- 0:39SPEAKER_03: Welcome in everybody to the Talk and Tech Podcast, powered by Guns Up Nation, part of the Guns Up Nation Podcast Network.
- 0:46SPEAKER_03: I'm your host, Steven Rodriguez, my co-host Tristan McGonagall.
- 0:49SPEAKER_03: And Tristan, I wish college football was more interesting.
- 0:52SPEAKER_03: We clearly have nothing to talk about today.
- 0:54SPEAKER_03: Uh, what are we gonna do?
- 0:56SPEAKER_06: It's definitely the offseason, man.
- 0:57SPEAKER_06: We're we're trying to find something to bring up as college sports are on hiatus as it goes between the semesters here.
- 1:04SPEAKER_06: So I'm not quite sure.
- 1:05SPEAKER_06: Uh you guys, how is how's your day going?
- 1:07SPEAKER_06: How about that?
- 1:08SPEAKER_06: We want to talk about each other's days.
- 1:09SPEAKER_03: No, I don't want to talk about our our days because uh because we got some stuff actually to talk about.
- 1:17SPEAKER_03: Realignment is back and uh realignment season, realignment season is back, and I hate it, and I can't keep my eyes off of it, and it's the worst and the best at the same time, and I don't understand what's going on, but we're gonna talk it out here on today's episode uh to try to get you know something uh to the people and and kind of understand this whole thing, um, because it's all it's a lot of mess going on right now.
- 1:43SPEAKER_06: I mean, it's it's just this is very intriguing right now because it could very clearly affect Texas Tech.
- 1:48SPEAKER_06: You know, that's that's why our eyes are drilled on it.
- 1:51SPEAKER_06: Right now we're in this weird period in in college sports, particularly in college football, where a lot of people are in survival mode, a lot of programs are in absolute survival mode rather than just uh how can we maximize our potential and all that.
- 2:05SPEAKER_06: Now, now now we're just kind of in how are we going to make it to tomorrow when matter?
- 2:09SPEAKER_06: So it's just it's it's a really interesting uh dynamic to watch unfold in front of us.
- 2:14SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no doubt.
- 2:15SPEAKER_03: So let's kind of take through the whole timeline of things.
- 2:19SPEAKER_03: Um, last Thursday, we get the bomb, the news drop, USC and UCLA leaving for the Big Ten, uh, which of course leaves the Pac-12 vulnerable.
- 2:31SPEAKER_03: It leaves the Big 12 in a state of, hey, we kind of need to be on the offensive here.
- 2:38SPEAKER_03: Uh, we can't really just sit by and do nothing.
- 2:41SPEAKER_03: Um, the SEC hasn't really done much through this whole process.
- 2:45SPEAKER_03: But um, you know, after that, it was a quiet few days.
- 2:49SPEAKER_03: There were certain rumors that uh the Big 12 was meeting with four Pac-12 teams during this whole thing.
- 2:56SPEAKER_03: Uh, you know, not really reliable sources were coming out, but they were stating hey, Utah, Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado could potentially be talking to the Big 12 about joining the Big 12.
- 3:10SPEAKER_03: Um, and then today, which is Tuesday, uh, Dennis Dodd of CBS Sports comes out and puts out an article saying, yes, really everything is on the table here.
- 3:22unknown: Yeah.
- 3:22SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, these four schools are indeed being talked about by the Big 12 uh to potentially add, along with Oregon and Washington.
- 3:31SPEAKER_03: Um, but a lot of other things are also being discussed.
- 3:35SPEAKER_03: A merger between the Pac-12 and the Big 12 is being discussed.
- 3:39SPEAKER_03: Uh, the Pac-12 discussing that they would uh, you know, immediately begin their television negotiations to try to stay together as a conference.
- 3:50SPEAKER_03: They're talking about something with the ACC now, so it's a whole lot of information that is being dropped on all of us right now.
- 3:58SPEAKER_03: Tristan, what was kind of your first reaction to uh UCLA and USC bolting for the Big Ten?
- 4:05SPEAKER_06: Well, I mean, it's just it just kind of confirmed what was building up over the past year with OU and UT going to the SEC, is that we're entering the era of super conferences.
- 4:16SPEAKER_06: I think you know, a lot of people are asking if we're heading there.
- 4:18SPEAKER_06: I would argue we're already there.
- 4:20SPEAKER_06: I think 16 teams in one conference is enormous.
- 4:23SPEAKER_06: So, and and and especially with the power in the media that these conferences are about to hold.
- 4:28SPEAKER_06: So it just confirmed to everyone in the country that there's going to be two power to if you can even use the word power anymore.
- 4:34SPEAKER_06: Can we say like hyper or monster conferences?
- 4:37SPEAKER_06: And then now we're gonna have everyone else just vying for a seat at the table, you know, vying for a way to matter.
- 4:46SPEAKER_06: And I think the Big 12 is obviously it's hard to say you're upset about UCLA and USC damaging the Pac-12 because that's your biggest competition.
- 4:58SPEAKER_06: You know, it's just it's kind of a race of who's gonna get out of this in the best shape between us two, and you can include the ACC in that as well.
- 5:06SPEAKER_06: So it's it's sad for the sport, but as a Big 12 fan, it gives you some hope that Texas, Texas Tech and our colleagues could hedge their position in the in the college sporting world.
- 5:17SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no, it's almost like you're you're kind of happy as a Texas Tech and Big 12 fan that Texas and OU left before USC and UCLA did, you know, for because we were we had kind of a jump start on it.
- 5:31SPEAKER_03: Now, when you're talking about you know the TV rights deals, the Pac 12 does kind of have a jump on the Big 12 of that because the Pac 12 media rights end in 2024, Big 12 media rights end in 2025.
- 5:46SPEAKER_03: So the is that a jump?
- 5:48SPEAKER_06: You think that's a good thing for the Pac 12 versus the Big 12?
- 5:51SPEAKER_03: I think so, because they can immediately, and as they've announced today, they can immediately start negotiations with that, which gives them kind of a jump start into looking at a real number of what these schools could potentially make.
- 6:03SPEAKER_03: Because the reason any of these schools are doing any of this is because of money, and the TV contract is the biggest moneymaker here in this whole system.
- 6:11SPEAKER_03: So um I think they do kind of have a jump because Fox can basically or or ESPN or whoever they're negotiating with, TNT, whoever, can tell them, hey, this is the number we're gonna give you.
- 6:23SPEAKER_03: If you can add a couple more teams, we'll give you this number, or maybe if you could potentially poach a couple Big 12 teams, this is the number we're gonna give you.
- 6:31SPEAKER_03: And so the Big 12 doesn't quite have that power yet, in my opinion.
- 6:34SPEAKER_03: But um, I think that's the biggest driving force of all this is the TV negotiations and and you know what these schools could potentially make in the realm of college sports, which if you're in the SEC or Big Ten, you're in a pretty good spot right now.
- 6:47SPEAKER_03: Um, but uh you know, other than that, it's kind of unknown.
- 6:51SPEAKER_06: So you're you're saying it's kind of like a bird in the hand situation with the Pac-12 being open first for business, but you know what they say, the bird in the hand's worth more than two in the bush or whatever that strange saying goes.
- 7:02SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I mean, a little bit.
- 7:04SPEAKER_03: I think the them having a jump start on the TV rights deal is is a major bump.
- 7:08SPEAKER_03: Um, now I think the Big 12 is more set because of who we just added.
- 7:14SPEAKER_03: We're a stronger conference right now.
- 7:16SPEAKER_03: We have 12 teams or are going to have, you know, that what 14 teams here in the next couple of years, 12 teams by 2025.
- 7:24SPEAKER_03: Uh, the Pac-12 has 10 teams.
- 7:28SPEAKER_03: And now I guess you could just start comparing Big 12 to Pac-12, you know, in terms of individual schools.
- 7:37SPEAKER_03: Oregon and Washington are probably the two biggest brands when you're talking about, you know, who's in the Big 12 and who's in the Pac-12 right now.
- 7:45SPEAKER_03: But outside of that, you know, the Big 12 probably has the next six or so, right, you know, biggest brands.
- 7:51SPEAKER_03: So it's kind of how you look at it situation.
- 7:53SPEAKER_03: And I'm not sure how these TV executives are going to be looking at that.
- 7:57SPEAKER_06: Yeah, and I I I I think I I see where you're coming from with the Pac 12 being a positive in being able to negotiate their their uh television deal.
- 8:06SPEAKER_06: But at the same time, I think to me that's that's like a panic button that they they've just hit because they're coming to the table in a very weakened state.
- 8:13SPEAKER_06: Because and what the the number they will receive is what they are in this weakened state.
- 8:19SPEAKER_06: So you don't think the teams that are currently in the pack, this new Pac 10, that will look at this bill they're about to receive and it be worth less than whatever USD and UCLA were there, like they're gonna take a pay cut rather than a pay raise.
- 8:35SPEAKER_06: And obviously, no school wants that there.
- 8:36SPEAKER_06: You don't think that's more of a a canary in the coal mine saying, all right, this is what it looks like time to get out now, kind of thing.
- 8:43SPEAKER_06: Uh, so that's that's why the Big 12 discussions are probably a little more serious than anyone would have thought before, you know, because it because they could be like, okay, so you know, they'll obviously be talking to their firms.
- 8:54SPEAKER_06: They could say, What's the new Big 12 projecting to do?
- 8:56SPEAKER_06: Now add us to the mix, and that firm will be able to tell them that it's worth this much.
- 9:00SPEAKER_06: And if it's worth more, then they'll be like, Well, we got to make the obvious decision here and move over.
- 9:06SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I think there's still a lot of dominoes to fall in this situation.
- 9:09SPEAKER_03: We don't know what Oregon and Washington are gonna do.
- 9:12SPEAKER_03: You know, we don't know if the Big Ten is even looking in their direction.
- 9:17SPEAKER_03: I know their first priority right now is probably Notre Dame, uh, but you know, they could potentially add a few teams from the Pac-12 as well on top of USC and UCLA.
- 9:28SPEAKER_03: Um, the Big 12 has been rumored to be looking at the Arizona Schools, Colorado, and um Utah to add to their arsenal.
- 9:37SPEAKER_03: So there's just so many different dominoes right now.
