are the consequences for them
- 2:00Speaker 4: if they do what Let's be clear, they always do,
- 2:02Speaker 4: lie and cheat and evade, and the President was very
- 2:05Speaker 4: clear that there will be ultimate consequences. And that's really
- 2:08Speaker 4: important because American diplomacy is always most powerful when it
- 2:14Speaker 4: is backed by a credible threat of force, whether military force,
- 2:17Speaker 4: economic force, or using other tools of state craft. And
- 2:21Speaker 4: it's important that the President is keeping that on the
- 2:23Speaker 4: table to show the Iranians they're not going to be
- 2:26Speaker 4: able to lie and cheat their way out of this.
- 2:28Speaker 3: Nathan, I'm so glad that you brought that up because
- 2:30Speaker 3: when people panic, and I would admit I have concerns
- 2:34Speaker 3: about the document as well, at least what I've heard
- 2:37Speaker 3: about the document. But what ultimately matters is what the
- 2:41Speaker 3: president is going to do and what he's going to
- 2:43Speaker 3: respond to, and I think it's clear that he has
- 2:46Speaker 3: red lines when it comes to that. One of the
- 2:49Speaker 3: things that continues to be a problem is Hesblah and
- 2:52Speaker 3: what they're doing. It's not Lebanon, is Hesbelah, and Israel
- 2:56Speaker 3: has a right to respond to them. This is what
- 2:58Speaker 3: the President said regards net in Syria. Let's play it.
- 3:03Speaker 1: But I think that Siria, I mean, he's pulled that
- 3:06Speaker 1: country together amazingly quickly. He's very capable, and he's been
- 3:11Speaker 1: very good for me. He's protected everything that I've asked for.
- 3:13Speaker 1: He's done and if Israel can't do the job with
- 3:19Speaker 1: that killing everyone else.
- 3:22Speaker 2: He'll do the job.
- 3:22Speaker 1: Syria will do the gym.
- 3:24Speaker 3: So, Nathan, I thought this was crafty from the president
- 3:27Speaker 3: because you got the Gulf States, Muslims countries, Arab countries
- 3:31Speaker 3: that get a little perturbed. Even though they know that
- 3:33Speaker 3: his Blah is a terrorist organization, they don't want Israel
- 3:36Speaker 3: being so aggressive, so he throws them a curveball.
- 3:39Speaker 2: Okay, Syria, let's let Syria.
- 3:42Speaker 3: Deal with Hezblad. Then if you don't want Israel doing it,
- 3:45Speaker 3: why don't you guys police them.
- 3:48Speaker 4: Yeah, that's a bit of a curveball, Lawrence. I didn't
- 3:51Speaker 4: see that one coming. Let's take a step back and
- 3:53Speaker 4: look at the big picture here. You're exactly right. Israel
- 3:56Speaker 4: is not at war with Lebanon. Israel is at war
- 3:58Speaker 4: with Hesbelah, which itself is a threat to Lebanon. Hespula
- 4:02Speaker 4: has killed hundreds of Lebanese, is responsible for the death
- 4:06Speaker 4: of so many people over the years, and it's not
- 4:08Speaker 4: just a threat to Israel, it's also a threat to
- 4:11Speaker 4: the United States.
- 4:12Speaker 2: People.
- 4:12Speaker 4: Forget that before nine to eleven, before al Qaeda committed
- 4:15Speaker 4: the nine to eleven atrocities, Hesbolah was responsible for as
- 4:19Speaker 4: many American deaths as almost any other terrorist organization in
- 4:22Speaker 4: the world. So the American people have an interest in
- 4:25Speaker 4: Hesbolah being weakened and degraded. Now the question becomes, who
- 4:30Speaker 4: is the most effective fighting for us that's capable of
- 4:32Speaker 4: doing that. I'm not sure, frankly that Syria, which is
- 4:36Speaker 4: still getting back up on its feet after a decade
- 4:39Speaker 4: long civil war and the brutality of the Asad dictatorship
- 4:42Speaker 4: and the ISIS insurgency, I'm not sure that Syria has
- 4:45Speaker 4: the same capabilities to take the fight to this terror
- 4:48Speaker 4: group that Israel does. So the more people aligned against
- 4:52Speaker 4: Hezbolah the better. But let's also keep in mind Israel's
- 4:54Speaker 4: been doing this for several decades.
- 4:56Speaker 2: They know how to play this game.
- 4:58Speaker 3: Such a good point. I just want to breaking in
- 5:00Speaker 3: right now so the audience knowes what's happened. This is
- 5:02Speaker 3: the president right now at the G seven with this
- 5:05Speaker 3: working lunch. The moment we get some sound of this,
- 5:09Speaker 3: we'll go to it. But right now we're not hearing anything.
- 5:12Speaker 3: Our producers will give me the cueue. What does the
- 5:15Speaker 3: president need to excert here? Because some of these leaders
- 5:18Speaker 3: have not had our backs when it comes to this conflict.
