Latest / The 3-0 Take / Farewell, Angel Hernandez
Transcript
- 0:00Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the Three.
- 0:03O take where we talk all things Major League Baseball.
- 0:06Here's Kyle Corwin and Nate Reyes.
- 0:10It all starts right now. Welcome back to the three at
- 0:16Take presented by IC Kick. This is episode 437.
- 0:21I'll be your host, Kyle Cord, and I'm here with my Co host
- 0:24Nate Reyes. Night.
- 0:32You know, I was thinking just now during our countdown, how
- 0:36fitting is it that that our Angel Hernandez episode didn't
- 0:44go as planned the first time around?
- 0:46How about that? Now we're having to do it again.
- 0:48It was weird. This is awfully fitting.
- 0:52You know, you could say we. Blunder.
- 0:55Yeah, you could say we got it wrong.
- 0:57Yeah, yeah, Yep. Still don't know what that was.
- 1:00By the way, I. Don't Yep.
- 1:02Could say we got it wrong yeah I I don't know.
- 1:04We were about 10-15 minutes in then all of a sudden couldn't
- 1:09hear Nate. I missed the days when we just
- 1:12recorded podcast episodes and we didn't have to worry about it
- 1:16happening live. I.
- 1:17Was gonna say, I mean 437 episodes and we're still dealing
- 1:24with this one and two. It makes me not miss that like
- 1:29this used to happen every other episode for like the first 100
- 1:35and 5200. Maybe by episode 1000 it'll be.
- 1:40Maybe. Maybe.
- 1:42Every three episodes. Yeah, probably not.
- 1:46Well, I mean, not to rehash everything we talked about the
- 1:49first take, but it is a big day in baseball history.
- 1:54May 29th. I know you saw my tweets, but
- 2:00turns out in addition to the things that I I made note of
- 2:04today, which I'll run through here real quick.
- 2:06We got more. Well, just seconds before we
- 2:10hopped on we we found out that it was a a big day for a a
- 2:15former utility man who apparently doing something
- 2:21special stuff these days. But May 29th, man, let's let's
- 2:25run through it here real quick. 1982 Cal Ripken sits for the
- 2:29last time before he begins his streak of 2632 consecutive
- 2:33games. 1990 Ricky Henderson breaks a 62 year old American
- 2:39League stolen bases record. 1995 Derek Jeter makes his debut.
- 2:442010 Roy Holiday perfect game. 2010 Also the infamous Kendrick
- 2:52Morales ankle break on the home run, the walk off trot, crossing
- 2:58home plate. Just a terrible day.
- 3:03And then 2017, the Bryce Harper Hunter Strickland brawl, the
- 3:08infamous helmet throw, and as I mentioned on our first take,
- 3:14seven years to the day he gets thrown at and the benches are
- 3:21cleared in San Francisco. That's so weird.
- 3:32That's super weird. Super strange.
- 3:36Did you watch it though? I did and.
- 3:40I didn't see anything there. No, no intention.
- 3:44No. A rookie.
- 3:45A rookie messing with the Hall of Famer?
- 3:49I don't think so. Now, no intention there, I
- 3:52wouldn't think, but you know. Maybe he's just, maybe he knew.
- 3:57Maybe he woke up today and he's like, man, I hate this day.
- 4:00He probably saw my tweet. He's like, well, that's.
- 4:02For sure, yeah. The odds of me starting on the
- 4:05anniversary of this day ever again are probably pretty slim,
- 4:09so got to make the most of it and decided to give give Bryce a
- 4:14little chin music. Angel Hernandez.
- 4:24Let's get some claps. Get some.
- 4:26Claps No, no, no. I want to celebrate.
- 4:28This Hold on, hold on. I got ahead of myself here.
- 4:30I, I alluded to it. We didn't even talk about it.
- 4:33This David Fletcher thing real quick.
- 4:34Oh, yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 4:38Is is he a future Major League knuckleballer now?
- 4:42Is. That I didn't realize this was
- 4:44the the move here. Is that where we're headed?
- 4:48I didn't know this was the thing.
- 4:49I didn't I, I knew that he was in the in the Braves
- 4:54organization, right? But like, I didn't.
- 4:57Know I didn't. Know this is what he was doing
- 5:00now. David Fletcher, last I checked,
- 5:04is through five against Norfolk. He actually, he struck out
- 5:08Jackson Holiday. So do with that information what
- 5:12you will. Honestly, when I saw that, I was
- 5:17like, I know this might be some sort of stunt.
- 5:23I don't know. But I don't know if Jackson's in
- 5:27real in any sort of place to be messing around with with the
- 5:32whole gimmicks. I think he needs to he needs to
- 5:35continue turning it around. And this was an I'll timed PR
- 5:40stunt from Gwinnett. Unless, again, unless this is
- 5:44like a. Unless this is a thing like.
- 5:46Is this what he's trying to do now?
- 5:49I didn't know is he like why is he allowed to play?
- 5:54Like we were talking about this off air.
- 5:55I isn't he under investigation? Shouldn't he be under
- 6:03investigation? Even if he's not, the optics of
- 6:06it aren't great. And maybe just have him sit out
- 6:10for a little while, who knows. Who knows.
- 6:13But yeah, he's through. Last I checked he's through five
- 6:16and he's only given up two runs. Six KS, six case.
- 6:28Oh, for real? Oh yeah, Now that looks like
- 6:32the. That looks like the final line.
- 6:335 innings pitch. Three hits, two runs, a walk in
- 6:36six case you. Got to watch the pitch.
- 6:38Count on Knuckerballers, you know that's the thing.
- 6:43What a what an outing. What an outing.
- 6:46Angel Hernandez. All right, let's get to it.
- 6:47Angel, the headliner for episode.
- 6:54What episode is this, 437? This was a day we had been
- 7:02waiting for. This was a day that all of
- 7:04baseball fans were waiting for. I need to know more.
- 7:10I need more. I need the T we I need the T of.
- 7:13What's happening here? We didn't get the build up that
- 7:17I think we would have wanted. There was no announcement like,
- 7:20hey, I'm retiring at the end of the year.
- 7:23Hey, at least that I was aware of there.
- 7:27Maybe he did say something because again, he's been out.
- 7:32Well, he hasn't umped since May 9th.
- 7:36So maybe maybe something was said publicly, but I would
- 7:41imagine we would have caught the wind of that.
- 7:44But he just, he just drops his bomb on us from the clouds and
- 7:48it's like, this is great. See ya.
- 7:51But we didn't get an opportunity to to really celebrate the build
- 7:55up. This is going to sound terrible.
- 7:58Please don't judge me here. You know when you're watching
- 8:02ATV show or a movie and the bad guy, you hate the bad guy and
- 8:10you're like, something is eventually going to need to
- 8:13happen to this bad guy. Does he die?
- 8:17Does he lose his powers? Whatever happens.
- 8:20But you're like rooting for this downfall.
- 8:22And then when it happens, there's like this satisfaction
- 8:26that you get. I still need more satisfaction.
- 8:32I'm not satisfied with how this ended.
- 8:34I mean, what? I can't explain it.
- 8:38What left is there? Do you want him to get hit by a
- 8:40bus? I don't know.
- 8:42I needed, I needed some. Well, the answer to that
- 8:44question. Should be unequivocally no, but
- 8:46it's. Should have been, but should
- 8:50have been. But you know, we're moving on
- 8:51now. I mean, best case scenario,
- 8:53what, what, what will give you the closure that you're looking
- 8:57for on this Angel Hernandez retirement news?
- 9:02I need fired. I needed fired.
- 9:05That's what I meant I. Needed you.
- 9:08You have been removed from your position and I understand I the
- 9:13whole like, you know, umpire union thing can happen, they're
- 9:17untouchable, blah, blah, blah. I just needed something there.
