- 0:41Speaker 2: and Excavation.
- 0:42Speaker 3: Devin Dampier, welcome back to the show. How are you, sir?
- 0:45Speaker 4: Man, doing well, doing well. Happy to have another week
- 0:49Speaker 4: of playing football.
- 0:50Speaker 3: 2-0 for your Utes, up to No.
- 0:52Speaker 2: 17 in the national rankings, beating an Arkansas Razorbacks team
- 0:57Speaker 2: that was only the second SEC squad to come into
- 1:00Speaker 2: Rice-Eccles Stadium as visitors.
- 1:02Speaker 3: Night game, great atmosphere.
- 1:05Speaker 2: Tell me how you felt walking out onto that field
- 1:08Speaker 2: for that game and in that place with all those
- 1:11Speaker 2: people who want to watch and see what No.
- 1:13Speaker 3: 4 could do.
- 1:14Speaker 4: Man, I mean, first....
- 1:17Speaker 5: I think there was a little extra.
- 1:19Speaker 4: Motivation going into that game. Just a couple of things
- 1:21Speaker 4: being said before. And, you know, we just, you know,
- 1:26Speaker 4: we're a very respectful team. We, we don't play, we
- 1:29Speaker 4: play very, I would say we play very nasty, relentless,
- 1:33Speaker 4: but you know, we're a normal, respectful team.
- 1:36Speaker 5: So just to hear that from the other.
- 1:37Speaker 4: Side definitely gave us some motivation and especially our crowd,
- 1:42Speaker 4: you know, they, they packed it out.
- 1:43Speaker 5: They made sure that They felt that energy.
- 1:46Speaker 4: And man, I try to tell people you don't lose
- 1:49Speaker 4: that night. Dark hours get real.
- 1:53Speaker 3: On the field.
- 1:53Speaker 2: As the game progressed, how, how were the Arkansas Razorbacks
- 1:57Speaker 2: like as opponents were they trash talking type? Were they
- 2:01Speaker 2: guys like when you got hit, they let you know
- 2:03Speaker 2: about it. Like how did that vibe play out as
- 2:05Speaker 2: the game progressed?
- 2:08Speaker 4: Yeah. I would, I would say, they were feeling a
- 2:14Speaker 4: little confident at the beginning. And then I think we just,
- 2:18Speaker 4: I think we played in a way where, you know,
- 2:20Speaker 4: it was, it was dominant, both sides of the ball, honestly,
- 2:24Speaker 4: at that defense, you know, for them to continue to
- 2:28Speaker 4: get stops and let us play on short field. And
- 2:31Speaker 4: we definitely tried to make the most, most of it
- 2:33Speaker 4: on offense. And, you know, I just thought we were
- 2:35Speaker 4: clicking on all cylinders.
- 2:36Speaker 2: Speaker 0 7, I know you were asked about this
- 2:38Speaker 2: in the post game presser and We have talked about it.
- 2:41Speaker 3: It's going to be a theme, I think, with these conversations.
- 2:44Speaker 2: Your guy, Mac G, he's in his bag, and he
- 2:47Speaker 2: is a mad scientist, and he is not afraid to
- 2:51Speaker 2: do anything unorthodox.
- 2:52Speaker 3: First play of the game, double pass. You to Bird,
- 2:55Speaker 3: Bird to Wayshon.
- 2:57Speaker 2: And it kind of was a tone setter, I think,
- 2:59Speaker 2: when you guys got out there offensively. You were laughing
- 3:02Speaker 2: about how, you know, that got put in as the
- 3:05Speaker 2: first play of the game. But for the people who
- 3:07Speaker 2: did not get to hear you post-game, recount that story
- 3:10Speaker 2: again for me. Like, that is a really kind of
- 3:13Speaker 2: like out-of-this-world play to start a game with.
- 3:16Speaker 3: And yet, that was play number one.
- 3:20Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah.
- 3:20Speaker 4: So, no, me and Maggie, we run through the offensive
- 3:24Speaker 4: script that Friday. And he was like, I'm.
- 3:28Speaker 5: Putting that first. And I got first, you know, I.
- 3:31Speaker 4: Didn't I didn't necessarily believe him fully. I was like,
- 3:34Speaker 4: there ain't no way he can start off with a
- 3:35Speaker 4: double pass.
- 3:36Speaker 5: And then we got to Saturday.
- 3:38Speaker 4: We had our offensive unit meeting before and he was like.
- 3:42Speaker 4: he was like, I ain't going back on my word.
- 3:43Speaker 5: Like we coming out, we coming out with.
- 3:45Speaker 4: A double pass and everybody was like, oh, he's real
- 3:47Speaker 4: about to do it. So, you know, he's all about
- 3:51Speaker 4: keeping his word and, you know, we trust him with
- 3:55Speaker 4: what he calls out there.
- 3:56Speaker 5: And as you can see, it works out.
- 3:58Speaker 2: Speaker 0 7th, it does work out another big performance
- 4:02Speaker 2: for you all offensively. Look, Arkansas, I give him credit
- 4:05Speaker 2: for that first drive, chewed up half of the first quarter.