- 9:41SPEAKER_03: And if the Pac 12 were to stick together like the Big 12 just did and add some schools to their program uh or to their conference, you know, what does that look like?
- 9:54SPEAKER_03: Does it what is what is a Big 12 as it is as it sits right now with the 12 teams with you know the new additions of Houston, uh UCF, Cincinnati, and BYU.
- 10:06SPEAKER_03: How does that compare to a Pac-12 with potentially 12 teams if they add maybe a Boise state and a San Diego state?
- 10:13SPEAKER_06: Yeah, that's a good question.
- 10:15SPEAKER_06: You know, I think we can we can start this conversation by saying we can already look at a big positive of this, is that the Big 12 is officially safe from the Pac 12, in my opinion.
- 10:25SPEAKER_06: I don't think we have to worry about being poached from the West anymore.
- 10:29SPEAKER_06: And I don't, I really don't think we have to worry about being poached from anyone else either.
- 10:33SPEAKER_06: I think we're in a very stable position, and the ACC is too complicated in a situation right now to worry about them right now.
- 10:40SPEAKER_06: And I really don't think the SC SEC or the Big Ten is gonna come in and get anybody from the Big 12.
- 10:44SPEAKER_06: I just don't think that's good, that's gonna happen in this moment.
- 10:47SPEAKER_06: I think we're gonna go through a phase of these two huge conferences before we come to another cycle of just conglomerating everybody.
- 10:54SPEAKER_06: So I don't think we have to worry about that.
- 10:55SPEAKER_06: So I think we could talk start talk talking about how great it is that Tech Tech's gonna be in a in a good conference, you know, and we are we are here to stay and we're not going to go to the Pac 12.
- 11:06SPEAKER_06: We'll thankfully only be looking at a stronger Big 12 if more come over from the Pac 12.
- 11:11SPEAKER_06: But I think that's a good uh good good question because who does the Pac 12 add?
- 11:15SPEAKER_06: That's that's even close to replacing the value that they're losing.
- 11:20SPEAKER_06: And I know everyone threw that at the Big 12, but the Big 12 filled in with four teams and four of the best G5 teams.
- 11:27SPEAKER_06: BYU isn't really even a G5 team, it's more of a P5 team.
- 11:30SPEAKER_06: So, what are even their options at that point that could even come close to doing a band-aid?
- 11:36SPEAKER_06: To me, I think it's more likely that they'll be the old Big 12.
- 11:39SPEAKER_06: I think they'll be the Pac-12 with 10 teams if that's what turns out happening.
- 11:44SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and I I mean, I think it all depends on the decision from these four schools that potentially the Big 12 are looking at.
- 11:51SPEAKER_03: Because right now, say, I I don't know, all this stuff happens so quickly.
- 11:56SPEAKER_03: Say tomorrow that the Arizona Schools, Colorado and Utah decide to jump to the Big 12 and make it a 16-team conference.
- 12:04SPEAKER_03: Yes, you're clearly number three, but you're you're surviving for sure.
- 12:08SPEAKER_03: You know, you're in pretty good shape, yeah, and you're in pretty decent shape.
- 12:11SPEAKER_03: You're not a G you're not a G5.
- 12:13SPEAKER_03: No, no, no, no.
- 12:14SPEAKER_03: But then that kind of pushes Oregon and Washington to make a decision here pretty quickly and say, hey, you know, do we pretty much beg to get into the Big Ten or do we just go to the Big 12 as well, make it an 18 team conference, and then you're really cooking as the Big 12.
- 12:29SPEAKER_06: Yeah, absolutely.
- 12:31SPEAKER_03: So I don't know, man.
- 12:33SPEAKER_03: There's just so many different factors in this whole deal, and it really depends on the moves that these athletic directors and and presidents of these schools decide to make.
- 12:43SPEAKER_03: Um, and and if I'm Utah, if I'm Arizona, I'm thinking, yeah, you know, we're not gonna get invited to the Big Ten or we're not gonna get invited to the SEC.
- 12:54SPEAKER_03: Why don't we just survive here instead of playing a game of risk and trying to, you know, patch together this Pac 12 conference and then uh, you know, and adding like Boise State and San Diego State, to me, that conference clearly is worse than the new Big 12.
- 13:13SPEAKER_03: And I don't know if I'm biased or what, but um I I I feel like the media rights contract would be higher in the Big 12 um than what you're making in the Pac-12, because according to that CBS article, it looks like the Pac-12 would be uh looking at about a$30 million um deal with their without USC and UCLA.
- 13:35SPEAKER_03: So I think if you jump on board to the Big 12, you bump that number up pretty, I mean, you know, at least 10 million more, you know, potentially 15, 20 million, depending on how you negotiate these things.
- 13:48SPEAKER_03: But um, you know, I we've seen from I think it was Arizona State and Colorado have both come out with statements.
- 13:56SPEAKER_03: Their athletic directors have come out and said, you know, we're standing by our conference sticking together and and you know, you know, doing what's best for us and the Pac-12.
- 14:08SPEAKER_03: And you know, you have to put out a statement like that.
- 14:10SPEAKER_03: Texas Tech put out a statement like that, and we ended up working it out, you know, with the Big 12.
- 14:14SPEAKER_03: But I think, you know, it's it's just so confusing and it's so weird right now on what these middle tier, you know, your Texas Techs, your Arizona's, all that your Oklahoma states, it's just so confusing on what we're supposed to do with all this right now.
- 14:30SPEAKER_06: Yeah, I mean, you are looking at the uh the more optimistic numbers that are coming out for the Big 12, a lot of people are expecting us to make about the same we are now with this new uh conference we're heading into because I I think everyone's just very impressed with the way the Big 12 responded to UTNOU bailing the solidarity that ended up happening within the conference.
- 14:47SPEAKER_06: And I think a part of that solidarity was galvanized by being rejected by every single conference because you know we called everybody, you know, the Big Ten SEC.
- 14:54SPEAKER_06: And now funny enough, the Pac-12 said no thanks, no thanks.
- 14:57SPEAKER_06: And we're like, fine, I guess we'll just have to do it, make do.
- 15:00SPEAKER_06: And it ended up being pretty dang good.
- 15:02SPEAKER_06: We actually came out of it in pretty good shape.
- 15:03SPEAKER_06: I just don't think the Pac 12 has the opportunity to do that because they're behind.
- 15:08SPEAKER_06: We took the best brands that could, and out west, the G5s just aren't as strong.
- 15:13SPEAKER_06: And it's in the thing about the pack is it's a bit of a different beast.
- 15:16SPEAKER_06: It's kind of like the Big Ten, is they're pretty dang snooty.
- 15:18SPEAKER_06: And I stand, I don't think Stamford just says, You're right, we got to go to survival mode.
- 15:23SPEAKER_06: Let's just add Boise State and San Diego State.
- 15:25SPEAKER_06: I really don't think that's gonna happen because they are very up their own behinds about academics and stuff, whenever obviously that's not where sports are going, you know.
- 15:34SPEAKER_06: I I know people will say, well, USC and UCLA are great schools, and they're going to the Big Ten, so the Big Ten's keeping that.
- 15:39SPEAKER_06: I don't think that has anything to do with it.
- 15:41SPEAKER_06: I mean, I just I just think that they got the two premier LA Pac-12 schools.
- 15:45SPEAKER_06: I think the academics are just kind of a bonus to go with that.
- 15:48SPEAKER_06: So, but I I just don't see the Pac-12 playing that way, and I think that was a part of the reason why they didn't want to add an Oklahoma State and Texas Tech to the Pac-12 Lasco round because they're like, oh no, we're too good for those, you know, party state schools, as they would probably call us, you know.
- 16:03SPEAKER_06: So I just I think the Pac-12 has like a lot of work in front of them to even patch it back together.
- 16:09SPEAKER_06: I think that plays into in uh a Tex Tech's benefit.
- 16:11SPEAKER_06: That the Pac 12, the Big 12 becomes really attractive to the remaining Pac 12 members.
- 16:16SPEAKER_06: I just think it's we're kind of looking at a weird circle between six schools because you know, I bet the four mountain schools are looking to see what Oregon and Washington are doing, but all Washington and Oregon are like, well, I mean, if the the the four go forward schools down there are leaving, what are we gonna do?
- 16:29SPEAKER_06: Are we gonna go too?
- 16:30SPEAKER_06: So it's kind of like a weird circle.
- 16:32SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I I I want to ask you if so, this is a Texas Tech podcast, so we're gonna talk from a Texas Tech perspective.
- 16:40SPEAKER_03: If you're Lawrence Skuvenek and Kirby Hokutt, and you're sitting in a meeting right now with uh George Kleevkoff of the Pac-12, and he's saying, Hey, we're gonna try to get you in Oklahoma State to jump to the Pac-12, where now you have Oregon, Washington, they're committed to stay.
- 17:02SPEAKER_03: Texas Tech, Oklahoma State potentially coming in, keeping the Arizona schools, Utah, Colorado.
- 17:08SPEAKER_03: Uh what do you do if you're Texas Tech?
- 17:10SPEAKER_03: Do you say no?
- 17:11SPEAKER_03: I think we're good here in the Big 12, or do you say, or you know, potentially with Oregon and Washington being probably the two biggest brands out of the bunch of the two conferences, you know, do you think and and still being a competitive, you know, I think Texas Tech could compete in that conference.
- 17:28SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, what do you think Kirby or or Lawrence Scubenek would do in that situation?
- 17:33SPEAKER_06: Yeah, that's a very that's a very difficult situation.
- 17:37SPEAKER_06: And obviously, if you're president Scubenek as well, is you know, you got the opportunity to have your university affiliated with Stanford and California, you know, uh obviously two elite institutions academically, um, which obviously is attractive as well.
- 17:50SPEAKER_06: Uh that's it's it's a really tough question.
- 17:53SPEAKER_06: And uh, but at this moment, I do think that Kirby Hokutt, Lauren Skuvenek are more dedicated and confident in what they can make the Big 12 than the Pac-12.
- 18:04SPEAKER_06: Because I think the biggest problem with jumping over to the Pac-12 is you're just waiting.