- 9:23I needed like a trial or or I needed something to wear.
- 9:31The bad guy going down was everything that we were hoping
- 9:37for. Rap.
- 9:41He's gone, but like. Well, he wasn't.
- 9:44He wasn't fired. He wasn't kicked out of the
- 9:47league. His lawyer confirmed as much.
- 9:50I think the best you're going to get is that someday down the
- 9:54road there's going to be some leaked e-mail thread or some
- 9:58leaked recording of a conversation behind closed doors
- 10:01with the league talking about how just pay this guy off and
- 10:06get him out of here. That's probably as good as
- 10:08you're going to get. Did you notice because you you
- 10:12said there's a settlement involved?
- 10:14Yeah. Yeah, it's fuzzy.
- 10:16They reached a settlement. My personal belief is that that
- 10:22is kind of what happened, that they were just like, all right,
- 10:26Angel, this has gone on long enough.
- 10:29Let's agree on a number here, and you can you can get out of
- 10:32town. What I'm just, I don't know, I
- 10:39don't understand the full process, you know, but did you
- 10:46notice on MLB Network like the day it happened, no one really
- 10:51like MLB Central barely touched it, barely touched it like MLB
- 10:59Central like and and you know, they they are typically the ones
- 11:02that can talk a little more freely than like a like a
- 11:08typical, I don't know. What's the MLB now is the Brian
- 11:11Kenny one right? What's the other one?
- 11:14Oh, you're saying like like like specific shows within MLB
- 11:18Network? I like MLB Central yeah, yeah,
- 11:20yeah one of those where like it's a little more loose if.
- 11:23Yeah, a little more fast and loose with their.
- 11:25No comments, dude, No comments, no comments.
- 11:30Like there was nothing. I think Lauren Shahadi, like,
- 11:33read off that tweet and then they just moved on.
- 11:36And I was like, is that a part of the settlement?
- 11:39Like, no, no slander on MLB Network or something like that.
- 11:43I mean, there's enough slander on social media.
- 11:45There's enough. Are we?
- 11:48Going to get into that. Let's get into some farewells.
- 11:53Farewell. On well, let's let's let's give
- 11:57him his due. Let let's read.
- 11:59I'm going to read off his statement here real quick
- 12:00because, you know, got to send him off in in his own words, and
- 12:04then we'll get into the words of our of our are dear followers,
- 12:08who I'm sure I I haven't even read pretty.
- 12:11I haven't read really any of them and I'm sure.
- 12:14It's the most vague statement too.
- 12:16I'm sure our fans are just going to send them off with the
- 12:20greatest respect. Yeah, Andrew Hernandez
- 12:25retirement statement. Starting with my first Major
- 12:27League game in 1991, I've had the very good experience of
- 12:31living out my childhood dream of umpiring in the major leagues.
- 12:34There's nothing better than working at a profession that you
- 12:37enjoy. I treasure the camaraderie of my
- 12:39colleagues and the friendships I have made along the way,
- 12:43including our locker room attendance in all of the various
- 12:45cities. I decided that I want to spend
- 12:49more time with my family. Needless to say, there have been
- 12:52many positive changes in the game of baseball since I first
- 12:55entered the profession. This includes the expansion and
- 12:57promotion of minorities. I'm proud that I was able to be
- 13:01an active participant in that goal while being a Major League
- 13:04umpire. Whatever.
- 13:15Whatever, dude. Why even start the season?
- 13:19Why? Like yeah, I think he was forced
- 13:25out and I I just need a documentary on it.
- 13:27I need more tea. I need to know where the truth
- 13:32lies. That's what I'm saying.
- 13:33I think the league probably starting this year, they're
- 13:37like, all right, let's give this another go.
- 13:39And it maybe just got to the point where it's so bad and I
- 13:43have to think that this plays into, I'm not saying it's a
- 13:46conspiracy, but I have to think that this whole thing that I've
- 13:49been pushing, I won't loop you into it, but personally I've
- 13:52been pushing of this whole like conspiracy umpire thing.
- 13:56Like there, this has to play into it in some.
- 13:59Facet to you're saying like being so bad that they're going
- 14:03to force the issue for automated strike zone, not the conspiracy.
- 14:10No, I'm just saying it. It's just convenient that the
- 14:14Angel Hernandez retirement comes in the midst of all of this.
- 14:20Again, I think it's a conspiracy going on that these umpires are
- 14:24somehow almost being paid off to be as bad as they are.
- 14:28I don't fully disagree here. I I'm just saying, I think that
- 14:34I, I don't know, I can't make sense of it, but I'm just saying
- 14:37it's very, it's very interesting that I feel like umpires are as
- 14:40bad as they've ever been. And then all of a sudden we get
- 14:43out of the blue, we get an Angel Hernandez firing.
- 14:46I, I couldn't tell you. I don't maybe they're going all
- 14:51right, let's get one of the worst out of the league.
- 14:55And then if, if the casual baseball fan thinks that the,
- 14:59the guys that are left who are like at least respectable, if
- 15:02they're as bad as they are, then we have a little bit more
- 15:04credibility. I don't I don't credibility in
- 15:07terms of this, this conspiracy or or ushering in robo.
- 15:14I don't know it. There's a lot there's a lot up
- 15:16in the air with that and I'm not going to sit here and act like
- 15:20it's set in stone. Just a conspiracy.
- 15:22That's all. Understandable.
- 15:25Let's get into some farewell statements.
- 15:27So as I mentioned, I haven't even I haven't I haven't cleared
- 15:32these have not pre approved any of these.
- 15:35I did say I was going to read off the best, but frankly.
- 15:39They're all good. They're all great and I, I, I
- 15:42won't be able to get to all of them.
- 15:43There was over 400 on Facebook. There was, there was more on
- 15:48Instagram. People are dropping it in the
- 15:50stories. All in all, there's probably
- 15:54close to 500 farewell notes that people left.
- 15:58So love that. Not surprised.
- 16:00But Facebook, I figured, was probably going to be the most
- 16:03entertaining because, as we know, face baseball fans on
- 16:07Facebook are a little rational. Starting from the top here.
- 16:13What do we got? All right, Mike says happy
- 16:18retirement. No one is going to challenge
- 16:20this call. Frank says May 27th should be
- 16:23called Angel Hernandez Day. No one saw that.
- 16:29Tiffany says no one saw this coming, especially Angel.
- 16:33Andrea said first standing ovation he'll have in his entire
- 16:37career. Oh, somebody made a I've always
- 16:44considered myself a man of faith.
- 16:45Nick Casianos joke. Sure, there's you always got to
- 16:50throw one of those in there. Let's see take TB Buckner with
- 16:59him. True, He planned a that was
- 17:03Joseph Wayne says he planned a retirement trip with his wife
- 17:06but missed it. That's good, Frank said.
- 17:14I'm just glad they let him have the job given his clear
- 17:16disabilities. That's terrible.
- 17:18That's that's so bad. I didn't say it.
- 17:23It was it was Frank. I didn't say that.
- 17:26I love it, Frank. All right, Nick, Nick says
- 17:32calling games is hard, especially at that level.
- 17:34Enjoy the well earned retirement.
- 17:37Well earned? I don't know about that.
- 17:41What are we? Just because somebody, just
- 17:43because somebody sticks around for a long time doesn't mean
- 17:46they're good. Yeah, read the room, Nick read.
- 17:49The Room. Or just watch.
- 17:51You just watch baseball. Cam says hope you enjoy your
- 17:57time outside. Fart away, just like all your
- 17:59strike calls. Let's see at the, Tom says.
- 18:12At the end of the day, he was just an umpire in a sport.
- 18:15I'll give him the benefit that doubt and say that he did his
- 18:19best, even if it wasn't very good.
- 18:23You know, this brings up a fair argument because it's like the
- 18:27guy's stunk, the guy's terrible, but like, who?
