- 1:44Speaker 3: The recket recket.
- 1:48Speaker 1: Here, ladies and gentlemen, we are joined by the fantastic
- 1:58Speaker 1: Daniel van Kirk, diehard Bears fan. Daniel, I'm not one
- 2:04Speaker 1: of those guys who takes joy in other people's sports pain,
- 2:09Speaker 1: so that's not what I'm doing. We're coming off the
- 2:11Speaker 1: heels of another loss for you, guys, to the Packers,
- 2:14Speaker 1: and in almost comical fashion, one that I thought you
- 2:18Speaker 1: had sewed up. Where are you at as a Bears fan?
- 2:23Speaker 1: Because here's the funny. Here's the thing that I think
- 2:25Speaker 1: is fascinating. Sure, so many Viking fans are like the Vikings.
- 2:29Speaker 1: Packers is this ultimate rivalry, and it is to some degree.
- 2:34Speaker 3: It's definitely a rivalry. It's definitely a solid, good rivalry,
- 2:38Speaker 3: but it's not.
- 2:39Speaker 1: Bears Packers, Bears Packers, Like if you go on these
- 2:41Speaker 1: people's comments threads, it's like it's a different mean thing
- 2:46Speaker 1: that exists in very rarefied spaces in the sports universe. Celtics, Lakers,
- 2:53Speaker 1: that sort of stuff.
- 2:54Speaker 2: Yeah, it's a it's a true entity.
- 2:56Speaker 3: I mean, Chicago also has that with Cubs and Cardinals,
- 3:00Speaker 3: and had it for a long time with Red Wings
- 3:03Speaker 3: and Blackhawks, and very similar in both of those other
- 3:07Speaker 3: two scenarios. I would say it wasn't much of a
- 3:09Speaker 3: rivalry in terms of.
- 3:10Speaker 1: Who did the winning.
- 3:12Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 3:12Speaker 3: Yeah, and in their own unique ways, the reasons for
- 3:17Speaker 3: that that contributed to a loss were special and fun
- 3:21Speaker 3: in their own way. I'll say this too out the
- 3:25Speaker 3: gate for anybody who doesn't know me. I'm born and
- 3:28Speaker 3: born and raised in Rochelle, Illinois, small little farmtown about
- 3:31Speaker 3: forty minutes south of the Wisconsin border. And I lived
- 3:35Speaker 3: ten years in Chicago, and I am the typical Chicago guy.
- 3:41Speaker 3: I worked at the Cubby Bear across the huge bar
- 3:44Speaker 3: across from Wrigley Field. I worked at Marshall Fields. I
- 3:48Speaker 3: even was a federal agent in Chicago for a while,
- 3:51Speaker 3: so I did Chicago law enforcement to some extent, only
- 3:54Speaker 3: on a federal level. I started at Second City. You're
- 3:58Speaker 3: not going to get much more cookie cutter. Chicago gavee
- 4:02Speaker 3: you want. I'll talk like this a whole thing. Had
- 4:05Speaker 3: no problem with that, And we can talk about the
- 4:07Speaker 3: freeway and how long it took us getting through Madison
- 4:09Speaker 3: and the Mouth south off Exit one thirty two. But
- 4:12Speaker 3: you split off with the Petro because you're going up
- 4:13Speaker 3: to the Napolis to go hang out with your fan.
- 4:16Speaker 3: I can do that as well. But I do not
- 4:19Speaker 3: revel in sports negativity. I don't wish Ill will on
- 4:23Speaker 3: other teams. You'll never see me clap for an injury.
- 4:26Speaker 3: The Vikings are on a having a great season, and
- 4:30Speaker 3: I think that's awesome because it's I don't hope for
- 4:33Speaker 3: any other team to lose. I hope for my team
- 4:35Speaker 3: to win when they play those teams. If you do,
- 4:37Speaker 3: that doesn't really matter what other people did. I've had
- 4:40Speaker 3: a lot of respect for the Vikings for a long time,
- 4:43Speaker 3: and what they've done in the past few years to
- 4:46Speaker 3: kind of like no pun intended write that ship, and
- 4:51Speaker 3: what the Packers have done forever in terms of identifying
- 4:56Speaker 3: and maturing talent. You know, those are things I'm not
- 4:59Speaker 3: gonna hate them for that. I'm gonna wish my fandom
- 5:02Speaker 3: was to a team that did those same things. And
- 5:06Speaker 3: that's a long way of saying we don't, we do
- 5:13Speaker 3: not do that. It's heartbreaking, man. And to talk about
- 5:20Speaker 3: the rivalry too, to kind of put a button on that,
- 5:22Speaker 3: it's special, right, I like it. It's sort of like
- 5:27Speaker 3: that whole argument of like Jordan over Lebron. For a
- 5:30Speaker 3: while it was like Jordan over Kobe, and then somebody
- 5:32Speaker 3: will be like, what about Bill Russell and he's better
- 5:35Speaker 3: than Jordan? And I always say to those people, the
- 5:37Speaker 3: one constant that you're arguing about all the time is
- 5:40Speaker 3: who's better than Jordan?
- 5:41Speaker 2: So that's kind of all you need to know.
- 5:43Speaker 3: So no matter how bad the Bears are, it's always like, well,
- 5:48Speaker 3: we're sort of the real rival with the Packers over
- 5:50Speaker 3: the Bears. And somebody goes, well, we kind of have
- 5:52Speaker 3: a thing with them too, over the Bears. Well, you're
- 5:54Speaker 3: kind of always saying the Bears, like Detroit's not arguing
- 5:56Speaker 3: with Minnesota over who has the real rivalry.
- 5:58Speaker 2: Against the Packers? Right, right?
- 6:00Speaker 3: And the Packers are obviously the top of the mountain
- 6:03Speaker 3: and have been for close to thirty five years because
- 6:05Speaker 3: they've earned that spot.
- 6:06Speaker 1: Well, they locked into it.
- 6:07Speaker 3: But keep going, I would agree. But everybody wondered what
- 6:13Speaker 3: they were doing when they cut Favra. Yes, but they
- 6:16Speaker 3: made that decision and that was the right call, and
- 6:17Speaker 3: they seem to have made another good decision.
- 6:20Speaker 1: Here's what I will say, though, although our records are
- 6:22Speaker 1: very different and this season is very different, Yeah, I
- 6:26Speaker 1: think our two teams are in a very similar spot
- 6:30Speaker 1: compared to the other two teams simply by Jared Goff's
- 6:34Speaker 1: deal kick in in the next year and it it'll
- 6:37Speaker 1: really start to affect the roster. Jordan loves deal is
- 6:40Speaker 1: going to pick in and affect the roster. Those will
- 6:43Speaker 1: be very differently built teams. And where I didn't expect
- 6:48Speaker 1: the Vikings to be eight and two this year, it.
- 6:50Speaker 3: Doesn't feel very fluky, doesn't like last year had more
- 6:53Speaker 3: flukey plays for the Vikings that game against the Bills
- 6:56Speaker 3: or two years ago, two years ago, Yeah, when it
- 6:57Speaker 3: should have been over three times. Yes, that was Ian
- 7:00Speaker 3: Sid I was listening to the Minnesota call on the radio.
- 7:03Speaker 1: Oh boy, Paul Allen. Yeah.
- 7:05Speaker 3: I was driving and I was like yeah, and I'm like,
- 7:07Speaker 3: I have to hear the Minnesota call this and they
- 7:10Speaker 3: were talking about, you know, they're essentially doing the like credits,
- 7:13Speaker 3: we want to thank everybody who helped out today. And
- 7:15Speaker 3: then it wasn't over. But that's not happening with the
- 7:18Speaker 3: Vikings much this season.
- 7:19Speaker 1: No, there was this ESPN put out this thing today
- 7:24Speaker 1: talking about how that season they went thirteen and four.
- 7:27Speaker 1: It felt fluky and all DVA this advanced metric that
- 7:32Speaker 1: I'm not smart enough to understand these people who are going, hey,
- 7:35Speaker 1: they're not quite winning as well as they did earlier
- 7:38Speaker 1: in the year. No, no, no, no, No. The DVOA
- 7:40Speaker 1: is great. This is a really really good football team.
