Latest / Sri Aurobindo Studies / Transitioning from the View of a Body With a Soul, to a Soul With a Body

- 0:01The primary standpoint for most people is that they are a
- 0:05physical body endowed with life, mind and potentially in their
- 0:11minds, a soul. Everything starts from the
- 0:15primacy of the body and its centrality in their view of
- 0:18their lives. This makes the purpose of life
- 0:22one of survival and procreation, with vital enjoyments and mental
- 0:27preoccupations as possible ways to enjoy the sojourn in the
- 0:32body. For a relatively small
- 0:35percentage of people there comes a call to a spiritual awakening.
- 0:40For these individuals, the urge of the soul asserts itself to
- 0:43begin to examine the meaning of life, the significance of their
- 0:47specific life, and eventually there comes about a reversal of
- 0:53consciousness where the body is no longer the centre and cause,
- 0:58but rather is taken up and occupied by the soul.
- 1:03The image of an individual changing his clothes then comes
- 1:07into the picture as a metaphor for the soul taking up a body
- 1:11and using it for the soul's purpose, then discarding it and
- 1:16moving to another body and life suitable for the next stage of
- 1:20the soul's growth. We wonder how and why such an
- 1:25urge arises. This is where we can get
- 1:28intimations of pressure from the native domains of life, mind and
- 1:33spirit to grow and develop the latent powers that have involved
- 1:38in the material world. As the spiritual force gains
- 1:42more ascendancy, the individual finds that he may lose interest
- 1:47in the external life and its activities and potential
- 1:50rewards, and he begins to explore his inner life and being
- 1:55in a very intense way. He may feel that the outer life
- 1:59is something of an illusion or a distraction, or simply a prior
- 2:05focus that is no longer relevant to the deeper concerns that
- 2:09arise. It is not a matter of
- 2:12intellectual thought, but rather this seeking is something that
- 2:16goes much deeper, touches an aspiration for something more,
- 2:21some meaning, some relevance, some answers to the puzzle that
- 2:25is our existence, whether we call it a seeking for God or a
- 2:30seeking for our true self, or we call it a seeking for liberation
- 2:36from the outer life. Just as a child grows and leaves
- 2:41behind his preoccupations and his toys of his youth, so the
- 2:45human individual, as he grows inwardly, leaves behind the
- 2:50vital and mental preoccupations that demanded his focus prior to
- 2:54that awakening soul aspiration. This then begins his larger
- 3:00existence based on the centrality of his soul and his
- 3:04entire viewpoint about life, its purpose and significance and his
- 3:10role in the world undergoes a radical shift of focus.
- 3:16Sri Aurobindo observes. Quote.
- 3:19A secret, continuous action of the higher powers and principles
- 3:22from their own planes upon terrestrial being and nature,
- 3:26through the subliminal self, which is itself a projection
- 3:30from those planes into the world born of the inconscience, must
- 3:35have an effect and a significance.
- 3:38Its first effect has been the liberation of life and mind out
- 3:42of matter. Its last effect has been to
- 3:45assist the emergence of a spiritual consciousness, a
- 3:48spiritual will and spiritual sense of existence in the
- 3:53terrestrial beings, so that he is no longer preoccupied solely
- 3:58with his outermost life or with that and mental pursuits and
- 4:03interests, but has learned to look within, to discover his
- 4:07inner being, his spiritual self, to aspire to overpass earth and
- 4:13her limitations. As he grows more and more
- 4:17inward, his boundaries, mental, vital, spiritual, begin to
- 4:22broaden. The bonds that held life, mind,
- 4:26soul, to their first limitations loosen or snap.
- 4:31And man, the mental being, begins to have a glimpse of a
- 4:34larger Kingdom of self and world, closed to the first earth
- 4:39life. No doubt, so long as he lives
- 4:43mainly on his surface, he can only build a sort of
- 4:46superstructure, ideal and imaginative and ideative, upon
- 4:52the ground of his normal narrow existence.
- 4:55But if he makes the inward movement which his own highest
- 4:59vision has held up before him as his greatest spiritual
- 5:02necessity, then he will find there in his inner being a
- 5:09larger consciousness, a larger life.
- 5:13An action from within and an action from above can overcome
- 5:18the predominance of the material formula, diminish and finally
- 5:23put an end to the power of the in conscience, reverse the order
- 5:27of the consciousness, substitute the spirit for matter as his
- 5:31conscious foundation of being, and liberate its higher power to
- 5:36their complete and characteristic expression in the
- 5:39life of the soul embodied in nature.