- 4:09Speaker 2: then the defense boat up, they only gave up the
- 4:11Speaker 2: three points. And then it was basically youths the whole
- 4:14Speaker 2: rest of the way. Did, did what you saw actually
- 4:18Speaker 2: see from them, what you saw from them defensively in
- 4:21Speaker 2: real gameplay, did it kind of match your expectations based
- 4:24Speaker 2: on the week of film study?
- 4:27Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 4:28Speaker 5: I definitely thought they were, you know, as big.
- 4:30Speaker 4: As they looked on film, you know, I think when
- 4:34Speaker 4: you talk about size, I think there's a sec, they
- 4:37Speaker 4: normally get the sizing and stuff, but I mean, we,
- 4:41Speaker 4: we just, we knew we had to go into this game.
- 4:43Speaker 4: We had to prepare the right way and, you know,
- 4:45Speaker 4: play the way we do. And that was going to
- 4:46Speaker 4: get us to win.
- 4:47Speaker 5: So I thought we did a good job of that.
- 4:51Speaker 1: Way.
- 4:51Speaker 2: Sean had another great game, 10 carries. So I think
- 4:55Speaker 2: there's a lot of people who expect at some point
- 4:57Speaker 2: that the the handoffs will increase to weigh Sean 10
- 5:01Speaker 2: carries on the ground over five yards average on the ground.
- 5:04Speaker 2: He had again, five catches in the passing game. One
- 5:08Speaker 2: of those was a touchdown catch. And, you know, we
- 5:11Speaker 2: had a chance to talk with him after practice the
- 5:13Speaker 2: other day. He's obviously, you know, he's put in the
- 5:15Speaker 2: hard work this off season, as you said, as the
- 5:17Speaker 2: coaches have said, and it's paying off through these first
- 5:20Speaker 2: two games. Just talk to me about, you know, the
- 5:24Speaker 2: trust you all have in way Sean and his ability to,
- 5:27Speaker 2: in both the passing game and in the run game
- 5:29Speaker 2: to kind of be that, that guy, he's almost the
- 5:31Speaker 2: number one receiver, despite the fact that he plays running back.
- 5:36Speaker 4: Yeah, no, we, we told way Sean, you know, especially,
- 5:40Speaker 4: and that's something he's wanted, you know, we didn't have
- 5:42Speaker 4: to put that on him, but he wanted to be
- 5:44Speaker 4: a fully complete back. That was his mindset coming into
- 5:46Speaker 4: this year. And just the way our offense flows, you know,
- 5:51Speaker 4: especially with our deep threats, you know, we get a
- 5:53Speaker 4: lot of drop coverage and honestly deacon, the ball down
- 5:56Speaker 4: the way Sean is, That's the best part of the
- 5:59Speaker 4: play is put way Sean in space and let him
- 6:01Speaker 4: go do what he does. And just as efficiency on
- 6:04Speaker 4: being able to catch the ball and create plays in
- 6:06Speaker 4: the passing game. And then when we need him to
- 6:09Speaker 4: get those three yards for a first down, I mean,
- 6:12Speaker 4: give it away.
- 6:13Speaker 2: Speaker 2, he can run the ball. He can catch
- 6:17Speaker 2: the ball. You could throw the ball. You could also
- 6:20Speaker 2: run the ball very effectively. You did so again for
- 6:22Speaker 2: two touchdowns in this game against Arkansas. Last week when
- 6:26Speaker 2: we had this conversation, we were kind of looking at
- 6:29Speaker 2: the Idaho game post-matchup. It was like, yeah, maybe I
- 6:32Speaker 2: could have not taken this hit here or I could
- 6:34Speaker 2: have slid there or whatever. Tell me what the film study,
- 6:38Speaker 2: the coach's reaction to your game on last Saturday was like.
- 6:45Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 6:45Speaker 4: You know, I think my first I believe it was
- 6:49Speaker 4: the second or third drive where I felt like I
- 6:51Speaker 4: was just a little less efficient than I was the
- 6:54Speaker 4: rest of the night. And, you know, that was just
- 6:55Speaker 4: something that was communicated to me. Just slow down your brain,
- 7:00Speaker 4: slow down your process of what you're thinking out there.
- 7:02Speaker 4: And then also having an interception as well, just kind of,
- 7:07Speaker 4: it felt like I had a bad drive, then had
- 7:09Speaker 4: an interception back to back. So just to be able
- 7:12Speaker 4: to have, you know, my teammates, my coaches behind me, just,
- 7:15Speaker 4: you motivated me to go out there. We've seen you practice.
- 7:18Speaker 4: We've seen you do all this, just believe it's going
- 7:21Speaker 4: to happen. And, you know, that's, that was my mindset
- 7:24Speaker 4: to go back out there and do what I do.
- 7:26Speaker 4: And I thought, you know, after kind of those drives,
- 7:29Speaker 4: we were clicking our all cylinders, the rest of the game.
- 7:31Speaker 2: So take me inside your like individual mental reset process,
- 7:35Speaker 2: because that's a normal thing in the ebb and flow
- 7:38Speaker 2: of a football game. You're going to have a great series.