- 7:43Speaker 1: And I think the thing I had two turning points
- 7:47Speaker 1: in this season. The first one was really early in
- 7:49Speaker 1: the year. I started hearing things and not from people
- 7:53Speaker 1: within the organization, but just from people close to some
- 7:56Speaker 1: players and you know, stuff like that where they're was
- 8:00Speaker 1: just a belief in the locker room that I think,
- 8:03Speaker 1: once you get past the preseason, you can't fake it.
- 8:06Speaker 1: These guys know whether or not they're a good team.
- 8:08Speaker 1: By week one or two. They you know, like the Dolphins,
- 8:11Speaker 1: they're four and six, they've had this weird year. I
- 8:14Speaker 1: think they know they're a pretty good football team and
- 8:17Speaker 1: they should be the same thing with the Bengals, regardless
- 8:20Speaker 1: of what's happening. I think the Vikings walked into this
- 8:23Speaker 1: season and we all you could kind of see it
- 8:25Speaker 1: in press conferences and stuff where we all went holy
- 8:28Speaker 1: and they were walking around going like, yeah, we knew this, right,
- 8:32Speaker 1: I'm normally the I'm worried it's gonna fall apart fan,
- 8:36Speaker 1: right because it's a very Minnesota.
- 8:38Speaker 2: The party town.
- 8:39Speaker 1: Yeah, it's a very very Yeah. I didn't assume you
- 8:42Speaker 1: were sitting there on Sunday like it's gonna be great
- 8:44Speaker 1: when he drills this field goal. The last few games,
- 8:50Speaker 1: you know, they lost. They lost a game to the
- 8:53Speaker 1: Rams that was ugly, and then these last few wins
- 8:56Speaker 1: just haven't been anything special.
- 8:59Speaker 2: The Rams are also like a show up team. You
- 9:01Speaker 2: don't know who's show and when you.
- 9:03Speaker 1: Play the Lions four days later after you play the Lions,
- 9:06Speaker 1: that's a team that beats you up. I think that
- 9:07Speaker 1: was a hard game.
- 9:08Speaker 3: You have a whole locker room of guys who were
- 9:10Speaker 3: trained by Aaron Donald, correct the whole locker room guys
- 9:12Speaker 3: who are like, well, that's the level and that's going
- 9:14Speaker 3: to carry over from a couple of years just in
- 9:17Speaker 3: terms of mentality.
- 9:18Speaker 1: Yeah, and getting both those receivers back for that game
- 9:21Speaker 1: was no joke.
- 9:22Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 9:22Speaker 1: I've got this weird thing going on where I think
- 9:24Speaker 1: there's a real universe that this team hits a stride
- 9:28Speaker 1: in December and they're actually a contender. And that's not
- 9:31Speaker 1: a thing I ever say, but I've bought in on
- 9:35Speaker 1: a pretty gross level.
- 9:36Speaker 2: I would say.
- 9:37Speaker 3: I think from the outside looking in, you you you should. Yeah,
- 9:41Speaker 3: they It's it's gonna come down to probably three games.
- 9:44Speaker 3: Three games are going to tell you exactly what this
- 9:46Speaker 3: team is going to do, and if not all three,
- 9:49Speaker 3: two of those are going to come against the Lions
- 9:50Speaker 3: and the Packers.
- 9:51Speaker 1: Yep, yep, that's exactly right.
- 9:53Speaker 3: You know, from a Bears standpoint, you're looking at like
- 9:56Speaker 3: those you know, I think the first three losses they
- 10:00Speaker 3: didn't have Keenan Allen, they were within a score. Then
- 10:04Speaker 3: you look at the Commander's game and a lot of
- 10:09Speaker 3: people want to come down on it. I think his
- 10:12Speaker 3: name was Stevenson, and they want to come down on him,
- 10:17Speaker 3: or they want to yell about fifty five getting held
- 10:20Speaker 3: and say, oh, that's why they lost. Now I will
- 10:24Speaker 3: say part of that is why he lost. I don't
- 10:25Speaker 3: think it has anything to do with the whole Do
- 10:27Speaker 3: you want to call that? Sure, call it, you don't
- 10:28Speaker 3: want to call it. It's a final play of the game.
- 10:30Speaker 3: Somebody needs to make a play, and he had plenty
- 10:32Speaker 3: of times for somebody else to get off a block.
- 10:34Speaker 3: So the thing about it is and the difference between
- 10:38Speaker 3: the Vikings, the Lions and the Packers, it may come
- 10:42Speaker 3: down to. For let's say the Lions, it could you
- 10:45Speaker 3: could list a foot stacks worth a paper of differences,
- 10:48Speaker 3: and maybe for the Vikings you can go, oh, maybe
- 10:51Speaker 3: these teams are a little bit closer than we think.
- 10:53Speaker 3: But it isn't even just losing on the final play
- 10:57Speaker 3: against the Packers and Loon, he's losing against the final
- 10:59Speaker 3: play against the Commanders. It is a small thing that
- 11:02Speaker 3: is a huge difference, and that is coaching. Sure, it
- 11:06Speaker 3: is one hundred percent coaching, because and I'm not just
- 11:10Speaker 3: talking about Oh Stevenson wasn't coached enough. So he's out
- 11:14Speaker 3: here waving at fans rather thanetting out of play that
- 11:16Speaker 3: does have to do with coaching. But you know what's
- 11:18Speaker 3: even a bigger coaching thing before that giving up a
- 11:20Speaker 3: thirteen yard play and you and your press conference, ibra flus,
- 11:24Speaker 3: you go out and say, we don't really think that
- 11:26Speaker 3: thirteen yards mattered. And then the coach I'm forgetting his name,
- 11:29Speaker 3: but the coach for the Commanders comes out and goes
- 11:31Speaker 3: that thirteen yards was huge.
- 11:32Speaker 2: Riss. That made the whole difference in that game. Now,
- 11:34Speaker 2: what does that tell you?
- 11:36Speaker 3: Even if one of them is right and one of
- 11:37Speaker 3: them is wrong, it's irrelevant who's right and who's wrong.
- 11:39Speaker 3: It's a difference in coaching. And I'm gonna say the
- 11:41Speaker 3: guy who won is probably right. So the same thing
- 11:45Speaker 3: is true on Sunday. It's gonna come down to coaching
- 11:49Speaker 3: with the pack with what just happened at the Packers
- 11:51Speaker 3: because you have thirty four seconds left in a timeout
- 11:55Speaker 3: and you waste it.
- 11:56Speaker 1: Couldn't believe it, couldn't believe that, you would not couldn't
- 12:00Speaker 1: believe it.
- 12:01Speaker 3: That is a coaching decision. And you should know what
- 12:05Speaker 3: you're being scouted against as much on your own team
- 12:09Speaker 3: as the.
- 12:09Speaker 2: Team who's scouting against you.
- 12:10Speaker 3: And so to not get closer, which is going to
- 12:14Speaker 3: get the ball higher sooner, is insane. Who makes that
- 12:17Speaker 3: decision a coach? And I think that's why you can
- 12:22Speaker 3: look at a team that has a lot of talent
- 12:25Speaker 3: on it and go, where do you lose games? And
- 12:28Speaker 3: you lose games by not knowing how to coach your players.
- 12:30Speaker 3: Bill Parcells has that great quote, you treat every single
- 12:33Speaker 3: player the same, and he goes, no, not a chance,
- 12:36Speaker 3: because some of these guys could show up and be
- 12:39Speaker 3: a Hall of Famer and other guys have I have
- 12:42Speaker 3: to ride their ass to make them work hard. And
- 12:45Speaker 3: so that is where the Bears are so far away.