- 18:31Who is it on? You know what I mean?
- 18:33When you see a child in in the grocery store acting a fool,
- 18:38you're like, you know what? Those are some terrible parents.
- 18:41Like you can't help but go there.
- 18:43Like, at what point are we going to blame, like the someone above
- 18:47making decisions, the league, the union, like this needed to
- 18:51end and it did. But yeah, he's terrible.
- 18:58Yellow fleece on Instagram said I know you can't see what the
- 19:01future holds, but good luck. Some positivity.
- 19:08Nathan said, well, it was a little more it was a little more
- 19:10expletive lace, but I I took the cleaner out.
- 19:13Nathan said you suck, never call a game again.
- 19:17Venture to say he won't be. I mean, if you're Angel
- 19:20Hernandez, you don't go to any other like level of, of
- 19:23umpiring, right? That there would be no reason to
- 19:27do that. I really, really look forward to
- 19:30the day that he just attends another ball game and they find
- 19:35him. They put him on camera and
- 19:3850,000 just let it eat. Just rain booze down.
- 19:45That's what I would that that would satisfy me.
- 19:49That's the villain going down. Gary asked.
- 19:54How the heck did you keep your job over the last 30 years
- 19:56despite being one of the worst umpires in the sport?
- 19:59It's a valid question. Jason says I hope you go
- 20:04quietly. Like a fart in the wind.
- 20:06Your stench will always linger, sweet Angel.
- 20:13Ah, yes, that's. A lot of people in here talking
- 20:18about the corrective eye surgery, making those jokes.
- 20:21Did you see that? Yes dude, they lasik lasik spam
- 20:26the. Spam.
- 20:27That's so. Crap out of the the Angel tweets
- 20:30and the Angel post. It was unreal.
- 20:33Think it was. I gotta give the nod.
- 20:35I think it was John Boy that was like, this is a marketing scheme
- 20:39that's going to go down in textbooks, like.
- 20:40Yeah. They're going to talk about this
- 20:41in textbooks years from now. It was so good.
- 20:45They I'm. I'm genuinely starting to wonder
- 20:49if LASIK wasn't founded for this very moment.
- 20:53Like, yeah, sure, they do the LASIK surgeries and all that
- 20:56stuff, but they were waiting for this moment because they were
- 20:59ready. I they always talk about take
- 21:02advantage of the opportunity when it's given to you.
- 21:05They took advantage. They were ready.
- 21:07Did you, do you ever, do you remember as a kid like the MC
- 21:10Hammer commercials where he did something for like like a
- 21:14financial company and he like played on the fact that he was
- 21:18broke, like he went bankrupt? Yes, yes.
- 21:21Do you remember that? I think there's an opportunity
- 21:25here for Angel Turn into the skid, partner with LASIK, go do
- 21:29some commercials. It was too late for me, but it's
- 21:34not too late for you. You know, a little something
- 21:38there. Just a thought.
- 21:40There's so many puns to be had there.
- 21:43I mean come on Angel, this is this is your moment.
- 21:47This is your 1 shining moment. I will say that he it seemed
- 21:52like he, I've never saw the guy lose his cool.
- 21:56I I think there was just this blank stare of cluelessness
- 22:00anytime someone got in his face. Whereas like Las Diaz, CB
- 22:06Buckner, they'll fire back, man, if a manager gets in their face
- 22:11or player gets in their face, they'll just, they'll fire back
- 22:14and I'm like, you're firing back and you're wrong.
- 22:17That's bad. I'll give I'll give a little pat
- 22:20on the back for Angel. He just kind of ate it.
- 22:24Whether it was intentional or just ignorant bliss.
- 22:28He that's what I'm saying, I. Gotta give it to him.
- 22:30He he wore it like a champ. Yeah, I I don't get it.
- 22:34And I saw that video recirculated recently where he
- 22:40he stopped to sign that ball for that one guy.
- 22:43Yeah, yeah, yeah. As they're like walking out of
- 22:45the park, I'm like, he's wearing like a champ.
- 22:48He's he's signing autographs, whether it was sarcastically or
- 22:54not. I saw on Twitter CC Sabathia
- 22:58responded to like someone tweeting out his like post game
- 23:02presser talking about like in a game he pitched in and Angel was
- 23:07wanting to play and he just talked about how horrible he was
- 23:10and he had responded to this being dug up again with the with
- 23:14the Looney Tunes. That's all folks GIF.
- 23:19I love it. I love the pettiness.
- 23:21I'm here for it. Tim said you can rest assured we
- 23:25don't even need to go to the booth in New York for this call.
- 23:28Yeah, adios. I love it.
- 23:39Yeah, there's some vulgar ones in here.
- 23:40We need to, my good man people. I tell you what man, I.
- 23:45Hate it dude. Facebook is like it's turning
- 23:47in. There, Facebook is a jungle.
- 23:50Yeah, didn't start out that way. Thanks a lot, Zuckerberg.
- 23:57Yeah, I, I will say though, there there's a lacking of
- 24:00creativity with some of these comments.
- 24:02It's like, OK, we've we we get them.
- 24:05Well, I tried to call him to congratulate him, but he missed
- 24:07the call. OK, that joke.
- 24:10Come up with something else that's.
- 24:11What Facebook is, baby, that's what it.
- 24:13Come up with something else. Thrives, thrives.
- 24:16The amount of Facebook videos I get from my parents that are
- 24:19videos that are like three or four years old.
- 24:22My dad just sent me one of like the, the, the T-ball where kid
- 24:26hits it and it's just chaos all over the place.
- 24:28I'm like, Dad, I saw this. Years ago or the one of the kid
- 24:33where he's like super slow super.
- 24:37Slow. That's exactly that.
- 24:38She's like, this is so good. I'm like.
- 24:40That's a classic. Or when the kid, the dad said
- 24:45that he couldn't get the kid his bat for his birthday.
- 24:47He opens up the trunk, the trunk of the white van, and he starts
- 24:51crying. Another classic.
- 24:53Yeah. That kid's like that kid's 25
- 24:55now. He's got his own kid.
- 24:56The kids probably making his debut, like, right now in the
- 24:58big leagues, if if we're being honest.
- 25:01All right. Any other thoughts on the Angel
- 25:03Hernandez? Situation.
- 25:07Who's now? Who's now the worst?
- 25:10Who takes the crown? For me, it's last Diaz.
- 25:15Yeah, I was going to say I have AI have an exceptional bias
- 25:19against him for what he did to the 2021 Boston Red Sox and the
- 25:23ALCS, but. For me it's last Diaz and you
- 25:27can always tell with how bad the strike three call is.
- 25:30His is his is bad. Speaking of my favorite Aaron
- 25:35Boone moment, it's not even close.
- 25:38Yeah, that's that's top tier. That's top tier.
- 25:40Speaking of strike three, I I will say that Angel Hernandez
- 25:45did leave us with a a good moment or two before he left
- 25:49this year because wasn't it was just like, was it last week, a
- 25:54couple weeks ago with the three balls.
- 25:56The Wyatt Langford at bat, Yeah, yeah, like 3 sliders, all all
- 26:01very off the plate. Multiple baseballs off of the
- 26:04plate, Three up three. What was it?
- 26:083 pitches, Three straight it. Was three Yeah.
- 26:10And why? It's just like I OK.
- 26:12Why even bother? Why even bother?
- 26:14Yeah, Guy stinks. Yeah.
- 26:17I don't. I don't really feel bad.
- 26:20Like the whole, honestly, if he would have worn it like we were
- 26:23talking about for his career the way that he did and he was just
- 26:27like bad. It's the it's the lawsuit for
- 26:30not. It's the lawsuit, it's the, it's
- 26:32the creating a narrative against himself where it's like, no,
- 26:36dude, you're just bad at your job.
- 26:39You're you're not just bad at your job.