- 7:40Speaker 2: You're going to have one that's not so great. There
- 7:42Speaker 2: are going to be turnovers, right? And I think one
- 7:44Speaker 2: of the most important things for anyone in your position
- 7:48Speaker 2: is you've got to forget about that last one, and
- 7:50Speaker 2: you've got to go out and perform.
- 7:51Speaker 3: The next time. Do you have a deliberate process? Do
- 7:54Speaker 3: you have a method? Do you have, like, a self-speak?
- 7:56Speaker 2: Is there something that you do every time, or is
- 7:59Speaker 2: it just, you know, absorbing in the moment? Tell me
- 8:02Speaker 2: how that reset goes for Devin Dampier.
- 8:05Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 8:06Speaker 4: You know, I try not to be the.
- 8:08Speaker 5: Biggest isolator, but that is– I love that.
- 8:13Speaker 4: My teammates come next to me. They're telling me, we're good,
- 8:16Speaker 4: you're good, and all that. But I definitely need just
- 8:20Speaker 4: a quick thing. It's normally just 30 seconds.
- 8:23Speaker 3: A minute.
- 8:24Speaker 5: I kind of coast off to the sideline, away from people.
- 8:27Speaker 4: And just kind of breathe and let my body reset, relax,
- 8:31Speaker 4: and forget about it.
- 8:35Speaker 3: Is that something that you developed deliberately?
- 8:37Speaker 2: How did you come to that as your reset?
- 8:44Speaker 4: Just calming me down. I think when I'm able to
- 8:49Speaker 4: just make it where it's just me and me only
- 8:52Speaker 4: in my brain at that point, I'm able to kind
- 8:54Speaker 4: of talk to myself and just... tell myself to move on.
- 8:58Speaker 4: And it just, it seems to slow down my, my,
- 9:01Speaker 4: like my heart rate, my heart rates are going out
- 9:03Speaker 4: a little bit and, uh, I can just feel my
- 9:05Speaker 4: mind kind of ease down.
- 9:06Speaker 2: Um, Small grievance against you. We did not know that
- 9:11Speaker 2: you were a dancer.
- 9:12Speaker 3: Okay. You have not told us about this in the past.
- 9:16Speaker 2: You had your little MJ celebration on that last rushing touchdown.
- 9:20Speaker 2: Took a big lick credit to that. I think it
- 9:21Speaker 2: was a safety coming downhill. But at the end of
- 9:24Speaker 2: the day, you're in the end zone and then you're celebrating.
- 9:28Speaker 2: Where did the Michael Jackson come from?
- 9:31Speaker 4: Um, you know, I told him, I actually, I told
- 9:33Speaker 4: my little brother and my grandma, like this summer, I
- 9:36Speaker 4: was going to do that. I was going to be
- 9:38Speaker 4: my first Sally.
- 9:39Speaker 5: Um, my first touchdown, I was still frustrated about my interception.
- 9:42Speaker 4: So I, I didn't have it in my, my heart
- 9:45Speaker 4: to celebrate yet, but, uh, near definitely third quarter, it was,
- 9:49Speaker 4: you know, it was fully fleshed out. I was, I
- 9:51Speaker 4: was ready to hit it the next time I got
- 9:53Speaker 4: an end zone. So yeah, bust, bust them MJ.
- 9:57Speaker 2: And, the spider, the spider band celebration seems to be
- 10:00Speaker 2: catching on with everybody. I don't know if you noticed
- 10:03Speaker 2: the must is doing it now.
- 10:04Speaker 3: Some of your teammates are doing it. That's it's becoming
- 10:08Speaker 3: a branding thing.
- 10:10Speaker 4: Yeah, no, I, after the Michael Jackson, I like, I
- 10:13Speaker 4: turned to the must and I started webbing them.
- 10:16Speaker 5: Up and like all of them, all of them caught on.
- 10:19Speaker 5: So it was pretty sick.
- 10:20Speaker 3: That's pretty cool.
- 10:21Speaker 2: This year with dev, our conversation with starting quarterback, Devin
- 10:25Speaker 2: Dampier is brought to you by Culligan water of salt
- 10:27Speaker 2: Lake city, America first credit union and Valley plumbing, heating
- 10:32Speaker 2: and cooling Noah, Benny with a really big game. Four catches,
- 10:37Speaker 2: 113 yards. He was making fun of himself for stumbling
- 10:40Speaker 2: down to the sideline on that one catch. But just
- 10:43Speaker 2: a really incredible game from a guy who was part
- 10:47Speaker 2: of this program, transferred out, transferred back in, gets to
- 10:50Speaker 2: play with his brother again. And I'll be honest, there
- 10:53Speaker 2: were a lot of us kind of in the media
- 10:55Speaker 2: and in the fan base wondering if the tight ends
- 10:57Speaker 2: were going to be a huge factor in this offense.
- 11:00Speaker 2: And at least in the early goings, guys like Noah
- 11:03Speaker 2: Benny are starting to show what the tight end role
- 11:05Speaker 2: can be. for Mac G and for you talk about
- 11:09Speaker 2: his game. And is this something that you guys saw
- 11:11Speaker 2: in practice during the week and felt like maybe Noah,
- 11:14Speaker 2: Benny or the other tight ends were going to be
- 11:16Speaker 2: a weapon you could use in this matchup with Arkansas.