- 12:48Speaker 3: And the idea that you have this number one pick
- 12:51Speaker 3: and you're gonna get Caleb Williams or whoever you want,
- 12:54Speaker 3: and you're not gonna go after Harbaugh, and you're gonna
- 12:57Speaker 3: you're gonna have an overlap of mediocrity. At least get
- 13:01Speaker 3: it wrong by doing the right thing. That's why you
- 13:03Speaker 3: pick kayleb Willms. Right, everybody said, look, they can make
- 13:05Speaker 3: this pick and they can get it wrong, but no
- 13:07Speaker 3: one's going to say they shouldn't have made that pick.
- 13:08Speaker 1: Exactly. You're never gonna get blamed for taking Caleb Williams.
- 13:11Speaker 3: Do you may not go higher the right coach when
- 13:14Speaker 3: you get rid of ebraflues going into the twenty four season.
- 13:17Speaker 3: But no one's gonna say, well, you had to hang
- 13:20Speaker 3: on to ebra flus.
- 13:21Speaker 1: Yeah. Well, and the crazy thing is, and so I
- 13:26Speaker 1: when we did our initial search, I was a I'm
- 13:32Speaker 1: obviously we're thrilled to have our head coach. Right. When
- 13:36Speaker 1: you get somebody like that, it's rare. You know, you
- 13:40Speaker 1: look around, not just the NFL, professional sports and see
- 13:43Speaker 1: how many fan bases are so constantly frustrated with their coaches.
- 13:47Speaker 2: It is.
- 13:48Speaker 1: It is a rare place to feel that good about
- 13:51Speaker 1: your head coach. I also in the beginning of the process,
- 13:53Speaker 1: I was all in on Demico Ryans, which I think
- 13:56Speaker 1: that has proven out to be also a good option.
- 13:59Speaker 2: Yep.
- 14:00Speaker 1: But I never understood why people so quickly dismissed the
- 14:06Speaker 1: Harbaugh thing from a fans standpoint, like he now does
- 14:10Speaker 1: he wear out his welcome? It seems he probably does.
- 14:12Speaker 1: But in the history of football, who does this? Who
- 14:16Speaker 1: has won? Who just wins?
- 14:19Speaker 2: No matter?
- 14:19Speaker 1: Because Jimmy Johnson didn't win with the Dolphins, Bill Parcells
- 14:22Speaker 1: didn't win with the Cowboys, and he sure didn't win
- 14:25Speaker 1: as a front office person down in Miami, you know,
- 14:30Speaker 1: So I just don't. I think there's something unique to
- 14:34Speaker 1: what Harbaugh is does and it probably wears thin after
- 14:39Speaker 1: a while given everything that has followed him. But I mean,
- 14:44Speaker 1: I saw the stat for the Chargers where they were
- 14:47Speaker 1: like bottom third of the league, and rush attempts and
- 14:50Speaker 1: all these like rushing metrics. He comes in drafts a
- 14:53Speaker 1: tackle when there's wide receivers on the board and they
- 14:55Speaker 1: don't have any wide receivers right, and he's like, Nope,
- 14:57Speaker 1: I'm taking a tackle. He's a weapon. And then they
- 15:00Speaker 1: just they hire Greg Roman and they pound the shout
- 15:03Speaker 1: of the ball, and there's all these metrics about Justin Herbert.
- 15:06Speaker 1: He's throwing way less, but he's fifteen to one TD
- 15:10Speaker 1: to interception ratio going into last game, all these advanced
- 15:14Speaker 1: metrics about big time throws versus mistakes. He's just the
- 15:18Speaker 1: guy that we thought he was gonna be and they
- 15:20Speaker 1: haven't given him a weapon yet. So I yeah, I'm
- 15:23Speaker 1: if I'm a team that didn't hire a coach last year.
- 15:25Speaker 1: I mean, I'm sure there's other questions, but the Harbaugh thing,
- 15:28Speaker 1: there's got to be a lot of fan bases going.
- 15:30Speaker 2: Oh, what'd we do? Right?
- 15:32Speaker 1: It's not like the Chargers are a healthy organization historically.
- 15:36Speaker 3: Right, And look, the Bears could be a year or
- 15:38Speaker 3: two away from being that if they want to. But
- 15:42Speaker 3: for as long as you've looked down South, and for
- 15:44Speaker 3: as long as I've looked over at the lake, how
- 15:47Speaker 3: much have they ever decided to do that?
- 15:49Speaker 2: Never? They could? Next year?
- 15:51Speaker 3: Right, they're probably gonna end up with the top five pick.
- 15:53Speaker 3: They could flip that into two picks in the first round,
- 15:56Speaker 3: get some linemen and push everything that way, and then
- 16:00Speaker 3: get a coach who knows what they're doing and how
- 16:03Speaker 3: to be a leader of men and know the right
- 16:06Speaker 3: decisions to make. It's two different things. You have to
- 16:08Speaker 3: be able to do. You can know everything to do
- 16:09Speaker 3: if nobody cares to listen to you, it really doesn't
- 16:11Speaker 3: matter how good your ideas are. So you kind of
- 16:13Speaker 3: have to have both.
- 16:13Speaker 2: Right. Harball obviously has that in spades, and you look
- 16:16Speaker 2: at Detroit they have it too, But like they don't.
- 16:19Speaker 2: Could they go that route and start doing that? Yes?
- 16:24Speaker 2: Will they?
- 16:24Speaker 3: I have no reason to believe this. I said this
- 16:26Speaker 3: at the beginning of the season. When The Bears Future
- 16:29Speaker 3: was eight and a half and everyone was telling you
- 16:31Speaker 3: to pound the over right, pound the over pounding over
- 16:34Speaker 3: pound the over on that bet. The reason I agreed
- 16:36Speaker 3: with it is you've seen It's like going on a date.
- 16:40Speaker 3: You've seen a blind day, except for this time. You've
- 16:43Speaker 3: seen the girl right, and you've seen DJ Moore and
- 16:46Speaker 3: you've seen Romadonsay, and you've seen Keenan Allen and you
- 16:48Speaker 3: know what Swift can do, and you know what Caleb
- 16:50Speaker 3: is capable of and can he elevate that? But you
- 16:53Speaker 3: know you're not looking at somebody like Niche who's had Trubisky,
- 16:56Speaker 3: who's had six you know, a good guy, but he
- 16:58Speaker 3: had sixteen starts coming in who knows what we're that's
- 17:00Speaker 3: a blind date. So you've seen it and and there's
- 17:03Speaker 3: a lot of things about the girl that you like,
- 17:05Speaker 3: and you think she's really hot, and so you're very
- 17:07Speaker 3: optimistic that this is going to work out. And so
- 17:09Speaker 3: that is a thing Bears I was completely as Bears
- 17:12Speaker 3: fans were able to have because we it wasn't like,
- 17:15Speaker 3: well we have no idea, I'm not hopeful. It's like, well,
- 17:17Speaker 3: I do have an idea, so I am hopeful. Will
- 17:19Speaker 3: I be surprised if this ends up with all my
- 17:21Speaker 3: clothes being burned on the front lawn. No, I'm not
- 17:23Speaker 3: going to be that surprised because I've been dating long enough,
- 17:27Speaker 3: you know, on the on the banks of like Michigan,
- 17:30Speaker 3: staring over at Gary, Indiana and going maybe it isn't
- 17:32Speaker 3: that bad over there. So for the Bears, it's like,
- 17:37Speaker 3: can't will they make those changes? Will they do those things?
- 17:39Speaker 3: And coming off of Sunday's game against the Packers, if
- 17:43Speaker 3: you want me to rose color in any way, which
- 17:45Speaker 3: I'm happy to do, also go watch my special rose
- 17:48Speaker 3: Gold if you want me to do that in any way.
- 17:51Speaker 3: The Bears didn't lose because Caleb Williams played badhi, which
- 17:56Speaker 3: has been an earmark for so long with the why
- 17:59Speaker 3: they lose bad.
- 18:01Speaker 2: He didn't lose because did he throw a touchdown?
- 18:03Speaker 3: No? And I don't care. Had they gone two and
- 18:05Speaker 3: a half games without scoring a touch on, yes, that's insane.