- 26:42You're horrible and people they're saying well, he's not
- 26:48the he's not the he's not the worst.
- 26:51I thought I had a note here. Yeah, this.
- 26:55Well, this year and we're again 22 plus months into the season,
- 26:59he ranked 67th out of 8085 umpires incorrect call rate this
- 27:04year near the end of last year he was dead last so.
- 27:10You see on that trajectory, you know what I mean?
- 27:12Like he had. He was getting there, yeah.
- 27:14You knew he was just going to keep sliding this year.
- 27:16Just just gave the rest of the league or the rest of the
- 27:18umpires a head start, that's all.
- 27:21Yeah, overall, like on all seriousness, I, I would, I, I
- 27:25think I would just appreciate a little bit more clarity with
- 27:30how, how they're graded, what can be done if they fail over
- 27:39and over and over. Like I just, I think I want the
- 27:42league to be more clear on what's necessary.
- 27:48What are the, what kind of threshold are we needing to stay
- 27:50above to stay active and like the punishment of not getting
- 27:56post season games. I just, I don't know if it's
- 27:59enough for like fit a fan base to wrap their mind around.
- 28:04I just need a little more clarity.
- 28:06And by the way, I don't know if if you're on Twitter and if you,
- 28:10if you follow that MLB scorecard account, Great, great account.
- 28:16They do a little report card after each, after each game,
- 28:19literally every game. And it's it's good.
- 28:22That's a good account to follow. But yeah, just need more
- 28:25clarity, man. Just like I know it's not a part
- 28:29of the CBA because they have their own CBA with MLB.
- 28:34The MLBPA isn't a part of that mix.
- 28:36But I just, I want a little bit more like, I don't know.
- 28:42Clarity is kindness. Yeah, I think that's just a
- 28:45kindness. Yeah, a Safeway to say it.
- 28:50Let's talk about the Negro League stats official today as
- 28:55of today. And I confirmed I I went on
- 28:59Baseball reference went on MLB.com slash stats confirmed
- 29:04both the Negro leagues stats have officially been integrated
- 29:10into that of Major League baseballs.
- 29:15And can I just say like real quick, can everybody just calm
- 29:20down about all of this? And I'm not saying like if
- 29:23you're excited about it or if you, if you think it's good, I'm
- 29:25just saying like collectively, like, can we just talk about
- 29:29this for what it is and not make this such a like societally
- 29:36charged issue? Like, can we let's just talk
- 29:38about how some dudes that played many, many years ago are finally
- 29:44getting their shine. All right?
- 29:45They're finally getting their recognition.
- 29:48I saw some nasty stuff today, man.
- 29:51And I texted you and I was like, I, I'm exhausted just reading
- 29:56through some of these comments because it's not, it wasn't even
- 29:59about the, the, the matter at hand.
- 30:02It was just, people were just going so far off the rails.
- 30:04And I know that that happens with any subject these days that
- 30:08has two or more sides to it. But I'm like, we're not even
- 30:14talking anymore about this, the statistics being integrated.
- 30:18We're talking about things that aren't even relevant to this.
- 30:21And it's taken away from the, the movement that that this is.
- 30:29And you know, I don't know, a common theme that I saw and that
- 30:38I've been encountering in in response to all of this is that,
- 30:43well, how can you integrate the, the Negro League stats?
- 30:48How can you say that these are Major League Baseball stats when
- 30:51it wasn't Major League Baseball? And look, I myself am asking the
- 30:58same question, but maybe not for the reasons that you want to
- 31:01like jump to conclusions with, OK.
- 31:05Do I think that that the guys that played during the Negro
- 31:10League era were incredible baseball talents?
- 31:13Absolutely. Do I think they should?
- 31:16They're deserving of the spotlight for their
- 31:21accomplishments and let's let's call it what it is, a very
- 31:28challenging time to play baseball or really to just
- 31:33exist. Like they had to go through hell
- 31:36and back. I would imagine at that time
- 31:39very challenging. But just looking at it from a
- 31:42baseball statistical perspective, I had to ask the
- 31:47question like, they're two, they're two separate.
- 31:54There were two separate leagues. Is that unfortunate?
- 31:56Absolutely. Like would you have in an ideal
- 31:59world, would you wanted, would you have wanted guys like Josh
- 32:04Gibson, Satchel Paige to be playing alongside of of the guys
- 32:08in Major League Baseball the entire time?
- 32:10Absolutely. We missed out.
- 32:12We weren't alive obviously, during that strip that, that
- 32:15era, but I can guarantee without ever having lived in that era
- 32:20that we missed out on the we as in the baseball world missed out
- 32:23on some pretty great baseball because of that division that
- 32:27existed. And, and something that I've
- 32:32seen a lot of a lot of people say is, well, if we're going to
- 32:36integrate the Negro Leagues, then are we going to does that
- 32:40mean we're going to integrate Japanese baseball too?
- 32:45And then the people that are a common response assault of that
- 32:48was, well, it's not in America, so it doesn't matter.
- 32:52And I'm going yeah, but like, it's still a different league,
- 33:01though. It's still a different league.
- 33:04And I know it's a, it's a very difficult topic to navigate
- 33:09because again, I, I absolutely want guys like Josh Gibson and,
- 33:16and company to get the credit that they deserve.
- 33:19They were incredible baseball players.
- 33:22But it's just hard for me to group the OR to label the
- 33:30statistics that they accumulated as Major League Baseball stats
- 33:34when they never played Major League Baseball.
- 33:37Yeah. And, and the people that say,
- 33:40well, I've, I've, I've seen this report reference so many times
- 33:44today, it's from this article, it said.
- 33:48A special committee on baseball records decided in 1969 to
- 33:52recognize six major leagues dating to 1876.
- 33:56The National, which launched in 1876, the American 19 O1, the
- 34:00American Association 1882, the Union Association, the Players
- 34:05League and Federal League. And they're saying, well, those
- 34:10weren't Major League organizations and they're
- 34:13included in Major League stats. I'm, I disagree with that too.
- 34:17Like it's not just because this is like a Negro leagues thing
- 34:20versus like leagues elsewhere. This is just like a Major League
- 34:24Baseball versus everything else. Like is, again, is it
- 34:28unfortunate that we had that division in the 1st place?
- 34:31Yes. But it it just doesn't.
- 34:35I I don't know. I don't know.
- 34:37It just doesn't make sense to me to you have a league that's
- 34:40quite literally named something completely different now grouped
- 34:44in with Major League Baseball. Yeah.
- 34:47I don't know. It's it's, it's tough.
- 34:49I think I feel similarly the the the other comparison I keep
- 34:54hearing is that like, would you mix like the ABA stats with the
- 34:59NBA? And it's like, it's just it,
- 35:02it's it's it didn't exist. You know what I mean?
- 35:07Like it, it's hard to say. And I'm not, I'm not going to
- 35:11sit here and say like, Josh Gibson wouldn't be the OPS or
- 35:15average leader if if you got an opportunity to play in the MLB.
- 35:21I'm not saying that, you know, Satchel Paige wouldn't be that
- 35:26kind of leader in in major pitching stats or categories.
- 35:31I'm just saying that like it it didn't happen.
- 35:33So it's kind of hard for us to just group it into one and just
- 35:41say, hey, like we're going to have that conversation of Josh
- 35:47Gibson is now the greatest baseball player in Major League
- 35:51Baseball history when it wasn't Major League Baseball.
- 35:54It's just, it's hard to, it's hard to navigate that.
- 35:56And, and like if we remove the obvious divisive hot topics of
- 36:06race and things like that, like if we remove that aspect of it,
- 36:12I, I, I think a lot more people would agree.
- 36:19But at the same time, it's like I am excited that they're
- 36:24getting like, I am excited that there's people learning Josh
- 36:28Gibson's name today for sure. You know, like, I am excited
- 36:32that baseball as a whole has like has grown and potentially
- 36:41received more exposure for the news.