- 11:18Speaker 4: Speaker 4, yeah. We're normally like our offense is all
- 11:24Speaker 4: about like.
- 11:25Speaker 5: Where we can find the mismatches, where we can find what.
- 11:28Speaker 4: Works for us. And you know, me just being back there,
- 11:32Speaker 4: you know, I thought Noah First, talking about practice, Noah's
- 11:36Speaker 4: one of our harder workers. He definitely asked me for
- 11:41Speaker 4: the extra reps after practice if.
- 11:43Speaker 5: He felt like something didn't feel good to.
- 11:44Speaker 4: Him or he just wanted a second rep on it
- 11:47Speaker 4: so he felt good about it in the game. Everything
- 11:49Speaker 4: in there, we've definitely practiced before. We've built the scenario in.
- 11:53Speaker 4: Benny's such an athletic guy. And how big he is
- 11:58Speaker 4: and how much he fits in the run game and
- 11:59Speaker 4: stuff like that. Just how good he is in the
- 12:01Speaker 4: past game too is amazing. And yeah, just, I thought
- 12:04Speaker 4: there was some mismatches in the middle of the field.
- 12:07Speaker 4: I thought, you know, Benny being able to get in
- 12:09Speaker 4: the middle of the field, that's, that's where.
- 12:10Speaker 5: The throw was.
- 12:11Speaker 4: And he was definitely capitalizing on it.
- 12:15Speaker 2: Now you take a look at the offensive line. We
- 12:18Speaker 2: have talked about them. Every conversation you and I have
- 12:21Speaker 2: had since we restarted this for the 2026 season, we've
- 12:24Speaker 2: been talking about the offensive line. And still it's a
- 12:27Speaker 2: little bit unorthodox with how much rotation is going on.
- 12:30Speaker 2: But I think that I'm encouraged by it. I don't
- 12:33Speaker 2: want to put words in your mouth, but it feels
- 12:35Speaker 2: like it must be encouraging when they pass a test
- 12:38Speaker 2: against SEC talent. There's a couple of guys on that
- 12:41Speaker 2: defensive front for the Razorbacks that are probably going to
- 12:44Speaker 2: be playing on Sundays. Both of those guys were non-factors
- 12:48Speaker 2: against you, and you've got to give credit to the
- 12:50Speaker 2: offensive line for that.
- 12:51Speaker 3: You've been optimistic, and you've told us, just wait. I
- 12:54Speaker 3: trust my guys. You'll see.
- 12:56Speaker 2: But I felt like this was another opportunity for them
- 12:59Speaker 2: to kind of pass that test. And they did so
- 13:02Speaker 2: with flying colors. What were your thoughts on the offensive
- 13:04Speaker 2: line and their performance against Arkansas?
- 13:08Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm very proud of them. Yeah. Especially, you know,
- 13:11Speaker 4: who they have up front. We very much respect our opponent. And,
- 13:14Speaker 4: you know, we knew it was going to be a
- 13:15Speaker 4: challenge for a line going against them all game. And man, I, again,
- 13:21Speaker 4: I thought they handled it the best possible. It's, know, I, I,
- 13:25Speaker 4: I had those guys up all the time, but you know,
- 13:27Speaker 4: there's a point where I'm like, y'all see what they do.
- 13:29Speaker 4: Like the worry shouldn't be there anymore. Just cause of there.
- 13:34Speaker 4: I let them prove it on the field. I let
- 13:35Speaker 4: them show it on the field, how good they are.
- 13:37Speaker 4: And this is another week of, you know, them proving
- 13:40Speaker 4: that they were ready to step up.
- 13:41Speaker 2: Speaker 0 7, I appreciate the saving the collective mentality
- 13:45Speaker 2: that those guys have, where they haven't shied away from that,
- 13:49Speaker 2: that kind of like sentiment that people are like, I
- 13:52Speaker 2: don't know. had a really great offensive line last year.
- 13:55Speaker 2: These guys might be a big drop-off. When we talk
- 13:58Speaker 2: to them as individuals, every one of them mentions, like, no,
- 14:00Speaker 2: we know what people are saying about us, and we're
- 14:02Speaker 2: going to play with a chip on our shoulder so
- 14:05Speaker 2: that nobody feels that way. I mean, they keep performing
- 14:07Speaker 2: like this, and it's going to be one fewer thing
- 14:10Speaker 2: I can talk about on the show, right? We're not
- 14:12Speaker 2: going to be able to fill five minutes with, hey,
- 14:15Speaker 2: how's the offensive line going to do? Because, I mean,
- 14:18Speaker 2: they're really kind of stepping up to the plate here.
- 14:20Speaker 2: And I don't know if I've seen a whole unit–
- 14:23Speaker 2: share that exact same mentality as much as I've seen
- 14:25Speaker 2: it this year with those guys.
- 14:28Speaker 4: Yeah. That just talks about their characters from, you know,
- 14:31Speaker 4: them being behind those guys last year and you know, being,
- 14:36Speaker 4: being the starter now and still wanting one in the edge,
- 14:39Speaker 4: like it's, it's never enough for those guys. And you know,
- 14:41Speaker 4: that's what you want out of, out of your starters.