- 18:09Speaker 3: They hadn't done that since two thousand and four. So
- 18:12Speaker 3: from that standpoint, you know, if it was the Broncos
- 18:17Speaker 3: and they lose that game, I'm obviously bummed for an
- 18:20Speaker 3: hour and then I have a rule where you don't.
- 18:22Speaker 3: I don't let sports ruin my day behind you. Yeah,
- 18:25Speaker 3: but it was the Packers, and for all intents and purposes,
- 18:29Speaker 3: they should have won that game.
- 18:31Speaker 2: The Packers played a little bit less.
- 18:32Speaker 3: Maybe the Bears get some credit for that, but they
- 18:34Speaker 3: played a little bit less than they normally should have.
- 18:36Speaker 3: The Bears played better than they had looked in a month,
- 18:38Speaker 3: and they should have won that game. So I'm comforted
- 18:41Speaker 3: by what I saw in Caleb that final drive. If
- 18:43Speaker 3: forgetting sacked, that's what I was gonna say. Two plays
- 18:45Speaker 3: he gets sacked and you're like, oh, I've seen this
- 18:48Speaker 3: three weeks yep, yes, and then convert, Convert, make a
- 18:53Speaker 3: play get out of a sack. He's so good at
- 18:56Speaker 3: ducking a sack you have to wrap him up and
- 18:59Speaker 3: stay on it. And the great thing about that is
- 19:01Speaker 3: is it's gonna make you risk a penalty every single
- 19:04Speaker 3: time you do that. So it makes a defensive player
- 19:06Speaker 3: think twice for how much am I going to stay
- 19:08Speaker 3: on this tackle? And he maximizes that and that is great.
- 19:12Speaker 3: But if anybody remembers anything from what I've said on
- 19:16Speaker 3: this podcast today, and I really appreciate you giving me
- 19:18Speaker 3: a place to event I don't have to go to
- 19:19Speaker 3: therapy later. The Bears would have ruined every They would
- 19:25Speaker 3: have ruined Patrick Mahomes. They would have ruined him. I
- 19:27Speaker 3: did there tell me one great quarterback who's had more
- 19:32Speaker 3: than two coaches, And I only say two because a
- 19:34Speaker 3: lot of times Montana goes and plays for the Chiefs,
- 19:37Speaker 3: or or you know, Brady goes down to Tampa Bay.
- 19:40Speaker 3: But tell me one like excellent in the argument, or
- 19:44Speaker 3: or or you know, very assured hall of famer who
- 19:47Speaker 3: had more than one system, more than one coach. It
- 19:50Speaker 3: doesn't exist.
- 19:51Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, I mean, you're right.
- 19:52Speaker 2: It has to be at most coordinators.
- 19:55Speaker 3: If my memory serves me quick, they would have ruined
- 19:58Speaker 3: everybody's I can't believe that Patrick Mahomes I can, and
- 20:01Speaker 3: thank god they didn't for Patrick Mahomes.
- 20:05Speaker 2: But what the Jets almost did to your guy? Yeah,
- 20:08Speaker 2: people thought Sam Donald was never going to really play again.
- 20:10Speaker 1: Yeah, it's this big you're seeing it in Cincinnati right
- 20:14Speaker 1: now where I saw Steve Young on Dan Patrick's show,
- 20:21Speaker 1: and you know, it's this remarkable thing where Dan Patrick
- 20:25Speaker 1: is like, what is going on here? Twenty seven touchdowns,
- 20:28Speaker 1: four interceptions, He's the first quarterback in the Super Bowl
- 20:31Speaker 1: era to have three hundred and fifty yards, three touchdowns
- 20:33Speaker 1: and no interceptions in three games and lose all three
- 20:36Speaker 1: of them. That's never happened in football. You know, Steve
- 20:40Speaker 1: Young goes, well, I think you have to look other
- 20:43Speaker 1: places than Joe Burrow, and he basically ends up saying
- 20:46Speaker 1: he goes everything flows from the very top down right,
- 20:50Speaker 1: And I think, I think when you look at some
- 20:52Speaker 1: of these organizations that you're talking about, and obviously that's
- 20:57Speaker 1: been the biggest conversation piece this year is quarterbacks and
- 21:01Speaker 1: their support and what that means and second chances and
- 21:05Speaker 1: all this stuff. You know, the vikings are, you know,
- 21:09Speaker 1: especially since Kevin O'Connell's been here, when you get those
- 21:12Speaker 1: I love looking at those ends of the year grades.
- 21:15Speaker 1: And I bet Chicago Bears fans probably hate looking at them,
- 21:18Speaker 1: but like the what it's like to be a player
- 21:21Speaker 1: there the ones in Cincinnati. I have a friend, a
- 21:26Speaker 1: comic friend, Alex Schubert, who, like I think, he wants
- 21:29Speaker 1: to light his computer on fire when they come out
- 21:31Speaker 1: every year. But you get a great organization and a
- 21:35Speaker 1: great coach, and yeah, you're right, most of these guys,
- 21:38Speaker 1: unless they are. You have the one rare case with
- 21:41Speaker 1: Drew Brees who leaves to go to New Orleans in
- 21:45Speaker 1: that weird situation. But other than that, the only time
- 21:48Speaker 1: these guys get a second system is usually when they
- 21:52Speaker 1: have their late career. I'm one hundred and fifty years old,
- 21:55Speaker 1: and I'm gonna win a Super Bowl with the Bucks
- 21:57Speaker 1: or the Broncos or the or get an AFC Championship
- 22:01Speaker 1: with the Chiefs. So yeah, I think I think you're
- 22:03Speaker 1: exactly right. When you see these things, it's it doesn't
- 22:06Speaker 1: to me. I guess I'll say this. I think, no
- 22:09Speaker 1: matter what, it's hard to get a like a Hall
- 22:12Speaker 1: of Fame quarterback, But when it ends up working, like
- 22:17Speaker 1: in Kansas City when Patrick Mahomes got there and it
- 22:20Speaker 1: worked and you went incredible organization, incredible general manager, all
- 22:25Speaker 1: time coach, super talent, like there's just no way. The
- 22:29Speaker 1: Patriots Robert Kraft learns from Eddie de Bartola on how
- 22:32Speaker 1: to treat players and run his organization. Bill Belichick is
- 22:36Speaker 1: who is Tom Brady? Like it makes sense when it
- 22:39Speaker 1: clicks down like that generally.
- 22:42Speaker 3: Yeah, and I just you know, I mean, yeah, the
- 22:45Speaker 3: Bears got rid of Shane Waldron and it looked like
- 22:47Speaker 3: the I think it was fifteen and seven carries between
- 22:52Speaker 3: the two running backs last week was I'm directionally correct
- 22:55Speaker 3: if I'm not on it, And so you saw much
- 22:58Speaker 3: more of a balanced play call.
- 23:01Speaker 2: You know.
- 23:01Speaker 3: But I think you and I sort of saw this
- 23:05Speaker 3: shift from superstar athletes, which we obviously has been around
- 23:09Speaker 3: for a long time, but I think really blew up
- 23:11Speaker 3: in the nineties and then in the early two thousands
- 23:14Speaker 3: to now like the athlete is basically the king, Like
- 23:17Speaker 3: it's a king athlete, right, And you bet that if
- 23:20Speaker 3: Andy Reid retires at the end of this year, which
- 23:23Speaker 3: I know an inclination he's going to but if he did,
- 23:26Speaker 3: Patrick Mahomes is going to pick their next head coach.
- 23:28Speaker 1: Yeah, oh yeah.
- 23:30Speaker 3: And because he should. And so whatever they did to
- 23:34Speaker 3: make Caleb come around to being like, yeah, I want
- 23:37Speaker 3: to play here, or he just realized like from a
- 23:38Speaker 3: pr standpoint, whatever, I just got to go along with it.
- 23:41Speaker 3: They had, you know, the Bears. For anybody who know,
- 23:44Speaker 3: they've never fired a head coach during the season.
- 23:46Speaker 1: Ever in the history of the organizations.
- 23:48Speaker 2: Never in season fired a head coach ever.