- 5:22Speaker 3: Win to run, Nathan, I.
- 5:26Speaker 4: Think the G seven nations need to hear from the
- 5:28Speaker 4: United States that we want real allies, and that means
- 5:31Speaker 4: two things. First, of all, it means investing in their
- 5:34Speaker 4: own defensive capabilities. We've heard a lot about NATO members
- 5:38Speaker 4: investing up to five percent of their gross domestic product
- 5:41Speaker 4: in their military and defense related capabilities. Great, but the
- 5:45Speaker 4: second thing we need is once you invest, you actually
- 5:47Speaker 4: have to be able to put those cards on the table. Now,
- 5:50Speaker 4: that doesn't necessarily mean you're going to join the United
- 5:53Speaker 4: States in every military conflict that we face, every military
- 5:56Speaker 4: mission that we undertake, but we want to have you
- 5:59Speaker 4: in our corner, and we haven't really heard that same
- 6:02Speaker 4: level of commitment to the alliance that we would like
- 6:04Speaker 4: to hear. So I think the President is probably going
- 6:07Speaker 4: to be delivering a tough love message to these allies.
- 6:10Speaker 2: We need you to have capabilities because we need you to.
- 6:13Speaker 4: Be real allies, and real allies are there with you
- 6:15Speaker 4: when you need them well.
- 6:17Speaker 3: And to that point of capabilities, you know, they want
- 6:20Speaker 3: to get involved now that the President is ending the conflict.
- 6:25Speaker 3: I mean they needed the Straight more than we did.
- 6:28Speaker 3: I mean, it's not like most of our old supply
- 6:30Speaker 3: is coming from the Straight, yet they were nowhere to
- 6:33Speaker 3: be found.
- 6:36Speaker 4: Yeah, Lawrence, it's regrettable. We have skin in the game.
- 6:40Speaker 4: It's a global energy market. The nitrogen market is global insurance. Sorry,
- 6:47Speaker 4: insurance rates are affected by what happens there. But our
- 6:50Speaker 4: Asian allies and our European allies had a lot more
- 6:53Speaker 4: on the line now, I guess I'd say better late
- 6:55Speaker 4: than never. It would have been nice to have France
- 6:58Speaker 4: and the UK a couple of.
- 6:59Speaker 2: Months ago when it really mattered.
- 7:01Speaker 4: But let's not discount the importance of their involvement in
- 7:04Speaker 4: keeping the straight open going forward. If they have a
- 7:07Speaker 4: couple of warships there in the Gulf along with us,
- 7:10Speaker 4: that really does send a powerful message to the Iranians,
- 7:12Speaker 4: don't try anything, because we've got real capabilities and real
- 7:16Speaker 4: assets across the Alliance that are prepared to take action
- 7:19Speaker 4: when necessary.
- 7:20Speaker 3: Nathan, it has been reported that this deal would end
- 7:23Speaker 3: all sanctions, and not just the sanctions, it would end
- 7:27Speaker 3: all waivers as well. What do you make of that portion?
- 7:34Speaker 4: Yeah, Well, the devil is always in the details, so
- 7:36Speaker 4: I'd like to see the text of the MoU, and frankly,
- 7:39Speaker 4: I suspect the MoU may not go into a whole
- 7:41Speaker 4: lot of detail about these finer points of sanctions relief
- 7:44Speaker 4: that may be subject to negotiation in the weeks and
- 7:48Speaker 4: months going forward. I think here's what I would say.
- 7:51Speaker 4: We need to make sure that whatever sanctions come off,
- 7:54Speaker 4: they are limited to the nuclear program, and it's pay
- 7:58Speaker 4: for play. The Iranians don't get any sanctions relief until
- 8:01Speaker 4: they actually demonstrate that they're upholding their end of the bargain.
- 8:05Speaker 4: We're not going to trade sanctions relief in exchange for
- 8:08Speaker 4: their agreement to talk. We should only exchange sanctions relief
- 8:11Speaker 4: in exchange for their demonstrated and irreversible commitments to end
- 8:15Speaker 4: their nuclear program.
- 8:16Speaker 2: That's the first point i'd make, Lawrence.
- 8:18Speaker 4: The second thing is I ran as subject to a
- 8:20Speaker 4: massive swath of different kinds of sanctions, not just related
- 8:24Speaker 4: to their nuclear weapons ambitions, but human rights, counter terrorism,
- 8:29Speaker 4: ballistic missiles. Unless they're prepared to change their behavior on
- 8:32Speaker 4: those issues, those sanctions need to stay in place.
- 8:36Speaker 3: I think that's critical considering last week we heard that
- 8:39Speaker 3: they're going to resume all these trials against their people,
- 8:41Speaker 3: these keys that are rising up after there was a
- 8:44Speaker 3: bloodbath of over thirty thousand people. So we'll be following
- 8:47Speaker 3: the ninth the sales. Thank you so much.
- 8:50Speaker 2: Thank you.