- 18:09SPEAKER_06: You're just waiting on Oregon and Washington to leave rather than trying to build something because it's always gonna be how do I get out of this with Oregon and Washington more so than we're just the Pac 12 is going on business as usual.
- 18:22SPEAKER_06: Because you know, you just you just know a brand like Oregon and Phil Knight is not gonna settle for just hanging around, you know.
- 18:30SPEAKER_06: I I I really don't see that happening because they they they want themselves to be like in Alabama and Ohio State, and I just don't think that's that opportunity would be there in the Pac 12 because even if you bring over the best Big 12 schools, you're still not gonna reach even the same stratosphere as the Big Ten and SEC when it comes to the money deal.
- 18:48SPEAKER_06: I mean, you might get like 75% at best, which would be great, don't get me wrong, but you're still missing out on a ton of cash and respect.
- 18:57SPEAKER_03: Well, and then you're at the point where if Oregon and Washington did decide to bolt after you decided to join the Pac-12, then you're kind of screwed.
- 19:03SPEAKER_03: That's why I missed, yeah.
- 19:04SPEAKER_03: Or you're waiting on what they're doing, or you're just hoping to God that the SEC decides to say, hey, you know, throw you a bone and say, Come on in.
- 19:12SPEAKER_03: But yeah, uh, I don't know if that happens.
- 19:14SPEAKER_03: We kind of talked about that prepod, uh, you know, what the SEC's next moves potentially are, what the Big Ten's next moves potentially are.
- 19:22SPEAKER_06: Um well, answer your own question, you know.
- 19:25SPEAKER_06: What do you think?
- 19:26SPEAKER_03: I yeah, the the Oregon Washington decision is intimidating.
- 19:30SPEAKER_03: If if I'm if they're 100% in on keeping the Pac 12 alive, I think it would be a pretty decent decision to go over there.
- 19:38SPEAKER_03: Um, but I also like the conference that we're at right now, and I think the best situation right now is if the Big 12 could potentially poach four to six schools from the Pac-12, completely destroy the Pac-12, what it is, and just go as the third best, you know, conference in in the country right now.
- 19:56SPEAKER_06: Uh stability might be the most important thing now, you know.
- 19:59SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I think that's really what you're looking for as a Texas tacker in Oklahoma State, you know, unless somehow the SEC comes call and obviously you take that uh first and foremost.
- 20:10SPEAKER_03: But um, you know, if you want to keep, and it seems like Texas Tech wants to keep the Big 12 alive, uh, we've been a huge part of kind of building this conference back up from after you know UTNOU left.
- 20:24SPEAKER_03: Um, I think kind of a weird factor here is what the ACC is gonna do because the ACC right now is locked into their media deal.
- 20:33SPEAKER_03: It could not have come at worse timing for those schools, uh, already signing a really shitty media deal uh with their current network, but they're now locked in till 2036.
- 20:46SPEAKER_03: Um and you know, I don't really see a situation where if the SEC wants Clemson or Florida State or Miami or something, they can't just kind of buy that out because that's a lot of years you got locked in there.
- 21:00SPEAKER_03: Uh, and I don't know all the logistics with it, but I'm sure it's more of a messy situation than a Pac-12 school that is done in 2024 or a Big 12 school that's done in 2025 versus you know 2036.
- 21:13SPEAKER_03: But that's gonna be kind of a wild card to watch, I think, is what the ACC, what happens with that if they just kind of stick there, you know, because they're they're kind of stuck with their meteorites deal, or if some conferences end up dopoaching a North Carolina or uh, you know, or uh Clemson or Florida State.
- 21:30SPEAKER_06: I think I think with the the problem with the ACC is I I really think the ACC is an on-player right now.
- 21:35SPEAKER_06: I think the ACC, unfortunately, with their with their meteorites deal, has kind of sealed them.
- 21:41SPEAKER_06: I think they've sealed it.
- 21:42SPEAKER_06: I mean, maybe it turns out being better in the end for them, but I think it's kind of a sealed of fate because I think you'll get programs like proud programs like Clemson and Florida State and North Carolina getting very frustrated with being left behind, you know, being stuck making 2015 money.
- 22:00SPEAKER_06: When everyone else is making 2020s money, you know, and and just and the level of competition obviously isn't equal to the Big Ten or the SEC in the media respect, won't even be able to be close either.
- 22:11SPEAKER_06: So I I think they're gonna be laury lawyering the crap out of the ACC.
- 22:16SPEAKER_06: And I think the ACC will uh probably need a a fate that's kind of similar to like a big east, you know, and maybe they just kind of salvage a really great basketball conference, but football is gonna be kind of weak from that point forward because I just don't see I don't see why you know a Big 12 team would suddenly become interested in in the ACC, especially if we can bolster it with uh the Pac-12 teams.
- 22:39SPEAKER_06: So I really think that the after the top two conferences, you're gonna have one third one that's gonna be filling a role that may were may only one, maybe only one can exist, you know.
- 22:51SPEAKER_06: So I just I think the ACC is in a really bad spot.
- 22:54SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and and I think what we what we're getting here with the new Big 12, potentially if we add these four to six teams, is clearly the best basketball conference, which is for sure significant.
- 23:07SPEAKER_03: Uh it's not the major moneymaker, we all know football is that, but you know, you're also not in a position where financially you're you don't have bad football with this new Big 12.
- 23:19SPEAKER_03: You know, you're to pretty good football.
- 23:22SPEAKER_03: Yeah, you're not gonna have what the SEC has in Alabama, LSU, you know, the brand that is Texas, you know, all that kind of stuff.
- 23:29SPEAKER_03: The Big Ten now is gonna add in USC and and all that to their Ohio State and Michigan.
- 23:36SPEAKER_03: You're not gonna meet those teams in terms of football revenue and what these schools ultimately do with that.
- 23:41SPEAKER_03: But what you are doing is having a serviceable football conference with a killer basketball conference.
- 23:49SPEAKER_03: And that's something that I don't necessarily think the ACC can do here, or even the Pac-12, you know.
- 23:55SPEAKER_03: So I think that's what the Big 12 has going for it.
- 23:59SPEAKER_06: Yeah, that's a great point.
- 24:00SPEAKER_06: And I but I think I think you're not giving the football enough credit.
- 24:03SPEAKER_06: You know, obviously, whenever you're whenever you're talking about media at the top, it's everything's focused on the postseason, whatever of the majority of fans aren't really fixated on that whenever it comes to football.
- 24:13SPEAKER_06: Um, you know, obviously what they want to talk about are the people that can win national championships, and the people that can win, the teams that can win national championships dominate their leagues.
- 24:21SPEAKER_06: Um, you know, I say obviously the SEC has really great football top to bottom, but it's Alabama's league to lose nearly every year.
- 24:27SPEAKER_06: And same with uh the Big Ten where it's Ohio State's league to lose every year, and it's a big deal when they don't.
- 24:34SPEAKER_06: Um, but with the Big 12, what you'll get is a completely wide open league where they're all pretty darn good and could probably go toe-to-toe with the meat of any of the other leagues, or have potential at least, you know, to do that.
- 24:46SPEAKER_06: Exactly.
- 24:47SPEAKER_06: And you'll have a really, really great product because the parity will be spectacular.
- 24:52SPEAKER_06: And I think any team that goes undefeated in this new Big 12 uh absolutely has a shot to make the playoff in its current state.
- 24:59SPEAKER_06: So I I think the football will be fine.
- 25:01SPEAKER_06: I think the football will be without a question the third best um in the in the in the country.
- 25:07SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and I think another thing the the new Big 12 has going forward is uh the guy we just hired, um, you know, as the new Big 12 commissioner, uh Brett Yormark is going to be announced, or here I think he starts what August 1st as the new Big 12 commissioner.
- 25:24SPEAKER_03: And I think from from the Big 12's perspective, this is a this is a pretty bold hire, but it's a good hire.
- 25:33SPEAKER_03: You needed somebody bold here.
- 25:35SPEAKER_03: Uh the former coo of Rock Nation, uh now is gonna come and lead the Big 12, um, you know, in their in their next endeavors.
- 25:47SPEAKER_03: And uh man, he couldn't have come at a more crazier time uh for all this to be happening right now.
- 25:54SPEAKER_03: But um, you know, I think one thing that the Big 12 does have going for it is you now have Brett your mark instead of Bob Bowlesby.
- 26:01SPEAKER_03: And I think that's really significant because in this kind of situation, I don't think Bob would have really done much.
- 26:07SPEAKER_03: And uh Brett, I think, is a more he's kind of coming in blind, which might be a good thing.
- 26:13SPEAKER_06: No, I I I agree, man.
- 26:14SPEAKER_06: I really like the hire, you know.
- 26:16SPEAKER_06: I know nothing about this guy, but I think that's a good thing.
- 26:18SPEAKER_06: I don't think uh we we wanted someone that's been affiliated with the college world for too long because they they're they they're those kinds of people are usually so set on what the how they like to do things, and they're usually dedicated to a dogma that's been set up for them, you know, following the the standard foundation of how you run college sports.
- 26:34SPEAKER_06: I like that we got this guy that's gonna come in and has no clue how to run college sports, so he's gonna run it like how he knows in a in a private business manner.
- 26:42SPEAKER_06: So I think that's a really great thing, and I think you know, coming in is everyone's expecting to be big.
- 26:48SPEAKER_06: So you have nothing to lose by being really, really aggressive towards the Pac-12 because those teams want to be flirted with.
- 26:53SPEAKER_06: Get in there and start flirting.
- 26:54SPEAKER_06: You know, we can if you can pull this off, you're instantly a legend.
- 26:57SPEAKER_06: And the it'd be one of the greatest days in the Big 12 conference if you pull something of that like that off.
- 27:02SPEAKER_06: So I really like the hire, and I think it's the whole point is we're getting someone that's very tech savvy, like tech savvy, as in they know how modern media works and can navigate these uh NIL waters, which is kind of the big deal right now.
- 27:17SPEAKER_03: What I think his resume speaks for himself.
- 27:19SPEAKER_03: I mean, like, you know, he was the you know, one of the leaders in getting the the Brooklyn Nets to Brooklyn.
- 27:29SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, he was he was you know part of that whole uh bring them from New Jersey, relocate them to Brooklyn, and getting a team to the New York market, getting them as uh you know well established as he has, I think that was really uh something impressive that he did there.