- 23:50Speaker 1: And they should let me ask you something that I
- 23:52Speaker 1: always mean to ask Bears fans like, do you ever
- 23:56Speaker 1: think about Lobby Smith?
- 23:57Speaker 3: Yes, but if you go back too, I think it
- 24:01Speaker 3: was twenty ten or whenever they love mean, I think
- 24:04Speaker 3: he was a ten and six team his final season.
- 24:07Speaker 3: There was a complacency that had kind of fallen in
- 24:10Speaker 3: there where he was. And I am very close to
- 24:14Speaker 3: saying I bet that you can quote me on this.
- 24:18Speaker 3: He was saying, I wasn't ready. I didn't have the
- 24:21Speaker 3: guys ready to play, and it was like a big
- 24:23Speaker 3: primetime game. Oh sure, And that sort of stuff just
- 24:27Speaker 3: sort of like happened. I mean, I remember there was
- 24:29Speaker 3: a New Year's Eve game in like two thousand and
- 24:32Speaker 3: I think it was two thousand and seven to two
- 24:34Speaker 3: thousand and eight, or maybe two thousand and six to
- 24:36Speaker 3: two thousand and seven where they played the Packers and
- 24:38Speaker 3: the Bears were already in the playoffs and they just
- 24:41Speaker 3: pretty much let the Packers win and they ended up
- 24:45Speaker 3: going on a run and I think they eliminated the
- 24:47Speaker 3: Bears in the playoffs that year.
- 24:48Speaker 1: Final that was Yeah, that was the year where they
- 24:50Speaker 1: won the Super Bowl as a wildcard team. Yeah, they
- 24:52Speaker 1: mailed that game in. I remember that game.
- 24:54Speaker 3: Yeah, And in the postgame, like Rex Grossman said that
- 24:57Speaker 3: he was thinking about his New Year's Eve party, and
- 25:00Speaker 3: so there was a lot of sort of just like love.
- 25:03Speaker 3: He is a great coach and people loved playing for him.
- 25:07Speaker 3: But I think things that it had just run its course.
- 25:10Speaker 3: I mean, Andy Reid ran its course in Philadelphia. Sure,
- 25:14Speaker 3: it's sort of hard to go back to that. Is
- 25:16Speaker 3: that what they need to sort of set the benchmark
- 25:18Speaker 3: for and go above? Yes, one percent, but there's no
- 25:23Speaker 3: need to go back in that direction. If you told
- 25:26Speaker 3: me that next season they hired Dion Sanders, I would
- 25:29Speaker 3: be one hundred percent in favor of it.
- 25:31Speaker 1: If for no other reason, that'd be so fun.
- 25:34Speaker 3: If for no other reason that you want to talk
- 25:37Speaker 3: about a culture change with the Bears, you want to
- 25:40Speaker 3: talk about a coach who is going to handle that
- 25:45Speaker 3: front office and handle that ownership and handle the expectations
- 25:49Speaker 3: for that team in such a different way. Like Tony
- 25:52Speaker 3: Dungee gets a lot of credit for what he did
- 25:54Speaker 3: with the Colts, but he doesn't get enough credit for
- 25:56Speaker 3: what he did with the Buccaneers.
- 25:57Speaker 2: And I'm not trying to take anything away.
- 25:59Speaker 1: Totally agree totally. He built an entire.
- 26:03Speaker 3: He changed that entire culture down there, that entire culture
- 26:07Speaker 3: where you know, the buccaneer with with the dagger in
- 26:10Speaker 3: his mouth went from we're going to guaranteed win to
- 26:12Speaker 3: a cool throwback for a team that's gonna smack you
- 26:15Speaker 3: in the mouth. And Gruden and his problematic emails can
- 26:17Speaker 3: come in and take their Super Bowl and that's all
- 26:20Speaker 3: great and good. But Tony Dungee turned that organization around.
- 26:24Speaker 2: Yep.
- 26:24Speaker 3: And whether it's Dion or someone after Dion, that sort
- 26:29Speaker 3: of step in that direction, to me would be such
- 26:31Speaker 3: an indication of we are not doing things the same
- 26:34Speaker 3: anymore here, And obviously I would hope it would work.
- 26:38Speaker 3: I mean, he's got currently, as we record this, he's
- 26:41Speaker 3: got a team that everyone seems to want to lose.
- 26:43Speaker 3: I'm not in that camp, but he's got the Colorado
- 26:46Speaker 3: Buffalo's the sixteenth team in the nation because he seems
- 26:51Speaker 3: to have really maybe he isn't the best play caller
- 26:54Speaker 3: or like best you know, X's and O's coach in
- 26:56Speaker 3: the world, but he's got guys who want to run
- 26:58Speaker 3: through brick walls. And I'll take some more of that
- 27:02Speaker 3: in Chicago.
- 27:03Speaker 1: And there's this whole thing where you know, we've become
- 27:06Speaker 1: so accustomed to assistant coaches coordinators who then become head
- 27:11Speaker 1: coaches and run one side of the ball. And if
- 27:13Speaker 1: you go back in the day a little bit, you know,
- 27:15Speaker 1: Tony Dungee came from Minnesota, where Denny Green had Brian
- 27:19Speaker 1: Billick and Tony Dungee. And you know, I'm not saying
- 27:21Speaker 1: Denny Green wasn't involved in the offense, right, but he
- 27:24Speaker 1: had coordinators. And just as a side note, Denny Green's
- 27:27Speaker 1: my favorite coach of all time. And he didn't the
- 27:31Speaker 1: organization didn't continue on that trajectory. But he did the
- 27:34Speaker 1: same thing in Arizona.
- 27:35Speaker 2: Yeah, and I don't think.
- 27:36Speaker 1: He ever truly got the credit for what he did
- 27:38Speaker 1: down there, going down to a place where like no
- 27:41Speaker 1: one wanted to be.
- 27:42Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean he gave us one of the greatest
- 27:44Speaker 3: Bears quotes of all time on that Monday night they
- 27:47Speaker 3: thought they were so great.
- 27:49Speaker 1: Let me ask you this, then, with everything you've said,
- 27:52Speaker 1: why the hell does my football team lose to your
- 27:55Speaker 1: team in Chicago every single year, no matter how we are,
- 28:00Speaker 1: how bad you are, Like, this is such an opportunity
- 28:05Speaker 1: for this team to distance itself from that vikings lore, Like,
- 28:10Speaker 1: because I think this is better than the past few
- 28:13Speaker 1: Bears team right now, past few Bears teams.
- 28:16Speaker 2: Ye. The ability, Yeah, and you're going to be coached
- 28:19Speaker 2: in the wrong direction or not.
- 28:21Speaker 1: And I think you need to go in and if
- 28:24Speaker 1: you give yourself a win, you know, outdoors on the road,
- 28:29Speaker 1: the way you want to control a game, I think
- 28:30Speaker 1: that's a It instills the thing in the locker room
- 28:33Speaker 1: and you can even that far of that vikings farv team.
- 28:35Speaker 1: I'm pretty sure lost to Chicago in a terrible way
- 28:37Speaker 1: against a bad team. We just never get it done.
- 28:40Speaker 1: And I don't I don't understand what that hold is
- 28:42Speaker 1: that that city has over this organization. Are other Do
- 28:46Speaker 1: other teams struggle there like that?
- 28:48Speaker 3: Can I be like super like meathead sports radio caller
- 28:52Speaker 3: about it?
- 28:53Speaker 2: I love it?
- 28:53Speaker 3: Yeah, I think that the Bears can traditionally and maybe
- 28:59Speaker 3: this this is something that comes from ownership. This is
- 29:01Speaker 3: the stuff we don't know, right, we don't walk in
- 29:02Speaker 3: these halls. But I think that they as an organization
- 29:05Speaker 3: and then the team itself can get up for.
- 29:07Speaker 2: Big rivalry games.
- 29:11Speaker 3: And you saw them do that for green Bay and
- 29:14Speaker 3: green Bay has an air of well, we're not going
- 29:17Speaker 3: to lose and I think they've won three of the
- 29:21Speaker 3: last like fourteen.