- 14:43Speaker 4: You want guys that want to continue to be better
- 14:45Speaker 4: than what they feel like is good. It's, it's never
- 14:48Speaker 4: good enough. And you know, that's, that's how those guys
- 14:50Speaker 4: are taking it.
- 14:52Speaker 2: Okay, back to the playbook because it is, I think,
- 14:55Speaker 2: one of the funnest, most interesting, most creative playbooks we've
- 14:58Speaker 2: seen so far in this 2026 season. And we speculated
- 15:02Speaker 2: on this with you and Bird and your relationship and
- 15:05Speaker 2: the ability that both of you guys have. We saw
- 15:08Speaker 2: another crazy play where it's, you know, you're the dive
- 15:12Speaker 2: man on an option and then you're also the quarterback
- 15:15Speaker 2: on the option. And now he's the pitch man. I
- 15:18Speaker 2: asked Bird after practice if that play also exists in
- 15:21Speaker 2: the playbook where you are the pitch man, where you
- 15:23Speaker 2: get the pitch back from Bird, and then you're the
- 15:25Speaker 2: guy who gets to score or whatever. Do you guys
- 15:28Speaker 2: fight over who gets to be what? Does Mac G say, no,
- 15:32Speaker 2: I need Devin playing this role? Do you guys decide
- 15:35Speaker 2: that between yourselves? When it is a two-quarterback... you know,
- 15:38Speaker 2: back and forth, who makes the decision on who ends
- 15:42Speaker 2: up with the ball on who runs, which role in
- 15:44Speaker 2: the play?
- 15:46Speaker 4: Yeah. You know, I, I normally call the shot, but
- 15:51Speaker 4: I think, you know, there's certain situations where I think
- 15:53Speaker 4: it benefits me more if I'm going a certain direction
- 15:57Speaker 4: and birds go another direction or vice versa. I think,
- 16:01Speaker 4: you know, it just, it benefits our offense depending on
- 16:05Speaker 4: which way the play is going. So, but we practice
- 16:08Speaker 4: it so much in practice by game day, you know,
- 16:10Speaker 4: we're kind of, we know exactly what's going on. I
- 16:14Speaker 4: give a look at the defense and then we'll kind of,
- 16:16Speaker 4: when we're, when we're both meeting at the middle, I'll
- 16:19Speaker 4: tell him he's taking QVR. You'll see him the other
- 16:23Speaker 4: way around. He'll point at me. So, you know, I mean,
- 16:25Speaker 4: we were pretty locked down on the playbook, but yeah,
- 16:28Speaker 4: Maggie's cooking up.
- 16:30Speaker 3: So, And I know you probably are sick of talking
- 16:33Speaker 3: about this.
- 16:33Speaker 2: You two have this kind of, like, unique relationship. Is
- 16:38Speaker 2: there any, like, selfish element to it that you have
- 16:40Speaker 2: to even fight? Like, where you're just like, man, I
- 16:42Speaker 2: want to be the one that ends up with the
- 16:44Speaker 2: ball in his hand. Or I know this play is
- 16:46Speaker 2: going to be big, so I want to be the
- 16:47Speaker 2: one throwing it.
- 16:48Speaker 3: Or I want to be the one, you.
- 16:50Speaker 2: Know, that receives the pitch.
- 16:51Speaker 3: Or whatever it is. Because.
- 16:53Speaker 2: that mad scientist stuff allows for so many different possibilities.
- 16:58Speaker 3: You and bird, you always say the right thing.
- 17:00Speaker 2: Do you always feel the right thing where you're like,
- 17:02Speaker 2: you know, I don't care as long as we score.
- 17:05Speaker 4: Yeah, no, I think, I think bird is, you know, for,
- 17:10Speaker 4: for him, like he knows he's the backup this year,
- 17:13Speaker 4: but he knows that we need, we need him on
- 17:15Speaker 4: the field as well. So him having that, being a
- 17:19Speaker 4: quarterback in that play playmaker mindset, you know, there's a
- 17:22Speaker 4: lot we ask on his plate and I just kind of, I'm,
- 17:26Speaker 4: I'm a guy, whatever gets the offense wrong, whatever, whatever
- 17:29Speaker 4: moves to change, you know, that's, that's what I'm in for. So,
- 17:32Speaker 4: and you know, bird's the same way he's, he, as
- 17:35Speaker 4: much as he knows I'm the starter, he's still trying.
- 17:38Speaker 5: To find a way to show value to our team.
- 17:40Speaker 5: Cause man, we need them on the field as well.
- 17:42Speaker 4: So, and I think he goes in there and, you know,
- 17:45Speaker 4: he does what he does that, at the highest levels
- 17:48Speaker 4: that he can. And it's a, it's great that, you know,
- 17:51Speaker 4: we're both able to be back there and do his
- 17:52Speaker 4: best for the team and wouldn't move the six.
- 17:56Speaker 2: How much of your own defense do you get to
- 17:58Speaker 2: watch during the actual games? Like I'm not paying attention
- 18:01Speaker 2: to where you are when the defense is on the field.