- 27:47SPEAKER_03: Um, and then of course taking on the new venture with Rock Nation.
- 27:50SPEAKER_03: And he just has these connections that you wouldn't get if you hired uh a guy that's been in college football forever, you know, with the way things are going with uh, you know, streaming services and with all this different stuff, all this new technology and all this new um these new outlets that you have to be involved in in the in college sports.
- 28:13SPEAKER_03: This guy's a great hire.
- 28:15SPEAKER_03: Um, he's he's uh he's definitely a uh a different hire, but a good hire.
- 28:20SPEAKER_03: You kind of saw the same thing when the Pac-12 hired George Kleevkov.
- 28:24SPEAKER_03: He came from you know the casino business and MGM and all that stuff.
- 28:28SPEAKER_03: So uh clearly college sports is not what college sports is anymore, it's something completely different, and you got a guy that is completely different, and so I think that's a great hire uh from the Big 12's perspective.
- 28:41SPEAKER_03: And uh obviously he hasn't started yet, but uh man, this is a this is a hell of a first few months for the guy to come into.
- 28:49SPEAKER_06: There wasn't room to play it safe, and I'm glad that uh President Skuvenek and the rest of the Big 12 presidents understood that is now these are desperate times, we might as well toss out a a ambitious pick.
- 29:00SPEAKER_06: So rather than just going with somebody that's well known within the industry, like you and I were touching on.
- 29:04SPEAKER_06: So I really like the hire, and this is nuts that he's he's stepping in with with what he's having to deal with right now.
- 29:11SPEAKER_06: So I really hope that he's he really knows how to schmooze because he better be doing some schmoozing in the mountain time zone right now.
- 29:18SPEAKER_03: Yeah, for sure.
- 29:19SPEAKER_03: Um, I want to talk about Notre Dame.
- 29:22SPEAKER_03: Notre Dame is kind of the next domino, in my opinion.
- 29:26SPEAKER_03: Uh, what they decide to do here, I think will be the biggest indicator of where we're going as a conference in the Big 12, because right now it looks like there's talks of the Big Ten trying to get Notre Dame to join their conference.
- 29:41SPEAKER_03: Notre Dame has been independent the whole time.
- 29:44SPEAKER_03: They are happy with being independent, they have their own media deal, they make a crap ton of money.
- 29:49SPEAKER_03: I think it's somewhere in the$80 million range.
- 29:52SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, so uh if Notre Dame decides to join the Big Ten, that really uh puts uh Oregon and Washington in a really curious position because they can't just add one, you know, they they would be adding two to four if they do get Notre Dame to agree to come to the Big Ten.
- 30:16SPEAKER_03: So, in my opinion, if Notre Dame decides to join the Big Ten conference, Oregon, Washington, and Stanford will follow shortly after, if not at the same time.
- 30:29SPEAKER_03: I think that's and and the Big Ten would go to 20 teams right there because it adds when you add Oregon, Washington, Stanford, you give USC and UCLA some familiar foes, something a little closer.
- 30:42SPEAKER_03: It's not just them two on the West Coast playing a bunch of Midwest teams, you know.
- 30:47SPEAKER_03: So I think that actually adds for the Big Ten.
- 30:50SPEAKER_03: Um, if they do happen to get Notre Dame as well.
- 30:53SPEAKER_03: So if Notre Dame decides to stay independent, then it kind of gives you more options for the Big 12 to potentially add an Oregon or Washington to their fold, you know.
- 31:03SPEAKER_03: So that's gonna be the next thing, in my opinion, to look out for is what is Notre Dame gonna do.
- 31:09SPEAKER_06: Yeah, for sure.
- 31:10SPEAKER_06: And I think that's a big if because I think right now, no, I mean everyone, I think everyone kind of says it so perfectly that you know Notre Dame could do what Notre Dame wants anytime, and so I think that's absolutely true.
- 31:22SPEAKER_06: I don't think Notre Dame is is being it feels any anxiety to feel like they have to do something.
- 31:31SPEAKER_06: Why?
- 31:31SPEAKER_06: It's kind of like his the question would be why why would they need to do something right now?
- 31:35SPEAKER_06: Just because the the the Big Ten and the SEC are about to get filthy rich, they'll be like, We're filthy rich, you know.
- 31:41SPEAKER_06: Like it's just like there's no issue there.
- 31:43SPEAKER_06: And I I just question it.
- 31:46SPEAKER_06: I know a lot of people are like, well, now all of Notre Dame's rivals will be in the Big Ten.
- 31:50SPEAKER_06: Um, but it's still it's like, well, Notre Dame will just schedule them, and no school's gonna say no to scheduling Notre Dame.
- 31:56SPEAKER_06: So and obviously the ACC kind of comes into play here because they have the the contract with Notre Dame, not the Big Ten, you know.
- 32:04SPEAKER_06: So it's just there's a lot of sticky stuff going around with Notre Dame.
- 32:07SPEAKER_06: I know we're all gonna be watching what Notre Dame does, but I'm gonna make it the hot take that Notre Dame's gonna Notre Dame and just be Notre Dame.
- 32:14SPEAKER_06: I don't I don't see them joining a conference because what happens to Notre Dame once they join the Big Ten?
- 32:19SPEAKER_06: What's Notre Dame anymore?
- 32:21SPEAKER_06: You know, how are they any different from an Ohio State or a Michigan at that point?
- 32:24SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, and I mean they've avoided it for this long, why not a little longer?
- 32:29SPEAKER_03: Um, I the difference would be Notre Dame making potentially 20 million more dollars a year.
- 32:34SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, you're going from 80 to 100, which, like we said, through this whole thing is uh, you know, money is the deciding factor here.
- 32:43SPEAKER_03: Notre Dame it has not been the deciding factor for them, and that's why I think if I'm Notre Dame, if I'm running Notre Dame right now, I would want to stay independent as well, because then you get full control of scheduling, of media, of everything from now on.
- 32:58SPEAKER_03: That's I mean, and as they have.
- 33:01SPEAKER_03: So you join a conference, you know, you kind of have to fit the bill of that conference and kind of fall victim to whatever the conference wants to do and what's good for the conference.
- 33:09SPEAKER_03: Notre Dame just has to worry about Notre Dame, and that's why if I'm them, I don't do anything, I stay independent, I do what Notre, like you said, what Notre Dame does.
- 33:19SPEAKER_06: I I think the only way you force Notre Dame to join a conference is if you structure the playoff in a way where you have to be in a conference to get in into it.
- 33:29SPEAKER_06: You know, if they become more of an invitational from the FBS conferences rather than kind of an open slate, um, I think that's how you would get Notre Dame to join a conference, but obviously none of the big conferences uh feel like they need to change the playoff.
- 33:43SPEAKER_06: They already showed that they didn't want to, and now we know why, you know, because the big tw the Big Ten and the SEC will have no issues with how this playoff is is set up already because they could potentially put two or three teams in now with the way that it's set up.
- 33:56SPEAKER_06: So I don't see that happening, therefore I don't see Notre Dame happening.
- 33:59SPEAKER_06: So the eyes just go right back to Washington and uh and Oregon.
- 34:03SPEAKER_06: Do you think it's it's just i it's it'll it all comes down to whether or not Oregon and Washington are straight up flat outs blocked out of the Big Ten or they're invited.
- 34:13SPEAKER_06: And what happens if they're not invited?
- 34:16SPEAKER_06: Does that mean they're going to the Big 12?
- 34:18SPEAKER_06: Like that's the big question here, whenever it comes to the future of the Big 12 with them.
- 34:22SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, for sure.
- 34:23SPEAKER_03: That's there are two schools that I mean, obviously you get that Big Ten invite, you go.
- 34:29SPEAKER_03: Uh, but clearly they were not first in line here, uh, as USC and UCLA were the first two to get invited.
- 34:36SPEAKER_03: And you know, I don't know if the Big Ten is necessarily looking to add Oregon and Washington right now.
- 34:42SPEAKER_03: Which do you hold out another few years if you're Oregon in Washington and just kind of stick it out in the Pac-12 until eventually, you know, the Big Ten does come calling?
- 34:51SPEAKER_03: Or do you just join something right now that you could be a part of in the Big 12 and immediately, you know, still be a power of this conference?
- 35:01SPEAKER_03: I mean, clearly you're third, but you're still, you know, you're surviving for sure.
- 35:06SPEAKER_06: Yeah, and don't you think a USC and UCLA wouldn't want them in the Big Ten anyway?
- 35:12SPEAKER_06: You know, they just got they just caught their prize, and it's just like y'all are just bringing just us, right?
- 35:17SPEAKER_06: Like we don't, you're not gonna bring our competition, right?
- 35:20SPEAKER_06: You know, so it's like because now the UA UCLA and USC can own the West Coast, and um, and obviously Ohio State wants to do that with them now that they can say that we're over here.
- 35:29SPEAKER_03: No, but don't they already?
- 35:31SPEAKER_03: Don't they already?
- 35:33SPEAKER_06: Yeah, they do, but I mean, you don't think Oregon is a real player in recruiting over there?
- 35:37SPEAKER_06: No, they're a player, yeah.
- 35:38SPEAKER_06: And that just makes it that much easier to beat them.
- 35:41SPEAKER_06: I'm not saying that they're obviously not going to win every single player over just by conference affiliation, it's not how it works, but it's it it definitely helps, definitely helps jolt them over them because I mean usc has had a lot of issues with Oregon.
- 35:53SPEAKER_06: Oregon's been spanking that butt, you know, they they they've been really having their way with the Pac-12 for the most part, and Utah has gotten scary as well over there in in Pac-12 terms.
- 36:01SPEAKER_06: Um, so it's just it it kind of feels like USC and UCLA are looking to do this to get away from them, not not be like, okay, can you bring our friends?
- 36:10SPEAKER_06: They're not really our friends, they're our enemies, you know, our competition.
- 36:13SPEAKER_06: So that's just kind of like my question with that.
- 36:15SPEAKER_06: And you know, let's say Oregon and Washington do stand pat in the in the pack, this new pack 10, they just take it to 10 teams while this these new conferences become uh very powerful, very rich.