- 29:24Speaker 2: Or I'm sorry, the Bears are three and fourteen.
- 29:26Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, And so they sort of have this like, well,
- 29:30Speaker 3: we're not going to lose, and so as much as
- 29:32Speaker 3: the Bears can get up for it, the Packers are
- 29:34Speaker 3: still just sort of on the top bunk. And I
- 29:37Speaker 3: think that for the Vikings, and it's at Daniel Vankirk
- 29:40Speaker 3: if anybody wants to be mean to me, but I
- 29:43Speaker 3: think for the Vikings it's a one step below of
- 29:48Speaker 3: like we should win. I hope we do, and that
- 29:53Speaker 3: a lot of times when the Bears decide to get
- 29:55Speaker 3: up for a game, it doesn't cut their way. But
- 29:59Speaker 3: I think we are on the precipice. And this goes
- 30:02Speaker 3: across our entire division of everyone knowing they can beat
- 30:07Speaker 3: the Bears unless something changes there, like I do not
- 30:10Speaker 3: see you guys losing this.
- 30:12Speaker 1: Don't say it, don't want it?
- 30:14Speaker 2: Now? Do you expect me to say anything else? No?
- 30:17Speaker 3: Unless I was like three more lords deep, right, But
- 30:20Speaker 3: like I don't know what team for mine is going
- 30:23Speaker 3: to show up. Ye, so if I average it out,
- 30:26Speaker 3: they're not as good as if we average out your team,
- 30:30Speaker 3: can they win? Of course they can't. They should have
- 30:32Speaker 3: won three more games this year, and could have won
- 30:35Speaker 3: one to two more on top of that had they
- 30:38Speaker 3: executed and or been coached appropriately. So, yeah, Bears can
- 30:44Speaker 3: win that game. Do I see that happening?
- 30:47Speaker 2: No?
- 30:48Speaker 3: And again to be a little meatthead about it without
- 30:51Speaker 3: being a championship caliber team. How many demoralizing losses can
- 30:57Speaker 3: any group of people, men, women try?
- 31:00Speaker 1: Locker rooms are weird, man?
- 31:01Speaker 3: Yes? How many can they take and keep getting up
- 31:04Speaker 3: from it? Like, ultimately, do you think, as we record
- 31:07Speaker 3: this right now, that the Chiefs care about losing against
- 31:09Speaker 3: the Bills last week?
- 31:11Speaker 1: I think they're so well built in the locker room,
- 31:12Speaker 1: they're like, that was probably the best thing that could
- 31:14Speaker 1: have happened to us. That's what I think they think.
- 31:16Speaker 3: Or you know what I said to my friend, I go, hey,
- 31:17Speaker 3: if anybody gives you a crap about the Chiefs losing, say, yeah,
- 31:22Speaker 3: we did lose. We tend to not lose the last
- 31:24Speaker 3: game of the season, though, that is the mentality, right,
- 31:30Speaker 3: And so I think, like you saw what happened after
- 31:33Speaker 3: the Commander's loss. I mean, the Bears, it looked like
- 31:36Speaker 3: they didn't even want to play and I hate getting
- 31:38Speaker 3: into that meat head level of like psyche of they've.
- 31:41Speaker 2: Given up or are you trying?
- 31:43Speaker 1: Stuff.
- 31:44Speaker 3: I hate that stuff because you and I both know
- 31:46Speaker 3: that if we took any one of our cousins or
- 31:49Speaker 3: siblings and put us in a basement in the Midwest
- 31:51Speaker 3: playing ping pong with a beer in our hand, that
- 31:54Speaker 3: there doesn't need to be anyone there for us to
- 31:56Speaker 3: care that we win. So now let's take somebody who's
- 31:58Speaker 3: achieved the level of professional sports and do not care
- 32:01Speaker 3: if you win on any level of any play ever,
- 32:04Speaker 3: you would have to be such a like diamond level
- 32:07Speaker 3: Ricky Williams type person to so I never go into
- 32:12Speaker 3: the like they don't care. But I think that you
- 32:14Speaker 3: can only have as a human panche so many tomorl
- 32:16Speaker 3: Anxing losses before you just can't get up for the game.
- 32:20Speaker 3: And you might be able to get up for in
- 32:21Speaker 3: the first quarter, but getting up for in the fourth quarter,
- 32:23Speaker 3: even in a vacuum of just that game, can be hard.
- 32:26Speaker 2: So I think the Vikings.
- 32:28Speaker 3: Deserve to win based on where people are seasons are going.
- 32:33Speaker 3: I won't be unhappy for them if they do win,
- 32:36Speaker 3: but yeah, you know, once kickoff starts I'm like, just
- 32:39Speaker 3: be a good team today.
- 32:41Speaker 1: Just be a real football team.
- 32:43Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 32:43Speaker 1: Today, today, you're living in a very different experience than
- 32:47Speaker 1: us because we at this I can just feel this
- 32:50Speaker 1: state going. Just be real. Please, let it be real.
- 32:54Speaker 1: Let it be real. The last question I have for you,
- 32:58Speaker 1: and it's not a good question to end on because,
- 33:00Speaker 1: as it turns out, Daniel, I'm not sure I'm great
- 33:01Speaker 1: at my job.
- 33:02Speaker 2: But it is.
- 33:06Speaker 1: It is the thing that I am most curious about
- 33:10Speaker 1: because you've talked so much about the like the organization
- 33:13Speaker 1: and how it's built and the mentality.
- 33:15Speaker 3: I mean, dude, can I cut you off really quick?
- 33:16Speaker 3: Just because I almost forgot to say this? As you
- 33:19Speaker 3: go on, Let's keep in mind when you say organization
- 33:22Speaker 3: that this was the lamest, most boring season of hard
- 33:25Speaker 3: knocks that has ever existed across any moment of any time.
- 33:30Speaker 3: Did you realize that they never cussed? Did you realize
- 33:33Speaker 3: that because there was a mandate from the Bears, from
- 33:36Speaker 3: Virginia McCaskey, God bless her, that there should be no cussing. Now,
- 33:40Speaker 3: you tell me when you're showcasing a football team and
- 33:43Speaker 3: women athletically, men athletically co d athletically that you're intense
- 33:49Speaker 3: and serious about something, but you don't coust So how
- 33:51Speaker 3: many real moments, how many real conversations are we actually campturing?
- 33:54Speaker 3: And how much did that affect meetings? Hey, guys, whatever
- 33:59Speaker 3: you want to say here call out, you can't because
- 34:01Speaker 3: we can't cost and there's cameras like that's the organization
- 34:05Speaker 3: that isn't we're here to win, that's here. We're here
- 34:08Speaker 3: to do it the way we think is right. And
- 34:10Speaker 3: for all but one season in the mid eighties and
- 34:13Speaker 3: a couple of divisional championships and a conference championship here
- 34:18Speaker 3: and there, they don't do it right.
- 34:19Speaker 2: They just don't.
- 34:20Speaker 1: We're here to make sure nobody dances in this town.
- 34:24Speaker 2: So exactly, No.
- 34:26Speaker 1: I think fan bases psychologies, I don't know if that's
- 34:29Speaker 1: a plural or not, but I think they're really interesting.
- 34:32Speaker 1: And the Bears have a unique one that kind of
- 34:38Speaker 1: mirrors the Pittsburgh Steelers, and that those are the two
- 34:44Speaker 1: pre eminent defensive like vibes. And granted, these are two
- 34:50Speaker 1: of the older, more iconic franchises, so they carried that
- 34:53Speaker 1: storied history with them. But do you think there's like
- 34:57Speaker 1: in Pittsburgh it's weird where I really think they believe
- 34:59Speaker 1: we'll like we're just a blue collar city and that
- 35:02Speaker 1: that flows out of our football team. What is it
- 35:06Speaker 1: about Chicago?
- 35:09Speaker 2: What it like?