- 18:03Speaker 2: Obviously I'm watching what Arkansas is doing and what your
- 18:06Speaker 2: defense is doing. And I asked that question because like
- 18:09Speaker 2: Jai Moore had an unbelievable game and he You might
- 18:13Speaker 2: not know that until the game's over.
- 18:16Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 18:16Speaker 2: Do you get to watch your defense at all, or
- 18:18Speaker 2: are you talking to Mac G, talking to Jordan Gross
- 18:21Speaker 2: and everyone on the sideline when that's happening?
- 18:25Speaker 4: Yeah, I would say normally. I feel like we've been
- 18:28Speaker 4: scoring in about six, like eight plays, every kind of drive.
- 18:31Speaker 5: So normally if the other team gets.
- 18:34Speaker 4: A first down, then I get to watch our defense go.
- 18:37Speaker 4: But if our defense gets a three and out, man, it's,
- 18:40Speaker 4: it's cooked. I'm, I'm over there watching the.
- 18:42Speaker 5: iPad and then we're like, it's third down and third
- 18:44Speaker 5: down and third.
- 18:44Speaker 4: And I'm getting up.
- 18:45Speaker 5: So it depends how fast they, they get.
- 18:49Speaker 4: Off the field, honestly.
- 18:57Speaker 2: that a lot of people were expecting was coming at
- 18:59Speaker 2: some point.
- 18:59Speaker 4: Speaker 4, I did not get to see all, all
- 19:03Speaker 4: of jive, but I didn't get to see him until after,
- 19:07Speaker 4: after the game, obviously just going up.
- 19:10Speaker 5: To the press conference.
- 19:11Speaker 4: I was like, Oh wait, John was snapping. So, but yeah.
- 19:16Speaker 4: And then, you know, everybody's kind of talked to him
- 19:17Speaker 4: on the sideline. You, you hear people like Jai, Jai's
- 19:20Speaker 4: going crazy. And then.
- 19:23Speaker 5: I don't get to see it, but I'm like, bet bet.
- 19:26Speaker 2: That's that's got to be kind of cool it's like
- 19:28Speaker 2: a little like christmas present after the game where you're
- 19:30Speaker 2: like oh not only are we play well but look
- 19:31Speaker 2: what my guy did that's that's kind of nice i
- 19:33Speaker 2: like that yeah seven day up here for a couple
- 19:36Speaker 2: more minutes here edition with deb brought to you by
- 19:38Speaker 2: culligan water of salt lake city america first credit union
- 19:41Speaker 2: and valley plumbing heating and cooling uh so now turning
- 19:44Speaker 2: the page to utah state uh the battle of the
- 19:47Speaker 2: brothers they call it it is it's kind of one
- 19:50Speaker 2: of those weird games where it is also an in-state rivalry.
- 19:53Speaker 2: It is not the main rivalry. That's obviously BYU, but
- 19:58Speaker 2: there's a lot of familiarity between these two teams. You got,
- 20:02Speaker 2: you know, when your top receivers came from there last year,
- 20:04Speaker 2: your offensive coordinator came from there last year. That, I guess,
- 20:08Speaker 2: is the nature of college football these days. But what
- 20:11Speaker 2: are your expectations for Utah State? What do you know
- 20:14Speaker 2: about the Aggies?
- 20:16Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 20:17Speaker 4: So, Bronco Minnehall was my head coach at New Mexico
- 20:20Speaker 4: my sophomore year. And, you know, I personally know how
- 20:24Speaker 4: he runs the program and everything. He's very tough minded. Just,
- 20:28Speaker 4: just like us here at Utah. You know, he wants,
- 20:32Speaker 4: he wants his guys to be the tough minded people
- 20:35Speaker 4: that's able to play the full four quarters and.
- 20:39Speaker 3: Yeah, just fight.
- 20:39Speaker 4: So, you know, we're expecting, you know, very, very competitive
- 20:43Speaker 4: team to come out here. And, and, you know, there's,
- 20:46Speaker 4: there's that little bit of little brother, big brother kind
- 20:50Speaker 4: of mentality where, you know, they're, they're going to come out,
- 20:53Speaker 4: they're going to come out on on cylinders and we're
- 20:55Speaker 4: expecting that.
- 20:56Speaker 5: So, you know, we need to prepare the right way
- 20:58Speaker 5: as well.
- 21:00Speaker 3: What are they showing on film from what you've been
- 21:02Speaker 3: able to see so far?
- 21:05Speaker 4: Yeah, I think, you know, up front, I think, you know,
- 21:07Speaker 4: they're showing that, They can battle.
- 21:09Speaker 3: They can battle.
- 21:10Speaker 4: You know, I thought they battled Washington pretty well on
- 21:13Speaker 4: the run game. You know, they show they can be
- 21:15Speaker 4: there and, you know, they got some, they got athletic safeties,
- 21:19Speaker 4: athletic corners. So, I mean, yeah, but they're, they're very
- 21:24Speaker 4: well-rounded team. You know, there's a reason why they're able
- 21:26Speaker 4: to stick around with Washington and, you know, it's again,
- 21:31Speaker 4: our job to prepare the right way and, you know,
- 21:33Speaker 4: do what we do when game time comes.