- 36:28SPEAKER_06: So I think they kind of those those teams in those conferences skyrocket program-wise beyond what Oregon and Washington are.
- 36:35SPEAKER_06: So what's the what's the the incentive to bring them on at that point, you know?
- 36:40SPEAKER_06: Yeah, it's kind of it's kind of my theoretical question.
- 36:44SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I mean, it's I dude, there's so much that has gone into this that it's like I don't know.
- 36:51SPEAKER_03: And I don't and I don't know what the hell is gonna happen, man.
- 36:54SPEAKER_03: There's there could be all all of it wouldn't surprise me.
- 36:57SPEAKER_03: If I saw Notre Dame to join the Big Ten tomorrow, that would that wouldn't surprise you.
- 37:02SPEAKER_03: It wouldn't surprise me.
- 37:03SPEAKER_03: It wouldn't surprise me because I would see, hey, oh, they want to make 20 million more dollars a year and potentially more.
- 37:09SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I get it.
- 37:10SPEAKER_03: We're going into this two super conference deal, and you know, would NBC let them do that though?
- 37:17SPEAKER_06: I don't really think MBC is a good idea.
- 37:18SPEAKER_03: That's the part where I really don't know.
- 37:20SPEAKER_03: Like I don't know what NBC's willing to do.
- 37:22SPEAKER_06: Don't you think NBC would be like, Well, come on, it's our only college football thing.
- 37:27SPEAKER_06: We'll we'll we'll pay you that, okay?
- 37:28SPEAKER_06: We'll pay you a hundred million dollars a year.
- 37:30SPEAKER_06: How about that?
- 37:31SPEAKER_06: Kind of thing, you know, because they that's a bargaining chip against NBC for sure.
- 37:35SPEAKER_06: And you know, that's like their whole they're they've had a relationship together for what like 50, 60 years or something.
- 37:41SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 37:42SPEAKER_03: I dude, I don't know.
- 37:44SPEAKER_03: At this point, at this point, it's so much.
- 37:47SPEAKER_03: Um, I I guess we should stop speculating because we really don't know uh what's gonna happen, but we will keep talking about it as as things happen.
- 37:56SPEAKER_03: But did you have something else?
- 37:58SPEAKER_06: Yeah, yeah.
- 37:58SPEAKER_06: I was just like, let's just I we could just bring it back in.
- 38:00SPEAKER_06: I I for the sake, let's get back on Texas Tech.
- 38:03SPEAKER_06: For the sake of Texas Tech, I really, really hope we can swing this deal.
- 38:07SPEAKER_06: I think if you can get Utah, Colorado, and the Arizona schools, I think that legitimized legitimatizes your conference big time.
- 38:15SPEAKER_06: And if Texas Tech's in a legitimate conference, I'm very happy.
- 38:19SPEAKER_06: You know, I I still want us to be taken seriously, and I don't want to feel like we've been relegated, you know.
- 38:24SPEAKER_06: And obviously, and everyone's gonna be saying, well, it's not the SSC or the Big Ten, but it's like, well, it's better than everything else, and that's what I wouldn't be able to say.
- 38:31SPEAKER_06: And these games would be a ton of fun.
- 38:33SPEAKER_06: So I really think you're you hold together a really fun conference with two with you're adding big rivalries.
- 38:37SPEAKER_06: You had the showdown in the desert, you had the holy war, and then you bring Colorado back to play everybody else again.
- 38:43SPEAKER_06: I think it's a great setup.
- 38:44SPEAKER_06: I think that it'd be in if you look on it on paper, that's a really, really fun league.
- 38:49SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and that's what I was gonna get to next, is kind of your ideal conference for Texas Tech.
- 38:53SPEAKER_06: What sorry, I beat you to it then, but no, you're good, you're good.
- 38:56SPEAKER_03: I mean, well, and and it's really kind of a matter of yes, these four teams have been connected to joining the Big 12 potentially, uh, the Arizona schools, Colorado, and Utah.
- 39:08SPEAKER_03: But in my opinion, the ideal conference is also adding Oregon and Washington.
- 39:13SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, you add those six schools, you make it an 18-team conference, um, and and you're pretty set as number three.
- 39:21SPEAKER_03: And you're set, you're stable, you're surviving, you know, for at least you know, the the recent future, um, you know, until all this kind of settles down and and the dust goes.
- 39:34SPEAKER_03: But um with this 18-team Big 12, potentially, you get three pods.
- 39:40SPEAKER_03: It's the pods that the gambling gouchers put out today uh on Twitter.
- 39:44SPEAKER_03: I think pretty much everybody was in agreement on uh, you know, those three pods, you know, logistically, location-wise, everything kind of makes sense with these pods.
- 39:54SPEAKER_03: So basically, pod one, Oregon, Washington, Utah, BYU, Arizona, Arizona State.
- 40:01SPEAKER_03: That would be one pod.
- 40:02SPEAKER_03: Pod number two would be your Texas Tech, Baylor, TCU, Oklahoma State, Houston, Colorado.
- 40:09SPEAKER_03: That would be your second pod.
- 40:10SPEAKER_03: Number three would be UCF, West Virginia, Cincinnati, Kansas, Kansas State, and Iowa State.
- 40:17SPEAKER_03: Um, now those just make sense.
- 40:19SPEAKER_03: They just do.
- 40:20SPEAKER_03: Like, obviously, you're working with the entire continental US here, um, and you have to kind of split the entire country into three conferences.
- 40:29SPEAKER_03: Um, but this is kind of the best way to put it, um, I in my opinion.
- 40:34SPEAKER_06: You you think that's a you think it's a better idea?
- 40:36SPEAKER_06: Let's let's just talk football first.
- 40:38SPEAKER_06: I think that's I think the pods are a great idea, but I think the pods work better for sports like basketball and baseball.
- 40:43SPEAKER_06: I feel like with football, you can just pair people up with rivals and just completely shuffle everything else.
- 40:48SPEAKER_06: You don't think that's a better idea?
- 40:50SPEAKER_03: Well, so what I would think in terms of football, scheduling-wise, you get your five pod games because there's six six teams in a pod, you play five pod games every single year, no matter what you're playing those five teams, and then you get two other games from each of the other pods, and those can rotate yearly.
- 41:11SPEAKER_03: You have one home, one one away from each of the other pods.
- 41:14SPEAKER_03: So that's what seven games, right?
- 41:17SPEAKER_03: Seven, nine games right there, and then you get your three traditional non-conference opponents that can be your FCS school, and then you know, whoever else, G5, whatever, um, potentially an SEC or a Big Ten school, ACC, whatever.
- 41:32SPEAKER_03: So all that adds to 12 games.
- 41:34SPEAKER_03: And to me, that's pretty realistic.
- 41:37SPEAKER_03: So you would look at a schedule potentially for a Texas Tech team in one year where you're guaranteed to play Baylor, TCU, Oklahoma State, Houston, Colorado every single year, and then you play two of Oregon, Washington, Utah, BYU, Arizona, Arizona State every year.
- 41:53SPEAKER_03: You play two of those schools, and then you also play two of the other pod of UCF, West Virginia, Cincinnati, Kansas, Kansas State, Iowa State.
- 42:02SPEAKER_03: So I think to me, that kind of works out.
- 42:05SPEAKER_03: Yes, you're gonna go through a lot of years of not playing some of these schools, but that's what we've gotten with these super conferences for sure.
- 42:11SPEAKER_03: And yeah, there's not a real way to go around that.
- 42:14SPEAKER_03: So, um, yes, it does work better for basketball scheduling, but you can also make it work with football.
- 42:19SPEAKER_06: How do you how do you crown a champion with the three pods?
- 42:23SPEAKER_03: Um, yeah, that's something I I haven't thought of yet.
- 42:26SPEAKER_06: Yeah, I know it's it's it's that it's just the three pods kind of complicates things a bit.
- 42:31SPEAKER_06: But so I guess how would you crown a champion if you just did the rivals too, right?
- 42:34SPEAKER_06: You just flat out go with the best records.
- 42:36SPEAKER_06: What if three or four teams have the same record kind of thing?
- 42:38SPEAKER_06: Now obviously I don't know if that'd be possible, but uh if you we'd have to look at the math first.
- 42:44SPEAKER_06: But I I think the pods are a great idea, and I I think they're a great idea because they build familiarity within the the conference.
- 42:50SPEAKER_06: So you always have no you have something to look forward to every year, and that's what built rivalries, that's what builds tradition and culture within your conference.
- 42:57SPEAKER_06: So I would be pro the pods as well.
- 43:00SPEAKER_06: Um, and I think that's probably the best way you could chop it up as well.
- 43:03SPEAKER_06: I it just kind of gets tricky when we talk about how do you crown the best team because the what's the important the important part about crowning the best team is we want a yeah, these universities, especially at our level of school, uh uh uh want want nothing more than a conference title in a sport like football.
- 43:20SPEAKER_06: You know, that's that's obviously where most of our eyes are set, not on nattys.
- 43:24SPEAKER_06: But the uh the the idea with crowning a champion is that's potentially who you're sending to the playoff, which is obviously a really big deal to the conference level because they want that national uh recognizability and respect and prestige, and that brings money into for everybody in the in the conference.
- 43:39SPEAKER_06: So that just kind of complicates the question there.
- 43:42SPEAKER_03: Yeah, for sure.
- 43:43SPEAKER_03: I mean, it it's like, are we even gonna have a playoff after this?
- 43:46SPEAKER_03: Are we gonna have an eight team play?
- 43:48SPEAKER_03: Like, I this complicates everything because all the playoff talk that we've had before this is considering the five power conferences and getting those champions in there, and you just can't consider that.
- 44:00SPEAKER_03: Should the Big 12 steal some PAC schools and the Pac-12 basically reverts back to a G5 conference, you know?
- 44:06SPEAKER_03: So it's just like that's going to be a whole nother discussion when all the dust settles in terms of who's going to be in what conference.
- 44:14SPEAKER_03: But um, yeah, I think you just kind of take the two best teams from and put them in a championship game.
- 44:20SPEAKER_03: That's kind of what everybody's going back to.
- 44:22SPEAKER_03: You know, people are getting rid of uh these conferences are getting rid of their divisions and just going with you know the two best teams and go play it out, and boom, one goes to the playoff, and the loser potentially goes to the playoff as well, you know, if you're the SEC or the Big Ten.