- 35:10Speaker 1: This melding of a fan base and a personality and
- 35:14Speaker 1: an organization that it almost has seemed like for the
- 35:18Speaker 1: entirety of my fan watching life, we've been like, we
- 35:22Speaker 1: just need a good linebacker. Right linebacker is football? Like
- 35:27Speaker 1: when I go to when I go to Chicago for
- 35:30Speaker 1: stand up and I talk to anybody, I just expect
- 35:32Speaker 1: them to go linebackers football like, because I don't know
- 35:36Speaker 1: that it's like obviously you go butt kiss, you go,
- 35:39Speaker 1: you got Urlacker, you go, Khalil Mack, you have all
- 35:41Speaker 1: these guys. Yeah, on and on and on. But how
- 35:44Speaker 1: much of that is happenstance? It just it fascinates me
- 35:51Speaker 1: because it's pretty interesting and unique. And I don't think
- 35:53Speaker 1: it's an accident or a coincidence that it wound up
- 35:57Speaker 1: that way.
- 35:57Speaker 3: Yeah, I think that it's I think that every ownership
- 36:02Speaker 3: group has a strong suit and I think that they
- 36:06Speaker 3: impose that on to the people they hire to be
- 36:09Speaker 3: their decision makers, and then I think it's a real
- 36:13Speaker 3: thing for a city to set the tone. And I
- 36:16Speaker 3: think as comics, we can go into a city and
- 36:19Speaker 3: whether it's the person we meet at the hotel, our
- 36:21Speaker 3: uber driver, the place where you grab something to eat
- 36:24Speaker 3: and you can go, okay, this is sort of what
- 36:27Speaker 3: these people want.
- 36:29Speaker 1: This is exactly why I was asking ye. I think
- 36:31Speaker 1: you're exactly right.
- 36:32Speaker 3: And I think that that expectation extends itself to those
- 36:37Speaker 3: players in the same way that you show up right
- 36:42Speaker 3: and you walk down what I assume are numerous halls
- 36:45Speaker 3: with tons of former players, and if you're a running back,
- 36:49Speaker 3: you're being asked, can you even look at Gail Sayers
- 36:53Speaker 3: and Walter Payton? I mean, you know, just the guy
- 36:55Speaker 3: who the NFL named the Man of the Year trophy
- 36:58Speaker 3: after can you even get that? And so there's a
- 37:02Speaker 3: weight on there that maybe no, I'm being plenty on purpose,
- 37:06Speaker 3: I guess, makes you put more weight on the bar
- 37:08Speaker 3: in the gym because there's an expectation. And I think
- 37:11Speaker 3: that when you get to Chicago and you know that
- 37:15Speaker 3: the defense is here and what the defense has it been,
- 37:17Speaker 3: and you're that type of player, well you better bring it.
- 37:21Speaker 3: And I think if you're a quarterback on some level,
- 37:25Speaker 3: it's a blank slate. There's not a true standard there.
- 37:30Speaker 3: And I think the organization says, hey, we know, we
- 37:33Speaker 3: always get good linebackers, so if you hear somebody, you
- 37:36Speaker 3: bring them in. And then they're skittish about quarterbacks because
- 37:40Speaker 3: we've never really gotten that right. And is there a
- 37:43Speaker 3: one place on the dial that you can point to
- 37:46Speaker 3: and go that's where this is determined.
- 37:48Speaker 2: I don't think so. But is it? Is it an
- 37:50Speaker 2: amalgamation of things?
- 37:53Speaker 3: Yes, you know, I sit there and watch a Bears
- 37:57Speaker 3: game and I'm like, all right, if we just get
- 37:59Speaker 3: a turn over here, because I feel in some ways
- 38:04Speaker 3: often games more comforted when the defense is on the
- 38:08Speaker 3: field and we're on the right, on the correct.
- 38:09Speaker 2: Side of the fifty.
- 38:11Speaker 3: Then I do the offense being on the field and
- 38:14Speaker 3: only to the forty two yard line of the other
- 38:17Speaker 3: you know, And then you're watch it on the team
- 38:19Speaker 3: and you're to see like first down, first down. For
- 38:21Speaker 3: some you're like, how do they make this look so easy?
- 38:25Speaker 3: So I really think it's culture. I think it's culture
- 38:27Speaker 3: in every sense. If you if you're a quarterback and
- 38:30Speaker 3: you are walking through Midway Airport, I mean, let's be honest,
- 38:32Speaker 3: you're probably flying into O hair.
- 38:34Speaker 1: But I think I think they're going O hair.
- 38:36Speaker 3: Yeah, you're walking through O'Hair and you see somebody and
- 38:39Speaker 3: they recognize you and you're a quarterback, the attitude is like,
- 38:43Speaker 3: we need you, please, please do this for us, please.
- 38:46Speaker 2: Right.
- 38:47Speaker 3: And if you're a linebacker and you're a rookie or
- 38:49Speaker 3: you're a Khalil Mac and somebody comes in and they go,
- 38:52Speaker 3: you know what you're supposed to do here?
- 38:53Speaker 1: Right, that's yeah.
- 38:55Speaker 3: That is happening on micro levels all the time, in
- 38:59Speaker 3: both both ways.
- 39:01Speaker 2: Does it guarantee anything? No?
- 39:03Speaker 3: Is it a factor if you ask my meathead Rochelle Illinois,
- 39:07Speaker 3: our THHS graduate brain, Yes, it is a factor. And
- 39:11Speaker 3: I think you see those things continue. I mean you
- 39:14Speaker 3: look at it. People go oh every time Peyton Manning
- 39:18Speaker 3: got another tight end.
- 39:19Speaker 2: They were great.
- 39:19Speaker 3: Well, yeah, because if you're gonna come in after Dallas Clark,
- 39:23Speaker 3: you better hit your route. It is uncomfortable for you
- 39:27Speaker 3: not to. So the sad thing is is Bears have
- 39:31Speaker 3: an expect Bears and Bears fans have an expectation of
- 39:34Speaker 3: defensive play and they have a hope for quarterback play.
- 39:39Speaker 1: Well, I want to thank you Daniel for on behalf
- 39:42Speaker 1: of everybody who's listening for essentially, you know, making us
- 39:47Speaker 1: feel like this is gonna go well for us, only
- 39:51Speaker 1: to put us in a position that we've spent a
- 39:53Speaker 1: lot of our lives in. Uh, you know, just probably
- 39:57Speaker 1: seventeen thirteen with two and a half minute it's to play,
- 40:00Speaker 1: and Caleb Williams has the ball and we're all just
- 40:03Speaker 1: furious and nervous. I'm gonna make you do this. You're
- 40:08Speaker 1: not gonna like it. Give me a score prediction.
- 40:15Speaker 3: I gotta be a meathead and say twenty. Oh, that's
- 40:20Speaker 3: way too high for the Bears, seventeen fourteen Bears. And
- 40:26Speaker 3: I'm being wishful because I really think it'll probably be
- 40:32Speaker 3: ten to fourteen with the Bears having the ball and
- 40:35Speaker 3: two and a half minutes left.
- 40:37Speaker 1: So I was just saying, you just basically changed the
- 40:39Speaker 1: score a little bit. But you put my prediction, my
- 40:42Speaker 1: worry prediction to get together there.
- 40:45Speaker 2: Yeah, in your own way.
- 40:46Speaker 1: I'd like everybody just as a reminder when you're feeling
- 40:48Speaker 1: anything on Sunday, It's like that scene in The water Boy. Yeah,
- 40:52Speaker 1: all of a sudden they look up and the guy
- 40:54Speaker 1: looks at Kathy Bates.
- 40:55Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 40:55Speaker 1: I think this is the second episode in a row
- 40:58Speaker 1: read I've done that dumb bit, but uh me mentioned
- 41:02Speaker 1: his Twitter everybody. So when it's ten fourteen and has
- 41:06Speaker 1: the ball and you're nervous, hop on a hop on
- 41:09Speaker 1: old X and find your way to Daniel Vancruz.