- 36:45You know what I mean? Like there's, there's plenty of
- 36:49positives to take out of this for the game of baseball.
- 36:54And I don't know if there's a right or wrong decision.
- 36:57I think it's just it is difficult to rewrite history.
- 37:02You know, it's difficult to to Fast forward 30-40 years down
- 37:07the road and and look back and say like, well, the Negro League
- 37:11did exist, but now those stats are combined.
- 37:15I just, I don't know. I don't know if there's a right
- 37:18or wrong way, but it is just interesting, you know, 'cause
- 37:25it's like they didn't play Major League Baseball, but we're going
- 37:29to consider them statistical leaders of Major League
- 37:36Baseball. It's been around a while, you
- 37:38know, it's. And, and the commentary, the
- 37:40commentary surrounding that point, I, I saw a lot of today
- 37:44and just browsing different forms and, and what have you is
- 37:49that, and it, it's a valid, it's a valid point where people say,
- 37:55well, it wasn't a talent barrier, it was a racial
- 38:00barrier. But that again goes back to my
- 38:03point of is it unfortunate? Is it unfair that there was this
- 38:10division that that existed that kept that, I mean, call it what
- 38:14it is, racism, hatred that kept them out of the league and and
- 38:19kept them from an opportunity to play Major League Baseball?
- 38:22Absolutely. But it doesn't it like, I'm
- 38:29sorry, like if you have mean things to say to me for this
- 38:33take, you can go ahead and, and, and reach out to me and, and
- 38:37share those thoughts. It's just really hard for me to
- 38:42sit here and, and try to fathom or, or understand how a league
- 38:46that existed outside of Major League Baseball is now having
- 38:51its data compiled with that of Major League baseballs when they
- 38:58were two separate leagues. I, I don't know.
- 39:03It's again, a love like you made you made a great point, a love
- 39:09that so many people now are learning about some of these
- 39:12guys that otherwise may not have gotten the recognition they
- 39:17deserved. A number of these guys have
- 39:19since made the the Hall of Fame and and we know that, but I
- 39:25just, it just begs the question like was, is there a different
- 39:30way that that recognition could have been achieved without, I
- 39:36mean, rewriting history? I don't know.
- 39:39It's, it's a, it's a challenging topic to navigate.
- 39:43I'll, I'll say that much. And I, I will say I, I think
- 39:46there was people on both sides at the top of the matter that
- 39:50whether they agreed or disagreed were rushing to conclusions and,
- 39:55and jumping into the discourse without thinking about it very
- 39:58like critically, they were just sticking to, to 11 talking point
- 40:04on one side or the other. And it just didn't make for very
- 40:07good. Very wholesome discourse today.
- 40:11Yeah, yeah. And you're right.
- 40:13I think it did take away in many ways what the what the whole
- 40:19point of it was. You know, it's it's kind of
- 40:23tarnished slightly, but it's done now, you know what I mean?
- 40:30Like this is what it is now. Like we we now have a new
- 40:33leader. And was it so Josh Gibson took
- 40:37over OPS, which like, let's let's face it, what?
- 40:42No one's really paid attention to OPS and until like the last
- 40:45five years. So I don't think anyone was like
- 40:49ready to list the number one all time leader of OPS from.
- 40:54Yeah, years ago he took over average.
- 40:58Average Yeah took over Ty Cobb's title. 372 is what I read.
- 41:05Let me just make sure I got it here 370-3373.
- 41:09Goodness, dude. Yeah, but what's interesting,
- 41:14and I'm not, I'm not trying to discredit that, that's that's an
- 41:17amazing career. But it's something that was
- 41:19brought up and it's it's a case by case.
- 41:23It's not like everybody had similar numbers, but he had 2168
- 41:31at bats and I think Ty Cobb was like over 10,000 or something I
- 41:37saw. And so people were that that was
- 41:40one of those points where people were just, they saw that and
- 41:42they ran with it. And I'm like, well, it it's
- 41:44worth noting, but it's not, I'm not going to build my entire
- 41:47argument for or against off of how many at bats a guy, a single
- 41:52guy got when we're talking about an entire league.
- 41:56But yeah, he took over. It was average OPS and was on.
- 42:04The base. Was it on base?
- 42:08Yeah, it was, it was three major categories.
- 42:10But yeah, Josh Gibson was one of the the he was, he was, I would
- 42:17say the face of this, this news as it broke slugging, that's
- 42:24what it was, batting, slugging, OPS.
- 42:27So, yeah, like you said, it's here the and I as I mentioned,
- 42:33the stats are official. They are confirmed they are in
- 42:36you can I'm looking at them right now.
- 42:37You can go check them out on baseball reference.
- 42:39You can check them out on MLB.com.
- 42:44Regardless, agree, disagree. There is a lot to be learned, a
- 42:49lot of history that's, you know, news like this, efforts being
- 42:55made by MLB The Show to incorporate more of the back
- 42:58stories of yeah, stories of guys that we didn't otherwise know
- 43:03about into integrating that into that game and, and the gameplay
- 43:08and the loading screens and all that stuff that I was reading a
- 43:11lot. A lot to be, a lot to be
- 43:13learned. So.
- 43:16I, I, I think, yeah, I don't know if maybe the, the
- 43:21conversation changes or, or comes back or is altered moving
- 43:28forward, but I think like, in many ways, and you mentioned it
- 43:35before of like what they dealt with in, in that time, you know
- 43:40what I mean? And like the, it was just what
- 43:43the time was, you know, it was what life was back then.
- 43:47And what they dealt with, you know, in spite of it is, is to,
- 43:56I think it's, I think it's a big victory in many ways for sure.
- 44:02And, and, and it's OK to have a victory.
- 44:04And it's OK to also be, you know, hard to swallow of like,
- 44:11like you said, like a whole new league coming in that changes
- 44:18the way we look at numbers. And, and that's the biggest
- 44:24thing. Like we're a game of numbers,
- 44:25you know what I mean? Like we're, we can remove all
- 44:29aspects to it. And I mean, our game is, is, you
- 44:35know, right now predominantly Latin, you know, like it's, it's
- 44:38not like we're all sitting here wanting to pull the white card
- 44:44or pull the racial card. I, I think it's just, it's, it's
- 44:47strange just because it's a totally separate league.
- 44:52And I think obviously baseball has changed since integration.
- 45:00And that's why Jackie Robinson has celebrated the way he is
- 45:04because it, it almost was like a here's a new beginning and
- 45:07here's how we proceed. Learning from the past, like you
- 45:14said, it was, it's like it was what it was.
- 45:16No one's happy about it. No one's like, that wasn't great
- 45:20time in history. It's not a proud time in
- 45:22history, but it did happen and it is our history and we are
- 45:26able to learn from it and move forward.
- 45:31So yeah. And who knows, maybe, maybe this
- 45:35sparks new. There's nothing better than than
- 45:39our game in my, in my opinion, across all sports.
- 45:42Like, I don't, I don't think there's any other game that has
- 45:45this type of melting pot of, of culture and maybe this, this
- 45:53grows that aspect even more. Hopefully it does.
- 46:01Well said. Any other thoughts?
- 46:04Got got a couple dudes that I wanna I wanna cover here a few.
- 46:10Actually for me. Few, actually.
- 46:13I'm gonna ask you this before the 2024 season.
- 46:19Actually before, like maybe this week, make it even simpler for
- 46:24you. Had you heard the name Jeremiah
- 46:25Estrada? Before today, no, I said.
- 46:29All out myself. All out myself I.
- 46:31Was going to say I said this week, but you're saying all out
- 46:33myself before today. Nate.
- 46:38He has struck out 13 consecutive batters entering entering
- 46:43Wednesday. It's pretty good.