- 44:37SPEAKER_03: So um I I still think with this new potentially 18 to 16 team Big 12, you know, you still want an extended playoff, you still want an eight-team playoff to try to get one to potentially two schools into this, you know, format because we know the SEC and the Big Ten are gonna now have three to four schools making this playoff every single year.
- 45:00SPEAKER_03: Um, so you know, it's just kind of you still hope for an extended playoff, but also uh, you know, you you have a good shot at it with this group of schools if you take the two posts, you know.
- 45:11SPEAKER_06: You absolutely do, yeah.
- 45:13SPEAKER_06: Um, I think the nuclear option obviously is the Big Ten and the SEC saying we'll just do our own playoff, which would absolutely suck.
- 45:20SPEAKER_06: But I think I think the good news is they would understand that that that is destructive for the sport as a whole because that would ruin the attention for 80% of the fans.
- 45:30SPEAKER_06: So I thankfully I don't think that would happen.
- 45:33SPEAKER_06: Um, but yeah, man, it's it's it's a really interesting thing, it's a it's a really exciting time, but it's also really crappy time because you know, obviously old farts will always say it's not the sport that we used to know, but it we have truly entered a turbulent era that I don't think has really been seen before in in college sports.
- 45:51SPEAKER_06: Just the the sheer amount of control that the TV networks have over conferences now is is in is insane.
- 45:57SPEAKER_06: I think a lot of people that you know are pretty well versed in the sport are on on are on point when they say it's not necessarily the uh SEC poaching the Big 12, it's the it's Disney using the SEC to poach the Big 12, more so than you know, and you could say the same thing thing about uh the Big Ten using Fox, well Fox using the Big Ten to go get them because you know it's kind of like a proxy war.
- 46:20SPEAKER_06: And if some people were making jokes like a decade ago that eventually it's gonna be the ESPN conference versus the Fox conference.
- 46:25SPEAKER_06: And I mean, how far off are we from that?
- 46:27SPEAKER_06: And that's that's kind of the crappy thing of it, you know?
- 46:30SPEAKER_06: It's just it's it's and you you absolutely we we're sitting here to talk about how great it could be if we could bury the Pac-12, but there are still fans of Oregon State and Washington State that care just as much as you and I do, and the people listening about their school, and they could be witnessing their their their their their beloved team going to the non-west, and that sucks, man.
- 46:48SPEAKER_06: And because we were we felt that last year, we thought, man, imagine TechSech and the freaking American.
- 46:54SPEAKER_06: So it's just it's not a fun time for a lot of people.
- 46:57SPEAKER_06: It's just and like I kind of opened up our conversation about this, saying that how happy we can be that our feet are at least on solid ground, as far as we know.
- 47:05SPEAKER_06: So, and I because I really don't think any Big 12 team is in the position to backstab anybody right now.
- 47:10SPEAKER_06: I think it's a good thing.
- 47:12SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 47:13SPEAKER_03: I mean, there definitely is a position to where a Big 12 team could, you know, backstab the conference if it as soon as the SEC or Big Ten comes calling, you join.
- 47:23SPEAKER_03: That's just what I'm saying.
- 47:24SPEAKER_06: I just whatever I'm saying that is I just don't think anybody could hold the knife because it hasn't been given.
- 47:28SPEAKER_06: I know we all would.
- 47:30SPEAKER_06: I'm just saying the knife isn't in anybody's hand, is more of what I'm saying.
- 47:33SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no, that's yeah, that's true.
- 47:36SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, I I I hate it as a as a fan.
- 47:40SPEAKER_03: I hate you know not being able to play schools that you have hundred years of history with, and um, you know, just it just the college sports isn't the same, you know, it never will be.
- 47:53SPEAKER_03: And yeah, there's always gonna be a part, I think, of a lot of us that are clamoring, you know, for having the 90s, you know, watching the Big 12 or watching, you know, those those Pac-12, the Pac-12 teams are gonna, you know, miss having their conference back and all that kind of stuff.
- 48:08SPEAKER_03: But uh, you know, unfortunately, with all this money that this sport makes and the fine lines that you have to, you know, go between, uh, this was kind of inevitable, which is disappointing.
- 48:20SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, we couldn't find an offer very long.
- 48:23SPEAKER_03: Eventually, money rules all, and uh, that's kind of where we're at right now.
- 48:27SPEAKER_03: So um, you know, I just hope for the best and hope for survival.
- 48:31SPEAKER_03: That's what I'm here for.
- 48:32SPEAKER_06: Absolutely, man.
- 48:34SPEAKER_06: Um, you think you think that it's kind of a big kind of silver lining with the Pac-12 saving itself?
- 48:39SPEAKER_06: You think that's good for the sport?
- 48:40SPEAKER_06: Or you think that's like it's the you think the issue of them competing with the Big 12 is too much?
- 48:45SPEAKER_06: You'd rather just put them in the ground.
- 48:47SPEAKER_03: Yeah, at this point, it's too far gone.
- 48:49SPEAKER_03: You have to survive and you have to steal these schools, and you have to keep growing with the sport.
- 48:54SPEAKER_03: You know, you can't revert back, you can't Bob Bullsby it and stay at 10 and be, you know, just cool with it, just cool with where we're at, because that's not what anybody else is doing right now.
- 49:03SPEAKER_06: So you say Bob Bullsby, man.
- 49:06SPEAKER_06: Does he get any grace now from what happened to the Pac-12?
- 49:09SPEAKER_06: No, or no, you think flat out these commissioners are just morons and need to start with the case.
- 49:14SPEAKER_03: Not that I don't think I know.
- 49:16SPEAKER_03: I always think there's more to it than just hey, this guy's truly just a dumb person and didn't understand.
- 49:22SPEAKER_03: But I do, I do think there was a part of Bullsby that was just content with having U T and O U BR powers and just stick it with 10 teams when during that whole time he should have been looking to expand and he didn't, and that was kind of the downfall of the whole thing.
- 49:38SPEAKER_03: And we managed to patch together and potentially with this new commissioner, we need to be on the offensive and actually grow the conference with the sport instead of you know reverting back to what uh you know, and letting people poach our conference because we're sick of that, you know.
- 49:55SPEAKER_03: We need to we need to grow and we need to poach, we need to be the hunter and not the hunted.
- 50:00SPEAKER_06: I just think I'm on the side with this kind of stuff that you know, there's nothing that these commissioners can have done.
- 50:04SPEAKER_06: I think these schools made up their mind, and nothing these commissioners could have done would have made them happy enough to stay.
- 50:10SPEAKER_06: Because I just think that the the the price tag that is being written for them in these other conferences just blows up anything you could possibly give them, you know.
- 50:19SPEAKER_06: So I just I think I think Bob deserves a little grace there because I mean I just don't think it's it was a neptitude, I think it was just more of there's two brands that wanted to make more money, and the decision was made.
- 50:31SPEAKER_03: I think he still could have he could have done he could have been more proactive.
- 50:34SPEAKER_06: Um hey, hey, talking tech, or at least Tristan McGodagal on Talking Tech Pod was like always saying add BYU and I got my wish at a price, that's for sure.
- 50:45SPEAKER_03: So, yeah, it would have been cool if we had BYU, Texas, and OU in the conference and still been, you know, making all that more money.
- 50:52SPEAKER_03: But you know, there's good and bad to it because we don't have to deal with Texas making all of our decisions for us, yes, anymore.
- 50:58SPEAKER_03: Absolutely.
- 50:58SPEAKER_03: So that's a good thing if we can become, you know, say we become a power in football with this new conference.
- 51:05SPEAKER_03: Hey, it ended up being a good thing, you know.
- 51:08SPEAKER_03: Say we're just uh an absolutely dominant basketball conference, which I think we will be, and you know, we already have the two past champions who could potentially have and add an Arizona to that, or add Houston in now, Houston's in now, you know, a massive basketball program.
- 51:25SPEAKER_03: So um, you know, I it's just so much, man.
- 51:29SPEAKER_03: It's so much.
- 51:30SPEAKER_03: Um, I I do think adding those four schools, we could potentially be looking into new markets to host things.
- 51:38SPEAKER_03: Uh, you know, Las Vegas, Las Vegas has been brought up a bunch.
- 51:42SPEAKER_03: If we bring in the Arizona schools, Utah and Colorado, Las Vegas has to be where you have your basketball championship.
- 51:48SPEAKER_03: It has to be.
- 51:50SPEAKER_03: It's a perfect opportunity for everything for money making opportunity for just the spotlight is on you in Vegas.
- 51:57SPEAKER_06: It's perfect in my flash, it's fun, it's cool.
- 52:01SPEAKER_06: You know, it's it's that's that's where you put the basketball tournament for sure.
- 52:05SPEAKER_06: I think you you could you could keep football in Dallas for sure, because I think that's what that would be in the best interest of every school in the conference.
- 52:12SPEAKER_06: Like even Oregon, let's say even Oregon and Washington are in it.
- 52:14SPEAKER_06: I'm sure even they would want to keep it in Dallas because you'd want to maintain that Texas presence.
- 52:19SPEAKER_06: Because out of all the states in the conference, obviously Texas is the most important when it comes to acquiring talent.
- 52:24SPEAKER_06: So that's definitely where you'd probably want to keep your uh your your football championship, if not maybe Houston, but Dallas still just makes more sense.
- 52:31SPEAKER_06: So, but yeah, man, it's it's it's cool because we got a whole bunch of new venues to play with, you know.
- 52:36SPEAKER_06: So I kind of hope we move some things out of Arlington, you know, maybe keep football there, but maybe you could put baseball in Denver or something like that, you know, like do something cool, you know, just like kind of play around with it.
- 52:46SPEAKER_03: Well, and dude, like just from a selfish perspective, adding these four schools would be freaking awesome.
- 52:51SPEAKER_03: Like it would be so fun just being able to go visit Boulder on a friend's trip for the tech Colorado game or go like this adds Salt Lake, Tucson, like all these fun cities that we could all go visit uh in the new Big 12.
- 53:06SPEAKER_03: Uh you know, not even mentioning Provo and you know, having Houston, you know, right there in our backyard.