- 21:35Speaker 2: OK, so now that we've seen some more of the
- 21:37Speaker 2: craziness in this playbook, do you feel like is that
- 21:41Speaker 2: going to be a theme that continues? I was asking
- 21:43Speaker 2: this question to one of our NFL guests yesterday, like
- 21:46Speaker 2: how sustainable this level of creativity is when you get into,
- 21:51Speaker 2: you know, not only a game like this one, but
- 21:52Speaker 2: when you get into like conference play and like. the
- 21:56Speaker 2: gadget plays, the stuff that people don't really see, is
- 21:59Speaker 2: that going to be part of this offensive identity, or
- 22:02Speaker 2: is this just something that you're putting on film so
- 22:04Speaker 2: everyone's got to prepare for it? Do we see more
- 22:07Speaker 2: of the craziness? Do we see more of the creativity
- 22:09Speaker 2: against Utah State?
- 22:12Speaker 4: Man, I would say, yeah. I mean, with who we
- 22:15Speaker 4: have back there, you know, I wouldn't.
- 22:19Speaker 5: Say– it may seem like it at times, but like, man, there,
- 22:24Speaker 5: there's so many elements to our, our, which I call
- 22:27Speaker 5: it gadget plays.
- 22:28Speaker 4: Like there's so many things that we can do during
- 22:30Speaker 4: those plays to make sure the play goes right. So, um,
- 22:35Speaker 4: you know, if the, if.
- 22:37Speaker 5: What we want to run isn't there, you know, there's
- 22:39Speaker 5: a way.
- 22:40Speaker 4: Uh, me and Bert can check out of something. There's,
- 22:43Speaker 4: You know, we don't have to do that. We don't
- 22:45Speaker 4: have to force it. So I feel like there's definitely
- 22:49Speaker 4: a good balance of the plays we're doing. Even though
- 22:52Speaker 4: they're exotic, there's definitely reasons why we're doing it and
- 22:56Speaker 4: why they work. There's reasons for it. So I think,
- 22:59Speaker 4: you know, it's a good element of our offense for
- 23:02Speaker 4: defenses to be able to prepare for every week because, man,
- 23:05Speaker 4: that just puts in a whole other 20 plays, 20
- 23:07Speaker 4: play scenarios that they could expect and didn't ever happen,
- 23:11Speaker 4: you know?
- 23:13Speaker 2: Even as I was asking the question, I guess I
- 23:15Speaker 2: wonder if gadget plays the right way to characterize this
- 23:17Speaker 2: because of what you just said, right? Gadget plays are
- 23:20Speaker 2: these things that you run once or twice during a
- 23:23Speaker 2: season and it's kind of, it's a home run or
- 23:26Speaker 2: it's a strikeout.
- 23:27Speaker 3: They're slow developing.
- 23:28Speaker 2: It's craziness that, you know, nobody has seen on film before,
- 23:32Speaker 2: but if that's, if that's not the approach in these
- 23:36Speaker 2: plays and if there are, secondary options or their check
- 23:39Speaker 2: down or check out options. And it's just part of
- 23:41Speaker 2: the fabric of the offense. I guess gadget play probably
- 23:44Speaker 2: isn't the right way to characterize that.
- 23:47Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 23:47Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 23:47Speaker 3: That's a, yeah.
- 23:48Speaker 4: It's almost like just, it's, it's a normal, it's a
- 23:52Speaker 4: normal offense to play, but we got to, we got
- 23:54Speaker 4: a good way of dressing it up for sure. And
- 23:57Speaker 4: you know, if, if, if it isn't there yet, again,
- 24:00Speaker 4: there's always a way to check out of it and make.
- 24:03Speaker 5: Sure we're in the right situation at the right time.
- 24:07Speaker 2: To get nitpicky, because that's what fans do when everything's
- 24:09Speaker 2: going very well.
- 24:10Speaker 3: There were people last week, myself included.
- 24:14Speaker 2: I was watching the second half of the game with
- 24:17Speaker 2: Eric Weddle and his people that he'd been inducted into
- 24:21Speaker 2: the Ring of Honor at halftime, which is cool to see.
- 24:23Speaker 2: But more than one of us were just like, man,
- 24:26Speaker 2: this game is already in hand.
- 24:29Speaker 3: There's no doubt that Utah is going to win this.
- 24:31Speaker 2: Why is Devin still in there and why is Devin
- 24:33Speaker 2: still running the ball and getting hit at the goal
- 24:36Speaker 2: line and things like that? How should we feel about
- 24:39Speaker 2: you being in when the game is already won? You're
- 24:44Speaker 2: a football player, so you don't mind, I'm sure, but
- 24:47Speaker 2: we don't want to see you get hit late in
- 24:49Speaker 2: a game that's already decided.
- 24:50Speaker 5: Exactly.
- 24:52Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 24:52Speaker 5: Um, you know, I'm, I'm a true competitor.