- 46:48Which, by the way, is a record. And I did.
- 46:51I, I saw that he he celebrated the feat by hitting up in and
- 46:57out after the game. I did.
- 47:00See. He also quoted Talladega Nights
- 47:03in in the Press The post. Conference.
- 47:05Did he really? Post game, he was like, 'cause
- 47:07you saw when you went back out, out of the dugout and there was
- 47:10just like the huge crowd after the game and still giving him
- 47:12some love. He was like, yeah, I kind of
- 47:14felt like kind of felt like Talladega Nights.
- 47:17I didn't know what to do with my hands.
- 47:19It's like, all right, I'm you got a new fan, dude.
- 47:23I love it, man. I mean, talking about that
- 47:28Padres bullpen, though, between Estrada and Suarez, it's
- 47:34disgusting. Combined, they've given up.
- 47:38Well again. Entering Wednesday, they've
- 47:40given up three earned runs and 41 innings pitched, but this
- 47:45strikeout feat is believed to be the longest streak of its kind
- 47:52since at least 1961. It's nuts.
- 47:59That's nuts. I'm trying to figure out nothing
- 48:02against the guy. I'm trying to figure out how.
- 48:08Like what it is What it is that makes it so?
- 48:13I'm I'm like, I'm looking at baseball savant fastball's at
- 48:2096.9. He's a he's a three pitch guy,
- 48:27fastball split slider, not like a crazy.
- 48:36I mean fly ball rate is pretty high.
- 48:39So you'd wonder like, like how does he?
- 48:45I don't know how's he doing this?
- 48:47That's what I'm trying to figure.
- 48:48Like nothing against like obviously he's got good stuff,
- 48:50but I'm like, it's not like ground breaking things.
- 48:55You know what I'm seeing? Like you see Mason Miller with
- 48:57like one O 2 in your face, you know, But like, what is it about
- 49:03this that's making it so hard to hit?
- 49:06Can I interrupt real quick? Sure.
- 49:09Sister-in-law texts me with her weekly trivia.
- 49:12Third trivia. They go to trivia on Wednesdays.
- 49:14Boy, she always hits me up with the baseball question.
- 49:17Says name one of two MLB players to have their numbers retired
- 49:20for the Mets this year. Retired this year.
- 49:24This year, Strawberry, this year, right?
- 49:28Keith Hernandez has been retired for a while, right?
- 49:32That was semi recently. Was strawberry this year?
- 49:40Strawberry Gooden don't cheat. I'm not pretty sure it's
- 49:49strawberry. David Wright.
- 49:55No, we. Would have seen that 10 only you
- 49:59name one. One of two retired from the Mets
- 50:03this year. I'm going.
- 50:03Strawberry. Go strawberry.
- 50:05Yeah, that's fine. Back to your point, what is it
- 50:09that that this guy has? It makes him so special.
- 50:12You can go, I, I did it today. You can go pull up.
- 50:16You can pull up the montage of his 13 consecutive strikeouts.
- 50:19And you tell me, listener or viewer, what you see that makes
- 50:25this makes sense. There's nothing about it that
- 50:28adds up. This might just be one of those
- 50:31scenarios in baseball where it's like, you know, a guy catches a
- 50:35a good, he's riding a, he's riding a hot hand.
- 50:39I use this story all the time, but I remember when I was a kid,
- 50:43I think it was Shelly Duncan came up with the Yankees and he
- 50:49had like a crazy stretch of home runs.
- 50:52I think he had four home runs in his first four games to start
- 50:55his career or whatever. And I would say 90% of the
- 51:01people listening to this don't know who Shelly Duncan is.
- 51:03So I'm not saying Jeremiah Estrada is going to end up that
- 51:08way. But like, yeah, you're right.
- 51:10Sometimes guys just catch this streak and hopefully they do
- 51:15well. But like, last year he threw in
- 51:1612 games. He had a 6-7 ERA, 13 strikeouts,
- 51:2512 games. This year, he's got 28
- 51:26strikeouts. Still doesn't address the fact
- 51:29of like. Why like how this is happening?
- 51:31That's what I'm saying. And he's like, it's a pretty
- 51:33generic motion. There's nothing funky.
- 51:37It's it's right over the top. He's he doesn't really have much
- 51:42that you're going to see on pitching ninja.
- 51:44Like there's just the stuff just isn't I don't know, it's nothing
- 51:52special, but yet he's diced up 13 in a row and they're all
- 51:56swinging by the way. I don't I don't think I
- 51:57mentioned that. That's crazier.
- 51:59Everyone of the 13 has been swinging.
- 52:02That's crazier to me. So there must be something that
- 52:06we're just not seeing, like from our vantage point, from behind
- 52:12there. It must be something that we're
- 52:13just not seeing. Because if you're going down
- 52:15swinging 13 times, like collectively obviously, but
- 52:21you're seeing some something that you like and then when you
- 52:25go to hit it, it's just not there.
- 52:27I can't explain it. I don't understand it.
- 52:34Oh well, good for him. Keep it wrong.
- 52:36Don't. Make no sense.
- 52:39Them colors don't run. He and the other thing to.
- 52:44Another Talladega Night quote. The other thing, the other thing
- 52:48that's that's worth noting is that a handful of these outings
- 52:53over the course of these 13 strikeouts have been over multi
- 52:56inning efforts. Like he he's not just coming out
- 52:59giving you everything he's got for three batters and calling it
- 53:01at night like he's going, he's coming out for a second inning.
- 53:05And it was against a, but this started with a white hot Yankees
- 53:09team, too. Like an offense.
- 53:12Yeah. Oh yeah, That whole line.
- 53:13It was on a tear. Judge is in that mix.
- 53:16Soto's in that mix, I believe. So it's not like he's not, he's
- 53:21not like he's facing some, some scrubs, you know what I mean?
- 53:25Like he's, he's doing his thing. Speaking of doing his thing,
- 53:30Corey Seeger, eight home runs in eight games.
- 53:36I actually had to update my notes because I did this.
- 53:38I, I was, I was pulling my notes together ahead of the, the
- 53:44Rangers game today, Wednesday, and then I, I flipped the
- 53:49Rangers game on and sure enough, who's going deep?
- 53:51Corey Seeger So it was seven and seven games coming into today
- 53:55had updated to 8 entering Wednesday.
- 54:00Didn't didn't get around to fully updating my notes for
- 54:02this, this particular individual.
- 54:07But entering Wednesday, his previous seven games, he was he
- 54:10was hitting 375 with a 500 on base percentage and had 11
- 54:17ribbies. During that seven game stretch,
- 54:22he raised his OPS from 670 to 812.
- 54:28That's gross. That's how do you even do that?
- 54:33Well, hitting seven home runs in seven games, but eight?
- 54:38No, I'm saying during that stretch, like I'm sure I don't
- 54:41even what's his OPS now it's probably higher than 812.
- 54:44But the entering Wednesday, he had raised his OPS from those
- 54:50seven games from 670 to 812. What a dude is this?
- 55:00Is this a guy? I mean, I fuck, I kind of know
- 55:04the answer to this question already.
- 55:05But for a a lackluster American League West and for a semi
- 55:12underwhelming Texas Rangers team, is this the spark that the
- 55:18the team needs to get going? He's kind of the captain, you
- 55:24know what I mean? This is the first big contract
- 55:32that they gave out in a long time.
- 55:34It's the one that they doubled down on.
- 55:36They follered up with with Marcus Simeon.
- 55:39He's the quasi captain in many ways, just deadly in the
- 55:46postseason. We've seen it year over year,
- 55:49especially when he was, you know, with the Dodgers.
- 55:51It's like he, he just, this is what he does.
- 55:54But like you said, dude, that I, I don't know.
- 55:58The AO West has been underwhelming, to put it
- 56:01lightly. The Rangers are only plus one in
- 56:08their run differential this year.