- 53:12SPEAKER_03: So uh it would just be fun.
- 53:14SPEAKER_03: Interesting, Utah on your home schedule, you know, like that's great.
- 53:18SPEAKER_06: That's so fun in any of the Arizona schools.
- 53:20SPEAKER_06: We re reborn the uh the border conference, man.
- 53:23SPEAKER_06: You know, it would be a net positive for Texas Tech bands.
- 53:26SPEAKER_06: Like I said, that straight up, you're like you're probably in the most fun league in football, you're in the best league in basketball.
- 53:33SPEAKER_06: Like, it's a lot to be, it's it's a lot to desire.
- 53:36SPEAKER_06: Like it doesn't leave any desire, you're getting desire, is what I'm saying.
- 53:39SPEAKER_06: Like, that's it's it's a fabulous conference, even even if you don't get work in Washington, because those are kind of just like uh uh uh pie in the sky in our heads right now.
- 53:48SPEAKER_06: But those mountain schools, man, what a freaking blast it would be.
- 53:52SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no doubt.
- 53:54SPEAKER_03: Oh man, you got anything else on on realignment?
- 53:58SPEAKER_06: No, man.
- 53:59SPEAKER_06: I I felt like it's it's we just because mostly it's just you're just using your imagination, right?
- 54:04SPEAKER_06: So there's not a whole lot you can just sit here and and uh talk about with any sort of grep grap grip grip on reality, but it's fun, it's fun to think about nevertheless.
- 54:13SPEAKER_06: And I just want to say that I'm just so glad.
- 54:16SPEAKER_06: Like, yeah, you know, I mentioned it's really sad for Washington State and OSU and Oregon State fans, but can I just say how grateful I am that it's not us on the other side of this for once, you know, that it's it's not us sweating about where Texas Tech is gonna be in the world in the world of college sports anymore.
- 54:33SPEAKER_03: Yeah, but I mean, also it adds to it because you're like, if if Oregon and Washington go to the Big Ten, it's like, oh God, all right.
- 54:40SPEAKER_03: So please, we need to get these four pack schools or else I don't even know what we're gonna do.
- 54:45SPEAKER_03: And now I think the worst choice, the worst case scenario is if Oregon and Washington decide to work it out in the Pac 12, and now you have a true, like you know, even right here with the Big 12 and the Pac-12.
- 54:58SPEAKER_03: I don't want that.
- 54:59SPEAKER_03: I want to just freaking just take the Pac 12's heart out and just take it from them and not let them survive, please.
- 55:06SPEAKER_06: Hey, I mean, it it there's there's a bit of a uh uh a retribution to it, a bit of a vengeance with the way they were all acting last year.
- 55:12SPEAKER_06: You know, everyone was just laughing at us and dancing on our graves, and it's just like the Big 12 might come out of this looking pretty darn good, and no one saw that coming.
- 55:21SPEAKER_06: And especially if you could put the dagger into the back here and just be done with it and eliminate the competition, and it would be cool is you're pretty much the the conference of the west, you know.
- 55:31SPEAKER_06: Like you once you get past the Mississippi, it's all Big 12 country, which is pretty cool, which it'd be a lot of fun, and then LA, you know, but LA separate thing, yeah.
- 55:41SPEAKER_03: Oh man, huh?
- 55:44SPEAKER_03: Lot to be deciding still, uh, for everybody.
- 55:48SPEAKER_03: We're a lot of speculation here, we don't know the answers, but uh it's fun to talk about it.
- 55:53SPEAKER_03: It is uh it's definitely a weird time, but a crazy time.
- 55:58SPEAKER_06: Welcome to the job, Brett.
- 56:00SPEAKER_03: Yeah, welcome.
- 56:01SPEAKER_03: Good luck, buddy.
- 56:02SPEAKER_03: Welcome in, Brett Yorbach to the Big 12.
- 56:05SPEAKER_03: Please help us get out of this mess.
- 56:08SPEAKER_03: Uh please help us grow.
- 56:11SPEAKER_03: Um, I guess we should hit on some decommits, uh, some actual Texas Tech news because I know a lot of this has been Big Ten and SEC and all that, but right um for Texas Tech, uh, we finally saw this coming.
- 56:26SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, it was rumored for a while.
- 56:29SPEAKER_03: Uh Joey McGuire's first football class at Texas Tech is, you know, turning out to kind of even out, I should say.
- 56:37SPEAKER_03: Uh we were number two for a while, we were number one in the country for a while, and now uh those big schools are poaching our dudes.
- 56:45SPEAKER_03: And it happens every year, um, you know, not necessarily to Texas Tech, but to those middle middle tier schools uh like a tech.
- 56:54SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, once these high-profile recruits start getting looked at by the Ohio States and the uh Alabamas of the world, you know, you're gonna lose a few of them.
- 57:04SPEAKER_03: And eventually we did.
- 57:05SPEAKER_03: Um, we had two recent um football commits from the class of 2023 uh decommit and commit to different bigger schools.
- 57:14SPEAKER_03: Uh well, one of them uh it's debatable, but yeah.
- 57:18SPEAKER_03: Calvin Simpson Hunt uh is is going to be a buckeye now, uh, decommitted from Texas Tech, has now committed to Ohio State.
- 57:27SPEAKER_03: And LJ Martin decommitted from Texas Tech and is now going to be a running back at Stanford.
- 57:34SPEAKER_03: Um, which, you know, I I guess your thoughts kind of on on both these guys, uh, their decisions here.
- 57:41SPEAKER_06: Well, I really like the way you put it, man.
- 57:42SPEAKER_06: It's I the I I'll just add that I'm just glad that we're in the real running like this to be landing guys.
- 57:48SPEAKER_06: You know, obviously it's hard for a shiny eyed kid to look past a big glowy thing like Ohio State.
- 57:56SPEAKER_06: You know, it's just obviously that's a lot coming at you.
- 57:59SPEAKER_06: And it I'm just glad that we're in the discussion right now because if we could start capitalizing with some winning seasons and with putting kids into the NFL, that all changes, you know.
- 58:09SPEAKER_06: I worse we still won't get uh every five star in the book, but we'll start snagging some and some four stars.
- 58:16SPEAKER_06: We will.
- 58:16SPEAKER_06: We'll start getting them, and I think because we'll never be able to recruit on the same level as them, no matter what.
- 58:21SPEAKER_06: So I think just being in this conversation to snagging, upsetting, upset, snagging some of them, it's great.
- 58:26SPEAKER_06: As for the Stanford move, uh it just kind of shows that there's more going on behind the scenes that we know, you know.
- 58:33SPEAKER_06: Maybe maybe there's something going on with the coaching staff, something going on at tech they just wasn't vibing with anymore, or maybe he actually really cares about his education and wants the Stanford degree.
- 58:42SPEAKER_06: There's a lot that can go into it, so it's just obviously, you know, you and I would never have ill feelings towards high schoolers and or talk mess about them.
- 58:50SPEAKER_06: It's just it is what it is, and I just have no doubt that we're gonna reload with with talent to replace that.
- 58:57SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I mean, the LJ Martin, the LJ Martin one was surprising to me, uh, because it was it was Stanford, and because you know he's an El Paso kid and he committed, and we were just like, Okay, uh, you know, this is great, four-star running back.
- 59:11SPEAKER_03: You know, we're used to getting some pretty high for high profile running backs here at Texas Tech.
- 59:16SPEAKER_03: Um, I think maybe the loss of DeAndre Smith could have been a factor in that.
- 59:21SPEAKER_03: I'm not sure if he committed when DeAndre Smith was still on the coaching staff.
- 59:24SPEAKER_03: Uh, that could have been a factor there.
- 59:26SPEAKER_03: But uh Calvin Simpson hunt, I mean, we just saw uh we just saw it coming because every it seemed like every day he was putting out a new, oh, thank you to Ohio State, thank you to Alabama for looking at thank you for Texas, Oklahoma.
- 59:41SPEAKER_03: And I was like, oh no, we're gonna this isn't good.
- 59:45SPEAKER_03: We're gonna lose this guy to somebody.
- 59:47SPEAKER_03: He's getting way too many offers from too many big schools.
- 59:50SPEAKER_03: So, I mean, obviously no ill will towards the kid, but uh you know, it's it's just tough to keep those guys.
- 59:56SPEAKER_06: Hey, but we can put a smile on our tech faces.
- 59:58SPEAKER_06: The reason why we got ahead of it and got a commit from this kid because we're the only we were the only school that cared.
- 1:00:03SPEAKER_06: We're the only school that like got in there and and gave him an offer.
- 1:00:07SPEAKER_06: And do you know why?
- 1:00:08SPEAKER_06: It's because Joey Maguire's connections within the state.
- 1:00:11SPEAKER_06: Yeah, obviously, the high school coach was like, guys, this guy is the real deal, and no one cared until uh Texas Tech said, Yeah, get him over here.
- 1:00:20SPEAKER_06: He rocks, and everyone's like, Wait, Texas Tech just took a a got a commit from some kid that like hasn't been looked at from anywhere else.
- 1:00:26SPEAKER_06: Maybe we do need to look at him.
- 1:00:27SPEAKER_06: And once they did, you know, the ball started rolling.
- 1:00:29SPEAKER_06: So the great news is is we have insider trader information now, and that's that was obviously the main draw for a Joey McGuire.
- 1:00:37SPEAKER_06: And it proved there, even if we didn't get him, it just shows that the potential for us to keep that going is 100% there.
- 1:00:42SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and like you said earlier, you put a couple winning seasons together, a couple bowl wins, a couple eight, nine, ten win seasons together.
- 1:00:50SPEAKER_03: You know, you're gonna start keeping these types of guys, and and you're gonna get in on them early, and then you're gonna keep them because you're gonna be a better program than what you are now.
- 1:00:58SPEAKER_03: So that's the whole goal here.
- 1:01:00SPEAKER_03: But um, you know, you you you win some, you lose some, and we lost a couple lately.
- 1:01:05SPEAKER_03: We're gonna win a few in the future.
- 1:01:06SPEAKER_06: So fish in the sea, all that.
- 1:01:08SPEAKER_03: Yeah, exactly.
- 1:01:09SPEAKER_03: You know how the saying goes, yeah.