- 24:55Speaker 4: I think that, you know, that's one of my biggest
- 24:57Speaker 4: characteristics when it comes to football is, um, you know, I,
- 25:02Speaker 4: I didn't not even disrespectfully. I just, my mindset is
- 25:05Speaker 4: I want to put 50 on the board every single game.
- 25:07Speaker 4: Like that's just the.
- 25:08Speaker 5: Type of mentality that I have when I'm able.
- 25:11Speaker 4: To come out and play football. So, um, you know,
- 25:15Speaker 4: we weren't at 50 yet and I was just like,
- 25:16Speaker 4: let's keep going. Like, Let's keep moving the chains. Let's
- 25:19Speaker 4: keep doing what we do. And, you know, that's also
- 25:23Speaker 4: good work for me to just get, get those plays that,
- 25:27Speaker 4: you know, we, we practice maybe, I don't know, two, two,
- 25:30Speaker 4: 300 different plays during, during the week. And then, you know,
- 25:34Speaker 4: we only run.
- 25:34Speaker 5: 60 when we get out there.
- 25:36Speaker 4: So just to get a fill of what those plays
- 25:39Speaker 4: look like in practice and what they look like in
- 25:41Speaker 4: game two and making sure we're getting them in, you know,
- 25:44Speaker 4: that's also somewhat of that mentality as well.
- 25:48Speaker 2: Um, you mentioned it, you played for Bronco. What will
- 25:51Speaker 2: like a conversation, what will an interaction with Bronco Mendenhall
- 25:54Speaker 2: look like for you on game day? If you have one,
- 25:57Speaker 2: if you know, out in pregame warmups, cause I really
- 25:59Speaker 2: don't know what it's like in modern day college football.
- 26:03Speaker 2: When a coach loses his most important player to the
- 26:06Speaker 2: transfer portal. If there's bitterness, if there's hostility, I imagine
- 26:10Speaker 2: most coaches are just like, that's just, it's the nature
- 26:12Speaker 2: of the game these days.
- 26:14Speaker 3: Uh, what is your relationship with Bronco Mendenhall?
- 26:16Speaker 4: Like, Yeah, me and Bronco are like, I'm definitely going
- 26:22Speaker 4: to love him up, and I believe he's going to
- 26:25Speaker 4: love me up.
- 26:26Speaker 3: The same way.
- 26:28Speaker 5: We've had a lot of one-on-one conversations.
- 26:30Speaker 4: When he was my head coach of me going up
- 26:33Speaker 4: there and him trying to develop me as, one, a
- 26:36Speaker 4: football player, but just as a leader and coach. He
- 26:41Speaker 4: was kind of my first head coach that gave me
- 26:44Speaker 4: the leadership role, first time being a starting quarterback in college,
- 26:48Speaker 4: and he definitely paved the way for that. Yeah, just
- 26:51Speaker 4: so many one-on-one conversations, and it's also about life. So yeah,
- 26:57Speaker 4: there's definitely more than just we play football together. Yeah,
- 27:01Speaker 4: I'm expecting a good meet-and-greet when we see each other.
- 27:09Speaker 2: Well, we're looking forward to this game. I don't think,
- 27:12Speaker 2: are the uniforms red out again? Because twice now it's
- 27:15Speaker 2: been red on red on red, and I love that.
- 27:17Speaker 2: It's like the traditional, it's what Utah football is supposed
- 27:21Speaker 2: to look like in my book.
- 27:22Speaker 3: Do we know what the uniform is so far?
- 27:26Speaker 4: I believe there will be red. I will believe there
- 27:32Speaker 4: should be some red. You know, I try not to
- 27:34Speaker 4: spoil it with the.
- 27:37Speaker 5: Jersey reveal.
- 27:38Speaker 4: I don't want to be put on the spot for
- 27:42Speaker 4: telling the jersey combination.
- 27:44Speaker 5: The jersey reveal isn't out yet.
- 27:46Speaker 3: You know what?
- 27:46Speaker 2: That's my fault because I shouldn't put you in that
- 27:49Speaker 2: position because, you know, equipment is supposed to be able
- 27:53Speaker 2: to put the announcement out themselves.
- 27:54Speaker 3: That's my bad, Dev.
- 27:56Speaker 2: But that's how, you know, Devin, Deb here is savvy
- 28:00Speaker 2: with the media.
- 28:00Speaker 3: Now there will be red.
- 28:02Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 28:02Speaker 3: We'll have some red on there. Oh, thank you, sir. Wonderful.
- 28:05Speaker 4: I'm glad to hear it.
- 28:07Speaker 5: What other colors is going to be out there?
- 28:09Speaker 3: Oh, that's crazy. All right, Dev. Well, good luck. Stay healthy.
- 28:13Speaker 3: We'll see you up there on Saturday.
- 28:14Speaker 2: All right.
- 28:16Speaker 5: Awesome.
- 28:16Speaker 4: Appreciate you.
- 28:17Speaker 3: That is Devin Dampier
- 28:19Speaker 2: Dishing with Dev, brought to you every single week by
- 28:21Speaker 2: Culligan Water of Salt Lake City, America First Credit Union,
- 28:25Speaker 2: and Valley Plumbing, Heating, and Cooling.