- 41:12Speaker 3: You know what, for any if the Bears end up
- 41:13Speaker 3: winning and they'll go you know it happened whatever, I'm like, well,
- 41:16Speaker 3: you guys could have done a lot more with this
- 41:18Speaker 3: win than the Bears are gonna, so I wouldn't have
- 41:19Speaker 3: been that mad about it. The one thing I really
- 41:21Speaker 3: feel bad about the Vikings for is that this seems
- 41:25Speaker 3: to be coming together with an upward trajectory, whether it's
- 41:28Speaker 3: Donald and McCarthy at the same time that the Lions
- 41:31Speaker 3: are the NFL's NFC darling, and it's like.
- 41:34Speaker 1: See, we'll see, baby. I've got a weird confidence and
- 41:36Speaker 1: I never have confidence.
- 41:37Speaker 3: I know.
- 41:38Speaker 2: That's what's great.
- 41:39Speaker 1: I never ever have confidence.
- 41:42Speaker 2: We'll see.
- 41:42Speaker 1: I think I think there is a chance. I think
- 41:47Speaker 1: the Lions might be the best team in football, all
- 41:49Speaker 1: of football.
- 41:49Speaker 2: Uh huh. I mean there was a college score last
- 41:52Speaker 2: weekend mm hmm.
- 41:54Speaker 1: But the NFL is a one week at a time
- 41:57Speaker 1: league sure, And by the way, I think the Lions
- 42:01Speaker 1: are the least likely to falter of anybody in the
- 42:05Speaker 1: NFC right when it comes to what I'm about to say.
- 42:08Speaker 1: It's not like other teams don't feel this, but I
- 42:12Speaker 1: truly think the Lions have to prove to me an
- 42:16Speaker 1: ability to execute sound decisions in multiple playoff games before
- 42:24Speaker 1: I walk into let's say you're in an NFC championship game,
- 42:27Speaker 1: whether it's the Packers, whether it's the Vikings, whether it's
- 42:29Speaker 1: the Niners, anybody else. Yeah, if they walk into an
- 42:33Speaker 1: NFC championship game, even in Detroit, in my brain, I'm going, yeah,
- 42:37Speaker 1: Detroit's the heavy favorite here. This makes a lot of
- 42:39Speaker 1: sense to try, but I can't ignore what I've seen
- 42:43Speaker 1: so many times in so many important moments, that is
- 42:45Speaker 1: just hanging out there. What does it look like in
- 42:49Speaker 1: the third quarter when it's fourth and four from their
- 42:51Speaker 1: own forty and they should probably punt it, but they
- 42:53Speaker 1: always go for it. And if they don't get that
- 42:56Speaker 1: like that, the disconnect between the line always do their
- 43:01Speaker 1: philosophy in Dan Campbell's belief structure versus what is the
- 43:06Speaker 1: actual situation where in it's kind of like the bill's
- 43:09Speaker 1: going forward on fourth and two. You go for that
- 43:12Speaker 1: no matter what as many times because it's Patrick mahomes right.
- 43:16Speaker 1: If you are looking at Daniel Jones over there, it's
- 43:19Speaker 1: a different conversation. And so that is the Lions have
- 43:23Speaker 1: to show me that and me saying this might result
- 43:27Speaker 1: in a forty point ass kicking in the playoffs, but
- 43:30Speaker 1: I would love a shot at being the team to
- 43:34Speaker 1: put them in that position.
- 43:36Speaker 2: Sure, yeah, I'm with you.
- 43:38Speaker 3: Let me ask you one last question so you can
- 43:40Speaker 3: remove your own baggage.
- 43:42Speaker 1: Oh difficult?
- 43:45Speaker 2: Thanksgiving Day? Bears, Lions?
- 43:48Speaker 3: How badly do you think the Lions are going to
- 43:49Speaker 3: beat the Bears? Twenty points?
- 43:51Speaker 2: Now? Twenty five points?
- 43:53Speaker 1: Who do the Lions have this week?
- 43:55Speaker 2: Do we know? Do you really think it matters?
- 43:58Speaker 1: Listen to me, I do you're nuts?
- 44:01Speaker 2: No?
- 44:01Speaker 1: No, no, no, hear me, hear me out. I don't think
- 44:03Speaker 1: that has anything to do with Chicago. Agree. I think
- 44:05Speaker 1: there are two things that we are due for. We
- 44:07Speaker 1: are due for, although Golf did have the five interception
- 44:11Speaker 1: game and they survived, but we are due for a
- 44:14Speaker 1: dud from Detroit.
- 44:15Speaker 2: Sure, I think we're due.
- 44:17Speaker 1: There's been flashes and there's there have been moments, but
- 44:19Speaker 1: I think there's going to be a Caleb Williams game
- 44:22Speaker 1: because these people like Viking fans, other fans who are
- 44:25Speaker 1: cracking on him. You're out of your mind, I agree,
- 44:28Speaker 1: But you are out of your mind if you don't
- 44:30Speaker 1: see the special things here.
- 44:32Speaker 2: What he looks like.
- 44:32Speaker 3: He looks like a good rookie. I'm pretty sure Peyton
- 44:36Speaker 3: Manning is rookie here through twenty nine interceptions.
- 44:38Speaker 2: M h.
- 44:39Speaker 3: And you want to compare him to uh Jaden Daniels
- 44:44Speaker 3: and I'm like, don't that guy is having an insane year.
- 44:47Speaker 3: He is not the mean also way older.
- 44:50Speaker 2: Yes, I don't see that to take anything away from Jaden.
- 44:52Speaker 1: I know it's amazing.
- 44:53Speaker 2: Do not pile on to kle the guy is a
- 44:56Speaker 2: rookie people.
- 44:57Speaker 3: I love what people are like, well, you know, we're
- 44:59Speaker 3: a couple of weeks or they're like, we're halfway through
- 45:00Speaker 3: the season here, and I go, you mean eight games
- 45:04Speaker 3: into someone's career, Like, come on, guys, I'm not saying
- 45:09Speaker 3: he's great, but pump the brakes here. Everybody in our
- 45:15Speaker 3: you know, instant scratcher gratification life.
- 45:17Speaker 2: Don't be wrong.
- 45:17Speaker 3: I love scratchers more than scratch more than some people
- 45:20Speaker 3: I'm related to. I love a good scratcher, but I'm
- 45:23Speaker 3: just like, let's pull it back. I just don't I
- 45:25Speaker 3: think that you can agree that without seeing the line. Yet,
- 45:29Speaker 3: it's probably eight and a half for the Lions at
- 45:32Speaker 3: home on Thanksgiving, and you would wouldn't feel crazy betting it.
- 45:35Speaker 1: Come on, I hear, I'm not. I wouldn't get in
- 45:38Speaker 1: within a million miles of choosing the Bears to win
- 45:41Speaker 1: this football that football game. And I look forward to
- 45:43Speaker 1: your text on Thanksgiving. At some point Caleb Williams is
- 45:47Speaker 1: going to have a special game thank you, and at
- 45:51Speaker 1: some point the Lions are going to put a dot
- 45:53Speaker 1: on the field. And if those moments cross, because as
- 45:58Speaker 1: you said, the Bears rise up for and the Lions have.
- 46:02Speaker 2: The Colts this week.
- 46:02Speaker 1: Now, maybe the Colts beat them, maybe something weird there happens.
- 46:05Speaker 1: But I don't know. I just think there's a space there.
- 46:10Speaker 1: There's just a space there where something weird could happen.
- 46:13Speaker 1: Very small percentage, But I'm not gonna sit here and
- 46:15Speaker 1: say that the Bears are gonna lose by twenty five.
- 46:18Speaker 2: Okay, it's also Thanksgiving, It's.
- 46:20Speaker 1: Also thanksgiving Daniel van Kirk. Ladies and gentlemen, thanks for
- 46:24Speaker 1: having me buddy, you're the best. Thank you everybody for
- 46:26Speaker 1: listening to our podcast feed while you're here. Make sure
- 46:29Speaker 1: you subscribe, you write a review, it really helps us.
- 46:33Speaker 1: Also huge shout out to ticket Master, the official ticket
- 46:35Speaker 1: marketplace of the Minnesota Vikings, for helping make this show happen.
- 46:40Speaker 1: We'll see you all again next week.