- 56:12He missed some time, didn't he? I think he had a hamstring
- 56:15issue. That sounds right.
- 56:20Yeah. Yeah, he.
- 56:21Hasn't played all year. He did miss time.
- 56:26Yeah, dude. Oh, Captain, my captain, you
- 56:29know what I'm saying? Like when you go, we go.
- 56:32So. Three games back.
- 56:33As it stands right now, I'm looking at it 27 and 29, three
- 56:37games back of the 30 and 26 Mariners. 27 and 29 So what is
- 56:43that? Oh, like game total 50?
- 56:49656 yeah. Oh, so he hasn't missed that
- 56:53much that much time. He's played fifty.
- 56:56Maybe it's just a slow start, but look at him go man.
- 57:02I don't think he gets enough love.
- 57:04I really don't I don't think he gets enough credit.
- 57:08I, I, I think he is a top three short stop in baseball all
- 57:13freaking day all day. We just need to go though.
- 57:19Was his start just that slow that we thought he went to the
- 57:22IO? Did he not?
- 57:25Did he not? I think he.
- 57:27I don't, I, I don't know, maybe he didn't start the season I
- 57:32drafted him in fantasy. He trade him.
- 57:36He left the game early, but that wasn't anything that kept him
- 57:40out. Oh well.
- 57:46By the way, he's he's getting back to Corey Seeger for him.
- 57:51So good for him. He loved to see that.
- 57:53Yeah, like you said, one at the top of the game you love.
- 57:56They need. They need to go though.
- 57:57They need to get it rolling. I mean, if they don't go after
- 58:02this kind of effort, I don't know if they're going at all
- 58:04this year. I don't watch a lot of their
- 58:08games. I'm assuming pitching is still
- 58:11the issue. They've given up 248 runs.
- 58:23It's not great, not great 248. For reference, the Yankees have
- 58:31given up 178 two. 148 / 56 that is a 4.43 average.
- 58:41That is not good. That's tough.
- 58:45That explains it. Rockies have given up 304.
- 58:52Love that Talking about a guy that's going David Frye, a super
- 58:59utility man. Another name I bet you weren't
- 59:03Uber familiar with. Today.
- 59:06Yep, I got nothing to hide here, baby.
- 59:11I watch as much baseball as I can.
- 59:15You watch more baseball than the average person.
- 59:18Like by a by a healthy margin. I'd like to think so.
- 59:23Not enough. There's never enough.
- 59:25You can never watch enough. There's not enough time in the
- 59:27day. There really isn't.
- 59:30Quite literally, there isn't you if even if you wanted to, you
- 59:33couldn't watch 15 games in a day.
- 59:37Yeah, you're not married. If that's the case, ain't going
- 59:45to work. Yeah, you would I'd have some
- 59:50serious heart to heart questions for you if if you were watching
- 59:5430. What is that 45 hours worth of
- 59:57baseball on a given day? Must be fine in the condensed
- 1:00:01versions of those games because like I said, not enough time in
- 1:00:04the day. David Fry, though, in his.
- 1:00:07In 19 games this month, slashing 396-520-9755, he's got six home
- 1:00:17runs. Again, this is in the month of
- 1:00:19May. Six home runs, three stolen
- 1:00:21bases and he has more walks and strikeouts at a 12:00 to 11:00.
- 1:00:26Clip Yeah, the walk rate is absurd, dude.
- 1:00:33This guy can do it all. MLB average walk percentage is
- 1:00:388.4. David Fries this year 17.2.
- 1:00:48His on base percentage is what's most important about that.
- 1:00:52That OBP, by the way. Yeah.
- 1:00:54Or excuse me, the OPS it's 492. He's got a 492 on base
- 1:00:59percentage. What I love, I watched some
- 1:01:04clips dude, he's super simple. Oh yeah.
- 1:01:07If you're a hitting nerd, I like I like the Super simple, just a
- 1:01:13foot up, foot down kind of guy. See the ball he hit in in Coors.
- 1:01:19I mean he's he's a stud. This was all I read that and
- 1:01:25let's I'll hand up here. I'm not going to sit here and
- 1:01:27just watch guardians games all day.
- 1:01:29So I apologize if this is. The guards are hot, Nate.
- 1:01:34The guards are hot. Maybe you should be watching
- 1:01:36more guards games. I read that this is this
- 1:01:40opportunity is mainly surrounded by the Stephen Quan absence, and
- 1:01:45that's where he's gotten a lot of his starting time.
- 1:01:47Well, that's what I'm saying. The guy plays.
- 1:01:49The guy plays everywhere. I mean, let me, let me He.
- 1:01:53Catches too, doesn't he? Yes, he I was going to say he
- 1:01:56catches. I think I saw that he he made he
- 1:02:02made an appearance on the mound. I think it was last year.
- 1:02:05Let me make sure I got that right.
- 1:02:10Yeah, main appearance on the mound last year.
- 1:02:15This year he's caught, he's played left.
- 1:02:18I think he served as the DH. He's played first, he's played
- 1:02:22third. The guy can do it all, and last
- 1:02:33I checked he's got just shy of 100 ABS 98.
- 1:02:36You already mentioned the OBP at 492.
- 1:02:38He's slugging 6/22 and an OPS of 11/15 with an OPS plus by the
- 1:02:43way of 221. He's already he's already built
- 1:02:51up a WAR this season of 1.7. This is crazy.
- 1:03:04I don't get it. Where'd this guy come from?
- 1:03:09Where do they find guys like this?
- 1:03:15It's stuff like this that makes you wonder like, oh man, are the
- 1:03:19guards just going to like, are the guards going to do something
- 1:03:23this year? Where I mentioned it last
- 1:03:25episode, we were talking about their nine game-winning streak
- 1:03:28that I think ended abruptly after 9.
- 1:03:33That the last time that they had a winning streak of that length,
- 1:03:39it happened on I think 3 separate occasions in franchise
- 1:03:42history. In each one of those years they
- 1:03:44they advance to the World Series.
- 1:03:47Yeah. So you take, you take little
- 1:03:49Nuggets like that. You take this David Fry guy.
- 1:03:53Maybe they're due. That comes up out of nowhere
- 1:03:56seemingly, and just takes over for a couple week, really the
- 1:04:01whole month of May thus far. And I don't know, man, those
- 1:04:07sound like ingredients for another World Series run.
- 1:04:10Not to get ahead of myself here. I know, I know we got a lot more
- 1:04:14baseball off to play, but I'm in the I, I said it.
- 1:04:19The guards are hot. I don't think this is a fluke,
- 1:04:23man. I don't think this is a fluke.
- 1:04:27Yeah, across the league is at 28.4% chase percentage.
- 1:04:35He's at 19%. I love it, dude.
- 1:04:41I love it. Is this the next Juan Soto?
- 1:04:45Does my man just have the best eye in baseball?
- 1:04:49Is he going to get a $600 million contract as a walk
- 1:04:54merchant? Why not seventh round pick by
- 1:04:58the Brewers in 2018? I love it, I love that.
- 1:05:07How do you not root for this guy?
- 1:05:11Well, maybe if you don't know about him.
- 1:05:15I'm on board now. Now you're on board.
- 1:05:17Now you're on board. Now we go.
- 1:05:19Now we go. Now we go.
- 1:05:22Now we ride. Now we go to the weekend series
- 1:05:26to watch. I'm going to have my eye this
- 1:05:30weekend on the Padres and Royals.
- 1:05:32They're going to be in Kansas City for three games.
- 1:05:35Game one, you got Dylan Seas going up against Michael Waka.