- 1:01:11SPEAKER_06: You know, because you're talking about football players with fish in the sea, exactly.
- 1:01:16SPEAKER_06: Um teenage high schoolers, football, football, yeah, Friday night lights, yeah.
- 1:01:23SPEAKER_06: Fish seas.
- 1:01:27SPEAKER_03: Oh man, did you have anything else before we wrap it up?
- 1:01:30SPEAKER_06: Dude, no, I I think next week, yeah.
- 1:01:32SPEAKER_06: How okay, probably the last discussion.
- 1:01:34SPEAKER_06: How fast does this go?
- 1:01:36SPEAKER_06: How how long until we know what things will really start looking like?
- 1:01:39SPEAKER_03: I think you'll see it in a week.
- 1:01:41SPEAKER_03: You really think so?
- 1:01:42SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I think you'll see it.
- 1:01:42SPEAKER_06: I think we'll know what's happening with the Pac-12 within a week.
- 1:01:46SPEAKER_03: It could be, I'm just yeah, I think so.
- 1:01:50SPEAKER_03: I think uh why are these schools have to move quick with these decisions?
- 1:01:54SPEAKER_03: I mean, I guess it all kind of depends on Notre Dame, and Notre Dame can take their sweep time with their decision, they don't have to decide right now.
- 1:02:01SPEAKER_03: I mean, they're fine with where they are, but um, I so yeah, I guess this could carry on.
- 1:02:06SPEAKER_03: I think 1012 put out something where uh it was like it was 51 days before we added the four new Big 12 schools after UT and OU decided to leave.
- 1:02:16SPEAKER_06: So you don't think that's a reflection of how it's gonna work?
- 1:02:19SPEAKER_03: No, it could take that long.
- 1:02:20SPEAKER_03: I just I like I'm I don't know if it's a combination of me just wanting it to be over with and uh some of these schools feeling the pressure, uh, you know, especially those lowly packed 12 schools right now.
- 1:02:32SPEAKER_03: And if the Big 12's offering you, I would accept it, you know, immediately.
- 1:02:36SPEAKER_03: So I it just I I could see it happening tomorrow, I could see it happening in 50 days.
- 1:02:42SPEAKER_03: I really don't know.
- 1:02:43SPEAKER_06: I think I think a lot of it depends on the kind of number they receive from their uh projections about how much uh the TV deal is gonna be.
- 1:02:50SPEAKER_06: I think once they see that things will start really actually moving, whether they stay or go.
- 1:02:54SPEAKER_06: I think that's probably what it's what mostly hinges on.
- 1:02:57SPEAKER_06: So it's yeah, and seeing who's gonna stab you in the back first, you know, like who's gonna open the gate first, kind of thing.
- 1:03:03SPEAKER_06: So if if it does open, so I think it just kind of is based on that.
- 1:03:06SPEAKER_06: I don't think I want it to happen in a week, I just don't think it will.
- 1:03:09SPEAKER_06: I bet it, but I think by the end of the summer we'll probably have a good idea of what's happening.
- 1:03:13SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that's that's probably fair.
- 1:03:15SPEAKER_03: You're probably right there.
- 1:03:16SPEAKER_03: I have no idea.
- 1:03:17SPEAKER_03: There's just I no idea, no idea with any of this.
- 1:03:21SPEAKER_03: I didn't expect UT and OU to leave.
- 1:03:23SPEAKER_03: And hey, you're gone.
- 1:03:24SPEAKER_05: Yep.
- 1:03:25SPEAKER_03: So uh whole thing, man.
- 1:03:30SPEAKER_03: But all right, dude, let's let's wrap it up here with uh realignment talk.
- 1:03:34SPEAKER_03: Obviously, we'll keep you all updated as the news comes.
- 1:03:38SPEAKER_03: Um, song of the week.
- 1:03:40SPEAKER_03: Go ahead, Tristan.
- 1:03:41SPEAKER_06: Song of the week.
- 1:03:42SPEAKER_06: So speaking of new stuff, my man Drew Kennedy, uh local Dubrontels songwriter, country artist, has released a new album and I really like it.
- 1:03:52SPEAKER_06: I I think it's I think it's great.
- 1:03:54SPEAKER_06: It's called Marathon.
- 1:03:56SPEAKER_06: Um, it just dropped this this past week or so.
- 1:03:58SPEAKER_06: And the song I'm going with on it is The Hat.
- 1:04:01SPEAKER_06: I think it's just a really charming song about you know the uh the life's lifetime of a hat of an old guy handing it off to a young guy for so that hat's life can live on.
- 1:04:10SPEAKER_06: Um, it's just it's got a really great beat to it, and I think it's just a really well-written song.
- 1:04:14SPEAKER_06: I think this whole album was spectacular.
- 1:04:16SPEAKER_06: It feels like you're on a campfire with Drew Kennedy.
- 1:04:18SPEAKER_06: Great work.
- 1:04:30SPEAKER_03: Very nice, very nice.
- 1:04:31SPEAKER_03: I'm not, I don't know if I've listened to that one yet, but I've listened to a lot of the new album, and yeah, man, it's he's got a he's got a storytelling aspect to his music that is pretty remarkable.
- 1:04:42SPEAKER_03: So uh a lot of I mean, obviously very smooth, very low-key uh type of songs, and uh, but he really paints a picture, so that's a that's a good choice.
- 1:04:50SPEAKER_06: Absolutely, man.
- 1:04:51SPEAKER_06: What you got for me?
- 1:04:52SPEAKER_03: I got a cover.
- 1:04:54SPEAKER_03: I got a cover.
- 1:04:54SPEAKER_03: Um we like covers.
- 1:04:56SPEAKER_03: Yeah, we all like covers.
- 1:04:57SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, yesterday was 4th of July.
- 1:04:59SPEAKER_03: Get a little little America in you, and you're listening to a lot of good uh little hot dogs in you, too many beers in you, yeah.
- 1:05:06SPEAKER_03: A couple lizdies, a couple uh course lights, and we're having a good time, you know.
- 1:05:11SPEAKER_03: See some see some fire fireworks going off, but um yeah, see see all the people that are recording the fireworks to post on their Instagram.
- 1:05:20SPEAKER_03: But never watch again, never watch again.
- 1:05:22SPEAKER_03: It's please.
- 1:05:24SPEAKER_06: Don't be it's it's like those people and people at concerts.
- 1:05:26SPEAKER_06: Stop it.
- 1:05:27SPEAKER_06: Stop it.
- 1:05:28SPEAKER_03: Take a pinch enjoy the moment.
- 1:05:30SPEAKER_03: Yes, look at the fireworks, see that they're pretty.
- 1:05:33SPEAKER_06: Take in other people know what fireworks are.
- 1:05:35SPEAKER_06: Uh, trust me.
- 1:05:36SPEAKER_03: Don't don't watch them through your phone, please.
- 1:05:38SPEAKER_03: Everybody's seeing the same thing you are.
- 1:05:41SPEAKER_03: But uh no, my song of the week is um uh Cody Johnson did a version of Traveling Soldier by the by the chicks.
- 1:05:49SPEAKER_03: It's a really good jam.
- 1:05:50SPEAKER_03: The chicks they're the chicks now, they're not the chicks anymore.
- 1:05:54SPEAKER_03: Not like Lady A, they're just Lady A.
- 1:05:56SPEAKER_03: Just Lady A.
- 1:05:57SPEAKER_03: So uh no, Cody Johnson did a did a Version of traveling soldier that's really, really good.
- 1:06:02SPEAKER_03: Um, it's uh I like seeing uh because I think the song is spoken from a woman's perspective, and I think he twists he might twist it or he might keep it the same.
- 1:06:12SPEAKER_03: I don't know, but he was it was really good just hearing you know, he's got a really unique, kind of deep voice to it.
- 1:06:19SPEAKER_03: Um, it's just it's just a good song, man.
- 1:06:21SPEAKER_03: Go check it out.
- 1:06:22SPEAKER_03: Cody Johnson, traveling soldier.
- 1:06:37SPEAKER_06: Absolutely, man.
- 1:06:38SPEAKER_06: Definitely got uh Texas songwriting roots with that one.
- 1:06:40SPEAKER_06: It's written by Bruce Robson, who's a Texas artist himself.
- 1:06:43SPEAKER_06: So it's it's a great song, great, great, great lyricism.
- 1:06:47SPEAKER_06: And obviously, just because you write a song doesn't mean that it's has to be from your point of view.
- 1:06:50SPEAKER_06: So it's it's it's a great one.
- 1:06:52SPEAKER_03: No doubt, but that is gonna do it.
- 1:06:55SPEAKER_03: It was good to hop in the studio with you, man.
- 1:06:56SPEAKER_06: It was, man.
- 1:06:57SPEAKER_06: I'm glad we had some content to talk about.
- 1:07:00SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's it's good and bad content, you know.
- 1:07:03SPEAKER_03: It is as a as a Texas Tech fan.
- 1:07:05SPEAKER_03: So hopefully, once uh football season gets into you know, I think we're officially 60 days out at this point, uh, so not too long.
- 1:07:13SPEAKER_03: And that means what 60, that means 60 days from your wedding, dude.
- 1:07:16SPEAKER_03: How you feel?
- 1:07:17SPEAKER_06: Yes, that's true, that's true, man.
- 1:07:20SPEAKER_06: I'm sorry that uh we can't watch Joey's uh debut because it's at seven o'clock somehow.
- 1:07:25SPEAKER_06: I was hoping the boys would be able to just uh hop in the uh groom ready room and watch it over some uh cold ones, but unfortunately, we'll be on the dance floor instead.
- 1:07:34SPEAKER_06: I'll just have the DJ make sure he gives us updates.
- 1:07:36SPEAKER_03: Yeah, good move, good move.
- 1:07:38SPEAKER_03: I'll be looking at my phone pretty much the whole time.
- 1:07:40SPEAKER_03: So I I I'm not worried about the Murray State game.
- 1:07:43SPEAKER_03: Uh neither am I.
- 1:07:44SPEAKER_03: We've said that in the past about FCS teams, but no we built different.
- 1:07:48SPEAKER_03: We are no longer coached by Matt Wells.
- 1:07:51SPEAKER_03: So yes, uh hopefully it turns out pretty good.