- 1:05:38That should be a good one. 8:10 PM Eastern, Joe Musgrove versus
- 1:05:43Alec Marshall on Saturday, that's 410 Eastern and Michael
- 1:05:48King versus Cole Reagan's on Sunday for a 210 Eastern match
- 1:05:55up. Maybe some good, some good arms
- 1:05:59going this weekend. That's going to be some that's
- 1:06:01going to be some good baseball. And I say that and I know it's
- 1:06:04they're probably going to be 3 slugfests.
- 1:06:07I'm sure that's usually how that goes.
- 1:06:09But on paper at least, it looks like there should be some some
- 1:06:13decent matchups if you're into respectable pitching.
- 1:06:20I I'm excited to see where Bobby Witt puts a ball.
- 1:06:25It's in Petco, yeah. No Kansas City.
- 1:06:30Never mind. I'm less excited about that.
- 1:06:33That's all right. That's cool.
- 1:06:36Give me, give me Reds, Cubs. Nice little divisional match up.
- 1:06:42We talked about it last time. Reds are starting to get rolling
- 1:06:44a little bit. So game one we got Ashcraft
- 1:06:49going against Assad. Game two is the one.
- 1:06:52Game 2 is what you need to be locking in for.
- 1:06:55It's on Fox on Saturday, 4:15 Pacific.
- 1:07:00That's the time that matters. Hunter Green.
- 1:07:04Hunter green against Justin Steele.
- 1:07:08Yeah, that's the that's the one. And then the Lidolo against
- 1:07:12Brown on Sunday. Let's go Reds.
- 1:07:19Get it rolling. Get it rolling.
- 1:07:26Some good ball this weekend we were talking about before we
- 1:07:28hopped on. There's some even outside of
- 1:07:30those two match ups, there's some some pretty good pairings
- 1:07:34this weekend so. Yeah, if you're a classic
- 1:07:37baseball match up type fan, Yankees in in San Francisco,
- 1:07:43it's always fun. You know, we'll have the classic
- 1:07:48teams playing against each other.
- 1:07:49Love that, love it. You got anything else?
- 1:07:54Yeah, real fast. I don't know what this is, but I
- 1:07:57know it's going to be some time before we talk about it again.
- 1:08:02I think this all has happened within the last like 20-30
- 1:08:05minutes. Jorge Lopez just got DFA D by
- 1:08:09the Mets. Apparently he threw his glove.
- 1:08:13Oh yeah, he got tossed today. I should have included this in
- 1:08:16our rundown. It got tossed today.
- 1:08:20Oh what? And just launched his glove into
- 1:08:25the crowd. I have to think that this is
- 1:08:29unrelated, right? It just it was a.
- 1:08:38What do you mean unrelated? Well, like, was it?
- 1:08:43Did he? You're gonna tell me he got DFH
- 1:08:46solely because of the the glove toss?
- 1:08:49I think so. We've seen some guys do some
- 1:08:53pretty stupid stuff before. Like what?
- 1:08:55My man's jersey is untucked. I told you we're we're.
- 1:08:59Done hat falls off as he's throwing the glove and leaves it
- 1:09:03there. This is a tough look.
- 1:09:11I told you I've said this before.
- 1:09:14The Mets are it's it's not just about like them being bad.
- 1:09:20This is like a. This is deeper than that.
- 1:09:24Hold up. This is like.
- 1:09:28Hold on, there's some some developments in the chat that
- 1:09:32are really, really revealing. Oh, hold on.
- 1:09:41OK, this makes sense. The meds.
- 1:09:48Fox Sports MLB on Twitter The Mets will DFA Jorge Lopez
- 1:09:53tomorrow, per per Martini Want to see Andy Martino after
- 1:09:59throwing his glove into the stands after getting ejected
- 1:10:04today? He said the Mets are the worst
- 1:10:06team in the whole effing MLB in a post game interview.
- 1:10:17Oh my goodness. So I think it's all all a part
- 1:10:22of the equation. Dang dude, what is this true?
- 1:10:36He said if they want me back here tomorrow, I'll be here, but
- 1:10:38I don't care. Did he actually say that?
- 1:10:40There's no way he said that. Oh my, this is the last.
- 1:10:48I mean, I guess if he literally called the Mets the worst team
- 1:10:51in baseball, I wouldn't put it past him, but Oh my goodness,
- 1:10:57that's. What I was going to say, I
- 1:10:59remember him being a reliever in Baltimore.
- 1:11:02You know, honestly though, good on him dude.
- 1:11:04Like, you know, somebody's going to pick him up, but what a way
- 1:11:07to just get out of. Town no shot.
- 1:11:11Absolutely. Somebody's going to pick him up.
- 1:11:13Are you kidding me, dude? No shot.
- 1:11:16He wanted to get out of No, he wanted to get out of Queen.
- 1:11:19We have. We have guys in this league that
- 1:11:22have abused women. Like he tossed his glove in the
- 1:11:25crowd. Let spare me that.
- 1:11:27Nobody's going to be there. Isn't going to be.
- 1:11:30He's not going to pick them up. That combined with the comments,
- 1:11:33no, he's done. Come on.
- 1:11:37Wasn't even that bad. 312 ERA, 26 innings.
- 1:11:48Unbelievable. 122 ERA plus he's done.
- 1:11:56There's no way. Nah, somebody's going to pick
- 1:12:00him up. Not this year.
- 1:12:05Apparently when they asked him to clarify, he double downed.
- 1:12:08Yes, you give me that. Wow, I cannot like.
- 1:12:19I know I literally just got done saying that like there are guys
- 1:12:21in this league that have abused women.
- 1:12:22They still get picked up by teams.
- 1:12:24But like I and I'm not saying that this is worse, but I just
- 1:12:27can't fathom in a post game presser saying like you are
- 1:12:31still employed by the team saying that, yeah, I play for
- 1:12:36the worst team of baseball. Not in like a, not in like a, a
- 1:12:42frustrated way. It, it, I mean, I need to watch
- 1:12:46it cause a video like it's just now circulated.
- 1:12:48So I haven't had a chance to watch it yet.
- 1:12:50But based on the things that I'm seeing that he said, it just
- 1:12:54sounds vindictive where it's like this wasn't just like an
- 1:12:58owl man. I, I put my foot in my mouth
- 1:13:01like tomorrow he's not going to come up.
- 1:13:02Like I I messed up like now this guy.
- 1:13:05Yeah, he's done a little. Bit of pent up.
- 1:13:09He's out, dude, I tell. That's what I'm saying, dude.
- 1:13:11There's something wrong. The organization is like,
- 1:13:15everyone is like a toddler. Everyone is acting like a
- 1:13:20toddler. Calls don't go their way.
- 1:13:25Like, I understand like frustration, but yeah.
- 1:13:29Quote is confirmed, he said. I'll be ready to be here
- 1:13:32tomorrow if they want me to be here.
- 1:13:36Oh man, wow, I'm glad you caught that.
- 1:13:40I, I just saw him toss the glove in the crowd and I was like, OK,
- 1:13:43like we've seen guys toss batting gloves, whatever, but
- 1:13:46Yikes, I did not see all this. It's a tough look, Oh, that's
- 1:13:52for sure. I don't think he's back this
- 1:13:55year. I don't think anyone's picking
- 1:13:56him up. Somebody posted on Reddit a
- 1:13:58picture of the glove. He's like my buddy caught Jorge
- 1:14:00Lopez's glove. What a what a circus this is.
- 1:14:07Different, That's a different move right there, because
- 1:14:10pitchers, it's not like pitchers have multiple gloves.
- 1:14:13Like they're not. Most guys don't like break in
- 1:14:16multiple gloves at a time the way position players do.
- 1:14:18My man's going to have to get a new glove.
- 1:14:24That's a tough look, dude. Just like competitor wise, I
- 1:14:27would, I mean, if if I had a high school kid do that on my
- 1:14:31team, you, you can, you can bet he's gone.
- 1:14:38But all of them, all of them have acted that way this year.
